- 0:08SPEAKER_03: Welcome back to another episode of Off the Grid.
- 0:12SPEAKER_03: We're at Trail Hero.
- 0:14SPEAKER_03: Um, so we're excited to be out here.
- 0:15SPEAKER_03: It's been a great event.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, we have an awesome guest with us today, Mr.
- 0:19SPEAKER_03: Casey Curry.
- 0:20SPEAKER_03: Uh fun times.
- 0:22SPEAKER_03: Uh, but yeah, before we get into like your the history and the racing and all that kind of stuff, like I know like y'all have family business and all that kind of stuff too, and you've won so many like prestigious races and stuff like that.
- 0:33SPEAKER_03: But would you say like the business and family aspect is harder or is the racing aspect of it all harder?
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is the one we want to know.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, I would say right now it gets it's unique because like the racing, as I've gotten older, the racing has not gotten easier, but I've my program has grown to be a very strong program.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: And sure, being that the business, you know, we've only been involved for six years and it's evolving and getting uh as it's growing, there's you know, growing pains that come along with uh, you know, with family members that also want to do different things and have a different opinion.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: So it's uh right now it's we're still in that like learning curve, even though the company's six years old, you know, we're trying to bring in new, you know, new ideas and new growth and new process to make it better.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: And obviously, when you're making change for the better, there's always hard days.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Which I feel like we're in the thick of that as well.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: But what so six years, that's you and your generation running it for six years?
- 1:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so 2020, basically in 2020, the company went from one company to two.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: It was my dad and my uncle.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Uh they divided it up like totally mutual.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Uh, but basically, my uncle John took on rock jock, the suspension portion, and then my dad did the axle portion.
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: And then with that, uh, myself and my brother work on the axle side, and then my two cousins work on the uh suspension side.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: But totally, they're no longer connected, connected, so yeah, okay, separate separate buildings, separate businesses, separate separate bank accounts, everything.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And I think until I got to know you guys more from being out at these events, I wouldn't have known that.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: I thought it would have been the same.
- 2:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I'm sure that made working with family a little easier, too, not having all of y'all's brains in one room.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: Right, yeah, I don't know how y'all do it.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: It's funny.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: The uh a lot of event sessions.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: That was that right.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: It's funny because that was one of my grandpa's uh we didn't really know about it too much until we got older, but one of my grandpa's deals was there was no third generation working for Curry, there was no handouts, there was no freebie.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: So with that, it you know, we never had the opportunity to even really work at Curry other than just passion and being around it, but never really worked there.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: All of us had careers and jobs in other places.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: I love that though.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: It's so cool.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Yes, I was gonna say, and I think that was one of my questions.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: I don't have my list because my phone is not there, but um one of the things was is you inherited a respected name, as did we, which was nice, obviously, us being true third generation.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: But what did you have to accomplish before you felt like you had truly earned your place?
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: So, like what did you guys do beforehand?
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: Did y'all all do something different?
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so well, technically I race for a living.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: So like I felt very I'm the oldest grandchild.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Um, it's crazy.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of weird things that happen in life, but um, my grandpa actually helped me buy a building that was two buildings down from Curry Enterprises.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Um shoot over like almost 12 to 15 years ago.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: He helped me buy a building that my race program is in.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: But it's crazy because as he after he passed away and then the world changed that we went to work at Curry, it was like part of me felt there were signs that he knew something was ever gonna happen, right?
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: Because in California, with the way you know prices always increased, like if I wasn't if I was renting and not owning the building that I was my race program is in, I would have been in 2020, I for sure would have been 20, 30 miles away to be somewhere cheaper.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: And it's like as things happen for a reason, here I am, like the split.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: My brother was actually working for me full-time at that time.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: And then um, so literally, you know, that transition was easy because we went from one building to two buildings down.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: And uh it's kind of crazy, but yeah, around that, like my brother, yeah, he went, he has like his master's, he's got two degrees.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: You know, my cousins all went and are engineers and uh like cousin Brandon was a mechanical engineer or civil engineer, mechanical engineer, and then my cousin was an accountant.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: We everyone had total normal jobs.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: That's so cool.
- 4:28SPEAKER_03: Like y'all were y'all went and made a name for yourselves and a career for yourselves before you came into like the family business.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Well, and then brought their skill sets back into the family business.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think everyone did.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: I also didn't realize that he had a brother, I don't think.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Have you been out here?
