- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Let's Talk is proudly presented by attorney Frank Walker. Real talk,
- 0:29Speaker 2: real experience, real results. FrankWalkerLaw.com. Let the conversation begin on
- 0:35Speaker 2: Let's Talk.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen.
- 0:38Speaker 4: This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk. I have only
- 0:44Speaker 4: one of my co-hosts in the building right now, and
- 0:47Speaker 4: that's Miss Lisa Odie, the football queen.
- 0:49Speaker 5: The one that you always want to fire. Somehow I
- 0:53Speaker 5: just keep showing back up.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Well.
- 0:55Speaker 4: That's because I haven't officially fired you yet.
- 1:00Speaker 3: I'm just tempted.
- 1:01Speaker 5: Oh, no, I know, right.
- 1:02Speaker 3: I'm not firing you today because it's just me and you.
- 1:05Speaker 5: Yeah, and just because your Vikings are undefeated. And my
- 1:08Speaker 5: Packers did win yesterday.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Oh, but you're not undefeated, though.
- 1:12Speaker 5: Well, that's not what I was trying to communicate here.
- 1:16Speaker 5: I'm communicating that we won a game.
- 1:18Speaker 3: What is your record, though? What is the record?
- 1:21Speaker 5: Let's move on, shall we?
- 1:22Speaker 3: No, I'm just... That's part of the show, Matt, right?
- 1:26Speaker 6: Here's my question.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Oh, here we go.
- 1:29Speaker 6: I don't have much voice, I'm sorry.
- 1:31Speaker 7: If Carl had to talk for 55 minutes by himself.
- 1:36Speaker 6: Could he do it?
- 1:37Speaker 5: I think he could.
- 1:38Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:39Speaker 7: If we just pushed record and walked away and came
- 1:42Speaker 7: back in an hour.
- 1:43Speaker 5: You'd have a show.
- 1:44Speaker 3: What would have happened?
- 1:45Speaker 5: Now, whether it made sense or not and, you know,
- 1:49Speaker 5: like had some real meat to it, that's a whole
- 1:53Speaker 5: different thing.
- 1:53Speaker 6: I mean, would he have to debate himself?
- 1:55Speaker 5: I guess he would.
- 1:59Speaker 4: I would say my hardest thing is not firing Lisa.
- 2:02Speaker 4: I wouldn't be able to fire her. She'd be already fired.
- 2:05Speaker 6: You'd be out of people to fire you. You'd have
- 2:07Speaker 6: to fire yourself.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 2:09Speaker 5: As they say in the South, bless your heart. Bless
- 2:12Speaker 5: your heart.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Whatever. It'll be all right. All right.
- 2:16Speaker 4: So I want to say this before we even jump
- 2:24Speaker 4: into a topic.
- 2:25Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Am I the only one who thinks the NFL today
- 2:30Speaker 4: is like it seems different, it feels different?
- 2:36Speaker 5: In what manner?
- 2:39Speaker 4: Let's say, well, maybe just players. Just the things that
- 2:42Speaker 4: you're hearing about particular players. Like they've done this or they're...
- 2:48Speaker 4: I don't know. You mean accomplishments? Not accomplishments, but things
- 2:52Speaker 4: that they're doing off the field.
- 2:54Speaker 5: Behaviors.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Behaviors, types of things. I don't know if.
- 3:02Speaker 4: Back in the day, as we say, if you did
- 3:06Speaker 4: something like anything that would be notable in the media
- 3:11Speaker 4: that is a bad thing, you're either fined. or suspended
- 3:16Speaker 4: for a game or something. But I don't know if,
- 3:21Speaker 4: even if you do something on the field, I'm not
- 3:23Speaker 4: sure if I'm seeing actions taken for the consequences of
- 3:30Speaker 4: things that are done.
- 3:31Speaker 5: The right punishments distributed for things that are.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Yeah, I just don't see it. And I think that's
- 3:36Speaker 4: one of the reasons why part of, I say older players,
- 3:42Speaker 4: don't really have a desire to watch the game today.
- 3:49Speaker 5: Because of what you're witnessing from the players?
- 3:51Speaker 4: Yeah, because what you see from the players, the celebration
- 3:55Speaker 4: of yourself on a play, and I know everybody celebrates,
- 4:01Speaker 4: but I think the celebrations today are so solo, so
- 4:05Speaker 4: about me, and nothing about the team, really.
- 4:10Speaker 3: And it drives me crazy.
- 4:12Speaker 5: You know, I think I'm going to boil it down
- 4:15Speaker 5: to comparing, you know, back when you were in the
- 4:17Speaker 5: NFL and to today's NFL. And I think the one
- 4:21Speaker 5: word that comes to mind is, of course, money. And
- 4:24Speaker 5: I think that at your time, during your time, there
- 4:28Speaker 5: wasn't as many, and you can correct me if I'm wrong,
- 4:33Speaker 5: the differences between pay and players, between the stars and
- 4:37Speaker 5: the people that weren't, you know, that were on the
- 4:40Speaker 5: second string, third string, were not as extreme as they
- 4:43Speaker 5: are now. Am I right? Like there wasn't millions of
- 4:45Speaker 5: dollars at stake if this star player was suspended for,
- 4:50Speaker 5: you know, whatever they did in the past game or
- 4:53Speaker 5: the present game. And so the investment is huge for
- 5:00Speaker 5: these teams, and they are a little more lenient and
- 5:04Speaker 5: willing to overlook some of these shenanigans because of their
- 5:07Speaker 5: investments in these players. Because don't you feel like the
- 5:10Speaker 5: ones you're talking about are your superstar players? Yes. That are,
- 5:15Speaker 5: you know, getting out of line in whatever way, whether
- 5:18Speaker 5: it's on the field or off the field. And so
- 5:20Speaker 5: I feel like because of the money... you know, that
- 5:25Speaker 5: that's on the line there, you know, you've got people
- 5:28Speaker 5: coming into the stadium that want to see that these
- 5:30Speaker 5: players play. They want to see the star players play.
- 5:32Speaker 5: They don't want to see the backup players play.
- 5:33Speaker 3: That's true.
- 5:34Speaker 5: And so whenever you have a player that probably did
- 5:37Speaker 5: something that was deserving of, of maybe being suspended for
- 5:40Speaker 5: a game or two, it's not going to happen because
- 5:43Speaker 5: you're going to have some disgruntled fans.
- 5:45Speaker 3: So are you, so.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Are you saying to that, if I do something today, the, the,
- 5:54Speaker 4: it's more likely you'll find me.
- 5:57Speaker 6: Okay.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Then you would, you know, say, okay, you're out for
- 6:02Speaker 3: three games.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Sure. I believe that's this.
- 6:05Speaker 3: And four games without pay.
- 6:06Speaker 4: Right. You know, cause that would have been the other thing.
- 6:08Speaker 4: If you, if you got put out and you didn't play,
- 6:11Speaker 4: you didn't get paid.
- 6:12Speaker 5: Well, and that's the more severe fine than just being
- 6:15Speaker 5: fined and being able to play.
- 6:16Speaker 6: Right.
- 6:17Speaker 5: You see what I'm saying?
- 6:18Speaker 6: Yes, absolutely.
- 6:18Speaker 5: And the fines are not as, you know, you think about,
- 6:21Speaker 5: you hear these amounts, they're just a drop in the
- 6:24Speaker 5: bucket compared to their salary. It's a slap on the wrist.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Yes, that's all.
- 6:29Speaker 5: What do you think, Matt?
- 6:30Speaker 6: I think there's, I.
- 6:33Speaker 7: Think some of this has to do with the shift
- 6:36Speaker 7: from everything being on traditional media. to now you've got
- 6:41Speaker 7: streaming services, now you've got online, social media platforms.
- 6:46Speaker 6: All that stuff.
- 6:47Speaker 7: So it's like, to me, when I watch, it's like
- 6:53Speaker 7: we're allowing more of this entertainment kind of, hey, look
- 6:57Speaker 7: at me stuff that goes on on the field because
- 7:01Speaker 7: it's like the league understands that we're trying to get
- 7:04Speaker 7: as many viewers as possible.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 7:06Speaker 7: So we're going to let things happen that might help
- 7:08Speaker 7: the algorithm. when somebody goes to find this later. I mean,
- 7:13Speaker 7: it just kind of feels that same way to me.
- 7:17Speaker 4: To your point, do we see the NFL being the
- 7:23Speaker 4: most viewed, most want-to-see sport than any other sport? Would
- 7:34Speaker 4: football be the number one sport for viewers today? If
- 7:37Speaker 4: you said, what sport would you pick that you want
- 7:40Speaker 4: to see, that you wouldn't want to watch?
- 7:42Speaker 3: Is football the number one?
- 7:44Speaker 6: I would think.
- 7:44Speaker 5: I think so, too. I mean, I know soccer is
- 7:47Speaker 5: gaining some ground on traditional football.
- 7:50Speaker 6: I mean, basketball is dropping in numbers.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Yes.
- 7:54Speaker 6: I mean, was it last season?
- 7:55Speaker 7: I think they said the viewership for the NBA was
- 7:57Speaker 7: down like 50% or something like that.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Again.
- 7:59Speaker 5: It's dropping again.
- 8:00Speaker 4: Yes.
- 8:02Speaker 3: We know that there's a person that's causing that, but
- 8:04Speaker 3: I'm— Well— You can't blame that on one player. I
- 8:09Speaker 3: won't go there. I can't.
- 8:10Speaker 6: I bet he was on a helicopter ride.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:13Speaker 6: I mean, I would think so.
- 8:15Speaker 7: And that's the other thing, too, that the NFL worries
- 8:18Speaker 7: me about, though, is they're moving to this system where
- 8:22Speaker 7: you've got Monday night games, you've got Thursday night games,
- 8:25Speaker 7: you've got Sunday games. And sometimes, like, Friday and Saturday
- 8:29Speaker 7: are in play now as well. Right.
