0:09
SPEAKER_01: Hi, and welcome to this week's episode of Sass and Steps.
0:13
SPEAKER_01: We are your hosts.
0:14
SPEAKER_01: I'm Lisa.
0:15
SPEAKER_01: I'm Britney.
0:16
SPEAKER_01: And today we are gathered to talk about episode six of Six Feet Under and also to celebrate the life of Mildred Hattie Effinger Jones, who would rather freeze to death than have to spend one more minute with her grumpy ass husband.
0:32
SPEAKER_01: He was so angry that she left the winner.
0:35
SPEAKER_01: He's like, bitch, we live in the desert.
0:38
SPEAKER_01: What that bitch.
0:40
SPEAKER_01: Well, he said it wasn't breakfast before nightfall.
0:42
SPEAKER_01: Oh, what an awful, awful person.
0:45
SPEAKER_01: Anyway.
0:46
SPEAKER_01: Fucking grump.
0:48
SPEAKER_01: What are we drinking to celebrate Hattie?
0:51
SPEAKER_01: Bodka cranberries.
0:52
SPEAKER_01: Bodka cranberries.
0:53
SPEAKER_01: I don't know why that connects to the episode, but that's what we decided on tonight.
0:58
SPEAKER_01: Yes.
1:00
SPEAKER_00: It checks off all the marks.
1:02
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's good for you.
1:04
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
1:04
SPEAKER_01: And vodka's low on calories, I think.
1:07
SPEAKER_01: Or at least I tell myself.
1:09
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
1:10
SPEAKER_01: All of it.
1:11
SPEAKER_01: Totally.
1:13
unknown: Yeah.
1:17
SPEAKER_01: We forgot to talk about this on our pre-show.
1:21
SPEAKER_01: But for many podcast listeners, listeners, fans of true crime, we had some big fucking news this week.
1:31
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
1:32
SPEAKER_00: And I fuck Lisa.
1:34
SPEAKER_00: Because I texted you this, like when I found out when I heard it on the radio, I was like, oh shit.
1:38
SPEAKER_00: Like, I think I was driving and I waited until I got to a red light.
1:41
SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Text Lisa.
1:43
SPEAKER_00: And Siri was like, What do you want to say?
1:45
SPEAKER_00: And I was like, He's out of prison.
1:47
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
1:48
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
1:48
SPEAKER_00: And you were like, pre-show, we should make it a whole show.
1:51
SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Lisa's right about that.
1:54
SPEAKER_01: Well, we were supposed to do both, but like, yeah.
1:57
SPEAKER_01: But yeah, so uh for those of you who know who Ednan Sayed is, who have listened to the serial podcast, and hopefully you went further than that and listened to Truth and Justice andor Undisclosed.
2:15
SPEAKER_01: Serial is only is honestly really the tip of the iceberg.
2:19
SPEAKER_01: But his conviction was vacated this week, uh, in like totally swift fashion, shackles coming off, and he went home.
2:30
SPEAKER_01: And I was trying to, I was the date the Monday, which was the court date, I was working.
2:40
SPEAKER_01: It was like the very end of my work day, and I'm like trying to follow along on the Twitter feed as they're you know, letting letting us know like what's happening inside the courtroom.
2:52
SPEAKER_01: And then as soon as I see like conviction vacated, I was like, oh my god, I don't even know this person, and I'm so fucking happy for him and his family.
3:00
SPEAKER_01: I'm so fucking happy.
3:02
SPEAKER_01: But with that being said, one of the reasons the conviction was vacated is because there were they found notes in the police file of two websites.
3:15
SPEAKER_00: I heard there was new evidence that brought up like two new suspects.
3:20
SPEAKER_00: That's all I heard because I didn't want to look at it.
3:22
SPEAKER_00: It's not it's not new evidence.
3:24
SPEAKER_00: You gotta be fucking kidding me.
3:26
SPEAKER_01: This was in the police file, and because of that, it was a huge Brady violation.
3:33
SPEAKER_01: I read the I read the whole motion that the court put out the week before, like before before he he went to court to have to see if they would vacate the conviction.
3:44
SPEAKER_01: So I read it and it outlined two suspects.
3:49
SPEAKER_01: They don't say who they are, um, and they don't say like which one is which.
3:54
SPEAKER_01: But the gist of it is that one suspect was overheard threatening to kill Hay and had means, motive, and opportunity.
4:08
SPEAKER_01: And one of the suspects there were like assault assault charges.
4:15
SPEAKER_01: Uh I don't like I don't want to screw this up and I don't remember exactly what it said, but and what and one of the suspects had a relative living where Hayes car was found, so they don't say which one had which, or like I definitely know who one of the suspects is because I figured it out.
4:38
SPEAKER_00: You and I both, yeah.
4:40
SPEAKER_00: Are we talking about like the sheriff's son?
4:43
SPEAKER_01: Well, I don't I don't necessarily want, I mean, I don't know, whatever.
4:48
SPEAKER_01: But this is just our speculation.
4:50
SPEAKER_00: We're not saying it's set in stone, no, based off of what was on serial and the other podcasts that you and I were listening to.
4:58
SPEAKER_01: One of one of them makes mention that they gave one of the suspects polygraph that he he passed with flying colors, two polygraphs.
5:09
SPEAKER_01: There is a person who had two polygraphs that supposedly passed, and that was Mr.
5:15
SPEAKER_01: S, also known as Alonzo Sellers, also known as the guy who supposedly stumbled upon Hay's body when he went to take a piss at Legan Park.
5:24
SPEAKER_01: Oh shit, doesn't necessarily mean that he did anything, yeah, but but he's definitely one of the suspects that the motion mentions, and the other one, this one I'm less sure on, but the other one might be Jay because of the assault in a car, because his ex-girlfriend talked about her assault him assaulting her while she was in the car and her son was in the backseat.
5:55
SPEAKER_01: So it it's a little bit more vague, but it could be him.
5:58
SPEAKER_01: Now, had you asked me if any of those people really had motive, I don't see it, but I don't I don't know as much as everybody, you know, the the people closer to the case know.
6:14
SPEAKER_01: What I do know is that had I been the one investigating, I definitely would not have started with anybody except Don.
6:23
SPEAKER_01: Now I don't I'm not saying he did it, I'm just saying that he was never looked at, and that does that leaves so many questions unanswered.
6:31
SPEAKER_00: You know, especially like the fact that a couple years ago we drove through that park.
6:36
SPEAKER_00: Like, you don't kind of like accident like you don't when you're driving through that park, and it wasn't like just in 1999, like this park has a reputation, like prior to 1999, when like she was murdered, right?
6:52
SPEAKER_00: It's so fucking off-putting, yeah, regardless of the fact that her body was found there, that like you wouldn't you would want to try to get out of that park before you pull over to take a piss.
7:05
SPEAKER_00: Like you should know you would and you would no, but like even investigators that go to that park, like I think I shared like a video with you a couple years ago.
7:17
SPEAKER_00: Somebody was like investigating that park on like ghost hunters or something like that, or like a ghost hunter type show, and they made a quote that sticks with me for for some reason it's always stuck with me.
7:30
SPEAKER_00: It's like you'll find a body looking for a body in Lake and Park.
7:34
SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, yeah.
7:35
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so it's the fact that it's like that's a common like dumping ground for bodies, right?
7:41
SPEAKER_00: You don't just go there but and park your car, or he was driving like a semi-truck, right?
7:49
SPEAKER_00: No, that's the story.
7:50
SPEAKER_01: He was like working, he was driving like well, he was he was working, but I don't I don't know what he was driving.
7:54
SPEAKER_00: It's supposed to be driving like a track patriler or something in my head.
7:58
SPEAKER_00: Oh, I don't, yeah, I mean like a working those were tight roads too to be driving a track patriler.
8:04
SPEAKER_00: So I don't know.
8:04
SPEAKER_00: I just painted a picture in my head.
8:06
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I just I I know that he was his story is that he went home to get a tool that he needed for work and then he was heading back to work when he pulled over to take a piss.
8:17
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know.
