- 0:07The Boston Red Sox faced the Detroit Tigers for a Saturday afternoon game at Tigers Stadium on July 8, 1967.
- 0:15The Red Sox were led by the legendary Dick Williams in his first year as a manager.
- 0:20Boston entered the game with a 40-37 record.
- 0:23The Tigers were coached by Mayo Smith in his first year with the Tigers,
- 0:27having coached the Phillies and Reds in the mid-1950s
- 0:30before returning to baseball to manage a talented Tigers team that was on the rise.
- 0:35They entered the game in second place in the AL East with a 43-34 record.
- 0:39This is audio from the national TV broadcast featuring announcers Kurt Gowdy, Pee Wee Reese, and Sandy Kovacs.
- 0:46Hi everybody, this is Kurt Gowdy, your play-by-play broadcaster of NBC's Major League Baseball, along with Pee Wee Reese and Sandy Kovacs.
- 1:01Today we're in Tigers Stadium as two contending teams in the American League collide here.
- 1:07While the Minnesota Twins and Chicago White Sox are playing over in Chicago, the Tigers and the Red Sox are going at it here.
- 1:14And of course the Red Sox have been the surprise team of the American League this year.
- 1:18A club that finished ninth last year, which has many fine players, right now is in pen and contention
- 1:24and placed 47 games at home in the last half of the year.
- 1:29The Tigers went into a bad slump for a spell, losing 14 out of 19, but they bounced back now and have won five in a row.
- 1:37They defeated the Red Sox last night in 11 innings for their fifth victory in succession,
- 1:42but I believe Pee Wee Reese and Sandy Kovacs will concur that the Red Sox, with four hitters in the top ten of the league,
- 1:48came up with three runs to tie the ballgame last night in the ninth inning, and that's the kind of club they are.
- 1:53You can't count them out without hitting in any game. What do you think, Pee Wee?
- 1:57Well, Kurt, I'd have to agree with you, because the fans last night here, they had 25,000 of them.
- 2:02They did not leave this ballpark because they thought that this Boston club does have any quality ball club,
- 2:07and they showed just that, but they lost another one-one ballgame.
- 2:10I'm looking forward to seeing this Boston ball club, because we haven't seen them this year. Sandy, about you?
- 2:15Well, I feel the same way, Pee Wee. They've got some fine players on the ball club, like Kostramski and Petrocelli,
- 2:21that I've never seen. I've never seen them play, and I'm looking forward to seeing it.
- 2:25I know I'm going to see some of them in the All-Star game, but I want to see them before that.
- 2:29Well, it seems like that we do know this Boston ball club, because Mr. Gowdy is always talking about what a great ball club they have,
- 2:36and of course the Detroit ball club had a few injuries, but they're sticking right in there.
- 2:40I think they'll stay in there. If they can stay close until K-line gets back, I think they've got a good chance.
- 2:45It's a little tough on a ball club to lose, you know, the number one ball player on the club,
- 2:50and possibly the number one player in the league, and stay in there.
- 2:54It hurts them physically, on the field, and mentally, but if they stay close until his hand is better,
- 2:59I think they're going to be right up in it all year.
- 3:01Okay, Kurt, that's it from over here.
- 3:04All right, today's pitchers here on a beautiful afternoon in Detroit.
- 3:08Denny McClain, a right-hander, nine wins and nine losses, will be working for the Tigers.
- 3:13And another right-hander, Lee Stang, three wins, five losses, will be pitching for the Red Sox.
- 3:18NBC's Major League Baseball will continue from Tiger Stadium, Detroit, as the Boston Red Sox meet the Detroit Tigers.
- 3:27Are you ready for NBC Week?
- 3:36Sundays this fall, Bonanza returns. Bonanza.

- 4:13Big, new, different.
- 4:19Are you ready for NBC Week?
- 4:24We'll be ready for you.
- 4:30Now, the batting orders for today's game for the visiting Boston Red Sox,
- 4:34at second base leading off will be Mike Andrews.
- 4:37Batting number two at third base will be Joe Floyd.
- 4:41In left field, hitting third, Carl Yastremski.
- 4:44The clean-up man in right field is Tony Canigliaro.
- 4:48The first baseman is George Scott, batting number five.
- 4:52Rico Petroselli is the shortstop, batting number six.
- 4:56Reggie Smith is the center field, batting seven.
- 5:00Mike Ryan will be catching, and the pitcher will be Lee Stang.
- 5:06Stang pitching, Ryan catching. The battery today for the Boston Red Sox.
- 5:17The Tigers will have Lenny Green in left field leading off.
- 5:21Gary Lumpy in third base, batting number two.
- 5:24Dick McCallop in second base, hitting third.
- 5:28Norm Cash in first base, batting clean-up.
- 5:31Jim Northrook in right field, batting number five.
- 5:35Bill Frean will be the catcher, hitting sixth.
- 5:38Mickey Stanley in center field, batting seventh.
- 5:42Ray Euler, the shortstop, batting eighth.
- 5:46And Denny McClain will be fishing today for the Tigers.
- 5:51And the men in blue are walking out, and they're really the men in blue today,
- 5:56with their lovely blue shirts and blue pants and blue caps
- 6:01in the American League here in the hot weather.
- 6:05They take off their jackets.
- 6:07They're Bill Valentine behind the plate, Marty Springstead at first base,
- 6:11Johnny Stevens umpiring at second, and Bob Stewart at third.
- 6:16Wally Moses out representing the Tigers, and Dick Williams,
- 6:21the rookie big league manager, exchanging a lineup card.
- 6:25He's looking right at you now over the shoulder of the umpire of the Red Sox.
- 6:32It's always interesting to note that they make out the lineups in triplicates,
- 6:37and when they go to the plate, they exchange lineup cards,
- 6:41where the umpire is having one and each manager is having a lineup card.
- 6:45Here are the standings right up to the minute now in the American League.
- 6:49Chicago won yesterday.
- 6:51They lead the Tigers by three, the Twins by three and a half, the Red Sox by six.
- 6:55Ladies and gentlemen, our national anthem.
- 7:25The National Anthem.
- 7:50The National Anthem.
- 8:09In the National League, the Cardinals won last night.
- 8:12They lead the Cubs now who lost their fifth in a row to Houston by two and a half,
- 8:16the Reds by four, the Braves by six, and the Giants by six.
- 8:22The Giants won last night against the Dodgers.
- 8:25They're sixth out instead of six and a half.
- 8:28Though we still do have two sizzling races here in the Major League
- 8:32as we're approaching the All-Star game break.
- 8:35The Tigers are on the field,
- 8:37and McLean is about to begin his warm-up pitches on a warm afternoon in Detroit.
- 8:42The temperature is in the 80s here, it's a little bit muggy.
- 8:46We have very little breeze.
- 8:48What breezer is is blowing from home plate out towards second base.
- 8:53This is one of the prettiest ballparks of the majors,
- 8:56and incidentally one of the best action or hitting ballparks.
- 8:59There's a good background here for the hitters,
- 9:02and the stands are within easy range in left field and right field,
- 9:06and also a low line drive is out here.
- 9:09So it's not an easy park to pitch in unless you make those batters hit us straight away,
- 9:13because there's a very deep center field here of 440 feet.
- 9:17The idea is to keep the right-handers and the left-handers from pulling,
- 9:21and to get them to hit into this deep center field.
- 9:23Now as Denny McLean warms up, let's have Sandy Kovacs talk about the Tigers starting pitcher.
- 9:29Kurt McLean's basically a fastball and curveball pitcher.
- 9:32They say he's working on a slider now,
- 9:35which might be because he has a little trouble with the curveball.
- 9:39He hangs a lot of them, gives up a lot of long balls, a lot of home runs.
- 9:43I think he's given up 23 already this year.
- 9:46And I think the slider might be an easier pitch for him to control.
- 9:50So he's trying to, you know, get another pitch to go with his good fastball and keep the ball down.
- 9:57Denny can be awfully tough when he keeps the ball down,
- 10:01because he's got good breaking stuff and a good fastball.
- 10:06All right, Sandy, Denny McLean, an accomplished Oregon player,
- 10:11is now pitching to Mike Andrews, who will be 24 years old tomorrow.
- 10:16He's one of the old men on this Boston ball club.
- 10:19Andrews batting 254, has three homers, 16 RBI.
- 10:23This is his rookie season. He played for Dick Williams at Toronto last year.
- 10:32He's a line drive type hitter, an excellent punter.
- 10:35He leads the American League to sacrifice punts for 12,
- 10:39and he led the International League to sacrifice punts last year.
- 10:43Andrews, boy, you're scrimpsy for the Red Sox in the top of the first.
- 10:51And he bloops it out in the center. It's going to drop for a base hit.
- 10:54He hit a curveball.
- 10:57Picked up out there by Mickey Stanley, so there goes your no hitter.
- 11:00The leadoff batter of the game, my hand is on first.
- 11:04And Joe Foy coming up, batting 231 with 12 homers, 28 runs batted in.
- 11:11Foy got off to a very slow start.
- 11:15He has now been hitting over 300, though, in his last 30 game.
- 11:18He's coming along, and the Red Sox think he'll have a solid second half of the season with a bat.
- 11:25He's a straightaway hitter, has a lot of power to left center and right center.
- 11:34Playing cursing with ball one, he's just too big on deck.
- 11:39These are two of the best batting ball clubs in the American League.
- 11:42The Red Sox lead the league in batting,
- 11:45and the Tigers and Red Sox are tied for the lead in home runs in the American League.
- 11:49They meet you at 78 homers.
- 11:52The way it's going with those bats, you have some action,
- 11:55and they both play in ballparks that favor the hitters, Benway Park and Tiger Stadium.
- 12:01One ball, no strikes.
- 12:04Fastball is up high, it's two and nothing.
- 12:10Foy is a New York boy. Foreign Air still lives there.
- 12:15Last time the Red Sox were in New York while they were playing the Yankees,
- 12:19his parents' home burned down.
- 12:24And he went out and helped his parents move.
- 12:28It's a meaningful weekend for him, one that he'll never forget, ball free.
- 12:41Foy looks the ball over well. He led the Red Sox to watch last year.
- 12:45Andrew's the first.
- 12:48Nobody out top of the first inning.
- 12:52He walked on four pitches. Now the Red Sox have runners on first and second.
- 12:56Nobody out.
- 12:59And Carl Yaspersky coming up.
- 13:02He's been in a slump.
- 13:04He's a streaky hitter. When he gets hot, oh, he can be as hot as anyone in baseball.
- 13:09And he can cool off and have his problem.
- 13:14He had only one hit in his last 19 times up, but he's still right up there in the batting title race, hitting 313.
- 13:22Frank Robinson leads the league with 337, Yaspersky's third in batting.
- 13:31Right away for him, he's pulling the ball more this year than he has in the past.
- 13:36He used to be almost a dead opposite field hitter.
- 13:40Right to him.
- 13:43Vaniglia will be on deck. Andrew's is the second.
- 13:46Boy up first. Nobody out.
- 13:57Yaspersky's had 18 homers.
- 14:00He had 20 the entire season last year. He's knocked in 54 runs.
- 14:07A one-strike delivery. There's a line shot.
- 14:10Cash has it. Roach the second.
- 14:12And back to first.
- 14:15He was going for the triple play. He had a six-double play at first.
- 14:19He flipped over to Andrews, and Andrews is double off.
- 14:22But Ray Euler, the shortstop, making the play.
- 14:26Cash had visions of a triple play at that time.
- 14:29He saw he had easily doubled off first.
- 14:32Boy, all he had to do was run over there and step on the bag.
- 14:35But he was hoping to get the toss to second and then back to him at first for the triple play.
- 14:40And that was a fairly close play at second for the double play.
- 14:53Quickly two down on a line drive, and here's Canigliaro up,
- 14:56and he's been the hottest batter for the Red Sox.
- 14:59He's hit five homers his last nine games.
- 15:03Boy, getting back.
- 15:11He had also 30 runs batted in in his last 26 games.
- 15:15In other words, he's been getting an RBI for every ball game.
- 15:19He got off to a slow start, and then he went into the service for two weeks to set him back.
- 15:24Right, he's still a baby.
- 15:42He's had a play with the Red Sox at 64, and he's only 22 years old.
- 15:53Boy, at first two down, no score.
- 15:57One ball, one strike.
- 16:09Canigliaro has not been injured this year.
- 16:12He's had a penance for getting bones broken.
- 16:15He's had three broken bones.
- 16:18High fly, right center.
- 16:19Mickey Stanley galloping over, all good in and that's a fire as a start.
- 16:24No run.
- 16:25One hit for the Red Sox.
- 16:26There were no errors, and one man left.
- 16:28Medal of the first inning, our score.
- 16:30The Red Sox, nothing that baggers are coming to back.
- 16:38You're new in the Legion, huh?
- 16:40Yeah.
- 16:41Why did you join?
- 16:43Went out of town one day.
- 16:45Business. Took the family's right guard with me.
- 16:49You left your whole family defenseless?
- 16:53Yeah.
- 16:54Get off my sand dune.
- 16:56Gillette right guard.
- 16:58The perfect personal family deodorant, because nothing touches you but the spray itself.
- 17:03Don't leave your family defenseless.
