- 0:02Speaker 1: This is a bramble Jam podcast. Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark,
- 0:24Speaker 1: a Hallmark review podcast. I'm Megan and I'm a longtime
- 0:26Speaker 1: Hallmark fan. I'm when Dy, I'm a former Hallmark hater.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We're back with more of your listener emails in the
- 0:33Speaker 1: June installment of our Listener Mailbag episode. If you want
- 0:36Speaker 1: to participate in this episode. I know Hallmark content's been
- 0:40Speaker 1: a little light, but I feel like from here on
- 0:42Speaker 1: out we should have a lot of opinions. There should
- 0:44Speaker 1: be a lot of new stuff coming. So you can
- 0:47Speaker 1: do two things. You can email us Girls Gone Hallmark
- 0:49Speaker 1: at gmail dot com. You can dma us on Instagram.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Just know that's like a fast and furious place over there,
- 0:57Speaker 1: and we might lose it, so email is the best
- 0:59Speaker 1: way to do it. Or leave us a voice memo
- 1:02Speaker 1: nine four nine three two nine eight zero nine zero.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Do we have any of this month? No no voicemails?
- 1:11Speaker 1: Oh that makes me so sad. You guys have let
- 1:13Speaker 1: me down. I don't think. I think. I think we've
- 1:16Speaker 1: done them all. I know. Isn't that sad? The excitement
- 1:20Speaker 1: for the voice has died down. Well, like you said,
- 1:23Speaker 1: there's not a ton of content out there. So maybe
- 1:26Speaker 1: people just don't have hot takes on uh, you know, repeats.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I don't know. Perhaps perhaps that's all right, But like
- 1:35Speaker 1: you said, we're gonna we're ramping up, Like I know,
- 1:38Speaker 1: this is the time, this is gonna be that this
- 1:40Speaker 1: is the quiet before the storm. I know it is.
- 1:43Speaker 1: I believe we're gonna get the last push of summer movies,
- 1:47Speaker 1: even though it's June. We're gonna get the last push
- 1:49Speaker 1: of summer movies, and then we're gonna get a little
- 1:50Speaker 1: bit of fall content and then boom boom, it's gonna
- 1:53Speaker 1: be Christmas in October. Yeah, all right, you want to start,
- 1:57Speaker 1: I do. Our first email is from Paula regarding Pride Month. Hi,
- 2:02Speaker 1: So we're a third of the way through Pride Month,
- 2:05Speaker 1: and I hope you don't mind if I vent my
- 2:07Speaker 1: frustration with Hallmark and Pride. I believe it's a worthy conversation.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Below is a comment I left on Facebook when you
- 2:14Speaker 1: posted about the movie Notes of Autumn. I expanded it
- 2:18Speaker 1: a little bit that maybe the last gay led movie
- 2:22Speaker 1: Hallmark has aired, and it's only half the movie. Remember
- 2:25Speaker 1: Friends and Family Christmas in twenty twenty three. That is
- 2:28Speaker 1: one of two movies with lesbian couples. The other was
- 2:31Speaker 1: Love Classified and that had an ensemble cast. Luke McFarlane
- 2:36Speaker 1: gets his reality show and Ali Liebert gets to direct. Wow,
- 2:40Speaker 1: such inclusiveness. That's sarcasm. Let's not forget the total absence
- 2:46Speaker 1: of trans and non binary characters. I guess we're too
- 2:49Speaker 1: scary again sarcasm. It's so bad that they probably won't
- 2:53Speaker 1: show Love under the Rainbow, a cute little movie from
- 2:56Speaker 1: twenty nineteen, out of Fear look it up. I guess
- 2:58Speaker 1: Hallmark Crown is for a king and not a queen.
- 3:02Speaker 1: Wouldn't Love at PrideFest be a great concept for a movie.
