- 0:01DVD isn't just better than a VCR, it's amazingly better.
- 0:05Here's a scene from a movie on VHS cassette.
- 0:08Now here's the same scene. On DVD, everybody.
- 0:11My HD's depend. It's the coolest.
- 0:13Landing smack dab in the middle of the 90s ninety 5 would be
- 0:17about as 90s as you could get a comeback of His Airness.
- 0:21America would be attacked from within and Microsoft would show
- 0:24some flex. So hold on, we know how much you
- 0:27love these timeline videos. We're going to talk about the
- 0:32news, culture, sports and entertainment and all that was
- 0:35weird in the 90s. This is timeline.
- 0:59But outside, only here love remained the drug that behind on
- 1:07the pill. But did you know when it snows,
- 1:12my eyes become large, and the light that you.
- 1:18Shine can be seen, baby. I can tell you to a kiss from
- 1:25the Rose on. The.
- 1:27Grave oh, the more I get from you the stranger it feels yeah,
- 1:36now that your roses have groomed in the light, it's the.
- 1:46Gloom. On the rain.
- 2:02That was a kiss from the Rose on the Gray, one of those tunes
- 2:09that made 1995 what it is. Good evening, members.
- 2:15Good evening members, night owls.
- 2:18It is me, your MTVVJ for the night.
- 2:21Dean Ryan filling in for Carson Daly, who is leave of absence.
- 2:27Yes, he is on maternity leave. This is an incredible night as
- 2:31this is 1995, a musical odyssey where we're going to go back in
- 2:35time. Because it is just dawned on me
- 2:38just a couple of weeks ago that albums are turning 30 years of
- 2:44age. And we're not talking just any
- 2:46albums, the musical soundtracks that made our lives.
- 2:52And we're talking about a musical explosion really that
- 2:57defined a lot of my life and many others.
- 2:59But we haven't seen such a a variety of incredible talented
- 3:06musical acts and artists and definitely seals one of them.
- 3:09So we're going to be going back in time here tonight with a
- 3:12little escapism and as we have before with our members only.
- 3:17And joining me for this excursion is one of the other
- 3:21Real Deal Media guys, a man who has really evolved his musical
- 3:28palette and taste buns over the years and is here to showcase
- 3:33and share his most intimate thoughts on music, on culture,
- 3:37on what we've been through during that time and what he was
- 3:41going through. Well, you know him, the one, the
- 3:44only, Matthew. Matt Millen.
- 3:46Matt Millen, welcome to the stage here tonight.
- 3:48What a year. Here we find ourselves again in
- 3:501995. Matt.
- 3:52A great rendition of a really difficult song to sing, man.
- 3:55So we'll play. Well played man.
- 3:59Believe me, I it was frustrating that I, I, I have a lot of
- 4:05respect for Seal that we took for granted back then, which is
- 4:09kind of the under undertone theme here tonight.
- 4:12You'll notice a lot of artists we took for grand back then and
- 4:15we're just like, wow, ain't that the case, man.
- 4:19Absolutely, man. I mean, I really taking it for
- 4:23granted, you know, being in high school and college and when the
- 4:27grunt scene grunt scene took off and you know, that was
- 4:31dominating the airwaves for a few years.
- 4:33And as I mentioned in our our Oasis thing, damn, I just, you
- 4:41know, talk about being spoiled and entitled, man.
- 4:44When I, when I was complaining about Pearl Jam, you know, when,
- 4:49when just a when just a couple years ago, the onslaught of
- 4:52Slaughter Winger, Poison Warrant, Brittany Fox, Crocus,
- 4:59all these hair metal bands that were just absolutely dreadful.
- 5:03And here I was complaining a really good band in Pearl Jam,
- 5:08so. Yeah, if if that's our biggest
- 5:12problem in the world, then I think we're doing good.
- 5:14But you know, we're going to get into the the albums that are
- 5:19turning 30 this year, which which is I, I can't believe it.
- 5:23I it's just like yesterday. This some of this music seems so
- 5:27relevant and new to me like. Yeah.
- 5:29Did we RIP that off, Winkle? It did.
- 5:30We take a walk in the woods and then wake up 30 years later.
- 5:33If I I'm telling you, yeah, Maddie said.
- 5:38Here we go. 1995 seems like such a very long time ago.
- 5:42You're telling me? Yeah.
- 5:45It does, and then, like, it doesn't.
- 5:47What do you think about it? Yeah, but but what I was saying
- 5:52is that, like Kiss from the Rose, it's a timeless classic.
- 5:57You know, it it sounded new back then.
- 6:00It sounded new. It just, it never ages.
- 6:02And I think that's another thing with some of these, the albums
- 6:06and songs and tunes and people, these songs never really aged.
- 6:11It's just sounds so vibrant as it did yesterday.
- 6:16Last. 30 years ago it is it is. So I'm just getting my head
- 6:22around it. But let's talk about this now,
- 6:24because just to set the scene here, 1994, the year prior was
- 6:32probably the the end of grunge. You saw the murder of Kurt
- 6:37Cobain. And, and I totally forgot this
- 6:41too. Matt, I, I never brought this up
- 6:43to you. I forgot after Kurt died, the
- 6:47bass player for the, the, the band hole died the bassist.
- 6:52I totally forgot about that. And there was copycats.
- 6:55Years, a lot of Shannon Hoon, Blind Melon died in 95.
- 7:03A Newell of Sublime died in 95 before he got to see his band
- 7:07get big. And so, you know, 94 to 93 to 96
- 7:14was a really transitional time in the sense of losing a lot of
- 7:19these really, really attention we can't.
- 7:23Forget Jerry Garcia, that was a big death in 90.
- 7:26Five. Garcia died in 95 as well.
- 7:28I mean. Yeah.
- 7:30So yeah, and you're right, it was kind of a, it was a
- 7:33transitional period where the grunge era was, you know, on the
- 7:38wane or kind of not directionless.
- 7:42It's not the right turn on. Because there was.
- 7:44Still grunge albums that came out.
- 7:47Well, I, I, I'll say this and eerily similar to 1964, you
- 7:54know, after the Kennedy death, you had it just a new scene at
- 7:57the arrival of The Beatles. Similar here you have the birth
- 8:01of Britpop coming to America around this, this time 9495.
- 8:05But you had a real introduction to, I want to say a
- 8:09reintroduction of the acoustic guitar because you had a lot of
- 8:14grunge. You had a lot of that, but the
- 8:16alternative was bringing a kind of a, a very melodic sound to
- 8:20the mid 90s. You had Hootie the Blowfish,
- 8:23which you know, I at the time, you know, they're, they're,
- 8:27they're fun. It's a fun thing, you know, and,
- 8:29but, but you had the, the wonderwalls, you had, you had
- 8:33the, the birth of the female rock vocalist Jewel and a lot of
- 8:39those acoustic styling, Sheryl Crow Blue Traveller with the
- 8:44harmonica and the acoustics. So it, it, it was a, a very in
- 8:50it, it just was a change of lane.
- 8:51And I think it was much needed in in the wake of the the death
- 8:55of Kurt Cobain and the. Grunge itself too, wasn't really
- 8:59a genre. I mean, you look at, I mean, it
- 9:02was really the Seattle scene, but there was a lot of different
- 9:05types of music coming from it. I mean, like sound art.
- 9:08Alice and Chains were totally different than Pearl Jam.
- 9:11It was totally different to than than Nirvana so.
- 9:18It's it, it gave the birth to the the term post grunge
- 9:22movement. OK, so that's just to give you
- 9:25the setting of that. And then if you recall the last,
- 9:29the last radio podcast we did with What's Story, Morning
- 9:32Glory, you see Matt Millen now, he's finds himself in England in
- 9:36college, I think for the first time.
- 9:38Yeah, I, I was in Scotland. I, I moved to Scotland and
- 9:43actually it was around this time that one of my buddies who was
- 9:47also an exchange student from, he was from Berkeley.
- 9:49He introduced me to a band that was kind of the forefront of
- 9:55desert rock from Palm Springs, CA Caius.
- 10:00And they had become one of the most important bands.
- 10:03And you know, they would become with Josh Holm, Queens of the
- 10:06Stone Age, basically. That's right.
- 10:08Yeah, that's right. And they had their last album
- 10:11came out in 1995 S. It it, it is a sensational year.
- 10:18Also, that's the first year that I had cable television.
- 10:21I mean, that's a big deal back then.
- 10:23I mean, now it's people don't even know what you're talking
- 10:26about. But it was a big deal first time
- 10:27I had MTV and man, I got to tell you, up until that point, I was
- 10:32a pure innocent kid. Then I had MTV and I saw the
- 10:37Madonna video where it was, I think it was called Human
- 10:41Nature, and she was in a leather dominatrix outfit and I'll never
- 10:45forget that as long as. Yeah, that was.
- 10:48My God. That was also around the time
- 10:51where MTV was playing less and less videos as well, so.
- 10:56Well, it began something and the.
- 10:59World started in 9495. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:04You know, I never did I ever tell I was this close to making
- 11:07the audition tapes to be on the real world or Rd. rolls one of
- 11:10the other. I was.
- 11:13We were so into it. I mean, I thought I would have
- 11:15fared well on there. I think.
