- 0:08Hey everyone,
- 0:08I'm Megan
- 0:09with the Eye
- 0:09Believe
- 0:09Podcast. Hi.
- 0:11And my name
- 0:12is Vytautel
- 0:13I am, a guest
- 0:14on today's
- 0:15episode.
- 0:16I am an
- 0:17Ayurvedic
- 0:17health
- 0:18counselor.
- 0:18And today
- 0:19we're
- 0:19going to
- 0:19talk about
- 0:20the role
- 0:21of sleep
- 0:22when our body
- 0:24is in
- 0:24healing
- 0:25and repair.
- 0:27Thank you
- 0:27so much
- 0:28for
- 0:28being here.
- 0:28I am so excited
- 0:29for
- 0:29this topic
- 0:30because
- 0:30I feel
- 0:30like sleep
- 0:31and rest
- 0:31is something
- 0:32that we don't
- 0:33let ourselves
- 0:34do because
- 0:35we feel like,
- 0:35you know,
- 0:36we're
- 0:36being lazy
- 0:36or we don't
- 0:37deserve it
- 0:37or,
- 0:38you know,
- 0:38it's
- 0:38not productive.
- 0:39So
- 0:39I love this
- 0:40topic
- 0:40and I'm
- 0:40so happy
- 0:41you're here
- 0:41to help us
- 0:42with this.
- 0:42I'm very
- 0:43excited
- 0:43to be here
- 0:44as well.
- 0:45And, it's
- 0:46it's
- 0:46one of my
- 0:46favorite
- 0:47topics
- 0:47to talk to
- 0:48people about
- 0:49because
- 0:49indeed,
- 0:50as you say,
- 0:51sometimes
- 0:52sleep
- 0:52feels
- 0:52so basic
- 0:53that
- 0:54it doesn't
- 0:54get
- 0:55the attention
- 0:56that it
- 0:56deserves.
- 0:57especially
- 0:57when we are
- 0:58in the
- 0:59process
- 0:59of, recovery.
- 1:01so I'm
- 1:01really happy
- 1:01that today
- 1:02we're
- 1:02shining the
- 1:03light
- 1:03on that.
- 1:05Absolutely.
- 1:06So tell
- 1:06me, what
- 1:07is Ayurveda?
- 1:08Because
- 1:08I've never
- 1:09heard of this
- 1:09until we
- 1:10spoke.
- 1:10Ayurveda is
- 1:12some of
- 1:12your
- 1:12listeners
- 1:13might be
- 1:13familiar
- 1:14with yoga
- 1:15already.
- 1:15yoga
- 1:16and Ayurveda
- 1:17are actually
- 1:17sister
- 1:18sciences,
- 1:19so
- 1:19I read
- 1:20that
- 1:20originated,
- 1:21about
- 1:22people say
- 1:23about 5000
- 1:24years ago.
- 1:25in what
- 1:26is, India
- 1:27in,
- 1:27in that area.
- 1:28And it is
- 1:29literally
- 1:30translated as
- 1:32the
- 1:32knowledge,
- 1:33the science of life.
- 1:34So
- 1:34where does
- 1:35yoga helps
- 1:36us, you know,
- 1:37calm down
- 1:38the noise
- 1:38in our minds
- 1:39so we can
- 1:40feel more
- 1:41peaceful.
- 1:42What are you
- 1:42Ayurveda
- 1:43does.
- 1:43It's sister
- 1:44science.
- 1:44It's like the
- 1:45medicinal
- 1:45system.
- 1:46So Ayurveda
- 1:47helps us
- 1:48get to know
- 1:49our body,
- 1:50and helps us
- 1:51take care
- 1:51of our bodies
- 1:52so that
- 1:53it can be
- 1:54as healthy
- 1:55as possible
- 1:55for as long
- 1:56as possible.
- 1:57So this is,
- 1:58what
- 1:58Ayurveda does
- 1:59And that's
- 2:00why I love it
- 2:00so much to.
- 2:03That so
- 2:03fascinating.
- 2:04So how
- 2:04did you get into
- 2:06it?
- 2:06How
- 2:06do you find
- 2:07it?
- 2:07I came
- 2:08across,
- 2:09Ayurveda
- 2:10came into
- 2:10my life,
- 2:11back in 2018,
- 2:13I had just
- 2:13had my
- 2:14second baby,
- 2:15and I
- 2:15was, going
- 2:16through some
- 2:17health
- 2:18challenges,
- 2:19and personal
- 2:19challenges,
- 2:20myself.
- 2:21And then
- 2:22I
- 2:22discovered it
- 2:23through
- 2:23a podcast,
- 2:24actually
- 2:25with a
- 2:25podcast that
- 2:26I still
- 2:26listen
- 2:27to today,
- 2:27and I
- 2:29kind of
- 2:29binged
- 2:30listened to
- 2:32all the
- 2:32episodes
- 2:33I could find
- 2:33because
- 2:34suddenly
- 2:34something
- 2:35clicked,
- 2:36because
- 2:36it was like
- 2:38it was
- 2:38making so
- 2:39much sense
- 2:40to me.
- 2:40You know,
- 2:41a lot of
- 2:41Ayurveda
- 2:42is about
- 2:42living
- 2:43in accordance
- 2:44with the
- 2:45laws
- 2:45of nature,
- 2:46which we
- 2:47kind of,
- 2:48over time,
- 2:49become
- 2:49disconnected
- 2:50from.
- 2:51And so
- 2:51I found
- 2:52that
- 2:53connection
- 2:53there
- 2:54that I think
- 2:54I was
- 2:55lacking and,
- 2:56and
- 2:57unconsciously
- 2:57seeking.
- 2:58So,
- 2:59right after
- 3:00I came across
- 3:01that podcast,
- 3:02I dove
- 3:03straight
- 3:03into Ayurveda
- 3:04studies
- 3:05and back then
- 3:06I was working
- 3:08in the field
- 3:08of European
- 3:09politics.
- 3:09So something
- 3:10really
- 3:11completely
- 3:11different.
- 3:12And several
- 3:13years
- 3:13of studying,
- 3:14two years ago
- 3:15I managed
- 3:15to make
- 3:16a complete
- 3:17career
- 3:18U-turn.
- 3:18And so
- 3:19now I
- 3:19am working
- 3:20with people,
- 3:21as an
- 3:22Ayurvedic
- 3:22health
- 3:22counselor,
- 3:23which is,
- 3:24so joyous
- 3:25for me.
- 3:25Oh, I
- 3:26bet that's
- 3:26so great.
- 3:27When you can
- 3:28make a career
- 3:29out of
- 3:29something
- 3:29that you're
- 3:29passionate
- 3:30about
- 3:30and you love.
- 3:31I mean,
- 3:31that's so
- 3:32rare and
- 3:33special.
- 3:33And, I mean,
- 3:34I wish
- 3:34everybody
- 3:35could have
- 3:35that.
- 3:35Yeah,
- 3:36it's it's
- 3:37very special
- 3:38if, if,
- 3:39you know,
- 3:40once you find
- 3:41that spark,
- 3:42then you
- 3:43should really
- 3:43follow it.
- 3:44Because
- 3:45if you do,
- 3:46even if it's
- 3:47challenging
- 3:48in many
- 3:48ways and it,
- 3:49it means
- 3:50that you have
- 3:50to make many
- 3:51very
- 3:52uncomfortable
- 3:53decisions
- 3:54in your life
- 3:55which,
- 3:55which can be,
- 3:56you know,
- 3:57scary and,
- 3:58but is just
- 3:59really,
- 3:59really
- 3:59worth it.
- 4:00It's scary
- 4:00to try
- 4:01anything new,
- 4:01especially
- 4:02when it's
- 4:02not a known
- 4:03quantity
- 4:03of like, oh,
- 4:04I will do this,
- 4:05and this is
- 4:05the outcome
- 4:06when you
- 4:06just jump in.