- 17:05Get an extra Gillette right guard.
- 17:10Oh, am I getting a terrible shave?
- 17:18Oh, am I getting a terrible shave?
- 17:23Here, Henry, stop that moaning.
- 17:28Oh, am I getting a wonderful shave?
- 17:36Oh.
- 17:40Lee Stang warming up.
- 17:42Sandy Kovacs on Mr. Stang.
- 17:44Kurt Stang is three and five this year.
- 17:46He's had a sore arm all spring.
- 17:48They think he's come around now.
- 17:51He's a sinker-slider type pitcher.
- 17:54He'll throw that fastball inside and try and move the right-hand hitters back a little bit,
- 17:58try and make you hit the slider, which is probably his best pitch.
- 18:02Stang will throw an overhand curveball mostly to the left-hand hitters.
- 18:08He doesn't throw too many to the right-hand hitters,
- 18:10but he'll try and throw that straight overhand curveball to the left-handers as a third pitch to them.
- 18:18Lenny Green, 13th professional baseball season, leading off for the Tigers,
- 18:25called up from their Toledo Farm Club, and the first pitch is in there for a strike.
- 18:32K-line out, Gates Brown is out, Willie Horton is ailing.
- 18:36He may not play regular the rest of the year.
- 18:38Tigers were just with their outfielders, so they made a trade to get better than Jim Landis
- 18:42and brought Lenny Green up.
- 18:44Green was released by the Red Sox.
- 18:46He hit that on the line to Mike Andrews, and there's one down.
- 18:50And Green has been hitting that ball since the Tigers brought him up.
- 18:53That's what he's been coming through for.
- 18:56Here's Jerry Lumpy, batting 191.
- 19:00Here's another line drive back there.
- 19:05Don Wirt, the regular third baseman of the Tigers, has a full hamstring muscle.
- 19:09The Lumpy's in the lineup.
- 19:16One-half, nobody on. Ball one.
- 19:24Remember how small Bobby Shands used to be?
- 19:26Well, this fellow's not much bigger. He weighs about 162, 63 pounds.
- 19:32One-oh delivery. Strike.
- 19:35Peewee, I think by the time he hangs in this ball game when it's over,
- 19:38he'll weigh about 154, 55 in his hot day.
- 19:42He understands a good chance of losing a little bit, because it's not inhuman here to drive today,
- 19:46but usually these little fellows can take it better than the big ones.
- 19:51Blowing away, ball two, strike one to Jerry Lumpy, Dick McCollough on deck.
- 19:57These Tigers are loaded with left-handed batters.
- 20:03We have five of them in their lineup. Two-one fits. Half the letter is two and two.
- 20:16Stang's been with the twins and the Indians.
- 20:23Two-two fits. Now we go three and two to Jerry Lumpy.
- 20:39One-out, nobody on.
- 20:45Wraps it sharply to George Scott. George makes the play and he's there, two down.
- 20:53George Scott of Greenville, Mississippi, told us today that his mother's watching him play.
- 20:58She bought a television set, especially for this game.
- 21:02My mother's name's Magnolia, and he says, say hello to my mom.
- 21:05She's looking in, never seen me play in the big leagues before, and he says,
- 21:10I've got to get a couple long taters for today. I've got to get two long hits and make two good plays in the field for us.
- 21:17So we'll see how he does today. He's played a fielding first base.
- 21:21Two down, nobody on, and Dick McCollough up batting, two-fifty-two.
- 21:27Here the fellow never looks too comfortable to play, does he, T.W.?
- 21:31No, he doesn't. I would say there's a very unusual stance of you watching now.
- 21:35He looks like a cigar, cigars go in in that there, but he can swing them back.
- 21:41He pops it up for this fellow right. Tony Canigliero's there.
- 21:47And it's an easy one-two-three inning for Lee Stang.
- 21:50The Tigers three-up, three-down at the end of the first inning to score.
- 21:53The Red Sox nothing, and the Tigers nothing.
- 22:01It's not how long you make it. It's how you make it long.
- 22:14Now Winston makes a super game with a taste that's Winston good.
- 22:20Yes, now Winston makes an extra-long cigarette that tastes good, like only a Winston could,
- 22:26with an extra measure of the famous quality that has made Winston America's largest selling cigarette.
- 22:35Anyone can make a long cigarette, but just length alone won't give you the taste you're looking for.
- 22:41Remember, it's not how long you make it. It's how you make it long.
- 22:50Pick up a pack of new super king-size Winstons today.
- 22:54Tastes good. It's good. It's Winston.
- 23:04And here's George Scott now, Greenville, Mississippi up.
- 23:08Heading 293, he's at 10 homers, 40 runs batted in.
- 23:20When he gets a hold of one, he can ride it about as far as anybody in the game.
- 23:30All one doing, it'll be Scott Petticelli and Reggie Smith for the Red Sox in a second.
- 23:42Little change-up, backhanded by McLean, tosses him out, and we have one down.
- 23:48Here's the starting shortstop for the American League in the All-Star Game at Anaheim Tuesday, Rico Petticelli.
- 23:55The strike, he's been out of action about 10 days. He was hit on the wrist, the right wrist. You can see it taped up.
- 24:04And he broke back into the lineup last night.
- 24:11One ball, one strike, Petticelli batting 300, has eight homers, 33 RBI.
- 24:18Red Sox have four of the top 10 batters in the American League.
- 24:24And he hits that on the line, the shortstop, two down.
- 24:30Ray Orler has been playing a mess of shortstop for the Tigers the last month.
- 24:35Reggie Smith coming up, a boy who led the International League in batting last year with a 320 average, is off to a slow start.
- 24:42But he's starting to come around. He's a switch hitter, batting 216.
- 24:51He can run, too. He was drafted out of the Minnesota Twins organization by the Red Sox.
- 24:58Ball one, two down, nobody on, no score, top of the second, MVC's Major League Baseball.
- 25:09One and one to him.
- 25:23One-one pitch to Reggie Smith is two and one. Al McLean has allowed 23 homers this year, one every five innings.
- 25:33Last year he gave up 42 homers, the most homeruns given up by a pitcher in the Major League.
- 25:40He has that gopher ball problem. Bounding ball to Norm Cash.
- 25:45Does it on his own, and the Red Sox are three up, three down in the second.
- 25:49In the middle of the second inning, the score is the Red Sox nothing, the Tigers nothing.
- 25:58No matter what your mode of travel or how much luxury you've grown accustomed to,
- 26:04it's easy to get carried away by the long, fine-car looks of Plymouth Fury
- 26:11and by a price that seems meager to anyone who appreciates sport luxury.
- 26:16Fury's a distinctive car everywhere. Big for the low price field.
- 26:24Big on extra value features.
- 26:30And under the luxury, lightweight.
- 26:35The most powerful standard V8 in its class, all of which accounts for the great popularity of Fury 67.
- 26:44Plymouth is out to win you over this year. Follow your heart, see your Plymouth dealer today.
- 26:57He didn't get last night's scores here. In 11 innings, the Tigers beat the Red Sox 5-4.
- 27:02It was Cleveland 6, Washington 3, New York shut out, Baltimore 3-0, White Sox nipped Minnesota 2-1.
- 27:09The Angels took a double header from the A's 7-2, 8-2. We'll give the nationally scores a little bit later.
- 27:14And those Angels really got red hot the last month, did we?
- 27:18They certainly have, Kurt. They were 1,200 or 1,500 just not too long ago.
- 27:22And it looked to me like Mr. Rigney, the manager, may be in a little trouble.
- 27:26But right now, he's got that ball club along and they're only 6 behind. They're 43 and 40.
- 27:31This ball club is ready to move. Glad to see it for Bill Rigney's sake.
- 27:36And we'll be out in Anaheim Tuesday. That's the home of the Angels for the annual All-Star Game.
- 27:41It will be seen on NBC television and heard on NBC radio.
- 27:45Andy and I will be there to cover the game.
- 27:50And we're looking forward to having Buddy Blattner, the very fine broadcaster of the California Angels,
- 27:55working with us on both television and radio. Top man, buddy.
- 27:58There's a high fly, center field, Reggie Smith calling for it. And Norm Cash flies out on the first pitch and the last for the second.
- 28:09The gray fox coming up. Jim Northrup. He's young, but he's starting to get those gray hairs.
- 28:17He gets some pitchers gray hairs, too. He's batting 276.
- 28:21Or Homer's 31 RBI. He'll spray the ball around. He hits with power to left center.
- 28:31He had the mumps a few weeks ago.
- 28:37One out, nobody on. Lee Stang's pitch. He's ball one to him. Bill Freehand is on deck.
- 28:54A strike to him, one and one. Northrup graduated from Elm College, Elm of Michigan.
- 29:01He won letters in five sports. Quite an athlete. One one pitch to him.
- 29:09Strike. We're about as close to the playing field here as any broadcast location in the Major League.
- 29:17Our NBC booth is suspended just above the Tiger on deck circle.
- 29:24You can almost reach out down there. Looking right down at Bill Freehand now, right down below him.
- 29:32They're talking about that. You better watch his left-handed hitters, or we may get a little line driving this booth.
- 29:37And I know that you'll be the first one to jump up there and grab it.
- 29:41I'll be the first one under the table.
- 29:44That's right. For years here, I've worked here, Peewee, and you've got to watch out.
- 29:49These liners, wow, come up here. They really come up here. Strike free to Northrup. Two down.
- 29:58Slow motion to Northrup's swing.
- 30:03That's got under that pitch.
- 30:10Two down, nobody on, and Bill Freehand up.
- 30:14He'll be the starting catcher in the All-Star game for the American League.
- 30:21He's on his way to a record that is not too pleasant.
- 30:26Ball one, he's been hit 12 times this year, and the Tiger record for being hit most times in the season by a pitcher of 17 held by Heine Menouch back in 1923.
- 30:40We have no score, last to the second.
- 30:44Ball two.
- 30:45It looks like every time we show a slow motion shot of a batter, he always swings over the top of the ball.
- 30:51Wasn't a ball player one time had his shoes built up because he kept swinging over the top of the ball?
- 31:03Downing ball to Joe Foy at third. Fires across to Scott, and that's it. They're down one, two, three in the last of the second inning.
- 31:11So at the end of the second, the score, nothing to nothing.
- 31:21The Gillette Tecmatic Razor costs $295. Ask your face about it.
- 31:29How about it?
- 31:30I thought you'd never ask. I want one.
- 31:33Why?
- 31:34Look, I can't stand pressure. The lighter a razor feels, the better I feel. And this Tecmatic feels very light.
- 31:42Now, Knicks. Do you know what one Nick can do to my pride? With the Tecmatic, you're just not going to Nick me so much. That's a fact.
- 31:50You're very sensitive.
- 31:52Yes. Another thing about the Tecmatic, this crank, it unwinds a super stainless steel band. It's so easy.
- 31:59You won't keep shaving me with a worn out edge just because you are too lazy to get nasty, too lazy to change blades while you're shaving.
- 32:08You'll flip that lever. Hey, you really do want a Gillette Tecmatic, don't you?
- 32:13Why didn't you say so before? Oh, faces should be seen, not heard.
- 32:22We want to remind you that the telecast and broadcast time of the All-Star Game Tuesday will be 7 o'clock Eastern Daylight Time, 6 o'clock Central, 5 o'clock Mountain, and 4 o'clock Pacific Time, Tuesday, July 11th, another NBC Sports exclusive.
- 32:39Mike Bryan from Haverhill, Massachusetts. Leading off, you'll be followed by Lee Stang, and then to the top of the order from Mike Andrews.
- 32:48They have no score. Red Sox have the only hit of the game.
- 32:52We're in the top of the third.
- 32:55Ball one.
- 32:57Playing using a lot of slow stuff, mixing it up with his fastball so far.
- 33:06Ryan caught a game recently. He didn't know it, but he had a dislocated knuckle.
- 33:11And knocked him three runs during the game.
- 33:14One ball, one strike, they had to put the knuckle back in place after the game.
- 33:19Played by the left, that knuckle out of place.
- 33:26Ground ball to third baseman Jerry Lumpy.
- 33:28It's flipped across and we have one down.
- 33:32And officially Stang comes out. It reminds me, Pee Wee, of the 1950 All-Star Game in Chicago.
- 33:38He probably played in that game. Ted Williams crashed into the wall at Comiskey Park and fractured his elbow.
- 33:44And they had to operate on him a few days later and they took about, oh, three or four inches of elbow bone out.
- 33:51And he stayed in that game and swung the bat and got a line by a single with a fractured elbow.
- 33:56Yes, I do remember that I was there. Of course Williams, imagine he could hit right now. He hit.350 to put him back in uniform.
- 34:05Ball one. A lot of people wonder about Ted. What's he doing? Where he is?
- 34:10He makes his winter home in Isla Morada, Florida and he's in Lakeville, Massachusetts right now.
- 34:16He has a boys' camp there in Cape Cod.
- 34:19And so he combines between the two. One ball, one strike.
- 34:26Did Ted Williams ever think about managing the Red Sox? I'm sure he could have had the job if he wanted.
- 34:32He never wanted to manage. He said he would never want to manage and wanted no part of it.
- 34:38So they get another Williams. Right.
