- 0:04Speaker: Hello and welcome to the Motor Trade Radio podcast powered by
- 0:09Speaker: Cazoo with Philip Northolt and Curtis Hutchinson bringing you
- 0:13Speaker: all the chatter that matters across the car retailing sector
- 0:17Speaker: from factory to forecourt.
- 0:25Speaker: Well, here we are again, Phil, we're recording on again, the
- 0:29Speaker: hottest day of the year.
- 0:30Speaker: But we're doing this in the morning, aren't we, because we
- 0:33Speaker: think we're both be a bit more sort of engaged.
- 0:36Speaker: I think everybody.
- 0:37Speaker: Yeah I think, I think at the minute I'm trying to be a lot
- 0:40Speaker: more proactive in the morning because I think as the day goes
- 0:42Speaker: on, people I'm speaking to seem to be a little bit more
- 0:45Speaker: lethargic as they as they get towards the, the end of the day.
- 0:49Speaker: But yeah, it's a busy, busy week.
- 0:52Speaker: Um, so, um, yeah, we've had the
- 0:54Speaker: eclipse this week, hottest day
- 0:56Speaker: of the year so far this week as
- 0:58Speaker: well.
- 0:58Speaker: So yeah, lots, lots What's happening?
- 1:00Speaker: What's going on?
- 1:01Speaker: And, uh, talking about, uh, the industry again, there's
- 1:07Speaker: absolutely no let up in what's happening in the industry.
- 1:11Speaker: It's a point I made last week about no signs of silly season.
- 1:15Speaker: Well, you know, we're now almost midway through August.
- 1:18Speaker: In fact, we will be midway through August by the time the
- 1:21Speaker: show comes out.
- 1:22Speaker: And, um, you know, there's no let up, is there?
- 1:25Speaker: There isn't.
- 1:25Speaker: And part of that is obviously we've got a new government and a
- 1:29Speaker: new cabinet in government, and there's lots coming out on that.
- 1:33Speaker: And a lot of it is becoming
- 1:34Speaker: related to the automotive sector
- 1:36Speaker: as well.
- 1:37Speaker: And I know there's been an announcement about one hundred
- 1:39Speaker: and thirty million pound investment into the
- 1:41Speaker: infrastructure and the automotive sector this week.
- 1:43Speaker: So there's lots coming out, but we will get on to that shortly.
- 1:46Speaker: But we have got a couple of, um, shout outs this week.
- 1:49Speaker: The first one is uh, we've got
- 1:51Speaker: Steven Wilson returning for his
- 1:53Speaker: men able, um, after the midway
- 1:55Speaker: break.
- 1:56Speaker: This month's theme is uh, don't let September surprise you.
- 2:01Speaker: Um, so yeah, looking forward to that one.
- 2:04Speaker: You know, asking whether, you know, you are using August to
- 2:07Speaker: recover or to set or to prepare.
- 2:11Speaker: So yeah, we'll, we'll get on to that one.
- 2:14Speaker: Um, at the halfway stage, won't we.
- 2:16Speaker: Yeah.
- 2:16Speaker: I'm looking forward to that one because I haven't heard it yet.
- 2:19Speaker: And uh, you know, Steve is really good around the, the
- 2:22Speaker: plate changes and some of the mindsets that, uh, possibly need
- 2:26Speaker: to be considered.
- 2:28Speaker: Um, they're also coming up next week.
- 2:31Speaker: We're actually recording, we hope to be recording.
- 2:34Speaker: We've got our fingers crossed, uh, two new episodes.
- 2:37Speaker: So do keep an eye on your podcast feed from Monday.
- 2:41Speaker: We, we don't want to tempt fate by giving too much away, but
- 2:44Speaker: suffice to say that, uh, we can't wait to share the content
- 2:48Speaker: with you should be a good one.
- 2:50Speaker: Hopefully one of them might
- 2:51Speaker: actually be related to one of
- 2:53Speaker: the, uh, the headline stories
- 2:54Speaker: this week.
- 2:54Speaker: But yes, we will, we will see on that one If you're a supplier
- 3:01Speaker: and would like us to profile your business and reach our
- 3:05Speaker: audience of dealer group bosses, managers and decision makers on

- 3:22Speaker: Some of the companies already featured in our supply specials
- 3:26Speaker: include Autoglym, Impel, Generational and MTC, and you
- 3:31Speaker: can find them and many more in your podcast feed.
- 3:35Speaker: And if you'd like us to profile
- 3:37Speaker: your business, then just message

- 3:46Speaker: You're listening to the Motor
- 3:48Speaker: Trade Radio podcast powered by
- 3:51Speaker: Cazoo.
- 3:54Speaker: Headlines this week come from the times a m motor trade news
- 3:59Speaker: and car dealer, starting with are we about to see a U-turn on
- 4:04Speaker: the Zev mandate?
- 4:05Speaker: A government consultation is underway with loud voices on
- 4:09Speaker: both sides of the debate.
- 4:11Speaker: We've got a round up of where we are, and we'll probably
- 4:14Speaker: speculate on where we are going.
- 4:17Speaker: The used car market was up marginally in Q2, but was.
- 4:21Speaker: But it was a strong quarter for EV transactions.
- 4:25Speaker: In the second half.
- 4:26Speaker: We'll look at a report on the rise in new car finance sales,
- 4:31Speaker: driving the strongest first half performance in almost two years.
- 4:36Speaker: Used finance was up two.
- 4:39Speaker: We'll also be asking, could car dealers in the South of England
- 4:43Speaker: be banned from washing cars as a result of the heatwave?
- 4:48Speaker: And will finish with a question for you.
- 4:50Speaker: Are the online details about your business up to date?
- 4:57Speaker: You're listening to the Motor
- 4:58Speaker: Trade Radio podcast powered by
- 5:02Speaker: Cazoo.
- 5:05Speaker: Curtis said there.