- 11:17I hope so. That is something.
- 11:21And he says it seems like such a stretch.
- 11:22Which part? Which part is the stretch?
- 11:24There's a lot of stretching going on.
- 11:26Thank you. Oh.
- 11:27Oh, she's so Grateful Dead. See, here's The funny thing,
- 11:31Jerry Garcia, because I was so young, I never, I didn't even
- 11:36know who he was or that band was till he died.
- 11:38And then later he became the Ice Cream.
- 11:41So therefore they almost got bigger when he died, sadly.
- 11:45So I had no idea. Actually I know they they didn't
- 11:49put out many studio albums, but American Beauty and and Working
- 11:52Man's Dead are great albums. Yes, yes, good album.
- 11:56We have Lena Star Moon that's saying love Pearl Jam and chili
- 11:59pee back then the chili pee. Chili Peppers.
- 12:05That's right. Chili Peppers.
- 12:06Yeah. Well, they have the, that was
- 12:08the album with Dave Navarro. That was the one off album they
- 12:13did with. It was the song was roller
- 12:15coaster. Was it?
- 12:17Yeah, Roller coaster with, with, with the Funkadelic Parliament
- 12:21behind them as well. George Clinton, I think,
- 12:23produced. Yeah, they they were in the bees
- 12:26and Butt head movie, a couple of their songs.
- 12:28That's. Right.
- 12:29I forgot about that movie. OK, OK.
- 12:32So I think. That was 97 so Oh my God.
- 12:35This is so long ago. I, I I Yes.
- 12:38Pure and innocent. Pure and innocent.
- 12:41Maddie, please. Now Pearl Jam, and to be fair,
- 12:45Pearl Jam was my secret. Like then, I would never admit
- 12:49it, but I actually liked them. I mean, come on, it was Pearl
- 12:52Jam, so. OK, so I'm going to list off 10
- 12:58albums now. This is according to this is
- 13:02according to like the Grammy Academy and a lot of these
- 13:06different genres you may or may not like, but it it doesn't
- 13:10matter because it's what defined the pinnacle of the mid 90s.
- 13:13Like we are defining the mid. What are we in now?
- 13:17The 20's? The future where it's now been
- 13:21defined with this decade, is the.
- 13:22Roaring. 20's the the, the roaring, painful, dreadful,
- 13:28never ending, roaring 20s Yes. OK, so here it is here's some of
- 13:32them here and Matt, if you know anything about it, you just you
- 13:37give me a you give me a holler there, as the kids say OK, well
- 13:42here it is and feel free to comment and your own right out
- 13:45there. Well here it is top ten albums
- 13:48and there's also this is the top ten.
- 13:50Then we're going to go over 30 amazing albums.
- 13:53And then Matt and I, we're going to give you our a pinnacle album
- 13:58of 1995 plus an honorable mention.
- 14:01So you'll get that to our luxury.
- 14:03And we want to hear your your picks out there as well.
- 14:08Which is weird because I was only 5 years old when, when all
- 14:10these albums came out. I don't understand it.
- 14:12So anyways, this is it right here. 10 albums celebrating the
- 14:1530th anniversaries here in 2025. Now, hip hop was wasn't just
- 14:21growing as they say, it was becoming the voice of the
- 14:24generation. Certainly, certainly I think I
- 14:28remember Naughty By Nature was the first one I saw and I was in
- 14:32just totally entranced with TLC. But salt and pepper, yes, yeah,
- 14:37that really got me in honorable mention in Vogue.
- 14:40Well, here it is. They're saying it it gave the
- 14:43the the year 1995 and the music that came with it gave that
- 14:47decade a true expression empowerment from all artists
- 14:51from all genres, politics, certainly tackling love lost
- 14:55race, personal transformation before the transhumanist came or
- 15:00technologically it was also one of the great years, last great
- 15:03years of the CD era. That's true before Napster.
- 15:09When? Physical albums loudest.
- 15:12Well, yeah, it's yeah, Yeah, No, it'd be right before Napster,
- 15:15and I think right before those little tiny compact CDs.
- 15:19So they're saying that from debut masterpieces to comeback
- 15:23records to genre shifting soundtracks, 1995 produced
- 15:27albums that didn't just define the year, but define careers, in
- 15:30some cases, an entire era. Well, here's the first one here.
- 15:35TL CS Crazy, sexy, cool. What an album that was.
- 15:40From Waterfalls to Creep and R&B Standard.
- 15:43And Matt, you strike me as a TLC fan.
- 15:47That was the first. I've got it from you, a pretty
- 15:50horrifying story. 1 and my I'm glad my friend's not watching
- 15:53this, but. Go ahead, tell us.
- 15:56So oh God, this guy was the, he collected a lot of porn.
- 16:00Let's just say, I mean a lot. I mean, when we helped him move,
- 16:05his wife asked us like, there's one bag just full of porn and
- 16:09she's all this is all of this porn.
- 16:11We're all no, no, no, this is about it. 5% of it anyway.
- 16:17But honestly, I I think he just kind of exhausted himself out.
- 16:22So he needed to come up with rituals.
- 16:25I'm saying I can't believe that we always knew, like in his CD
- 16:29track when it was his wank session because he had TLC in
- 16:34there, he had Lita Ford and Paula Abdul, and so we knew
- 16:39something unbecoming was happening in Israel.
- 16:43So whenever I think about waterfalls, I think about
- 16:46waterfalls. Oh man.
- 16:48Well, well, that's the show, everybody.
- 16:50We hope you had a good night. Wow, sometimes.
- 16:56They ritual man. Well, poor, poor, poor left eye,
- 17:02if she was. Here I I won't.
- 17:03I won't say his name, but. Yes, it's the least you could
- 17:08do. OK, so that is.
- 17:12Yeah. OK.
- 17:12So there's some people here Mandy Lynn says hidden his stash
- 17:18and wife's CDs. Yeah.
- 17:19I don't know what that's all about.
- 17:21What we just heard there. OK, so that's the TLC story for
- 17:23you. I'll reserve mine for another
- 17:26TLC anniversary. Well, so there it is.
- 17:28Crazy, sexy, cool. It was everywhere.
- 17:30I mean, songs weren't just on the radio for a couple weeks.
- 17:34They were on the radio for years, all the time, all the
- 17:39time. I mean, if you missed it, you'll
- 17:41hear it again, you know, in a few minutes.
- 17:43So that's that one there. OK, another one.
- 17:47Now, this one, it didn't really move me.
- 17:49I'm not really a fan. I'm still not moved, but a lot
- 17:53of people were. Tupac Shakur's Me Against the
- 17:56World. You know, he may or people said
- 18:02he's not. He's not dead.
- 18:05They say he might be alive. But after what Candace Owens did
- 18:07recently with Tupac Shakur and showed the real Tupac, he might
- 18:11want to pretend he's dead for for a good long while, because
- 18:14that was real bad. But nonetheless, Tupac's most
- 18:18introspective album, Me Against the World balanced anger,
- 18:21vulnerability, and yes, political fire too, from a very
- 18:26limp wristed kind of perspective.
- 18:28For all those who know what I'm talking about, this next one
- 18:31here, it meant I'll just assume you're you're on the same
- 18:34wavelength with me of on Tupac. Unless I'm wrong.
- 18:37Well. I I mean, I do appreciate that
- 18:40he kind of had this California sound in his music and, you
- 18:44know, very much a Bay Area boy and he was in Digital
- 18:47Underground, man, I give him props for that.
- 18:50Yes, yes, OK, digital. Is that the guy that says?
- 18:53Rock Man. The guy that says I'm funky,
- 18:57they call me, I'm OK. OK.
- 18:59Digital Underground. Yes.
- 19:00OK, there we go. So all right, here's the next
- 19:02one here. This next one is now.
- 19:05This one's big, this one's huge, and it still sounds great.
- 19:10Alanis Morissette of Canada. I always forget she's Canadian.
- 19:13Jagged Little Pill. One of the most biggest
- 19:16breakthrough albums of the decade.
- 19:19And since an album filled with anger, pain, really Taylor
- 19:26Taylor Swift, Taylor Swift almost took a page out of
- 19:30Alanis's book. And cause Alanis was the one who
- 19:34started the the autobiographical kind of lyrical songs wasn't.
- 19:39There's just something so authentic about Alanis, you know
- 19:44that I. Oh yes, there is.
- 19:45Struggle matching although her her definition.
- 19:48Her definition of ironic is pretty shit, but other than that
- 19:51she's fantastic. So.
- 19:53How ironic that you said that, don't you think?
- 19:56I mean, it is ironic that there's a song called ironic and
- 19:59there's no irony in this song, so.
- 20:01It's like 10,000 spoons and all you need is a knife.
- 20:04You know, it's, it's like rain on it, OK.
- 20:07Yeah, rain on a wedding day is the shit that happens, you know?
- 20:10But I think that's the genius of it, and I think she actually
- 20:12purposely intended that so. Here, here's the OK, here's the
- 20:17weird thing is I my first biggest crush was this girl
- 20:23around that time who I wasn't going to prom with years later.
- 20:26But I swear to you she looked like Alanis Morissette and I
- 20:30found myself very attracted to Alanis.
