1:44
Speaker 5: I have.
1:47
Speaker 4: I'm all over the board today, man, Like there's just
1:50
Speaker 4: there's like so many different kinds of things that are
1:55
Speaker 4: happening right now. And I want to want to jump
2:00
Speaker 4: in right with with with Marshall, you know, and and
2:04
Speaker 4: Coach Huff Now early in the season, and I'm curious
2:10
Speaker 4: about how you guys will will relate to this and
2:13
Speaker 4: and and where you take it. Early on in the season,
2:18
Speaker 4: I think everybody, not I won't say everybody, but there
2:22
Speaker 4: were a lot of people saying him and Neil Brown
2:25
Speaker 4: looked like they weren't gonna make it right.
2:27
Speaker 2: And all of a sudden things change.
2:31
Speaker 4: Yeah, Now, all of a sudden, we're hearing that you know,
2:35
Speaker 4: there's a possibility that you know, he may be he
2:38
Speaker 4: may go somewhere else. And there's some conversation Coach Hoff
2:44
Speaker 4: and and we're talking and and there's some conversation I
2:48
Speaker 4: was reading some of it, like from different folks or
2:50
Speaker 4: saying like, you know, now all of a sudden, we
2:53
Speaker 4: don't want him to leave, or if he leaves, that's
2:57
Speaker 4: that's not really wrong.
3:00
Speaker 6: How is to me?
3:02
Speaker 4: I think he has a right to make this choice
3:05
Speaker 4: however he wants to, if he if he wants to
3:07
Speaker 4: step out, go somewhere else. Even more so because of
3:14
Speaker 4: and I don't mean and I don't want to say
3:15
Speaker 4: really because but he has seen how how fickle fans
3:20
Speaker 4: can be. And at the end of the day, I'm
3:23
Speaker 4: I put this whole kind of thought process of firing
3:26
Speaker 4: coaches on fan base. I put it on the fan
3:29
Speaker 4: fans that you can't do that I can necessarily know
3:33
Speaker 4: if you're not winning. I'm listening to you, both of y'all.
3:37
Speaker 4: I'm listening to both of y'all gonna sit here and
3:38
Speaker 4: say nothing.
3:40
Speaker 6: Go ahead, Lisa, No, No, it's not on the fan base.
3:44
Speaker 6: I mean, I really feel like, you know, he's winning.
3:48
Speaker 6: He's doing things in Huntington and other schools are like, hey,
3:52
Speaker 6: they're giving him the decida and you know, he's got
3:55
Speaker 6: to listen to people I agree, And I really don't
4:01
Speaker 6: feel like though this is on the fan base at all.
4:05
Speaker 6: I mean, I feel like this is something that I
4:08
Speaker 6: think Huntington wants to keep him. I really do.
4:10
Speaker 4: I think that too. I think that too. But but
4:13
Speaker 4: early on there was the conversation about he might need
4:17
Speaker 4: to go. Well, I think fan bases are gonna, you know,
4:20
Speaker 4: obviously just be fanatic. They're gonna be fans, right, so
4:23
Speaker 4: they're gonna want to see you win. And I think
4:25
Speaker 4: the thing that coach Huff does good is he's going
4:28
Speaker 4: to schedule those tough games he scheduled at Ohio State.
4:30
Speaker 4: He's going to schedule that Virginia Tech. He's going to
4:32
Speaker 4: schedule that Notre Dame. So he's gonna see exactly where
4:35
Speaker 4: his talent is versus those Power five talents. Do you
4:38
Speaker 4: think do you think those games have a lot to
4:42
Speaker 4: do with where the season has taken a turn? Yeah?
4:46
Speaker 4: I think so, because I mean, when you when you're
4:49
Speaker 4: measured against the best, when you're competing against the best,
4:52
Speaker 4: that again, it's gonna let you know exactly where you stand,
4:56
Speaker 4: exactly what you need to do good at, exactly what
4:58
Speaker 4: your strengths are. So that way, when you come back
5:00
Speaker 4: down to your conference play, I think you're going to
5:02
Speaker 4: be more prepared. And I think he does it good.
5:04
Speaker 4: I like that he does that. I like that he
5:06
Speaker 4: plays the very best. And I think that what we're
5:08
Speaker 4: going to have to get used to, at least in
5:11
Speaker 4: regards to our major university's Marshall and WVU, is exactly
5:15
Speaker 4: how do we measure success? You know, because like I like,
5:19
Speaker 4: I'm told I've spoke about this on the streets a
5:22
Speaker 4: thousand times. Right when you're a WVU, it's going to
5:26
Speaker 4: be very hard for you playing in the Big twelve
5:29
Speaker 4: to compete for recruits in Texas. It's going to be
5:31
Speaker 4: very hard. When you're a Marshall and you're playing in
5:34
Speaker 4: the Sunbelt, it's going to be very hard for you
5:35
Speaker 4: to recruit for recruits in Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, in Louisiana.
5:40
Speaker 4: So your recruiting base is thrown off because you're not
5:42
Speaker 4: playing in the back in the Big East no more. Right, So,
5:45
Speaker 4: I think how you measure success is going to be
5:48
Speaker 4: a little bit different. And I think specifically with coach Huff,
5:51
Speaker 4: I mean he's pitted you know, fifteen I think fifteen
5:54
Speaker 4: sixteen players in the NFL since his since he's been
5:57
Speaker 4: at Marshall. So I think how we measure says whether
6:00
Speaker 4: that's are you getting guys to the next level, are
6:02
Speaker 4: you winning? Are you going to bowl games? Are you
6:04
Speaker 4: graduating guys? That's going to be the measure in addition
6:08
Speaker 4: to your WNL record, at least that before you jump in.
6:12
Speaker 4: I just I'm going to make this case again. I've
6:15
Speaker 4: said this a thousand times. I sit in I was
6:19
Speaker 4: part of the selection committee who was for coach Huff and.
6:24
Speaker 2: I'm telling you sitting and listening to him.
6:27
Speaker 4: Talk about his strategy, how he was going to do
6:30
Speaker 4: things like it was systematical and it was like something
6:34
Speaker 4: I had never heard in my life. He's a nick
6:36
Speaker 4: saving guy. Yeah, and so so Lisa, I'm I've got
6:40
Speaker 4: a chance to hear this man talk about a plan,
6:43
Speaker 4: having a step one to step whatever to get to
6:47
Speaker 4: where he's where he wants to go.
6:50
Speaker 6: Okay, I'm going to agree with everything he said, but
6:53
Speaker 6: I'm also going to say that Southern miss wants him. Okay,
7:00
Speaker 6: you know he's listening to them. Of course they have
7:03
Speaker 6: deeper in il, they have more connections with the portal.
7:07
Speaker 6: I mean, I love Huntington. I love Marshall. I went
7:12
Speaker 6: to school there. You know, it's it's it's my home.
7:17
Speaker 6: But when you look at what they could offer him
7:21
Speaker 6: compared to what hunting To can offer him besides Tutor's biscuits,
7:30
Speaker 6: he's got to listen to them. And I think now
7:34
Speaker 6: it used to be that we had our fate in
7:37
Speaker 6: our own hands, like we were like, okay, whether or
7:39
Speaker 6: not we want to keep him. But now that he's winning,
7:42
Speaker 6: and now that he's attracting attention from these other schools,
7:46
Speaker 6: it's not it's out of our hands. I really feel
7:49
Speaker 6: like that. I really feel like he's kind of he
7:53
Speaker 6: has a possibility to move on to a school that
7:56
Speaker 6: has more resources than he had.
8:00
Speaker 4: The Honey, And I think to add on to that
8:03
Speaker 4: location too, Like I said, you're competing in the sun
8:06
Speaker 4: Belt and you're if you know, Southern Misses the school,
8:11
Speaker 4: you're right in the heart of the Southern the sun
8:13
Speaker 4: Belt conference, right, So your recruiting base. Not that it's
8:17
Speaker 4: going to be necessarily easy to recruit, particularly with you know,
8:19
Speaker 4: in I L and transfer portal, but at least you're
8:22
Speaker 4: you know you're not you know, you don't have to
8:24
Speaker 4: sell your location I'll say that well, and and to
8:27
Speaker 4: to that and add to that, there's no way I
8:32
Speaker 4: think a coach moves to another school without talking about
8:35
Speaker 4: the potential of n I L.
8:38
Speaker 2: I mean that's the reality. Where is where?
8:40
Speaker 4: Where are the funds that will help me make that change?
8:44
Speaker 4: Because now we can't be crazy and assume that somebody's
8:49
Speaker 4: not going to follow him.
8:51
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, one hundred percent. I mean in I L.
