- 6:08who've almost Also been making waves and signing a number of
- 6:11new players for the season ahead.
- 6:13So, yeah, although it's the sort of offseason for footballer.
- 6:16So to speak at the moment, there's plenty going on in that
- 6:18particular sport are kind of offseason doesn't exist anymore
- 6:21because remember when I was growing up way back in the 80s
- 6:23going to school in that and that that end of football season used
- 6:27to be a dread. And you think I'll go it's just
- 6:29nothing for a couple of months at least unless there's a World
- 6:31Cup or Euros on whatever but now it's just it's just seems yes.
- 6:35Okay, the playing side is slightly reduced but there's
- 6:37always something happening. I know the way the media is
- 6:40these days it's more in your face and that but you don't feel
- 6:43like that the seasons sort of as finished as a speaker.
- 6:46You look at the Champions League final that only finished what
- 6:48early June first weekend in June suddenly the league one and
- 6:51League, two, and Championship players are all back for
- 6:53pre-season training this week, over the weekend as well.
- 6:56And then you've got, you know, all the other sports taking part
- 6:58in our city as well. We've mentioned Cricket there as
- 7:01wheelchair rugby, there's Athletics going on in the city.
- 7:04So, there's plenty of sport in the city and it's great that
- 7:06everybody takes part where they can at whatever ability.
- 7:08They've got yeah exactly that's the beauty of our wonderful
- 7:11City. There's something for everybody
- 7:13at whatever Talent OR level or whatever you want to partake.
- 7:16It's yeah, indeed. And I know, you know, taking
- 7:19talks a lot to page for a Town Sports Club over the over the
- 7:22last few months and years as well.
- 7:23Number of activities, they're Park row of just mentioned with
- 7:27our guests before we started this evening as well.
- 7:29So there's opportunities out there for people to take part in
- 7:31sport, whatever level, whether it be on a social level, or if
- 7:35they're good enough, and want to progress at a high level, The
- 7:39locally regionally and nationally, absolutely

- 11:02We're in in the in the accompaniment of Heron and
- 11:05pulling Smith from CTC Peterborough.
- 11:07Cycling Club Peter good evening sir.
- 11:10Good evening. Welcome to the show.
- 11:13Thank you for coming in this evening.
- 11:16So, CTC Peterborough tell us more about that.
- 11:19In terms of, I mean, what does the name?
- 11:21What a CTC stand for? So there was a national club
- 11:24called the cycle touring club, which has since changed its
- 11:28name, but we didn't change our name because it just worked.
- 11:33So they now called cycling UK. And there, the UK's biggest
- 11:36cycling charity and they have a member groups up and down the
- 11:40country and where the Peterborough branch of that.
- 11:42So, people are either this members of that National
- 11:46Charity, which which campaigns for better conditions for
- 11:49cyclists and lobbies the government.
- 11:52Etc, for to improve improve things for cycling, both locally
- 11:56and nationally burning that sounds good.
- 11:58So obviously you've got, you've got the local responsibility I
- 12:01guess in terms of I'm say you as a person individually.
- 12:03But in terms of you was a club in responsible for running it
- 12:07locally but then you obviously backed by a more National body.
- 12:10That's that's your third party, Insurance things like that.
- 12:13It's quite important. So yes.
- 12:15Yeah. We got taxes space on the
- 12:19website, Etc, publicize ourselves, so, and members get
- 12:24sort of discounts in bike shops and stuff as well from from
- 12:26belonging to them. So there's a few benefits as
- 12:29well as just helping helping them to solve campaign for
- 12:32cycling, okay? Before we find out more about
- 12:34the club, let's find out bit about yourselves individually.
- 12:37So in your case Peter, so what, sure, sort of background in
- 12:40terms of what got you to where you are now, in terms of being
- 12:43part of the club, how long have you been into cycling?
- 12:45And And so yeah I started sight for him as a teenager really
- 12:49start taking it seriously never I guess as will tell you more
- 12:53about the club but I've never really been into racing.
- 12:55I'm not super fast but I just love the freedom of being on a
- 12:58bicycle in the countryside and it's a great way to explore the
- 13:01world and lucky to have a wife as into that as well.
- 13:05And then about 10 11 years ago, that guy set this local group of
- 13:11cycling UK up and I just started going with.
- 13:15It might It's were teenagers by then.
- 13:17They didn't really want me to spend any time in the dad
- 13:19anymore, you know. So I was off on my bike and
- 13:23yeah, it's been a real success. We started with just a handful
- 13:26of us and it's built up to being, you know, a regular
- 13:28fixture you think. I think it's been about 12 years
- 13:30the club's been going. Now, we've got quite a regular
- 13:33members and we run to write a week and I work, so I can only
- 13:38go on the weekend, right? But yeah, I'm out nearly every
- 13:41week with the club and it's just become a big part of my life.
- 13:43Fantastic sounds really good, Paulie, let me bring you in
- 13:45here. Welcome to the show.
- 13:47Pauline, thank you, and thanks for coming in this evening.
- 13:50Tell us a little bit about yourself in terms of your
- 13:51background in cycling and why you join the club.
- 13:54Well, I've just looked back since I was a really little girl
- 13:58to me. They've always represented
- 13:59freedom and means of getting around so transport but also
- 14:03exploring and going out and seeing the countryside touring
- 14:07all over the place. So I've had all manner of bikes.
- 14:12Over the years are different phases in my life, I've taught
- 14:16Also countries, but living in Peterborough.
