- 0:19So thank you. And yeah, let's get into this
- 0:22podcast, shall we? Boom.
- 0:24Hello. And welcome to another episode
- 0:27of the Christian we've podcast today's Guest is a podcaster.
- 0:32Professional translator and student.
- 0:34All the way from the Netherlands.
- 0:36He goes by the name Kyle Highfield.
- 0:38Welcome to the show. How you doing Carl?
- 0:41Hi Christian, I'm doing well, how are you?
- 0:45Very good, very good. Now, first off the bat, I've got
- 0:48to ask this because it's not obvious on your social medias or
- 0:51anything like that. Where are you actually from?
- 0:55All right. So I'm from the Netherlands,
- 0:59right? Okay.
- 1:01Okay. The sorry, but the accents
- 1:03messing with me and please pick up a piece of take offense,
- 1:06right? But like when I first heard it I
- 1:09was thinking is Australia or Maybe South Africa or I'm
- 1:13getting confused here because at first what I thought was that
- 1:15maybe you'd relocated to the Netherlands because you know,
- 1:19I've even interview people on the show that have done that and
- 1:22you know, obviously most European countries are very
- 1:25Multicultural so you get people from around the world anyway and
- 1:29I don't know that just threw me for a second another.
- 1:32Yeah, I get that, I get that more often than you think.
- 1:37Okay, okay, but now, I am Dutch, I live in that.
- 1:41Since I'm born here, cool. The accent is just something
- 1:46that kind of came with the, with learning the languages.
- 1:51Well, as you as you said, in my intro, I am a translator.
- 1:55That's not with it. And not without reason, I'm very
- 1:58interested in different languages so I also want to
- 2:02speak them the right way. And where did you?
- 2:05Presumably learn English at school then I would imagine or
- 2:10elsewhere. You blasted.
- 2:12That's a tricky question because of course I did take English
- 2:16classes in school, okay? But I don't know if that is
- 2:21where I got most of my my language skills.
- 2:25So to say, I don't know. So so the first thing is that in
- 2:31the Netherlands, we don't do a lot of TV series or movies and
- 2:37all that, okay? So we listen to a, we watch
- 2:41Watch English movies with that subtitles.
- 2:45Yeah, that's pretty. And so as a child, you grow up
- 2:49listening to English language with the translation and the
- 2:54need. That's where you start, picking
- 2:56up these at a very early age, what we use some of your
- 3:00favorite programs to watch grown up then Pokémon without a doubt
- 3:05Pokemon. I love you already.
- 3:11Each Pokémon fine. It's, I had, I play all the
- 3:15games, I had the training. Cause, what's what's this
- 3:18series? The movies, everything.
- 3:20How old are you? Now, if you don't mind me asking
- 3:2321, tell you what, so right. So you would have been very
- 3:27young because I'm 27, that's why I asked.
- 3:29So you would have grown up or at least when you were getting into
- 3:35Pokemon, you probably were getting into it around and say,
- 3:39like the diamond and Pearl error.
- 3:42Maybe maybe a bit before I leave.
- 3:46Green, was my first game. Okay, that's what I was gonna
- 3:49say, because I literally the undoubted that I literally grew
- 3:53up with the original games like and the movies when they came
- 3:56out, but I figured since you're sort of 21 that you're not like
- 4:00that much younger than me. So there's just it's going to be
- 4:05just like a couple of years afterwards.
- 4:06So that makes sense, right? Because that actually, that
- 4:08funny enough. That was the cutoff point for
- 4:10me. Then I What?
- 4:11Once leaf green came out, I played that excessively and then
- 4:14I think I was holding what? I've been eleven twelve.
- 4:18That's relatable, yeah. That that's when high school
- 4:21happened, you know what I mean? Yeah, girls and other stuff
- 4:25comes and you're just, you forget.
- 4:27But that being said, since we're just talking about Pokemons, for
- 4:31completely, unrelated low. Yeah, I've continued playing
- 4:34those games. I think they have a lot of
- 4:35replayability and, you know, I love you, you know, because I'm
- 4:38restricted by not Of having the finances to do like modern
- 4:43gaming and stuff. I always do like, Retro Gaming
- 4:46on streams and whatnot. So what's the first game?
- 4:48I played Pokemon? Actually the beginning of 2020,
- 4:55when everything went into lockdown.
- 4:57I downloaded an emulator, little my laptop, and I replayed
- 5:00Diamond and Pearl. Yeah.
- 5:03Like even before all of this stream and stuff, I was doing
- 5:06this every couple of years, I find myself going back to and
- 5:09go. Okay, let's play this.
- 5:11Again let's play this again and is mandatory almost yeah it's
- 5:14faster. I don't know what it is about
- 5:16those games that are so replayable because when I think
- 5:19about it in my mind that logically right, like like okay
- 5:24I've never completed the game in so much as like catching them.
- 5:28All out for me. Coming in the game, is kind of
- 5:30catching all of the Pokémon as many as you can catch.
- 5:33In the rare Pokemon be in the Pokémon League.
- 5:36Team will leak doing all the story and then that's kind it.
- 5:39And I know a lot of people going to argue You with me, right?
- 5:42He's a really important fact, with this.
- 5:45If you're using emulators, is actually impossible without
- 5:48cheats to complete the game simply because obviously, with
- 5:52the originals you need the consoles or, you know, the games
- 5:56in their original format and then you have to buy both
- 5:58versions of the get like, this is what I did Growing Up with
- 6:00the Gameboy, so I literally have like Game Boy, Advance and Game
- 6:04Boy, Advance SP set up, you know, Ruby and Sapphire or red
- 6:07and blue. And I would trade the Pokemon
- 6:09across, you know, For the right. That's that's what most kids
- 6:13did, unless you traded with your friends.
- 6:15That's what you did. And it quickly dawned on me,
- 6:20even when I was a kid, but this, this is just long, this just
- 6:23takes forever. Why would you do this?
- 6:25Just and then I looked at someone's video on YouTube about
- 6:28this, and they literally show you like, what you get, every
- 6:31time you beat the game in its entirety, and it's literally
- 6:36nothing. It's just, I suppose it's it's
- 6:38just clouds. Like okay, I got like a little A
- 6:41digital certificate that says feel more, but you don't get
- 6:44anything cool. I don't know, DLC would be
- 6:49called German. Let's say like you beat the game
- 6:50and you got like extra levels or something, right?
- 6:53Something unlocked but that's not the case now yeah you know
- 6:57and okay I don't ever normally complain about Pokemon because
- 7:00Pokemons amazing but that would be my only like you know thing
- 7:03that I would complain about is like you make it, you know like
- 7:06for example with the original games, you why not?
- 7:11A bit difficult with that generation but they did it later
- 7:13on. They did it.
- 7:14Like if you take gold and silver gold and silver in my opinion,
- 7:17are the best of like the original error because it's
- 7:20like, you got to basically complete the game and then boom,
- 7:25you get to play the whole of Canto, the original.
- 7:28And you have to go through all that and they've tweaked, it and
- 7:30changed it so that it's different.
- 7:31And it felt like two games in one.
- 7:34And I that just blew my mind when I was, like, yeah, I was
- 7:36like, wow. So this won't be us talking
- 7:40about. Pokemon the whole time.
- 7:42I just it's it's might be that it might be.
- 7:47It's not often that I talk about Pokemon aside from actually
- 7:51doing those streams to be honest.
- 7:53So yeah, me neither but it's great to find like-minded
- 7:57people. What do you make of the new
- 7:59stuff? These days that Pokemon go and
- 8:01like the newer Generation stuff? I mean, I don't want to be one
- 8:05of those people who's like, everything that came after I
- 8:10grew up. Is bad.
- 8:12But I mean if you look at them it's like I don't have to same
- 8:16feel and I'm sure that for the children who grow up with
- 8:19Pokemon now, it's the exact same.
- 8:21As our Pokémon was too. If you, if you look at a vault
- 8:26old, for example, is just a ball.
- 8:28Like it doesn't make any more sense than an ice cream cone but
- 8:30still it's, I don't know. You know, I actually agree with
- 8:35you on this. I think you're very, you're very
- 8:39right on this this whole Nostalgia thing.
- 8:41We always look at what we grew up with rose-tinted glasses.
- 8:43It's, you know, it's inevitable. But with that being said, and
- 8:49I'm going to give a foreign against for new new against
- 8:52that. Obviously I haven't played them
- 8:53but I've seen other people playing them.
- 8:54I've heard about them, I know enough to know that, like with
- 8:57the newer Generations you know we've got an insane amount of
- 9:01Pokemon and inevitably you have to introduce no new Pokemon
- 9:05every generation. That's its that's inevitable.
- 9:07But the coolest, the coolest that, the good things that I've
- 9:11seen Is obviously the games becoming more and more and more
- 9:13and more 3D, which like, the one thing I've always wanted and
- 9:17what would actually draw me to go out and buy a new Pokemon
- 9:20game would be if they made a sort of Skyrim Style, Pokemon
- 9:25RPG, like, bats actually be amazing.
- 9:28That's what I'm hoping for Wonder, and, like, the sort of
- 9:31gay. And it would be insane.
- 9:32But basically, to go from jet, like, region to region.
- 9:36So you start in canto, go to Johto.
- 9:39Go to Jose, and so on and so forth.
