- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Gun Sub Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: Tristan, we are winners of football.
- 0:52SPEAKER_02: This is the best team I've ever seen.
- 0:54SPEAKER_03: As an undefeated, uh fan of an undefeated team, I just I'm here for one reason and one reason only, and that's to tell you to play the song.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: Oh, we're gonna play the song.
- 1:17SPEAKER_04: The Texas Tech Red Raiders ride again.
- 1:23SPEAKER_03: It has been a good long while since we've heard that glorious tune.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, and if you are new to Talkin' Tech Pod, we are going to play the great Red Raider coming at you for every dub the Red Raiders get this football season.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's a glorious song, it's uh old school, it's fantastic, and it means Texas Tech won.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: Your Red Raiders are undefeated.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: One and oh, we have defeated the Houston Cougars at NRG Stadium.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech wins 38 to 21.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, we were there, we had a great time.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: Uh, what a what a game from Texas Tech.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:57SPEAKER_03: It was totally worth driving down to Houston and buying overpriced sodas at the concession stand.
- 2:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, and man, what a great way to kick in the season! A great win over a solid team, um, especially one that's our future conference rival here.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: So it's good to go ahead and remind them what's what.
- 2:15SPEAKER_03: And uh, I'm just so glad of the way our team responded to adversity.
- 2:20SPEAKER_03: It's been a while since we've seen that out of a football team, uh, but very happy with the outcome.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:26SPEAKER_02: And I said what a game.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: Really, it was what a second half from Texas Tech.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh, just about as good as they could have played in that second half after a very poor start to say the least.
- 2:36SPEAKER_02: Um, a lot of Red Raider fans were down in the dumps at halftime, down 21 to seven.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: But um, man, uh, you know, I don't toot my own horn often.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: I really don't.
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, but I kept the faith.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: I really did not think that that was how Texas Tech was gonna play the rest of the game after that first half.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: I just thought we didn't have the ball a lot, a lot of things went wrong.
- 2:59SPEAKER_02: It was it was just mistakes made by individual players.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, and and really, I just I I didn't think we were gonna go 31 unanswered points in the second half, but I did think we were gonna pull this out.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: And I had faith in the coaching staff.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: No, you're totally right, man.
- 3:17SPEAKER_03: You held the line the whole first half.
- 3:19SPEAKER_03: You said, hey, we have a whole nother half to play.
- 3:22SPEAKER_03: So I do appreciate you keeping that optimism the whole entire time.
- 3:26SPEAKER_03: Um, because the first half went about as wrong as it could have for a game one.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: And obviously, we do have to remember that this was game number Uno on the season.
- 3:36SPEAKER_03: So there's going to be mistakes that happen, but you know, not a ton of it was on Texas Tech.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: I think U of H did play a very smart first quarter.
- 3:46SPEAKER_03: Um, the way they played aggressively paid off for them.
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: Um, but unfortunately, they just couldn't keep that momentum going for the Cougars.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: And to our benefit, we were able to respond later.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, they started off just about as good as they could have been.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, first touchdown drive, they had two uh Texas Tech had two third down stops in that first drive.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: So we played good defense.
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: It's just Dana Holgerson was out for blood in that first quarter and went for it on a couple fourth downs.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, went for a couple QB sneaks there once they got closer to the goal line.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: And then surprise onside kick, first kick of the season.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: He goes onside, kicks it to JJ Sparkman, who is an inexperienced player right there.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: He was not expecting it.
- 4:27SPEAKER_02: Nobody in the whole entire stadium was expecting it.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: So credit to Dana Holgerson uh for them taking that quick lead.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: But after that, I mean, talk about adjustments, man.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh, we had we had some some good things go on in that first half.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Taj Brooks broke off for that big run.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: Uh, Eric Ezukama had that 50 plus yard gain uh that almost scored on it, and then Xavier White fumbled.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, but you know, it really wasn't as bad.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: We did not get the ball until two minutes left in the first quarter.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: That was the first offensive play we ran, was 213 left in the first quarter.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: Uh, I mean, uh, Houston just held it and they did a lot right in that first quarter.
- 5:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, time of possession was definitely favoring the Cougars in the first half.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: That's why it really felt like we hadn't touched the ball in forever because it was true.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: Uh, so we couldn't see our offense just light it up.
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: And unfortunately, we did make those uh few mistakes.
- 5:22SPEAKER_03: Um, but it's like you said at the top of the hour here, is it was the tail of the second half.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: And I'm very, very proud of the way that both our coaches and our players responded.
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: Um, because it felt like in the past, this was it, this was a team that would have buckled.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, this was a team that would have just stuck, stuck with what they were doing, even if it wasn't working, especially on offense.
- 5:43SPEAKER_03: Um, and perhaps we wouldn't have pulled this out had this been last season, even.
- 5:48SPEAKER_03: So I like the way that uh Matt Wells got his team ready in the second half because boy, did we come out and our defense really was the story in the second half.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm glad you said that.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: The defense, I mean, to shut out Houston for the entire second half is unbelievable.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: We had three interceptions in the second half alone.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: Uh and this was really the turning point was at the nine third from the 9.13 mark of the third quarter to the 723 mark.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: We had Erica Zukama with the 32-yard gain where he broke at least five tackles on that play.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: Uh Tyler Shuck, eight-yard rushing touchdown, Tony Bradford sack, and then Rico Jeppers finished her off with the pick six right there to tie it at 21.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: That all happened in that two-minute span, uh, that really flipped the game for us.
- 6:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was just uh terrific to see us fight back like that so early into that half and give us some give us life and give the fans life.
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: And then from there we just took off and ran.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: For sure, man.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: It was really cool to watch uh this defense that we had a lot of expectations for come out and show it.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: Um, and I really liked even seeing that uh some of our our players that were perhaps a little disappointing last year, like Eric Monroe came out and had a big game.
- 6:57SPEAKER_03: He did, he really did.
- 6:58SPEAKER_03: It was cool to see some uh some of our new players like Reggie Pearson come out and just dominate.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: Like we were saying, we were excited, excited for this Wisconsin boy to come and play some uh defense of the Big 12.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: And man, did they show out?
- 7:10SPEAKER_03: I the defense were the stars on a team that's famously known for the offense.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, talk about Reggie Pearson.
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: He came out at the first interception of the season.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, I was I was high on this guy.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: You and me were both high on this guy coming in from Wisconsin, and he goes and makes a terrific grab.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, one of the best interceptions we've seen at tech in a long time, in terms of just making a football play, making an elite turnaround, going grabbing the ball over the wide receiver.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, awesome stuff from him.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: Eric Monroe, like you mentioned, with the diving grab off the tip pass interception.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: Rico with his first interception, pick six.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then I think Adrian Fry was the fourth interception on the day.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, a lot of good stuff from our defense.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: Colin Schooler even had 10 total tackles, led the team.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: Um, just just really awesome from our defense.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Keith Patterson knew what to do with everybody.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: Everybody from the defensive line.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: We finally got some guys to the quarterback as well.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Tony Bradford had a sack or two, Jalen Hutchings.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: We were all we were getting to the quarterback there in the second half.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: Four picks, man.
- 8:16SPEAKER_03: We picks tune off four times and talk about winning the turnover battle because we we did that, we kept the pressure on him the whole time and made him force some uh some poor mistakes.
- 8:26SPEAKER_03: So, and dude, love that Rico Jeffers pick six because I think that was the backbreaker of the game.