- 5:06Speaker: We're heading over to the times
- 5:07Speaker: and this broke over the weekend
- 5:09Speaker: in the Sunday Times, and that
- 5:11Speaker: Labour looks to roll back on net
- 5:14Speaker: zero targets.
- 5:16Speaker: Now, obviously this has been
- 5:17Speaker: rumoured and whether the new
- 5:19Speaker: government, the new cabinet,
- 5:20Speaker: will do anything towards the Zev
- 5:23Speaker: mandate.
- 5:23Speaker: And obviously there's many trade associations that have been
- 5:26Speaker: trying to lobby and industry leaders that have been trying to
- 5:30Speaker: lobby with the government to say that this needs a review.
- 5:33Speaker: And obviously, over the last six
- 5:36Speaker: to twelve months, the
- 5:36Speaker: government's been saying, yeah,
- 5:37Speaker: they may take a review of it,
- 5:39Speaker: but it may be twenty twenty
- 5:40Speaker: seven.
- 5:40Speaker: But indications are that this could be sooner, couldn't it?
- 5:43Speaker: Curtis.
- 5:44Speaker: Yeah, it's a good piece in the times.
- 5:47Speaker: And we'll put a link to the story in the newsletter that
- 5:50Speaker: goes out Monday morning.
- 5:52Speaker: But as you say, they broke it on Sunday and it was picked up by
- 5:55Speaker: some of the trade titles over the course of the week.
- 5:59Speaker: But but we're going back to to
- 6:00Speaker: the source because it is very
- 6:03Speaker: well informed.
- 6:04Speaker: And the gist of the story is that ministers are planning to
- 6:08Speaker: water down rules on EV car sales, which could mean that
- 6:12Speaker: half the new cars sold at the end of the decade will still
- 6:17Speaker: have petrol engines.
- 6:19Speaker: And, you know, the times in its reports looks at what's what's
- 6:25Speaker: actually changing here because, uh, as you say, you know, we've
- 6:29Speaker: effectively got a new government, we've got a new
- 6:31Speaker: transport secretary and we've got a new energy secretary, uh,
- 6:36Speaker: Miatta Fahnbulleh, uh, who seems to be taking a different
- 6:41Speaker: approach, sort of a more nuanced approach to net zero than her
- 6:46Speaker: predecessor, Ed Miliband.
- 6:49Speaker: So in the piece in the times, uh, it mentions that the
- 6:53Speaker: Department of Transport is looking again at the Zev
- 6:57Speaker: mandate, which clearly stipulates how many EVs must be
- 7:02Speaker: sold each year.
- 7:04Speaker: Um, after demand failed to rise as quickly as expected.
- 7:10Speaker: So the indications here, I think, Phil, are that the
- 7:14Speaker: government is actually listening to the industry and possibly
- 7:19Speaker: looking at the data, because the story goes on to say that, uh,
- 7:23Speaker: you know, the mandate, as we know, requires thirty three
- 7:26Speaker: percent of new vehicles sold this year to be fully electric.
- 7:31Speaker: Um, but that proportion rises to eighty percent in twenty thirty.
- 7:35Speaker: But the Department of Transport
- 7:38Speaker: is launching this consultation
- 7:40Speaker: over the course of, well,
- 7:42Speaker: effectively last week, that's
- 7:44Speaker: when it began, which will
- 7:46Speaker: propose relaxations of the
- 7:48Speaker: rules.
- 7:49Speaker: Um, because it has faced intense lobbying from motor
- 7:53Speaker: manufacturers who argue the mandates is is too tough.
- 7:58Speaker: I think this is this is the clear message.
- 8:00Speaker: I mean, nobody's questioning in
- 8:02Speaker: terms of the long term goal and,
- 8:05Speaker: you know, that long term
- 8:07Speaker: commitment.
- 8:08Speaker: But obviously thinking about challenges today, not just the
- 8:11Speaker: cost of living, but the financial impact that this is
- 8:14Speaker: having right across the the sector and the whole supply
- 8:18Speaker: chain from manufacturer through to the the retailer that I think
- 8:22Speaker: that's what everybody's trying to, to, to get across to the UK
- 8:27Speaker: government that, you know, we need certainty, but also we've
- 8:32Speaker: got to consider the current financial climate that we we
- 8:35Speaker: find ourselves in there.
- 8:37Speaker: But as you say, I mean, it's a, it's a great, great story.
- 8:40Speaker: And there is a counter challenge
- 8:43Speaker: in, in this saying that a source
- 8:45Speaker: familiar with the Dft's
- 8:47Speaker: consultation plan said that
- 8:49Speaker: there was a a recognition that
- 8:52Speaker: natural demand for electric
- 8:54Speaker: vehicles had not matured in the
- 8:57Speaker: way imagined when the framework
- 9:00Speaker: was devised.
- 9:01Speaker: And that obviously, I mean, there's a counter argument
- 9:05Speaker: saying that Tanya Sinclair, the chief executive of Electric
- 9:09Speaker: Vehicles UK, accused car manufacturers of spending more
- 9:14Speaker: time complaining about demand than creating it.
- 9:18Speaker: Which is quite a damning comment, though, isn't it?
- 9:21Speaker: It's pretty harsh, isn't it?
- 9:24Speaker: That really is the The Times piece.
- 9:27Speaker: I think this is particularly interesting, this story.
- 9:30Speaker: It's well sourced because it does actually suggest, and I
- 9:34Speaker: think this is the result of some leaking from the government
- 9:38Speaker: because it's suggesting that lowering the twenty thirty
- 9:42Speaker: mandate could be lowered to seventy, sixty or even fifty
- 9:48Speaker: percent of new vehicles.
- 9:49Speaker: So, uh, let's keep close tabs on
- 9:53Speaker: this story as it develops, I
- 9:55Speaker: think.
- 9:55Speaker: No, I think you're right.