8:19
SPEAKER_01: It it's it's a weird story, but sometimes it's and I'm not saying that he's innocent, I'm just saying that sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.
8:36
SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
8:37
SPEAKER_01: Like why was he driving that way?
8:40
SPEAKER_01: Why did he walk all that way to take a piss?
8:43
SPEAKER_01: Like I feel like if it was a lie, sometimes lies are simpler.
8:50
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because they they because you want to make them believable, and like the truth sometimes is the one that you're like, no, but I promise, like I know this is stupid, but so I don't know.
9:01
SPEAKER_01: You know, I don't I don't know if it's a lie, I don't know if it's the truth, I wasn't there.
9:08
SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, I just I just hope that one day we actually find out what the fuck happened, and I hope that her family gets actual justice, no matter no matter who did it, you know.
9:23
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't like when it comes down to it, it's just like it's giving her the respect of publicizing like who did this to her and not casting blame in the wrong direction, right?
9:38
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because I mean like she's probably up in heaven, upset that like her high school boyfriend's being accused of this and had to suffer for this if he didn't do it, which I believe he didn't.
9:50
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't think he did it either.
9:52
SPEAKER_01: I mean, listen, if the DNA comes back and and someone can definitive definitively say, nah, it was him, then that's different.
10:03
SPEAKER_01: But until that moment, my gut tells me he didn't.
10:08
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I mean, and I think I heard this on the radio because that's where I originally heard this anyway.
10:17
SPEAKER_00: I think he was quoted, I think he's on house arrest right now, so he was released from jail, but he still needs to be home and like in one location.
10:25
SPEAKER_00: And I think he was quoted saying, like, this isn't just like something that you listen to, this isn't like just a podcast, like, this is my life, and like just basically like it's really like good that like he got out, but like this isn't just like something that you hear and then you get over.
10:44
SPEAKER_00: Like, this is yeah, his story, and like it's it's more personal than we're making it when we just talk about like his name and the case.
10:53
SPEAKER_00: Like, it's not just a case, it's like it's somebody's like whole life, yeah, yeah.
10:57
SPEAKER_00: Which is horrible.
10:59
SPEAKER_00: Like, it's horrible that this man lost like so many years of his life.
11:03
SPEAKER_00: Was he he's gotta be like 38 now, right?
11:05
SPEAKER_00: He was like 18 when he was put in jail.
11:07
SPEAKER_00: He's like one or two years younger than me.
11:11
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was gonna say it's been like 24 years, yeah.
11:14
SPEAKER_00: Because they've been just 20.
11:16
SPEAKER_01: They grab their graduating class of 99, and I graduated in 97.
11:24
SPEAKER_01: Wow, so it's it's like I think about it like that.
11:30
SPEAKER_01: Like had I lost all those years, never even got to graduate high school and lost all those years of my life.
11:36
SPEAKER_01: Like, that's it's so sad, it really is sad, and especially for something that you know you say you didn't do, yeah.
11:48
SPEAKER_01: But but hopefully the state has um an open investigation, at least according to them, into those other people.
12:00
SPEAKER_01: Hopefully, there's an actual and truthful resolution soon.
12:06
SPEAKER_01: I know I'll be happy if that happens.
12:11
SPEAKER_01: Same.
12:12
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but getting back to six people getting back, yeah.
12:17
SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm happy you brought that up because we really meant to talk about that, and I'm happy that we mentioned it here.
12:21
SPEAKER_01: It's uh I know we were we were too busy with like weirdo neighbors and girlfriends and creepy parents, medical issues, yeah.
12:32
SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, and medical issues.
12:34
SPEAKER_01: One of my kids has COVID.
12:37
SPEAKER_01: Ugh.
12:38
SPEAKER_01: Ugh it it's been a rough week.
12:42
SPEAKER_01: It's been an exciting and busy and crazy week, but yeah, yeah, anyhow.
12:50
SPEAKER_00: So after we see Hattie pass away, well, we we see her dead body laying in bed.
12:56
SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, we never see her alive.
12:58
SPEAKER_00: No, um, the episode opens with Nate reading Charlotte Light, which is like the book, right?
13:07
SPEAKER_00: And Charlotte Light and Dark.
13:10
SPEAKER_00: And we see that Nate would rather read about Brenda than listen to her bitch about her client.
13:15
SPEAKER_00: And it's so true because she's like having a conversation with him in the kitchen about her client, and he's just like so.
13:21
SPEAKER_00: He's like uh Charlotte Light and Dark.
13:24
SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
13:24
SPEAKER_01: And what does she say?
13:25
SPEAKER_01: She's like, How about I get um clippers and cut off your dick?
13:28
SPEAKER_01: And he's like, Uh-huh.
13:30
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
13:31
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Brenda, keep bitching about your dog, he's just gonna read about it later.
13:35
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but like later on in the episode, like we see somebody else in the family reading the book too and being so engrossed in it.
13:42
SPEAKER_00: So I like how the book is still like relevant in this episode, but yeah, like you could see like Brenda getting a little pissed, like there, and then later on she gets really pissed.
13:51
SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I I mean I would be in that situation.
13:55
SPEAKER_01: It's clearly a source of disdain for her.
14:00
SPEAKER_00: Oh, for sure.
14:02
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, like literally, but um, after the scene, we see what can only be described as Ruth practicing her upcoming mime final exam.
14:12
SPEAKER_00: She's literally standing in the kitchen, just holding like this one pot, just standing there.
14:17
SPEAKER_00: And like Claire walks by and she's like, All right, mom, I'm leaving for school.
14:20
SPEAKER_01: Well, first David talks to her and he's like, What are you doing?
14:24
SPEAKER_01: And she's like, Well, I think I'm gonna organize a cabinet.
14:27
SPEAKER_01: So he's like, Um, okay, you okay?
14:29
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay, have a good day.
14:32
SPEAKER_01: And then later, Claire leaves for school and she's still just standing there.
14:37
SPEAKER_01: She must have like arms of steel because how is it not shaking?
14:41
SPEAKER_01: That pot looked heavy.
14:42
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, if you just hold your arms out, they're gonna start to burn.
14:49
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, do you remember a certain uh what do you call it?
14:53
SPEAKER_01: A pal, um, the the gym teacher.
14:56
SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, are you talking about the Italian restaurant?
15:01
SPEAKER_00: What?
15:01
SPEAKER_00: No, oh okay, no, I was thinking a pal in his other career.
15:33
SPEAKER_01: No, no, but but like the art specialist.
15:36
SPEAKER_01: What did you call what did we call art?
15:39
SPEAKER_01: No, oh okay.
15:42
SPEAKER_00: Hold on, I'm lost.
15:44
SPEAKER_00: Where are we going with this?
15:45
SPEAKER_01: But okay, but no, no, no, the gym teacher had a name, not I mean, I don't mean his name, but like, but it was like the STEM specialist, the art specialist, the dance specialist.
15:57
SPEAKER_01: What was the it wasn't the gym specialist?
16:00
SPEAKER_01: What was it?
16:01
SPEAKER_01: Physical education specialist.
16:03
SPEAKER_01: Was is that what we called it?
16:04
SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
16:05
SPEAKER_00: I worked there for three months.
16:07
SPEAKER_00: I know, but I I don't why I don't even remember.
16:10
SPEAKER_00: I worked there from September.
16:11
SPEAKER_00: I just know, but okay.
16:14
SPEAKER_00: Anyway, I thought it was the gym specialist.
16:17
SPEAKER_01: You know what?
16:18
SPEAKER_01: Maybe it could have been.
16:19
SPEAKER_01: I just feel like that doesn't sound right, but I remember that that was one of his quote unquote lessons that he used to have the kids.
16:31
SPEAKER_01: He used to do contests with them and make them all hold their arms out to see who could do it the longest because it's hard.
16:40
SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying it was right, I'm just saying that's what he did.
16:43
SPEAKER_00: Oh boy, what a fun special to have that day.
16:48
SPEAKER_00: Damn, yeah.
16:51
SPEAKER_00: Anyhow, anyway, so foreshadowing a little bit.
16:56
SPEAKER_00: You remember the part like later on in the episode where she's like, I found the jar of baby food.
