- 2:37Speaker 1: Honestly, we're not really gonna even need a video for
- 2:41Speaker 1: this one because this episode's kind of I'm gonna be honest,
- 2:43Speaker 1: this is probably just just gonna be a filler episode
- 2:47Speaker 1: until we moved on to like more interesting books to read,
- 2:51Speaker 1: because uh, it took me a minute to get through
- 2:55Speaker 1: this book that we're reading today. So today we are
- 2:58Speaker 1: reviewing The Ruins. The Ruins by Scott Smith. For those
- 3:06Speaker 1: of you who have seen the movie, this is the
- 3:08Speaker 1: book that it was based off of. This is The
- 3:12Speaker 1: Ruins by Scott Smith. And in two thousand and eight,
- 3:19Speaker 1: I think two thousand and eight, two thousand and nine,
- 3:24Speaker 1: they this was this was a feature motion picture two
- 3:31Speaker 1: thousand and eight. Yeah, so this book was actually published
- 3:35Speaker 1: in two thousand and six, so about two years before
- 3:37Speaker 1: the movie came out. Well, this book, I will say,
- 3:41Speaker 1: was definitely written to be adapted into a movie because
- 3:44Speaker 1: the author, Scott Smith, he only wrote he only wrote
- 3:47Speaker 1: two books, this one and another book. I don't remember
- 3:49Speaker 1: that the other one is important, but it was he
- 3:55Speaker 1: himself is he is a movie writer, so he clearly
- 4:00Speaker 1: wrote this book with the intention of adapting it into
- 4:03Speaker 1: a movie, and they did. And at the time the
- 4:05Speaker 1: movie was good. It was like it was definitely one
- 4:07Speaker 1: of those like, uh, it was. It was definitely going
- 4:11Speaker 1: to be a classic horror film when it came out.
- 4:13Speaker 1: But then I watched it again and it did not
- 4:18Speaker 1: really survive passage of time at least not at least
- 4:22Speaker 1: I didn't think so, because like I forgot how short
- 4:25Speaker 1: the movie was, and and the CGI that they use
- 4:31Speaker 1: wasn't that great. Like they used it definitely in the moments,
- 4:36Speaker 1: like the parts where like it definitely needed it to
- 4:38Speaker 1: be good it was, but another parts you could tell
- 4:42Speaker 1: was very cheaply done, like especially when it came to
- 4:46Speaker 1: making certain things look give the illusion that certain things
- 4:51Speaker 1: are moving. So they give you, just like a basic rundown.
- 4:55Speaker 1: The Ruins is about a group of American tourists who
- 4:59Speaker 1: get trapped in a uh in, a Mayan ruin, so
- 5:05Speaker 1: like literal Mayan ruin. They they are trapped on this
- 5:13Speaker 1: uh this Mayan pyramid like which is called ziggurat of course,
- 5:19Speaker 1: and this cigaratte is covered completely covered in this strange vegetation,
- 5:24Speaker 1: these vines with these bright red flowers on them. And
- 5:28Speaker 1: when they get and when they get trapped on this pyramid,
- 5:31Speaker 1: they're there. The entire pyramid is surrounded by a tribe
- 5:34Speaker 1: of of Mayan people. These Mayans will not let them leave,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and if they try to leave, the mines will kill them,
- 5:43Speaker 1: and or at least try it well, the minds threaten them,
- 5:47Speaker 1: threatened to kill them, and they throughout the movie they
- 5:50Speaker 1: slowly discover that the that there have been other people
- 5:56Speaker 1: that have been trapped on the period by the pyramid
- 5:58Speaker 1: by the Mayans. And it turns out the mines aren't
- 6:01Speaker 1: really doing that to be malicious, but rather to prevent
- 6:04Speaker 1: them from prevent something from leaving with them, and that's
- 6:08Speaker 1: something is the vines themself. So the so the vines
- 6:14Speaker 1: that cover the pyramid are actually a very very hostile
- 6:17Speaker 1: and carnivorous plant. And if it can be called a
- 6:22Speaker 1: plant because the way it proliferates is very similar to
- 6:26Speaker 1: that of a fungus. But yeah, it takes the shape
- 6:29Speaker 1: of a but it takes the shape of a like
- 6:32Speaker 1: a plant like vine and it and while they're trapped
- 6:39Speaker 1: in the pyramid, they are slowly getting devoured by the
- 6:44Speaker 1: by the vine itself. Like the vine itself doesn't look
- 6:47Speaker 1: very threatening, but once it's like, but it actually moves,
- 6:50Speaker 1: and it moves very fast to like not just like
- 6:54Speaker 1: a slow creep to like, you know, wrap itself around you. No,
- 6:58Speaker 1: it'll straight up, just like slither up like a snake
- 7:00Speaker 1: and just like like wrap around you, and it'll eat you.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Not demure, not mindful of the earth.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Not de mirror, not mindful at all. So the book
- 7:15Speaker 1: itself is one is one of those books that the
- 7:18Speaker 1: movie doesn't really deviate much from. There's definitely like the
- 7:23Speaker 1: way that the events of the movie turn out, Uh,
- 7:28Speaker 1: it turns out the exact same way in the almost
- 7:30Speaker 1: the exact same way in the book. There are a
- 7:32Speaker 1: few key differences. So there are a total of five
- 7:38Speaker 1: people that get trapped on the pyramid, and in the
- 7:42Speaker 1: movie two of them get killed off pretty quickly, but
- 7:46Speaker 1: in the book they actually all don't get No one
- 7:49Speaker 1: gets killed off right away. Their deaths in the books
- 7:52Speaker 1: are a lot more slow and drawn out, and it's
- 7:55Speaker 1: definitely more of a psychological horror because they once they
- 7:59Speaker 1: realize what is killing is slowly starting to kill them.
- 8:03Speaker 1: They you know, there's fear, there's tension, there's paranoia, and eventually,
- 8:09Speaker 1: like they all don't start dying until like near the end,
- 8:13Speaker 1: when they can no longer really like hold the plant back,
- 8:17Speaker 1: when they can no longer actually when they're not strong
- 8:19Speaker 1: enough to like resist the plant or just do anything
- 8:23Speaker 1: to defend themselves. And pretty much by the end, their
- 8:26Speaker 1: their spirits are broken, and there's they're dying, they're if
- 8:31Speaker 1: they've stopped trusting each other, and it's honestly pretty sad.
- 8:35Speaker 1: It's the book has more of a sad ending and
- 8:39Speaker 1: it's very hopeless in the end, while in the movie
- 8:41Speaker 1: one of them does manage to escape. So let's go.
- 8:46Speaker 1: So let's go and go a little bit deeper into
- 8:48Speaker 1: the story. So the Ruins centers around for American tourists, uh,
- 8:56Speaker 1: you know, two pairs of couples two pairs of couples,
- 9:00Speaker 1: Jeff and his girlfriend Amy, Eric and his girlfriend Stacy.
- 9:07Speaker 1: So the four of them, they are all college students. Basically,
- 9:11Speaker 1: this is their last hurrah before they are all going
- 9:13Speaker 1: back to UH their studies UH. Jeff and Amy are
- 9:19Speaker 1: medical students UH. Eric and Stacy like Eric is actually
- 9:24Speaker 1: planning on UH is actually going back straight into the
- 9:27Speaker 1: workforce to become like to become some sort of like contractor.
- 9:31Speaker 1: And Stacy she's still she's still in school. And the
- 9:37Speaker 1: four of them were vacationing in con Kuhn, you know,
- 9:40Speaker 1: partying it enjoying life, partying it up. And they meet
- 9:45Speaker 1: several other international tourists. They meet a German tourist named Matthias,
- 9:51Speaker 1: and they also meet a group of tourists from Greece
- 9:56Speaker 1: and and they make friends with them. There's like three
- 9:58Speaker 1: Greek guys that they befriends. One of them they get
- 10:01Speaker 1: more close to as a guy who they don't know
- 10:03Speaker 1: his actual name because none of the Greeks speak English,
- 10:07Speaker 1: and so the Greek guy just refers to himself as Pablo.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Okay, love Pablo mm hm.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Now in the movie, Matthias can speak Greek and he's
- 10:19Speaker 1: the only person that's able to like communicate with with Pablo.
- 10:23Speaker 1: But in the books, they no one knows what the
- 10:25Speaker 1: hell he's saying, not even Matthias.
- 10:28Speaker 2: That's weird.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Yeah, But the thing is is that Matthias tells them
- 10:33Speaker 3: that he's going to uh in a day, tells them
- 10:36Speaker 3: that he's actually planning on going into the deeper into
- 10:40Speaker 3: the Mexican mainland, into the Yucatan forest to look for his.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Brother, because him and his brother had a falling out.
- 10:47Speaker 1: His brother wanted to follow some archaeologists he met and
- 10:53Speaker 1: tell in love basically fell head over heels with and
- 10:56Speaker 1: didn't want to leave without, you know, locking her down.
- 11:00Speaker 1: Of course, because of course and Matthia they had a
- 11:04Speaker 1: falling out and his brother left an anger. And now
- 11:07Speaker 1: Matthias has not heard from his brother in quite some time,
- 11:11Speaker 1: so he wants to go into the mainland, track his
- 11:14Speaker 1: brother down, and drag his ass back to Germany. And
- 11:18Speaker 1: the four American tourists are just like, well, hey, we'll
- 11:21Speaker 1: go with you, like, we'll help you. Look right, give
- 11:23Speaker 1: him a chance to like see more of the Mexican
- 11:26Speaker 1: you know, go deeper into Mexico, see what it's like.
- 11:29Speaker 1: And honestly, it's like.
