- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart
- 0:07Speaker 1: podcasts Massive News. Here in NHL Unscripted, that's right Milestone
- 0:23Speaker 1: day as this is episode number twenty. But more importantly, JD.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Much like an NHL player double shifting come playoff time
- 0:30Speaker 1: short shifts, we're also double shifted. We're going to twice
- 0:32Speaker 1: a week or at NHL Unscripted. Give it to me.
- 0:34Speaker 1: What do you got, come out to be a better
- 0:43Speaker 1: name me a better James Hetfield. I'll hang up and listen.
- 0:45Speaker 1: We are ready to rock. Come on Mondays and Thursdays. Buddy.
- 0:48Speaker 1: This is gonna be awesome. And obviously we're gonna be
- 0:50Speaker 1: locked in. Maybe not as many guests, that's fine. You know,
- 0:52Speaker 1: players are actually busy in the NHL playoffs, but we'll
- 0:55Speaker 1: have retired players and of course we'll have strong opinions,
- 0:57Speaker 1: will be all over the hockey. This is gonna be great, man,
- 0:59Speaker 1: We're gonna be locked in the next couple of months.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Can't wait.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's gonna be so. I feel like it's
- 1:03Speaker 2: such an exciting playoff this year because you know, a
- 1:06Speaker 2: lot of the normal names that we typically see, you know,
- 1:08Speaker 2: the Bruins, the Penguins they're all out. The Rangers they're gone,
- 1:11Speaker 2: they out, So we're gonna have some new blood.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Exactly, we're gonna talk with the playoff matchups that we
- 1:15Speaker 1: do know on today's episode. Plus, the great Mike Rupple
- 1:18Speaker 1: joined us. Rubbers one of our favorites obviously at NHL.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Neverk He's a great guy, great storyteller. He'll tell us
- 1:23Speaker 1: why he once told Jody Shelley he was irrelevant, Plus
- 1:26Speaker 1: his thoughts on this NHL season. Rubber is always a
- 1:28Speaker 1: good time. I gotta tell you Jady Edmonton's well, as
- 1:31Speaker 1: you know having played there. It's an awesome arena. Rogers
- 1:34Speaker 1: Place is awesome. It's a great place to watching him.
- 1:35Speaker 1: The fans are awesome. But a snooze fest. I endured
- 1:38Speaker 1: on the finale of the inaugural season of Pome Late
- 1:40Speaker 1: at Hockey and just an awful game. Let's be honest,
- 1:43Speaker 1: nine regulars missing it of Edmonton's line, including David Dryslottle,
- 1:46Speaker 1: the Kings lock up home ice and as you look
- 1:49Speaker 1: at this series specifically, I'm gonna be honest me, I
- 1:51Speaker 1: kind of I'm kind of leaning Kings to win this series.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Fourth time. Perhaps is a charm. What do you got?
- 1:56Speaker 2: Oh man, this is tough. And you know, somebody just
- 1:59Speaker 2: asked me and they're like, what do you guys think
- 2:01Speaker 2: of you know, ask me, what did I think of
- 2:03Speaker 2: the oilers and games ago? I said, probably they're going
- 2:06Speaker 2: to be the Kings. Ever since then, it just just
- 2:09Speaker 2: not felt right. Something feels off with not only the injuries,
- 2:13Speaker 2: and you know, McDavid just came out and said, you know,
- 2:15Speaker 2: we're not a walking you know, medical unit or whatever
- 2:18Speaker 2: he said, whatever the the phraseers. He says, we're gonna
- 2:21Speaker 2: be ready to go. But it just doesn't The vibes
- 2:24Speaker 2: are off. I've been saying it's been a couple of
- 2:26Speaker 2: weeks now, the vibes do not feel right. The Kings
- 2:28Speaker 2: look like they're primed to go better goaltending this year.
- 2:31Speaker 2: This is the best defensive team in the league. If
- 2:33Speaker 2: there's a team that can shut down Connor McDavid, Leon
- 2:36Speaker 2: Drey said, you know, it's definitely the Kings. And now
- 2:39Speaker 2: they got whole ice, the best home ice team in
- 2:41Speaker 2: the league, and I just feel like they have so
- 2:43Speaker 2: many things going for them to finally get over that hump.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Now.
- 2:46Speaker 2: I don't know what the Kings are gonna do after
- 2:48Speaker 2: round one, but I think my pick is probably in.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I think the Kings in seven, maybe six. You know,
- 2:54Speaker 2: even if they get healthy the Oilers, and I think
- 2:57Speaker 2: they will. This is a team that battles hard, and
- 3:00Speaker 2: you know, they played through so many injuries last year.
- 3:03Speaker 2: It just doesn't feel like there's enough going for them.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Even in NATS too. They don't even know what their
- 3:08Speaker 2: goaltending situation is going to be. Stuart Skinner was hurt
- 3:11Speaker 2: for eight games, comes back, you know, kind of thrown
- 3:13Speaker 2: to the Wolves their last game against the Kings, and
- 3:16Speaker 2: you know.
- 3:16Speaker 1: They Calvin Pickard played last night. Didn't take Piclary, Well.
- 3:19Speaker 2: It was Pickard, Yeah, okay, it was Pickered last night. Okay,
- 3:21Speaker 2: it wasn't Skinner. I thought Skinner was in for the
- 3:23Speaker 2: Kings game. My bad there, that's me watching too much hockey.
- 3:27Speaker 2: But yeah, uh, Stuart Skinner versus Calvin Pickard, who do
- 3:31Speaker 2: you start? Chris Nablock came out and said, you know,
- 3:34Speaker 2: whoever's going is going to get the start, and don't.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I just don't know. It's just I think the King's
- 3:38Speaker 2: got too much going for him, and maybe I'm gonna
- 3:40Speaker 2: look like an asshole here and you know Edmonton's gonna
- 3:43Speaker 2: sweep him again. But I just don't think it. I
- 3:46Speaker 2: don't think it's the case this year. I just think
- 3:48Speaker 2: it's too many changes in the offseason. It's just they
- 3:51Speaker 2: haven't found their groove for a long period of time
- 3:53Speaker 2: and they don't have that magic that they had last year.
- 3:55Speaker 2: So I'm gonna say, yeah, Kings, and it's the King's time.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I think it makes me think of the four NBA
- 4:01Speaker 1: Finals the Pistons beat the Lakers. One of the best
- 4:03Speaker 1: signs there. It said a full house beats a pair
- 4:06Speaker 1: of vases. You know, back that it was Shaq and
- 4:07Speaker 1: Kobe and the Pistons, which collectively Chauncy Bubbs for Pamplet
- 4:10Speaker 1: et cetera, which is to say, the Kings have the
- 4:12Speaker 1: collective better team. And I'm glad you mentioned Kemper. He's
- 4:15Speaker 1: neck and neck right now at Hellibuck for goals against average.
- 4:17Speaker 1: He's not gonna win the VESDA, but I think he's
- 4:19Speaker 1: gonna be a VESNA finalist. You mentioned the home I
- 4:21Speaker 1: switch we've talked about, which I was talking to some
- 4:22Speaker 1: of the Kings guys. They actually don't draw as well
- 4:24Speaker 1: as you might think. Talnos is being in LA, they're
- 4:26Speaker 1: actually like nineteenth or twentieth. Then tendants, I thought, oh,
- 4:28Speaker 1: they've got this rock as home crowd, like now there's
- 4:30Speaker 1: a twelve thousand Diarges. But they but they yeah, but
- 4:33Speaker 1: it's not like a crazy home crowd. But they played
- 4:35Speaker 1: exceptional on home, greater depth than Edmonton and particularly down
- 4:38Speaker 1: the middle. Now, we did talk to Jason Strudwick, former Oiler,
- 4:42Speaker 1: as you would appreciate an excellent defenseman six in our
- 4:44Speaker 1: games we played seven hundred. He got a beat. But
- 4:46Speaker 1: I asked Strutti, I said, what's the difference between this
- 4:48Speaker 1: year's Oilers team In the last he goes that the
- 4:50Speaker 1: previous Oilers teams were faster because they had more speed.
- 4:54Speaker 1: This team's got a theoretically a little bit more toughness grit,
- 4:56Speaker 1: he said, But we don't know if Frederick's gonna play.
- 4:59Speaker 1: That comes out, which is massive because that coming up
- 5:01Speaker 1: with the person one is massive, enormous. So he said,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you're really you're really relying so have always topic, but
- 5:07Speaker 1: it's even more so it's more pronounced. Expecting Drysal McDavid
- 5:10Speaker 1: to carry them. Now, the guy which has had been
- 5:12Speaker 1: injuries obviously the season Dujuen Hopkins. You know, six twenty
- 5:15Speaker 1: goal season. He hasn't been a stud. So I'm with you.
- 5:17Speaker 1: On paper, it feels like the Kings.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Yeah, and you said it. I forgot to mention at
- 5:22Speaker 2: come being hurt for the first round is such a
- 5:25Speaker 2: huge blow. Now you really got to rely on a
- 5:28Speaker 2: Darnell Nurse who listen. I saw the video of that
- 5:31Speaker 2: from they had the camera inside the net. Yeah, and
- 5:34Speaker 2: it was not good. It wasn't good. But this just
- 5:37Speaker 2: adds fuel to the fire. I tell you what. The
- 5:38Speaker 2: one thing that this series is gonna be is gonna
- 5:41Speaker 2: be dirty. It's gonna be tough.
- 5:43Speaker 4: You know.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I love what Denno said about you know, they dressed
- 5:45Speaker 2: their B squad and then Corey Perry came out and
- 5:47Speaker 2: was like, what fuck do you expect? She's like, what
- 5:49Speaker 2: do you think? What do you think we can do?
- 5:51Speaker 2: He's like, look at our injury list. He's like, we
- 5:53Speaker 2: have to this is what we have to dress. And
- 5:55Speaker 2: I think something like that's going to piss off that team.
- 5:57Speaker 2: And so it's there's gonna be a lot on the line,
- 6:00Speaker 2: a lot of a lot of hard a lot of uh,
- 6:02Speaker 2: you know, a lot of pride in this series, and
- 6:05Speaker 2: you know, Edmonton can't go out in the first round.
- 6:07Speaker 2: It'll be devastating if they do. And the Kings can't
- 6:10Speaker 2: go out in the first round or they blow this
- 6:12Speaker 2: whole thing up.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And it's interesting, you know with regards to this King's team,
- 6:17Speaker 1: like I don't think Jack Adams talks to say what
- 6:19Speaker 1: you're looking for today. But Jim Hiller is done a
- 6:20Speaker 1: great job coaching the team. They might be in the
- 6:22Speaker 1: mixing star has been a flows lots of great choices,
- 6:24Speaker 1: obviously Huskepteen Evanson, Marty Saint Louis, the Habs, get In Carbery,
- 6:28Speaker 1: obviously the Capitals. But I do think to your point
- 6:30Speaker 1: with the Kings and Oilers, that sense of nastiness like that,
- 6:33Speaker 1: that is something that is fun to think about because
- 6:35Speaker 1: Oilers have had their numbers so many times, as you said,
- 6:38Speaker 1: and when we ask Chris Knablock in the morning, what's
- 6:40Speaker 1: the series, and that come down to you because probably
- 6:41Speaker 1: special teams. This sounds like a made up statue d
- 6:44Speaker 1: but Jack Jack Michael, who calls the Oilers game set
- 6:46Speaker 1: it with authority. The Oiler's power play the last three
- 6:49Speaker 1: years against the Kings is forty eight percent. That is unbelievable.