- 8:31Speaker 6: Why did we get to that? There's only 32 teams.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 8:36Speaker 7: Why do we need five days a week to play football?
- 8:40Speaker 4: I do think you can push it out as much
- 8:44Speaker 4: as you want, but you can overdo it.
- 8:47Speaker 3: Because people, I just don't think people want to, they
- 8:52Speaker 3: don't want to be flooded with it.
- 8:54Speaker 4: But again, okay, so it's a Packer game.
- 8:58Speaker 3: You're going to watch it regardless.
- 9:00Speaker 4: And I think that fan base, not that particular one,
- 9:03Speaker 4: but just the fan base of football and your team,
- 9:07Speaker 4: if your team's.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Playing, are you, you know.
- 9:09Speaker 5: And that draws enough viewership, even if it's just the
- 9:11Speaker 5: fan base of the two teams playing, unless they're, you know,
- 9:14Speaker 5: two really, really bad teams.
- 9:16Speaker 4: But those fans still will watch it.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Yeah, they'll watch it.
- 9:19Speaker 6: You're right. Absolutely.
- 9:21Speaker 5: And I like what Matt said about the algorithm because
- 9:23Speaker 5: it reminds me of something my grandmother always told me
- 9:26Speaker 5: when I was younger. Talk good about me, talk bad
- 9:28Speaker 5: about me, but just talk about me. And so NFL,
- 9:32Speaker 5: whether it's good publicity or, like you said, the bad publicity,
- 9:36Speaker 5: it's still publicity. It still draws people in. They still
- 9:40Speaker 5: are curious. They want to see, you know, what did
- 9:42Speaker 5: that player do to deserve that fine? And so, you know,
- 9:46Speaker 5: you're right. The social media mix part of it has
- 9:48Speaker 5: just– Change the face of the game and the way
- 9:51Speaker 5: we watch it.
- 9:52Speaker 7: Because it used to be it was whatever was live
- 9:55Speaker 7: on TV, whatever's live on the radio.
- 9:57Speaker 5: Right.
- 9:58Speaker 6: And then after that, it's whatever TV. radio, and the.
- 10:01Speaker 7: Newspapers decided were the stories they were going to pick
- 10:04Speaker 7: up and talk about after game day.
- 10:06Speaker 5: After.
- 10:07Speaker 7: Now, I mean, everybody's got a podcast, as we're sitting here.
- 10:12Speaker 7: Everybody's got a podcast. Everybody's got a YouTube channel.
- 10:14Speaker 3: You're right.
- 10:15Speaker 7: So everybody's pulling different things and talking about stuff.
- 10:18Speaker 5: I mean, it's and you can have here's another interesting
- 10:21Speaker 5: part of this. You can have any argument, whether it's right, wrong,
- 10:25Speaker 5: you know, up, down, whatever. And you can find some news,
- 10:29Speaker 5: some some, like you said, podcasts. somebody, something, out where
- 10:32Speaker 5: to support your argument, whether it's the right argument or
- 10:35Speaker 5: the wrong argument.
- 10:36Speaker 3: And if you find one, you're sold. It only takes one.
- 10:40Speaker 5: This is the truth. This is gospel.
- 10:42Speaker 4: And if it's on television and I'm saying something and
- 10:47Speaker 4: somebody says it on television, I'm locked.
- 10:51Speaker 3: There's no way you can convince me that I'm not right.
- 10:53Speaker 5: I saw it.
- 10:54Speaker 3: It must be true. I saw it on the internet.
- 10:56Speaker 7: And this is the thing to go full circle to
- 10:58Speaker 7: your first question. As individual as the content has become
- 11:02Speaker 7: for us as the consumers, now you have all these
- 11:07Speaker 7: individual actions from players out there just trying to, you know,
- 11:12Speaker 7: give you.
- 11:12Speaker 3: There you go. And I really do.
- 11:14Speaker 4: I really think that that push by the individual player
- 11:19Speaker 4: to establish himself in a sense, separate from the team
- 11:24Speaker 4: and quote solo and relevant to the fan base, to
- 11:29Speaker 4: the public, to the media, all of those kinds of things.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Is that for the reason to get paid?
- 11:39Speaker 4: Because if you're that player, you've got the media, you
- 11:42Speaker 4: got the attention, you got the fan base, You're a
- 11:47Speaker 4: pretty good player, maybe not even the best player at
- 11:51Speaker 4: your position, maybe not even the best player on your team,
- 11:54Speaker 4: but you are one of them. But you're going to
- 11:56Speaker 4: make tons and tons of money because of the relevance
- 12:01Speaker 4: of what the media thinks about you.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Well, I mean, and another thing, when social media kind
- 12:07Speaker 5: of monetized, like you can monetize your content now. I mean,
- 12:11Speaker 5: you think about the, you know, whatever these, excuse me,
- 12:14Speaker 5: players throw out there, you know, for clicks. the more
- 12:17Speaker 5: clicks they get, the more money they make. So that's
- 12:19Speaker 5: just in addition to what they're making on the field.
- 12:21Speaker 5: So for some players that aren't the star players, it's
- 12:25Speaker 5: almost to their advantage to have some, you know, questionable
- 12:30Speaker 5: behaviors on the field or off the field because then
- 12:33Speaker 5: it draws in, like I said, good or bad, you're
- 12:35Speaker 5: still getting the attention. And, you know, like I said,
- 12:38Speaker 5: this world we live in today.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Attention is money.
- 12:40Speaker 5: Yeah, attention is money.
- 12:41Speaker 3: There you go.
- 12:42Speaker 7: It is. I like the fact that, especially, like, players
- 12:46Speaker 7: like you, Sterling, Joe Montana. I think about Steve. I mean,
- 12:51Speaker 7: like Troy Aikman, you go back in time. It's like
- 12:56Speaker 7: players had an allegiance to the team that drafted them.
- 12:59Speaker 7: And they, a lot of times stayed there. They may
- 13:01Speaker 7: have wound up one or two other teams for the
- 13:03Speaker 7: last couple of years, whatever. But, you know, when you
- 13:07Speaker 7: used to think about teams, it wasn't just like that
- 13:09Speaker 7: one or two star players. I mean, if you had
- 13:11Speaker 7: a favorite team, You could rattle off 8, 10, 12
- 13:14Speaker 7: players on that roster because they were all there every
- 13:17Speaker 7: single year.
- 13:18Speaker 5: Every single year, almost to retirement.
- 13:20Speaker 4: And to your point about playing on one team, you
- 13:26Speaker 4: could have never told me that I was not going
- 13:28Speaker 4: to retire from the Vikings.
- 13:29Speaker 6: You couldn't have. I believe it.
- 13:31Speaker 4: And if I had not gotten cut, I would have–
- 13:35Speaker 4: that was going to be my last season, and I
- 13:37Speaker 4: would have stayed there. And what happens is, you know,
- 13:41Speaker 4: whether it's money, whether it's whatever the case may be,
- 13:45Speaker 4: they want to push you off. Back in the day,
- 13:47Speaker 4: they'd push you off late in your career, and you'd
- 13:51Speaker 4: go play somewhere else, and.
- 13:52Speaker 3: You'd kind of have to start up.
- 13:52Speaker 5: They still do that to a degree, don't they?
- 13:54Speaker 6: They still do that. I feel like it's better than
- 13:56Speaker 6: some of the other sports.
- 13:57Speaker 5: You're right. You're right.
- 13:58Speaker 4: Maybe so, and– And I can say I'm still a
- 14:03Speaker 4: little bit angry about my situation. You know, I feel
- 14:06Speaker 4: like I don't know anybody else that the Vikings had
- 14:09Speaker 4: done that to during my time. Now, that doesn't mean
- 14:13Speaker 4: that they didn't.
- 14:14Speaker 5: Right.
- 14:14Speaker 4: But literally, you just did not want to even talk
- 14:20Speaker 4: to me about a contract, you.
- 14:23Speaker 3: Just, and then you wait.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Then you wait until the very week of the camp,
- 14:31Speaker 4: we're coming into camp, and you let me go. Why
- 14:34Speaker 4: did you let me go at the end of the season?
- 14:35Speaker 4: Why didn't you let me go mid-summer? You're letting me
- 14:38Speaker 4: go while teams have already drafted players, having a week
- 14:44Speaker 4: or so to look at them, and then you're going
- 14:47Speaker 4: to let me go?
- 14:48Speaker 3: You're not setting me up for success, for sure.
- 14:51Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a tough spot to be in, I'm sure.
- 14:53Speaker 4: And I think that old school actions from organizations like that,
- 15:00Speaker 4: I think that's where a lot of players have their dislike.
- 15:06Speaker 4: They end up with a dislike for the team or
- 15:08Speaker 4: maybe even the owner that they played for. And mine
- 15:11Speaker 4: is solely for the general manager role.
- 15:16Speaker 5: At the time.
- 15:17Speaker 3: At the time.
- 15:17Speaker 6: Right, right.
- 15:18Speaker 4: You know, that was there. Mike Lynn, I'll give his name.
- 15:21Speaker 4: And he was just a bad dude as a whole.
- 15:25Speaker 4: You should throw.
- 15:26Speaker 5: A little shade here. I hope Mike Lynn's not listening
- 15:31Speaker 5: to the podcast.
- 15:32Speaker 3: That's okay. Go ahead.
- 15:32Speaker 2: You know what?
- 15:33Speaker 6: I hope he is. That's good.
- 15:37Speaker 4: It was, no, I mean, he just, it was just
- 15:39Speaker 4: one of those kind of situations where it was power.
- 15:42Speaker 4: He enjoyed the power of you coming in as, quote,
- 15:46Speaker 4: a player who's had a great last season and you're
- 15:50Speaker 4: ready to up your contract or your contract's up and
- 15:53Speaker 4: you're ready to get paid.
- 15:55Speaker 3: He's not trying to work with you. He's not on
- 15:58Speaker 3: that side.
