- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:11Speaker 1: get this podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:20Speaker 1: a hater. And it is that time of week where
- 0:22Speaker 1: we have a guest join us, coming to us live
- 0:25Speaker 1: from Yahoo Sports, covering the NFL. Nate Tice, what's going on?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Not too much. Happy to be here. Happy to talk
- 0:32Speaker 2: a little bit of week one. No more hypotheticals. No
- 0:35Speaker 2: more preseason tape. No more, this is what this guy
- 0:38Speaker 2: did in college.
- 0:40Speaker 1: All that stuff that over here, we refuse to do.
- 0:44Speaker 1: You people over here who live in this full-on football world,
- 0:47Speaker 1: the thing about covering basketball, you basically take the summer off.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Y'all get no time off. People can't get enough of
- 0:54Speaker 1: y'all talking about football, whatever way it possibly comes.
- 0:57Speaker 2: It's a whole month of list shows, and those shows
- 1:00Speaker 2: become big. Those shows get you yelled at. and then
- 1:03Speaker 2: takes it's like top 10 offenses i just want to
- 1:05Speaker 2: talk about some offenses nope get yelled at about that
- 1:08Speaker 2: and then you see the basketball people and they're like
- 1:10Speaker 2: it's an international tournament these are fun players aren't they
- 1:15Speaker 2: you know yeah i i know we even when the
- 1:17Speaker 2: two months are supposed to be off turn into you
- 1:20Speaker 2: know superlative season everyone debating and yelling but yeah you're
- 1:24Speaker 2: right preseason tape gets extrapolated too that becomes a whole
- 1:27Speaker 2: thing Fancy people planting flags saying this guy's all pro already.
- 1:34Speaker 2: I try to take little things, but you go out
- 1:37Speaker 2: there and people are just proclamations everywhere.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I refuse to watch any of it. I refuse to engage.
- 1:43Speaker 1: I just know this is not going to be a win.
- 1:45Speaker 2: No Hall of Fame game for Bo.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Hell no, man. I'm going to throw something out here
- 1:48Speaker 1: right fast for the people who watch this on YouTube,
- 1:51Speaker 1: but for those of you who listen on audio, perhaps
- 1:53Speaker 1: you will find this to be a humorous and entertaining thing. So,
- 1:57Speaker 1: Last couple episodes, you shot them on the same day.
- 1:59Speaker 1: I decided that, you know, it was like, oh, I
- 2:01Speaker 1: got to throw on a shirt before I go do
- 2:02Speaker 1: the show. And I was like, let me put on
- 2:04Speaker 1: with some of this right time merchandise that we had.
- 2:08Speaker 1: And so I put on a right time T-shirt. And
- 2:11Speaker 1: today I am wearing my right time hoodie that you
- 2:14Speaker 1: can get. And it's not really cold outside. It was
- 2:17Speaker 1: a little brisk, but it was easier for me to
- 2:19Speaker 1: grab this today. And part of why I'm grabbing this
- 2:22Speaker 1: is just so you guys on YouTube know. Yes, I
- 2:25Speaker 1: saw your comments about my shirt being wrinkled. Number one,
- 2:28Speaker 1: you were really right. I didn't quite realize how wrinkled
- 2:32Speaker 1: it was. Perhaps I could have done something about it.
- 2:35Speaker 1: But there's something about ironing to be in my house.
- 2:40Speaker 1: You just don't really add up for me. But number two,
- 2:42Speaker 1: at the same time, you hating motherfuckers. How about you
- 2:45Speaker 1: just look at that shirt and imagine what it would
- 2:47Speaker 1: look like with no wrinkles and buy one. Y'all got
- 2:49Speaker 1: all these jokes. You got a purchase, an order confirmation?
- 2:53Speaker 1: You got that? How about that? You know what I'm saying?
- 2:57Speaker 1: But anyway, today I'm wearing the right time hoodie. You
- 3:00Speaker 1: can get that. High lattice. Check it out. You know
- 3:03Speaker 1: what I'm saying? But anyway, we'll get back to this football.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Monday Night Football was interesting. The J.J. McCarthy era football.
- 3:09Speaker 1: began in Minnesota and Caleb Williams on the other side. Now,
- 3:13Speaker 1: this is interesting because the world would have you believe
- 3:17Speaker 1: beginning last year that Caleb Williams is going into the
- 3:20Speaker 1: best situation that a rookie quarterback had ever gone into
- 3:22Speaker 1: because they had receivers and they had a running back situation.
- 3:25Speaker 1: And holy smokes, I move into this season and people
- 3:29Speaker 1: are basically telling me that JJ McCarthy is walking into
- 3:33Speaker 1: what is kind of the best situation a rookie quarterback
- 3:35Speaker 1: has ever had, even though he's not a rookie, but
- 3:38Speaker 1: he didn't play any games last year. First question for
- 3:41Speaker 1: me is what you thought of McCarthy in that game?
- 3:45Speaker 1: Because I felt like I was looking at an upper
- 3:48Speaker 1: echelon of what those, the guys running that system want,
- 3:53Speaker 1: which is a guy to do what you said. Just,
- 3:55Speaker 1: it's just, if you do what I say, everything will
- 3:57Speaker 1: be okay. He seemed to be operating according to that paradigm.
- 4:01Speaker 1: That's exactly what it was.
- 4:02Speaker 2: It's the, that offensive systems training wheels, you know, just
- 4:06Speaker 2: the way to bumpers, you know, like a bowling alley.
- 4:10Speaker 2: It's just really just to keep them on the rails
- 4:12Speaker 2: throughout the game. And you see, I mean, the, Game script,
- 4:16Speaker 2: or at least a game plan for the Vikings and
- 4:19Speaker 2: Kevin O'Connell was first, second down run, third down. Hopefully
- 4:22Speaker 2: we have a third and five and throw the ball.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Like it was very basic. There's a ton of play actions.
- 4:27Speaker 2: There's a ton of stuff on the move. But where
- 4:29Speaker 2: the appeal of McCarthy was, at least like in theory,
- 4:32Speaker 2: when they drafted him was, oh, he's a pretty good athlete.
- 4:35Speaker 2: So even if he's like Kirk Cousins as a thrower,
- 4:37Speaker 2: you know, we can maybe do some run stuff. We
- 4:40Speaker 2: can do some zone reads. And we saw the rushing touchdown.
- 4:43Speaker 2: So like that was the appeal of J.J. McCarthy. But
- 4:45Speaker 2: that first half was rough. I mean, you could tell
- 4:48Speaker 2: it was moving fast for him. The Bears defense is
- 4:50Speaker 2: pretty good. But I thought you mentioned the situation stuff
- 4:54Speaker 2: and you mentioned all the pass catchers and everything. And
- 4:56Speaker 2: I thought last year, that's why I thought I was
- 4:58Speaker 2: going crazy when people were saying that about the Bears was,
- 5:00Speaker 2: are we still we're still OK with this offensive line
- 5:04Speaker 2: like that? That was OK. But then on the flip side,
- 5:06Speaker 2: I actually had been saying this summer, I was like, well, Yeah,
- 5:10Speaker 2: McCarthy is dropped into one of the best situations possible
- 5:13Speaker 2: outside the left tackle because Derrissaw's hurt right now. But
- 5:16Speaker 2: they added three new offensive linemen who all looked pretty
- 5:18Speaker 2: good last night. Ryan Kelly, Will Fries, and Donovan Jackson
- 5:23Speaker 2: from Ohio State in the first round who had some
- 5:26Speaker 2: good moments last night. Kevin O'Connell still calling plays. So, yeah,
- 5:30Speaker 2: it is a great situation. I thought the best part
- 5:33Speaker 2: about the Vikings game last night was the run game.