- 14:20It's not near any big mountains. Thankfully, my other passion in
- 14:24life, okay? But it's got lots of really nice
- 14:28country lines. It's ideal Countryside for
- 14:30cycling out in the countryside. So and I've been a member of the
- 14:34cyclists touring Club as it originally was called, since I
- 14:38was again, quite young since I was in my twenties.
- 14:41So it was natural to kind of go rejoin, the the club and then
- 14:44look for a local group. I'm doing riding around here and
- 14:48I've been involved in various iterations of this local group.
- 14:51But the latest one I've been involved in for about the last
- 14:55sort of eight or nine years and I think you've mentioned there's
- 14:59no mountains snot really hilly around here.
- 15:02What about the other fact of the wind, you know, going out
- 15:04towards the fence potentially is that a challenge in itself?
- 15:07If it proves, it's another challenge for you as an it as
- 15:10opposed to climbing, climbing Hills.
- 15:12Well, it's nice actually flat round here when it comes Riding
- 15:16a bike. Okay, same discover.
- 15:17I have got this little area called the Rutland Alps, okay, I
- 15:22think I've heard of ya, people jokingly say, because it is
- 15:26quite some quite sharp hills around there, but they're not
- 15:29really very long Hills. Not compared to the big
- 15:31mountains, but the phones are on a bit of an acquired taste.
- 15:34You need a. Not too windy day for the fans.
- 15:36Really most of our rights Head West.
- 15:41Take a look at the weather forecast.
- 15:42First, there's the see which way the wind is coming in.
- 15:44We, we tend to avoid Cycles. Lynne.
- 15:46So when the whale so you get blown home when you're a bit
- 15:48more tired. Yeah, it's just simple logic.
- 15:50Yeah, I've heard that quite often actually people to look at
- 15:53the weather forecast first and see where the what the wind
- 15:56direction is first of all and take it from there first, as
- 16:00well. So seems a sensible way of doing
- 16:02it. I'm definitely in cycled in this
- 16:06afternoon this evening as well. Haven't you as well?
- 16:08Yeah. Yeah, we're really locally so is
- 16:10easiest way to get here. Yeah.
- 16:12Brilliant. Yes.
- 16:13Setting standard has you mean to carry on?
- 16:16Some. Okay, let's talk about the club.
- 16:17You mentioned briefly there as you as you give us an intro.
- 16:20There there Peters that clustering around about 12 years
- 16:24or in this current sort of iteration known as the city
- 16:28touring Club. Although he has got a nickname
- 16:30as well based on the kind of activities you do when you're
- 16:32out on your bike. So tell us more about in terms
- 16:36of what how do the events or all the routes or if you call them
- 16:41event. How does it take place?
- 16:42You said there's two to it to a week so there's two writes about
- 16:45on a site and then the weekend Saturday Sunday depending on
- 16:51which we choose and then some we've got volunteer ride leaders
- 16:55on one of those rides leaders and we set us up take it in
- 16:59turns to lead a ride and so it's actually my turn this weekend.
- 17:03I'm taking right on Sunday. So I've just looked at the wind
- 17:06as we discuss and I picked a cafe in the right direction and
- 17:10I just published that ride on Facebook.
- 17:13So you were going out and people to sign up You know, if they're
- 17:16not on Facebook, they can text text me, let me know.
- 17:19A lot of the members are on Facebook and just yeah, people
- 17:22will turn up. We go go out in the morning ride
- 17:26for a about four or five hours, Stop halfway Our Cafe, and it's
- 17:31a real emphasis on sociable riding.
- 17:33So there's a lot of clubs cycling clubs in the city.
- 17:36If you want to erase or go really fast, but as I think,
- 17:39we've just described a background, we like to see the
- 17:41countryside have a bit of company and a big emphasis on on
- 17:46A cup of coffee and a bit of cake halfway, really vital.
- 17:50So it's all about having fun. And, yeah, we're quite, I think
- 17:55most of us quite fit, but we're not kind of athletes, you know,
- 17:58we're just normal fit. So yeah, you mentioned parkrun
- 18:01and it's a bit more like, you know, you might going to parkrun
- 18:03Keen fit, you're not going to be taking part in athletics events,
- 18:07you know, none of us are doing that.
- 18:09We just out enjoying ourselves on our bikes and it's really
- 18:12nice to have some company. Yeah, it's great for you mental.
- 18:14Well-being, I guess as well as - yeah.
- 18:17You know, you're going to be looking forward to on a Sunday,
- 18:19Come rain or shine or do numbers drop off a bit hesitant.
- 18:23They're the only thing that really stops as a.
- 18:26It's, I see ya. It's not safe.
- 18:28Yeah, ice then, we were tied. Yeah, we cycle you around.
- 18:31Yeah, we have rights all through the winter.
- 18:34Yeah, we cancel a few in a very extreme weather, generally, just
- 18:39wrap up more and once you get going, you know, it's great.
- 18:42So obviously some as much nicer tend to do perhaps opposite No
- 18:46longer rights in the summer when it's more Daylight but yeah
- 18:49we're out all year round to do is ride leader.
- 18:52Then how do you plan a route then like you say, may be taken
- 18:55whether or wind direction to account slightly, but how do you
- 18:57sort of think? Okay, I'm we're going to do x
- 19:00amount of miles today. This is Direction want to go to.