- 6:53Speaker 1: So if the Kings just have some semblance of a
- 6:56Speaker 1: penalty kill, they should win this series.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I remember, I think it was two years ago, their
- 7:01Speaker 2: power play was clipping at like sixty over six percent,
- 7:04Speaker 2: and you're like, and the games are all tight. I mean,
- 7:07Speaker 2: you could fucking keep one out. You're gonna they're gonna
- 7:10Speaker 2: sweep them. So, you know, if I think they've known,
- 7:13Speaker 2: you know, we've been saying it for like a month.
- 7:15Speaker 2: They've known now that they're playing the Oilers, So they
- 7:18Speaker 2: should be doing everything they can watching power play clips
- 7:22Speaker 2: and figuring out to design some new sort of penalty
- 7:24Speaker 2: kill that they can implement, because they just gotta. You know,
- 7:28Speaker 2: they get through Edmonton and listen, it's they this is
- 7:32Speaker 2: a big one for him. It's you know, it's funny
- 7:34Speaker 2: you equate this. I'm not saying. I'm not saying that
- 7:36Speaker 2: the Kings are anything close to the Chicago Bulls, but
- 7:38Speaker 2: it was like Chicago Bulls Detroit Piston's era, but they
- 7:41Speaker 2: just couldn't get past this one team. And I think
- 7:44Speaker 2: that is the big reason why they're gonna get by him,
- 7:46Speaker 2: is this means a lot more to them than it
- 7:49Speaker 2: does the Oilers. Not to say that the oilers doesn't
- 7:51Speaker 2: mean something to win a Cup, but this series, a
- 7:54Speaker 2: lot of these guys that have went through these losses
- 7:56Speaker 2: in these series are gonna be this is like, we
- 7:58Speaker 2: cannot lose this boys, Like the belief that we finally
- 8:01Speaker 2: got their number is going to be there. And I
- 8:02Speaker 2: think there's just been too much always in Edmonton and
- 8:05Speaker 2: it's just been a little too it's been too choppy.
- 8:08Speaker 2: You know, the water's been choppy all year. You hear it.
- 8:11Speaker 2: The the group just doesn't seem as tight as it
- 8:13Speaker 2: was last year, Like it seems like a little bit
- 8:15Speaker 2: of a distant group when you you you look at
- 8:18Speaker 2: the underlying you know, guys talk, all the guys they
- 8:20Speaker 2: brought and I just don't think it's geled. And and
- 8:22Speaker 2: you know, my biggest thing is you need chemistry if
- 8:25Speaker 2: you want to if you want to go far in
- 8:26Speaker 2: the playoffs, you get to have a team that loves
- 8:28Speaker 2: each other. And I just don't know if there's a
- 8:29Speaker 2: lot of love there.
- 8:30Speaker 1: I'm with you. One last loot on Chris. Noblock tells
- 8:33Speaker 1: buddy Elliott Freeman last year called him Comato's Chris, which
- 8:36Speaker 1: he meant as a compliment because he's still calm, but
- 8:38Speaker 1: when he's talking, that's all him envisional. I'm like this guy,
- 8:40Speaker 1: his heartbeats at fifty five the entire time.
- 8:43Speaker 2: He has zero. Now block does not have he doesn't
- 8:45Speaker 2: have a pulse. He must just go in the room.
- 8:48Speaker 2: He must just go in the room and like close
- 8:50Speaker 2: the door and just be like you start screaming into
- 8:54Speaker 2: a pill.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Like he's that guy, like because he has no emotion,
- 8:59Speaker 1: just like where where do you bear the body?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Just where do you bear? You see him in a
- 9:03Speaker 2: car in the parking lot after they get just shaking
- 9:05Speaker 2: the wheel.
- 9:07Speaker 1: His demeanor's hilarious. We're gonna go through these other stories.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I'll be honest, I don't really care about the stories,
- 9:12Speaker 1: So I'm giving you a one minute.
- 9:13Speaker 2: To talk about it.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Devils and Hurricanes, two teams, haven't met since a back
- 9:16Speaker 1: to back December twenty seventh and twenty eighth. They've split
- 9:18Speaker 1: their four meetings this season. Now the team looks impressive.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Devils are missing Jack Hughes. I really couldn't care less.
- 9:23Speaker 1: What do you got? Knes and six?
- 9:26Speaker 2: Here's the thing I was looking I was just looking
- 9:28Speaker 2: at that before. Don't we went on New Jersey Devils
- 9:32Speaker 2: have one of the better power plays in the NHL.
- 9:35Speaker 2: With or without Jack Hughes. They're also top five in
- 9:39Speaker 2: the league in goals against. Markstrom can steal a couple
- 9:42Speaker 2: of games. This is gonna get super interesting. And I
- 9:45Speaker 2: think there's a lot more pressure on the Carolina Hurricanes
- 9:48Speaker 2: in the New Jersey Devils. I think everybody's been talking
- 9:50Speaker 2: this is a hard matchup. This is a hard matchup.
- 9:53Speaker 2: The Hurricanes have been known to dry up offensively. And
- 9:56Speaker 2: I'm not just saying that. I listen. I root for
- 9:58Speaker 2: Jordan Martinook. He's a fan of Unscripted. I want to win. Yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 2: I want him to and I want that you know
- 10:05Speaker 2: that team. I think there's some guys that are deserving
- 10:08Speaker 2: to get past this, this Devil's team. But man, Devils
- 10:12Speaker 2: are gonna take this game. This series is like Bolted.
- 10:14Speaker 2: This whole series and the lead up is like ouh,
- 10:16Speaker 2: they're done. It's gonna be over, I know, afterthought, afterthought,
- 10:19Speaker 2: they go on to Carolina and they steal a game.
- 10:22Speaker 2: It is gonna get super interesting. And if Jacob Markstrom
- 10:25Speaker 2: can be the guy that they paid for, he can
- 10:28Speaker 2: steal some games. I don't know him against Freddie Anderson.
- 10:32Speaker 2: I listen at times that the Devils, Yeah, I do,
- 10:35Speaker 2: and and honestly, I just think it's something interesting with
- 10:38Speaker 2: that power play. Again, a lot of these playoffs, these
- 10:41Speaker 2: first rounds come down to special teams because there's a
- 10:43Speaker 2: lot of power plays early, because guys are excited, they're
- 10:45Speaker 2: hitting the running round. I just feel like this is
- 10:48Speaker 2: kind of one of those sneaky ones. I'm still gonna
- 10:51Speaker 2: take Carolina to win, but I think it's gonna be
- 10:53Speaker 2: a lot tighter than people think.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Can I call an advantage for the Hurricanes the fact
- 10:57Speaker 1: that Sheldon Keith is coaching the Devils for Carolina?
- 11:03Speaker 2: Wow, Spike, see for Sheldon. Keep you going after the
- 11:06Speaker 2: coaches that I love it. No Block Star thinking of
- 11:10Speaker 2: now is now Block in the car, shaking the wheel,
- 11:13Speaker 2: punching a pillow. Use your words, Chris.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Stars, Avalanche, I cannot wait. This is musty TV. If
- 11:20Speaker 1: you're a hockey fan of any measure, this is unbelievable.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And I want to go against you because you called
- 11:24Speaker 1: the Avalanche like a month ago, and the Stars are
- 11:26Speaker 1: limping towards the playoffs. I've lost five straight, don't look great,
- 11:29Speaker 1: but I think I hope they can flip a switch
- 11:31Speaker 1: and this will be a great series. Dallas Prickley defensively,
- 11:33Speaker 1: JD's been issued, looked at their numbers, gave no pick
- 11:35Speaker 1: thirty two shots a game that's not going to cut
- 11:36Speaker 1: it against Colorado, but it is the Ransom and Bowl.
- 11:39Speaker 1: What kind of reception is you're gonna get in Colorado
- 11:41Speaker 1: in this series? And it feels like in some ways
- 11:44Speaker 1: the winner this series could be the favorite to when
- 11:45Speaker 1: the Stanley Cup. That's how good a first round this is.
- 11:48Speaker 2: Yeah, Landiskog's coming back to on top of that, just
- 11:51Speaker 2: announced his.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Ropper's not crazy about that pick. More than that lie,
- 11:54Speaker 1: I know it.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Yeah, but if you if he watched he doesn't watch
- 11:57Speaker 2: HL games, but if you saw any of those games,
- 11:59Speaker 2: he looked very good. He looked fantastic. I've another inside
- 12:04Speaker 2: the Kremlin. Jason de Murz.
- 12:07Speaker 1: By the way, the Devildovs Scottie report was unbelievable.
- 12:09Speaker 2: How great was that I hit it? Are even we're
- 12:12Speaker 2: not gonna touch on that. We'll touch on that after,
- 12:14Speaker 2: but I fucking hit that one out of the park.
- 12:16Speaker 2: But no that I talked to some people within Colorado
- 12:18Speaker 2: Avalanche and again within the organization, and they just said
- 12:22Speaker 2: the same thing. He is gonna play if he wants
- 12:25Speaker 2: to play. Bet Nurse came out and said as much.
- 12:27Speaker 2: He doesn't. He's not playing twenty minutes a night. He's
- 12:30Speaker 2: gonna play ten, eleven, twelve. He might end up getting
- 12:32Speaker 2: some power play time in that net front position, which
- 12:36Speaker 2: he does so good, and again he stirs shit up.
- 12:39Speaker 2: There's videos of him in those games with the Colorado Eagles.
- 12:43Speaker 2: He's grabbing guys, He's literally has him in a choke hold.
- 12:47Speaker 2: He's just ready to go, and I think you're seeing
- 12:49Speaker 2: all the emotion come out of him of how long
- 12:51Speaker 2: he battled. This is just gonna be something that's gonna
- 12:54Speaker 2: be very, very fun to watch. And I just think
- 12:57Speaker 2: Colorado has much too much around him to not be
- 13:02Speaker 2: the team to come out ahead. And I just feel
- 13:04Speaker 2: like I don't think the Dallas Stars can pull this off.
- 13:07Speaker 2: I don't think Pete Debora unless it goes to Game seven,
- 13:09Speaker 2: which he is a magician in GAVE seven. I just
- 13:12Speaker 2: think this is kind of the time for the Colorado Avalanche.