- 20:34I think like second album when she begin, you know, maturing, I
- 20:38guess whatever. And so I I I've always liked
- 20:42Alanis Morissette. I've seen her live well.
- 20:45There's something so real about her, man.
- 20:47Yeah, I know. Plastic world.
- 20:49There's something really real and unique and she wasn't shying
- 20:52away from who she was. No.
- 20:56Really special human being. Yeah, I love Alanis.
- 20:59I love Alanis Morissette. Really talented man.
- 21:03She's so talented and she has nice, nice hair too, you know,
- 21:08like she's since remade the album of Jag Little Pill to
- 21:13acoustic stylings. If you ever get a chance to
- 21:16listen, it's really good. And we might do that here
- 21:19tonight for the break. I'll try to find something on
- 21:21that. OK.
- 21:22So yeah, kudos to, you know, did you ever hear the story when so
- 21:27she in Canada, she was like this pop star, you know, like Avril
- 21:32Lavigne would become. They were like, like their
- 21:35version of Mickey Mouse Club and things like that.
- 21:37So she came to Hollywood to record and produce, you know,
- 21:41produce the album. And I forgot who the producer
- 21:43was for that album, but he's a, I think it was vague something,
- 21:47but he's a very well known guy. Anyways, so she's walking on
- 21:50Sunset Blvd. and she gets mugged and that the the guy had a gun
- 21:55and he goes, he swipes her purse.
- 21:59She had two bags. He swipes her purse and the
- 22:03purse he took had all her money in it or whatever.
- 22:06The other bag had he taken that had all the lyrics to A Jagged
- 22:10Little Pill and the whole the whole album, she would have lost
- 22:14everything. And what what what a what a
- 22:18story that. Is the loss that would be for
- 22:19the rest of us too? Yes, it is just like your friend
- 22:23with those were were the tapes read that those tapes that you
- 22:26found OK, he. He he call him.
- 22:28His disguise was. They were called The X-Files.
- 22:33Can't believe it's ladies and gentlemen.
- 22:41This is so unprecedented here. OK, anyways, if you only knew
- 22:49about the red VHS story that I had in high school.
- 22:52Anyways, here's is the next one here before my sore throat gets
- 22:56worse. Yeah, a little sick today.
- 23:00Might have to end the show early.
- 23:01OK, so this is another one. OK, so I didn't really
- 23:04appreciate it. I'm not sure I appreciate it now
- 23:09or ever. I, I, I consider this next
- 23:12artist kind of what she did to the 90s is what Eddie Van Halen
- 23:18kind of did to the 80s. Not that it, there's anything
- 23:20wrong with Eddie, but he inspired everyone in the 80s to
- 23:23start tapping and next thing you know, everyone's a guitar
- 23:26virtual Oh, just going crazy. And, and, and this next one is
- 23:31Mariah Carey. I thought Mariah Carey's
- 23:33Daydream and everything she did just inspired every singer from
- 23:38from the blacks to the whites and everybody to just over sing
- 23:42on everything. I mean, Matt, you know what I'm
- 23:44talking about. I mean, how many times did you
- 23:46hear the star spangled, the Star Spangled Banner of Hoes?
- 23:50See you. Come on.
- 23:54You know what annoys me about it too?
- 23:55That the voice should serve. Tell me.
- 23:58The voice should serve the song, the song shouldn't serve the
- 24:00voice. And I think with these vocal
- 24:04wankers, you know, 'cause it is vocal masturbation, it just, it,
- 24:08it drives me. We're trying to get away from
- 24:11the. Yeah, I keep on going back to my
- 24:14my friends. So.
- 24:21Sorry about that. Anyways, yeah, that's Mariah
- 24:26Carey for you before I knock things over.
- 24:29So yeah, Daydream is 30 years old.
- 24:33Can you believe that he. Just always annoyed me to be
- 24:36honest so. Yeah, this was Mariah who was on
- 24:39fire and just, you know, I'll give her credit.
- 24:42She can hit the Alto note. I think that's the highest 1.
- 24:47You know, not everybody can do that.
- 24:49Anybody you know, I just can't stand Christmas albums either,
- 24:52man. Like anybody who does Christmas
- 24:55albums, it just irritates me so. Well, there goes.
- 25:00Christmas songs and you know, I like some of, but something
- 25:03about yeah, I don't know. Well, we can only go up from
- 25:08where we just came. So here.
- 25:10So that's Mariah Carey that for you.
- 25:12Now, this next one here is AII believe this guy.
- 25:15Just I believe he just passed. I could be wrong.
- 25:19Correct me if I am. And I'm I'm sorry if he hasn't.
- 25:22He's still alive. But it's D'angelo's brown sugar.
- 25:25You know, again, another genre that was kind of out of my
- 25:29league that was beyond me. It was for a different
- 25:32demographic of people. I would assume you as well,
- 25:35Matt. Yeah.
- 25:36Absolutely. Yeah, yes, Matt does.
- 25:40We weren't so urban back then with D'Angelo, but he made an
- 25:45impact on some. So moving on from that now, this
- 25:48one's a huge one. This one made a huge impact on
- 25:52my life. And I would willing to say Matt
- 25:55Millen's family as well, and that's Radiohead, The Benz.
- 25:59This is a definitive song, definitive song.
- 26:03The Benz 1995, what comes to mind because that's a huge.
- 26:09Street spirit that is one of the most haunting songs.
- 26:14Oh, how's it goes like this? Let me see if I can get that
- 26:17down here. Street spirit.
- 26:21I'll play some of these just just medleys if I can.
- 26:23I, I tried to do this last time. So this is right after their
- 26:30song Creep. And then they were doing songs
- 26:33like this just so you can hear the medley in your head.
- 26:36So you know what we're talking about.
- 26:38It's not Mandarin here. It is.
- 26:40This is street spirit. Yeah.
- 26:46OK. It was the closest thing to Pink
- 27:14Floyd since early Pink Floyd, man, I thought.
- 27:19I always thought I was considered.
- 27:22Absolutely. I think that's a great, great
- 27:25comparison, man. There is that because it was it
- 27:28was not only about the the tone and the the melodies, the
- 27:32atmosphere was dominant. It created this, and I mean, not
- 27:38so much with Pablo Honey, their first album, but with the Benz
- 27:41and OK Computer and then Kid a Inhale the Thief.
- 27:46Absolutely. It was just so dependent on this
- 27:50atmosphere. Yeah, so I mean very, very
- 27:56Spacey and psychedelic. Yeah, yeah.
- 28:01And, and they were considered part of the Brit pop as well.
- 28:05They've reunited just recently. A lot of the bands have been
- 28:09inspired by Oasis reunion and Radiohead, certainly one of
- 28:13them. And I, I love both bands.
- 28:16And there's certainly I think a healthy competition is great
- 28:19because, you know, at the end of the day, the consumer us, we get
- 28:22all this great music so we love it.
- 28:24So that's great. And I.
- 28:27Love it, stellar album. It was their first and I don't
- 28:30think Pablo Honey was that great, but but the bands really,
- 28:35they found their form and they they just exploded for the next
- 28:39several albums and just expanding.
- 28:41Now I, I have to ask you, if you had to pick, what would you
- 28:46pick? What, what is the better album?
- 28:48What, what resonated with you more?
- 28:50The Bends or OK Computer, Matt. That's a close one, but probably
- 28:54OK computer in the end. And why is that if you could?
- 28:59Oh. God, just like karma police,
- 29:04just I think overall, like every song on OK computer was, you
- 29:11know, a nine out of 10 at least, whereas the bends had a couple
- 29:15of lows, I think. But you know, the bend was still
- 29:19was kind of transitioning from they were kind of just more of a
- 29:21straight rock band with Pablo Honey and the bend still had a
- 29:25little of that, but it's still phenomenal.
- 29:28And it I mean both albums, it's I don't even like saying I, I
- 29:32like one more than the other, to be honest, I think.
- 29:34I know it's. That's kind of the golden era,
- 29:37Radiohead, you know what I mean? So like both albums and and Kid
- 29:41A and Hail to the Thief and. Yeah, before they went into
- 29:47outer space and they start playing these weird instruments,
- 29:50which was cool. I was all for.
- 29:51Yeah, I mean, I I love when fans tried, tried different shit.
- 29:55That's I would never begrudge Metallica for the Black Album,
- 29:58for instance. OK, so here's the next one here
- 30:03and I'm going to do my best. I can't play this one on guitar,
- 30:05but I'm I'm going to try to do this freestyle rapping style,
- 30:08OK? And let's see if Matt can guess
- 30:10what I'm doing. OK, bear with me.
- 30:14I haven't wrapped live like this since 1995.
- 30:18I think goes boom, boom, boom, she said.
- 30:25I'm on my Uncle John. I see you at the crossroads.
- 30:29So we don't feed and it's a lot of scat, right?
- 30:35Did am I saying that right, Scat.
- 30:36Yeah. Bone Thugs N Harmony.
- 30:38Come on. Oh yeah.
- 30:41Before I butchered it. No, I mean, I, I remember, I, I
- 30:46got, I got that album from remember the Columbia House
- 30:50days. Oh, Oh yeah, for a penny.