- 9:56Speaker: I think I think this needs to be well thought out, because what
- 10:01Speaker: we would want to really happen is whatever comes from this
- 10:05Speaker: consultation and revision.
- 10:07Speaker: And I think it clearly does need
- 10:09Speaker: a a revision that needs to be
- 10:12Speaker: it.
- 10:12Speaker: And I think, you know, I think
- 10:14Speaker: obviously we need certainty, um,
- 10:17Speaker: for, for planning and things
- 10:18Speaker: like that.
- 10:19Speaker: So yeah, I think we've got to be careful.
- 10:20Speaker: We don't do too much, let's say
- 10:22Speaker: flip flopping, um, at the
- 10:24Speaker: minute, but I think, you know,
- 10:26Speaker: clearly evidence through the
- 10:27Speaker: Smmt and other data shows that,
- 10:30Speaker: you know, this is financially
- 10:31Speaker: damning at the minute and it
- 10:32Speaker: isn't having the intended
- 10:34Speaker: results that it was planned for
- 10:37Speaker: initially.
- 10:37Speaker: But as you say, I don't think this is going to go away.
- 10:39Speaker: So we will hear more about that
- 10:41Speaker: and hopefully next week we'll
- 10:42Speaker: have a conversation about it as
- 10:44Speaker: well.
- 10:45Speaker: But we're heading over to Fleet World now.
- 10:47Speaker: And this is again, a great,
- 10:49Speaker: great story saying that majority
- 10:51Speaker: of voters reject E v rollback as
- 10:54Speaker: PM faces backlash over Zev
- 10:57Speaker: mandate review.
- 10:59Speaker: Now obviously linking into that
- 11:00Speaker: story, saying that the new Prime
- 11:02Speaker: Minister, Andy Burnham, has been
- 11:03Speaker: warned against reducing electric
- 11:06Speaker: vehicle targets, as the latest
- 11:08Speaker: research shows that only a small
- 11:10Speaker: minority of the public supports
- 11:13Speaker: a slowdown of the nation's EV
- 11:16Speaker: transition.
- 11:18Speaker: Um, yeah.
- 11:18Speaker: I mean, this makes that last
- 11:20Speaker: story quite interesting as well,
- 11:21Speaker: isn't it?
- 11:22Speaker: It is.
- 11:23Speaker: Yeah.
- 11:23Speaker: Because most of the feedback we get on the Zev mandate is from
- 11:29Speaker: within the industry.
- 11:30Speaker: But this is very much how the public and specifically voters,
- 11:34Speaker: um, what, what their view on the Zev mandate is.
- 11:37Speaker: So this particular story, which
- 11:40Speaker: I only saw in Fleet World, I
- 11:41Speaker: didn't see anyone else pick this
- 11:43Speaker: up.
- 11:43Speaker: So again, we'll have a link to this in the newsletter that goes
- 11:47Speaker: out Monday morning.
- 11:48Speaker: But the polling was commissioned
- 11:50Speaker: by charging Industry Association
- 11:53Speaker: charged UK, but it was conducted
- 11:55Speaker: independently by YouGov and it
- 11:59Speaker: showed that whilst thirty seven
- 12:00Speaker: percent of respondents believe
- 12:03Speaker: the move should be slowed, the
- 12:05Speaker: move to the Zev mandate, thirty
- 12:09Speaker: four percent said that the pace
- 12:11Speaker: is about right and nineteen
- 12:13Speaker: percent said that it should be
- 12:15Speaker: sped up.
- 12:17Speaker: Over one in ten said they didn't know which is fair enough.
- 12:20Speaker: And it goes on to say that the.
- 12:22Speaker: The data presents a particularly
- 12:24Speaker: stark warning for the new Prime
- 12:26Speaker: Minister regarding his own
- 12:28Speaker: electoral base because among
- 12:31Speaker: those who voted voted for Labour
- 12:33Speaker: in twenty twenty four,
- 12:35Speaker: opposition to a policy rollback
- 12:38Speaker: is overwhelming because only
- 12:41Speaker: twenty one percent of twenty
- 12:42Speaker: twenty four Labour voters
- 12:44Speaker: support a slowdown, compared to
- 12:47Speaker: forty one percent who believe
- 12:49Speaker: the pace is correct and twenty
- 12:51Speaker: seven percent who want to see it
- 12:53Speaker: sped up.
- 12:54Speaker: So there's some fascinating, uh, results here, aren't there?
- 12:59Speaker: There is.
- 12:59Speaker: Yeah, quite interesting results, aren't they, in terms of, I
- 13:02Speaker: mean, that that counterargument of, you know, speeding up or
- 13:06Speaker: keeping the Z mandate as it is.
- 13:07Speaker: But I think, you know, again, you know, we're questioning the
- 13:10Speaker: damage to the retailers, the manufacturers and those across
- 13:14Speaker: the whole whole supply chain.
- 13:15Speaker: So yeah, I think, um, it's whether the Labour government
- 13:20Speaker: is, is looking at this as part of that consultation.
- 13:24Speaker: Um, and obviously, you know, the, there's a response in here
- 13:27Speaker: saying that, uh, octopus electric vehicles said there is
- 13:31Speaker: a real demand for electric cars, um, which is kind of playing in
- 13:36Speaker: a little bit into our next story, isn't it?
- 13:39Speaker: Yeah, definitely.
- 13:40Speaker: So moving on swiftly.
- 13:42Speaker: I see what you did there, Phil.
- 13:43Speaker: The next story is from a m
- 13:45Speaker: online and the headline is
- 13:47Speaker: Slight Growth sees used car
- 13:49Speaker: market breach quarterly
- 13:51Speaker: milestone.
- 13:52Speaker: So this is the latest Smmt data on used car transactions for the
- 13:59Speaker: second quarter of the year, which it's really useful data
- 14:03Speaker: this because it's showing where we are at the half point stage
- 14:06Speaker: of the year.
