- 1:04welcome to love letters from God Today we're going to be talking
- 1:11about lighting up God's word making it something that is
- 1:19really alive and we want to know this set in his love letter.
- 1:24I'm going to start out with just a few thoughts before we
- 1:29actually do our reading today. How many of you have ever been
- 1:36involved in a power outage? And you know when you have a
- 1:41power outage, it's terrible. And when it happens, it's a
- 1:47crisis. Life almost stops with Jesus.
- 1:55Everything's different. He is the true light in the
- 2:03darkness of our lives. There is no power outage with
- 2:09God. God is our light and our
- 2:16salvation says that He is the one who provides that light.
- 2:28Jesus applies this reality to himself because he's he's God.
- 2:35He tells a story of an adulterous woman in his love
- 2:40letter that was brought before him.
- 2:43And this is in the book of John chapter 8.
- 2:48The religious people wanted Jesus to make a judgment against
- 2:52this situation and obviously what they wanted to do was set a
- 2:58trap for Jesus and he shames them by asking them to throw the
- 3:04first stone if they are without sin.
- 3:10On the other hand, this woman, this adulterous woman that
- 3:15discovers the light of Jesus also, and he doesn't pronounce
- 3:19judgement on her, but he gives her a fresh start through his
- 3:26forgiving love. She discovers that her life in
- 3:31darkness is not the only option for her.
- 3:38Jesus opens up a new life for her.
- 3:44When God's light breaks through, darkness disappears.
- 3:53Everyone who encounters Jesus discovers new meaning in life.
- 4:02Everywhere Jesus is sharing God's creative light.
- 4:11You know, on the Irish coast there are two lighthouses, and
- 4:16these lighthouses are about 500 meters apart at a distance.
- 4:25The lights of both of these lighthouses, they seem to be
- 4:29shining, but in fact, 1 is only reflecting the light of the
- 4:35other one. And like the lighthouse on the
- 4:39Irish coast, you and I can also reflect God's light of grace in
- 4:47the world today. I want you to think about that
- 4:51is we read today and God's love letter concerning his light.
- 5:01We're going to read Psalms 43 and 44 and 45.
- 5:08So let's start out with 43. Vindicate me, O God, plead my
- 5:16cause against an ungodly nation. Oh, deliver me from the
- 5:22deceitful and unjust man, for You are the God of my strength.
- 5:30Why do you cast me off? Why do I go mourning because of
- 5:34the oppression of the enemy? Oh, send out your light and your
- 5:41truth. Let them lead me, and let them
- 5:45bring me to your holy hill and to your Tabernacle.
- 5:50Then I will go to the altar of God, To God my exceeding joy,
- 5:57and on the harp I will praise you.
- 5:59O God, my God, why are you cast down on my soul?
- 6:05Why are you disquieted within me?
- 6:08Hope in God, for I shall yet praise him the help of my
- 6:14countenance and my God. That's Psalm 43.
- 6:20It's a short Psalm, but notice how David is expressing the idea
- 6:26that the light that see him through the dark days is God's
- 6:32light, and that's what his love letter is telling us.
- 6:37Let's look at Psalm 44. We have heard with our ears, O
- 6:42God, our fathers have told us, the deeds you did in their days.
- 6:48In the days of old. You drove out the nations with
- 6:52your hand, but them you planted. You afflicted the peoples, and
- 6:57they cast them out. For they did not gain possession
- 7:02of the land by their own sword, nor did their own arm save them.
- 7:09But it was in your right hand, your arm, and the light of your
- 7:14countenance, because you favored them.
- 7:18You are my king, O God, command victories for Jacob through you.
- 7:25You will push down our enemies, though your name.
- 7:29Through your name we will trample those who rise up
- 7:33against us. For I will not trust in my bow,
- 7:37nor shall my sword save me. But you have saved us from our
- 7:43enemies, and I put to shame those who hated us.
- 7:48In God we boast all day long and praise your name forever.
- 7:54But you have cast us off and put us to shame.
- 7:58And you did not go out with our armies.
- 8:02You make us turn back from the enemy and those who hate us,
- 8:07taking spoil for themselves. You've given us up like sheep
- 8:13intended for food, and have scattered us among the nations.
- 8:18You sell your people for next to nothing, and are not enriched by
- 8:23selling them. You make us a reproach to our
- 8:26neighbors, a scorn and a derision to those all around us.
- 8:32You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head
- 8:36among the peoples. My dishonor is continually
- 8:40before me, and the shame of my face has covered me because of
- 8:47the voice of Him who reproaches and reviles, and because of the
- 8:53enemy and the adventure. All this has come upon us, but
- 8:59we've not forgotten you, nor have we dealt falsely with your
- 9:04covenant. Our heart has not turned back,
- 9:09nor have our steps departed from your way, but you have severely
- 9:14broken us in the place of jackals and covered us with the
- 9:19shadow of death. If we had forgotten the name of
- 9:23our God, or stretched out our hands to a foreign God, would
- 9:28not God search this out, for He knows the secrets of the heart.