- 30:53One of the 10 ones, I'm like, I want to because I like, I think
- 30:57it was. Yeah, I really, I really dug
- 30:59that song. And I also got the far side.
- 31:02I got. I was.
- 31:04I got. Oh, I forgot about them.
- 31:05Like hip hop and R&B. And I really dug it too,
- 31:10actually. It's really good shit so.
- 31:12You know what I remember because of that band or that group, it
- 31:17brought back a lot of the afros. I started seeing the black guys
- 31:21wearing and then like Scottie Pippen had an Afro, you know, in
- 31:24basketball. It brought it brought that style
- 31:27back. And I thought it was kind of
- 31:28cool. And yeah, I never knew what the
- 31:31hell they were saying. And it was just like, it was
- 31:35like a different language, but it just, you know, it was what
- 31:39it was. I.
- 31:39Mean it was, it was the last like for me, really interesting
- 31:46time and it was toward the end of the of the great era of hip
- 31:49hop in my opinion. Yeah, so there you have that
- 31:54one. OK, this next one.
- 31:56I totally disagree with this one.
- 31:58Why would it even be considered top ten albums?
- 32:03You know, it's Waiting to Exhale from Whitney Houston.
- 32:07I mean, come on. I mean, Matt, save me.
- 32:12I I will say though, that one thing that annoys me about a lot
- 32:16of singers is they try to be Whitney Houston.
- 32:19When that job was taken, there was already a Whitney Houston.
- 32:22So I mean, she, she had a spectacular voice, but she, she
- 32:25never really did it for me, so. 2 songs, Whitney Houston.
- 32:31That just moved me. And yeah, I mean, how do I know
- 32:37if you really love me? I know, I know, I know.
- 32:43It's one of the first songs I remember growing up on the radio
- 32:46was that one and then whenever you know, for me, two.
- 32:53But that's it. So I disagree with waiting next.
- 32:57Hell, for some reason we had that CD in my house.
- 33:00I don't know why. I don't know why my grandpa got
- 33:03that one. I'm afraid to ask now after
- 33:04Matt's story, but I never liked it.
- 33:08OK, so there's that one. And finally, finally, and I'm
- 33:12going to let Matt go on this. It's Are you ready for this one?
- 33:17This is 1990 fives. 1990 fives. Where is it here?
- 33:241995 Melancholy in the Infinite Sadness album by The Smashing
- 33:29Pumpkins, a double album with that was ambitious, emotionally,
- 33:33sonically vast. The Smashing Pumpkins embrace
- 33:36orchestra, grunge, glam all at once, delivering a project that
- 33:39was chaotic but unforgettable in its scale and scope.
- 33:43Matt, take it away. I know you were.
- 33:44Forget heavy metal, don't forget.
- 33:47I mean, 00 is a classic heavy metal song, man.
- 33:51That that whole album is just how different the songs are.
- 33:56It's just, it's insane, but it's just so effing good, man.
- 34:01I mean 1979 Tonight tonight, 0 Bullet with Butterfly wings,
- 34:07like like the whole album. It's I think you know that.
- 34:12And what's the story? Morning Glory?
- 34:14I'd never say 1 is better than the other but they're just like
- 34:17every song is so strong. He goes, yeah, it was.
- 34:24And it was the first album that I even because I liked Siamese
- 34:28Dream, but it was one of those things that I I was annoyed by
- 34:32it because it was so popular. But when I first heard, when I
- 34:37first heard it was tonight, tonight I think.
- 34:41And I saw the video and it's still my favorite music video of
- 34:44all time. Everything about magic.
- 34:50Anyways, yeah, just so you know what the song sounds like and my
- 34:54guitar's attitude and it's freezing where I am and I'm not
- 34:59getting over a cold. I'm just starting one.
- 35:01I it's now gotten to my ANYWAYS, so great album again.
- 35:05For me personally, I didn't appreciate The Smashing Pumpkins
- 35:09in the mid 90s. I, I cause it was, I'll be
- 35:15honest, it was weird to me because, you know, from what I
- 35:19grew up on, nobody really saying like, you know, it was just
- 35:23like, I didn't know what, I didn't understand it.
- 35:25I was maybe too young. And then I equated it with there
- 35:30was a in, in 1995 specifically. I remember there was a
- 35:33rollerblade craze just going across the country.
- 35:37Yeah, like, and I still can't do it.
- 35:40But I remember my best friend at the time, Stevie, he started
- 35:44getting into like Smashing Pumpkins and all that and
- 35:47rollerblading and shit and like, like, like, man, what are you
- 35:50doing? Like let's go ride bikes and
- 35:53this and that. And then he he wanted to go in
- 35:54the alternative route with all this music.
- 35:56And so it it, it was a, it was kind of turned me off a lot of
- 35:59this stuff. I didn't understand it.
- 36:03But now I absolutely love it. I mean.
- 36:06As a, as a metal, you know, then I was in particular a metal guy,
- 36:11there were obviously going to be a lot of elements to melancholy
- 36:14that I would dig because there there are a lot of really heavy
- 36:18songs, like really heavy wear, you know, really sludgy guitar,
- 36:23which is, you know, classic Stoner rock and which I love.
- 36:28You know, the more distortion the better for me.
- 36:31So I'm a big electric wizard fan.
- 36:32I love absolute distortion. So, but then also just the, the
- 36:37really quiet elements of it and using a lot, using a lot of
- 36:42Toms. So it gives a real watery feel
- 36:45to the, to the, the tempo. It's just, and it's everything I
- 36:51love. That's that's why I was a huge
- 36:52fan of Thin Lizzy's because of Brian Downing's Toms.
- 36:56You know, he, he was heavy on the Toms and then melancholy and
- 36:59the infinite sadness is really heavy on Toms.
- 37:02And I, I just absolutely love that, the feeling that he gives.
- 37:05Well, also. Too, It was unheard of to have a
- 37:10double album in in the 90s. I mean, you haven't seen stuff
- 37:15like that since like the 70s, you know?
- 37:17Yeah, exactly. It was.
- 37:19It was a pretty shocking then, actually.
- 37:25Yeah, exactly. It just and you know.
- 37:28How prolific they were at that time that you know, they they
- 37:31couldn't pair it down to 10 songs unless they just.
- 37:37Oh, wow. OK, so here is this is a
- 37:41lightning round. This is according to a
- 37:45independent website of what they believe the Top 40 albums of
- 37:501995 are and which we'll we're going to have a look at before
- 37:53we go to break. And when we get back, we're
- 37:55going to go over the top songs of the the year and then we're
- 37:59going to give you our picks of top album and song of 1995.
- 38:05But here is with some of the independent music reviewers, AKR
- 38:09competition, what they're saying about it all.
- 38:13And you know, there's some merit to what what what they're
- 38:16suggesting here it is right here.
- 38:19Well, they start with Black Street.
- 38:21That's beyond me. Blessed Union of souls.
- 38:25Never heard of them in my life. Sheryl Crow.
- 38:30Well, you know, you know, do you have an opinion on a Sheryl
- 38:34Crow? Cause to me, Matt, it's just, I
- 38:37don't have an opinion. She's just.
- 38:39A commercial, yeah. I never, I never really.
- 38:43Her music never did much for me so.
- 38:45I I felt bad for her about the whole Lance Armstrong thing and
- 38:50how he just deceived her in the was it?
- 38:53Am I thinking of the right person?
- 38:55I think so. Yeah, yeah, I feel bad.
- 38:57Yeah, I feel bad for Shark Row. Just.
- 39:00She just kind of, she was in the background for me.
- 39:02Yeah, I don't know why. I don't know why I know this,
- 39:07but somehow I do. I know.
- 39:09I think it was maybe a year or two later she slept with Eric
- 39:12Clapton. I I just.
- 39:14That's all I know. OK, well maybe we should go to
- 39:19commercial now, but just a few more albums here.
- 39:24What a show, baby Brandy. No, not never did anything for
- 39:28me. OK, how about hoodie and the
- 39:30Blowfish? Hoodie and the Blowfish take.
- 39:32That I just saw. Take that.
- 39:34Oh, take that. How about how about take this?
- 39:36What do you think about them? They, I mean the Geneva
- 39:41Conventions were made for a reason and these bastards came
- 39:44out in the 90s so clearly war. Yes, but they're back for good.
- 39:52What a song that was and then the Real McCoy going to tell you
- 39:54a lot of club music too, that just of.
- 39:57Course they never. Never knew who they were.
- 40:00They're full of shit though. They're not back for good.
- 40:02Take that so. OK, Matt's still on Take that,
- 40:06or we'll try to avoid that album cover.
- 40:08What about Hootie and the Blowfish South Carolina band?
- 40:12They're the talk of the town, you know they're harmless.
- 40:16To me it looks like they were having a good time.
- 40:19A lot of sports to me, they're, they're more like, you know,
- 40:21Counting Crows. I never disliked them.
- 40:25I never really paid much attention to them.
- 40:27Yeah, Counting Crows. Interesting you said them.
- 40:32Yeah, interesting, you said. That I like the the Hootie and
- 40:35the Blowfish guy. He did a great version of Wagon
- 40:38Wheel. You know, it was a Bob Dylan.
