- 1:57Speaker 2: the link with the description to this episode, and with
- 2:00Speaker 2: that let's get to hurdling. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion,
- 2:11Speaker 2: but if you ask me, the New York City Marathon
- 2:14Speaker 2: is the best marathon.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Okay, Okay, So I'm a New Yorker.
- 2:18Speaker 2: I've been living here for eight years, which means I'm
- 2:21Speaker 2: a little biased, But what I do know is that
- 2:25Speaker 2: there is absolutely nothing like the crowds in New York.
- 2:29Speaker 2: From the moment you step foot off of the arizontal bridge,
- 2:32Speaker 2: you get into Brooklyn, you make your way through all
- 2:36Speaker 2: of the streets and head towards Central Park. The roads
- 2:39Speaker 2: are plagued with people, and that is just a testament
- 2:43Speaker 2: to the rich culture, the rich heart of New York City.
- 2:46Speaker 2: You know, it's always so beautiful because there's nothing like
- 2:50Speaker 2: a marathon where people of all walks of life, they
- 2:53Speaker 2: come out, they cheer. It doesn't matter what your religion is,
- 2:57Speaker 2: or what your sex is, who you're interested in, where
- 3:00Speaker 2: you come from. Everyone just like comes out on this
- 3:03Speaker 2: one big festive day for one awesome reason. Now I
- 3:09Speaker 2: affectionately call the first New York City Marathon I ever
- 3:11Speaker 2: ran as the best day of my life. It was
- 3:13Speaker 2: the second marathon I had ever completed, next to Hartford
- 3:17Speaker 2: the year before, and it was just something I never
- 3:20Speaker 2: thought as a young woman that I would be capable of.
- 3:26Speaker 2: So now, if you are lacing up to run in
- 3:29Speaker 2: New York this year, I have the tips and tricks
- 3:32Speaker 2: my veteran wisdom to dispel on you all. First things, First,
- 3:38Speaker 2: layer a lot.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Now.
- 3:40Speaker 2: General transportation to the starting line and I don't have
- 3:42Speaker 2: all the details on this, So if you need information
- 3:45Speaker 2: at all about logistics when it comes to New York
- 3:47Speaker 2: City marathon, go on over to the New York Roadrunners website.
- 3:51Speaker 2: But general transportation to the starting line requires that participants
- 3:54Speaker 2: get on the Staten Island ferry and arrive at the
- 3:58Speaker 2: starting village superly. My first year, temperatures were literally in
- 4:03Speaker 2: the low thirties, which means that I was waiting in
- 4:07Speaker 2: the starting village for at least two hours and I
- 4:10Speaker 2: was really cold. My biggest tip to New York City
- 4:14Speaker 2: marathoners is make that time in the starting village as
- 4:18Speaker 2: comfortable as possible. That means bring things like fuzzy bathrobes, blankets, sweatshirts, sweatpants.
- 4:25Speaker 2: You're gonna need a lot of throwaway clothes. Now, don't worry.
- 4:28Speaker 2: All of your throwaway clothes are then put into bins
- 4:31Speaker 2: which are then donated, so all that stuff is going
- 4:34Speaker 2: toward a good purpose. But yeah, you want to bring
- 4:37Speaker 2: old winter jackets, extra sweatpants, a blanket or super helpful
- 4:41Speaker 2: bring things like pillows. I've heard of people bring things
- 4:44Speaker 2: like pool floats, old sleeping bags, whatever you can bring
- 4:47Speaker 2: with you to get super super cozy. Another simple tip
- 4:52Speaker 2: I love for the starting line, bring like brainless magazines. Again,
- 4:55Speaker 2: a lot of time there. The last thing you want
- 4:57Speaker 2: to do is be sitting there just like twitally your
- 5:00Speaker 2: thumbs and freaking out. So bring old magazines. Definitely check
- 5:04Speaker 2: in with any friends you have running and see where
- 5:06Speaker 2: they're going to be.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Link up that kind of stuff. Super super helpful. All right.
- 5:12Speaker 2: Next tip, wear your name on your shirt. I think
- 5:16Speaker 2: you should do this no matter what marathon you're running
- 5:18Speaker 2: and where you are. I didn't do it in Chicago
- 5:20Speaker 2: this year, and I kind of recredit it, but especially
- 5:24Speaker 2: in New York with the crowds as robust as they are,
- 5:27Speaker 2: it is just like the best thing when you're running
- 5:29Speaker 2: and you're struggling, and like hundreds of thousands of people
- 5:33Speaker 2: are just cheering for you, just strangers. It's kind of
- 5:37Speaker 2: a It's something that sometimes I wish we could have
- 5:39Speaker 2: like on a regular basis.
