- 0:00Speaker 1: Rolling with South Carolina artists. And this course is James Brown,
- 0:03Speaker 1: the Boss. And now we welcome in the Boss, Craig Way,
- 0:07Speaker 1: who does join us live from Joyrwold up.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Craig, Yeah, not from South Carolina, joining you from Arlington
- 0:15Speaker 2: in the Founders Club, where we were when we visited
- 0:18Speaker 2: a couple of days ago as they wrap up the
- 0:19Speaker 2: four eight Division two championship game between Carthage and Levega.
- 0:23Speaker 3: But yeah, it's good to be back on again. Man.
- 0:26Speaker 3: It's day number.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Three of the UIL State High School Football Championships.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yesterday a shocker between Columbus and Malakoff forty eight
- 0:34Speaker 1: to fourteen. And then you mentioned, of course that the
- 0:36Speaker 1: triple overtime game earlier between Ganado and Stamford, and then
- 0:41Speaker 1: we saw Gunter shut out wood Fill twenty eight. Nothing
- 0:43Speaker 1: take us through those games yesterday?
- 0:45Speaker 2: Well, I think so far to this point, Cam, everything
- 0:48Speaker 2: has gone according to plan, going all the way back
- 0:51Speaker 2: to Wenday. I stay courting the plant, going the way
- 0:53Speaker 2: that both Greg Tepper and Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine
- 0:56Speaker 2: and myself thought it might. We thought the two six
- 0:59Speaker 2: man games would be forty five point Mercy rules that's
- 1:02Speaker 2: exactly what they were with Jaydon winning over Oakwood in
- 1:06Speaker 2: the first game fifty four to eight. And so because
- 1:09Speaker 2: of the forty five point mercy rule, which says, if
- 1:11Speaker 2: you're up by forty five points or more at halftime
- 1:13Speaker 2: or any point in the second half, this is for
- 1:15Speaker 2: six man football only, but if those parameters come to play,
- 1:19Speaker 2: then the game is over. So it was over at
- 1:20Speaker 2: halftime on the first game. The second game, Gordon was
- 1:23Speaker 2: up on White Face sixty four to twenty fourth a half,
- 1:26Speaker 2: they're up forty, and we thought the game might get
- 1:29Speaker 2: into the second half, but that it wouldn't last long.
- 1:31Speaker 3: And that's exactly what happened.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Her producer assets at half time since Gordon was going
- 1:35Speaker 2: to get the football first, needing only a touchdown to
- 1:37Speaker 2: end the game. On the mercy rule, do you how
- 1:40Speaker 2: many plays you think it'll take? And Granger Huntress, who
- 1:42Speaker 2: was my analyst on the telecast and the six man guru,
- 1:45Speaker 2: said one play, Well, if you don't count the second
- 1:48Speaker 2: half kickoff, it was. He was exactly right, because if
- 1:51Speaker 2: White Face tried an onside kick, they didn't recover. And
- 1:53Speaker 2: then on the very next play, Gordon went for a
- 1:56Speaker 2: forty five yard touchdown. Ry Reid did red is a
- 2:00Speaker 2: lot like you know, we were talking about Grayson Rigden
- 2:02Speaker 2: and making the transition from six man football to eleven
- 2:06Speaker 2: man football for Columbus, Ry Reid may well do the same.
- 2:09Speaker 2: He's a junior great player at Gordon High School and
- 2:12Speaker 2: he already is a scholarship offer on the table from
- 2:14Speaker 2: North Texas, so we may see that. And he was
- 2:17Speaker 2: the outstanding defensive player and the outstanding offensive player, or
- 2:22Speaker 2: the other way around. Striker Reid was the outstanding offensive
- 2:26Speaker 2: player and he was the outstanding defensive player the two cousins.
- 2:29Speaker 3: So it's.