- 40:41Darius, Darius Rucker. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 40:44It's a Bob Dylan song that was turned into a full song.
- 40:47It was an incomplete song. It was done by Old Crow Medicine
- 40:51Show. But he did a really, he did a
- 40:53really good version of it. Yes, he did.
- 40:57Yeah, He's, he's a great. He does country music.
- 40:59He's a great, great artist. So no doubt about it.
- 41:01Well, he's a fantastic artist. It's just Hootie and the
- 41:04Blowfish themselves. Yeah, they were not about.
- 41:07They were. Decent, but nothing I was really
- 41:09into SO. Yeah, they're, they're they're a
- 41:11college, you know, like a college band, you know, they
- 41:13gave around that time you saw Dave Matthews and, you know,
- 41:17these college groups, you know, no harm, no foul.
- 41:20And then Brandy, who I didn't pay attention to until I saw I
- 41:23still know what you did last summer.
- 41:25Wow. She was incredible in in that
- 41:28movie her. Brother, they had the sequel
- 41:33called I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, but it was the
- 41:36summer afterward, so they didn't really do the math very well,
- 41:40but. Well, they didn't correct their
- 41:43work, but but you know, the irony.
- 41:47Speaking of being ironic is Brandy's brother Ray J not only
- 41:53was in the the Kim Kardashian tape, but was one of the most
- 41:58very well known drug dealers in Hollywood who actually gave the
- 42:01lethal dose to Whitney Houston the night she died as he was
- 42:06also dating her too Apparently. So her Brandy's mother was a
- 42:12very high profile PR publicist in Hollywood, so you can imagine
- 42:17how she climbed the ranks. So a little little back story
- 42:21for you there, because my, my, my wisdom.
- 42:24Here's some other people. I just don't know who's
- 42:27Sukiyaki. Couldn't tell you hold my hand.
- 42:32Yeah. So here's some other Tootsie
- 42:34roll. I was in a coma or something.
- 42:37We must have missed Tootsie Roll 69 boys.
- 42:40Matt, I I swear to you, we must have missed that one.
- 42:43All for one I remember very distinctly it was the answer to
- 42:47boys, to men, or color me bad, one or the other.
- 42:50Yeah, yeah. Of Tulsa, OK.
- 42:56So yeah, I've seen, yeah, I've seen.
- 42:58They're behind the music. It's quite stunning.
- 43:01This one, I remember. OK, this was a huge song.
- 43:04OK, Desiree's, You got to be bold.
- 43:06You got to be. Bad you got to be to get.
- 43:09I mean, it was a big song because in 1995, I remember I
- 43:13was really into basketball, but I was in the college basketball
- 43:16and UCLA won the championship. It was a big deal.
- 43:21And I watched because I went to school with Ed Bannon and
- 43:25O'Brien or whatever their names were.
- 43:27But when they won, this was like the championship song.
- 43:31And that song got huge, You know?
- 43:34Kudos to her 90. Five.
- 43:36That was the year that Latrell Sprewell strangled the Warriors
- 43:41coach Carly Simo. That's right, that's right.
- 43:44He inspired a lot of strangulations that year.
- 43:48Yes. Lena said.
- 43:50Jennifer Love Hewitt. Oh, don't get me started on
- 43:52Jennifer Love. I absolutely adored her.
- 43:54Still. Still do.
- 43:56Truly glad you're both OK. I'm hanging in there.
- 43:59Barely. Yeah.
- 44:01Clive Davis with Whitney. Yes.
- 44:03Yes. Can't believe you missed Tootsie
- 44:07Roll song. I don't know.
- 44:08The Tootsie Roll song. Me.
- 44:09Neither. I don't know what.
- 44:11Am I missing? OK so Sophie B Hawkins was a
- 44:16very well known artist in the lesbian community.
- 44:19I didn't know this too much later.
- 44:21Her big song that brought her to prominence was Damn, I Want to
- 44:26Be Your Lover. Which is a song.
- 44:30I remember that song clearly. Now I didn't know that song
- 44:35'cause I was too young, but this song I remembered 'cause my
- 44:38friend again, my, my friend, we're live in each other's
- 44:41pockets. My friend Stevie's mother bought
- 44:44the CD for Sophie B Hawkins and it was every car ride was as I
- 44:49lay me down to. Great song.
- 44:54Great song, you know, harmless once again.
- 44:57It's no Tootsie Roll though. OK, here's another one.
- 45:01Here, look at this one. Do you know who she is?
- 45:05Well, there's more Hootie, but Dion Faris.
- 45:10This is interesting. Dion Faris was in the band.
- 45:16Oh, God, what was this? Tennessee.
- 45:19Take me to another place. Take me to another band.
- 45:23My boy at all that hurts. But who is that band called?
- 45:26Oh God. I.
- 45:29Know you're talking about Daniel Land?
- 45:31I'm cheating here. Tennessee.
- 45:33Tennessee. OK, they'll come to me.
- 45:38The rest of it, man you arrested the development man arrested the
- 45:41of course you. Got to know this.
- 45:43You got to know this. Who did?
- 45:45Tennessee. I don't want to have to look it
- 45:47up. It's Arrested Development Man.
- 45:50Yes, Thank you. Thank you.
- 45:52Oh. My God, I can't believe I
- 45:53forgot. That's embarrassing.
- 45:55Yeah. That is embarrassing.
- 45:59Now we must hear the Tootsie Roll song.
- 46:01OK, we'll we'll get there. OK, so so she was the singer in
- 46:07that band. She was like one of the vocalist
- 46:09and then she broke away from them and did this song called I
- 46:14know which goes I know what you're doing, baby.
- 46:19Oh, I know. There you.
- 46:21Go. And it became huge because it
- 46:24was featured on 9O2 and O exclusively.
- 46:28And at the Peach Pit After dark, to be exact.
- 46:33Knew she looked OK, yeah. And but her, that band in
- 46:37particular was responsible for that bring it back to Africa
- 46:40kind of swag, you know, the the the emblem of Africa continent,
- 46:46the colors. And then she broke away from
- 46:48that and had this hit song, which was her only hit.
- 46:52But I mean, it's good. I had it somewhere.
- 46:56I I'd play it if I've I've never played it before, but I think
- 46:59you know it. Got a really impressive CV man,
- 47:01I'll say that. Yeah, yeah, it was.
- 47:03It was good stuff. So there's that one now, Shaggy.
- 47:06Mr. Bombastic. Yeah, I remember Shaggy.
- 47:09Mr. Bombastic, we all know that one total eclipse of the heart
- 47:14that came back in the play. OK, there's that one biggie.
- 47:17Smalls, I got that. I actually have that on record.
- 47:21I got I have it on vinyl. Now here's a.
- 47:25They accidentally sent it to me because I wanted.
- 47:27I was oh. Columbia.
- 47:29Final No, no, this was just a couple years ago.
- 47:32But then I was like, I love one more chance, man.
- 47:34I'm keeping this one. I'm not having to return.
- 47:36I'm not returning it. It's a great, it's a great
- 47:39album. This is a good album.
- 47:41Now this is a great song. Yeah.
- 47:46Boys to Men, Water Runs Dry written by Babyface who wrote a
- 47:52lot of these R&B songs back in the day.
- 47:55I I see these guys as one of the last real proper R&B groups.
- 48:05We don't even talk anymore. We don't even know what we are
- 48:12about saying. I love you no more.
- 48:18No other thing is no longer. Some people work things out,
- 48:27some just don't know how to change.
- 48:31Let's don't wait till the water. So that's the song.
- 48:40Great stuff. Babyface writes them on acoustic
- 48:43guitar and they sound good. That's why if you go to the back
- 48:46to the 90s, you'll see a lot of the R&B songs became country
- 48:49songs too 'cause they, they translated so well, you know?
- 48:55So just to give you a little, I play this song, but the
- 48:57copyright, you know, will take down the whole episode.
- 49:00You know how these things go, sadly.
- 49:02OK, I just looked at the time. We're going to take this quick
- 49:06break real quick when we get back here, Matt and I, we're
- 49:12going to give you what we're going to show you the rest of
- 49:14this, this little list here, but we're going to give you our top
- 49:17song of the year that we think is definitive plus honorable
- 49:22mention, plus the album of the year.
- 49:25And I'm going to say to Matt, I'm not going to pick what's the
- 49:28story, Morning Glory 'cause we already did that.
- 49:30So I'm going to be a little different.
- 49:31I think I'll do the same, even though that would be tempting
- 49:34so. Yes, but you know what I mean?
- 49:38So we're going to tend to that when we get back.
- 49:41And also what what are the, what are your choices out there?
- 49:45And we want to hear what you think and what was in your CD
- 49:49rack in 1995. So that's very exciting.
- 49:52So don't go anywhere. This is 1995 a musical odyssey
- 49:57special for our members only right here on Real Deal Media.
- 50:01I'll be right back. Yeah.
- 50:33How many special people change? How many lives are living
- 50:38Strange? Where were you while we were
- 50:41getting high? Slowly walking down the hall
- 50:48faster than the cannonball? Where were you while we were
- 50:53getting? High.