- 3:06Speaker 1: It's hard when the best you can expect is some
- 3:09Speaker 1: token characters, the gay best friend, the wise gay couple, etc.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Thank you for your patience and your acceptance. Do you
- 3:16Speaker 1: have thoughts, Megan? I do. I would have loved to
- 3:23Speaker 1: see Hallmark make some sort of statement for Pride anything.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Let me look at their Instagram while I'm talking, I'm
- 3:29Speaker 1: scrolling Instagram. There's nothing. They've made, no statement. I'd love
- 3:32Speaker 1: to see them, as a brand make a statement for Pride.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I'm not surprised that they don't a big part of
- 3:36Speaker 1: their base would react negatively to that, and I think
- 3:41Speaker 1: that's just something that as businesses we need to be
- 3:44Speaker 1: willing to take on. But I think Hallmark has really
- 3:48Speaker 1: taken a step back. In the last year. We saw
- 3:50Speaker 1: some forward progress and then it was like they put
- 3:52Speaker 1: the brakes on and they put it in reverse. I
- 3:55Speaker 1: am really looking to this countdown to Christmas lineup for
- 4:00Speaker 1: some inclusivity. I'm afraid it's not going to happen. I'm
- 4:04Speaker 1: thinking about Paula's email. The Groomsman was a movie that
- 4:09Speaker 1: had a major lead character and storyline m hm. However,
- 4:14Speaker 1: it's only been on Hallmark Plus it has not aired
- 4:16Speaker 1: on Hallmark Channel. And I do remember our conversation with
- 4:21Speaker 1: Jonathan Bennett, and I don't know if it made it
- 4:23Speaker 1: to the podcast or not, but we did comment about
- 4:27Speaker 1: the lack of diversity, and he didn't outrightly say it,
- 4:32Speaker 1: but he did make a face a little acknowledgment of it.
- 4:36Speaker 1: So he made a face and then he danced really yeah, true.
- 4:40Speaker 1: I mean, you know, Hallmark is where his bread is buttered. Sure,
- 4:44Speaker 1: And his statement was like he didn't want to be
- 4:47Speaker 1: telling gay stories. He wanted to be telling stories that
- 4:49Speaker 1: featured gay people. Like living their lives, which I understood,
- 4:53Speaker 1: but yeah, I think he's the only person that's being
- 4:55Speaker 1: allowed to tell those stories on Hallmark. And I hope,
- 5:00Speaker 1: like last seasons Finding Mister Christmas, that we get some
- 5:04Speaker 1: members of the LGBTQ community. You know, we had Daxon
- 5:07Speaker 1: last year who he and Jonathan had a very emotional
- 5:11Speaker 1: connection and I loved his storyline and I was so
- 5:13Speaker 1: sad to see him leave the show so early. I
- 5:15Speaker 1: think Hallmark has a lot of strides to take. I
- 5:18Speaker 1: think they are behind the times in this regard. I
- 5:22Speaker 1: think so too, And in my personal opinion, I think
- 5:25Speaker 1: a movie called Love at PrideFest would be super cute.
- 5:29Speaker 1: It would be super cute. I just looked up Love
- 5:32Speaker 1: under the Rainbow. It is in case anybody's wondering, it's
- 5:36Speaker 1: not a movie that features any sort of LGBTQ representation.
- 5:40Speaker 1: She's just riffing on the rainbow part of it. It
- 5:43Speaker 1: is a Jody Sweeten movie. Oh Jody Sweeten? Was it
- 5:49Speaker 1: on Hallmark? Yeah? It's a Hallmark Channel original movie from
- 5:52Speaker 1: twenty nineteen. Oh, okay, Jody Sweeten out in these streets
- 5:57Speaker 1: in La I know, doing the damn thing, you know,
- 6:01Speaker 1: what's funny is I have recently been served too clips
- 6:06Speaker 1: of the Candice Cameron Beret podcast on TikTok. I do
- 6:10Speaker 1: not know why I didn't know she had a podcast,
- 6:14Speaker 1: and I don't know why my algorithm has betrayed me.
- 6:21Speaker 1: But like two days in a row, and the first
- 6:25Speaker 1: one she was like, my best friend and I don't
- 6:27Speaker 1: share the same political views, and yet we can be
- 6:30Speaker 1: friends and we can have a discussion, which was too much.
