- 0:03Speaker 1: If you want to start to feel happy, it starts
- 0:05Speaker 1: with you wanting to feel happy.
- 0:10Speaker 2: We like to sit and dwell. We like to sit
- 0:12Speaker 2: in our own sadness.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Make sure you're spending time every single day, whether it's 15,
- 0:19Speaker 1: 20 minutes, whether it's an hour, two hours, take time
- 0:22Speaker 1: to allow your mind separation from the stresses of your day.
- 0:26Speaker 1: If you expect to fail, you will fail. On the
- 0:29Speaker 1: other hand, if you expect to win, you will win.
- 0:32Speaker 1: And he's right because doctors and psychologists both alike, they
- 0:34Speaker 1: agree that worrying actually does shorten your life and it
- 0:38Speaker 1: does damage your body.
- 0:39Speaker 2: We need to clear our thinking before we go to sleep.
- 0:42Speaker 1: We're talking about a book that Norman Vincent Peale wrote,
- 0:46Speaker 1: The Power of Positive Thinking.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Let's kick this off with golden nugget number one.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Creating your own inner happiness that you are responsible for
- 1:03Speaker 1: your own happiness because unhappiness is usually the byproduct of
- 1:07Speaker 1: you thinking sad thoughts you having these negative feelings you
- 1:11Speaker 1: having resentment towards others and just having an overall crappy
- 1:15Speaker 1: outlook on life so if you think those things what
- 1:19Speaker 1: do you think is going to happen you have to
- 1:21Speaker 1: force yourself to not think those negative thoughts and Peele
- 1:27Speaker 1: says we have to get into the happiness habit by
- 1:30Speaker 1: thinking upbeat, cheery thoughts throughout the day. We like to
- 1:34Speaker 1: sit and dwell. We like to sit in our own sadness.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I don't like to do that, but I just know
- 1:40Speaker 1: that sometimes my brain forces me to do that. And
- 1:42Speaker 1: I don't know why. So I have to force myself
- 1:44Speaker 1: to not do that. I have to put on upbeat music.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I have to go do something productive. I have to
- 1:49Speaker 1: get in the gym. I have to go hang around.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Friends are going to make me laugh.
- 1:51Speaker 2: And it's tough.
- 1:52Speaker 1: At first, it doesn't feel right. It feels like you're
- 1:54Speaker 1: forcing it because you are forcing it. But eventually it
- 1:57Speaker 1: starts to make you feel better. There are miracles happening
- 2:01Speaker 1: all around you. There is beauty all around you. Open
- 2:04Speaker 1: your eyes and look. Can you see the sun shining?
- 2:07Speaker 2: Great. Can you hear the birds chirping? Great. Can you
- 2:11Speaker 2: feel the warmth of the sun on your skin? Awesome.
- 2:16Speaker 2: There's simple beauties all around us.
- 2:19Speaker 1: If you want to start to feel happy, it starts
- 2:21Speaker 1: with you wanting to feel happy.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So short circuit those negative thoughts.
- 2:26Speaker 1: And when you start to feel bad, when you start
- 2:28Speaker 1: to find yourself gossiping, feeling guilty, feeling angry, feeling whatever
- 2:32Speaker 1: it is you're feeling that's negative, turn that around. Force
- 2:36Speaker 1: yourself to think positively, do positive things. And while it
- 2:38Speaker 1: doesn't feel right at first, keep going.
- 2:42Speaker 2: You're on the right path.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Golden nugget number two, the antidote to anxiety. is that
- 2:50Speaker 1: people waste a lot of their time a lot of
- 2:52Speaker 1: their energy fuming and fretting about things that they cannot
- 2:55Speaker 1: control go back to covey's principle circle of concern circle
- 2:58Speaker 1: of influence focus only on those things in the circle
- 3:01Speaker 1: of influence everything else in the circle of concern you
- 3:04Speaker 1: can't control you can't affect that so move on don't
- 3:09Speaker 1: allow your mind to just spend time in that space
- 3:12Speaker 1: you're wasting your mind's energy So as part of this
- 3:17Speaker 1: antidote to anxiety, Peale says that we need to slow
- 3:20Speaker 1: down to relieve our anxiety and to attain peace.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And he suggests meditation.