- 11:31Speaker 2: It's a huh, that's going to end well for them.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not going to end well at all. So
- 11:40Speaker 1: and for some reason, somehow they managed to articulate to
- 11:43Speaker 1: Pablo that what they're planning on doing, and Pablo wants
- 11:47Speaker 1: to go with them too, because he thinks it's an
- 11:49Speaker 1: opportunity to party it up, and he leaves a note
- 11:53Speaker 1: with a map for his other two companions and the
- 11:57Speaker 1: and the five of them take a bus and head
- 12:00Speaker 1: deeper into the Yucatan Peninsula. They eventually reach a small
- 12:04Speaker 1: village where they hire where they hire a cab to
- 12:08Speaker 1: take them closer to where Matthias's brother was supposed to
- 12:11Speaker 1: be and where they end up is. The guy takes
- 12:15Speaker 1: them as far, only takes them about halfway and he
- 12:19Speaker 1: drops him off about eleven miles from where they're supposed
- 12:22Speaker 1: to be and the rest of the way they have
- 12:25Speaker 1: to walk. So after getting dropped off, the taxi driver
- 12:28Speaker 1: tries to convince them to him to let him take
- 12:32Speaker 1: them somewhere else where, like the where it's more appropriate
- 12:35Speaker 1: and more fun for tourists. You know something that the
- 12:37Speaker 1: place that's safer for tourists because there's a bit of
- 12:40Speaker 1: foreshadowing here that it kind of alludes that the taxi
- 12:44Speaker 1: driver knows what's out there, like the like where they're
- 12:47Speaker 1: trying to go, and it's trying to convince them like
- 12:49Speaker 1: that's not a good place for you, please, like you'd
- 12:52Speaker 1: be better off going somewhere safer, but they aren't convinced.
- 12:57Speaker 1: He's not able to convince them, and he ends up
- 12:59Speaker 1: driving off, leaving them there. So here's like so here
- 13:05Speaker 1: there are two two different things happen. So like in
- 13:08Speaker 1: the movie, they just head straight into the they just
- 13:12Speaker 1: follow the path and eventually reached the the Mayan pyramid
- 13:17Speaker 1: right and then that's when they encounter the aggressive mayance
- 13:21Speaker 1: and end up getting trapped on the pyramid. But in
- 13:24Speaker 1: this book, but in the book, the tourists actually follow
- 13:27Speaker 1: the path and they actually miss the path leading to
- 13:31Speaker 1: the to the ruins itself. Uh, they're looking and they
- 13:35Speaker 1: know they're supposed to be like a turnoff off the
- 13:37Speaker 1: path where there's where they follow to get to the archaeologue,
- 13:40Speaker 1: to get to the dig site that the archaeologists were
- 13:42Speaker 1: supposed to be at, and they passed it and actually
- 13:46Speaker 1: come across the Mayan village. So they come across the Mayans.
- 13:50Speaker 1: The Mayans, they the Miyans themselves. They don't really acknowledge
- 13:57Speaker 1: the tourists as they're passing by. In fact, they just
- 14:00Speaker 1: straight up ignore them. One one of the mind villagers
- 14:03Speaker 1: does approach them to like to try to acquire what
- 14:06Speaker 1: they're what they're there for. But the thing is is
- 14:09Speaker 1: that they're not speaking Spanish, They're they're speaking Nalla, so
- 14:15Speaker 1: they're not so no one understands what they're saying. And
- 14:18Speaker 1: the guy they managed to get the gist of the
- 14:22Speaker 1: guys trying to tell them to leave, like please leave. Yeah,
- 14:27Speaker 1: So they end up do leaving and going back up
- 14:30Speaker 1: the trail. And this time as they're going back up
- 14:32Speaker 1: the trail, they're they're keeping more of a closer eye
- 14:34Speaker 1: on where exactly the turnoff is. And as they're walking
- 14:38Speaker 1: up the trail, they noticed that a couple of boys
- 14:41Speaker 1: are following them from the village. Now, like the boys
- 14:44Speaker 1: themselves are not like the boys, they're not interacting with
- 14:47Speaker 1: the tourists, they're not trying to talk to them, they're
- 14:50Speaker 1: just following them. And a couple of times they stop
- 14:53Speaker 1: to try to like talk to the boys to see
- 14:54Speaker 1: what they want. But every time they stop the boys
- 14:57Speaker 1: stop and keep their distance, so eventually they just decide,
- 15:02Speaker 1: they just decide, all right, whatever, they ignore the boys
- 15:05Speaker 1: and can you continue down the path. Eventually they do
- 15:09Speaker 1: find the turnoff, and they find that the turnoff itself,
- 15:12Speaker 1: the side path itself, had been carefully hidden, so it
- 15:16Speaker 1: looked like someone had taken like leaves and plants and
- 15:19Speaker 1: deliberately planted them there to hide the path. But they
- 15:22Speaker 1: managed to find it because they could see how like
- 15:24Speaker 1: just the plants are just sticking or we're just stuck
- 15:27Speaker 1: in the ground to try to hide it. And as
- 15:30Speaker 1: soon as they find the path, they noticed that one
- 15:32Speaker 1: of the boys immediately turns around and runs back to
- 15:34Speaker 1: the village, while the other one stays and keeps watching them.
- 15:39Speaker 1: They think it's a little weird, but you know, American tourists,
- 15:43Speaker 1: you know, over their head, no sense of danger whatsoever.
- 15:47Speaker 2: I'd be like, they we shouldn't go.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not gonna go. I'm just feel like, you
- 15:54Speaker 1: know what, I think, I know what this is about,
- 15:56Speaker 1: and I'm just gonna go. I don't care about to
- 15:58Speaker 1: hide that other village. I'm going gone by.
- 16:04Speaker 2: It sucks us up.
- 16:05Speaker 1: But he did like, hey, listen, you know what. We
- 16:08Speaker 1: were just trying to be nice, trying to help you
- 16:10Speaker 1: find your brother, but you know, we hardly know you, Matthias,
- 16:14Speaker 1: and not to be rude, but you know this is
- 16:17Speaker 1: your thing, not mine. So I'm just gonna go.
- 16:19Speaker 2: Like, yeah, not gonna die.
- 16:22Speaker 1: Like this was fun, but we're done.
- 16:25Speaker 2: We're done.
- 16:27Speaker 1: We're done here. So the kids, so one of the
- 16:31Speaker 1: kids run back to the immediately turns around and runs
- 16:34Speaker 1: back to the village. The Taurusts all just just shrug
- 16:38Speaker 1: and continue down the path. Eventually they come across a
- 16:41Speaker 1: large clearing, and they noticed what's strange about the clearing
- 16:45Speaker 1: is that all vegetation has been completely cleared away. It's flat,
- 16:48Speaker 1: there's no grass, it's just dirt. And it's just dirt
- 16:53Speaker 1: with like a slight with a weird looking consistency to it,
- 16:57Speaker 1: almost like it's like mixed with some sort of powder,
- 17:00Speaker 1: which they later learn is salt. And in the center
- 17:06Speaker 1: of the clearing.
- 17:08Speaker 4: Uh.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Now, in the movie it's obvious, it's very obviously a pyramid,
- 17:12Speaker 1: Ziggaratte style pyramid, but in the book it's a hill.
- 17:16Speaker 1: It's described only as a hill.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Oh gotcha, I remember you telling me that.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Man, So there. They're observing the hill and they're trying
- 17:26Speaker 1: and but starts calling out to his brother, hoping to
- 17:29Speaker 1: find him. And as they're peering up the hill, they
- 17:31Speaker 1: do see what looks like a bright nylon orange nylon
- 17:36Speaker 1: tent and before they get any closer to the hill,
- 17:41Speaker 1: from behind them, they do hear the sound of the
- 17:44Speaker 1: of the rapid approaching person and out comes the very
- 17:48Speaker 1: the mayan that had approached them in the village. He's
- 17:51Speaker 1: on a He comes riding up on a horse, and
- 17:54Speaker 1: they noticed that the guy is strapped with the with
- 17:57Speaker 1: the revolver. The guy pulls up and start shouting at
- 18:01Speaker 1: them desperately, like like frantically shouting at them. They can't
- 18:04Speaker 1: understand what he's saying, but the way he's gesticulating and
- 18:09Speaker 1: waving his arms, they're slowly getting the feeling that he
- 18:12Speaker 1: wants them to leave. And while they're trying to like
- 18:15Speaker 1: calm the guy down, two more minds show up and
- 18:19Speaker 1: they noticed. They also noticed that even though they showed
- 18:21Speaker 1: up on horseback, the horses will not go any closer
- 18:24Speaker 1: to the to the hill. In fact, they won't even
- 18:26Speaker 1: enter the clearing that they're They won't even enter that
- 18:29Speaker 1: barren clearing like the mines come close, the horses pull
- 18:33Speaker 1: up start freaking out, forcing the minds to jump off
- 18:35Speaker 1: and confront the trusts on foot. The other two minds
- 18:39Speaker 1: that pull up are strapped with bows and arrows, So
- 18:43Speaker 1: these men are very threatening, and while they're not actively
- 18:46Speaker 1: aiming their weapons at them, it's clear the threat is
- 18:51Speaker 1: very clear. So while the American tourists are trying to
- 18:53Speaker 1: figure out like what's wrong, like what they're doing, what
- 18:56Speaker 1: should they do, one of the girls of the group, Amy,
- 19:01Speaker 1: of all people, she starts trying to take pictures of
- 19:06Speaker 1: the She's just taking pictures of everything right, total four
- 19:10Speaker 1: it's five, right, and she wants she was trying. She
- 19:15Speaker 1: tries to get like a wider shot of all of
- 19:18Speaker 1: everyone in her u in her picture, but feeling too close,
- 19:22Speaker 1: she keeps she keeps backing up, snapping pictures, wanting something
- 19:25Speaker 1: to like capture all three minds together with the group
- 19:29Speaker 1: while they're confronting them. She keeps backing up, and the
- 19:32Speaker 1: minds notice what she's doing and they start freaking out
- 19:35Speaker 1: and shouting at her get away from the hill, and
- 19:38Speaker 1: then they and then they freeze dead, like they stop
- 19:41Speaker 1: dead and they're just staring at her in horror, and
- 19:43Speaker 1: everyone else turns to look at her, and she's like,
- 19:46Speaker 1: what's wrong. Then she turns around and she notices that
- 19:49Speaker 1: one of the vines was touching her leg. Now they
- 19:54Speaker 1: didn't see. Now, it's not hint. It doesn't necessarily say
- 19:59Speaker 1: that the vine itself had reached out like had like
- 20:02Speaker 1: reached out and like touched her on purpose. But if
- 20:05Speaker 1: you think about it, with the way the vines act
- 20:07Speaker 1: throughout this book, would I would not be surprised. She
- 20:11Speaker 1: definitely got close enough to where the vines were able
- 20:14Speaker 1: to like sneakly like reach out and touch her. As
- 20:18Speaker 1: soon as it touched her, that's it. The minds immediately
- 20:23Speaker 1: change their tune. So before they were trying to they
- 20:27Speaker 1: were trying to scare off the Americans and get them
- 20:30Speaker 1: away from the hill. But as soon as they see
- 20:32Speaker 1: that Amy had touched the had been touched by the vine,
- 20:37Speaker 1: they all pull up. They all pull up their weapons.