- 5:35Speaker 2: And that's also to help out the young quarterback. hey,
- 5:38Speaker 2: you don't have to throw it every time. Hey, we're
- 5:39Speaker 2: going to get you second and fives. Hey, we're going
- 5:41Speaker 2: to get you third and threes because the running game
- 5:43Speaker 2: could be so good. So I did think that one
- 5:46Speaker 2: of those good situations looked like a good situation last night,
- 5:49Speaker 2: at least from the last couple of years.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I feel like you left out the best part of
- 5:53Speaker 1: that biking situation, which is the dude playing football with
- 5:57Speaker 1: a million dollars worth of jewelry around his neck. Like,
- 6:01Speaker 1: I ain't going to lie. I would not roll the
- 6:04Speaker 1: dice on playing the down of NFL football, right? But
- 6:08Speaker 1: somebody out there saying to himself, I can get down
- 6:11Speaker 1: there and get that chain and get off the field
- 6:13Speaker 1: before anybody sees what time it is. Like, you got
- 6:17Speaker 1: to have actual security if you're going to do that.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Only the quarterback need to be wearing a chain like
- 6:21Speaker 1: that because the quarterback has actual security. Like, he has
- 6:23Speaker 1: five security guards in front of him. Justin Jefferson, I
- 6:27Speaker 1: could not believe that. Like, you out here doing something
- 6:30Speaker 1: with that chain on.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Also, like, every time they show them lined up, like,
- 6:34Speaker 2: you know, when they do the close camera view. that
- 6:37Speaker 2: thing was just glistening yes it was just i i'm
- 6:40Speaker 2: sure the camera guy's like oh dang it zoom out
- 6:41Speaker 2: zoom out too bright too bright too bright no too
- 6:44Speaker 2: shiny i don't know how guys do that like prime
- 6:46Speaker 2: did that back in the 90s and i always thought
- 6:48Speaker 2: that was insane and that was just it was never
- 6:50Speaker 2: a chain no no no it was just the one
- 6:52Speaker 2: gold chain right right you just do the one gold
- 6:54Speaker 2: chain right i i always thought that and that was
- 6:57Speaker 2: insane back then like he was one of the first
- 6:58Speaker 2: guys to do it then more guys did it you
- 7:00Speaker 2: know throughout the aughts and stuff but now we're our
- 7:03Speaker 2: I mean, well, Lamar's got the grill mouthpiece like these guys.
- 7:07Speaker 2: I mean, and that stuff's real. This is a big
- 7:11Speaker 2: difference between Dante Culpepper walking up with a giant diamond
- 7:14Speaker 2: pepper to the game and then taking it off before
- 7:17Speaker 2: the game, as opposed to what these guys are doing.
- 7:19Speaker 2: They're walking out and wearing it.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Dude, I have to say that as the pandemic hit,
- 7:24Speaker 1: I believed that what we were going to hit was
- 7:26Speaker 1: a time that gave people like a bit of reevaluation
- 7:29Speaker 1: and stuff like that. And I thought that we were
- 7:31Speaker 1: going to see a rejection of a certain level of
- 7:34Speaker 1: materialism in society as we realized what the stakes were,
- 7:37Speaker 1: what the world presented to us. But people were saving
- 7:40Speaker 1: so much money staying at the crib. And then they
- 7:43Speaker 1: sent out them checks that actually it turned on the
- 7:47Speaker 1: afterburners for a level of conspicuous consumption. Like all these
- 7:52Speaker 1: dudes got robbable chains on, right? Like the kind of
- 7:55Speaker 1: chain that you can't just walk around I guess the
- 8:00Speaker 1: 2021 World Series when the Braves had all them dudes
- 8:02Speaker 1: with them chains was the sign of where this was
- 8:04Speaker 1: going to go. Had no idea. But Justin Jefferson, and
- 8:07Speaker 1: I'm trying my best to say Justin. I also saw
- 8:09Speaker 1: y'all in the YouTube comments. He had a brother named Jordan.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I'm at that age where I call you your brother's
- 8:15Speaker 1: name like I'm a parent. Anyway, Justin Jefferson, he's... Let
- 8:20Speaker 1: me ask you this about him. This is a serious
- 8:22Speaker 1: question because I don't quite know it. He seems to
- 8:24Speaker 1: just be really good at being really good, but I
- 8:26Speaker 1: don't know myself exactly what it is because he's probably
- 8:28Speaker 1: the best receiver in the league right now, right? What
- 8:31Speaker 1: is the thing he does?
- 8:33Speaker 2: Uh body control like that's the thing is that he
- 8:36Speaker 2: when he breaks in and out of stuff i think
- 8:38Speaker 2: he's the best receiver in the game because he can
- 8:39Speaker 2: legit do anything he can go deep he can run
- 8:42Speaker 2: intermediate run over the middle take stuff short and get
- 8:44Speaker 2: yak he can block like that was actually one of
- 8:47Speaker 2: his things coming out of osu is that he was
- 8:49Speaker 2: a good blocker um he can line up in the
- 8:51Speaker 2: slot it's just one of those things that now he
- 8:53Speaker 2: is he's not just a jack of all trades he's
- 8:56Speaker 2: the king of all trades. Like he is a very
- 8:59Speaker 2: good to elite at every part. His hand eye coordination
- 9:02Speaker 2: is excellent. Um, his, you know, how his, how his
- 9:06Speaker 2: body moves, like how he moves out of breaks is
- 9:08Speaker 2: just so unique. Like he's able to turn with his
- 9:11Speaker 2: legs facing one way, his upper body facing the other
- 9:13Speaker 2: way and make a catch, which is, it's just this
- 9:16Speaker 2: rare body control that he has. But, He's just insane,
- 9:20Speaker 2: and I know he's wearing that chain because he doesn't
- 9:21Speaker 2: have to worry about playing Aqib Tlaib anymore.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I think Aqib Tlaib would let him wear his chain.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Tlaib's problem was not the chain. It was the man
- 9:34Speaker 1: wearing the chain.
- 9:37Speaker 2: I know my guy, Michael Crabtree.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I spent two years with him in Oakland. I just
- 9:41Speaker 1: didn't feel like he should be wearing that chain. And
- 9:45Speaker 1: so he didn't even try to keep his chain. He
- 9:47Speaker 1: just took the chain off of his neck. And this
- 9:51Speaker 1: reminds me, for those of you who don't know, right now,
- 9:55Speaker 1: Aqib Tlaib is working on Underdog, the people that do
- 10:00Speaker 1: Gil's Arena. They've got a football arena. And among others,
- 10:04Speaker 1: that show has Aqib Tlaib and Skip Bayless. And I
- 10:07Speaker 1: know Jay Gruden is supposed to be on the show.
- 10:10Speaker 1: And there's a lot going on there with that pairing.
- 10:14Speaker 1: A lot going on. Yes.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Yes, because... The Jay and John Gruden, because they're both
- 10:21Speaker 2: huge personalities. John is, they're definitely the big brother, little brother,
- 10:26Speaker 2: you know, personalities too. Jay is a shitster. He will
- 10:30Speaker 2: say whatever. Whatever comes to his mind. He tweets whatever
- 10:35Speaker 2: comes to his mind. He doesn't care about like going out.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Him and RG3 were going at it.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Yeah, no, Jay Gruden, he's given up on getting another job. Yeah, yeah.
- 10:44Speaker 1: That is the impression that I get from him.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Which I actually like.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Right, like whatever the jobs are that might be available
- 10:50Speaker 1: to him. Yeah. He has decided, like a guy like
- 10:52Speaker 1: Rex Ryan, for example. Rex Ryan could get a job
- 10:55Speaker 1: in the NFL.
- 10:56Speaker 2: He's playing footsie.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Yeah, but he doesn't want to be a defensive coordinator,
- 10:59Speaker 1: and I don't think anybody's going to put him in
- 11:00Speaker 1: charge anymore. Jay Gruden, I think, has just decided, nope,
- 11:03Speaker 1: the jobs they give, I don't know what he does
- 11:04Speaker 1: for money or how much money he has, but he'd
- 11:06Speaker 1: just be out here saying any damn thing. He means it.
- 11:10Speaker 2: And he does.
- 11:10Speaker 3: Oh, I know.
- 11:11Speaker 2: That's why, again, I appreciate it. That's why if you
- 11:13Speaker 2: ever want to know so many players and former coaches' analysis,
- 11:16Speaker 2: other than that a lot of them don't pay attention
- 11:18Speaker 2: to the game as much as they should, is a
- 11:20Speaker 2: lot of them are just, well, that's my buddy. Well,
- 11:23Speaker 2: that's my, you know, oh, I played with him in college. Oh,
- 11:26Speaker 2: that's my coach that I worked with. That's why we
- 11:28Speaker 2: vacationed together in Destin, Florida, where all the coaches have
- 11:31Speaker 2: their vacation homes. Like, you know, they have those kind
- 11:35Speaker 2: of connections still. It's actually kind of freeing for me.