- 9:41Right? Like this would take many many,
- 9:43many years and you'd probably, I think, realistically you'd have
- 9:47to do in DLCs or maybe you could even do the whole thing like
- 9:50that. But that would be my ultimate
- 9:51one in a Pokemon game because I think that like, you know,
- 9:55they've done almost everything you could probably do as far as,
- 10:00like, changing the systems changing the games, making them
- 10:02more interesting. Making them more replayable,
- 10:04right? Right.
- 10:05And now that leads me to the negatives, right?
- 10:09Obviously like I said, Like the fact that the games look better
- 10:13and the quality is better in the 3D aspect is all good and
- 10:16everything. I feel like that's where it kind
- 10:17of ends with the good stuff because with the negativity
- 10:20aspect it's like it sounds like really difficult to play the
- 10:24games. Now, that's going to make me
- 10:25sound like a big old guy and obviously for the younger
- 10:28generation that would be look at me a bit like, always an idiot.
- 10:30He doesn't understand like, you know, he's just a boom or some
- 10:33shit, you know, and like that's a fair comment to make, but you
- 10:37got to remember like when the Pokemon games first started,
- 10:39they were really Ballistic, obviously.
- 10:42And then with each generation, they got a little bit harder.
- 10:44There was more to take on, but it was still stuff that you
- 10:47could kind of get your head around it really simple example,
- 10:51the weaknesses and the strengths aspect, you know, you could
- 10:55always build up a team, but more or less could be any other team,
- 11:01but it would take a lot of thinking on your part.
- 11:03So, you know, and you will probably always have a weak spot
- 11:06in your team, in some way, shape or form.
- 11:08But ultimately, you could sort of balance the team.
- 11:11So that it kind of worked like that way or failing that you
- 11:14could probably have a Pokemon that, you know, knows, lots of
- 11:17different attacks from different.
- 11:19But, you know, I'm Goin with ya. But the issue that I've seen is
- 11:24that now, there are Pokémon types that don't have like a
- 11:28type. That that's something I read
- 11:30about and like, some that don't even have weaknesses.
- 11:33And I'm like, how does that work?
- 11:34Like, how do you go about being that?
- 11:37Like, if you're playing actually competitively, how do you play
- 11:40competitively? A against teams of Pokemon that
- 11:43don't have any weaknesses, like, how do you do that?
- 11:45And that is where I kind of it draws me away and also makes me
- 11:49less inclined. You know, when I am able to do
- 11:52so to play the newer games, because I'm thinking, well, you
- 11:55know, I I like a challenge, but if it's like so much of a
- 11:59challenge that it's near impossible, it just puts me off.
- 12:02I don't know. All right.
- 12:03Yeah, I understand that, I get it but what do you make of that?
- 12:07What do you make of the newer games?
- 12:09As far as the stuff, I just laid out Yeah, I'm not sure about
- 12:15then like the sword and shield came out.
- 12:20I had to look at it. I haven't played it yet.
- 12:21Actually. I don't know, I like the 3D
- 12:26aspects of it but I've never done any competitive matches
- 12:32battles. So I'm not sure about that, but
- 12:36I do, I do see where you're coming from with.
- 12:38If they do if they at the Pokemon they do not have any
- 12:42weaknesses. What are you going to do?
- 12:44Right. It's all planning out your team
- 12:49and what you want them to be. Like I got DJ this Pokemon, I
- 12:53sponge because like I have to be tall Terrier that just brings it
- 12:58back now. Get that PTSD hearing that.
- 13:02Yeah, it's all. It's all about that.
- 13:03Nostalgia The eleventh eye recently replayed was it
- 13:08Pokemon? I don't read or something and
- 13:11then I did know. I did Pokemon Yellow.
- 13:13That was it and it was a lot harder than I remember.
- 13:17Like, I think I was actually better at playing the games when
- 13:19I was a kid because as an adult, I don't know, like, I remembered
- 13:24a lot of stuff, but there was stuff that I learnt this time
- 13:26around. I never knew that is that it's
- 13:29just pot or as I was playing live in a pool.
- 13:35Last year it was some pause was like, how did I do this?
- 13:40When I was 8, these are some difficult puzzles in there that
- 13:45let sometimes she does, I don't know.
- 13:48It took me some time to figure out.
- 13:53It's crazy. Okay, let's actually move on the
- 13:56right foot podcast, right? This was all right, yeah, let's
- 14:00do. This is fun.
- 14:01This is fun, right? You hosts a podcast called?
- 14:04I know you, what is the podcast about and what kind of topics
- 14:07do? You tend to discuss on that
- 14:08show? Alright, so it is called, I know
- 14:12you. And what we do is every episode,
- 14:16I invite a guest with an interesting expertise and then I
- 14:20have a chat with them. About set expertise and what
- 14:24they have experienced and then what their General lives folks.
- 14:28Well, okay, so it's very interesting and we meet a lot on
- 14:32meet a lot of different people. For example, I've done an
- 14:36episode on quarrel with the marine biologist, I said yeah, I
- 14:40read about that. That was really cool awesome.
- 14:43Right. And then then now I have an
- 14:46interview scheduled with a world champion cooling.
- 14:50All right. So so we Meet.
- 14:52All these different kinds of people who have different kinds
- 14:55of skills and then, I'm sorry. Now, please go.
- 14:58All right, and then I'm just sitting there being super dumb.
- 15:04Like I taught this marine biologist who's, like good at a
- 15:07job. She knows his shit and I had the
- 15:10audacity to tell her that girl move like claw machines.
- 15:16But how did she react to that? Yeah, listen to the episode.
- 15:28She then continued to roast me for like five minutes.
- 15:34That's the beauty of it. Like, it's a comedy podcast, and
- 15:40informative, comedy podcast feel.
- 15:42Because after I'm done being all done, I actually asked for the
- 15:46actual answers to the questions, right?
- 15:50So you'll learn something. And you can see me being an
- 15:53idiot. It's a great combination.
- 15:57How do you land these guests? Like, what's your process for
- 15:59finding guests? It's at this point, it's mostly
- 16:0650/50 between reddits and just my personal Network.
- 16:12I like, as I started out, I found this group of starting
- 16:17podcasters, right? And so we have a Discord group
- 16:21and then like, hey, I'm starting out as anyone want to be a guest
- 16:24on my show. And that's how I got my first
- 16:27couple of guests. Yeah, it's a real struggle.
- 16:30When you're first starting, isn't it to get those first?
- 16:33That's the show grows. It's easier to get higher
- 16:36profile, guests on the show who have been your some of your
- 16:40favorite guests to have on the show.
- 16:45I loved every one so far. That's what I always say.
- 16:51It's the politically correct answer.
- 16:53Now I has I had this tabletop role-playing going on.
- 16:59His name was Sam and we would just improvising the whole
- 17:04episode. We did zero preparation.
- 17:06We just went into it like all right, we're going to talk about
- 17:08this then like during the episode, he was actually
- 17:13quizzing me on his podcast which I said I had listened to which I
- 17:18did. But not than that, Much detail.
- 17:22So yeah, that was a great episode on tabletop role-playing
- 17:26to incite, I didn't know shit. Have you have you ever had any
- 17:31sort of like challenging guests and if so, like, how did you
- 17:34actually never get it? I would say I'm hot really
- 17:39challenging guess, although, I guess the main issue is that
- 17:44sometimes they get the guests. A lot of talking about this
- 17:49subject so much that it's kind of hard to get new questions in
- 17:53because these are shut up, shut up, let me speak trying to host
- 18:00a podcast here. No.
- 18:03But at the same time, I can only appreciate that.
- 18:06Effort and how much knowledge they actually have.
- 18:10So that's fine. But I would say, that's the most
- 18:13challenging thing for me is to stay a host of my own podcast
- 18:17sometimes. What about the sort of the
- 18:19podcast in general? As far as, you know, setting up
- 18:22your research process. Everything like what the
- 18:24challenges associated with just producing your podcast.
- 18:30Well, I tried to do as much research as possible before I
- 18:33have my guest on, because you want to be Pad and you want to
- 18:37know what you're going to ask questions about especially when
- 18:39you're talking about their personal life.
- 18:43Because their expertise, they are very eager to talk about,
- 18:46but the personal stuff you have to dig for that sometimes.
- 18:50Yeah. Have you ever had any instances
- 18:53then where you sort of probed, and maybe they were like, nope.
- 18:56And then something like that hasn't happened to me yet, but I
- 19:01kind of imagine being like, fuck.
- 19:05Maybe we can move on to the next question, but that hasn't
- 19:09happened to me yet. One thing I always do to get
- 19:11around that is not always. But if I do have some questions
- 19:15that I'm like all this, I'm not sure about this question asking
- 19:19them, what I'll do is I'll ask them beforehand to be like is
- 19:22there anything off limits like I did with you today?
- 19:25Or is there any questions that you're uncomfortable with and a
- 19:28few times? There's been people that been
- 19:29that. Yeah, I don't want to talk about
- 19:31this uncomfortable this and I just make sure not to include
- 19:33that. So I feel like that Just a way
- 19:35of getting around that in general.
- 19:37So what I tend to do is I'll make a Google Document.
- 19:41Hmm, well, I write down my questions and then I send them
- 19:44that you have anything to add to this something else.
- 19:49You'd like to talk about or anything you'd like removed.
- 19:53And so that way are usually usually make that happen.
- 19:57So skewed. Oh no problems there.