8:53
Speaker 4: Is part of the deal. Now, It's just it is
8:55
Speaker 4: what it is. You're not You're not taking a job
8:58
Speaker 4: without figuring out who was the pockets, where's the money
9:01
Speaker 4: coming from, how much he got and different things of
9:04
Speaker 4: that nature. That that is what it is. Were you
9:07
Speaker 4: trying to say something, Lisa?
9:10
Speaker 6: I mean that that's why Huntington has issues with keeping
9:14
Speaker 6: a coach, you know. I mean, let's just look at reality.
9:18
Speaker 6: I mean, he could go there and have way more
9:20
Speaker 6: resources and probably do as well. It's not better than
9:25
Speaker 6: he does Huntington. I mean, let's just reality.
9:30
Speaker 4: Let me ask this to both of you. It seems
9:33
Speaker 4: it seems like almost every year there's something around coach tough.
9:38
Speaker 4: You know, something is here, Is here a bigger coach
9:45
Speaker 4: than maybe what we give him? Credit for that he
9:49
Speaker 4: that he because there's a lot of there's been a
9:51
Speaker 4: lot of conversation about different things around him that he
9:57
Speaker 4: could he could go to he can get Is he
10:01
Speaker 4: bigger than what we what we are appreciating him for.
10:06
Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm gonna yeah, I.
10:09
Speaker 4: Would say yes. And I think we have to understand again,
10:11
Speaker 4: he comes from I mean, he came from Alabama. He
10:13
Speaker 4: came right Nick Saban's coaching tree, right, so he has
10:16
Speaker 4: that sort of pedigree. And I would also say, I mean,
10:18
Speaker 4: you know, obviously Marshall isn't Alabama or Notre Dame. But
10:21
Speaker 4: I think if you look at Marshall's facilities, you look
10:24
Speaker 4: at what we have, what we have to offer, it's
10:27
Speaker 4: a pretty good job. And I think even regionally far
10:30
Speaker 4: as you know, being in the Tri state area where
10:32
Speaker 4: you can recruit West Virginia, Huntington, Kentucky, Virginia, So I
10:36
Speaker 4: think you do have a good base here. It is
10:38
Speaker 4: a It is a great job. Hopefully, like I said,
10:41
Speaker 4: I would like to see him stay. Hopefully it's not
10:43
Speaker 4: a stepping stone job for him. But I mean I
10:45
Speaker 4: wouldn't be mad if it was.
10:47
Speaker 2: Yeah, go ahead, Lisa.
10:50
Speaker 6: No, I wouldn't beat mad either. I agree. I agree
10:52
Speaker 6: with Hollins. I mean, you know, he's got to do
10:55
Speaker 6: what's best for him.
10:56
Speaker 4: Yeah.
10:56
Speaker 6: Absolutely, you know we I think our fan base lost
11:01
Speaker 6: faith at the beginning of the season and last season,
11:06
Speaker 6: but look what he's done for the program. I mean,
11:09
Speaker 6: those kids love him. Those kids love him. I think
11:12
Speaker 6: he's a great recruiter. You know, I'm with Carl. I
11:17
Speaker 6: think some kids will follow him if he gets there.
11:19
Speaker 4: And he's pitting guys in the NFL too, Yes, you
11:22
Speaker 4: know he's pitting guys in the league.
11:24
Speaker 2: Yes, that post today on Facebook.
11:27
Speaker 4: I mean, you're looking at that and you could compare
11:30
Speaker 4: that to just about anybody. That's what I'm saying to me,
11:33
Speaker 4: and that's what I was trying to allude to earlier.
11:36
Speaker 4: I think when you look at success, we could talk
11:38
Speaker 4: about wins and losses, and that's cool. When we all
11:40
Speaker 4: want to win the conference and you know, bring back
11:43
Speaker 4: the Chad Pennington Randy Moss days. For sure, we want that, right.
11:46
Speaker 4: But I think if I'm a parent, if I you know,
11:50
Speaker 4: if I'm a player, and I and that's my goal
11:52
Speaker 4: and that's what I aspire to do, is go to
11:54
Speaker 4: the NFL, and I'm looking at what he's done over
11:56
Speaker 4: the past three seasons, pitting fifteen sixteen guys in the league.
11:59
Speaker 4: That might be a selling point for me be a freshman.
12:03
Speaker 4: And and you're being recruited there and you you hear that,
12:07
Speaker 4: what do you think That's what I'm saying. I mean
12:10
Speaker 4: that that would have it would have mattered where he
12:14
Speaker 4: was at. He tells me he's got ten players in
12:16
Speaker 4: the NFL. Where's the paper at I'm signing on? You
12:20
Speaker 4: know what I'm saying, because if that's your dream, and
12:23
Speaker 4: that's a whole lot of kids dreams. He but he's
12:27
Speaker 4: the guy to go through.
12:29
Speaker 6: Yeah, and he's taking Marshall to a Bowl every year
12:31
Speaker 6: since he's been there. I mean, we can't we can't
12:35
Speaker 6: argue that back. And he's successful. And I don't know
12:39
Speaker 6: what Marshall's thinking. I know I've heard rumors that Huntington
12:44
Speaker 6: was done, that they already have somebody in the background
12:48
Speaker 6: and the shadows that they want there that is getting
12:52
Speaker 6: a staff together. And you probably have heard that too.
12:55
Speaker 4: I have heard that.
12:57
Speaker 6: Okay, so you know, now that he's winning, we're all like, oh,
13:01
Speaker 6: wait a minute, maybe maybe you know what we're thinking
13:05
Speaker 6: too quickly and getting rid of him, and but you
13:09
Speaker 6: know what I mean, I just feel like you can't
13:13
Speaker 6: blame it on the fan fan base really, because.
13:17
Speaker 4: I'm not I'm not blaming I'm not blaming the fan base.
13:23
Speaker 4: But I think not just Marshall's fan base, I think
13:27
Speaker 4: the in general fans have the ability to jump ship
13:33
Speaker 4: in a.
13:34
Speaker 2: Couple of losses, look anywhere, you know. I mean, yeah, that's.
13:38
Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying. As to me, I'm thinking as
13:41
Speaker 4: a fan, I'm I don't like, I'm not upset Vikings
13:46
Speaker 4: lose the game. I'm not upset. You know, they don't.
13:49
Speaker 4: They don't necessarily bother me to it. But you're not
13:52
Speaker 4: a fanatic neither. No, I'm gonna put yourself in their place.
13:55
Speaker 4: But when you're not associated as a player, you're a
13:57
Speaker 4: fanatic about you know, but the team. But you but
14:01
Speaker 4: but you have but you have to think, you have
14:03
Speaker 4: to put yourself in a place of like what is
14:07
Speaker 4: normal in winning football games, basketball games, baseball games. It's
14:11
Speaker 4: not like you can just go out there and you
14:13
Speaker 4: just assume a team is five hundred and you only
14:17
Speaker 4: lost one game or no games. You can't automatically assume
14:19
Speaker 4: you can win that game. We see that all the time.
14:22
Speaker 4: Fans do that though, that's what fans do. But if
14:26
Speaker 4: there are any fans that are listening in on this show,
14:30
Speaker 4: I'm trying to make the case. I'm trying to make
14:32
Speaker 4: the case to just enjoy your team. It's gonna be
14:36
Speaker 4: ups and downs to just and and it ain't it
14:38
Speaker 4: ain't always the coaches. That's why they fans. We need
14:41
Speaker 4: you to be crazy. We need you to be emotional,
14:44
Speaker 4: we need you to be passionate about this. We need
14:46
Speaker 4: you to.
14:48
Speaker 6: Merge.
14:49
Speaker 4: We need fans like that. We can't have melancholy, just
14:52
Speaker 4: middle to row fans. No, I want them to I
14:54
Speaker 4: want them to be I want them to be happy.
14:56
Speaker 4: I want them to be mad. But you can't. You
14:58
Speaker 4: don't have the place to put the blame on somebody. Yeah,
15:02
Speaker 4: I think there's a perspective. I mean I would agree
15:04
Speaker 4: with you. There there's a perspective. And like I said,
15:07
Speaker 4: when you look at coach Huff, I mean he took
15:08
Speaker 4: those big games. Obviously those are not only you know,
15:12
Speaker 4: you're measuring yourself against pretty good schools, but you're also
15:15
Speaker 4: it's a check involved in that. So you're bringing resources
15:17
Speaker 4: back to the program. And it's gonna be a rough start,
15:19
Speaker 4: you know, because you're gonna have guys beat up. So
15:21
Speaker 4: that started the season is gonna be rough when you
15:23
Speaker 4: start that way. But I think what he's proven is
15:26
Speaker 4: that as the season's gone on that he's able to
15:29
Speaker 4: win and he's actually got into the rhythm. And in addition,
15:32
Speaker 4: like I said, to me, the biggest point of coach Huff,
15:34
Speaker 4: he putting guys in that league and you can't argue.