- 11:37Speaker 2: As soon as my dad got out of the league,
- 11:39Speaker 2: I was like.
- 11:39Speaker 3: All right.
- 11:39Speaker 2: All right. You know, these motherfuckers didn't give me a job.
- 11:43Speaker 2: So get ready.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:46Speaker 2: You know, so that is freeing. And Jay's just always
- 11:49Speaker 2: been like that. He's the loose cannon. And even as
- 11:53Speaker 2: a coach, he had that. Remember they came up with
- 11:55Speaker 2: the picture of him, you know, smoking a J outside
- 11:57Speaker 2: the bar. You know, so it's like, you know, stuff.
- 12:00Speaker 2: And he just owned it. Like, he doesn't even care
- 12:02Speaker 2: about it. I don't know. I appreciate that kind of analysis.
- 12:04Speaker 2: If it's not just Toll always just going, you know.
- 12:07Speaker 2: going into the doldrums and, you know, crap talking a
- 12:10Speaker 2: little bit to everybody, at least just like a little
- 12:12Speaker 2: bit of like a little bit of sides are pretty fun.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I will say no industry is quite as protective of,
- 12:17Speaker 1: I know that guy and Twitter has made it the
- 12:18Speaker 1: worst because of the flimsy ties, but ties nonetheless in
- 12:22Speaker 1: my business. Oh, Yeah, like.
- 12:26Speaker 2: We all snitch tags.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Yeah, we all kind of know each other, right? Yes.
- 12:30Speaker 1: But we don't really know each other, so we do
- 12:32Speaker 1: not hold each other to proper account. When we didn't
- 12:35Speaker 1: all kind of know each other, then we was, and
- 12:38Speaker 1: I'm guilty of this too. Oh, yeah. You know? Oh, yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 2: I'm pretty safe on mine or on my show where
- 12:44Speaker 2: I was like, he's not going to listen to this show.
- 12:46Speaker 2: All right.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Ain't nothing safe for me, big dog. I got, there's
- 12:50Speaker 1: the people making industry out here, hawking my shit just,
- 12:53Speaker 1: just to see if something go wrong, but I'll bring
- 12:55Speaker 1: it back to the football. I'll bring it back to
- 12:56Speaker 1: the football, that same game. Um, Caleb Williams. Um, I read,
- 13:01Speaker 1: you know, I've told people before, I think Tyler Dunn's
- 13:04Speaker 1: newsletter is really, really good. Like shockingly thorough to be
- 13:07Speaker 1: a newsletter. It feels more like a magazine than anything else. Um,
- 13:11Speaker 1: And Buddy, they brought the hammer down on the Caleb
- 13:15Speaker 1: Williams era. On the Bears in general, though I think
- 13:18Speaker 1: Ryan Poles, the general manager, is probably one that catches
- 13:21Speaker 1: it the worst. It did feel like a lot of
- 13:23Speaker 1: scorned people were offering up their information. But the particulars
- 13:30Speaker 1: on Caleb Williams as a figure in the facility and
- 13:34Speaker 1: in the locker room, I don't think we can leave
- 13:36Speaker 1: alone for now. What I did find to be interesting, though,
- 13:39Speaker 1: was their... Their expression that, A, he didn't seem to
- 13:43Speaker 1: be one who listened too much or took too kindly
- 13:45Speaker 1: to coaching. But number two, what seemed to be very
- 13:47Speaker 1: clear was he was dropping back and didn't know what
- 13:51Speaker 1: it was that he was looking at. Like, I did
- 13:53Speaker 1: not realize he took 68 sacks last season. And I
- 13:56Speaker 1: am a firm believer of the Aaron Schatz theory. Sacks
- 13:59Speaker 1: are a quarterback statistic. You took 68 stats. And you
- 14:04Speaker 1: go look at just about any quarterback and go look
- 14:05Speaker 1: at their stats every year. The numbers are going to
- 14:08Speaker 1: be clustered. They're going to be the same, right? The lines,
- 14:11Speaker 1: those lines aren't always bad. No, some guys just take
- 14:14Speaker 1: a long time to throw. He takes a long time
- 14:16Speaker 1: to throw. I heard people say they thought that he
- 14:19Speaker 1: looked very good in the first half and then he
- 14:21Speaker 1: looked worse in the second half. I did not think
- 14:23Speaker 1: he looked very good in the first half. I thought
- 14:25Speaker 1: it looked like he was dropping back and checking down
- 14:27Speaker 1: a lot and not realizing some of the things that
- 14:29Speaker 1: may have been available down the field. And then in
- 14:32Speaker 1: the second half, Brian Flores decided to be like, all right,
- 14:35Speaker 1: enough fucking around. and decided to get into his head.
- 14:38Speaker 1: But I don't, I don't know how much cause there
- 14:40Speaker 1: is for optimism with where the Caleb Williams experience is
- 14:45Speaker 1: going to go. And I'm also not sure if they're
- 14:46Speaker 1: coaching to what he does best, but I have a
- 14:50Speaker 1: hard time believing Ben Johnson with his big brain would
- 14:53Speaker 1: be so locked into what he's doing to not try
- 14:55Speaker 1: to make some level of adaptation to the quarterback that
- 14:58Speaker 1: he has. Yeah.
- 14:59Speaker 2: And that's what I've been curious to see. This is
- 15:01Speaker 2: where I know I joked about the preseason stuff that
- 15:03Speaker 2: I was trying to like extrapolate from all right what
- 15:06Speaker 2: did i see in the preseason all right now what
- 15:08Speaker 2: i see in week one and ben johnson i do
- 15:11Speaker 2: i do have trust in like i do think this
- 15:13Speaker 2: guy is very smart i do think this guy's very
- 15:15Speaker 2: thorough and i do think he's the right coach for
- 15:17Speaker 2: caleb because some of those guys have personalities like a
- 15:20Speaker 2: guy like caleb and again this is i've never met
- 15:22Speaker 2: caleb williams i've never met ben johnson um but just
- 15:25Speaker 2: context of stuff or just reading of the context is
- 15:28Speaker 2: some of these guys that have big personalities and maybe
- 15:31Speaker 2: reportedly think they know it all and give coaches hard times.
- 15:35Speaker 2: They're kind of like a toddler testing boundaries going like,
- 15:37Speaker 2: can I get away with this? Can I get away
- 15:39Speaker 2: with this? And sometimes those, those guys, they don't think
- 15:43Speaker 2: they like hard coaching, but they need hard coaching. They
- 15:46Speaker 2: need a big personality to kind of get after them
- 15:49Speaker 2: and hold them accountable. Not let them go away on
- 15:52Speaker 2: any BS and everything. And so what I've been trying
- 15:55Speaker 2: to look at is Ben Johnson seems to be trying
- 15:58Speaker 2: to find plays that work with Caleb. Caleb is shorter.
- 16:00Speaker 2: He's sub six, two. And if you just look at
- 16:02Speaker 2: the history of the game, and I know everyone just
- 16:04Speaker 2: always gets mad at me when I bring this up.
- 16:06Speaker 2: Short guys don't throw it over the middle. The only
- 16:08Speaker 2: one that did is Drew Brees. And actually, the one
- 16:11Speaker 2: that does it the best right now is Bryce Young,
- 16:13Speaker 2: who does not look good overall. But he can at
- 16:17Speaker 2: least throw over the middle. That is just the weakness
- 16:19Speaker 2: of being short. It's not batted balls. It's that. But
- 16:22Speaker 2: when you run what I think Ben Johnson wants to do,
- 16:25Speaker 2: a lot of runs, play action off the runs, down
- 16:28Speaker 2: the field stuff. Play action works best with stuff over
- 16:31Speaker 2: the middle. Cause that's what you're affecting with a run
- 16:33Speaker 2: play is the linebackers coming up, the safety's coming up.
