- 0:00Speaker 1: Somebody said, I believe Texas has won five out of
- 0:02six games against Georgia. I believe it's four out of five.
- 0:08I could be wrong about that. I was thinking they were, well,
- 0:11you know, I got it up.
- 0:11Speaker 2: In the team notes here. We both probably have it up. Yeah,
- 0:15you're right, four out of five.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Yeah yeah. I started saying, I got my broadcast heart
- 0:19right here, you have four out of five they won.
- 0:23Here's an interesting note they won. The first time they
- 0:26played was nineteen fifty seven, Daryl k. Royle's first game
- 0:30as head coach, and they played that at Grant Field
- 0:34in Atlanta, which is the home of Georgia Tech. That's
- 0:39where they played that game. That was coach Royal's first
- 0:43game as the Lawgorns head coach in nineteen fifty seven.
- 0:46They won that game there back in Austin in nineteen
- 0:49fifty eight. This is the first time Georgia has been
- 0:51to Austin since nineteen fifty eight, and the Logorns were
- 0:54actually down eight six in that ball game and ended
- 0:56up winning at thirteen eight in that one. Then, of course,
- 1:00the one time Georgia did win, it's the biggest of
- 1:03them all, was that Cotton Bowl in nineteen eighty three
- 1:06January of eighty four one, the Long Rune would have
- 1:08won the national championship. They won, They lost ten nine.
- 1:11There was the Craig Curry fumble punt set it up
- 1:14Georgia's winning touchdown. They won ten nine, and it set
- 1:19the states for Miami to win the national championship by
- 1:22beating Nebraska.
- 1:23Speaker 2: It also played in the Orange Bowl in nineteen forty nine.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right, yes, and that one is notable for
- 1:30the star of that game. His name was Tom Landry.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Tom Landry was played. He had come back from military
- 1:38service and it had played at Texas but hadn't really
- 1:42stood out. Of course, he was behind Bobby Lane as
- 1:46an athlete. But Tom Landry, he was from Mission Texas,
- 1:49had all kinds of skills in the secondary and was
- 1:53a two way player. But he played quarterback and he
- 1:55ran for I think one hundred and seven yards and
- 1:58scored one or two touchdowns. Texas beat a favored Georgia
- 2:02team forty one to twenty eight to win that one.
- 2:05So they did that was the Orange Bowl. Texas won
- 2:07that one then of course lost to them the Cotton
- 2:10Bowl to the Bulldogs. And as I mentioned January of
- 2:13eighty fourth the eighty three season, and then defeated Georgia
- 2:17the last meeting in the Sugar Bowl. So they've played
- 2:19them in the Cotton Bowl, the Orange Bowl, in the
- 2:21Sugar Bowl, and now they're going to play him here.
- 2:25Speaker 3: So next year when Texas goes to Georgia, it'll be
- 2:27the first time they've actually played in between the hedges.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Then since nineteen fifty eight when coach Royle was coaching.
- 2:33Speaker 2: So did they play at Bulldog Stadium?
- 2:35Speaker 1: Oh no, no, no, no, no, you're right. In fifty seven
- 2:37they played them in Atlanta. That's right. Fifty eight was
- 2:40at home, so it will be the first time to
- 2:42ever play in Athens. You're exactly right. What are the
- 2:45keys to beating Georgia? Let's hear from Longhorn's head coach,
- 2:48Teve Sarkisian. This is from our segment last night on
- 2:51Long Worn Weekly out of Pluckers going over the Georgia Bulldogs.
- 2:54And I'd done a broadcast chart preliminarily and then finding
- 2:58out later that some guys are bay the ones have
- 3:00it on chart, there's a couple who aren't there, and
- 3:03then find out from visiting Wiscott Howard their play by
- 3:06play voice of course Branson Robinson out they'd lost the
- 3:08other Robinson earlier. He said, so we're down two running backs,
- 3:11and I'm like, well, that sounds familiar being down two
- 3:14running backs early on. But they still have weapons. They
- 3:18still have Trevor Etn and of course they have Carson Beck.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Yeah, they do. This is a very dynamic offense.
- 3:24Speaker 3: You know, when you have a veteran quarterback like Carson Beck,
- 3:27he can make all the throws and so they really
- 3:30tax you because this is a really good offensive line.
- 3:33They've got a really good tight end and Oscar dept.
- 3:36But then they have elite speed on the perimeter with
- 3:38Arion Smith Dylan Bell, a kid who's really grown into
- 3:42kind of his role on the team. But then they
- 3:45believe in running the football too, and Dominic love it
- 3:47in the slot.
- 3:47Speaker 2: So they kind of tax you in a way similar
- 3:50do we do.
- 3:51Speaker 3: They can run it, they can hit you with the
- 3:53short intermediate RPOs, but yet they can throw.
- 3:56Speaker 2: It over your head.