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: No, he like uh he got married in 2020 and had a baby in 2023, so he's focusing on being a dad.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, cool.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: So and you are still close, yeah.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: He still works every day.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Okay, cool.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: So how do you juggle like Curry Enterprises and your race program?
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: So technically a lot.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: I work a lot, but uh the actual race program I've uh there's three guys, four guys full-time uh that work on my race program.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: But my race program now is actually six hours away from my where I live.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: So to create the separation, it worked out with a crew chief that I had um that he manages it all basically six hours away.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: So I manage all the paperwork, all the financials, and he runs the race shop like with the employees there.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Um and then basically at Curry, I'm just doing that day to day.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: So but at night and on the phone, yeah, I'm on the pedal watch.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: How busy because I know how busy we are with just the one.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: So I mean I can't imagine what I'm gonna do.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: I can imagine having a full-fledged race program too.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: So I'll leave Friday from here, go to a race.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: My kids are gonna race Friday, Saturday, Sunday, then wake up, get home Sunday to Monday.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: I have to be in Rubicon, seven-hour drive.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Rubicon, drive back Wednesday night, Thursday, leave for Mexico, be at Mexico Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: But so your kids though, they're they're racing now, right?
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: They are.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: So they I tried really hard not to get them to race.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: And uh they just love it.
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: I don't like it's funny.
- 6:11SPEAKER_01: There was a point in time when they were from about five until 10, they had no interest, and uh we fully went down the sports out, you know, just let them be total normal kids, and now it's I don't know what happened, but they are demons and all they want to do is drive.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: And we just did the Rubicon two weeks ago, and I I think I drove a half mile out of 12 miles, and he's 12.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: That's hilarious.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Well, okay, so I want to back up and tell us a little bit about what got you into the racing.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Because I mean, I feel like for me, at least when I met you, you were already an established in that industry.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: But like, what got you to that point?
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Not the business side, the racing side.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: So for racing, I feel like I'm the perfect combination of like my dad and all my uncles.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: Like, my grandpa was the same way.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: My grandpa raced, he liked off-road, he liked hot rods, he liked muscle cars.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Um, and then he did it all.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: And then, like, if you look at the family dynamic, like my dad is a full-blown racer.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: He loves racing, he loves going fast.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: He's always raced trucks, like he raced sportsmen um and stock full in the desert.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: He just always loved racing.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: And then my uncle John always loved rocks and loved rock crawling and doing all the like whether he's competing or whether he was just doing it for fun, he always loved being in the rocks.
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: And then my uncle Charlie, um, another uncle that uh was totally into cars, muscle cars, and always had like a passion for muscle cars and like not sure why, but I think from hanging out like with them all so much.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: And then as I was the oldest grandchild, my grandpa retired the year I was born.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: So, like from the time I was basically born, my dad calls him an ambassador.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: He re stopped working and then went on the road full time for Curry Enterprise, meaning all he did for Curry was get in his motorhome or the Curry Motorhome and drive to events and be the face.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: Yep, go talk to customers.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: I remember that from your um because you did the speech in honor of him at the Hall of Fame when he when his award, I remember some of those facts that you shared, and that was cool because I feel like we we don't have that part.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: And so that I feel like it was really cool to like that that's what he chose to do, and that you guys got a lot of time with him doing that then.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because my dad and uncles like well, people don't realize they always think like technically my grandpa started the company, but in reality, the company only had two or three employees when my dad and uncles took it over.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: So from there they they grew it, they grew it.
- 8:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they it was really a I mean, nothing because my grandpa worked at a Taylor Dunn Industrial Carts, which is where the rear-end business came from.
- 8:37SPEAKER_01: Because to make more money, he would sell rear ends to Taylor Dunn.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: And uh from that though, anyways, my when he retired, he uh yeah, technically my dad and my uncles are the one that built curry to what it is, like it was really so they were fairly young when they kind of took over the business, huh?
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, they never from they never did anything else from the time they were like 12 years old on.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: They that was it, none of them went to college.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: My dad actually went to college for a little bit, but basically all of them just worked.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so yeah, pretty wild.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: That's insane.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it is because I didn't know that either.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: I thought it was more I mean I technically all are third generation, but I thought it was a little bit more kind of how ours is, and it's not you know, really more second gen as that big business side of it.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, my like my it's funny because my grandpa, I mean, in reality, and this might be the same as your family.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: They're to them, it was never about the money, it was about the passion of what they did.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Like they truly just love what they do, right?