- 16:36Speaker 2: So then you attack behind them. It's just physics. But
- 16:39Speaker 2: if you're not attacking over the middle, all right, what
- 16:43Speaker 2: are we, what are we trying to fake at? You know,
- 16:45Speaker 2: what are we trying to affect here? So Ben Johnson
- 16:48Speaker 2: to me seemed like he was doing more outbreaking routes.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Cause then, okay, kill has got a hose and was
- 16:53Speaker 2: thrown to the outside. Outside throws are a little bit
- 16:56Speaker 2: more space, less mistakes happen. If I miss, I can
- 16:59Speaker 2: just miss towards the sideline. Throwing over the middle is harder.
- 17:02Speaker 2: If I make a mistake, tip ball pick. If I
- 17:05Speaker 2: make a mistake, it's just at a guy's feet. A
- 17:07Speaker 2: guy can get batted down by a linebacker. All these
- 17:09Speaker 2: things can happen. There's more risk, but there's way more reward.
- 17:13Speaker 2: But the thing with Caleb is he's missing those throws.
- 17:16Speaker 2: And that's what's scary to me. Because I am a guy,
- 17:20Speaker 2: I'm a little different to you. I have a little
- 17:21Speaker 2: more optimism with Caleb, but I thought it would just
- 17:22Speaker 2: be a little bit more than what we saw in
- 17:24Speaker 2: this game. Because the opening drive, yeah, there's one or
- 17:27Speaker 2: two moments. But then, like you said, there's some scramble
- 17:29Speaker 2: moments or check down moments. And that's what I can't
- 17:31Speaker 2: wait to watch when I rewatch this game later this week,
- 17:34Speaker 2: like film-wise, is that what was the back end looking like?
- 17:37Speaker 2: Is it just because you weren't anticipating and that's why
- 17:40Speaker 2: it was closed and that's why you're checking down? Or
- 17:42Speaker 2: are those guys truly covered? I'm going to guess that
- 17:45Speaker 2: he wasn't anticipating because just the rhythm of the plays.
- 17:48Speaker 2: I think Roman Doomsday is a good player. I think
- 17:50Speaker 2: DJ Moore is a good player. I trust, again, what
- 17:52Speaker 2: Ben Johnson's designing. So, yeah, there's a couple times I'm
- 17:55Speaker 2: sure he made the right decision. It's good that he's
- 17:57Speaker 2: going through the check down and good that he's doing
- 17:59Speaker 2: those things. But, man, you got to– it's three seconds
- 18:02Speaker 2: or less. Like that's how quickly you have to make
- 18:04Speaker 2: a decision as a quarterback. And it just seems to
- 18:05Speaker 2: me it's three and a half for him, four for him.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Great that you can do all this creation stuff, but, like, man,
- 18:11Speaker 2: he still has to get better from the pocket. So
- 18:14Speaker 2: that's just the– I got to rewatch this game. But
- 18:17Speaker 2: the first half, that first drive opening script, yeah. But
- 18:20Speaker 2: when the defense adjusted, they started sending blitzes. Like if
- 18:23Speaker 2: you put that on tape that you can't handle blitzes,
- 18:26Speaker 2: Hold on to your hat because here comes the heat
- 18:29Speaker 2: every single week. And that was like the discouraging part
- 18:33Speaker 2: about it, I thought.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I think for me, I get the feeling. I
- 18:39Speaker 1: felt this way about Baker Mayfield, though they are very
- 18:42Speaker 1: different quarterbacks. But Baker Mayfield, to a lesser degree, but
- 18:47Speaker 1: he was college athletic.
- 18:49Speaker 2: You know what I mean? He still thinks he's athletic.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Yeah, but he had athleticism that it took to make
- 18:55Speaker 1: plays in college.
- 18:56Speaker 2: That's a great point.
- 18:57Speaker 1: And I think that Williams had the athleticism to make.
- 18:59Speaker 1: And if you're going to play off schedule or more accurately,
- 19:03Speaker 1: I don't think the issue here is playing off schedule.
- 19:05Speaker 1: The issue is playing late, right? Like if you're going
- 19:08Speaker 1: to be running late, you got to really have this
- 19:11Speaker 1: added dimension to be able to pull that off and
- 19:13Speaker 1: still be good. Case in point, Cam Newton, a touch late.
- 19:17Speaker 1: But with the arm that he had and the body
- 19:20Speaker 1: that he had and everything else, he was still throwing
- 19:22Speaker 1: dudes open, right? Still making it happen at that point.
- 19:26Speaker 1: I feel like the athleticism that Williams had, I mean,
- 19:29Speaker 1: I'll never forget that first game, the game that he
- 19:31Speaker 1: took over Spencer Rattler against Texas, and he was jumping
- 19:34Speaker 1: off the screen with that athletic ability. I think Deshaun Watson,
- 19:37Speaker 1: at his best, is a great example of this, of
- 19:39Speaker 1: a guy that was college athletic. Now you're going to
- 19:43Speaker 1: have to play a bit more on time. to get
- 19:45Speaker 1: this done. And I don't know, you know quarterbacking way
- 19:48Speaker 1: better than I ever would. Is that something? that like,
- 19:50Speaker 1: like how often somebody becomes that?
- 19:54Speaker 2: They got to be in there. It's got to be
- 19:56Speaker 2: ingrained because they've won. Every quarterback wins differently. And that's
- 20:00Speaker 2: what I know. I'm not just explaining this to you,
- 20:02Speaker 2: but just, and I think that's the misconception is that
- 20:06Speaker 2: even like, you know, this brings you back to the
- 20:08Speaker 2: Jalen hurts conversation. where it's just that everyone, well, oh,
- 20:11Speaker 2: is he top 10 quarterback, top five quarterback? And the
- 20:13Speaker 2: argument is there's others that can do what he does well,
- 20:16Speaker 2: but then other weakness, everybody has a weakness. All these
- 20:18Speaker 2: guys have a weakness to it and they have a
- 20:21Speaker 2: way to win. And the fact that Caleb so far
- 20:24Speaker 2: in what, five years I've watched him has been winning
- 20:27Speaker 2: the exact same way. And then he comes into his
- 20:28Speaker 2: second year as the pros trying to win the same way.
- 20:31Speaker 2: That is a little scary. They can get better though.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Like I do think you can get better, but the
- 20:36Speaker 2: thing is he's always going to have this in the
- 20:38Speaker 2: back of his head. This is my, you know, the
- 20:41Speaker 2: I call it the freak conundrum, not conundrum, but like
- 20:43Speaker 2: the freak threshold. Like if you're going to win that way,
- 20:46Speaker 2: you have to be big and or and or you
- 20:48Speaker 2: have to be fast and or you have to have
- 20:50Speaker 2: an arm because that's where traits come into play. That's
- 20:55Speaker 2: where size and arm strength. And like you said, Cam
- 20:58Speaker 2: Newton would be a second late and have that elongated motion.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Doesn't matter. He had a hose.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Boom.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Hit it right there.
- 21:05Speaker 2: Every guy I always bring up when I'm on the show,
- 21:06Speaker 2: Dante Culpepper. OK, he was very accurate. But he can
- 21:10Speaker 2: be a little late sometimes. Guess what? He's 260 running
- 21:13Speaker 2: a 4-6. So it didn't matter. He could shed a
- 21:15Speaker 2: sack and create a play off that. That's where traits
- 21:18Speaker 2: come in. This is the Shadur Sanders argument as well.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Why I was low on Shadur, why we saw him
- 21:24Speaker 2: not take a hold of any reps is because he
- 21:27Speaker 2: wasn't very big, didn't have a very strong arm, and
- 21:28Speaker 2: wasn't very athletic. That gives you room for error if
- 21:31Speaker 2: you do make a mental mistake, if you are mentally
- 21:34Speaker 2: a little bit slow. That's what those traits do. Purdy
- 21:38Speaker 2: can play like Purdy because he has Shanahan, who's letting
- 21:41Speaker 2: him get rid of the ball right away. Same with
- 21:43Speaker 2: guys like Goff. Those guys have to play on time.
- 21:45Speaker 2: So I do think Caleb will speed it up, but
- 21:48Speaker 2: it is a little worrisome that this is still just
- 21:50Speaker 2: in his moment, or still in his kind of head
- 21:52Speaker 2: to play this way if the first read isn't perfectly open.