- 15:58Speaker 5: Was he hired for that specific purpose? Was he a
- 16:01Speaker 5: hatchet man, so to speak?
- 16:02Speaker 4: He ended up being, and I think he's passed anyway,
- 16:04Speaker 4: but I think he originally was– like literally the top
- 16:11Speaker 4: guy in the building other than the owners.
- 16:14Speaker 3: He was like, and I think he was part owner.
- 16:17Speaker 4: He was part of like, I think there were three
- 16:19Speaker 4: or four different owners, but he was like in that deal.
- 16:24Speaker 4: And so if you're the owner and you got a
- 16:26Speaker 4: guy who's fighting to keep you, keep your money, you
- 16:31Speaker 4: got nothing to say.
- 16:33Speaker 3: And we have no access to you. You know, we
- 16:36Speaker 3: have no access to the owners.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Now, maybe today you hear and you see owners walking around.
- 16:44Speaker 3: Players might know who they were. We didn't have that
- 16:46Speaker 3: luxury back then.
- 16:49Speaker 5: They were just those people that showed up in the
- 16:51Speaker 5: box on Sunday to watch you play.
- 16:52Speaker 3: Yes, and you didn't see. Past judgment. Yes.
- 16:55Speaker 7: That's because you didn't play for Dallas. If you'd been
- 16:57Speaker 7: in Dallas, you would have seen Terry Jones every day.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Yes, yes.
- 17:01Speaker 4: And that's the far side on the other end of
- 17:05Speaker 4: it that you, like, dude, like, go sit in the
- 17:09Speaker 4: box and watch the game.
- 17:12Speaker 6: Well, have you seen this woman that's the owner of
- 17:14Speaker 6: the Indianapolis Colts? No, no.
- 17:17Speaker 5: She's pretty hands-on, isn't she?
- 17:19Speaker 6: She's on the.
- 17:19Speaker 7: Sidelines, like, talking game plan and stuff with folks.
- 17:22Speaker 6: Oh, wow. You don't have to look into that.
- 17:25Speaker 3: I do.
- 17:27Speaker 5: That's a good topic for a future reference. But, yeah,
- 17:30Speaker 5: I think that just, I want to say this, and
- 17:33Speaker 5: I don't want Carl to think, you know, to get too,
- 17:37Speaker 5: his ego inflated.
- 17:38Speaker 6: You're about to get fired.
- 17:39Speaker 5: But, you know, I think there was an air of class.
- 17:43Speaker 5: And I don't want to say this generation's classless. But
- 17:46Speaker 5: back then, they just carried themselves differently. Maybe it was
- 17:50Speaker 5: the lack of, like you said, media that we have today.
- 17:53Speaker 5: You're on camera 24-7 when you're any type of celebrity, athlete, actor, actress,
- 18:00Speaker 5: whatever it is. But during that time, they just, I
- 18:05Speaker 5: don't know, they carried themselves differently. It was a whole
- 18:08Speaker 5: different atmosphere when you thought about NFL football.
- 18:12Speaker 4: Well, and let me say this, because I agree with you.
- 18:18Speaker 4: If I were to ask a, well, let me rephrase it.
- 18:21Speaker 4: If I would think anybody would just show up, drive
- 18:26Speaker 4: from somewhere, show up to be on my show. In
- 18:30Speaker 4: this generation, they're not going to be on my show
- 18:34Speaker 4: unless I pay them. But yet, you take a Hall
- 18:38Speaker 4: of Fame great receiver, Sterling Sharp, who would just, on
- 18:41Speaker 4: his way home, would stop in and come in and
- 18:45Speaker 4: had been on the show a couple weeks before.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Right. And just can't... That guy is not.
- 18:52Speaker 5: Right.
- 18:52Speaker 3: I don't see that guy today.
- 18:54Speaker 5: He comes from that generation. It's like Christy Martin coming in.
- 18:57Speaker 3: To the studio.
- 18:58Speaker 4: Yes.
- 18:58Speaker 5: You know, just the whole attitude of, you know, we'll
- 19:05Speaker 5: help you out, you help us out. It was like
- 19:08Speaker 5: you can tell that even though you guys played, when
- 19:10Speaker 5: you interact, you and Sterling, when we're on the air,
- 19:12Speaker 5: you can tell that you guys, even though you were
- 19:14Speaker 5: on different teams, you still bonded. Like you still have
- 19:17Speaker 5: that bond of we were playing in the same era
- 19:19Speaker 5: in the NFL. Yes. And it's just a different, I
- 19:23Speaker 5: don't know, a different vibe that you get from older players.
- 19:26Speaker 5: Don't you think?
- 19:29Speaker 6: The big phrase, it's just a game.
- 19:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:32Speaker 7: And I know I heard him say that. If he
- 19:34Speaker 7: didn't say it last week, he's definitely said it when he's.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Been on before.
- 19:37Speaker 5: Yes.
- 19:37Speaker 7: It's like no matter how serious it is, knowing that
- 19:41Speaker 7: you've been a professional player, you still have to remember
- 19:44Speaker 7: it's just a game. Yeah.
- 19:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:46Speaker 6: And I don't know.
- 19:47Speaker 3: And he treated it. He treated it.
- 19:50Speaker 4: If anybody I played against, and even within the Pro Bowls,
- 19:56Speaker 4: it was him who really just played it as a game. Yeah.
- 20:00Speaker 6: Like, obviously, it's a job.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a job. It's a paid career.
- 20:04Speaker 6: It's a paid career.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:05Speaker 6: But it's a game. It's entertainment.
- 20:08Speaker 3: It's a fan base.
- 20:09Speaker 4: At the end of the day, yes. Yes. And he
- 20:13Speaker 4: for sure showed that in his play and his personality.
- 20:18Speaker 4: And again, you're talking about, again, a Hall of Fame guy.
- 20:23Speaker 4: Just popping in, just to interact with us on the show,
- 20:28Speaker 4: just for the fun of talking. Just to take over
- 20:31Speaker 4: the show. Yeah, just to take over the show.
- 20:33Speaker 6: Just for the love of the game.
- 20:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:35Speaker 6: And to fire you.
- 20:37Speaker 5: And, yes, exactly.
- 20:39Speaker 3: My point exactly.
- 20:41Speaker 4: The problem is I can't let him get into the
- 20:47Speaker 4: seat because I'm getting fired.
- 20:49Speaker 3: Lisa's getting hired up.
- 20:52Speaker 5: I'm just looking out for job security, buddy. Whoever's in
- 20:54Speaker 5: that seat, I'll be nice to.
- 20:56Speaker 3: All right.
- 20:58Speaker 4: WVU Marshall.
- 20:59Speaker 7: Oh, boy.
- 21:01Speaker 5: Rough weekend, right? You want to start with WVU? Let's
- 21:04Speaker 5: start there.
- 21:05Speaker 7: Yes.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Give us some numbers.
- 21:06Speaker 7: All right.
- 21:07Speaker 6: All right.
- 21:07Speaker 5: So I've got some numbers to throw at you. Of course,
- 21:10Speaker 5: it was just a shootout, basically, between the two teams. But,
- 21:15Speaker 5: you know, WVU ended up with the L. They lost
- 21:18Speaker 5: to Iowa State, 45-42. And it's something that I thought
- 21:22Speaker 5: of you during the game, Carl, because– What I saw
- 21:26Speaker 5: on the field was something that you brought up. You know,
- 21:29Speaker 5: we pretty much have a dynamic, solid offense to a degree,
- 21:33Speaker 5: but it's being dragged down by this defense that's collapsing. And,
- 21:39Speaker 5: you know, these costly self-inflicted mistakes, I mean, they just,
- 21:43Speaker 5: you know, they surrendered. Listen to this. The defense surrendered
- 21:46Speaker 5: 577 total yards in the game. 265 of those yards
- 21:48Speaker 5: were rushing.
- 21:52Speaker 6: Okay?
- 21:53Speaker 5: That's an issue.
- 21:54Speaker 3: That's an issue.
- 21:54Speaker 6: That's a problem. That's a problem.
- 21:56Speaker 5: And we've even said this. You know, now it brings
- 21:59Speaker 5: up the point, and you guys correct me if you
- 22:01Speaker 5: think I'm wrong, but maybe Virginia was overrated. Maybe they
- 22:05Speaker 5: were ranked and shouldn't have been ranked. I mean, because
- 22:07Speaker 5: I'm thinking that win, we were like, we kind of
- 22:11Speaker 5: hung our hat on it. Like, oh, my gosh, we're
- 22:12Speaker 5: going to be, you know, we're going to be this team.
- 22:13Speaker 5: We're going to be a force to reckon with. And
- 22:16Speaker 5: it's not turning out that way.
- 22:20Speaker 4: I'll say this about predictions. I think that they are,
- 22:25Speaker 4: there are a lot of times they're really close and
- 22:28Speaker 4: a lot of times they're even correct. But what you
- 22:32Speaker 4: don't really know is.
- 22:35Speaker 3: Really what's coming out of the locker room when they
- 22:37Speaker 3: hit the field.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Right. And I think that is what's happening now with WVU.
- 22:46Speaker 4: The guys that are coming out of the locker room,
- 22:49Speaker 4: They are not playing at what the expectation for them
- 22:55Speaker 4: has been. They're just not– why, how, what's the reason?
- 22:59Speaker 5: They're not in a good mental space, are they?
- 23:01Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 23:01Speaker 3: I just don't see it.
- 23:02Speaker 7: Well, it's a little easier, I think, to speculate in
- 23:05Speaker 7: the NFL because you've seen a lot of these players playing.
- 23:08Speaker 6: For a while through college and into the pros.
- 23:10Speaker 7: Yes. I think with college, with this transfer portal, I mean,
- 23:15Speaker 7: you're talking– 18, 19, 20, 21-year-olds. I mean, some of
- 23:18Speaker 7: these kids you've only got a year or two tape on.