- 14:07Speaker: And the report in AM shows that the used car market saw a naught
- 14:12Speaker: point seven percent year on year increase in transactions, used
- 14:17Speaker: car transactions during the second quarter of the year, with
- 14:21Speaker: a total of just over two million vehicle transactions taking
- 14:25Speaker: place um, in the first second quarter since twenty twenty one,
- 14:33Speaker: um, during which the two million mark was surpassed.
- 14:36Speaker: So, you know, it's only a small increase, but it's a significant
- 14:40Speaker: one because it's breaching that two million unit mark.
- 14:45Speaker: Yeah.
- 14:45Speaker: No, again, I mean, you know, we're now at this, this halfway
- 14:49Speaker: point in the year, you know, just over four million used car
- 14:53Speaker: transactions, which resulted in a naught point two percent
- 14:57Speaker: growth year on year.
- 14:59Speaker: I think the the interesting bit, there's two bits within this
- 15:02Speaker: this story that we talk about is obviously, you know, we've
- 15:06Speaker: talked a lot of time about, obviously, the new car growth,
- 15:09Speaker: the new entrants, that lower cost of entry and the heavy
- 15:12Speaker: incentives that you've got in the new car market, as we sort
- 15:15Speaker: of see that that new car market continue to sort of break year
- 15:19Speaker: on year records month by month at the minute.
- 15:22Speaker: But obviously, you know, we've been talking about is there any
- 15:25Speaker: use vehicle erosion?
- 15:27Speaker: Um, because of that, that sort of growth in new cars.
- 15:31Speaker: But I think clearly, optimistically, you know,
- 15:34Speaker: breaking that two million for the two first quarters of, of
- 15:37Speaker: the year clearly illustrates that actually, you know, we are
- 15:41Speaker: seeing these used car transactions still remain across
- 15:44Speaker: the sector and, you know, not really having a tangible impact
- 15:50Speaker: on on use transactions from the new car market.
- 15:53Speaker: So hopefully that's a positive.
- 15:55Speaker: But the other bit is obviously
- 15:57Speaker: the EV element within the
- 15:58Speaker: centre.
- 15:59Speaker: Yeah, I think this is probably
- 16:01Speaker: the most interesting part of of
- 16:05Speaker: the stats or certainly the most
- 16:06Speaker: significant part, because Q2 saw
- 16:09Speaker: a sixty seven percent rise in
- 16:13Speaker: used EV transactions to just
- 16:16Speaker: over one hundred and ten
- 16:17Speaker: thousand units.
- 16:18Speaker: And that's the strongest quarterly growth for the fuel
- 16:22Speaker: type since Q1 twenty twenty.
- 16:24Speaker: For the Smmt said demand peaked
- 16:28Speaker: in months that saw big fuel
- 16:30Speaker: price rises, which, uh, you
- 16:32Speaker: know, we certainly saw during
- 16:34Speaker: the outbreak of the war in the
- 16:37Speaker: Middle East.
- 16:38Speaker: Um, and it also says that the growth was also set against
- 16:41Speaker: relatively weak EV demand a year earlier amid the changes.
- 16:47Speaker: But it is significant, isn't it, that EV transactions grew by
- 16:52Speaker: such um, by such a large percentage, sixty seven percent.
- 16:57Speaker: Yeah.
- 16:57Speaker: No, I think I think you're right.
- 16:58Speaker: I think, as you say, you know,
- 16:59Speaker: that from the, uh, Iran conflict
- 17:02Speaker: over there in the Middle East
- 17:04Speaker: and the fuel price impact from
- 17:06Speaker: the, the price of oil, you know,
- 17:08Speaker: we've seen right across the
- 17:09Speaker: sector, particularly in that
- 17:10Speaker: wholesale sector of the
- 17:12Speaker: performance of EVs starting to
- 17:14Speaker: increase.
- 17:15Speaker: Um, you know, still still a
- 17:17Speaker: little bit away in terms of
- 17:18Speaker: performance from their, um, Ice
- 17:21Speaker: counterparts.
- 17:22Speaker: But, you know, be it, you know,
- 17:23Speaker: positive result, both in
- 17:26Speaker: conversions, price point days to
- 17:28Speaker: sell right across wholesale and,
- 17:30Speaker: and retail.
- 17:31Speaker: So, you know, clearly that that
- 17:33Speaker: is starting to, I mean, but
- 17:34Speaker: alongside this, there's more
- 17:35Speaker: products in the marketplace,
- 17:37Speaker: there's more cost, you know,
- 17:38Speaker: cost, lower cost of entry
- 17:40Speaker: product in the marketplace now
- 17:42Speaker: as well.
- 17:42Speaker: And, you know, we've talked about a lot on the podcast, you
- 17:45Speaker: know, we're now in that market where the shortfall, the
- 17:48Speaker: shortage of both volume of vehicles because of the pandemic
- 17:52Speaker: in the used car market.
- 17:53Speaker: But actually the shortage of non
- 17:57Speaker: new energy vehicles, hybrid plug
- 17:59Speaker: in hybrid and EVs in that naught
- 18:01Speaker: to three not to four year old
- 18:03Speaker: market is clearly starting to
- 18:04Speaker: play out.
- 18:05Speaker: And I think within the story it
- 18:06Speaker: does talk about the demand for
- 18:08Speaker: used hybrids increased by thirty
- 18:11Speaker: one point two percent during Q2
- 18:14Speaker: to one hundred and thirty
- 18:16Speaker: thousand eight hundred and
- 18:17Speaker: twenty five transactions, whilst
- 18:19Speaker: plug in hybrid transactions fell
- 18:21Speaker: slightly by six point eight
- 18:23Speaker: percent.
- 18:24Speaker: So hybrid is obviously becoming a good alternative to that step
- 18:27Speaker: into to full EV.
- 18:29Speaker: Yeah, definitely.
- 18:30Speaker: And I've got a question for you, Phil.