- 21:56Speaker 2: And then he wants to progress. There's times where I
- 21:58Speaker 2: see him moving and progressing, but he's not shortcutting anything.
- 22:03Speaker 2: And that's the next step to NFL quarterback play. Yes,
- 22:08Speaker 2: technically plays go one to two to three to four
- 22:10Speaker 2: to five sometimes. But really, I shortcut it to the
- 22:14Speaker 2: three because I know it's cover two and I have
- 22:17Speaker 2: to get to the backside dig. Or it's cover three
- 22:19Speaker 2: and I know they're doing this, this, and that, so
- 22:21Speaker 2: I have to get to this route. That's what the
- 22:24Speaker 2: advanced guys do. Watch freaking Matthew Stafford play this weekend
- 22:27Speaker 2: and watch him shortcut everything. And last thing, though, tying
- 22:31Speaker 2: in with Baker, Caleb also throws the ball way too hard.
- 22:34Speaker 2: He's got it. He's got to tempo that stuff down.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Oh, he's that guy. He's Sean Dustin. Oh, my God.
- 22:40Speaker 2: And that's what Baker does, too. They throw everything one
- 22:42Speaker 2: speed as hard as they freaking can. Penix is like
- 22:45Speaker 2: this as well. Everything as hard as they can every time.
- 22:48Speaker 2: And got to have a little layering. Got to have
- 22:50Speaker 2: a little bit of touch on these throws. You got
- 22:52Speaker 2: to be able to throw a changeup or a curveball
- 22:54Speaker 2: just to help yourself out.
- 22:55Speaker 1: So it's funny you put Penix in there because I
- 22:57Speaker 1: was just about to say, ah, short guy behavior. Kyler
- 23:00Speaker 1: Murray on the same list. He's pumping. He's firing. He's
- 23:05Speaker 1: throwing some pepper every time.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Baseball player. That's it, too. Doesn't throw in the middle either.
- 23:11Speaker 2: That's actually who, when we, in the prospects, I like
- 23:14Speaker 2: him as a prospect. I was a Drake May number
- 23:16Speaker 2: one guy, which everyone made fun of at the time.
- 23:18Speaker 2: But now everyone's gone. Like, oh, Drake. I had Drake
- 23:20Speaker 2: May at number one. Yes. B.S. B.S. I kept notes
- 23:24Speaker 2: on it. I have a list of this, of everyone
- 23:26Speaker 2: that got after me. was when Caleb was coming out.
- 23:29Speaker 2: I was kind of saying what his, with their high-end comparisons,
- 23:33Speaker 2: with their middle comparisons, with their low-end ones, my middle
- 23:36Speaker 2: comparison was like, it's kind of like a big Kyler.
- 23:39Speaker 2: That was kind of like what I think he most
- 23:40Speaker 2: likely ends up looking like. And I'm watching him like, Yeah,
- 23:45Speaker 2: I'm seeing a lot of Big Kyler, but he's also
- 23:47Speaker 2: not throwing the deep ball like Kyler does.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Well, that's what I was about to say.
- 23:50Speaker 2: That's also concerning.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Here's the problem. Big Kyler is like John Elway. Big
- 23:57Speaker 1: Kyler is like the greatest quarterback that you've ever had.
- 23:59Speaker 1: But I still say what makes Kyler Murray not good,
- 24:02Speaker 1: or that's not fair, but not what we want him
- 24:05Speaker 1: to be, doesn't feel like size problems. Nope, nope. All
- 24:09Speaker 1: the stuff. He is so fast. His arm is so strong.
- 24:12Speaker 1: All of that. Right. He just did just something there.
- 24:15Speaker 2: He's second late on stuff. Yep. Yep. I'm a Kyler sympathizer. I, I,
- 24:22Speaker 2: because I, he wants to be a real boy. Like
- 24:25Speaker 2: he wants to be a real quarterback. And it's just like,
- 24:28Speaker 2: He's just– I mean, this weekend's game was frustrating. If
- 24:31Speaker 2: you're down on Kyler, this would be a good one
- 24:33Speaker 2: to rewatch back. But it was one of those where
- 24:35Speaker 2: it's just like he can't just always just have a
- 24:37Speaker 2: consistent game where he does it all perfect. He'll have
- 24:39Speaker 2: a drive or a half where it's like there's a
- 24:41Speaker 2: quarterback right there, and then he takes a sack in
- 24:44Speaker 2: the red zone or takes a sack to put on
- 24:46Speaker 2: third down to knock you out of field goal range,
- 24:47Speaker 2: and you're like– Come on, Kyler.
- 24:50Speaker 1: I need you, buddy. Yeah, well, I take this right
- 24:52Speaker 1: fast before we go to break. And I don't know
- 24:55Speaker 1: if I can do this without us just going on
- 24:57Speaker 1: and on about it. But I'll try to do this.
- 24:59Speaker 1: If there is a guy who has the physical traits
- 25:02Speaker 1: to buy being just a little bit late, like he's
- 25:05Speaker 1: often late. It happens very it just doesn't matter because
- 25:09Speaker 1: sending extra rushers don't matter because they bounce off of
- 25:11Speaker 1: him like there's a force field. That would be number
- 25:13Speaker 1: 17 in Buffalo. He can buy all the time in
- 25:17Speaker 1: the world. Watching through the years, you're not bringing him
- 25:20Speaker 1: down with number 34.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Right right right yeah 34 it better be 58 yeah
- 25:31Speaker 4: number 22 72 yeah and not one of these guys
- 25:35Speaker 4: that wants to be cool and we're a little man
- 25:36Speaker 4: number being a big man that's not who it's gonna
- 25:39Speaker 4: take to bring him down number 73 is gonna have
- 25:42Speaker 4: to come in there and get.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Something done insane isn't he i can't believe it like
- 25:48Speaker 2: where do you have them like meant like i mean
- 25:50Speaker 2: we probably have you have a little bit before me
- 25:52Speaker 2: but like we have overlap a lot of our football
- 25:54Speaker 2: timelines like yeah.
- 25:57Speaker 1: It's first of all, it's the biggest bet that anybody
- 26:00Speaker 1: has ever cashed in in the history of the NFL.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Yes. Period.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Like this is a look. It took time. They wrote
- 26:07Speaker 1: it out. Like he wound up in a great situation
- 26:09Speaker 1: for him. And look, people get mad at me when
- 26:11Speaker 1: I talk about this, but I think it's undeniably true.
- 26:13Speaker 1: When you look at the coverage, it really helps when
- 26:15Speaker 1: everybody wants it for you, whether it was local, whether
- 26:18Speaker 1: it was everywhere else, teammates afforded him the patience to,
- 26:22Speaker 1: for the first two or two and three years to get,
- 26:25Speaker 1: you know, to get to where it was. Cause he stunk.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Like we were not wrong when he said he stunk. Nah,
- 26:31Speaker 1: it's never been like this before. And then on top
- 26:34Speaker 1: of it, everybody likes him.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Loves him. That was my, so I, I liked him
- 26:40Speaker 2: as a prospect, but I was like, this is like
- 26:42Speaker 2: one out of a hundred. This works, but like, Hey,
- 26:44Speaker 2: he seems like a good kid. Like all this stuff
- 26:47Speaker 2: that first his rookie year, he scored a touchdown. And
- 26:50Speaker 2: the entire sideline and the team went and celebrated with
- 26:53Speaker 2: him going nuts. And I was just like, huh, that's interesting.
- 26:58Speaker 2: I remember where I was sitting. I think I had
- 27:01Speaker 2: just moved here to Vegas. And I remember just being like,
- 27:03Speaker 2: that's interesting. They really like him. Huh, there might be
- 27:06Speaker 2: something to this. And then I think it was 2019
- 27:08Speaker 2: comes in. Still spraying stuff. But like, I had a
- 27:11Speaker 2: couple moments. And then now we were watching him. This
- 27:14Speaker 2: dude's changing protections like Peyton Manning in his prime.
- 27:17Speaker 1: And then, and then.
- 27:18Speaker 2: And then throwing a guy off of him and launching
- 27:21Speaker 2: a throw 45 yards. And it's just like, I mean,
- 27:24Speaker 2: he's maxed out on everything. 99 overall, 99 overall.