- 23:20Speaker 7: I think we may think they're this player, but then
- 23:23Speaker 7: they wound up in a new school this year, and then, oh,
- 23:26Speaker 7: they weren't anywhere close to what you thought.
- 23:29Speaker 6: Yes.
- 23:30Speaker 3: And I'll say— It's a gamble.
- 23:31Speaker 6: It's a gamble. You don't know.
- 23:32Speaker 3: It's always a gamble.
- 23:33Speaker 6: It is.
- 23:34Speaker 5: And you're spending a lot of money on that gamble, too. Like,
- 23:37Speaker 5: you're losing NIL. Right.
- 23:39Speaker 4: My thing, too, to this— Okay, so I'm in Minnesota,
- 23:44Speaker 4: and Pete Carroll comes in, and I've said this before,
- 23:47Speaker 4: and he puts in the bump and run, and my
- 23:49Speaker 4: career changes.
- 23:50Speaker 3: He doesn't come. I don't see my career being that.
- 23:55Speaker 4: If I don't have him and go somewhere else and play... Like,
- 23:59Speaker 4: when I went to the Saints, we weren't really playing
- 24:01Speaker 4: a lot of man-to-man. We played zone, and I knew
- 24:04Speaker 4: that it was not my thing. And so when I
- 24:08Speaker 4: say that is, a lot of times.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Where the coach is, you know, the coach are– if
- 24:16Speaker 4: you come in and just put something in and you've
- 24:19Speaker 4: got– let's say you put zone in and you've got
- 24:22Speaker 4: four guys who are used to playing man-to-man.
- 24:26Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:27Speaker 3: You've got a problem.
- 24:28Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly.
- 24:29Speaker 3: But you believe now– I believe.
- 24:31Speaker 4: That coaches now– buy into the fact that my offense
- 24:35Speaker 4: worked because it worked somewhere else.
- 24:38Speaker 3: But those guys could play zone.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:41Speaker 3: We don't even want to play zone.
- 24:43Speaker 5: Right.
- 24:44Speaker 3: And you're trying to make.
- 24:45Speaker 6: Us do it.
- 24:47Speaker 5: Sometimes you have to make adjustments to what your players
- 24:49Speaker 5: are comfortable with rather than what you want.
- 24:51Speaker 3: And I don't know if coaches are coaching that way.
- 24:54Speaker 3: You know?
- 24:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:56Speaker 4: And... I'm the worst coach to be able to make
- 24:59Speaker 4: that assessment, but I'm just saying, to me, I think
- 25:02Speaker 4: that trying to do– and I know what I tried
- 25:05Speaker 4: to do at West Virginia State was play that same
- 25:10Speaker 4: exact thing like Pete Carroll.
- 25:12Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 25:14Speaker 4: My process was I had two guys, or really about
- 25:17Speaker 4: three guys, that I knew, good size, good.
- 25:21Speaker 3: Speed, strong, that could play man-to-man.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Right.
- 25:25Speaker 3: So now all I got to.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Do is find some guys to pass rush, get in there,
- 25:30Speaker 4: chase the quarterback around, and we can cover the receivers.
- 25:34Speaker 4: And it worked out for us. You know, defense was
- 25:37Speaker 4: never a problem for us. But I don't know now—
- 25:42Speaker 4: if it even matters to the coaches at all the
- 25:46Speaker 4: different levels of what you– what do you have.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Before what you do? It's just what you do. And
- 25:53Speaker 3: I don't know if that's going to work. I don't
- 25:55Speaker 3: know if that works for him.
- 25:57Speaker 7: I mean, you would think Rich Rod, with all the
- 25:59Speaker 7: experience he has now, he would be able to kind
- 26:02Speaker 7: of figure that out, right?
- 26:03Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 26:05Speaker 5: That's a concern.
- 26:06Speaker 3: That's a concern. But don't we know that– And I
- 26:10Speaker 3: don't want to say it's his only thing, but offense
- 26:13Speaker 3: is his pride and joy.
- 26:15Speaker 6: Well, obviously, if you can't put up 42 points and
- 26:18Speaker 6: get a win.
- 26:19Speaker 7: Yes.
- 26:19Speaker 3: There's a defensive problem. Yes, there's a problem.
- 26:23Speaker 6: 42 points should win you 99% of games.
- 26:26Speaker 2: 99.9%.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Seriously. Yeah.
- 26:30Speaker 4: And then when you start to look at that, you know,
- 26:32Speaker 4: you're a WVU fan, and you're looking at that, and
- 26:35Speaker 4: you're saying, well, wait a minute.
- 26:36Speaker 3: What is wrong with our defense?
- 26:37Speaker 4: Right. Right.
- 26:39Speaker 5: And so that brings me to my next question I
- 26:41Speaker 5: want you guys to answer for me. So, you know,
- 26:43Speaker 5: with Rich Rod being– he's labeled the defensive performance atrocious,
- 26:47Speaker 5: of course. So do you think the defensive coordinator– I
- 26:51Speaker 5: think his name is Zach Alley. Do you think he's
- 26:53Speaker 5: in the hot seat now? Do you think that's a possibility?
- 26:56Speaker 3: I'm shocked that he's not in a seat at all.
- 27:00Speaker 5: I mean, I think Rich, he could– he's not to
- 27:03Speaker 5: that point yet because the offense is performing and there's
- 27:05Speaker 5: still hope. It's not like both sides of the ball
- 27:07Speaker 5: are really, really, really bad. The offense is holding its own.
- 27:11Speaker 5: But the defense is the part that's really, really, really struggling. So,
- 27:15Speaker 5: to me, do you think he would put the sacrificial
- 27:19Speaker 5: lamb out there to kind of appease the fans? Because
- 27:23Speaker 5: you know they're going to start getting restless.
- 27:25Speaker 6: Right.
- 27:25Speaker 4: Well, here's my question. Are you putting in a system
- 27:34Speaker 4: defensively that matches the players?
- 27:37Speaker 3: That you had.
- 27:38Speaker 5: That's a valid question. I have no idea.
- 27:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:41Speaker 3: And we will never know. Right, right.
- 27:44Speaker 4: The other piece of it is, are you thinking about
- 27:50Speaker 4: what's next? What are you going to do next? Because
- 27:53Speaker 4: if you are the guy that's in charge of the defense,
- 27:57Speaker 4: and the defense is the issue, and everybody's saying it's
- 28:01Speaker 4: the issue, you have to know that you're on a real,
- 28:06Speaker 4: real hot seat.
- 28:07Speaker 7: Right.
- 28:08Speaker 4: And you're going to have to kind of find, like,
- 28:10Speaker 4: you know what I would do? I would go right
- 28:11Speaker 4: to the head coach and say, Coach, you know, I'm
- 28:14Speaker 4: struggling here. What do I need to do?
- 28:15Speaker 5: What do you think he already has? I can see
- 28:19Speaker 5: Rich Rod initiating that conversation without him.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. But see, I want to beat him to it.
- 28:25Speaker 4: I want to beat him to it because I want
- 28:26Speaker 4: him to know that I know that we're not doing
- 28:30Speaker 4: anything on that side of the ball.
- 28:31Speaker 6: I mean, this is year two. And he is in
- 28:34Speaker 6: control of his own recruitment.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Yes.
- 28:37Speaker 7: So talking about the system and whether you've got players
- 28:40Speaker 7: in place for your system.
- 28:42Speaker 3: There you go.
- 28:42Speaker 7: That's two years that you had to recruit people to
- 28:45Speaker 7: fit your system.
- 28:47Speaker 5: Yes. Because it's not like it used to be, Matt.
- 28:49Speaker 5: You made a valid point. It used to be you
- 28:51Speaker 5: give them four.
- 28:52Speaker 6: Right.
- 28:52Speaker 5: Because the way recruiting worked, there wasn't NIL. And so
- 28:55Speaker 5: you had to get your– you know, your freshman players
- 28:57Speaker 5: in and let the other ones ride their time out
- 29:00Speaker 5: and then, you know, see. So by the time they
- 29:02Speaker 5: were juniors and seniors, that's when you would really see
- 29:05Speaker 5: whether or not the system works. But now there's no excuse.
- 29:08Speaker 5: People don't accept it because in NIL there's such a
- 29:10Speaker 5: turnover of players every year.
- 29:13Speaker 7: If you don't have it within two years, then you've
- 29:15Speaker 7: done it wrong. You've done something wrong.
- 29:20Speaker 5: We'll see this week, see what happens.
- 29:22Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I think this week, They're at.
- 29:27Speaker 5: Home in Morgantown at noon. I think Arizona. They play Arizona.
- 29:32Speaker 4: I think this week, even if you win, even if
- 29:36Speaker 4: you win, let's say it's a shootout.
- 29:38Speaker 5: It's 47. another high-scoring game.
- 29:47Speaker 3: The reality to that is, yes, we won.
- 29:51Speaker 4: But, yes, we for sure have a defensive problem that
- 29:55Speaker 4: has to be fixed.
- 29:56Speaker 5: Still bad.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Yes, it's still bad.
- 29:58Speaker 4: How do we– because if you're going to score that
- 30:00Speaker 4: many points, how are you letting the other team score.
- 30:03Speaker 3: That many points?
- 30:04Speaker 5: It boggles the mind to watch the team. It's like
- 30:07Speaker 5: you think for one second the offense just moves the
- 30:10Speaker 5: ball and looks sharp and clean, and then the next
- 30:13Speaker 5: thing you know they get a– they did have a
- 30:15Speaker 5: lot of penalties too. There were a lot of flags.
- 30:18Speaker 7: I was listening to the guys on the Sunday sports
- 30:20Speaker 7: line yesterday talking. I was only kind of halfway listening,
- 30:24Speaker 7: so I don't know the stats exactly. But this defense
- 30:27Speaker 7: is apparently like last place in like run defense, passing defense,
- 30:32Speaker 7: scoring defense. I mean, they're like near the bottom in
- 30:36Speaker 7: all defensive categories, not just some of them. All of them.
