- 2:26Speaker 3: in the news I want to get to and I
- 2:29Speaker 3: will get to that a little bit later on. Well,
- 2:30Speaker 3: the announcement came down late last week of a new
- 2:33Speaker 3: state senator for this area, the vacancy coming about following
- 2:37Speaker 3: the resignation of Mark Hunt, who had to resign since
- 2:39Speaker 3: he was elected state auditor back in the November election.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Kevin Bartlett was chosen by Governor Morrisy to fill the role,
- 2:46Speaker 3: and he joins us this morning.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Senator, good morning, good morning, day, good to be with
- 2:49Speaker 4: you to day.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Are you a senator now? Or I mean because official
- 2:53Speaker 3: swearing in is not till Wednesday.
- 2:54Speaker 4: That's correct. I can't answer that question. I'm hearing it
- 2:58Speaker 4: a lot. I'm still getting used to that. But I'm
- 3:00Speaker 4: just Kevin.
- 3:00Speaker 3: It would be great, Kevin, and I mean senator elect.
- 3:04Speaker 3: I don't think because.
- 3:05Speaker 4: William an election point is senator appointee perhaps, how Abut we.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Just go with Kevin. I like it all right? All right,
- 3:10Speaker 3: So tell us about Kevin Bartlett. Give us a little biof.
- 3:14Speaker 6: I'm local from here in the Charleston area. Grew up
- 3:16Speaker 6: in here in the Kanaal Valley. My parents, both of
- 3:19Speaker 6: them are multi generational West Virginians, and I have lived
- 3:23Speaker 6: and served in the Cistonville community northern Kanaha County since
- 3:27Speaker 6: I was a kid. My vocation is I'm the pastor
- 3:31Speaker 6: of Marinatha Baptist Church on the north side of Charleston,
- 3:34Speaker 6: in the Cistonville community. I'm really blessed I get to
- 3:38Speaker 6: serve as pastor of the church I grew up in.
- 3:40Speaker 6: My dad started the church in nineteen sixty nine. After
- 3:43Speaker 6: Bible College in Tennessee, I came home and I was
- 3:46Speaker 6: Dad's assistant pastor for twenty four years. He retired and
- 3:50Speaker 6: I became the senior sixteen years ago. So I've been
- 3:53Speaker 6: in one place to serve for forty years. So I'm
- 3:58Speaker 6: West Virginians through and through it, and glad the Lord
- 4:01Speaker 6: lets me live here and serve here. Have wonderful people
- 4:03Speaker 6: in my church. I got engaged in politics by as
- 4:07Speaker 6: a pastor going to d C on an annual trip
- 4:10Speaker 6: to pray with and minister to our representatives there. Started
- 4:15Speaker 6: doing the same kind of thing with other pastors here
- 4:17Speaker 6: in Charleston at the state level, and just got more
- 4:20Speaker 6: and more engaged. And then my delegate, Delegate Malcolm Sharon
- 4:26Speaker 6: Malcolm passed away suddenly and I was appointed by Governor
- 4:30Speaker 6: Justice to fill out the remainder of her term. There
- 4:32Speaker 6: was a year left on that that was the year
- 4:35Speaker 6: leading into COVID, and so I've just been looking and
- 4:38Speaker 6: praying about the opportunity to step back into politics.
- 4:42Speaker 4: I enjoy it.
- 4:42Speaker 6: I see it as an extension of my pastoral ministry.
- 4:45Speaker 6: And this is the door that the Lord opened, and
- 4:47Speaker 6: only he could have opened it, and I'm thankful to
- 4:50Speaker 6: be in this position of service.
- 4:53Speaker 3: What is it about politics that interest you? I mean,
- 4:57Speaker 3: because there's a lot of folks that like it from
- 4:59Speaker 3: the outside, But did you actually want to get in
- 5:01Speaker 3: and do stuff?
- 5:03Speaker 4: What is it?
- 5:03Speaker 3: What's the appeal for you?
- 5:04Speaker 6: Well, there isn't There is an appeal that you can
- 5:06Speaker 6: actually accomplish things and get things done. And in the legislature,
- 5:11Speaker 6: in the House your one voice of one hundred. In
- 5:13Speaker 6: the Senate you're one voice of thirty four. But those
- 5:16Speaker 6: voices can have an impact and affect the lives of
- 5:20Speaker 6: West Virginians. You know, the Bible says righteousness exalteth the nation,
- 5:25Speaker 6: sent as or approach to any people. Well, how does
- 5:26Speaker 6: righteousness good things, write proper things, How does that get exalted? Well,
- 5:30Speaker 6: in our form of government, it's done through the legislative process.
- 5:35Speaker 6: And so if we want to have good if we
- 5:38Speaker 6: want to have good legislative process, you've got to have
- 5:40Speaker 6: good legislators there who know, who understand what good things are,
- 5:44Speaker 6: righteousness is. And I enjoy the process of working out
- 5:48Speaker 6: the puzzle of things. I enjoy the process of the
- 5:51Speaker 6: relationships with other servants and folks in government. Again, it's
- 5:56Speaker 6: it's just an extension of helping people. My dad taught
- 5:59Speaker 6: me in Menat as a pastor. We're in the people
- 6:01Speaker 6: business and This is really just another avenue.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Of being in the people business.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Talking again with I guess soon to be Senator Keith
- 6:10Speaker 3: ken soon to be Senator Kevin Bartlett this morning, but
- 6:13Speaker 3: Dave Island showing five at ey Line Bright too, part
- 6:15Speaker 3: by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston dirty Birds. Before
- 6:18Speaker 3: you know it, it'll be time to play ball at
- 6:20Speaker 3: Gomart Ballpark. Check out the twenty twenty five dirty Birds schedule,
- 6:22Speaker 3: dirty Birds merchandise in more at dirty birds baseball dot com.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Now you're going to be serving in the eighth district.
- 6:28Speaker 3: That's correct, Okay, And this is the district As I
- 6:30Speaker 3: said that Mark Hunt held that position, but he was
- 6:33Speaker 3: elected to state auditor. What area is the eighth I mean,
- 6:35Speaker 3: it's a just talking about.