- 4:07But
- 4:08that's how
- 4:08I feel like
- 4:09we find
- 4:09the greatest
- 4:10things
- 4:11that are
- 4:11the most
- 4:11rewarding
- 4:12is by
- 4:12just taking
- 4:12that leap
- 4:13of faith
- 4:13and going
- 4:14for it.
- 4:15So I'm
- 4:15excited that
- 4:16it worked
- 4:17out.
- 4:17And you're
- 4:17here to talk
- 4:18to us today.
- 4:19So today
- 4:19we're talking
- 4:20about the
- 4:20role of sleep
- 4:21in the
- 4:22process of
- 4:22healing,
- 4:23and why
- 4:23you should
- 4:24focus
- 4:24on sleep
- 4:25while you're
- 4:25dealing with
- 4:26any diagnosis
- 4:27but ocular
- 4:27melanoma
- 4:28specifically.
- 4:29So tell us
- 4:30about that.
- 4:30in Ayurveda
- 4:31we're working
- 4:32a lot with,
- 4:34with a
- 4:34person's
- 4:35lifestyle.
- 4:36So we are
- 4:37looking at
- 4:38how they
- 4:39are living
- 4:41their life,
- 4:41what they're
- 4:42doing
- 4:43every
- 4:43single day,
- 4:44what they're
- 4:45eating every
- 4:45single day,
- 4:46how they're
- 4:47sleeping
- 4:47every
- 4:48single day,
- 4:48and how
- 4:49they're
- 4:49spending
- 4:50the energy
- 4:51that they get
- 4:52from sleep
- 4:52and from
- 4:53food, in
- 4:54what ways
- 4:54they're
- 4:55spending it
- 4:55and spending
- 4:56too little,
- 4:57are they
- 4:57spending
- 4:57too much,
- 4:58and so on.
- 4:59So sleep
- 5:00is,
- 5:01one of
- 5:01the main
- 5:03pillars
- 5:03of health
- 5:04and wellness
- 5:05in Ayurveda
- 5:07So it's the
- 5:08pillar
- 5:08of health
- 5:09that
- 5:09everything
- 5:10else kind of
- 5:11stands on.
- 5:12so that's
- 5:13why, when
- 5:14I start
- 5:15working
- 5:15with someone
- 5:16that is going
- 5:17to be
- 5:18one of the
- 5:18first pieces
- 5:20that we're
- 5:20going to
- 5:20look
- 5:21at together,
- 5:22how is that
- 5:22person
- 5:23sleeping?
- 5:23And
- 5:24if they're
- 5:24not sleeping,
- 5:25even
- 5:26if they have
- 5:27whatever
- 5:27symptoms
- 5:28they might
- 5:28be
- 5:29experiencing,
- 5:30we will be
- 5:31circling back
- 5:32to the
- 5:33quality of
- 5:34their sleep.
- 5:34and in fact,
- 5:35now I think
- 5:36it's about
- 5:37like, it's
- 5:37thousands
- 5:38and
- 5:38thousands,
- 5:39I think
- 5:39like 17,000.
- 5:40studies
- 5:41have
- 5:42been, done
- 5:43on sleep
- 5:44in
- 5:44conventional medicine.
- 5:46So it is a
- 5:47subject of
- 5:47interest
- 5:48to science
- 5:49as well.
- 5:49And,
- 5:50they've
- 5:50discovered
- 5:51that it's
- 5:52the single
- 5:53most
- 5:53effective
- 5:54thing
- 5:55that we
- 5:56can do
- 5:56every day
- 5:57to reset
- 5:58our brain
- 5:59and
- 5:59our body's
- 5:59health.
- 6:00So this is
- 6:01really,
- 6:01an incredible
- 6:02thing to
- 6:03to think
- 6:03about
- 6:04and to
- 6:04integrate
- 6:05into our
- 6:05mindset
- 6:06for everyone,
- 6:07but
- 6:08especially
- 6:08if we're
- 6:09dealing with
- 6:10a health
- 6:10challenge
- 6:11because, if
- 6:12we're
- 6:12were told
- 6:13by science,
- 6:14they're able
- 6:14to measure
- 6:15that,
- 6:15you know,
- 6:16it's
- 6:16this thing,
- 6:16it's more
- 6:17important
- 6:18than eating.
- 6:18Right.
- 6:19if
- 6:19somebody is
- 6:20at a point
- 6:21in their life
- 6:21where
- 6:22they feel
- 6:22like
- 6:23their sleep
- 6:23is a mess,
- 6:24their diet
- 6:24is a mess,
- 6:25they have
- 6:26no energy,
- 6:27everything is
- 6:28going wrong.
- 6:28if they just
- 6:29focus on
- 6:30the sleep
- 6:31piece,
- 6:31that can
- 6:32really help
- 6:33to kind of
- 6:35get
- 6:35everything
- 6:36going,
- 6:37you know,
- 6:37in the upward
- 6:38spiral.
- 6:39Again.
- 6:39as we said,
- 6:40if
- 6:41something's
- 6:41so basic,
- 6:42but it's
- 6:43something
- 6:43that is
- 6:44incredibly
- 6:45powerful
- 6:46for everyone,
- 6:47you know.
- 6:47But
- 6:47especially
- 6:48if somebody
- 6:49is dealing
- 6:50with with
- 6:50a health
- 6:51challenge.
- 6:51Science Now
- 6:52says, that
- 6:53there isn't
- 6:54a single.
- 6:55biological
- 6:56function
- 6:57that doesn't
- 6:59benefit
- 6:59from good
- 7:00sleep. Right?
- 7:01So even
- 7:01if we're
- 7:02faced with a
- 7:03scary
- 7:04diagnosis
- 7:05and we are
- 7:06anxious
- 7:06about it,
- 7:07you know,
- 7:08thinking
- 7:08What
- 7:08is to be done
- 7:09by me?
- 7:10What can I do
- 7:11about it?
- 7:12You can start
- 7:13getting a
- 7:13good night's
- 7:14sleep.
- 7:14That is going
- 7:15to be,
- 7:16one of the
- 7:16best things
- 7:17that you
- 7:17can do
- 7:18for yourself
- 7:19and for your
- 7:20body's repair
- 7:21and healing.
- 7:22there is,
- 7:23a great
- 7:23book by,
- 7:25a PhD
- 7:26scientist,
- 7:26called
- 7:27Matthew
- 7:27Walker.
- 7:28It's called
- 7:28Why We Sleep.
- 7:29I really
- 7:30recommend it
- 7:30to anyone
- 7:31who has
- 7:33disturbed
- 7:33sleep.
- 7:34and who would
- 7:35like to
- 7:35explore
- 7:36this further,
- 7:37this is a
- 7:38really,
- 7:39really good
- 7:40resource.
- 7:40It's also
- 7:41written
- 7:42in a
- 7:42really user
- 7:43friendly way.
- 7:44So it has
- 7:45a lot of
- 7:45science
- 7:46in it,
- 7:47but it's
- 7:48it's
- 7:48digestible.
- 7:49that would be
- 7:50a really
- 7:50good place
- 7:51to start
- 7:51digging.
- 7:52If
- 7:53some of your
- 7:53readers are
- 7:54interested.
- 7:55Oh,
- 7:55I love that.
- 7:56Thank you.
- 7:56That's a
- 7:56that's
- 7:57a great
- 7:57resource.
- 7:58I always
- 7:58love a book
- 7:59on anything,
- 8:00but
- 8:00especially
- 8:00something
- 8:01that can
- 8:01actually
- 8:01be helpful
- 8:02to us.
- 8:02That's
- 8:03awesome.
- 8:03let's talk
- 8:04about
- 8:05the link
- 8:05between sleep
- 8:07and anxiety.