- 8:31SPEAKER_03: Like, that's whenever uh we were like, All right, Houston, the game's over at this point because that tied the game, took the win out of Houston's sales because from there they don't score a single point, and we just go on and do 31 unanswered points.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I mean to add off a guy we haven't talked about yet, Taj Brooks coming out here, running back, coming in for the injured Siroderick Thompson, who did not end up playing this game.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: Um, what did he have?
- 8:56SPEAKER_02: He had uh Taj Brooks had 15 rushing rushes for 134 yards, two touchdowns on the day.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, coming in in his he was a true freshman last year, so he's a sophomore this year coming in, uh being immediately impactful, breaking off for two huge touchdowns throughout this game.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, phenomenal performance from him.
- 9:16SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 9:17SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm I'm glad to see this running back room break out like we thought they would.
- 9:21SPEAKER_03: Uh, as you said before, this is the section you're most excited about, and they really came out and showed it, especially in Sir Roderick's absence.
- 9:29SPEAKER_03: So that it wasn't felt in that rushing game at all.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: Um, because that just shows the depth we have.
- 9:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I mean, even Xavier White, he fumbled in the first half.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: That was a bad play, but he did catch a touchdown from Tyler Shuck uh this game too.
- 9:42SPEAKER_02: So uh even if we're missing guys, even if we're missing Sir Roderick Thompson, we have guys to fill that role and be awesome.
- 9:49SPEAKER_02: That's why I was so high on this running back unit.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: But uh, and then of course Eric Azukama, seven receptions, 179 yards.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: He played the part.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, he's one of the best wide receivers in the Big 12, one of the best wide receivers in the country.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: Uh, and he showed it.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: He the some of these plays he was making, I mean, it really looked like an NFL wide receiver playing against college kids.
- 10:11SPEAKER_02: It it really did.
- 10:12SPEAKER_02: He was unbelievable.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: Hey, he isn't a class of his own.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: You can definitely see why this guy got the lion share of the receiving yards.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: So it's it's no surprise with this guy's ability.
- 10:21SPEAKER_03: This is a guy that we were saying is gonna be an all Big 12 player.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: Uh, he he has real all-American potential.
- 10:26SPEAKER_03: Um, and dude, it it really looks like we have an awesome uh chemistry that we were talking about before between Tyler Shuck and uh Eric Yazukama because Tyler just got a Tyler just has to throw it in his general direction, and Ezekama is probably gonna come up with it.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: So, and and Tyler has got a pretty accurate ball as well that we got to see for the first time in the Red Rider uniform.
- 10:47SPEAKER_03: Um, so it was just really exciting to see this brand new brand of uh Textech offense take the field.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, man, it really was.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: Uh Tyler Shuck looked uh confident back there.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: He looked very he knew what he was doing, uh, decisive, made the right throws.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: Um, he didn't he didn't show a ton in the long ball, he didn't throw a ton down the field.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, but you know, we made it work.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: There were a few.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: I think easy had a uh had an offensive interference uh call on one of those that he caught.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: It was like a 30 or 40 yard reception.
- 11:18SPEAKER_02: Uh and we're gonna see more of that as the season goes.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: I'm sure first game, we're kind of getting uh our feet under us and uh you know, making as many easy, quick decisions and just gaining the yardage.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: And so, and Taj Brooks taking off for what he did on those long runs.
- 11:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, he really, you know, he he left uh he did enough of the work so Tyler Shuck didn't have to, you know.
- 11:40SPEAKER_03: For sure, man.
- 11:41SPEAKER_03: It's it's good to see Tyler Shuck look comfortable there because everyone's worry and everyone's criticism from him at Oregon was he's kind of losing it mentally, you know.
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: He wasn't he was losing his confidence mentally because uh obviously, if you're being recorded re-recruited to be the starting quarterback at Oregon, you got you got some good stuff, so we really got to see it.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: I'm glad that he didn't have to do too much, like you were saying.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: Um, it was a very balanced game, you know, it wasn't exactly just throwing it all over the field.
- 12:07SPEAKER_03: We uh we had Tosh Brooks running it at down the throats as well.
- 12:10SPEAKER_03: So it's good to see that we don't have to rely on him completely, but it's good to see that he's definitely a captain on the field when it comes to uh piloting this offense.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: So uh great performances all around from our red raiders.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: Um, let's talk about some former Red Raiders.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, this was hilarious to me.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: Uh, all the cougars that were former Red Raiders, uh, Keyshawn Carter.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: Let's let's roll down the list here of how they contributed to this game because there was a lot of talk prior to on social medias.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Um, Keyshawn Carter, one reception for nine yards and a crucial third down drop.
- 12:46SPEAKER_02: Um, Tazan Henry, four catches for 24 yards, two rushes for negative two rushing yards.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: Alex Hogan, one tackle, one Instagram post about that tackle.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then and then our boy Kyler Edwards, uh, one really, really bad pre-game hype up tweet uh for tagging these guys in.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: Sam, Litz time, let's go.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, we had to respond to it.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: I know he's Kyler Edwards, but if you're gonna say something like that, get ready to you know get a little shit for it.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: So yeah, for sure.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: The Kooks did not have a great day.
- 13:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you can't just be calling out your your former school like that and not expect us to clap back.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: I knew you had that in the drafts for a few hours, so you're I was ready for it.
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: I saw I saw it, and it pissed me off so much.
- 13:35SPEAKER_02: I I already tweeted it and saved it in the drafts for when tech was gonna beat them because I had so much confidence in this team that we were.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: Man, it's such just such a shame that we had to hand uh Houston their fourth straight L to Texas Tech teams that haven't exactly been spectacular.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: So it's been nice to be able to rely on a dump with the Cougars.
- 13:56SPEAKER_03: Um, but I can definitely smell um a fun little rivalry building because I know Houston fans want to beat us so bad.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: Hey, credit the Houston fans, though.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: They showed out to this game.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, it was all it was probably 50-50, I think.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, and I know it was in Houston, it was a new, it was technically a neutral side game, but it was in Houston, so it does make sense.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: But there are a lot of cougar fans out there, and they and with the recent rumblings of them coming to the Big 12, I'm sure they really wanted to show out for this game.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: So credit to them, uh, because they they do support their team, though for sure.
- 14:29SPEAKER_03: Like I was I was happy to see that because if we're adding them, I don't want an apathetic team in the conference.
- 14:34SPEAKER_03: No one wants that.
- 14:35SPEAKER_03: Everyone wants fans to talk mess with, especially wherever we keep beating them, we're never gonna lose to them.
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: So never ever.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: Uh hey, hey, one more thing that we haven't touched on yet was Jonathan Garabay went five or five.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: So I I know I know we were a little worried about uh starting him because it's kind of been a question mark at the kicking position lately.
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, but Gare Bay came out and he did his job, and that's what we need to ask for from our kickers.
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: I just needed to include that.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sure.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: That was one field goal and four extra points, I believe.
- 15:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, but anyway, he nailed it all.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: Uh Trey Wolf was doing the kickoffs as well.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: So we're getting both of our kickers involved, which is nice.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, don't see that a lot really in college football.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: So uh, but yeah, Garabay, if he stays consistent, man, he's got the job.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's what it takes.
- 15:16SPEAKER_02: It's just a mental game.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, both these guys have the ability to do it.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: It's just the mental.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, good, good for them.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: For sure, man.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: And as we tie the knot on this uh out of conference game, we did rack up two all-conference awards for the week.
