- 0:27Speaker 1: beginning this week, and it'll be really exciting to see
- 0:30Speaker 1: the team, not just the rookies, get on the field
- 0:32Speaker 1: and run around and do football adjacent things. I don't
- 0:35Speaker 1: think we're gonna see anything groundbreaking, but to start getting
- 0:38Speaker 1: this new group of Saints together for this year's team.
- 0:41Speaker 1: That comes with a lot of expectation and promise and hope.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Maybe a return to the playoffs after a five year hiatus,
- 0:47Speaker 1: maybe winning a division which many consider is going to
- 0:50Speaker 1: be a bad division of buy and large Saints have
- 0:52Speaker 1: a really good shot maybe being a surprise team in
- 0:54Speaker 1: the NFL with that as the backdrop. Derek Carr goes
- 0:58Speaker 1: on Max Crosby's pot Cast Whi's called the rush with
- 1:02Speaker 1: Max Crosby. Those two, of course, were teammates with the Raiders,
- 1:06Speaker 1: and Crosby asked Derek Carr his one big regret from
- 1:11Speaker 1: his time in New Orleans, And my goodness, there are many,
- 1:14Speaker 1: maybe like the last play he played for the Saints,
- 1:17Speaker 1: deciding he was going to be Superman and fly over
- 1:19Speaker 1: a defender into the sideline, you know, hurting his arm
- 1:23Speaker 1: and never playing again. But no, that's not what he said,
- 1:27Speaker 1: not what happened at the end of his career in
- 1:29Speaker 1: New Orleans. He actually said one regret is from the
- 1:32Speaker 1: beginning of his time in.
- 1:33Speaker 2: New Orleans, I wish man more than anything. When we
- 1:36Speaker 2: first got there, I was so focused on the football
- 1:38Speaker 2: that I didn't really get to the community aspect like
- 1:40Speaker 2: I did with the Raiders that first six months. That's
- 1:43Speaker 2: one thing I look back, man, I wish I did
- 1:45Speaker 2: that sooner. Right. We did some community things, We helped
- 1:47Speaker 2: bless a lot of families and people out there, and
- 1:49Speaker 2: it was beautiful. That's one of the things I was like, Man,
- 1:51Speaker 2: I wish I did that sooner, right. You know, that's
- 1:53Speaker 2: one thing I look back on.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Derek Carr. You might remember sort of infamously, he talked
- 2:01Speaker 1: about his first meal in New Orleans with Chipotle. That
- 2:05Speaker 1: was back in the spring of twenty twenty three, after
- 2:07Speaker 1: he signed with the Saints. He continues to be a
- 2:13Speaker 1: complicated person at thirty five years old. Derek Carr's not
- 2:19Speaker 1: an old man, but he's a veteran football player who's
- 2:22Speaker 1: been in the public spotlight for a long time. And
- 2:26Speaker 1: it is so interesting when you see people like Derek
- 2:29Speaker 1: Carr because the thing I've said about him often I
- 2:31Speaker 1: do believe is true. I believe Derek Carr is genuinely
- 2:34Speaker 1: a good man. I believe that. I believe he is
- 2:37Speaker 1: a good man, husband, father, christian all those things. I
- 2:39Speaker 1: believe those things about Derek Carr. He's innately good and
- 2:42Speaker 1: he wants to do right by others. I believe all
- 2:44Speaker 1: that is true. I also believe Derek Carr so desperately
- 2:51Speaker 1: wants and needs to be liked and needs approval, and
- 2:56Speaker 1: in spite of the fact, and he struggles to get there,
- 3:04Speaker 1: certainly with a lot of Saints fans and others, in
- 3:07Speaker 1: spite of himself. Really, you know, Derek Carr, you talked
- 3:10Speaker 1: about you're focusing on the football, and when he got
- 3:13Speaker 1: to New Orleans in that that first season with the Saints,
- 3:18Speaker 1: he started all seventeen games and he threw for thirty
- 3:21Speaker 1: eight hundred yards, but a lot of that was stack
- 3:25Speaker 1: compiling late in a really a failed nine to eight season.
- 3:33Speaker 1: That's when we termed him then the Emperor of empty yards.
- 3:36Speaker 1: You might recall it. Do you still have that?
- 3:38Speaker 3: Oh, Paul, with the camera on yourself, there we go,
- 3:49Speaker 3: the Emperor of empty yards?
- 3:53Speaker 1: Man, how did that throwback feel? Huh? Was that just
- 3:57Speaker 1: like an organic reaction? It was I heard Emperor Emptory
- 4:00Speaker 1: and I'm like, where's my kings drawn?
- 4:01Speaker 2: On your feet?
- 4:03Speaker 1: On your feet muso, stand up for the Emperor of
- 4:08Speaker 1: emtr I don't. I don't miss him at all. I mean,
- 4:18Speaker 1: think about it, like that's how we had to entertain
- 4:20Speaker 1: ourselves for those two years, was like playing that drop
- 4:23Speaker 1: because this team was largely and holy irrelevant. Now we
- 4:29Speaker 1: can actually talk about reasons to be optimistic about Tyler
- 4:32Speaker 1: Shuck in the direction. Maybe the honest juxtaposition is just
- 4:36Speaker 1: looking at the way those two have ingratiated themselves when
- 4:40Speaker 1: they got to the city and the state in the region.
- 4:44Speaker 1: So look, I don't want it to be about Derek Carr,
- 4:47Speaker 1: but it's never about Derek Carr again, and he will
- 4:50Speaker 1: be a failed footnote in a Saint's history that has many,
- 4:54Speaker 1: many failures throughout it, with the one sterling shining era
- 4:59Speaker 1: of Drew Brey and Sean Payton outside of really a
- 5:03Speaker 1: history of incompetence. But hopefully we're moving into a new
- 5:12Speaker 1: era that does give people hope that the organization can
- 5:16Speaker 1: conside to grow and develop and build. And I think
- 5:18Speaker 1: looking at the way that Tyler Shuck sort of embraced
- 5:22Speaker 1: the city right away, moved into New Orleans. You'd see
- 5:25Speaker 1: him at restaurants, even doing podcasts and stuff like that,
- 5:28Speaker 1: talking about the culture, riding on Marti girlf floats and everything.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Say it all the time in Louisiana, New Orleans, the
- 5:35Speaker 1: whole state. It is truly a unique place culturally, and
- 5:41Speaker 1: it's one of those places where if you accept us
- 5:43Speaker 1: in our idiosyncrasies, we'll give you the biggest bear hug back. Ever,
- 5:47Speaker 1: it's something Derek Carr never really understood, something that Tyler
- 5:50Speaker 1: Shuck clearly has understood from the beginning, which is why
- 5:52Speaker 1: the popularity is dramatically different.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Now.
- 5:54Speaker 1: You still have to go in and that's something Derek
- 5:56Speaker 1: Carr didn't do at a high level, something we hope
- 5:58Speaker 1: Tyler Shuck can and that'll start as the Saints are
- 6:00Speaker 1: hitting the practice field for OTAs here up this week