- 8:07How does that work?
- 8:08I haven't
- 8:09come across
- 8:10any modern
- 8:12science,
- 8:13examining
- 8:13the, the link
- 8:14between
- 8:14the two.
- 8:15I'm sure
- 8:15that exists.
- 8:16I'm positive
- 8:17there are,
- 8:17like, 17,000
- 8:18studies
- 8:19done on
- 8:19sleep.
- 8:19I'm sure
- 8:20some of them
- 8:20will be
- 8:21linked
- 8:21to anxiety.
- 8:22But from the
- 8:23Ayurveda
- 8:24perspective,
- 8:25when we're
- 8:25speaking
- 8:26about an
- 8:26Ayurveda
- 8:27perspective,
- 8:28this is a
- 8:28perspective
- 8:29that
- 8:29ancestors
- 8:30of humanity,
- 8:31thousands
- 8:32and
- 8:32thousands of
- 8:32years ago
- 8:33noticed
- 8:34what happens
- 8:35in a human
- 8:35body. Right.
- 8:36And
- 8:37what are the patterns
- 8:38that can be observed
- 8:39and
- 8:39what they observed.
- 8:41So this is
- 8:41written in
- 8:42Ayurveda text
- 8:43the more anxious
- 8:44a person
- 8:45will be,
- 8:45the more
- 8:46trouble
- 8:47their sleep
- 8:47is likely
- 8:48to be.
- 8:48So there's
- 8:49this link.
- 8:50between
- 8:51the more
- 8:51anxiety
- 8:51you will
- 8:52feel,
- 8:52probably
- 8:53the worst.
- 8:54You will
- 8:54sleep right
- 8:55and it goes
- 8:56the other way
- 8:56around.
- 8:56Makes sense
- 8:57if if you are
- 8:58somebody who,
- 9:00feels
- 9:00peaceful
- 9:01most of the time,
- 9:02you are
- 9:02more likely
- 9:03to have a
- 9:04good night's
- 9:05sleep.
- 9:05this is also,
- 9:06an
- 9:07interesting,
- 9:08link between
- 9:09the two
- 9:09for the
- 9:11listeners,
- 9:12because if
- 9:14you are
- 9:14at a point
- 9:15in your life
- 9:16where you're
- 9:16feeling
- 9:17very anxious,
- 9:18right,
- 9:19and you're
- 9:20finding that
- 9:21your sleep
- 9:22is very
- 9:23disturbed,
- 9:23you know,
- 9:24that you
- 9:24you only need
- 9:25to pick
- 9:25one thing.
- 9:26Like you
- 9:26can either
- 9:27focus on
- 9:28the anxiety
- 9:28piece
- 9:29or you can
- 9:30focus on
- 9:31this sleep
- 9:31piece.
- 9:32And as you
- 9:33work on
- 9:34the one,
- 9:35the other
- 9:35will
- 9:36improve to.
- 9:36So
- 9:37how can you
- 9:37work on it.
- 9:38Like what
- 9:38are some
- 9:39examples
- 9:40of things
- 9:40people can do
- 9:41in their
- 9:42lives to see,
- 9:43you know,
- 9:43say someone
- 9:43has
- 9:44a diagnosis
- 9:44and they are
- 9:45struggling
- 9:45with this
- 9:46easier said
- 9:47than done.
- 9:47What can
- 9:47they do?
- 9:50as general
- 9:51advice,
- 9:52right.
- 9:52Because
- 9:53Ayurveda is,
- 9:54it takes
- 9:55a
- 9:55personalized
- 9:56approach
- 9:56always.
- 9:57So we always
- 9:57look at
- 9:58a person,
- 9:58for example.
- 9:59what is going on
- 10:00in their life
- 10:01and
- 10:01in their body
- 10:02at this
- 10:02very moment.
- 10:03But
- 10:04as a general guideline,
- 10:07if someone
- 10:07is
- 10:08experiencing
- 10:09a lot of anxiety,
- 10:11the first thing
- 10:12that I
- 10:12would look
- 10:13at is
- 10:14how much
- 10:14caffeine
- 10:15are they
- 10:16also
- 10:16consuming?
- 10:17so that is
- 10:17probably one
- 10:19of the
- 10:19easiest, ways
- 10:20to bring
- 10:21the anxiety
- 10:22down,
- 10:22Because
- 10:23caffeine is a
- 10:24nervous
- 10:25system
- 10:25stimulant.
- 10:26So it's
- 10:27an anxiety
- 10:29is
- 10:29stimulation
- 10:30of of the
- 10:31mind, right.
- 10:31When we're
- 10:32anxious,
- 10:32our mind
- 10:33is stimulated
- 10:34because
- 10:34we're always
- 10:35projecting
- 10:35these
- 10:35scenarios.
- 10:36like a ping
- 10:37pong ball
- 10:38in your head.
- 10:38So in
- 10:39Ayurveda
- 10:40we look at
- 10:40qualities
- 10:41of what,
- 10:42what is happening
- 10:44in the body.
- 10:44So anxiety is
- 10:46a quality
- 10:46of movement
- 10:47of stimulated
- 10:48movement
- 10:49of thoughts.
- 10:50And so what
- 10:51other things
- 10:52in your life
- 10:53give you
- 10:54stimulation.
- 10:55What other
- 10:56other things
- 10:56are you
- 10:57consuming
- 10:58during
- 10:58the day,
- 10:59for example,
- 10:59that have the
- 11:00same effect.
- 11:01Because
- 11:02like attracts
- 11:03like.
- 11:03Yeah.
- 11:04And opposites
- 11:04create
- 11:05balance.
- 11:06This is like
- 11:06the law
- 11:07of nature
- 11:07in a way.
- 11:08caffeine
- 11:09is probably
- 11:09the first,
- 11:10where I would
- 11:10look.
- 11:11And it's
- 11:11incredible
- 11:12how many
- 11:13people
- 11:14consume
- 11:14way more
- 11:15caffeine than
- 11:16they are
- 11:16aware of.
- 11:17caffeine
- 11:18is not
- 11:18only in
- 11:19coffee,
- 11:20Caffeine is
- 11:21also in dark
- 11:22chocolate.
- 11:22Caffeine
- 11:23is also in,
- 11:25green tea,
- 11:25black tea,
- 11:26even decaf
- 11:28will
- 11:28have like
- 11:2930% caffeine,
- 11:30without being
- 11:31aware of it,
- 11:32it can really
- 11:33build up
- 11:34in our body.
- 11:35And then
- 11:35caffeine in
- 11:36an adult,
- 11:37person
- 11:38has a
- 11:38five hour
- 11:40half life.
- 11:41So it means
- 11:42to eliminate
- 11:42a caffeine
- 11:43that will
- 11:43be present
- 11:44in the coffee
- 11:45cup
- 11:45completely.
- 11:46We need
- 11:46ten hours.
- 11:47a cup
- 11:48of coffee
- 11:48in the
- 11:49afternoon,
- 11:49by the time
- 11:50we need to
- 11:51go to bed,
- 11:51There's
- 11:52still this
- 11:53stimulation
- 11:54of the
- 11:54nervous
- 11:55system
- 11:55that is,
- 11:56present in
- 11:57our body.
- 11:58There's
- 11:58still that
- 11:58stimulating
- 11:59effect.
- 12:00it's
- 12:00not about
- 12:01being guilty,
- 12:01though,
- 12:02some people
- 12:03handle
- 12:03caffeine
- 12:04better than
- 12:05others, It's
- 12:05usually
- 12:06people
- 12:06who have
- 12:07a bit
- 12:07more of,
- 12:08like,
- 12:08body mass.
- 12:09They're
- 12:09more stable.
- 12:10They have a larger
- 12:11frame.
- 12:12usually
- 12:12they will be
- 12:13less anxious.