- 34:44One out, nobody on. One ball, one strike.
- 34:49That's right. Williams always said, I might have had a little problem with the press. No.
- 34:59One ball, two strikes. The Lee Stang, one out, nobody on.
- 35:07That's a ball, two and two. The twins and the White Sox are underway. No score at the end of the first inning.
- 35:14Merritt against Johns. Washington scoreless in their first inning. They're playing at Cleveland. It'll be Joe Coleman against Louis Tion.
- 35:25The rest of the actions tonight in the American League. All three to the opposing figure.
- 35:30In the National League, the Pirates are leading Cincinnati 2-0 at the end of the first inning.
- 35:34Norigo against Sisk. Los Angeles and San Francisco haven't started.
- 35:39And the rest of the National League games are tonight.
- 35:43Three and two pitch to Lee Stang. A walk-in. Lost him with the head on the count.
- 35:50The runner-on first, one out. Mike Andrews coming up. You know, before the game we asked Dick Williams, the rookie manager of the Red Sox,
- 35:58if he thought the Red Sox would stay in contention the rest of the year.
- 36:02Kurt, I think we'll get stronger as we go along. We've been losing a lot of one-run ball games and winning an awful lot the past couple of weeks.
- 36:12But this ball club doesn't give up. It's a young ball club. It's gaining experience as the season progresses.
- 36:18And our pitching is getting stronger as we go along. So I look for us to be up in contention the full year.
- 36:25Ball one. By the way, Dick's mother, Mrs. Hodl, from San Gabriel Valley in Alph... let's see... Arcadia, California, in Alphadena.
- 36:45Watching Dick today, we understand. NBC outlet out there.
- 36:52He played with Dick, did he?
- 36:55Yes, sir, I certainly did. And I saw him when he'd go for a ball in Edmonds Field. I heard he showed and I think he'd been a real fine outfielder.
- 37:04Andrews takes ball two, two and one.
- 37:07It was nice to hear Bobby Dorough, the great second baseman for the Red Sox for a number of years, who's now coaching for him at first base,
- 37:13say that he thought that Williams had to take full credit for this ball club doing what it has done this year.
- 37:19He's done a real great job in getting this ball club to be in the country club and to be a real contender.
- 37:26Andrews hits that fly ball to Nicky Stanley.
- 37:29And a fielder, two down. Stangs it first. And Joe Foy up one.
- 37:36This game comes to you from Tiger Stadium in Detroit, live and in color, exclusively on NBC.
- 37:50We have no score.
- 37:53We're at the top of the third inning. The Red Sox have two down and Lee Stangs it first.
- 38:00Foy's still batting two thirty-one.
- 38:07He's right, he's caught that bad high up there, doesn't he?
- 38:11Just noticing that, Kurt, we were talking about it a while ago, you know, Stemsky and Reggie Smith, a lot of them have that closed stance a little bit like Ted Williams.
- 38:20I guess he's taught this ball club his frame of mind, hasn't he?
- 38:23Not only that, he's worked with them, you know, down the minors. They're the high fly to straightaway center.
- 38:28Stanley has flipped those sunglasses down.
- 38:32That's it.
- 38:34Three put-outs for center fielder Stanley so far. And the Red Sox are all out on the third.
- 38:38They had no runs, no hits, there were no errors, but one man left.
- 38:42So in the middle of the third inning, the score, the Red Sox nothing and the Tigers nothing.
- 38:47Now Winston makes a super king, a Winston super king.
- 39:01Did you say Winston makes a super king, a super king-size Winston?
- 39:05Yes, Winston makes a super king with a taste that's Winston good.
- 39:09It's not how long you make it.
- 39:16It's how you make it long. So try a Winston super king.
- 39:24Anyone can make a long cigarette.
- 39:29But it's not how long you make it, it's how you make it long.
- 39:32And only Winston can give you an extra measure of the famous quality that has made Winston America's largest selling cigarette.
- 39:39Pick up a tall, golden red pack of new super king-size Winstons today.
- 39:44Taste good. It's good. It's Winston.
- 39:51The Tigers bottom of the order coming up in the last of the third inning. Stanley, Euler, and McLean facing Lee Stang.
- 40:05Stang's 30 years old, lives now in St. Louis Park, Minnesota.
- 40:09The boys facing Mickey Stanley can really play a marvelous defensive out there.
- 40:15His hitting has been doubtful.
- 40:19He can go get that ball, batting to 18.
- 40:23Four homers, 14 RBI.
- 40:30Ball one. Stang attended Drake University, played baseball, basketball, and football there.
- 40:37This is his 11th pro season.
- 40:40He came to the Red Sox last year along with Don McMahon and the trade for Dick Raddatz.
- 40:45In fact, the Indians have given the Red Sox two starters, Stang and Gary Bell.
- 40:51They've needed some pitching.
- 40:53And they suddenly have come up with the best pitching staff they've had in a long time.
- 40:57They're about third or fourth in the league now in team pitching.
- 41:04They've played the last 20-some games, nobody has scored over three runs a game on them, or over four.
- 41:10They're getting good, steady pitches.
- 41:13High pop-up. George Scott, the first baseman.
- 41:17Foul ground, one out.
- 41:21The next batter, batting 208, no homers, 14 RBI.
- 41:31Laying the pitcher will be up next.
- 41:46Ball one.
- 41:56One out, nobody on.
- 42:00And the third.
- 42:07Stang's lifetime record against the Tigers is five wins, six losses.
- 42:14Two and one, Ray Euler, OY LER.
- 42:31A two-one delivery.
- 42:33Three and one now.
- 42:37He doesn't walk many.
- 42:41He gives up about two walks every night hitting three pitches.
- 42:49And now he's behind three and one to Ray Euler.
- 42:53Way in two.
- 43:06Pretty good crowd here today, Saturday afternoon, Tiger Stadium.
- 43:11Three-two delivery.
- 43:13Bounding ball, Petticelli.
- 43:19And Euler's on.
- 43:23That's an error, charge to Rico Petticelli.
- 43:33So, George Scott, Reese analyzed this one for you.
- 43:36Well, you can take a look.
- 43:37He got to, he didn't get a short hop.
- 43:38He got about a three-quarter hop, and that's the toughest play you can get from a shortstop.
- 43:43And Rico couldn't find the handle.
- 43:48Say one thing about this, Kurt, this young shortstop you've been telling me about.
- 43:51He can hit that curve ball.
- 43:52If he can hit the curve ball, you're going to be a good hitter.
- 43:59Pressed the button, fouled it off.
- 44:04Mike Andrews diving in.
- 44:12Rico's elbow.
- 44:16We have no score.
- 44:29After the third inning here, the Tigers have one out, Ray Euler at first base.
- 44:36And the count is nothing in one to Dennis McLean.
- 44:51There's a take at the right field.
- 44:54They're stopping a runner at second.
- 44:56It's Kanigale Aero Petticelli.
- 44:58Dennis McLean, a pitcher, against the first hit for the Tigers.
- 45:03Runners on first and second, and Lenny Green coming up.
- 45:08He was batting 0-68.
- 45:13He'll be talking about that one for a month.
- 45:17Looks like Stang tried to throw him a high fastball, Kurt, making it difficult to butt it.
- 45:21And a high fastball is probably a little easier to hit it.
- 45:27Oh, the Detroit Tigers have a threat going on, the last of the third, with one down, runners on first and second.
- 45:51A strike to Lenny Green. Lined out the second his first time.
- 45:57Lenny didn't have too far to go to join the Tigers. He was playing at Toledo.
- 46:02His home is here in Detroit, and he was commuting to Toledo to play minor league baseball.
- 46:12There's a blooper to left at the base hit.
- 46:14Coming in the score, the Swenski throw comes through the side of the line.
- 46:23Holding the second base is McLean.
- 46:27Lenny Green really filling the bill for the injured Gates Brown and Willie Horton.
- 46:36There's been quite a job since they brought him up.
- 46:42The Tigers lead now one to nothing.
- 46:46Runners on first and second one out, Jerry Lump, he's grounded out his first time.
- 47:15Ball back, strike one.
- 47:19I heard that you were talking about a while ago that the cross ball club has put five left-henders to start this lineup.
- 47:25We saw it here last night.
- 47:27Dick Williams came to the left-hander the first opportunity he had.
- 47:31I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he does it today.
- 47:33There's no one, no accident to pull up in right now though.
- 47:39Strike fifth, hammered foul on the ground, strike two.
- 47:45Now Williams is moaning a daze.
- 47:49I wish I had a couple left-hander starters to throw at these fellows in this ballpark.
- 47:52The Red Sox, this Mel Parnell retired.
- 47:56Oh, I've always had trouble coming up with a left-hander starting pitcher.
- 47:59They've pushed the ballparks against the left-hander there in Boston,
- 48:03but they've never been able to get any left-handers on their staff.
- 48:06Good starters.
- 48:08You see them against clubs here like the Tigers and the White Sox.
- 48:13Yankees have a better on all those fellows.
- 48:16One ball, two strikes.
- 48:18Do you think the Red Sox maybe sometime built their ball club around their home park in Boston?
- 48:27I believe most of the time.
- 48:29I think most clubs do though, don't they, do you?
- 48:33Do I have to answer that?
- 48:37I mean you play after games there, you should take advantage of these.
- 48:43Geography, one ball, two strikes.
- 48:45Yankees always look for those left-handed full-headers.
- 48:47The Dodgers, when they moved to L.A., they wanted speed and pitching out there, didn't they, Sandy?
- 48:52Yes they did, Kurt, and the Yankees always had pretty good left-handed pitching.
- 48:59Tigers like the left-handed full-headers here.
- 49:03It's only 325 down the line.
- 49:06The first thing that came to my mind was the old Dodgers, of course, you can always talk about because playing with them is so long.
- 49:11We had eight or seven right-handed hitters and we had a right-field fence about 290.
- 49:19Change-up full, Jerry Loughlin struck you out.
- 49:21That's right, Snyder was the only one to really take aim on that fence, wasn't he?
- 49:24That's right, of course, as you've said many of the time, it was a band box anyway.
- 49:31That way I have to needle you a little bit.
- 49:35Two down.
- 49:37Right-hander's at first and second and Dick McCullough's about to flat out his first time.
- 49:42Tigers are leading 1-0 here and the last to the third.
- 49:59Ball in, McCullough.
- 50:07It's funny sometimes what misfortune can do to a person, an organization, or an athletic team.
- 50:16And misfortune right now seems to sort of spur the Tigers on.
- 50:19It's right.
- 50:22They have one-five in a row, seven of their last nine without K-line and Willie Horton and Gates Brown in the lineup.
- 50:32The boys all knew they all had to bear down harder to make up for their absence.
- 50:37One-and-one to Dick McCullough.
- 50:41The Plains at second, plenty of greens at first.
- 50:45Her ball missing. Two-and-one.
- 51:06Two down.
- 51:08Two-one pitch.
- 51:10Three-and-one going.
- 51:14Norman Cash on deck.
- 51:16Into two innings, the Twins and the Whitesides. No score.
- 51:37Three-one delivery.
- 51:39Ops it up. Outside of first base, George Scott. Waiting for that one to come down.
- 51:46So Stang gets out of the jam.
- 51:49In the third, the Tigers had one run, two hits, one Red Sox error, and two men left.
- 51:57At the end of the third inning, the score of the Tigers, one and the Red Sox, nothing.
- 52:041965. Remember the Indianapolis 500? Rookie Jimmy Clark won in record time.
- 52:11The entire Northeast went dark in history's biggest blackout.
- 52:15Women discovered the miniskirt, and Paul Benson tried Ballantine beer for the first time.
- 52:21It's okay, but I still like my beer better.
- 52:24Now that bothered us, so we did something about it.
- 52:271967, and Paul Benson tries Ballantine again.
- 52:31Now that's a great glass of beer. What'd they do?
- 52:34We improved. It's not easy to make a good beer better, but we did it.
- 52:401967 Ballantine is so good, it's now a premium beer. And it says so right on the label.
- 52:46Ballantine's got the flavor that's in. Hey friends, do it again. Ballantine beer.
- 52:55Hey friends, do it again. Ballantine, Ballantine beer.
- 53:00Ballantine premium beer.
- 53:05We pause briefly for station identification. This is the NBC television network.
- 53:11Channel 6 Connected.
- 53:18Kurt Gowdy, Pee Wee, Reece Sandicoffax with you again from Tiger Stadium.
- 53:22As we're going to the fourth inning, Yastremski, Kanigaleiro, and Scott up for the Red Sox.
- 53:27There's Carl Yastremski, won a batting title three years ago.
- 53:31Before the game, we ask him his chance of winning another American League batting championship.
- 53:35Well Kurt, I don't want to predict anything. Right now I'm down about 315, 314, somewhere in that area.
- 53:42Plus you have Tony Oliva coming in on strong, hitting the ball well.
- 53:47Expect him to improve, and also you have Kalei and Robinson.
- 53:50It's a tough thing to say. You just go out and put out 100% every day, and let's see what happens.
- 53:55They all want a pennant.
- 53:58Well, they all want a pennant, Boston. They want one here in Detroit, too.
- 54:02They haven't had them for a long time.