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: Like all my uncles, even my grandpa, like everything they did was like it's just because they love doing it and they love doing what they're friends, right?
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: So you don't sell your friends junk because then they're gonna be complaining to you the whole time.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, that was my grandpa's motto, right?
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: It was, you know, like treat everyone like a friend, because in reality, when you're out here, the worst thing you want to do is have somebody broken down.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: So he he uh yeah, I think with that, my dad and uncles just they just did what they love.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Because now I look at them like, dang, you could have grown this company so much bigger if you would have started 20 years ago and hustled and invested more.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: And but it's like you look at it and they're like, that's not what we that was never their plan, right?
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: We're is that sound like us or what?
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: Oh my gosh, we just so many of the things that we know now, and they're like, Yeah, but if we knew the stuff that we knew now, who knows what skydger would have been because it wouldn't have been because we were enthusiasts when we started it.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean it started.
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: I mean, Mama and Papa started it because they were going mud digging on the weekends in the swamp, right?
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: So they just built what they needed to do, uh, go further out or not get stuck as much.
- 10:32SPEAKER_03: And then it just kind of it delved out of that.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: But us as third gen, we're like, why didn't you do this?
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: This we need to be doing this, this, this, this.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: And they we do have to advance and we do have to progress.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: But um, I feel like sometimes we want it to be more, more, more, more, more.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: And so I feel like that is our biggest push-pool as third gen.
- 10:51SPEAKER_03: Well, and sometimes it's hard, like in the everyday grind of trying to build something better, to just like take a breath and be so thankful for like the current moment.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm not good at that.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, me neither.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: That's what I will say that it I mean, you guys are probably the same way, but coming to events is where it's a good reset.
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Yes, you understand that we are doing it because you love it.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: We do love seeing product out here, we love seeing friends.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: It's worth the grind.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: It is worth the grind.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: It is fun.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, to me, this is the only if if I was at the office every day, I would I would be that person that would drive the thing into the ground just from the work aspect.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: I love to work and I'm very addicted to working, which is a very big problem for some people, but uh that problem, this is where you come home and get that fresh idea and just breath of fresh air for not hustling because you're just like you're saying, I'd outwork everybody because uh just because I love it so much.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:40SPEAKER_03: Well, it's like every time we leave one of these events, we're motivated, like for you for marketing things or even like an RD, like, well, if we tweak this bracket here and move this arm here, you know, like it just brings all those ideas when you when you come out here.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Well, and I think too, our location is hard being where we are because we really have to like make the effort to get to places.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: And I feel like so for us, sometimes these events are so vital because I feel like we crave just the industry conversation that yeah, I mean you can have that, but we only get it a handful of times a year.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and uh, I think it's really important to be here um at any event that's at this level with these groups of people and like the event today and just being with that level of people in business and enthusiasts.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: Um, I feel like for us is we have to do it.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: And I think first gen struggles because he's like, we need to be working, like, yeah.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: But remember, this is what you built it off of.
- 12:32SPEAKER_03: He calls these all expenses paid vacations.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then like if you realize, like nobody really rests here.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: Like, we get Dell's having a reset, but we're working the whole time too, you know.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Like right now, we're not just like hanging out or doing something productive.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: I wish I could go play every every day.
- 12:47SPEAKER_03: We hear the same thing.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: That's the family aspect of it.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: I hear it too.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: I hear that too.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: And let me just tell you, Evan is way better at biting his tongue than I am.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Okay, that's he gets that from his dad.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: They're very good at that, and just being able to take it and chill with it, and I'm like pop right back, and that always ends well.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Now, does everyone how many how many family members are actually working?
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so right now I think we have eight full family as far as third generation, there's one, two, three, four, five of us.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: Um over in the past, in the past, more have come and went, but um, I feel like we're the solid five.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we we kind of But Evan and I are the ones I feel like who were in the in a different place with the bit like we wouldn't actually like grow the company and we're enthusiasts of the industry, yeah, where the others aren't.
- 13:36SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, uh we kind of grew up where it was like, yes, uh just like come work and learn the business.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: You know, we didn't we had a very different upbringing than y'all did of like go do your own thing, you know, figure out your life and then come back.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we that was totally opposite of of yours.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, of mine for sure.