- 50:55Someday you will find me car beneath the landslide in a
- 51:02champagne soup And over in the sky.
- 51:07Someday you will find me car beneath the landslide.
- 51:14It's a champagne supernova. A champagne supernova in the
- 51:20sky. Wake up the dawn and ask her
- 51:25why. A dream, A dream She never dies.
- 51:29Wipe that tear away now from your eye.
- 51:35Slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball.
- 51:40Where were you? Well, we were getting high.
- 51:45Someday you will find me caught beneath the landslide In a
- 51:52champagne supernova in the sky. Someday you will find me caught
- 52:00beneath the landslide in a champagne supernova.
- 52:06A. Champagne Supernova Because
- 52:09people believe that, that they're going to get away for
- 52:15the summer, fall. But you and I, we live and die.
- 52:21The world's still spinning around.
- 52:23We don't know. Why?
- 52:26Why? Why?
- 52:29Why? Why?
- 52:55How many special people change? How many lives are living
- 53:00strange? Where were you while we were
- 53:03getting high? Slowly walking down the hall
- 53:10faster than a cannonball. Where were you while we were
- 53:15getting high? Someday you will finally call
- 53:20Beneath the landslide in a champagne supernova in the sky.
- 53:28Someday you will find me called beneath the landslide in a
- 53:35champagne supernova. A champagne supernova 'cause
- 53:41people believe that they're going to get away for the
- 53:47summer. Come on.
- 53:49But you and I, we live and die. The world's still standing
- 53:54around. We don't know why.
- 53:58Bye. All right, all right.
- 54:38Welcome back, everybody. Welcome back to Real Deal
- 54:42Media's Members Only night right here at the 1995 A Musical
- 54:47Odyssey for Members Only. I am still Dean Ryan, whose
- 54:51light went off. It fell down, actually.
- 54:56I am fighting a cold, too. I'm, I'm getting sick too.
- 55:00I'm getting sick here tonight. Throw to us hopefully I you
- 55:05know, I got to say God's honest truth and and Matt will tell you
- 55:11I was, I had a terrible cold and I he called me and he said, you
- 55:17know, everything's so good. And I said, yeah, I'm not sure
- 55:19I'm going to make it. I was sneezing, sneezing.
- 55:22And we began to start talking about, you know, the, the year
- 55:27in music that year. And just those happy, nostalgic
- 55:30thoughts came to mind. And I started feeling better.
- 55:35So kudos and credit to Matt Millen for nursing me back to
- 55:40health for that, because it truly did help.
- 55:42You know it's good feeling, good cheer.
- 55:44It's. But I, I made it up.
- 55:46So it is it is it is, you know, and and it was a transitional
- 55:53time in your life. It is mine as well is you know,
- 55:58you know much on a smaller level, but it was a big year for
- 56:02a lot of people the. First time I lived abroad that
- 56:05you know, that become a habit in my life since, but it was first
- 56:09time so. Interesting, Interesting.
- 56:13Yeah. A lot of people that age, you
- 56:15know, they, they don't have those big thoughts, but you
- 56:17certainly did and, and, and it certainly played the theme over
- 56:20your career. No doubt about that.
- 56:23OK, so we're going to get into, as we have the, the race home
- 56:28now, the sunset home here. We're going to finish this list
- 56:32real quick and, and breeze through it.
- 56:33And then we're going to tell you the big songs that we thought
- 56:37made 1995 the our, our, our pick.
- 56:40We want to hear your picks too. And then we're going to get into
- 56:42the album that made the year. But to to pick up where we last
- 56:47left off, we're going to breeze swiftly and fastly through this
- 56:51one here. And yes, we'll play Tootsie
- 56:54Roll. Please, somebody remind me.
- 56:56OK, we'll get to that. So, yeah, TLC Waterfalls, take a
- 57:01bow by Madonna. That was a big with babyface and
- 57:08she looked great, I thought in that period for me from my
- 57:12taste. And that was a great song, which
- 57:16led her to star in Evita the year next.
- 57:18And then here's more of the. Exhale, shoot.
- 57:20Shoot in 96, right? Yeah.
- 57:22That's right, the following year with Antonio.
- 57:26I'm so sick of this out exhale. Shoop, shoop.
- 57:30I thought it was her worst. I don't know why they keep
- 57:33promoting that. There's Montel Jordan.
- 57:38Never get far. This guy still lives in the
- 57:41house party echo chambers. No matter where you go, you're
- 57:44always going to hear Montel Jordan.
- 57:46This is how we do it. It's.
- 57:48Just stay iconic. It's a it's iconic, man.
- 57:52You know, rumor has it, or it's not even rumor.
- 57:54He was like 6 foot six or something.
- 57:56He was like huge. He was a tall guy.
- 57:59So there's that one. And then we're going to breeze
- 58:02through this one getting more Mariah Carey.
- 58:04I can't get enough of that. TLC, of course, Coolio huge and
- 58:11the number one and this was a huge song. 1 sweet day boys to
- 58:16men and Mariah Carey and OK, that's the one song that that is
- 58:22the exception to the rule for me when it comes to Mariah Carey.
- 58:25That's. 'Cause she had boys to men with
- 58:27her. Well, if you're saying I'm
- 58:30biased because of that, you're absolutely correct.
- 58:32Yeah, because boys to men. They were a proper R&B group,
- 58:36man they were. They were a lot.
- 58:39A modern cut to the throwbacks of the great R&B groups of the
- 58:4360s. From Philly.
- 58:44Yeah, they were the Temptations of the 90s, whereas Pink Floyd
- 58:47was the Radiohead. Of the only thing I will never
- 58:50forgive them for is another bad creation.
- 58:54I don't know if I remember that 10.
- 58:56Jesus Christ, it was like 8 year old kids.
- 58:59They they had a rap band called, you know, at the playground.
- 59:03You know you don't remember at the playground.
- 59:06No, I barely remember Tootsie Roll.
- 59:08OK, that's. Another bad creation was like if
- 59:14Criss Cross were if they were half the age of Criss Cross,
- 59:18they were like 7 year old kids. Yeah, OK.
- 59:22I I see what you're saying on that.
- 59:24Yeah, it was, it was a video, right?
- 59:27For. That.
- 59:27But Boys to Men were a real proper R&D band, and I'll always
- 59:33have a lot of mad respect for them.
- 59:36OK, so, so, so the albums turning 30, we we kind of give
- 59:43you a little taste on that. Of course there's a couple.
- 59:48There's some that we we didn't mention and and they're worth
- 59:51mentioning and I'm going to name those now and then Matt's going
- 59:54to give you his pick for the album of the year.
- 59:58But this is worth noting. No doubts.
- 1:00:01Tragic Kingdom. Incredible, incredible album.
- 1:00:05It featured I'm just a girl. Spider webs, don't cry.
- 1:00:10Excuse me, don't speak. They had they had like 8 singles
- 1:00:15on that album. They did.
- 1:00:18They did and and and what they did for Orange County was
- 1:00:22incredible. I've actually recorded at the
- 1:00:25same studio studio as they recorded I.
- 1:00:27Recorded with the Long Beach engineers, they they really
- 1:00:30brought, I mean, the Long Beach scene was famous in California,
- 1:00:32but they really brought it to the world, so.
- 1:00:35Absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:00:37So they were. They were really close, you
- 1:00:39know, they were really good friends with Sublime.
- 1:00:42They're really close to them. They're all really close knit,
- 1:00:44the Long Beach scene, so. OK, Jagged Little Pill, we
- 1:00:49mentioned that, but here, here's a little fun fact to date Jagged
- 1:00:52Little Pill by Alanis Morissette, the the daughter of
- 1:00:56Canada has sold, get this spent 33 million copies to date, 33
- 1:01:03million. Think about that.
- 1:01:05That's what is in It's almost like one in every eight in
- 1:01:09America. Am I doing that right?
- 1:01:11It's triple. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:15I just forget she's Canadian so much.
- 1:01:17I mean, she did feel bad for Dave Kuye from Full House.
- 1:01:21I mean, boy, did he get out it, it was what a terrible thing.
- 1:01:24But anyways, we we love it so. Again, it's well deserved.
- 1:01:29Those 33 million sales are well deserved, I mean.
- 1:01:32Yeah. Just for all, just just once
- 1:01:35again for her just being a really authentic musician.
- 1:01:39Yeah, no, Contrived. Yeah.
- 1:01:42You also saw the birth of of kind of the the angry rock too,
- 1:01:46which Alanis Morris, but you saw kind of a a faction of that and
- 1:01:51you saw the introduction of the band garbage with the Shirley
- 1:01:54Manson at the helm. Girl, yeah.
- 1:01:56Stupid girl. Scottish Band.
- 1:02:00Mixed with producers from Nirvana and and the the
- 1:02:03industry, it worked out very well.
- 1:02:06OK, so there's that one. But Matt, I'm going to go to you
- 1:02:08now. Tell us in in great
- 1:02:10articulation, in detail what Matt Millen believes the album
- 1:02:17of 1995 for him was. If you could add what you
- 1:02:22thought back then, the album of the year was just just add.