- 13:14Speaker 2: There's so much, so many good storylines. Nathan McKinnon's gonna
- 13:18Speaker 2: be healthy, Cale mccarr is gonna be healthy. The resurgence, Yeah,
- 13:22Speaker 2: we'll call it the resurgence of Marty Nachiz. Then you
- 13:25Speaker 2: got Valon the Shushkin's gonna be here for a full
- 13:27Speaker 2: playoff front. Look the fuck out Dallas Stars, and I
- 13:30Speaker 2: think they getting I just don't know they're not healthy enough.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Mira Heiskin's got to come back and be herculean.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Yeah, And now you're right. It went from like a
- 13:40Speaker 1: month gonna be like, oh my god, heavyweight matchup it
- 13:42Speaker 1: could see stars and seven abs and seven five star
- 13:46Speaker 1: stars to this thing around here like the ad Lite's
- 13:49Speaker 1: look like a runaway freight tran and Dallas is not
- 13:51Speaker 1: running into form can playoff time. So I think I
- 13:53Speaker 1: go six or seven I do. I agree with that
- 13:55Speaker 1: the Avalanche is gonna win this series. Now, Lightning Panthers Florida,
- 13:58Speaker 1: when two of the three matchups this season entering the
- 14:00Speaker 1: game twos and Tampa Bay has to be the favorite,
- 14:02Speaker 1: though in some ways against the defending champions, they look
- 14:05Speaker 1: like a jugging out. The past few weeks, the Panthers
- 14:07Speaker 1: haven't been healthy, as you and I have talked about,
- 14:08Speaker 1: maybe play a little bit of ropodope, haven't used their
- 14:10Speaker 1: full lineup, Aaron Akbla still serving his suspension, Matthew could
- 14:13Speaker 1: Chuck hasn't played since February eighth. It's so tough Jad
- 14:17Speaker 1: to make the Stanley Cup final three straight years, and
- 14:19Speaker 1: I love Palm reest On pulling for them. I'm gonna
- 14:22Speaker 1: call the Panthers to win this series, but on paper,
- 14:24Speaker 1: I feel like I should go lightning you.
- 14:27Speaker 2: I just think that decor and Vassilevsky on Tampa Bay
- 14:31Speaker 2: is going to be too much. I think they're really
- 14:33Speaker 2: going to do a good job. You know, they made
- 14:35Speaker 2: a lot of solid pickups, springing guys in Ryan McDonough
- 14:37Speaker 2: leading the league and plus minus and rightfully so, he
- 14:41Speaker 2: is just the eliminator of all things, you know, defensive plays, breakouts.
- 14:46Speaker 2: He's been so good for this team. JJ mosers but
- 14:49Speaker 2: was hurt a little bit this year, but he's underrated.
- 14:51Speaker 2: Pick up Victor Headman. Then you have Andre Vasilevski in
- 14:54Speaker 2: the back, and you know we're not talking about I
- 14:56Speaker 2: think I think this team is healthy. Finally, I think
- 15:00Speaker 2: they have some depth. Obviously, I think they're fourth nine
- 15:03Speaker 2: is a little bit light, but those top nine forwards
- 15:06Speaker 2: are just fantastical, and I think They're gonna really give
- 15:09Speaker 2: some problems to the Florida Panthers. Now the Florida Panthers
- 15:13Speaker 2: with Brad Marsha, Seth Jones, Aaron Eckbod's coming back. I
- 15:16Speaker 2: think after game one, correct he's missing the first game
- 15:18Speaker 2: of the first game of the playoffs, that's gonna be
- 15:20Speaker 2: interesting game one. If they can hold on Florida, they
- 15:23Speaker 2: can make it an interesting series. I think Aaron Neckbid
- 15:26Speaker 2: is a way bigger piece than people think. I know
- 15:29Speaker 2: people are hard on him as a player, but I
- 15:30Speaker 2: think he just bounces out that decoor. So if he
- 15:33Speaker 2: can come in and be healthy, if Kachuk's fully healthy,
- 15:36Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, they've I think they have a chance,
- 15:38Speaker 2: but it's it's gonna be tough, and I think they're
- 15:40Speaker 2: gonna have to rely on a lot of their depth
- 15:42Speaker 2: pieces in Florida. But I just feel like Tampa Bay,
- 15:44Speaker 2: they got something going on right now, and and kut
- 15:47Speaker 2: ROV's pissed off. He's gonna get robbed of the heart again,
- 15:49Speaker 2: and I think he's gonna go and just shove it
- 15:50Speaker 2: up everybody's tushy.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Oh Chase, Now the revenge to revenge too, I love it.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Jason newars is all over. After game two, you'll see
- 15:59Speaker 1: x plaed back. I don't like the passing reference of
- 16:01Speaker 1: plus minus in today's era of analytics. A lot of
- 16:04Speaker 1: guys discount plus minus like it's kind of an overrat
- 16:06Speaker 1: It doesn't mean much. McDonald leading a plus minus. That's
- 16:08Speaker 1: a good nugget by you. Yeah forty four, says Battle
- 16:13Speaker 1: of Ontario, first time since so forth. This is gonna
- 16:15Speaker 1: be unbelievable. Ottawa swept the season series three games to none.
- 16:19Speaker 1: They're looking to play upstart first playoff appearance for the
- 16:21Speaker 1: Sins in eight years. Leaves have looked formidable, looking to
- 16:23Speaker 1: get out of the second round for the first time
- 16:26Speaker 1: since two thousand and two. Of course they did win
- 16:28Speaker 1: around the stretch was they had won around since two
- 16:30Speaker 1: thousand and four, but they said they won a round
- 16:31Speaker 1: over that stretch. But I feel like oster GEDI kind
- 16:34Speaker 1: of your point with the Kings, like, if they don't
- 16:36Speaker 1: beat the others this year, dude, Fourth Street ear must
- 16:38Speaker 1: just pack up shop like Luke Robertie. It's been fun.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Similarly for the Leafs. If you can't beat the Sentators
- 16:44Speaker 1: and you can't get of the first round. Brendan Shanahan
- 16:46Speaker 1: lates like it's if ever there's a time you got
- 16:49Speaker 1: Burubi here. I love Chief. The defense feels beefed up.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Still not timered percent soul in still Art's wool, but hey,
- 16:55Speaker 1: Martyr's in a great year, Tavera is reborn, Matthews has
- 16:57Speaker 1: done Oh if you don't beat the Senators, Buddy say, y.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Yeah, this is this is it of them. But man,
- 17:05Speaker 2: this is not an easy draw. Like correct, listen, everybody's like,
- 17:08Speaker 2: you know, Toronto, you gotta get away from the Florida's.
- 17:11Speaker 2: I mean the Ottawa Senators are a team that are
- 17:14Speaker 2: on a mission. And Brady Kuchuk who has just been
- 17:17Speaker 2: resting so we could run around trying to kill people.
- 17:20Speaker 2: I just I don't know. That was probably my toughest
- 17:24Speaker 2: series to gauge. It's gonna go seven. I don't know
- 17:28Speaker 2: where I'm leaning yet because there's a few things I
- 17:31Speaker 2: look at. I think, goaltending. If Olmark is.
- 17:34Speaker 1: On and seven say it now cents and seven omar.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Mark, I Paul Mark is on, They're in trouble, I think.
- 17:39Speaker 2: But you look on the other side, Wall and Stolars
- 17:42Speaker 2: has been a really good one two touch on the
- 17:44Speaker 2: back end. Then I look who's got the back end advantage.
- 17:47Speaker 2: You got Jake Sanderson, You've got Thomas Schabbad who's playing
- 17:50Speaker 2: some good hockey. I think the leaves are a little
- 17:53Speaker 2: bit deeper and a little bit bigger on the back end.
- 17:55Speaker 2: But then you look up front, man, they got some
- 17:57Speaker 2: depth pieces that are playing really good. It's gonna come
- 18:00Speaker 2: down to the third and fourth lines. I think for
- 18:01Speaker 2: the Ottawa centers, can they be a effective and can
- 18:05Speaker 2: they disrupt enough and score some goals. So it's going
- 18:08Speaker 2: to be kind of that battle in the trenches is
- 18:10Speaker 2: where it's going to be fought. But I think it's
- 18:11Speaker 2: this is going to be a great series. I mean
- 18:14Speaker 2: the Mausoleum, that is, the Canadian Entire Center is going
- 18:17Speaker 2: to be rocking. The people going to say the lower bowl,
- 18:21Speaker 2: oh no, yeah, well no, it's the battle of the
- 18:25Speaker 2: museums right now.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Is the is the that's the headline night of the museum.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Ben Stillertia Bank, Scotia Scotia Bank.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I see, I don't even I hate them. They always
- 18:37Speaker 2: change these core team was better. Well the Scotia Bank
- 18:42Speaker 2: and Canadian Tire Center just two museums out there battling
- 18:46Speaker 2: it out for who could be the quietest dur in
- 18:47Speaker 2: the playoff series. So at least we The good thing
- 18:50Speaker 2: is you'll get all the Ottawa fans buying the Toronto
- 18:52Speaker 2: tickets and all the Toronto fans buying the Autawa tickets.
- 18:54Speaker 2: It will be home and home. But I think it's
- 18:57Speaker 2: gonna be It's great to see the Ottawa centers back
- 18:59Speaker 2: in the playoffs. Big fan of this team. You know,
- 19:02Speaker 2: we all were kind of rooting for him this season.
- 19:04Speaker 2: We wanted to see some new blood and you know
- 19:06Speaker 2: it's see Brady could chuck in the playoffs. Oh, I mean,
- 19:09Speaker 2: it would have been nice to see him against Matthew
- 19:11Speaker 2: in the first round, see how that played out. But
- 19:13Speaker 2: this is gonna be fully full. Brady could chuck unleash.
- 19:18Speaker 1: I agree, man, He's one of the breakout stars this year,
- 19:20Speaker 1: the way he played for four nations, especially here in
- 19:22Speaker 1: the USA.
- 19:22Speaker 5: Tell give me something, sens and seven let's go. I mean,
- 19:26Speaker 5: I think Leaves take this series. But I think it's
- 19:28Speaker 5: gonna be fun. It's gonna be fun. These teams are
- 19:30Speaker 5: gonna they're gonna.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Grind it out.
- 19:33Speaker 5: You know, we're gonna have Chris Neil and Darcy Tucker
- 19:36Speaker 5: touching each other in the face as an underg good reference.
- 19:40Speaker 5: I mean, but that's what everyone's gonna be talking about
- 19:42Speaker 5: about some of these awesome playoff series they had in
- 19:45Speaker 5: the past. Now, granted, the Leafs have the upper hand
- 19:48Speaker 5: and all those series eighty years ago whenever it was,
- 19:52Speaker 5: But I think it'll be fun. I think Kannada will
- 19:55Speaker 5: feel a bit like a Leaf's home game. That's my
- 19:59Speaker 5: only concern. I mean, that's how many how many Leafs
- 20:02Speaker 5: fans are gonna be coming out to those Sens home games,
- 20:05Speaker 5: not a series, so they're not going to really have
- 20:08Speaker 5: much of an advantage at home, and I think that's
- 20:10Speaker 5: gonna really play into the you know, the advantage.
- 20:13Speaker 2: For the Leafs.
- 20:13Speaker 5: On top of the fact that who on the Senators
- 20:16Speaker 5: has won a playoff series in their career? Anyone or
- 20:19Speaker 5: even played in the playoffs for the who the center
- 20:22Speaker 5: the center? How many guys at playff experience Who's played for?
- 20:24Speaker 5: Who's played in the playoffs or at least won a series.
- 20:27Speaker 2: David Pan has a coup Nick else Nick Cousins as.
- 20:34Speaker 1: A cup kissing Cousins.