- 6:35Speaker 1: And then the next one was like, I don't even
- 6:37Speaker 1: want you watching scary movies in the house because I
- 6:40Speaker 1: feel like that opens a portal to evil and it
- 6:42Speaker 1: opens and I was like, girlfriend, we're done. We're done here.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Too much yet all hailed Jodi Sweeten, our activist queen.
- 6:49Speaker 1: She is not afraid to walk the walk. I love
- 6:52Speaker 1: that for her. Yeah, me too, me too, switching gears.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Next up, we have an email from Mackie. If you
- 6:58Speaker 1: were listening to our episode to Barcelona with Love. We
- 7:01Speaker 1: talked about the origin story of the Barcelona movies, and Maggie,
- 7:06Speaker 1: first of all, shout out, We've discussed it. She is
- 7:09Speaker 1: one of our moderators in our Facebook group. She always
- 7:13Speaker 1: finds things either like little things that we need to
- 7:15Speaker 1: adjust on our website. Are little bits of news that
- 7:17Speaker 1: we've talked about, and she expands on them. She is brilliant.
- 7:20Speaker 1: If we had a budget, I would hire her to
- 7:21Speaker 1: work for us. Same but she sent us a clip
- 7:26Speaker 1: from the Heart in Motion podcast with a little more
- 7:29Speaker 1: details about the origin story from the Barcelona movies. So
- 7:34Speaker 1: this is a quote from the podcast. It was at
- 7:36Speaker 1: a bar at Radio City. So it was after the
- 7:38Speaker 1: premiere of Holiday Spectacular. This is Julie Sherman Wolf speaking
- 7:42Speaker 1: and it says, and I was talking to Ashley and
- 7:44Speaker 1: she said, just casually, I think I have a really
- 7:47Speaker 1: good idea for a movie. And she told me this
- 7:50Speaker 1: idea that ended up becoming the impetus for part one.
- 7:53Speaker 1: I'm like, I think this is a good idea, but
- 7:55Speaker 1: what foreign country? What language should it be? And like,
- 7:58Speaker 1: who do we know that speaks a foreign language? And
- 8:00Speaker 1: then she looked over at Alison Sweeney, who's just walking by,
- 8:04Speaker 1: has no idea what's happening. She goes, Ali, do you
- 8:07Speaker 1: speak a foreign language? And she goes, yes, Spanish or
- 8:10Speaker 1: like great Barcelona. And so that was it, and we
- 8:13Speaker 1: just kind of, you know, a little tiny germ of
- 8:15Speaker 1: an idea, but it was a really really good idea
- 8:18Speaker 1: and I loved it. So it was not the cruise.
- 8:21Speaker 1: It was holiday spectacular premiere in New York couples ago
- 8:26Speaker 1: long ago, I know, and now it came to be
- 8:30Speaker 1: so long ago. If I may talk about Barcelona for
- 8:35Speaker 1: a second. Here, we got some feedback on our episode,
- 8:45Speaker 1: our review of to Barcelona with Love about our thoughts
- 8:54Speaker 1: on the age stuff. I'm feeling like fiery and pissed
- 8:57Speaker 1: off about it. Yeah, I hear what you're saying. We
- 9:02Speaker 1: based on the feedback we got. It validated our choice
- 9:08Speaker 1: to be like shut up. Like the criticism about our
- 9:14Speaker 1: characters like the Yeah, the criticism was like these chicks
- 9:20Speaker 1: are old and they should roll over and die basically.
