- 0:02The concept of Maya is frequently described as the
- 0:06world being an illusion that mystifies our senses and our
- 0:10minds such that we take it for real when it is not the truth of
- 0:15existence. We are then asked to cut through
- 0:19the illusion to find the actual reality, the Absolute, the
- 0:23consciousness that is coincident with all existence and which is
- 0:28not bound by any of the forms taken by this external illusory
- 0:32reality. The Mayavadins have indeed
- 0:36captured A partial truth of existence.
- 0:39The reality of the creation is not to be denied, but our
- 0:43perception of it and our interpretation of its meaning
- 0:48constitute the real illusion. In the 4th chapter of the Life
- 0:53Divine, Sri Arobinda works out the harmonizing synthesis
- 0:57between those who hold the world as real and spiritual endeavor
- 1:01to be illusory and those who hold the world as illusory and
- 1:07the spiritual endeavor is real. He defines this as reality,
- 1:12omnipresent. The entire Universal Creation is
- 1:16a manifestation of the Divine and its reality is based in the
- 1:21reality of the Divine Existence. If we look at our normal
- 1:27standpoint, we are rooted in the ego and we naturally experience
- 1:31the ego consciousness as a separate independent, self
- 1:36standing reality facing the world and other independent
- 1:39actors in the world as being able to make free and
- 1:44independent choices and either harmonize or conflict with
- 1:49others. The alternative viewpoint is one
- 1:52that treats the individual as a Nexus or point of expression in
- 1:56the universal consciousness. An example may help us grasp
- 2:00this concept. We see the vast ocean before us.
- 2:05Someone captures some sea water in a container.
- 2:09The water in the ocean and the water in the container are the
- 2:13same, the difference between them being simply that some of
- 2:17that water is now within the container.
- 2:20Now if we conceive of the container as a permeable
- 2:24membrane that allows impacts, motion, heat, cooling, salinity,
- 2:30etcetera from the wider ocean to affect the contained water, and
- 2:35similarly the water inside to migrate out under various
- 2:39conditions, we can get some sense of how the universal
- 2:43consciousness both cordons itself off into these separate
- 2:47standpoints and how it at the same time manifests its
- 2:52intention through them. Sri Aurobindo writes quote What
- 2:58is this divine supreme will and how can it be recognized by our
- 3:02by our deluded instruments and our blind prisoned intelligence.
- 3:07Ordinarily we conceive of ourselves as a separate eye in
- 3:12the universe that governs a separate body, and mental and
- 3:15moral nature chooses in full liberty its own self determined
- 3:20actions, and is independent and therefore sole master of its
- 3:25works and responsible. It is not easy for the ordinary
- 3:29mind, the mind that is not thought nor looked deeply into
- 3:33its own constitution and constituents.
- 3:37It is difficult even for minds that have thought but have no
- 3:40spiritual vision and experience to imagine how there can be
- 3:45anything else in US truer, deeper and more powerful than
- 3:50this apparent I and its empire. But the very first step towards
- 3:56self knowledge, as towards the true knowledge of phenomena, is
- 4:00to get behind the apparent truth of things and find the real but
- 4:04masked essential and dynamic truth which their appearances
- 4:09cover. This ego or I is not a lasting
- 4:14truth, much less our essential part.
- 4:17It is only a formation of nature, a mental form of
- 4:21thought, centralization in the perceiving and discriminating
- 4:24mind, a vital form of the centralization of feeling and
- 4:28sensation in our parts of life, a form of physical conscious
- 4:33reception, centralizing substance and function of
- 4:36substance in our bodies. All that we internally are is
- 4:41not ego, but consciousness, soul, or spirit.
- 4:46All that we externally and superficially are and do is not
- 4:50ego but nature. An executive cosmic force shapes
- 4:55us and dictates through our temperament and environment and
- 4:59mentality, so shaped through our individualized formulation of
- 5:04the cosmic energies, our actions and their results.
- 5:09Truly we do not think, will, or act.
- 5:13But thought occurs in US, will occurs in US, impulse and act
- 5:19occur in us. Our ego sense gathers around
- 5:22itself, refers to itself, all this flow of natural activities.
- 5:28It is cosmic force. It is nature that forms the
- 5:32thought, imposes the will, imparts the impulse.
- 5:38Our body, mind and ego are a wave of that sea of force in
- 5:42action and do not govern it, but by it are governed and directed.
- 5:48The Sadiq in his progress towards truth and self
- 5:52knowledge, must come to a point where the soul opens its eyes of
- 5:56vision and recognizes this truth of ego and this truth of works.
- 6:02He gives up the idea of a mental vital physical eye that acts or
- 6:08governs action. He recognizes that Prakriti
- 6:12force of cosmic nature following her fixed modes is in him and
- 6:18all things and creatures, the one and only worker.