- 12:15they will have,
- 12:15less of
- 12:16this anxiety,
- 12:16a tendency.
- 12:17for some
- 12:18people,
- 12:19caffeine
- 12:19can be
- 12:20a medicine.
- 12:22But that
- 12:23being said,
- 12:23if we're
- 12:24experiencing
- 12:25anxiety,
- 12:26that is
- 12:26probably
- 12:27what is
- 12:28firing it up
- 12:30even more.
- 12:31You know,
- 12:31not taking
- 12:32into account
- 12:33the outside,
- 12:33the
- 12:34circumstances,
- 12:34The second
- 12:35thing
- 12:36I would say,
- 12:37regardless of
- 12:38whether we're
- 12:39working
- 12:40with anxiety
- 12:41or with
- 12:42sleep,
- 12:42in both
- 12:43cases,
- 12:44having
- 12:44a regular
- 12:45schedule
- 12:46and a
- 12:46regular
- 12:46schedule
- 12:47for eating
- 12:48and sleeping
- 12:50is super
- 12:51helpful.
- 12:51when it comes
- 12:52to, sleep,
- 12:53health,
- 12:53but also
- 12:54it helps
- 12:55to bring down
- 12:56anxiety.
- 12:57in Ayurveda
- 12:58actually
- 12:58when we
- 12:59treat anxiety
- 13:00and poor
- 13:00sleep,
- 13:01the remedies
- 13:02are very,
- 13:02very similar
- 13:03because we're
- 13:04actually
- 13:04treating the
- 13:05same root
- 13:06cause,
- 13:06which is
- 13:07too much
- 13:08movement.
- 13:09The quality
- 13:10of movement.
- 13:11so ideally
- 13:13the bedtime
- 13:13would be
- 13:14£0.10 pm.
- 13:15for a
- 13:16good sleep
- 13:16hygiene,
- 13:17that is
- 13:18when our body
- 13:20if we're if
- 13:21we manage
- 13:21to sleep
- 13:23by 10 p.m.,
- 13:24then that is
- 13:26when our body
- 13:27can benefit
- 13:29from the
- 13:29most deep
- 13:30sleep cycles.
- 13:31Because we
- 13:32experience
- 13:32our body
- 13:33goes through,
- 13:34deep sleep
- 13:35and then REM
- 13:36sleep
- 13:36cycles and,
- 13:37and then it
- 13:38kind of like
- 13:39it's kind
- 13:39of this,
- 13:39like, wave
- 13:40like movement
- 13:41throughout
- 13:41the night.
- 13:42And we will
- 13:43see that,
- 13:43the first
- 13:44four hours
- 13:45of the night.
- 13:45So from
- 13:4610 p.m.
- 13:47to about
- 13:472 a.m.,
- 13:49that is
- 13:49when we have
- 13:50the highest
- 13:50concentration
- 13:51of deep
- 13:52sleep.
- 13:53Then
- 13:53afterwards
- 13:54the sleep,
- 13:55the second
- 13:55part of
- 13:55the night
- 13:56or sleep
- 13:56becomes
- 13:57lighter.
- 13:57So that's
- 13:58when we have
- 13:58more dreams,
- 13:59you know,
- 14:00other
- 14:00processes
- 14:01take place,
- 14:02but in it's
- 14:03in the deep
- 14:03sleep state
- 14:04that our body
- 14:06is best
- 14:07at repairing
- 14:08and
- 14:09regenerating.
- 14:10So that's
- 14:10incredibly
- 14:11important
- 14:11for anyone
- 14:12with health.
- 14:12It's it
- 14:13it's
- 14:13important
- 14:14for everyone.
- 14:14But
- 14:15especially
- 14:15if, we're
- 14:16dealing
- 14:17with, health
- 14:17challenges.
- 14:18that would be
- 14:19that would be
- 14:20the second
- 14:21piece
- 14:21that I
- 14:21would advise
- 14:22people.
- 14:23So checking
- 14:24how much
- 14:24coffee
- 14:24you're
- 14:24having for
- 14:25the day
- 14:26doesn't mean
- 14:27you know that
- 14:27you have to
- 14:28cut it
- 14:29all out.
- 14:29In fact,
- 14:30if somebody
- 14:31is, very used
- 14:33to having
- 14:33a lot
- 14:34of coffee,
- 14:34like
- 14:35three cups of
- 14:35coffee
- 14:36per day,
- 14:36and if they
- 14:37suddenly go
- 14:38off it,
- 14:39it can
- 14:39create,
- 14:40you know,
- 14:41withdrawal
- 14:41symptoms.
- 14:42It can create
- 14:43agitation,
- 14:44extra
- 14:44agitation
- 14:45in the body
- 14:45because
- 14:46that's a very
- 14:47sudden
- 14:47change.
- 14:48And any
- 14:48kind of
- 14:49sudden change
- 14:50can create
- 14:50agitation.
- 14:51So, you know,
- 14:52phasing it
- 14:53out.
- 14:53Maybe
- 14:54I was
- 14:54making like
- 14:55half a cup
- 14:56less,
- 14:57you know, or
- 14:58replacing it
- 14:59with an
- 15:00alternative,
- 15:00especially in
- 15:01the
- 15:01afternoon.
- 15:02And then
- 15:02gradually
- 15:03phasing it out
- 15:03and then
- 15:04looking at
- 15:05what time
- 15:06are you going
- 15:07to bed.
- 15:08Right.
- 15:08What is
- 15:09what is
- 15:10your evening
- 15:11routine?
- 15:11Are you
- 15:12allowing your
- 15:12nervous
- 15:13system
- 15:14to wind down?
- 15:15Because
- 15:16our nervous
- 15:16system
- 15:17also needs,
- 15:17like,
- 15:18a buffer,
- 15:19you know,
- 15:19to go
- 15:20from,
- 15:21from,
- 15:21like,
- 15:21high
- 15:22functioning
- 15:22working brain
- 15:24into a
- 15:24relaxed
- 15:25brain.
- 15:25it's not
- 15:26like a on and
- 15:27off switch.
- 15:28So we need to
- 15:29also foresee
- 15:30a couple
- 15:30of hours
- 15:31in the
- 15:31evening
- 15:32where
- 15:32we reduce
- 15:33our screen
- 15:34time right
- 15:35where we do
- 15:36something
- 15:37relaxing,
- 15:38whatever that
- 15:39that that
- 15:39can be
- 15:40different
- 15:40for everyone.
- 15:41You know,
- 15:42everyone
- 15:42will relate
- 15:43to different
- 15:43practices,
- 15:44but
- 15:44things like
- 15:45taking
- 15:46a bath,
- 15:46reading
- 15:47a book,
- 15:48you know,
- 15:48going for
- 15:49a walk,
- 15:50hopefully
- 15:50not doing
- 15:51some kind of
- 15:52intense
- 15:53activity.
- 15:53So either
- 15:54physical,
- 15:55intense
- 15:55workout
- 15:56right
- 15:56before bed
- 15:57or like
- 15:58anything
- 15:59that is
- 16:00intellectually
- 16:01intense or
- 16:03emotionally
- 16:04intense,
- 16:05you know,
- 16:05thinking of
- 16:06your evening
- 16:07like a couple
- 16:08of hours
- 16:08before
- 16:09your bedtime
- 16:11as like
- 16:12this
- 16:12buffer zone
- 16:13for your
- 16:13nervous
- 16:14system,
- 16:14And seeing
- 16:15what
- 16:15practices
- 16:15resonate
- 16:16with you?
- 16:17What do you enjoy
- 16:18doing that
- 16:18brings you
- 16:19the feeling
- 16:20of peace?
- 16:22definitely.