- 15:30SPEAKER_03: We got Rico Jeffers at Big 12 player of the week, uh, defensive player of the week, and Reggie Pearson Jr.
- 15:36SPEAKER_03: as the newcomer of the week.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: So two of our defensive boys got all conference honors for week one.
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: That feels pretty good.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: And really, Eric Azukama, if he got the end zone on one of those long plays, he would have been offensive player of the week as well.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: Uh Bijan Robinson had a great game.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, credit to him, but uh Eric Azukama really was unbelievable to watch.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: If you watch that game, you're thinking this guy is a is a high round draft pick in the NFL.
- 16:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I think every team that's doing their homework on us is terrified of Ezukama.
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: No doubt, no doubt.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: So um, yeah, let's move on, man.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: We're one and oh start the season.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: We couldn't started it any better.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: Well, I guess we could have started better, uh, you know, having a better first half, but honestly, the second half made up for everything.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, we we won pretty handedly there.
- 16:23SPEAKER_03: It's game one, all right.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: You can excuse a first half of game one, and we we came out and just erased that memory anyway with the second half.
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: That second half was definition dominant, no doubt, no doubt.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: So one and oh, let's keep it rolling.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: Let's talk about some other Big 12 games though, because uh we had all other nine Big 12 teams play.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: We went nine and one as a conference, I believe, uh, which is you know a lot better than most of the other conferences, but uh some of those games we they won, but uh you know it kind of hurt to watch a little bit.
- 16:57SPEAKER_02: Uh, but let's start with let's go alphabetically.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: We'll start with Baylor.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: Baylor defeats Texas State 29 to 20.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: This game was uh kind of brutal for Baylor fans.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: I know they had some instant replay issues, uh the broadcast was awful.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: That's all I kept hearing.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: I didn't get we didn't get to watch a lot of these games because uh, you know, we were at the game.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: So um, but to only beat Texas State by nine points, not a not a great start for Baylor.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: No, um, but uh apparently the Texas State got a last-minute touchdown to kind of make it look a little better than it was.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: Perhaps the score isn't completely reflected, but yeah, that's a disappointing showing for Baylor, uh, especially for a team that's looking to uh build up from last last year.
- 17:39SPEAKER_03: So it's you know, I I mean I am polling for the big eight right now, so it's it's good to see them get the W.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: It is week one.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: Um, but you usually want to do better against an opponent like Texas State than 29 and 20.
- 17:52SPEAKER_03: But it maybe the score doesn't necessarily reflect what the game was like.
- 17:55SPEAKER_03: But I did hear that apparently the the ESPN didn't have the broadcasting team there, so it was like the local guys had to do it, so a lot of students were working the game, and so apparently that's that's one of the reasons why it wasn't so great.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Tough scene, uh, not having that ready.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: But uh, let's move on to Iowa State because really talk about disappointment in the in their game.
- 18:18SPEAKER_02: Iowa State beats Northern Iowa 16 to 10.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: Uh, only a six-point win over Northern Iowa, which I I think has given Iowa State trouble in the past, but this is a different Iowa State.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: They should not be only beating Northern Iowa by six points.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Uh, rough showing to start the year for the Cyclones.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: That's pretty uh unexcusable.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: Like, what Iowa State team is this?
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: 2014 Iowa State that would lose this game, you know.
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: So uh this this team has uh even playoff hopes, and the starting the season like this is bad.
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: I know there's some Iowa State fans trying to excuse it, saying it's Iowa kids versus Iowa kids.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: Like, guys, did you not just see Texas Tech pummel a much better team?
- 19:00SPEAKER_03: Like, come on, and that are Texas kids versus Texas kids.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: So it's like this is this is no excuse.
- 19:06SPEAKER_03: Like Iowa State should have blown them out, and that kind of makes it a little nervous.
- 19:10SPEAKER_03: Uh, I'm sure a lot of uh the rest of the Big 12s licking their chops saying that um, you know, maybe Iowa State is a little more vulnerable than we originally thought.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: Maybe so.
- 19:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, I had a bold prediction saying Iowa State was gonna lose four games this year, but you know, we'll get back to that later on.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: This could just be first game jitters.
- 19:25SPEAKER_02: I know northern Iowa has been kind of uh I think they upset them a few years ago, so you know, uh could just be in their heads, but we'll see next week because they play Iowa, which is a huge game for the Cyclones.
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: It is every year, but this one in particular, it's battle of top 10 teams.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: So uh we'll see what they're really made of next week.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, but let's move on to the Jayhawks, who are one-o on the year.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: Uh Kansas Jayhawks defeat FCS South Dakota 17 to 14, and they rush the field.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: Um what uh what a time for the Jayhawks, man.
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: Undefeated.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, one and oh, baby.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 20:03SPEAKER_03: It's probably been a while since they've been able to say that, but um, it's uh you know, it's a it's a it's a good win.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: I know you and I were arguing about this before, but Kansas was not supposed to win this game.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: Kansas was supposed to win one game max this year, so it's you gotta let them have it.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: You know, this this is game one of a brand new coach and basically brand new team two.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: So they they were favored in this game, so they should have been.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: South Dakota's South Dakota's bad, like they're not good.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: So saying this is a good win is not correct, in my opinion.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: It's a win, like it is a win, but it's not a good one either.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: I get the sentiment that any Kansas win is a win, therefore it is good.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: But uh, this is a bad team, and they only beat them by three, and they're still a power five program.
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: Uh, but rush the field all you want.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: I I'm all for it.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: Seriously, if you if you just went through an 0-10 season last year, rush the field on that first win.
- 21:04SPEAKER_02: I really don't care.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Power to you, but uh yeah, it looks like Kansas is going to be bad again this year, like we all predicted.
- 21:10SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, I'm not saying they're winning anything else.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: I'm just saying that this is good for them for getting the win because it's not expected, was all El say.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: No doubt, no doubt.
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: They do play Duke next week, and Duke just lost to an FCS team, I believe.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: So uh tough, tough out there.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: They may have two wins by the time Big 12 play starts.
- 21:28SPEAKER_02: That is a tough scene of a game right there.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: That's a night, that's a nightmare scenario.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: Whoever's watching that one, good luck to you.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: Because they're both very bad.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: But let's move on to the team that surprised me the most because I thought uh, and you know, it is after week one, but the team that impressed me the most was Kansas State this week.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: They defeated Stanford 24 to 7, and honestly, it wasn't even that close.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: Like Kansas State dominated Stanford in every way.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Controlled that whole game.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: This was the one game that we actually got to really watch before we headed off to NRG.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: Um and I was very impressed.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: And I liked what I see because this was the conference.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: I thought they were way too good for any of the remaining eight.
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: And that have to was probably a middling Big 12 team coming here and just absolutely crush one of your more prestigious brands.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: That feels so good, man.
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: And I was I was definitely emailing that game.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: So, but you're right.
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: They Stanford didn't stand a chance the whole game because you could just feel it by watching it.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and what impressed me the most was Kansas State's defense.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, I was uh you read any preseason article, and they said Kansas State did not was not gonna have a good defense, and they proved all of us wrong, uh, because they really just shut out Stanford.
- 22:45SPEAKER_02: I think they didn't score until the very end of the game.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: So uh I think the offense still has a little bit to work on, but Deuce Vaughn is electric, like always.