- 20:35Speaker 2: This is what it comes to, kissing Nick Cousins. They
- 20:37Speaker 2: got some depth guys that have have some juice and
- 20:40Speaker 2: and no I I but I mean if you look
- 20:43Speaker 2: towards Toronto, it's much of the same couple guys. It's
- 20:46Speaker 2: two teams battling for playoff dominance. But you know that
- 20:50Speaker 2: brings him a point. I wish teams, especially like Ottawa.
- 20:54Speaker 2: I don't know what they're gonna do, but if they
- 20:55Speaker 2: would limit ticket sales to you have to live within
- 20:59Speaker 2: the city, because I don't love obviously, I like fans
- 21:03Speaker 2: that can't otherwise afford playoff tickets because Toronto just absolutely
- 21:07Speaker 2: gouges people to be able to go watch it somewhere.
- 21:10Speaker 2: Like I wish they would just keep it within the city.
- 21:12Speaker 2: I know people are re selling their tickets making a
- 21:14Speaker 2: quick buck. I mean, good for you, get your paper booboo.
- 21:17Speaker 2: But I just think they should team should limit you
- 21:19Speaker 2: have to live in the city or you at least
- 21:22Speaker 2: can't be a Leafs fan and go, because it just
- 21:25Speaker 2: takes away from it a little bit. I feel like, but.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I mean if that crowd in Ottawa starts
- 21:30Speaker 1: chanting go, leaves go, and then the first one to go,
- 21:32Speaker 1: this sucks, Like what are we doing in Canada?
- 21:34Speaker 2: Yeah, burn the stadium near the ground. That happens all.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Right, coming up next year an NHL and script, We'll
- 21:40Speaker 1: talk to our friend Mike Rupp, that's right, Stanley Cup
- 21:42Speaker 1: champion back of the New Jersey Devils. He'll tell us
- 21:44Speaker 1: about chirping Jody Shelley, also the Yager salut in front
- 21:46Speaker 1: of Flyers fans, and what he's enjoyed most for this
- 21:49Speaker 1: NHL season. That's coming up after this break. Our next guest.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Drafted in the third round of the two thousand NHL
- 22:06Speaker 1: Draft by the New Jersey Devils, with whom he scored
- 22:08Speaker 1: the Cup clinching goal in two thousand and three. Before
- 22:11Speaker 1: hoisting the Stanley Cup, you would go on to also
- 22:13Speaker 1: play for the Fittest Coyotes, Columbus Bluejackets, Pittsburgh Penguins, New
- 22:17Speaker 1: York Rangers, and Minnesota Wild and now can be seen
- 22:19Speaker 1: him breaking down the game on NHL Network and Sports
- 22:22Speaker 1: at Pittsburgh. He's one of our favorites, a teammate, a friend,
- 22:25Speaker 1: a colleague. Mike Rupp, Ropper, how do we do a
- 22:27Speaker 1: big man?
- 22:28Speaker 4: Hey, I love you guys, I'm glad to get on
- 22:30Speaker 4: here with you guys. But Adnan, dude, I was drafted
- 22:33Speaker 4: in the first round. I know I went back in
- 22:35Speaker 4: the draft and got drafted the third round, but you
- 22:38Speaker 4: gonna strip that for me, so I was never drafted
- 22:40Speaker 4: in the first round. I don't even get that acknowledgement anymore.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Remember one time I gave you extra props on air.
- 22:44Speaker 1: I said to you, like, didn't you score two goals?
- 22:47Speaker 1: And hopefully you go, No, you go. You know you're
- 22:49Speaker 1: not the only one that thinks that. I it was
- 22:51Speaker 1: so rare.
- 22:53Speaker 4: That's fair. I know you, I know you're I know
- 22:54Speaker 4: you're a good teammates. So I'll let that one go.
- 22:56Speaker 2: He doesn't do his research, Adnan, No, exactly.
- 23:00Speaker 1: You're grinding right now, Ruppers. We're getting towards the end
- 23:02Speaker 1: of the season. But I think this is an amazing
- 23:04Speaker 1: final stretch of the playoffs right around the corner. Is
- 23:07Speaker 1: there something that you're most excited about we were talking earlier.
- 23:09Speaker 1: I mean that the fact that Habs are going to
- 23:10Speaker 1: make the playoffs is unbelievable. There's been some great races.
- 23:12Speaker 1: What is it for you?
- 23:14Speaker 4: Oh man, there's so many. I think the Ottawa Senators
- 23:18Speaker 4: I've been I've been kind of on that train for
- 23:20Speaker 4: a couple of years. Now and I've gotten burnt every
- 23:22Speaker 4: single time. So I love the fact that we're getting
- 23:26Speaker 4: getting to the point now where this team. Man, they
- 23:29Speaker 4: they they kept it going. They didn't have that big
- 23:32Speaker 4: drop off. They found ways to push back when they
- 23:36Speaker 4: when they would lose some games. And I'm excited because
- 23:38Speaker 4: I think, I think this is a better league when
- 23:41Speaker 4: you're gonna have a guy like Brady could Chuck in
- 23:42Speaker 4: the playoffs, and I can't wait to see what he brings.
- 23:44Speaker 4: But Oddoy is probably the one storyline that I'm It
- 23:47Speaker 4: probably intrigues me the most. But you mentioned Montreal, man,
- 23:50Speaker 4: I mean, are you kidding me? I never ever, ever,
- 23:52Speaker 4: ever would have thought that they were gonna make it
- 23:54Speaker 4: this year.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Alexandro Vetchkin. Obviously, it's been an incredible story Ruppery has
- 23:58Speaker 1: been able to do with a great chase. You had
- 23:59Speaker 1: some spirited matchups one on one against him, right, What
- 24:01Speaker 1: was it like facing ov?
- 24:03Speaker 4: Oh man? Oh Ovi? Was? I remember one time and
- 24:06Speaker 4: it only was one time that I got out there
- 24:09Speaker 4: on the PK against him, and all I was thinking
- 24:11Speaker 4: to myself is we all know and that's what makes
- 24:14Speaker 4: Ovi great? And I think of I'm a big Michael
- 24:16Speaker 4: Jordan guy. That's what made MJ great. Everybody in the building,
- 24:19Speaker 4: everybody in the world knew who's getting the last shot,
- 24:21Speaker 4: and he would still He's still bury it right. That
- 24:24Speaker 4: to me, that's greatness. Ovi's on the ice, you know
- 24:27Speaker 4: in situations, who they're looking for, what they're going to do.
- 24:30Speaker 4: I mean, he's getting that shot from that era of
- 24:33Speaker 4: the ice and he could stare down in the whites
- 24:34Speaker 4: of the eyes of a goaltender and blow the puck
- 24:36Speaker 4: past him. That is greatness anyway. So I'm out there
- 24:39Speaker 4: on the penalty kill and I'm thinking to myself, Man,
- 24:42Speaker 4: all I know is Ovi's not scoring on this one,
- 24:44Speaker 4: all right. I cheated so much over to Ovi to
- 24:47Speaker 4: take away that one tiber that I left the guy
- 24:49Speaker 4: right open in the slot, just wired one bar down.
- 24:53Speaker 4: Never saw the PK again out there. But I like, hey,
- 24:55Speaker 4: Obi didn't score. That was the starter report watching out
- 24:58Speaker 4: for a Betchkin over there. He didn't get it.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I love the fact you were not gonna let a
- 25:02Speaker 1: Betsan scored that goal. Specific memories for your upper twenty
- 25:05Speaker 1: twelve Winter class. You're playing for the Rangers against the Flyers.
- 25:08Speaker 1: You score a goal and then give a little yarmier
- 25:10Speaker 1: yoger styles salute, which leaves plenty of fans from the
- 25:13Speaker 1: Flyers being upset with you do Flyers fans still give
- 25:16Speaker 1: you a heart time about them. Does that get brought up?
- 25:18Speaker 4: Yeah, that the yog salute? Yeah, Philly was not happy
- 25:22Speaker 4: about that. Yeah. I don't know. I mean I still
- 25:25Speaker 4: hear things from time to time, but you know, I
- 25:28Speaker 4: think it was more like I grew up in I
- 25:31Speaker 4: pretty much played for every team and what is today's
- 25:33Speaker 4: Metro Division except the Flyers, and so it was like
- 25:39Speaker 4: embedded in me to hate the Flyers, And so I
- 25:42Speaker 4: always look at in some of my greatest memories. I
- 25:45Speaker 4: loved playing in Philly. It was a tough place to play,
- 25:48Speaker 4: it was an intimidating place to play, but I thought
- 25:51Speaker 4: that those environments were always something for a guy like
- 25:54Speaker 4: my size and the way I had to play would
- 25:56Speaker 4: would help me. And so that was one just kind
- 25:59Speaker 4: of throw some fuel on the fire, and that's kind
- 26:02Speaker 4: of my job, so I try to do it that day.
- 26:04Speaker 2: What do you attribute the habs run to to this,
- 26:07Speaker 2: you know, kind of Cinderella story a little bit, and
- 26:10Speaker 2: you look at their team and is it one thing
- 26:12Speaker 2: or is it kind of you know, what have you
- 26:15Speaker 2: kind of attributed the whole run to.
- 26:18Speaker 4: It's funny because I don't know, like there's not it's
- 26:23Speaker 4: it's it's tough because I don't know if there is
- 26:25Speaker 4: one thing JD. They they have the it factor and
- 26:28Speaker 4: whatever that means, Like you look at some of the
- 26:30Speaker 4: games down the stretcher, they find ways to win. Yeah,
- 26:33Speaker 4: and I don't know if you can quantify that saying oh, well,
- 26:35Speaker 4: they're a good for checking team. They do X, Y
- 26:38Speaker 4: and Z, like they find ways to win and you know,
- 26:41Speaker 4: is as good as anybody in the NHL. Like that's
- 26:44Speaker 4: something and then that's value. And they're finding ways to
- 26:47Speaker 4: close out games. I'll say a couple of things. They
- 26:49Speaker 4: got some guys who can put the puck in the net.
- 26:51Speaker 4: We know this, but I also think not just not
- 26:54Speaker 4: even not even just Laane Hudson, like they Marty Saint
- 26:57Speaker 4: Louis and this this coaching staff, they all these guys
- 27:00Speaker 4: got the green light. I was breaking down some clip
- 27:03Speaker 4: a couple of weeks ago, and it's like, dude, I'm
- 27:05Speaker 4: seeing some guys like I'm seeing Arba Jai, I'm seeing
- 27:08Speaker 4: David Tavard, like these guys. These guys got the green
- 27:11Speaker 4: light to go all the time and they're allowed to
- 27:13Speaker 4: hang in there. So I think this is a team
- 27:15Speaker 4: that they can put the puck in the net at times.
- 27:17Speaker 4: And I think it's because the defenseman that they're allowed
- 27:20Speaker 4: to go, and you don't have to be just an
- 27:21Speaker 4: offensive minded guy if it's the right opportunity, the right
- 27:24Speaker 4: time of the game, go And as a forward, I
- 27:26Speaker 4: love that. So now I can get some help in
- 27:28Speaker 4: the offensive zone from a defenseman jumping in. I mean
- 27:31Speaker 4: that that's been something I thought that they do pretty well.