- 2:32Speaker 2: All of that had gone according to plan. The night
- 2:34Speaker 2: game between Munster and Shiner, which we kind of referred
- 2:36Speaker 2: to as the Beer Geese Bowl, went down to the
- 2:39Speaker 2: final minute, Munster scoring with forty seconds to go to
- 2:42Speaker 2: win thirty six to twenty nine. And then the first
- 2:44Speaker 2: game yesterday, what a marvelous game. A friend, Mike Leslie
- 2:49Speaker 2: from WFA Channel eight up here in Dallas had the
- 2:51Speaker 2: call on that as he worked with Isaiah Stamback of
- 2:54Speaker 2: the Cowboys SilverStar Network coverage, and that was a great game.
- 2:59Speaker 2: It went triple overtime, Gnado winning its first eight title
- 3:03Speaker 2: as they won thirty to twenty eight. They were able
- 3:06Speaker 2: to get a two point conversion and then and then
- 3:08Speaker 2: intercept a path in the end zone from Stamford to
- 3:12Speaker 2: win it. So Ganada wins its first Ay title. Gunter
- 3:14Speaker 2: followed in the second they made it a three peat.
- 3:17Speaker 2: We thought they'd probably handle Woodville. They just methodically pulled away.
- 3:21Speaker 2: It was only seven to nothing at half, they pulled away.
- 3:23Speaker 2: They won twenty eight to nothing. And then the night game,
- 3:25Speaker 2: like you said, that was the shocker in terms of
- 3:27Speaker 2: the margin. It was number one Malakoff, who was the
- 3:30Speaker 2: defending state champs, unbeaten against Columbus who had lost one time.
- 3:35Speaker 2: But Columbus so explosive, and we thought that Columbus probably
- 3:40Speaker 2: had an edge. And so Columbus goes right down the
- 3:43Speaker 2: field and scores. And so they go down the field
- 3:46Speaker 2: and score, and then Malakoff goes down the field and scored.
- 3:48Speaker 2: With thought, okay, buckle up, it's gonna be a great game.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Malakoff didn't score again until there was a minute to
- 3:52Speaker 2: go in the ballgame. Columbus dominated the game. They won
- 3:55Speaker 2: forty eight fourteen. It was a night for the showbl
- 3:57Speaker 2: Family head coach Matt Shobel, who had played at TCU
- 4:01Speaker 2: and in the NFL, the head coach. His assistant coach
- 4:05Speaker 2: there at Columbus is Aaron Shoble, who also played at TCU,
- 4:09Speaker 2: who also played in the NFL, and their.
- 4:11Speaker 3: Two sons factored in.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Adam Shobel was the offensive MVP, their outstanding quarterback who's
- 4:17Speaker 2: headed for TCU, and John Shobel, his cousin, was the
- 4:20Speaker 2: defensive MVP. They both had great games. Grayson Rigged in
- 4:25Speaker 2: the chorus, the six man transfer, had an outstanding game.
- 4:29Speaker 2: He scored four touchdowns, went over two thousand rushing yards
- 4:32Speaker 2: for the season. He did injure his knee in the
- 4:34Speaker 2: fourth quarter and came out of the ball game. We
- 4:36Speaker 2: talked to him after the game and said, how's the knee,
- 4:39Speaker 2: and he said, it hurts, but I'm gonna be okay.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Remember he's going to Wyoming on a scholarship. So that's
- 4:43Speaker 2: how it's gone. The first one in Carthage slowly pulling
- 4:46Speaker 2: away from a tough Lavega team in the fourth quarter
- 4:49Speaker 2: here of the four eight Division two contest.
- 4:51Speaker 1: So how many in a row is that for Carthage?
- 4:53Speaker 2: Now not so much in a row, because they didn't
- 4:57Speaker 2: win last year film were penough. But it's ten state
- 5:00Speaker 2: titles and all ten under Scott Sarrat. Carthage has never
- 5:06Speaker 2: lost a state championship game.
- 5:07Speaker 3: That's the thing that's that's interesting.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Alito has the most titles with twelve, but that split
- 5:12Speaker 2: up between three coaches. Tim mccannon with most of them,
- 5:16Speaker 2: Steve Wood with a title, Robbie Jones with a title.