- 27:28Speaker 1: But he'll still panic every now and then, right? Like
- 27:31Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson looked excellent in that game, by the way.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Excellent in that game. You got a whole, and Josh
- 27:36Speaker 1: is still giving you a chance to do a game.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Stafford's a guy like that. My Stafford comp that makes
- 27:42Speaker 1: people mad, but it's the truth. Carson Palmer was that guy.
- 27:46Speaker 1: If you take advantage of the chances they'll give you
- 27:48Speaker 1: to win the game, you might got a chance, right?
- 27:51Speaker 4: Yes.
- 27:51Speaker 1: But otherwise, man, it's about to be some hell to
- 27:54Speaker 1: pay out here.
- 27:56Speaker 2: Or it could go south very quickly if that high
- 27:59Speaker 2: wire act hits.
- 28:01Speaker 1: But I saw Stafford made a throw across the field,
- 28:04Speaker 1: and I'm not a Stafford guy. But what he can do.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Watch him on Sunday.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Woo! Good God, he looked good.
- 28:12Speaker 2: That dude doesn't even move, and he... He's throwing sidearm
- 28:16Speaker 2: throws 40 yards on a rope. Well, yeah, Sever's one
- 28:20Speaker 2: of those guys, like all those quarterback guys just kind
- 28:22Speaker 2: of like laugh at because it's just like, well, yeah,
- 28:25Speaker 2: I can't do that. Like, but he can. He threw
- 28:28Speaker 2: a no look, no look seam ball 30 yards, like
- 28:32Speaker 2: 28 yards down the field on a rope as he
- 28:33Speaker 2: was getting hit. But as he's getting hit, like he's backwards.
- 28:37Speaker 2: He's kind of like, you can't see my feet right now,
- 28:39Speaker 2: but they're kind of parallel to the line of scrimmage.
- 28:42Speaker 2: And he's flat footed, getting hit. no looking the linebacker
- 28:46Speaker 2: and then throwing a seam ball at 25 yards. If
- 28:48Speaker 2: a guy did any one of those things, that's like
- 28:50Speaker 2: highlight worthy. And he did like three of the hardest things. Like, yeah, he,
- 28:54Speaker 2: his high end stuff. But the thing is, he also
- 28:56Speaker 2: gets hit once in the next play. It looks like
- 28:58Speaker 2: he came hobbling across.
- 29:00Speaker 1: He's another one. Once again, he, his patience game was
- 29:03Speaker 1: different because he was good enough to be a starter
- 29:05Speaker 1: and he got that patience. He got the patience where
- 29:07Speaker 1: he's going to maybe go into the hall of fame
- 29:09Speaker 1: with all of three pro bowl appearances, like the comp
- 29:13Speaker 1: Carson Palmer. I don't think he's a Hall of Famer.
- 29:15Speaker 1: The Super Bowl is probably going to take it there.
- 29:17Speaker 1: But I don't know anybody that has consistently gotten better
- 29:21Speaker 1: for 15 years. Yep.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Yep. Yeah.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Because this is year 17 for him.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Yeah, because he.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Entered at 20. 09. In 09. This is year 17
- 29:33Speaker 1: for him. And as much as people put the he
- 29:35Speaker 1: played for Detroit thing, yeah, damn. Got stuck throwing to
- 29:39Speaker 1: Calvin Johnson. um like it wasn't it wasn't yeah yeah
- 29:43Speaker 1: it wasn't as bad as advertised but coming up next
- 29:45Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about uh some more of these games
- 29:47Speaker 1: including what in the world is going on with the

- 31:15Speaker 1: We are back with Nate Tice. You know, Russell Wilson
- 31:19Speaker 1: had a bad game against the commandos because Daybold could
- 31:23Speaker 1: not say definitively that he was going to start the
- 31:25Speaker 1: next game. And then he came back out and after
- 31:27Speaker 1: watching the film, decided that he is going to start
- 31:30Speaker 1: in week two, which I take to be a, we
- 31:33Speaker 1: watched the film and Russell Wilson was bad, but so
- 31:36Speaker 1: was everybody else. And we're not going to sacrifice anything
- 31:39Speaker 1: this quarterback that we say we're high on, um, in
- 31:42Speaker 1: order to just throw him on the field early. Cause look,
- 31:46Speaker 1: I don't think they have any good quarterbacks. I don't
- 31:48Speaker 1: think they have anything to gain for putting Jackson dart
- 31:50Speaker 1: out there, except to tell the veterans we're not giving
- 31:53Speaker 1: up on the season, right? Like that to me is
- 31:55Speaker 1: the only thing that you have to gain from doing that,
- 31:56Speaker 1: which I think is a value. It matters. I'm not
- 31:59Speaker 1: the one that has to manage these guys on a
- 32:01Speaker 1: day-to-day basis, but you played in college with Russell Wilson.
- 32:04Speaker 1: I covered Russell Wilson when he was at his first college, um,
- 32:08Speaker 1: Party's over, guys.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Yeah, especially with Noah O'Line. It's just... Him without an
- 32:14Speaker 2: offensive line is never going to be pretty.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Well, tell me this. Best case scenario on Russell Wilson
- 32:18Speaker 1: is kind of what you're hoping for Caleb Williams, right? Yeah.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Although Caleb Williams is bigger, they play in similar ways,
- 32:25Speaker 1: but also Russell Wilson was a different caliber of athlete.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Russell was just so much more creative. Russ scrambled to
- 32:33Speaker 2: launch a 40-yard deep ball. You know what I mean?
- 32:36Speaker 2: Caleb was... scrambling to like either you know run a
- 32:40Speaker 2: little bit but also just throw like more line drive
- 32:42Speaker 2: underneath stuff so how they even like what they get
- 32:44Speaker 2: to is different like that's the thing about Russ you
- 32:47Speaker 2: could take those sacks because the very next play he
- 32:50Speaker 2: might be launching a thing 40 yards down the field
- 32:53Speaker 2: and that you can win taking sacks like I'll say
- 32:55Speaker 2: this again but you have to generate explosives and that's
- 32:59Speaker 2: the Caleb conundrum he's a single Caleb right now is
- 33:02Speaker 2: playing like a singles and doubles hitter that takes a
- 33:04Speaker 2: bunch of strikeouts That's not– that math doesn't– I don't
- 33:07Speaker 2: want Ichiro taking 200 strikeouts.
- 33:09Speaker 3: Right.
- 33:09Speaker 2: You know, like that math doesn't work out for quarterbacks.
- 33:13Speaker 2: But like Russ, prime Russ at least, or Wisconsin Russ,
- 33:16Speaker 2: it was– we had a great run game that kept
- 33:17Speaker 2: us on schedule. But then it was like– I mean,
- 33:20Speaker 2: our 2011 Wisconsin offense was legitimately one of the best
- 33:23Speaker 2: offenses in like recent history.
- 33:25Speaker 1: Well, what you're talking about is should have won the
- 33:27Speaker 1: Heisman Russ except for people who don't remember that season.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Two insane Hail Marys are the only reason Russell Wilson
- 33:36Speaker 1: did not win that Heisman. And if those don't happen,
- 33:39Speaker 1: by the way, Russell wins that Heisman and not Robert Griffin,
- 33:45Speaker 1: which would make your current life a lot less annoying.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Hey, you got another Fox gig.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Let me tell you, Robert Griffin doesn't
- 33:55Speaker 1: win that Heisman. A whole lot of things about life
- 33:57Speaker 1: are much different.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Russ didn't even get into the Heisman ceremony. Monte Ball did.
- 34:03Speaker 1: That's right.
- 34:04Speaker 2: I forgot about that.
- 34:05Speaker 1: But no, they had, well, Kirk Cousins threw the crazy
- 34:08Speaker 1: one in Michigan State and Braxton Miller. through the everybody
- 34:12Speaker 1: cries because Ohio State finally did something good that year.
- 34:14Speaker 1: It was literally two from the 50-yard line Hail Marys
- 34:18Speaker 1: in a year where Russell Wilson had something like 37
- 34:19Speaker 1: touchdowns and four interceptions, and they went to the Rose
- 34:22Speaker 1: Bowl and all of that. He was that guy. I
- 34:25Speaker 1: remember I was doing Around the Horn the day that
- 34:27Speaker 1: it was announced that he was going to Wisconsin, and
- 34:29Speaker 1: it was funny because I went to the studio to
- 34:31Speaker 1: do Around the Horn and who was there but Russell Wilson.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember the interview.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Yeah, because he did one of the shows right beforehand.
