- 0:00Speaker 1: Oh, it's that time of year. Bertol Berto filling in
- 0:02Speaker 1: for Vic and Mos today. We will be out at
- 0:04Speaker 1: Broncos camp for the first time tomorrow. But the man
- 0:07Speaker 1: who's been there already, of course, he has joins us
- 0:09Speaker 1: on the Ramos Law hotline car accident. He need Ramos
- 0:12Speaker 1: Law medical doctor and attorney Ramas Law dot com. It
- 0:15Speaker 1: is Jeff Lagwall of ESPN dot com.
- 0:17Speaker 2: What's up, Leggy Ornim Fellas?
- 0:20Speaker 3: What year is this? What number of training camp is
- 0:24Speaker 3: this for you?
- 0:26Speaker 1: Uh?
- 0:26Speaker 4: For the Broncos. I believe it's twenty two and I
- 0:30Speaker 4: think it's forty overall.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Damn, forty is a lot so much? How how much
- 0:37Speaker 3: does it changed?
- 0:38Speaker 2: How much?
- 0:38Speaker 3: I mean, listen, it's it's compared just in the last
- 0:41Speaker 3: I mean it's changed the last ten years. But how
- 0:43Speaker 3: much of it has changed in the last thirty years?
- 0:45Speaker 3: Training camp in the NFL.
- 0:47Speaker 4: I'm probably still wearing the same shirt, have a lot
- 0:52Speaker 4: I got a lot less hair and they hit a
- 0:54Speaker 4: lot less.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I think that would be too.
- 0:57Speaker 1: So like you head into a training camp and every
- 1:00Speaker 1: training camp's kind of got a theme.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Last year obviously it was the quarterbacks and bone Nicks
- 1:05Speaker 1: is the rookie and he's battling for the job. What
- 1:07Speaker 1: do you see as the theme this year heading into camp?
- 1:11Speaker 4: Well, I think the theme is you don't really have
- 1:13Speaker 4: a theme other than you know, this team retained more
- 1:17Speaker 4: players from last season than any other team in the league,
- 1:20Speaker 4: and I think that's the I think they're basically saying
- 1:23Speaker 4: they're in a position made the playoffs, ready to see
- 1:27Speaker 4: if they can push farther with roughly the same roster.
- 1:31Speaker 4: And when they chose to make improvements on a wild
- 1:35Speaker 4: card team, they went right at the defense, which was
- 1:39Speaker 4: already good. So those are the things I think that
- 1:42Speaker 4: stick out to me.
- 1:44Speaker 2: And look, they're not doing much.
- 1:45Speaker 4: I mean this looks like a lot like mini camp
- 1:47Speaker 4: right now as they ramp it up. But when you
- 1:51Speaker 4: see the starting eleven on defense on the field just
- 1:57Speaker 4: moving in drills, Uh, it's an impressive group. If if
- 2:02Speaker 4: it stays healthy, Uh, they're gonna be a problem for people.
- 2:06Speaker 3: How much is this offense going to look the same
- 2:08Speaker 3: or look different compared to I mean, Sean Payton talked
- 2:10Speaker 3: about the install and how long it's going to take
- 2:13Speaker 3: and how but how how different do you think the
- 2:16Speaker 3: offense is going to look this season compared to last well.
- 2:20Speaker 4: You know, they know, I think they want Evan Ingram
- 2:23Speaker 4: involved and involved a lot at tight end. I think
- 2:26Speaker 4: they'd like to open up that part of the offense.
