- 0:09SPEAKER_06: Well, hello, hello, hello, hello.
- 0:12SPEAKER_06: How are we?
- 0:13SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 0:13SPEAKER_02: You didn't do your dance today.
- 0:15SPEAKER_02: I'm disappointed.
- 0:17SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 0:18SPEAKER_05: But when you make fun of me every time I do it, and then wonder why I don't do it.
- 0:23SPEAKER_05: I can't wait for this.
- 0:24SPEAKER_06: I love the fact that they had we've been sitting in the street for like 30 minutes.
- 0:27SPEAKER_06: They never talked about the dance, but he knew like he was not moving and she was watching.
- 0:32SPEAKER_06: No movement.
- 0:33SPEAKER_06: And so anyway.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: I yesterday had somebody text me a I guess a real TikTok.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: I don't know what it is.
- 0:43SPEAKER_02: So funny.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: And this is okay, so Proverbs 27.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: You always hear about Proverbs 27, 15.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: Jamie will use this a lot.
- 0:56SPEAKER_06: And this is why we have you on the podcast.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: A quarrelsome wife is as annoying as a constant dripping on a rainy day.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Stopping her complaints is like trying to stop the wind or trying to hold something with greased hands, which that's hilarious.
- 1:11SPEAKER_02: Which, by the way, I'm not a quarrelsome wife.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: I'm very easy to get along with.
- 1:16SPEAKER_02: Okay, but nobody ever reads verse 14.
- 1:20SPEAKER_02: And people who have this personality that is like Jamie Bridges, they think it's the best one.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: And like everybody else is wrong.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: So this is what Proverbs 2714 says.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: A loud and cheerful greeting early in the morning will be taken as a curse.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: And my friend who's in the tune yesterday is like, thank you.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: I feel very seen.
- 1:45SPEAKER_05: I need names.
- 1:46SPEAKER_05: Who's this friend?
- 1:47SPEAKER_05: I'll tell you later.
- 1:48SPEAKER_05: No, you call this person out on the podcast.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: It's Mary Kay.
- 1:53SPEAKER_05: Enough said.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: Which I feel like she's probably voicess in the morning.
- 1:58SPEAKER_03: She probably thinks you expect.
- 2:01SPEAKER_05: Did Mary Kay Gruska send this out?
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: She just sent it to me.
- 2:06SPEAKER_05: She said this is me.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: No, no, no.
- 2:08SPEAKER_02: She just sent it to me with no words.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: And I was like, oh my gosh, this is my live.
- 2:12SPEAKER_05: Or did she send 15?
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: No, no.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: It just it was like a meme.
- 2:14SPEAKER_05: I mean, they go together.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: It's a really funny video.
- 2:17SPEAKER_05: You know why?
- 2:18SPEAKER_05: Because the person who's loud and cheerful in the morning makes the wife quarrelsome.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: No, no, just no wait.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: No, it doesn't have to be the wife.
- 2:27SPEAKER_05: It is annoying.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: You know, there's some woman that her feet foot hood the floor and she's singing a song.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: Some people that are made like you.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: And then there's husbands that are made like me that are like, why are you talking so early in the morning?
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: Quiet.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: Why do you have words coming out of your mouth?
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: So anyway, it's biblical.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: You shouldn't sing early in the morning.
- 2:47SPEAKER_02: It's taken as a curse.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: It's a proverb that says it's better to live in a desert than with a nagging wife or something like that.
- 2:55SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And she's sitting there and she gets this look in her face.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: She goes, Anybody have any recommendations of what desert I could drop him off in?
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Listen, I could rat Jamie out right now, but I'm not going to.
- 3:12SPEAKER_05: I don't want to hear it.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: No, I'm going to do it very vague because he's not to know what I'm talking about.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: There has been something in our home that has needed cleaned for at least 10 days.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: And I was not the one who did it, so I wasn't touching it.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: Ten days, people.
- 3:28SPEAKER_06: Stinking girls.
- 3:29SPEAKER_06: Yo, Jamie.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: That was ten days.
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: It was all of seven, but it was 10.
- 3:34SPEAKER_06: Seven or ten.
- 3:35SPEAKER_06: So what you just showed us is how inconsistent you came here.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't know.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: This is like three days ago.
- 3:40SPEAKER_02: I come to bed and I said, hey, there's this thing that you know it's still sitting there.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: And now it's been post seven days at least.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: And I haven't nagged you about it.
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: Not one time.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Because I'm seeing if you're going to clean it up.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: And it took two more days.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: And then it got cleaned up.
- 3:56SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 3:57SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Since since we're going to be able to do it, no, my proving my point that I am not a quarrelsome wife.
- 4:05SPEAKER_05: I've day seven you were.
- 4:07unknown: No, no, no, no, no.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: Oh no.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: I just gently got in better.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: I didn't nag at all.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: I didn't nag at that.
- 4:13SPEAKER_05: You said from day one, I'm going to start nagging.