- 22:54SPEAKER_02: He took off for that huge run.
- 22:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, and then Skylar Thompson's he's a good quarterback, he's he's a really solid quarterback.
- 23:01SPEAKER_02: So uh Kansas State may be a team to watch out for.
- 23:04SPEAKER_02: Uh, also, Stanford may not be that good.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: I think it might be a little combination of that.
- 23:09SPEAKER_03: It was a huge cathartic win for the conference, though.
- 23:12SPEAKER_03: For the remaining big eight teams, that felt so we were living through K-State in that game because it felt so good to watch them just manhandle a Pac-12 team.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, no doubt.
- 23:22SPEAKER_02: So uh good for K-State.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: Let's move on to OU, who oh, who played the mighty green wave of Tulane.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: Uh, ended up winning 40 to 35.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: But man, I was convinced that Tulane was gonna make the comeback.
- 23:40SPEAKER_02: Uh I mean, disappointing showing for OU.
- 23:43SPEAKER_02: Uh, it really was.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: Tulane also put on a great showing.
- 23:47SPEAKER_02: Tulane showed a lot of fight in this game.
- 23:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, but Oklahoma to only beat Tulane by five points, uh, not a rough start to y'all season.
- 23:55SPEAKER_03: I was praying the stars were aligning because after the news of OU and UT leaving the conference, then to blow it to Tulane would have just been amazing.
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: But you're right, Tulane really came in and put it on them.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: Uh, this OU defense may not be what we thought it was.
- 24:10SPEAKER_03: We kept talking about how great of a job they're doing over there with the defense, but maybe it really isn't.
- 24:14SPEAKER_03: Even Spencer Rattler didn't have that great of a game.
- 24:16SPEAKER_03: The guy was the guy was not very careful with the ball.
- 24:19SPEAKER_03: Um, and for OU to only I'm gonna say only put 40 on Tulane, it just kind of seems a little low for what everyone expected.
- 24:26SPEAKER_03: I thought this was gonna be an absolute stamp, like a stomping of Tulane, and but it really wasn't.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: So I'm not gonna just flat out say that OU may be a little more vulnerable than they usually are, but I mean if Tulane can come in to their house and put 35 on them um and make it down to one last drive to whether they win or lose.
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: I love that, and I I that's that feels so good to see against the freaking Sooners.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: No doubt, and they were definitely shaky uh at times.
- 24:51SPEAKER_02: OU had a pretty big lead early on, but then Rattler threw a few interceptions and the defense kind of stuttered a little bit.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: So uh credit to Tulane.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: They got that onside kick at the very end, and they just were one yard short on that fourth down.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: So uh tough way to lose.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: But OU, uh you know, only losing by five to OU in their house is a good showing.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: So good for Tulane, bad for the Sooners.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: Let's move on to another bad Oklahoma performance from the Cowboys of Oklahoma State.
- 25:20SPEAKER_02: They only defeated Missouri State by seven, 23 to 16.
- 25:26SPEAKER_02: Um, not good.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, we news did come out that Spencer uh Sanders did have, I think he had COVID, and I think that's why he missed this game.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: Uh so they had backup Shane Illingsworth playing for them, but uh man, what uh you're only beating Missouri State by a touchdown.
- 25:43SPEAKER_02: That's tough.
- 25:44SPEAKER_03: This was arguably the worst performance of the Big 12 of the day.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: Uh this this they should not have let Missouri State come back into the game like they did.
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: It's only put 23 on them for a school that's known for their offense.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Mike Gunny's known to be a very high-powered man with the uh on the offensive side, offensive side of the ball.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: But Missouri State should not be doing this to you in your house.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: Um, I that that's a pretty bad look from Oklahoma State.
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: I mean, you get the W, but that's way too close for comfort.
- 26:10SPEAKER_02: No doubt.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: I mean, not much more to say.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: You don't have your starting quarterback, and it was kind of last minute, so I can understand not being that prepared, but uh anybody the backup quarterback at Oklahoma State should be killing Missouri State still.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: So uh that's not really an excuse.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: But um, and and even if you I watched the highlights, and Missouri State had almost tied the game there.
- 26:31SPEAKER_02: They brought it all the way down, and the guy, I mean, it was just uh a little off on that pass at the end there, but uh yeah, we'll see.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: I guess we won't really see a lot next week when the Sooners play Tulsa, who lost to an FCS team.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: So I don't know, man.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: Oklahoma State uh may not be that that great this year.
- 26:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, we you and I were saying this at the beginning of the in the preseason episodes.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: I mean, you especially were saying that you are not high on Oklahoma State, and apparently this might be the one uh uh quite the slope for them.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's been a while since they've been really low, but we might be looking at their lowest season in a good while, and I hope so.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: I mean, I want that W, thank you.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: Um, it's it's that that I'd like I like I said, I think maybe outside of the true loss, this was the poorest showing of the day.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, no doubt.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: I I said I wasn't high on Oklahoma State, Baylor, West Virginia, and Kansas State.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: And so far, three out of the four of those I was pretty right on.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: So uh we'll move on uh to a game we can just breeze past.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: TCU defeats Duquesne 45 to three.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: Uh Duquesne's FCS, TCU put him on him, put it on him.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, they they agreed to go to 12 minute quarters in the second half.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, it was just an overpowered matchup.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: I don't even know where Duquesne is, so I don't either.
- 27:46SPEAKER_03: So I've never heard of this team until this game.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: So I've heard of them.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: They played basket, they played basketball in in so I've I've heard I've seen the name before, but uh yeah, uh just a trouncing.
- 27:57SPEAKER_03: So and I'm pretty in touch with that kind of stuff, and I've just never heard of them.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, you do have.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: Let's move on to Texas.
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: Texas defeats uh Louisiana 38 to 18.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, impressive showing from the Longhorns.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: I hate to say it, but it it really was.
- 28:15SPEAKER_02: Uh Bijan Robinson was elite, Hudson card looked apart.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, Sark starts the uh Longhorn era, you know, in a pretty solid fashion.
- 28:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was really impressive.
- 28:25SPEAKER_03: Unfortunately, it was definitely one of the top three wins of the day.
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, hate that it's from the Longhorns because the Raging Cajuns were expected to put up a bigger fight than they did, but it look uh just the thought of Buty having an actually competent coach sucks.
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: Um, but perhaps you know, Louisiana is taking a step back, or maybe it was just game one issues.
- 28:43SPEAKER_03: So uh we'll we'll have to see more of what the story is later.
- 28:46SPEAKER_03: But I mean, yeah, what can El C say?
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: But that was it was a pretty impressive first game.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: What I can say, and I won't say very often, is go Razorbacks next week.
- 28:56SPEAKER_02: Yes, that that kind of hurts to say because I do not like Arkansas fans, but I I hate UT so much more.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: So go Razorbacks next week.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: I don't think the chances are great for the Razorbacks because they are not good, but no, they haven't been for a while, so we'll see.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: But uh yeah, Texas losing Arkansas would be hilarious.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: So moving on to uh the one loss of the Big 12 this week in a poor showing, West Virginia falling to Maryland 30 to 24.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, Maryland's got some juju against the Big 12, man.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: They they always seem to come out with a couple out of conference wins.
- 29:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and if you're gonna take an L, at least it's to a power five team, right?
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: Uh, but uh you know, I'm getting a little tired of the Neil Brown hype at this point.