- 2:30Speaker 4: They've that group has been you know, the least productive
- 2:35Speaker 4: tight end group in the league and back to back
- 2:38Speaker 4: seasons and for this offense to be everything it has
- 2:42Speaker 4: been in the past with with Sean Payton and New
- 2:44Speaker 4: Orleans especially, the tight end component has been a big
- 2:48Speaker 4: part of it. And you know, I think they want
- 2:50Speaker 4: that here and they believe they need it, and it would,
- 2:53Speaker 4: I think they believe open up a lot of other
- 2:56Speaker 4: things we haven't seen yet, which you know, some more
- 3:01Speaker 4: big impact runs out of play action and more impact
- 3:05Speaker 4: in the middle of the field. If it isn't Courtland
- 3:08Speaker 4: Sutton doing it. You know, I think they just see
- 3:12Speaker 4: that's where the biggest improvement can be made if they
- 3:16Speaker 4: if they can get that position involved the way he
- 3:18Speaker 4: did in New Orleans. You know, over the years, I
- 3:21Speaker 4: think they'll feel like, you know, they'll they'll have the
- 3:24Speaker 4: kind of impact they're going to need to really challenge
- 3:27Speaker 4: in the afc.
- 3:28Speaker 1: UH Leggy Sean Payton talked about it yesterday. Bo Nick's
- 3:33Speaker 1: sophomore slumps year two walls. He seems very unconcerned, are you.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Well, I guess I don't.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I disagree slightly with him that they somehow don't exist.
- 3:45Speaker 4: That was his uh uh. You know, he was just
- 3:48Speaker 4: having a hard time off the top of his head
- 3:50Speaker 4: naming people. That took a huge plumber. And he's right
- 3:54Speaker 4: about that. If you if you had a really good
- 3:56Speaker 4: rookie year quarterback, you're probably gonna have it proved good
- 4:00Speaker 4: year and year two no matter what. But there is
- 4:03Speaker 4: an adjustment, and we've seen it over the years.
- 4:07Speaker 2: You know.
- 4:07Speaker 4: It's just if you're the Broncos, you want to limit
- 4:11Speaker 4: that that sort of market correction as people get more
- 4:15Speaker 4: used to you and and have studied you more. Yes
- 4:20Speaker 4: he you know, as he said yesterday, they study you
- 4:22Speaker 4: during the season, but they study you in terms of
- 4:26Speaker 4: how you know, they'll play him that week. In the
- 4:30Speaker 4: off season, they study, you know, what are some of
- 4:34Speaker 4: the big picture things we want to do to to
- 4:37Speaker 4: to make it difficult on the quarterback. And that's kind
- 4:41Speaker 4: of what what happens now, especially in the first month
- 4:43Speaker 4: of the season. And you know, and Sean Payton said
- 4:47Speaker 4: it yesterday too, it's it's very important for this team
- 4:50Speaker 4: to get off to it a better start than it
- 4:53Speaker 4: has and to do that, you know, part of that
- 4:57Speaker 4: is going to be how bo Nicks deals with what
- 4:59Speaker 4: defense as have decided over the last three months that
- 5:03Speaker 4: he won't like very much.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, on top of that, when it comes
- 5:07Speaker 1: to what what exactly does that mean? You know, I know,
- 5:12Speaker 1: it's like, is it just giving different looks? Like the
- 5:15Speaker 1: way I think the Broncos can counter is if they
- 5:17Speaker 1: have an actual running game where play action could actually
- 5:20Speaker 1: work because they might be scared you might run the
- 5:22Speaker 1: football Like it feels like they can counteract some of
- 5:25Speaker 1: this stuff. But I guess what are the specifics that
- 5:27Speaker 1: you think he's gonna have to deal with this year
- 5:28Speaker 1: as opposed to last year?