- 1:02:26First off, I've got to mention the Alice In Chains eponymous
- 1:02:30album. You know, Alice In Chains, you
- 1:02:34know, for me also as a huge Stoner rock fan, they are a
- 1:02:38staple. They're one of the most
- 1:02:39important bands and what they did, especially for the Stoner
- 1:02:43rock scene and Alice, the Alice In Chains album is very it's one
- 1:02:48of those it's very soft, but really heavy at the same time.
- 1:02:52And you know, heaven beside you is just as absolute.
- 1:02:56And it over now it's it's just such an amazing album.
- 1:03:00It was just a continuation where they could really do no wrong.
- 1:03:04And it was Lane Staley's last album.
- 1:03:07So very, very important album. Let's see.
- 1:03:14I have to say my favorite album though, would be Caius and the
- 1:03:19Circus Leaves Town. Probably most of you haven't
- 1:03:25heard it, but you'll hear where Queens of the Stone Age came
- 1:03:28from. It's very much Josh Holmes
- 1:03:33really, really distinct, unique, heavy distorted guitar sound was
- 1:03:42it's it's not the Caius's best album, but it's still quite a
- 1:03:46really, really strong album. There's a song Catamaran that's
- 1:03:50just really, really haunting. It's just a really good it is,
- 1:03:55you know, they are the desert, the desert rock band.
- 1:03:58So it's a very, very important album, but my favorite album of
- 1:04:0295 back then, Saigon Kick, Devil in the Details, that was one I
- 1:04:09was listening to the most, and I just started listening to it
- 1:04:12again. It's a fucking great album, man,
- 1:04:15really is. What's it called?
- 1:04:17Saigon Kick? Saigon Kick is the name of the
- 1:04:20band and a devil in the details. OK.
- 1:04:24OK, they were a rock band from Miami and they had a huge hit in
- 1:04:30the late 80s where they, it looks like they were going to
- 1:04:33become a hair metal band, but then they just went on a
- 1:04:36complete left turn and really produced some fantastic music.
- 1:04:40And devil in the details, like there's a song, Uncle Edgar.
- 1:04:44I mean, the lyrics were always really, really cool.
- 1:04:47Like Uncle Edgar is from the perspective of one of Edgar
- 1:04:50Allan Poe's stories, which I thought was a really cool idea
- 1:04:53for a song. So Yep, that's it.
- 1:05:00Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up.
- 1:05:09Shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up.
- 1:05:25So there you go. There, there's a little sample
- 1:05:27for you. It's Saigon.
- 1:05:28So that's what you listen to. Yeah, it's, it's still a Hard
- 1:05:32Rock album, but there's a lot of there's a lot of different
- 1:05:35texture and flavor in it. I I still think it's a great
- 1:05:38album, but I have to go. I mean, yeah, if, if I, if we
- 1:05:46weren't eliminating Oasis and I eliminated melancholy and the
- 1:05:49infinite sadness. So I'm that's why I'm going with
- 1:05:51Caius so. Well, you could pick.
- 1:05:53You could pick that one. You could totally pick.
- 1:05:55I would, I would probably. So Alice In Chains I'd probably
- 1:06:00put just slightly below in the bends as well.
- 1:06:03The Alice In Chains and the Bends would be #2 and #1 would
- 1:06:07be what's the story? And the circus leaves town, and
- 1:06:12melancholy, and the infinite sadness.
- 1:06:16Interest. OK, here's what some of the
- 1:06:18members here's what some of the 9 owls are saying.
- 1:06:20We're going to go through this. Lena says yeah.
- 1:06:23Doctor Mellon is correct. Yeah, he really.
- 1:06:26He saved me for that. I will.
- 1:06:30Maddie, you know what the next episode we're going to do one
- 1:06:33hit wonders. That's a great.
- 1:06:35I love that category. Thank you for that amazing,
- 1:06:40amazing thought. Here we have Frankie Elliott of
- 1:06:43Pasadena saying 90s had some great stuff basically right
- 1:06:46before the industry went to the into digital overproduced
- 1:06:49counterfeit digital domain. Yeah, look, you're saying it
- 1:06:52went digital? Totally right.
- 1:06:54And look up the what's called the Loudness wars.
- 1:06:57Interesting. Yeah.
- 1:06:58Which I don't know if you've ever heard of that.
- 1:07:00Term No. I'm.
- 1:07:02Not the producers started heavily compressing music.
- 1:07:06Yeah, OK. So when when my first demo like
- 1:07:11in 2000 or 2001, it was done on dat tape just right on the cuffs
- 1:07:18before going old digital. So I had a a a taste of the old,
- 1:07:22the old world just before it went left us.
- 1:07:25But thank you for that. The loudness wars they were,
- 1:07:28they were competing. They were basically bringing the
- 1:07:30floor and the ceiling closer together.
- 1:07:32So all the dynamic, so easier listening to like in the car.
- 1:07:36But then what you did is you just destroyed all the dynamics
- 1:07:39of the the music. It's so in, in terms of
- 1:07:43engineering, like I know Oasis did this for their first record.
- 1:07:47It, it's called brick Walling. And to, to explain what that is
- 1:07:51to people. So when you're recording the
- 1:07:53drums, the guitars, vocals, the producer told the engineer to
- 1:07:57put all levels to the Max and just it evens everything out and
- 1:08:01then you have this big wall of sound.
- 1:08:04Sometimes it can work, sometimes it can't work.
- 1:08:07That that was one of the. Parts of the loudness wars, was
- 1:08:10that actually? The brick walling.
- 1:08:13OK, that's interesting. Yes, for that Frankie Ellett
- 1:08:17says STP. No, not 90.
- 1:08:19There were 94 now Foo Fighters. Yes, Foo Fighters.
- 1:08:22The first album came out in 95. It was the post death album.
- 1:08:28The song I remember from that is, how did remember that?
- 1:08:33Remember that song? How did it go?
- 1:08:36It was the Mentos commercial. It was.
- 1:08:38You remember what I mean? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:42Let's talk about it and carry on reasons all brand new.
- 1:08:50Yeah. Let's talk about it, Carry.
- 1:09:02On and he had the ponytails, yeah.
- 1:09:05Yeah, I have nothing but love for Dave Grohl, though.
- 1:09:08He's a really important figure in music.
- 1:09:11Again. See, I'm trying to think.
- 1:09:14At the time I thought it was weird for me.
- 1:09:17I'm such a prude back then. What's wrong with me?
- 1:09:20I thought it was weird. I always kind of got creeped out
- 1:09:23by that guy named Pat Smear. I had no idea what he was about
- 1:09:29because I, I, I think being outrageous and over the, you
- 1:09:33know, like cynical outrageous. Back then in the 90s, it was
- 1:09:38new. No one was doing it before, but
- 1:09:40they definitely, hey, Foo Fighters, say what you want,
- 1:09:43their videos, they had a long list of videos.
- 1:09:47They were great. They they didn't take themselves
- 1:09:51too seriously. I just always preferred Dave
- 1:09:53Grohl on the behind the kit. He's just just got such a he's
- 1:09:58like if, if you watch him drumming, he is a very exciting
- 1:10:02drummer to watch. What what I don't like about
- 1:10:05what they've turned into now Well, I'm a little peeved of of
- 1:10:09how Taylor Hawkins died and why he died.
- 1:10:12That's all different story. But you know, you listen to the
- 1:10:14new stuff now, Dave Grohl, like the past couple 5 albums, it's
- 1:10:18always, you know, just yelling at the top of his lungs when the
- 1:10:23guy can sing. He could be a soulful guy.
- 1:10:26So that he's, you know, he, he grew up with bands like Boy VOD.
- 1:10:30So I mean, that's, that's his bread and butter, you know, like
- 1:10:33he grew. Up fan rush Rush is his favorite
- 1:10:36band he. He but he also grew up listening
- 1:10:38to thrash metal like he's a huge boy VOD fan I'm.
- 1:10:43I'm just thinking, you know, he's like 50 something now.
- 1:10:46He's got a soulful album in him, if he did a solo one, because I
- 1:10:51heard him, well, I heard him sing with Norah Jones.
- 1:10:56You know who that is? Right.
- 1:10:56Yeah, yeah. Yeah, they did, Matt, until you
- 1:11:00go look at this. They did a cover together, a
- 1:11:01duet of maybe. I'm amazed.
- 1:11:04And it was one of the greatest. It's it's totally awesome.
- 1:11:08And I wish you would celebrate that portion of his talent a bit
- 1:11:12more. You know, the oldest.
- 1:11:14Song man Paul McCartney's wish, that is.
- 1:11:17But yeah, with, with Dave Grohl, like every time he works, works
- 1:11:21with Josh Holm, he's playing drums and I just, I love when he
- 1:11:26and Josh Holm work together. So I, I, I, I would wish that he
- 1:11:31would just join Queens of the Stone Age for good, to be
- 1:11:34honest, so. Yeah.
- 1:11:37Queens of the Stone Age best album, their first one, which
- 1:11:40is. John Holmes.
- 1:11:42Did you say John Holmes? Josh Holmes.
- 1:11:45Oh, OK, because John Holmes is a totally different talent.
- 1:11:48No, no, the Queens of the Stone Age dude.
- 1:11:54John Holmes is more my my my friend's V8X files collection.