- 9:23Speaker 1: And all I'm saying is I have two feelings. One
- 9:28Speaker 1: I'm glad we said something, and two, I am not
- 9:32Speaker 1: glad that we're not the only people who noticed that
- 9:35Speaker 1: people are seeing it and they're feeling those words. And
- 9:42Speaker 1: I'm even more mad about it. Yeah that's how I
- 9:45Speaker 1: feel too, Like why are you telling me that I'm
- 9:50Speaker 1: too old to be fun? Because we're their ages, like
- 9:55Speaker 1: we are their peers, and so yes, I'm taking it personally,
- 9:59Speaker 1: but also, oh, my life is not over. I just
- 10:02Speaker 1: am so mad about it. Like the idea that you
- 10:05Speaker 1: need to be young to experience love and fun and
- 10:10Speaker 1: romance just pisses me off. It totally tucks me. I'm
- 10:14Speaker 1: really mad about it. Yeah me too, Me too. And
- 10:17Speaker 1: I'm glad that we're not alone. Yeah, me too. Our
- 10:21Speaker 1: next email is from Mackenzie and the subject title is
- 10:26Speaker 1: Sue Thomas f B. I'm so upset and can I
- 10:31Speaker 1: just say, if we were giving awards for email titles,
- 10:35Speaker 1: this is the creme de la crem hare. This email
- 10:40Speaker 1: sat in our inbox for a while because I was
- 10:42Speaker 1: waiting to compile these notes, and every time I saw it,
- 10:45Speaker 1: I was like, chef's kiss. It's so good. It's so good,
- 10:49Speaker 1: and I gotta tell you. When I saw it, I
- 10:52Speaker 1: was like, uh, you know, like when everything I clenches
- 10:56Speaker 1: up inside you, I'm like, what did they say? That's
- 10:58Speaker 1: what he's upset about. But here's what Mackenzie wrote. I
- 11:03Speaker 1: think I knew you two wouldn't be fans of the show,
- 11:06Speaker 1: but I was still sad when you said you didn't
- 11:09Speaker 1: like it? Is it the best quality show? No? Is
- 11:13Speaker 1: the theme song too long? Yes. Do I love the show? Absolutely? Yes.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I first started watching the show with my mom as
- 11:20Speaker 1: a teenager. I was incredibly anxious and at times scared
- 11:23Speaker 1: to leave the house. My mom and I would camp
- 11:25Speaker 1: out in a room and watch this show. We even
- 11:28Speaker 1: named a dog after Sue's dog. I have watched a
- 11:31Speaker 1: few episodes here and there since that time, and I
- 11:34Speaker 1: still love it. I'm sure the fond memories associated with
- 11:37Speaker 1: it are a big part of that. I understand it's
- 11:40Speaker 1: not for everyone, but this still very anxious girl has
- 11:44Speaker 1: a soft spot for it. Fun fact, the actress that
- 11:46Speaker 1: plays Sue is married to a fellow actor who is
- 11:49Speaker 1: also deaf. He won an oscar for starring in the
- 11:52Speaker 1: movie Coda loved the show as in your show, but
- 11:56Speaker 1: also Sue Thomas, that's not the ski email you were
- 12:01Speaker 1: thinking you were going to get. No, I was a
- 12:02Speaker 1: little bit worried about, like, look I get it, Like
- 12:06Speaker 1: I'm so happy that Mackenzie wrote in and was like
- 12:10Speaker 1: here's why I love it. Yeah. It would be the
- 12:12Speaker 1: same way when somebody would be like Wendy Beverly Hills, iight,
- 12:15Speaker 1: who know, is the worst show ever? And I'd be like, look,
- 12:17Speaker 1: here's why I love it. You know, I think shows
- 12:21Speaker 1: don't need to be critically acclaimed in order for them
- 12:24Speaker 1: to hit a soft spot. And yeah, there are shows
- 12:27Speaker 1: and movies and books that aren't necessarily good that I've
- 12:33Speaker 1: watched it a certain point in my life and they
- 12:35Speaker 1: have meaning for that point in my life, and I
- 12:38Speaker 1: will continue to love them for that reason. So I
- 12:40Speaker 1: totally get Mackenzie's attachment to this show, and I'm I'm
- 12:43Speaker 1: sorry we didn't like it more. I didn't hate it.
- 12:47Speaker 1: It just it I have. It's not for me. I
- 12:50Speaker 1: think maybe I leaned into the like I hate it,
- 12:53Speaker 1: but I didn't like it. I could see how it
- 12:56Speaker 1: could be a total comfort watch. Absolutely sure. I can
- 13:01Speaker 1: definitely say that too. And I know a lot of
- 13:02Speaker 1: people really liked it, so maybe that pilot was just rough.