15:38
Speaker 4: And I'm to your valid, valid, valid point. If I
15:43
Speaker 4: see that, and I say, I'm a Marshall fan, that
15:46
Speaker 4: to me is having an impact on the players in
15:50
Speaker 4: which you touch, and that is that is greater than
15:55
Speaker 4: a win a bowl game to me at the end
16:00
Speaker 4: of the day, if you're touching each one of them.
16:03
Speaker 6: But this is you're you're talking about the educated fan. Yeah,
16:10
Speaker 6: the fan is in the sands to he'll win. They
16:13
Speaker 6: want to see their team wins. They're not looking at
16:15
Speaker 6: who the guy got in the NFL. They're not looking at,
16:18
Speaker 6: you know, the connection he has with the players. The
16:21
Speaker 6: run of the mill fan, not the educated fan, is
16:25
Speaker 6: out there to see the Herd have a victory. And
16:30
Speaker 6: that's the difference. That's the difference I think, and I
16:34
Speaker 6: don't know what's going to happen. I wish him well.
16:37
Speaker 6: I think he I think he's been an awesome asset
16:40
Speaker 6: to Marshall Athletics. I hope he's face. But you know what,
16:45
Speaker 6: I can't blame the guy if he gets.
16:47
Speaker 4: Do you let me ask you this, do you think
16:49
Speaker 4: he goes? Do you think if if he's offered the
16:51
Speaker 4: position at Southern Miss, do you think he takes it
16:53
Speaker 4: and goes? Just speculation?
16:57
Speaker 6: Okay, okay, because.
16:58
Speaker 2: It's a it's a rebuild a game.
17:01
Speaker 6: Okay, yeah, I really feel like speculation with it's an upgrade.
17:09
Speaker 6: It really is. I mean, I don't want to say
17:11
Speaker 6: that it's not, you know, I don't. I don't want
17:14
Speaker 6: to put Marshall down, but I feel like it's upgrade
17:17
Speaker 6: for him. And I feel like he's got more resources
17:20
Speaker 6: at that level. And that's that's where I think he
17:24
Speaker 6: might jump ship.
17:25
Speaker 4: Huh. But now their record if I if I if
17:29
Speaker 4: I look that up right, they don't have a winning record,
17:32
Speaker 4: So it's it's still a rebuild. And and but again, okay,
17:39
Speaker 4: I buy into the resources. But my question to you
17:45
Speaker 4: would be, do I want to go through this process. Again,
17:49
Speaker 4: I want that's not and that's my point. I mean,
17:51
Speaker 4: because like I said, again, you you kind of got
17:53
Speaker 4: things rolling at Marshall, and I can see a situation
17:56
Speaker 4: in Marshall in the next couple of seasons they can
17:59
Speaker 4: have that you know, nine and three, they can be
18:01
Speaker 4: at ten and two. You know, they could really be
18:04
Speaker 4: propelled themselves, maybe in the top twenty five, top fifteen.
18:07
Speaker 4: And now you go to a situation again to your point, Lisa,
18:10
Speaker 4: you got more resources down there, You're in a better locale,
18:14
Speaker 4: but got to start all over, gotta start off, you know,
18:17
Speaker 4: I mean, is that worth it?
18:19
Speaker 6: I will say this, Marshall's gonna pony up. They got
18:23
Speaker 6: to take care of him. They've got to reassure him that, Okay,
18:27
Speaker 6: we've got your back, we want you here, we want
18:29
Speaker 6: you the long term. We're going to do things to
18:33
Speaker 6: keep you here. I mean, there's so many scenarios in
18:37
Speaker 6: the in this whole debaccle in my opinion, but I
18:42
Speaker 6: wouldn't be surprised if be jump shipped. Honestly, that's just yeah.
18:46
Speaker 4: I mean again, I can't necessarily argue that, but I
18:51
Speaker 4: think there is I don't think it's clear cut. I
18:54
Speaker 4: think there's things to consider if you're you know what
18:56
Speaker 4: I'm saying on both sides, I say and huff because
19:00
Speaker 4: I started to start over. It's tough man.
19:02
Speaker 2: Yeah.
19:03
Speaker 4: And and even with the resources, you still you still start. No,
19:08
Speaker 4: you still start because you're still competing in n I
19:10
Speaker 4: l transferport, You're still competing.
19:11
Speaker 2: Yeah.
19:12
Speaker 6: You know, maybe he wants to challenge. Maybe that's how
19:15
Speaker 6: he's built.
19:17
Speaker 4: I can make that case. I could see that. I
19:19
Speaker 4: could see that in him too, that like, hey, I
19:22
Speaker 4: did it here and I can go somewhere else. And
19:25
Speaker 4: if I'm going to have maybe more resources, why don't
19:28
Speaker 4: I go there?
19:29
Speaker 2: Because it make it be quicker, a quicker process there than.
19:32
Speaker 4: It was here.
19:34
Speaker 6: Exactly.
19:35
Speaker 4: I don't know. Well, I'll say this, and I'm curious
19:38
Speaker 4: with what you both say and how you respond to it.
19:42
Speaker 4: For Marshall, I hope he stays. I think, Yeah. I
19:48
Speaker 4: think for the players who have had a chance to
19:52
Speaker 4: play for him and understand who he is and how
19:56
Speaker 4: he operates, I think a challenge of an new coach
20:01
Speaker 4: I think would be extremely difficult. And I don't know
20:05
Speaker 4: how I don't leave and follow him. Yeah, And I
20:09
Speaker 4: think I like he you know, he has a lot
20:10
Speaker 4: of local kids. I think if you look at the
20:12
Speaker 4: pain Brothers, the running back to the tight End, you
20:15
Speaker 4: look at the kids he's got from Cabo Mill ind
20:17
Speaker 4: the Spring Valley. I would really love to see, you know,
20:21
Speaker 4: you know, our local in state guys really, you know,
20:26
Speaker 4: consider Marshall, you know, our elite talent here because I think,
20:30
Speaker 4: you know, we can really build and I like kind
20:32
Speaker 4: of I just like what he's done with you know,
20:33
Speaker 4: some of our in state talent. So I would hope
20:36
Speaker 4: he stays. But again, I would understand if he left
20:39
Speaker 4: going Green Pass, particularly if the check is bigger. Now,
20:41
Speaker 4: if that check bigger, you know, like to point, people
20:45
Speaker 4: got a pony up, so and that's gonna be that
20:47
Speaker 4: might be tough challenge for Marshall at this juncture.
20:53
Speaker 6: I'm with you. I'm with you, guys. I mean, I
20:55
Speaker 6: think he's the best thing that's happened. I really hated
20:58
Speaker 6: the way Doc left, you know that that upset me.
21:02
Speaker 6: But then when he came in and did what he did,
21:05
Speaker 6: I felt like it was a good move in the
21:07
Speaker 6: in the long run. But I'm like you, guys, I
21:11
Speaker 6: really feel like that Huntington's gotta they've they've got to
21:15
Speaker 6: show him that they that you're our guy. You're our
21:19
Speaker 6: guy and in it for the long haul, and we
21:21
Speaker 6: want to keep you here. So we'll see how it
21:24
Speaker 6: pans out. I don't know, but I mean that that's
21:28
Speaker 6: a lot to ask in this day and age with
21:31
Speaker 6: n I L and transfer portal, We've all talked about
21:34
Speaker 6: that many many a time. Not to beat the dead horse,
21:36
Speaker 6: but you know, you go where your opportunities and your
21:42
Speaker 6: resources are.
21:43
Speaker 2: We'll see best coach since Bob Preuitt.
21:47
Speaker 4: Uh. I just asked the question, second, is he's the
21:58
Speaker 4: second best coach? It could be the third. You may
22:01
Speaker 4: say it's the third. I mean I think that's still
22:03
Speaker 4: it's still early kind of to say that. I mean
22:05
Speaker 4: he's three seasons in, right, that is that. Yeah, I
22:07
Speaker 4: think it's three seasons in. So, like I said, I
22:09
Speaker 4: think that's early because I mean it's harder like because
22:12
Speaker 4: I think Doc has some pretty pretty good years. Yeah,
22:15
Speaker 4: but like I said, I mean three years and you're
22:17
Speaker 4: putting that many guys in the league. To me, that
22:19
Speaker 4: just that stands out to me. That's what gets me.