- 19:02Yeah, it's this Cafe is nice cake, and coffee or we've got,
- 19:05we've got an encyclopedic. Knowledge of all local people
- 19:08because there is a cafe and then I just use, I use an online free
- 19:15bit of software. To draw a route that gives me an
- 19:18exact mileage and and then I can store that on a bike computer
- 19:22like a GPX file. You know, if you've heard of
- 19:24those and and that tells me where to go and what I'm out on
- 19:28the bike so I don't get lost and yeah, I know a lot of the roads
- 19:31anyway. Now I've been riding on them for
- 19:33years and then so unless the same with other Riley this.
- 19:36So and then I'll just, you know, make sure that the writers tend
- 19:40to be typically around 45 miles perhaps and then once a month
- 19:44would perhaps do a longer ride. The so it's just planning a
- 19:48cafe. That's roughly 20 miles away,
- 19:50right route ride out to it, have a break and then right back and
- 19:54you know we used to get quite a good number.
- 19:56Come out testing. Do you have to warn the caffeine
- 19:58advance? So there's going to be X number
- 20:00of us going to be dropping in on you there's 10 or 12 of us.
- 20:03You know. Cafes going to struggle to cope
- 20:05with that if they don't know. So yeah, I've already messaged
- 20:08the cafe for this weekend and they said, oh great, you know,
- 20:10would expect you. So, you know, it gives them a
- 20:13heads up about, obviously a lot of the cafes are An outside
- 20:16klister, you know, there's a lot of soccer clubs in the area and
- 20:19not just in Peterborough that use these cafes and they really
- 20:23keep them in business, you know? Yeah.
- 20:24How early did you start sort of morning?
- 20:26We start at 9 on the weekends. Okay, I'm a lion then and then
- 20:32Wednesday's that's it. They start at 10 just to miss
- 20:34the school run, my my and the rush hour, you know.
- 20:37Yeah course since you know, so because most of the guys on
- 20:40Wednesday on working so, you know, there are less of a rush.
- 20:42So yeah, they can take it easy some girls on Wednesdays.
- 20:45As well. Speak up for them falling.
- 20:48I said, absolutely not. No very good turnout of women
- 20:56Riders. Yeah.
- 20:57And all ages as well. Would you say or is it a little
- 20:59bit little bit older in terms of?
- 21:01Yeah, right. I just promised, it's a little
- 21:04bit older as yeah, I guess a lot of the younger guys will be in
- 21:07the racing clubs, you know, and girls it really is.
- 21:11It's a matter of what kind of cycling appeals to people.
- 21:13I mean we've had sort of younger, right?
- 21:16Does we've been member since? We were younger?
- 21:18I felt so it's not exclusive but there's a bit of a tendency that
- 21:24is Pete sighs. Younger people have perhaps
- 21:26especially young guys and more into the kind of go faster thing
- 21:29and we're not into speed particularly we just about
- 21:32enjoying being together out on a ride and do you find events such
- 21:38as? Let's go from the extremes here?
- 21:40From Tour de France to the more local National events.
- 21:45Cycling events. Do you find that people sort of
- 21:47pick up on them and think? Yeah, I'd like to have a go at
- 21:50this and you sort of talk to one or two people and get them
- 21:53involved. I guess they generate interest
- 21:57in cycling generally but I suppose people who are really
- 22:01inspired within might go out with a racing Club, I don't
- 22:04know, but a lot of our members are like watching those.
- 22:07I usually watch the Tour de France and when it's on telly,
- 22:09you know. So I think there's interest it
- 22:11all generates interest in cycling, but obviously cycling
- 22:14is a really Broad really broad support from from people who
- 22:18are, you know, racing right through to people who just write
- 22:20to The Shops. And and so, you know, we're
- 22:24definitely not out of the race again, but we are.
- 22:26Definitely, I suppose, you know, I talked to people who don't
- 22:29cycle myself cycle, 40 miles and I think, wow, that's, that's a
- 22:32long way. But it is, you know, for
- 22:34cyclists. It's not, it's quite easy to do
- 22:36that. Once you've got a coffee break
- 22:37yet saying, yeah, and I think, you know, most reasonably fit,
- 22:41adults can easily could easily do what we do, if they got into
- 22:44it, you know. It's good.
- 22:46Make some sounds good. Right.
- 22:47Let's take a short break. There will be back with Peter

- 25:09and we'll have a chat to you about it.
- 25:11So right back to this evenings guests.
- 25:14In the studio with us. Peter Heron and Pauline Smith
- 25:16from the cycling touring Club in Peterborough.
- 25:19It's the social based Cycling Club.
- 25:20This has been telling us a little bit about what they do,
- 25:23have the operate and just ask you guys.
- 25:26So, obviously, if there's people out there listening, you,
- 25:28perhaps want to get involved in cycling and like that, it's more
- 25:31on a social basis rather than that Competitive Edge, how can
- 25:36they get in touch or what, what do they need to do?
- 25:39So, yeah, we've got a website, it's a just Google, CTC
- 25:42Peterborough or wrong. On Facebook as well.
- 25:44So quite a few people join us on Facebook and can message on
- 25:48there or if they can email me through the website, I'll get
- 25:51back to them, speak to them on the phone, people around me,
- 25:54sometimes ask you know, if they can come out with us what we ask
- 25:58details about what it's like, you know, and I'll give them all
- 26:00the details to reassure them and yeah.
- 26:02So it's very easy to get in touch with us exit up.
- 26:05And once they start to engage and they're enrolled, what can
- 26:09they expect? How'd they get the chance to
- 26:11sort of dip their toe in it so to speak or what?
- 26:13What what They're kind of onboarding process.