- 27:34Speaker 2: A team that needs all the help in the world,
- 27:36Speaker 2: and you put a glorious tweet out about the New
- 27:40Speaker 2: York Rangers and a team that's finding ways to lose.
- 27:45Speaker 2: I mean, what can you attribute this season too, especially
- 27:48Speaker 2: how they've let down Ego Schusterkin mainly.
- 27:52Speaker 4: Yeah, man, it goes back. Oh my gosh, this is
- 27:56Speaker 4: so much unpack here. I feel like because this story
- 27:59Speaker 4: was back in the summer, and I hate to always
- 28:01Speaker 4: go back there, whether it was you go back to
- 28:04Speaker 4: the bar, the good Row that Jacob Truba. I mean,
- 28:05Speaker 4: the season kind of started off not in the best way.
- 28:09Speaker 4: I mean, you're coming off of President's Trophy season, you
- 28:12Speaker 4: would expect there to be a little more excitement. It
- 28:14Speaker 4: seemed like the cloud was kind of over this franchise
- 28:16Speaker 4: before the season started. You got this Just Shirkin contract
- 28:21Speaker 4: that was something there too, and then you get into
- 28:25Speaker 4: the season and I just find that this is a
- 28:27Speaker 4: team that they even when they won the President's Trophy
- 28:30Speaker 4: last year, they they didn't There's a lot of details
- 28:33Speaker 4: in their game that they weren't great, and most of
- 28:35Speaker 4: them are defensively and they don't have a lot of pushback.
- 28:38Speaker 4: They don't have a lot of lightning Rod type guys,
- 28:40Speaker 4: alpha guys, alpha dogs they should say, in their roster.
- 28:45Speaker 4: And I think all those things were evident this year.
- 28:47Speaker 4: And I think the biggest thing for me, it's like,
- 28:51Speaker 4: I don't know at what point I don't think there's
- 28:54Speaker 4: accountability there. There's just so many things, man Like. I
- 28:58Speaker 4: just find that this is a team that kind of
- 29:00Speaker 4: goes out there. They know they have a great goaltender
- 29:03Speaker 4: and they hope that they get score more goals than
- 29:05Speaker 4: the opponent. As dumb as that sounds like, that, that's
- 29:07Speaker 4: the way I see their games. And I kind of
- 29:10Speaker 4: made this analogy yesterday and I want to go back
- 29:12Speaker 4: to it because growing up in the Devil's organization, like
- 29:16Speaker 4: we had Marty and I think Marty Berdoor is the
- 29:17Speaker 4: best goalie to ever play the game. And some people
- 29:20Speaker 4: might have others, and that's fine, but you know a
- 29:23Speaker 4: lot of people say, well, Marty wasn't that great because
- 29:26Speaker 4: he had Scotti Stevens, Scott Neiedermayer, you had all these
- 29:28Speaker 4: guys playing in front of him. Like I mean, I'd
- 29:31Speaker 4: pump the brakes on that a little bit. Both things
- 29:33Speaker 4: worked hand in hand. But I do know for being
- 29:36Speaker 4: in that franchise and talking to Scotty Stevens on the
- 29:39Speaker 4: NHL Network side of things, the details talk to Ken
- 29:41Speaker 4: Danigo about it, that the details in that franchise, Larry
- 29:45Speaker 4: Robinson instilled it. You can go back to, you know,
- 29:49Speaker 4: the other Jacques Lamaire, I mean, the details. So your
- 29:53Speaker 4: strongest attribute was your goaltender. Man, We had a million
- 29:57Speaker 4: insurance policies on our goaltender because we defended in front
- 30:00Speaker 4: of them. You weren't getting a second chance opportunity against
- 30:02Speaker 4: the Devils. If here's a shot on net, we have
- 30:05Speaker 4: the best goal in the world, he's going to make
- 30:06Speaker 4: that safe. Guess what there's no shot too, because Scottie
- 30:08Speaker 4: Stevens is putting you on your rear end, Ken Dannago
- 30:11Speaker 4: is getting you under your hands, getting your stick up
- 30:12Speaker 4: in the air. You know it's Scott Edermeyers doing the same.
- 30:15Speaker 4: So that that's where that was at. And on the
- 30:19Speaker 4: flip side, you got the New York Rangers where it's
- 30:21Speaker 4: like Igor's got to make save one, save two, save three.
- 30:26Speaker 4: There's nobody getting putting on the rear put on the
- 30:28Speaker 4: rear end in front of the net. There's no sticks
- 30:30Speaker 4: getting lifted in the air. I mean, JD, you'd have
- 30:32Speaker 4: a field day breaking down some of that stuff with
- 30:35Speaker 4: the Rangers. Yeah, that's towards that to me. And so
- 30:38Speaker 4: you can say whatever you want. At the end of
- 30:40Speaker 4: the day, we're players. I'll stick out for players. Players
- 30:44Speaker 4: wear a lot of this. But there's also accountability. If
- 30:47Speaker 4: the players aren't getting it done, sit there s that
- 30:50Speaker 4: hasn't happened this year. You keep rolling it out there
- 30:52Speaker 4: and expect a different different I guess results and that
- 30:56Speaker 4: it just simply hasn't happened.
- 30:59Speaker 2: So another hot button topic issue between me and yourself
- 31:02Speaker 2: was today. And you know it's great when you get material.
- 31:07Speaker 2: That's just you know, you a lot of times in
- 31:09Speaker 2: this podcast world, and you know this rapper, you got
- 31:11Speaker 2: to like come up with stuff and but sometimes things
- 31:13Speaker 2: fall in your lap. And our battle between me you
- 31:17Speaker 2: and talking about Gabriel Landeskog, you know my my point
- 31:22Speaker 2: of view is I think, no matter what, a good
- 31:23Speaker 2: player will find a way. You know, two years, three years,
- 31:25Speaker 2: they'll find a way to be good. But you know
- 31:28Speaker 2: you kind of a little bit more skeptical and you
- 31:30Speaker 2: want them to be there. But you you have some
- 31:32Speaker 2: different thoughts than me, and I might have I might
- 31:35Speaker 2: have picked a little too much and poked the bear
- 31:37Speaker 2: too much. Day I was scared for my life for
- 31:38Speaker 2: a second.
- 31:39Speaker 4: Hey, I I will say, man, just to let you
- 31:42Speaker 4: in on the full transparency of the conversation, I did say, JD,
- 31:46Speaker 4: I'm going to kill you is what I said.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Even left the voice text. It won't put his voice,
- 31:51Speaker 1: not a text voice.
- 31:53Speaker 4: But j D, j D, you knew how to push ones.
- 31:56Speaker 4: But I love you, JD. I'm just messing. I might
- 31:58Speaker 4: check into the wall at the network, but so no,
- 32:02Speaker 4: I think here's the thing here, and I want to
- 32:03Speaker 4: make this very very very clear, So please don't chop
- 32:05Speaker 4: this up when you're putting things out there later on
- 32:08Speaker 4: and lead this out. I want to see one of
- 32:11Speaker 4: the greatest comeback stories ever. And I don't mean to
- 32:15Speaker 4: blow that up. I mean it's just for no one's
- 32:18Speaker 4: gone through what Gabe Landeskog is going through. I want
- 32:21Speaker 4: nothing more than seeing this guy hoist the cup. He's
- 32:23Speaker 4: one of my favorites because he's a throwback. He's old school,
- 32:26Speaker 4: and I think that's a dying breed and I love him.
- 32:29Speaker 4: I just think that with the time he's missed and
- 32:32Speaker 4: just from my experiences with seeing players that have certain injuries,
- 32:36Speaker 4: like I'm very curious how it's going to take. And yes,
- 32:41Speaker 4: having him in there, I mean I just to have
- 32:44Speaker 4: him on the bench is a huge boost for this
- 32:46Speaker 4: team and I think that's enormous and having them around.
- 32:51Speaker 4: But I also I'm skeptical because I've been in a
- 32:55Speaker 4: similar situation in some regards at the end of my career,
- 32:58Speaker 4: where you fight and you're out so long and you
- 33:01Speaker 4: battle to get back, and that's that's the biggest hurdle
- 33:05Speaker 4: at the time you get back, but it's how you
- 33:08Speaker 4: feel the next day. And then for me, it took
- 33:11Speaker 4: me two weeks after my one day of being back
- 33:14Speaker 4: to get back to where I was before my first
- 33:17Speaker 4: game back, you know what I mean. So that's where
- 33:19Speaker 4: it becomes a slippery slope. Like my biggest concern is
- 33:23Speaker 4: after missing this much time to get ready for this moment,
- 33:26Speaker 4: is he gonna be able to play in forty eight
- 33:28Speaker 4: hours in the Stanley Cup playoffs again? You know what
- 33:30Speaker 4: I mean?
- 33:30Speaker 2: So every time, but yeah, but you got to imagine
- 33:33Speaker 2: he's going to be in a bottom six role and
- 33:36Speaker 2: then in that well.
- 33:36Speaker 4: You're still but JD, you're still leaving everything out there. Man.
- 33:39Speaker 4: Like I was a career I could barely walk in
- 33:42Speaker 4: the playoffs out.
- 33:43Speaker 2: There, but that bottom six role has kind of been
- 33:46Speaker 2: like a merry go around a little bit for Colorado.
- 33:48Speaker 2: So they might pull him in for game one, sit
- 33:50Speaker 2: him out for game two.
- 33:52Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what I mean.
- 33:53Speaker 2: I think I feel like the coaching staff to your point,
- 33:56Speaker 2: I agree with you on a lot of points, like
- 33:58Speaker 2: how effective is he going to be? Like can he recover?
- 34:00Speaker 2: But can the coaching staff, which I think is very
- 34:04Speaker 2: underrated in terms of their level, their aptitude and how
- 34:07Speaker 2: smart they are. Jared Bedner and this coaching staff to
- 34:10Speaker 2: not recognize that and kind of plug and play a bit.
- 34:12Speaker 2: I don't know if that's more.
- 34:13Speaker 4: Of a possibility, but yeah, and I mean, man, I
- 34:16Speaker 4: hope I'm dead wrong. I just think that what the
- 34:20Speaker 4: demanding part of the NHL Playoffs and the way the
- 34:23Speaker 4: game plays like, if Gabe's even in that bottom six,
- 34:25Speaker 4: so what are some of the attributes you're gonna have
- 34:27Speaker 4: to bring. You're gonna have to get on your horse
- 34:28Speaker 4: in the fore check. You have to get in there,
- 34:30Speaker 4: get hit, be hit. Can he handle that? I hope
- 34:32Speaker 4: to god he can. I want to see this happen.
- 34:35Speaker 4: I just think I just think anything. I don't have
- 34:37Speaker 4: any expectations in it, and I don't want anybody to
- 34:40Speaker 4: have expectations. I think that puts pressure on Gabe, and
- 34:42Speaker 4: I think we've seen it. It's been documented. I think
- 34:45Speaker 4: Gabe puts enough pressure on himself. So just let him
- 34:47Speaker 4: see how this works out. If he gets back in
- 34:50Speaker 4: there and he's able to be a part of it, man,
- 34:51Speaker 4: it's a huge boost for Colorado. But I'm not really
- 34:55Speaker 4: banking on that happen.