- 54:07Carl hit it and lined into a double play his first time.
- 54:10Oh, and we have a wire here from Winter Haven, Florida. That's the spring training base of the Red Sox.
- 54:19Winter Haven, Florida, very proud of the time record of the team, offers heartiest congratulations.
- 54:26There's a line drive in the gap in right center.
- 54:29That ball is going back to the wall. Yastremski's going in a second, and he has a stand-up double.
- 54:35He's led the American League in doubles three of the last four years.
- 54:42The telegram was signed, George Parton, Jr., president of Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce. Thank you.
- 54:49Tony Canigliaro flied out to center field his first time.
- 54:53That was Yastremski's 16th double over here.
- 55:09You ever hear one of his rock and roll records, Canigliaro?
- 55:13No, I haven't heard.
- 55:14What a good rock singer.
- 55:24How's it out of place, back one?
- 55:28Last winter, Tony, he's never been much of it.
- 55:34Yastremski's second, a hunter of fishermen, and a friend of his, a pilot with one of the airlines,
- 55:40talked him into going over to Africa on a safari.
- 55:43Tony said it cost me $5,000, but it was worth it.
- 55:47He had the time of his life, went on a six-week safari.
- 55:51One ball, one strike.
- 55:54Must be single, isn't it?
- 55:56He is.
- 56:02Dennis McLean pitching to Tony Canigliaro with the Tigers ahead one to nothing.
- 56:06We're in the fourth inning.
- 56:08Yastremski's on second, nobody out.
- 56:19Slow ball, a little bit high, two and one.
- 56:32Canigliaro, he attacks the ball, he sticks his head right over that plate, charges right into it.
- 56:39He's aggressive at the plate. Three and one to him now.
- 56:54Yastremski getting his lead.
- 56:58Fourth inning, NBC's Major League Baseball. Hope you're enjoying the game this Saturday.
- 57:06Fly ball out to Mickey Stanley. Yastremski's tagging a second.
- 57:10Stanley's deep, grabs it, is firing a third.
- 57:13Good throw, a little bit off. Yastremski's in the third base.
- 57:17That's the fourth putout for Mickey Stanley.
- 57:20Now the Red Sox have a tying run at third with one down.
- 57:24And George Scott coming up, rolled out to the pitcher his first time.
- 57:34He explains doing one thing to you, he's making those batters hit that ball straight away for the most part.
- 57:40Yes he is, Curtin. I was thinking that with a count three and one on Canigliaro.
- 57:45He's been hot lately.
- 57:47I didn't think he would get too good of a pitch to hit.
- 57:49Of course that was not a bad pitch, he's a curve ball out away from him.
- 57:52That fooled him a little bit.
- 57:54Of course George Scott is no soft touch.
- 57:57They're appealing a second base.
- 58:03And the second base umpire, Stephen Gelover to the first base umpire who had called to play.
- 58:11The second base umpire was going out to watch the play in center field.
- 58:14So Springstead had been covering, watching the runner tag a second, a strike.
- 58:21And they said Yastremski's tag all right went on to third, didn't leave too soon.
- 58:26One strike to George Scott.
- 58:33Yastremski a third, one down.
- 58:40Scott hitting 292.
- 58:44Flows the fastball in there, oh and two.
- 58:50Scott last year hit a lot of home runs early in the year.
- 58:55He was going downtown on every pitch.
- 58:57Now he's just trying to hit the ball back to the middle this year and hit the right field.
- 59:00He struck out a lot last year.
- 59:04Every now and then he'll take a big ripple though.
- 59:07No balls, just strikes.
- 59:16That hurts Kurt.
- 59:28You got the man on third and less than two out and you don't get a piece of the ball.
- 59:32He's got no chance.
- 59:35I would say he did a pretty good job of pitching too.
- 59:37He just got through curving Penigliari two or three times there.
- 59:41And Scott may have been looking for a curveball.
- 59:43He hit him two fastballs and I guess he was still waiting for that curveball.
- 59:46He threw him three fastballs, he took all three of them.
- 59:49And Feticelli takes ball one.
- 59:53Two down, Yastremski a third.
- 59:54Yastremski led off this inning with a double.
- 59:56The Tigers are ahead one to nothing.
- 59:59Fourth inning.
- 1:00:08The Panthers slow and two and oh. The Twins and the White Sox now have gone three innings, no score.
- 1:00:16Jim Merritt against Tommy John.
- 1:00:19Washington leads Cleveland two to nothing at the end of an inning and a half.
- 1:00:23Pirates lead the Reds two to nothing at the end of two and a half.
- 1:00:27The only other game's going.
- 1:00:32Blaine boring that fastball through. A two and one count to Rico Feticelli.
- 1:00:39Rico says his two greatest thrills in life.
- 1:00:43He had twin boys here a few weeks ago and ended up being picked for the All-Star team.
- 1:00:54Two one pitch.
- 1:00:56That one just missed three and one to Feticelli.
- 1:01:05Yastremski on third, two down.
- 1:01:18Three one delivery.
- 1:01:30Tell me that Feticelli's a Brooklyn boy?
- 1:01:33Right, he used to go out and he was telling me today, he said, Pee Wee used to be one of my heroes when I was a little boy.
- 1:01:42He used to go out and watch you fellas play all the time. He's a Brooklyn boy.
- 1:01:46Kurt Pee Wee was one of my heroes when I was a little boy.
- 1:01:50Me too. Three two pitch, ball four.
- 1:01:54Runners on first and third, two down. Reggie Smith coming up.
- 1:02:03The Tigers have one run, two hits. The Red Sox have no runs, two hits.
- 1:02:13Smith rounded out his first time, batting 215.
- 1:02:21Smith began as a shortstop, went to third base. He has one of the most powerful throwing arms you'll ever want to see.
- 1:02:38Ball one. You can get some argument, of course, that's what makes baseball so much fun. You can argue all the time about things.
- 1:02:45Red Sox players believe that Smith has the strongest throwing arm of anyone in the American League.
- 1:02:50There are the two runners, Yastremski a third, Feticelli a first.
- 1:02:56Two down. The plane has walked three so far.
- 1:03:07And the plane will be pitching one and nothing to Reggie Smith.
- 1:03:12Now it's two and oh.
- 1:03:28Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:03:39Took a little bit off to him that time, two and one.
- 1:03:43Red Sox have lost something. Their last nine losses have been by one run.
- 1:03:49Nine one run losses.
- 1:03:53Last twelve losses have been by one run. The tenth.
- 1:04:00Got to be tenth.
- 1:04:04The two-one pitch.
- 1:04:06Fly ball to the opposite field.
- 1:04:08Lenny Green's waiting for it.
- 1:04:11And that's all for the Red Sox in the fourth.
- 1:04:13No runs, one hit. There were no errors, two left.
- 1:04:16The middle of the fourth inning the score, the Tigers won and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:04:23Whatever you're now driving, even if it's your pride and joy, your spirits will soar when you get one over to Barracuda.
- 1:04:30The all-new Clintus Quartz car that's as wild as a European GC.
- 1:04:35This Formula S version is a wild one with a Fender 273 cubic inch V8 for an optional 383.

- 1:04:50An interior that could only have been designed by motion experts.
- 1:04:54There's no seeing it without trying it because Barracuda is the sports car you can easily afford.
- 1:05:05He's out to win you over this year. Follow your heart, see your Flemish dealer today.
- 1:05:17Barracuda, so wild it's created a following all its own.
- 1:05:23Tomorrow night the Saint goes to jail in a daring attempt to trap a ring of prison escape artists.
- 1:05:30Roger Moore portrays the legendary Simon Templer.
- 1:05:33Tomorrow night at 10, 9 central time right here on NBC.
- 1:05:43Norm Cash, Jim Northrup, Bill Frihan up for the Tigers in the last of the fourth inning.
- 1:05:48Cash fly to center his first time up batting 258.
- 1:06:03Right, you know you look at Cash, you wouldn't think so.
- 1:06:05He's got a football player.
- 1:06:08San Angelo, Texas, junior college.
- 1:06:12He was drafted by the Chicago Bears one time. The ground ball out to Mike Andrews.
- 1:06:19One down. Cash out, Andrews to Scott. Jim Northrup struck out his first time.
- 1:06:31We'll be in Dodger Stadium next Saturday for NBC's Major League Baseball, the Chicago Cubs, and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 1:06:41Four o'clock Eastern Daylight Time.
- 1:06:47Ball in.
- 1:06:56Tigers won the Red Sox nothing, last of the fourth.
- 1:07:00Sharp ground ball down to Scott.
- 1:07:03Flips to stand covering, two down.
- 1:07:07And Bill Frihan coming up now, grounded out his first time.
- 1:07:21One thing that has helped the Red Sox pitching this year has been their best defensive infield in some time.
- 1:07:28That's a solid short. Andrews has stepped in, done a good job with the rookie at second. Scott's fine first baseman, employees very steady at third.
- 1:07:39Ball one.
- 1:07:43And I believe the next pitch will tell you that infield's pretty important, right Sandy?
- 1:07:47Yes it is, Kurt. Those great plays behind you make it a lot easier.
- 1:07:53We'll strike to Frihan, one and one to the big Tiger catcher, Mayo Smith.
- 1:08:03Looking on a new Tiger manager, brand fellow. Two and one.
- 1:08:13Kurt, Phoebe and I were talking, you know, made a comparison between Scott and Hodges.
- 1:08:18But we decided that Scott handles the pop flies a little better. Gill used to shake under pop flies.
- 1:08:24He'd catch bad hobs and ground balls and he hated those pop flies.
- 1:08:29There's the ball, hits sharp with a Joe Foy at third.
- 1:08:33And they're down one, two, three. We're rocking right along here. A brilliant pitching duel between McLean and Stang.
- 1:08:39So at the end of the fourth inning, the score, the Tigers won and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:08:45Young man. Yes, madam. Is this the one they call the spoiler?
- 1:08:51Oh yes, madam. You're absolutely sure? Yes, madam.
- 1:08:55With the miracle plastic coating on the edge? Yes, madam.
- 1:09:00But it doesn't say the spoiler. Madam, I give you my word.
- 1:09:05Thank you. You know, my husband has so much trouble when he shaves. I must tell him about it.
- 1:09:15When you drop your razor, it's like dropping your watch.
- 1:09:28It gets knocked out of alignment. The blade doesn't sit just right.
- 1:09:33You don't know why, but you get nicked.
- 1:09:36So if you've ever dropped your razor hard, you may need a new one.
- 1:09:40Nothing lasts forever, not even a Gillette razor.
- 1:09:46We'll be in Dodger Stadium at the surprising Cubs and the Dodgers play next Saturday.
- 1:09:52Ron Sano, Billy Williams, Ernie Banks, the Cubs team, and the ever-lovable Leo DeRosha face the Dodgers.
- 1:10:01The folks in Chicago and Los Angeles will see the game between Houston and San Francisco.
- 1:10:06It's a late game starting 4 o'clock Eastern Daylight Time, exclusively on NBC.
- 1:10:13And moving in now to take over our play-by-play, another NBC exclusive, Mr. Pee Wee Reese.
- 1:10:21Thank you, Mr. Gowdy. Mike Ryan's the first hitter batting 234.
- 1:10:25It's been all pitching with Dennis McLean giving up two hits and Lee Stang giving up two hits, but the score, the Trot won.
- 1:10:33The Red Sox nothing. The ever-lovable Leo DeRosha.
- 1:10:37I thought you were going to bring me back and say the ever-lovable Pee Wee Reese.
- 1:10:42Curveball. Little high ball, too.
- 1:10:47Sandy, I guess Leo may be listening down in Houston today.
- 1:10:51If you ever happen to play for him, sometimes you don't think he's too lovable.
- 1:10:56Well, the only time I played for him, Pee Wee, was when he was a coach.
- 1:11:00I didn't play for the best manager. He was a lovable sort of coach.
- 1:11:08Two balls, one strike on Mike Ryan, leading things off with the Red Sox in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:11:14He'll be followed by the pitcher-based standing. A real good swing, no contact. Two and two.
- 1:11:19The last time we were in the Trot, we saw Dennis McLean pitch.
- 1:11:26I was thinking then that he may have kept his fast ball and he's breaking stuff down a little bit better then, but he's had real good success.
- 1:11:32I think he's been up the ball a bit more today. He's gotten the breaking ball up a lot, but it's been taken.
- 1:11:39A lot of times, you see that ball hit, you never get to see if the breaking ball is up or not because it gets hit first.
- 1:11:46But Red Sox are taking a lot of high curve balls today.
- 1:11:50This fellow sitting behind the plate, Bill Frien, has something to do with what that pitcher throws, I'm sure.
- 1:11:56And he did a great job on George Scott a while ago. I've thrown him three straight fast balls. Change up in a dandy.
- 1:12:04You could see Mike Ryan was out in front of the off-speed pitch of his fast ball.
- 1:12:11Two and two pitch. He's made good use of it today, Peewee. He's gotten quite a few hitters on change ups.
- 1:12:18And last time we were here, he didn't throw that many. Maybe one or two during the ball game.
- 1:12:22He's probably thrown ten or twelve of them already in the four innings.
- 1:12:26May Stang walked his only time up today.