22:22
Speaker 4: That's what gets me. That's what makes it I think
22:25
Speaker 4: so relevant to what he's actually doing and what these
22:29
Speaker 4: kids like, whether he can bring that that caliber of
22:33
Speaker 4: a player in, or he can bring a player in
22:36
Speaker 4: and develop them to that level, whatever whichever one of
22:39
Speaker 4: those it is, and he's still producers. And that's why
22:41
Speaker 4: I like Marshall highlighted that. I'm actually like, I like
22:44
Speaker 4: that they put that out there because that's relevant. It's relevant,
22:47
Speaker 4: and it's like I said, if you're a kid, if
22:49
Speaker 4: you're talent, and you're really, like I said, to your point, Lisia,
22:52
Speaker 4: not Lisa, to your point, if you're not only an
22:56
Speaker 4: educated fan, but you're also an educated parent and player,
22:59
Speaker 4: then you're gonna realize that, right.
23:01
Speaker 6: So yeah, yeah, I mean, I mean, I really feel
23:05
Speaker 6: like he could bring the players in, the quality players.
23:08
Speaker 6: It's that, like like you just said, the ones that
23:11
Speaker 6: understand what he can bring to the table. But I
23:19
Speaker 6: just don't know. I don't know how this is going
23:20
Speaker 6: to play out. I see, I really like him, but
23:26
Speaker 6: things to me look a little grim. I mean, I
23:28
Speaker 6: really I don't know if and keep him. I really don't.
23:32
Speaker 4: I don't think. I don't think. I don't think he'll stay.
23:36
Speaker 4: I don't that that's my fine after this season? You
23:38
Speaker 4: think he's Yeah, I think if there's any particular opportunity
23:42
Speaker 4: that he can get this season, I think I think
23:45
Speaker 4: he goes because I think he may have. I think
23:49
Speaker 4: in this season I think it may have maybe he
23:51
Speaker 4: was kind of shocked of all the kind of outside
23:54
Speaker 4: noise or is it just like you know, you just
23:58
Speaker 4: he might have played it off. He might, But you just.
24:00
Speaker 2: Want to go bigger. I mean that bigger goals.
24:02
Speaker 4: Because yeah, because look, I've done this. I came here
24:05
Speaker 4: and I've done this here. Yeah, right, I can. So
24:09
Speaker 4: I'm not afraid of that team that's got to losing record.
24:12
Speaker 4: We can rebuild there. I rebuild that. I come right
24:16
Speaker 4: after Marshall and I go right there and rebuild that.
24:19
Speaker 4: Then you might be Alabama talking about big. Now you're
24:22
Speaker 4: talking about a big house to go to. Yeah.
24:26
Speaker 6: How old is Top? How old is he? How old? Top?
24:30
Speaker 4: Forties? Really forties?
24:31
Speaker 2: I was going to think early forties when I was
24:33
Speaker 2: a young. Yeah, he's not older, girl.
24:36
Speaker 6: He's got plenty of time to climb that ladder. So,
24:38
Speaker 6: I mean, you know, it's not like he's you know,
24:41
Speaker 6: in his fifties or you know, looking to retire somewhere.
24:45
Speaker 5: Right.
24:46
Speaker 6: Yeah, he's still on that track.
24:48
Speaker 4: But I but I say, man, the money they're giving
24:51
Speaker 4: these coaches, and not only just the money that you're
24:54
Speaker 4: getting for you know, if you're winning losing, but if
24:56
Speaker 4: you get to a point where you have some big wins,
24:59
Speaker 4: you go to this big Who I mean about money? Yeah,
25:01
Speaker 4: I mean you look at what happened, like Jimbo Fisher
25:03
Speaker 4: right where you're you know, you did good, you want
25:06
Speaker 4: national champions The things kind of fell off the rail.
25:08
Speaker 4: I mean it's buyout was like fifty sixty million. You
25:11
Speaker 4: know what I'm saying. So if I was a coach,
25:13
Speaker 4: I might be playing for the for the buyer. Let
25:15
Speaker 4: me go ahead and get let me go ahead and win,
25:16
Speaker 4: let me go ahead, get some depthies under my belt
25:18
Speaker 4: in the National Championship. Then I'm just sit back. Y'all
25:21
Speaker 4: gotta buy me out here, y'all gotta fire me, and
25:24
Speaker 4: I need that sixty seventy million dollars bout.
25:26
Speaker 6: I was just like college, just like, show me the money.
25:29
Speaker 4: I'm just saying it's there and you kind of have to.
25:33
Speaker 4: I'm thinking that you rushing back. You've seen rushing back. Yeah,
25:37
Speaker 4: I think at that kind of level when you're in
25:39
Speaker 4: that level. It is about the money because you're coaching.
25:44
Speaker 4: Your coaching is not in question. It's about how much
25:47
Speaker 4: will you pay me to come and coach your team? Yeah? Man, So,
25:51
Speaker 4: like I said, this money all the way around that thing,
25:54
Speaker 4: from your salary to your buyout, to your to your
25:56
Speaker 4: nil deals, to your endorsements and everything like that. Right, So, man,
26:00
Speaker 4: So I ain't mad at him, man at all. Yeah,
26:05
Speaker 4: all right, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna switch it.
26:07
Speaker 4: I know we're probably gonna end up going to a
26:10
Speaker 4: break before we kind of jump into it. But high
26:14
Speaker 4: school football, Yes, high school for me. Okay, we know,
26:22
Speaker 4: we know, we know. It's it's it's win or go home. Yeah, okay,
26:28
Speaker 4: So okay, so I just got this the signal. Man,
26:32
Speaker 4: we're getting ready to take a break. I'll be right back.
26:35
Speaker 4: All right, all right, we'll be right back.

27:35
Speaker 3: Now back to the conversation.
27:37
Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen. Uh, this is Carl Lee
27:41
Speaker 4: and I got Hollis Lewis, and I think we may
27:44
Speaker 4: still have Lise Odi on the phone.
27:47
Speaker 5: I'm still here, Okay, all right, okay, high school football, man,
27:59
Speaker 5: it is a little little bit of everywhere.
28:01
Speaker 4: Well let me say this too, that the playoffs have started.
28:04
Speaker 4: So it started I think last week after we had
28:06
Speaker 4: a conversation about the Supreme Court rulers. So it's back
28:10
Speaker 4: on last week. And what I found out too, is
28:12
Speaker 4: that every two years. So actually the four A class
28:16
Speaker 4: that only currently has sixteen teams that actually won't be
28:20
Speaker 4: changed next year. So they'll they'll I think the rules
28:23
Speaker 4: as it stated is they'll change every two years, so
28:26
Speaker 4: we'll look for a change in twenty twenty six possibly
28:29
Speaker 4: to you know, expand that thing out. All right, well,
28:32
Speaker 4: let me ask this question. Okay, so let's say if
28:36
Speaker 4: I'm Triple A and I win Triple A championship two
28:39
Speaker 4: years in a row, is that is that the kind
28:42
Speaker 4: of change they're looking at. No, that doesn't really I
28:45
Speaker 4: don't think that's gonna matter. But I think I think
28:47
Speaker 4: how they're going to do it is simplify. They're just
28:49
Speaker 4: going to do it by enrollment, I would imagine. Again,
28:51
Speaker 4: that's just my educated guess that when they go to
28:54
Speaker 4: change it again, which I think they have to expand
28:56
Speaker 4: that four A class at least at least to get
28:58
Speaker 4: twenty twenty five teams in there, it's gonna be strictly
29:00
Speaker 4: based on a roll, but they're not gonna fool with
29:02
Speaker 4: no complex formula that's vague and maybe even overly broad
29:08
Speaker 4: I would hope, so yeah, I would hope. So yeah.
29:10
Speaker 2: It's just my speculation, but I don't know.
29:14
Speaker 4: Yeah, we've had or I shouldn't say we've had, but
29:18
Speaker 4: high school football has had a has had an interesting
29:21
Speaker 4: like weekend of can we call it drama? Yeah?
29:27
Speaker 2: Always something Yeah, And.
29:33
Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna speak specifically for myself. When it
29:36
Speaker 4: comes to dealing with referees, there is zero chances of
29:44
Speaker 4: you ever having any impact on an official. Zero. You
29:49
Speaker 4: can yell, you can cuss, you can threaten, you can
29:53
Speaker 4: do all of that, but there's zero impact that you're
29:58
Speaker 4: gonna have on a game. They're gonna call the.
30:02
Speaker 6: Game, right, I mean, if anything, they're gonna rule it,
30:07
Speaker 6: they're gonna hold it against you.