- 20:40Speaker 1: That got the first mind with his with his pistol
- 20:42Speaker 1: and the other two with their bows, and they start
- 20:45Speaker 1: and they start waving the Americans to get onto the
- 20:47Speaker 1: hill and fearing uh you know, reports fearing for their lives.
- 20:55Speaker 1: The group immediately turns and goes up the hill, and
- 21:00Speaker 1: the Mins, while they do come closer, follow the group
- 21:04Speaker 1: closer to the pyramid. After to the hill, after a
- 21:07Speaker 1: certain point they stopped, they don't come any closer to
- 21:09Speaker 1: the hill, but they still make it clear you're you're
- 21:12Speaker 1: not leaving, get on the hill.
- 21:14Speaker 2: You're stuck here.
- 21:15Speaker 1: You're stuck here. And in this part, this is the
- 21:19Speaker 1: part where like the book and the and the movie
- 21:22Speaker 1: were drastically different. So in the in the book, all
- 21:26Speaker 1: five of them are forced up onto the hill, while
- 21:30Speaker 1: in the movie the Mayans were far more aggressive and
- 21:34Speaker 1: as soon as they saw that, because it's funny in
- 21:36Speaker 1: the in the movie it was Stacy who was taking
- 21:39Speaker 1: the pictures and who ends up getting who ends up
- 21:43Speaker 1: touching the vines, right. But when in the movie when
- 21:46Speaker 1: that had happened, the Mayans all start freaking out. They
- 21:49Speaker 1: more aggressively telling the like more aggressively trying to force
- 21:53Speaker 1: them up onto the pyramid. And when they resist that want,
- 21:57Speaker 1: the pistol ends up shooting Pablo.
- 22:02Speaker 2: The Pablo dies right there.
- 22:04Speaker 1: In the movie. Yes, so Pablo dies in the movie,
- 22:06Speaker 1: but in the book, they all end up getting forced
- 22:09Speaker 1: up onto the hill. So, trying to keep calm, they
- 22:14Speaker 1: all just decide, all right, well, might as well just
- 22:17Speaker 1: go check out check out the tent on the top
- 22:19Speaker 1: at the top of the hill. So they follow the
- 22:21Speaker 1: path leading up to the Leading up to the top
- 22:23Speaker 1: of the hill, they find like the they find the
- 22:27Speaker 1: remains of a campsite. There's one tent, like bright orange
- 22:31Speaker 1: tent that's still standing, and there's another blue nylon tent
- 22:33Speaker 1: that looks like it's been shredded, and there's stuff everywhere.
- 22:37Speaker 1: There's equipment, there's uh, supply supplies and uh, you know,
- 22:41Speaker 1: personal belongings from like the previous group that was there.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Matthias immediately starts trying to call out for his brother,
- 22:47Speaker 1: but they can't find anybody. There's no one there. They
- 22:51Speaker 1: All they see are just clumps of vines surrounding the
- 22:53Speaker 1: little campsite, as well as a hole in the ground.
- 22:57Speaker 1: When they get closer, they see this hole goes deep
- 23:00Speaker 1: into the hill. Now they can't see the bottom because
- 23:03Speaker 1: it's just pitch dark at the bottom, but that they
- 23:07Speaker 1: decided to leave that for now. They realize that this
- 23:12Speaker 1: hill is pretty big and there's probably another way off
- 23:16Speaker 1: of it. They also see there's another path leading off
- 23:19Speaker 1: in the other on the other side of the hill.
- 23:21Speaker 1: They decided to try to go down and to see
- 23:23Speaker 1: if they can avoid the mines and get out of there.
- 23:25Speaker 1: But when they get down to the bottom of the hill,
- 23:27Speaker 1: they find that the mines had already circled around and
- 23:30Speaker 1: blocked off that other path. And when they get to
- 23:34Speaker 1: the bottom, the Mians of course point their weapons at
- 23:37Speaker 1: them and make it very clear they're not to leave.
- 23:40Speaker 1: They can't go any further. Matthias is looking looks around
- 23:44Speaker 1: and he notices that there's a clump of vines slightly
- 23:48Speaker 1: further away from where the other groups of vines are,
- 23:51Speaker 1: and he notices that the shape of this like clump
- 23:54Speaker 1: of vines is very different and unusual. So he goes
- 23:58Speaker 1: up to it and he starts pulling the vines apart,
- 24:01Speaker 1: and he finds the body of his younger brother. So
- 24:05Speaker 1: it immediately becomes clear that his brother was did not
- 24:09Speaker 1: make it out of this situation alive. In fact, something
- 24:13Speaker 1: about his brother's corpse, Jeff notices, is weird, uh for starters. Obviously,
- 24:22Speaker 1: Matthias's brother had been killed because he was shot. Because
- 24:25Speaker 1: there are three arrows sticking out of his corpse's chest.
- 24:29Speaker 1: But what's strange is that Matthias's brother had only been
- 24:32Speaker 1: there for me, would have only have been in this
- 24:35Speaker 1: area for maybe about a week or so, and his
- 24:38Speaker 1: corpse already looked like it had been stripped to the bone.
- 24:43Speaker 1: So that's that's suspicious.
- 24:45Speaker 2: That suspicious.
- 24:48Speaker 1: So the only thing left are like or like what
- 24:52Speaker 1: is later described as inorganic parts, So of course his
- 24:56Speaker 1: bones were the only Matthias's brother's bones were only were
- 24:59Speaker 1: the things left like Key's, like metal, any metal object
- 25:04Speaker 1: he was carrying, plastics all right. His clothes and all
- 25:08Speaker 1: of his flesh have been completely stripped from his body.
- 25:13Speaker 1: So the group are now forced back up onto the
- 25:16Speaker 1: hill and they decide to take stock and try to
- 25:19Speaker 1: figure out their next move. While they're figuring things out,
- 25:21Speaker 1: they start hearing a chime like a little ringing sound
- 25:26Speaker 1: coming from the well, and realizing that there's probably a
- 25:32Speaker 1: phone down there for them to be able to call
- 25:34Speaker 1: for help, they try to figure out how they're gonna
- 25:36Speaker 1: get down. They do notice that there is a windless setup,
- 25:40Speaker 1: so that way someone could be lowered down into the pit,
- 25:44Speaker 1: and Pablo, being getting a little too over excited, he
- 25:48Speaker 1: immediately straps himself to the wind list and starts and
- 25:51Speaker 1: has them lower him down into the pit. The thing is,
- 25:54Speaker 1: though they didn't properly check the rope. They didn't check
- 26:00Speaker 1: the rope or the windlass to make sure that it
- 26:02Speaker 1: was fully secure, and they kind of jumped the gun
- 26:04Speaker 1: on this because when Pablo was probably about halfway down
- 26:09Speaker 1: the shaft, the rope snaps. They noticed that the vines
- 26:14Speaker 1: had choked the windless, and there was and the vines
- 26:18Speaker 1: when they were like removing the when they tried cutting
- 26:21Speaker 1: the vines away from the windless, some of its sap
- 26:24Speaker 1: got onto the hemp of the rope. And the thing
- 26:28Speaker 1: is the one the thing is that they learned the
- 26:30Speaker 1: hard way is that the sap from the vines is
- 26:33Speaker 1: highly acidic, and it immediately broke down the hemp on
- 26:38Speaker 1: the rope, causing it to snap. Pablo falls more than
- 26:42Speaker 1: thirty feet and when he lands, he ends up breaking
- 26:45Speaker 1: his back. He survives, but unfortunately his back is broken.
- 26:50Speaker 1: He can't move and now the others have to figure
- 26:52Speaker 1: out a way to get to him and get him
- 26:54Speaker 1: out of the get him out of the well. Now,
- 26:57Speaker 1: in the movie, it was actually Matthias that ends up
- 27:00Speaker 1: going down into the well, and of course the rope
- 27:04Speaker 1: breaks and he's the one that ends up getting breaking
- 27:06Speaker 1: his back. But not in the book. Matthias never breaks
- 27:09Speaker 1: his back in the book, it's just Pablo. They're forced
- 27:13Speaker 1: to pull the remaining rope up and inspect it, and
- 27:16Speaker 1: they see that there's multiple spots where the vine sap
- 27:20Speaker 1: had got onto it and was slowly eating it away,
- 27:23Speaker 1: so they had to trim the rope and also cut
- 27:25Speaker 1: apart some of the leftover nylon from the other tent
- 27:31Speaker 1: and find any other material they can use to secure
- 27:35Speaker 1: the rope and tie it together, and they eventually send
- 27:39Speaker 1: both Amy and Stacey. They've excuse me Amy and Stacy.
- 27:43Speaker 1: They send Eric down into the pit first, but the
- 27:47Speaker 1: thing is the new rope that they made was not
- 27:49Speaker 1: long enough, so he was still about fifteen feet above
- 27:52Speaker 1: the ground. He decides to undo the rope and jump down,
- 27:55Speaker 1: But the thing is when Pablo had jumped down before
- 27:59Speaker 1: had When Pablo had fallen down before, he had a
- 28:02Speaker 1: lantern with him and it had broke, so when he landed,
- 28:05Speaker 1: he ends up skewing his leg with broken glass, essentially
- 28:11Speaker 1: crippling himself like semi crippling himself, and now he's down
- 28:16Speaker 1: there with Pablo, but no way to get him out,
- 28:18Speaker 1: So the others are forced to pull the rope back
- 28:20Speaker 1: up and use more material to make it longer. While
- 28:24Speaker 1: they're waiting, Eric make sure Pablo's okay, but he quickly
- 28:28Speaker 1: sees that Pabolo is not okay. Pablo is in a
- 28:32Speaker 1: lot of pain. His back is broken, and he's lost
- 28:34Speaker 1: all feeling below his legs, below his waist, So Pablo
- 28:39Speaker 1: is completely paralyzed now, at least at least from the
- 28:44Speaker 1: waist down. It's completely paralyzed from the waist down, and
- 28:48Speaker 1: they have no way of They have no way of
- 28:49Speaker 1: moving him. Jeff and Mathias come up with a way
- 28:52Speaker 1: to create a special harness a board for them to
- 28:57Speaker 1: put Pablo on and get him up out of there,
- 29:00Speaker 1: but it takes some time for him to get for
- 29:01Speaker 1: them to put it together. So while so while they're
- 29:04Speaker 1: doing that, Eric is waiting down there with Pablo. He
- 29:08Speaker 1: does look around to try to find where the ringing
- 29:11Speaker 1: is coming from. But while he's down there, he notices
- 29:15Speaker 1: that the ringing seems to be coming from different directions.
