Transcript
- 0:11Speaker 1: all right, welcome back.
- 0:14Speaker 1: The instant reaction season continues.
- 0:18Speaker 1: We got a double feature as we bring in mi.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Miami contributor Justin to the program as Miami goes down for the first time this year.
- 0:30Speaker 1: So funny we do our first instant reaction to it.
- 0:36Speaker 2: You, son of a bitch.
- 0:37Speaker 2: You are a son of a bitch.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I'll tell you what dude.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Oh man, yeah, Georgia Tech is a son of a bitch.
- 0:43Speaker 2: We didn't even do any.
- 0:44Speaker 2: We didn't even do an instant reaction for the virginia tech hail mary an instant reaction for the cal game yeah, but no this is the one yeah, I mean, that's how it is.
- 0:58Speaker 1: When you're you're winning in the acc, it's just like when are they?
- 1:02Speaker 2: gonna lose, and it's goddamn ge Tech.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I was waiting on it, man, yeah.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Every time, dude.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Let's go five years ago, when Bubba Baxa, our kicker, missed four field goals.
- 1:15Speaker 2: No, no, it's under 46.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Oh, sorry, I was just hitting that Missed four field goals and we lost to Georgia Tech in overtime.
- 1:23Speaker 2: By the way why I remember that so vividly that was my wedding day.
- 1:29Speaker 2: So Georgia tech, oh good, sweet mother.
- 1:35Speaker 2: So Georgia tech shit on my wedding day.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Then we couldn't figure out how to take a knee against georgia tech last year and then georgia tech does this today.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Oh, man, and then at the end, instead of scoring a touchdown, they go down at the two and take a knee to win it this year yeah, I know this game, I would have rather got beat by 30.
- 2:03Speaker 2: This game falls on the D.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Yeah, you give up 300 yards rushing.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I don't care who you are, I mean, you're going to lose.
- 2:13Speaker 2: No, and that was the problem as the game went on.
- 2:15Speaker 2: You could see it.
- 2:16Speaker 2: It wasn't until towards the end of the game, when Miami started getting more possessions on offense, that the offense started getting in rhythm and the fact that they could keep the ball away from us that game looked eerily similar to a game.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I saw the same kind of game plan but, like you know, miami was better.
- 2:34Speaker 1: But the defense is able to rest and strategize and come up with some blitzes.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Cam ward, the one thing that we said before he even transferred, when he was in the open market.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Jimmy reno was quick to play the ball too long, right and which causes and he fumbles a lot.
- 2:54Speaker 1: He's prone to fumbles by because he holds the ball long and he's going to get there was four.
- 2:58Speaker 1: There was four open receivers on the final he put his head down to move and he did not see the back rush and it got him and he lost the ball.
- 3:08Speaker 2: And a lot of his pocket magic from the entire season.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Today it caught up with him.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Almost on every time that he tried to dance around.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he still threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns.
- 3:24Speaker 1: No, georgia Tech tech brought it, you know.
- 3:27Speaker 2: But the defense wasn't, didn't get any help, they didn't step up to the end of the game what got exposed on miami's defense and it's, it's been an obvious glaring or glaring uh hole in the defense is um our linebacker play.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Oh man, the Derek Nicholson coached linebackers.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Our linebacker play is not good and that's why all this zone read, speed sweep stuff was killing us, because the defensive line would do what they were supposed to do, but the linebackers don't fill the hole, they don't fill the gaps, and that was what, schematically, was.
- 4:06Speaker 2: The biggest problem with our defense is our linebackers were not stepping up and filling the gaps on a lot of the zone reads and the speed sweeps.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:14Speaker 2: And that is going to be a major, major, major problem against SMU.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Because that's SMU's offense.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Right, but let me go over I mean because you look at it other than that last play where he did get hit and he fumbled 25-39, 348, three touchdowns, zero picks and then Martinez, 15 carries, 81 yards.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I thought he could have had a couple more especially on that short yardage one that idiotic fourth down call?
- 4:48Speaker 2: I think I mean you do not.
- 4:50Speaker 1: If you're gonna override the call ever if you're, if you're crystal balls, that's when you're like get on the headset and you're like we're running this thing you know, as an yeah, you're like he should have known that, and then that you can tell they were starting to move the ball they were starting to cook and they blew it.
- 5:07Speaker 1: There's too many things that can go wrong when you do that.