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: I yeah, you did, you owned your own business.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: I did, but also because I I played sports early all my life and I never I mean, my mom worked at Skyjacker.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: I got to do some cool things here and there, but it was never like a part of anything that was I was gonna do, and then business was just always what I loved, but not necessarily Skyjacker until I came.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: It's been almost 10 years.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: And like I think at eight and a half or something.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: And so, but very quickly do you become that because the industry and then these places and these people, it's very it was very easy to get wrapped up in.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: It did not take much.
- 14:28SPEAKER_03: Um well, like we they talked about last night at the um Rock Motor Sports Hall of Fame.
- 14:33SPEAKER_03: It's like it's one big family here, and when you experience that, it's so like you just gravitate towards it.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I agree.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Um, okay, so one of my questions for somebody of your caliber, business-wise, and and in the racing and different relationships that you have.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Um obviously you've probably broken plenty of things in racing, you probably had some failures here and there, but business, personal racing, like what's taught you the most and um what you've like learned from that, whether it be racing or business.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: I would say honestly, just I mean, treating every every relationship because in reality, when things go wrong, right?
- 15:11SPEAKER_01: It's all there's people behind every product.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: Uh I think it's truly having understanding of saying the right thing, doing the right thing.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, when it comes to having issues, um, you know, we all have issues, right?
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: There's there's problems everywhere.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: Um, and whether it's racing, career enterprises, I mean, it kind of goes back to the same thing of really just, you know, first buying my tongue because I'm you know, if it's like one of those always I always tell myself, the day I retire, everybody that ever, you know, talk crap, I gonna screen grab and then I'm just gonna put up you know on all my people on a show.
- 15:41SPEAKER_01: I'm like, this is what I had to deal with.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: But no, just uh but no, the I think that you know when it comes to all that stuff, it's just truly having understanding of problems happen, mistakes happen, things happen.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: It's just trying to make a you know a resolution to understanding why.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: And you know, really there's it's there's just so many people in this industry that that care, right?
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: I I mean working with brands and and being around partners that truly care is kind of where we're at in life.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: And I think over the past five or six years with my race program, I've been able to work with some really high caliber companies that make it where truly we have great product and when there's problems, we just gotta figure it out.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I I think that we've as we've had our ambassador program or different things that we've grown.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, I know yours is gonna be in a different place, but having a family um of your caliber and racing and things like that with your credentials, uh it's I feel like it would be hard to have a genuine to know when people are being genuine with you or not, or if they just want to be around you for the name or the cloud of the this or the that.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: And has that been kind of hard to navigate?
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: Or as you've gotten older, it's been easier.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: I think as I get older, I like to me, I don't, you know, we live in a small bubble.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: We're very blessed to have, you know, cousins and uncles.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: And we go to these events, you know, we try to be in places where we wheel with a small group to make it fun for ourselves.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: And you know, we want to showcase our product and how it works and we utilize it, and we're not just here at the you know, at the show and and putting our stuff on display the entire week.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: We're driving, right?
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: That's yeah.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: Everywhere we go, we want to showcase it.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: But I think that's you know, doing all that, I not that like to me, I don't feel like I have a name.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: To me, I just want to hang out and talk cheap.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: So, you know, if people want to come up and hang out and talk, I got you know, I'll do it all I can.
- 17:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, but at the same time I say that, and we're also in a small bubble sometimes, so we don't yeah, we don't really go where the big crowds are, yeah.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: So but which I think has probably been good for you guys as a family and brand.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think it makes it fun.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: I well, I mean, just like my dad and uncles have always done, right?
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: They always just like to drive jeeps, that's what they want to do.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: When we're at Jeep events, they they just want to drive, you know, they'll go work the event to talk and talk to customers and stuff like that.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: And uh, you know, for myself, I would like, I mean, I'll sit in the booth a little bit, but you know, we have a great team of people that do that for us.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: And you know, I don't I also like giving people the opportunity to grow and understand that they can be the customer service guys.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I like that.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: I know one time when we had talked in the past, I think it was last year, and we were lining up and we were talking about um employees and things like that, and long-term employees, and you laughed about like sometimes we're like, dude, just go home, take a vacation, and because y'all have really great employees, and that's something that that we have.