- 29:18Speaker 1: One point, he hears like here's like it's coming from
- 29:20Speaker 1: in front of him, then beside him, and then right
- 29:22Speaker 1: behind him. And at one point he does notice that
- 29:24Speaker 1: there is a tunnel leading off from this main area
- 29:28Speaker 1: that he had landed in, and it sounds, and that's
- 29:31Speaker 1: where he determined. He does determine that the sound is
- 29:34Speaker 1: definitely coming from down that tunnel, but since he does
- 29:37Speaker 1: not have since the lantern he brought does not have
- 29:39Speaker 1: a lot enough oil to keep burning long enough for
- 29:42Speaker 1: him to search for it, and because of his injured leg,
- 29:45Speaker 1: he decides not to go down the He decides not
- 29:49Speaker 1: to go look for it. Now the focus should be
- 29:50Speaker 1: on Pablo. Eventually, they do get a board down, They
- 29:54Speaker 1: do make a board, They make a secure board to
- 29:57Speaker 1: get Pablo out. They send Stacy down with I'm sorry nowastays.
- 30:01Speaker 1: They sent Amy down to help Eric get Pablo onto
- 30:05Speaker 1: it and get them all out, and this is where
- 30:09Speaker 1: things start to like They definitely start to like become
- 30:13Speaker 1: more paranoid. They set watches every night throughout the night
- 30:17Speaker 1: to keep an eye on Pablo because his back is broken.
- 30:21Speaker 1: They had to treat him. They had to treat him
- 30:23Speaker 1: in secure and embrace his back to keep him from
- 30:25Speaker 1: uh moving too much. Pablo is practically comatos. He he
- 30:29Speaker 1: was in a lot of pain and there's just a
- 30:31Speaker 1: lot of screaming going on after he broke his back,
- 30:35Speaker 1: and they have to basically and they rather than put
- 30:38Speaker 1: him inside the tent, because unfortunately Pablo has completely lost
- 30:41Speaker 1: control of his bowel, his bowel movements. Uh, they decide
- 30:45Speaker 1: to just create like a sort of lean to using
- 30:48Speaker 1: the remains of the other tent, so that we'll give
- 30:50Speaker 1: him some cover and also keep him in an area,
- 30:54Speaker 1: a separate area where he can rest and recover as
- 30:57Speaker 1: much as possible while the other Now, throughout the night,
- 31:00Speaker 1: while everyone is sleeping, things do begin to happen. Some
- 31:04Speaker 1: strange things start happening. Jeff tries to go down and
- 31:08Speaker 1: sneak off the hill to sneak past the Mayans, but
- 31:12Speaker 1: he noted he immediately notices that the that from the
- 31:16Speaker 1: three original three mines that showed up and trapped them
- 31:19Speaker 1: on the hill, the entire it seemed like the entire
- 31:22Speaker 1: village had surrounded the pyramid, and they'd set up bonfires
- 31:26Speaker 1: at regular intervals, making it to where no where, there's
- 31:30Speaker 1: like no gaps, no way for them to sneak out
- 31:33Speaker 1: in the darkness. But even so he tried to sneak
- 31:37Speaker 1: down the hill to see maybe he could find a
- 31:38Speaker 1: gap that he could go through, and he does see one,
- 31:42Speaker 1: like there's a gap, like a slight gap between two
- 31:44Speaker 1: bonfires and the things that maybe if he's able, if
- 31:47Speaker 1: he's quiet enough, he could sneak past them. But as
- 31:50Speaker 1: he's going down the sneaking down the hill, he immediately
- 31:53Speaker 1: hears what sounds like a huge like like a huge
- 31:56Speaker 1: flock of birds crying out. There's a lot of chirping
- 32:00Speaker 1: and cawing, and this immediately gives him away and the
- 32:03Speaker 1: Mayans quickly find him, and so he's forced to turn
- 32:07Speaker 1: back the next morning. This is where it gets interesting.
- 32:14Speaker 1: The next morning, Eric wakes up and he looks down
- 32:19Speaker 1: at his leg and sees that one of the vines
- 32:22Speaker 1: had grown into the tent and wrapped itself around his leg,
- 32:26Speaker 1: and one of the vine, one of the little tendrils
- 32:28Speaker 1: of the vine, had dug itself into the cut on
- 32:31Speaker 1: his knee. Yep, it had dug itself straight into the knee,
- 32:39Speaker 1: right into his injury. He starts, he freaks out. They
- 32:43Speaker 1: have to cut it out of him and pull the
- 32:45Speaker 1: damn vine out, and then when they go to check
- 32:48Speaker 1: on Pablo while the while he's freaking out, they start
- 32:50Speaker 1: noticing that Pablo is also freaking out because they hear
- 32:53Speaker 1: him screaming. So they all run outside and go check
- 32:56Speaker 1: on him. And the thing is to keep him. No,
- 32:59Speaker 1: he's alive. He's still alive. That's the worst part, oh,
- 33:05Speaker 1: all right. But what's even worse than that is that
- 33:07Speaker 1: they had covered his lower body to keep him warm.
- 33:10Speaker 1: They covered him, they covered his legs to keep him
- 33:13Speaker 1: warm throughout the night, and they noticed that he They
- 33:17Speaker 1: noticed that while he's freaking out, he's looking down at
- 33:19Speaker 1: his legs because he could tell something's wrong. He doesn't
- 33:22Speaker 1: feel any pain, but he knows something's wrong. They pull
- 33:25Speaker 1: away the blanket and they seem that they see that
- 33:29Speaker 1: the vines had completely covered his lower legs. Is they
- 33:33Speaker 1: had completely wrapped themselves around his legs below his knee.
- 33:37Speaker 1: So they start they cut away the vines, but as
- 33:39Speaker 1: soon as they break enough of the vines away to
- 33:41Speaker 1: reveal his legs, they see that the flesh from his
- 33:44Speaker 1: legs from like this point go like from below his
- 33:48Speaker 1: shin down to his feet had been completely stripped of flesh.
- 33:54Speaker 1: The vines had had devoured his legs. The only thing
- 33:59Speaker 1: left bone you yep. Now, of course the flesh from
- 34:06Speaker 1: like above his shin up to his knee, and of
- 34:08Speaker 1: course up to the rest of his body was still intact.
- 34:11Speaker 1: But everything below is like below midshin was completely devoured.
- 34:18Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not really.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Now they're starting to freak out because this confirms what
- 34:24Speaker 1: Jeff had suspected the day before. Because the day before,
- 34:28Speaker 1: while they after they had gotten Pablo out of the
- 34:31Speaker 1: after they had gotten Pablo out of the well, Jeff
- 34:33Speaker 1: had explored the perimeter of the hill. He went down
- 34:37Speaker 1: to the very bottom and while the Mins wouldn't let
- 34:39Speaker 1: him go any further, they didn't they didn't really complain
- 34:42Speaker 1: when he started walking the perimeter. And as he was
- 34:44Speaker 1: walking the perimeter, he noticed that there were other mounds
- 34:47Speaker 1: surrounding the hill, similar to the one they found Heinrich's
- 34:50Speaker 1: brother in And as he's walking, he would pull away
- 34:53Speaker 1: the vines and he would notice that there are more bodies,
- 34:58Speaker 1: of course, and Jeff began to suspect that the that
- 35:06Speaker 1: the Mayans, they're not keeping them there just because they're assholes.
- 35:10Speaker 1: There's there's a reason why they're not letting them leave.
- 35:13Speaker 1: And he also notices that there's this strange green substance
- 35:16Speaker 1: beginning to cover his clothes as well as the other clothes,
- 35:20Speaker 1: as everyone else's clothes as well, and he's noticing strange things,
- 35:24Speaker 1: like the vines seemed to react in a weird way.
- 35:27Speaker 1: At one point, he tried to set up like at
- 35:30Speaker 1: one point when he came down the hill, he pulled up.
- 35:33Speaker 1: He grabbed a pole from one of the camping supplies,
- 35:37Speaker 1: nailed it into the ground, hammered it into the ground
- 35:40Speaker 1: at the base of the hill, and put a sign
- 35:42Speaker 1: on it that said danger, keep away. And then after
- 35:45Speaker 1: that he circled the hill, found in the other bodies,
- 35:48Speaker 1: started noticing some strange activity among the vines. And when
- 35:51Speaker 1: he got back to where he started, he noticed that
- 35:53Speaker 1: the sign was gone. And he looked around and thought
- 35:59Speaker 1: maybe the vines had done it, but he realized the
- 36:02Speaker 1: mines are not coming anywhere near the hill. They won't
- 36:05Speaker 1: go past a certain point. And when he looks around
- 36:09Speaker 1: a little bit more, he notices that the vines had
- 36:12Speaker 1: somehow pulled the sign down and they were hiding it.
- 36:17Speaker 1: They had wrapped themselves around. The vines had wrapped itself
- 36:20Speaker 1: around the sign, pulled it down and dragged it deeper
- 36:24Speaker 1: into itself. And when he goes to when he searches
- 36:28Speaker 1: for the sign, he finds it, But he also finds
- 36:30Speaker 1: another sign too, like it seemed like a previous group
- 36:34Speaker 1: had tried doing the same thing with a cast iron skillet.
- 36:38Speaker 1: They had taken a skillet and they had carved on
- 36:42Speaker 1: the bottom of it the word danger in Spanish, and
- 36:47Speaker 1: it was also hidden deep in the vines as well.