- 19:58So far there was actually what its podcast time trying to set
- 20:04up at the moment. And with a celebrity and that
- 20:09was one of the things that they asked was that I send them the
- 20:12questions which I never ever do. And the reason that I don't is
- 20:17is not because I have anything to hide but it's just the kind
- 20:19of, I don't know. I like to kind of keep my guest,
- 20:24I don't want my guests to kind of calm with like, you know,
- 20:26like set aren't. I don't want it to be robotic.
- 20:29I want it to be conversational, like what this is, you know,
- 20:31because for example, I don't even necessarily ask all of my
- 20:34questions and a lot. My questions tend to be
- 20:37ad-libbed and I said this to this person that I was in the
- 20:40sociation, such as I was like, you know, I probably will ad-lib
- 20:44because it's just, you know, I don't want it to be robotic.
- 20:47It's it is an interview and it is supposed to be serious.
- 20:51But at the same time, I want my guests to feel comfortable.
- 20:54I wanted to be conversational. I think it's more interesting
- 20:57that way to listen to oh, for sure.
- 20:59Yeah you know I mean it's just because if you just listen to
- 21:02like a podcast interview and it's just like Blah, blah, blah,
- 21:06blah, blah. Okay next question blah blah
- 21:08blah blah blah. Okay, now it's just I don't
- 21:10know, I would hate that and you know, this isn't this isn't a
- 21:13chat show. This isn't like, you know, it
- 21:15because I've seen interviews like that and I'm like It's fine
- 21:19for what it is. But like, I think you've got to
- 21:22look at like the the medium that you're dealing with.
- 21:26Like if you're watching like some, I don't know music awards
- 21:29show and there's a guy interviewing a musician or
- 21:32something, right. Fair enough.
- 21:34You know what to expect with that interview format, you know,
- 21:36it's going to be very quick. Probably about five ten minutes
- 21:39and it'll be quick fire. The won't be long winded.
- 21:42Answers that be it but you want long-winded with a podcast.
- 21:46That's what I was very adamant about.
- 21:48And setting up my podcast is, I need some comedy in there.
- 21:52I need something to be funny and I don't want it to be just
- 21:54question. Answer the question answer
- 21:56because we can do that. I could I could question
- 21:59somewhat on what Coral is and how long it lifts for, but you
- 22:03don't need a podcast for that. Like if you if I'm listening to
- 22:08podcasts I want there to be something more and I think I've
- 22:11figured that out nicely in my case.
- 22:14So what are your goals and aspirations for this show?
- 22:17Then would you want to? Do with it.
- 22:19What you want it to go, maybe it's better question.
- 22:22You know, I'd love if it eventually grew big and I could
- 22:28maybe get some income from it because I love doing it, you
- 22:31know, it's so much fun. But at the same time, I'm
- 22:35realistic and in a step that there are millions of podcasts
- 22:38out there and it's very difficult to make it, but you
- 22:41have to stay optimistic in a way, you know?
- 22:43Absolutely. So we'll keep we'll keep
- 22:45dreaming and eventually we'll get where we We set out to get
- 22:50like, yeah, I agree with you and I've said this to several
- 22:52different podcasts has that had on the show.
- 22:55So, sorry for everyone listening who, you know, finds it annoying
- 22:58that I say the same things over and over again.
- 23:00But you know what? It's true when you're when
- 23:03you're doing podcasts. Not everyone is as committed as
- 23:08they should be. And I've seen, you know, like
- 23:10I've said many times before I've seen many occasions where people
- 23:13set up a podcast and then like yeah I'm going to set up a
- 23:16podcast. I'm going to do this and I'm
- 23:17like, okay, chat to me again when you're done like 50, guys
- 23:22is true. You know, after this is episode
- 23:2473 of the podcast and the one thing that I always look at is
- 23:30the progression that occurs within that time, you know,
- 23:33because there has to be progression.
- 23:34Now has to change over time as to get better.
- 23:37You I mean, do the process. I always use is try to do one
- 23:42better than you did last time, try to always, you know, make
- 23:46every single show the Like for instance, if this is the first
- 23:50time someone is here in your show, make sure that they want
- 23:54more, you know, because if you just half-ass it or don't put
- 23:57the effort in or whatever. Then a person might come across
- 24:01it and be like, why should I bother?
- 24:02And that's not what you want, right?
- 24:04You want people to stick around. I always want my next episode to
- 24:08get at least one more downloads than the previous one.
- 24:12And so, so when that doesn't happen like, you know, you can
- 24:16help it but still you little Little bit disappointed.
- 24:19Dude, I know where you're coming from like, and this is the
- 24:22problem I have with analytics, just in general both on YouTube
- 24:27on anchor and all the platforms. Like it's so Random, like I'll
- 24:32have here's a good example, I had one episode the other day
- 24:35that got like, you know, 50 views on YouTube, which is good
- 24:39for me like I don't know. Ten ten downloads or something
- 24:44and then the next episode got like three here though and it
- 24:48had To do with quality or something like that.
- 24:50Episode that people enjoyed it, people really liked it, you
- 24:54know? It's just I don't know.
- 24:56I think it comes down to, you know, the audience is that the
- 25:01people because let's be real every time you have someone on
- 25:04your podcast and you're starting out particularly if it's another
- 25:06podcast or just so it doesn't, it doesn't even have to be
- 25:09another pocket. Just anyone in general, the idea
- 25:12is you want to gauge, you want to get into that person's
- 25:15audience. So with me you appearing on my
- 25:17show You know, benefits us both in different ways.
- 25:20So for anyone listening to this podcast, they'll go check you
- 25:23out. Maybe you'll gain some more
- 25:25subscribers, whatever, and vice versa, I might potentially gain
- 25:29some from your audience. That's The Unofficial unspoken
- 25:33agreeing, right? Let's let's not dance around it,
- 25:35right? But with that, it doesn't always
- 25:38work the way you want it to. And, you know, I find that a lot
- 25:41of people who aren't podcasters who just asked me about this
- 25:44podcast, they're all there. So fixated on numbers The time,
- 25:49you know, whether it be the you to the podcast or anything with
- 25:52the podcast, it's always. And I said this last episode, so
- 25:55I apologize. But it's like, who's the biggest
- 25:57guessed you had, you know, whose most famous guest you had and
- 26:00it's like, Don't get me wrong, I want to have celebrities in the
- 26:04show. That would be awesome.
- 26:05And I'm, I am trying believe me, but at the same time, like, you
- 26:11know, it's first of all - I want this to be about making good
- 26:16conversations and and making good content.
- 26:19So that every time my audience, you know, drops by to listen to
- 26:23this when it comes out like they're getting something good,
- 26:27you know? And just because you have a
- 26:29celebrity doesn't make anything good you know me.
- 26:31It's like because and I love what we were saying before.
- 26:34There's only so much that potential celebrities are
- 26:36willing to talk about you know. Yeah.
- 26:38What one complaint I always hear like when people were
- 26:40interviewing celebrities is like oh you know, I wish they'd ask
- 26:45them this or that. Don't you think they tried?
- 26:48They probably weren't allowed the pr manager?
- 26:51Probably. Absolutely.
- 26:53Not no way. Then there's also, the think
- 26:56there is plenty of interesting. Regular people out.
- 27:00There is one thing I noticed very quickly, you know, someone
- 27:05said to me recently and this is stuck with what a lot of things
- 27:08stick with me but, you know, you know how it is.
- 27:10Sometimes you just hear something and it just, that's
- 27:12it. It's, it becomes part of your
- 27:14Mantra. What you or your?
- 27:15What you think, right? And they said that every single
- 27:17person Has either a story to share or something that they
- 27:24know that you don't know. And that just blew my mind to
- 27:27think about like even when you meet someone who, okay, maybe
- 27:30maybe they're a bit of an idiot or maybe they're not.
- 27:32So, you know, they're not so bright but like, they'll still
- 27:35have something that you don't have.
- 27:39And that just blows my mind that fascinates me.
- 27:41And there's been so many times, like there's been times on this
- 27:43show when like, I interviewed someone and I hear something I
- 27:47do now that I didn't use To do before I go into every podcast
- 27:52with a blank mind. Now because I used to go in with
- 27:54like sort of certain expectations, like I'll probably
- 27:57go like this and we'll probably talk about this and blah blah
- 28:00blah. But the amount of times that
- 28:02people have shared things that I wasn't expecting yeah, I had a
- 28:06guy on one time who Like share the story about overcoming
- 28:12alcohol addiction which like he just dropped.
- 28:15You know, the fact that he'd he'd overcome and I was like Wow
- 28:18and I thought okay I got to take a risk and ask him about it and
- 28:22I did and he was cool about it and he shared any was really
- 28:26inspiring and I just think about stuff like that.
- 28:28Like yeah man that's what it's about like with this podcasting,
- 28:32in general, this journey it's about and this is probably the
- 28:35biggest takeaway that I get as well.
- 28:37And the reason I keep doing it is because I really Joy just
- 28:39learning from other people and speaking to other people and
- 28:42having conversations with other people.
- 28:44You know. Exactly.
- 28:45That's what I love most about doing all this man.
- 28:47That's what you do it for. I love, I love getting to know
- 28:50people. You know I'm very social person
- 28:54and the people you get to know along the way.
- 28:57It's just great, man. So many interesting stories out
- 29:01there. Just people who is sharing the
- 29:05thing of experience. Yeah, you never know.