- 30:39Speaker 3: The whole thing. And that's hard to do. Yeah.
- 30:45Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 30:46Speaker 3: I mean. He's not wrong. I mean, that's a hard
- 30:50Speaker 3: thing to do.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Like, there's got to be, you've got to have players
- 30:55Speaker 4: that can help you on the run. You got to
- 30:58Speaker 4: have secondary guys that can take care of the passing
- 31:03Speaker 4: and teams run on us. Because the scouting report is
- 31:06Speaker 4: like we can run especially to the right side.
- 31:08Speaker 3: We can throw especially to the left corner.
- 31:11Speaker 6: Right.
- 31:12Speaker 3: That's your scouting report.
- 31:13Speaker 4: But it seems now that the scouting report is we
- 31:17Speaker 4: can do whatever we want.
- 31:19Speaker 7: I mean, when you're in last place in all of them,
- 31:21Speaker 7: you've got a defensive line problem.
- 31:23Speaker 6: You've got a secondary problem.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Something not right.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Yes.
- 31:27Speaker 5: I agree. All of the above. But I think you're right.
- 31:30Speaker 5: I think here's the thing. If they do not win Saturday,
- 31:34Speaker 5: it's going to be it's going to get really ugly.
- 31:36Speaker 5: I feel like these fans, you know, like like we've
- 31:39Speaker 5: all we've known all along when Rich Rod came back
- 31:42Speaker 5: to coach that you've got people that love him and
- 31:45Speaker 5: you've got people that feel really strongly. I don't want
- 31:47Speaker 5: to say hate, but they don't like him at all.
- 31:50Speaker 6: They're going to have to keep the motors running on
- 31:51Speaker 6: the fire trucks.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Because there's going to be couches running.
- 31:53Speaker 5: Yes, yes.
- 31:54Speaker 6: For all the wrong reasons.
- 31:55Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the panic meter is going to be
- 31:58Speaker 5: a full-blown high if they lose Saturday at home at noon.
- 32:02Speaker 5: I don't know what Arizona's record is, but it's a
- 32:04Speaker 5: game they should win.
- 32:06Speaker 3: So we'll see.
- 32:07Speaker 4: Well, let me ask this. Who said that, though? Did
- 32:10Speaker 4: the media– I'm sure you got that out of the media.
- 32:13Speaker 6: No, no, no.
- 32:13Speaker 5: Just looking– I don't know what– do you know that–
- 32:16Speaker 5: maybe Matt could look it up. But I don't think
- 32:17Speaker 5: they're like the stellar, you know, name this year that
- 32:20Speaker 5: they normally are. I think they're having an off season.
- 32:24Speaker 5: So I feel like it's.
- 32:25Speaker 6: Well, no.
- 32:26Speaker 5: Are they good?
- 32:26Speaker 6: They're 4-1.
- 32:28Speaker 5: Oh, they are 4-1.
- 32:29Speaker 6: They're 1-1 in the conference, but they're 4-1.
- 32:31Speaker 5: Okay, they're 1-1 in conference. Maybe that's what I was
- 32:33Speaker 5: looking at. But still, I mean, they're at home and–
- 32:40Speaker 5: Maybe just the fans are saying that.
- 32:42Speaker 3: See, I've learned.
- 32:44Speaker 6: Go ahead.
- 32:45Speaker 5: No, I just feel like the fans, if they do
- 32:48Speaker 5: not win this game at home, there's going to be
- 32:50Speaker 5: an issue.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Yes.
- 32:51Speaker 5: There's going to be an issue.
- 32:53Speaker 2: Yes.
- 32:54Speaker 3: A big one.
- 32:55Speaker 4: And I think, too, the expectation, the expectation of winning
- 33:04Speaker 4: and you're against a team that's only lost one game.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:09Speaker 5: I didn't realize that.
- 33:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:10Speaker 3: Misspoke.
- 33:10Speaker 6: Sorry.
- 33:12Speaker 5: I make mistakes once in a while.
- 33:13Speaker 3: So, really, now, what do you do? Like, because you
- 33:19Speaker 3: can't— You.
- 33:20Speaker 5: Win the game. You win the game. You have this
- 33:22Speaker 5: team prepared. You take care of this penalty issue. You
- 33:25Speaker 5: clean up the game.
- 33:26Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 33:27Speaker 5: Defense, try something different. What could it hurt? If you're
- 33:30Speaker 5: dead last in every single category in defense in the
- 33:35Speaker 5: NCAA— Try something different. What's the worst that could happen?
- 33:40Speaker 6: You lose again.
- 33:41Speaker 7: They basically have three weeks to figure it out because
- 33:44Speaker 7: after that, they've got number 11, Texas Tech, Kansas, whatever.
- 33:49Speaker 7: Then they've got number 22, Houston, and they end the
- 33:51Speaker 7: season with number 12, Utah. That's three top 25-ranked teams
- 33:55Speaker 7: out of the last four games.
- 33:57Speaker 5: Yeah, they've got some.
- 34:00Speaker 6: That's a big uphill climb.
- 34:01Speaker 3: That's a climb.
- 34:03Speaker 5: And to be this far into the season and still
- 34:06Speaker 5: have the same issues on defense, you don't see any improvement.
- 34:09Speaker 5: At least I haven't seen the improvement that should be
- 34:13Speaker 5: happening at this point in the season. I don't know
- 34:14Speaker 5: what you guys think, but there should.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Be little steps.
- 34:18Speaker 4: I'm with you, but my question is, if I'm the
- 34:23Speaker 4: head coach, how long am I going to stay with
- 34:27Speaker 4: my D coordinator?
- 34:28Speaker 3: How long am I going to stay with him?
- 34:29Speaker 5: That was my point.
- 34:30Speaker 3: Because....
- 34:32Speaker 4: At least let's change up. But then here comes the problem.
- 34:36Speaker 4: So let's say I fire you and I bring Matt in, right?
- 34:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:40Speaker 4: Matt's going to have– we're not going to keep the
- 34:42Speaker 4: same defense, that's for sure. You're not going to keep
- 34:45Speaker 4: doing the same thing. So Matt comes in and he says, hey,
- 34:48Speaker 4: I've got this. We'll change it to this kind of defense.
- 34:52Speaker 6: Okay.
- 34:54Speaker 4: Well, those guys might not even be able to play
- 34:56Speaker 4: that style of defense anymore.
- 34:59Speaker 5: But at least you put the effort in.
- 35:01Speaker 3: You've got to do something. You've got to do something.
- 35:05Speaker 5: You're in trouble right now. You're in deep trouble.
- 35:08Speaker 7: If you throw out the UT Martin game, because that
- 35:11Speaker 7: doesn't count, the other four games, they are giving up,
- 35:14Speaker 7: on average, 36 points a game.
- 35:17Speaker 5: Yeah, that's unreal.
- 35:19Speaker 3: 36 points in football. is really something. There's a problem. Yeah,
- 35:24Speaker 3: that's really something.
- 35:25Speaker 5: Well, let's move on to Huntington. Let's move on to Huntington.
- 35:27Speaker 5: We already talked about it.
- 35:28Speaker 4: I know, right?
- 35:29Speaker 5: It was one of those weekends, and it was just–
- 35:32Speaker 5: and Marshall, you know, they had a really tough loss.
- 35:34Speaker 5: They lost to James Madison University. Drops their record to 3-2.
- 35:41Speaker 5: JMU's 5-0, so at least, you know, they'll probably win
- 35:44Speaker 5: the Sun Belt, in my opinion. They're pretty good. But
- 35:46Speaker 5: another here-we-go common theme. Defense isn't great in Huntington either, guys.
- 35:51Speaker 5: They allowed over 300 yards in the first half and
- 35:55Speaker 5: gave up 28 points in the second quarter.
- 35:59Speaker 3: You watched it. That sounds like.
- 36:01Speaker 5: Two interceptions in the red zone, and they failed to
- 36:04Speaker 5: capitalize on three red zone trips. You can't do that
- 36:10Speaker 5: against a team like JMU.
- 36:11Speaker 3: Okay.
- 36:13Speaker 5: Can't.
- 36:14Speaker 3: The two interceptions in the red area.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 36:18Speaker 4: I understand that you do have to throw the ball.
- 36:20Speaker 4: I'm not an offensive coordinator by any stretch. I'm not
- 36:24Speaker 4: even going to give myself any kind of coach's nod.
- 36:29Speaker 4: But you, as a player, what are we doing? Like,
- 36:37Speaker 4: what are we doing?
- 36:37Speaker 5: Well, that brings my next, and I want you both
- 36:39Speaker 5: to answer this. So how much of that first half
- 36:43Speaker 5: collapse falls on player execution or versus the defensive scheme
- 36:50Speaker 5: adjustments by coaches?
- 36:51Speaker 4: Well, here's the reality of it. In most cases, publicly,
- 36:57Speaker 4: we blame the team.
- 36:59Speaker 3: We blame the player.
- 37:00Speaker 5: We blame the player's execution.
- 37:02Speaker 3: Okay. As you go forward, sooner or later, then it
- 37:07Speaker 3: switches to the coach.
- 37:10Speaker 4: I think it starts players and it ends with the
- 37:14Speaker 4: coach because at some point, you're looking at these.
- 37:17Speaker 3: Players and you think, well, what did they do last year? They, oh,
- 37:19Speaker 3: they were pretty, you know, they were all right. They
- 37:21Speaker 3: did pretty good.
- 37:22Speaker 4: Why are we not playing that way this year? And
- 37:25Speaker 4: God forbid if the system changed. Cause if you change
- 37:29Speaker 4: the system and.
- 37:31Speaker 5: You, But you have different players. I mean, I don't
- 37:34Speaker 5: even know. I bet it's the same issue at Marshall
- 37:37Speaker 5: as it is at any of the mid-level collegiate programs.
- 37:40Speaker 5: Losing your players. You've got different players coming in and out.