- 36:49Speaker 1: He took that and went back up the hill and
- 36:51Speaker 1: told everyone what he discovered. And then the next morning
- 36:54Speaker 1: they the next morning when they found that a vine
- 36:59Speaker 1: had dug it self into Eric's leg and the and
- 37:01Speaker 1: the vines had completely eaten away Pablo's legs, they realized
- 37:05Speaker 1: that the vines are a lot more dangerous than they realized.
- 37:12Speaker 1: And here's where things get fucked up. When when is
- 37:19Speaker 1: it all happened like Jeff had gone down, had gone
- 37:24Speaker 1: back down to the to the base of the hill.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Because this happened. The next day, Jeff gone down to
- 37:27Speaker 1: the base of the hill, tried sitting up the sign
- 37:30Speaker 1: and found the other mounds right. But when he had
- 37:34Speaker 1: done that, he didn't notice that that Pablo what had
- 37:38Speaker 1: happened to Pablo or even to Eric, he just gone
- 37:41Speaker 1: straight down to the hill. So when he came back up,
- 37:43Speaker 1: he had his suspicions that the vines were somehow responsible.
- 37:48Speaker 1: They're dangerous, but everyone else up at the top of
- 37:52Speaker 1: the hill had found out the hard way. So they
- 37:55Speaker 1: found out through Pablo's legs and Jeff's.
- 37:58Speaker 5: Leg but they also found out through a more disgusting,
- 38:03Speaker 5: a little bit more disgusting way, because Amy, after seeing
- 38:07Speaker 5: Paulo's legs had been completely eaten away by the vines,
- 38:10Speaker 5: she turned around and she vomited on the ground out of.
- 38:14Speaker 1: Just sheer horror. She couldn't hold it in. And after
- 38:17Speaker 1: she vomited and like stepped away to clean herself up,
- 38:20Speaker 1: everyone like noticed that the vines began to move more.
- 38:26Speaker 1: And while her back was turned, Stacy and Matthias saw
- 38:31Speaker 1: something behind her, and they like you could see their
- 38:34Speaker 1: faces just like completely like freeze and horror. When she
- 38:37Speaker 1: turns around, she sees a vine snaking itself out from
- 38:43Speaker 1: the masses, like a single vine, and the way it
- 38:45Speaker 1: was slithering out it almost looked like it was very snakelike.
- 38:49Speaker 1: And the vine went up to the puddle of her
- 38:51Speaker 1: vomit curled itself around it and you could hear like
- 38:54Speaker 1: they could hear like this audible sucking sound. So yeah,
- 38:59Speaker 1: the vine ate her vomit. And as soon as it
- 39:02Speaker 1: was done, it pulled itself back into the into the
- 39:05Speaker 1: mounds of other vines. So there, So there they all
- 39:08Speaker 1: are just standing there, barbecue sauce on their titties, having
- 39:11Speaker 1: just realized that the the vines are carnivorous and they're dangerous.
- 39:16Speaker 1: And then Jeff comes up. He's like, hey, guys, I
- 39:18Speaker 1: think the vines are dangerous, and everyone else you think
- 39:25Speaker 1: and they and he's like, what what happened? Look, and
- 39:27Speaker 1: they point out Pablo's legs and they also point and
- 39:30Speaker 1: they also tell them what happened with the vine eating
- 39:32Speaker 1: the vomit. So Jeff inspects Pablo's legs and realize and
- 39:38Speaker 1: sees what had happened, and he realizes that they're gonna
- 39:41Speaker 1: need to They're gonna need to operate on Pablo's legs
- 39:46Speaker 1: because the thing is, Jeff is a medical student, so
- 39:48Speaker 1: he is training to become a doctor, and he does
- 39:51Speaker 1: know more or less some of the some medical stuff,
- 39:55Speaker 1: and he realizes that they don't treat Pablo. Soon he's
- 39:58Speaker 1: going to bleed out because there's nothing holding there's no
- 40:01Speaker 1: flesh below his leg, below his knees, so he's gonna
- 40:04Speaker 1: he's gonna bleed out, and he's gonna also probably suffer
- 40:08Speaker 1: a severe infection. So the thing is, most of the
- 40:13Speaker 1: people in the group were very were opposed to it
- 40:17Speaker 1: because but unfortunately, like he his The thing is, he
- 40:22Speaker 1: tells him that it's either that or he dies, like
- 40:26Speaker 1: they got to cut off his legs or he's gonna die.
- 40:29Speaker 1: And while no one is entirely happy about it, they
- 40:33Speaker 1: they relent and Matthias helps him prep Pablo for the procedure.
- 40:39Speaker 1: And because they don't have like proper tools to cut
- 40:41Speaker 1: through his bones, because the joint is fine, there's still
- 40:45Speaker 1: flesh like above his shin, it's just below that. So
- 40:51Speaker 1: Jeff unfortunately has to make do with a sharp rock
- 40:54Speaker 1: and a boot knife and manages to saw and break
- 41:00Speaker 1: through the Pablo's bones and cauterize it. You know, essentially,
- 41:04Speaker 1: they do save They do save Pablo's life by cutting
- 41:10Speaker 1: off his leg at his legs and cauterizing them, but
- 41:13Speaker 1: they do end up watching the vines reach out and
- 41:15Speaker 1: like take the severed legs. They try to stop it
- 41:20Speaker 1: but every But the thing is that the sap being
- 41:22Speaker 1: very acidic, it burns them every time they like break
- 41:24Speaker 1: through the vines. Like every time they like break a
- 41:28Speaker 1: break or cut through a vine, the sap coats their
- 41:30Speaker 1: hands and it does cause their hands to blister and bleed,
- 41:34Speaker 1: so they aren't able to get They aren't really able
- 41:37Speaker 1: to save the severed legs because they didn't want the
- 41:39Speaker 1: vines to take them, but the vines were like.
- 41:41Speaker 2: My, it's mine now.
- 41:47Speaker 1: So the rest of so after this significant like, so
- 41:54Speaker 1: they don't really last very long. I will say that
- 41:56Speaker 1: they only last maybe about two days before they're all dead.
- 42:01Speaker 1: Pablo's they saved Pablo's life for the time being. The
- 42:04Speaker 1: thing is, though Eric had begun developing a form of psychosis,
- 42:08Speaker 1: he begins developing like a huge, large sense of paranoia
- 42:14Speaker 1: because after the vine had dug itself into his wound,
- 42:17Speaker 1: he believes that there's still part of it inside of him.
- 42:22Speaker 1: And while everyone else is like, no, that you're fine,
- 42:25Speaker 1: it's not it's not inside of you, he's not convinced,
- 42:28Speaker 1: and he keeps trying to tell them that it's it's
- 42:31Speaker 1: inside me, like help they have to theyby's have to
- 42:37Speaker 1: keep an eye on him, because several times where he
- 42:41Speaker 1: tries to sneak the knife away and start cutting into himself,
- 42:44Speaker 1: and at one point he does manage to do it,
- 42:47Speaker 1: and he cuts into himself and tries to dig something out,
- 42:50Speaker 1: but he's not able to find anything. And another day
- 42:55Speaker 1: goes by, and like he wakes up the next morning
- 42:57Speaker 1: and finds that the vines have grown themselves, have grown
- 42:59Speaker 1: into him again, because he'd he had cut himself open
- 43:03Speaker 1: a couple more times, like especially around the wound that
- 43:05Speaker 1: he originally initially got, and then another wound he gave
- 43:08Speaker 1: himself on his other leg because he cut himself in
- 43:11Speaker 1: because he had a wound on his leg, and then
- 43:14Speaker 1: he had cut it into himself below his like in
- 43:16Speaker 1: his rib cage. So when he woke up the next morning,
- 43:19Speaker 1: the vines had grown themselves, had grown back, like around
- 43:22Speaker 1: those two new wounds, and they had to cut it
- 43:28Speaker 1: out of him, and he was still convinced that they
- 43:30Speaker 1: are the vines were growing inside of him. And so
- 43:42Speaker 1: I will say like for this next stretch of the book,
- 43:45Speaker 1: it was very it was kind of boring because it's
- 43:51Speaker 1: just a lot of them trying to survive. They they're
- 43:53Speaker 1: trying to ration out their food. But the thing is
- 43:56Speaker 1: is that they're all starting to become problematic. Stacy, she
- 44:03Speaker 1: for the most part, is in shock, and she seems
- 44:05Speaker 1: very apathetic. She does she's like kind of entered in
- 44:08Speaker 1: this like she doesn't know what to do and doesn't
- 44:10Speaker 1: know how to react, so she's in this sort of
- 44:14Speaker 1: fuge state. Eric is stuck in this like paranoid state
- 44:18Speaker 1: of like it's inside me, it's inside me, like I
- 44:21Speaker 1: need to cut it out. Mathias is keeping is the
- 44:24Speaker 1: only one who seems to be keeping us cool. Jeff
- 44:26Speaker 1: is trying to be like the is the boy scout.
- 44:28Speaker 1: He's trying to like rally the troops, keep everyone calm.
- 44:33Speaker 1: And of course Pablo is Pablo my legs. And I
- 44:41Speaker 1: will say that I think the most problematic person, at
- 44:44Speaker 1: least in my opinion, is Amy, because Jeff makes it
- 44:49Speaker 1: clear that if they're going to survive, they need to
- 44:51Speaker 1: ration what little supplies they have. They only have snack food,
- 44:54Speaker 1: like very little snack foods, like like several like maybe
- 44:57Speaker 1: like a bag of mix of like trail mix. They
- 45:01Speaker 1: had like some grap some leftover grapes that they brought
- 45:04Speaker 1: with them, some old bananas and orange. They had very
- 45:09Speaker 1: little to work with, and they also had a limited
- 45:12Speaker 1: supply of water. But hey, guess what Pablo brought like
- 45:15Speaker 1: three bottles of vodka.
- 45:20Speaker 2: Of course, of course, like you do.
- 45:22Speaker 1: And Jeff made it clear that they should not drink
- 45:25Speaker 1: any alcohol because that'll only make them more dehydrated. But
- 45:28Speaker 1: here's the thing. The first night, Amy works wakes up
- 45:33Speaker 1: in the middle of the night and she's she's super thirsty,
- 45:36Speaker 1: and she's like, all right, well, she knows that they
- 45:38Speaker 1: have to rah in their water, so she decides like, okay,
- 45:40Speaker 1: she'll just take her ration and just take a sip. Right, Well,
- 45:43Speaker 1: she takes her set and then she takes like two
- 45:45Speaker 1: big gulps of though of their leftover water. And Jeff
- 45:49Speaker 1: sees this, and she gets mad and plays the victim,
- 45:52Speaker 1: like tries to play the victim. She's like, oh, fuck you,
- 45:54Speaker 1: I'm thirsty.