- 4:15SPEAKER_05: You know why you didn't nag?
- 4:17SPEAKER_05: Because I I got rid of it.
- 4:19SPEAKER_05: Mike's voice.
- 4:20SPEAKER_05: I'd shaved it in the shower.
- 4:22SPEAKER_05: And so there was hair in there.
- 4:23SPEAKER_05: Oh, I hear that.
- 4:24SPEAKER_05: Listen to me.
- 4:25SPEAKER_02: I wasn't going to say.
- 4:26SPEAKER_05: I go in the shower.
- 4:28SPEAKER_05: Your legs.
- 4:28SPEAKER_05: And there's long hairs.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: Not anymore.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Just on the side of the thing.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: If I'm the one that cleans the shower, I can leave it.
- 4:38SPEAKER_02: I knew there's a bathroom situation.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: Dirty as I was did.
- 4:41SPEAKER_02: I was not about to clean up beard hair.
- 4:44SPEAKER_06: No what?
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: That was sitting in the corner of my shower.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: Not doing it.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: Because I didn't put it there.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: Sometimes it's like wrong bathrooms.
- 4:52SPEAKER_06: This is how we have a happy marriage with you.
- 4:54SPEAKER_02: But yeah, but I bet you cleaned your bathroom.
- 4:55SPEAKER_06: She does not ever clean my bathroom.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Do you clean it?
- 4:59SPEAKER_06: I do.
- 4:59SPEAKER_06: Just did yesterday.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 5:01SPEAKER_06: Once I mean I do clean it, but like my.
- 5:04SPEAKER_06: I could do that, but I don't like the basement bathroom.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: The shower's smaller.
- 5:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I have one.
- 5:10SPEAKER_05: I take the showers down there, but I'm like, oh, this is not.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: Oh, because the girls use upstairs.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: The girls.
- 5:15SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we don't have a like a we don't have a bathroom connected to a bedroom.
- 5:18SPEAKER_06: So like I mean, if it was uh if it was in our master bath, I would be using it for sure.
- 5:22SPEAKER_06: I think I would.
- 5:23SPEAKER_02: She might be thinking different, but and so this is just to prove my point that Jamie does not mind loud music in the morning coming out of his face as a curse, but I'm not quarrelsome.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: So I just wanted to prove to you biblically that you're not going to be able to do it.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: It will be hold on, hold on.
- 5:37SPEAKER_05: But listen, there's a difference.
- 5:38SPEAKER_05: You gotta translate this right.
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: It will be taken as a curse, which means you're cursing my day.
- 5:44SPEAKER_05: Sometimes it's not what is intended.
- 5:47SPEAKER_05: I'm not intending you you're just taking it wrong.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, is why I'm here.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: Proverbs is warning you.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: It says Be joyful of the Lord always, but just be wise on when you use the joy.
- 5:59SPEAKER_06: The joy of the Lord.
- 6:00SPEAKER_06: As and this is how we how long you guys have been married?
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: Twenty-nine and a half years.
- 6:04SPEAKER_06: Opposites attract.
- 6:05SPEAKER_06: Oh, for worse.
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, we will kill each other for the same.
- 6:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's right.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: Jamie would have died a long time ago.
- 6:16SPEAKER_06: That is interesting.
- 6:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 6:18SPEAKER_06: So funny.
- 6:18SPEAKER_06: Thanks, Mary Kay, for that laugh.
- 6:20SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 6:20SPEAKER_06: Thanks, Mary Kay.
- 6:22SPEAKER_06: Thanks, Mary Kay.
- 6:23SPEAKER_06: I'm coming, Mary Kay.
- 6:25SPEAKER_06: I'm coming.
- 6:25SPEAKER_06: Mary Kay, lose my number.
- 6:27SPEAKER_06: She's gonna love this.
- 6:28SPEAKER_06: She's I'm gonna be.
- 6:30SPEAKER_06: She probably doesn't even listen.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: Mary Kay, let us know if you listen.
- 6:33SPEAKER_06: You're gonna get a text message for sure.
- 6:35SPEAKER_02: Somebody's gonna tell her, listen to that podcast they're talking about you.
- 6:38SPEAKER_06: Oh man.
- 6:39SPEAKER_06: Man, oh man.
- 6:42SPEAKER_06: All right.
- 6:44SPEAKER_06: Talked about sinners on Sunday.
- 6:47SPEAKER_06: No, we talked about the goodness of God.
- 6:49SPEAKER_06: The goodness of God, yes.
- 6:50SPEAKER_06: We talked about the goodness of God on Sunday.
- 6:52SPEAKER_06: And uh it was a great message.
- 6:53SPEAKER_06: I actually told my wife.
- 6:54SPEAKER_06: I said, I'm gonna I'm gonna actually get his notes and put that one in the file for later on in the future when I have to, when Jamie says to me, Hey, I need you to go preach at somebody's church for me.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, I'll just oh good.
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: I got this one.
- 7:05SPEAKER_06: This is gonna be a good one.