- 34:56Speaker 2: I don't know if I can bet against you. I've
- 34:57Speaker 2: lost two bottles of camist to already oh for.
- 35:00Speaker 4: Twothing wrong on this one, though, I hope I'm wrong
- 35:05Speaker 4: on this one.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Well, one thing you were definitely right about is fighting
- 35:07Speaker 1: back of the day, Rupper. You were a heavyweight during
- 35:09Speaker 1: a great era of Jay rose Hill, Sean Thornton, George
- 35:12Speaker 1: Parrows is a very smart guy. And our buddy Jody Shelley, who,
- 35:15Speaker 1: as you know, I work with on Amazon of course
- 35:17Speaker 1: NHL network as well. There's a clip it says on
- 35:19Speaker 1: YouTube Mike Rupp calls Jody Shelley irrelevant. Talk to me
- 35:22Speaker 1: twenty ten you and Jody going ahead to head.
- 35:25Speaker 4: I hate did that clip made it out there?
- 35:27Speaker 1: Man? I do? I do?
- 35:29Speaker 4: You know I too, because I was coaching my son
- 35:31Speaker 4: when I got done playing all these all these little
- 35:33Speaker 4: punk teenagers are playing in the locker room too. I'm like,
- 35:35Speaker 4: would you shut your phone off like it was your phone?
- 35:38Speaker 4: You know what I mean? They're playing this clip. So
- 35:40Speaker 4: let me give you a little backstory because I played
- 35:42Speaker 4: with Jody and Columbus, and you guys know Jody, well Jody.
- 35:46Speaker 4: I was on line with Jody. He's one of the
- 35:48Speaker 4: greatest teammates I played with in the NHL. I love Jody.
- 35:52Speaker 4: It was the battle of the Rangers and the Flyers,
- 35:55Speaker 4: and in the heat of the moment, you do what
- 35:59Speaker 4: you things come out right, and I now did I
- 36:03Speaker 4: know so the full train experiency get of that. I
- 36:05Speaker 4: knew I was Might, I was Mike. Okay that Mike
- 36:08Speaker 4: was on me, and so I Mike. During this HBO
- 36:12Speaker 4: is covering the Road to the Winter Classic, this scrumb happens.
- 36:15Speaker 4: I'm going after I'm going after Tom Cistido and I'm
- 36:19Speaker 4: trying to fight him and Jody comes over and shoves me.
- 36:22Speaker 4: He's like, why are you going after the twenty two
- 36:24Speaker 4: year old? I'm basically because he's act like an idiot.
- 36:26Speaker 4: Jody's like, you know, asking me to fight, and so
- 36:29Speaker 4: I'm not thinking about being miked in that moment. I
- 36:32Speaker 4: say that. Postgame, I go up to our PR department
- 36:35Speaker 4: and I say, hey, I need to talk to we
- 36:38Speaker 4: need to talk to the HBO guys. I want that cut.
- 36:40Speaker 4: And so they go, all right, we'll talk to him,
- 36:43Speaker 4: we'll see and the HBO guys were like, well, let's
- 36:45Speaker 4: see what you're talking about. And they came back and
- 36:47Speaker 4: they said, we can't cut that, and I'm like, come on,
- 36:50Speaker 4: and they're go, we we need to leave that in.
- 36:54Speaker 4: So they left it in and so it's kind of
- 36:56Speaker 4: gotten this thing. And I feel bad because, like, you know,
- 36:58Speaker 4: Joey's a great dude. I've worked with them and whatever.
- 37:01Speaker 4: But I mean, I think Jody understands in the heat
- 37:03Speaker 4: of the moment. But yeah, man, that thing made its rounds.
- 37:05Speaker 4: And I hear that all the time.
- 37:08Speaker 1: As you said, it's so frustrated too, like your kid
- 37:11Speaker 1: and his tea. Weik's looking up, like, but put your
- 37:12Speaker 1: phone away, okay. Like I love Jon, He's a great dude.
- 37:14Speaker 1: It just came out. We've talked before with the Netflix
- 37:18Speaker 1: dock on the Danbury Trashers. I'm unbelievable. I mean that
- 37:20Speaker 1: people on Netflix love that. Your favorite story reminiscing about that?
- 37:25Speaker 4: Oh man, there's so many. My favorite story about the
- 37:28Speaker 4: Danbury Trashers was, I guess the best way of I
- 37:32Speaker 4: know some people explained it this way. It was basically
- 37:35Speaker 4: slap shot marrying the sopranos. I remember. I remember, so
- 37:40Speaker 4: I had to play ten regular season games to qualify
- 37:43Speaker 4: for the playoff roster. So I tried to. I played
- 37:46Speaker 4: every other weekend I played in. My former junior team
- 37:50Speaker 4: was Erie of the Ontario Hockey League. So I was
- 37:52Speaker 4: playing an Aria, living in an Aria, practice with the
- 37:54Speaker 4: Otters during the week. Every other weekend i'd go play
- 37:56Speaker 4: a couple of games. So I got till ten i'd
- 37:58Speaker 4: be able to play in the playoffs. So anyways, I'm
- 38:00Speaker 4: starting I'm there for a little bit. I'm starting to
- 38:02Speaker 4: see how things are kind of happening here. This is
- 38:04Speaker 4: a really tough team and to kind of seeing, oh, yeah,
- 38:08Speaker 4: this is this is a unique situation. And I remember
- 38:11Speaker 4: being on the bus and I was I was doing
- 38:14Speaker 4: a three and three in Michigan to bang out like
- 38:16Speaker 4: three games, and I was falling asleep on the bus
- 38:19Speaker 4: and I had my head against the window and right
- 38:22Speaker 4: behind me to see behind me is you guys know
- 38:24Speaker 4: John John Morasti so nasty. Marasti is a tough guy
- 38:27Speaker 4: on our team. And so what ends up happening is
- 38:33Speaker 4: Barry Melrose and Steve Levy they owned that or on
- 38:36Speaker 4: that team, and that's in the league. And Barry made
- 38:39Speaker 4: a comment to the media about Tony Soprano running the
- 38:41Speaker 4: Danburry trash as well. Our owner Jimmy Galante didn't like that,
- 38:46Speaker 4: and he said, we're gonna send a message next time
- 38:49Speaker 4: we play them that we were playing on the next weekend.
- 38:52Speaker 4: I was not scheduled to play that weekend. So I'm
- 38:55Speaker 4: sleeping against the window. Marasty's on the phone. He's making
- 38:59Speaker 4: a phone call to I think it was Chad Wagner
- 39:03Speaker 4: was his name, and he was I put this together later,
- 39:06Speaker 4: but this is the conversation. I'm here on one side too,
- 39:09Speaker 4: Hey buddy, it's me Nasty. What are you doing next weekend? Hey,
- 39:14Speaker 4: you want to come play some hockey make some money.
- 39:17Speaker 4: And I'm like, I'm like, I'm like sleeping. I'm like listen.
- 39:19Speaker 4: And he's like he's like, yeah, man, no, no, no,
- 39:22Speaker 4: I know you have no no, no, I know you haven't
- 39:24Speaker 4: played hockey in a few years. No, I know you're
- 39:27Speaker 4: not in shape. It doesn't matter, it doesn't matter. No. Literally,
- 39:30Speaker 4: he wants you to come run around like a dumb
- 39:32Speaker 4: dumb and he's going to pay you two grand to
- 39:34Speaker 4: come out and play in the game. And it's like,
- 39:37Speaker 4: all right, well do you think about it? Let me know,
- 39:38Speaker 4: blah blah blah. Hangs up and I'm like, what just happened.
- 39:42Speaker 4: So when I left that road trip, I said to
- 39:44Speaker 4: some of the boys like, go hey, boys, keep me
- 39:45Speaker 4: posted what happens, because I think something's going down. Sure enough,
- 39:49Speaker 4: this Chad Wagner. He's been expelled from multiple leagues and
- 39:53Speaker 4: the like like proons, dude, yeah go look them up. Yes,
- 39:59Speaker 4: like five and forty one penalty minutes. He's been expelled
- 40:03Speaker 4: from all these places. He came in play. Yeah, he played.
- 40:07Speaker 3: Uh.
- 40:07Speaker 4: He played one game he uh he ended up climbing
- 40:10Speaker 4: into at around X bench and pulled the coach by
- 40:14Speaker 4: his uh by his blazer and punched the coach got
- 40:17Speaker 4: expelled from the UHL. I'm like, wow, this is unbelievable.
- 40:21Speaker 4: But and there was also times where we'd just be
- 40:23Speaker 4: driving back or between games and you stop at a
- 40:26Speaker 4: truck stop and you hear the bus breaks, you know,
- 40:29Speaker 4: the doors would open. You're like waking up. You're like
- 40:32Speaker 4: what are we doing? And the lights would come on
- 40:34Speaker 4: and there'd just be some dude walk on the bus
- 40:36Speaker 4: and it'd be like Frank the Animal by A Lois.
- 40:38Speaker 4: We're just picking him up off the turn pike and
- 40:42Speaker 4: like what are we doing? I'm like, is that is
- 40:44Speaker 4: that Frank? Like is that by Frank BYO Lois? And
- 40:47Speaker 4: then like he goes playing a game and just beat
- 40:48Speaker 4: the wheels off people and then you'd stop and drop
- 40:51Speaker 4: them off at the truck stop on your way home.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Literally, Sure, I started watching Shorty. It's literally sures. Fill
- 40:57Speaker 2: him in. Fill him in right there, Rutberg. Kind of lastly,
- 41:01Speaker 2: I wanted to ask you and and you know, if
- 41:03Speaker 2: you had any interactions with Ray Schera. We just found,
- 41:06Speaker 2: you know, sad day of hockey, and you know, he
- 41:09Speaker 2: was a great man. For everything I've heard is just
- 41:11Speaker 2: incredible stuff. And some of the stories I've heard about
- 41:14Speaker 2: him taking care of guys and really looking out for players.
- 41:18Speaker 2: I don't know how close you were with him or
- 41:20Speaker 2: any good ray Shaw stories because we kind of doing
- 41:22Speaker 2: that with Johnny goodrou a little bit of you know,
- 41:25Speaker 2: gone but not forgotten.
- 41:27Speaker 4: Yeah. So I mean, obviously a legendary family in this
- 41:31Speaker 4: in the game of hockey. Ray I had him in
- 41:34Speaker 4: the GM in Pittsburgh. He brought me to Pittsburgh for
- 41:36Speaker 4: two years. You know, I had I had my best
- 41:40Speaker 4: two years of my career in Pittsburgh there, and it
- 41:44Speaker 4: was a lot of things. Is the culture that they
- 41:47Speaker 4: had there, things that they built. But I want to
- 41:50Speaker 4: say this though, and I don't want to I always
- 41:51Speaker 4: find this sometimes when you give an endorsement of someone else,
- 41:54Speaker 4: people take it as an indictment of other people. I'm
- 41:58Speaker 4: just saying, is a GM He was the most. He
- 42:03Speaker 4: was a great human. He was a family guy. The
- 42:07Speaker 4: way he went about things was different than I ever
- 42:10Speaker 4: saw at that time. It was refreshing. He was hard
- 42:14Speaker 4: and he was hard. I mean, he's a Stanley Cup
- 42:16Speaker 4: champ for a reason, the way he went about his business.