- 18:32Speaker: So, uh, year to date, um, you know, sorry, Q2 was up naught
- 18:37Speaker: point seven percent, as we said, to just over two million.
- 18:41Speaker: Year to date is up naught point
- 18:43Speaker: two percent to over four
- 18:45Speaker: million.
- 18:45Speaker: How did they compare with your forecasts.
- 18:49Speaker: Um, yeah.
- 18:50Speaker: Um, pretty okay.
- 18:52Speaker: Um, so Q2, um, ninety nine point seven percent accurate.
- 18:58Speaker: So our forecast just over two
- 19:01Speaker: million and fifteen and we
- 19:02Speaker: finished on two million and
- 19:03Speaker: nine, uh, half year point,
- 19:06Speaker: ninety nine point nine percent
- 19:07Speaker: accurate.
- 19:08Speaker: So our forecast just, uh, four million and thirty one.
- 19:12Speaker: Um, and we finished on four million and twenty five.
- 19:16Speaker: Um, so yeah, I'm pretty pleased with those forecasts, but I
- 19:18Speaker: think clearly what that does illustrate is that, you know,
- 19:23Speaker: the long term forecast for the twenty twenty six, which is I'm
- 19:26Speaker: looking at a baseline of about seven point eight million.
- 19:30Speaker: Um, looks like we are on track for that.
- 19:33Speaker: So we're not, I think realistically, we're not going
- 19:35Speaker: to hit that eight million this year because you need another
- 19:38Speaker: two quarters of two million.
- 19:40Speaker: And that's unrealistic, especially for Q4.
- 19:44Speaker: So, you know, to, you know, I
- 19:47Speaker: think for me, getting a seven
- 19:48Speaker: point eight million user
- 19:49Speaker: transactional year and, you
- 19:51Speaker: know, a two point two million
- 19:53Speaker: new car market isn't a bad a bad
- 19:55Speaker: result overall, not too shabby
- 19:58Speaker: at all.
- 19:59Speaker: So we'll be back with the rest of the week's headlines after
- 20:03Speaker: this month's Men Able moment with Stephen Whitton.
- 20:07Speaker: You're listening to all the chatter that matters on motor
- 20:11Speaker: trade radio powered by Cazoo.
- 20:15Speaker: Next up is our latest man able moment looking at mental health
- 20:19Speaker: and wellbeing best practices in the automotive sector.
- 20:24Speaker: With me, Steven Whitton.
- 20:28Speaker: Hi everyone and welcome to this month's Men Able Moments.
- 20:30Speaker: Hope you're well and enjoying
- 20:32Speaker: this spectacular summer that
- 20:34Speaker: we're having.
- 20:35Speaker: And of course, the month of August.
- 20:37Speaker: For many in the motor trade can actually feel a little bit like
- 20:42Speaker: the calm before the storm.
- 20:44Speaker: So for this month, I want to pose a question about not
- 20:48Speaker: letting September surprise you.
- 20:50Speaker: Now, what I mean by that is that in August, being the calm before
- 20:54Speaker: the storm, people are taking holidays, showrooms and
- 20:57Speaker: businesses are a bit quieter.
- 20:59Speaker: Teams are working around annual
- 21:01Speaker: leave and before you know it,
- 21:03Speaker: September arrives, which for
- 21:04Speaker: many of you will include a plate
- 21:06Speaker: change and that comes with
- 21:08Speaker: increased footfall and higher
- 21:10Speaker: expectations.
- 21:12Speaker: And wherever you are across the
- 21:13Speaker: sector, you will at some point
- 21:15Speaker: be affected by the September
- 21:17Speaker: rush.
- 21:19Speaker: So here's my question.
- 21:20Speaker: Are you using August to recover or to prepare?
- 21:26Speaker: So recently I've been working
- 21:27Speaker: with some leaders who've started
- 21:29Speaker: to understand something really
- 21:30Speaker: important, and that is that the
- 21:32Speaker: best teams don't suddenly become
- 21:34Speaker: brilliant when the pressure
- 21:35Speaker: arrives.
- 21:36Speaker: They build habits before it does.
- 21:39Speaker: And out of all of those conversations, I've picked up on
- 21:42Speaker: one practical idea that I think you can take into next week.
- 21:47Speaker: So before anyone goes on
- 21:48Speaker: holiday, or maybe as they come
- 21:50Speaker: back, ask them three simple
- 21:52Speaker: questions.
- 21:54Speaker: What's working well?
- 21:56Speaker: What's one thing we need to keep an eye on?
- 21:58Speaker: And what's one thing that could catch us out in September?
- 22:02Speaker: Then listen carefully.
- 22:04Speaker: Not because you're looking for problems, but actually because
- 22:08Speaker: you're looking for patterns.
- 22:10Speaker: And you'll often find that the
- 22:11Speaker: people closest to the customer
- 22:13Speaker: already know where the friction
- 22:14Speaker: is.
- 22:15Speaker: They know the process that takes too long.
- 22:18Speaker: They know where the communication breaks down, and
- 22:21Speaker: they know what customers are likely to notice before you do.
- 22:25Speaker: So great leaders don't wait for
- 22:27Speaker: a September to expose those
- 22:28Speaker: issues.
- 22:29Speaker: They use August to uncover them.
- 22:32Speaker: So my challenge for you this month is this.
- 22:35Speaker: Before the end of the month,
- 22:37Speaker: have one conversation with each
- 22:38Speaker: member of your team using those
- 22:40Speaker: three questions.
- 22:42Speaker: And you might just prevent a
- 22:44Speaker: problem Or you might uncover an
- 22:46Speaker: idea, or you might simply show
- 22:49Speaker: your people that their voice
- 22:51Speaker: matters.
- 22:53Speaker: Leadership isn't just about responding well under pressure.
- 22:57Speaker: It's about preparing your people before the pressure arrives.
- 23:02Speaker: So have a fantastic August.