17:02
SPEAKER_00: Like, do you think that happened?
17:04
SPEAKER_00: And that's why she was so in shock in the kitchen.
17:06
SPEAKER_01: No, but that happened.
17:10
SPEAKER_00: I know, but the baby food happened later.
17:14
SPEAKER_00: No, but she referenced it later.
17:16
SPEAKER_00: She said later on, like she was like, and I was cleaning.
17:19
SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
17:19
SPEAKER_00: We see her find it.
17:21
SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
17:22
SPEAKER_00: Maybe I looked away in that part.
17:23
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, maybe.
17:24
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because I was doing something else while I was watching it, so I probably didn't see that part again.
17:29
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because later, like you see her, she has everything from the cabinets like all over the kitchen, and you see her grab something out, and she just stares at it, and and then you realize that it was the baby food.
17:44
SPEAKER_00: Okay, yeah, I heard her reference it, but I was like also putting away clothes while I was watching it.
17:48
SPEAKER_00: So right, anyway, anyway, anyway, she's gonna she's gonna be the best mime out there holding that pot, not moving, nailing that mime exists.
17:57
SPEAKER_01: She's gonna have like arms of steel.
17:59
SPEAKER_01: Well, one arm anyway.
18:01
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, she uses those arms of steel later on, but okay, yeah.
18:09
SPEAKER_00: So Nate picks up his car and learns that he doesn't have to pay thanks to Nate Senior's unconventional business practices.
18:17
SPEAKER_00: This is what I meant by I don't know if I said it on the pre-show, if I said in the beginning of this episode, that this episode for the series and for this season especially really turns the key for the rest of the season.
18:34
SPEAKER_00: Like this unlocks, like this episode unlocks so much, especially with Nate noticing the malpractices within like the finances of the business.
18:45
SPEAKER_00: And so intrigued, Nate goes home and digs around the business of records, and he sees that it's not just one place that Sand is paid off, it's multiple places and investigates.
18:56
SPEAKER_00: But we'll hold off on that.
18:58
SPEAKER_00: Um, Mr.
18:59
SPEAKER_00: Jones meets with David regarding service services regarding his wife like passing away.
19:05
SPEAKER_00: And while David offers a double plot, Jones then just threatens him.
19:09
SPEAKER_00: He's like, Boy, is this part of your scheme to sell me two plots?
19:13
SPEAKER_00: Like, and he's just getting so like defensive with David.
19:17
SPEAKER_01: Just like, and don't touch my wife, don't do nothing to her.
19:22
SPEAKER_00: He was like, Don't pickle her.
19:24
SPEAKER_00: That shit was so funny.
19:25
SPEAKER_00: He's like, and don't go pickle in my wife, I want her as is.
19:30
SPEAKER_00: And David's like, Yeah, but two days after, like he's like, You don't want to see that.
19:36
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and he's like, I recommend, like, if you don't want to embalm that you cremate two days later, and he's like, Don't go touching my wife, uh-huh.
19:44
SPEAKER_00: I'll wave the embalming fee.
19:46
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's like, All right, he's like, and a single plot, he's like, No, I'll take the double plot.
19:50
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but he was like, You're trying to take advantage of me because I'm old, I'll kick your ass.
19:55
SPEAKER_01: No, you won't, Mr.
19:56
SPEAKER_01: Jones.
19:57
SPEAKER_01: No, you won't, but all right, double.
20:01
SPEAKER_00: It like that whole thing was funny, it really was like like he's going through like the most emotional and like nerve-wracking time of his life, yeah.
20:12
SPEAKER_00: But his reaction was kind of funny, yeah.
20:16
SPEAKER_00: And so you remember in the last episode when Ruth was like, but you have to come to church with me, and then we see like David going to church with Ruth, yeah.
20:25
SPEAKER_00: So they follow up on that, and David's still going to church with Ruth.
20:29
SPEAKER_00: So David and Ruth are leaving church, and yo, our best friend shows up, fucking Tracy, Link in arms with David, talking about like his girlfriend, and yeah, she's like his fiance, and Ruth is like fiancing.
20:46
SPEAKER_01: David's like, yeah, actually, we broke up, it's a sore subject, and he tries to pull her away, and she goes, Ow, you're hurting me.
20:54
SPEAKER_01: Shut the fuck up, Tracy.
20:56
SPEAKER_01: But this time she only introduced herself as Tracy Blair, she didn't she didn't use her second name, Montrose, whatever.
21:07
SPEAKER_00: Because she's trying to detach herself from her ex-husband.
21:10
SPEAKER_00: So weird how like side characters have such like a story, right?
21:17
SPEAKER_00: I think it's I don't know.
21:19
SPEAKER_01: She's been in practically every episode.
21:21
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was gonna say, like, there's a side character coming up that becomes the main character for their own episode.
21:30
SPEAKER_01: Okay, don't tell me anything.
21:31
SPEAKER_00: No, no, I'm not.
21:32
SPEAKER_00: I don't know if it's the next episode or not, but that one really like that was one of those episodes that stuck with me from when I was a kid overhearing and like watching parts of the show with my parents, and I think it's like a really, really important episode, but that's what I mean.
21:48
SPEAKER_00: Like, I like how this show takes the little side characters and like actually gives them like full fucking like plots, you know, yeah, like Tracy.
21:59
SPEAKER_00: So I'm just saying, like, she's not the only one, and I like the fact that the show does this, but no spoilers, it's fine.
22:05
SPEAKER_00: Okay, so now he has to deal with Tracy, and while he's like pulling her aside to talk to her, Hiram shows up and he tells Ruth that he misses her.
22:16
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
22:18
SPEAKER_01: Um David, when David comes back, I mean, Ruth is just kind of like whatever about it.
22:26
SPEAKER_01: But then she says, you know, I hope because she she mentions that she hadn't seen him in church and he said that he was given her space.
22:33
SPEAKER_01: And Ruth says that she hopes that he hasn't been sacrificing on her part.
22:39
SPEAKER_01: Which I feel like Ruth meant that.
22:44
SPEAKER_01: But I don't know, it's it's hard to read Ruth sometimes.
22:49
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
22:50
SPEAKER_00: It really is.
22:51
SPEAKER_00: She's such like a excuse me, she's such like a flip-floppy character.
22:57
SPEAKER_00: Like you think you know her, like you think she's so predictable, and then all of a sudden, like her behavior totally changes or her opinions totally change.
23:05
SPEAKER_00: It's so weird.
23:06
SPEAKER_00: Like I wouldn't be surprised if she like rolls a joint at the end of the episode.
23:11
SPEAKER_00: Like that's what I mean.
23:13
SPEAKER_01: And we kind of we get a little bit of examples at towards the end of the episode, but when they okay, but when David comes back, like after fucking shaking off the funeral whore and now the church whore, he he sees her talking with Hiram, and then he realizes who he is.
23:36
SPEAKER_01: He's like the hairdresser, and he gets pissy because he calls him son, yeah, and he gets pissy and is like, I'm gonna go get the car.
23:48
SPEAKER_01: Shut the fuck up, David.
23:49
SPEAKER_01: Your mother's a grown-ass woman, she can do what she wants and who she wants, but anyway, yeah, especially him leading his double life, yeah, exactly.
24:00
SPEAKER_01: Like you're in no position, you straight up lied about why you wanted to be a deacon, you're lying to ever basically everybody that you know about your love life, yeah, but you want to like judge her, at least she could be honest about it.
24:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she had the goods to tell you.
24:24
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, like, we'll see Ruth and Hiram again, which is nice because I kind of like how Hiram is with Ruth a lot.
24:32
SPEAKER_00: Like, I I think I think they're good, their interactions were always good.
24:36
SPEAKER_00: But back at the house, Claire gets woken up by Mr.
24:40
SPEAKER_00: Jones pounding on the door, and she tries to explain to him that like he should come back at a later time, like when her brothers are home.
24:46
SPEAKER_00: And he like sticks his foot in the door, and then he's like, Help, help, a white woman is hurting an elderly black, yeah.