- 26:15So, yeah, people people who are not members of national Club can
- 26:18come out with us for up to three times and the club insurance
- 26:22cover them for that. So as a guest Rider and then,
- 26:26you know, I'll explain to them roughly the pace and what we're
- 26:30going to be doing, but we don't leave people behind so if
- 26:33they're struggling a little bit will slow down, make sure they
- 26:35can keep up, you know, and I think people sometimes a bit
- 26:40nervous that, you know, we're doing 40 miles but actually if
- 26:43you can Do 10 or 20, you can very easily 40 and you find when
- 26:46you enter a group chat into people, then I'll still go by
- 26:49quickly and we were stopped halfway for, you know, for a
- 26:52break. So that, that sort of makes it a
- 26:54lot easier breaks it up. So, yeah, I think people are are
- 26:58pleasantly surprised when you come as how.
- 26:59It's not as hard as they thought.
- 27:01Okay, sounds good. And obviously other than a bike,
- 27:04what's the kind of minimum equipment?
- 27:05Someone would need perhaps to join the club helmet.
- 27:14It's probably a good idea to wear home is not compulsory.
- 27:17Most of our members do wear them but personal choice that the
- 27:19club doesn't insist on it. Okay.
- 27:23It's on National or I thought you, I thought cycling helmet
- 27:25has become a national. No, no, it's personal choice.
- 27:30We do choose to most of us just because, you know, it's a bit of
- 27:34protection insurance. But no, mainly a reasonably
- 27:40well, looked after bike probably recommend a pair of cycling
- 27:43shorts. Just because you know it's a bit
- 27:44more comfortable, padded ones. Yeah and beyond that but that's
- 27:50about it, we'll just start and you know people then learn good
- 27:54thing about being in a club you can speak to people find out
- 27:57what you need. You know people then get more
- 28:00kit at end up finding that's like twins.
- 28:02Not that cheaper sport because you always wanted to buy
- 28:04something new but there's always better by absolutely.
- 28:09So it doesn't take too much to start with.
- 28:11Don't need a great deal and I guess if somebody's Who already
- 28:14owns a bike? Presumably there I go out and
- 28:16about on a bike and go whether they ride to work or just you
- 28:18know socially or whatever. Do so they used to perhaps being
- 28:22out about anyway. So this is more of an extension
- 28:24of that. I guess if there's people out
- 28:25there who have never ridden, all rode a bike ages ago.
- 28:28For example, I want to get back into it.
- 28:29Then that's a different challenge to somebody.
- 28:31Perhaps already owns a bike. Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't
- 28:33recommend a come out with ass if they've done right at all,
- 28:35little bit of a battle, I'd say, you know, but if someone can
- 28:39ride on their own and get out to perhaps about 20 miles and then
- 28:41they're ready to give it a Try I think because then that, as I
- 28:45say, it's 20 miles to the cafe and then you have a rest and
- 28:47it's 20 miles back. In is surprisingly, it's not
- 28:50that hard to do if you can ride 20 miles, it's quite easy to
- 28:52write 40. Yes, okay.
- 28:55And in terms of the existing membership group, how many
- 28:57people are members of the group already?
- 29:01I think we've got about 50 to 60 looking at regular members, and
- 29:05normal turnout. It is perhaps about ten or
- 29:07twelve on a ride. If we get a lot more than that,
- 29:10it's a bit difficult to, you know, you don't want to clog the
- 29:13roads up. Very difficult for cars to get
- 29:15past this excetera. So that's our normal size of
- 29:19rider. That's we've had occasionally,
- 29:21have numbers above 20 on the rides, but as you're saying
- 29:24cafes struggle, then to get us all through, but that's the sort
- 29:27of regular membership. Obviously, not everyone's free
- 29:29for every ride, so you just sort of rotation.
- 29:32If you had a few new members coming on at the same time,
- 29:35would you organize a special ride, just for new members?
- 29:38May be a shorter one? Or is that just kind of you just
- 29:40do it on a case-by-case basis and see what your situation is
- 29:43Hollywood? We have done that in the past, I
- 29:46think, you know if for example if we've got a bit of response
- 29:48to this program that more people wanting to kind of try us out
- 29:52and were nervous about the distances, then we try and talk
- 29:55no fit in a monk's. The ride leaders, try and fit in
- 29:59doing a slightly shorter ride to a slightly newer Cafe.
- 30:02Then you know say we won't go quite as fast and let not.
- 30:05We go very fast but see you know how it goes for people.
- 30:09Yeah, so yeah. Okay.
- 30:11So are we obviously has flexibility there for People
- 30:13deserve enroll in the right way that they feel comfortable
- 30:16about. Definitely.
- 30:17Yeah, but it's the same with new people coming along.
- 30:20As with the regular members, everybody's got busy lives and
- 30:23it can be quite difficult to know, find a date that's going
- 30:25to work for people. Yes.
- 30:27Yeah. And in terms of you rides, then
- 30:30do they always set off from the same place in Peter or does it
- 30:33depend on which direction you're traveling from to where the star
- 30:35pointer occasionally? We've are it sometimes will do
- 30:38an away day like we start saying it's or something just so try
- 30:42some different roads and you can get the train down or drive down
- 30:45there but mostly we start from what was right in Cycles.
- 30:49It's tightly closed down now but we're still starting there
- 30:51that's are near the entrance to the fairy Meadows on hemline and
- 30:55that's quite a short ride then to get out of the city on to the
- 30:58Country Roads. So we meet up there, the agreed
- 31:03to start time and then ready for just a cycle out.