- 23:04Speaker: And if you're taking some time off, enjoy a well-earned break
- 23:07Speaker: and I'll see you next month for another man able moment.
- 23:11Speaker: In the meantime, as always, if you would like to get in touch,
- 23:14Speaker: you can reach me at Steven dot whitten at mail dot org.
- 23:19Speaker: Many thanks.
- 23:20Speaker: Take care.
- 23:21Speaker: Well, another great many were there from Steven.
- 23:24Speaker: And obviously, I think, you know, Steven's background is
- 23:26Speaker: more to trade.
- 23:27Speaker: Um, you know, he spent a large
- 23:30Speaker: proportion of his career in
- 23:32Speaker: dealerships.
- 23:33Speaker: So he understands that that
- 23:34Speaker: build up was maybe back in his
- 23:36Speaker: day.
- 23:36Speaker: It might have been in August,
- 23:37Speaker: the first plate registration
- 23:39Speaker: rather than a march in
- 23:40Speaker: September.
- 23:41Speaker: Um, but he understands that that build up the anticipation to a
- 23:45Speaker: first plate big month and how that takes stress around a
- 23:50Speaker: holiday period within the sector, doesn't it?
- 23:53Speaker: Yeah.
- 23:54Speaker: It's a it's a point really well made because August, as we know,
- 23:59Speaker: that doesn't seem to be anyone around at the moment.
- 24:02Speaker: So everyone seems to be on holiday.
- 24:04Speaker: But, uh, you know, certainly in the franchise sector, um, August
- 24:08Speaker: is a key month because you're prepping for September, you
- 24:11Speaker: know, the second biggest sales period of the year.
- 24:15Speaker: So there's, there's still plenty of plates to spin.
- 24:18Speaker: And, you know, it's so important to prepare the staff and, you
- 24:23Speaker: know, for leaders to be thinking along those lines.
- 24:26Speaker: I like the, uh, the link there with the plates to spin there.
- 24:29Speaker: Curtis.
- 24:29Speaker: But, uh.
- 24:33Speaker: But no, I think, you know, I think again, you know, if you do
- 24:35Speaker: want to get in touch with Steven, then then please do
- 24:37Speaker: reach out to him.
- 24:39Speaker: You've got his email address there.
- 24:40Speaker: And if you need to get in touch with him, then just look for him
- 24:42Speaker: on the social channels, particularly on LinkedIn.
- 24:47Speaker: I think, you know, he's got some
- 24:48Speaker: great advice around, you know,
- 24:50Speaker: handling this this mental health
- 24:52Speaker: and wellbeing across our
- 24:53Speaker: industry at these, you know, as
- 24:55Speaker: we continually sort of face
- 24:57Speaker: these, uh, continual challenges
- 24:59Speaker: within the, the industry, but
- 25:01Speaker: we'll return to the, the
- 25:03Speaker: headlines now.
- 25:04Speaker: And this is a great bit of analysis in more to trade news,
- 25:08Speaker: saying that new car finance drives strongest first half
- 25:12Speaker: recovery in almost two years.
- 25:14Speaker: And this is saying that UK
- 25:15Speaker: finance agreement volumes rose
- 25:18Speaker: eight point nine percent in the
- 25:20Speaker: first half of twenty twenty six,
- 25:22Speaker: driven by nineteen point five
- 25:24Speaker: percent increase in new car
- 25:26Speaker: finance.
- 25:26Speaker: And this is according to salary cap HPI data.
- 25:31Speaker: I think this is the first time we've seen this sort of data
- 25:33Speaker: from these guys, isn't it?
- 25:35Speaker: Yeah, I think it is.
- 25:36Speaker: Um, I don't recall seeing this before.
- 25:38Speaker: And uh, as you say, it's under the sort of market eye branding
- 25:43Speaker: from Solara cap, HP.
- 25:45Speaker: And I mean, this is such a welcome story, isn't it?
- 25:49Speaker: Just before we start on the new plate change, because it shows
- 25:54Speaker: that the UK car finance market recorded its strongest first
- 25:58Speaker: half performance in almost two years, with just over three
- 26:03Speaker: million finance agreements written during the first six
- 26:06Speaker: months of this year alone.
- 26:08Speaker: And the data shows that the
- 26:10Speaker: total agreement volumes
- 26:12Speaker: increased by eight point nine
- 26:14Speaker: percent compared compared with
- 26:16Speaker: the same period last year and
- 26:19Speaker: led by a sharp recovery in new
- 26:21Speaker: car finance.
- 26:22Speaker: So although used car finance was
- 26:25Speaker: also up, this increase was
- 26:27Speaker: really powered by new car
- 26:29Speaker: finance agreements, which were
- 26:30Speaker: actually up nineteen point five
- 26:32Speaker: percent to one point two nine
- 26:35Speaker: million during the first half of
- 26:38Speaker: the year, with June recording
- 26:40Speaker: over Two hundred and thirty four
- 26:43Speaker: thousand.
- 26:44Speaker: New car finance agreements, which.
- 26:46Speaker: That alone was up fifteen point
- 26:48Speaker: eight percent compared with June
- 26:50Speaker: last year.
- 26:52Speaker: And if you look at the the rolling twelve month average,
- 26:56Speaker: because this is quite revealing.
- 26:57Speaker: So Solara Cap buys data shows
- 27:01Speaker: that the twelve month average
- 27:03Speaker: for new car finance has
- 27:04Speaker: increased every month since
- 27:08Speaker: February twenty twenty five,
- 27:11Speaker: rising from just over one
- 27:12Speaker: hundred and seventy four
- 27:14Speaker: thousand agreements to one
- 27:16Speaker: hundred and ninety nine thousand
- 27:18Speaker: agreements by June twenty twenty
- 27:21Speaker: six.
- 27:21Speaker: And it goes on to say that this represents seventeen consecutive
- 27:25Speaker: months of growth.