- 1:12:33Dennis McLean, his only time up today, the line drive base hit out in the right field.
- 1:12:37Pitchers. I like a eagle, but Mr. Stang, a good hitter McLean.
- 1:12:50Fast ball right in there. The ball strike one. And this ball game is moving right along.
- 1:12:54Remember, next Saturday we'll be out in L.A. for a game between the Cubs and the Dodgers.
- 1:13:02The Cubs ran into a little snag lately. They've lost five straight.
- 1:13:08Let's hope they bounce back.
- 1:13:13One strike on Lee Stang.
- 1:13:18In there for a call strike two. And McLean said, I'll not walk to you this time.
- 1:13:26It's a uniform of Stang. It's quite a bit of perspiration on it. It's hot.
- 1:13:33Humid. Dennis McLean talking about Conigliaro.
- 1:13:40Freehand moves outside and the umpire started to come up with that right hand.
- 1:13:45Said it was a little bit too high. One ball and two strikes.
- 1:13:48Kurt, the Conigliaro singer. Dennis McLean's an organ player, isn't he?
- 1:13:54Right. They'd make quite a combo together, wouldn't they, in the offseason?
- 1:13:59Did he say he just made a record or something?
- 1:14:04A lazy looper out in the right field. Jim North repented. Takes it one-handed.
- 1:14:10Tony made some records a couple of years ago. I don't believe he made any last year at all.
- 1:14:14But he was cutting records a couple of years ago for a company.
- 1:14:18Incidentally, McLean, we understand, is opening a new restaurant here.
- 1:14:22And they're going to name it the Upper Deck.
- 1:14:26There you go. Oh.
- 1:14:27The Upper Deck. And they've been kidding him about all the home runs in the Upper Deck.
- 1:14:31He's been giving up here, so that's a good name for the restaurant.
- 1:14:35While talking about the home runs, it off with Dennis McLean.
- 1:14:38He's in pretty good company with Ramis and Robin Roberts. Both of them fine pitchers.
- 1:14:45High fastball will get you in trouble occasionally.
- 1:14:49Andrew, the second baseman, takes the first pitch, two low, ball one.
- 1:14:55Pittsburgh leads Cincinnati 3-0 after three.
- 1:14:59And the American League after two. Washington, Cleveland all tied up 2-2.
- 1:15:03Minnesota, Chicago after four, no score.
- 1:15:09He hit a ripple at that one. One ball and one strike.
- 1:15:15White Sox and the Twins. Those White Sox get some kind of pitching.
- 1:15:24They are never out of the ball game.
- 1:15:28The White Sox, I'm talking about. Curveball, outside.
- 1:15:35Two balls, one strike.
- 1:15:38On Andrew.
- 1:15:40Used to be a shortstop. Moved in the second base and Dixville Williams said that's the spot.
- 1:15:46He looks better there and he did a shortstop.
- 1:15:50Ball hit right back through the middle. McAuliffe up with the ball.
- 1:15:53Flips the ball over Cash and that's all for Andrews.
- 1:15:55And that's all for the Red Sox in the top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:15:58No runs, no hits, no errors and no one left on base.
- 1:16:01We have the four and a half and he's a play. It's the Tribe. One, the Red Sox, nothing.
- 1:16:0813-3-1.
- 1:16:1013-3-1.
- 1:16:1312-9-8.
- 1:16:15Hello. Hi.
- 1:16:17Hey Chuck, look at this.
- 1:16:20Well hello there, old fellow. I wonder what you want us to do.
- 1:16:24Hello, there's a house up there.
- 1:16:26Ready for a real smoke?
- 1:16:28Have a Camel?
- 1:16:29Have a Camel.
- 1:16:30Camel's real taste satisfies longer.
- 1:16:33Have a real cigarette.
- 1:16:35Have a Camel.
- 1:16:38Now there's a new Camel cigarette.
- 1:16:41New Camel filters with a smooth, easy-growing taste.
- 1:16:45Oh, the puppy's gone.
- 1:16:48Where'd he go?
- 1:16:49Here puppy, here puppy. Let's look outside.
- 1:16:51Here, pup.
- 1:16:58New Camel filters are here with real taste.
- 1:17:01And Camel's real taste satisfies longer.
- 1:17:05Taste new Camel filter cigarettes.
- 1:17:10Before the game we talked to Mayo Smith and asked him how's the ball club been doing since he lost Al Kalin,
- 1:17:17here's what he had to say.
- 1:17:18You know, how's your ball club been looking since you lost your star Al Kalin?
- 1:17:22Well actually, Pee-Wee, we've won seven and lost two since Al's been out of the lineup.
- 1:17:26We were very fortunate in coming up with Jim Landis and also Lenny Green due to the injury to Al and Gates Brown.
- 1:17:41The first hitter for the Tigers, Mickey Stanley, the center fielder.
- 1:17:46Having a little trouble that bad but he can go get that ball with the best of him.
- 1:17:50Lee Stang, first pitch to him is outside, ball one.
- 1:17:53For a big fella, he can run.
- 1:18:00Has five stolen bases, has not been thrown out.
- 1:18:05Batting two seventeen, poor home run.
- 1:18:09Ball hit out into right field.
- 1:18:12For Nicolai Arrow right there and takes it for out number one.
- 1:18:18Not too much action in this ball game, it's been mostly pitching.
- 1:18:21And Stang and McLean have taken over.
- 1:18:28Euler, the shortstop batting two oh seven.
- 1:18:34So this youngster last night, he made two or three some kind of plays.
- 1:18:38He can play a lot of shortstop.
- 1:18:42Ball hit off the end of his bat, Andrews up with the ball, flips the ball over to Scott.
- 1:18:46So it's two up and two down here in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:18:52As the Red Sox whip that ball around the in field.
- 1:18:56They have lost three straight.
- 1:19:00The Tigers are in second place behind the White Sox.
- 1:19:10White Sox forty-three and thirty-one and the Tigers forty-three and thirty-four.
- 1:19:14McLean who's got a base hit one for one today.
- 1:19:18Takes a look at his third base coach, Tony Cucinello.
- 1:19:23Mr. Cucinello said he's going to there. He is old Tony.
- 1:19:26He was with Al Lopez for many years.
- 1:19:30Every place that Al managed, Tony Cucinello went with him.
- 1:19:33Said he's going to play a little golf with Mr. Lopez down in Tampa during the All-Star break.
- 1:19:39Take a little bet on Mr. Lopez.
- 1:19:43A little grounder out to Andrews. The ball bounces up on him.
- 1:19:46He comes up with it over to George Scott.
- 1:19:48That's all for McLean and that's all for the Tigers here in the bottom half of the fifth inning.
- 1:19:52No runs, no hits, no errors and no one left on base.
- 1:19:55The score after five completed in Detroit one, Boston nothing.
- 1:19:59Under normal driving conditions, many motor oils will do a good job of protecting your engine.
- 1:20:05But in cold weather, some oils thicken and clog.
- 1:20:10Some grow thin at high temperatures.
- 1:20:13Some break up at high speeds.
- 1:20:16Or even stop and grow trashy.
- 1:20:18But there is one motor oil that never loses its ability to protect your engine.
- 1:20:22Phillips 66, drop article.

- 1:20:54Next time you buy motor oil, get Trapartic motor oil from Phillips 66.
- 1:21:02Let's pause now for station identification.
- 1:21:07Sunday nights too, it's let's make a deal at 8.30, 7.30 Central Time.
- 1:21:141964, and Bill Curtis tried Ballantine beer.
- 1:21:17I like it, but mine tastes better.
- 1:21:191967, and Bill tries Ballantine again.
- 1:21:22Hey, that's great beer. What did they do?
- 1:21:24We improved it. Ballantine is so good, it's now a premium beer.
- 1:21:29And it says so right on the label. Try it.
- 1:21:43Kim Novak and Frederick March meet in the middle of the night tonight at 1115 here on Channel 6.
- 1:21:50Will be the first hitter.
- 1:21:53Batting 230 has 12 home runs.
- 1:21:56Hit 321 during the month of June.
- 1:22:00As you can also see there, the Red Sox have not shown too much of that power today.
- 1:22:10Of course, neither have the Tigers.
- 1:22:13And sometime the pitching has something to do with it.
- 1:22:20Gertrude has some scores.
- 1:22:22Later score over in Chicago, Peewee, the twins in the White Sox, no score at the end of 5.
- 1:22:27Merritt against Tommy John. They're in the sixth inning now at Comiskey Park.
- 1:22:31Alrighty. Joe Foy will be followed by Carl Yostrinsky.
- 1:22:36The high fly out in the center field should be no trouble for Mickey Stanley.
- 1:22:41And takes it for out number one.
- 1:22:44As both clubs are jumping on that first pitch.
- 1:22:51Yostrinsky wants to have the umpire to take a look at the ball.
- 1:22:57As Mr. Ballentine does.
- 1:23:02Mickey Stanley out in center field.
- 1:23:05Had a busy day. He's at five foot outs.
- 1:23:07Yostrinsky batting 314.
- 1:23:10He lined a double in right center his last time up.
- 1:23:13But failed to score.
- 1:23:17You can see this is kind of a close stance. You'll get those hands high in the air.
- 1:23:21Comes down on the pitch.
- 1:23:25Fastball in there for Carl Strachan.
- 1:23:33Yostrinsky doubled his last time up. He lined in a double play.
- 1:23:38His first time up so he's one for two.
- 1:23:43Take a good look at this fella.
- 1:23:46Not a bad hitter.
- 1:23:49He takes one of the hardest cuts in baseball.
- 1:23:52Comes around and hits him in the small of the bat.
- 1:23:56But he really takes a vicious cut. Always has.
- 1:23:59Won a batting title his first year in the Carolina League.
- 1:24:02Lost a batting title the next year in the AAA American Association as one American League batting title.
- 1:24:08He's always up there in each league fighting for the batting chance.
- 1:24:12Little tamper. That pitcher will have to get over there.
- 1:24:14Cash flips the ball to McLean covering and that's all for Carl Yostrinsky.
- 1:24:19Every time I see Yostrinsky, for some reason or another, he reminds me of Ted Williams.
- 1:24:27He used to wear his hat cocked a little bit like Ted always did.
- 1:24:31Swing a little bit like him.
- 1:24:37Worse when you start comparing someone to Ted Williams when they actually swing at bat.
- 1:24:43Not too much of a comparison.
- 1:24:47Even though Yostrinsky is a real fine hitter.
- 1:24:52Speaking of good hitters, there's a pretty good hitter right here. Tony Conigliaro.
- 1:25:00And I wouldn't say that name too often, do we?
- 1:25:04And a tough. I'll call him Tony C.
- 1:25:08Conigliaro, Yostrinsky, Ettracelli.
- 1:25:15Get Reggie Smith up there after a while.
- 1:25:22Tony crowds that plate.
- 1:25:25See what freehand does here.
- 1:25:28Keep that target low a little bit out in front of that good change up at McLean.
- 1:25:32It's two away, two strikes on Conigliaro.
- 1:25:37We're in the top half of the sixth inning here at Tiger Stadium in Detroit.
- 1:25:42And the Tigers scored one in the bottom half of the third inning.
- 1:25:46Boston has failed to score.
- 1:25:50A wide stance by Tony.
- 1:25:56And he crowds the plate.
- 1:26:01Kerrball outside. One ball and two strikes.
- 1:26:08It's a younger brother that's a pretty good ball player.
- 1:26:10Right his brother Billy's in the service now, but he's also a coming star.
- 1:26:20The fastball foul straight back. One and two is the count.
- 1:26:28Pittsburgh now leads Cincinnati five another.
- 1:26:34They came up with two in the fourth.
- 1:26:42The one and two pitch.
- 1:26:46What happens to change up when it gets a little high like that, Sandy?
- 1:26:50What's the pitcher do?
- 1:26:51I think a lot of times Billy you didn't really want to throw it.
- 1:26:55You get it that bad you almost think I'm afraid to throw it here and you never even get it close to the plate.
- 1:27:01It's the safest way to throw it probably.
- 1:27:07The ball hits pretty hard out in the right center.
- 1:27:09Northup goes over. He calls for the ball and takes it.
- 1:27:12Way out there. That's all for Penegriero and that's all for the Red Sox here in the top half of the sixth inning.
- 1:27:18No runs, no hits, no errors and no one left on base.
- 1:27:21And the score after five and a half innings of play, Detroit one, Boston nothing.
- 1:27:28Some people when they like a car never want to part with it until something like fury comes along.
- 1:27:35And fury comes a long, long way to win you over.
- 1:27:45Instrument illumination.

- 1:27:50The most powerful standard V8 in the low price field.
- 1:28:01A long fine car look that isn't just a stretch of the imagination.

- 1:28:51What kind of a show is this Kurt? Pretty good?
- 1:28:53Good show.
- 1:28:55I'm sure it is.
- 1:28:57Lenny Green who used to be with the Red Sox.
- 1:29:01Doing a real fine job as you heard Mayo Smith say.
- 1:29:06The best thing he did was to bring up Lenny Green and get Jim Lannis and now K-line got hurt.
- 1:29:12Great job of this fellow.
- 1:29:16One ball and one strike on Lenny.