- 1:12:01What is this episode turn into? I don't know.
- 1:12:04Rush was the best. Yes, they're Canadian.
- 1:12:06Absolutely. Rush's like Rush's songs up to
- 1:12:09their albums up. The moving pictures were all
- 1:12:11perfect. Again, Rush wasn't for me.
- 1:12:15It's a musician's band and musicians.
- 1:12:17Musicians, however, I'll. Chance, man.
- 1:12:21Seriously. Well, I'm trying to think of the
- 1:12:24other the other Canadian band from that was Grand Funk
- 1:12:28Railroad. Is that what I'm thinking of?
- 1:12:30Yeah, there, there were a couple big ones there was.
- 1:12:33I don't know if they were. You can turn or OverDrive.
- 1:12:36Yeah, something like that. Yeah, I know, I know.
- 1:12:39You know them. Oh, oh, yeah.
- 1:12:41Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, Lena says.
- 1:12:43John Holmes. Dean G, please, we're going back
- 1:12:45to the No, it's I thought he John Josh.
- 1:12:49John Holmes, Josh. Yes.
- 1:12:51Yes, yes, yes. He was the Kaius, He's in Kaius
- 1:12:54as well as he was the Kaius. OK, so anyways, so 1995 here is
- 1:13:02the group or the band or the album that I'm picking.
- 1:13:08It is this one right here, Mariah.
- 1:13:11Carey one. Radioheads, the bands, This was
- 1:13:22the tune. Got me through so bad.
- 1:13:25Bad days in high school. Two jumps in a week?
- 1:13:40I bet you think that's pretty clever, don't you, boy?
- 1:13:49Fly along. Your motorcycle watching on the
- 1:13:52ground. Kill yourself, you recognition.
- 1:14:03Kill yourself to never start. You're broken of the moon.
- 1:14:12You're trying to sell. To you, You don't leave me.
- 1:14:39OK, that album had such a huge effect on me.
- 1:14:44Radiohead as well. And Frankie.
- 1:14:47Yes, John Holmes is a porn star. Josh Holm.
- 1:14:54Oh God, this turn into we had such great intentions.
- 1:14:58So that's my pick. Quickly, did you want to give
- 1:15:04out a OK song of the year, Song of the year that you thought?
- 1:15:14I'll go first. I'll go. 1st if you.
- 1:15:16Give you time. Play this one, Uncle Edgar.
- 1:15:21OK, Uncle Edgar Saigon. Kick.
- 1:15:25Saigon kick. OK, let me see if we can find
- 1:15:27it. Saigon Kick uncle and tell us
- 1:15:29about it. Well, tell us about it.
- 1:15:31Why I find it. Go ahead.
- 1:15:33I just love it too, because it's it's about Edgar Allan Poe, but
- 1:15:37it's from the perspective of one of his stories, which I thought
- 1:15:40it was just at the time in particular, I thought that was
- 1:15:43such a cool idea for a song. OK, so let me see if I can find
- 1:15:49it. And as I'm finding this, oh,
- 1:15:52here it is. But I'm going to pick a
- 1:15:54Radiohead song for the song of the year.
- 1:15:57OK, so now you tell me. Tell me which one that is.
- 1:16:00I wanted you to play Uncle Edgar for a second.
- 1:16:02First, OK, OK, I'll play it. But.
- 1:16:04That was my 1995 Song of the Year.
- 1:16:07So 1995 Song of the Year. OK, and there it is.
- 1:16:35Man, I like this band. I'm I'm serious.
- 1:16:37Why don't you It's. A great song.
- 1:16:40I like this band already. OK, so.
- 1:17:04They're really good bands, a really underrated band.
- 1:17:07So but then my tell me would be would be Street Spirit.
- 1:17:13Street spirit, Radiohead Street spirit.
- 1:17:16OK, I kind of played that earlier.
- 1:17:19I, I probably butchered it, but it just so you know what I was
- 1:17:23trying to achieve. Here is the Here is Matt's
- 1:17:31cousin's band. Here it is Radiohead Street
- 1:17:34Spirit. There it is.
- 1:17:57Those of houses up and down on me, I can't feel them.
- 1:18:08Your hands touching me, All these things into position.
- 1:18:14All these things are one. They swallow all.
- 1:18:37Great, great, great song. Great.
- 1:18:39I cannot tell you how many times I listen to that my.
- 1:18:42Cousin sitting in the chair over there.
- 1:18:45Yeah, yeah, let's show, let me show the people who he's on the
- 1:18:51the right, the bottom. Right there he is.
- 1:18:53Look, he has the same ear as you.
- 1:18:55Oh, what a family trait I. Know Oh my.
- 1:19:00God, this show OK, so honorable mentioned just real quick
- 1:19:05because Matt didn't even know who this band was, but he might.
- 1:19:10This this was a 1995 song, and you might know this one here.
- 1:19:17This is Space Hog. In the meantime, brothers in the
- 1:19:22band. Here it is.
- 1:19:28Look at that 95 style. Look at that.
- 1:19:31Oh shit, I know this song. Yeah, there we go.
- 1:20:02Music. Anyways, that's space hog, so
- 1:20:12there you have that one. So those are our picks for an
- 1:20:17incredible year that will live a lifetime in our memories,
- 1:20:23certainly in as well as this episode.
- 1:20:26Matt, any kind of final, final thoughts about that incredible
- 1:20:32year of music? Wow, this is an incredible year.
- 1:20:36I mean, certainly for for me, my third year in college.
- 1:20:41So wow, just kind of speechless thinking about that actually.
- 1:20:47But also living abroad for the first time just I discovered the
- 1:20:54band Voivod then too because of my buddies.
- 1:20:58It was a real exploration in the different areas of music for me.
- 1:21:03Yeah. I was looking so like heavy
- 1:21:07metal for years and punk so and you know, that was a year where
- 1:21:12I I really started breaking away, not breaking away.
- 1:21:16I mean, I still love heavy metal and punk, but expand, you know,
- 1:21:20branching out so. Well, I was all about the
- 1:21:23Tootsie Roll. What's that?
- 1:21:28What's that? What's that damn song's name?
- 1:21:31What did we talk about earlier? It's called Tootsie Roll.
- 1:21:35Whatever. So anyways, great year.
- 1:21:37We hope you enjoyed this review. You can catch this on Spotify at
- 1:21:42some point in time. And we're really trying to honor
- 1:21:46some of the not just history long ago in in the arts, but
- 1:21:50history that feels somewhat not that long ago.
- 1:21:54Although 30 years is man God, the numbers don't lie, right,
- 1:21:59Matt? OK, so when we our next episode,
- 1:22:03we do, we're really going to concentrate and make an effort
- 1:22:06on one hit wonders. How fun is that going to be,
- 1:22:10Matt? Oh, absolutely.
- 1:22:12One hit wonders. Forget the like Black Betty.
- 1:22:18Yeah, Black Betty. Black Betty.
- 1:22:22Who do you think has the most one hit wonders like the 80s
- 1:22:25compared to the 90s? That's a good question.
- 1:22:28I mean, certainly in the age of Napster is, you know, in the the
- 1:22:33modern age there's quite a bit, but for 80s and 90s.
- 1:22:38We'll, we'll have to think about that one.
- 1:22:39But on that note, I'll catch everybody soon over the weekend.
- 1:22:43And in the meanwhile, I'll leave you with something that really
- 1:22:46represents how we've all evolved since 1995, like a nice glass of
- 1:22:52Chardonnay, and an ironic one at that.
- 1:22:56Good night, everybody, and see you soon.
- 1:22:59Always remember to stay tuned. Stay, stay awake.
- 1:23:02Sending out. Won't you to know that I am
- 1:23:07happy for you? I wish nothing but the best for
- 1:23:18you both. An older version of me she
- 1:23:24perverted like me, she go down on you when I feared.
- 1:23:29Her. She.
- 1:23:31Speak out currently. Would she have your baby?
- 1:23:36I'm sure she'd make her really excellent mother because the
- 1:23:42love that she gave that we made wasn't able to make it enough
- 1:23:45for you to be open wide. No.
- 1:23:52And every time you speak her name, she know how you told me
- 1:23:56for me until you died. Until you died.
- 1:24:00But you're still alive and now here to remind me how.
- 1:24:07Unless you left when you went away.
- 1:24:10It's not fair to the name across I bear out your gates.
- 1:24:21Make yo-yo yo audio. You seem very well.
- 1:24:31Seems look peaceful. I'm not quite as well.
- 1:24:41I thought you should know. Did you forget about me, Mr.
- 1:24:49Duplicity? I hate to bug you.
- 1:24:52In the middle of it was a slap in the face how quickly I was
- 1:25:00replaced. And are you thinking when you
- 1:25:05fuck her 'cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't
- 1:25:09able to make it on a for you to be open wide?
- 1:25:14No, every time you speak a name. Does she know how you told me
- 1:25:20you'd hold me until you died? Until you died?
- 1:25:24What are you sad I died to remind you?
- 1:25:31I'll mess you left me in the middle.
- 1:25:36It's not fair to deny a cross. I bear out you, gave me, you,
- 1:25:46you, you out of you.