- 16:23Looking
- 16:23at, screen
- 16:24news
- 16:25in the evening
- 16:26because we,
- 16:26know already
- 16:27also that,
- 16:28there's
- 16:28studies
- 16:29that blue
- 16:30light
- 16:30exposure, to
- 16:31blue light
- 16:32it kind of
- 16:33messes up
- 16:33with our
- 16:34hormones,
- 16:35especially
- 16:36melatonin.
- 16:36there are
- 16:37ways that
- 16:37you can
- 16:38make
- 16:39your phone
- 16:39less
- 16:39attractive.
- 16:40There's a
- 16:41setting that
- 16:42makes it
- 16:42all dark
- 16:43and
- 16:44unattractive
- 16:45to look at
- 16:45in the
- 16:46evening.
- 16:47especially in
- 16:47the winter,
- 16:48now we use
- 16:49our lights
- 16:50less,
- 16:50the lights
- 16:51that you have
- 16:51in the house
- 16:52after dark,
- 16:53that they're
- 16:54nervous,
- 16:54system
- 16:54friendly.
- 16:55for people
- 16:56who, who
- 16:56really are
- 16:57struggling
- 16:58with
- 16:58insomnia,
- 16:59I would
- 16:59really
- 17:00recommend
- 17:00also
- 17:01looking like
- 17:02you can film
- 17:03your light
- 17:04with your phone
- 17:04through
- 17:05your camera
- 17:05and see
- 17:06in the recording
- 17:07if it
- 17:07flickers,
- 17:08sometimes
- 17:09we won't
- 17:09be able
- 17:10to notice
- 17:10that with
- 17:11a naked eye,
- 17:12but I
- 17:12was nervous.
- 17:13System
- 17:13notices it.
- 17:14So
- 17:14if you have
- 17:15flickering
- 17:15lights in
- 17:16your rooms,
- 17:17where
- 17:17you spend
- 17:18your
- 17:19evenings,
- 17:19you know,
- 17:20that's
- 17:20something
- 17:20you could
- 17:21look at.
- 17:21there are
- 17:22special
- 17:22light bulbs
- 17:23that you can,
- 17:23get as well
- 17:24that are
- 17:25more nervous,
- 17:26system
- 17:26friendly.
- 17:27So that's
- 17:28fascinating.
- 17:28So if
- 17:29you're light,
- 17:29if you look
- 17:30at your light
- 17:30through your phone
- 17:31and it
- 17:31flickers,
- 17:32what kind of
- 17:33lights are
- 17:34those?
- 17:34Are those
- 17:35like the
- 17:35kind of,
- 17:36like the new
- 17:36energy
- 17:37saving ones
- 17:37or they're
- 17:38probably
- 17:38the more
- 17:38likely ones
- 17:39to flicker.
- 17:40So
- 17:40fluorescent
- 17:41lights.
- 17:41I'm
- 17:42not an expert
- 17:43in lights.
- 17:44but
- 17:44definitely
- 17:45if
- 17:45they flicker,
- 17:46they will
- 17:47agitate our
- 17:48nervous
- 17:49system
- 17:49in a way
- 17:49that we can
- 17:50perceive.
- 17:50some people,
- 17:52it might be
- 17:52fine.
- 17:53like for
- 17:54people
- 17:54who in
- 17:54general are
- 17:55sensitive.
- 17:56So, you
- 17:57know, going
- 17:58through a lot
- 17:58of anxiety
- 17:59or not
- 18:00sleeping
- 18:00well,
- 18:01that is
- 18:01an additional,
- 18:02an
- 18:02additional thing
- 18:03that
- 18:03they could
- 18:04look at.
- 18:05I think
- 18:05it would be
- 18:05probably LED
- 18:06lights,
- 18:07but don't
- 18:07quote me
- 18:08on that.
- 18:08Yeah,
- 18:09that actually
- 18:09that makes
- 18:10a lot
- 18:10of sense.
- 18:11We can do
- 18:11a little
- 18:11research
- 18:12into that
- 18:12and maybe
- 18:12see if
- 18:13we can do
- 18:13like a
- 18:13follow up
- 18:14with,
- 18:14something
- 18:15on lights
- 18:15because
- 18:16I've never
- 18:16heard of this.
- 18:17So this to me
- 18:17is
- 18:17fascinating.
- 18:18This is definitely
- 18:19something
- 18:19that we
- 18:20could
- 18:20look into
- 18:20a little more
- 18:21there is,
- 18:21lamp shop,
- 18:22that
- 18:23I drive past
- 18:24every time
- 18:25I go,
- 18:26to my
- 18:26grocery
- 18:27store.
- 18:27when I drive
- 18:28by, there's
- 18:29a camera
- 18:29on my car.
- 18:30I can see,
- 18:31like,
- 18:32when
- 18:32I drive past,
- 18:33when I
- 18:34look at
- 18:34that shop
- 18:35through
- 18:36the camera,
- 18:37it's going in
- 18:38all
- 18:38directions.
- 18:39It's like,
- 18:40flickering,
- 18:41like crazy.
- 18:42And it's
- 18:43a room
- 18:43full of you
- 18:44know,
- 18:44pretty lamps.
- 18:45And so I'm
- 18:45thinking,
- 18:46like,
- 18:46for the
- 18:47people
- 18:47working
- 18:48there,
- 18:48I wonder, how
- 18:50they're
- 18:50sleeping.
- 18:50Oh, you just
- 18:51blew my mind.
- 18:51because
- 18:52that's
- 18:52happened
- 18:52before where
- 18:53I've taken
- 18:53a, you know,
- 18:54a video and.
- 18:55Yeah,
- 18:55you see
- 18:55the light
- 18:56bulbs
- 18:56flashing
- 18:57and you
- 18:57can't see it
- 18:57to the
- 18:58naked eye,
- 18:58but
- 18:58in a video
- 18:59you can
- 18:59that is
- 19:00really
- 19:00fascinating.
- 19:01I'm going
- 19:01to go like
- 19:02film on my
- 19:02light bulb.
- 19:03Now.
- 19:03starting with
- 19:04these three
- 19:05things,
- 19:05monitoring
- 19:06your caffeine
- 19:07intake,
- 19:08checking
- 19:08your bedtime
- 19:10and seeing
- 19:10how you're
- 19:11using your
- 19:11evening time.
- 19:12Are you
- 19:13using it
- 19:13to get more
- 19:14stuff done
- 19:15or are you
- 19:16is other
- 19:17things
- 19:17that you
- 19:18can do
- 19:18to help
- 19:19yourself
- 19:20wind down
- 19:21Then
- 19:21checking,
- 19:22your blue
- 19:22light
- 19:23exposure And,
- 19:24light
- 19:25bulb
- 19:25exposure.
- 19:26I mean,
- 19:27we have
- 19:27evolved, over
- 19:28millennia.
- 19:29we were living
- 19:30in tune
- 19:31with natural
- 19:31rhythms.
- 19:32And so
- 19:32what happens,
- 19:33what happens
- 19:34when the sun
- 19:35goes down
- 19:36our body
- 19:37technically
- 19:38should not
- 19:38be exposed
- 19:39to light
- 19:40when you.
- 19:41Bright light.
- 19:42that,
- 19:42in general
- 19:43helpful
- 19:44for our
- 19:44health,
- 19:45it's going to
- 19:45be helpful
- 19:46for sleep.
- 19:47it's going
- 19:48to be
- 19:48helpful
- 19:48overall
- 19:49because
- 19:49this is
- 19:50how our
- 19:50body's
- 19:51evolved.
- 19:51And the
- 19:51same goes
- 19:53for for
- 19:54digestion.
- 19:54Our digestion
- 19:55also follows
- 19:56the rhythm
- 19:57of the sun.
- 19:58We can digest
- 19:59the most.
- 20:00Our digestion
- 20:00is strongest
- 20:01at lunch
- 20:02when the sun
- 20:03is highest
- 20:04in the sky.