30:08
Speaker 4: Right, Well, did you did you all see the Yukon game,
30:12
Speaker 4: the basketball game. I saw a clip and look, I'm
30:17
Speaker 4: telling you like it was. It was out of control.
30:22
Speaker 4: I mean, the coach was going crazy, they were making
30:26
Speaker 4: they were calling out and again I'm not a basketball player,
30:31
Speaker 4: but if if the official makes that call. This was
30:36
Speaker 4: like a weekend of like the reality of officiating and
30:41
Speaker 4: what can you what? Because I guess my question is
30:43
Speaker 4: is you can't do anything about it? Why are we
30:47
Speaker 4: why the only thing we're doing, The only thing we're
30:50
Speaker 4: doing is getting some kind of a technical, a technical
30:55
Speaker 4: that ends up causing.
30:56
Speaker 6: You to lose the game, right, right right?
30:59
Speaker 4: And now you talk about a coach, what's a coach
31:02
Speaker 4: tell you as a player about getting a technical? How
31:04
Speaker 4: what does he say to you about stay in Colm,
31:06
Speaker 4: You gotta stay calm, you can't get upset. But when
31:10
Speaker 4: I see you do it and you get a tacked
31:13
Speaker 4: and we lose the game, what example are you getting me?
31:17
Speaker 4: I think there's room if you are a coach and
31:21
Speaker 4: you are experiencing something like Dan Harley experience, where you're
31:24
Speaker 4: looking at just a series of bad calls you as
31:27
Speaker 4: a coach, it's almost like I have to stand up
31:31
Speaker 4: for my players, and I have to and at that point,
31:34
Speaker 4: I'm almost allowed to lose my coup to voice my
31:38
Speaker 4: opinion to the referees, and I have to make a
31:40
Speaker 4: statement to like, hey guys, this ain't I'm gonna handle this.
31:44
Speaker 4: I'll take it on, I'll take the text. I'll get
31:46
Speaker 4: kicked out, i'll get fined, but I have to say
31:49
Speaker 4: something to let these referees. Let the referees, let the conference,
31:53
Speaker 4: like whoever commissioners, let whoever know that this is wrong
31:56
Speaker 4: and we can't do this, and they have to fix
31:57
Speaker 4: it during endgame. So you have to say I think
32:01
Speaker 4: in that situation, you got to say something and it
32:04
Speaker 4: might and it might cause you to get kicked out,
32:05
Speaker 4: and I think your players are going to respect. Hey, hey,
32:07
Speaker 4: coach roll for us on that one. Okay, Lisa and.
32:12
Speaker 6: I agree to a point with Hollis, But I also
32:16
Speaker 6: think those referees they're not paid enough to to really
32:21
Speaker 6: call a game in favor of one team or another.
32:23
Speaker 6: I really think they're out there doing the best they can.
32:26
Speaker 6: And you may agree or disagree with what they call,
32:29
Speaker 6: but I really feel like what we've got out there,
32:32
Speaker 6: they're they're they're not biased. I mean, unless you want
32:36
Speaker 6: to go down this rabbit hole of conspiracy theory and say, well,
32:39
Speaker 6: you know they were for this team or just this
32:42
Speaker 6: team or whatever. I really feel like those referees are
32:45
Speaker 6: out there doing the best they can, and I don't
32:48
Speaker 6: I mean, you can, you can voice your concerns. You
32:51
Speaker 6: can say, Okay, I don't give this car, or you know,
32:54
Speaker 6: I agree with just a whatever, But I don't feel
32:57
Speaker 6: like they're out there trying to sabotage game. I don't
33:00
Speaker 6: see that.
33:01
Speaker 4: I agree with that. I don't think they're purposely trying
33:04
Speaker 4: to sabotage games. But just like a team, a coach
33:07
Speaker 4: or whoever, they can have a bad terrible night. I
33:10
Speaker 4: think refres have a bad terrible night too. Agree, But
33:14
Speaker 4: and they're bad or terrible night may cast it you
33:17
Speaker 4: the game. So so if I'm the coach and you're
33:20
Speaker 4: having just an awful night calling this game, you're missing
33:23
Speaker 4: everything that's in front of you. I gotta say something.
33:27
Speaker 4: But if you, as the coach, are having a bad night,
33:30
Speaker 4: or you and or we are talking about but but
33:33
Speaker 4: and or your players having your your star players having
33:36
Speaker 4: a bad we what do we say? Everybody's everybody's that's
33:40
Speaker 4: that's possible.
33:41
Speaker 2: Everybody else haveivale.
33:43
Speaker 4: If I'm having a bad night or my players are
33:45
Speaker 4: having a bad night, then then we just lost the game. Right.
33:49
Speaker 4: But if I'm having a good night, if I have
33:51
Speaker 4: a miniocre night, and now my refs, who are supposed
33:54
Speaker 4: to likely to say it's supposed to be unbiased, right,
33:57
Speaker 4: who is supposed to be impartial, and you're having a
33:59
Speaker 4: bad night, that's gonna cost me outside of what I
34:02
Speaker 4: can control. I gotta say something to you and you say, okay.
34:07
Speaker 6: And you know I mean, as a coach, how do
34:09
Speaker 6: you know that? I mean, unless you you have the
34:12
Speaker 6: TV in front of your face, how do you know
34:15
Speaker 6: that that that they're really that bad a call?
34:17
Speaker 4: We we know you donet been on the sidelines, coach,
34:21
Speaker 4: and you know you know, but I don't say nothing.
34:24
Speaker 4: That's fine that you talking about reasons, but were talking
34:26
Speaker 4: about whether you say some or not. But you know
34:28
Speaker 4: that referees is stinking it up that night. And if
34:30
Speaker 4: I know it, what's the benefit of me getting a fifteen?
34:33
Speaker 4: Because it's about It's not about it ain't even about
34:37
Speaker 4: that game, particularly in the game sport like basketball, where
34:39
Speaker 4: you can lose a couple of games. All right, that's
34:40
Speaker 4: that's fine. It's about the perception to your players. Because
34:45
Speaker 4: your players know you they haven't they stinking it up.
34:47
Speaker 4: The fans know they stinking it up. The coach know
34:49
Speaker 4: the refereees is stinking it up this night. And as
34:52
Speaker 4: a and as a as a coach, I got a
34:54
Speaker 4: ride for them. Particularly if you're sticking it up and
34:57
Speaker 4: all the calls is going against me. Here's what I'm
35:00
Speaker 4: do and and at least he's so locked in, I'm
35:03
Speaker 4: gonna just address this to you, all right, this is
35:06
Speaker 4: what I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna call a time out,
35:10
Speaker 4: I'm gonna bring my team over, and I'm gonna tell
35:13
Speaker 4: my team, Okay, look, this is not it's not going
35:19
Speaker 4: our way. This is not going our way.
35:21
Speaker 2: The calls are not gonna go our way.
35:23
Speaker 4: But there's a place in time in life that you're
35:25
Speaker 4: gonna be in a situation that life is not gonna
35:27
Speaker 4: point you in the right direction, and you don't get
35:30
Speaker 4: a chance to fight your way out of that. You
35:32
Speaker 4: have to rethink everything that you're doing and get back
35:35
Speaker 4: on some track that will get you going when you're
35:37
Speaker 4: doing to I feel you you're right on that, and
35:39
Speaker 4: I ain't saying you not right, all right, But what
35:42
Speaker 4: I'm saying is that particularly let's just say this, say this,
35:45
Speaker 4: and I was at a game recently and I won't
35:47
Speaker 4: call the the the teams or anything, that I was
35:50
Speaker 4: at a game recently, and it's ref I'm not saying
35:54
Speaker 4: he was picking on this particular player because this picture
35:56
Speaker 4: say he's rowdy, he's a passionate guy, right, but the
36:01
Speaker 4: calls got a little tiki tac. And I'm saying at
36:04
Speaker 4: that point, you as the coach, you gotta ride for
36:08
Speaker 4: your team. You gotta ride for that player. Because everybody's
36:11
Speaker 4: accountable on the field, is there, everybody on the court,
36:15
Speaker 4: Rather though, Lisa, listen to me, Now, there has to
36:22
Speaker 4: be a place in there where you have to be
36:28
Speaker 4: the example because and to me, I'm thinking, I'm going
36:33
Speaker 4: to try to be the example. That's I don't care
36:36
Speaker 4: what the call is now, I don't care how bad
36:38
Speaker 4: it is because I can, I can yell and scream
36:42
Speaker 4: and I have I know for a fact, I've had
36:44
Speaker 4: one hundred pass interferences and I probably only had I
36:46
Speaker 4: probably only really had fifty. But what was I going
36:49
Speaker 4: to do? What was I going to do? But I
36:55
Speaker 4: say this, you're you're right ninety percent of the time.