- 5:42Speaker 1: All right.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Next tip, incorporate hill running into your training. Okay, so
- 5:46Speaker 2: you're listening to this the week of a marathon, do
- 5:49Speaker 2: not freak out. Every marathon has its fair share of challenges.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Than in New York City. That is definitely hills. What
- 5:56Speaker 2: I want you to do is, when you approach these hills,
- 5:59Speaker 2: just keep going back to Colm. Obviously, there are a
- 6:02Speaker 2: few of them in the race. At mile fifteen, you'll
- 6:05Speaker 2: face what many will tell you is the worst of them,
- 6:07Speaker 2: and that's the Queensboro Bridge. And I remember distinctly during
- 6:10Speaker 2: my first New York City that I got to the
- 6:12Speaker 2: Queensboro Bridge and everyone had built up this huge hill
- 6:15Speaker 2: to me, and in reality, I didn't think it was
- 6:18Speaker 2: that bad at all. If you are in New Yorker
- 6:20Speaker 2: and you're used to running loops of Central Park, the
- 6:23Speaker 2: Queensboro Bridge hill is much less of a greed than
- 6:27Speaker 2: Harlem Hill and honestly, probably even Cat Hill. So it's
- 6:32Speaker 2: only a problem if you make it a problem. Go
- 6:35Speaker 2: into it with a sense of calm and remember that
- 6:37Speaker 2: you put in the work and you're going to be
- 6:39Speaker 2: just fine. Next tip, be your own plan B, especially
- 6:45Speaker 2: when it comes to fuel. Of course, they're going to
- 6:48Speaker 2: be fuel stations on the course with things like water
- 6:50Speaker 2: and gatorade, and then at one point, I believe there
- 6:53Speaker 2: are Gatorade endurance shells. But what's important is, yes you
- 6:57Speaker 2: can one hundred percent rely on the water and the Gatorade,
- 6:59Speaker 2: but it comes to actual fuel, whether that's shells or choose.
- 7:04Speaker 2: I have a girlfriend that runs with baby food coaches,
- 7:07Speaker 2: bring your own. It is so much better to be
- 7:10Speaker 2: over prepared than underprepared. Back in Chicago this year, I
- 7:15Speaker 2: ate five different cases of the Gatorade and Endurance gummy chews.
- 7:20Speaker 1: That's four gummies in each choose.
- 7:22Speaker 2: I have never felt better in a marathon, and that's
- 7:26Speaker 2: because I had a constant source of fuel for my muscles.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Now again, nothing new on race day, which means you
- 7:33Speaker 2: need to be running on that day with things that
- 7:37Speaker 2: you have used before. This is not the time to
- 7:40Speaker 2: get experimental. Next thing every runner should know going into
- 7:44Speaker 2: the marathon. Mile sixteen is the best. Okay, a little
- 7:47Speaker 2: bit biased. I've spent the last eight years of my
- 7:50Speaker 2: life living in New York City on the Upper East Side,
- 7:53Speaker 2: but the Queensboro Bridge is the only place on the
- 7:57Speaker 2: course where literally there are no spectators except for like
- 8:00Speaker 2: the few random people who've decided to walk up onto
- 8:04Speaker 2: the bridge and cheer.