- 45:56Speaker 6: Like like, don't judge me, I'm just trying to get
- 46:00Speaker 6: some water. Like like, girl, you are in you are
- 46:03Speaker 6: stuck on a pyramid with little to know food or water,
- 46:07Speaker 6: and you're stealing rations.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Like don't play the victim here, you have no you
- 46:14Speaker 1: have no right to play the victim. Period, and then
- 46:17Speaker 1: later on like the next day after the whole like
- 46:21Speaker 1: later the next day after they had amputated Pablo's legs
- 46:26Speaker 1: like she and She and Stacy are basically like losing
- 46:29Speaker 1: their shit because they don't know what to do. They
- 46:31Speaker 1: think that they should try to find a way off
- 46:34Speaker 1: off the hill, but at the same time, they don't
- 46:36Speaker 1: think they need to like be that strict with the
- 46:38Speaker 1: rations because they know that Pablo had left a note
- 46:41Speaker 1: for his for his other two friends and they'll soon
- 46:45Speaker 1: be there to rescue them, right, But Jack is trying
- 46:49Speaker 1: to be practical and he's telling them, like, we can't
- 46:52Speaker 1: we can't rely on that, Okay, we can't. We can't
- 46:57Speaker 1: act like they're actually gonna come. They may not even come,
- 47:00Speaker 1: and if they do, they may not come for another week.
- 47:03Speaker 1: So we have to ration everything. Now they are safe
- 47:07Speaker 1: because regularly it does rain. They do experience several rainstorms
- 47:11Speaker 1: and they're able to collect more water. But water is cool,
- 47:15Speaker 1: but they still need food, so they still have to
- 47:17Speaker 1: ration the food. But the thing is not wanting to
- 47:20Speaker 1: deal with the stress of what they've been going through,
- 47:23Speaker 1: Stacey and an Amy decided to like pop open the
- 47:27Speaker 1: remaining bottles of the of the the vodka that was
- 47:34Speaker 1: not good tequila. It was alcohol, straight up hardcore alcohol.
- 47:38Speaker 1: That's what it is, all right. They decided to pop
- 47:42Speaker 1: open one of the remaining bottles of uh. I think
- 47:45Speaker 1: it was tequila because they're because Mexico.
- 47:49Speaker 2: Is the Mexico tequila.
- 47:51Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't want to make that generalization, but I
- 47:53Speaker 1: think it was tequila. I was, honestly, I wasn't really
- 47:56Speaker 1: paying attention to the to the kind of alcohol they
- 47:59Speaker 1: decided to indulge in. I was like, more like, man,
- 48:03Speaker 1: these these girls are idiots. I was like, I'm over here, like,
- 48:05Speaker 1: these two are idiots. They get they get wasted, right,
- 48:10Speaker 1: the two proceed to get wasted and things. Jeff and
- 48:14Speaker 1: Matthias and the others have been like taking turns, like
- 48:17Speaker 1: sitting at the bottom of the hill to try to
- 48:19Speaker 1: like catch the Greeks if they do show up. And
- 48:24Speaker 1: when he comes when his shift ended and he comes
- 48:26Speaker 1: back up, he sees how wasted the two of them are,
- 48:29Speaker 1: and he does get upset, but he doesn't say anything
- 48:31Speaker 1: to him. He's just like disappointed in the two of
- 48:33Speaker 1: them and more disappointed in the two of them. Eventually,
- 48:39Speaker 1: after that, after that and the next after that it
- 48:42Speaker 1: does rain. They get more water, and Amy and Stacey
- 48:44Speaker 1: are able to sober up with the rain marker that
- 48:46Speaker 1: they're able to catch. But still later on Jeff does
- 48:50Speaker 1: Jeff and Amy do get into a pretty massive argument.
- 48:53Speaker 1: I don't know now that argument comes like near the
- 48:56Speaker 1: end of the next day. But the next day that's
- 48:58Speaker 1: where things start to kind of start to really like
- 49:01Speaker 1: like this is like the third day, they're trapped on
- 49:03Speaker 1: the on the hill. That's this is where things start
- 49:06Speaker 1: to take a turn. They repair the rope for the
- 49:11Speaker 1: windlass and they send both Jeff and Amy down into
- 49:16Speaker 1: the down into the well again to try to find
- 49:19Speaker 1: the phone because they keep hearing the phone ringing and
- 49:24Speaker 1: they follow the sound going into the tunnel. Into that
- 49:28Speaker 1: tunnel they found but Jeff stops. But Jeff stops them
- 49:33Speaker 1: and he's like, there's no phone. He realizes something horrifying
- 49:37Speaker 1: and that one there is no phone. It's there was
- 49:40Speaker 1: never a phone ringing, and two it was the vines.
- 49:46Speaker 1: The vines. Now, Jeff had a theory that the vines
- 49:49Speaker 1: may actually be more than just a carnivorous plant, but
- 49:53Speaker 1: they may actually be intelligent, and they proves it because
- 49:58Speaker 1: the because the vine had been mimicking the sound of
- 50:01Speaker 1: the phone of a cell phone ringing, and the thing
- 50:05Speaker 1: and the sound that the vines were making was luring
- 50:08Speaker 1: them to another pit. So there was like another pit
- 50:11Speaker 1: down that tunnel, and if they had kept going, they
- 50:14Speaker 1: would have fallen down it. They wouldn't have seen it,
- 50:16Speaker 1: and they would have fallen down because the vines were
- 50:18Speaker 1: covering the pit to make it look like it was
- 50:21Speaker 1: still a solid surface. But Jeff noticed it in time
- 50:24Speaker 1: and pulled both him and Amy back. The two ran
- 50:26Speaker 1: back towards the ran back to the Windless, but when
- 50:30Speaker 1: they were running back, the vines began to attack them
- 50:33Speaker 1: and try to ensnare them. They managed to break free,
- 50:35Speaker 1: and Jeff was smart enough to bring a bottle, one
- 50:39Speaker 1: of the last bottles of tequila with him. He took
- 50:42Speaker 1: a rag, soaked it, lit it on fire, and tossed
- 50:45Speaker 1: it as a Molotov cocktail, and that managed to hold
- 50:49Speaker 1: off the vines. But they noticed that the vines. While
- 50:53Speaker 1: they were waiting for the wind List to be lowered down,
- 50:56Speaker 1: they noticed that the vines were making another sound and
- 50:59Speaker 1: sound it as if like something was shuffling toward them,
- 51:05Speaker 1: like something was like walking like heavy like footsteps, and
- 51:11Speaker 1: this was freaking them out even more, but they managed
- 51:13Speaker 1: the windlass managed to get lowered down in time, and
- 51:15Speaker 1: they both were pulled out. After that. This is like
- 51:19Speaker 1: where like they basically become more like like their spirits
- 51:24Speaker 1: have become more broken. Amy and Jeff do eventually get
- 51:28Speaker 1: into a big argument. Amy trying to like you made.
- 51:34Speaker 1: If you read this book, you may disagree with me,
- 51:38Speaker 1: but I felt like Amy was playing the victim a
- 51:40Speaker 1: lot here and she was trying to pass the blame
- 51:43Speaker 1: off to Jeff. Yeah. Now, understandably, Jeff has his own
- 51:49Speaker 1: part to play in this whole thing. He was the
- 51:52Speaker 1: one that, you know, convinced them all to go with
- 51:54Speaker 1: Matthias to attempt to go try to find his brother, right,
- 52:00Speaker 1: So if it wasn't for him, yes, they probably wouldn't
- 52:03Speaker 1: have been there. But here's the thing. When Jeff wasn't around,
- 52:07Speaker 1: Stacy and Amy got into an argument, had gotten into
- 52:11Speaker 1: an argument with each other, and Eric was also part
- 52:15Speaker 1: of it. And the things that they were saying to
- 52:17Speaker 1: each other, the vines were listening in and they started
- 52:21Speaker 1: throwing their words back at them. So the vines were
- 52:23Speaker 1: basically like parroting everything they were saying. So it was
- 52:27Speaker 1: kind of funny because this causes like more like mistrust
- 52:32Speaker 1: between them because Eric makes it like Eric, who had
- 52:36Speaker 1: gotten drunk, had said some things about Matthias, like like,
- 52:41Speaker 1: you know, if they ever made a movie about us,
- 52:43Speaker 1: who do you think would play us? Right? And then
- 52:46Speaker 1: he makes a comment about how like they'd make Matthias
- 52:48Speaker 1: the villain of the story because he's German and you
- 52:51Speaker 1: know Nazis. It's basically called Matthias a Nazi. And when
- 52:57Speaker 1: Amy and Stacey were like freaking out at each other,
- 53:01Speaker 1: Amy blurts out that, like on the reason, like she's
- 53:05Speaker 1: like freaking out, She's like, if it was because of me,
- 53:08Speaker 1: I'm the reason why we're stuck up here. If I
- 53:10Speaker 1: wasn't trying to take a picture, I wouldn't have gotten
- 53:12Speaker 1: touched by the I wouldn't have touched the vines, and
- 53:14Speaker 1: we wouldn't be trapped up here. Blah. And then later
- 53:18Speaker 1: on she and Jeff start arguing with each other and
- 53:22Speaker 1: like she had been drinking more and so but this time,
- 53:26Speaker 1: rather than like admit that like she was also in
- 53:29Speaker 1: the wrong, rather you know, own up to like what
- 53:31Speaker 1: she's been doing how she's been acting, because you know,
- 53:34Speaker 1: she and Stacy like after their argument ended up eating
- 53:38Speaker 1: pretty much the rest of their food. They just chow
- 53:42Speaker 1: decided to just chow down, so there was hardly any
- 53:44Speaker 1: food left, and that's what started the argument between her
- 53:47Speaker 1: and Jeff and like, rather than own up to what
- 53:51Speaker 1: she'd been doing, like the fact that she's drinking, she's
- 53:53Speaker 1: wasting their their very limited supplies. You know, she's trying
- 54:00Speaker 1: to play the victims like, well, it's not my fault
- 54:02Speaker 1: we're here, You're the reason why we're here, blah blah blah.