- 7:06SPEAKER_05: I think I could preach Luke 15 like all the time.
- 7:09SPEAKER_05: That's one of my favorites.
- 7:11SPEAKER_05: And I just feel like it's uh a chapter that you get something out of you know, like some a different perspective all the time.
- 7:19SPEAKER_05: And you know, for me, like three weeks ago when I was reading it, it was um the goodness of God's song was you know uh something I was singing or had heard, and so that was early in the morning.
- 7:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so it was uh it was a uh um it was more from that perspective.
- 7:37SPEAKER_05: It's like I wonder why it is called the prodigal son.
- 7:40SPEAKER_05: Because really the prodigal son is, you know, a very small, I mean it's who's represented in the audience.
- 7:47SPEAKER_05: You know, there's a bunch of prodigals, notorious sinners, and but like I mean, if you were to say to me who it was about, I would say goodness, uh a good father, an older brother and a younger brother.
- 8:02SPEAKER_05: I would I probably wouldn't even put the the younger brother first.
- 8:05SPEAKER_05: I mean, outside of he's mentioned first.
- 8:09SPEAKER_05: But again, the audacity and the uh the shock to that audience would have been pretty real about what the younger brother did.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:19SPEAKER_05: And and we don't, you know, obviously we don't it's not part of our culture.
- 8:23SPEAKER_05: I mean, I think inheritance is, but asking, you know, for it.
- 8:27SPEAKER_05: And I mean, all the all the you know, cultural relevance of uh I have two sons, so there's there's that mindset, you know.
- 8:37SPEAKER_05: Obviously, they're different boys, and if I just had two sons, you know, like firstborn is different.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: I mean, you learned a lot.
- 8:44SPEAKER_05: You you um you were growing with them, you know, and and they had, you know, for Jake, three and a half years by, you know, himself with just us.
- 8:54SPEAKER_05: And so they're always at different stages of life.
- 8:56SPEAKER_05: Now we held Jake back, and and so that caused them to be in high school at the same time.
- 9:02SPEAKER_05: But outside of that, they're at different always at different stages of life.
- 9:06SPEAKER_05: So like to to see those sons as similar it was is very difficult for me because they're they're not Jake and Carson are not the same to me.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: They're Jamie and Kelly.
- 9:18SPEAKER_06: No, well you're like Carson.
- 9:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: You know.
- 9:24SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 9:25SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: I think uh I think yeah, I I agree with that because I in some respects I think the older son's perspective or attitude was more skewed than the younger son's.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: I think there's more said telling about him than the younger son that goes off and squanders, you know.
- 9:45SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: But just his attitude and and his interaction with the father and his, you know, skewed relationship with his brother and all of that.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: I think there's I think that particle's more about, you know, him not understanding the his dad's good attitude or good heart for the younger son.
- 10:08SPEAKER_05: And you know, so so Mike, have you ever heard um, and I'm obviously I'm talking, I'm gonna talk about it this this Sunday, but have you ever heard um cultural relevance of responsibility of the older brother and his responsibility in Jewish culture that if the younger son strayed, not no not so much uh ran like the prodigal son did, but if he strayed, the responsibility first and foremost was on the older brother.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: I I have and I'll go back to and study for it's I I studied Hebraic roots for intensively for like five or six years, meaning Hebraic roots, meaning the deeper insets of the Jewish culture and custom and all of that.
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: And there is something when you said that I reminds me that I did I have read something uh about the oldest son's responsibility, even when the father's still alive.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: The older son has a family responsibility, a legacy responsibility.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: So I I can't remember all the minutia about it, but I have heard something along those lines.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Or read something along those lines.
- 11:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 11:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I have too.
- 11:28SPEAKER_05: And I it was a couple of years ago when I, you know, first heard that, and I was like, man, that makes so much sense as to the attitude that the older brother had towards his younger brother.
- 11:40SPEAKER_05: But what I when I read this last time that hit me the most uh that I was that it was divided amongst both sons, which means the older brother, because of the request, got his inheritance.
- 11:54SPEAKER_05: Which is I mean, fascinating to me.
- 11:56SPEAKER_05: Because he was still there.
- 11:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, think about all the things that he is enjoying, you know.
- 12:04SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: I I heard this once years ago, um, about the whole attitude of the older brother and now with the father and and it being kind of conveyed in the sense of like jealousy or envy, you know, that the younger son got a fatted calf and he got all this stuff.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: And and the the phrase was, you know, be happy that the father's still handing out fatted calves.
- 12:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Instead of getting jealous about it, be happy about when and it was about, you know, when you see people that um that you don't think the father should be blessing in our lives, but yet we see that.
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: And I've I've there's been times I've asked the Lord, why are you so good to those people?
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't be.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: Have you ever done that?