- 1:29:23Batting 381.
- 1:29:29Hits the ball to all fields.
- 1:29:32That pitch was too low.
- 1:29:41Two hits by the Tigers and two hits for the Red Sox.
- 1:29:45One run for the Detroit.
- 1:29:48Not any by the Red Sox. There's a ball hit out into the right field, the right fielder.
- 1:29:54The Panigliero cannot come up with it.
- 1:30:00Look out, he's going to be batting a thousand.
- 1:30:06Pretty hard to do I guess.
- 1:30:11Jerry Lumpy.
- 1:30:14You'll notice now the Tigers throw five left-handed batters at Stang.
- 1:30:22Lumpy chokes up on that bat.
- 1:30:25Batting second. They may move this runner.
- 1:30:30There he goes. Ball hit on the left field. This ball could be foul.
- 1:30:39Lenny Green and he was on his way.
- 1:30:44As Mayo Smith had the hit and run on.
- 1:30:49That's what you have to do sometime when you lose a fellow like Al K-line and Willie Hartman, Gates Brown.
- 1:30:54You've got to hit and run and steal a little bit.
- 1:30:57You lose your power, B-Wheel, you've got to try something to score some runs.
- 1:31:04Squeeze a little bit.
- 1:31:07Runner at first base, that's Lenny Green, the hitter.
- 1:31:13Jerry Lumpy swings right to a fastball.
- 1:31:19Got a left-handed pitcher warming up.
- 1:31:23His name is Lyle.
- 1:31:29A good shot right there. You get a chance to see the base runner and the hitter.
- 1:31:38Very seldom see him send a runner with two strikes on a hitter.
- 1:31:43No one out. Sometimes he'll do it with two men out.
- 1:31:47They throw him out, you just have your hitter come leading things off the next inning.
- 1:31:53Fastball outside. One ball and two strikes on Jerry Lumpy.
- 1:31:56As he checks with the coach, Cuchinela at third base.
- 1:32:06Fowler first came up with the Yankees with Kansas City.
- 1:32:12Bouncer, and there goes Lenny Green.
- 1:32:16Foul ball.
- 1:32:19Come on back, Lenny.
- 1:32:24One ball, two strikes on Jerry Lumpy.
- 1:32:26The Tigers lead this ballgame by a score of 1-0.
- 1:32:30Denny McLean against Lee Stang.
- 1:32:40There's the young left-hander, Lyle, and he throws pretty hard.
- 1:32:53Fastball outside. Two and two.
- 1:33:03Lyle, they call him Sparky.
- 1:33:10Two and two is a count on Jerry Lumpy.
- 1:33:14Watch the base runner.
- 1:33:17He didn't go. It's too low. Green and two.
- 1:33:23Well, as we've often said, a fellow batting in that second position, he's supposed to be able to handle that bat and get a piece of the ball.
- 1:33:32So, if we count three and two, no one away.
- 1:33:35I'm sure that they'll send Lenny Green.
- 1:33:48That was not his good move. He may come back with a better one on this one.
- 1:33:55Gets no one away when the bottom half is six inning.
- 1:33:59There goes the runner.
- 1:34:01Lazy looper, boy, in foul territory takes it.
- 1:34:06Back to first base, Lenny Green.
- 1:34:10Have a real nice crowd here today and a lot of youngsters.
- 1:34:17The hitter is Dick McCollum.
- 1:34:20Always like to walk in a ballpark and
- 1:34:26see those young bands.
- 1:34:40Dick McCollum.
- 1:34:45Takes the first pitch. It's outside ball one. Let's see what he's done today. He's 0 for 2.
- 1:34:52Batting 250.
- 1:34:56He has 15 home runs.
- 1:35:04Going outside ball two.
- 1:35:07On at first base.
- 1:35:11Lenny Green.
- 1:35:14Let's pick George Scott, hold him on.
- 1:35:35You can see Dick McCollum did not like that call.
- 1:35:42He did a few words.
- 1:35:46Mr. Valentine behind home plate.
- 1:35:51You can't win, Dick.
- 1:35:56All he can do is get an early shower.
- 1:36:00Mayo is coming out now. Of course he's not protesting the strike because if you do, you're out of the ball game.
- 1:36:09He's out there to protect McAllby. He didn't want to see him going out of the ball game.
- 1:36:18There's the super scout.
- 1:36:21Mr. Mayo Smith.
- 1:36:23That's what he was called his title when he worked for the last five or six years with the Yankees. A real fine person.
- 1:36:29Down in Florida.
- 1:36:35He goes from inside to outside.
- 1:36:39I imagine McAll of right now is thinking that plate must be about 30 inches wide.
- 1:36:49Just got the black.
- 1:36:53Sometimes when you look at the curveball on the outside, you go out for it and you throw that fastball inside.
- 1:37:00Hard to stay on it.
- 1:37:06Good pitch right there.
- 1:37:08McStang wanted that one, Peewee. I think if they called McCollough out, we might have lost McCollough for the day.
- 1:37:19Three and two. One away. Lenny Green on it first base.
- 1:37:24I imagine he'll be running.
- 1:37:27Flip over there to Stang.
- 1:37:32The score one to nothing. Detroit over Boston. We're in the bottom half, the sixth inning in Detroit.
- 1:37:40There goes the runner.
- 1:37:43Pitch was a little outside. Lenny Green moved down to second.
- 1:37:48That's the first walk.
- 1:37:50Giving up a lead, Stang, and as Kurt told you, this fellow doesn't walk too many man. Average is about two men.
- 1:37:57That's very good.
- 1:38:01Here comes my old friend coming out of the dugout.
- 1:38:06Sal Magley, pitching coach for the Red Sox.
- 1:38:11The barber.
- 1:38:14He wasn't your friend when he was with the Giants.
- 1:38:17Oh, I'm telling you, I used to hate this man.
- 1:38:22I'm talking to Sal about it this morning, Peewee, about coming from the Giants where he and the Dodgers sort of had a running gun battle for years and all of a sudden coming over to pitch for the Dodgers.
- 1:38:34And I guess he and Carl Perillo became the best friends after years of hating each other.
- 1:38:41Wow, wow, there's a break in the action here at the Tigers today. And the score, Detroit 1, Boston nothing.
- 1:38:48For Keeley.
- 1:38:52That's the boy. 14. He's going to have all the advantages I never had.
- 1:38:58See that? Peach fuzz already.
- 1:39:01See this? The Gillette Hoosers.
- 1:39:04A light pressureless shave.
- 1:39:06Best chance of a nick. No blades to mess around with. All the advantages.
- 1:39:12Then I got to thinking, why shouldn't I have all the advantages I never had?
- 1:39:17So?
- 1:39:23Are they dangerous warden?
- 1:39:25Hardened criminals, everyone.
- 1:39:27That one there doesn't look the type.
- 1:39:29Worse than the lots.
- 1:39:30What did he do?
- 1:39:31Stashed away the family's right guard.
- 1:39:33Tried to keep it all to himself. Left his whole family defenseless.
- 1:39:39Beast!
- 1:39:41Gillette right guard. The perfect personal family deodorant.
- 1:39:45Because nothing touches you but the spray itself.
- 1:39:48Don't leave your family defenseless. Keep an extra right guard on hand.
- 1:39:56The new pitcher.
- 1:39:58Saw him warming up down there a while ago. Al Sparky Lowe.
- 1:40:02He was 2-2 at Toronto.
- 1:40:05He's a relief specialist from Reynoldsville, Pennsylvania.
- 1:40:12Been two games here such as been in Detroit.
- 1:40:17I haven't scored off him.
- 1:40:19Sandy, how does he throw?
- 1:40:21Left-handed, Pee-wee.
- 1:40:23Thank you very much. What are you trying to tell me? You haven't seen him pitch?
- 1:40:27No, I haven't, Pee-wee. But if he's a relief specialist, I'd have to bet that he throws a sinking fastball.
- 1:40:33Probably has a pretty good breaking ball slider.
- 1:40:36Most of your relief pitchers are guys that can make the opposing players hit the ball on the ground.
- 1:40:44Yes, sir. The great relief pitchers always keep that ball down, it seems like.
- 1:40:49They usually have a sinker. Kurt, you have some other scorers.
- 1:40:51Minnesota, Chicago, no score at the end of 6. Merritt against John.
- 1:40:55Cleveland, 3. Washington, 2. Into 3. T on for the Indians. Pretty relieved Coleman in the second.
- 1:41:00Tony Horton, homeward in the third, nobody on for the Indians.
- 1:41:03New York to Baltimore, twine-nighter tonight.
- 1:41:06Doubleheader Kansas City to California.
- 1:41:09The Pirates lead Cincinnati 5-0 into 4-1-1-2.
- 1:41:12The only other game going right now in the national.
- 1:41:16The first pitch to Norm Cash, the breaking bit.
- 1:41:21A wild swing at it. Last night.
- 1:41:30What is that pitcher's name? Wasilewski?
- 1:41:33Pitching for the Red Sox.
- 1:41:35They had Norm Cash up there.
- 1:41:39Nick Williams had a left hander warming up down there.
- 1:41:42I know he thought about bringing him in.
- 1:41:45Had a little trouble and Cash hit one nine miles out in the right field.
- 1:41:50For the day, Mr. Williams bringing that left hander in to pitch to Cash and he struck him out.
- 1:41:56Runners on first and second down at second base, Lenny Green.
- 1:42:00Over at first base, Dick McCallum.
- 1:42:09Another left hander, Jim Nothra.
- 1:42:13Batting 274.
- 1:42:16We have a right hander warming up. It's Brandon.
- 1:42:22May see him come in the next inning to pitch the bottom half that line up who's all right handed.
- 1:42:28Say one thing, this wow looks pretty good.
- 1:42:32There's Brandon.
- 1:42:48One ball and one strike. Lenny Green at second base.
- 1:42:51At first base, Dick McCallum.
- 1:42:54One to nothing.
- 1:42:57Troy over Boston.
- 1:43:12Lee Stang goes five and one third inning.
- 1:43:20Giving up one run so far because the two base runners belong to him.
- 1:43:26Pitched a fine ball game, Stang did.
- 1:43:34Kurt, tell us something about that All-Star game.
- 1:43:36Starts out in Anaheim.
- 1:43:38Well, we're going to be underway with it at four o'clock Eastern Daylight Time.
- 1:43:43This will be the first time the All-Star game that have been televised into nighttime television.
- 1:43:49In the East especially.
- 1:43:52A little pop-up. Boy at third base should have it.
- 1:43:56He's over near the stands and takes it for out number three.
- 1:43:59So Lyle does a fine job for the Red Sox here.
- 1:44:02The bottom half is sixth inning.
- 1:44:04They came up with no runs, one hit, no errors, and two men left on base.
- 1:44:08So the score is the sixth full inning.
- 1:44:10Detroit won Boston nothing.
- 1:44:14Is there a special day to try Salem filter cigarettes?
- 1:44:26Sure there is.
- 1:44:28It's the day you're in the mood for a change, a real change, a different tasting cigarette.
- 1:44:36That's your Salem day.
- 1:44:43Today get the taste that's springtime fresh every time around.
- 1:44:48Discover how Salem refreshes your taste.
- 1:45:00Rich tobacco taste, menthol soft flavor, that's Salem.
- 1:45:06And today's your day to try them.
- 1:45:09Have a Salem.
- 1:45:11Salem refreshes your taste.
- 1:45:17Fans, next Saturday we'll be traveling to the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles
- 1:45:20for the game between the surprising Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 1:45:24We'll see Ron Santo and all the rest of the exciting Cubs team
- 1:45:28and watch Leo Drosser face his old team.
- 1:45:31That's next Saturday, 4 o'clock Eastern time, 3 o'clock Central time, in color, exclusively on NBC.
- 1:45:38Kurt, come on in here.
- 1:45:41And your Scott hits a ground ball to Euler in a hole, a long throw and he's got him.
- 1:45:46That's the play of the ball game so far.
- 1:45:50That's the play that shortstop has to make.
- 1:45:52Deep in the hole, the long throw from the grass, and still get your man and Euler get it.
- 1:45:58That's what the Scouts look for for a young shortstop, don't they Peewee?
- 1:46:02Yes sir, Kurt, and they can't say enough of this Euler.
- 1:46:06We saw him, you and I did last night, make three fine plays out here
- 1:46:10and you can just see what he did right there.
- 1:46:12A great play, one of the toughest plays far shortstop in the hole and gets up on that ball.
- 1:46:17Pat Bricelli's up now, he's lying is short and he's walked and he takes ball one.
- 1:46:22Pat Bricelli batting 298.
- 1:46:25The Tigers have one run, three hits, no errors.
- 1:46:28The Red Sox have no runs, two hits, one error.
- 1:46:32A lone run of this game is an unearned run.
- 1:46:34He pops it up, a major leak pop up to the left side.
- 1:46:39Waiting for this one to come down is Euler, and that fooled him just a bit.
- 1:46:44Slight breeze blowing, looking up at that high sky, two downs.
- 1:46:49That one nearly brought rain clouds.
- 1:46:54Reggie Smith is grounded out and flied out.
- 1:47:08We have 30,000 here this Saturday afternoon,
- 1:47:11combined paid and youngsters at Tiger Stadium.