- 54:05Speaker 1: And then at that point, the vines start throwing back
- 54:07Speaker 1: her worst as she said earlier, like basically like throwing
- 54:11Speaker 1: it back at her like like that Taylor Swift song
- 54:15Speaker 1: it's me, I'm I'm the problem. It'smids me, Oh my god,
- 54:21Speaker 1: like like it was me, I'm the problem. And she's
- 54:24Speaker 1: just staring, She's standing there. Jeff is like looking at
- 54:27Speaker 1: her like, you know, like I'm sorry, you want to
- 54:30Speaker 1: say that again? Who is the Who's the reason why
- 54:35Speaker 1: we're here? Now? Like who's the problem again? Because I
- 54:38Speaker 1: think the vines are on my side here, Like, of
- 54:42Speaker 1: course that's not exactly what they said, but like, when
- 54:45Speaker 1: you think about it, it's pretty I thought it was
- 54:46Speaker 1: funny because the vines like just chimed in right when
- 54:49Speaker 1: she's trying to like play herself off as a victim.
- 54:52Speaker 1: And then the vines were like.
- 54:54Speaker 2: Actually, like correct, girl, let's check your ass.
- 54:58Speaker 1: Like check your ass. And then the thing is she's playing.
- 55:02Speaker 1: This is like a total narcissist meltdown right here. Because
- 55:04Speaker 1: she's playing, she's trying hard to play the victim. She
- 55:07Speaker 1: starts crying, balling her eyes out. She runs off, curls
- 55:10Speaker 1: up into a ball and just sobbing right trying to
- 55:13Speaker 1: get Jeff to feel sympathy for her. But Jeff is
- 55:16Speaker 1: just so done with her bullshit that he just like
- 55:21Speaker 1: doesn't respond to her. He just ignores her. Right. Eventually,
- 55:24Speaker 1: she gets up and she tries to go up to him,
- 55:26Speaker 1: but because of how wasted she is, she ends up
- 55:28Speaker 1: vomiting again, and in like her messed up state, she
- 55:34Speaker 1: passes out and Jeff just leaves her, just leaves her
- 55:37Speaker 1: there and goes to sleep. Now this is where Jeff
- 55:40Speaker 1: made like, I think Jeff is a bit of the asshole.
- 55:42Speaker 1: He should have checked up on her and made sure
- 55:44Speaker 1: she was okay, because the next morning she doesn't wake up.
- 55:51Speaker 1: They wait, they get up. Next morning, they go check
- 55:54Speaker 1: up on her and Pablo and they realize that she's
- 55:57Speaker 1: not breathing. Yeah, and no, she did not choke on
- 56:02Speaker 1: her vomit. She choked on the vine that ate her vomit. Yeah,
- 56:07Speaker 1: you know, m Yeah, So the vine, being attracted to
- 56:11Speaker 1: the bile that she had, being attracted to the bile,
- 56:15Speaker 1: it slithered up, sucked up the vomit that she threw up,
- 56:19Speaker 1: and and sensing that there was still more bile in
- 56:22Speaker 1: her mouth, it shoved itself down her throat and she choked,
- 56:27Speaker 1: and she ends up dying in the night. So that's
- 56:29Speaker 1: how Amy dies.
- 56:31Speaker 7: Yeah, And unfortunately, even though Pablo had had started coming
- 56:36Speaker 7: to and he was starting to recover more or less,
- 56:40Speaker 7: Pablo unfortunately later ends up dying in much the same
- 56:44Speaker 7: way the while.
- 56:45Speaker 1: He was vulnerable. While he was vulnerable, the vines ended
- 56:49Speaker 1: up also choking him to death as well by slithering
- 56:53Speaker 1: down his throat. That happened during a rainstorm. So after stay,
- 56:59Speaker 1: after Amy had died, they tried to they tried to
- 57:03Speaker 1: bury her body, but they couldn't really dig through the
- 57:06Speaker 1: hard packed earth. Of the hell that they're on, so
- 57:09Speaker 1: they end up wrapping her body in sleeping bag. After
- 57:12Speaker 1: they'd done that, it started raining again, but this time
- 57:16Speaker 1: it was like a full on like monsoon, so they
- 57:19Speaker 1: were all forced to take shelter. And after the rain
- 57:23Speaker 1: they come out to expect, inspect, inspect, like what was
- 57:27Speaker 1: left with the campsite. They find that the vines had
- 57:30Speaker 1: had broken into the sleeping bag and completely devoured Amy's corpse,
- 57:34Speaker 1: so nothing is left but bones and they and they
- 57:39Speaker 1: check on Pablo, and the thing is, they weren't They
- 57:41Speaker 1: didn't properly secure Pablo, like make sure he was sheltered properly,
- 57:45Speaker 1: and the vines ended up killing him too. He's dead,
- 57:53Speaker 1: they find they go through after he died. After he dies,
- 57:57Speaker 1: they go through his stuff and they find his passport
- 57:59Speaker 1: and find out his real name is Demetrius, not pob Long,
- 58:04Speaker 1: and they're like by Demetrius, and the vines end up
- 58:07Speaker 1: enshrouding his body and devouring it too. Later that night.
- 58:14Speaker 1: The thing is, though, when it had rained during the rainstorm,
- 58:19Speaker 1: Jeff had stayed down at the bottom of the hill
- 58:21Speaker 1: because he was still dealing dealing with he was dealing
- 58:24Speaker 1: with guilt over what happened with Amy, Like he doesn't
- 58:28Speaker 1: feel like he was at fault for like the things
- 58:30Speaker 1: that Amy had said, but he did feel like he
- 58:32Speaker 1: does feel guilty that he didn't check up on her.
- 58:36Speaker 1: And while when the rainstorm started, he noticed that all
- 58:39Speaker 1: of the Mayans had taken shelter right and the bonfires
- 58:42Speaker 1: had been smothered by the rain, and he realizes that
- 58:46Speaker 1: now visibility is very, very low, so there's a possible
- 58:52Speaker 1: there was a chance that Jeff could actually escape the
- 58:56Speaker 1: escape the hill, and he decides, fuck it, he's gonna
- 58:59Speaker 1: try it. So he tries to sneak across the across
- 59:04Speaker 1: the clearing, he sees what may have been an opening
- 59:07Speaker 1: for him to get through, but there was still one
- 59:09Speaker 1: mine standing in the middle of the clearing because the
- 59:12Speaker 1: mine had seen him on the hill, like seeing him
- 59:15Speaker 1: down at the base of the hill, so it was
- 59:17Speaker 1: still they were still standing there making sure he doesn't leave.
- 59:22Speaker 1: And he tried to sneak around the mine, but somehow
- 59:25Speaker 1: I guess the mine still saw him, and the mine
- 59:28Speaker 1: shoots him twice, shoots him once the arrow goes straight
- 59:34Speaker 1: through his throat and out the other ends like it
- 59:37Speaker 1: didn't just like it didn't embed himself in its neck.
- 59:39Speaker 1: The arrow went clean cleane through. But the thing is
- 59:44Speaker 1: is that there's like a gap like in your neck
- 59:46Speaker 1: right here, of like between your muscle and your larynx.
- 59:50Speaker 1: So the arrow just passed cleanly through so didn't hit
- 59:53Speaker 1: anything major still left a hole in his neck, but
- 59:56Speaker 1: he was still good. He was like, okay, I can
- 59:58Speaker 1: still do it. I could make it. Next one hit
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: him in the chest, yep. So the next one hit
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: him in the side, went through his chest. That brought
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: him down. The thing is, Jeff had not made it
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: that far into the clearing, and he was still close
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: enough to the hill that the vines, sensing his blood,
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: reached out, wrapped themselves around him and pulled him back
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: to the hill. And even though he was very weakly
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: trying to break free, the vines end up completely enshrouding
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: him and they end up killing him. And then of
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: course morning comes after it finished raining state, the only
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: people left are Stacy, Eric and Matthias. Eric is still
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: in his in a bit of a fugue state, thinking
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: that the vine has been is growing inside of him,
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: so they pretty much leave don't pay much attention to him.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: After Stacy and Athia takes stock of the now dead
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: Pablo and State and Amy's now fully devoured corpse. They
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: notice that Jeff had not come back from the base
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: of the hill. They go down to the They go
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: down the hill and they see a new mound. And
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: the thing is is that before the vine seems to
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: have always been more than happy to completely devour a
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: corpse and leave nothing behind but bones. Right, But when
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: they go down and they see this new mound, they
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: pull the vines off and they see they see Jeff's
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: still partially intact, but he's clearly been dead and the
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: vines have already begun devouring him. But they they had
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: taken their time with him, almost like they wanted him
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: to see that No, almost like they wanted the others
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: to find him ew yep. So, realizing that there's it's
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: just three of them, they go back up the hill.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: The thing is, while Stacian Matthias were down the hill,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: Eric gave into his psychosis, grabbed the knife, and he
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: had begun cutting into himself, thinking that there was a
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: vine in him. And the funny thing is is that
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: when he starts cutting into himself, he does find a
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: couple of vines, but he realizes that the parts of
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: his body that he thought had a vine growing in
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: him there wasn't actually a vine. So he basically ends
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: up flaying him almost like flaying into himself, cutting pieces
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: of himself out and not actually finding any vines growing
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: in him. And he was still alive when they came
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: up the hill, but he was like almost like this
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: like skeletal figure when they came up. He was cute.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: He was He didn't like cut like go like that
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: hard into him. He just cut pieces of his flesh out.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: But he's still he was a mess. And Matthias, Yeah,
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: Matthias tries to take the knife from him, but Jeff
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: reacts and ends up plunging the knife into Matthias's chest
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: and and that's how Matthias dies. Eric, now having lost
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: a lot of blood, ends up collapsing and Stacy stays
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: with him and at like as he's bleeding out, he
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: looks up at her and he begs her to kill him,
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: and Stacy is like in total shock, not knowing what
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: to do. So eventually like he gets her like key
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: convinces her to grab the knife and she does end
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: up plunging it into his chest, killing him. So now
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: it's just Stacy. Stacy remembering what Jeff had done. She's
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: like completely lost hope. There's no chance that she's gonna
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: make it out. She goes down to the bottom of
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: the hill. She has a knife with her. She sits
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: there at the base of the hill. The Mayans are
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: watching her, and she takes the knife and she cuts. Okay,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: before I go any further disclaimer trigger warning, Yeah I
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: should have said that about Eric, but like, yeah, I
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: think what was different. It was still self harm, but
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: it wasn't like for the purpose of taking his life.