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: You know, people I'm not saying he's not a good, he's just flat out not a good coach, but people are acting like he's one of the best in the conference, and he just has not shown it these past few years.
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: And he's been here, he's been there as long as Matt Wells has.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: So, and it's it's not a great loss to lose to Maryland, but um uh we didn't get to watch this game, so I don't get to say the whole story, but uh it's obviously not a great look whenever you're trying to kick off a redemption season.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: Look, I've never been a Jared Daky guy, I have never thought that he was going to be a good quarterback in this league.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: Uh, sure, he's got some intangibles, he's got the height, he's got a pretty decent arm.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: He does not ever seem to put it together, and he did not this game from uh what you know fan reaction and uh everything I saw on Twitter were whatever.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: So uh yeah, West Virginia takes a really tough loss.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a bad loss, start the year.
- 30:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's there's no way else to cut it, and it was pretty tight too.
- 30:39SPEAKER_03: So, um, and and the defense was supposed to be the story for West Virginia, and it just uh unfortunately they couldn't hold them until lower than that.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: But uh well, I guess we'll have to see how they uh attempt the rest of their games here.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: We'll see, and we're kind of gonna break down the other Big 12 scores as the season goes on after we talk about the tech game, of course.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: So uh just keeping y'all updated with the rest of the Big 12 and how they're doing.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: So uh nine and one is a good record, although some of those uh some of those games were not it's or were closer than they should have been.
- 31:07SPEAKER_03: Hey, nine and one is literally the best record of all the conferences right now, and the Big 12 was the only conference that didn't lose to an FCS or G5 team.
- 31:16SPEAKER_03: I would say that's pretty impressive, uh, especially for the conference that's a dead man walking or the worst P5, blah blah blah.
- 31:22SPEAKER_03: So I'm I'm happy to see it.
- 31:24SPEAKER_03: Um, even if one of the big remaining big eight blew it.
- 31:27SPEAKER_03: Um, but uh I would definitely say Texas Tech, Kansas State, and UT had the best wins of the week.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'd agree.
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: And what you just said is a great segue because we need to talk about how bad the Pac-12 was this week.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: A conference that is too good for the remaining big eight or big yeah, big eight, I guess, schools.
- 31:47SPEAKER_03: Uh it's a big eight podcast, bro.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: It's a big eight podcast now.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: Uh, this is no longer a Pac-12 podcast.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: The Pac-12 stinks, they're bad, very bad.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: Um Washington losing to an FCS team.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, they were ranked number 20 preseason, uh, losing to Montana, Washington State loses to Utah State, Cal loses to Nevada, Oregon State loses to Purdue, Stanford gets plowed by Kansas State, Arizona loses to future conference, made BYU, and then Oregon played it very tight with Fresno State.
- 32:22SPEAKER_02: So uh the Pac-12 is looking very rough, I would say.
- 32:26SPEAKER_03: There was literally only one good win in the Pac-12, and uh, we don't even know how good LSU is gonna be, and that was UCLA over LSU.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: Everything else was an expected, like you know, crushing of an FCS team or losing to an FCS team.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: So uh other than that, it wasn't all that impressive.
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: And the for the conference that is supposed to be just where the where the the remaining teams in the Big 12 don't add any value, it's just embarrassing.
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: And I think that this is gonna be a common theme for the Pac-12.
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: It's been that way for years.
- 32:55SPEAKER_03: The Pac-12 has had their pants down for years, they have been the worst power pipe conference, and the only reason why they've gotten any respect is because they have a blue blood like USC.
- 33:06SPEAKER_03: So it's just really frustrating because I do think that we'll get more into it later, but the new Big 12 is going to be better than whatever the heck this is.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because this is a uh about as rough a start as you can as a conference, uh, and especially with all this realignment talk this past offseason, uh, not a good way to start for the Pac-12.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: But I have one more question before we move on to that Big 12 expansion talk, and then what was the more boring game?
- 33:30SPEAKER_02: Clemson, Georgia, or Wisconsin, Penn State?
- 33:34SPEAKER_03: Oh man, I didn't get to watch the Clemson George game, but watching the watching the the Penn State Wisconsin game was pretty mind-numbing.
- 33:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, it was brutal.
- 33:47SPEAKER_03: I I would I I'm just gonna have to go with that by default because dude, like I mean, I get some old school people love the hardly ever freaking scoring, but man, I want to see at least 20 points scored on one team.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: Like that that was so boring to not see a single point scored in the first half.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I would say that it did pick up in the second half.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: There were some bigger gains, they actually started throwing the ball downfield.
- 34:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, Penn State uh ended up winning that game.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: Uh, but Clemson, Georgia, that had to be the most disappointing uh from a from a neutral perspective.
- 34:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, just like uh 10 to three, Clemson, Georgia.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: Are you kidding me?
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: The year after Trevor Lawrence leaves, you scored three points.
- 34:33SPEAKER_02: And I mean, Georgia's gonna Georgia has a great defense.
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: There's no denying that.
- 34:38SPEAKER_02: But uh this game was no offensive touchdowns were scored.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: The only touchdown in the game was a pick six by Georgia.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: It was uh it was awful.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: That's my vote for most boring game.
- 34:49SPEAKER_02: But for these to be the most the two hyped games of the week, uh, really, really bad, really bad from a neutral fans perspective.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 34:57SPEAKER_03: I'm not saying it needs to be like 60 to 50, but please, please throw the ball a little more or something.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: Give me something.
- 35:04SPEAKER_02: I don't want to watch uh a first half that ends zero to zero.
- 35:08SPEAKER_02: I don't.
- 35:10SPEAKER_02: But oh yeah, so let's move on.
- 35:12SPEAKER_02: The tech game was much more exciting, uh, non-biased view, of course, you know, uh here on Talking Tech, but let's talk about Big 12 expansion because it is so happening.
- 35:22SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's it's in uh BYU, UCF, Cincinnati, and Houston are expected to formally be invited to the Big 12 sometime this week.
- 35:32SPEAKER_02: Uh, all expected to accept these invitations, of course, and be a part of the Big 12 officially, uh, probably around 2023.
- 35:39SPEAKER_02: Uh, Tristan, what are your thoughts on this?
- 35:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it looks like we it's clear, it's clear as day right now, and it's gone at hyper speed.
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: Like, I didn't expect it to go this fast.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: Like, as soon as the Big 12 created the expansion committee led by Kirby Hokutt, this came together within a couple of weeks.
- 35:56SPEAKER_03: So, but I'm not really that surprised by the candidates.
- 35:59SPEAKER_03: And U of H actually met yesterday to uh go ahead and confirm exploring their conference affiliation, which probably is legal jargon jargon for saying we're getting out of the American.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: So, uh, but I'm I'm with you.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: This probably all happens in 2023, um, even for BYU, because they do have their schedule set up for next season as well.
- 36:19SPEAKER_03: So it'd be hard to kind of mess with that with all their commitments.
- 36:22SPEAKER_03: But this is absolutely happening.
- 36:24SPEAKER_03: And I was state uh AAD, um, he's not on the expansion compute committee committee, but he said that they're perhaps talking about even more.
- 36:33SPEAKER_03: I don't buy it, I don't think he knows that because I think outside of this four, I think the only intriguing option is like Boise State, maybe Memphis, but I feel like that just saturates the league at that point.
- 36:45SPEAKER_03: I think you just get these four who are going to be rock solid additions immediately and won't just be leeches um and see where we go from there from an actual Big 12 conference.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 36:54SPEAKER_02: Add four now and then think about poaching other conferences later on.