- 3:57Speaker 3: You know, I watched a clip today of Carson Beck
- 3:59hitting Aaron Smith and the ball traveled sixty four yards
- 4:02in there. So our dbs have got to be on
- 4:05point in defending that deep ball, but you still have
- 4:07to control the line of scrimmagee. They got a lot
- 4:09of weapons.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I started to say, it does make it a
- 4:12challenge for your defensive accident when they can run the
- 4:14ball as well they in or hit people over the top,
- 4:16which is similar to what folks say about your guys.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Very similar systematically offensively, it'll look kind of similar.
- 4:22Speaker 2: I mean, they do some things different than we do.
- 4:24And you know, we were joking today.
- 4:26Speaker 3: As a staff, it's like, I think it's every play
- 4:29we motion, we're going to try to figure out does
- 4:31anybody motion more than we do, or ship or do something.
- 4:34Speaker 2: But this is a very good offensive football team.
- 4:36Speaker 1: How about your thoughts on this Georgia defense. I know
- 4:39they don't have Smile moundon this week, but Raylan Wilson's
- 4:42played a lot there stepping in a linebacker, and they've
- 4:44got other really good players.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah. I think the first thing about Georgia defense is
- 4:48the schematically and the brain trust that they have in
- 4:52that building.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Every day you talk about Kirby Smart and how regarded
- 4:56he as a defensive coach.
- 4:58Speaker 3: They have Will must Champ on staff, and they have
- 5:00Glenn Schuman as their defensive coordinator probably be a head
- 5:03coach next year. So that's a that's a pretty powerful
- 5:06brain trust that they have. Then to go with that,
- 5:09they've got some really good players, okay, and and any
- 5:12really good defense, especially in the SEC, starts up front.
- 5:15They've got a lot of veteran players on that defensive front.
- 5:19Mikel Williamsy back and the Nazir Stackhouse is back. And
- 5:22then from the back, I mean from the front, then
- 5:24you get to the back and Malachi Starks is an
- 5:27All American player at safety.
- 5:28Speaker 2: He kind of runs things for him.
- 5:30Speaker 3: So, uh, this is a heck of a challenge for
- 5:32us as a football team, you know, like I said,
- 5:34And then we haven't even talked about special teams. Right,
- 5:36they've probably got it, you know, a draft pick, NFL punter.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Uh, so they've.
- 5:40Speaker 3: Got all the things that you would think of Georgia
- 5:42football team would have. I mean, name the last time
- 5:44they didn't finish number one or number two in recruiting
- 5:46in the last decade. Right, and then they've they've won,
- 5:50and they've been in I think six of seven SEC
- 5:52championship games. They went to three consecutive National Championship games,
- 5:55and so they're used to the They're used to the
- 5:57stage or used to the environment. They've recruit players that
- 6:00want to play on this stage, and so it's gonna
- 6:03be a tech foot ball game. And if you can
- 6:04get you can get to be one of the one
- 6:05hundred and five thousand in there.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I think you're gonna be in store for a great one.
- 6:08Speaker 1: And somebody asked you today on the SEC teleconference if
- 6:11you in building your program kind of modeled after what
- 6:14Georgia was doing when you first came in, because Georgia
- 6:16was on top of the football world at the time,
- 6:18And you said, I wasn't so completely dialed into what
- 6:21Georgia had, but obviously what they do is a good
- 6:24model for college football.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Well, I think so.
- 6:26Speaker 3: And I think if you just look at Kirby's history
- 6:29in my history, you know, Kirby spent a lot of
- 6:31years with Nick Saban, and he was you know, all
- 6:34the way through their time at Alabama through that twenty
- 6:36fifteen season. Naturally, I spent three of five years with
- 6:40Nick Saban, And just looking at the roster, right, they've
- 6:43got big humans up front, they've got elite speed on
- 6:46the perimeter. They value quarterback play, they value running the football.
- 6:50They value stopping the run, special teams, matters, they call
- 6:54games aggressively, they'll fake punts, they'll do all those things,
- 6:57and then they found success in doing it, and then.
- 7:00Speaker 2: It kind of continues and continues and continue.
- 7:02Speaker 3: So we're probably a few years behind where they were
- 7:05at the just they've Kirby's been there longer than I've
- 7:08been here. But I like our trajectory looking at where
- 7:11they were as a program too. So that's why I say,
- 7:14I think this is one of those games that's going
- 7:16to be really fun for a fan to watch because
- 7:19you're going to see a ton of NFL players playing
- 7:22in an amazing stage at DKR, but also with schemes
- 7:27that are high level schemes. You know, this is an
- 7:29NFL driven offense and defense, just as we are, and
- 7:32when you do it at that high of a level
- 7:34with really talented players, it's a really cool thing to watch.
- 7:38Speaker 1: At SAR from last night's edition of Loghorn Weekly. Of course,
- 7:42we record the program on Wednesday evenings at Pluckers the