- 20:04if we consume
- 20:06the most
- 20:07of our food
- 20:08at lunch,
- 20:09that's when
- 20:09we digest
- 20:10food the
- 20:10most.
- 20:10And often
- 20:11what happens
- 20:11nowadays is
- 20:12that people
- 20:13would have
- 20:14lunch on
- 20:14the go,
- 20:15having
- 20:15a snack
- 20:16or something.
- 20:17And then have
- 20:18a big meal
- 20:19at dinner,
- 20:20which
- 20:20can also
- 20:21sometimes
- 20:22disrupt sleep
- 20:23because
- 20:23at dinner
- 20:24our digestion
- 20:26capacity
- 20:27goes down,
- 20:27just like
- 20:28the sun.
- 20:28that's
- 20:29another thing
- 20:29for sleep
- 20:30health.
- 20:30checking.
- 20:31When are you
- 20:31having
- 20:32dinner?
- 20:32Are you
- 20:33leaving?
- 20:33enough hours
- 20:35for maybe,
- 20:35leaving
- 20:36a good
- 20:36buffer of
- 20:363 hours
- 20:37before
- 20:38you're going
- 20:39to sleep.
- 20:39That for me.
- 20:40That's
- 20:40a big one.
- 20:41I tend to eat
- 20:42more of
- 20:43my food
- 20:43in the middle
- 20:44of the day.
- 20:44I don't
- 20:45eat dinner
- 20:45very often.
- 20:46and when I
- 20:46do eat dinner
- 20:48especially
- 20:48a later
- 20:48bigger
- 20:49dinner,
- 20:49I don't sleep
- 20:50near as well.
- 20:51But when I
- 20:51go to bed
- 20:52I'm more
- 20:52of an
- 20:52empty
- 20:53stomach.
- 20:53I always
- 20:54sleep so
- 20:54much better.
- 20:54So that is
- 20:55something
- 20:55that I
- 20:55try to do
- 20:56and I, as
- 20:57I can tell,
- 20:57a huge
- 20:58difference.
- 20:59Yeah, yeah.
- 20:59For me
- 21:00it's
- 21:00the same.
- 21:01And that's
- 21:02because
- 21:02our body so
- 21:04especially
- 21:05during
- 21:05this time
- 21:06from 10 p.m.
- 21:07to 2 a.m.,
- 21:09that is when
- 21:10our body's
- 21:11doing
- 21:11a different
- 21:12kind of
- 21:12digestion
- 21:13according
- 21:13to Ayurveda
- 21:15So it's not
- 21:16supposed to
- 21:17be digesting
- 21:17food, right?
- 21:18That's
- 21:19supposed to
- 21:19have already
- 21:20gone through.
- 21:21And during
- 21:22this time
- 21:22it's
- 21:23digesting
- 21:23life.
- 21:24It's
- 21:24digesting
- 21:25our
- 21:25experiences.
- 21:27It's
- 21:27compartmentalizing
- 21:28part mental
- 21:29criminalizing.
- 21:30You know,
- 21:30what happened
- 21:31to us
- 21:32during
- 21:32the day?
- 21:33Sorting out
- 21:34our memories,
- 21:35sorting out
- 21:36our stories.
- 21:37And
- 21:37that is also
- 21:38the time
- 21:39when,
- 21:40so that's
- 21:40when we are
- 21:41supposed to
- 21:42be in
- 21:42deep sleep.
- 21:43That is
- 21:44the time
- 21:44when most
- 21:45of the body
- 21:46regenerative
- 21:46processes
- 21:47happen.
- 21:47So those
- 21:48processes,
- 21:49they will be
- 21:50impaired
- 21:51if our stomach is
- 21:53full.
- 21:53Because then
- 21:54our body
- 21:55needs to
- 21:55multitask.
- 21:56we know
- 21:56that
- 21:56multitasking
- 21:57doesn't
- 21:58really work
- 21:59because you
- 21:59end up
- 22:00not doing
- 22:01any of the
- 22:01tasks well.
- 22:02So yes,
- 22:03you either
- 22:04digest.
- 22:04Everything or
- 22:05you have you.
- 22:06In the morning
- 22:07and you
- 22:08neither
- 22:08repair well.
- 22:09So yes.
- 22:10that's
- 22:10another thing
- 22:11that
- 22:11people can
- 22:12look at
- 22:13to sleep
- 22:13better.
- 22:14Definitely.
- 22:14And that is,
- 22:15I think,
- 22:16very true.
- 22:16We could do a
- 22:17whole
- 22:17episode on
- 22:18just eating
- 22:19windows,
- 22:19I feel like
- 22:20because
- 22:20especially
- 22:21when you are
- 22:21trying to
- 22:23heal yourself
- 22:24and you're
- 22:24going through
- 22:25something
- 22:25like that,
- 22:26there are
- 22:26so many
- 22:27studies on
- 22:28when the
- 22:28restorative
- 22:29processes
- 22:30happen in
- 22:30your body
- 22:31after eating,
- 22:32you know,
- 22:32there's
- 22:32different
- 22:33hour marks
- 22:33and I don't
- 22:33have them
- 22:34all memorized.
- 22:34But I've read
- 22:35this on
- 22:35the times
- 22:35where
- 22:36at this hour,
- 22:37since you've
- 22:37stopped
- 22:38eating,
- 22:38this process
- 22:39starts.
- 22:39And then
- 22:39at this
- 22:39hour mark,
- 22:40this process
- 22:40starts.
- 22:41And to
- 22:41get into
- 22:42that deep
- 22:42healing,
- 22:43restorative
- 22:44state,
- 22:44you have to be
- 22:45fasted for
- 22:45quite
- 22:45a few hours.
- 22:46So
- 22:46the normal,
- 22:47you know, for
- 22:48like
- 22:48obviously
- 22:49we're
- 22:49in America.
- 22:49So for us
- 22:50like that
- 22:50normal
- 22:51American
- 22:52eating
- 22:52schedule
- 22:53where you're
- 22:53eating at
- 22:54like
- 22:546:07 p.m.
- 22:55at night,
- 22:55you're never
- 22:56going to get
- 22:56to that
- 22:56phase.
- 22:59Yeah.
- 23:00I mean, also
- 23:00it depends
- 23:01how much
- 23:01you eat,
- 23:02right?
- 23:02so
- 23:03indeed this
- 23:04this could be
- 23:05this
- 23:05could be
- 23:05a whole
- 23:06other
- 23:06episode,
- 23:07whether we do
- 23:07a lot like
- 23:08digestion is
- 23:09so sleep
- 23:10is huge.
- 23:11Digestion
- 23:12is also huge.
- 23:12These are like,
- 23:13you know, the
- 23:14two things,
- 23:14but indeed
- 23:15measuring.
- 23:16there are
- 23:16actually
- 23:17physiological
- 23:18ways
- 23:18to measure
- 23:19what your
- 23:20perfect
- 23:21portion
- 23:21should be.
- 23:22so there are,
- 23:23there are
- 23:24ways that
- 23:24you can,
- 23:25that you
- 23:26can like
- 23:26get a sense
- 23:27of how much
- 23:28can I
- 23:28actually eat
- 23:29so that
- 23:30I don't
- 23:31feel heavy
- 23:31afterwards
- 23:32or that
- 23:33it doesn't
- 23:33disrupt
- 23:34my sleep.
- 23:35And so on?
- 23:35Yeah, yeah.
- 23:36And then also
- 23:37I think, not
- 23:38completely in
- 23:38line
- 23:39with that
- 23:39because it is
- 23:40sort of
- 23:40a whole
- 23:40other issue.
- 23:41But somewhat
- 23:42in line with
- 23:42that is
- 23:43alcohol.