- 5:19Speaker 2: This guy Scott Sarrat, who by the way, is married
- 5:22Speaker 2: to Barry Switzer's daughter.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Interesting story.
- 5:26Speaker 2: There ten rings, and there's this great story about how
- 5:29Speaker 2: he keeps all of his state championship rings in a.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Sack like a Walmart sack or something.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Isn't it doesn't display him or anything like that, but
- 5:38Speaker 2: he is. He's quite the head coach and he is
- 5:40Speaker 2: and he's turned down bigger jobs along the way. The
- 5:44Speaker 2: community is so involved with the program and so intertwined
- 5:48Speaker 2: with the team, and he's had the same staff, so
- 5:51Speaker 2: the school board and everybody both they keep those guys
- 5:54Speaker 2: happy and they keep them i think four to fied
- 5:57Speaker 2: enough at their salaries and things like that, and so
- 5:59Speaker 2: they the thing running.
- 6:01Speaker 3: And that's one of the things.
- 6:02Speaker 2: That makes Carthage as tough as they do, although they
- 6:04Speaker 2: have some very talented athletes as well.
- 6:08Speaker 1: That's an impressive feat already, but to be able to
- 6:09Speaker 1: do it in the twenty first century, I think is
- 6:11Speaker 1: even more impressive, especially with how big the game of
- 6:14Speaker 1: a high school football has gotten up the six classes. Now, okay,
- 6:17Speaker 1: two more games today, Craig Selena first Killed four A
- 6:20Speaker 1: Division one at three o'clock and then the five eight
- 6:22Speaker 1: Division two game at seven South O'll click versus Richmond Randall.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Yeah, the first game that comes up here in a
- 6:30Speaker 2: little while between. Salina the number one team in the state,
- 6:34Speaker 2: undefeated and they've been number one pretty much the entire season,
- 6:38Speaker 2: and they're playing a kill Gore team that beat Carthage
- 6:41Speaker 2: by the way first game of the year.
- 6:44Speaker 3: But they've had their ups and downs.
- 6:45Speaker 2: They've lost a couple of ball games, and there's times
- 6:47Speaker 2: when they look really really good and they have great athletes,
- 6:50Speaker 2: and then there's times when they do things just slip
- 6:53Speaker 2: off the table a little bit. But if they're on
- 6:55Speaker 2: their game, they make it tough. Solina is like a machine,
- 6:57Speaker 2: a lot of precision, very much. It's like Carthage in
- 7:00Speaker 2: that respect. And if if if you see Kilgore able
- 7:06Speaker 2: to stay away from the stakes and turnovers, It's gonna
- 7:09Speaker 2: be a really good game.
- 7:09Speaker 3: Otherwise I think Solana could wind up winning it.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Obviously, Tomorrow he will be at dk RS Texas takes
- 7:14Speaker 1: on Clemson. But three really good games starting off with
- 7:18Speaker 1: Highland Park for Smithson Valley in eleven to five A
- 7:20Speaker 1: Division one, and then the two local Austin teams at
- 7:23Speaker 1: three o'clock six A Division two South Lake Carroll against
- 7:26Speaker 1: Vandergriff and then seven o'clock six A Division one North
- 7:30Speaker 1: Crowley Firsus Austin Westlake. What do you think about these
- 7:33Speaker 1: three matchups tomorrow?
- 7:34Speaker 2: Craig Well, and I didn't want to sell tonight's game short.
- 7:37Speaker 2: I failed to mention that Richman Ranstafocliff five A Division two.
- 7:41Speaker 2: I think it's gonna be a throwdown that thing. Two
- 7:44Speaker 2: teams very well coached, very athletic, and.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Kind of mean.