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: It was born out of like this paranoid delusion, that
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: delusion that he's being devoured from the inside out by
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: the vines. Right in this case, this is like straight
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: up self harm and suicide. So unpaused, Stacy completely losing
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: hope that they're ever going to be found. She sits
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: at the base of the hill. She's thinking. She her
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: last thoughts is she's thinking of how Jeff and the
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: people before them had tried to leave a warning for others.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: They she thinks maybe she can somehow leave a warning,
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: and she does that by cutting into her arms. Basically
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: the down the road to success.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: No, she ends up.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: Bleeding out, but before she fully dies, the vines do
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: grab her and pull her into the thicket and envelope her.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: And unfortunately that's guys, but they leave. The vines aren't
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: gonna leave, like let her like leave like that, Oh dinner.
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: After that, the viands start packing up because like when
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: she went down the hill, she notices the mines are
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: already starting to pack up because like they know that,
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: they already know that, like it's just it was just
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: we're done, our work is done here. So all five
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: of them are gone.
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: Mm hmmm.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: And it's not a day later, it's only like I think,
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: like three days later is when the Greeks show up.
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: And the Greek said, made friends with more people.
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: Oh my god, being good today.
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: They followed the map that Pablo had left for them.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: They find the path easily because since the mines had
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: since it just had the rainstorm, the Mians had just
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: come up and down the path, they could easily see like,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: oh hey, there's the path, and they go down it.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: And the thing is, the mines had posted one of
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: their children to watch the path, steeping eye on the
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: path for now, and she sees them and immediately runs
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: to the runs to get them, runs to warn of
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: the village. By the time the rest of the villagers
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: show up at the mountain, the Mayans like foolishly had
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: our not the mines, the Greeks and their new group
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: had their new posse had already gone up the hill.
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: And now that's where the book ends. Now in the movie,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: though Jeff made it to the very end, and so
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: I had Stacy. The thing is, though, like Jeff did
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: something clever to distract the does something clever in the
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: movie to distract the Miyans. And once the minds were distracted,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: like Amy no sorry Stacy who had been playing dead,
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: did she he carried her down. He carried her body
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: down the pyramid and places her on the ground, and
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: he leads the minds away from her corpse. And once
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: they're distracted, she gets up and runs out. So she survives.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: And there was still like a there was like a
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: jeep there from like the archaeologic archaeologist. The the archaeologist
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: had left behind, and she managed to like she had
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: the key and she managed to start it and escape.
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: And then a couple of days later, the Pablo's friends
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: showed up, so someone does this. In the movie, someone
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: manages to escape, but in the book no one escapes.
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: So that is where the Ruins ends. Now, I will
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: say the Ruins did tickle a bit of did tickle
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: an itch because like I personally, I love I love monsters.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: I love creature features, like anything with like a unique
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: and unusual creature, Like I love those kind of stories
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: like like as you can tell.
- 1:08:24Speaker 2: Well, speaking of which, Frankenstein comes out today.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, that's right, that's right. I'mna be watching
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: it later with Alex.
- 1:08:31Speaker 8: But yeah, but I love monster features. I literally bought
- 1:08:39Speaker 8: a book. But where is it?
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: There is Kaiju Preservation Society. I love monsters. I love
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: movie monsters.
- 1:08:49Speaker 9: I love like weird crazy monsters, all right, love it
- 1:08:54Speaker 9: and the Ruins it it definitely tickled that itch, that
- 1:08:59Speaker 9: craving that I have or like unique monsters.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: And while it's a plant, it's still that it's still
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: a unique creature, all right. And I want to say,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: like the thing about the plants that the vines is
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: that it's it becomes very clear to the group how
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: dangerous these vines are, not just because they they're gonna
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: straight up eat them. But because they also realize that
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: these vines, there's a reason why the Mayans are not
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: allowing anybody to leave. If anybody gets on the hill
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: and touches the vines, no one is going to leave.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: And that's because of the way the vines proliferate, the
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: way they reproduce. Okay, they reproduce by some sort of
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: pollen or spore, so's they're not sea based plants. They
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: are like they're kind of like a fungus which reproduces
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: by like spores. Now, funny thing is probably enough the
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: spores they don't have like a natural pollinator, so there's
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: no bugs or insects or even birds or the animals
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: that carry them. Because the groups their ever approaches the hill,
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: there are no bugs, the skills poller. There's no bird.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: The fact that Jeff, but when you throw the rock
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: into the think of the immediately like kind of snap
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: together around the rock. And he realizes that that's why.
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: Because anything that is stupid enough to let on the
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: hill the vines up, and anything that has her botty
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: actually notes stay, something's happened. I'm polinary to carry. There's
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: four so other places quarantine all this sil all right,
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: but every time since they have they've touched the mines,
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: they brushed them, against them, the source on them, and
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: throughout the book noticing those are the mines are growing
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: on their clothes like full on a spring, like a
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: whole like six for their clothes. They haven't seen a
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: little fuzz begin to here and it's ea through their clothes.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: It's like me and practically wearing table. But the vine
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: cutting the material they're closes, causing into one of the
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: girls are just taste ain't now.
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: In the movie gets away, so do the spores.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: Mm hmm, so do the sport so unfortunly never asked sequel,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: there's no there's no sequels this book. There is another book, Invice,
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: but it's it's a totally different story. Uh yeah, both
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: of them are make lease. I mean this plan into later.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: But the Ruins was the one that caught my attention,
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: and I've had this on my shelf for so I
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: finally got around reading and there's but actually like like
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: there's I was reading, like my immediate to be read
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: list is like the War of the World's. I'm in
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: the process of reading the last book, the newest book
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: in the Dungeon Crawlers series. Uh should I already forgot it?
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: This Inevitable Ruin. And then I also got one of
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: the book up here. It's called The Warded Man from
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: the demon Cycle series, and oh I forgot. I also
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: have the spell Shop, so I have books. I have
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: a lot of books to read. The Ruins was one
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: of them that I've been wanting to read for ages. Uh,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: finally read it. Uh, not gonna lie. I was someone
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: I was a little disappointed with it because I was
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: hoping there'd be more of a lore and maybe possibly
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: like more to this story, like like I thought, I
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: was kind of hoping that maybe Stacey did survive and
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: that led into like a sequel where the plants get
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: out of control and cause like another problem or you know,
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: it goes from from the perspective of the new group
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: that gets trapped on the hill. But it's a standalone novel.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: I think it is worth the read. Though, if you're
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: though in this case, you're there's no real there's no
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: real major difference between the book and the movie. If
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: you want a cheesy movie from the two thousands, like
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: a cheesy horror movie from the two thousands, you want
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: to watch that it for what it is, for the
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: budget that it was made on, it was actually pretty good. Yeah,
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: definitely watched. Definitely consider watching The Ruins. It's definitely it's
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: I think it would be considered a classic horror movie now.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: I mean it's almost it's actually almost twenty years old.
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: Now, it's crazy, I know, right old.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: Or vintage. I'm such a dick. Wednesday I went out
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: to my I went out with my brother for his
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: birthday and we went to Texas Roadhouse. Thing is, he
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: was not the only birthday boy there. There were other
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: people there celebrating their birthday and things. We didn't tell
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: the weight staff that it's his birthday, but the other
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: people did so the way. So, like right next to
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: our table, this other girl was also having her birthday dinner,
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: and the staff went up and did the whole you know,
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: like you know, half the birthday kind of deal, like
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: let's give him a Texas Yeah, yeah, let's congratulate hers.
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: This is her twenty fifth birthday. And when everyone in
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: the restaurants yelled congratulations, I almost went congratulations your vintage now,
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: but I didn't. I had more restraint.
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: I mean, that explains a lot. I'm sure Alice looks
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: like the type that likes vintage. He's vintage too, but
- 1:14:58Speaker 2: he's not as vnted as you. I'm Mint, Okay, Mint,
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: You're turning thirty one in a couple of weeks, you
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: old grandpa.
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: Yeah, and I still have my elbow.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: I lost that in my twenties. It was a rough year.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: God damn. Late twenties are rough, y'all.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: Mm hmm It's okay there, misties.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: I'm turning thirty four next. I'm only missing my mids.
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: You were twenty.
- 1:15:29Speaker 4: You were twenty eight when I met you. No wait, wait,
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: we've got in like twenty eighteen.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: Oh shit, Yeah, you're right. I was the ripe age
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: of twenty eight. I was young and youthful. Brother, ew brother,
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: h brother, thats is like, what twenty four twenty five?
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it's let me see the twenty eight twenty four.
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: I was turning twenty five.
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: When your prime.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Prime where.
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: You're in your prime?
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: Yeah? But anyway, guys, that okay, that was the ruins.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: If you want to read it, If you want to
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: read it, pick up a book. You'll most likely find
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: it at your local library. You'll probably you'll probably find
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: it on any platform, iTunes, Kindle, and of course you
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: can you can stream it online. I think it's on
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: h I think it's on Paramount.
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: That makes sense because I did release it.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: Yeah, so you probably you can stream it on Paramount. Uh,
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: definitely recommend. I'd say this was like a three and
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: a half out of five. I'll give it three and
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: a half out of five stars. It's still a good
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: it was still a good book. But you know, it
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: wasn't really what I was hoping for. I wanted more
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: from the book, but I pretty much got like the same,
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: if just only a little bit more than what the
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: movie gave you. Yeah, So if you want to if
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: you're not really feeling like reading it, in this case,
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: I would say, just watch the movie.
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: Watch the room.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: Yeah, just watch the movie. I mean the CGI. I
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: won't say it's terrible, but it wasn't great.
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: He's talking about m all right, Well, thank you all
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: for listening today's episode. Catch you all next time as
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: I talk about something, because I'm gonna talk about something
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: something related until then, by y'all need