- 6:37Speaker 6: It's an unusual district. It is all of Calhoun, excuse me,
- 6:42Speaker 6: all of Roan and all of Clay, not Calhoun, all
- 6:45Speaker 6: of Clay, all of Rome, a little bit of work,
- 6:48Speaker 6: a slice of Jackson, a slice on the northern side
- 6:51Speaker 6: of Canaw. It goes down to a little bit of
- 6:53Speaker 6: western Putnam, and then a finger comes up the central
- 6:56Speaker 6: part of the Kanaw County kind of dunbar right up
- 7:01Speaker 6: into downtown Charleston. It's an odd drawing on the delegate
- 7:06Speaker 6: Ora excuse the senator district maps.
- 7:08Speaker 3: And one of the things I think that's interesting about
- 7:10Speaker 3: this district is, as you said, it takes in a
- 7:14Speaker 3: lot of ground and some of the areas, some of
- 7:17Speaker 3: the things that are of concern to one particular area
- 7:20Speaker 3: may not be as much to the other area.
- 7:24Speaker 6: Yes, so you got to kind of balance that out.
- 7:26Speaker 6: That's a real challenge for whoever is serving in a
- 7:29Speaker 6: district like that. And this may be I've been looking
- 7:31Speaker 6: at the maps, this may be the most extreme example
- 7:34Speaker 6: of that the eighth And in my interview process with
- 7:38Speaker 6: the committee that was part of the selection that referred
- 7:42Speaker 6: Polks to the governor for the appointment, that was asked
- 7:45Speaker 6: about you know, you have rural counties represented, and you
- 7:48Speaker 6: have Charleston represented. And I believe I'm in a good
- 7:52Speaker 6: spot there that I'm close to Charleston, but I live
- 7:56Speaker 6: in I live probably a quarter mile as the crow
- 7:58Speaker 6: flies from Jackson County, and my wife and I do
- 8:01Speaker 6: a lot of business in Jackson County. I hunt and
- 8:03Speaker 6: fish and in those those central counties. But it will
- 8:08Speaker 6: be a task that I will embrace to get to
- 8:10Speaker 6: know the needs of the rural counties in parallel need
- 8:15Speaker 6: assessment with the Charleston area.
- 8:18Speaker 3: You mentioned that you were appointed to the House previously.
- 8:23Speaker 3: What did you learn in the in the House that
- 8:26Speaker 3: you think is going to serve you in the Senate.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Because you said it's a numbers game. You're one of
- 8:29Speaker 3: one hundred you know, in the House, a little bit
- 8:31Speaker 3: less actually a lot less than the Senate. So what
- 8:34Speaker 3: did you look back on those time and think, well,
- 8:36Speaker 3: maybe I'll do this differently, or I'll do this the same.
- 8:39Speaker 6: Yes, Well, for one thing, you have to engage with
- 8:43Speaker 6: with other delegates and be engaging with other Senators. There's
- 8:47Speaker 6: partnerships on getting anything done. One person can't get anything done,
- 8:52Speaker 6: I believe. I believe Senator Mansion had expressed frustration from
- 8:56Speaker 6: going from executive to legislative service that very thing that
- 9:01Speaker 6: he wasn't just the chief officer that could get things done.
- 9:03Speaker 6: So collaborative and cooperative efforts with other servants, that's a key.
- 9:08Speaker 6: I learned that really quick when I arrived at the House,
- 9:11Speaker 6: and I want to bring that to the Senate as well.
- 9:14Speaker 3: It's big in your agenda. The session starts next week.
- 9:16Speaker 3: The governor will be given his state of the his
- 9:19Speaker 3: state of the state next week. What are you looking
- 9:23Speaker 3: ahead to?
- 9:24Speaker 6: Well, I appreciate the bullet list that the governor put
- 9:27Speaker 6: out the first couple of days after he was sworn
- 9:29Speaker 6: in some big initiative points, and I agree with every
- 9:33Speaker 6: one of them. And I really appreciate the fact that
- 9:36Speaker 6: what he said in motion as governor were the very
- 9:39Speaker 6: things that he ran on all those months in the campaign.
- 9:41Speaker 6: I appreciate. I appreciate that. So I'm on board with
- 9:45Speaker 6: all of those points. In general. Politically, I'm pro life.
- 9:50Speaker 6: That's that's a big important issue for me. Pro Second Amendment,
- 9:54Speaker 6: Religious freedom issues are important concern I'm very concerned that
- 10:00Speaker 6: there is an element in the legislature that is looking
- 10:04Speaker 6: to make recreational marijuana legal in West Virginia. I think
- 10:07Speaker 6: that's a terrible mistake. So I think it will harm
- 10:11Speaker 6: our young people, don't. I think it will put in
- 10:15Speaker 6: in the normality even more malaise and just non accomplishment
- 10:23Speaker 6: among young people. So I just and I've watched what's
- 10:28Speaker 6: happened somewhat in Colorado and other states. I don't I
- 10:31Speaker 6: don't see any state where they say, oh man, this
- 10:33Speaker 6: was one of the best things we ever did, so
- 10:37Speaker 6: that that's been there for a long time. I want
- 10:38Speaker 6: to try to hold the line with others on that
- 10:42Speaker 6: there is a great need in our foster care structure.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Uh.
- 10:47Speaker 6: And I'm so appreciative and I applaud those who are
- 10:50Speaker 6: foster parents and those who are working in the structure.
- 10:53Speaker 6: But the structure needs needs a lot of help, and frankly,
- 10:57Speaker 6: it probably needs a lot of funding. And we've got
- 10:59Speaker 6: to get more people trained. We've got to streamline the
- 11:01Speaker 6: process to get more foster parents online ready to receive
- 11:05Speaker 6: children in crisis. That's an issue that I that I
- 11:08Speaker 6: have a great interest in bringing some good help to bear.
- 11:12Speaker 3: Speaking of of budgets and money, and there seems to
- 11:15Speaker 3: be some sort of a disconnect between the previous administration
- 11:20Speaker 3: and then what Governor Morrissey has come in, and there's
- 11:22Speaker 3: going to have to one way or the other. I
- 11:23Speaker 3: think most people would believe there were there's going to
- 11:25Speaker 3: have to be some some some.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Belt tightening a little bit.