- 5:11Speaker 2: No, it's almost like the offensive play calling was leading us down the path of Cam Ward magic at the end of the game.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Well.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Like they were relying on that.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Yeah, too much.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Oh, the whole game.
- 5:26Speaker 1: That's the strategy is just kind of run and then turn around and it's you know, scramble, drill, you know yeah, and it, it, it's worked yeah, and it cost them.
- 5:37Speaker 1: They had to hold and the illegal man downfield.
- 5:39Speaker 1: They did get a in for a touchdown, jacoby george.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Hell of an effort, you know he got yeah, jacoby george showed up drilled he got drilled all game, but he came down with a lot of passes no, yeah, who got drilled?
- 5:52Speaker 2: was that like 87th string running back for georgia tech?
- 5:56Speaker 2: Oh yeah, 87th string running back for georgia tech.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Oh yeah, oh my god, that hit was amazing.
- 6:05Speaker 2: It reminded me of the 90s and I could argue that it shouldn't have been a targeting call because dude put his face mask in the running back's shoulder.
- 6:12Speaker 1: It was a textbook, perfect tackle from the 90s well, um, yeah, uh, 436 total yards for miami, 370 for georgia tech, but uh the pass on the ground, yeah, 271 um the sack yards count against rushing in college opposite and pro um 88 rushing yards for the canes um 6.9 yards per play for miami still pretty good.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Uh, 5.8 for georgia tech 23 first downs from miami 18.
- 6:49Speaker 1: But here it is right.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Here this is the stat that sticks out third, third down, three of ten Miami and nine of 14 for Georgia Tech.
- 7:03Speaker 2: And that is the ball game and the third down conversion that's it.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Extended drive that's the game.
- 7:08Speaker 2: The extended drive.
- 7:09Speaker 2: They kept the ball out of Cam Ward's hand.
- 7:12Speaker 1: That's the ball game, that's the game plan, and they figured out a way to do it and they rushed the field and they ended miami's dream season now, no, no, I meant as far as undefeated dream season oh yeah yeah, undefeated dream season.
- 7:28Speaker 1: I forgot to put that caveat on the beginning of that.
- 7:30Speaker 1: But uh, they weren't able to do what fsu did last year, which I thought they were going to do.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Honestly, I was like lock it up.
- 7:41Speaker 1: This is an ACC championship, then they might lose in the playoff.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Maybe I don't know.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Now they do have the inside track on Clemson.
- 7:51Speaker 1: If those teams are tied, clemson has to play Pitt, which those teams are tied, barring that Clemson beats Pitt and wins at Virginia Tech Miami, I believe with the win over Louisville and Clemson's loss to Louisville would be the difference if those two teams yeah, as long as Miami doesn't lose again.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they'll go to the Champions League.
- 8:19Speaker 1: It's Miami-SMU Yep.
- 8:22Speaker 2: And as long as SMU doesn't lose again, it's going to be Miami versus Miami-JVU.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Yes, yes, we'll find out which one's the varsity.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Exactly, dude.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I mean remember when Lashley left.
- 8:35Speaker 2: If we go back to one of our podcasts when Lashley left, I wanted Lashley left.
- 8:37Speaker 2: If we go back to one of our podcasts when Lashley left, I wanted Lashley.
- 8:42Speaker 1: That game's going to be Fun to watch actually.
- 8:46Speaker 2: That's going to be a shootout, because they're going to kill y'all's defense.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Miami has to score 50 In that game to win.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Yeah, because SMU's offense is scoring 45.
- 9:00Speaker 2: No doubt about it.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Unless you can make, if you can hit that quarterback, though.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I believe that's what I was saying, but it's hard to do.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Their zone running scheme at SMU is similar to what they run at Georgia Tech, except with better players at every position.
- 9:18Speaker 2: So why Miami is going to.
- 9:22Speaker 2: The best hope for Miami in that SMU game is that those four yards on that run on first and ten is going to be 40 yards and a touchdown and Miami gets the ball back Because the defense is pass rush heavy with a young secondary and bad linebackers.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:47Speaker 2: And the defense looks good when Cam Ward starts rolling and they can bum rush the passer when they're not doing that.
- 9:55Speaker 2: I mean obviously they got exposed today, because if you consistently run the ball at Miami, the weakness of the linebackers get exposed.
- 10:06Speaker 1: And that's what Georgia Tech does best is kind of that's what they do.
- 10:10Speaker 1: They're pesky and like if you can't, if you're going to, that's what Georgia Tech does best is kind of that's what they do.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I mean we.