- 9:36Yet for your sake we are killed all day long.
- 9:40We are counted as sheep for the slaughter.
- 9:44Awake. Why do you sleep, O Lord?
- 9:47Arise, do not cast us off forever.
- 9:52Why do you hide your face and forget our affliction and our
- 9:55oppression? For our soul is bowed down to
- 9:59the dust, our body clings to the ground.
- 10:03Arise for our help, and redeem us for your mercy's sake.
- 10:08Such as the reading of Psalms 44.
- 10:11In that Psalm, David's kind of down on God sounds like God's
- 10:16just against them in everything they do.
- 10:20And David's pouring his heart out and saying, what's the
- 10:23matter, God what? What have we done?
- 10:25Why? Why are you causing all these
- 10:28problems for us? But notice now in Psalm 45 how
- 10:34things change. My heart is overflowing with a
- 10:40good theme. I recite my composition
- 10:44concerning the King. My tongue is the pen of a ready
- 10:48writer. You are fairer than the sons of
- 10:52men. Grace is poured upon your lips.
- 10:57Therefore God has blessed you forever.
- 11:00Gird your sword upon your thigh, Almighty One, with your glory
- 11:05and your majesty, and in Your majesty ride prosperously
- 11:11because of truth, humility, and righteousness, and your right
- 11:17hand shall teach you awesome things.
- 11:22Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the King's enemies.
- 11:27The peoples fall under you. Your throne, O God, is forever
- 11:34and ever. A scepter of righteousness is
- 11:39the scepter of your Kingdom. You love righteousness and hate
- 11:45wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has
- 11:49anointed you with the oil of gladness more than your
- 11:55companions. All your garments are scented
- 12:01with mirror and aloes. Kassia, out of the ivory palaces
- 12:08by which they have made you glad, King's daughters are among
- 12:12your honorable women. At your right hand stands the
- 12:17Queen in gold from Ophir. Listen, O daughter, consider and
- 12:23incline your ear. Forget your own people also, and
- 12:27your father's house. So the King will greatly desire
- 12:31your beauty, because he is your Lord.
- 12:35Worship him, and the daughter of Tyre will come with a gift.
- 12:41The rich among the people will seek your favor.
- 12:45The royal daughter is all glorious within the palace.
- 12:51Her clothing is woven with gold. She shall be brought to the king
- 12:56in robes of many colors. The virgins, her companions who
- 13:03follow her, shall be brought to you with gladness and rejoicing
- 13:09they should be brought. They shall enter the King's
- 13:12palace instead of your father's, shall be your sons, whom you
- 13:18shall make Princess in all the earth.
- 13:22I will make your name to be remembered in all generations.
- 13:27Therefore, the people should praise you forever and ever.
- 13:33And so is the reading of Psalm 45.
- 13:38I've got one other little poem that I found that I want to read
- 13:43you that kind of bears out some of this same thought here.
- 13:50This poem is called Sun Ray. There's something inside me that
- 13:59I don't see. Others say they are proud, proud
- 14:05of me. I've done nothing heroic, I
- 14:11reply, my mouth ajar. I've not cured the ill or
- 14:16discovered A star. It's your battle through
- 14:20journey, making this proud silver lining on board
- 14:27Destination all Cloud. We worried and fretted with your
- 14:33anxiety and woes. Now you're climbing as a bird in
- 14:39vulture of crows. You wore lifeless eyes tract
- 14:44tears on cheeks. Now it's our proud hearts that
- 14:50quietly weep. You've not discovered A star or
- 14:55cured the ill, though you reach to inspire with mercy and will.
- 15:02I need to believe, believe more in me, look down the lens for
- 15:10what others may see. I'm not fond of looking how well
- 15:15I've done, but I'm beginning to see how far I have come.
- 15:22So with that, we need to remember we're an important
- 15:27person. When God put us here on earth,
- 15:31He had a job for us to do and He's willing to give us all the
- 15:36help that is necessary. His love letter tells us what
- 15:41all of that is about. We need to read it, find out how
- 15:46much He loves us, and pass that love on the others.
- 15:51Shall we pray? Father in heaven, it's so good
- 15:56to know you're there. It's so good to realize that You
- 16:01are the light we need with every step we take.
- 16:08Help us to remember that and help us to read through your
- 16:12love letter and see how much help that you have given to so
- 16:17many. And it's all in there for an
- 16:20example for us to know. We're thankful that you will
- 16:26help us in those dark times. And we pray this in the name of
- 16:31the man who came here willingly offered his life so we could be
- 16:38a part of that great plan you had in mind.
- 16:42We pray this in his name, Amen. That's it for today.
