Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Tex Edwards: Monopoly Watch spokesperson on Z Energy expanding their grocery offering
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Shedding eggs from the petrol station might be the new
- 0:02Speaker 1: normal of z energy gets its way. They're planning to
- 0:05Speaker 1: roll out grocery offerings to all of their two hundred
- 0:08Speaker 1: petrol stations around the country. They say this isn't to
- 0:11Speaker 1: compete with the big supermarket chains, but instead just top
- 0:14Speaker 1: up what they've already got available. Text Edwards is monopoly
- 0:17Speaker 1: watched spokesperson with us this morning.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Text, good morning, Good morning, Ryan.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Do you think this is a smart move from them?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Because I think about my dairy and dairies all around
- 0:27Speaker 1: New Zealand where you know you've got parking problems now
- 0:30Speaker 1: because of cycle. There a whole bunch of reasons why
- 0:33Speaker 1: dairies aren't as hot as they used to be. This
- 0:35Speaker 1: might be a good solution if you just want a
- 0:38Speaker 1: couple of things to pick up.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I don't think it's a real significant move, Ryan. The
- 0:47Speaker 2: problem with that is at the supermarket competition economics review,
- 0:54Speaker 2: the dynamic of their monopoly and supermarkets is you need
- 0:57Speaker 2: what we call like for light competition. So to have
- 1:01Speaker 2: any impact on price, sustainability or nutrition competition, you need
- 1:07Speaker 2: like to light shops. This looks like a desperate a
- 1:10Speaker 2: tent by the supermarket operators and by the fuel industry
- 1:15Speaker 2: to pretend that the wholesale regime worked. Ironically, the fuel
- 1:19Speaker 2: industry had the same competition problem and it had a
- 1:23Speaker 2: market to study actually before supermarkets, and they had the
- 1:29Speaker 2: Fuel Industry Act of twenty twenty. So sure, it might
- 1:34Speaker 2: be a great place to buy some eggs and some bread,
- 1:37Speaker 2: but it's not going to solve the big clanger and
- 1:41Speaker 2: the economy called competition in the supermarket.
- 1:44Speaker 1: But to be fair, they're not saying it is either
- 1:45Speaker 1: they're just saying or we sell a bunch of stuff
- 1:47Speaker 1: at the moment, we'll sell a bunch of more stuff,
- 1:49Speaker 1: maybe some fresher projects.
- 1:52Speaker 2: It makes makes makes perfect sense because if we think
- 1:55Speaker 2: about it in twenty years time, the fuel that the
- 1:59Speaker 2: fuel distributors are going to have a problem as people
- 2:02Speaker 2: swap into electric cars, so then they're not have so
- 2:05Speaker 2: much traffic through But actually, if you do a deeper
- 2:08Speaker 2: dive into the announcement, a lot of it is about
- 2:11Speaker 2: the fuel industry trying to be goody two shoes with
- 2:14Speaker 2: the Commers Commission and pretend that their wholesale regime is working,
- 2:19Speaker 2: and that the wholesale regime that was suggested might work
- 2:24Speaker 2: in supermarkets could also work, but this just isn't the
- 2:28Speaker 2: case because the industries are quite different, and it's quite
- 2:31Speaker 2: a dangerous move to have the fuel industry if you're
- 2:35Speaker 2: an industry analyst, and this is a boten response, right,
- 2:38Speaker 2: so apologize for doing it so early in the warning.
- 2:40Speaker 2: But if you're the fuel industry, you're trying to persuade
- 2:45Speaker 2: the regulators that isn't a competition problem in fuel industry
- 2:50Speaker 2: because they have a wholesale regime where you have to.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Have Yeah, but what's they do with selling eggs?
- 2:57Speaker 2: Oh, what it's got to do with selling eggs is
- 2:59Speaker 2: that they think it's a solution that's that's similar to it, that.
- 3:04Speaker 1: That use like a long bow. Text, are you doing long.
- 3:13Speaker 2: It is a long boat for first thing in the morning, Ryan.
- 3:14Speaker 2: But what we bt the industry structures trying to do
- 3:17Speaker 2: is say, hey, we could have the wholesale regime similar
- 3:22Speaker 2: to what we had in the fuel industry, and now
- 3:25Speaker 2: we don't need to break up the supermarkets because we're
- 3:26Speaker 2: going to do just what the fuel industry did.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I don't know, Text. I think a long bow not
- 3:31Speaker 1: just for Wednesday morning, but just a long bow is
- 3:33Speaker 1: a long Bow, but I appreciate you coming on the show.