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sure.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: I was actually gonna say that um on our She Wakes episode that actually drops today.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: So if you go listen to it, you'll hear Jess is talking about um her youngest son and how he has a heart for um the homeless.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: And so she keeps stuff in his car, her car to hand out.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: And I we talk about it a little bit and chat about, but then after, as the week went on, I was kind of convicted about it because I said, We, you know, if you drive in South County any time of the day, you'll see they're always on the same corner.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: And so if the little girls are with me, they'll be like, they don't have a home.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: I'm like, no, they don't have a home.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: Like, and you usually don't have money or anything to give them.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: So they're like, but um, do we have anything to give them?
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: I'm like, no, but and I try to be like, but you guys, sometimes people choose to do this as a job, and but they're showing up for work, and this is just how like it's a life they choose.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: But I got convicted this week, and I think this goes along with the older brother.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: Is that I was like, Am I teaching them to not see, like to not notice the people that I think shouldn't be noticed?
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: Does that make sense?
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: Like to teach them to see the unseeable instead of oh yeah, let's have granola bars in our car, and every time we see a homeless man or a homeless person asking, I'm gonna hand something out my window, so my little girls are like it's just teaching generosity and teaching to like see people.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: So I'm like, did the older brother get to the point where he's like, I don't even see the unseeable anymore.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: Like my brother's unseeable.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: That's a good point.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: I don't even see him anymore.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: And so then when he comes home, it's like, how dare you, Dad?
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: Like, you went and squandered away everything that you had, and then you just come back home and you get celebrated for that.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: Like, I could see that as a sibling.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: You'd be like, What?
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: You know, but I was like, Oh yeah, let's not look past the people we don't think are worthy of our eyes.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: That's such a powerful statement, I think what you just said, seeing the unseeable.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: Because that's what Jesus did.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: Jesus always saw the unseeable that society is.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: And so why don't we?
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: Why don't we?
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: You know, I I there was on Tesson Ferry in 270, there's always a group of people there.
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: And so one day I was at I was at the stoplight and there was a guy right there, and so um I gave him some money, you know.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Because part of that is the Lord dealt with me one time about don't ever get so hard-hearted that you even if they're wasting it, he said it's not about them, it's about your heart.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: And so I I, you know, gave this guy some money and he was standing.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: I said, Tell me your story.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: And he said, Well, I was I was in prison.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: He goes, I'm gonna be honest with you, I was in prison.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: And I got out and I was struggling finding a job.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: I was living with my sister, and my sister died.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: And so when she died, I had to move out because she was renting the house, and I and and and then the light turned, you know, that I got that much of his story to like.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: How how many times do we not stop to listen to the story of somebody with it?
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: And sometimes I realize there's there's the the possibility that they're gonna give you a line, you know.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: But still it made me something think about there's a guy that whatever he days in prison, he gets out, he's trying to make you know, trying to make a change, and then life just throws him all these curves.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: And I don't ever I don't ever want to get hard-hearted towards people like that.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 16:16SPEAKER_02: And it's about salvation, right?
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:18SPEAKER_02: Like the parallel the um prodigal son's about salvation.
- 16:21SPEAKER_05: This is why else I well, this is why else I was thinking about it, because when you read Luke 15, I mean he tells three stories, they all go together, but he says the lost sheep, what does the shepherd do?
- 16:33SPEAKER_05: He searches for the one.
- 16:35SPEAKER_05: But the woman, what does she do?
- 16:37SPEAKER_05: She searches for the lost coin.
- 16:39SPEAKER_05: You get to the prodigal son, the older brother doesn't search for a son for his brother.
- 16:45SPEAKER_05: So it's like that's the parallel of the three.
- 16:48SPEAKER_05: And that's I think he says it at the end to the Pharisee because he's saying to them, You are the older brother, and this group of people are coming to me, and you're not searching them.
- 17:04SPEAKER_05: Instead, you're complaining about them, you're not doing these things.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: So I think all three stories go together, and it it they're the they're the shepherd, they're the woman, and then hey, as the older brother, why aren't you why aren't you going after the younger brother?
- 17:18SPEAKER_05: So that's that's a good point.
- 17:22SPEAKER_06: If you don't want to answer this question, because obviously you're gonna communicate this on Sunday, you know, you're gonna talk about this, but like practically what does it look like today when we act like the older brother?
- 17:33SPEAKER_05: Um, I mean, for me, like it's um like the grace is different.
- 17:40SPEAKER_05: You know, like the the older brother needed God's grace from his rebellion, the older brother needed God's grace from his religion, and both needed the same father.
- 17:52SPEAKER_05: So it's like don't judge people because they sin differently than you.
- 17:58SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 17:59SPEAKER_05: Like from that standpoint, like the like the moment we start saying he's the sinner, I'm not, it's trouble, we've become the older brother.
- 18:06SPEAKER_05: And I read a book years ago, I think you did too, Sean, called Pharisectomy.
- 18:10SPEAKER_05: And it's talking about how every um every follower of Jesus, we contend with the Pharisee inside of us.
- 18:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:19SPEAKER_05: And it's because we love law, we don't love grace.
- 18:22SPEAKER_05: We love grace when it's given to us.
