- 0:01A young child was asked what causes the wind.
- 0:06The child replied when the trees move their branches and leaves,
- 0:12that is what makes the wind. This extremely logical
- 0:16observation mirrors the way we tend to look at the world.
- 0:21We think that we make the decisions that we are in charge
- 0:25of what we do, and we fail to see that there are larger
- 0:29universal forces that move all action in US and others and in
- 0:34the world at large. When we pose for ourselves the
- 0:39analogous question Where do our feelings come from?
- 0:43Or where do our thoughts come from?
- 0:46We tend to give the same response as the child about the
- 0:50wind. If we reflect a little, however,
- 0:54we soon begin to recognize that there are indeed larger forces
- 0:58at work. We can see different societies
- 1:01that have developed different frames of reference and the
- 1:04individuals in those societies tend to respond according to the
- 1:09pattern of their own society or culture.
- 1:14The Bhagavad Gita states. Quote The Lord, O Arjuna, is
- 1:18seated in the heart of all beings turned, turning all
- 1:21beings mounted upon a machine by his Maya.
- 1:25Chapter 18. Sloka 61.
- 1:29We respond according to the action and interplay of the
- 1:32three gunas. We speak of the time spirit to
- 1:36describe a general approach to understanding life, action and
- 1:41our role in the world. This is an implicit recognition
- 1:45that there are universal forces that shape and guide our lives,
- 1:50our actions, and our reactions. And as these forces move, so we
- 1:56move under their impulsion. The question then arises as to
- 2:01how we can begin to know and understand these universal
- 2:04cosmic forces that act upon us and determine situations and our
- 2:09responses to them. As long as we remain fixated on
- 2:14the outer world and the physical senses, we remain essentially
- 2:18oblivious to their action. When we shift our standpoint
- 2:22inwards or upwards, bring calm and clarity to our awareness, we
- 2:28can begin to experience the impact of these forces in our
- 2:33lives, Sri Aurobindo observes. Quote.
- 2:39Universal forces means all forces, good or bad, favorable
- 2:43or hostile, of light and darkness that move in the
- 2:46cosmos. They, the cosmic forces, act on
- 2:50everyone according to the person's nature and his will and
- 2:54consciousness. These impersonal forces of the
- 2:59world we know only by their results, by the little that we
- 3:03can seize of their visible action and consequence.
- 3:07Among them it is mostly the physical world, forces of which
- 3:11we have some knowledge. But we live constantly in the
- 3:15midst of a whirl of unseen mind forces and life forces of which
- 3:20we know nothing. We are not even aware of their
- 3:23existence. To all this unseen movement and
- 3:27action, the subliminal inner consciousness can open our
- 3:30awareness, For it has a direct knowledge of it, by direct
- 3:35contact, by inner vision, by a psychic sensitiveness.
- 3:40But at present it can only enlighten our obtuse
- 3:43superficiality and outwardness by unexplained warnings,
- 3:48premonitions, attractions and repulsions, ideas, suggestions,
- 3:53obscure intuitions, the little it can get through imperfectly
- 3:58to the surface. The inner being not only
- 4:01contacts directly and concretely the immediate motive and
- 4:05movement of these universal forces and feels the results of
- 4:09their present action, but it can to a certain extent forecast or
- 4:14see ahead their further action. There is a greater power in our
- 4:19subliminal parts to overcome the time barrier, to have the sense
- 4:24or feel the vibration of coming events, of distant happenings,
- 4:29even to look into the future. It is true that this knowledge
- 4:33proper to the subliminal being is not complete, for it is a
- 4:38mixture of knowledge and ignorance, and it is capable of
- 4:42erroneous as well as of true perception.