- 7:48Speaker 2: It could it could really be something physical to watch
- 7:52Speaker 2: tonight now tomorrow. I think Tepper put it best when
- 7:56Speaker 2: he talked ab Highland Park at Smithson Valley. He said,
- 7:58Speaker 2: if you like blocking and tacking, you're gonna love this
- 8:00Speaker 2: because it is precision football, hard hitting defenses I could
- 8:06Speaker 2: see a twenty one to fourteen ball game either way.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I think both ball clubs are really good. And then
- 8:11Speaker 2: you mentioned the two area schools. Obviously, Vandergriff I think
- 8:15Speaker 2: has a really good chance. Does Vandergriff to win the
- 8:20Speaker 2: state title? Now they're playing South Lake. Carrol's used to
- 8:22Speaker 2: be in there. Carroll's won eight state championships, but they've
- 8:26Speaker 2: lost both of the running backs. They've had to find
- 8:28Speaker 2: other ways to do it. Vandergriff has been very well balanced.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I think this thing is almost a toss up. I
- 8:34Speaker 2: like Vandergriff. And then the game tomorrow night, Westlake and
- 8:38Speaker 2: North Crowley, I think it is a toss up. North
- 8:40Speaker 2: Crowley again with great athletes, but this is a team
- 8:44Speaker 2: that's much like the North Shore team that Tony Salas
- 8:48Speaker 2: are schemed up as well as anybody, and I've had
- 8:51Speaker 2: several coaches tell me that this week, and Tepper and
- 8:54Speaker 2: I were talking about as well. That was about as
- 8:57Speaker 2: solid and as spectacular a defensive game plan as any
- 9:01Speaker 2: of us have ever seen. What Westlake did defensively to
- 9:04Speaker 2: Galena Park North Shore last week. They're gonna need to
- 9:06Speaker 2: have a similar type not only plan, but also execution.
- 9:09Speaker 2: And Reecee Wise played really well last week on the
- 9:12Speaker 2: offensive side of quarterback for Westlake. If he has another
- 9:15Speaker 2: game like that, they've got a shot to win it
- 9:16Speaker 2: as well.
- 9:17Speaker 1: It should be a lot of fun. Of course, you
- 9:18Speaker 1: can watch all the games on the fan Duel Sports Network. Okay,
- 9:22Speaker 1: last night, Craig, you're busy, but Jordan Pope forty two
- 9:25Speaker 1: points a Moody Center record, a career high for Jordan
- 9:29Speaker 1: Pope and fantastic performance and did it without Trey Johnson.
- 9:34Speaker 1: And of course the night before, Craig, you're on the
- 9:36Speaker 1: call on Sunday against Arkansas Pie and Bluff, we saw
- 9:39Speaker 1: Nick Cody had twenty points. We're seeing a lot of
- 9:41Speaker 1: guys now step up and we're seeing the death of
- 9:43Speaker 1: this Texas basketball team.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and I had it on my laptop while I
- 9:48Speaker 2: was calling the gig last night.
- 9:50Speaker 3: On it you know I'm gonna be doing that.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Listening to Roger and Eddie Horn.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, the game as well, New Orleans game notes
- 10:00Speaker 2: Eddie orn h O R A N. But you know,
- 10:04Speaker 2: it was one of those things where we've we talked
- 10:09Speaker 2: to Jordan Pope in one of those preseason shows out
- 10:13Speaker 2: at Pluckers and the guy was a score when he
- 10:16Speaker 2: was at Oregon State, so we've been waiting to see
- 10:19Speaker 2: him and it's been slowly opening up for him, and
- 10:23Speaker 2: then it exploded. Obviously last night you mentioned they were
- 10:26Speaker 2: holding out Trey Johnson precautionarily. He gets even more rest now,
- 10:30Speaker 2: can get all the way to the twenty ninth before
- 10:32Speaker 2: they play another game, so that that sore hip feels
- 10:35Speaker 2: a lot better and I think he'll be fine. But
- 10:37Speaker 2: in Jordan Pope and some of those other guys, we
- 10:39Speaker 2: see what they can do offensively, and that was pretty
- 10:42Speaker 2: impressive to see.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Yeah, I think if it was a must winning game,
- 10:45Speaker 1: I think we would have seen both Trey Johnson and
- 10:47Speaker 1: Jason kenn out there. They both went through pregame warm ups,
- 10:50Speaker 1: they both were moving fine, they both looked happy. But
- 10:53Speaker 1: of course, going into SEC play, we know how physical
- 10:56Speaker 1: it's going to be. In the beginning of the schedule
- 10:57Speaker 1: for Texas basketball is super tough, starting off with Texas
- 11:00Speaker 1: A and M.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, and so you want to get as many
- 11:05Speaker 2: reps and as many guys into as many combinations as
- 11:09Speaker 2: Rodney Terry and the staff want to see before they
- 11:12Speaker 2: open conference play in College Station on the fourth all
- 11:15Speaker 2: of that's really important.