- 18:24SPEAKER_05: I don't love grace when I have to extend it to someone else.
- 18:27SPEAKER_05: And so it's uh so all of a sudden we think we're they're undeserving of something.
- 18:33SPEAKER_05: I mean, that's why I say it's like it's like saying, you know, our poop don't stink.
- 18:37SPEAKER_05: I mean, like every single one of us like have something, and and I think that's what a world, I mean, if you if you watch any um videos in culture today where you're uh interviewing a group of people, or like Stu, who's on college campuses, one of the number one defenders when when these people are asking questions is you think you're better than me.
- 19:05SPEAKER_05: You think because you have Jesus, you're better than me, or you're going to heaven, you're better than me.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: And that's a wrong, obviously, that's wrong thinking, but how do we combat that thinking?
- 19:16SPEAKER_05: Which is a religious spirit, right?
- 19:18SPEAKER_05: It's a religious spirit to think that um I'm better than someone else.
- 19:24SPEAKER_05: And and I think ultimately that's what the older brother's saying.
- 19:29SPEAKER_05: Like he did something that I didn't do, I did do these things, and the father never disagrees.
- 19:36SPEAKER_05: You have kept all these laws, you have done, you have stayed with me.
- 19:41SPEAKER_05: Come inside.
- 19:42SPEAKER_05: I think the the other thing that stood out to me is that the father came outside to him.
- 19:48SPEAKER_05: You know, like the the same father who goes to the center who who the or the prodigal, I wouldn't say sinner, the to the prodigal, to the rebellious.
- 19:56SPEAKER_05: He also goes out to the religious and says, You're you're too invited.
- 20:00SPEAKER_05: He didn't embarrass him, he didn't from a microphone say, My older son is outside.
- 20:05SPEAKER_05: I mean, he's dealing with both of their sins.
- 20:07SPEAKER_05: He's dealing with both of their sins.
- 20:08SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's really good.
- 20:10SPEAKER_05: And so to me, that's the I mean, I I just I mean, I already think people that come into church that don't have a church background carry so much shame into it.
- 20:22SPEAKER_05: We cannot contribute to that.
- 20:23SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 20:24SPEAKER_05: We must have to break, we gotta break down that that barrier of shame that people are bringing in already.
- 20:30SPEAKER_05: Yep, they already feel unworthy.
- 20:33SPEAKER_05: Getting them to that point is somewhat of a miracle.
- 20:36SPEAKER_05: When you ask people like, man, I've invited people to church for so long, or I've told them my story for so long, and they finally came.
- 20:43SPEAKER_05: It's like that should be the moment where what pushes them over is the way we we treat them.
- 20:47SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 20:48SPEAKER_05: But instead, there's times, and we man, we've all heard stories of people.
- 20:52SPEAKER_05: I mean, we watched, you know, the the the pageant, you know, the greatest pageant ever.
- 20:57SPEAKER_05: I mean, those movie.
- 21:00SPEAKER_05: I mean, we watched it last night, you know.
- 21:01SPEAKER_05: So uh the herdmans, I mean, that's the whole point of the whole movie.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, is that the herdmans cannot be in church because they're not good enough.
- 21:09SPEAKER_05: And I mean, we've carried that attitude, which sounds awful out front, right?
- 21:13SPEAKER_05: Found sounds awful that church people would say someone's not good enough, but that is what the young that's what the older brother's doing.
- 21:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he's saying he's not worthy, he does not deserve a celebration.
- 21:25SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 21:27SPEAKER_06: That's really good.
- 21:29SPEAKER_06: Yeah, because the older brother's processing the idea that I mean the older brother's processing in such a way that, like, I like I've I deserve this, I've done these right things, he doesn't deserve it, you know.
- 21:41SPEAKER_06: He's done these wrong things.
- 21:43SPEAKER_05: And what's the father say to him?
- 21:45SPEAKER_05: Everything I have is yours.
- 21:46SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 21:47SPEAKER_05: You already have it.
- 21:49SPEAKER_05: So what is the older brother needing then?
- 21:52SPEAKER_05: This validation that is so false, like it's such a weird mindset.
- 21:58SPEAKER_05: Like I already Have what the fathers give like it's it's a wild mindset.
- 22:04SPEAKER_05: And I know we all deal with jealousy, and and man, that's not fair.
- 22:08SPEAKER_05: And I would agree, grace isn't fair, and we don't want it to be fair.
- 22:12SPEAKER_05: We don't want it to be fair.
- 22:12SPEAKER_05: That's how I mean the moment it's gonna be fair, we're all in trouble.
- 22:15SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, right.
- 22:17SPEAKER_05: I mean, that's why I mean I I still Max Lukato's book, you know, I think it's called Grace Is Not Fair.
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: I mean, his honest uh assessment of Jeffrey Dahmer.
- 22:28SPEAKER_05: Like it's still, I mean, it's still the most impactful statement when he says it wasn't that um Jeffrey Dahmer, you know, got saved in prison.