- 23:43If you,
- 23:44you know,
- 23:44especially as
- 23:44we age,
- 23:45if we
- 23:45drink
- 23:46alcohol,
- 23:46a
- 23:46lot of times
- 23:47it wakes up
- 23:47in the middle
- 23:47of the night
- 23:48and there's
- 23:48the whole
- 23:49chemical
- 23:49process
- 23:49that's
- 23:50happening
- 23:50that is waking us
- 23:51up.
- 23:51So
- 23:51if that happens
- 23:52to you,
- 23:52you're not
- 23:53the only one.
- 23:53It's not
- 23:54a weird
- 23:54new thing
- 23:54that is
- 23:55actually,
- 23:56that's
- 23:56all of us.
- 23:56It is
- 23:57a chemical
- 23:57process
- 23:58that wakes
- 23:58you up around
- 23:59like 2 a.m..
- 23:59that's
- 24:00another thing
- 24:00that
- 24:00we could do
- 24:01is, you know,
- 24:02cut back on
- 24:02the alcohol
- 24:03or skip it.
- 24:05Matthew
- 24:06Walker
- 24:07talks about,
- 24:08in that book,
- 24:09why we sleep,
- 24:09as a very
- 24:10simple
- 24:11one pager
- 24:12of, like,
- 24:12good sleep
- 24:13hygiene.
- 24:13So this is
- 24:14going to be
- 24:14not from
- 24:15the Ayurveda
- 24:16perspective,
- 24:16from the
- 24:17scientific
- 24:17perspective,
- 24:18but they're
- 24:18actually
- 24:19super,
- 24:19super
- 24:19similar.
- 24:20And he also
- 24:21talks
- 24:21about alcohol
- 24:23quite quite
- 24:24extensively
- 24:24there.
- 24:25and
- 24:25the effect
- 24:26that it has
- 24:27on sleep.
- 24:27and caffeine
- 24:28also he has
- 24:29quite some
- 24:30discussions.
- 24:30I would
- 24:31really,
- 24:31really
- 24:32recommend
- 24:32this book.
- 24:32I,
- 24:33I use it
- 24:34a lot.
- 24:34I read it
- 24:35several
- 24:35times and,
- 24:36yeah,
- 24:37it's really
- 24:37good.
- 24:38So how much
- 24:38sleep
- 24:39do we need?
- 24:43so from
- 24:44the
- 24:44scientific
- 24:45perspective,
- 24:46they say
- 24:46between 7
- 24:47and 9 hours,
- 24:48but
- 24:49they don't
- 24:50say who
- 24:51should
- 24:51have seven,
- 24:51who should
- 24:52have eight
- 24:52and who
- 24:53should have
- 24:53nine hours.
- 24:54from the
- 24:55Ayurveda
- 24:55perspective,
- 24:56we do advise
- 24:57who should
- 24:58have seven,
- 24:58who should
- 24:59have eight
- 24:59and who
- 25:00should
- 25:00have nine.
- 25:01in general
- 25:01how much
- 25:02sleep
- 25:02a person
- 25:03needs will
- 25:03depend on
- 25:04their body
- 25:05type.
- 25:05No
- 25:06one should be
- 25:06getting less
- 25:07than seven,
- 25:07that's
- 25:08for sure.
- 25:08if you're
- 25:09getting less
- 25:09than seven
- 25:10hours,
- 25:10per day.
- 25:11Per night,
- 25:12you are sleep
- 25:12deprived.
- 25:13You're
- 25:13in sleep.
- 25:14You're
- 25:14running up
- 25:15a sleep
- 25:15deficit.
- 25:16from the
- 25:16Ayurveda
- 25:17perspective,
- 25:17in general,
- 25:18people
- 25:19who will be
- 25:20needing
- 25:21the most
- 25:21sleep.
- 25:22So nine
- 25:23hours
- 25:23will be
- 25:23people
- 25:24who are
- 25:25experiencing
- 25:26anxiety going
- 25:27through major
- 25:28changes,
- 25:29who
- 25:29already have
- 25:30a disrupted
- 25:31sleep.
- 25:31people who,
- 25:33tend to lose
- 25:34or gain
- 25:34weight, in
- 25:35short
- 25:36amount of time.
- 25:37So it's in
- 25:37general
- 25:38a person,
- 25:39there is
- 25:40less
- 25:40stability
- 25:41to them
- 25:42and to their
- 25:42body.
- 25:43they are
- 25:43either going
- 25:45through
- 25:45circumstances
- 25:46that are
- 25:47destabilizing
- 25:48them or
- 25:49their body
- 25:50is, going
- 25:51through
- 25:52some, or
- 25:53their body
- 25:53is depleted.
- 25:55so somebody
- 25:55who has,
- 25:56has
- 25:57experienced
- 25:57burnout,
- 25:58And now
- 25:58they're,
- 25:59they have
- 25:59like chronic
- 26:00fatigue
- 26:01or depletion
- 26:02and so on.
- 26:02So these are
- 26:03the types
- 26:04of people
- 26:05who would be,
- 26:06the types
- 26:07of adults
- 26:07because we're
- 26:07talking
- 26:08about adults
- 26:08here,
- 26:09who would be
- 26:09recommended
- 26:09to have
- 26:10the most
- 26:10sleep.
- 26:11As a general
- 26:12rule,
- 26:12if we're in
- 26:13recovery
- 26:14of health,
- 26:15we can have
- 26:15more,
- 26:16we should have
- 26:16even more
- 26:17than nine
- 26:18hours
- 26:19if we are
- 26:19feeling
- 26:20compelled
- 26:20to, people
- 26:21who can do
- 26:22with seven
- 26:22hours
- 26:23of sleep
- 26:23would be
- 26:24typically the
- 26:25the kind
- 26:25of person,
- 26:26that I
- 26:27discussed
- 26:27when we,
- 26:28when we're
- 26:29talking
- 26:29about coffee.
- 26:30people
- 26:30who will
- 26:31have, like,
- 26:31a larger
- 26:32frame,
- 26:33heavier
- 26:33weight
- 26:34and in
- 26:34general,
- 26:35for them,
- 26:35it's really
- 26:36difficult
- 26:36to get
- 26:37going in
- 26:37the morning.
- 26:38So
- 26:39they have
- 26:39this tendency
- 26:40to oversleep
- 26:42and they love
- 26:43lounging.
- 26:44they are like
- 26:45less inclined
- 26:46towards
- 26:47physical
- 26:47activity.
- 26:48So there
- 26:48we see that
- 26:49we're trying
- 26:49to bring
- 26:50in opposites
- 26:51to create
- 26:52balance.
- 26:52Right.
- 26:53So when
- 26:54when somebody
- 26:55is has more
- 26:56of this
- 26:57heavy quality
- 26:58in the mind
- 26:59and the body,
- 27:00we can
- 27:00have them on
- 27:00seven hours
- 27:01of sleep,
- 27:02that's fine.
- 27:02But you
- 27:03know, if,
- 27:04if you aim
- 27:04for like
- 27:058 or 9,
- 27:07that's,
- 27:07that's
- 27:08already,
- 27:08and it's
- 27:09probably much
- 27:10better than
- 27:10the majority
- 27:11of the
- 27:11population.
- 27:12just as some
- 27:13extra
- 27:14motivation,
- 27:15for people
- 27:16to, to
- 27:17take this
- 27:17really
- 27:18seriously.
- 27:18now there is
- 27:20science that
- 27:21shows to,
- 27:22for example,
- 27:22they did
- 27:23this
- 27:23experiment
- 27:24where
- 27:24they had
- 27:26people on
- 27:27six hours
- 27:28of sleep
- 27:29per night
- 27:29for one week
- 27:31in a lab,
- 27:31and they
- 27:32tested their
- 27:33genetic
- 27:33expression.
- 27:34So
- 27:35the genetic code
- 27:36they noticed
- 27:37starts
- 27:38to change
- 27:39after
- 27:39one week
- 27:40of
- 27:40getting the
- 27:41six hours
- 27:42of sleep.
