- 0:00Speaker 1: And well hundreds turned out to SkyCity overnight. Oh sorry,
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Mindle Beach Casino and Resort, I should say, goodness me,
- 0:08Speaker 1: that's buddy wrong of me to get the name wrong
- 0:10Speaker 1: Mindle Beach Casino Resort overnight for the Hospitality Awards. And
- 0:16Speaker 1: it was a fantastic evening, so wonderful to see so
- 0:19Speaker 1: many of our venues recognized and also the wonderful workers
- 0:23Speaker 1: that are at those venues. I know that it's been
- 0:25Speaker 1: a tough tough year, certainly when you look at the
- 0:28Speaker 1: workforce shortage around the place, but more than four hundred
- 0:31Speaker 1: and fifty people were there overnight for the Hospitality into
- 0:35Speaker 1: Awards for excellence. And joining me on the line right
- 0:39Speaker 1: now is one of the winners. It is Tim Carter,
- 0:43Speaker 1: who won the winner of the Best Wayside in from
- 0:46Speaker 1: the Daily Waters Wayside In. Good morning to you, Tim, Yeah,
- 0:53Speaker 1: I'm very well. Did you have a big night, Tim?
- 0:56Speaker 1: After the big win?
- 0:58Speaker 2: I we got notification because we actually couldn't get up
- 1:03Speaker 2: here from the pub where oh it's our busiest time,
- 1:07Speaker 2: but we didn't get it. Once about picked up the award,
- 1:12Speaker 2: which was a bit a bit of a speech for him,
- 1:14Speaker 2: and yeah, look it was great. I mean and it
- 1:17Speaker 2: it all gets back to the start, you know.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, And Tim, you must have been happy to
- 1:25Speaker 1: hear that the Daily Water's Waysideing was recognized. What makes
- 1:30Speaker 1: you guys different out there at the Daily Water's Wayside in.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Yeah, we took over a look at it's always been
- 1:37Speaker 2: a bit of an icon, right, Yeah, we've probably taken
- 1:41Speaker 2: it to the next level where we get a lot
- 1:43Speaker 2: of people staying rather than just one night. Now we've spent, well,
- 1:48Speaker 2: not spent as the word invested, Yeah, a lot of
- 1:52Speaker 2: a lot of money. We only had fourteen rooms when
- 1:55Speaker 2: we took over five years ago, and I think we've
- 1:58Speaker 2: got sixty six now.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Awesome. That's a massive that's massive growth.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Look we've we haven't stopped building in five years.
- 2:09Speaker 2: And yeah, and the same with the caravan Perk. We've
- 2:13Speaker 2: gone over a hundred sites now and you know it's there,
- 2:18Speaker 2: but it's our home, that's the sleept. It's not just
- 2:22Speaker 2: a pub, it's not just something that's our home.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Yeah, and and what's it you know, what's it like
- 2:28Speaker 1: then when you don't win an award like you did
- 2:31Speaker 1: last night. I know you weren't there for it, but
- 2:33Speaker 1: what is it like when you when you find out
- 2:35Speaker 1: that that hard work has been recognized at that level
- 2:39Speaker 1: where well you've obviously won an award for excellence.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Yeah, look, a pub may be today, but we'll get
- 2:48Speaker 2: together with the staff and get a photo shot and
- 2:51Speaker 2: get everything and they'll have a few beverages and you know,
- 2:55Speaker 2: just just just you know, suck it all in.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely. Now what's it been like at Daily Waters
- 3:04Speaker 1: as well? When you talk about about attracting staff retaining staff.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I know that it's been a tough battle for a
- 3:11Speaker 1: lot of businesses around the Northern Territory of late.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Yeah. Look, and I don't want people to think I'm
- 3:18Speaker 2: a big head or whatever, but we don't actually have
- 3:22Speaker 2: too much trouble because a lot of our staff have
- 3:25Speaker 2: come from our aunties, uncles that have worked ten years ago,
- 3:29Speaker 2: fifteen years ago. But one thing we have got this year,
- 3:32Speaker 2: you know, we employ probably about what we'll be forty
- 3:36Speaker 2: forty two, forty three backpackers and whatever, and then we
- 3:42Speaker 2: have about seven in the kitchen. So we're going to
- 3:44Speaker 2: staff this of nearly fifty people, and we do get
- 3:49Speaker 2: a lot of vacancy and a lot of people in
- 3:52Speaker 2: court all the time, but one thing is we've given
- 3:54Speaker 2: them good accombination with good food and a couple of
- 3:59Speaker 2: women poor you know, as how you want to be treated.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, Tim, you said you said at the start
- 4:06Speaker 1: of the interview that the Daily Waters wayside in is
- 4:09Speaker 1: a bit of an icon. What makes it an icon?
- 4:13Speaker 2: I think I think it's Look, it's always been an icon.
- 4:18Speaker 2: We we bought it five years ago. And but what
- 4:21Speaker 2: we've done, what we've done, and I can only talk
- 4:24Speaker 2: of what we have we're What I'm saying.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Is we seem to have lost you there, Tim, Hopefully
- 4:34Speaker 1: we've got you again.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Okay. So what I was saying is because we've added
- 4:40Speaker 2: so much to the place, everyone can stay now where
- 4:43Speaker 2: before a lot of people used to get turned away. Yeah.
- 4:47Speaker 2: But as an icon, right, I mean I've got animals
- 4:53Speaker 2: now that just wander the streets and crocodiles and buffalo
- 4:58Speaker 2: so people get a bit of that tire feeling. Yeah
- 5:02Speaker 2: to them. You know, I love it.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Well, I think it's absolutely fabulous. A big congratulations to
- 5:08Speaker 1: you and the team out of The Daily Water's Waysideing

- 5:21Speaker 1: big congratulations to you and your team, Tim okay.

- 5:28Speaker 2: behalf of the Daily waters Cub. Yeah, get out of
- 5:31Speaker 2: you and have a look and you'll be presently surprised.
- 5:34Speaker 2: We've got a beautiful little junk yard here that blows
- 5:37Speaker 2: people away when they come and see it. All right, Oh,
- 5:39Speaker 2: good on you.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Thanks so much for having a chat this morning, Tim oh,