- 11:28Speaker 6: Kevin, Well, no doubt, government always needs to be belt tightening.
- 11:33Speaker 6: And as you said, I'm the senator appointee pending, so
- 11:37Speaker 6: I haven't I haven't had opportunity to look at numbers.
- 11:40Speaker 6: But yes, the fact that the previous Governor Justice had
- 11:44Speaker 6: one perspective on where we are financially and now Governor
- 11:47Speaker 6: Morrisey has a different perspective. Uh, there's obviously going to
- 11:50Speaker 6: have to be some work done. One thing we don't
- 11:52Speaker 6: need to do is tax the people of West Virginia
- 11:54Speaker 6: any harder. So I'm sure that the governor will lead us,
- 11:59Speaker 6: and the Senate and the House will come right alongside
- 12:02Speaker 6: it with some good ideas as well to get our
- 12:05Speaker 6: financial house even further in order than we've come. We've
- 12:08Speaker 6: come a long way in the last ten years in
- 12:10Speaker 6: this state, and that's a wonderful thing, but there's much
- 12:13Speaker 6: ground to be gained.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Why do you think it's a pretty good time, Kevin,
- 12:18Speaker 3: to be a Republican in West Virginia? And it has been,
- 12:21Speaker 3: you know, for of well over over ten years. I
- 12:24Speaker 3: keep running out of name. As we called it, the
- 12:25Speaker 3: super majority, now the super duper majority. Now I'm gonna
- 12:28Speaker 3: have to add another duper onto that. I guess what
- 12:31Speaker 3: is it about the Republican message that you think, sir
- 12:35Speaker 3: is resonating so much? I've said it before. I mean,
- 12:39Speaker 3: I think that the political historians one hundred years from
- 12:43Speaker 3: now are going to look back on this wave that
- 12:46Speaker 3: rolled over West Virginia that really started before Donald Trump.
- 12:49Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 12:50Speaker 3: What is it about the message that you think is
- 12:52Speaker 3: getting over so much with West Virginian Sir.
- 12:54Speaker 6: Well, I think West Virginians are in general self really people,
- 13:01Speaker 6: and that there's a core of that in the Republican
- 13:03Speaker 6: message as opposed to the other side. And like David,
- 13:06Speaker 6: as you mentioned, it's historic. I'm sixty four, so I
- 13:11Speaker 6: have memory when the pigulum was swung almost exactly opposite
- 13:15Speaker 6: from where it is today, when there's just a tiny
- 13:18Speaker 6: handful of senators and delegates in the Republican Party and
- 13:22Speaker 6: it swung so fast. And certainly, certainly the Trump factor
- 13:26Speaker 6: has accelerated, but you're right, it began before he was
- 13:30Speaker 6: on the political horizon. I think it's basic common sense.
- 13:34Speaker 6: I think the I think the other side road the
- 13:37Speaker 6: traditions of West Virginia from the mine Wars and all that,
- 13:43Speaker 6: and the Democratic Party was the working Man's Party and
- 13:45Speaker 6: all that, and you know they that momentum carried them
- 13:49Speaker 6: for a long time, even beyond substance in my opinion,
- 13:53Speaker 6: and so when it swung, it swung quick, and then
- 13:55Speaker 6: you have to look back and say, man, there was
- 13:57Speaker 6: some there was some pretty key leadership that executed things.
- 14:02Speaker 6: Now justice you know Tim Armstead as speaker, when the
- 14:05Speaker 6: Republicans did gain the control, and then what they accomplished,
- 14:09Speaker 6: they hit the ground running on both sides of the
- 14:13Speaker 6: both sides of the Capitol. And so it's I don't
- 14:15Speaker 6: think there's one thing you can point to, but I
- 14:18Speaker 6: do agree with your assessment completely. It will be looked at, studied,
- 14:21Speaker 6: and highlighted as a unique pendulum swing politically in our state.
- 14:26Speaker 6: I'm glad I lived to see it and to see
- 14:30Speaker 6: the good things that have come from.

- 15:00Speaker 6: of all the Lord for opening this door. I shouldn't
- 15:03Speaker 6: be here. There were thirteen people that applied for this position.
- 15:08Speaker 6: Three were selected to be referred to to the governor.
- 15:11Speaker 6: And that was a prestigious list. On the thirteen, a
- 15:14Speaker 6: lot of good people. I know most of them, and
- 15:16Speaker 6: the three that advanced. I was it sounds cliche coming
- 15:20Speaker 6: off the awards shows and all that it was an

- 15:25Speaker 6: I thank the Lord. This is what he has done.

- 18:29Speaker 3: be a terrible, terrible mistake. Do not do it, says
- 18:33Speaker 3: a Texter. Tex says, well, no surprise. We got a
- 18:35Speaker 3: fundamentalist Christian appointed to the Senate. Kevin sounds like he'll
- 18:39Speaker 3: reverse same sex marriage. Dave, you should have someone from
- 18:42Speaker 3: a legal cannabis state on to give their opinion on legislation.
- 18:47Speaker 3: The opinion from a guy who's never left West Virginia
- 18:49Speaker 3: and other states doesn't have any validity. Then, diagram of MAGA, Republicans,
- 18:53Speaker 3: fundamentalist Christians, and cult members is a circle, says a Texter.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I don't know about that one, Texas Kevin translated. I

- 19:08Speaker 3: lazy and not want to work multiple low wage jobs
- 19:11Speaker 3: to barely get by, it says a text. What a well,
- 19:17Speaker 3: let me let me get to this. Coming up on
- 19:18Speaker 3: the show tomorrow. Delegate Mike Pushkin, State Democratic Party Chair,
- 19:22Speaker 3: will be on the show tomorrow. We're going to talk

- 19:27Speaker 3: Little Animal Talk tomorrow. Good friend Porter Wagner of the
- 19:30Speaker 3: Pick of the Litter Animal Rescue Group will be on
- 19:32Speaker 3: the show coming up tomorrow. And as I said, Charleston
- 19:34Speaker 3: Mayor Amy Shielder good ones coming up on this show
- 19:37Speaker 3: a little bit later on. But Dave Iland Show in
- 19:38Speaker 3: five Videy LIVEE brought to you partly by Morgan and Morgan,
- 19:40Speaker 3: America's largest injury law firm. What a first week or
- 19:45Speaker 3: so of both the administrations of West Virginia Governor Patrick
- 19:50Speaker 3: Morrison President Donald Trump. Now, I am not an economist
- 19:54Speaker 3: by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm going to
- 19:58Speaker 3: go ahead and guess and based on everything I've read,
- 20:02Speaker 3: that your prices on a lot of stuff are about
- 20:06Speaker 3: to go up, produce being one of the major things.