24:53
SPEAKER_00: And then he's but mind you, he's like, open the door, bitch, or some shit.
24:56
SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, and she's sorry, you know what?
24:59
SPEAKER_00: Like, fuck this, and like he walks in, like demanding to see his wife, and like seriously, fuck no, hell fucking no, hell no.
25:09
SPEAKER_01: I don't care if you're grieving, you come to my door, you call me a bitch.
25:14
SPEAKER_01: First of all, I'm not hatty, don't call me a bitch, and then you want to yell.
25:20
SPEAKER_01: Like, I would have called the cops and been like, Look, I no, I digress because like I wrote in the notes, I know he's grieving, but fuck that.
25:34
SPEAKER_01: There's no excuse, there's no excuse for like being an asshole to this person who she fucking tells you she lives there, she tells you that nobody is home to help her, and you demand to come in.
25:44
SPEAKER_01: That was a real no, no, that's not okay.
25:47
SPEAKER_01: That's not okay.
25:48
SPEAKER_01: I don't care if you're fucking grieving.
25:50
SPEAKER_01: Call first.
25:52
SPEAKER_00: Like you remember, like in one of the earlier episodes, um, the one with the bread maker.
25:59
SPEAKER_00: I hate that episode so much, but um, you remember when they were like she's gonna be a casket jumper?
26:06
SPEAKER_00: Like, I feel like he would be a casket jumper, like he was showing all those behaviors, yeah.
26:11
SPEAKER_00: But anyway, so Brenda shows up and she finds that Mr.
26:15
SPEAKER_00: Jones is asleep, like on the couch in the like showing room, which is like on the main level, but like on Claire and like clutching her hand, and so she's like, I can't even like he's he's alive, yeah.
26:28
SPEAKER_01: She goes, she's like, Well, is he dead?
26:30
SPEAKER_01: And she's like, No, he's alive and farting, and he won't let go of my hand.
26:36
SPEAKER_00: And so Brenda was like looking for Nate because she like bought an antique chest and she needs help moving it, and Claire's like, I can help you, and she's like, No, I don't really feel like babysitting, right?
26:47
SPEAKER_01: Like being a fucking little bitch, fuck Brenda, but also I like Brenda, and I know she's she's a little flip-floppy in this episode, too.
26:58
SPEAKER_01: Because you like Brenda, oh Brenda, oh fuck you, Brenda, and then by the end, you're like, Oh, Brenda.
27:05
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know.
27:07
SPEAKER_00: This is why, like, I don't know, she's different from Ruth in that sense.
27:12
SPEAKER_00: Like, Ruth is such a wet noodle still, even though, like, towards the end we get a little flame under Ruth's ass, she's still a wet noodle, but Brenda's like spicy, I like it, but anyway.
27:23
SPEAKER_00: Um, and so oh, sorry.
27:26
SPEAKER_00: Oh, no, no, no, continue.
27:27
SPEAKER_01: No, I was gonna say, so like, because Claire, Claire asks her for help to get him off, yeah.
27:37
SPEAKER_01: And while she's trying to get her his hand off of hers, he wakes up and he's like yelling at them like if they're trying to steal his watch.
27:45
SPEAKER_01: And she's like, he's like, I'm gonna call the cops, and she's like, Yeah, I should be the one calling the cops on you for breaking and entering, yeah.
27:53
SPEAKER_00: And he still has no disregard to like or no regard.
27:59
SPEAKER_01: But then Claire says she'll change, and Brenda sits with him, she has a moment with him, and she, you know, she just like apologizes about his wife, and they make like a little bit of small talk, and then they're like, Are you gonna be okay here alone?
28:15
SPEAKER_01: Why are they leaving this man alone?
28:18
SPEAKER_01: That's kind of just this is ballsy.
28:21
SPEAKER_01: This is their house, though.
28:22
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I get that it's the funeral home and all that, it's a business, but it's also their house, their private space.
28:32
SPEAKER_01: Why are you leaving a fucking stranger in your private space?
28:37
SPEAKER_00: That just shows like how Claire's just like, I don't give a fuck anymore.
28:41
SPEAKER_00: But even Brenda, this is my house, I don't care.
28:44
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, like I I can't be that friend.
28:49
SPEAKER_01: I would be like, I don't feel right, I don't feel right.
28:52
SPEAKER_01: Like, should we call somebody?
28:54
SPEAKER_01: Brenda's like, but the antique chest, yeah, the antique chest can wait.
28:59
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
29:01
SPEAKER_00: After the scene, we see that David is doing like community outreach where he's like feeding the poor or something, and he's doing it through the church, and you know, the the two other side characters just happen to be there, Tracy and Hiram.
29:16
SPEAKER_00: And David like looks at both of them, he's like, What the fuck?
29:20
SPEAKER_00: Like, fuck my life, man.
29:22
SPEAKER_00: Like, I have to be doing this dumb fucking bullshit deacon service.
29:26
SPEAKER_00: These two assholes, like, I don't want to deal with her, and I don't want to look at him, right?
29:31
SPEAKER_01: Well, as as they're working, working Tracy is talking his ear off, and she she mentions like whatever recipe she brought that she got the idea from her honeymoon in Brazil, and then she goes on to say that they're the most beautiful people in the world, and that they're like mongrels and and beasts, and I'm like, because she's like and all that crossbreeding, and I'm just like holy fucking shit.
30:08
SPEAKER_01: How could you possibly just insult an entire fucking country, race of people, culture, whatever, and then call them beautiful at the same time, and like you're trying to compliment them, but you're calling them beasts and mongrel and and talk about cry holy fucking shit, Tracy.
30:30
SPEAKER_00: This is why you have no man, like yeah, I kind of zoned out just like how David did too.
30:35
SPEAKER_01: I was waiting for David to scream again, like how he did episode one, and then he didn't, and I was just like, Oh right, and then like right after he's done dealing with her fucking shit, then Hiram is like, Hey, uh, like, can you help me talk to your mom?
30:51
SPEAKER_01: He's he was like, fuck my life right now, like just shoot me, somebody shoot me.
30:58
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, now the story goes back to Nate, which I'm really happy about because I like Nate's storyline in this episode.
31:07
SPEAKER_00: So Nate's on a journey to track down the people from the ledger with questionable records, and so like I was saying earlier, like he noticed that people were kind of like paid in full.
31:18
SPEAKER_00: They had they had like little red stars.
31:21
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was like it said paid, but then there was some kind of like like note next to it, or some kind of like annotation that like made it different from everybody else.
31:32
SPEAKER_00: So he was tracking down some of those people, and the first person that he meets with is Mrs.
31:35
SPEAKER_00: Wilcox, and she proceeds to fuck with his head about you know, knowing knowing um Nate Singer, and then just like here.
31:47
SPEAKER_01: She calls him a cook.
31:48
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he was so funny and he was proud of you, and Nate's so funny.
31:53
SPEAKER_01: He's like, No, no, I'm Nate, not David.
31:55
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and she's like, No, I know the world ran off.
31:58
SPEAKER_00: Like your father wishes like he did something like that, he admires you for that.
32:01
SPEAKER_00: And Nate is just taken back and she goes, You know, she's like, I hope you don't find this strange.
32:08
SPEAKER_00: Can I see your license?
32:09
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but she does, and then she goes, Wait, I'm sorry, what were you gonna say?
32:15
SPEAKER_01: Oh no, no, yeah, no, because when I think he asks her, you know, what was the arrangement or whatever, and then she then she asks, and he's just like, Okay.
32:27
SPEAKER_01: And then after she sees his license, she hands him a baggie of weed, and she's like, Yeah, this was his month's supply.
32:34
SPEAKER_01: And he's like, My dad didn't smoke.
32:36
SPEAKER_01: She's like, Not in front of you, he didn't.
32:39
SPEAKER_01: Nate is like, Okay, he he just he just doesn't even know what to do with himself, and then it gets worse.
32:47
SPEAKER_00: Then he goes to visit a restaurant owner that um that Nate Sr.
32:53
SPEAKER_00: like buried the restaurant owner's wife like seven years ago, I think he said.