- 5:30Speaker 4: You know, I think that you know, and we haven't
- 5:32Speaker 4: seen it yet, but my gut is just from talking
- 5:34Speaker 4: to some defensive coaches that I know, is I think,
- 5:39Speaker 4: you know, a lot of Sean Payton's offense is based
- 5:42Speaker 4: on you know, a lot of the movement routes through
- 5:45Speaker 4: the middle of the field, you know the crossers, you
- 5:49Speaker 4: know some of the overlaps, and you know things between
- 5:54Speaker 4: the numbers, and I think defenses initially at least, will
- 5:58Speaker 4: try to push as much of the action outside the
- 6:01Speaker 4: numbers as they can, because that'll challenge bo Nix's arm strength,
- 6:05Speaker 4: it will challenge the time he has in the pocket
- 6:08Speaker 4: to make those throws. They will want to take away
- 6:12Speaker 4: a lot of the quick hit things that he had
- 6:15Speaker 4: a lot of success with last year, you know, the
- 6:17Speaker 4: flash routes and the you know out turn around, you know, boom,
- 6:22Speaker 4: the balls there. They want to take away. They will
- 6:24Speaker 4: want to take away some of that.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Now.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Obviously the Broncos know that Sean Payton it's not his
- 6:29Speaker 4: first rodeo with all this, and a lot of people
- 6:32Speaker 4: try to take a lot of that stuff away with
- 6:35Speaker 4: the Saints too. That's where the tight end comes in.
- 6:39Speaker 4: You start having an impact in contested situations. With a
- 6:42Speaker 4: tight end in the middle of the field, it's a
- 6:45Speaker 4: lot harder for defenses to dictate sure, to make you
- 6:48Speaker 4: push the ball outside when you don't want to.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Do you think the Broncos will have a thousand yard
- 6:52Speaker 3: rusher of this season? Do you think Sean Payne will
- 6:54Speaker 3: hand the ball off that many times this year?
- 6:57Speaker 2: You know, I've always said he has said he'd like
- 7:00Speaker 2: to run the ball more.
- 7:01Speaker 4: But I am in the I'll believe it when I
- 7:04Speaker 4: see it department, you know, And I think they might
- 7:09Speaker 4: just spread the snaps around so much that it would
- 7:12Speaker 4: be difficult, you know, to say they're gonna have a
- 7:15Speaker 4: thousand yard rusher. But I do think, you know, the
- 7:18Speaker 4: quote unquote starter when games open, I think Dobbins will
- 7:21Speaker 4: be that guy the most often.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Who do you think as far as new addition to
- 7:26Speaker 1: the team is going to catch the eye of people
- 7:28Speaker 1: in camp most.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Craig Relaw, you know, and if you you know, if
- 7:33Speaker 4: you care about defense, if you if you don't mind
- 7:36Speaker 4: not watching the ball for ten minutes. I watched him
- 7:41Speaker 4: for about four seconds yesterday, and that's that's a different
- 7:44Speaker 4: kind of player than they've had at linebacker, you know
- 7:48Speaker 4: for a little bit.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Uh.
- 7:49Speaker 4: That's a big guy with movement skills and and really
- 7:53Speaker 4: good reactions to the ball, understands what he's looking at
- 7:56Speaker 4: all of that. If he if he's healthy, fifteen sixteen,
- 8:01Speaker 4: seventeen games this year, this defense goes from already one
- 8:07Speaker 4: of the best two or three in the league to
- 8:09Speaker 4: a really elite level.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Does that a play to Hufanga too?
- 8:12Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, I mean that their energy. Guys, their experience,
- 8:18Speaker 4: they've played big games, they've been on good teams. You
- 8:20Speaker 4: can just tell they bring that air you know, of
- 8:24Speaker 4: success with them. And I think that's part of the reason.
- 8:27Speaker 4: You know, I've always been a draft first guy, but
- 8:30Speaker 4: if you're going to go in free agency and you're
- 8:32Speaker 4: gonna have to you know, all the time in the NFL,
- 8:36Speaker 4: you want to bring success in. You know, you want
- 8:39Speaker 4: to bring people who've had success, know what it takes,
- 8:42Speaker 4: you know, know what the requirements are for success. And
- 8:46Speaker 4: I think that's what those two guys bring, and along
- 8:50Speaker 4: with really good abilities if they're both healthy, really good
- 8:56Speaker 4: chance this is the best defense in the league because
- 8:58Speaker 4: a lot of people thought it was the defense in
- 9:00Speaker 4: the league last year.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Why do you think the Broncos went strength for strength,
- 9:04Speaker 3: Because I mean, obviously the defense was was the primary
- 9:08Speaker 3: unit and they're like, let's just let's add all let's
- 9:10Speaker 3: just get better on the defensive side of the ball.