- 37:43Speaker 5: Because what happens, as we all know, we beat this
- 37:45Speaker 5: dead horse, let's beat it some more. You get some
- 37:48Speaker 5: players in that are successful and good playing at Marshall
- 37:52Speaker 5: or W, and guess what's going to happen?
- 37:54Speaker 3: They're leaving.
- 37:55Speaker 5: They're leaving. They're going to go where the money is
- 37:57Speaker 5: and the bigger name is.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 38:00Speaker 5: I don't know. I just– I don't know. Something needs
- 38:03Speaker 5: to happen down there too.
- 38:05Speaker 4: Well, and we have said– we have said before, we've
- 38:08Speaker 4: had– I think it's been a while back we were
- 38:10Speaker 4: talking about Marshall and NIL money.
- 38:13Speaker 6: Right.
- 38:14Speaker 4: I don't know if Marshall's able to compete in NIL money.
- 38:19Speaker 4: I don't know if they can keep a superstar quarterback.
- 38:22Speaker 4: I don't know if they can keep a superstar running back.
- 38:26Speaker 5: I think– And I need to look it up. And
- 38:29Speaker 5: this I'm just going to throw numbers out there that
- 38:31Speaker 5: I think I remember are correct, because somebody in a
- 38:33Speaker 5: Sunbelt conference group on Facebook that I was looking through
- 38:37Speaker 5: mentioned NIL money and compared JMU's money to Marshall's. And JMU,
- 38:42Speaker 5: I think, made between between 13.5, 14 NIL money, which
- 38:47Speaker 5: isn't horrible.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:49Speaker 5: And then you had Marshall at 10. So they're kind
- 38:52Speaker 5: of middle of the pack Sunbelt. But WU has like
- 38:55Speaker 5: 30 to 35 mil. So that's, you know, but then
- 38:59Speaker 5: you compare that to like these other schools at the
- 39:02Speaker 5: top of the tier. And it's no comparison.
- 39:04Speaker 3: Yeah, that money sounds good.
- 39:06Speaker 5: It's not close.
- 39:07Speaker 4: But if it's not anywhere remotely close to the competitive teams.
- 39:12Speaker 7: Right.
- 39:13Speaker 4: I mean, because, come on, if I got the most money,
- 39:17Speaker 4: I'm not saying that you're going to win. But you're
- 39:20Speaker 4: not going to be bad. You're going to win a
- 39:22Speaker 4: bunch of games.
- 39:23Speaker 5: Well, and you're going to be able to stabilize your
- 39:25Speaker 5: program and keep players longer.
- 39:27Speaker 3: Keep players longer.
- 39:28Speaker 5: You know, that's part of it.
- 39:29Speaker 6: I hate to be like this.
- 39:30Speaker 3: Uh-oh.
- 39:32Speaker 6: Be it. I hate to be this way.
- 39:36Speaker 7: And there are a lot of people that hated Charles
- 39:38Speaker 7: Huff for a number of reasons.
- 39:40Speaker 6: I thought he was an okay head coach. I thought
- 39:42Speaker 6: he was a good– Oh, he was an excellent coach.
- 39:43Speaker 6: I thought he was a.
- 39:43Speaker 7: Great choice for Marshall at the time. It's what they needed.
- 39:46Speaker 7: I thought– Doc Holliday was a great coach until he wasn't.
- 39:50Speaker 7: He eventually lost the locker room in that last year.
- 39:52Speaker 5: He did.
- 39:54Speaker 7: For a long time, he was a good coach. Before that,
- 39:57Speaker 7: you had Mark Snyder in there.
- 39:59Speaker 6: Okay, whatever.
- 40:00Speaker 7: I was not impressed when they brought on Tony Gibson.
- 40:05Speaker 7: I just felt like after Doc Holliday and after Charles Huff,
- 40:11Speaker 7: I get bringing one of your guys, one of your
- 40:14Speaker 7: Marshall guys back home to coach the team. I feel
- 40:17Speaker 7: like it just wasn't the right fit. I don't think
- 40:21Speaker 7: he is the guy to navigate this whole transfer portal,
- 40:27Speaker 7: NIL world. I don't think he's the guy that's going to,
- 40:31Speaker 7: I don't think he's an elite enough coach to be
- 40:35Speaker 7: able to handle this Sunbelt Conference.
- 40:37Speaker 5: And I'm going to play devil's advocate to what you're saying.
- 40:40Speaker 5: I understand what you're saying, but With the money that's
- 40:43Speaker 5: available to Marshall. That's the issue.
- 40:46Speaker 7: But it's– and Carl was kind of getting to this
- 40:48Speaker 7: a little bit earlier. I mean, it's like you can
- 40:50Speaker 7: pay to have all the best players on your team.
- 40:53Speaker 6: Right.
- 40:54Speaker 7: But if you don't have a coach that can get
- 40:55Speaker 7: them all rounded up together on the same page, what
- 40:58Speaker 7: does it matter?
- 40:58Speaker 5: Well, that's true too.
- 40:59Speaker 7: Everybody's just doing whatever they think they know.
- 41:01Speaker 5: That's true.
- 41:03Speaker 3: But– And think about this.
- 41:05Speaker 4: So Matt gets some NIO money, and he's a starter,
- 41:10Speaker 4: and I realize that he got it. Where do I
- 41:16Speaker 4: got to go to talk? Because I need some more.
- 41:19Speaker 4: Because I think I'm better. I can't quote an exact situation,
- 41:26Speaker 4: but I cannot imagine They're not being a discussion.
- 41:31Speaker 3: Me thinking that I'm this good.
- 41:35Speaker 4: Yeah. And Matt's thinking he's that good. And he gets,
- 41:38Speaker 4: he gets a, he gets some NIO money. That's above mine.
- 41:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:43Speaker 4: There is no way I'm going to be okay with that.
- 41:47Speaker 4: How many times do you think. That is going to
- 41:50Speaker 4: be a problem.
- 41:51Speaker 5: I'm sure it's a problem.
- 41:53Speaker 3: In the system.
- 41:54Speaker 5: In the whole system. That's what I was just going
- 41:56Speaker 5: to say. I'm sure the egos get in the way
- 41:58Speaker 5: when it comes to the NIL pay. You know, that
- 42:02Speaker 5: causes some friction on some teams.
- 42:03Speaker 3: It's bad in the pros.
- 42:04Speaker 5: But a good coach can handle that. I would think
- 42:06Speaker 5: a good coach can smooth that over in some way.
- 42:09Speaker 7: When I see breakdowns in offense, to me, either you're
- 42:13Speaker 7: calling the wrong plays, which that falls on the coach.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Yep. Yep.
- 42:17Speaker 7: Or the players don't have enough experience running those plays
- 42:20Speaker 7: to get.
- 42:21Speaker 5: The group the practice grease.
- 42:23Speaker 7: The system so to speak so there's something wrong with
- 42:26Speaker 7: the practice which again i feel like falls on the
- 42:30Speaker 7: coaches like i hate to already be at that point
- 42:32Speaker 7: with this marshall program but that's where i'm at i
- 42:34Speaker 7: think it's the coaches.
- 42:36Speaker 5: So so here's another question for both of you guys
- 42:40Speaker 5: so We're having these issues inside the 20-yard line. That
- 42:44Speaker 5: needs to be fixed. I mean, if you would have capitalized,
- 42:47Speaker 5: at least got a field goal out of those three
- 42:50Speaker 5: red zone trips, that game could have been different. I mean,
- 42:53Speaker 5: I'm not saying it would have changed the outcome completely,
- 42:56Speaker 5: but it could have been closer.
- 42:57Speaker 6: Hold on to the ball.
- 42:58Speaker 5: Hold on to the ball. You know, so, yeah, I
- 43:00Speaker 5: was just going to say, but are there certain, like,
- 43:04Speaker 5: Play calling, Carl, that they should be focusing on when
- 43:07Speaker 5: they're in the red zone that they're not?
- 43:09Speaker 3: I think what should– like typically you.
- 43:12Speaker 5: Have– Besides hold on to the ball.
- 43:13Speaker 3: I agree with that.
- 43:15Speaker 4: Typically you have like what we call a red zone practice.
- 43:20Speaker 3: You go from– Hurry up offense like?
- 43:23Speaker 4: Well, no, just when you're inside of the 15 and
- 43:26Speaker 4: going in, right, to score.
- 43:29Speaker 3: Right, right, right.
- 43:30Speaker 4: You have a certain list of plays that you typically
- 43:34Speaker 4: are going to run.
- 43:36Speaker 3: So there's one or two things that's happened.
- 43:37Speaker 4: You've picked the wrong ones, or you've picked the wrong
- 43:41Speaker 4: ones that the guys can't do.
- 43:45Speaker 3: They can't block it. Are you throwing it in there,
- 43:48Speaker 3: or are you running it?
- 43:49Speaker 5: Well, two interceptions in the red zone.
- 43:51Speaker 3: That was two out of three.
- 43:53Speaker 4: Your red zone system could– Be based off of throwing
- 43:58Speaker 4: the ball. Once we get into the red zone, we
- 44:00Speaker 4: know you're going to stack your defense. We're going to
- 44:03Speaker 4: throw the football. Okay, that's fine. But if you throw
- 44:07Speaker 4: the football and you're getting picked.
- 44:09Speaker 5: Then there's an issue.
- 44:10Speaker 6: There's an issue. Because there's safe ways to throw the ball.
- 44:13Speaker 6: There's safe places on the field to throw it. Right, right.
- 44:16Speaker 5: I get that. I get that.
- 44:17Speaker 6: The quarterback's got to get back. You know, three-step drop.
- 44:20Speaker 6: Get that thing out of there.
- 44:21Speaker 3: Don't hold on to it.
- 44:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:24Speaker 5: They need to revamp their plays that they're using for
- 44:27Speaker 5: the red zone then, do you think?
- 44:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I would think so. Something is wrong. Something is
- 44:33Speaker 3: wrong when you get intercepted like that. In these two systems,
- 44:36Speaker 3: something is wrong.