32:58
SPEAKER_00: And he learns that his dad has been well technically renting out their back room.
33:04
SPEAKER_00: They had like a spare room that used to be their storage room.
33:07
SPEAKER_00: Um, but yeah, like the being that Nate Sr.
33:12
SPEAKER_00: like wrote off the expenses for the funeral, he has like a rent-free space in the back of his restaurant.
33:18
SPEAKER_00: And the restaurant owner said that he used to come in, like, you know, like they wouldn't see him for months at a time, and then they would see him every day, and they didn't know what he did back there.
33:28
SPEAKER_02: Right.
33:28
SPEAKER_00: But based off of like all the like not the evidence, but the things that are like left behind that Nate finds, like he sees like a glass with lipstick stains on it, he sees so that's the thing, right?
33:43
SPEAKER_01: I didn't know if that was lipstick.
33:45
SPEAKER_00: Oh, because it looked like it.
33:47
SPEAKER_01: It yeah, but it could like it didn't have color.
33:51
SPEAKER_01: So at first I thought it was lipstick too, but then I was like, could it could it have been lipstick?
33:57
SPEAKER_01: Could it have been like lip like chapstick?
34:01
SPEAKER_01: Could it have just been like a print?
34:04
SPEAKER_00: Like like a woman's yeah lip print.
34:07
SPEAKER_01: That's what I thought on the first watch, and then on the second watch, I was I I second guessed it.
34:12
SPEAKER_01: That's all.
34:14
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I I didn't second guess it because based on the artifacts in the room, Nate starts like thinking about the experiences that like his dad had there, and one of them was like with a prostitute, yeah.
34:31
SPEAKER_00: So that was my way of being like, okay, that's exactly what they meant in the show.
34:38
SPEAKER_00: I think that comes actually later on because the first thing he does is like sit down on the couch and he he starts to smoke the weed and he like passes out, right?
34:48
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't I don't know how much of that was like in his head and yeah, yeah, because he's he's looking around the room, and there's like like you said, the glass is like a unfinished game of solitaire, there's records, you know, it's like a little studio apartment, basically.
35:08
SPEAKER_01: And so Nate is there, and he's like snooping around, he's listening to the music, he's like hallucinating or slash dreaming about his dad, which Nate Sr.
35:22
SPEAKER_01: comes back in this episode, and then of course he fucking naps because Nate just can't pass a nap on a random couch, yeah.
35:30
SPEAKER_00: And like he and he woke up just as his dad was gonna tell him the meaning of life, yeah, and then we see Ruth getting a tiny bit spicy, and by spicy, I mean like you know when kids say spicy water, but they mean seltzer, yeah, yeah.
35:47
SPEAKER_00: That's Ruth.
35:48
SPEAKER_00: So we see Ruth at home thanking Nikolai, who's the flower distributor for the funeral home, um, for sticking with them through like all the Croner bullshit, yeah.
35:57
SPEAKER_00: And Nicolai is very flirty with her, and so we pick back up on that, so don't forget it, but we're gonna drop it for a second because back at Brenda's, Claire notices the book, Charlotte light week day and night, light and dark, like light and dark, light and dark.
36:16
SPEAKER_00: I knew it.
36:16
SPEAKER_00: I was like, the words aren't coming.
36:18
SPEAKER_00: Um they're bringing in the chest, right?
36:20
SPEAKER_00: So, like now, Claire's at Brenda's and she notices the book, and she starts like gushing over, and she was like, My friends and I used to be into this like three summers ago.
36:28
SPEAKER_00: Like, have you read it?
36:30
SPEAKER_00: And while Claire's like freaking the fuck out over the book, and Brenda's just like, Yeah, okay, whatever, okay.
36:36
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's like, What's your favorite part?
36:37
SPEAKER_01: Brenda's like, uh, too many to mention.
36:40
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's true.
36:42
SPEAKER_00: She's like, I love this book, yeah.
36:45
SPEAKER_00: But like then Billy enters and tells Claire that the book is about Brenda, and Claire's just like, oh my god, like as if Claire needed another reason to worship Brenda, yeah, and then she so idolizes her, yeah, she really does.
37:03
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's like, like, this is like meeting Gandhi.
37:06
SPEAKER_01: No, it's not, but okay.
37:08
SPEAKER_01: I mean, maybe it is.
37:09
SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
37:09
SPEAKER_01: I didn't read the book.
37:10
SPEAKER_00: I think Claire just like likes the prim I don't know how to say the word.
37:17
SPEAKER_00: I know the word promiscuous, but I'm trying to put it towards someone else.
37:21
SPEAKER_00: So promiscuity, you know what I'm trying to say?
37:25
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
37:26
SPEAKER_00: So I think she just likes how Brenda is kind of like promiscuous, but also just like very personable, and I think Claire kind of admires that.
37:36
SPEAKER_01: Like well, I in her I had a different take on it.
37:41
SPEAKER_01: I think that she likes like Brenda's more of a free spirit, yeah.
37:47
SPEAKER_01: I think that's like she's a little bit like independent.
37:49
SPEAKER_01: I mean, she's independent, but I can't imagine that she makes ends meet on her own without help.
37:56
SPEAKER_01: But that's conjecture, but but what female role model does Claire have, except for Ruth, who's you know, like this kind of mousy little homemaker, yeah.
38:09
SPEAKER_01: And and here's Brenda, who just does and says whatever she wants, she lives alone, she you know, I can see how that appeal, and she's obviously a lot younger than Ruth.
38:23
SPEAKER_01: So I can see how that would appear, appeal to Claire.
38:28
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, like she's she's looking up to her in that way, and it's like kind of cute, but like you know, Brenda's abusing it, and then at the same time, Billy uh Billy starts like making moves on Claire, and she's bawling for it, like duh, like she's like a high school girl, and she's just happy that somebody's giving her attention, but because yeah, because first Brenda starts shit talking the book and and like kind of insulting people who read it and like it, and so now Claire feels some type of way, but then here comes Billy, and it's all of a sudden like, oh wait, the low, and then we're coming back up, yeah.
39:16
SPEAKER_01: Because even though he's like kind of a dick at first, he's he's he took Brenda's beer, he gives her shit for drinking, and then takes the beer and drinks it, so it's like oh my god, I didn't notice that, and then he drove Claire home.
39:29
SPEAKER_00: What the fuck?
39:29
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, it was one beer, and and him and Claire shared it.
39:33
SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, but like so it's like for well, first of all, she's 16, but you know, like he's all flirty with her, and then as soon as he's like, Oh, uh, I'm gonna take a shower and I'll drive you home.
39:48
SPEAKER_01: And Claire's excited about that idea, and Brenda's like, Oh no, no, it's okay, I'll do it.
39:52
SPEAKER_01: And he's like, No, no, it's okay, I got it.
39:54
SPEAKER_01: And you see, Brenda is not happy with that.
39:58
SPEAKER_00: And um he drives her home, and they're making out in the car, and Claire's like, I'm not that type of girl, like, oh, it was so cringy.
40:09
SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
40:10
SPEAKER_00: Like, you could see it all over Billy's face, what kind of person he is.
40:15
SPEAKER_01: And I I I thought it was funny, funny, like you're so stupid, funny.
40:20
SPEAKER_01: And she's like, What did she say?
40:24
SPEAKER_01: She says something because he's like, Well, I'm not that kind of guy, and she's like, Do you mean it?
40:29
SPEAKER_01: Because, like, if you're lying, I'll kill you, I'll kick your ass.
40:32
SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, and you can just like like you could see what's going on behind like his eyes, like in his head, you know what I mean?
40:41
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's just like, Oh, okay, little girl, sure.
40:44
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know.
40:47
SPEAKER_00: I feel like I feel like he has some weird shit going on.
40:50
SPEAKER_00: I don't exactly remember too, like his yeah, background with the with the ladies, but I feel like if it gets revealed later on that he has assaulted many women, it would be easily believable.
41:06
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and if that happens, I'm sorry that I didn't remember that I saw that, but I truly don't, I truly don't remember.
41:13
SPEAKER_00: But he's just like he's off-putting in that one.