- 13:07Speaker 1: And yeah, we did get a lot of feedback from
- 13:09Speaker 1: people who got a little defensive about about their sweet
- 13:12Speaker 1: little show, and that's okay. Yeah, I love doing this
- 13:16Speaker 1: first impression episodes. I hope we do more of them.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Oh can I I was. I was gonna ask you
- 13:22Speaker 1: little fun trivia if you had to guess rank those
- 13:27Speaker 1: episodes in the order of popularities downloaded. Yeah, yeah, Okay,
- 13:35Speaker 1: hold on, let me think what we did. We did Carter,
- 13:37Speaker 1: Chesapeake Shores, one calls the Heart, Sue Thomas. Was there
- 13:41Speaker 1: one more? The good Witch? The good Witch? Okay, I
- 13:45Speaker 1: think number one is probably Chesapeake Shores. Oh so go ahead, Okay,
- 13:52Speaker 1: you can tell me, am I right, you are wrong?
- 13:55Speaker 1: Oh damn the good Witch? Yes, and I think it
- 14:00Speaker 1: has the advantage of being out the longest. It's very
- 14:03Speaker 1: close between Chesapeake Shores and The Goodwitch. But the good
- 14:06Speaker 1: Witch was the most popular so far, was it? Well?
- 14:11Speaker 1: I just shared on our reshared on our Instagram yesterday
- 14:14Speaker 1: because Emily Ullerup had said that all seasons of Chesapeake
- 14:19Speaker 1: Shores were now available on Hallmark Plus, which I think
- 14:22Speaker 1: they have been, but I could be wrong. And I
- 14:24Speaker 1: was like, is this a sign do we need to
- 14:27Speaker 1: review this show? And I thought like the comments were
- 14:31Speaker 1: gonna be like yes, yes, yes. There were a lot
- 14:33Speaker 1: like no, don't do it. So there were a lot
- 14:35Speaker 1: of yeses though, but there's it's the ones that stand
- 14:39Speaker 1: out that say no, don't do it. I'm like, no,
- 14:42Speaker 1: we need one hundred percent listenership, not fifty percent listenership.
- 14:46Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Yeah, but you're never gonna
- 14:48Speaker 1: get it, I know. So I'm kind of thinking thinking
- 14:53Speaker 1: ahead to twenty twenty six. I feel, you know, January
- 14:56Speaker 1: is kind of a slow month. What if we just
- 14:58Speaker 1: do it in January? Start it up in January? No? Yeah,
- 15:04Speaker 1: are we doing every episode? I don't know. I don't
- 15:07Speaker 1: know what that looks like. If that's five episodes, it
- 15:10Speaker 1: would take all year to get through it, at least
- 15:13Speaker 1: it be. You know, we can't do it all year
- 15:16Speaker 1: long because we come come October. There's no room in
- 15:20Speaker 1: the schedule. Yeah, unless you pause. That's too hard. I
- 15:24Speaker 1: like continuity. I don't know, and I could build a
- 15:27Speaker 1: theme around things, you know what I mean. I hear you. Well,
- 15:30Speaker 1: we'll work out the details off Mike. But I do
- 15:32Speaker 1: think of chest Peak Shores recap of some sort is
- 15:36Speaker 1: likely coming to Girls Gone Hallmark in the future some way,
- 15:40Speaker 1: somehow maybe maybe all right, So Chess, Goodwitch, chest Peak Shores.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Then what Sue Thomas and then Carter? Where are you
- 15:49Speaker 1: putting one Calls the Heart in there? Oh? I forgot fifth?