- 36:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's honestly like think about the Arizona schools in a few years after we put out a good product for a good number of years, you know.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think that's a good uh way of looking at it, a good strategy moving forward.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: I like these four teams.
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: I think they're all gonna be solid additions.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: We've said it before on the pod.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: Um, Houston was the one I was iffy about, but that's just because they're another Texas team.
- 37:20SPEAKER_02: It's not like they don't make sense or anything.
- 37:22SPEAKER_02: Uh so you know, uh maybe I would have added Memphis over Houston, but uh, you know, that's just me being me.
- 37:30SPEAKER_02: But uh Houston's a good ad, no matter how you look at it.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah, U of H is the number four for everybody because I think everybody else is like, yes, you do BYU, Cincinnati and Central Florida.
- 37:39SPEAKER_03: Um, and what's gonna be kind of funny about this new Big 12 is they're all gonna be the remainders of old power conferences for the most part.
- 37:48SPEAKER_03: Like you have you have four teams from the Big Eight, you have four teams from the Southwest, you have two teams from the Big East, you have BYU, who's basically power five level independent, and then the only one that's a bit of an outlier is um is the U UCF from the American, and you know, and they've proven that they can probably compete at the top level, so it's it's this is a solid core of teams.
- 38:10SPEAKER_03: I think it's a fun league, and I think it's gonna be a good league in all sports.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: I think it's gonna be a very strong football and basketball league.
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: I'm not quite sure what the others bring in baseball wise, but uh, I'm sure it's solid enough.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think BYU's got a pretty decent team.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: I'm uh, but again, that's just me.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: I don't know about baseball, but I know basketball-wise, these are all really solid teams.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: UCF, iffy in basketball, but they've had some good years here and there.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: But Houston's great in basketball, BYU's solid, Cincinnati's had some really good years.
- 38:42SPEAKER_02: Uh, so I I the one more funny thing I thought, uh, coming around this expansion thing is the Big 12's not budgeting on UT and OU leaving early.
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: I I it's hilarious because they're even talking about going to 14 teams for those two years until from 2023 to 2025, until OU and UT uh break out of the the TV rights deal.
- 39:06SPEAKER_02: So that would be hilarious if we if we hold them in the Big 12 for four more years.
- 39:12SPEAKER_03: I'm so down for that.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: Things you love to see, and apparently the insiders are saying it's making the OU and UT like board and registrate so pissed off.
- 39:22SPEAKER_03: Like they they hate how much the other eight is doing to them right now because they are getting that bag, and I I you gotta hold their feet to the fire, especially since it really looks like there's some real unity within the conference now.
- 39:34SPEAKER_03: How the big eight will stick stick together now.
- 39:36SPEAKER_03: It's great to see them say, no, bro, you you owe us, you owe us big right now.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: So I love to see it because in the few I feel like the future for these remaining teams is pretty bright in this new uh conference.
- 39:48SPEAKER_03: It doesn't look like look like there's a true alpha male that'll just dominate everybody else.
- 39:53SPEAKER_03: Um, and I can't wait to watch OU and UT lose way more games.
- 39:56SPEAKER_03: So that's that's that's gonna be very spicy, um, especially if the expansion, uh the playoff expansion 12 teams earlier rather than later.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's going to be a really fun league, it's going to be a really competitive league.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: It's not gonna be OU winning every year.
- 40:10SPEAKER_02: It's uh it's it's gonna be nice, a nice change of pace.
- 40:13SPEAKER_02: Uh, the product will be good, the perception may not be as good, but that's all BS anyway, you know.
- 40:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so and that takes time, yeah.
- 40:23SPEAKER_02: It does.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: It's gonna take time.
- 40:25SPEAKER_02: We could put out really good teams.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: I mean, we could put out some really good teams this year of these of these this new big 12 for sure.
- 40:32SPEAKER_03: You know, I'm definitely gonna be watching UCF, Cincinnati, BYU, U of H pretty closely this season.
- 40:37SPEAKER_03: I want to see how they do.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, I just want to be and I want to get excited about seeing them play in the Jones or going and playing in their house.
- 40:43SPEAKER_03: So I just I want to see the best product.
- 40:45SPEAKER_03: I hope they have great bands.
- 40:46SPEAKER_03: I know that most of them do, so uh, I'm excited about so.
- 40:49SPEAKER_03: All right, man.
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: So let's let's talk about what we would want to see in this new conference.
- 40:54SPEAKER_03: How do you want to see it broken down?
- 40:57SPEAKER_03: I like the divisions.
- 40:58SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think that's just a good go-to.
- 41:01SPEAKER_02: Uh, a good uh it it limits travel for some of these teams.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: You know, UCF's gonna be far from everybody, West Virginia's already far, BYU is gonna be a little out there.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: So I think the east-west divisions of what was it?
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: BYU, Tech, Oklahoma State, Baylor, TCU, U of H, and then the other six in the other one, the Kansas schools, Iowa State, West Virginia, um oh, where did I put it in Cincinnati?
- 41:29SPEAKER_02: Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 41:31SPEAKER_02: So uh I think the East West is solid.
- 41:33SPEAKER_02: Uh some people are saying north and south.
- 41:35SPEAKER_02: I think East West works.
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: I think it's really just splitting uh who plays UCF and who plays BYU.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: I think that's the whole deal right now.
- 41:43SPEAKER_02: But uh I like divisions, I think divisions works.
- 41:46SPEAKER_02: Uh I I've I've never really gotten the pushback from divisions, to be honest.
- 41:50SPEAKER_03: I I I agree with this completely, especially whenever you're gonna be in a conference that covers a huge uh swath of the country.
- 41:58SPEAKER_03: I feel like divisions make sense for traveling and rivalries.
- 42:01SPEAKER_03: Um, I have the same exact loadout um because you don't want to make BYU fly to Central Florida or West Virginia, and you want to make sure that you can allow West Virginia, who has some Florida ties, go play in UCF and allow West Virginia to go play in Ohio, which is going to be right next door.
- 42:16SPEAKER_03: So you want to make sure that the outliers are together and you got to make sure the Texas teams stay together with Oklahoma State as well, because that's just such a natural fit uh for competition.
- 42:26SPEAKER_03: I think you completely ignore setting cross-divisional rivalries.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: I think you don't do that because I know most conferences do that to uh sustain some sort of rivalry they lose by making the conference way too big.
- 42:40SPEAKER_03: Um, because I mean AM and South Carolina are not rivals, and they were they will never be rivals.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: So I don't think you do anything like that.
- 42:48SPEAKER_03: I think you just allow you to the five division games and then you do four cross uh divisional games.
- 42:54SPEAKER_03: And I think you set it up where you do home and homes with the cross-divisional games and cycle through them every other year.
- 42:59SPEAKER_03: So you get to share home and homes, and then but you also get to see every single team every other year.
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: That's a good idea.
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: That's a that's a really solid idea.
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: Uh, to break it down a little better, because I kind of butchered it earlier.
- 43:10SPEAKER_02: It would be in the east, it would be Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, West Virginia, UCF, and Cincinnati.
- 43:18SPEAKER_02: In the west, it would be BYU, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Baylor, TCU, and Houston.
- 43:24SPEAKER_02: Um, everything you said was correct.
- 43:26SPEAKER_02: Uh, it limits travel.