41:17
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so anyway, back at the community event, Tracy's still all up on David, despite all the hints that he's dropping.
41:25
SPEAKER_00: He even tells her flat out he's not interested, and then she bitches that he doesn't even have to be like that he doesn't have to be mean about it.
41:34
SPEAKER_00: But like he's been trying to tell her over and over and over that he's not interested.
41:38
SPEAKER_00: So, like, first off, clearly he had to be nasty to her for her to get it, and then she went off on him, like she was just saying, like, you know, and he's like, Why don't you just uh go to a bar and pick up somebody and sleep?
41:53
SPEAKER_01: And he wasn't even mean about it.
41:55
SPEAKER_01: That's the whole thing.
41:56
SPEAKER_01: He's like, What will it take?
41:59
SPEAKER_01: I'm not interested, yeah.
42:01
SPEAKER_00: And then she's like, But what if, like, um Cindy Crawford, yeah, comes to her door naked and wants to like have sex with you, and he's like, Then I just tell her now.
42:13
SPEAKER_01: You should have asked him what would happen if I just elbow came to his door.
42:18
SPEAKER_01: We know what the answer will be.
42:20
SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, uh but yeah, but he tells her he's because she's like, Oh, I miss the regular sex, and is it so wrong to just want a human connection?
42:31
SPEAKER_01: And he's like, Do us all a favor, go to a bar and pick somebody up, yeah.
42:36
SPEAKER_00: But then he takes his own advice, like he literally like drives past like a gay bar, and like you can clearly tell because men are walking into and out, they're like looking at him, staring at him as they make out with each other, yeah.
42:50
SPEAKER_00: But then like the scene kind of ends there, which kind of confused me for a second because then I feel like you see David somewhere else before you see him.
43:00
SPEAKER_01: You okay, you see him go home, and he's like working on records or whatever for the business, and then after he sends Rico home, then he goes back out.
43:16
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, it's like the little in-between.
43:19
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's literally what happens next.
43:21
SPEAKER_00: Like Rico has the pleasure of meeting Mr.
43:23
SPEAKER_00: Jones, and Mr.
43:24
SPEAKER_00: Jones has the pleasure of shitting on Rico's work, and like Rico was then like in the basement working on um Hattie, and then oh no, no, no, on somebody else.
43:34
SPEAKER_00: I'm like a new client.
43:35
SPEAKER_00: He was like, I just have to do this and this, and then I'm all done.
43:37
SPEAKER_01: And then I thought he was yeah, because Hattie was already done.
43:41
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he was talking to him.
43:43
SPEAKER_00: I thought he was talking to himself, and then you see like David in the background, he's like, Okay, and then you can go home.
43:48
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so before we get to David's night out, Nate shows Brenda the room, and he thinks it's sad, but she's finding it really fascinating.
44:00
SPEAKER_00: And Lisa's surprised that they didn't fuck in there.
44:06
SPEAKER_01: Like, this is like what the first episode where they're not like pawing at each other and all over the place, and like it's a random room and a dingy couch.
44:17
SPEAKER_01: I thought that was their thing.
44:19
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it seemed like it, but this is relational growth, you know.
44:23
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I guess.
44:25
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
44:25
SPEAKER_00: So, you know, we see some growth in this episode.
44:28
SPEAKER_00: And back at home, Ruth checks on Mr.
44:31
SPEAKER_00: Jones while Nikolai brings in the flowers.
44:33
SPEAKER_00: Nikolai like clearly flirts right in front of like Mr.
44:36
SPEAKER_00: Jones to Ruth.
44:37
SPEAKER_00: And Ruth pulls him aside and says, like, you can't be doing that around like the customers.
44:41
SPEAKER_00: Like, I already complimented you for sticking with us, but like we may have to drop you if you're still doing this.
44:46
SPEAKER_00: And he's like, Doing what?
44:47
SPEAKER_00: And she's like, having the look in your eye.
44:49
SPEAKER_00: And he's like, What look?
44:50
SPEAKER_00: And she's like, the sex look.
44:51
SPEAKER_00: And she clearly like says it.
44:54
SPEAKER_00: And then he says something to her.
44:56
SPEAKER_00: And I forgot what it was, but she literally fucking slaps him in the face.
45:00
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she uses that, like that pot strength, the strength from holding the pot in the kitchen.
45:06
SPEAKER_00: And she uses those muscles to slap him in the face.
45:09
SPEAKER_00: And then she does one of those things where she likes I love when they do this in shows, where they have somebody slap someone in the face and then they hold their hand to their mouth, like, oh what did I just do?
45:20
SPEAKER_00: And then he holds his cheek, like, did that really happen?
45:25
SPEAKER_00: That shit's so dumb.
45:26
SPEAKER_00: But they did that.
45:28
SPEAKER_00: It was just really like funny to see that like cliche reaction from both of them.
45:33
SPEAKER_00: And um, and then Mr.
45:37
SPEAKER_00: Jones, like in the back, is like, I could tell you're the lady in charge because you're wearing red.
45:42
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
45:43
SPEAKER_00: And she's like, This was the only thing clean.
45:45
SPEAKER_00: And he's like, you know what I'm trying to say.
45:47
SPEAKER_00: He's like, I'm deaf and blind.
45:49
SPEAKER_00: And he's literally across the room.
45:52
SPEAKER_01: He's like, the lady, the lady means business when she wears red or something like that.
45:58
SPEAKER_01: And he's like, I'm blind and deaf, and I can see it.
46:02
SPEAKER_00: Tuney to be like, you need to sleep with someone.
46:05
SPEAKER_00: He says something like that.
46:06
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
46:07
SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
46:08
SPEAKER_01: But I have notes about the color red.
46:11
SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
46:12
SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
46:13
SPEAKER_00: Do you want to pick it up now or later?
46:14
SPEAKER_01: No, later.
46:15
SPEAKER_01: Later.
46:15
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
46:16
SPEAKER_00: Ooh, I want to know your connection to that.
46:19
SPEAKER_00: So, anyway, back in the car.
46:21
SPEAKER_00: Oh, never mind.
46:22
SPEAKER_00: Back to Claire and Billy.
46:23
SPEAKER_00: I don't know why I thought they were in the car already.
46:25
SPEAKER_00: Um, so we see Claire like heading out of school, and Billy's taking candid photos of her, which is like kind of creepy, but kind of cute.
46:32
SPEAKER_01: And um, and so like he's it's it is a little bit creepy, but she sees him, so it's he's it's not like you know, he's secretly doing this, like she sees him, so it's cute.
46:43
SPEAKER_01: And she smiles, she thinks it's cute, so it's okay.
46:46
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, but it was like I don't know, I'm remembering stuff from like future episodes.
46:52
SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, no, yeah, it's just kind of impacting the way I feel about things.
46:56
SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna like keep this very brief and just literally read what you okay.
47:00
SPEAKER_00: Don't yeah, that no opinions then, yeah, yeah.
47:03
SPEAKER_00: So um he drives her home and then he goes into the house taking more pictures of seemingly random things.
47:09
SPEAKER_00: Uh Claire mentions that Nate may be in love with Brenda and Billy gets weird about it.
47:14
SPEAKER_00: But before he does that, he sets up like his Polaroid camera to take a photo of like him and Claire sitting on the couch in like their their sunroom or something.
47:22
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and like right before the camera flashes, he like pulls her in to make out and grabs her boob.
47:27
SPEAKER_00: He's like something to remember me by.
47:29
SPEAKER_00: That should be noted, okay, because we we gotta pick that up at a different time.
47:33
SPEAKER_00: Okay.
47:34
SPEAKER_00: That night after David like sends Rika home and he goes back out, he picks up a one-night stand, right?
47:41
SPEAKER_00: Finally, David's getting the D.
47:43
SPEAKER_00: And David, um, he says his name is Jim.
47:46
SPEAKER_00: He says his name's not David, he said his name is Jim, and he's like a lawyer from Boston, right?
47:50
SPEAKER_00: And then, like, the guy that he picks up is like, Oh, are you in the industry or blah blah blah?