- 20:11Speaker 3: And stop me if I'm rung. Didn't we elect Trump
- 20:15Speaker 3: because we were tired of high prices? Now comes worth
- 20:18Speaker 3: that Canada. Our evil neighbors to the north are pulling
- 20:22Speaker 3: our products off the shelves, those evil Canadians. This is
- 20:27Speaker 3: going to get interesting. And as I said, I am
- 20:30Speaker 3: not an economist. I'm just a guy that you know
- 20:34Speaker 3: doesn't like paying a lot because the older I get,
- 20:37Speaker 3: the cheaper I get. And now the Trump administration is
- 20:43Speaker 3: asking for information on people that investigated or pretty much
- 20:49Speaker 3: had anything to do from a government standpoint into the
- 20:53Speaker 3: January sixth investigations, and of course getting a lot of
- 21:00Speaker 3: attention in the news I watched. I consumed a lot
- 21:02Speaker 3: of it over the weekend, so trying to get over
- 21:04Speaker 3: this cold, so I thought, well, I'll just vedge in
- 21:06Speaker 3: front of the TV a lot this weekend, do a
- 21:07Speaker 3: little reading and whatnot. DEI is getting a lot of
- 21:13Speaker 3: attention now. It was announced on Friday that West Virginia
- 21:17Speaker 3: University is closing its Division Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and
- 21:22Speaker 3: replacing it with something called the Division of Campus Engagement
- 21:26Speaker 3: and Marketing. Now Governor Morrissey is applotting to move although
- 21:31Speaker 3: the people I talked with at university say that not
- 21:34Speaker 3: a whole lot is actually going to change really, And
- 21:39Speaker 3: I think one of the biggest problems that we have
- 21:44Speaker 3: here is that everyone seems to have a different definition
- 21:49Speaker 3: of what DEI is. That seems to be a major problem,
- 21:57Speaker 3: including Governor Morrissey. Now he referred to it as and
- 22:01Speaker 3: this is quote any effort to promote differential treatment of
- 22:05Speaker 3: or to provide special benefits to individuals on the basis
- 22:09Speaker 3: of race, color, sex, ethnicity, or national origin end quote
- 22:17Speaker 3: and at WVU and then a little dive into some
- 22:20Speaker 3: of this over the weekend. Some of the things that
- 22:22Speaker 3: they did also connected staff with and students with various trainings,
- 22:28Speaker 3: veterans programs, therapy dogs, etc. So again, it varies depending
- 22:34Speaker 3: on the program. And you'll recall I talked about the
- 22:39Speaker 3: program a WVU on this show a couple of years ago,
- 22:41Speaker 3: but my criticism at the time was more about what
- 22:44Speaker 3: the executive director was being paid, considering that the university
- 22:49Speaker 3: was cutting programs right and left and was really struggling financially,
- 22:54Speaker 3: which it still is now. April call who is with
- 22:57Speaker 3: the university, has said that students and staff will see
- 23:02Speaker 3: very few changes, and so it looks and sounds good
- 23:10Speaker 3: if you are in favor of eliminating or changing up DEI.
- 23:13Speaker 3: But I don't expect that a whole lot is actually
- 23:18Speaker 3: going to change. Older adults should protect themselves against severe
- 23:23Speaker 3: respiratory disease. Talk to your doctor about flu, COVID nineteen
- 23:26Speaker 3: and RSV vaccines Risk Lass, do more and get started

- 23:32Speaker 3: Department of Health and Human Services. Let me see tex
- 23:36Speaker 3: says it was very generous for President Trump to schedule
- 23:39Speaker 3: a market crash rather than to have it happened unexpectedly.
- 23:41Speaker 3: He has a very big lely brain as a texture.
- 23:45Speaker 3: I don't want to spend a whole lot of time
- 23:46Speaker 3: talking about this because I know Wilson and Meadows are
- 23:48Speaker 3: going to get into it more on talk Line today.
- 23:50Speaker 3: But Brad mclhenney has a story posted this morning wv
- 23:53Speaker 3: Metronews dot com that the nation's report card has been released.
- 23:58Speaker 3: The National Assessment of Education Progress is what it's called,
- 24:01Speaker 3: and it tests students in the fourth and eighth grades.
- 24:06Speaker 3: West Virginia's test scores, as Brad points out, are holding steady,
- 24:11Speaker 3: but we are still below the majority of the nation.