- 1:47:15One strike to Reggie Smith.
- 1:47:24Four, seven, nine in a row now have gone down before Dennis McLean.
- 1:47:29The last man to reach base was Pat Bricelli who walked in the fourth.
- 1:47:33Now one strike pitch.
- 1:47:35There's a line shot to the left center that's in the gap.
- 1:47:38Should be for extra bases. Smith can fly, he may go for three here.
- 1:47:43He's holding his second, nearly made an overturn.
- 1:47:52Going out to meet the relay in was the shortstop Roy Euler.
- 1:47:57It was a double for Smith with two down.
- 1:48:02And they're calling Mike Ryan back, and they're going to hit for him.
- 1:48:07I believe it will be Jose Tardable, a left-handed batter.
- 1:48:13Red Sox now have a tying run of second two down.
- 1:48:20Tardable went to the bat rack.
- 1:48:28He's batting 252, and he's coming out to hit for the catcher Ryan.
- 1:48:40The Red Sox have had three hits, single by Andrews, double by Yastremski,
- 1:48:45a double by Reggie Smith.
- 1:48:48The Tigers have had three singles.
- 1:48:50Lenny Green has two of them, and McLean the pitcher.
- 1:48:54So from two to eight in that batting order, the Tigers haven't had a hit.
- 1:49:01Occurred a lot of times where you put a pinch hitter in like they would
- 1:49:05a tying run on a second base.
- 1:49:08It's late in the ball game, it's the seventh inning.
- 1:49:12Say we may put him on, but you know that Dick Williams,
- 1:49:16if you put Tardable on at first base, you know you're going to bring up a pinch hitter for
- 1:49:20Al Sparky Low.
- 1:49:22So I'm sure that they'll pitch to Tardable.
- 1:49:28The best left-handed pinch hitter, Peewee, the Red Sox have is in the service right now.
- 1:49:34Dalton Jones putting in a two-week hit.
- 1:49:39Have Jerry Adair available, but they're short on left-handers.
- 1:49:44You know, you almost need a scorecard anymore to keep track of these ball clubs
- 1:49:47with this two-week service.
- 1:49:49If every club has two or three fellows going in and coming out,
- 1:49:54Houston at one time had five of them coming in and going out.
- 1:50:00Runner on second, two down.
- 1:50:03Jose Tardable batting, makes the strike here.
- 1:50:07A tight ball game, one to nothing.
- 1:50:10Tigers grab the lead in the third.
- 1:50:24Last night they were leading four to one going to the ninth,
- 1:50:27and the Red Sox tied the game in the ninth and sent it into extra inning.
- 1:50:38Here's the one-strike delivery.
- 1:50:40It's strike two to the Jose Tardable.
- 1:50:44The Tigers and the Red Sox have played eight games this year, and they split four and four.
- 1:50:55And since these two teams started playing each other in 1901,
- 1:51:02they're all even, and each won 709 games against the other one.
- 1:51:08This one will break the tie.
- 1:51:10The two-strike pitch, changeup, bowels it off.
- 1:51:17Tardable can really fly.
- 1:51:20There's Smith, the second two down.
- 1:51:22He hits a slow bounder to the infield.
- 1:51:24He's very difficult to throw out.
- 1:51:27One of the fastest men in the majors.
- 1:51:33Oh, and two.
- 1:51:35The Jose Tardable.
- 1:51:42Reggie Smith, the second two down.
- 1:51:47One ball, two strikes now.
- 1:51:50Sparky Lyle, the pitcher's on deck,
- 1:51:52and they have Darrell Brandon warming up in the Red Sox bullpen.
- 1:52:08One ball, two strikes.
- 1:52:11Changeup, hit on the ground.
- 1:52:14McCollough, the cash, and they're out of the game.
- 1:52:17No runs for the Red Sox in the second.
- 1:52:19One hit, there was no air, there was one man left.
- 1:52:22The middle of the seventh inning to score is the Tigers 1 and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:52:38They would stretch from Greenwich Village
- 1:52:42up Fifth Avenue
- 1:52:45through the Lincoln Tunnel
- 1:52:48along the Connecticut Turnpike
- 1:52:52across the streams of Vermont
- 1:52:55through the woods of New Hampshire
- 1:53:00and up the rocky coast of Maine.
- 1:53:04In fact, if all the beer drinkers who bought Peel's Real Draft last year were lined up,
- 1:53:09they would stretch from New York to Labrador.
- 1:53:12We call this the greatest single success in beer history.
- 1:53:16We could shout about Peel's Real Draft, we could brag about its flavor,
- 1:53:20but we feel 1,314,630 new customers is the best advertisement of all time.
- 1:53:28Come on, buddy, join the line!
- 1:53:35There's the...
- 1:53:39interclub history, it shows you how close these two clubs are.
- 1:53:43That was going into this season,
- 1:53:45and they've each won four against each other this year.
- 1:53:49That's about as dead even as two teams can get from 19-1 into the 1967 season.
- 1:53:57Well, here we go now, fans, to the last of the seventh,
- 1:54:01the home half of the seventh in Tiger Stadium.
- 1:54:04Bill Freehand, Mickey Stanley, Ray Euler coming up.
- 1:54:08We have a new catcher in for the Red Sox, Russ Gibson.
- 1:54:16Sparky Lyle is pitching.
- 1:54:19Bill Freehand has grounded out twice, 0-2, adding 277.
- 1:54:30Paul Freehand won the ballgame last night, a line drive hit off the left field wall
- 1:54:35that dropped dead at the base of the wall, scored the winning run from first base.
- 1:54:44One ball, no strike.
- 1:54:51Doing nothing.
- 1:54:55Hope these clubs will be well represented in the all-star game.
- 1:55:01The Red Sox will have four players.
- 1:55:05The White Sox will have four players.
- 1:55:07The Minnesota Twins, four players.
- 1:55:09Brown ball in the hole, scooped up by Joe Boyd.
- 1:55:13Nice play, and there's one down.
- 1:55:18Mickey Stanley coming up.
- 1:55:20Bowled out and fly it up.
- 1:55:22The Tigers will have three.
- 1:55:24They have three voted.
- 1:55:26K-line has been replaced.
- 1:55:28The
- 1:55:31American League is Frank Robinson is now out of the game.
- 1:55:36He's still suffering double vision after having a slight concussion, and Robinson will not play.
- 1:55:42Baltimore stars, strike one.
- 1:55:45So the starting outfield will now be Dostremsky, Oliva, and Canigliaro.
- 1:55:51And I would imagine a man who managed the ball club for Hank Bauer, but he may have to put Dostremsky
- 1:55:57in center field because I don't believe Canigliaro will leave a plate center.
- 1:56:02Bow ball, 0-2.
- 1:56:05So they'll be in the starting lineup without a really natural, regular center fielder.
- 1:56:14The American League had four of their pitchers pitch last night in the all-star squad.
- 1:56:21Downing, Peters, Chance, and McLaughlin.
- 1:56:23They'll be well rested for those boys.
- 1:56:26The National League had none of their all-star starters
- 1:56:32work last night.
- 1:56:34Boy handling the chopper, two down.
- 1:56:39Ray Euler coming up.
- 1:56:41Marichal is pitching today against Rysdale.
- 1:56:52That'll be quite a spectacle.
- 1:56:54We're really looking forward to it.
- 1:56:57Dewey, Sandy, and I will be out there covering the game for NBC Tuesday, 7 o'clock Eastern Daylight Time.
- 1:57:04We'll be joined by Buddy Black, the Angels broadcaster.
- 1:57:11Strike one, understand that Gene Autry, the owner of the club,
- 1:57:19President Bob Reynolds, General Manager Fred Haney.
- 1:57:24They've gone through a lot of preparation.
- 1:57:28They're going to play an outstanding host role for all the press and radio and the fans.
- 1:57:35It's a beautiful ballpark, by the way.
- 1:57:37If you've never seen it in person or on TV, I know you'll be delighted to see it when we telecast Tuesday.
- 1:57:45A 1-1 pitch. All off, 1 and 2. Our score here, the Tigers are leading the Red Sox, 1 to nothing, last to the 7.
- 1:58:03The way the Angels have been winning, the fans should be in a happy frame of mind out there, too.
- 1:58:09They'll go out there Tuesday.
- 1:58:16One ball, two strikes.
- 1:58:20They went after that bad fastball way outside.
- 1:58:23Sparky Lyle blew them down on the 7.
- 1:58:26Free up, free down. The end of the seventh inning here in Detroit to score.
- 1:58:30The Tigers 1 and the Red Sox nothing.
- 1:58:40On the prowl, the wild new 67 Plymouth Barracudas are here.

- 1:59:48Help keep the last of the great beers great. Never use for medicinal purposes.
- 1:59:55Do not serve at room temperature.
- 1:59:59With one exception.
- 2:00:01And above all, don't try to improve it.
- 2:00:12The thoroughbred racing and beautiful surroundings. That's the Green Mountain story Monday through Saturday at 745 Green Mountain, Tonal, Vermont.
- 2:00:22This is WRGB Channel 6 Connected-E, first in the Capital District.
- 2:00:28Did you ever invite the guests to a wedding and then have to cancel the wedding?
- 2:00:33This is what this boy did that is coming up to pinch it for the Red Sox. His name is Ken Poulsen.
- 2:00:39And just a couple of weeks ago he was playing for Winston-Salem in the Carolina League.
- 2:00:44And he and his fiancee had the wedding date set. They invited about three dozen guests.
- 2:00:49And the day before the wedding the Red Sox said, you're in the big leagues son.
- 2:00:53So they canceled the wedding for a while and he came up to join the Red Sox. All won.
- 2:00:58And his bride said, we can get married any day but my guy can't go to the big leagues any day.
- 2:01:06So they put it off for a little while. And here he is, Ken Poulsen, who's hitting for the pitcher right now, Sparky Lyle.
- 2:01:16Ball two.
- 2:01:17Sounds to me like she's going to make him a good wife.
- 2:01:20Yes sir, a good baseball wife and they have to be very understanding.
- 2:01:24You better believe it.
- 2:01:28Two balls and no strikes.
- 2:01:33A strike. He's only 20 years old.
- 2:01:39Well, you know, you talk to minor league managers who manage these youngsters and class D ball down below 18, 19, and 20.
- 2:01:53Two balls, one strike. Nobody on, nobody out. Eighth inning.
- 2:01:58Two and two. And they say, one of the toughest jobs there is when you have to call a young fellow in with a new wife,
- 2:02:07or they have a little baby and tell them that they've been sent, they're being sent down and sent out.
- 2:02:15It's a tough job, a young married couple of the minors.
- 2:02:20And a wife has to be very understanding. Two-two. Bow back.
- 2:02:34These baseball wives deserve a lot of credit. They have to maintain two homes when they play.
- 2:02:40Usually they're a regular home.
- 2:02:43Then they come to the Major League City where their husband's playing, bring the family.
- 2:02:47All is foul.
- 2:02:56Your wife used to work to keep your home in Louisville, and you come up to Brooklyn.
- 2:03:00That's right, Kurt. I was just sitting here listening to you, and you were bringing out some good points,
- 2:03:04but I was thinking that I guess you have to be an understanding wife whatever business you're in.
- 2:03:10It is a little tough, though. You're making your children in school.
- 2:03:15You're putting them in school and taking them out and putting them in here and bringing them out.
- 2:03:21They do two-fit. There's a fly ball in the center field.
- 2:03:25Broken bat coming on is Ron Northrup, and it's one down.
- 2:03:34Top of the order now, Mike Andrews for the Red Sox. Single fly it out and ground it out.
- 2:03:41The Tigers are ahead one to nothing in the eighth inning.
- 2:03:44The Tigers have one run, three hits, and no errors.
- 2:03:47The Red Sox have no runs, three hits, and one error.
- 2:03:55Benny McLean has gone all the way. There's Bucky Brandon, and that number 27 is his age.
- 2:04:00He's 27 years old today.
- 2:04:06He'll be coming on the pitch in the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:04:13Mike Andrews pops it up to the left side, calling forward to Euler the shortstop.
- 2:04:21Two down.
- 2:04:28Boy has walked fly to center field twice. He's 0 for 2.
- 2:04:43Playing with a record of nine wins, nine losses.
- 2:04:46His last time out was a complete game, beating the Indians 2-1.
- 2:04:54He's just three hits in that game.
- 2:05:01Slow ball to boys, ball one.
- 2:05:07Now the plane's getting into the big boys in that Red Sox lineup.
- 2:05:14Boy, you're a sprint, keep the nickel, you're a arrow, start and bet the celly.
- 2:05:19Another slow one, ball two, 2-0.
- 2:05:33Two away, base is empty.
- 2:05:39Fly ball to right field, fairly deep, and Northrop has room as he backpedals to the edge of the warning crack.
- 2:05:46He's in the eighth inning.
- 2:05:49The up three down for the Red Sox. In the middle of the eighth, the score that is for Tigers 1, the Boston Red Sox nothing.
- 2:06:15Gillette packs an avalanche of smooth shaving comfort in you Gillette foamy.
- 2:06:21Nobody makes a lather like foamy, so moist, so rich, so creamy.