- 44:37Speaker 4: Now, I'm going to justify our conversation for a second.
- 44:44Speaker 4: One of the things that players, coaches hate is this talk.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Right?
- 44:54Speaker 3: What do we know?
- 44:55Speaker 2: Right?
- 44:55Speaker 3: What do we know?
- 44:57Speaker 4: I want to just make the case that, for me,
- 45:00Speaker 4: I get to judge.
- 45:04Speaker 4: Sports from this seat now, from the easier seat, and
- 45:09Speaker 4: I've been judged.
- 45:12Speaker 3: And did I hate it?
- 45:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 45:13Speaker 3: But do you take it?
- 45:14Speaker 6: Yes.
- 45:15Speaker 3: So if you're hearing it, you got to take it.
- 45:18Speaker 3: It comes with it.
- 45:19Speaker 5: I don't think we're really, I mean, I think sometimes
- 45:21Speaker 5: fans are, their expectations are unrealistic. You know, that complain, oh,
- 45:27Speaker 5: we suck, you know, even when they win, you know.
- 45:30Speaker 5: But I think that In this case, this is a
- 45:33Speaker 5: legitimate question. I'm not criticizing anything. I want to know
- 45:37Speaker 5: how do we fix it. And I think most Hurd
- 45:40Speaker 5: fans that were in attendance on Saturday probably have the
- 45:43Speaker 5: same question that I do because if this isn't corrected,
- 45:48Speaker 5: every time we're in the red zone, you've got to
- 45:53Speaker 5: bring points out of the red zone. some type of,
- 45:56Speaker 5: whether it's a field goal.
- 45:57Speaker 3: Yes, you have to. You have to at least a three-point.
- 46:00Speaker 5: Or you're out of the game.
- 46:01Speaker 3: Yes.
- 46:02Speaker 5: Isn't that a reality?
- 46:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 46:04Speaker 4: But, see, I think some of that has changed in
- 46:07Speaker 4: the mindset of these legitimate good and great coaches. Because
- 46:14Speaker 4: I'm good and great or I've been classified as good
- 46:17Speaker 4: or great, I can kind of do really whatever I
- 46:19Speaker 4: want because usually it's going to work out for me.
- 46:23Speaker 4: And what you don't know is what your competition is.
- 46:27Speaker 4: Because it's not you. You know, I don't care what
- 46:30Speaker 4: play you call. If you're against a team that's way
- 46:33Speaker 4: better or just simply better.
- 46:35Speaker 5: Than you, they're going to.
- 46:36Speaker 6: Shut you down.
- 46:37Speaker 5: And JMU is obviously not a slouch. They're a good team.
- 46:40Speaker 5: They're a good team.
- 46:40Speaker 7: No.
- 46:41Speaker 3: And I just.
- 46:44Speaker 4: Think where we are in the state now with our
- 46:48Speaker 4: major universities, I think– at the football level, I think
- 46:54Speaker 4: we have notable coaches. I think we have notable coaches.
- 46:58Speaker 4: And the problem is, is we just haven't, we, they
- 47:02Speaker 4: just have not been able to, for whatever the reasons are,
- 47:07Speaker 4: been able to get the teams where we, where the
- 47:12Speaker 4: fan base would want them.
- 47:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 47:14Speaker 5: And I think, I think they're not, I don't want
- 47:17Speaker 5: to say, I don't want to criticize. I want to,
- 47:19Speaker 5: you know, just, just point out facts and, And the
- 47:22Speaker 5: facts are that I don't think we're keeping up with
- 47:25Speaker 5: the NIL world in Morgantown or Huntington.
- 47:28Speaker 3: I think you're right.
- 47:29Speaker 5: I think that's a real difficult, you know, waters for
- 47:32Speaker 5: these two head coaches to navigate for whatever reason. And,
- 47:36Speaker 5: you know, it's a different style of recruiting, guys.
- 47:38Speaker 3: It's not the same.
- 47:39Speaker 5: It's not our style of recruiting anymore. It doesn't work.
- 47:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:42Speaker 4: Okay, so I come knock on your door because I
- 47:45Speaker 4: want to get your son. If I don't bring my
- 47:48Speaker 4: pocketbook or talk about my pocketbook.
- 47:50Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 47:51Speaker 4: Then you're not even going to, there's no reason for
- 47:53Speaker 4: you to even talk to me.
- 47:54Speaker 2: No.
- 47:55Speaker 5: That's what I mean. It's not like it used to
- 47:57Speaker 5: be when Rich Rod, you know, back when he was
- 47:59Speaker 5: coaching and we, you know, got close to the national championship. And,
- 48:03Speaker 5: you know, even Tony Gibson, you know, he's not old,
- 48:07Speaker 5: but he's not young either. So I think, you know,
- 48:09Speaker 5: like I said, these coaches have to adjust to a
- 48:12Speaker 5: whole new world of recruiting, NIL, and just the fact that,
- 48:17Speaker 5: You think you get a team that you're secure with
- 48:20Speaker 5: and they've learned a system and then you lose half
- 48:21Speaker 5: your players every year. I mean, that's a tough thing
- 48:24Speaker 5: to deal with every year.
- 48:27Speaker 3: Every year.
- 48:27Speaker 5: Every year. We're not talking every, like, it's a rebuilding,
- 48:30Speaker 5: you know, season. Every year is a rebuilding season for us.
- 48:34Speaker 4: So midway through your season, you're already talking about, like, what,
- 48:37Speaker 4: you know, what position do we need to address?
- 48:40Speaker 1: Right.
- 48:40Speaker 4: You know, so we're talking about, oh, we need a
- 48:42Speaker 4: safety and we probably need a center and we probably
- 48:45Speaker 4: need a good tight end and all those kind of things. Well,
- 48:49Speaker 4: all of a sudden, those guys are out there, but
- 48:53Speaker 4: you know what they got? They got a money sign
- 48:55Speaker 4: on them.
- 48:55Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 48:57Speaker 3: It's gonna cost you right now.
- 48:58Speaker 4: You can say okay Well, we can let the top
- 49:00Speaker 4: ones go and maybe try to get some of the
- 49:03Speaker 4: lower ones Well, the lower ones are still wanting a
- 49:06Speaker 4: dollar or two. Yeah, and then when they come They
- 49:09Speaker 4: might not be able to produce what you thought and
- 49:13Speaker 4: you've lost the money.
- 49:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it's such a double-edged sword now I.
- 49:17Speaker 7: Really do think that at some point college is football
- 49:22Speaker 7: and maybe some of the other sports, they're going to
- 49:23Speaker 7: have to go to contracts.
- 49:25Speaker 5: I agree.
- 49:26Speaker 3: At least two years. Let me try.
- 49:28Speaker 6: To sign you two years or three years maybe even.
- 49:31Speaker 3: I would agree, but I'm going to say this.
- 49:34Speaker 4: I think where it should go, And you can possibly
- 49:39Speaker 4: do that inside of this system. But the max amount
- 49:45Speaker 4: of money that you're allowed to provide a player.
- 49:50Speaker 3: Or female athlete NIL money is this.
- 49:56Speaker 5: Just cap it.
- 49:57Speaker 6: You cap it for everybody.
- 50:01Speaker 4: Then from there down you can fit somebody in. And
- 50:06Speaker 4: I don't even think that it's a million dollars or
- 50:10Speaker 4: anything like that.
- 50:11Speaker 3: I think it's less than that.
- 50:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:13Speaker 4: You know, but whatever it is, it has to have
- 50:17Speaker 4: a cap, and your top player.
- 50:21Speaker 3: Gets the top money.
- 50:22Speaker 4: If you're trying to recruit a top guy, you can
- 50:26Speaker 4: give that to him too if you're willing to risk that.
- 50:30Speaker 4: Or you make the case, you say that all incoming
- 50:34Speaker 4: freshmen Or even Juco players get this.
- 50:38Speaker 6: Oh, now that I like.
- 50:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 50:40Speaker 3: They get this. So that's in between the rookie.
- 50:43Speaker 5: So you have tiers of payments.
- 50:45Speaker 2: Yes.
- 50:45Speaker 5: And you know exactly what you're getting.
- 50:47Speaker 3: What you're going to get.
- 50:47Speaker 5: According to where you're coming from.
- 50:49Speaker 4: So one thing that'll do, that'll stop me from leaving
- 50:53Speaker 4: Marshall to go to somewhere else. Because I'm still that guy.
- 50:56Speaker 4: I still qualify for that amount of money.
- 51:00Speaker 6: Right.
- 51:00Speaker 3: So now if I want that kind of money, the
- 51:02Speaker 3: same money somewhere else.
- 51:03Speaker 5: Right.
- 51:04Speaker 3: Am I going to do that?
- 51:06Speaker 7: Maybe.
- 51:06Speaker 3: But I don't benefit from it.
- 51:09Speaker 7: Man, if you could expand that to, like, sophomores.
- 51:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:13Speaker 7: Freshman and sophomore. Everybody gets this same minimum, whatever it is.
- 51:18Speaker 4: Now, with that saying, if you're a freshman or sophomore
- 51:23Speaker 4: and you're not playing, special teams or whatever you might
- 51:26Speaker 4: play that, you get X.
- 51:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 51:28Speaker 4: If you're a freshman, sophomore, and you're playing– You get this.
- 51:34Speaker 4: If you're a starter, you get that.
- 51:37Speaker 5: But you know who's not going to be for this?
- 51:39Speaker 3: Oh, none of the players. The Big Ten, the SEC.
- 51:43Speaker 3: The players are not going to be for it. The
- 51:45Speaker 3: players are not going to.
- 51:46Speaker 5: Be for it.
- 51:46Speaker 1: Big 12.
- 51:47Speaker 5: Also the conferences because that takes away their leverage. See,
- 51:50Speaker 5: that's how they stay relevant and in the championship game
- 51:54Speaker 5: year after year making more and more revenue is the
- 51:56Speaker 5: fact that they have more NIL money and can keep
- 51:59Speaker 5: these top players.