- 42:18Speaker 4: But he just he like a story of it is.
- 42:23Speaker 4: That was one of the first teams that I ever
- 42:24Speaker 4: heard of pregame skate. We'd bring our kids to the rink,
- 42:27Speaker 4: ray encourage it. He wanted them there. You know. There
- 42:29Speaker 4: was times like when we had our pregame meeting that
- 42:32Speaker 4: were watching before pregame skate. Of course the kids kind
- 42:35Speaker 4: of went in the in the weight room, we're kind
- 42:37Speaker 4: of running around, and but you brought him in there.
- 42:41Speaker 4: He wanted the kids in there. He wanted it to
- 42:43Speaker 4: be He understood what it was to be in the NHL,
- 42:45Speaker 4: and this is this is the greatest, this is all
- 42:47Speaker 4: of our dreams. Let's have fun doing it and make
- 42:50Speaker 4: your families be a part of it. I just find
- 42:52Speaker 4: that he was just an absolute class act one of
- 42:55Speaker 4: the good guys in our sport that that that ran
- 42:57Speaker 4: a tight ship, but also let you know that he
- 43:00Speaker 4: loved you and he cared about you. And that's the
- 43:02Speaker 4: biggest thing that sticks out to me. So man, I
- 43:04Speaker 4: all that today, like most people, just absolutely shocked and
- 43:08Speaker 4: very saddened.
- 43:09Speaker 1: My crop noted first round pick and a great guy
- 43:12Speaker 1: and obviously a big part.
- 43:14Speaker 4: That I didn't find I didn't. We have we have one.
- 43:16Speaker 2: We have one more for him because we said we
- 43:19Speaker 2: have to comment on the Canada flag behind him, and
- 43:21Speaker 2: we talked about it a little bit today.
- 43:23Speaker 1: Do you're such a nice guy? By the way, people
- 43:25Speaker 1: actually think he's Canadian. I have to correct them sometimes.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Yeah, well he's he's he's a sweetheart till he says
- 43:29Speaker 2: he wants to kill you. But do you think this
- 43:32Speaker 2: is the year for a Canadian team to win the Cup?
- 43:35Speaker 1: Yes?
- 43:36Speaker 4: JD. That's why I put in an audio message when
- 43:38Speaker 4: I say I want to kill you, because it's not
- 43:39Speaker 4: on paper. It's those things saved after you read it, it goes.
- 43:44Speaker 2: That's how that's how a nepture in technology. If you
- 43:47Speaker 2: click on it, you see the transcript and I screenshoted
- 43:50Speaker 2: it's a life insurance policy.
- 43:54Speaker 4: So what Canadian team?
- 43:56Speaker 2: You know, do you think a Canadian team is this
- 43:58Speaker 2: the best chance they've had in you know, the past
- 44:00Speaker 2: five ten years?
- 44:02Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, I say the best chance, probably just
- 44:05Speaker 4: because you got five more teams more teams in. But
- 44:09Speaker 4: I would not be shocked if for some reason, I
- 44:14Speaker 4: just have this thing the Leafs. There's something about them.
- 44:17Speaker 4: I could totally see the Leafs going on a run
- 44:18Speaker 4: this year. But I will also say this, I think
- 44:23Speaker 4: Ottawa has the Cinderella story stamps right on their forehead.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Let's go set, Yeah, come on, Yeah, I mean.
- 44:27Speaker 4: I don't know Winnipeg. Winnipeg scares the hell out of
- 44:31Speaker 4: me because I think they're awesome, but I don't know
- 44:34Speaker 4: what I'm gonna get. So yeah, I mean I would
- 44:36Speaker 4: say this is the best chance, probably more so in
- 44:40Speaker 4: the Eastern Conference than the West. But man, this is uh,
- 44:44Speaker 4: it's exciting for Canada. You know, I'm an American, but
- 44:47Speaker 4: I'd love to I'd love to see a Canadian market
- 44:50Speaker 4: win the Stanley Cup. You know, it hasn't happened since
- 44:52Speaker 4: I was thirteen years old, and I'd like to see
- 44:55Speaker 4: it from this vantage point of like we were in
- 44:58Speaker 4: Edmonton last year, date JD incredible. I was like, this
- 45:02Speaker 4: place is like nothing I've seen before. I'd love to
- 45:05Speaker 4: see a Canadian market.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Win Robert, you can catch them all the time NHL
- 45:08Speaker 1: now five to seven o'clock east An, NHL Nework and
- 45:10Speaker 1: of course working with the Pegs as well. Buddy, you're
- 45:11Speaker 1: the best. Keep trolling and sirping JD and we'll stock
- 45:14Speaker 1: to you soon. All right, man, all right, demodoff, DEMI good,
- 45:26Speaker 1: let's go. Ken Daniels had the call with Jody Shelley
- 45:29Speaker 1: on Amazon Prime. He becomes the third rookie ever in
- 45:32Speaker 1: the history the National Hockey League and his first period
- 45:34Speaker 1: he had a goal and an assist the other two
- 45:37Speaker 1: by the way of celebrating at Hubert Dough So it
- 45:39Speaker 1: was Awestome Mutch. I've be't demodov for that Montal crowd.
- 45:41Speaker 1: And again, if you're new to Unscripted, perhaps you missed
- 45:43Speaker 1: the previous episode. Jason Nimmers has played in Russia. He's
- 45:46Speaker 1: got Russian spots who told him this guy's gonna better
- 45:48Speaker 1: than meach Coop Flyers fans were appalled, like, what a
- 45:50Speaker 1: terrible take. So for a demodof the demo, God, what
- 45:53Speaker 1: do you got?
- 45:54Speaker 2: Tough fact check on the third goal Chicago, he just had.
- 45:58Speaker 1: A how do you lose? The Blackhawks fourth three to
- 46:01Speaker 1: shoot out winning Come on, Hal, Let's go town, let's.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Go ja they needed. He had a KHL like back
- 46:06Speaker 2: check on the third goal. He just stopped skating from
- 46:09Speaker 2: the red line. I was like, oh no, but he
- 46:11Speaker 2: was offensively in the offensive zone holely, shit, is he good?
- 46:15Speaker 2: And the way he's on it, He's so good on
- 46:18Speaker 2: his edges, He's got that wide base, the way he
- 46:20Speaker 2: protects the puck. I mean, he could have had probably
- 46:23Speaker 2: three goals early in the first and second, and then
- 46:26Speaker 2: he could have assisted on three of them. They were
- 46:28Speaker 2: just missing the open net. First first NHL game. I
- 46:33Speaker 2: was right again, it's just, you know, catching all these
- 46:37Speaker 2: wis is tough. But he was good. He was as advertised,
- 46:40Speaker 2: and I thought, he's he's going to have a bright
- 46:43Speaker 2: future and man. To play under those bright lights and
- 46:46Speaker 2: the fans cheering your name every time you jump over
- 46:48Speaker 2: the bench gave me chills. I was borderline in tears
- 46:52Speaker 2: at home because I was just like, it's such a
- 46:53Speaker 2: cool atmosphere and the way they support their players is
- 46:57Speaker 2: is like nothing else you'll see in the NHL and
- 47:01Speaker 2: most sports man. Honestly, like they're cheering his name and
- 47:05Speaker 2: he's like on the bench. I think he's mouthed. At
- 47:07Speaker 2: one point, you look, he was like holy holy f
- 47:09Speaker 2: And I know he was just like, whoa, my god.
- 47:11Speaker 2: When they announced his assists, they're cheering his name. People
- 47:14Speaker 2: are gonna standing. Oh so yeah, as advertised, good job,
- 47:17Speaker 2: a little bit better defensively. But you know, hey, Demi God,
- 47:21Speaker 2: Demerse Stradamus.
- 47:24Speaker 1: I'm with you. It's good to have the Habs back
- 47:25Speaker 1: of the playoffs, and honestly, it's a different look first
- 47:28Speaker 1: time in hockey history the Rangers, Bruins, and Penguins all
- 47:31Speaker 1: missing the playoffs. Killer for original six American teams. But yeah,
- 47:34Speaker 1: if you want press blood away, we go speaking it,
- 47:36Speaker 1: beat it. You wouldn't be so crass towards this guy,
- 47:37Speaker 1: one of your buddies. San Jose Sharks captain Logan Couture
- 47:40Speaker 1: announcing he will not continue his playing career due to injury.
- 47:43Speaker 1: Techley won't retire, He'll be on long term ir, but
- 47:45Speaker 1: not expected to play again. Three hundred and twenty three goals,
- 47:48Speaker 1: three hundred and seventy assists seven hundred and one career
- 47:50Speaker 1: points in nine hundred and three to three games, all
- 47:52Speaker 1: with the Sharks. At his peak a number one center,
- 47:55Speaker 1: understated Jimmy Fallon called the Croatian Tom cruise on The
- 47:59Speaker 1: Tonight Show.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. It was like some weird you know
- 48:03Speaker 2: phuwbitis where essentially, like anytime you're the socket of your
- 48:08Speaker 2: hip moves and you're skating, it's like full on pain
- 48:11Speaker 2: and fluid. There's fluid build up. It's just it's it
- 48:16Speaker 2: sucks because it's something that as athletes like you always
- 48:19Speaker 2: think you can come back from an injury, a tear,
- 48:21Speaker 2: a knee tear, you know, a concussion, or a shoulder
- 48:25Speaker 2: surgery or back surgery. You're like, I have an opportunity
- 48:28Speaker 2: to come back, but this where you don't, and you're
- 48:30Speaker 2: just always waiting and waiting and waiting. And you know,
- 48:34Speaker 2: I saw him a little bit here and there. I
- 48:35Speaker 2: saw him at the Joe Thornton Jersey retirement, and you know,
- 48:39Speaker 2: I just felt for him. You know, it just didn't
- 48:42Speaker 2: look good mentally to be going through that, and he
- 48:44Speaker 2: just wanted to get to a point where he could,
- 48:46Speaker 2: you know, hang out with his family and hang out
- 48:48Speaker 2: with his kids and make sure they're taken care of.