47:56
SPEAKER_00: And like, and you could tell David's like he wants to be there mentally, but he's not there because apparently, like you could tell they were like having a conversation or something before yeah, he was so disengaged.
48:08
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he wasn't remembering anything about him, the guy that he picked up, like what he did for work or anything like that.
48:14
SPEAKER_00: And right, obviously, like you could tell that was part of their conversation, excuse me.
48:19
SPEAKER_00: I burped.
48:21
SPEAKER_01: So and here's here's my question, right?
48:24
SPEAKER_01: Because in that scene, eventually they they sit on the couch, and the other guy, I don't remember his name, like goes to go down on him, and but you don't uh obviously you don't see it, but but then the scene cuts out, and the next thing you see is David in the car.
48:41
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I wonder what happened.
48:42
SPEAKER_00: Like, if right, like did he go through with it?
48:45
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know.
48:46
SPEAKER_00: I don't remember either, so it's not like I'm holding anything back.
48:50
SPEAKER_00: The next day we see Ruth apologize to Nikolai for slapping him, which I think like wasn't really on call for, but whatever.
48:57
SPEAKER_01: And then the slap or the apology, the apology.
49:01
SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was being like he's being a little bit aggressive, yeah.
49:05
SPEAKER_00: But she didn't have to go on and slap him, but that kind of got the message across, so but also the but I like that she's a little bit unpredictable like that, yeah.
49:15
SPEAKER_00: But also just like the random fucking abuse towards your workers isn't like yeah, he's he probably likes it.
49:23
SPEAKER_00: Not concept.
49:24
SPEAKER_00: What's oh my god, my words, my words, context.
49:27
SPEAKER_00: Look at it in that context, yeah.
49:30
SPEAKER_00: Anyway, they're going through this whole thing like on the porch outside, and then they start kissing, and fucking people arrive for the viewing of Hattie, and they're like, Is this the viewing?
49:42
SPEAKER_00: This way, please, right through here.
49:44
SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, and now back to Claire's story, which I kind of like how Claire's story ends, but anyway, we're not there yet.
49:52
SPEAKER_00: Um at school, Claire like calls Billy off the payphone at school, right?
49:55
SPEAKER_00: It was the payphone.
49:56
SPEAKER_01: I don't remember, I thought it was her phone, but I don't remember now.
50:00
SPEAKER_01: But either way, she calls him.
50:02
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm gonna make it the payphone because I love that shit.
50:05
SPEAKER_00: It's like it's just so cute to say.
50:07
SPEAKER_00: But Claire calls Billy, but he's like, um, who's this?
50:11
SPEAKER_00: New phone, yeah.
50:12
SPEAKER_01: He's basically like new phone, who this, but did she?
50:15
SPEAKER_01: He's like Claire Who, which was so shitty, and she's just like, What the fuck?
50:20
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's like, You're 16.
50:22
SPEAKER_01: What do you think I am?
50:24
SPEAKER_01: She's like, Oh, I just want to see if you wanted to hang out today.
50:28
SPEAKER_00: But he basically, yeah, go ahead.
50:31
SPEAKER_00: But Billy was like saying that in like ear distance of Brenda.
50:36
SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, because Brenda's you see, Brenda, Billy looks like she just woke him up, like if he's sleeping on a cot in Brenda's living room, and you see her behind not that far away, but you know she hears everything.
50:54
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, but she was definitely like in ear range, and like they showed her like in the the forefront, backfront, forefront, in like the background, in the background, whatever the technical word is, but like you could see like she was clearly there, and he was like saying these things and like stressing, like you're 16, Claire, like right on the phone saying these things, and that's why Brenda would like put pieces together, like oh, okay, like you know, he's not messing around with my boyfriend's little sister, but anyway, yeah, and then he just like hangs up the phone and throws it, and Claire's just kind of like, What the fuck just happened?
51:34
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's kind of confusing.
51:36
SPEAKER_00: Like, I feel bad for Claire in that moment.
51:38
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, another another guy who she this is this is now the third guy that she gets a little bit close.
51:47
SPEAKER_01: No, the third guy, because it's Gabe, and then like he told the whole school about the toe sucking, and then there was the Gabe look-alike at the funeral that she she oh you're right.
51:58
SPEAKER_01: I mean, I know like they didn't girl, yeah.
52:00
SPEAKER_01: I know they didn't like go out or anything, but she was like kind of into him.
52:04
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they were smoking in the basement, like in the yeah, yeah, yeah, and then and now it's Billy, and he's just like he was like, Oh, you know, like yet all of a sudden it's like yesterday it was this was fun, we should do it again, and I'm not like that, and today it's like fuck you play, basically.
52:23
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, so Nate now brings David to Nate Singer's room.
52:29
SPEAKER_00: We're just calling it the room at this point.
52:31
SPEAKER_00: We all understand that.
52:32
SPEAKER_00: David doesn't care about the room at all, which is strange because it really gives like an insight to who their father was, and David's not interested, he's just like think about the financial terms of it like we need to clean this place off before they start charging us for rent.
52:48
SPEAKER_00: Like, that was his he's so detached, yeah.
52:51
SPEAKER_00: He's really cold in that sense, and so I mean, I would have worried about that too, but first I would have been like, cool, like let's snoop.
53:00
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like how do you not want to go through things or lift up these cushions?
53:04
SPEAKER_00: Like, you never know what you're gonna find, and it's true.
53:08
SPEAKER_00: So, in that sense, so Nate's packing up for you know, as David said, they get charged rent, and as Nate's packing everything up, he comes across a photo album, and in the photo album, he sees like a bunch of family photos from one of the phone.
53:23
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so sweet, and he finds an envelope, and in the envelope, he finds like two sexy photos of Ruth from when she was younger.
53:32
SPEAKER_02: She's gonna have it.
53:36
SPEAKER_00: I don't know why little came to mind, and I was like, that's gross, yeah, yeah, just a little, yeah, but like from when they were like first married or whatever, like a little after.
53:46
SPEAKER_00: And so Nate comes home and then gives those photos to Ruth and says he found them in like in the office, yeah.
53:54
SPEAKER_01: He doesn't because he mentions to David that he he wants to show her, and David's like, so you're not gonna be happy until the whole family's in therapy, and I mean he's right, like what would he gain by showing her?
54:12
SPEAKER_00: It's true, although he may think that she can gain something from it, but roots kind of like getting to a better place, and I think they all see that, and so why just like send her down spiraling?
54:27
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but Ruth is so cute when he shows her that it's it was kind of a moment where you just have no idea how she was gonna react, and she just looks at those pictures with such nostalgia, and she explains like when and how they were taken, and then she's like, Your grandfather was an unhappy man, and we had no privacy because we were living here, so we went to a hotel.
54:52
SPEAKER_01: She's like, We made love like maniacs, and what it was like Ruth, who are you?
54:58
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're telling stories.
55:01
SPEAKER_00: You could see that Nate was like really taken aback by that response, too.
55:06
SPEAKER_00: I like that Ruth had like that not Ruthie type moment.
55:11
SPEAKER_01: I think that she saw those pictures and it just inspired something because she makes that comment of uh like how how fast time flies or how much they change or something like that.
55:27
SPEAKER_01: And I I think that that's the catalyst for what she does next, but we're not there yet.
55:34
SPEAKER_00: No, no, we're not, and um, besides their nice exchange, uh Nate then goes downstairs to wake up Mr.
55:42
SPEAKER_00: Jones because he's trying to get him ready for like the service, and he's like sitting on a chair next to his wife's coffin, and we think he's sleeping.
55:53
SPEAKER_00: Nate thinks he's sleeping, but it turns out he wasn't sleeping.
55:56
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Mr.
55:57
SPEAKER_00: Jones, yeah, Mr.
55:59
SPEAKER_00: Jones.
56:00
SPEAKER_01: With his bitch in heaven, good thing he got that double plot.
56:03
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking in that moment, too.
56:07
SPEAKER_00: I was like, This is so sad, he died of a broken heart, but like he set up his own arrangement, so you know um, and so David.
56:16
SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm sorry.
56:16
SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, wait.