- 18:19SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I think we were catching up at CEMO, we were talking about like ERP system and stuff, and we were uh, you know, we have a lot of like well, we have two 40-year employees, a bunch of 30s, and some 20s, and y'all you said y'all are kind of in that same scenario.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's pretty unreal.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: And I feel like that when people hear that, they're like, Whoa, that just does not happen anymore.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: Um, and especially nowadays with everybody who gets you know, so many people get bought up here and there, which you know, everybody has their reasons for having to do that.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: But I feel like when you can find the people that want to stay and love their industry, it's really special to have that.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it really is.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: And I think that you know, the industry's had some really big hits because of you know a lot of these companies getting purchased, and it makes it tough because the younger generation is having less and less opportunity when you know these powerhouses come in and you think it's gonna change the industry, and then come to find out three years later they're selling the companies back for pennies on the dollar, and now all the good people that were at those brands are gone, and you know what was this core dominant group is is shuffling.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: So it's that is definitely interesting.
- 19:23SPEAKER_03: Well, it's tough, but that's why I mean we appreciate it you and y'all's relationship too, just just because there's it's rare now in this industry to have like family-owned and operated businesses, like it's becoming a smaller and smaller portion of our industry.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: And like I just love uh like the PSC guys, y'all, like being the rock jock guys, like everybody just the families out there just like making it happen.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, love it as well.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: Um, okay, I have a funny question.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: I feel like you're a funny guy.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: If your family who work with you had to like, let me see, what had uh if they had to give you a performance review, what would be for what would what would that be if they had to if they have to rate your performance?
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Obviously, it sounds like you're a really hard dedicated worker, so the working aspect is good, but I'm sure right now I'm on a paid vacation.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: So I mean we're gonna get down and dirty right now today.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: So now you're gonna be able to get it.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm not yeah, right now we're probably at C plus because dinner's paid for and we're in we're in Utah and the weather's nice and you're posting all these photos and it's beautiful.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: Post the rain pictures instead.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: We see all these friends there and they're hanging out.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: That's funny.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: It's pretty funny.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Did you have any?
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: I know that you probably as far as your wrestling program goes, like what's your your next goal there?
- 20:45SPEAKER_03: Good question.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: So I would say the ultimate goal for where I'm at in my life is I've been uh besides King of the Hammers, it's the only race in the world that I haven't won.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: And uh so I would like to win that event.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Um, but ultimately is to tie the race program into the Jeep, the Jeep race program to evolve in a curry enterprises, showcasing all the products that we utilize.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: Racing are the same products we use, jeeping, and just really trying to tie that.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: There's a connection there that uh not a lot of people do.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: And for me, it's truly trying to show the brands that are, you know, not only do they race, but the same technology, engineering, you know, and all of their process and planning can be utilized utilized on Jeeps, right?
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I feel that my whole thing right now is to really showcase more of that and try to get into a con an idea of having people trust all these brands because not only are they on race cars, but the same product can be on a Jeep.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: And you know, I really want, I think the aftermarket is such a great opportunity for you know this industry to grow that whatever I can do to help showcase it to more cheap enthusiasts that are not racers, yeah, are not off roaders that need to become off roaders.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it's tying it all together.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: That's awesome.
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's great.
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: Um, we were JT with.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Nemesis was introducing me to some people who were trying to put some events on for like this next generation of people.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Cause like you said earlier on, that that next generation, they're not really getting like what we got or what you and Evan got.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: And so it's like trying to pull back in that generation to have the same love and passion for it.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: So I really like that because you have a lot of people who love the racing side of it.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: And they're like, Oh, I can't do both, but really you can.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: And your family does, I think, prove that and show that.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: So I'll I'll be sharing that on.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: That'll be exciting to see.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: If you absolutely get that definitely, definitely trying to get you know, the ultimate goal is to get more people to come out here and go off-roading, right?
- 22:38SPEAKER_01: That I mean, I love to see new new enthusiasts coming out, and just like anything, right?
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: You gotta get them not to buy junk.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: Like there's you know, everything is flooded with just garbage, and you're you know, yeah, stay away, stay on path, and try to utilize good products.
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: Well, and it's so fun to like to have first timers come out with you.
- 22:58SPEAKER_03: Like last year, Austin was one of our cousins came out here.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: This was his first Jeep event.
- 23:04SPEAKER_03: And he was like, whoa, it's on the way.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: Did he?