- 34:38Speaker 1: And so I remember I'm on the call, and most
- 34:41Speaker 1: of those guys didn't follow college football on a granular level,
- 34:44Speaker 1: certainly not at a level at which they knew what
- 34:45Speaker 1: was going on at NC State. And I remember the
- 34:49Speaker 1: question was asked on the call. It was like, can
- 34:51Speaker 1: they win a national championship? I said, if what you're
- 34:54Speaker 1: telling me is Wisconsin needs a quarterback to win a
- 34:56Speaker 1: national championship, the answer is get ready. Like, yes, they
- 35:01Speaker 1: got the guy.
- 35:03Speaker 2: He came in. And how Bielma recruited him. It was
- 35:06Speaker 2: one of these things, too. As a quarterback there, he
- 35:08Speaker 2: took two throws, and I was like, yeah, I get it, guys.
- 35:12Speaker 2: But he came in, and Bielma was genius how he
- 35:15Speaker 2: recruited him. The only players he met was the starting
- 35:18Speaker 2: offensive line. And so he was like, and Russ is Russ.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Russ wants to be the president. And so in his head,
- 35:26Speaker 2: he's like, all right, what gets me to the NFL?
- 35:29Speaker 2: What are my biggest questions? He was very aware about this. Well,
- 35:32Speaker 2: people say I can't throw over an NFL offensive line
- 35:34Speaker 2: because I'm so short. All right, let's go. Let's go
- 35:37Speaker 2: behind these these big dudes and I'll prove I'll prove
- 35:40Speaker 2: them all wrong. But that's what Bealmo's genius. He was like, hey,
- 35:43Speaker 2: you're going to go here. Look at these guys. These
- 35:44Speaker 2: guys are all going to the NFL.
- 35:45Speaker 1: You can prove it here.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Like, watch out. And oh, my God, that that offense
- 35:51Speaker 2: was so sick because even in the back, we were
- 35:53Speaker 2: able to redshirt Melvin Gordon because we didn't even need him.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Wisconsin was able to redshirt Melvin Gordon. That's how talented
- 35:59Speaker 2: we were that year. But yeah, James White, Monty Ball.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Monty tied the touchdown record. And James White came in.
- 36:07Speaker 2: He was great.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Should have been Super Bowl MVP.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Should have been Super Bowl MVP. At least he got
- 36:12Speaker 2: the truck, I think, right? Didn't Tom Brady give him
- 36:14Speaker 2: the truck? I should have James. He's doing some media stuff, too.
- 36:16Speaker 2: We have the same agent. I should have James. He's
- 36:18Speaker 2: a great dude. But no, we actually had two NFL
- 36:21Speaker 2: receivers that year. Nick Toon. Al Toon's son and Jared Aberderis.
- 36:27Speaker 2: But it was just one of the– like that Michigan State–
- 36:29Speaker 2: I can't believe you remember that. The Kirk Cousins Hail Mary. Bullshit,
- 36:32Speaker 2: by the way. So he scores. They say– they ruled
- 36:36Speaker 2: it incomplete. Or they ruled it that he didn't score
- 36:38Speaker 2: at first. And then they reviewed it. And the angle
- 36:41Speaker 2: that they used was like on the line of scrimmage.
- 36:44Speaker 2: You know, like camera on the line of scrimmage to
- 36:46Speaker 2: see if he passed– broke the plane. It was off-angled.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Like it was at the one-yard line and tilted. It
- 36:54Speaker 2: wasn't down the line. And to this day, I'm like, no,
- 36:58Speaker 2: that's inconclusive.
- 36:59Speaker 1: Nope.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Has to be 100% without a doubt. I remember it.
- 37:03Speaker 2: And then the Braxton Miller. Oh, my God. I can't
- 37:05Speaker 2: believe you're bringing it. Now these are.
- 37:06Speaker 1: Just wounds, man.
- 37:07Speaker 2: These are just.
- 37:08Speaker 1: What are my favorite?
- 37:09Speaker 2: We won at Bama that year. We were like, hey,
- 37:12Speaker 2: we got this this year. If JJ Watt came back
- 37:14Speaker 2: that year, we were definitely rolling.
- 37:15Speaker 1: But yeah.
- 37:16Speaker 2: And then we had one of the greatest games ever,
- 37:17Speaker 2: that Big Ten championship game against Michigan State.
- 37:20Speaker 1: One of my favorite sub-jobbers of content is people mad
- 37:24Speaker 1: at things that happened 15 years ago like they just
- 37:27Speaker 1: happened this morning.
- 37:28Speaker 2: You detailed it. You mentioned the names, and that's actually
- 37:31Speaker 2: what I heard. And as the backup quarterback, I'm right
- 37:34Speaker 2: there at the line of scrimmage, so I'm watching that
- 37:36Speaker 2: throw go off and going, they're not going to catch that, right?
- 37:40Speaker 2: They're not going to catch that, right? They're not going
- 37:42Speaker 2: to catch that, right? We just lost. Michigan State Stadium sucks.
- 37:47Speaker 2: It's got the bathroom. They have like three showers for
- 37:50Speaker 2: 100 people. It's tight. They have two yards of sideline
- 37:55Speaker 2: from you to the fans. Oh, my God.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 37:58Speaker 2: You're just really.
- 38:00Speaker 1: So I'll make the nice transition for you.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Are you buying into Jackson Dart because I have a
- 38:06Speaker 1: pretty safe rule? Drafted in the 20s? Nope. Not for
- 38:10Speaker 1: a quarterback. No way.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Don't, I'm not very high on him. I think he's,
- 38:15Speaker 2: I think he's okay. I kind of has some Heineke
- 38:18Speaker 2: to him. I got kind of a Heineke plus kind
- 38:21Speaker 2: of a runaround guy. I thought he would talk about
- 38:24Speaker 2: taking a second to, to process, you know, like he
- 38:27Speaker 2: takes a second to throw. He's got, he's got tools.
- 38:29Speaker 2: That was one thing. He's a good runner. Well, he's
- 38:32Speaker 2: pretty athletic. He's got pretty good arm. His deep ball
- 38:34Speaker 2: dies on him a little bit, but it was one
- 38:36Speaker 2: of those where everyone's comparing him to Josh Allen and stuff.
- 38:39Speaker 2: I'm like, if he was like Josh Allen, he's going
- 38:40Speaker 2: top 10. Like, you know, Josh Allen's Josh Allen. Like,
- 38:44Speaker 2: the tools were a step down. And Josh Allen was
- 38:47Speaker 2: able to win early on because his tools were top
- 38:49Speaker 2: of the line. We just laughed about it, 99 overall
- 38:51Speaker 2: and everything, even before he figured everything out. No, Dart
- 38:55Speaker 2: to me, he's tough. He's going to make some cool plays.
- 38:58Speaker 2: But the thing is, everything's just always a count slow.
- 39:02Speaker 2: And on plays that he's familiar with, with a guy
- 39:05Speaker 2: that has a lot of reps. So that was my worst.
- 39:07Speaker 2: I had a third-round grade on him. Like, you know, okay,
- 39:10Speaker 2: take a shot. Make him sit. I'm scared of him
- 39:12Speaker 2: playing behind that offensive line, too, because he takes a
- 39:14Speaker 2: lot of sacks.
- 39:16Speaker 1: Hey, man. These guys need to get something before Malik
- 39:19Speaker 1: Neighbors completely loses it. I've never seen a player this
- 39:26Speaker 1: young feel this way before. Yeah. Yeah.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Yeah. It's been a while. It's been a while. Maybe Keyshawn.
- 39:33Speaker 1: Keyshawn just put that book out and said that, but
- 39:37Speaker 1: we did not have the examples of Keyshawn.
- 39:40Speaker 2: Just, oh my God, what is going on? And he's
- 39:45Speaker 2: like dancing with Jaden Daniels before the game. They're like
- 39:47Speaker 2: having fun, like high-fiving. And then the game starts, he
- 39:51Speaker 2: looks at his quarterback and he's just like this. I
- 39:55Speaker 2: didn't see that either.