56:18
SPEAKER_01: We we missed uh Brenda and Claire.
56:21
SPEAKER_01: Oh, I'm so sorry.
56:22
SPEAKER_01: No, it's okay.
56:24
SPEAKER_01: So Brenda meets Claire at school, and she tries to like somewhat explain Billy's behavior, and she also tells Claire that she pities the woman that he ends up with, and she asks Claire if they slept together, and Claire tells her no, and she's like, Oh, good, you dodged a bullet.
56:42
SPEAKER_01: I don't know, I have thoughts about that, but by the end of the episode, we see this bond start to develop between them because you just you just get flashing scenes of what people are doing, and so when it flashes to them, you see them sitting outside Brenda's house, apartment, whatever, and they're just like smoking a joint together, they're giggly, and it's nice, it's it's almost like Claire finally got what she wanted, you know.
57:14
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I like David, like yeah, yeah.
57:18
SPEAKER_01: David, David's little flash is I guess I don't know, it looked like he was cleaning up after another event or something, and he sees a cop car drive down the street, and you see that there's a black officer in in the front seat, but you can't see his face because he's turned, and so you think it's Keith, and David's just staring, and then when the cop turns to face, you realize it's not, but you see David stare, and it's like reminding us that he misses Keith.
57:47
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and then we get to miss Ruth.
57:51
SPEAKER_00: Yes, we do, and you see her go to somebody's door and knock on it, and it's nighttime, yeah, and cue the rain because somehow these moments only happen in the rain, yeah.
58:03
SPEAKER_00: And it's true though, and she knocks on his door and he opens up the door and it's Hiram, and they share a kiss, and it's really cute.
58:11
SPEAKER_01: It's such a sweet moment, you know.
58:14
SPEAKER_01: She just stands there, and he just like they just look at each other, and it's you could tell it was just what they both wanted and needed, yeah, at least in that moment.
58:27
SPEAKER_01: So yeah, but that's it, and then that's how the episode ends on that note.
58:32
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, fades the white.
58:34
SPEAKER_01: So notes about this episode we get Nate Sr.
58:41
SPEAKER_01: back not a lot, but we get him back in this episode when he's talking to Nate in the room, and this is I think the first episode that we don't get to see the dead person before they die, right?
58:55
SPEAKER_00: Which because you think like what person who passed away are we focusing on?
59:01
SPEAKER_00: Oh, good point.
59:03
SPEAKER_00: But sure, we got we got two different dead people in this episode, too.
59:06
SPEAKER_00: That's another point.
59:08
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and the dead person didn't talk to David.
59:13
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, usually they you know he hallucinates them.
59:17
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're right.
59:19
SPEAKER_01: Wow, David didn't have any of that.
59:22
SPEAKER_00: Oh, I see in your notes, the color red.
59:26
SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
59:27
SPEAKER_00: Do you want to talk about that?
59:28
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so every woman in this episode at one time or another has worn red or shades of pink, so because Ruth wears the red shirt and they comment on it, and then at the end of the episode, we see her wearing a pink shirt when she's talking to Nate about the picture.
59:48
SPEAKER_01: I don't know what she's wearing at the end because she has her coat on, but it could be that pink shirt.
59:54
SPEAKER_01: Brenda is practically wearing red every time we see her.
59:58
SPEAKER_01: Claire wears red the first time we see her, it's in her pajama, and even the funeral whore had like a shade of like a pink um outfit on when she's trying to like harass David.
1:00:13
SPEAKER_01: That's clearly intentional.
1:00:15
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it has to be because and then we have Mr.
1:00:17
SPEAKER_01: Jones' comment about the lady means business when you wear red.
1:00:22
SPEAKER_01: I don't know, I just thought that that was kind of funny that all the women took turns wearing red, none of the men, though, yeah.
1:00:31
SPEAKER_01: I mean, the closest we got was like brown, but but yeah, Mr.
1:00:38
SPEAKER_01: Jones interacted with all the members of the Fisher family, plus Brenda and Rico, which I thought really spread his love around there, yeah, yeah, and so then the other thing that I noticed is that the one of the underlying things was Nate's internal struggle to have senior proud of him for going off on his own versus coming back and staying and running the business, but then also at one point in his hallucination, it was like, Well, when are you gonna like not care?
1:01:11
SPEAKER_01: So it's like care versus don't care, stay versus go.
1:01:16
SPEAKER_01: And Nate Nate seems like he just is realizing how lost he is and how much his father's approval actually meant to him.
1:01:27
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like maybe like it's something he never really thought of before.
1:01:31
SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
1:01:31
SPEAKER_00: Well, it was probably brought to his attention by the weed lady, right?
1:01:35
SPEAKER_01: And she, I think I think that was one of the first solid moments where he realized just how little he knew because she was like, Oh, he was so funny, he was a kook, he smokes weed, and and Nate's just like I didn't know any of this stuff.
1:01:51
SPEAKER_01: And then the fact that he has this whole first of all, that he had this whole way of doing business by bartering is news.
1:02:00
SPEAKER_01: The fact that he smoked and was a kook and was funny is news, and then the fact that he had this whole other room, this whole other uh living space is huge.
1:02:13
SPEAKER_01: So I think that I think that that would disturb anybody, but then given the dynamics of the family and how distant and kind of emotionally unavailable they all are with each other, I think it hits harder.
1:02:29
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I think your last point here is interesting.
1:02:34
SPEAKER_01: I wrote the episode is called The Room, so I'm sure it refers to Senior's room, but could it also be a nod to the room Brenda was in in the flashbacks during her right?
1:02:47
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we see flashbacks of her as a kid with like a therapist or whatever, and so obviously, like they're they're in a room recording, yeah, and we don't like talk much about it.
1:03:00
SPEAKER_01: I mean, we don't really see much.
1:03:01
SPEAKER_01: Brenda makes comments that the therapist raped her doll, and then in another flashback, Brenda just barks, yeah, because Claire was referencing it, yeah.
1:03:14
SPEAKER_01: But I don't know, I I didn't like I know how sometimes shows like to do like a double entendre.
1:03:22
SPEAKER_01: Did I say that right for shows?
1:03:24
SPEAKER_01: But so no, I was just thinking about that.
1:03:27
SPEAKER_00: No, I think that's a really good point you make up because I was reading that while you were talking about like the internal struggle that Nate has, and I'm like, shit, Lisa, you read into it, but I like that you did that because I wouldn't have thought of that at all.
1:03:45
SPEAKER_00: Like that.
1:03:45
SPEAKER_01: I know, I mean, I know it's a stretch, but I I was I was trying to look for more than the obvious connection to the title, and that was the only thing that I could come up with because I I this is the second episode already where we have references to her book, so I didn't I didn't know if it was something that's gonna be important or not.
1:04:09
SPEAKER_01: Yeah, is there anything else that you want to add?
1:04:15
SPEAKER_01: I'm just really excited for the episodes to come.
1:04:18
SPEAKER_01: So the next episode is called Brotherhood, Brotherhood, yeah, or the Brotherhood, I don't I don't remember, but one or the other.
1:04:27
SPEAKER_01: However, we Brittany and I did a guest spot on another podcast.
1:04:35
SPEAKER_01: It's called Conversations with Robbie Sherman, and we talked about the way old movie Gay Paris, which was actually one of my childhood favorite freaking movies, and it was it was a fucking trip watching that as an adult and seeing like so weird kitty trafficking and brothels.
1:05:01
SPEAKER_00: Uh it was a lot for a child to take in, and you just took it in with like open arms, you're like, Yeah, well, yeah, because like who the fuck knows about like sex trafficking and shit, you know, when you're a kid, you're like, Oh, look, it's got songs.
1:05:15
SPEAKER_00: This is an animated cat film, by the way, guys.
1:05:18
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but yeah, so in reference.
1:05:21
SPEAKER_01: So, um, I'm not sure what date he's releasing it, but it'll be released soon.
1:05:27
SPEAKER_01: So you could find him on Twitter, Conversations with Robbie Sherman.
1:05:30
SPEAKER_01: I don't know if that's his actual Twitter handle, but but it's there.
1:05:34