- 48:50Speaker 2: And that's just such a tough thing as an athlete
- 48:52Speaker 2: to digest because you want to keep competing. And you know,
- 48:55Speaker 2: I've been lucky enough. I've told my story of getting
- 48:57Speaker 2: seven hundred games and after a back surgery and being
- 49:00Speaker 2: able to go out on your own accord. And you
- 49:02Speaker 2: look at the Gabriel Landeskog and the motion he's had
- 49:05Speaker 2: trying to get back and from something that's never happened before,
- 49:08Speaker 2: and you know, to not be able to close that
- 49:10Speaker 2: chapter your life sometimes it's very tough. So you know,
- 49:13Speaker 2: my heart goes out to him. You know, the memories
- 49:15Speaker 2: I have with him, was coming to the league together,
- 49:17Speaker 2: and you know, we kind of both came in a
- 49:19Speaker 2: little bit like you know, I came in as the
- 49:21Speaker 2: seventh rounder. He was a pretty pretty highly touted draft pick,
- 49:24Speaker 2: and we both had immediate success. We were in great teams,
- 49:28Speaker 2: We went to the playoffs. I remember his four goals
- 49:31Speaker 2: in that first playoff series we had. He was just
- 49:34Speaker 2: so clutch early on. He's a consummate pro. He leads
- 49:37Speaker 2: by example. You saw it early on. He battles every shift,
- 49:42Speaker 2: always took the most heat in terms of blocking shots,
- 49:45Speaker 2: taking hits to make plays, playing the hard minutes. And
- 49:48Speaker 2: you know, my memories I have, like I said, was
- 49:50Speaker 2: living in a rinky dink hotel room off the side
- 49:53Speaker 2: of I think it was Stevens Creek Boulevard in San
- 49:57Speaker 2: Jose and we were living next to the Garden City
- 49:59Speaker 2: Casino and we were just like two kids living in
- 50:01Speaker 2: a hotel with Jamie McGinn, just having fun playing hockey
- 50:05Speaker 2: and just being like, how look at the rocket ship
- 50:08Speaker 2: we're on right now. We're playing on this team that
- 50:10Speaker 2: it was just a contender every year, and you know,
- 50:13Speaker 2: we just felt so fortunate, but just had so much
- 50:15Speaker 2: fun with it. And you know, you kind of wish
- 50:18Speaker 2: those moments you recognize where you're in and the happy
- 50:22Speaker 2: times you're having, and you know, I just thought those
- 50:25Speaker 2: are the memories they take with Logan, And you know,
- 50:27Speaker 2: he went through some struggles in that organization, never never
- 50:30Speaker 2: wavered as a leader, and you know, got so close
- 50:33Speaker 2: so many times, and wish he got that cup and
- 50:37Speaker 2: had an opportunity to win. Obviously the year they had
- 50:40Speaker 2: that comeback against Vegas and then they go on to
- 50:43Speaker 2: win and go to the finals. I just think was
- 50:44Speaker 2: something so, you know, kind of led by him a
- 50:47Speaker 2: little bit, just because he's that kind of player. And yeah,
- 50:50Speaker 2: I wish him all the best, honestly, and I wish
- 50:52Speaker 2: he can find I hope he can find some happiness
- 50:54Speaker 2: and closure around his career and make sure him and
- 50:57Speaker 2: his family's good because he's from his NHL career. He's
- 51:00Speaker 2: got this beautiful family and beautiful wife, and I just
- 51:03Speaker 2: hope he takes it with him and is not too
- 51:06Speaker 2: too bummed at what happened, because it's it was out
- 51:08Speaker 2: of his control and there's nothing he could really do.
- 51:11Speaker 1: All time great Shark Jumbo Joe obviously, Patrick Marlow, Joe
- 51:13Speaker 1: Pavelski betting to backop Logan Coutur in that top five
- 51:16Speaker 1: absolute as far as the Great Sharks are concerned. Jason
- 51:18Speaker 1: Nuver's Ohill, I just off that list. Centophil and sixty
- 51:21Speaker 1: Magazine Dreams came out sunday As two years ago. Jonathan
- 51:24Speaker 1: Major's Talent to watch He's building in the Last Black
- 51:27Speaker 1: Man in San Francisco. Joe Talbot interviewed the director in Cinephile.
- 51:30Speaker 1: He's in Captain of Marvel Movies. He's he's in Lovecraft
- 51:34Speaker 1: County on HBO absolved actor. Yeah, and then the Creed
- 51:39Speaker 1: three is unbelievable. And then it's like, oh my god,
- 51:41Speaker 1: magazine dreams like clearly shades of taxi driver. Bodybuilder bulked
- 51:45Speaker 1: up like crazy. He put on I don't know how
- 51:47Speaker 1: much bust he put on, but it took him like
- 51:48Speaker 1: six months to get into Creed three shape. Then it
- 51:50Speaker 1: took Memo their eighteen months to get into bodybuilder shape.
- 51:52Speaker 1: And you know, this is an athlete bodybuilders, like he said,
- 51:55Speaker 1: for eighteen months, six thousand calories a day and just
- 51:58Speaker 1: lifted weights. It's all I did, six thousand colls. This
- 52:00Speaker 1: guy is so jacked in this movie. I'm like, there's
- 52:03Speaker 1: no CJI. This is Jonathan made looking like a bodybuilder.
- 52:06Speaker 1: This is not an act of doing it. And then
- 52:07Speaker 1: what happens, Oh my god. Arrested a lleged domestic assault.
- 52:11Speaker 1: He said she said his girlfriend said he strangled her.
- 52:14Speaker 1: He said, nothing happened. Eventually he goes to court, He's
- 52:16Speaker 1: convicted on a misdemeanor. One year of probation, no jail time.
- 52:20Speaker 1: Now it's two years. Jonathan Major's has been excommunicated, and
- 52:23Speaker 1: finally Briar Cliffe Entertainment's like, hey, that magazine dreams movie
- 52:26Speaker 1: will release it in theaters March twenty. First, I just
- 52:28Speaker 1: watched it on DIRECTORV He paid twenty bucks. It was
- 52:30Speaker 1: so powerful. I watched it twice and now major Sassima
- 52:33Speaker 1: advocates JD Form. Matthew McConaughey came out support of Michael B. Jordan.
- 52:36Speaker 1: Of course from Crete three, Woo Pee Goldbergs said, hey, listen,
- 52:38Speaker 1: whatever happened. He's served his punishment one year probation. Is
- 52:41Speaker 1: he not allowed to have a career. He can't ever
- 52:43Speaker 1: act again. This guy's a major, major talent. He's, you know,
- 52:45Speaker 1: graduated Yel Drama school. A quick thought on the movie
- 52:47Speaker 1: because I want tal to watch it. He's as hyped
- 52:49Speaker 1: as I am. Phenomenal film and an incredible performance. He's
- 52:53Speaker 1: a bodybuilder who's lonely and battling alienation. And one of
- 52:56Speaker 1: the great quotes that I read on the review said,
- 52:58Speaker 1: he drives a fine line between being pitiable and terrifying.
- 53:02Speaker 1: Because this guy is massive and yet he's so awkward,
- 53:05Speaker 1: so you feel sorry for him. There's moments that anger
- 53:07Speaker 1: comes you go, oh my god, I will have a
- 53:10Speaker 1: friend of my watching because God they should just call
- 53:11Speaker 1: the tax driver too. But this, this director's clearly owing
- 53:13Speaker 1: a lot to Scorsese what he was doing a taxi drivering.
- 53:16Speaker 1: Clearly there's some parallels there the wrestler as well, Mickey
- 53:18Speaker 1: work playing a bulked up guy as well. But I
- 53:20Speaker 1: thought his performance was astonishing. He was a great actor. JD.
- 53:23Speaker 1: Your thoughts just on this whole concept of being canceled.
- 53:26Speaker 1: When can a guy come back? Is he allowed to
- 53:27Speaker 1: come back? Now? Am I allowed to say this is
- 53:29Speaker 1: a great performance? Is that okay? He's canceled, he's back.
- 53:32Speaker 2: Now never you're done? Never allowed back? Now. I listen,
- 53:38Speaker 2: he's a great actor.
- 53:39Speaker 4: He is.
- 53:40Speaker 2: But I don't wade into that kind of shit. I listen,
- 53:43Speaker 2: I stay on the fence. I make some outlandish takes,
- 53:46Speaker 2: but I listen. He paid the if, he paid his time,
- 53:49Speaker 2: and you know, he did the crime, paid his time,
- 53:52Speaker 2: and you know things are okay. I guess yeah. I mean,
- 53:55Speaker 2: I watched it. I'm just taking it from a movie perspective.
- 53:58Speaker 2: I watched the trailer and I'm I'm gonna probably go
- 54:01Speaker 2: watch it because it's a trailer.
- 54:03Speaker 1: Yeah, great trailer.
- 54:04Speaker 2: Yeah it's a crazy you gotta be back in.
- 54:06Speaker 1: The trailers you mentioned, like, you know, I'm gonna watch
- 54:08Speaker 1: the way to watch the trailer. This is a trailer, right.
- 54:11Speaker 2: What I find crazy is is I watched him in
- 54:13Speaker 2: that trailer and and you know, he's in bodybuilding shape,
- 54:16Speaker 2: but just like a shout out to bodybuilders because he's
- 54:19Speaker 2: still like on the tiny, tiny version of a bodybuilder.
- 54:22Speaker 2: Like those guys, it's like their life is dedicated to
- 54:25Speaker 2: getting fat pig in that Jack. Then I know a
- 54:28Speaker 2: couple guys, the Chris Bumsteads of the world, and I
- 54:31Speaker 2: know his trainer that trains him, and he's you know,
- 54:35Speaker 2: a little jacked human, and it's crazy the workouts they do.
- 54:38Speaker 2: It is so hard and the way they have to
- 54:41Speaker 2: be regimented is I mean, you can't you can't find
- 54:45Speaker 2: discipline like that anywhere else unless you're a goddamn Navy seal.
- 54:48Speaker 2: So it's it's crazy crazy.
- 54:50Speaker 1: Your point. Major's character idolizes a bodybuilder. He's always writing
- 54:53Speaker 1: letters to him. Brad's a character's name in real life.
- 54:55Speaker 1: It's a four time mister universe. And again Matrix is
- 54:58Speaker 1: killing Maddox as Jack. You see this guy, go oh
- 55:00Speaker 1: my god, like he's like the terminator. It's guy Is Magazine.
- 55:05Speaker 1: Jew's premiered January of twenty twenty three at sun Dance.
- 55:08Speaker 1: And again, a friend of mine said, when he have
- 55:09Speaker 1: gotten an Oscar Macapps, are you kidding? The Academy loves
- 55:12Speaker 1: and actors transform themselves. DeNiro Raging Bull, Christian Bailed the Fighter,
- 55:16Speaker 1: Mickey Rourke the Wrestler Like. There's countless examples of when
- 55:18Speaker 1: guys bulk up, get bigger, or lose weight when they're rewarded.
- 55:21Speaker 1: And again, it's a remarkable performance if you can separate
- 55:24Speaker 1: art from the artists. Check out the film. It's a doozy.
- 55:26Speaker 1: More importantly, we've got two episodes coming every week. An
- 55:29Speaker 1: NHLNG script. My thanks for Jason Demurz to talpinchef's here,
- 55:32Speaker 1: by the way, I was fit to say our producer.
- 55:33Speaker 1: He's also a director, he said. A movie coming out
- 55:35Speaker 1: in The Whalers. Go check it out. Hell plug the movie,
- 55:37Speaker 1: come on plug it.
- 55:39Speaker 2: It's called The Whalers.
- 55:40Speaker 5: It premiered on NBC Sports Boston over the weekend. It'll
- 55:44Speaker 5: also be on s n Y in New York, as
- 55:47Speaker 5: well as a few other regional sports networks across the country.
- 55:52Speaker 5: Anyone who who enjoys the little Whaler's nostalgia. I think
- 55:55Speaker 5: you'll enjoy it.
- 55:56Speaker 2: I know I do.
- 55:58Speaker 1: Save the whale, Old Samuelson. Let's go.
- 56:01Speaker 3: We'll see another scripted Yeah.
- 56:21Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart Podcasts.