- 24:15Speaker 3: The majority of our students. Students are not meeting grade
- 24:20Speaker 3: level expectations in both reading and math. Now in math
- 24:28Speaker 3: our numbers went up, but only actually one of only
- 24:31Speaker 3: fifteen states that the numbers went up, but still still
- 24:34Speaker 3: well below where they should be. Something just not right
- 24:43Speaker 3: in our schools. And again, Brad's got the story post
- 24:45Speaker 3: to wv metronews dot com and I'll let mister Wilson,
- 24:49Speaker 3: mister Meadows handle that a little bit more. On talk line,
- 24:52Speaker 3: tex says, the idiot Trump cultists will start to regurgitating
- 24:56Speaker 3: the synchronized conservative outrage media propaganda as to why higher
- 25:00Speaker 3: are beneficial for everyone. These people's only values is competing
- 25:04Speaker 3: on how hard they ride the narrative given to them
- 25:09Speaker 3: Texas Day. The nation's top economists agree Trump's policies are
- 25:12Speaker 3: terrible and anyone who thinks otherwise is crazy. Virtually all economists,
- 25:17Speaker 3: this is a quote, according to a textor virtually all
- 25:19Speaker 3: economists think that the impact of the terroriffs will be
- 25:21Speaker 3: very bad for America and for the world, says an
- 25:24Speaker 3: economics professor at Columbia University and a winner of the
- 25:28Speaker 3: Nobel the Nobel Prize in Economic sciences. They will almost
- 25:32Speaker 3: surely be inflationary, according to a text. All right, We're

- 29:12Speaker 3: I was going to because I know with everything that's

- 29:26Speaker 10: Thank you so much. I had recalling, you know, this
- 29:31Speaker 10: is what mothers do, right. I was recalling when he
- 29:35Speaker 10: was born, the day he was born, with him yesterday,
- 29:38Speaker 10: and I tell the story every year and I love it. It's
- 29:41Speaker 10: you know, when you have a baby. Just FYI, many
- 29:43Speaker 10: of you who have been in those delivery rooms, you're
- 29:45Speaker 10: a little out of it. Speaking of being out of
- 29:47Speaker 10: it because there's so many things going on. And I
- 29:51Speaker 10: remember standing there in the nurse saying, y'all should play
- 29:54Speaker 10: the lottery. And I looked at Booth and I said,
- 29:56Speaker 10: why is she asking me or why is she telling
- 29:58Speaker 10: us play the Lottery's? Well, your baby's numbers are two
- 30:02Speaker 10: O three oh four. He was born exactly at ten thirty,
- 30:05Speaker 10: because I know sometimes like ten thirty one, thirty, ten
- 30:08Speaker 10: forty six, twenty, you know that kind of thing. And
- 30:11Speaker 10: and he was born was seven eleven, and so that's
- 30:17Speaker 10: I always say we won the lottery when we got
- 30:19Speaker 10: Samuel Schuler Goodwin. He's uh, he's our fire, he's our

- 30:37Speaker 10: just want to let you know I'm twenty one now.
- 30:40Speaker 10: I said, Honey, I remember if there's anyone in this

- 31:07Speaker 3: shut No. Yeah, you know, just I don't need to

- 31:12Speaker 10: And I'm super you know, we're super blessed our boys.
- 31:14Speaker 10: We're really close, really close family. And I appreciate that
- 31:18Speaker 10: I was top of mine and tip of tongue for
- 31:20Speaker 10: him at one am. Oh hey, by the way, I'm
- 31:22Speaker 10: holding a beer in my hand. Legally I'm gonna call
- 31:25Speaker 10: my mother.
- 31:27Speaker 3: Let me I'll tell I'll tell you a quick story.
- 31:29Speaker 3: The day the day I turned twenty one, I was
- 31:31Speaker 3: a Marshall University student, okay, and I went down to
- 31:35Speaker 3: and this shows you how old I am. I went
- 31:37Speaker 3: down the Big Bear on at the end of Third
- 31:40Speaker 3: Avenue on Huntington and uh. And I had saved money,
- 31:44Speaker 3: because that's what you do, you know, in college. I
- 31:47Speaker 3: had saved money because I wanted to go purchase. Even
- 31:50Speaker 3: though I'm not a whiskey drinker per se, I wanted
- 31:54Speaker 3: to go on my twenty first per.
- 31:55Speaker 10: A big boy.
- 31:56Speaker 3: And well, I went and I and I and I
- 31:59Speaker 3: never will forget at this. I got a bottle of
- 32:01Speaker 3: something so cheap, and I went to the counter and
- 32:04Speaker 3: the lady started, you know, checking me out, and she
- 32:08Speaker 3: did not ask for my ID. Oh, And I said
- 32:12Speaker 3: to her, I said, would you like to ask for
- 32:15Speaker 3: my ID? And she looked at me and she said,
- 32:18Speaker 3: let me guess you're twenty one today.
- 32:21Speaker 10: Shocking boy, this has never happened to me. I want
- 32:24Speaker 10: do you know what? She was just waiting. She's like,
- 32:25Speaker 10: here he comes here, a proud as a peacock, your
- 32:28Speaker 10: chest puffed out. And she thought, I'm not gonna.
- 32:31Speaker 3: And I ended up giving the bottle away to somebody
- 32:33Speaker 3: because I just I just wanted to go do it.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Why I didn't just buy a beer or something.
- 32:37Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 32:38Speaker 3: Bartle's and James Wine. Cool word, you know something back
- 32:40Speaker 3: in the day. The mayor is here and as always
- 32:43Speaker 3: is open to take your questions and comments. It's open
- 32:45Speaker 3: lines with the mayor. You got something on your mind?
- 32:47Speaker 3: Bigley Pickley Wiggly hotline three zero four three four five

- 32:57Speaker 3: do with you. That's about the other cop sation. Not
- 33:01Speaker 3: promoting weed, says a texture. But alcohol is as bad
- 33:05Speaker 3: or worse than weed, and it's legal. Anyone who says
- 33:07Speaker 3: otherwise is fooling themselves and doesn't understand alcohol.
- 33:10Speaker 10: As yeah, are the mother of two boys twenty one
- 33:12Speaker 10: and twenty soon to be twenty three, I do worry
- 33:15Speaker 10: about alcohol. There's there's no ques. I mean, I know
- 33:17Speaker 10: that doesn't have anything to do with me, but as
- 33:19Speaker 10: you know, I'm the mayor, but I'm a mom first,
- 33:21Speaker 10: and so I'm always keeping that on children. Speaking of
- 33:24Speaker 10: children and West Virginia, children not children. She's a young woman. Now,
- 33:28Speaker 10: how about your affair four? About her? This morning?
- 33:31Speaker 3: I have not, but I know Chris and Jeff had
- 33:34Speaker 3: a story. I think she won four Grammys, and I
- 33:36Speaker 3: remember when she was on this show. She came on,
- 33:39Speaker 3: I guess promoting Live on the Levee.
- 33:40Speaker 10: She was, she was on Live on the Levee and boys,
- 33:44Speaker 10: she's just taken off. I mean, I don't know if
- 33:45Speaker 10: you're gonna have Pushkin on this week Er news.
- 33:47Speaker 3: He's actually on tomorrow.