- 22:40SPEAKER_05: It wasn't even that Jeffrey Dahmer um got baptized in prison that he was leading a Bible study before he was murdered.
- 22:47SPEAKER_05: What bothers me the most is that the same grace that saved me saved Jeffrey Dahmer.
- 22:53SPEAKER_05: That seems unfair.
- 22:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it's based off of everything you talked about and everything we talk about.
- 23:00SPEAKER_05: We take it from a standpoint of this is what I've done, and because of what I've done, so because of what he's done, he doesn't deserve it.
- 23:09SPEAKER_05: Because of what I do, I do deserve it.
- 23:11SPEAKER_05: Both mindsets are wrong, right?
- 23:14SPEAKER_05: And so it's it's this in a nutshell.
- 23:17SPEAKER_05: What he what the younger brother had done in his rebellion, Grace paid for.
- 23:24SPEAKER_05: What the older brother was living under, Grace also paid for.
- 23:28SPEAKER_05: And that's the that's the you're in one of two camps, man.
- 23:32SPEAKER_05: I mean, you're either welcoming them or you're rejecting them.
- 23:36SPEAKER_05: I mean, that's it.
- 23:39SPEAKER_06: You know, I left Sunday after service thinking like this, thought, like, man, Lord, I hope that there's I could only hope, I would only think after a message like this, that there's a lot of restoration.
- 23:49SPEAKER_06: You know, like that there's a lot of people out there that are holding on to things amongst family members, not amongst co-workers even, or even could be co-workers, but just even you think family members, you know, there's a lot of things you're holding on to.
- 24:00SPEAKER_06: Uh and when you start thinking about the goodness of God in your life, it's easier than for you to extend the goodness of God to other people's lives, because there's, you know, family members, you're not talking to each other, you're not doing this, or you're not doing that, and there's division and reconciliation needs to happen, you know, and it starts with us processing like the goodness of God in our own life so that we can, you know, let go whatever needs to be let go of so that we can extend the goodness to other people as well.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: And so Yeah, and I I th I think it's these kinds of things.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: Or that scripture back in the gospels that said the goodness of God leads many to unto repentance.
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's so many times I don't know about you guys, but I probably heard that scripture taught more on you know, the goodness of God is the or it's about things or stuff.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: You know, and it's like how we interpret it.
- 24:48SPEAKER_05: Oh, we determined blessed, right?
- 24:49SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 24:50SPEAKER_05: If I say I'm blessed, I'm talking about material things.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: But I think the goodness that maybe that scripture is talking about is when they see those kinds of things, the goodness of God and evidence in relational aspects of healings in marriage or healing in a relationship or a family or whatever it is.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: I think those are the things that are probably more impactful than what kind of car I'm driving.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: And so that's the goodness of God that really speaks to people.
- 25:19SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: Profoundly.
- 25:20SPEAKER_06: That mindset alone, like I I'm owed this, gets you in a lot of trouble.
- 25:26SPEAKER_06: Like I I'm I deserve this.
- 25:28SPEAKER_06: I owe I'm owed this.
- 25:29SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
- 25:30SPEAKER_06: Like, man, we gotta let that go.
- 25:31SPEAKER_06: You know, like that's gonna cause nothing but destruction in your life and your relationships.
- 25:36SPEAKER_00: God doesn't owe me anything.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Nothing.
- 25:38SPEAKER_05: Well, and people don't either.
- 25:41SPEAKER_05: That's that's the yeah, it's not so much even a mindset that God owes me, it's that uh you owe me.
- 25:48SPEAKER_05: That's true.
- 25:49SPEAKER_05: Right?
- 25:49SPEAKER_05: Like like you you did something to me, you owe me.
- 25:52SPEAKER_05: You owe me.
- 25:53SPEAKER_05: And so because of that, I'm gonna treat you a certain way.
- 25:56SPEAKER_05: Here, I mean, to me, this is the major, this is it, second Corinthians five, and and we know this, but we've stopped evaluating others from a human point of view.
- 26:04SPEAKER_05: At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view, how differently we see him now, verse 18.
- 26:09SPEAKER_05: And all this is a gift from God who brought us back to himself through Christ, and God has given us this task of reconciling people to him.
- 26:16SPEAKER_05: For God was in Christ, reconciled the world to himself, no longer counting people's sins against them, and he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.
- 26:27SPEAKER_05: So, like it's this understanding, and that to me is where the older brother, I think, missed it.
- 26:33SPEAKER_05: And I think the question, whether we're willing to welcome the prodigal when he comes home.
- 26:38SPEAKER_05: I think the question is whether we're willing to leave our comfort and go looking for him.
- 26:42SPEAKER_05: I think that's the that is the three I'll leave the 99 and I'll find the one.
- 26:50SPEAKER_05: Mathematically, that makes no sense, right?
- 26:53SPEAKER_05: I have all these other coins, but I need to find the one.