- 9:12Speaker 3: Why do you think the Broncos made that decision? What
- 9:15Speaker 3: is just the free agents available or they're like, let's
- 9:17Speaker 3: just yeah, we are a defensive team, let's keep doing it.
- 9:22Speaker 2: You know, I don't think Sean Payton.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Ever, say he's a defense you know, he coaches a
- 9:26Speaker 4: defensive team. But I think he understands and believes. I
- 9:31Speaker 4: think he believes he can scheme a lot of things
- 9:33Speaker 4: on offense. You know, if he has the right players,
- 9:37Speaker 4: the guys he wants. I think he's always gonna believe
- 9:40Speaker 4: he can scheme things on offense to fix, to repair.
- 9:45Speaker 2: But he knows.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Look at the AFC, look at what you have to
- 9:49Speaker 4: navigate to even get to the conference championship game. The
- 9:54Speaker 4: list of quarterbacks is just epic. I don't remember a
- 9:57Speaker 4: time really when it was quite like this. You know,
- 10:02Speaker 4: you can have a franchise quarterback and not make the
- 10:05Speaker 4: playoffs very easily, as Joe Burrow and the Bengals last year,
- 10:10Speaker 4: but to navigate that, you have to be impactful on defense.
- 10:16Speaker 2: And I think that's what he sees. If you're gonna
- 10:19Speaker 2: make that.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Little extra push, yeah you're gonna need touchdowns and you're
- 10:24Speaker 4: gonna need a good quarterback, but you're gonna have to
- 10:26Speaker 4: limit somebody else's franchise quarterback on downs that matter. And
- 10:32Speaker 4: if you look at it, Buffalo did the same thing.
- 10:35Speaker 4: They attack some deficiencies on defense, third downs, some pass defense.
- 10:40Speaker 2: They did the same thing. Really, the Broncos.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Did lady last thing. Real quick, we're just going through
- 10:45Speaker 1: this the NFL Top one hundred, which is voted on
- 10:47Speaker 1: by the players, the quarterbacks that are on this list.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Bo Nicks just came up at number sixty four. Best
- 10:54Speaker 1: player in the league is voted on by the players.
- 10:57Speaker 1: That's in front of Tua, Dak Donald and Jordan Love.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Do you agree with that?
- 11:05Speaker 4: Well, I think there's some recency bias in there. You know,
- 11:08Speaker 4: it's Dak didn't play. You know, the seasons Dak had
- 11:15Speaker 4: and two ahead last year impacted by injury. So there's
- 11:19Speaker 4: always recency bias when you ask quarter current players about
- 11:24Speaker 4: current players.
- 11:25Speaker 2: And uh, I think that's what you see.
- 11:28Speaker 4: I think bo Is is probably a little high if
- 11:32Speaker 4: you were if you were asking gms to rank the
- 11:34Speaker 4: top one hundred players, he finishes in the top one hundred,
- 11:38Speaker 4: I would guess from my GM folks I talked to,
- 11:41Speaker 4: But maybe not that high. Yes, that's the one I
- 11:46Speaker 4: would say if I'm if I'm a general manager at
- 11:49Speaker 4: ten thousand feet just looking at it, uh, you know,
- 11:53Speaker 4: with the data or whatever, that that's the one you
- 11:56Speaker 4: would challenge. And some of that is just the length
- 11:58Speaker 4: of resume.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Jeff we at ESPN dot com. He joined us every
- 12:01Speaker 1: single Thursday. And uh, Jeff, I won't bother you in
- 12:05Speaker 1: your bubble tomorrow, but I will see you tomorrow at
- 12:07Speaker 1: Broncos camp.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm easy to spot, as you know, Jeff.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Leggwild always appreciate.
- 12:12Speaker 2: It, buddy, Thank you. Take care of fous. We see