- 33:48Speaker 10: Oh okay, Well, Mike Pushkin, Delicate Pushkin is very close
- 33:52Speaker 10: with her, as played with her Gostu Wiz. I don't
- 33:55Speaker 10: know how many thousands of times, hundreds of times, and
- 33:58Speaker 10: they're very close. But boy, oh boy, it was. It
- 34:00Speaker 10: was wonderful to see her taking center stage. You know,
- 34:04Speaker 10: four time Grammy Award winning artists now Charleston, West Virginia.
- 34:07Speaker 10: We're just well, we've had a great week. I mean
- 34:10Speaker 10: last week also, we had a chef, Chase uh Collier
- 34:16Speaker 10: at restaurant a Bersei, which is the restaurant I went
- 34:19Speaker 10: to last week for a restaurant week. He's now a
- 34:21Speaker 10: nominee for the Best Chef in the Southeast SAMs nominee
- 34:26Speaker 10: is nominee. I mean, we just we've had We've had
- 34:29Speaker 10: a really good couple of weeks for people making making
- 34:32Speaker 10: headlines for all the right reasons. Hard work, dedication. I mean,
- 34:35Speaker 10: talk about two industries, two businesses that you really have
- 34:38Speaker 10: to put your nose to the grindstone and keep going.
- 34:42Speaker 10: And nights, weekends, holidays when nobody's there, there are no
- 34:47Speaker 10: cameras there. It's not fun and games, you know, perfecting
- 34:50Speaker 10: your craft. These two young individuals are just they're killing
- 34:55Speaker 10: it for us. It's really special, really special.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Got a text here for you as for mayor, can
- 35:01Speaker 3: we get the city to supply plastic recycling bags. I
- 35:05Speaker 3: live on what I'm told is a supervisor route. I
- 35:08Speaker 3: have a full blue bind, but the city won't pick
- 35:10Speaker 3: it up since it's not bagged, because the truck doesn't
- 35:12Speaker 3: come down my street. I'm not rich, and these bags
- 35:15Speaker 3: are getting expensive. Neither bin emptied or a supply of
- 35:18Speaker 3: city bags.
- 35:19Speaker 10: Yeah, So I wish this person would call me three
- 35:22Speaker 10: four eight eight one seven four three four eight eight
- 35:24Speaker 10: one seven four in the Mayor's office. If you don't
- 35:27Speaker 10: mind to give me a holler, I will go ahead
- 35:29Speaker 10: and say this. It's something that is brought up often.
- 35:33Speaker 10: Why don't we You know, we used to in the
- 35:35Speaker 10: City of Charleston give away recycling bags and garbage bags.
- 35:39Speaker 10: They were paper thin, they would break. It was close
- 35:42Speaker 10: to four hundred and sixty thousand dollars a year we
- 35:45Speaker 10: would spend on these bags, which, by the way, we
- 35:48Speaker 10: gave you recycling bags that were not recyclable. And so
- 35:53Speaker 10: we were the only city I still have not found
- 35:56Speaker 10: in six years of big Mayor. So I have not
- 35:57Speaker 10: found another city, not just in the state of West Virginia,
- 36:00Speaker 10: in the country who would do this. And the reason
- 36:03Speaker 10: why is because back in the day when we all
- 36:05Speaker 10: had metal cans, a lot of folks had metal cans.
- 36:08Speaker 10: They put their trash out and to fill up with
- 36:10Speaker 10: rain or snow and it would get really heavy.
- 36:13Speaker 3: Uh.
- 36:13Speaker 10: And so the answer to a lot of our injuries
- 36:15Speaker 10: and it makes sense back then, right, Okay, we'll give
- 36:18Speaker 10: people bags. So our guys could you know, pull the
- 36:20Speaker 10: bags out. But the bags that we were giving were
- 36:24Speaker 10: you know, a huge cost, and by the way, not
- 36:27Speaker 10: everybody picked them up. When I became mayor, I said,
- 36:29Speaker 10: where do we where do we house these? How many
- 36:31Speaker 10: do we have left? We had a tractor trailer full
- 36:33Speaker 10: of them.
- 36:34Speaker 9: Uh.
- 36:35Speaker 10: So we started to use them during our you know,
- 36:38Speaker 10: team up to clean up pickups and for park and
- 36:40Speaker 10: rex and internal use as well, just to make sure
- 36:43Speaker 10: that we were useful of that. But if that person
- 36:45Speaker 10: wants to call me, I'm super happy to have a
- 36:48Speaker 10: have a conversation about their route and the challenges that
- 36:52Speaker 10: they're having with your Yeah, sure you met three oh
- 36:54Speaker 10: four three four eight eight one seven four. If you
- 36:57Speaker 10: ask for Andrew Uh, he'll be able to take all
- 37:00Speaker 10: your information. I appreciate that.
- 37:02Speaker 3: Tex says, is there a city ordinance concerning the number
- 37:04Speaker 3: of dogs that can be in one household within the
- 37:07Speaker 3: city limits.
- 37:07Speaker 10: Yeah, there is, it's actually on ordnance. It's it's actually
- 37:12Speaker 10: two and then they need a permit. But if you
- 37:16Speaker 10: want more than two dogs, you can do a written
- 37:20Speaker 10: application and send it to our humane officer and then
- 37:25Speaker 10: the the permit shouldn't include a copy of you know,
- 37:29Speaker 10: you know your your site plan, you know your house,
- 37:32Speaker 10: your property. You know, do you have big enough space
- 37:36Speaker 10: for those dogs? So you fencing? You know that kind
- 37:39Speaker 10: of thing too, But if, of course, if you have.
- 37:41Speaker 10: Of course, our our dog passed a year ago this January.
- 37:45Speaker 10: He was as my father in law like used to
- 37:47Speaker 10: like to say about Gus the bus Goodwin. He was
- 37:49Speaker 10: the perfect sized pony. So one dog was lab Saint Bernard.
- 37:53Speaker 10: He was enough dog for for for us. We could
- 37:57Speaker 10: the boys used to ride him when he was like
- 37:59Speaker 10: when he loved it of it.
- 38:00Speaker 3: So Tex says, does the mayor have any info on
- 38:03Speaker 3: the rumor that the town center is closing this summer?
- 38:07Speaker 10: No, that is not I mean, I you know, rumors
- 38:10Speaker 10: are just that. I will say that we work at
- 38:14Speaker 10: you know, every day, hand in glove. I went to
- 38:16Speaker 10: it with the owners of them all and with the
- 38:19Speaker 10: mall possibly could be moving forward, you know J C.