- 31:06Along usually along the railroad or possibly it one of the other
- 31:09way, South through fairy Meadows.
- 31:11And yeah, get out into the country road.
- 31:13Just beautiful roads around Pittsburgh.
- 31:16I'm just looking down your Facebook page actually.
- 31:18Here it's looking at some of your roots that you've been
- 31:20taken and to say it's very much a social activities
- 31:23understatement really isn't any and all I'm seeing a lot here is
- 31:27pictures of cake. I'll be shops and plenty of
- 31:31smiles as well. You know, really seems to be
- 31:33enjoying themselves and such a social occasion that you've
- 31:36created here in this club, you see, you know, depicts breasts
- 31:39are. So it's got a number of cycle
- 31:40clips that are all training for things and going, Seriously and
- 31:45we're just psyched about me and cake.
- 31:47So I'm gonna Focus, please. Yeah, yeah.
- 31:49We move into a bakeries coffee shops Farm shop.
- 31:52So yeah, it's very much an enjoyable activity is.
- 31:57Yeah, cracking stuff. Obviously mentioned CT, CT, C
- 32:01stands for cycling touring Club, but there is a nickname.
- 32:04I can see it on your jersey. Peter, what's the nickname of
- 32:06other links into what an election has been saying?
- 32:08The joke is coffee tea and Coke, possibly Cafe to Cafe.
- 32:13I see that. That is the main emphasis year.
- 32:16Everybody's like, where's the cafe this week?
- 32:18Yeah. I'll actually while you were why
- 32:20we talked about cafes and, and for those who know not
- 32:23necessary, just cycling. But if people are out and about
- 32:25in the region then are there any good cafes that you'd recommend
- 32:29in in the region? Yeah.
- 32:31Some excellent little cafes out and about I'm trying to think
- 32:35all of them. Probably you don't have singling
- 32:39out. It's on the a43 actually, but
- 32:44you can get to on a quiet road called a new large farm.
- 32:47That's really popular as a campsite there.
- 32:49There's a new one opened up. Just not far from our company
- 32:52called Holly Lodge. Where they also have dog
- 32:54walking. This, a people exercise their
- 32:57dogs. Yeah.
- 32:59That there's a quite a few and obviously, you can ride up to a
- 33:01mound or Scott, coffee shops and Stamford places like that.
- 33:04And if we're feeling a bit, a bit more Brave, a token places,
- 33:07though, the lots of the smaller towns fraps done.
- 33:10There's a cafe, so you can just cycle out those smaller.
- 33:13Townsend and enjoy a coffee. They're saying, Ives, and when
- 33:17she recently, by three, Soleus is a cycling Cafe.
- 33:19There is nice and T meet up with other cycling clubs as well,
- 33:24potentially, as sort of, sort of group, get-togethers or meet at
- 33:28coffee shops. And then really, we always
- 33:30bumping into other contact, the Cafe's because they were about
- 33:32the same kind and you bring a head, don't you?
- 33:36I guess. Yes.
- 33:36Yeah we always tend to let the cafe know.
- 33:39Yeah, they're not swamped but it can be quite interesting because
- 33:42here you go to a If a that's relatively in the middle of
- 33:45nowhere and when you get there, the recycling groups that have
- 33:47arrived from all different directions.
- 33:49So yeah, we'll kind of see groups of come out from Bedford.
- 33:52From Kettering, if we head North Woods we might meet groups that
- 33:55have come out from Nottingham. So we're not specifically
- 33:59planning to meet them but it is quite fun, you know, to sort of
- 34:01see the way cyclists converge on Country Cafe.
- 34:06This kind of this Clique not Clique but kind of a suppose not
- 34:11someone. Call it a secret club either but
- 34:12it's I'm sorry. In the fraternity of cycling.
- 34:15There's obviously this thing about going cafes and absolutely
- 34:18lips tend to Coffee. You know, cyclists in the coffee
- 34:22is a big thing with cyclists. Yeah, it's the caffeine and the
- 34:25energy they give you to continue in terms of any sort of
- 34:31memorable trips that you've done.
- 34:32Any favorite trips, you have that or writes that you've done
- 34:35in the area? Any ones that stick out for you,
- 34:37that you think I'd look forward to that one.
- 34:39Yeah, we've done some some nice away days so I think Cambridge
- 34:42to have that, Solar system way, they're like, a few months back
- 34:46last year, wasn't it? Oh, yes, yeah.
- 34:48And one of my guys organized that so we add a sort of the way
- 34:51they drove down to the, the guided busway cup akise knives
- 34:56and then cycled into Cambridge. And that was really nice.
- 35:00Just just some different roads. I don't know.
- 35:04Last year, we organized a way trip as well down to Ken.
- 35:08There's a cycling UK who we belong to of done, some national
- 35:12roots, I've done this one called a can tra way that the kind of
- 35:16jobs an ancient tribe in Kent and I believe and it's stuff.
- 35:19180 mile Route Around. Okay, so we did that, over two
- 35:22days 160 miles. I think I missed growing but
- 35:26hey, it was a tick. Tock is an awful lot.
- 35:30Stay tuned. We stayed in a hotel in, in
- 35:33Dover and destroy that. Say, it was, it was really nice.
- 35:36Yeah, really exciting. Except so, I was glad you
- 35:38mentioned obviously away days and then that I was going to ask
- 35:41was going to ask actually, do you know you've got things.
- 35:43Things like the London to Brighton rides and presuming.