- 29:09Know what you're going to get into before the interview.
- 29:12It's exciting to think about, isn't it?
- 29:13That I actually, I genuinely get really excited.
- 29:16Every time, the podcast is coming up.
- 29:18I like, yeah, come on, let's go. Let's go sure.
- 29:22Okay, man. So what are your goals for this
- 29:24year? And the reason I keep pressing
- 29:26this, this ghost thing is because I think everyone has a
- 29:29different approach to what they're trying to do.
- 29:31Like to give you an example with my YouTube, I've got three
- 29:34YouTube channels, right? And I set myself a goal at the
- 29:36beginning of the year, which is not something I normally We do
- 29:39normally just have like long term like I eventually want to
- 29:42do this, but this year I was like, you know what, I'll try
- 29:45and Manifest. This, this is what I'm aiming
- 29:46for and I said, like, I'll get 1000 subscribers and the main
- 29:51100 on the second 50 on the third.
- 29:53And I managed to get, I've already got one of those goals
- 29:55already. Got 100 over 100 on the second
- 29:58channel. So as ice, this is a good way to
- 30:00think about it, and especially I think if you tell your audience
- 30:03as well and you keep pushing that fact and keep encouraging
- 30:06them and keep trying to do these, like, ctas calls to
- 30:09Action. It does kind of push that along,
- 30:11especially when I started doing that on YouTube, just like doing
- 30:14little things like dropping a promo before the the podcast to
- 30:17say, hey, please subscribe. Hey, please check it out.
- 30:20Like I think that stuff helps. But yeah, what are your goals
- 30:23for this year? That what you trying to trying
- 30:25to achieve this? So for the podcast you me?
- 30:28Yeah. Let's take it to the podcast
- 30:29winner. Right?
- 30:30Right, right. So you know of course I like to
- 30:35dream big and I'd like to say well I want every episode to get
- 30:38100 Ives and downloads on release day.
- 30:41But at the same time, I realized that's not realistic, right?
- 30:45And so, I tend to have more, like, go with the flow attitude.
- 30:51Yeah. To it like, we'll just see how
- 30:53it does and if it does bad. Well, there's nothing we can do
- 30:56about it does. Well, that's great.
- 30:58Actually, I funny story that fits right in there I had to
- 31:04take a short break from podcasting because I was dealing
- 31:06with some personal stuff, you know, some things that I had to
- 31:09figure out and so I didn't check my stats for like a month,
- 31:15right? Which is like kind of my, the
- 31:17period of my break and after I checked the stats, it turned out
- 31:22that one of my episodes blew up in India.
- 31:26It at like 300 downloads in India.
- 31:29Cool. Do you know why was that was the
- 31:32person from India or No, not at all.
- 31:37No idea, cook down actually that happened to me one time but on
- 31:41YouTube, I had a guest called shoutout to John John Lannan
- 31:44who's like a podcaster comedian. And so, the Child author from I
- 31:50always was you from a get so somewhere.
- 31:52It somewhere in the stays. Sorry, I forgot right.
- 31:54Denver, I think Denver. Okay.
- 31:57Anyway, yeah. So two things happened.
- 32:01That was really weird. His episode blew up and One
- 32:04particular clip blew up which I think actually got more views
- 32:08than the actual podcast and the end, but nothing else did.
- 32:12So every other clip just, you know, tend to use 20 views but
- 32:16like the podcast got like 500. I think it's still my most
- 32:21viewed episode on YouTube and then this particular clip got
- 32:25like five or six hundred views. And I was scratching my head
- 32:27because I thinking like, okay I know that he's got an audience,
- 32:30I know people listen to him but like not that A like it's I
- 32:35don't understand where that came from and maybe it was just, he
- 32:38has a big Network, I don't know, but it was it was interesting
- 32:43and that's as a scientific mind and I'm sure you do the same.
- 32:46Like, you first thing you think is okay, how did this happen?
- 32:49How can I sort of try to maybe replicate this?
- 32:52Or is there something specifically I did in my
- 32:55Approach or, or was it the guest specifically, or what?
- 32:58Can I do differently to keep this this upward Trend and it's
- 33:03like I do. So for me, there's just real
- 33:06inconsistency with everything and that that sounds really -
- 33:09but it's not. It's just like there hasn't no
- 33:13pattern as established yet so it's I still see it as like
- 33:16being in the growing stage, really all right?
- 33:18Yeah. Oh yeah, me too, for sure.
- 33:20Although one thing that I've done that I think helped is in
- 33:24every episode before we get into the main interview.
- 33:27I do a segment that I call rewind, what I talk with my
- 33:32current guests about Last week's episode and resting, okay?
- 33:38And I think for some reason people then see like all right,
- 33:44maybe check out that episode after is then and I hope that
- 33:48continues like they then listen to the second episode that.
- 33:52Well, they talked about this week before this, maybe check
- 33:55that check out that as well. But what specifically do you
- 33:57talk about in this segment is? Do you sort of say like yeah
- 34:00like what will happen tonight? I quiz my guess.
- 34:04The episode. So I have like one get one
- 34:06question about one question about the main subject.
- 34:10Then one question about the guests, some personal question,
- 34:15they answered and then something else that was just random
- 34:19throughout the episode. But doesn't this presuppose that
- 34:21they actually watch the episode or yeah.
- 34:25But I know I tell them beforehand, like, is it okay?
- 34:28If I ask you a couple of questions about the last week's
- 34:31episode, it's okay. If you didn't watch it with it's
- 34:33just Get the listeners interested in last week's
- 34:36episode. All right, so that literally
- 34:38most of the time they're just given their off-the-cuff remarks
- 34:41of what they think of the subject.
- 34:42And maybe the person as well, just like, oh, maybe I feel this
- 34:45way all about this. Yeah.
- 34:47All I mean, if they want, I can give them the answers, but most
- 34:51people like, now that that's, we don't like that.
- 34:54That's just, I'll figure it out, you know?
- 34:57And that's, that's really nice. That's a really cool idea, man.
- 35:00And I've heard, obviously, similar things.
- 35:02There's some wrestling Costs that I listened to that do
- 35:06something similar. They have like a, I don't know
- 35:09if they do it anymore, but they had this thing where they had
- 35:10like viewer questions from the prick, like about the previous
- 35:15episode at the beginning of the next episode, and I always
- 35:17thought that was a cool concept. Like, especially if you've got
- 35:19that audience, like when I have a proper audience for this,
- 35:24that's something that I want to do as well when I get some more
- 35:26interaction, like one thing I was thinking about straightaway,
- 35:30particularly, when I was negotiating, these celebrities
- 35:32recently was, oh yeah. Like it'd be good to, you know,
- 35:36ask ask the fans, what they would like to know what
- 35:41questions they would like, for me to ask the guests, but I
- 35:45don't know that I still had a still don't have the audience
- 35:47yet, because the last time I did this, it was for the 50th
- 35:52episode of my podcast. So I did a special with shout,
- 35:55the Dutch deals and we literally just sat down and basically
- 36:02interviewed each other. Because we done like a series of
- 36:08like social media posts on both of our platforms to ask people,
- 36:12like, hey, what would you like to ask us?
- 36:15Let's do a nice Christian. Let's do an Ask Dodge deals, not
- 36:18one person sent in the question. I literally like we had a good
- 36:29time but I was so gutted by that and like that also spelled End
- 36:34of doing those as well because I was like no one's going to send
- 36:37in any questions. There's no, there's no point is
- 36:39just quizzing each other. Exactly.
- 36:41Yeah. It's so difficult to get
- 36:43engagement like that. Yeah.
- 36:46And it's weird because I know that there are people that
- 36:48listen to the show, okay, maybe not like Lo it's, but I know
- 36:52that there are people. So I was really perplexed by
- 36:55that, and, you know, obviously, I'm not going to sit cry about
- 36:57it but, hmm, buzzer, that's a bit of a shame.
- 37:00But, you know, you just gotta keep Truckin, keep trying and
- 37:02hope that maybe in the future, Future will be different, but
- 37:06yeah. Now when I was pretty
- 37:07interesting. Yeah, I do.
- 37:09I totally understand. I, I know the feeling we've all
- 37:14been there. We've all been there.
- 37:17What do you think of the key elements or necessary for a
- 37:20successful podcast? Well, first, you need to find
- 37:26out what, what your audience wants, right?
- 37:30And people say, people say if you're speaking to everyone,
- 37:33you're speaking to no one. I mean, that's something I read
- 37:38like in. Oh, sorry.
- 37:40And I do when I was doing like research and how to start a
- 37:43podcast. It was like, well, you need to
- 37:44find a niche market and I was like, I don't want to do that.
- 37:48Yeah. So I disagree with that fact.
- 37:53You can do about whatever you think is interesting and people
- 37:58will join in if they think the same.
- 38:02So so many people have said that to me, not just about podcasting
- 38:06but YouTube the like, oh, you know, you shouldn't do multi
- 38:09content because, you know, it's there's too many people from
- 38:13coming to your channel from different places and they'll be
- 38:15expecting to see certain stuff and it's like that I'm trying to
- 38:18get people to be like fans of me and my brand.
