- 0:33I'm Jordan Sterling, alongside Ava Brooks, and we're both positive behavior
- 0:37specialists.
- 0:39That's right!
- 0:40I'm also creative correspondent here at PTT Music.
- 0:43If you're joining us for the first time, a huge welcome to our community!
- 0:48Here, our intent is to take you behind the music to explore how purposeful sound and
- 0:54positive behavioral techniques can elevate your confidence,
- 0:58awaken genuine joy, strengthen your mindset, and inspire you to thrive.
- 1:04That's right, Ava.
- 1:05Every episode blends the science of human behavior with Music With Purpose and Sound
- 1:10With Impact.
- 1:11Today we're exploring a theme close to our hearts: Why We Overestimate Failure,
- 1:17and why the mind is so much more resilient and adaptable than we anticipate.
- 1:22Ava, our environments constantly offer cues that prompt natural curiosity and
- 1:26growth.
- 1:27As positive behavior specialists, we see how every moment gives us a wonderful
- 1:31chance to practice positive techniques, don't we?
- 1:35Oh, absolutely.
- 1:36In behavioral science, every cue is an opportunity for learning.
- 1:41When we notice how our surroundings inspire us, we can consciously guide our mindset
- 1:46toward joy, appreciation, and purposeful action.
- 1:49It connects beautifully to landmark research in behavioral decision science and
- 1:54positive psychology: the groundbreaking work on affective forecasting by Dr Daniel
- 1:59Gilbert at Harvard University alongside Dr Jane Ebert from MIT,
- 2:03published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
- 2:07Yes, that Harvard and MIT collaboration is brilliant!
- 2:12They looked directly at how people forecast emotional experiences and how cognitive
- 2:16systems optimize satisfaction when making choices.
- 2:21What did they uncover in their deep dive?
- 2:23In their famous field experiment at Harvard, students in a darkroom photography
- 2:27course produced two meaningful black and white prints.
- 2:31The researchers divided them into two groups.
- 2:34One group had a permanent choice of which print to keep.
- 2:37The other group was told they could exchange their print anytime over several days.
- 2:41And here's the behavioral paradox Gilbert and Ebert discovered.
- 2:45When forecasting ahead of time, people assumed keeping options open wouldn't affect
- 2:51happiness.
- 2:52In fact, most people intuitively preferred having the option to change their minds
- 2:58later.
- 2:59Yet the empirical data showed the exact opposite experience!
- 3:04The Harvard students who made a permanent commitment experienced a substantial
- 3:08increase in genuine satisfaction for their chosen print.
- 3:12Meanwhile, those who kept the door open liked their prints significantly less.
- 3:19It's remarkable science!
- 3:21Dr Gilbert describes this as the activation of our psychological immune system,
- 3:26our innate cognitive capacity to subjectively optimize our circumstances.
- 3:31When we make a clear commitment, our cognitive processes immediately start
- 3:35highlighting all the unique virtues, meaning, and beauty in the choice we made.
- 3:40And when choices remain perpetually open, the brain keeps evaluating rather than
- 3:47experiencing fulfillment.
- 3:49In behavioral terms, wholehearted commitment triggers post decisional satisfaction
- 3:55and deep emotional appreciation.
- 3:58Precisely!
- 3:59The research affirms that commitment isn't limiting.
- 4:03Commitment is an active catalyst for authentic happiness.
- 4:07It frees your cognitive energy to thrive where you're planted.
- 4:12That foundation from Harvard and MIT is so empowering.
- 4:16It demonstrates that when we wholeheartedly dedicate ourselves to our creative
- 4:20passions and growth, our behavioral systems rise to create deep joy.
- 4:27That explains why we overestimate failure.
- 4:30We anticipate that a detour will derail our joy, underestimating our mind's powerful
- 4:35capacity to adapt, learn, and flourish!
- 4:40It truly does.
- 4:42It shows how deliberate behavioral alignment unlocks flourishing.
- 4:47And that connection between overcoming perceived obstacles and stepping into
- 4:51purposeful commitment is reflected so powerfully in our music here at PTT Music.
- 4:57It really is, Jordan!
- 4:59In fact, two PTT Music songs capture this dynamic perfectly.
- 5:04The first one is "Mountains of Faith".
- 5:07When people think about why we overestimate failure, they often view a challenge
- 5:12like an insurmountable peak.
- 5:14But "Mountains of Faith" reminds us that faith, purpose, and belief allow us to
- 5:20elevate our perspective above any perceived limitation and stand tall in our full
- 5:25potential.
- 5:26Absolutely, Ava!
- 5:27"Mountains of Faith" gives you that grand, unshakeable confidence that you have
- 5:33everything you need within you.
- 5:35And then right alongside it, we have our track "Gotta Get Through".
- 5:39That song speaks directly to active momentum and perseverance.
- 5:43It reinforces the truth that when you encounter an unexpected twist or a steep
- 5:48learning curve, you do not stop.
- 5:51You have the inner strength and behavioral endurance to navigate forward and reach
- 5:56the other side.
- 5:57Exactly.
- 5:58Together, "Mountains of Faith" and "Gotta Get Through" illustrate the complete
- 6:03mindset shift for why we overestimate failure.
- 6:06"Mountains of Faith" provides the steadfast vision, while "Gotta Get Through"
- 6:12delivers the driving rhythm of active perseverance.
- 6:16They remind us that our capacity to grow and succeed is infinitely greater than any
- 6:21temporary obstacle our minds might imagine.
- 6:24The moment you take intentional action, your mind aligns around optimism and
- 6:29proactive solutions.
- 6:31You realize just how capable and creative you truly are.
- 6:35That's the heart of positive behavioral science.
- 6:38We can intentionally craft our environment and habits to invite success and creative
- 6:44flow.
- 6:45What are some of the best behavioral techniques to support that uplift?
- 6:49It begins with setting positive cues.
- 6:52When we view new opportunities with curiosity, we prompt our brain to seek out
- 6:57progress, celebrate possibilities, and welcome purposeful growth.
- 7:02Yes!
- 7:03And music's one of the most effective behavioral primes we have.
- 7:07Immersing yourself in tracks like "Mountains of Faith" and "Gotta Get Through" by
- 7:12PTT Music immediately energizes your emotional state and primes your mind for focus,
- 7:19courage, and inspired action.
- 7:22That's why our mission is Music With Purpose and Sound With Impact.
- 7:26We intentionally use sound to elevate perspective, encourage perseverance,
- 7:31and awaken authentic confidence.
- 7:34For our wonderful listeners looking to practice a positive behavior technique today,
- 7:39what simple practice can they embrace?
- 7:41I love using the Proactive Commitment Protocol.
- 7:44Whenever you have an inspiring idea or goal, immediately take one concrete,
- 7:50affirmative step within twenty four hours to celebrate and anchor that intention.
- 7:56Give yourself the joy of seeing your progress in motion.
- 7:59That's wonderful because it generates positive momentum right away.
- 8:04You reinforce your confidence and celebrate your creative capability.
- 8:08Exactly.
- 8:09True confidence blossoms as you trust your innate ability to adapt,
- 8:14learn, thrive, and share your gifts with the world.