- 27:42So that's
- 27:43crazy.
- 27:44the certain
- 27:45segments of
- 27:46the DNA
- 27:47molecule,
- 27:48you know,
- 27:48we have like,
- 27:49very long
- 27:50strands
- 27:50and only
- 27:51certain
- 27:52segments
- 27:53will be
- 27:53activated
- 27:54and expressed
- 27:55at
- 27:55certain times.
- 27:56And so
- 27:57they found
- 27:57that after
- 27:58only one week
- 27:59of having
- 28:00somebody on
- 28:00six hours
- 28:01of sleep,
- 28:02the segments
- 28:03that were,
- 28:04in relation
- 28:05to chronic
- 28:06inflammation.
- 28:09the part
- 28:09of the
- 28:10DNA molecule
- 28:11that starts,
- 28:11you give
- 28:12orders to
- 28:13our cells,
- 28:14the ones
- 28:15that increase
- 28:16are the ones
- 28:17that we don't
- 28:17want
- 28:17happening
- 28:18in our body.
- 28:19And so
- 28:19the ones that
- 28:20were related
- 28:21to, good
- 28:22metabolism
- 28:22and good
- 28:23immunity
- 28:24start
- 28:25to be
- 28:25expressed
- 28:26less.
- 28:27So that is
- 28:28very
- 28:28important
- 28:28to realize
- 28:29that,
- 28:30you know,
- 28:30when we are
- 28:32lacking
- 28:33sleep,
- 28:34our immunity
- 28:35is directly
- 28:36affected
- 28:37pretty fast.
- 28:38Like after
- 28:39one week,
- 28:39you can
- 28:39actually
- 28:40measure that
- 28:42in terms of
- 28:43you know,
- 28:43genetic
- 28:44expression
- 28:44and the
- 28:45activity of
- 28:46of our
- 28:46immune,
- 28:47immune cells.
- 28:48So I think
- 28:49that's,
- 28:49that's
- 28:49really
- 28:50important
- 28:50to illustrate
- 28:51that,
- 28:52you know,
- 28:52it's a it's
- 28:54a serious
- 28:54topic,
- 28:55very basic,
- 28:56but so, so,
- 28:56so important.
- 28:57Yeah.
- 28:58That is
- 28:58crazy.
- 28:59Yeah.
- 29:00It's
- 29:00fascinating.
- 29:01The and,
- 29:02you know,
- 29:02I mean
- 29:02everything is
- 29:03all our bodies.
- 29:04And you know,
- 29:05we're trying
- 29:05to find this
- 29:05harmonious
- 29:06balance.
- 29:07But
- 29:07I think so
- 29:08many people
- 29:08just kind of
- 29:09get sucked
- 29:10into
- 29:10their day
- 29:11to day grind,
- 29:11and
- 29:11they forget
- 29:12to check in
- 29:13with
- 29:13their body
- 29:14and see
- 29:14how are they
- 29:15feeling.
- 29:15And,
- 29:16you know,
- 29:16like,
- 29:16one of
- 29:17the things
- 29:17that I try to do
- 29:18is I try
- 29:18to drink
- 29:18a lot
- 29:19of water
- 29:19in the
- 29:19earlier
- 29:20part
- 29:20of the day
- 29:21so that I'm
- 29:21not thirsty
- 29:22and drinking
- 29:23a lot
- 29:23before
- 29:23bedtime.
- 29:24So that's
- 29:24a conscious
- 29:25thing I do.
- 29:26Yeah,
- 29:26but I haven't
- 29:26always
- 29:27done that.
- 29:27And there are
- 29:28days that
- 29:29I'm busy
- 29:29and I
- 29:29don't
- 29:30drink a lot.
- 29:30And then
- 29:30I realize
- 29:31I'm thirsty
- 29:32in
- 29:32the evening
- 29:32and I drink
- 29:33a ton of water,
- 29:33and then
- 29:34I'm up
- 29:34half
- 29:34the night.
- 29:35So, you know,
- 29:36even
- 29:36something
- 29:37like that
- 29:37just
- 29:37listening to
- 29:38your body
- 29:38cues, knowing
- 29:39when you're
- 29:39thirsty,
- 29:40drinking
- 29:40early in
- 29:41the day,
- 29:41you know,
- 29:42all of
- 29:42the things
- 29:43that
- 29:43we can do
- 29:43that if we
- 29:44just, like,
- 29:45took the time
- 29:46to check in
- 29:46with our body
- 29:47and listen,
- 29:48we could
- 29:48probably be
- 29:49a lot
- 29:49better at
- 29:50just
- 29:50picking up
- 29:51our own cues.
- 29:52Yeah,
- 29:53actually,
- 29:54one of the
- 29:54first
- 29:55exercises,
- 29:56one of the
- 29:56first
- 29:56homework
- 29:57that I
- 29:58give to
- 29:59my clients
- 30:00is to fill in
- 30:01like a
- 30:02wellness
- 30:02journal
- 30:03where
- 30:03they, for
- 30:04a week or so,
- 30:05they're
- 30:06noting down
- 30:07everything
- 30:07they're
- 30:08eating,
- 30:08when they're
- 30:09eating,
- 30:10when they're
- 30:10going to bed,
- 30:11and then how
- 30:12they're
- 30:12feeling
- 30:13either
- 30:13right after
- 30:14or the
- 30:14next day.
- 30:15And
- 30:16pretty soon
- 30:16people notice
- 30:17that certain
- 30:18types
- 30:18of foods
- 30:19make
- 30:19them feel
- 30:20a certain
- 30:20way.
- 30:21You know,
- 30:21or when they
- 30:22prioritize
- 30:24certain
- 30:24things over,
- 30:26for example,
- 30:27sleep.
- 30:27What happens
- 30:28the next day,
- 30:29you know?
- 30:30So
- 30:30yeah,
- 30:31absolutely.
- 30:31And this is
- 30:32just one
- 30:33way, like,
- 30:33you know,
- 30:34documenting,
- 30:35on a piece
- 30:35of paper
- 30:36can be a tool
- 30:37to do that.
- 30:38But
- 30:38as you say,
- 30:39just like
- 30:40listening to
- 30:41to your body,
- 30:42you know,
- 30:43noticing
- 30:43the cause
- 30:44and effect,
- 30:45you know,
- 30:46checking in
- 30:46with yourself
- 30:47after
- 30:48you have had
- 30:48a heavy
- 30:49dinner,
- 30:50the
- 30:50next morning,
- 30:51how do I feel?
- 30:52And then
- 30:53hopefully
- 30:53registering
- 30:54that and
- 30:55allowing that
- 30:56to influence
- 30:56your
- 30:57decisions in
- 30:57the future?
- 31:00Yeah,
- 31:01absolutely.
- 31:01And I
- 31:02always
- 31:02wake up puffy
- 31:03like a
- 31:03marshmallow
- 31:04and I
- 31:04can feel it
- 31:05before
- 31:06I get out
- 31:06of bed.
- 31:06I open
- 31:07my eyes
- 31:07and I
- 31:07can feel
- 31:08that
- 31:08heaviness in
- 31:08my eyelid
- 31:09and I
- 31:10know, oh,
- 31:11why did I do
- 31:11that?
- 31:12Well,
- 31:12thank you
- 31:12so much
- 31:13for being on
- 31:14and talking
- 31:14to us.
- 31:14That was
- 31:15actually
- 31:15super
- 31:15informative.
- 31:16And
- 31:16I feel like
- 31:17I got
- 31:17a lot
- 31:17out of it.
- 31:18I can't wait
- 31:18to check out
- 31:19that book.
- 31:19And where
- 31:20can we find you
- 31:21if we want
- 31:22to check out
- 31:22your stuff?
- 31:23Sure.
- 31:23So, the best