- 3:27Speaker 1: He suggests that we devote at least 15 minutes daily
- 3:29Speaker 1: to calming and relaxing ourselves by thinking peaceful thoughts or
- 3:33Speaker 1: not thinking anything at all. So something he shares in
- 3:36Speaker 1: the book is to help get rid of the tendency
- 3:38Speaker 1: to worry and get angry. We to relax and spend
- 3:41Speaker 1: a few minutes thinking about beautiful, peaceful settings, hearing the
- 3:45Speaker 1: birds chirping, feeling the sun on our face, all these
- 3:47Speaker 1: things that I was talking about before, where it's just
- 3:49Speaker 1: a matter of you actually thinking that in your mind,
- 3:52Speaker 1: wherever you are, if you're at work, if you're in
- 3:55Speaker 1: your house, it doesn't or close your eyes and open
- 3:59Speaker 1: your mind to maybe a place where you're on vacation before.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And go there for 15 minutes. Smell the smells. Feel
- 4:06Speaker 1: what the sand feels like on your feet. Feel yourself
- 4:08Speaker 1: plunging into the ocean. So the antidote to anxiety, it's
- 4:13Speaker 1: all about clearing your mind. However you choose to do that,
- 4:17Speaker 1: make sure you're spending time every single day. Whether it's 15,
- 4:21Speaker 1: 20 minutes, whether it's an hour, two hours, if you're
- 4:23Speaker 1: working out at the gym, whether you're doing yoga, whether
- 4:25Speaker 1: you're going to cycling class, whatever. Take time to allow
- 4:29Speaker 1: your mind separation from the stresses of your day. Golden
- 4:34Speaker 1: nugget number three, expect the best. If you expect to fail,
- 4:39Speaker 1: you will fail. On the other hand, if you expect
- 4:41Speaker 1: to win, you will win. So what seeds are you
- 4:46Speaker 1: planting in your mind? Are you planting seeds of positivity
- 4:49Speaker 1: or seeds of negativity?
- 4:51Speaker 2: Guess what?
- 4:52Speaker 1: Your life is going to give you back more of that.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Are you planting seeds of, oh, doubt and, oh, I'm
- 4:58Speaker 1: not going to make this work or something bad is
- 5:01Speaker 1: going to happen. If you're planting seeds of that, guess
- 5:03Speaker 1: what you're going to get?
- 5:04Speaker 2: More of that. Start focusing on the positive. Start focusing
- 5:10Speaker 2: on how things can go right. And guess what?
- 5:12Speaker 1: When things go wrong, say, hmm, there's a lesson in
- 5:14Speaker 1: that for me. Because life doesn't happen to me, it
- 5:17Speaker 1: happens for me. So everything that's happening is there to
- 5:20Speaker 1: teach me a lesson. This isn't a setback, it's a
- 5:23Speaker 1: set up. This thing that's really bad, it happened for
- 5:26Speaker 1: a reason. I'm going to learn from it and I'm
- 5:27Speaker 1: going to get better. Golden nugget number four, worry not.
- 5:34Speaker 1: And he's right because doctors and psychologists both alike, they
- 5:36Speaker 1: agree that worrying actually does shorten your life and it
- 5:40Speaker 1: does damage your body. We need to clear our thinking
- 5:43Speaker 1: before we go to sleep. And we need to imagine
- 5:45Speaker 1: our worries flowing out of our body like water out
- 5:48Speaker 1: of a glass.
- 5:50Speaker 2: So don't think that my path is the right path.
- 5:51Speaker 1: No, no, no.