- 27:26Speaker: So some really good positive news here on car finance.
- 27:30Speaker: There is yeah, it goes into a
- 27:31Speaker: little bit of detail on used car
- 27:33Speaker: finance reaching one point eight
- 27:34Speaker: four million during the first
- 27:36Speaker: half of this year, an increase
- 27:37Speaker: of two point five percent
- 27:39Speaker: compared to that same period in
- 27:40Speaker: twenty twenty five June volumes
- 27:43Speaker: rose three point four percent
- 27:44Speaker: year on year to just over three
- 27:46Speaker: hundred and two thousand
- 27:49Speaker: agreements, and the used vehicle
- 27:50Speaker: accounted for around fifty nine
- 27:53Speaker: percent of all finance
- 27:54Speaker: agreements written during the
- 27:56Speaker: first six months of the year,
- 27:59Speaker: with monthly volumes remaining
- 28:01Speaker: between two hundred and ninety
- 28:03Speaker: thousand and three hundred
- 28:04Speaker: thousand agreements.
- 28:06Speaker: That kind of links back into
- 28:07Speaker: what we talked about earlier in
- 28:08Speaker: terms of that used car
- 28:10Speaker: transactional performance that
- 28:11Speaker: we've seen in the first half of
- 28:12Speaker: this year, and what we talked
- 28:15Speaker: about last week in terms of the
- 28:16Speaker: new car results for the month of
- 28:19Speaker: July and the the full year
- 28:21Speaker: performance so far, so really
- 28:23Speaker: positive news there in terms of
- 28:26Speaker: the way the volumes that are
- 28:27Speaker: going through and that a lot of
- 28:28Speaker: it is going through that that
- 28:29Speaker: finance sector.
- 28:31Speaker: And moving on to the next story.
- 28:33Speaker: The headline comes from car dealer and it is car dealers
- 28:37Speaker: could be banned from cleaning vehicles as water board applies
- 28:41Speaker: for drought order.
- 28:43Speaker: So this is this is a story that
- 28:46Speaker: car dealer ran a really looking
- 28:48Speaker: at the south of England because
- 28:50Speaker: it says car dealers in the south
- 28:52Speaker: of England could be banned from
- 28:53Speaker: washing vehicles after a major
- 28:56Speaker: water board, southern Water,
- 28:58Speaker: applied for an official drought
- 29:00Speaker: order.
- 29:01Speaker: Now Southern Water feeds most of
- 29:03Speaker: Hampshire and the Isle of Wight,
- 29:06Speaker: and it's asked the government to
- 29:07Speaker: apply a non-essential use ban in
- 29:11Speaker: the region.
- 29:12Speaker: And the measure, which could
- 29:14Speaker: impact more than twenty seven
- 29:16Speaker: million people, would prevent
- 29:19Speaker: businesses from using mains
- 29:21Speaker: water for activities, including
- 29:24Speaker: vehicle washing.
- 29:25Speaker: In news that could result in a
- 29:27Speaker: major headache for dealers
- 29:29Speaker: across Hampshire and the Isle of
- 29:32Speaker: Wight.
- 29:33Speaker: Yeah, I think, you know, as we're recording it's you know,
- 29:37Speaker: it's going to be one of the hottest days of the year,
- 29:38Speaker: particularly down, down south.
- 29:41Speaker: It's in those mid mid thirties.
- 29:43Speaker: And obviously there's a lot of,
- 29:45Speaker: uh, problems in terms of forest
- 29:47Speaker: fires and things like this
- 29:49Speaker: taking place.
- 29:50Speaker: So there's a lot of pressure on the government.
- 29:51Speaker: And I know there's been a meeting this week and there is a
- 29:55Speaker: Cobra meeting that they've had to to review the situation.
- 29:59Speaker: So in one hand, you kind of
- 30:02Speaker: understand it with the problems
- 30:03Speaker: that we're having across the in
- 30:06Speaker: general.
- 30:07Speaker: But but, you know, these these
- 30:08Speaker: retailers will want to keep
- 30:10Speaker: these cars clean and you'll go,
- 30:12Speaker: we're walking into a, as we said
- 30:14Speaker: earlier, a crucial month of the
- 30:15Speaker: year with September new car
- 30:17Speaker: month, lots of people wanting to
- 30:18Speaker: pick up their new car all shiny
- 30:21Speaker: and clean on the first of
- 30:22Speaker: September, um, at a time where
- 30:25Speaker: it may not be able to be
- 30:27Speaker: cleaned.
- 30:28Speaker: So yeah, it's not the the best of timing, is it?
- 30:31Speaker: It's not.
- 30:32Speaker: No. And it is a point made by car dealer in the story because,
- 30:36Speaker: you know, it does say that dealers operating in the
- 30:38Speaker: affected areas covered by the proposed order, and it will have
- 30:43Speaker: a direct impact on preparation of new and used cars and
- 30:47Speaker: balloting operations and, as you say, vehicle handovers.
- 30:52Speaker: If restrictions come into force.
- 30:54Speaker: So yeah, we'll we'll watch this one closely for a bit of a break
- 30:59Speaker: for a bit of rain.
- 31:00Speaker: Yeah.
- 31:00Speaker: Who would have thought?
- 31:02Speaker: Yes.
- 31:03Speaker: So the last story, it's quite an
- 31:05Speaker: interesting one this because
- 31:06Speaker: again, it's new new data that
- 31:08Speaker: we're looking at here saying
- 31:09Speaker: that half of used car
- 31:11Speaker: dealerships show conflicting
- 31:13Speaker: hours online, saying that almost
- 31:16Speaker: half of used car dealerships are
- 31:17Speaker: displaying inconsistent opening
- 31:20Speaker: hours across their websites,
- 31:22Speaker: search engines and map listings,
- 31:24Speaker: according to research from
- 31:26Speaker: automotive software provider
- 31:28Speaker: localized.