- 15:52Speaker 1: Well you're so wrong. When Calls the Heart is third,
- 15:55Speaker 1: Carter is fourth, and Sue Thomas is fifth. Dead lass,
- 15:59Speaker 1: I just thought that it was interesting. I was looking
- 16:01Speaker 1: yesterday and I found it curious. Our next email is
- 16:05Speaker 1: from Sherry and she writes in on a mixed bag
- 16:07Speaker 1: of topics. I agree with the listeners from Listener mail
- 16:10Speaker 1: Bag number two. You should definitely watch The More Love Grows.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Great performances from both actors. Also check out the Jesse
- 16:17Speaker 1: Metcalf movie with Autumn Reser, a country Wedding, a sweet oldie,
- 16:21Speaker 1: but goodie, and I too enjoyed Doctor Quinn back in
- 16:24Speaker 1: the day I was a young adult. Rewatched an episode
- 16:27Speaker 1: lately and seemed very dated, but my binge it sometimes
- 16:31Speaker 1: love the Listener mailbag and first impression series you are
- 16:33Speaker 1: candid but not cruel, and you're human brightens the day.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Sherry from Maryland, Hey, I have a question. Okay, based
- 16:43Speaker 1: on this, would it be fun like when we need
- 16:47Speaker 1: to come up with a month of reviews to pick
- 16:53Speaker 1: a certain actor and hmm, and do like a slate
- 16:58Speaker 1: of movies based on that actor. For example, I'm thinking
- 17:02Speaker 1: Jesse Metcalf because since reviewing Chesapeake Shore, so many people
- 17:06Speaker 1: have emailed us and said, like, oh, you need to
- 17:08Speaker 1: watch this Jesse Metcalf movie. Yeah, if we can come
- 17:11Speaker 1: up with enough movies. I'm totally into that. Yeah, it'd
- 17:14Speaker 1: be fun if you guys have like a certain actor
- 17:18Speaker 1: and maybe like that has a deep resume of that
- 17:23Speaker 1: we haven't done, which becomes a challenging piece. Yeah, because honestly,
- 17:27Speaker 1: like we've done most Tyler's yeah, Tyler's movies, right, yeah,
- 17:31Speaker 1: most of Chris's movies. So fun. I like the idea
- 17:36Speaker 1: if if there's enough content there for sure? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 17:39Speaker 1: yeah yeah. Finally we gotta follow up email from listener Jamie.
- 17:43Speaker 1: We talked about true crime podcast recommendations a couple of
- 17:46Speaker 1: mail mail bag episodes before. Yeah, and I want to
- 17:50Speaker 1: say that in her first email, she was like, listen
- 17:52Speaker 1: to most of your episodes, and Wendy was like most,
- 17:54Speaker 1: So that's reference to here in this. Oh, I was
- 17:57Speaker 1: just joking, she writes me again. Sorry, I don't listen
- 18:01Speaker 1: to all of your podcasts. I don't have Hallmark Plus,
- 18:04Speaker 1: so I skip some of the content. I can watch
- 18:06Speaker 1: now and go back and listen when if they join
- 18:09Speaker 1: Hallmark like Chicken Sisters. Moving on true crime podcasts that
- 18:14Speaker 1: I listen to, per Wendy's request, there is a big
- 18:18Speaker 1: list heror guys, ready, where are my true crime fans
- 18:22Speaker 1: at last Scene Alive three Dark Down East, the Deck,
- 18:27Speaker 1: Buried Bones, Criminal, my favorite murder, Park Predators Park? What's
- 18:32Speaker 1: park predators? The way that? Like, I just clinched everything again.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I don't like the name of that. I don't know. No, no, no, no,
- 18:42Speaker 1: couture clock and crime Junkie And to Jamie, I say,
- 18:47Speaker 1: stay sexy and don't get murdered. We'll leave that list
- 18:51Speaker 1: in the show notes if you weren't able to grab them,
- 18:53Speaker 1: I would like to read you the description of park Predators. No, no, no,
- 18:57Speaker 1: it's not as bad as you think. I don't think, okay,
- 18:59Speaker 1: because to me, I'm like, it feels like child related. Yeah,
- 19:03Speaker 1: it's not. Explore the dark side of the world's most
- 19:05Speaker 1: beautiful places with investigative journalists and park enthusiast Delia Dean
- 19:09Speaker 1: bra With each week, Delia guides you deep into national