- 38:21That sounds like egotistical but that's not how it's supposed to
- 38:24be intense. That's exactly the best fun
- 38:27today. Yeah, like what I mean by that
- 38:29is, like, you want people to be interested in use that when you
- 38:32put any content out of any description, they're excited
- 38:35about that. Like, if I don't know, if I go
- 38:37watch much some of my favorite YouTubers, like, I don't know,
- 38:41KSI, for example, right? Sometimes there is stuff that he
- 38:45releases that, I don't want to watch, it's rare, but like there
- 38:48will be like, like okay, what he if he does like this, he does
- 38:51these Leo's once in a blue moon, where it's like the most
- 38:54dangerous sport series or something.
- 38:56Right. And I just don't like those
- 38:58videos because I don't like me, like sports.
- 39:00But everything else he does. I love.
- 39:02And technically, if it was anyone else doing it, I wouldn't
- 39:07sort of be interested than the Jean.
- 39:09Like, I'm not really interested in watching.
- 39:10Try not to laugh challenge has, but because it's him, and
- 39:13because it's the way he does, it is interesting to me.
- 39:17And that's the way that I approach podcasting and YouTube,
- 39:21and Saying it's like, okay, I'm just going to do what I want.
- 39:23Do what I like put it out and you know hope that people join
- 39:28me on this journey and support me, you know what I mean?
- 39:31Exactly. Yeah.
- 39:32And then what I also think is important is you need you need
- 39:37some good audio quality and you need to get the editing done,
- 39:42right? Because if it's if you have like
- 39:45a shitty microphone, like I do right now, sorry for that.
- 39:50Then it's like people will start listening with Susan
- 39:54expectations and then they may get annoyed.
- 39:59If your quality is not that good.
- 40:01I mean, I don't know if that's a fact, but that's something that
- 40:05I can imagine right? I sort of agree and disagree
- 40:08with you at the same time now, sound bizarre, but okay, bear
- 40:12with me. So I agree in the sense that yes
- 40:16especially with the podcast audio quality is probably the
- 40:20most important aspect. Because, you know, especially if
- 40:24not just a video side but the the audio only so you know,
- 40:27that's the only thing that people were interacting with.
- 40:29So if it's poor quality, it might put people off.
- 40:32But with that being said, you know, there's a lot of content
- 40:36creators, icy out there and podcasters who, you know, don't
- 40:40have the good quality stuff. Like, even when I started this
- 40:42podcast, I didn't have a professional Mike.
- 40:44I just had like some cheap thing I bought in Europe, right?
- 40:48It was terrible but I figured, you know what?
- 40:49I just want to start this. I want to do this.
- 40:51Like, I can get a better mic down the line, it will happen
- 40:55and lo and behold it did happen, you know, it happened.
- 40:58Eventually right now I don't want to discourage anyone from
- 41:02starting out with, with cheaper equipment.
- 41:07Yeah. But what I'm saying, though, is
- 41:08that the content? I know, I just said that, the
- 41:11audio aspect might be the important most important thing
- 41:14by actually disagree with that. I think the most important
- 41:17aspect is the content is like, what you're putting out there
- 41:20because people People, people, that support you and I've had
- 41:24the same. I've had people say to me like,
- 41:26oh yeah, I love what you do, but I wish you would, you know, you
- 41:29would do this. And I'm like, I want to like new
- 41:32gaming people say, oh, why don't you do new gaming videos and I
- 41:35might trust me, if I had a gaming PC.
- 41:38Good internet. I would do it.
- 41:40Okay, I would do it but I don't and I don't have the means to do
- 41:44so and I'm trying to put myself in a position where I can.
- 41:47It's just like, that's good. That's kind of what my First
- 41:52point was, if you're, if you are putting out content that your
- 41:56audience is interested in, then that's fine.
- 41:59So that's the first point. I made just need to have good
- 42:05content. That is what is this trash
- 42:09content? That's the lesson.
- 42:11Yep, actually, I think I think it takes time though.
- 42:14Like, I was listening to someone for sure.
- 42:16Absolutely. Like my older episodes earlier
- 42:18this week and I mean I still think that good but like you
- 42:22know I look at them and I'm like I feel much more confident now.
- 42:25I feel like it's much better now but that's that's just growth.
- 42:29That's just how growth works. You start being trash at
- 42:32something and you get better through time.
- 42:34I went to my first episode when I listen back like it's the
- 42:40first time I ever recorded anything.
- 42:43I was very nervous. You know, and you can hear that
- 42:47and then if you listen to the episodes, Put it now.
- 42:50It's like, all right I've done this before.
- 42:52I know what I want to ask. I know what we're going to talk
- 42:55about. So yeah, it's definitely great.
- 42:59That that just goes as well, doesn't it?
- 43:00Like I felt exactly the same because originally I didn't plan
- 43:04for this to be a interview podcast, like I figured like, oh
- 43:07I might be cool to have guests every now and again, but I plan
- 43:10for it to be discussion-based but then I just started getting
- 43:13guests more and more and it developed into what it's become.
- 43:18But yeah, those first. The say, 10, 15 episodes.
- 43:22I was nervous as hell. I was, you know, like I've been
- 43:24bought my 10th episode. I had this this musician from
- 43:29Estonia so basically I'll just quickly explain, I lived in
- 43:32Estonia for three years and I became a big part like a fan of
- 43:36all of the music. They're right.
- 43:38And this particular hero of mine who's a musician though guy
- 43:42called Mark, including has agreed to be on my show and
- 43:47like, for me, I felt like I just hit The jackpot.
- 43:50I was so excited. It was like my 10th episode and
- 43:53this guy's going to end. It didn't look like I was going
- 43:55to happen that it happened last minute and I was like, oh my God
- 43:58and I felt so nervous and so oh yeah, like like scare like
- 44:02panicking. Like oh my God, I hope I don't
- 44:04mess this up and then as soon as we started talking, it was fine.
- 44:08And I sort of just obviously the whole time.
- 44:10I was like, you know, but like I was I okay, just keep it
- 44:13professional. Keep it like what you do all the
- 44:16time they call and it'll be fine.
- 44:19And it was it turned out very good and I was, you know, after
- 44:22that, I sort of realized, like, do you know what you just have
- 44:24to approach every single podcast, like it doesn't matter
- 44:27who the guest is just consistency is key, I think but
- 44:32yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I agree with that.
- 44:35So, let's move it forward. What's it, like, living in the
- 44:39Netherlands? I know that's going to sound
- 44:41like a weird question. You were born and raised there,
- 44:43but like, so let's tell us on the Netherlands.
- 44:45Good. And the bad.
- 44:47You see that? That's always such a difficult
- 44:49question to. Honestly, I know, I know.
- 44:51It's like, what's it like, living in America, right?
- 44:55It's the same. Well, it's not the same, with
- 44:57the same kind of question, but all right, let's try well right
- 45:02now. It's shit.
- 45:03I can tell you that much. Okay, we're ready.
- 45:06We're in lockdown. Okay, let's forget about lot
- 45:09down for a second. Let's say, like, lockdowns not a
- 45:12thing. Like what?
- 45:13I need to get my frustrations out of the way for a second.
- 45:16Do it go for it? Go for it.
- 45:17Yeah, I I used to get a haircut every Two weeks.
- 45:20And now I haven't been able to get a haircut for like three
- 45:23months and my hair is just wild. This is a dude, what we've been
- 45:28shut since or like end of December and let the barbershops
- 45:33don't open till April so I'm like right?
- 45:35Yeah. But all in that then we're not
- 45:38in lockdown. It's a great country and I know
- 45:41that some people, you know, people in other parts of the
- 45:48world's few Europe acid Communist kind of place which
- 45:56are free healthcare, and you give all your money to the
- 45:59government. That's not the case.
- 46:01It's not, it's not true. It's, you know, everyone here
- 46:08makes a good living. If you if you get sick you don't
- 46:13die, you know, and you don't get 100.
- 46:19Of thousands. You don't get thousands of Euros
- 46:22in death, dude, just because she needs to adjust, dude.
- 46:27That's a very underrated Point as one underrated.
- 46:30But like, it's a very good point.
- 46:32Like, I often think about especially, you know, when I
- 46:35started living abroad and then I compared that to living in the
- 46:38UK. I sort of realized how lucky I
- 46:41am to be from here because, you know, things like healthcare.
- 46:45I mean, you take it for granted, you know, like the split is
- 46:49About America. Like I hate I have heard of
- 46:51people. Oh yeah you know it's cheaper
- 46:54for them to for example get a taxi to the hospital then it is
- 46:58to actually get an ambulance because we had around, you know,
- 47:01I like I've heard of instances where people have turned down
- 47:05surgery because they just can't afford it all like that.
- 47:09The doctors wouldn't operate on them because the person didn't
- 47:12have it, they couldn't say. Yeah.
- 47:14You know, I do. I think the differences between
- 47:18the UK and the Alongside very small at least smaller than
- 47:22people might think we're really small body of water away.
- 47:28Yeah. You know what?
- 47:29It's like it. I don't know.
- 47:31I go to university, right? Yeah, you're at work.
- 47:36What are you studying at University?
- 47:39Business management business management.
- 47:43What do you plan to do with that?
- 47:44What's the plan? No idea yet, if I want to, what
- 47:51if possible? I'd like to grow my own
- 47:52business, that I'm currently running, like, to grow it and
- 47:56maybe turn it into something big that I can.
- 48:00I mean I can make a living off of it right now but I don't have
- 48:04a lot of expenses yet and I hope that it keeps growing and you
- 48:09know, it will be something for the future.