- 38:24Speaker 10: Penny when they filed for bankruptcy back in Dave twenty
- 38:28Speaker 10: twenty twenty.
- 38:30Speaker 3: Something like that. Yeah, I talked about it the other day.
- 38:32Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 38:33Speaker 10: I mean, you know, so when it happened, it shouldn't
- 38:35Speaker 10: have been a surprise.
- 38:37Speaker 3: Well, I mean they're closing somewhere in the neighbor of
- 38:39Speaker 3: one hundred and twenty stores across America.
- 38:41Speaker 10: Yeah, and they have been since, you know, since that time.
- 38:45Speaker 10: But what you know what, Well, I went to a
- 38:48Speaker 10: group last week to speak to actually business owners business
- 38:52Speaker 10: roundtable in we were talking about that and someone says,
- 38:55Speaker 10: you just have the ability to go in and take it. Well,
- 38:59Speaker 10: do I have the ability to go in and take
- 39:00Speaker 10: people's businesses? No? I don't. That's not what we do.
- 39:05Speaker 10: Are we working with the current owner? Yes? Are we
- 39:08Speaker 10: going to continue to Yes.
- 39:11Speaker 3: When you say you're working with the current owner, what
- 39:12Speaker 3: does that look like? Because I know there was a
- 39:15Speaker 3: lot of fanfare when the whole group bought them, and uh,
- 39:18Speaker 3: and you even arranged for us to have mister Hall
- 39:22Speaker 3: of the group on the show. And so what kind
- 39:25Speaker 3: of com I mean, if you I don't want to
- 39:26Speaker 3: give away too much, what kind of conversations go on? Because,
- 39:30Speaker 3: as you said, people you know, and last week when
- 39:33Speaker 3: this news came out, Mayor, I read all these comments online,
- 39:36Speaker 3: you know, from people that were saying, well, the city,
- 39:39Speaker 3: the city is. It's a private business and they can
- 39:41Speaker 3: pretty much do what they want, but but you do
- 39:43Speaker 3: try to get involved a little. I guess what do
- 39:45Speaker 3: the conversations look like?
- 39:46Speaker 10: Yeah, let me go backwards for I go forward. So
- 39:48Speaker 10: when I ran for mayor, I remember I used to say,
- 39:51Speaker 10: you know all that you know? You know Mayor Jones's
- 39:55Speaker 10: who is a dear friend of mine. I used to say, boy,
- 39:57Speaker 10: if you could have just schooled me on a couple
- 39:59Speaker 10: of things before I got in, what you think and
- 40:01Speaker 10: what you know when you get in Sometimes there are
- 40:03Speaker 10: two different things. But one thing I used to say,
- 40:05Speaker 10: and I still do believe this, is that a mayor's
- 40:08Speaker 10: job is not to bring you customers.
- 40:11Speaker 9: Right.
- 40:12Speaker 10: I can't open or close your business. That's on you,
- 40:14Speaker 10: private business owner. I believe that you know, as a
- 40:17Speaker 10: daughter of a small business owner. It's on you to
- 40:19Speaker 10: reinvent yourself, to watch the market and to keep up
- 40:22Speaker 10: with things. That's you, that's not me. But my job
- 40:24Speaker 10: is to make sure that there are more people in
- 40:27Speaker 10: front of your business, walking to your business in the area.
- 40:30Speaker 10: And I think that we have done an amazing job
- 40:32Speaker 10: doing that in and around the Town Center Mall and
- 40:35Speaker 10: will continue to do that. There is not a every
- 40:39Speaker 10: couple of weeks we are on the phone with them.
- 40:41Speaker 10: Over the past couple of weeks, we've been on the
- 40:42Speaker 10: phone with them every single week to talk about so
- 40:46Speaker 10: I still believe that, But I also believe the city
- 40:48Speaker 10: does have a large role in what goes on. And
- 40:52Speaker 10: so while we don't talk about it every single day,
- 40:54Speaker 10: we're looking at what else can we do with especially
- 40:59Speaker 10: this not just business owner, but the property itself and
- 41:04Speaker 10: the properties around it. What makes the best use. I
- 41:06Speaker 10: know people don't want to hear this. I hate hearing this.
- 41:09Speaker 10: My husband, who used to drive from Jackson County to
- 41:11Speaker 10: get his blue jeans and tennis shoes for school. You
- 41:14Speaker 10: went to the Town Center Mall. Those models don't work
- 41:17Speaker 10: any more. And people say, well, Barber's. You know, there's
- 41:20Speaker 10: lots of things Barber's momo. It's a different type of setting.
- 41:24Speaker 10: It just simply is it's not apples. It's not apples
- 41:27Speaker 10: to apples. Do I think that there is room for retail,
- 41:30Speaker 10: You better believe it. But I believe that there is
- 41:33Speaker 10: room for improvement, massive improvement. You're talking about more than
- 41:38Speaker 10: thirteen acres, Dave a little around thirteen acres of property,
- 41:43Speaker 10: and so where we have to get to, and again
- 41:47Speaker 10: these are long, hard conversations, is what can we be
- 41:50Speaker 10: moving forward? You know, while listen, I would love to
- 41:54Speaker 10: say put in a Dave and Busters. That's going to
- 41:56Speaker 10: solve it, my friend, It is not. It's not going
- 41:58Speaker 10: to one entity. Business is not going to solve a
- 42:02Speaker 10: problem that is a national problem. Of the way we
- 42:06Speaker 10: buy our goods right now is totally different, and so
- 42:10Speaker 10: we have to reinvent ourselves. My parents have had a
- 42:13Speaker 10: business for forty years. They've had to reinvent theirselves. How
- 42:16Speaker 10: they sell things, what type of things they sell, what
- 42:19Speaker 10: public is interested in buying, when and how are things
- 42:24Speaker 10: that we are that we're trying to work with them
- 42:27Speaker 10: on in the future. This is what I know. You know,
- 42:29Speaker 10: the capital sports complex, our investment, our continued investment in
- 42:34Speaker 10: the coliseum and convention Center, are reimagining of the municipal auditorium.