- 35:46There's other rides like that in the country.
- 35:48Are there ones in this region? That are of that ilk, you know,
- 35:50they're kind of specialized rides or the ride.
- 35:53I think I've had the last one this year salary but the right
- 35:55ride came but she was running out of the show ground so quite
- 35:57a few of our members took part in that.
- 35:59So that that was a really good event.
- 36:01I think think with the showground closing I think they
- 36:04decided not to pursue its really.
- 36:08Yeah I think there's there's been some national rights
- 36:13Lincoln as well, which I've taken part in one of those.
- 36:15So you can go along and sign up for like a what they call a
- 36:18sportive, which is like it is for the non competitive
- 36:22Competitive Cyclist, if you're not.
- 36:23I mean, it's that they have like a proper road race and then the
- 36:26next day they had, like the amateurs.
- 36:27Have a go. So, there's things like that you
- 36:29can do. Yeah, brilliant.
- 36:32And do you ever do kind of one-off say, longer rides that I
- 36:36don't, perhaps, you're raising money for charity or enter to
- 36:39Mark certain times times a year. Anything like that.
- 36:41Yeah, do it, do it. We've done a few nitrides.
- 36:45So you start in the middle of night cycle, through the night
- 36:47though. So I think we haven't done one
- 36:50since covid actually bit where we cycled down to London over
- 36:53the night, and then got the early train back.
- 36:55So that's quite fun because the roads are pretty quiet.
- 36:57I don't mind in the middle of summer when the yeah in London.
- 37:06And I think you mentioned earlier about someone who, And
- 37:13was riding the coast to coast. We chase the Sun.
- 37:17So a few of us in the club of done, that, that's a 200-mile
- 37:21Coast-to-Coast, ride the hands of this time of year, learish,
- 37:23that things happening this weekend.
- 37:26So what part of the countries that goes to goes?
- 37:27Where would you do that? I did one from time mouth to, to
- 37:31the air and Scotland. And this also one that goes from
- 37:34from, I think Essex across to the West Coast.
- 37:39So that's like a, quite a commitment to hundred miles in
- 37:43from the Dawn till Dusk. You have to try and get you have
- 37:45to do in one day. Yeah a trying to get there from
- 37:47sunrise and get there before the sun sets.
- 37:49Yeah. Wow.
- 37:51And so the chase the sun he took talking of rides and again just
- 38:00looking down your Facebook page a which is absolutely fabulous
- 38:02just to read the positive comments and engagement that
- 38:05you've got there with everybody and Monopoly ride Monopoly on
- 38:09the month and ride. Is that some think but is
- 38:13anything Thing, two of them knobbly board game or anything
- 38:15like that. So I've got to be honest, I
- 38:16don't really learn that. Okay, that's fine.
- 38:18Is that rude involved order or the order sort of value?
- 38:22The destinations are on the Run Monopoly board.
- 38:24Maybe maybe maybe. Yeah, there's something Central
- 38:26London ride. Yeah, something like that.
- 38:28That was just looking down here. But yeah, there's plenty of cake
- 38:30and coffee pictures on here. That's for sure.
- 38:32We're live. Good stuff, right?
- 38:34Let's take one more break there, and we'll be back in a moment.
- 38:36You listen to pcrm, It's just gone 6:45.
- 38:40Which one do you prefer this one or this one?
- 38:46Hmm, more and more children are getting measles.
- 38:49It's highly infectious and can be very serious but the safest
- 38:52way to guard against it is with two doses of the MMR vaccine.
- 38:56It's never too late to protect your child.
- 38:58So for more details about how the MMR vaccine can stop this,

- 40:53pulling Smith from the city. Sorry from the cycling tour in
- 40:56club as I mentioned. So again, just a reminder for
- 41:02the listeners or if anyone's join the show late, if anyone is
- 41:04interested in joining up with a club and wants to take up
- 41:07cycling more on a social basis, or on a competitive basis.
- 41:10So what can they do, what they need to do?
- 41:12So yeah, just get in contact with this on our website.
- 41:15If the Google City, see Peterborough or our Paige just
- 41:19look it up on, they're probably very easy to get in touch with
- 41:21us on Facebook, just messages. And or they can they can email
- 41:25me through the the website and we'll get in touch.
- 41:29And I know you are responsive because I messaged you for this
- 41:32show and you are back to me very quickly so I can certainly vouch
- 41:35for that. And in terms of the is a kind of
- 41:41age restrictions running on the memberships that you have what
- 41:44what kinds of kinds of types of people can join.
- 41:47We have all sorts of Members young older, middle-aged know
- 41:53male female yes different sort of diversity of basis and
- 41:58everything else. Yeah.
- 42:00So put everyone in here but we do know.
- 42:02Welcome people whatever I say if I love bicycles it's one of the
- 42:06great things about cycling. As you've got that common
- 42:08interest and you it's one of the nice things about the group.
- 42:11As you meet, all sorts of different people from different
- 42:14walks of life and different backgrounds.
- 42:16And you've got that shared love of riding a bike.
- 42:18But he's important just stipulate that you write our up
- 42:22to around 40 miles when you do them.
- 42:23So, it's got to be someone who's relatively practiced on a bike.
- 42:26Isn't it? That the the yeah, we're not a
- 42:28flute beginners. Yes, we would sort of say, you
- 42:31know, make sure you. You've got a reasonable bike.
