- 0:01His lucky day started with a hole in his roof.
- 0:04There's a story behind that. This is your daily message from
- 0:07Chad #1129 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:11yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:13you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:16And this message is dedicated to Jason Viar.
- 0:18Here's the upgrade. When something crashes into your
- 0:21life, you see the damage. But upgraded thinking asked what
- 0:24the impact delivered. Here's the story.
- 0:28On July 16th, 2024, a home owner in Hillsborough, NJ heard a
- 0:32crash upstairs. There was a hole in the master
- 0:35bedroom ceiling, black fragments on the bed, dust on the carpet,
- 0:39the smell of sulfur in the air. A rock had ridden in from the
- 0:42asteroid belt and come through his roof at 32,000 mph.
- 0:46The Sonic boom was felt in New York City, 48 miles away.
- 0:50People in five states saw the fireball.
- 0:53Most of us would call that a disaster, an insurance claim the
- 0:56day everything went wrong. Most people run their whole
- 0:59lives on one equation. E equals O event equals outcome.
- 1:04Something bad happens, so a bad outcome follows.
- 1:08A wrecked bedroom equals a ruined year.
- 1:11Well, Jack Canfield upgraded the math like this.
- 1:14E plus R = O Event plus response equals outcome.
- 1:19You have agency control in the R, your response.
- 1:25The Stoics go one step deeper. Hiding between the event and the
- 1:29response is a judgement, so the equation is E plus J plus r = O.
- 1:36Before you respond to anything, you decide what it means.
- 1:39Marcus really has said it this way.
- 1:41If any external thing causes you distress, it's not the thing
- 1:44itself that troubles you, but your own judgment about it.
- 1:48And this you have the power to eliminate right now.
- 1:51I'll repeat that if any external thing causes you distress, it's
- 1:55not the thing itself that troubles you, but your own
- 1:58judgement about it. And this you have the power to
- 2:01eliminate right now. Watch the equation work.
- 2:05Think about this event with the meteorite.
- 2:07A rock wrecks the bedroom. The judgement the homeowner
- 2:10made. This is not wreckage.
- 2:12This might be worth something. The response that followed from
- 2:15that judgment, he got disposable gloves, aluminum foil, glass
- 2:19jars. He preserved the fragments like
- 2:22evidence. The outcome?
- 2:24Well, now, two years later, scientists from NASA and SETI
- 2:28Institute published their findings in Science Advances.
- 2:31The rock now named Hillsborough is one of the rarest meteorites
- 2:36ever recorded, soaked in ancient brines and carrying amino acids,
- 2:40the building blocks of life. NASA's Mike Zielinski said
- 2:44thanks to the homeowners quick reaction, these are the most
- 2:47pristine meteorites of this kind we know of.
- 2:51Same event, different judgement. The whole equation changes.
- 2:56Another home owner sweeps those fragments into the trash and
- 2:58files an insurance claim. Same rock, same hole.
- 3:02The event didn't determine the outcome.
- 3:04That judgement did. That's why Viktor Frankel says
- 3:07freedom lives in the gap between stimulus and response.
- 3:10It's not avoiding the stimulus. In the gap where you choose what
- 3:14it means, something will crash into your life.
- 3:19Not maybe will. You can't control the event.
- 3:23You control the judgement, and the judgement drives the
- 3:26response and the response rights the outcome.
- 3:30The event doesn't decide the outcome.
- 3:33You do a diagnosis, A rejection, a loss, a phone call.
- 3:38The question is not whether you get hit.
- 3:41The question is whether you treat the wreckage like garbage
- 3:43or like a gift. The better story to tell
- 3:46yourself is this impact is carrying a gift.
- 3:51Preserve the fragments. Slow down before you react.
- 3:55Don't let the sulfur smell of the first day convince you
- 3:57nothing good landed. Some of what crashes into you
- 4:00traveled a long way to get here and it may take two years before
- 4:04you find out what it is carrying.
- 4:07Tell me a story of a crash that turned out to be a delivery to
- 4:10from chad.smith@gmail.com. Send someone to text and ask
- 4:14them what hit you. That turned out to be a gift.