- 10:12Speaker 1: They're pesky and like, if you can't, if you're going to, if your run defense is not there, they will draw that win out in a maddening fashion for your team and you've got to stop the run against them, that's, and if you can't do it, you're going to lose.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I know it was like a slow building.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Frustration watching the game yeah like at first I'm like all right, well, you know we're holding them to four or five yards, whatever, cam will get cooking, yeah.
- 10:42Speaker 2: And then, you know, towards the end of the third quarter, I'm like shit, they're still doing the same thing.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Four or five yards and cam just is not getting the ball.
- 10:50Speaker 2: We can't make a tackle.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Our linebackers aren't stepping up and making the tackles they need to make in the run game.
- 10:56Speaker 1: And then they got.
- 10:56Speaker 1: They're relying on the safety and they have the guy that's wearing two two sets of shoulder pads and a neck collar.
- 11:03Speaker 2: I love that guy.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I do too.
- 11:06Speaker 1: I mean like it's hard not to.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I mean when we.
- 11:09Speaker 1: I mean like it's hard not to.
- 11:10Speaker 1: I mean when Florida State played him in the beginning of the year.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I was like why can't we have that guy Like there's no way that, like that guy, was highly recruited out of high school.
- 11:20Speaker 1: No chance?
- 11:21Speaker 2: No, of course not Dude that guy probably yeah, he probably played middle linebacker at, like some high school.
- 11:27Speaker 2: I love the extra pads.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I love it.
- 11:28Speaker 2: I love the extra pads.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I love it.
- 11:30Speaker 1: I love that.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Look, they need that.
- 11:32Speaker 2: It reminds me of the 90s More of that.
- 11:34Speaker 1: We need more of that today.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Give me more neck rolls.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yes, more neck rolls With my middle linebacker Please.
- 11:41Speaker 1: We need more neck rolls, give me more Brian Cox from the Dolphins.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Not even the neck roll.
- 11:49Speaker 1: He's got the old school neck roll with the jersey over it, he's trying to yeah, it's almost like the he's like.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Oh yeah, he's like he's like he's just trying to play the role you know and yeah, I'm here he's like I'm gonna hit you so hard that I need an extended neck roll because my neck is going to be getting hit so far back because it's hitting you so hard.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Oh God, it's great.
- 12:15Speaker 2: That's why.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I love Ryan Cox.
- 12:18Speaker 1: I think it's great, but well, what else you got?
- 12:23Speaker 1: Man, it's a tough one.
- 12:27Speaker 2: The actual big news of the day.
- 12:29Speaker 1: The sad news is it's not going to get it's not going to get, it'll be looked at as a terrible loss and it will be talked about as hopefully but now waited as like two losses probably.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Unless you can, now the ACC championship game is a winner Winning in yeah.
- 12:46Speaker 2: It felt like that for.
- 12:50Speaker 1: SMU with their rankings.
- 12:51Speaker 1: They were.
- 12:51Speaker 1: They weren't giving them because they had already lost.
- 12:54Speaker 2: So they're, they're gonna have to be like the byu, I know so they're they byu is number nine in the country and they're undefeated and they're on track to win the big 12.
- 13:06Speaker 1: They would get a top four seed, regardless, if they even lose.
- 13:08Speaker 1: If they win the big 12, they're gonna get a top four seed.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, even lose, if they win the big 12, they're gonna get a top four seed yeah, I mean shit.
- 13:15Speaker 2: We're at the point now, depending on what smu and byu could definitely be top four seeds.
- 13:21Speaker 1: How about that?
- 13:21Speaker 1: That?
- 13:22Speaker 2: would dude.
- 13:23Speaker 2: You could have smu, byu and army and army.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm all.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I'm here for it, oh you're.
- 13:31Speaker 2: You're damn right, dude.
- 13:32Speaker 2: If Miami's not going to make it, give me SMU, byu and Army in the playoffs.
- 13:39Speaker 1: Right, but they're going to sneak in Penn State, oh.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Penn State's for sure going in.
- 13:47Speaker 1: They're a fraud.
- 13:49Speaker 2: I know it's almost like there's Indiana is the team right now, that is my.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I would like to see Indiana.
- 13:57Speaker 1: I want to see them keep winning.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Surprise the Big Ten.
- 14:00Speaker 1: They play Ohio State when Next week.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Indiana beats Ohio State next week.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Oh please, I'm already calling it.