36:59
Speaker 4: That's the right mindset and that's the right thing to do.
37:02
Speaker 4: I'm talking about in those five to ten percent of time,
37:05
Speaker 4: like what Dan Hurley experienced, he should have been going crazy.
37:08
Speaker 4: Who he should have been gonna cause he was because
37:11
Speaker 4: he lost the game. And that's lit he lost the game.
37:13
Speaker 4: You win the locker room. You win the locker room.
37:16
Speaker 4: I don't know you're gonna win, and I'm telling you
37:18
Speaker 4: you're gonna win. You you lose the game, fine, you
37:21
Speaker 4: get fine, Fine, you may even get suspended, Fine, but
37:24
Speaker 4: you're gonna win. The boys or the women, they gonna
37:27
Speaker 4: ride for you like Coach ride for us.
37:30
Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
37:30
Speaker 4: In moments like this, it ain't about the game, it
37:33
Speaker 4: ain't about the winner losses, it ain't about nothing else.
37:35
Speaker 2: But you're gonna catch that that locker room you won
37:38
Speaker 2: him for the.
37:38
Speaker 4: Rest of the year. And I guarantee you from this game,
37:41
Speaker 4: they are gonna ride harder for Coach Hurly than they
37:44
Speaker 4: ever rolled before. That's what I'm saying. Moments like this,
37:47
Speaker 4: you win the locker room, and that's what you And
37:49
Speaker 4: that's why we've seen Bob Knight get kicked out, kick
37:53
Speaker 4: chairs go crazy. We seen and every time, not every time,
37:56
Speaker 4: some of that stuff he was, you know, he was
37:57
Speaker 4: probably just being too emotional. But in those special moments
38:01
Speaker 4: where really the referees really was sticking it up and
38:03
Speaker 4: he had a legitimate right, he won them boys, he
38:06
Speaker 4: won the locker room. That's what that moment was about.
38:09
Speaker 4: That's a locker room win. I'm selling him right down here.
38:12
Speaker 4: I'm preaching to him now. I'm preach to you now, but.
38:19
Speaker 6: I'm gonna preach back them.
38:20
Speaker 1: Okay, you may.
38:23
Speaker 6: Have won the locker room, but what kind of example
38:26
Speaker 6: did you set for those boys? Okay, to the next game.
38:30
Speaker 6: They go out there thinking, Okay, you know what I mean,
38:32
Speaker 6: I may mess up. I mean I may you know here,
38:35
Speaker 6: I might, I might just do a little personal foul
38:37
Speaker 6: here and there because coach coach will take care of it.
38:40
Speaker 6: I mean, there's the other side of it. I understand
38:43
Speaker 6: what you're saying, hollis that you know you win the
38:45
Speaker 6: players that they feel like coach has your back. But
38:48
Speaker 6: you also have to teach respect for I don't want
38:54
Speaker 6: to say authority, but respect.
38:57
Speaker 4: So yeah, that's that's that's authorities, right and and so you.
39:02
Speaker 6: Know, yeah, you know that they may be all fired up,
39:04
Speaker 6: but they're kids. And in the ultimate lesson of life
39:09
Speaker 6: as a coach, do you teach kids to respect what
39:14
Speaker 6: is going on in the game? And you learn that
39:18
Speaker 6: these reps, yeah, they suck, they think tonight, but you
39:22
Speaker 6: know what, the in the overall picture of it, we
39:25
Speaker 6: are going to be the better person or overcome it.
39:28
Speaker 6: You know, what if you lose a game because of calls,
39:32
Speaker 6: you probably shouldn't won a game anyway.
39:34
Speaker 4: But but I think, but I think and to your point,
39:37
Speaker 4: and I think everything is in context, right, I think
39:40
Speaker 4: he would be able to and I think he probably
39:42
Speaker 4: did explain himself in totality like look, this is the reasonable,
39:45
Speaker 4: Well this ain't the example. But you know, I think
39:48
Speaker 4: that I'm sure we are allowed. We are allowed to,
39:52
Speaker 4: like I said, if that's not your motive, Operandez, you're
39:55
Speaker 4: allowed to have those moments. And I think because we're
39:58
Speaker 4: talking about kids, these are grown in too and grown women, right,
40:01
Speaker 4: I think they're gonna understand in that moment, right, they
40:06
Speaker 4: understand that, like why you reacted that way in that
40:09
Speaker 4: specific moment, and that may not be a reflection of
40:12
Speaker 4: your overall character and how you you know, I don't,
40:14
Speaker 4: I don't. I don't. I don't judge him on his
40:16
Speaker 4: character or or who he is as as as a
40:18
Speaker 4: man or as a coach. I'm not judging that. I'm
40:21
Speaker 4: I'm judging that moment and in that moment, what I'm
40:25
Speaker 4: doing is I'm also, now, how do I tell you,
40:28
Speaker 4: as my player, don't say anything because it's my responsibility
40:33
Speaker 4: to deal with that. You told us that what you
40:35
Speaker 4: would say. I remember every game, or at least every
40:39
Speaker 4: I would say every game, you said, let me deal
40:41
Speaker 4: with the referees. That's what you would say. That's my job.
40:44
Speaker 4: Your job is to go out there and play. Listen
40:46
Speaker 4: to the coach of woo woo. Let me deal with
40:49
Speaker 4: the referees. That's your job as the coach. And and
40:52
Speaker 4: the way and and and my way of handling it
40:55
Speaker 4: was simply, I'm gonna ask the question and I wasn't
40:59
Speaker 4: got a call.
40:59
Speaker 2: And that's write ninety percent of the time, we ain't.
41:03
Speaker 4: Talking about that, So we're talking about them little five
41:06
Speaker 4: to ten percent of the time. That's where you might
41:08
Speaker 4: have to just go out and kick them. You know what, LISTA,
41:11
Speaker 4: that ten percent cost them a game, and that's fine.
41:14
Speaker 2: I don't.
41:14
Speaker 4: You won the locker room. You won the locker room,
41:17
Speaker 4: and you won your players. You won your players respect.
41:20
Speaker 4: So you're gonna go in. You're gonna go in and
41:22
Speaker 4: tell the guys that we lost this game because of
41:24
Speaker 4: the officials.
41:26
Speaker 2: No, no, I.
41:26
Speaker 4: Don't think you sayd what do you say?
41:29
Speaker 6: We're true?
41:30
Speaker 4: What's that? Go ahead? List? I'm sorry?
41:33
Speaker 6: Oh no, no, No, I'm just saying that's never true.
41:35
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I agree with that.
41:39
Speaker 6: To the cause of referee. Then you that that that
41:44
Speaker 6: cannot be the reason why you lost the game. There's
41:47
Speaker 6: so many other players that you had opportunities to not
41:51
Speaker 6: come down to a referees call. So I'll never buy.
41:56
Speaker 4: That because if you leave it to the official, the
41:59
Speaker 4: chances of you it's greater. We're not talking again. We're
42:03
Speaker 4: not talking about one or two calls. We're talking about
42:05
Speaker 4: a series of calls that was wretchet. We're talking about
42:08
Speaker 4: a series of We're talking about a game which they
42:12
Speaker 4: looked like they had blinders on.
42:14
Speaker 2: So I don't know if.
42:14
Speaker 4: I don't think all those calls were bad some I'm
42:18
Speaker 4: say some of them. But what I'm saying in that situation,
42:21
Speaker 4: you go in the locker room, you say, look, guys,
42:23
Speaker 4: it was up against us today. If things weren't right,
42:26
Speaker 4: we probably could have did X y Z better. Once
42:29
Speaker 4: we break down the film, we'll see exactly what we
42:31
Speaker 4: could have did better. But you know, it was a
42:34
Speaker 4: situation in which I didn't feel like we were being
42:37
Speaker 4: treated fairly. My guys, You guys weren't being treated fairly,
42:40
Speaker 4: and I had to come in there and make it known. Now,
42:43
Speaker 4: now did I overreact? Did da da da da da?
42:46
Speaker 4: Then you can go down that road. But if I
42:48
Speaker 4: don't feel like you're being treated fairly, I'm coming to
42:51
Speaker 4: ride with you no matter what. In those small and
42:55
Speaker 4: we don't see these situations every day. Now we're seeing
42:59
Speaker 4: this might be won two games a year that possibly yeah,
43:03
Speaker 4: so you gotta go crazy, you gotta go off.
43:07
Speaker 6: It's not a current exact currents that games are decided
43:11
Speaker 6: by referee call.