- 43:28SPEAKER_02: It uh the cross-division rivalries, I completely uh just throw those out the window.
- 43:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, there's no reason in the SEC that uh Georgia and AM don't play uh for like 10 years or something like that.
- 43:42SPEAKER_02: It's ridiculous to be in the same conference and not play somebody in your conference.
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: So yeah, keep flipping them, keep turning them every other year, home and homes, all that kind of good stuff.
- 43:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think that's basically the only way you can cut the divisions as well.
- 43:55SPEAKER_03: I know that there are some, I was, you know, of course, scouting out Twitter, seeing what they have to say about this because everybody has.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: idea on it you know some people were saying that you need to split the Texas schools so that the other Big 12 teams can come down to Texas more often or have them have some Texas schools in their division for recruiting purposes I think that'd be a huge mistake I think you make sure that you you keep the Texas schools together because I think that's a really those are really fun matchups because they're gonna be some of the most fun matchups in the conference because they're national rivalries.
- 44:21SPEAKER_03: You don't want to split up any of the rivalries because those are the most fun games so I think that would be a huge mistake.
- 44:26SPEAKER_03: Just want to make sure that was included in you know if you're gonna do divisions I don't think you do divisional championships though.
- 44:34SPEAKER_03: I think you stick to the best two teams in the conference how do you how do you judge that uh when you play a divisional schedule you know what I'm saying right but it's it that's why it's kind of tough you but I feel like you got to do the best records against each other.
- 44:52SPEAKER_03: I do like conference records I should say I know some people are going to complain about hey they got to play Kansas while we had to go play a good say BYU you know how is that fair that we took the L and they got the W from Kansas but even though we're out of the championship I just think it's best for the conference I I think divisional championships are kind of boring because you you there's only so many matchups you can get and it does what if there is another a better team in the other division that's not playing in it and it's also better for the playoff that's what it's all about now.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: So if you put the two best uh teams against each other for the playoff it looks way better for the bid yeah and I mean uh you're right uh look at the other power five programs I mean or the power five conferences look at how they set up their divisional one is clearly better than the other in pretty much every other conference so uh I can see how that can be uh controversial and and you know as a fan you wouldn't want that but I just think it's hard when you play a full divisional schedule to then just take the best two teams I guess since you're you're gonna play four from the other division every single year no matter what I guess that makes sense you're getting enough of the other division to judge who should be in the championship game so I I may agree with you there.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: I I I to be honest I haven't thought a ton about the championship uh I just kind of figured divisional championship but uh yeah I I could see going the other way yeah the only reason why I'm saying otherwise divisions is the way to go is because of travel.
- 46:17SPEAKER_03: I feel like it travels better for the rivalries and uh just you know keeping the budgets a little tighter.
- 46:22SPEAKER_03: So but the championship is just so important because all people care about on a national stage and money wise is the national championship.
- 46:30SPEAKER_03: It's not the old days where the conferences mattered as much as they did.
- 46:33SPEAKER_03: I mean to every single team left in the Big 12 winning the conference championship is going to be huge for the fan base.
- 46:39SPEAKER_03: But it's not like Oklahoma we're winning the winning the Big 12 is just expected they don't really even care that much anymore.
- 46:44SPEAKER_03: So um it's you definitely want to make sure you put your your uh conference in the best situation to put one maybe two depending on the what the con the the playoffs look like into the playoff because that keeps the respect for the conference high.
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: You don't want to be like the Pac-12 where it's been eons since he played in the playoff um yeah and and yeah and like I said it the division the non-divisional championship makes for a more interesting matchup like we every year in the Big Ten we just see Ohio State cream whatever worst team uh won the the West in the Big 10.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: So I just think it's better to have the two best teams go against each other.
- 47:16SPEAKER_02: No doubt no doubt.
- 47:17SPEAKER_02: So uh man this is good.
- 47:19SPEAKER_02: This is good for the Big 12.
- 47:20SPEAKER_02: This is good for the conference.
- 47:21SPEAKER_02: I'm happy we're moving quickly on this and adding the four teams that we should add right here.
- 47:27SPEAKER_02: So uh good on the Big 12 expansion committee for getting this done and getting it done pretty quickly.
- 47:33SPEAKER_03: It feels good to know what the future is like it was getting a little old not knowing what the heck was happening.
- 47:38SPEAKER_03: So I'm happy to know what the next step is.
- 47:41SPEAKER_03: I know there's a ton of fans out there that aren't happy we're gonna stay in the Big 12 but like we just went down how bad the Pac 12 was and I'm not saying that it's a it would be a worse situation to end up there but at the same time you if if you judge how much you enjoy Texas Tech football off of you know if we're playing Oregon uh Oregon State or Kansas State I mean come on how be a better fan like let's just enjoy the game enjoy game day no doubt no doubt enjoy it a little more uh be a little more positive when it comes to this kind of stuff so uh let's move on did you have anything else on expansion uh no just other than I think this is an immediate peer to the pack in the ACC I I think this is immediately just as good if not better than both those conferences all the ACC have it has is Clemson and people need to stop pretending like the ACC some sort of weird juggernaut.
- 48:31SPEAKER_02: So and Clemson may not be fantastic as we just witnessed so um yeah I agree the product will be better the perception will not and that's just the name of the game that's what it is uh college sports it's what it's come to so uh let's move on to our talk at tech breakdown where we're gonna talk about uh the other sports going on around around campus you know we have some other sports that we should touch up on that y'all should you know just watch a little more if you're just chilling out uh go watch some Texas Tech soccer some Texas Tech volleyball uh and if you can't we're gonna give you an update right here on talking tech so um let's start with soccer beat Cal State Fullerton and UTSA this past week uh we are now ranked 21 in the United Soccer coaches poll and up next we have the Wildcat invitational where we go to Tucson and play Arizona and Arizona State.
- 49:22SPEAKER_03: So uh big moves for the soccer team yes I love the way we're shaping up this season.
- 49:27SPEAKER_02: Um we're definitely already getting some national looks uh I know all our ladies are so hungry from what happened last season so let's just keep up keep it up keep it moving because uh conference is conference plays right around the corner so let's finish off up the uh the out of conference play with nothing but dubs there's some pretty good conference teams uh for soccer this season too I know TCU's putting together a really good squad uh and West Virginia as well so uh getting tech up there with those two uh Oklahoma State kind of kind of right behind them so uh some good games ahead for the Texas Tech ladies uh soccer so uh moving on to volleyball we uh in this past week we beat Rhode Island and Texas State but lost to number six Ohio State uh KJ Adams was named Big 12 defensive player of the week for the volleyball team and up next we have a game at northern Colorado on the eighth and then the Buffs Invitational which is the weirdest group of teams uh combined here for this uh this little mini tournament uh we go at Colorado and then we play San Jose State uh so Colorado Texas Tech and San Jose State it's a weird group but um you know go volleyball we're uh we're doing pretty good to start off the year the lost to Ohio State kind of stinks but they're pretty good.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: Yes they they're ranked um but it's it's good to see our ladies making some progress from last season.
- 50:46SPEAKER_03: So I just hope they keep up the trend.
- 50:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah no doubt so uh that's what we have right now I think golf is doing a few things with the individual players we'll get into it once we get like the Texas Tech golf going uh but I think that's not till spring.
- 51:00SPEAKER_02: So uh those are the two sports right now and obviously we'll keep updating you as the weeks and months go on.