- 11:16Speaker 3: So you want to get as comfortable as you.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Can with your guys out there before you take the
- 11:21Speaker 2: floor there at Rid Arena.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Tomorrow, Texas Clemson in the second college football playoff game
- 11:27Speaker 1: for the Long Gordons. And you, of course you've been
- 11:28Speaker 1: able to call the first one and now the second one,
- 11:30Speaker 1: but the first time ever hosting a college football game
- 11:34Speaker 1: on site in the first round of college football playoff.
- 11:36Speaker 1: I'm sure you and Roger and Will Matthews are absolutely
- 11:38Speaker 1: stoked for this game tomorrow.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Yeah, And I've been talking about this during the course
- 11:43Speaker 2: of the week, and I think I did an interview
- 11:44Speaker 2: with some folks on Serious XM about it, and they
- 11:47Speaker 2: asked me about the playoff games being at home and
- 11:50Speaker 2: how did I think it would roll out, And I said, well,
- 11:53Speaker 2: in Austin, it all roll out just fine, and the
- 11:54Speaker 2: games is sellout. Temperature will be in the low of
- 11:57Speaker 2: the mid sixties anywhere from whatever sixty two to sixty
- 11:59Speaker 2: five grees Sonny. Gonna be great conditions for football. But also,
- 12:04Speaker 2: when you think about it, the four locations where they
- 12:07Speaker 2: have on campus games, Yeah, you can pick out some
- 12:10Speaker 2: other ones that are probably just as tradition Layden and
- 12:14Speaker 2: historic places like Alabama or Nebraska or some of the
- 12:19Speaker 2: other places of Michigan the Big House, but in the Horseshoe,
- 12:25Speaker 2: in Columbus, Happy Valley, at Penn State Touchdown Jesus at
- 12:29Speaker 2: Notre Dame, and then of course at DKR Texas Memorial Stadium.
- 12:33Speaker 2: It's hard to imagine too many more venues that are
- 12:37Speaker 2: equally as traditioned. Layden to host the first time ever
- 12:41Speaker 2: that they've had playoff games on campus sites, it's a
- 12:43Speaker 2: pretty good deal and I think we're all looking forward
- 12:46Speaker 2: to it.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm super excited to Bill a visit with you
- 12:48Speaker 1: and Roger tomorrow on Long Corms game there. Of course,
- 12:50Speaker 1: recovers begins at two o'clock with the Long corn Raio
- 12:53Speaker 1: Network game. Okay, last question for you, Craig. Last night,
- 12:56Speaker 1: something happened for the first time in the NFL, I
- 13:00Speaker 1: believe since the seventies, the rare fair catch kick from
- 13:06Speaker 1: Cameron Dicker a fifty seven yarder. I did not know
- 13:09Speaker 1: this was a rule. I'm sure you did. It took
- 13:11Speaker 1: me about ten minutes and a couple of YouTube videos
- 13:13Speaker 1: to understand what was happening last night, But how about
- 13:16Speaker 1: Cameron Dicker the fifty seven yard field goald off the
- 13:19Speaker 1: rare fair catch kick. Is Los Angeles able to come
- 13:22Speaker 1: back and win the game on Thursday Night football?