- 2:06:27Nobody makes a lather like Gillette.
- 2:06:32What happens when a little water meets a little heads up hair grow?
- 2:06:42Love.
- 2:06:45Heads up mixes with water.
- 2:06:48You get water's clean look with the staying power of hairdressing.
- 2:06:53And you just add water to comb it again.
- 2:06:58Isn't love wonderful?
- 2:07:03Bucky Brandon is making his 18th appearance of the year for the Red Sox.
- 2:07:08In the second two lost seven and earned an average of 4.16.
- 2:07:14In the last of the eighth inning you'll face the Tiger pitcher Dennis McLean and then Lenny Green and Jerry Lumpy at the top of the order.
- 2:07:21And the hand you hear in the background is for McLean who has fired a three hit shutout so far today.
- 2:07:28In other games, Minnesota and the White Sox.
- 2:07:34Seven, no score. That's the big one.
- 2:07:49The top four clubs in the league are meeting here in the weekend.
- 2:07:52The Twins and White Sox in Chicago, the Tigers and the Red Sox here.
- 2:08:00They're single and grounded out.
- 2:08:04Ball went to him.
- 2:08:17Fast ball strike, one and one.
- 2:08:31Ground ball to Petsasoli.
- 2:08:35One down.
- 2:08:40Green is lined out and single twice, two out of three.
- 2:08:49A 4-0-9 batter.
- 2:08:52The Tigers put him in their uniform here and brought him up from Toledo.
- 2:09:00He and his mother own a four shot here at the court.
- 2:09:15He's been delivering the roses for the Tigers.
- 2:09:24Ball one to Lenny Green.
- 2:09:30Tigers ahead one to nothing.
- 2:09:33Brandon's low with a two to nothing.
- 2:09:40We've got a real seat squirmer going on here in Tiger Stadium.
- 2:09:52Two and one.
- 2:10:09Bounding ball.
- 2:10:12It goes safe at first base.
- 2:10:15Andrews made a great play backing up that bad hop over the head of George Scott.
- 2:10:22Right side of that Tiger infield.
- 2:10:25That's two bad hops in it.
- 2:10:28Now watch this ball really take a hop over Scott's head.
- 2:10:31And Andrews, keep your eye on him on the back up there.
- 2:10:38You can see as Kurt said the ball made a sick a bad hop on George Scott.
- 2:10:42Andrews never did give up on the ball.
- 2:10:45He just kept going.
- 2:10:46Made a great play but the time he rolled over and flipped the ball to the pitcher.
- 2:10:50Not in time.
- 2:10:51Lenny Green can go down there pretty fast.
- 2:10:53There goes Green foul out.
- 2:10:56Tigers playing hit and run.
- 2:10:58Lenny Green now has three of the four hits for the Tigers.
- 2:11:04And they're bringing him back to first base.
- 2:11:06The Tigers have one away.
- 2:11:08They're leading the Red Sox one to nothing.
- 2:11:10The Red Sox in the ninth inning will nail the heart of their batting order up
- 2:11:13your Stremsky, Kanigale, Arrow and Scott.
- 2:11:23That one hit deep in the center.
- 2:11:25Reggie Smith on his horse.
- 2:11:27Still going.
- 2:11:28He's got it.
- 2:11:29400 feet from home plate.
- 2:11:31The throw in to Mike Andrews.
- 2:11:34Smith just outran that one.
- 2:11:36Two down.
- 2:11:37Right at the warning path.
- 2:11:39This is what we mean about this ballpark.
- 2:11:41If you'll keep them from pulling here and you've got a center fielder that can run,
- 2:11:48those big long 400 foot flies are outs here.
- 2:11:52Two down.
- 2:11:53Dick McCullough.
- 2:11:55Fly to the right, foul out on what?
- 2:12:16Low ball, first strike.
- 2:12:18I'll tell you one thing about Reggie Smith.
- 2:12:20He turned to his left and he kept that ball right on his left all the way.
- 2:12:25A lot of times you see an outfielder turn to the left, that ball's on the right-hand side.
- 2:12:28It's tough to catch.
- 2:12:30He turned right away and just kept going and went right to the ball.
- 2:12:34He handled that one beautifully.
- 2:12:36And he whirled and got that ball back into that infield too.
- 2:12:40Bring him back.
- 2:12:46Two down.
- 2:12:56One ball, one strike.
- 2:13:18Good one.
- 2:13:48How's it off of the plate?
- 2:13:51Two and two to McCullough.
- 2:13:53The two out, many greens at first.
- 2:13:58The Tigers won, the Red Sox nothing in the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:14:15Brandon pitching two and two when he delivers to the plate.
- 2:14:31Now three and two and green will be going on this pitch.
- 2:14:53Two down, green will be running.
- 2:15:20There he goes, ball four, runners on first and second.
- 2:15:27The matter Norman Cash, flying out, grounded out, and struck out.
- 2:15:39Tigers have a great pair of fans all the way in the Bahama Islands.
- 2:15:45Mr. and Mrs. Bill Shackle, the Brown Colony club there in Chub Key in the Bahamas,
- 2:15:50they've erected a special aerial on their home way over there
- 2:15:56deep in the Bahama Islands when they get their NBC games from the Miami State.
- 2:16:01And they're great Detroit fans, so imagine they're watching for the Tigers now.
- 2:16:07Ball one, Norman Cash, green at second, McCullough at first, two down.
- 2:16:19Tigers won, Red Sox nothing.
- 2:16:26And now there's ball two and Osinski is starting to warm up for the Red Sox.
- 2:16:34Joe Foy is asked for time.
- 2:16:39Heated up, third baseman Foy is coming in for two reasons.
- 2:16:43One, to try and settle this pitcher Brandon down and to give
- 2:16:47Osinski some extra time out on the bullpen.
- 2:16:54Just a minute, somebody's going to tell Foy to get back to his third base job
- 2:16:58and that's the ball game moving. And here's Valentine about to move out.
- 2:17:11Two and nothing to Norman Cash, runners on first and second, two down.
- 2:17:18They're not holding at first.
- 2:17:24They're just going to get that fastball in there.
- 2:17:31I believe he said it was a boy, I should have ripped at it.
- 2:17:37Two balls and one strike.
- 2:17:47The game is rounding third, the throw by Kanigli Arrows cut off by Scott.
- 2:17:54Over to third, McCullough and Cash delivers a big hit for the Tigers.
- 2:18:00Instead of a one run ball game now it's a two run game.
- 2:18:03A little bit different for a pitcher to work on in the ninth inning.
- 2:18:06Makes it a lot easier for him now, Kurt.
- 2:18:08He doesn't have that dying run at the plate every time the hitter comes up there.
- 2:18:12Especially having to realize today, as hot as it is, he looks like he's a little tired at the plate.
- 2:18:19He's walking awful slow back and forth from the mound.
- 2:18:25Runners on first and third, two outs.
- 2:18:28The Tigers leading now two to nothing, the last of the eighth and Jim Northrop out.
- 2:18:33Now struck out, grounded out, and fouled out.
- 2:18:45All in.
- 2:19:05Flipping the pitch to Sully for the fourth play on Cash.
- 2:19:08The side's out but the Tigers picked up a big run.
- 2:19:11On two hits, no Red Sox there, the Tigers left two.
- 2:19:16At the end of eighth the score, the Detroit Tigers two, the Boston Red Sox nothing.
- 2:19:27Days like this, a man has time to notice things.
- 2:19:32Like the little sounds of deep woods and shallow water and the fresh taste of a salem.
- 2:19:41See how salem refreshes your taste. From the first puff to the last puff refreshes your taste.
- 2:20:06Discover rich tobacco taste. Menthol soft flavor in salem filter cigarettes.
- 2:20:15America's largest selling menthol because salem refreshes your taste.
- 2:20:28The ninth inning fans in Tiger Stadium, the Red Sox have their three, four, and five hitters up their lineup up.
- 2:20:35Justremski, Kanigla, and Scott facing Denny McLean who's allowed just three hits and no runs so far in this game.
- 2:20:43Alliance score for eight innings.
- 2:20:45The Tigers have two runs, five hits, and no errors.
- 2:20:48The Red Sox have no runs, three hits, and one error.
- 2:20:52Dick Trzyski is going to third base now for the Tigers replacing Jerry Lumpkin.
- 2:21:15Justremski is lined into a double play, double the right center, and grounded after first, adding three-thirty.
- 2:21:33Live ball looping into the right field corner of base for Justremski to start off the ninth. And now the tying run will be coming to the plate.
- 2:21:46Not around first, nobody out. Tony Kanigla up and action now is bringing up in the Tiger Bowl fan.
- 2:22:04Right, Marshall and Gladding. Gladdick's number 20, Marshall's 28. Tony Kanigla, light out three times, twice the center, once the right.
- 2:22:18Adding 299.
- 2:22:27High fly left center, Stanley has flipped the sunglasses down, looking up.
- 2:22:43Six putouts for Stanley in center field.
- 2:22:46The American League record is 11 putouts by a center fielder.
- 2:22:50The Major League record is 12 putouts for a center fielder.
- 2:22:54George Scott has bounced to the pitcher, struck out, and grounded out.
- 2:23:02On our NBC scoreboard, it's the Red Sox nothing and the Tigers two. Ninth inning, last call for the Red Sox.
- 2:23:14All on to Scott. That's the Salas on deck.
- 2:23:26Justremski up first, one out.
- 2:23:33Two and all. Blaine looks like he's a little tired, Sandy. He looks like he's struggling, Kurt, but the last three, four innings, his pitch probably is best baseball.
- 2:23:44He's stayed out of less trouble. He's gone with the fastball a little bit more. His curveball he's made a few mistakes with, but he hasn't thrown as many as we've seen him throw.
- 2:23:56The two-nothing pitch to Scott is three and all now, and the Tiger fans now are starting to rumble with uneasiness as the Red Sox have a runner-on first, one out, and a three-nothing count to George Scott.
- 2:24:13Thirty thousand fans here today, Tiger Stadium.
- 2:24:23The three-oh pitch. Right in there to him, three and one.
- 2:24:46Three and one to George Scott. All four. That's the fourth walk by McLean, but his first walk since the fourth inning.
- 2:24:57The Red Sox now have runners on first and second, one out.
- 2:25:03Enrico Peppaseli up. Peppaseli has lined up the short walk to pop the short.
- 2:25:32He pops it up. The infield flyer will call the batter automatically out. Runners advance with their own rest. Two down.
- 2:25:40Follow and handle it. And rookie Reggie Smith now, the last hope for the Red Sox. He's grounded up first, flying to left and double, one out of three.
- 2:26:09The Smemski's up second. Scott's up first. Two down.
- 2:26:30All one to Smith.
- 2:26:41Two down, ninth inning. Tigers two, Red Sox nothing.
- 2:27:02There's Scott at first. The Smemski's second. And Jose Santiago now warming up in the Red Sox bullpen.
- 2:27:13Russ Gibson, the Red Sox, catches the on-deck batter.
- 2:27:21Two nothing pitch. He changed up and got it over for a strike. Two and one. There's Santiago.
- 2:27:44And Dale Smith watching intently his pitcher, McLean, hoping for that last out, the hardest out to get in the ballgame.
- 2:27:53Two and one is the count.
- 2:27:57A chopper hit the short. Euler makes the play the ballgame goal.
- 2:28:02As McLean is pitched his first shot out of the air.
- 2:28:06The tying runs were on here in the ninth inning, but McLean on a hot afternoon had enough to withstand the Red Sox threat.
- 2:28:14In the ninth, the Red Sox no runs, one hit, there were no errors, and two left.
- 2:28:19So the final score, the Detroit Tigers two runs, five hits, and no errors. The Boston Red Sox no runs.
- 2:28:32Many people actually believe that old beer is good beer.
- 2:28:38If this were true, people would have beer sellers.
- 2:28:44And we'd bottle our vintage beer in nifty looking decanters.
- 2:28:50And you could tuck away your oldest beer with the rest of your extra private stock.
- 2:28:57You could save it for extra special occasions.
- 2:29:02Serve it in nice little sophisticated glasses.
- 2:29:07Or maybe you'd even whip up a vintage beer sling.
- 2:29:13Well the truth is, the fresher the beer, the better the taste.
- 2:29:17That's why we brew Black Label locally, all around the country.
- 2:29:21In fact, you can't buy any good old college Black Label.
- 2:29:34Well that was a big run the Tigers picked up in the eighth inning.
- 2:29:39When they were leading one nothing, Lenny Green got on with a hit, finally scored our Norm Cash's single.
- 2:29:45That made it two nothing because the Red Sox, the Scripps, he led off the top of the ninth with a single.
- 2:29:50And the Red Sox might have played a little bit differently with a bunch trying to move a man on into scoring position.
- 2:29:55There's your line score again and the Tigers have won their sixth in a row.
- 2:30:00And the Red Sox have lost their fourth in a row.
- 2:30:03This broke a Red Sox streak though.
- 2:30:05Their last ten losses have all been by one run.
- 2:30:08That is the last ten games they've lost.
- 2:30:10But today they lost by two runs.
- 2:30:12Again the final score, the Tigers two and the Red Sox nothing.
- 2:30:16We'll continue to review the action of today's game.
