- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 18th of
- 0:16March and welcome to the next section of the year as we are
- 0:22reading God's Word together. Ah yes, we have closed the book
- 0:26on 1st and 2nd Kings and now we move forward to the Gospel of
- 0:32John. Yes, this incredible gospel, the
- 0:35spiritual gospel as many call it.
- 0:38John's gospel falls into one of the four gospels.
- 0:41And while the other three really do take a historical life of
- 0:45Jesus approach to telling the Jesus story, John in his
- 0:50approach really focuses in on who is the Son of God and what
- 0:55does it mean to be his disciple in the world today.
- 0:59So attitudes around the book of John have changed for many
- 1:03years. People, well, they look down on
- 1:06it as the least of the four gospels because it didn't
- 1:08include all the life events of Jesus.
- 1:11But lately people have adored it and you'll know that a lot of
- 1:16the time when people print little get to know Jesus
- 1:19booklets or tracts, there's often ones printed of John.
- 1:23Because John really captures this beautiful essence of what
- 1:27it means to be Jesus disciple and follow in his footsteps.
- 1:32And today we are going to read not the whole of the 1st
- 1:35chapter, but half. And yeah, that'll make sense
- 1:37because as we get closer to Easter, the the great passion
- 1:41will happen on Good Friday if we just break up chapter 1 into two
- 1:46days. So that's what we're going to do
- 1:47today. And today we will read this
- 1:49beautiful prologue about Christ being there at the beginning of
- 1:53the world. This really echoes the start of
- 1:56Genesis as we hear about God in creation, essentially the Jesus
- 2:02and Spirit in creation. So join me as we read this
- 2:06beautiful, this poetic John chapter one one to 18.
- 2:21In the beginning, the word already existed.
- 2:25The word was with God and the Word was God.
- 2:30He existed in the beginning with God.
- 2:34God created everything through him and nothing was created
- 2:39except through him. The Word gave life to everything
- 2:44that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.
- 2:50The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can
- 2:55never extinguish it. God sent a man, John the
- 3:01Baptist, to tell about the light so that everyone might believe.
- 3:05Because of his testimony, John himself was not the light.
- 3:10He was simply a witness to tell about the light.
- 3:14The one who is the true light, who gives light to everyone, was
- 3:19coming into the world. He came into the very world he
- 3:24created, but the world didn't recognise him.
- 3:29He came to his own people and even they rejected him.
- 3:34But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right
- 3:38to become children of God. They are reborn not with a
- 3:44physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a
- 3:48birth that comes from God. So the Word became human and
- 3:55made His home among us. He was full of unfailing love
- 4:01and faithfulness, and we have seen His glory, the glory of the
- 4:07Father's one and only Son. John testified about Him when he
- 4:12shouted to the crowds. This is the one I was talking
- 4:16about when I said, someone is coming after me who is far
- 4:21greater than I am, for He existed long before me.
- 4:26From His abundance we have all received one gracious blessing
- 4:31after another, for the law was given through Moses, but God's
- 4:36unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.
- 4:43No one has ever seen God, but the unique One who is God
- 4:48Himself is near to the Father's heart.
- 4:53He has revealed God to us. Oh our incredible triune
- 5:08Godfather, Son and Spirit, we worship you and we praise you.
- 5:18Thank you for the gift of Jesus. Thank you that through Jesus we
- 5:25see not only the law that you gave us, but we see your
- 5:30unfailing love and faithfulness. Let that always be the tent pole
- 5:38on which our life spreads out and is present in the world.
- 5:43To know that your love for us, he's not conditional, is not
- 5:47partial, and is not temporary. That your love for us is
- 5:53unfailing. Come challenge, come blockade,
- 5:59come time immeasurable. Your love stretches beyond all
- 6:04of that and never, never fails to reach us.
- 6:09And you are faithful to us beyond every doubt, beyond every
- 6:14obstacle in the way between you and us.
- 6:18You love us and are faithful to us.
- 6:23May our life be but a mirror reflecting your love and
- 6:28faithfulness back to you and back to your creation around us.
- 6:34We give ourselves to you as a living sacrifice, every step we
- 6:38take, every breath we take, that we would be true to that calling
- 6:43in our lives. And we pray all of this through
- 6:47your life, giving name Jesus, Amen.