- 42:34It's in running order, the tires are pumped up and you've got a
- 42:37little bit of repair kit, although we do have one of the
- 42:39nice things of riding with a group is that you do have people
- 42:42around you, if you have 0. So lucky as to have a puncture,
- 42:44there's lots of hands to help you fix it.
- 42:47But yeah, people do need to be We probably able to ride sort of
- 42:5020-ish miles and feel, they can do that and then come out with
- 42:54us and you'll find it's easy to do much more.
- 42:57I was gonna ask how you raised the point.
- 42:58They're actually about obviously punchers, or maybe bikes
- 43:01breaking down Howard. You kind of cope with that.
- 43:02And obviously, you'll have a lot of experience and with people
- 43:05who are perhaps Hands-On with bikes, but most of us will cut
- 43:08carrier, you know, an inner tube and a pump, you know, and a
- 43:11futile leaders and stuff. But yeah, there's a couple of
- 43:14guys in the club on one of them is bit more into fixing bikes so
- 43:18we're using Don't weave, occasionally had the odd
- 43:20Mechanicals, very rare don't get many punctures even you know,
- 43:22actually ties these days are really good.
- 43:24And, you know, you don't get many punctures, but if you do,
- 43:27we'll fix it. You know, we've had odd.
- 43:30Things chains breaking on things but we've managed to fix it and
- 43:32get people home. And so there's usually somebody
- 43:34on the ride and the right leaders are usually pretty good
- 43:37will help you out. If anyone's having difficulties
- 43:39always waiting for people, you know we don't we don't drop
- 43:42anyone leaving behind we're not that sort of Club so you know
- 43:45we're will all stop and watch. If someone has a puncture, you
- 43:47know, And how quick you can you change a tire or fix a poncho,
- 43:52is it isn't a Formula 1. You have to really get into and
- 43:54try and doing the quickest time possible.
- 43:58We go as fast as become but yeah, I guess it takes 10-15
- 44:00minutes, usually, and if anyone knew joining in, you mentioned,
- 44:05obviously have a bike that's in good working condition.
- 44:08For any particular type of bike is preferable to another mean,
- 44:11you know, somebody rocking up on a BMX perhaps wouldn't will
- 44:13struggle riding 40 miles one they are mostly riding riding
- 44:17sort of road bikes. Yeah, We've had a few people,
- 44:19come out with this start on hybrid.
- 44:21It's Uptown bikes are a little bit heavier and the find it a
- 44:26bit hard going. So we recommend, you know, Vine.
- 44:29You don't have to spend a fortune but a reasonably good
- 44:32quality road bikes ideal. Most people are riding thanks
- 44:36with those sort of drop bars like that.
- 44:38People call them races, but they're not.
- 44:39Yeah, not really for racing. Only, they're quite comfortable
- 44:42for long distances and and they're nice and light.
- 44:44So you don't take so much effort to get there and what at
- 44:47mountain bikes what they do. The job or not really a bit
- 44:50tough because they're heavy and the tires are wide.
- 44:53And yeah, it would be pretty hard work to do what we're
- 44:55doing. And I think, you know, most
- 44:56mountain bikes are not doing 40 miles to use it in a shorter
- 45:00distances on rough tracks, you know.
- 45:02So, so you could be a bit of a battle indeed.
- 45:06Indeed, and conduct with us, you'd find choosing to change
- 45:10your bicycle quite rapidly. Yeah, we had a guy.
- 45:13We've had several people join, and they write them quite
- 45:15ordinary bikes with hybrids, or kind of lightweight mountain
- 45:18bikes and That you find. If they stick with us, their
- 45:20thoughts quickly talking to all the guys in the club back.
- 45:24What kind of bike do I need? And upgrading to kind of a
- 45:28slightly faster barks, it's going to be easier to do the
- 45:31kind of riding we do because we're not going off road.
- 45:33There might be a little bit of gravel, but we're normally
- 45:36riding on tarmac. So you want a bike that sort of
- 45:39able to go Fairly kind of easily on tarmac?
- 45:41Yes, it's terrain smooth, isn't it?
- 45:43Most part. So you want that outside bike?
- 45:45Tours are potholes obviously. Yeah, there was a guy say.
- 45:48It's bad enough. Driving around some of the areas
- 45:50around here pretty rough in places but yeah, generally it's
- 45:54comfortable. We're not we're not riding big
- 45:56big room country of tracks or anything, you know.
- 45:59So yeah. So yeah, you're okay in that
- 46:01sense, dude. I mean, in terms of the, the
- 46:05club itself that the organizational structure, how
- 46:07does that operate? You have like a chairperson
- 46:09secretary kind of person type of setup pauling's, actually first,
- 46:13okay, tell us about the club in the structure.
- 46:16Okay. Well, as Pete said, All in the
- 46:18program with I'd like all branch of or Affiliated to a National
- 46:23Association but are kind of particular Peterborough Branch
- 46:26we have a chair a secretary or Treasurer and then most
- 46:30importantly a kind of a ride lead organizer and a whole bunch
- 46:33of people who are ride leaders. Yes and that's the core of the
- 46:36club is the people the guys and girls who lead the rides and
- 46:43we're not really very formal. I mean we have an AGM once a
- 46:45year you know, every so often we choose a new chair.
- 46:48New secretary and everything, but the main structure of it is,
- 46:52you know, Pete does a lot of work as the secretary to keep
- 46:54the information flow going the ride lead, organizer make sure
- 46:58the ride leaders are yo programmed in.
- 47:01So there's somebody to lead a ride every weekend and otherwise
- 47:06we're just sort of, you know, get on with it.