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: It happened.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's bad.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: It is bad.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: He was like me, that that's my little brother.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: He's six foot whatever, so he's not my little brother, but he played sports too, and so he never really like had the chance to get out here because his summers were tied up, yeah.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: Um, and his fall breaks were tied up or or whatever.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: And so he got to come because Armand was overseas because every few years he goes overseas, he's in the military, and so he came to help me video and get content, and it's like, oh man.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, he fell in love.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he fell in love and literally on the way home was like calling his wife.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: He's like, I found a gladiator, I'm gonna bite.
- 23:42SPEAKER_00: Like the next week went and bought it.
- 23:44SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: And so um, it'll do it to you.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: It did it to me and Joe.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: It took me two years and we had a Jeep.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so now Daisy's out here, we had to have her.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, it is fun.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: We love I love that.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Oh, we like for me and I love going, it's just fun being around good people.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: Like every you guys, every year we get to go on all these Jeep runs, get to hang out with people you don't see very often.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: A lot of people live all over the place, but it's a good reset to come here and see everyone and see all the families and everyone.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and then adding the Rock Motorsports Hall of Fame to the event to get to do that at the same time, which is really good for us, you know, logistically to have it at the same place.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: Um, so that's been really fun because again, Evan knows a lot more of that history, but I'm learning a ton about people that some names I didn't even know yet.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: Like last night I didn't know a ton of the Living Legends um and any of their backstory.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: So it was cool to get to see that.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: And obviously your family is a big part of those as well.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: But um the the Ormhoff and the Rock Mettersports Hall of Fame.
- 24:44SPEAKER_00: And so um it's just been good to get to know I love the family history things, and so especially someone whose uh family history is similar to ours.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: Um how many so how many years are y'all total?
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: Not since y'all broke 59, okay.
- 24:59SPEAKER_01: So or no, well no it was in 59.
- 25:01SPEAKER_01: It'll be six it'll be sixty or seventy years.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, what year did you guys start?
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: 74.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: So we just had our 50.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: Okay, so yeah, well we had 60.
- 25:16SPEAKER_03: And what years ago, it's 26, so 52 years of business now.
- 25:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: And so um that's a long time.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: It's a lot of changes in that time.
- 25:28SPEAKER_00: But it's a lot of changes in business.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Like they started in mail order, then they went to wholesale and that became a thing, and now post-COVID, we have like four different versions and lanes of business the direct, dealer, yeah, you know, wholesale, all the e-commerce.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's like the people who used to run the one side of the business, it takes so many more sides.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: Because I mean when COVID happened, our we had a website, but it was kind of just set up for like information and stuff.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: And all of a sudden we went from like 20 small packages a day to like 300.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: So it's like, oh, yeah.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: We weren't set up for it.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: I mean, it took a year.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: And it's things that and that's where um of like the smaller family business side, at least for our family.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: We're in in those situations we're more reactive than like getting ready, like being proactive or reactive.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: And so it took a solid year to catch up to actually be able to support that in the back and and on the data on the data side as well.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: But so it's like once we got there, I was like, Oh, thank god, now we just gotta keep that up because it was just like overnight, you just never know.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: Well, and with so many powers to be, we kind of it takes a while to get to a decision on some the bigger stuff.
- 26:42SPEAKER_03: So normally we're a little slow.
- 26:44SPEAKER_03: And a few arguments on that.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we all have those.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: We all have those.
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: So, but yeah, we same type of deal though.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Like my dad went through the whole wholesale deal where they only didn't really I mean they focus on wholesale and then focus on the bigger distribution channels, and then the website they were uh shoot only maybe two years before we started.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: They even did anything on the two or three years before, and that was it before the web.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: Wow, so and I feel like I mean, is that probably still is one of your biggest our website is our biggest like you're not gonna be able to get our customer?
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: We always it's funny.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: Ours as well.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: My IT guys, you know, that does on my website.
- 27:22SPEAKER_01: He's like, I'm your biggest customer.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: Ours too, which thank God for our our IT guy.
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: He is the best.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, same.
- 27:29SPEAKER_01: I same.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh huh.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: Because you don't realize until something like that happens how important the data side is, and then all of a sudden you can't run, you can't sell anything anywhere without the data.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: The images, the thing, you know, all the things.
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: And so um, yeah, we're blessed to have that as well.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: Thank God.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: Mike, thank you.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Um well, I think for me, the next question I have is events.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: What are like the top five events that you absolutely will not budge on?