- 48:12Yeah. So this is actually real quick
- 48:16so it's a translation agency, I mentioned it a preamble.
- 48:21Yeah. Talk to us a little bit more
- 48:22about this company. Like how did that actually come
- 48:25to be like obviously translating is like a very common thing but
- 48:29like right. How did this happen for you like
- 48:32alright accommodate I was working at Burger King.
- 48:38It was a new job at work there for like a month and then I got
- 48:41my first paycheck and it turned out I didn't quite make what I
- 48:46thought I was making so the very next day I went to my manager.
- 48:52I said I'm quitting. I'm not I'm not getting out of
- 48:54bed for this amount of money, right?
- 48:58Was it a situation where? Like was it an overtime thing?
- 49:02Like you worked a lot a ton of hours and they just didn't pay
- 49:04it or something or no, not really.
- 49:09It was more like I don't even know what happened.
- 49:11Exactly. Was it was a shit show but what
- 49:17what it came down to was they said you would get like bonuses
- 49:21for this and that and you would actually get paid more.
- 49:26Alright, so minimum wage or something.
- 49:30Went up with how old you are like your age.
- 49:33So an eighteen-year-old makes more their seventy-year-old,
- 49:36right? And they said that you wouldn't
- 49:37make as much or how do you say that you would make as much
- 49:44money as as if you were one year all then you actually were
- 49:47right. Okay.
- 49:48So that wasn't true, you didn't get the bonuses and it was just
- 49:53all these kinds of things that didn't really work out.
- 49:57And so I was done with it very quickly, right?
- 50:00Right? And then then I thought to
- 50:02myself, alright I'm Legit I should have before we get to the
- 50:05the translation think just because you a bit about Burger
- 50:08King because I didn't actually know that.
- 50:10Sure. Yeah.
- 50:11Like I know it's very quick in your life, you know.
- 50:14Like I don't know ask the obvious questions because you
- 50:17know I have friends that worked in the food service industry and
- 50:20I know how difficult it can be. I've worked in Hospitality of
- 50:23worked in retail those. So I do know I can relate a
- 50:26little bit but what would what were the kind of Worst things
- 50:30about working at this job, but why did it suck so much?
- 50:33I, it was, it was fun. I had a lot of fun there, but it
- 50:38is, I think, my time is worth more than four Euros an hour,
- 50:44right? If they I first went to to
- 50:49management, I said, well, I'm going to need a race and they
- 50:52were like, yeah, we can't do that.
- 50:54You're 17, you're further a month.
- 50:55We can't give you a raise. I was like, all right.
- 51:00I'll give you my two weeks notice.
- 51:02Yeah, that's really smart as well.
- 51:04I know that all sound like really obvious to a lot people
- 51:07listening but you know, this idea of valuing your time and
- 51:12understanding your worth as far as you know what your time and
- 51:16also your skill sets and everything like that.
- 51:19Like you know, there's so many people either, they don't
- 51:20realize like Yeah, just just the they should be negotiating more,
- 51:26they should be, you know, if a place won't give you what you
- 51:28want, go somewhere else, why stick with that place?
- 51:30That gives you nothing. You know, they're never gonna
- 51:32change their mind. If they say no the first time
- 51:35then they're not going to say yes the second or third time.
- 51:38You know what I mean? Get out of that go somewhere
- 51:40that will give you that money. Exactly.
- 51:42Yeah. And other than that, the job was
- 51:46a lot of fun. Like I had great co-workers when
- 51:49people weren't looking with have water fights in the kitchen.
- 51:54I guess it was all people your age then was it yeah that's
- 51:58awesome and the kids running the show.
- 52:02Yeah it was it was pretty great when your friends come in and
- 52:06you like you make an extra burger and you don't, you don't
- 52:09make them pay for it. You know.
- 52:10Did you get any sort of get me like, crazy customers or
- 52:14anything usual unusual? Yeah, absolutely, people yelling
- 52:18from but from the other side of the council asking where the
- 52:22food is, Is and why it's taking so long?
- 52:24Look, I don't know. Was there any particular
- 52:27experiences that stand out for you?
- 52:29Anything that just like the stock of you?
- 52:31Like, I don't know, particularly crazy customer or something
- 52:34super rude, or we're disgusting or something.
- 52:39Let me think about that. Well, one time I had, this is
- 52:45Lady as she paid in cash. So I gave her her change and she
- 52:52said that I hadn't given her enough to change.
- 52:54Now this was after she had gone back to her table and I don't
- 52:58care some money but I knew for sure that I did the right thing,
- 53:03right? And so she went to my manager
- 53:08and she's like, well, this guy is ripping me off and I was like
- 53:11that's bullshit. So, We went to count because the
- 53:18registers that account how much money goes out and in, right?
- 53:22So we had to check all of the all of the amounts of money that
- 53:26had gotten in there and to eventually the tomb and how much
- 53:30I had given it, right? And it turned out, I was right,
- 53:34of course, right. Yeah.
- 53:37It was this entire force about it.
- 53:39Like, I don't know, a couple of cents 50 cents, or something
- 53:42like that. It was crazy.
- 53:44I don't like people like make such a fuss over such small
- 53:46people, man. For sure, I've had the same
- 53:49thing. I remember one time I was I was
- 53:51working in the supermarket and it was like Christmas time so
- 53:54you'd expect people to be nicer around Christmas, right?
- 53:57Okay. If anything they'll worse at
- 53:58Christmas. But there was this one girl
- 54:00particular guy who came in and He basically, we had like a
- 54:08separate till set up, it was like an extra tool for Christmas
- 54:11time. And yeah, I'm I'm terrible at
- 54:13math. So I always have been just, I'm
- 54:15useless at maths. So I was taking me a while to
- 54:19like work out, the chip. Basically, he gave me more money
- 54:21than what I needed, because he wanted to see if it changed
- 54:24back, right? And that flummox me, I was like,
- 54:27oh crap. And I was trying to work out,
- 54:29and basically, he's just like, why?
- 54:31Why have you not, why have you not giving this money where you
- 54:34were Why is it taking so long? Why are you not giving the money
- 54:36to do? What?
- 54:37I don't understand. Get me a manager now over and
- 54:39like he just I don't know. I had this like sinking feeling.
- 54:43I was like yeah yeah. And you just get people like
- 54:48that all the time because in service it's like another I
- 54:51think they just forget that you're human, you know.
- 54:56Oh yeah. People yelling at you or you're
- 55:00just doing your job, it's like it's such an unreasonable thing
- 55:03to do. and it's like, I feel like there's this like Okay.
- 55:08Like if that was in the street, if that was just like, you take,
- 55:11take it out of context for a second.
- 55:13Yeah, it wouldn't be acceptable, you go at them, right?
- 55:16But all you just wouldn't do that necessarily.
- 55:19But for some reason in the context of a customer service
- 55:22situation, people just seem to, you know, forget about how to
- 55:28treat other human beings and just allow, oh, well, you know,
- 55:31I can treat them like shit. That's fine.
- 55:33And it's like, yeah. What I hate is people get, but
- 55:40there's so many of them. It's like many of the majority
- 55:43of people can maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but like a
- 55:46lot of people, I mean, you know, it's like I've said this before.
- 55:51So sorry everyone, listening. He's heard me say this a million
- 55:53times before, but like, when I made the shift, from from retail
- 55:59jobs to like you, no more Hospitality based stuff when I
- 56:02was at Uni, I remember, Thinking like how easy I'd had it at the
- 56:07supermarket because I used to complain years ago below.
- 56:10This heard this so much but I'd had it pretty pretty easy there.
- 56:14And then when I started serving people waiting tables bartending
- 56:18delivering coffee, you know serving like 500 people and
- 56:22middle of summer and it's boiling and you're understaffed
- 56:24and like you just see the worst side of the people and sand like
- 56:29even people who are sitting in the sunshine, who should be
- 56:33enjoying their time, We'll find stuff to complain about and
- 56:37we'll just be miserable and you're like I mean, because it's
- 56:41the difference between working out when people actually have a
- 56:45reasonable reason to actually complain or if they're just
- 56:50malcontents which I find is a lot of people in.
- 56:54It's a lot. Yeah.
- 56:55It's like you nothing will make them happy.
- 56:57Then of course there were also a lot of very nice people.
- 57:01People who are very sure. Fred Leon who make a
- 57:03conversation like Having a good day.
- 57:06What's it like working here? Like I hope you have a good day
- 57:08as well. Also, what surprised me is, how
- 57:14many people give their phone number to the guy behind the
- 57:18counter at Burger King? I gotta go.
- 57:22I had a couple of I was 17, right?
- 57:25Well, goes goes, yeah, I just, yeah, I had a couple of girls,
- 57:29just slip me their number on the receipt, all right.
- 57:36It must be the voice. Yeah, I bet I bet it's not, you
- 57:39know, well they might what accent is my accent?
- 57:42Is this noise in Dutch? I have I have a Southern accent
- 57:46which most people look down upon but it's fine.
- 57:49You never know man, you never know what the ladies like, you'd
- 57:52be surprised you'd be my guess when I hear my voice, I just
- 57:56want to, you know, end it all. But apparently some women over
- 58:00the years have been like, I like your voice.
- 58:01And I'm like, really what you like the sound of cats being And
- 58:05strangled, I don't understand like you have a nice voice we
- 58:09can say I want that wasn't me fishing for compliments by the
- 58:11way. That's just how I feel.