- 8:05Speaker 1: So you're on the.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Queensboro it's absolute silence. It's like your one moment of
- 8:09Speaker 2: the entire twenty six point two miles, just to like
- 8:13Speaker 2: have a deep breath, and as you get toward the end,
- 8:16Speaker 2: you literally hear the war of the crowd coming off
- 8:19Speaker 2: of the bridge. Everyone is freaking out. It is so
- 8:22Speaker 2: exciting and it is just magic. Like there's no other
- 8:26Speaker 2: way to explain it, especially because for me, again an
- 8:29Speaker 2: up East sider, I'm coming home, but this is like
- 8:32Speaker 2: you are back in Manhattan and like the next ten
- 8:35Speaker 2: miles is just yours for the taking. So at this
- 8:38Speaker 2: point I would suggest to you soak in the energy,
- 8:41Speaker 2: really get excited. This is your chance to kind of
- 8:44Speaker 2: re up on those good vibes and to push forward
- 8:48Speaker 2: in running after what is yours that metal that finish. Okay,
- 8:54Speaker 2: next tip, have a meeting place for when you're done.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Just like any big concert or event or whatever, the
- 9:01Speaker 2: crowds in New York they're huge, which means that cell
- 9:05Speaker 2: phone service isn't exactly at a premium when you are
- 9:09Speaker 2: done with that overwhelming twenty six point two miles. The
- 9:13Speaker 2: good news is that New York Roadrunners is a really
- 9:15Speaker 2: great setup to the family meeting area or whatever special
- 9:20Speaker 2: term that they call it. And in that family meeting
- 9:22Speaker 2: area there are signs designated by letter of the alphabet,
- 9:26Speaker 2: so it's super easy to tell your friends and family
- 9:29Speaker 2: to meet you at your specific letter sign, reunite there,
- 9:32Speaker 2: and then find yourselves a bar that's my usual go
- 9:35Speaker 2: to or somewhere just to sit down, relax and enjoy
- 9:39Speaker 2: your achievement. Next New York City Marathon tip the day
- 9:44Speaker 2: after the race, there are two things you've got to do.
- 9:47Speaker 2: They offer really inexpensive metal engraving the day after the
- 9:51Speaker 2: marathon back in Central Park, and it's something that I've
- 9:53Speaker 2: done every year because it gets me just to move
- 9:56Speaker 2: my legs a little bit the day after the race.
- 9:58Speaker 2: I get a lot of questions about the best ways
- 10:01Speaker 2: to recover the next day after a marathon, and there
- 10:04Speaker 2: are two things that make sure to do without fail
- 10:06Speaker 2: every time. It is get up and walk around just
- 10:08Speaker 2: a little bit. You're not trying to be a hero,
- 10:10Speaker 2: You're just trying to move. And then, if you can
- 10:13Speaker 2: find it, get yourself in some Norma tech boots, the
- 10:16Speaker 2: compression boots. They have them at physical therapist's office. I'm
- 10:20Speaker 2: sure there's going to be a lot of different pop
- 10:21Speaker 2: up events around the area, So get yourself in some boots,
- 10:25Speaker 2: go walk to the Central Park, get your metal engraved,
- 10:28Speaker 2: and again.
- 10:28Speaker 1: Just soak in that awesome achievement.
- 10:31Speaker 2: And the second thing that you have to do is,
- 10:33Speaker 2: of course stop by the Tracksmith pop up. They do
- 10:36Speaker 2: it in all the cities where the Abbot World Majors happen.
- 10:39Speaker 2: They make custom posters with your marathon time stamped on
- 10:43Speaker 2: the bottom. If you follow me on social media, you
- 10:45Speaker 2: have seen mine on the wall. They are my favorite
- 10:48Speaker 2: favorite thing, So definitely check on over to their instagram.
- 10:50Speaker 2: It's at Tracksmith Running and you can find out where
- 10:54Speaker 2: they're going to be hanging out this week in New York.
- 10:56Speaker 2: And my last tip for you guys is just try
- 11:00Speaker 2: us the process. Whether you're running New York, whether you're
- 11:04Speaker 2: doing something else, whether you're gearing up for a five k,
- 11:07Speaker 2: a half marathon, whatever it is, understand that this close
- 11:11Speaker 2: to race day, as we're winding down, you have come
- 11:15Speaker 2: a long way on this journey. You have sacrificed so much,
- 11:20Speaker 2: You have given this so much of your heart and
- 11:22Speaker 2: your soul, and you are ready. Trust me, no amount
- 11:28Speaker 2: of nerves or anxiety or anything is going to change
- 11:31Speaker 2: that come race day. So just understand that now is
- 11:34Speaker 2: your time to soak it in, to go out there
- 11:37Speaker 2: to get what's yours and then twenty six point two
- 11:41Speaker 2: miles later you are forever a marathon or.
- 11:45Speaker 1: So go out there, guys. That's what I got for
- 11:47Speaker 1: you this week. Again.
- 11:48Speaker 2: If you have any questions, if there's anything I can
- 11:51Speaker 2: help you with, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Have a great race, and make sure to message me
- 11:56Speaker 2: after because another hurdle conquered.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Catch you guys next time.