- 26:56SPEAKER_05: So when I read verse 11 through 32, it's it's not so much does he come home, it's why didn't you, who are responsible, go find him?
- 27:10SPEAKER_05: So good.
- 27:13SPEAKER_05: If we have the task, I think as of the church, we we so many times we hear the story and we're like, yep, I'm sitting on the front porch waiting for him to return, waiting for him to be in his pig's den, you know, pig sty or whatever.
- 27:30SPEAKER_05: What if what if that's not it?
- 27:32SPEAKER_05: That's what the father does.
- 27:34SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 27:36SPEAKER_05: He's given us the message though, of reconciling people to himself.
- 27:44SPEAKER_05: I mean, I I don't I don't know read that any other way.
- 27:48SPEAKER_05: And and if we don't, we become the older brother.
- 27:52SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: And and you've taught this before to it's a it's a cultural, you know, element, but I think it's not only what the father did that spoke to the older son, but what the father did that spoke to the community that they were living in.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: Because of getting out there before they they have a I can't remember the name of the but where they go out and break clay pots at the edge of the community.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: And then if if you're outside of that, you're not allowed to come into the community.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: And the father made sure he got out there before the community broke the clay pots to where this the younger son would never be accepted into the community.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: And so I think the father was not only teaching the son, but he's also teaching the community.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: And I think that's a powerful point that so many times what we're doing is we're not only teaching this aspect, but we're also teaching the community around us how do we how do we live out, you know, what Jesus has done for us uh in that aspect.
- 28:58SPEAKER_00: I know for me it was this whole God dealing with me about seeing people as Genesis one people or Genesis three people.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Genesis one, we're all created in the image and likeness of God.
- 29:10SPEAKER_00: And Genesis three, man becomes a sinner.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: Humanity has sinned.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: And the Lord, and and to answer what I said earlier is like, why why are you why are you so good to these people?
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: And that's what he said to me.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: He says, You see them as sinners, I see them as created in my image.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: He says, You need you need to have my vision, not yours.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: I was like, that all happened at Walmart and anyway.
- 29:40SPEAKER_05: Good things too happen at Walmart.
- 29:44SPEAKER_05: Well, I I think ultimately that's the um the great revealer is am I willing to go and tell?
- 29:53SPEAKER_05: Or we still view the church mindset as come and see.
- 29:58SPEAKER_05: And that's not in the Bible.
- 30:01SPEAKER_05: It's go and tell.
- 30:03SPEAKER_05: And to me, you know, if you look at Jesus' ministry and we know the stats, we've we've shared them before.
- 30:09SPEAKER_05: Um most Jesus miracles were in the were in the marketplace, his interaction with people in the marketplace who's not in the temple.
- 30:16SPEAKER_05: And so it's like, okay, how how do we eliminate the hour a week Sunday that we have and make that the main thing?
- 30:26SPEAKER_05: And say, no, what we do from here is is important because if if I refuse to do it, I become like the older brother.
- 30:37SPEAKER_05: And now I'm resenting those who aren't like me.
- 30:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 30:41SPEAKER_05: And so now I've made assumptions, so I'm not gonna give them, they probably need a job.
- 30:47SPEAKER_05: They could be out looking for a job.
- 30:48SPEAKER_05: They they probably really don't know.
- 30:50SPEAKER_05: They're probably gonna use, I mean, how many times people say that?
- 30:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 30:53SPEAKER_05: Oh, they're probably gonna use whatever I give them on drugs.
- 30:56SPEAKER_05: I mean, that's an assumption.
- 30:57SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 30:57SPEAKER_05: I don't know that unless we're stopping and asking, every person's asking for money.
- 31:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 31:02SPEAKER_05: We don't know that.
- 31:03SPEAKER_05: That's an assumption based off of an older brother thinking.
- 31:07SPEAKER_06: I mean, you think when you lose something as valuable as a lost coin, how much how many resources you use, uh you you use whatever you have to find that loose coin, and probably ninety percent of what you're using doesn't even find it.
- 31:18SPEAKER_06: It's that one thing.
- 31:19SPEAKER_06: You know what I'm saying?
- 31:20SPEAKER_06: Like you're using all of these resources and then it's a lot of people.
- 31:22SPEAKER_05: It's funny because I I lose things a lot.
- 31:24SPEAKER_05: I'm surprised.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: Oh, you do lose them too.
- 31:27SPEAKER_05: I mean, I think I mean keys.
- 31:29SPEAKER_05: I mean, I have air I have I have the Apple, whatever that air tag is air tag on too.
- 31:36SPEAKER_05: I got two of them.
- 31:36SPEAKER_05: One on my wallet and one on my phone.
- 31:39SPEAKER_05: I mean, but I remember specifically.
- 31:44SPEAKER_05: Well, she should have it on her phone already.
- 31:46SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:49SPEAKER_06: Sorry to interrupt you.
- 31:50SPEAKER_06: Your phone is an air tag.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: We were all looking for our phone last night.