43:14
Speaker 4: And I will and and and like I said, I'm
43:16
Speaker 4: I'm watching the game now. Were some of those touchy
43:21
Speaker 4: touchy Yes, some of them I would I would like, well, yeah,
43:25
Speaker 4: that that actually is a foul. But once you got
43:27
Speaker 4: into it, it got so close and the and the
43:30
Speaker 4: call started going one way it. I can understand them
43:36
Speaker 4: it being ugly for them, but once they got once
43:39
Speaker 4: they got the tech, it was like, oh, y'all done now,
43:42
Speaker 4: but now that's that you got two shots. Now you
43:45
Speaker 4: got the ball. I almost compare to like John Thompson
43:48
Speaker 4: when he had like Alonzo morning and and Patrick Ewing.
43:51
Speaker 4: He would tell them, look that first shot to come
43:54
Speaker 4: in the lane, to go up. I don't care if
43:56
Speaker 4: it's got in or not. You knocked that thing into
43:58
Speaker 4: the stands. We'll take the will take the penalty, will
44:01
Speaker 4: take whatever. And I'm saying as a coach sometimes I
44:04
Speaker 4: ain't saying all the time. I'm saying one or two
44:06
Speaker 4: times a year, every other year, every couple of years,
44:09
Speaker 4: you gotta take that and you gotta ride for your boys. Okay,
44:12
Speaker 4: Now with saying that, yeah, I'm guilty. And again this
44:17
Speaker 4: is this is prior to all the CTE stuff. One
44:21
Speaker 4: of the things that I would say when I was
44:22
Speaker 4: coaching at State to the defensive guys, especially the guys
44:26
Speaker 4: in the secondary, A dude, come across the middle, but
44:29
Speaker 4: we'll take fifteen. Well, West, what I'm saying, we'll take
44:33
Speaker 4: that first fifteen. And that's what I'm saying that I
44:35
Speaker 4: ain't got nothing to say. And as a coach, you
44:37
Speaker 4: might have to take that fifteen from time to time.
44:40
Speaker 4: And I just think this time, particularly being early in
44:44
Speaker 4: the season, you just coming off a championship. This was
44:47
Speaker 4: my They they don't know what they done did to
44:49
Speaker 4: that program. I guarantee you they're gonna be in the tournament.
44:52
Speaker 4: And I would almost bet money I'm not even a gambler.
44:56
Speaker 4: But I would almost puck like a prop bet that
44:58
Speaker 4: they're gonna be in that championship again. Base Stop what
45:00
Speaker 4: happened there? They don't fueled that team, to fuel that
45:03
Speaker 4: coach for the whole season. Na, I'm telling you, I'm
45:07
Speaker 4: telling you, well, well I don't know how to start
45:10
Speaker 4: telling my best we start.
45:14
Speaker 6: Let need you the flip side of the guys, the
45:16
Speaker 6: flip side. So you you you're as a coach, you're
45:19
Speaker 6: not agreeing with what the referees are calling. Right, you're
45:22
Speaker 6: out there, you're doing the things or you're you know,
45:26
Speaker 6: doing whatever it is. And so then the referees get
45:30
Speaker 6: kind of because we're all human, they're human, we're all
45:34
Speaker 6: out there a sporting event. We're all humans. So then
45:37
Speaker 6: they got in their mind, well this coach is mass
45:40
Speaker 6: Oh sorry, probably shouldn't say the're on the air, but anyway,
45:44
Speaker 6: So don't you think that that kind of like puts
45:49
Speaker 6: it in the favor of the they're gonna call call
45:53
Speaker 6: tiki tack calls because they think that you are being
45:58
Speaker 6: what I said.
45:59
Speaker 4: I would agree, I mean, I agree with you on that,
46:02
Speaker 4: I agree with it, but again we're not I don't
46:03
Speaker 4: think we're talking about just like the average game. I
46:05
Speaker 4: think we're talking about those just unique circumstances like what
46:09
Speaker 4: happened the other night against All. I mean it was.
46:15
Speaker 2: It was perfectly set up and structured for this mess.
46:19
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it was.
46:20
Speaker 2: I mean everything possible was in line.
46:23
Speaker 4: For this and it's gonna be good. I think this
46:24
Speaker 4: is gonna be This is gonna be great for Yukon.
46:27
Speaker 4: All Right, we don't have much time, but I want to.
46:29
Speaker 4: I really want to jump into Dion Sanders and his
46:34
Speaker 4: conversation on Travis Hunter.
46:41
Speaker 2: He's upset because he didn't get he didn't get he didn't.
46:43
Speaker 4: Get one of the awards. We didn't getting considered for them.
46:46
Speaker 4: He didn't get considered for award, which goes to the
46:51
Speaker 4: best best defens wasn't even wasn't even in the top three. Okaye, Okay,
47:01
Speaker 4: Why do you think that? Why do I think it happened? Yeah,
47:05
Speaker 4: because it's deon. My my personal reason. I think it's
47:08
Speaker 4: de on. I think if he would have been in
47:13
Speaker 4: the three and the three, if he was in the
47:16
Speaker 4: three in the selection, he wasn't even in the three,
47:21
Speaker 4: and this is the best player in the country. That
47:26
Speaker 4: happens to be a defensive back. It just happens to
47:28
Speaker 4: be a defensive back. How can he not be in
47:32
Speaker 4: the three?
47:33
Speaker 6: So why is he not?
47:35
Speaker 2: I mean, I think again, I.
47:37
Speaker 4: Think there's I think there's the reality of how much
47:41
Speaker 4: can we give the prime? How much can we really
47:45
Speaker 4: So you think this has to do with Dion, I
47:47
Speaker 4: think it's see and again, and I definitely think he
47:50
Speaker 4: should have been considered, if not won award. But I
47:53
Speaker 4: would also say, I think what maybe whoever's on that
47:56
Speaker 4: committee or whoever's choosing those players, I think they may
47:59
Speaker 4: be looking at For example, I think they I think
48:03
Speaker 4: sometimes number one, I think they're looking at, well, he's
48:05
Speaker 4: probably gonna get the Heisman anyway, or he's gonna get
48:07
Speaker 4: considered for that, So we don't so we can't. So
48:10
Speaker 4: you're right, I'm not saying that. I'm just trying to
48:12
Speaker 4: jump into the mind so we can kind of shift
48:14
Speaker 4: this award. We can look at other players and three
48:18
Speaker 4: and two. What I also think and I would be
48:20
Speaker 4: interested who's on this committee because I think one of
48:23
Speaker 4: the knocks they tried to make about Travis Hunter is
48:25
Speaker 4: that he doesn't have enough tackles. And what they don't
48:28
Speaker 4: realize is that if you a cornerback specifically or a safety,
48:32
Speaker 4: and you got a whole bunch of tackles, your defense
48:34
Speaker 4: got a whole bunch of problems. Whole bunch of problems.
48:36
Speaker 4: And number one, if you don't have a bunch of interceptions,
48:39
Speaker 4: that might actually be a good thing because that means
48:42
Speaker 4: people ain't throwing to you. So I think how they're
48:45
Speaker 4: maybe assessing the defensive back position. And if you're only
48:48
Speaker 4: looking at stats, then it may go the other way.
48:51
Speaker 4: But you have to actually look at the game. But specifically,
48:55
Speaker 4: when you talk about a defensive back, you have to
48:58
Speaker 4: look at the game. You cannot look at that stat shee.
49:00
Speaker 4: That doesn't really tell you the story, right, Yeah, miss Lisa.
49:05
Speaker 6: Oh, I'm really torn on this. I feel like he
49:10
Speaker 6: should have been nominated for this award, But I also
49:15
Speaker 6: feel like, you know, I love Prime. I think he's great,
49:19
Speaker 6: but I think sometimes his presence intimidates people and and
49:25
Speaker 6: maybe they they want to back away from him and
49:29
Speaker 6: maybe look at other players because of the fact that
49:32
Speaker 6: he's playing for Prime. I don't know, but I really
49:37
Speaker 6: feel like he should have been nominated. I think it's sad.
49:42
Speaker 6: I don't know what the reasoning could be. But you know,
49:47
Speaker 6: I don't know.
49:48
Speaker 4: I think they're looking at stats and and I think
49:51
Speaker 4: that you can. You cannot look at a defensive back
49:53
Speaker 4: and just you cannot look at the stat sheet.
49:55
Speaker 2: No you you you can't.
49:56
Speaker 4: You legitimately have to really watch the game. Watch what
49:59
Speaker 4: I'm saying. I think every other position and I would
50:02
Speaker 4: say this defensive back in offensive linemen, yes, you can't
50:07
Speaker 4: necessarily just look at the stat You have to watch
50:09
Speaker 4: the game. Everybody else you can kind of assess thats
50:12
Speaker 4: and kind of you maybe that may be your starting point,
50:14
Speaker 4: but those two positions, you got to watch the game.