- 5:53Speaker 2: This path is good for me.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I replaced worry with hope by putting together goals. I
- 6:01Speaker 1: put together three goals, a financial related goal, a health
- 6:03Speaker 1: related goal, and a professional related goal. Something that what
- 6:07Speaker 1: I was going to do with my life. And back
- 6:10Speaker 1: in the day when I was going through those stresses,
- 6:12Speaker 1: I was worrying a lot, a lot. I was having
- 6:13Speaker 1: a tough time sleeping. I was having chest pains. My
- 6:16Speaker 1: heart was palpitating all the time. And I really just
- 6:19Speaker 1: could not get, you know, a high level of satisfaction
- 6:22Speaker 1: in life. And, you know, if you were sitting on
- 6:24Speaker 1: a scale of one to eight, Ryan, again, nines and
- 6:25Speaker 1: tens are reserved for very special times in our lives
- 6:28Speaker 1: that seldom happen. I was sitting at a four consistently.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Where I would wake up and I'd all of a
- 6:34Speaker 1: sudden feel the stresses of the day. I would pass
- 6:36Speaker 1: between three and four all the time. So what I
- 6:38Speaker 1: did was to replace that worry, that anxiety, that fear.
- 6:42Speaker 1: I built myself a plan that gave me hope. Goals
- 6:45Speaker 1: that gave me hope. Something that got me excited. Something
- 6:48Speaker 1: that I wanted to work towards. Something I wanted to
- 6:50Speaker 1: achieve because I knew that if I did, it would
- 6:52Speaker 1: get me out of this mess and my life would
- 6:53Speaker 1: be better as a result. Golden nugget number five, problem solving.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I had problems that I needed solutions to. I had desires.
- 7:05Speaker 1: I had wants. I had dreams. I had goals that
- 7:08Speaker 1: I needed a solution to. Look at the crap show
- 7:11Speaker 1: was a solution. Create your eight was a solution. But
- 7:16Speaker 1: what I did need to do was take myself out
- 7:18Speaker 1: of the busyness of the day and allow my mind
- 7:21Speaker 1: to sort of free up and look for inspiration all
- 7:24Speaker 1: around me and know that whatever solution I'm looking for,
- 7:28Speaker 1: it's going to come to me. And this is where
- 7:31Speaker 1: in this golden nugget in the book where Peele talks about,
- 7:35Speaker 1: you know, problem solving, he gives us 10 problem solving techniques,
- 7:38Speaker 1: which many of them I believe with. The first one,
- 7:41Speaker 1: believe that for every problem, there is a solution. So yes,
- 7:44Speaker 1: believe that your problem can be solved.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Yes, it's hard. Yes, it's difficult.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yes, you don't have a solution right now, but there
- 7:49Speaker 1: is a solution. And oftentimes there's more than one. Two,
- 7:53Speaker 1: try to maintain your serenity as you address a problem.
- 7:56Speaker 1: So don't feel anxious. Don't try to, don't try to,
- 8:00Speaker 1: to get angry and say, ah, you know, I'm not
- 8:01Speaker 1: getting this.
- 8:02Speaker 2: I don't understand. No, you need to be calm.
- 8:04Speaker 1: You need to be hopeful that there's going to be
- 8:07Speaker 1: a solution to this problem. Number three, don't try to
- 8:11Speaker 1: force an answer. Don't try to say like, oh my God,
- 8:13Speaker 1: I need an answer by Saturday at noon. If I
- 8:16Speaker 1: don't get it by Saturday at noon, then it's too late.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Sometimes you can't force it. Life often happens for you.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And so you just need time for that to reveal
- 8:25Speaker 1: itself to you. Number four, gather all relevant information.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Pretty simple.
- 8:30Speaker 1: Do as much research as possible. Number five, write down
- 8:33Speaker 1: all facts about the situation. Again, get understanding for the problem,
- 8:37Speaker 1: what's going on. You need to get clarity on the
- 8:38Speaker 1: problem so you can get clear on what solutions you
- 8:40Speaker 1: need to solve it. Number six, spend time praying about
- 8:44Speaker 1: the issue you are confronting. Listen, if you're praying about it,
- 8:47Speaker 1: that's fine. If you're not praying about it, maybe you're
- 8:49Speaker 1: thinking about it. Always make time to think about it.