- 51:07SPEAKER_02: So uh we do have one more thing we need to talk about the Stephen F.
- 51:12SPEAKER_02: Austin game next week give a little preview for the mighty are they the lumberjacks?
- 51:18SPEAKER_02: Yes yeah mighty lumberjacks coming to Lubbock Texas uh we're gonna give you a little preview right now it is Saturday September 11th uh 6 p.m another night game for Texas tech to start off the year it is going to be on ESPN plus so pay the five bucks for this month go watch the Red Raiders on Saturday be able to I know it kind of sucks being on ESPN plus but it is Stephen F.
- 51:41SPEAKER_03: Austin I get it uh not you know so uh it's gonna be at Jones ATT Stadium in Lubbock Texas and uh uh the the line's not out yet but Texas Tech will be heavily favored yeah and it with the with the game being at 6 p.m Lubbock and Texas Tech students we have no excuse not to be there and be allowed at the stadium you know have all have all the fun during the day tailgate make it long but make sure y'all show up to the game I know the players are really really calling us out for it so um as in they just want our support so make sure y'all can make it if you can um because it's gonna be a fun game because it's we're probably gonna light the jacks up it's gonna be a unfortunately a long trip home to Nakatoja just for them on Sunday um or Saturday night but you know it's I'm not nervous about this I know I've I'm sound like I'm a broken record from last season but it we we haven't lost to an FCS team in my memory I tried looking up anytime we have we I legit can't find it it's been at least over 10 years um and last time we beat uh played SFA was in 2016 during our time uh we had a nice 69 17 dub against the lumberjacks um so it and it does look like they're looking to put up any sort of threat they had they did they they had a decent season last season but they lost to every single FBS team they played that's a big ask though but but I mean whenever we're playing UTEP there's a chance so uh but they also lost to UTSA and SMU so I'm not too worried about it.
- 53:08SPEAKER_03: Um and I it's hard to say much more since they've only played one game and it's like it's a fellow FCS team that's not quite as good as they are in Tarleton State.
- 53:16SPEAKER_03: Uh but man there really isn't much to talk about other than Texas Tech just needs to get this dub get get it done and tune up uh tune ourselves up for Florida International.
- 53:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah man you know there there isn't much to say about the Lumberjacks they are an FCS team I know Houston Baptist is all in the back of our minds but if second half uh Texas Tech against Houston comes out we should have no issue uh our defense but but that's the thing is you know mentally you got to get right for this game just as you get up for the Houston game or the Texas game or the OU game or anything.
- 53:48SPEAKER_02: So uh you know come out with that mentality it seems like Matt Wells gets these guys in the right mindset uh before each game um and and you know this is the first game for a lot of these guys in the Jones as well you know uh Colin Schooler who played for us all last season never saw pack jones because of COVID so uh getting him and and then all the new transfers we have coming in Tyler Shuck all these guys this is this is big time all these guys um they just need to take care of business like you said they are one and oh on the year Stephen F.
- 54:18SPEAKER_02: Austin in a dominant 20 to 10 victory over Tarleton state uh nothing really stands out they had a pretty balanced attack they they run they ran the ball a lot they uh passed the ball a lot uh pretty even about what Texas Tech did against Houston so um you know we'll see we should take care of business i i hope we win this game by 50.
- 54:39SPEAKER_03: Absolutely man and we have some fresh momentum going in that perhaps some of these guys and some of these dudes haven't really seen yet we're actually getting AP votes for the top 25 already so we need to get there and show some home field advantage uh there's really no excuse at 6 p.m not to be there um and i i'm not too worried about it happening i think i think there's it's gonna be a good showing uh and then it's gonna be the same news uh next week weekend as well this there's no excuse for this to be close i don't think anyone's expecting it to be close so it's just up to our players to get it out there and execute because that's all they have to do they just have to go out there and play their game because I don't think there's gonna be a whole lot of adversity just don't let them believe just don't let them believe they can win and you got it don't give them any hope uh you got a score prediction oh man you just kind of dropped this on me out of nowhere uh you know what let's let's go uh let's go 4613 okay okay right on i'm gonna say i'm gonna i'm gonna give us some i'm gonna give us some credit here i'm gonna go 58 to 10 that's what i'm gonna say uh that's my score prediction uh hope that doesn't go back and bite me in the butt but i think we should handedly defeat this team uh against the lumberjacks you know um it's an FCS game uh we gotta win it by lot yeah there's no excuse not to I really do not want to repeat last year because that really kind of set the season off for the worst possible start like and the vibes just got worse and worse um and it just felt like we never really recovered so I would like us to just keep this momentum that we have um because this this this team is going to be a quarter as of as good as Houston was so this is this should not be close.
- 56:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah absolutely so uh let's end it off uh with our song of the week my friend we just came off a dub uh Texas Tech is undefeated we are one and oh we are feeling good what is your feel good Texas Tech just one song of the week I'm gonna go with a group of Lubbock well uh Texas Tech alum with uh flatland cavalry I'm gonna go with off their new album it's really good um I'm going off their jam of I'm going with some things never change because that's how it felt whenever I was at the Houston game with the with all the boys and the ladies uh cheering on our red raiders um and I hope everyone feels that way in Lubbock that no matter what it's just a great time some things never change flatland cavalry lightning straps it's light on falling red something never change very nice uh another another i'm i've never really gotten into flatland cavalry and that's not that's not uh that's just on me for not listening to them i've just never really gotten into them i don't know hey they're they're like the big hot Texas tech band right now everyone's saying they're kind of like a new turnpike they don't they're a little happier than turnpike um but uh I know a lot of people might be getting mad at that comparison but they're probably the closest thing to turn pike since they've been gone okay well I'll take that hot take for what it is uh I'll have to give that one a listen but uh my song of the week because we beat Houston because they always say H Town hold it down I'm gonna do uh held it down by chance the rapper featuring Jeremiah um we held it down in Houston we defeated him we one-handedly this is a great song this is a jam it's actually more of a holiday song but I figured the the title worked and it's a and it's a jam it makes you feel good and I felt good after that Houston game so that's my song of the week Held It Down.
- 58:08SPEAKER_02: We don't know where we're going we're going out and we took care of grandma we held it down we held it down we took care of mama we held it down happy vibes only right now absolutely happy vibes for the talk and tech boys right now hopefully we'll have more health happy and healthy vibes going forward throughout this football season but let's end it off like we always do with some plugs you can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter Tristan is at Tristy Mick I am at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez you can follow the pod on Twitter at talking tech pod follow us throughout all the football season we're gonna give y'all some good content I know we didn't tweet a lot during the game but that's because we were at the game we will not be at every game so you know we'll be following along with everybody that can't be at the game and following along uh via social media so um you can follow our songs of the week playlist that is on Spotify and Apple Music we have some good jams on there get y'all ready for game day throw it on on Saturday morning jam out with us while you're drinking a few brewski's getting ready to watch Texas Tech play uh and that's it you know we're gonna end it off like we always do always recum tech one and oh right where we want to be recumptech uh wow first of all uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan uh their program tough guys just uh a lot of fun I love the game of basketball but also love West Texas and I love Steven and Tristan so I'm extremely proud well I don't know where we go from here I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down this just doesn't get any better than this I just want to tell Steven and Tristan thanks for coming out the energy uh was really really good in there today uh we fed off of it I think it goes back and forth tremendous uh great job and um you know just just proud of our guys for the way they responded