- 58:14I genuinely feel that way. Very pretty.
- 58:19No but it's like you know especially when you have to
- 58:21listen to yourself constantly when you're doing editing or
- 58:24costliest. I I can't hear myself talking
- 58:33Dutch but in It's fine. If I hit myself recorded in
- 58:38Dutch like stuff at that, that brings me walking.
- 58:43That brings me to another question and we'll get back to
- 58:45the translation agency stuff. Oh yeah, sure.
- 58:47Just one more question. Don't worry.
- 58:50It's not Burger King related. What was the reason for you
- 58:53actually deciding to do the podcast in English?
- 58:56Because this is something that I found a lot of podcast is that
- 58:59I've interviewed from Europe, have tended to do and don't get
- 59:03me wrong, like, I understand the appeal, Eel.
- 59:05And the the logic that of sense that it makes like, obviously
- 59:09I'm going to do an English or have more International appeal
- 59:12and stuff, but like one thing that always confuses me is like,
- 59:15why not have like say to you completely different podcast,
- 59:18one in, say Dutch one in English or or have a mixture or maybe
- 59:23even just only in Dutch. Like, what what was the decision
- 59:25making process behind only doing it in English?
- 59:29Well, first of all, like you said, there are so many more
- 59:33people who speak English. Advantage.
- 59:38And besides that, the thing I want to do is I want to have
- 59:42experts on with knowledge on a certain topic and I mean I'm
- 59:48sure I can find someone who plays Cooling and then Island
- 59:53somewhere but it's not going to be a world champion, right?
- 59:57And so the guess that I'm looking for there, they all
- 1:00:00speak English as well for the most part, so that was a factor.
- 1:00:05Then, I don't know. I feel like my level of any, my
- 1:00:08level of English is good enough to actually have a conversation
- 1:00:12in English with someone and have it.
- 1:00:13Make sense and I just feel comfortable speaking English.
- 1:00:19And I don't know, I never really even really considered doing a
- 1:00:22podcast in Dutch. I'm not sure.
- 1:00:24Do you not think it potentially alienate people who might be
- 1:00:29interested in your podcast, in your home country that don't
- 1:00:32necessarily speak it? Now, I know that's going to
- 1:00:34sound Bit dumb to. A lot of people listening to be
- 1:00:36like, well, surely most Dutch people speak English, but you'd
- 1:00:40be surprised that when I lived in Estonia, I remember there was
- 1:00:43a lot of people. I'd me sometimes, even in the
- 1:00:46city wouldn't speak English. It was normally older
- 1:00:49generations and that made sense, historically and stuff.
- 1:00:52But like, even sometimes younger people, you know, I remember me
- 1:00:55and young people that didn't speak English or only spoke a
- 1:00:57lot, and it made me think a lot about this.
- 1:00:59So, you know, need you ever think about that?
- 1:01:03Or, I mean, that could be b-but. The biggest part of my audience
- 1:01:09is from the United States, look right now, and then there's the
- 1:01:14Netherlands and then there's India.
- 1:01:17It's So Random, isn't it is the same for me?
- 1:01:19It's like, 50. Last time.
- 1:01:20I looked is like, 54 percent us and then like 20% English, like
- 1:01:26my people hate me. Illinois interests.
- 1:01:28Yeah, fine. I'll go to America.
- 1:01:32They'll appreciate me, right? It's funny how that split goes
- 1:01:36because sometimes you look at those stats and for those who
- 1:01:40don't use podcast to want to get into podcasts, I highly
- 1:01:43recommend checking out anchor because it gives you a really
- 1:01:45cool kind of breakdown of the analytics as far as like country
- 1:01:49by country is concerned. And I found some interesting
- 1:01:51statistics, they're like of like particular people from
- 1:01:55particular countries that listen to me and I might really like
- 1:01:57why do people from their listen to me?
- 1:02:00Like, right that's random said I have this this one guy in the
- 1:02:05ceremony. South Korea.
- 1:02:06We just listened to all my episodes.
- 1:02:08Oh, this is like the numbers. Don't go up to South Korea.
- 1:02:12It's just that one guy, I figure.
- 1:02:14This is a shout out to that guy if you by any chance ever finds
- 1:02:19this episode, I do to you. That's all he should be.
- 1:02:24For sure, will be for sure. Okay, man.
- 1:02:28Yeah, let's let's bring it back to the translation translation.
- 1:02:31All right, now because I did cut you off, but I wanted to push
- 1:02:34the more, the Burger King. For a little bit.
- 1:02:36So yeah, it's a translation agency that you've set up.
- 1:02:41Now I find this interesting because There are a lot of
- 1:02:45pretty professional translators that can't speak pans
- 1:02:49professional translators out there who tend to sort of do
- 1:02:53work on a freelance basis. So just project-by-project, what
- 1:02:56actually prompted you to set up an entire agency, as opposed to
- 1:02:59just doing it freelance. All right, so I started out as a
- 1:03:02freelancer and I was hired by this, by these companies, who
- 1:03:07then like, they get these big assignments and they cut them up
- 1:03:10and divide them between Freelancers.
- 1:03:14But, you know, I went to think about it and I was like, hmm.
- 1:03:19All these guys are doing is dividing these assignments.
- 1:03:24I could do that, right? And so I was like, wow!
- 1:03:28What the hell? I'm just going to try it and I
- 1:03:30set up the agency and I was like, if it doesn't work, it
- 1:03:34doesn't work. And I'll go back to freelancing
- 1:03:36if it works. I can still continue freelancing
- 1:03:39if I want but I have this on the side.
- 1:03:43And that second scenario is the case right now where I do some
- 1:03:50assignments that I give to other people and then on the side I
- 1:03:56can still do my own projects that I'm working on.
- 1:04:03So yeah, that's kind of how that happens in like what's your
- 1:04:06process like? As far as, you know, approaching
- 1:04:09the translation of documents and text and stuff.
- 1:04:14Well it's quite simple actually. Just have to look at the.
- 1:04:18You just look at the documents and then you you see if there
- 1:04:22are any special things that you have to take into account for
- 1:04:26that, specific document like vocabulary.
- 1:04:31So, whatever, usually the companies sent these, like if
- 1:04:36there are a lot of abbreviations, usually get like
- 1:04:39a sheet that says what they all mean.
- 1:04:43And that it's just sit down and do it.
- 1:04:47But if I, but now the reason I ask is because like, sometimes
- 1:04:50when you're when you're translating from from language
- 1:04:52to language, like something is on even translatable.
- 1:04:56Sometimes it's quite specific to a particular language or
- 1:04:58culture. That's something I learned when
- 1:05:00I was in Estonia that even to this day like I could I could
- 1:05:05relate to other Estonian have been like, yeah, I get that but
- 1:05:07like if I try to explain it to anyone that has never been
- 1:05:10there, it's like Are you just going to be there and to get it?
- 1:05:14It's right thing. It just it's like that, you know
- 1:05:18that's that's funny. When you're translating
- 1:05:20something from English to Dutch, right?
- 1:05:23You run into that a lot because Dutch they use a lot of English,
- 1:05:29right words. And yeah, well that's the end of
- 1:05:35my sentence basically but that's the end of that chapter.
- 1:05:40So, for example, if I have to translate the if someone said
- 1:05:45you have to think out of the box like out of the box, we just say
- 1:05:52out-of-the-box danken. And then thinking is thinking,
- 1:05:55yeah, it's I know, I know what you mean like especially like I
- 1:06:00have a flatmate for instance who's Portuguese, doesn't speak
- 1:06:03any English. He's learning, but he's it's
- 1:06:06hard for him. He's only recently come to the
- 1:06:07UK and Sometimes I'll just say you know like a saying that I
- 1:06:15think nothing got off right and then he'll ask me all, what does
- 1:06:18that mean? And then I'm like oh how do I
- 1:06:21explain that like because again it comes back to what I said
- 1:06:24before about like some things are specific or he's just an
- 1:06:28expression but like people know exactly what you mean straight
- 1:06:31away. But it's very difficult to
- 1:06:33explain it because it's more of like a way of summing up a
- 1:06:36feeling or a situation or like a metaphor for something and it's
- 1:06:41like How what? Why do I even start, right?
- 1:06:46Yeah, so it's really like it. Hey, I have an idea.
- 1:06:50If you're interested, I was a guest on a podcast.
- 1:06:54Some time ago was a comedy podcast and we did a segment,
- 1:07:00but I read out some Dutch words and I have them guess what?
- 1:07:05They meet. So I can, I can see if I still
- 1:07:07have a file and I can it can see if you what you Like see how
- 1:07:12good you are in Dutch speaking Dutch or just figure.
- 1:07:15I don't know if you can figure out what they mean, I'll give it
- 1:07:19a go. I mean hosting, I know a little
- 1:07:22bit too Duchess, probably German, but that's not really
- 1:07:27nice. It's kind of similar but not its
- 1:07:31Similar you, maybe it will be an advantage.
- 1:07:38This would be interested to see if the most I know how it's a
- 1:07:44and Duchess there's this song by a guy called Lil Kleine and I
- 1:07:49know like like one verse from that song but I don't really
- 1:07:54know what I mean. I'm conducts.
- 1:07:57Yeah I think it is. It's a bit he's like yeah it's
- 1:08:00like as a bitch field didn't eat today.