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: Uh love King of the Hammers.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: Okay, I think it's one of the best events of the year for to get that many people into one uh area uh for like fan base.
- 28:11SPEAKER_01: Um, I think that's a great one.
- 28:12SPEAKER_01: Love Moab, won't miss Moab.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: I even if the event went away, I'd still go to Moeb once a year.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: I just think I love the community aspect of being in you know Moeb.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: Uh I love Trail Hero.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: I think this is another one.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: I think just this area is beautiful.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: I think the driving, the the skill set, you have to have a really good Jeep and can do a lot here.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: Um let's see, where else is there?
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: What other ones?
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: Um, I love Rubicon.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: I think it's fun to go to Rubicon.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: It's all West Coast stuff, by the way.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: The Rubicon is another like iconic.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: It's not hard like anything we did today, kind of thing.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's just more of a thing of beauty, and you're in the middle of nowhere.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: We go camp.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: Actually, I just flew on a helicopter last time.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: Different story.
- 28:56SPEAKER_01: Uh, but normally we camp, and um yeah, it it's just fun, and it's just the same type of deal.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: Like, well, up until Starlink happened, there used to be no cell phone service.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: So, like you literally were you go for three, four days, and there's no you might as well just put your phone in the car because there's no cell phone service.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, I think all those events are they're all good events.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: It's funny.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm a big Jeep guy.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: I do have a 67 Camaro, and uh I like the Hot Rod Power Tour.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: It's like a five-day car event that travel like every year they go to different cities.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Um, so I try to do that every year as well to put a couple thousand miles on my car in a week.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I like that as well.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: Well, you got anything else before I ask him our last question?
- 29:39SPEAKER_03: Not oh, you just did uh so you have like what's the Jeep Jamboree thing you just did?
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: Like the Casey Curry experience.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: Uh the Casey Curry experience?
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: So what was that?
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Uh so worked with uh Jeep Jamber USA, and he's like, What do you want to do?
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: And I was like, something over the top.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: I'm like, dude, we should drive the Rubicon, no camping.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: But problem is like for the most the average Jeeper, it's like you can't get through it in one day.
- 30:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we'll we'll get halfway, we'll have the helicopter land, pick us all up, and take us to like the nicest resort in Lake Tahoe, and then we'll stay at that resort, Edgewood Resort, and then I want to play golf.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: So we we got then we'll so the next day we'll take off.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: Well, everyone can kind of just hang out and have a day off, and then we'll hang out.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: So we played golf, went out to a nice dinner at the resort, and then seven in the morning the next day, we flew back in the helicopter down to our jeeps, got in the jeeps, drove them out the trail, and drove home.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: That's the way to do it, right?
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: I was like, how do I do?
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: We just want to do things differently and like experience it differently and like with the right group of people, and like you know, with Jeep Jumper USA, they have such a unique crowd with you know, complete new newbies to people that are more experienced, to people that have more money, and it's fun to be able to show all the experiences and like just do things that can you know make it fun for everybody.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: That's fun.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: Did you ever think that you would ever get to put an event on like that?
- 31:03SPEAKER_01: No, it is crazy.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's still funny because you're like the resort alone is insane, it's the most gorgeous resort like in Lake Tahoe on the water golf course.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: It's like one of the best-rated golf courses, and like it's sold out year-round.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: So, like, it's not like we're going somewhere that you can get in.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: You can just get in, sure.
- 31:20SPEAKER_01: The golf course sells out all summer long.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: It's insane, and uh yeah, it was super cool.
- 31:24SPEAKER_01: That's awesome, but that's really cool for the people who got to be a part of that, and then uh seven other jeep owners, and like with that, you know, for us it's an opportunity to go and hang out and like figure out what we can do to make their jeeps better, what to make them drive better, how do we make it more fun, and just give them an experience on the rocks as well.
- 31:42SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: So it's good.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: Anything else?
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: To to wrap it up, I want to know what's your biggest piece of advice is.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: I think you kind of answered it a little bit earlier, but if you could tell if you could tell anybody, okay, let's change it up because I feel like treating people kindly and working hard is gonna be probably what you say, just off past conversation.
- 32:02SPEAKER_00: So let's go with you're a new person in the industry, you have no idea where to start.
- 32:07SPEAKER_00: I know you come across those people all the time.