- 14:09Speaker 2: I'm already calling it.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Ohio State's not that good, yeah, and this Indiana team, geez.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I'm already calling it.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I'm already calling it Ohio state's not that good, yeah, and this Indiana team is.
- 14:14Speaker 1: They can score a point.
- 14:15Speaker 1: They're a good team because you, they have to be to do what they've done.
- 14:21Speaker 2: If you can score points in modern college football, if you your offense can consistently score points, you always have a chance against anybody.
- 14:29Speaker 2: There is no elite defenses anymore.
- 14:31Speaker 1: Yep, that's a great point and that's what he's established there at the Hoosier, you know country this is.
- 14:40Speaker 1: That would be a huge upset.
- 14:42Speaker 1: It would be yeah, he has.
- 14:45Speaker 1: It would be a big, huge story.
- 14:47Speaker 1: For you know, some like a team like Indiana to come in and win the Big Ten when it's only been two teams, pretty much.
- 14:54Speaker 2: If you thought it would be anybody.
- 14:56Speaker 1: It would be Wisconsin Shit.
- 14:58Speaker 1: It would be Penn State, Wisconsin, with.
- 15:00Speaker 2: TVD yeah.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Even the.
- 15:03Speaker 2: TVD got hurt on the first game of the season.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah, or Iowa even, but not Indiana.
- 15:10Speaker 1: That would be a cool story Something to work out, for they're playing Michigan.
- 15:16Speaker 1: They're up Michigan.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Yeah, michigan's a fraud.
- 15:19Speaker 1: So we had to go.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Well, we got to get on out of here, man.
- 15:28Speaker 1: We got another game to watch and it's gonna be a ass-kicking.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Let me tell you right now.
- 15:34Speaker 1: The spread was up to like 26 and a half for Notre Dame.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I saw it.
- 15:39Speaker 2: Yeah, I saw it kept getting bet up.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Back to 25.
- 15:42Speaker 1: You know Miami.
- 15:43Speaker 1: What did you think of the uniforms?
- 15:47Speaker 2: Oh, the uniforms today were great.
- 15:49Speaker 1: You like the all-orange?
- 15:50Speaker 1: I don't yeah.
- 15:52Speaker 2: I know, I just don't think it's a good look.
- 15:54Speaker 2: For me it feels 1980s.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I guess I never saw that.
- 15:57Speaker 1: I never really saw.
- 15:58Speaker 1: They never wore it against Florida State.
- 15:59Speaker 1: I always I like the classic, you know, orange, white, and then I mean I don't like it, but I just didn't like it.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I don't like the orange, I didn't like it, I don't like the orange, I think it looks better.
- 16:10Speaker 1: The helmet looks better.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Well, you know what.
- 16:12Speaker 2: I'll go ahead and agree with you, because I didn't like the shit product that was put on the field in those uniforms today.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Yeah, there you go, just didn't look like Miami.
- 16:26Speaker 2: You know what I mean.
- 16:26Speaker 2: It did, hey dude, what happened?
- 16:29Speaker 1: to our athletic defense.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Yeah Well, it got ran on by Georgia Tech and they ran on the field as they ended Miami's undefeated season 28-23.
- 16:46Speaker 1: And we got Florida State Notre Dame tonight.
- 16:51Speaker 2: We'll react to that later today.
- 16:52Speaker 2: We got Ole Miss Georgia right now, ole Miss.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Georgia right now.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Michigan and Indiana, ole Miss up 13-7.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Yeah, a lot of games going on in Colorado Losing to Texas Tech.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Upset Saturday Yep Upset.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Saturday man, it might have been kicked off.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Upset Saturday may have been kicked off by Georgia Tech dude.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Yeah, and after they kicked off the season with what looks now like a letdown win from them, that only won.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Man, barely beat the crap Florida State team.
- 17:30Speaker 1: We shouldn't have a win all year, really.
- 17:33Speaker 1: We'll see if they can cover the spread.
- 17:37Speaker 1: It's now at 25,.
- 17:38Speaker 1: If you're interested in those things, how about Florida State with the upset?
- 17:43Speaker 1: How about it, man?
- 17:45Speaker 1: You know what I will.
- 17:53Speaker 2: I will do the seminal shop if they do alright, well, you heard it here.
- 17:56Speaker 1: We'll watch it, we'll react to it and we'll talk to you real soon, right after the game, right here on the North Florida Sports Network.
- 18:09Speaker 2: I'm goddamn mad, I'm goddamn.