50:16
Speaker 4: And again speaking to your perfect example of you know,
50:20
Speaker 4: getting interceptions one season and then not getting them the
50:24
Speaker 4: next season, because if you got x number of if
50:28
Speaker 4: you're playing corner and you get x number of interceptions
50:31
Speaker 4: one season, and we and we we've tested you, and
50:34
Speaker 4: we realized, Okay, no, we don't want to go there.
50:36
Speaker 4: They're gonna go the other way. They're gonna go all
50:38
Speaker 4: the way and you ain't gonna get a chance to
50:41
Speaker 4: get no intercept break up breakups.
50:43
Speaker 2: Your stats are gonna be horrible. Yeah, the only thing you.
50:46
Speaker 4: Got it starts and the thing is and and the
50:49
Speaker 4: thing is is a defensive back. I would almost say
50:52
Speaker 4: the least that you got, almost it's almost the better,
50:56
Speaker 4: because that just means that ain't nobody coming at your way.
50:58
Speaker 4: They're they're really a void and you and you got
51:00
Speaker 4: a whole side or a whole quarter of the field
51:02
Speaker 4: that you're just completely shutting down. You look at guys
51:05
Speaker 4: like Ronnie Lott, those kind of safeties, they're not getting
51:09
Speaker 4: that for the most part, they don't get a lot
51:11
Speaker 4: of interceptions because they're not. Nobody's really throwing a post
51:14
Speaker 4: route when you know, when you know that dude is
51:17
Speaker 4: right there because me is the receiver, I'm not going
51:19
Speaker 4: in there, So don't even think about real skin. And
51:25
Speaker 4: I think the fact that knowing you have to understand
51:28
Speaker 4: that reality in order to to judge or the critique,
51:34
Speaker 4: and because if you don't, you're gonna cheat, you're gonna cheap.
51:36
Speaker 4: That maybe based off that so maybe based off that
51:40
Speaker 4: far as that committee or that select whoever does that
51:42
Speaker 4: selection of the Thorpe Award, maybe they're saying, well, look,
51:46
Speaker 4: these guys, they're being tested, they're going to these guys,
51:49
Speaker 4: and these guys are performing when they got the action
51:51
Speaker 4: their way. So based off that these these guys are
51:55
Speaker 4: the best seeing.
51:56
Speaker 2: Versus seeing action, we're not seeing action.
51:58
Speaker 4: So based off these guys are actually in the midst
52:01
Speaker 4: of the action, then there may be more deserving for
52:04
Speaker 4: this specific award. Although we're saying Travis Hunter is probably
52:08
Speaker 4: the best player overall. You see what I'm saying, I do,
52:11
Speaker 4: And that's really great a knowledge, it really is.
52:14
Speaker 6: It doesn't matter because he's already said, already saying.
52:21
Speaker 4: He's gonna get one right.
52:26
Speaker 6: From when he wanted. So he's gonna get one.
52:29
Speaker 4: I bet he gives it to it. But but I
52:31
Speaker 4: don't think he. I don't know if he can appreciate it,
52:33
Speaker 4: but I don't know if he deserves it. Like I said,
52:35
Speaker 4: if you're looking at the best I'm just saying following
52:37
Speaker 4: me because I actually may be reconsidered if you're looking
52:40
Speaker 4: at the best defensive back. Again, I'm saying you can't
52:43
Speaker 4: look at statue. You have to look holistically. But if
52:46
Speaker 4: I'm saying, like, look, these are the three guys that
52:49
Speaker 4: are actually seeing the most action. They're seeing everything come
52:52
Speaker 4: their way, running backs, passes, all that, and they've actually
52:55
Speaker 4: performed well in the midst of the action, then they
52:58
Speaker 4: may be the better choice for that specif civic award,
53:01
Speaker 4: although they although you know, Hunter probably is more right
53:04
Speaker 4: for a Heisman type of ward. But I think to
53:07
Speaker 4: not get considered is the problem. I'm not saying he
53:10
Speaker 4: probably should have won it, but I'm saying he's number three.
53:13
Speaker 4: I'm not I'm not sure he should have won it,
53:19
Speaker 4: but I'll say, you gotta get considered. But I but
53:21
Speaker 4: if I'm looking at it, and I'm saying, like, look,
53:23
Speaker 4: these guys saw the action and they performed in the action,
53:26
Speaker 4: where he's not necessarily seeing the same level action just
53:29
Speaker 4: because of who he is and his his acumen right now,
53:32
Speaker 4: so I'm saying I would probably give it to one
53:35
Speaker 4: of the others guys, but you gotta you gotta consider him.
53:37
Speaker 4: That's that's kind of just crazy to not considering.
53:41
Speaker 6: But like I said before, I think I think it's
53:44
Speaker 6: it is definitely a sign or a look at you know, proms.
53:51
Speaker 6: I mean that they're they're tired of him. I think
53:53
Speaker 6: the media is tired of him.
53:55
Speaker 2: I don't know if this is a prime thing, but
53:58
Speaker 2: but I don't know.
53:59
Speaker 4: One of the interesting question hollis that you ask is
54:02
Speaker 4: like you don't know who's on the committee. That's what
54:04
Speaker 4: That's what bothers me is these committees make these decisions
54:08
Speaker 4: and nobody knows who who's even making it, or the
54:11
Speaker 4: criteria or what the criteria is, Like, what are you
54:14
Speaker 4: judging it on? What made you decide that he wasn't
54:17
Speaker 4: even in the top three? Because I can understand there.
54:21
Speaker 4: I think I can sort of maybe without knowing him,
54:24
Speaker 4: and I think I can sort of climb into what
54:26
Speaker 4: they're thinking about it, you know what I'm saying. Again,
54:28
Speaker 4: But to your point, are they watching the games? Because
54:32
Speaker 4: if you're not watching the games and you're looking at
54:35
Speaker 4: a stat line, that's going to lead you down a
54:37
Speaker 4: different road.
54:38
Speaker 2: Absolutely you know what I mean? Absolutely so.
54:41
Speaker 4: And it's one of those things where you have so
54:43
Speaker 4: many you know, obviously defensive backs to consider because what
54:46
Speaker 4: I would really like him to do, like I think
54:49
Speaker 4: it should be maybe a bigger panel, and they nail
54:52
Speaker 4: it down to let's say ten guys, right, and then
54:55
Speaker 4: those ten and then those ten guys, then who's ever
54:57
Speaker 4: the selection committee? They have to watch every single game
55:02
Speaker 4: once he gets narrowed down, because you can't watch every
55:03
Speaker 4: one hundred and subplus game, right, but once he gets
55:06
Speaker 4: narrowed down, Okay, we can sit in these five or
55:08
Speaker 4: ten guys. Then you got to go back and watch
55:10
Speaker 4: every single one of those games and you have to
55:12
Speaker 4: do an analysis game by game, and then you come
55:15
Speaker 4: up with it. They could have done that with the
55:16
Speaker 4: three games. They could have done three games.
55:19
Speaker 2: Not three three tumping three guys.
55:20
Speaker 4: No, when when they got down to three guys, they
55:22
Speaker 4: could look at those games.
55:23
Speaker 2: Okay, even that, whatever you get.
55:26
Speaker 4: Once you get down to the last group. But I'm saying,
55:29
Speaker 4: like I'm saying, like, get a bigger group. Like what
55:31
Speaker 4: I'm saying is get about ten groups. That's gonna narrow
55:34
Speaker 4: you down to three, your three finalists, and then from
55:37
Speaker 4: the finalists you go from there. You see, you sit
55:40
Speaker 4: nail it all the way down because I because again.
55:42
Speaker 6: Easy, it's so easy for us to look from the
55:45
Speaker 6: outside end and say this, this should happen, that should happen.
55:49
Speaker 6: You know what I mean. I don't I don't know
55:50
Speaker 6: what the committee looks like that. I think they're doing
55:53
Speaker 6: the best they can.
55:54
Speaker 4: But if you getting paid to do it, you gotta
55:56
Speaker 4: you can't be paid.
55:57
Speaker 2: You can't do that. You can't beat that far off.
56:00
Speaker 4: Yeah, you can't be that far. You cannot be you
56:01
Speaker 4: cannot have him. I mean, a potential Player of the Year,
56:04
Speaker 4: come on, is not even in the position that he's playing.
56:08
Speaker 4: He's not even nominated. That's crazy. I mean that that's yeah,
56:12
Speaker 4: that's I mean, how does that work?
56:14
Speaker 6: I just love you?