- 47:08So that's, that's really the structure.
- 47:10Yeah. So quite a supported by cycling
- 47:12UK and we got a couple of members who are really good
- 47:15publicist, like you said, on our Facebook pages, Bolted and Jamal
- 47:20who are always taking pictures and posting on there and a few
- 47:22other members as well. So people are always posting
- 47:25pictures on the site, so, helps or publicize it and, you know, I
- 47:30think it's a true reflection. Yeah.
- 47:31It is. And it seems to come across that
- 47:33way, and it's also just individuals is taking
- 47:35responsibility and just bringing people together as well.
- 47:37It's not reliant on, Pauline, for example, I yourself Peter in
- 47:41that way to, you know, try and cajole, people, everybody seems
- 47:44to be posting about all I've done this ride or I've got this
- 47:47issue with my bike. Anybody help?
- 47:49It's very much a social Community as well.
- 47:50Absolutely. Yeah, it's a real, the whole
- 47:52emphasis the club is is sociable, you know, having some
- 47:55company for writing Berlin, just sharing that interest and love
- 47:59of riding a bike. But sadly comes through in your
- 48:02enthusiasm for you. So.
- 48:04So if it is anger, The Sound of Silence slightly silly question.
- 48:08But obviously, you explain the structure of the organization
- 48:10that is. So could potentially somebody
- 48:12join and volunteer, not actually write and help out in other ways
- 48:15with the club if they need it wanted a always an opportunity
- 48:17to that, in that sense. I guess they could.
- 48:20I don't think anyone has yet. I guess we've got a few sort of
- 48:26people turn up her to some of the social occasions who
- 48:28practice Partners, right? Yeah.
- 48:31I mean the could do, but yeah, I'm not.
- 48:33It tends to be people that have got involved and then a few of
- 48:37them will get their confidence up and, you know, volunteer to
- 48:42lead riots whatever will get will give a lot of help to start
- 48:46with until the Gap. The confidence up, you know.
- 48:48Yeah, sounds good. And in terms of sort of future
- 48:52of the club, any kind of plans ideas, what you want to do, sort
- 48:55of ongoing and grow the club or change anything.
- 48:58Yeah, we're always trying to grow.
- 49:00So we have a sort of, you know, people come and people go in
- 49:03terms of membership that it's always good to have a good.
- 49:07And if we have, you know, a big surgery members of be good to,
- 49:09we could offer more rides at weekend.
- 49:10We could offer a shorter riding along the ride, things like
- 49:12that. So, there's always ideas that we
- 49:14could do that. Yeah, but I think we've got
- 49:18quite Successful formula referring to writes a week.
- 49:21So, the typically around 40 to 50 miles.
- 49:24That seems to be really popular with, with our members.
- 49:27It's not, it's not too hard and also if you go out nine o'clock
- 49:31on a Saturday, you'll be back home by 2.
- 49:33So you haven't lost the whole day, it's important to people
- 49:36people working or in a week, so they need that time.
- 49:39Yeah. Because some people, I mean,
- 49:41some people that we've got a few couples but mostly it's sort of
- 49:43one member of a couple that rides.
- 49:45And the other partner is at home doing Nelson wants their husband
- 49:49or wife that, yes, it young children, perhaps, as well.
- 49:52Yes, people are balancing their busy lives with all these other
- 49:56things. Yeah, certain future plans.
- 49:58I think our ride leader, David. I think he's thinking about
- 50:02planning, another. I mentioned the trip to Ken.
- 50:03I think is to think about planning a trip to Norfolk
- 50:06probably later in the year possible.
- 50:08It's not, there's not firmed up yet and we offer a century ride
- 50:13every year in September that's 100, Miler.
- 50:15So that's that's for sure. And get the sort of newer
- 50:17members to Yeah, it's quite a big thing to do.
- 50:21Your first hundred miles done before so we get them to train
- 50:24up. And so we offer that every year
- 50:27we doing that, I think as an example where if you've been on
- 50:30last year's hundred minor for example circular route such.
- 50:34I'm struggling to think we're a long time ago.
- 50:39Now I've certainly seen rides such clubs from within out to
- 50:43Beaver. Okay, that's all.
- 50:45Yeah. Fox 10 lakhs.
- 50:55Yes. Yeah.
- 50:56So places like that. Yeah.
- 50:58Yeah right time is called us up. It's been fascinating chatting
- 51:02to you both. Thank you Peter.
- 51:03Thank you. Pauline.
- 51:03Thanks for coming in and chatting to us since the
- 51:06wonderful thing the club is doing.
- 51:07So yeah. So thanks very much and
- 51:10continued success with what you do.
- 51:13Thank you very much. Good to have you back, sir.
- 51:15Cheers to come. Thank you.
- 51:16Next week, we've got, we've got Bob Topping on from Peterborough
- 51:20United women. And we'll be talking about the
- 51:23developments of the club there and also his foundation The
- 51:27Becoming Foundation, right? So many great look for watching,
- 51:29definitely right. So we're finished, we'll be back
- 51:32same time. Same place.
- 51:33As now, I just mentioned 627, be listened to PCR Sports from
- 51:36Peter of em, have a great weekend.
- 51:38What are we doing? Sporting wise?
- 51:39And maybe if you fancy cycling, get in touch with the guys at
- 51:42the cycling touring Club, CTC Peterborough, and they'll help
- 51:45you out. So, other than that, have a
- 51:46great weekend and we'll see you next week.
- 51:48Take care. Care.
- 51:48Bye. Bye.