- 31:29Speaker: This is quite interesting.
- 31:30Speaker: So they've been looking at this
- 31:31Speaker: information right across both
- 31:33Speaker: platforms.
- 31:35Speaker: Yeah it is.
- 31:36Speaker: Um, it's a good bit of research.
- 31:38Speaker: So I do urge you to check out the full story, which is is
- 31:41Speaker: actually really quite detailed.
- 31:43Speaker: And, um, it's quite, quite enlightening as well because the
- 31:46Speaker: company examined the online business information shown for
- 31:51Speaker: one hundred and ten used car dealerships across Google, Apple
- 31:56Speaker: Maps and Bing, and as well as each dealer's own website.
- 32:01Speaker: And it found that fifty three
- 32:03Speaker: dealerships, which was just
- 32:05Speaker: under fifty percent, forty eight
- 32:07Speaker: percent, displayed conflicting
- 32:10Speaker: opening times.
- 32:11Speaker: And by comparison, fifteen
- 32:13Speaker: dealerships representing
- 32:15Speaker: fourteen percent of the sample
- 32:17Speaker: had in inaccurate address
- 32:19Speaker: information.
- 32:21Speaker: Um, there was also opening hours discrepancies where were there
- 32:25Speaker: for more than three times as common as location errors.
- 32:30Speaker: Errors.
- 32:31Speaker: So this is all about sort of how good housekeeping isn't it for
- 32:36Speaker: because, uh, you know, opening hours when they change.
- 32:41Speaker: You've really got to make sure that it's changed across all
- 32:44Speaker: your online, uh, you know, platforms so that customers who
- 32:51Speaker: log in, who check you out, you possibly find a car, find the
- 32:55Speaker: dealership, they want to know when it's opened and the piece
- 32:59Speaker: goes in to say that, uh, goes on to say that, um, research from
- 33:03Speaker: Google cited, uh, that eighty six percent of smartphone users
- 33:09Speaker: conducting local searches look for those, um, opening hours
- 33:14Speaker: during their buying journey.
- 33:16Speaker: And almost half of them take further action within an hour.
- 33:20Speaker: So if the information is
- 33:21Speaker: incorrect, that's a, that's a
- 33:24Speaker: hot lead that you could be
- 33:25Speaker: losing.
- 33:26Speaker: Yeah.
- 33:26Speaker: And there's a good point made in the piece.
- 33:28Speaker: And this is from Raphael Milan,
- 33:30Speaker: that the director of localized
- 33:32Speaker: saying that when a customer
- 33:33Speaker: checks opening hours, they are
- 33:35Speaker: usually at a critical stage in
- 33:38Speaker: their buying journey, whether
- 33:40Speaker: they're planning a test drive,
- 33:42Speaker: collecting a vehicle or
- 33:44Speaker: traveling across the country to
- 33:46Speaker: view a forecourt and saying that
- 33:48Speaker: the the critical issues that
- 33:50Speaker: buyers don't blame Google or
- 33:52Speaker: Apple Maps when the doors are
- 33:54Speaker: locked.
- 33:54Speaker: Instead, they hold the
- 33:55Speaker: dealership directly accountable,
- 33:58Speaker: and by providing dealers with a
- 34:00Speaker: automated solution to keep their
- 34:03Speaker: data synchronized, they are
- 34:06Speaker: happily helping protect their
- 34:08Speaker: brand's reputation and convert
- 34:11Speaker: local search traffic into direct
- 34:14Speaker: physical sales.
- 34:15Speaker: So I think, you know, the key
- 34:16Speaker: point there is that, you know,
- 34:17Speaker: they're not going to blame
- 34:18Speaker: Google Maps if if the doors are
- 34:21Speaker: locked when they turn up to that
- 34:24Speaker: dealership, they are going to
- 34:25Speaker: blame the dealership, aren't
- 34:26Speaker: they?
- 34:26Speaker: Which isn't then creating that
- 34:28Speaker: customer service that you want
- 34:30Speaker: to deliver.
- 34:31Speaker: Yeah, it's an easy thing to get wrong, but equally, it's an easy
- 34:36Speaker: thing to get right.
- 34:37Speaker: And I think a lot of this is, is down to sort of good processes
- 34:43Speaker: being in place so that there is a member of staff, at least one
- 34:48Speaker: member of staff who has that as part of their job function to
- 34:52Speaker: make sure that any changes are updated across all platforms
- 34:57Speaker: come what may.
- 34:59Speaker: Yeah, exactly.
- 35:00Speaker: So hopefully we've again covered many of the the strong headlines
- 35:04Speaker: of this week.
- 35:05Speaker: I think, you know, crucially, the one that we're going to be
- 35:08Speaker: keeping a close eye on now is going to be the the Zev mandate.
- 35:12Speaker: Um, obviously we currently the government's in, in recess, but
- 35:16Speaker: as that starts to come back into, into normal working
- 35:21Speaker: practice, then I'm sure that this will start to, to progress.
- 35:25Speaker: Um, and again, like we said right at the start, do stay
- 35:28Speaker: tuned to your podcast feed on radio next week.
- 35:32Speaker: And hopefully we've got one or two, um, fantastic interviews
- 35:36Speaker: lined up, and there'll be more of that after the the weekend.
- 35:41Speaker: But, uh, yeah, it's, uh, lots going on, I think.
- 35:44Speaker: Curtis.
- 35:44Speaker: Yeah.
- 35:45Speaker: It's interesting you said the government's on recess because
- 35:48Speaker: it doesn't feel like it doesn't feel like it, does it?
- 35:51Speaker: There's so much activity at the
- 35:53Speaker: moment in the sort of political
- 35:55Speaker: arena which, uh, inevitably, um,
- 35:57Speaker: sort of brims over into our
- 36:00Speaker: area.
- 36:00Speaker: So yeah, we'll keep tabs on everything and keep you updated
- 36:04Speaker: next week on what's going on.