- 32:09SPEAKER_00: What's your biggest advice you give to them if they want to get into jeeping?
- 32:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, in the industry or just jeeping as far as going driving jeeps, just jeeping as an enthusiast.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: I just think you need to be around the right people.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: I think it's very easy uh to go down the wrong path and have a Jeep that's very miserable to drive, um, that you end up selling it because it's it's dangerous.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: I don't want my wife's in the car, you know, I can't have my kids in the car.
- 32:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: And I feel that like my biggest thing is like, look, I have a wife that does nothing in this industry at all.
- 32:41SPEAKER_01: She's just a great wife and a stay-at-home mom.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: And you know, I have two young boys, and like if I can't have her get in anything that I own and drive 75 miles an hour down the highway safely at, you know, and feel totally comfortable.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: If if she can't do that, then I'm not building it.
- 32:58SPEAKER_01: And if that rate, then I don't want anyone else to build it.
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and that's something that I feel that we get a bad rap for as far as off-road goes.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: There are shops out there that you literally look at these bills and you're going, you spent how much?
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: And you're like, it's you're it's miserable.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: And I, you know, for me, I think you need to be around good people and good shops to make it so that you can have a great experience and keep wanting to come back.
- 33:20SPEAKER_00: Well, where do people find that?
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: Because I mean, that's hard right now, if like, especially in the world of the internet, which is has kind of been around obviously for a long time, but like it's even worse now than ever.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: But there's information everywhere, like so much information, information overload.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: If it wouldn't have been for me getting into this with the family and the connections that I already had, I would not have known where to start.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: So, like, where do you where would you even go?
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: Honestly, I it it's tough.
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: Like, there's not shops everywhere.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: Um, but I mean, I mean, even my like I would say my sales guys, you know, they kind of keep track of shops around the country that if you call with some tech questions that we try to refer you to a shop that we've worked with in the past and we feel have a you know a good a good reputation in the industry.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: Um, but it is tough.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: But I mean, once again, it's like you know, I feel blessed to have good sales guys that kind of point people in the right direction.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I I I love your point though about like I'm not gonna build anything, I don't feel safe with my wife jumping in.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: Because that's one thing Paw Paw always made a goal was like because suspension, I mean, if you don't do that right, that's dangerous.
- 34:27SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: So it's like there's a lot of liability there, and he was always if I can't hand the keys to my wife or my daughter, and I don't feel 100% at peace and comfortable with it, then it was not good enough.
- 34:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and so that's how like uh we've always strived since then to like be sure like my LJ just feel 100% confident somewhere could hop in it and go to the mall and shop, you know.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: Like if if that's not our standard, then it's not good enough.
- 34:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'd agree.
- 34:55SPEAKER_03: That is good for sure, and I am that way.
- 34:58SPEAKER_03: And there's but there's a lot of companies too, like yard it's hard to decipher um the good versus the bad because there are some companies that they're not they don't care about like the road manners or how safe it is.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: It's just well and I think sometimes people get a little confused of like wanting a rock crawler versus wanting a Jeep that you can like drive comfortably.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: Like we want to be able to drive on the trail and then drive it into town and through town.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: And I feel like a lot of people that I talked to have had to rebuild, they were getting advice building like a crawler, but then they couldn't drive it.
- 35:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:33SPEAKER_00: Like on the on the road, and so then they had they spent all that money for things that weren't necessarily needed, overbuilt really, for what they were actually wanting to do.
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they weren't going to hammers and doing stuff, they were just doing like trails here in Moab or in Arkansas, or you know, they're smaller things, and so having to like rebuild and had wasted a lot of money and time.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: But well, that's yeah, even for me, that's why I try to have I always try to drive jeeps wherever I go, and I have rock crawlers and stuff for racing and hammers and stuff, but try to showcase that you don't have to come out here and get body damage except I got body damage yesterday.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: So I did hit my body yesterday, so uh and that was a new Jeep, wasn't it?
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: Well, it's basically now I gotta go back and fix it, but that's what happens when it rains in Utah.
- 36:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, it does.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: It was slippery yesterday.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: That was a first, so it is good.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you for coming and joining us on our podcast.
- 36:28SPEAKER_00: I know that um it's you're really busy when you get at these places, so we appreciate you taking the time to come do it.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for sure.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: All good, thank you guys.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, appreciate it.