- 1:08:02Beloved in done her, go ahead and Lead are laying down a dunk
- 1:08:06India's. You get done let's go and do
- 1:08:09something like that. Yeah yep it's I can translate it
- 1:08:16for you. He says if you bitch wants to
- 1:08:21hang out it's not a problem. I will go there because I have
- 1:08:25booze and drugs. That's us.
- 1:08:29Always says and then it just repeats that over and oh that's
- 1:08:32just for us. Straight to the point, isn't it?
- 1:08:34Yeah. Yep.
- 1:08:37Yep. Good stuff.
- 1:08:38Alright or have actually found the file still had it.
- 1:08:41Okay. So so just as a warm-up round,
- 1:08:48let's let's do this one. All right, get in the car and
- 1:08:51we'll stop talked for guiding Spirits.
- 1:08:53I'm Hayden. What say that again slower?
- 1:09:01Didn't look on walls up to for guidance Vex.
- 1:09:04I'm here. It's one word, it's one word.
- 1:09:11Yeah, is it something to do with kids?
- 1:09:16Yeah. It's the when there's a
- 1:09:18carnivals parade for children. Oh yeah, two preparations.
- 1:09:23And that's what that word means because I heard Kindler.
- 1:09:26Now, I know in German. Yeah, Quinta sister is right
- 1:09:33cool. And so, in Dutch, you can, you
- 1:09:35can basically just keep adding nouns and it will still be one
- 1:09:40boot. That's ridiculous.
- 1:09:44That is ridiculous. Yeah, All right.
- 1:09:46All right. We'll we'll do one.
- 1:09:48I have some multiple choice once if you want.
- 1:09:50Sure. Okay, let's find next one is
- 1:09:55kick it. This is it a the Frog.
- 1:09:59Be the soccer player will see, cauliflower.
- 1:10:05Say again. Kika.
- 1:10:11Is it cauliflower? Now it's a frog.
- 1:10:17I knew it wasn't a soccer bag says that NASA trick, testator
- 1:10:20it. Well, it was too obvious, right?
- 1:10:22Yeah. Okay.
- 1:10:28All right. All right.
- 1:10:29We'll do one more or maybe more for one is fine.
- 1:10:34Spin that guys. Is it a pigeon?
- 1:10:38Be peanut butter will see a plumber?
- 1:10:42Say the word again. Pin that gas plumber.
- 1:10:56No, it's peanut butter. It literally means peanut
- 1:10:59cheese. Peanut, she sounds wrong.
- 1:11:07So, yeah, that's the crazy language that we call Dutch that
- 1:11:11Dutch is cooled Dutch messes with my head, man, because it's
- 1:11:14like, it sounds like to me, it sounds like German meet English
- 1:11:21but not because it's his own language.
- 1:11:26This is my head so much and danish is the same as well.
- 1:11:31Danish sounds weird in my head, it's Scandinavian languages are
- 1:11:36very similar to like Dutch and German.
- 1:11:39But I actually I actually learned Swedish in like a couple
- 1:11:43of months because was just so similar to touch everything in
- 1:11:47every aspect. Wow.
- 1:11:49I saw I didn't know that they were shared and in some straight
- 1:11:53paths and there probably are. Some shape or form and then do
- 1:11:57they have a lot of shared words, or was it just similar-sounding
- 1:11:59or something? No it.
- 1:12:02Yeah, similar-sounding. But then I also already knew
- 1:12:07German, right? And so some parts were similar
- 1:12:11to Dutch and some parts were similar to the German and you
- 1:12:13just picked up very quickly because it's all the same
- 1:12:16language, family. Cool.
- 1:12:20Yeah. Let's move it forward, right?
- 1:12:23Who do you draw inspiration from Christian Reeves.
- 1:12:29Ha ha ha, seriously. My favorite comedian actually?
- 1:12:38Jim Jeffries is, I don't know if you've ever heard of him.
- 1:12:43See the guy that does the Puppeteer in no?
- 1:12:47That's Jeff Dunham, I think. Okay, then.
- 1:12:50I don't know who this guy is. This is an Australian comedian.
- 1:12:56Oh, hang on. Is he the guy that does like
- 1:12:58really like how can I put this? Risk a human.
- 1:13:05Let's put it that way. I keep famous.
- 1:13:08You did a famous famously, did a joke about Islam.
- 1:13:10That was pretty brutal or something, I'm not sure about
- 1:13:14that. He is, he is famous for his
- 1:13:17routine on gun control. Hmm.
- 1:13:19I think I think I know the guy you're on about, right?
- 1:13:23And you still super funny but then then we hear him talk about
- 1:13:27live and the things he has gone through like substance abuse.
- 1:13:31And Fresh and things. Like he's very open about that.
- 1:13:36I think all around. He's just a very inspiring guy
- 1:13:39because he, he copes using comedy and that's great.
- 1:13:45Is that I think people should laugh more.
- 1:13:47Is that something that you do as well?
- 1:13:49Do you use comedy as a sort of way of therapy or two?
- 1:13:52Oh sure. Yeah, went up, like, when I get
- 1:13:57uncomfortable somewhere, I just start trying to be funny or I
- 1:14:02just start laughing just to get out of the situation.
- 1:14:07It's a defense mechanism, almost.
- 1:14:09It's not, it's not bad wave. Yeah, that it's kind of similar
- 1:14:12in the UK actually, there's this joke that like whenever you
- 1:14:15first meet another Englishman, like, you know it's the first to
- 1:14:19crack a joke, you know? I mean like break the tension
- 1:14:21break, the ice sort of speak it. Sort of thing is it's a weird
- 1:14:24thing that we always try to make each other laugh but it's like
- 1:14:27that's how I don't know. We at least feel comfortable
- 1:14:30around each other is by laughing like you.
- 1:14:32It's a good way of just making everyone feel at ease or
- 1:14:35suppose, right? Yeah, cool, man.
- 1:14:39Cool, cool. So, this is a bit of a deeper
- 1:14:43question, but I've been asking my guests, this lately, and it
- 1:14:46always gets a unique response. What is the biggest life lesson
- 1:14:51that you've learned so far? That's that's quite a lot to
- 1:15:00just lay down and someone man. It's well you're not the first
- 1:15:04you won't be the last so all right and also most people react
- 1:15:08that way as well go. Why do I begin exactly what I
- 1:15:14would do as well as exist? I would be life lesson.
- 1:15:23Maybe something that you live by specific is unique to your life.
- 1:15:29I'm thinking I'm thinking I wasn't prepared.
- 1:15:32I thought we were just having fun.
- 1:15:35No. The last lesson that I've
- 1:15:40learned is just be honest, right?
- 1:15:45If you don't like something, you can you should say is if I don't
- 1:15:51know, there's just so many situations in my life where I've
- 1:15:56talked, like just a simple white lie, you know, we're looking
- 1:16:00back. I think like, should've just
- 1:16:02been honest, we've been much easier.
- 1:16:06I think that goes for a lot of people because sometimes it's
- 1:16:09easier, not to say something or not to say what's on your mind,
- 1:16:12but it never works out in the long term.
- 1:16:14Yeah. And so, if you want to find
- 1:16:17long-term solutions to problems or you have issues with someone
- 1:16:21else, just communicate and be honest with each other.
- 1:16:26Yeah, couldn't agree more moment.
- 1:16:28Yeah, a lot of the time, I think it comes down to these simple
- 1:16:30things as well, you know, just you know in my life.
- 1:16:34It's It's always been that case I've got since I decided to just
- 1:16:38be 100% true for in my own life, it's it has been a lot easier.
- 1:16:43Like sometimes you will have people who can't face the truth
- 1:16:47or who were like, you know, they don't like hearing it but it's
- 1:16:52like that's their problem at the end of the day like yeah, truth
- 1:16:56and honesty in my opinion is a sign of respect.
- 1:16:59It's a sign of like you know you're you're trying to say to
- 1:17:02that person. Like, you know, I will tell you
- 1:17:05The truth regardless of whether it's bad or not, you know.
- 1:17:08And that's the problem that people don't want to.
- 1:17:11People worry. I think it's to comes down to
- 1:17:13judgment people. Worried what other people will
- 1:17:15think of them if they tell the truth and it's like that is very
- 1:17:18accurate. Yeah, you know, no one's
- 1:17:20perfect. It's I don't know where this
- 1:17:22this idea of perfection came from but you know, I mean we've
- 1:17:28all messed up like best thing you can do is just be honest
- 1:17:32about it owner. Absolutely.
- 1:17:33Yeah. And then for me, I would rather
- 1:17:36be upset by the truth and comforted by a lie and that's
- 1:17:40kind of a cliché A expression. But it's so true.
- 1:17:44This is true. I mean because and especially if
- 1:17:46you know that it's a liar as well.
- 1:17:48You just try to live by Ally it's like it's not gonna happen
- 1:17:52man. Like you got to face reality
- 1:17:53sooner or later. Yeah.
- 1:17:57Okay. As we draw things for it to a
- 1:17:59close for today. I just want to ask you one final
- 1:18:01question. All right.
- 1:18:03Do you have any upcoming projects or maybe some final
- 1:18:05thoughts that you'd like to share with us?
- 1:18:12You know, I don't have any any new project that I'm working on
- 1:18:16but I'm planning on just keep growing the podcast and keep
- 1:18:21working on that and then my business that's mostly it's so I