- 31:54SPEAKER_06: We got she's feeding you a bunch of lines, Pastor Mike.
- 31:58SPEAKER_05: Oh man.
- 31:59SPEAKER_05: No, but I remember I mean you remember the the keys I lost.
- 32:02SPEAKER_05: I mean the box that away.
- 32:05SPEAKER_05: Oh, it was a wall for a line.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: That was kind of not really your fault, though.
- 32:09SPEAKER_05: That was like I mean, I remember like I could, but there's one other thing that I lost one time, and I was, I mean, I we might have been, I think we were just married, but I lost my checkbook.
- 32:22SPEAKER_05: And I most people ain't gonna know what it is.
- 32:25SPEAKER_05: But I was so and then I'm like calling, I'm like, I need new checks.
- 32:29SPEAKER_05: And they're like, well, we'll have to cancel each check.
- 32:31SPEAKER_05: It costs this much money to cancel the checks to give you new ones, and I'm like, my good, where could this be?
- 32:37SPEAKER_05: I mean, I'm racking my brains.
- 32:38SPEAKER_05: And it was in your parents' couch that at Christmas time I was laying on the couch after.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: Why did you have your checkbook with you?
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: No, you're gonna pay somebody that day.
- 32:49SPEAKER_05: No idea.
- 32:49SPEAKER_05: I just remember the stress of losing that and like how much joy it stole from enjoying you know the day.
- 32:58SPEAKER_05: I'm pretty sure we had.
- 33:00SPEAKER_02: I don't even remember that.
- 33:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know.
- 33:02SPEAKER_05: I was joyful, not stressing.
- 33:04SPEAKER_05: You like a duck, it just rolls off your back.
- 33:06SPEAKER_05: I know, I know.
- 33:07SPEAKER_05: You you can lose something like that's all right, I just ordered a new one.
- 33:11SPEAKER_02: That's not necessarily true, but I don't lose things very often.
- 33:14SPEAKER_05: No, I do.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: But what's you know what's the best part?
- 33:17SPEAKER_02: Well, not the best part, but as something I do think we don't do very well.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: And each um in each parable, the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the parable of the sun, it all ends in a party.
- 33:28SPEAKER_02: Or somebody rejoicing.
- 33:29SPEAKER_02: And I don't think we do that well.
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: Like um when sinners come home, like we could be like the older brother and be like, What?
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's not you didn't really change, you're not really saved, or whatever, instead of rejoicing that someone comes in.
- 33:41SPEAKER_02: Like I think Christians as a whole, like Big C church, I don't know that we rejoice with people very well anymore.
- 33:48SPEAKER_06: No, that's a good point.
- 33:49SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: And it all ends in a party.
- 33:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 33:52SPEAKER_06: You know, you just mentioned uh Kelly, you don't lose much.
- 33:55SPEAKER_06: And I had this thought, you can only l you only lose what's valuable to you.
- 34:00unknown: Right.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: Are you saying nothing's valuable to me?
- 34:02SPEAKER_02: Maybe not.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: I mean it's like my children and my husband.
- 34:05SPEAKER_02: Like everything else, you can rebuy it.
- 34:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 34:07SPEAKER_06: Whatever.
- 34:08SPEAKER_06: But it may be think, you know, just what you're saying, like the only thing, you know, I mean, if is what is valuable to us also valuable to the father.
- 34:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 34:15SPEAKER_06: If it's not true.
- 34:16SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know you guys probably don't care anything about a Bobby Knight basketball, right?
- 34:20SPEAKER_05: Oh, but like to me, it's like I I remember the day I got it.
- 34:24SPEAKER_02: If you stole the Bobby Knight basketball out of Jamie's office, you need to return it now.
- 34:28SPEAKER_02: We'll forgive you and throw a party.
- 34:30SPEAKER_05: Yes, yes.
- 34:31SPEAKER_05: Grace is extended.
- 34:32SPEAKER_05: No, I mean, I think it's important.
- 34:34SPEAKER_05: I think it's important that that you know, that you know, it's noted that the staff got me a new one, and it's it's also important.
- 34:41SPEAKER_05: It's not the same, but it's like, man, like you feel like something was taken from you know what I mean?
- 34:48SPEAKER_05: Like, and so like it's it has my attention, but it's it's value.
- 34:52SPEAKER_05: I agree with that.
- 34:53SPEAKER_05: Like what we put value in, and I know I mean Bobby Knight's dead, you know what I mean?
- 34:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean it's more valuable when you're dead.
- 35:00SPEAKER_05: It's yeah, I mean, it's just more of a you know, I do lose my car in the parking lot often.
- 35:07SPEAKER_05: Some things you're posting in your head.
- 35:14SPEAKER_05: I mean, you are part is you forgot what she was driving.
- 35:17SPEAKER_03: I did not forget what I was in the car.
- 35:19SPEAKER_06: Are you pretty familiar with the target parking lot?
- 35:21SPEAKER_02: Yes, I park in the same spot, but yesterday was a little different.