- 13:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a rule, and it's been around obviously a
- 13:28Speaker 2: long long time. And I will tell you the first
- 13:31Speaker 2: time I really became aware of it, believe it or not,
- 13:36Speaker 2: it was in a playoff game between the Cowboys and
- 13:38Speaker 2: the Rams. And this goes back to be nineteen eighty
- 13:42Speaker 2: five when Eric Dickerson had a great year and the
- 13:45Speaker 2: Rams shut out the Cowboys that day in Anaheim. That
- 13:48Speaker 2: when they were playing their home games there in Anaheim,
- 13:50Speaker 2: they beat them twenty to nothing. There was a deal
- 13:52Speaker 2: just like that, and I think it was right at
- 13:56Speaker 2: the end of the first half where a fair catch. Now,
- 13:58Speaker 2: it wasn't a deal with the inner few pearance of
- 14:00Speaker 2: a fair catch as we saw. It was a legitimate
- 14:02Speaker 2: fair catch that the Cowboys signal for caught it. Tom
- 14:06Speaker 2: Landery knew about the rule. They tried it but missed it,
- 14:09Speaker 2: missed the field goal there. So, like you said, it
- 14:11Speaker 2: hadn't happened since the seventies. But that goes back cam
- 14:15Speaker 2: to things like the drop kicks, that are legal, you
- 14:20Speaker 2: can drop kick a field goal or an extra point,
- 14:22Speaker 2: and that's a lost art in football. And this is
- 14:25Speaker 2: another one of those obscure rules that if you fair
- 14:29Speaker 2: catch it anywhere on the field, you can free kick
- 14:33Speaker 2: a field goal with no rush from the opponent. Now,
- 14:36Speaker 2: the reason why it isn't really done much is because
- 14:39Speaker 2: most punts you wind up going well on the other
- 14:42Speaker 2: side of midfield, and so you wouldn't realistically try it.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Maybe at the end of a half or end of
- 14:49Speaker 2: a game, but most of them are going to be
- 14:51Speaker 2: deep enough to where it's unrealistic to try.
- 14:54Speaker 3: A field goal of that distance.
- 14:56Speaker 2: It was interesting hearing Jim Harball talk about saying it's
- 14:58Speaker 2: his favorite rule and he's done it before and wanted
- 15:02Speaker 2: to do it again. His favorite rule, but the circumstances
- 15:05Speaker 2: have to be right, and the circumstances were right because
- 15:08Speaker 2: of the kick catch interference and the penalty yardage that
- 15:12Speaker 2: then gave Cameron Dicker an opportunity to knock one down
- 15:16Speaker 2: from fifty seven yards, So that all the circumstances have
- 15:21Speaker 2: to work out to make it work, and it did
- 15:25Speaker 2: for the Chargers last time in the game they really
- 15:27Speaker 2: needed to win. Now, if the Coltson Dolphins lose over
- 15:30Speaker 2: the weekend, then the Chargers clinch the playoffs. Right, And
- 15:33Speaker 2: I'll leave you with this can when I get back
- 15:36Speaker 2: in the studio on Monday, you're gonna like this. I
- 15:40Speaker 2: was digging through my backpack because I was looking for
- 15:44Speaker 2: a credential and I found the credential.
- 15:47Speaker 3: But I was digging through my backpack. The other thing
- 15:49Speaker 3: I found.
- 15:49Speaker 2: In my backpack, written down on an envelope are predictions
- 15:55Speaker 2: for the year. Who was going to be, who was
- 15:58Speaker 2: going to win the division since and who we're gonna
- 16:00Speaker 2: be the wild cards and the conference champions and the
- 16:04Speaker 2: super Bowl champion.
- 16:05Speaker 3: So you're you're you're gonna have a laugh. I'm gonna
- 16:08Speaker 3: have a laugh too.
- 16:09Speaker 2: I don't know if you remember them, but uh, a
- 16:13Speaker 2: couple of moer you're gonna go, I really made that
- 16:16Speaker 2: pick and I did.
- 16:17Speaker 3: The same thing. Yeah. So that's then.
- 16:19Speaker 2: And we made some picks that look good right now,
- 16:21Speaker 2: look really good. But there were some that we went