- 42:40Speaker 10: Those are the things currently the Colosseum and Convention Center
- 42:44Speaker 10: is the largest driver of economic development in the city
- 42:46Speaker 10: of Charleston. It just simply is. We have another hotel
- 42:49Speaker 10: coming in on the far side of the mall. Across
- 42:53Speaker 10: the street, you've got PoCA Valley Bank being built. Oh,
- 42:56Speaker 10: by the way, the street over a sixty million dollar
- 42:59Speaker 10: TC Energy build. Development is happening and we're part of
- 43:03Speaker 10: those conversations.

- 46:20Speaker 3: remained vacant and no activity whatsoever. And you just mentioned
- 46:24Speaker 3: the hotel again, when yeah.
- 46:25Speaker 10: That's not Actually plans were the final plans for the
- 46:29Speaker 10: hotel where I want to say two weeks ago, but
- 46:31Speaker 10: I don't want to lie, so I'll say within the
- 46:33Speaker 10: last seven to fourteen days those plans were submitted and
- 46:37Speaker 10: we make progress on the Capitol Sports Complex every day.
- 46:40Speaker 3: Dex says, reimagining is always a questionable speak. What do
- 46:43Speaker 3: you mean specifically by reimagining the Municipal Auditorium.
- 46:47Speaker 10: Well, I think there's a couple of things right now.
- 46:49Speaker 10: We have a study out to see what is the
- 46:52Speaker 10: viability of the outside shell structure. Everybody wants me to
- 46:56Speaker 10: save the outside facade. Quite frankly, I would like that
- 47:00Speaker 10: as well, but I need to see if we can
- 47:03Speaker 10: do that. It is in such disrepair that I'm not
- 47:06Speaker 10: sure that we can, and so I never want to
- 47:08Speaker 10: give people false hope. So it's not really double speak.
- 47:10Speaker 10: I'm really not trying to be cute or coy about it.
- 47:12Speaker 10: I'm not sure what's going to happen. That's the real answer,
- 47:16Speaker 10: and so we have to reimagine. It's kind of like
- 47:18Speaker 10: the mall. We can't just think it's going to stay
- 47:21Speaker 10: exactly the way that it's been. That's not that's just
- 47:25Speaker 10: not reality. Everybody wants nineteen eighty five, yeah, I mean, yeah, yeah,
- 47:30Speaker 10: eighty three one was you know, was launched. That probably
- 47:34Speaker 10: will not be what the town Center Mall will be.
- 47:37Speaker 10: Do I know exactly what it will be?
- 47:39Speaker 2: No?
- 47:39Speaker 10: But will it be exactly what it is now? I

- 48:00Speaker 3: because I don't know about you, but I'm over winter
- 48:02Speaker 3: completely and I'm already looking at this temperature and we're
- 48:05Speaker 3: going to break records today form like seventy degree temperatures.
- 48:07Speaker 3: I'm thinking about Live on the Levee. Just the future
- 48:09Speaker 3: of Live on the Levee. Yeah, I've heard some stuff.
- 48:11Speaker 10: Yeah, Live on the Levee is going to be in Charleston,
- 48:14Speaker 10: West Virginia period as long as I'm mayor, We're going
- 48:16Speaker 10: to have Live on the Levee. But just as we
- 48:18Speaker 10: talk about right, reimagining, revisioning, we have something going on
- 48:22Speaker 10: in the city of Charleston, several things every weekend. And
- 48:26Speaker 10: what happens is you know that, while that's great, remember
- 48:30Speaker 10: we have a team of city employees, streets, traffic, refuse, police, fire,
- 48:35Speaker 10: We're stretching everybody so thin. So while Live on the Levee,
- 48:38Speaker 10: just like fest of all, just like We'regatta, are all
- 48:41Speaker 10: going to continue, and we just had a big meeting
- 48:44Speaker 10: last week about all of these things. It may look
- 48:46Speaker 10: a little different, may have every other week instead of
- 48:50Speaker 10: every week, may have bigger bands, may have shorter sets,
- 48:54Speaker 10: but it's going to be here. Live on the Levee
- 48:56Speaker 10: is so great, just like Wegatta. It's a free, fun
- 49:00Speaker 10: family event that's never going to change in this administration
- 49:03Speaker 10: because we know how many people it draws. But we
- 49:06Speaker 10: also know because we keep our eye on our numbers.
- 49:09Speaker 10: In August, Live on the Levi's numbers are abysmal. Why
- 49:13Speaker 10: because school started, football is started, and families are you know,
- 49:18Speaker 10: wrapping up and getting back to you know, getting back
- 49:22Speaker 10: to school. So we're taking a very close look at
- 49:25Speaker 10: what does it look like this year. But we have submissions,
- 49:29Speaker 10: you know, from bands from all over and we're really
- 49:31Speaker 10: excited to uh to pick some really great bands this year.
- 49:34Speaker 3: When when can we expect some announcements about entertainment for Regatta?
- 49:37Speaker 10: I think the application process. I think it's still open.
- 49:40Speaker 3: I mean, like you know, the the big big names.
- 49:43Speaker 10: Yeah, gosh, you wiz soon. So I say soon, But
- 49:48Speaker 10: you know, I never liked it ready. You know this day.
- 49:50Speaker 10: If I give somebody a day and I'll make that
- 49:52Speaker 10: day on the deadline, then it. She promised this and
- 49:55Speaker 10: she didn't come through. So you know this is what
- 49:59Speaker 10: I I do. Know we're thoughtful, and I say we
- 50:02Speaker 10: I'm not on that committee. By the way, we're thoughtful.
- 50:06Speaker 10: We want to make sure that we get a lot
- 50:08Speaker 10: of folks to come people, and by the way, we
- 50:10Speaker 10: pay attention. People love a tribute band, man, they love
- 50:14Speaker 10: a tribute band. And so we're going to look at
- 50:17Speaker 10: what we have and the folks that submitted, and the
- 50:21Speaker 10: committee will pick the committee in which I am not
- 50:24Speaker 10: give me.
- 50:24Speaker 3: About a minute or so on this. I mentioned the
- 50:26Speaker 3: weather and I don't care what punksa tany field of