- 8:52Speaker 1: When you're walking in nature, yes, take time to think
- 8:54Speaker 1: in nature and allow your mind to flow. But when
- 8:57Speaker 1: you separate yourself from the stresses, the anxieties, the busyness
- 9:00Speaker 1: of the day, allow your time to think about solutions.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Number seven, believe in and seek God's guidance on the
- 9:06Speaker 1: promise of the 73rd Psalm. Thou wilt guide me by
- 9:10Speaker 1: thy counsel. Again, if you believe in the religious aspect
- 9:14Speaker 1: of that, that will talk to you. That necessarily doesn't
- 9:17Speaker 1: talk to me. So I maybe won't be using that one.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Number eight, rely on your inner gifts of insight and intuition.
- 9:25Speaker 1: There's things that we believe we should do. And then
- 9:28Speaker 1: there's things that we know we should be doing. So
- 9:33Speaker 1: you got to listen to yourself and it takes time.
- 9:34Speaker 1: It takes, it does take time. It takes patience. It
- 9:37Speaker 1: takes some maturity for you to realize what you're great at.
- 9:39Speaker 1: And sometimes you're doing something just to make a living
- 9:42Speaker 1: just because it's my job.
- 9:43Speaker 2: It's my career.
- 9:43Speaker 1: It's what I believe I'm great at, but you have
- 9:47Speaker 1: other gifts within you that maybe you're not exploring yet
- 9:50Speaker 1: that you should be. Number nine, attend religious services where
- 9:54Speaker 1: you can and listen peacefully and let your subconscious work
- 9:57Speaker 1: on the problem. Again, you can go to church and,
- 10:00Speaker 1: or you can just go for walks i love going
- 10:02Speaker 1: for walks period i'll put music on my ears and
- 10:04Speaker 1: allow myself to think pretty simple number 10 the answer
- 10:07Speaker 1: that develops in your mind or comes to pass is
- 10:10Speaker 1: the right answer so i just allowed the thoughts that
- 10:13Speaker 1: came in my mind whenever i had a thought an
- 10:14Speaker 1: inspired thought i wrote it down on my phone pulled
- 10:16Speaker 1: up my phone opened up the notepad and just wrote
- 10:18Speaker 1: it down At the end of the day, I would
- 10:20Speaker 1: think about it, ponder on it, say, you know what?
- 10:21Speaker 1: This idea is something I want to go further into
- 10:24Speaker 1: and dig deeper into that. That's exactly how this show happened.
- 10:27Speaker 1: That's exactly how Creature Aid happened. It's exactly how you're
- 10:29Speaker 1: going to find solutions to your problems. Last but not least,
- 10:34Speaker 1: golden nugget number six, how to handle heartache. Now, everybody
- 10:38Speaker 1: at some point in their life experiences heartache and it's tough.
- 10:44Speaker 1: And so Peel says that for us to get over
- 10:46Speaker 1: heartache is We need to resist the heartache by staying busy.
- 10:52Speaker 1: So if you're getting a divorce from your husband or
- 10:53Speaker 1: your wife, if you just broke up with your girlfriend
- 10:55Speaker 1: or your boyfriend, if you just lost a loved one,
- 10:59Speaker 1: if a loved one passed away, a friend, a family member,
- 11:03Speaker 1: doesn't matter who it is. He says that in order
- 11:07Speaker 1: for you to get through it, you need to stay busy.
- 11:08Speaker 1: You need to return to your normal activities as soon
- 11:11Speaker 1: as possible after a loss or defeat. And you need
- 11:14Speaker 1: to resist the temptation to brood and feel sorry for yourself.
- 11:20Speaker 1: I got to get back to work. I got to
- 11:22Speaker 1: get back to my goals. Get back in the gym.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Get back to eating right. Get back to hanging out
- 11:27Speaker 1: with my friends, my family. Listen to the music that
- 11:29Speaker 1: I was listening to. We have to return to life.
- 11:35Speaker 1: But sometimes we just have to be sad and we have.
- 11:37Speaker 2: To work our way through it.
- 11:39Speaker 1: But the key here is to not allow your mind
- 11:42Speaker 1: to dwell on it for too long. That's not handling heartache.
- 11:46Speaker 1: That's allowing heartache to take control of you.
- 11:50Speaker 2: And to win.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Thank you.