- 51:59Speaker 6: But it's not all the conferences.
- 52:02Speaker 7: You know it's only certain conferences that are going to
- 52:05Speaker 7: be bothered by it.
- 52:06Speaker 5: Yes, like the SEC. Mainly the SEC. But also Big Ten.
- 52:11Speaker 5: They're not far off from them. I don't think the
- 52:15Speaker 5: Big 12 would have a problem with it to a degree.
- 52:18Speaker 5: And I don't think the ACC would. I think mainly
- 52:21Speaker 5: the SEC and the Big Ten because they're your biggest
- 52:24Speaker 5: NIL providers. And they don't want that. They don't want
- 52:27Speaker 5: a limit.
- 52:28Speaker 3: Let me ask this question.
- 52:30Speaker 6: So.
- 52:32Speaker 3: There's mumbling around about high school.
- 52:37Speaker 5: It's going on in high school.
- 52:38Speaker 6: It is.
- 52:38Speaker 5: To a degree.
- 52:39Speaker 6: To me, if anywhere.
- 52:41Speaker 3: And it's legal. Well, if there's anywhere that you should
- 52:44Speaker 3: say that you should have a cap.
- 52:47Speaker 4: And a dollar structure for players, it's at the high school.
- 52:52Speaker 6: It has to be.
- 52:53Speaker 7: It has to be.
- 52:53Speaker 6: That's where it needs to start.
- 52:54Speaker 3: That's where it has to start, for sure.
- 52:56Speaker 4: You know, there is not a high school football player
- 53:01Speaker 4: that is worthy of a hundred thousand dollars to play
- 53:08Speaker 4: on a high school football team. Cause the state championship
- 53:10Speaker 4: is not even going to bring the high school any money.
- 53:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 53:13Speaker 5: Well, and then I think, I think this is a
- 53:15Speaker 5: bigger issue in like, uh, you're like Texas where they
- 53:19Speaker 5: have high schools, the size of, of, you know, our
- 53:22Speaker 5: small colleges here. Um, you know, and they have way
- 53:25Speaker 5: more revenue coming into their, their programs than we have
- 53:28Speaker 5: in West Virginia. Uh, But definitely, you know, I think
- 53:32Speaker 5: right now in West Virginia where it's so brand new,
- 53:35Speaker 5: you know, they're going to have to just try things
- 53:38Speaker 5: and what works, keep it, and what doesn't work, throw
- 53:40Speaker 5: it out. And I think it's going to be a
- 53:42Speaker 5: learning curve for a while. I mean, I think people
- 53:44Speaker 5: are going to make mistakes with it. And also, you know,
- 53:47Speaker 5: who knows how strong this will be in West Virginia
- 53:51Speaker 5: because I'm not saying we don't have excellent athletes that are,
- 53:54Speaker 5: you know, but, you know, our athletes are typically– stay
- 53:58Speaker 5: in state a lot of times. Every once in a
- 54:01Speaker 5: while we'll get one that's, you know, pretty star-powered and
- 54:05Speaker 5: ends up going somewhere huge.
- 54:06Speaker 3: The Randy Moss type.
- 54:07Speaker 5: The Randy Moss type, yeah. But, I mean, I think
- 54:10Speaker 5: right now with the NIL, that's just an unexplored territory
- 54:13Speaker 5: in West Virginia that they're just going to have to
- 54:15Speaker 5: work the kinks out year by year.
- 54:17Speaker 4: But I think if they don't, if they're not sitting
- 54:20Speaker 4: down at the table now and start talking about it,
- 54:24Speaker 4: because if it hits and it hits like– like NIL
- 54:29Speaker 4: all over the country, then I have a right to
- 54:33Speaker 4: ask for. I'm a quarterback, and there's a quarterback in
- 54:38Speaker 4: Kentucky who's a high school player, and he's getting this.
- 54:43Speaker 3: Why should I get less?
- 54:44Speaker 5: Do you think we're that far advanced with it?
- 54:47Speaker 3: I don't. I don't even.
- 54:49Speaker 5: Understand all of it yet, to be honest. Like, I
- 54:52Speaker 5: don't understand the intricacies of an I.O. at the high
- 54:55Speaker 5: school level.
- 54:56Speaker 3: I don't either. Well, he didn't call Saluja back on.
- 54:59Speaker 5: He can talk to us about it.
- 55:01Speaker 3: The safety side of it is, is a cap.
- 55:04Speaker 6: Yeah. Oh, I agree.
- 55:05Speaker 3: That's the safety side. Then there's no confusion. But how
- 55:07Speaker 3: do you.
- 55:08Speaker 5: Cap it at the high school level? Like, it's kind
- 55:10Speaker 5: of a.
- 55:10Speaker 6: You have to make it equal.
- 55:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:12Speaker 6: You just have to make it equal for everybody.
- 55:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I guess you're right.
- 55:15Speaker 4: And I don't care if– I don't think that Matt's
- 55:19Speaker 4: the star guy for capital. They think he's the top guy.
- 55:24Speaker 4: They pay him as the top guy, whatever that amount
- 55:27Speaker 4: of money is.
- 55:27Speaker 5: But on the flip side of that, you have some
- 55:29Speaker 5: schools that can't pay any players anything. They have no boosters,
- 55:33Speaker 5: no money. They barely can field a team.
- 55:35Speaker 6: True.
- 55:36Speaker 5: So it's so unequal in our state.
- 55:38Speaker 4: And what's going to happen is they're going to leave.
- 55:41Speaker 4: Because I'm going to offer your player.
- 55:44Speaker 3: Some money to come over to mine.
- 55:47Speaker 4: I think you're right in that. But I don't see
- 55:50Speaker 4: how we're going to stop. I don't see how it's
- 55:52Speaker 4: going to stop. And if we don't have some kind
- 55:55Speaker 4: of cap on it, that's going to make it even worse.
- 55:57Speaker 4: Because teams that are in communities that have tons and
- 56:02Speaker 4: tons of money.
- 56:03Speaker 5: That's what I mean.
- 56:04Speaker 3: They're going to have every player, every good player.
- 56:07Speaker 5: I mean, it's kind of disheartening, don't you think?
- 56:11Speaker 4: It makes you look at, and I'll say this, it
- 56:14Speaker 4: makes you look at football as probably one of the
- 56:18Speaker 4: worst situations and outcomes.
- 56:23Speaker 3: That you've ever seen.
- 56:24Speaker 4: It just seems like it has a way to just drop,
- 56:28Speaker 4: the bottom just dropping.
- 56:29Speaker 3: Out of it.
- 56:31Speaker 5: Well, I mean, like I said... I don't want to
- 56:34Speaker 5: make a judgment on what we're doing in our state
- 56:36Speaker 5: because I don't think we're into it far enough to
- 56:38Speaker 5: even see the positives and the negatives. I think we're
- 56:41Speaker 5: still in that infancy stage with it that, you know,
- 56:44Speaker 5: we're going to have to see how things pan out
- 56:47Speaker 5: with it. And like I said, you know, I like
- 56:50Speaker 5: the idea of the cap, but I don't know how
- 56:53Speaker 5: it would work at the high school level. I do
- 56:55Speaker 5: think that if things keep going at the rate they're
- 57:00Speaker 5: going at the collegiate level, it's going to be a huge,
- 57:03Speaker 5: huge problem. I know that, uh, what is it? The protect, uh,
- 57:06Speaker 5: college success protect college sports.
- 57:09Speaker 4: Yes.
- 57:10Speaker 7: Yes.
- 57:10Speaker 5: Is going to address a lot of these things that
- 57:12Speaker 5: we're talking about. So let's just keep our fingers crossed
- 57:14Speaker 5: and hope that, you know, some of those things include
- 57:16Speaker 5: caps and whatnot.
- 57:18Speaker 4: And I, and I'll, I'll, I'll close this out on
- 57:21Speaker 4: with this by saying it's almost virtually impossible to, It's
- 57:27Speaker 4: just like rules and regulations.
- 57:30Speaker 3: It's going to go all the way. It's going to
- 57:32Speaker 3: get to the high school level.
- 57:35Speaker 6: I know that.
- 57:36Speaker 4: Sooner or later, it's going to get to the high
- 57:37Speaker 4: school level. And if it gets there and we don't
- 57:42Speaker 4: already have things in place of how it's going to
- 57:44Speaker 4: work or how we're going to let it work, I
- 57:48Speaker 4: think what you're going to find is you're going to
- 57:50Speaker 4: see teams closing out.
- 57:53Speaker 3: They're not going to build a team. I mean, that's
- 57:55Speaker 3: what I said.
- 57:56Speaker 4: And it's already that. You already got places that are,
- 58:00Speaker 4: you know, struggling to fill the football team.
- 58:03Speaker 5: Right. Well, who was it that had to? They just–
- 58:08Speaker 5: they had to not finish. They disbanded the team this year,
- 58:11Speaker 5: this season.
- 58:12Speaker 3: Yes, I can't remember who that was. But, yeah, I
- 58:14Speaker 3: did see that too. I did see that.
- 58:16Speaker 5: It wasn't Chapmanville, was it?
- 58:17Speaker 6: No. Was it Van?
- 58:19Speaker 4: Van.
- 58:19Speaker 5: I think you're right. Maybe it was last year. Well, no,
- 58:21Speaker 5: it was this year. I know this year they tried.
- 58:23Speaker 3: To build a team. Yeah, I saw that too.
- 58:24Speaker 5: And they started to get the season. And then, like,
- 58:26Speaker 5: two games in, they couldn't do it.
- 58:28Speaker 6: They've been in the news too about, like, this whole
- 58:30Speaker 6: school district having issues. Yeah, yeah. All right.
- 58:33Speaker 4: Well, ladies and gentlemen, I hope you enjoyed the conversation
- 58:36Speaker 4: and we will be back again next week.