- 39:57Speaker 1: Look, so he had to deal with like Daniel Jones
- 39:59Speaker 1: and everybody else. And what's that boy? Tommy DeVito. He
- 40:02Speaker 1: was on the team, right? He got all of that.
- 40:05Speaker 1: At some point, New York City, look, New York City,
- 40:09Speaker 1: it seems to be enjoying the idea of Jameis Winston
- 40:12Speaker 1: right now. At some point, he's going to get on
- 40:15Speaker 1: the field. And I just can't wait to see Brian
- 40:17Speaker 1: Dable's head explode when that happens.
- 40:21Speaker 2: With that offensive line. Did you see Dable's, their first
- 40:26Speaker 2: red zone play or first play at the goal line?
- 40:27Speaker 2: What they did?
- 40:28Speaker 1: No, I did not.
- 40:30Speaker 2: They ran like a play action. They had an offensive
- 40:31Speaker 2: lineman running like a legit route into the back of
- 40:34Speaker 2: the end zone. But it was so funny because usually
- 40:37Speaker 2: teams do that. Like they set it up for weeks. hey,
- 40:40Speaker 2: this is our big– hey, we got extra offensive linemen.
- 40:42Speaker 2: We have extra offensive linemen. We're going to run the ball,
- 40:44Speaker 2: run the ball. And they did it on the first
- 40:46Speaker 2: goal line play of the year. So you could tell
- 40:48Speaker 2: like Dayball was really trying to like you know, a
- 40:51Speaker 2: little pizzazz to start the season and Washington covers it
- 40:54Speaker 2: up like a glove. Like, I mean, they just, I mean,
- 40:56Speaker 2: just are all over it. So it just looks like
- 40:58Speaker 2: the stupidest play. There's an offensive lineman running a 10
- 41:00Speaker 2: yard route, trying to juke a DB and he doesn't
- 41:02Speaker 2: get it, but that's what that's.
- 41:06Speaker 1: I did see that play at the goal line. I
- 41:07Speaker 1: was at Nick's house and I was like, Hey man,
- 41:09Speaker 1: that looked like he was supposed to run a route.
- 41:11Speaker 1: He did. It was in the bag. Okay. I thought
- 41:13Speaker 1: I saw him go.
- 41:14Speaker 2: Whew.
- 41:17Speaker 1: With your shoulder and then take it back outside. I'm like, no,
- 41:20Speaker 1: he's just supposed to be there and be fat.
- 41:22Speaker 2: No, he was trying to run a fricking route. First,
- 41:27Speaker 2: first goal I'd play in the year.
- 41:28Speaker 1: It killed me.
- 41:29Speaker 2: Cause that's the thing. My thing with Dable is that
- 41:32Speaker 2: he has media friends and he reads everything. And it
- 41:36Speaker 2: just seems like he does a lot of things performatively.
- 41:39Speaker 2: That's how my read on him. Everything's kind of performative
- 41:41Speaker 2: with him. Like he, Oh, you know, I love my quarterback. Like,
- 41:44Speaker 2: and he's like getting all giddy about him and saying
- 41:46Speaker 2: all these things in the preseason. It's like really about
- 41:48Speaker 2: what he did right there.
- 41:49Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Cause he knows he needs that dark to be decent,
- 41:52Speaker 2: to save his job. Like, you know, so of course
- 41:55Speaker 2: he's going to be selling these things. Like he he's
- 41:57Speaker 2: selling a lot. He's like, Oh, I got my Josh Allen.
- 42:00Speaker 2: It's like, well, again, I'm never going to compare anybody
- 42:02Speaker 2: to Josh Allen ever. And, and also the progression of
- 42:05Speaker 2: Josh Allen. And also, again, you can't compare these two
- 42:08Speaker 2: guys because their tools are so different. They want, Again,
- 42:12Speaker 2: one maxes out the scales and one's more like, good.
- 42:15Speaker 2: But there's a big difference between maxing out the scale,
- 42:17Speaker 2: A +, and a B. That's a pretty big difference.
- 42:21Speaker 2: So that's what– it's kind of been funny with the Giants.
- 42:25Speaker 2: It's like they're telling themselves a lot of things, and
- 42:27Speaker 2: they have one of the hardest schedules, and I think
- 42:30Speaker 2: they're going to struggle to win a lot of games.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Hey, speaking of coaches, I don't know football on this
- 42:37Speaker 1: level in the way that I know basketball, right? But
- 42:41Speaker 1: with basketball, especially at the professional level, it takes very
- 42:46Speaker 1: little for a coach to lose a team. And the
- 42:51Speaker 1: example I talk about on this show a lot, I
- 42:52Speaker 1: found out about a team where in practice, there was
- 42:55Speaker 1: a coach who had moved up to the pros from college,
- 42:58Speaker 1: and he called five seconds on the dribbler, which is
- 43:01Speaker 1: a college call and not a professional call. And he
- 43:03Speaker 1: did that in training camp, in a practice, and it
- 43:05Speaker 1: was over. He lost them right then and there, right? Right.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Brian Callahan stood in front of God and everybody else
- 43:15Speaker 1: and said that he did not challenge a catch in
- 43:17Speaker 1: a game that was very clearly a catch by his
- 43:19Speaker 1: guys in a game they had a chance to win.
- 43:22Speaker 1: And he did not challenge it because he knew that
- 43:27Speaker 1: an arm or a hand being down was not the
- 43:30Speaker 1: same as two feet being down. Now, I want to
- 43:33Speaker 1: say two things. Number one, it says it specifically in
- 43:37Speaker 1: the rule book that any body part is the equivalent
- 43:41Speaker 1: of two feet. But number two, even if you didn't
- 43:44Speaker 1: know the rules, if you are of Brian Callahan's age
- 43:48Speaker 1: or in that ballpark, and let me look it up
- 43:49Speaker 1: because I feel like he is not too young to
- 43:53Speaker 1: understand what I'm about to say. A lot of us
- 43:56Speaker 1: grew up with some pretty solid John Maddenisms. And the
- 44:00Speaker 1: biggest one is one hand is the same as two feet.
- 44:05Speaker 1: And he did not know this. In a basketball context,
- 44:09Speaker 1: you should start looking for your new coach tomorrow because
- 44:12Speaker 1: these guys are checked out on this because I'm checked
- 44:15Speaker 1: out on him after this.
- 44:16Speaker 2: Even Cam Ward seemed like he was like, oh my God,
- 44:19Speaker 2: what am I dealing with here? It was very disappointing
- 44:23Speaker 2: as hopefully one of the good Nepos. It was pretty disappointing,
- 44:28Speaker 2: but that's the point of the upside of a Nepo
- 44:32Speaker 2: in theory. is well they have more exposure they have
- 44:35Speaker 2: more reps at this stuff they have more you know
- 44:38Speaker 2: they they pick this stuff up at seven i was
- 44:40Speaker 2: spotting footballs and reading scripts from nine years old on
- 44:42Speaker 2: it's like and it did help me hearing conversations you
- 44:45Speaker 2: just mentioned the madden thing when you just watch these
- 44:47Speaker 2: games you just learn it through osmosis i mean any
- 44:49Speaker 2: of us that do anything that we like or hobbies
- 44:51Speaker 2: or anything that's what's disappointing it's like he should know
- 44:54Speaker 2: stuff like the back of his hand like he should
- 44:56Speaker 2: know these rules like like that like everybody kind of
- 44:59Speaker 2: that one's pretty That's like a 201 level football knowledge thing.
- 45:03Speaker 2: You know what I mean? It's not like some advanced
- 45:04Speaker 2: thing like a rip move negates holding penalties. You know,
- 45:08Speaker 2: like that's pretty advanced. I understand people not understanding that.
- 45:11Speaker 2: Coach's kid, but also, and this is more indicative of anything,
- 45:17Speaker 2: and maybe just of the coaching or just their system
- 45:20Speaker 2: there in Tennessee too, is a lot of these coaches
- 45:22Speaker 2: that even if they might not know the rule, they
- 45:24Speaker 2: have a guide. that knows the rules. And then they
- 45:27Speaker 2: have a line of communication that can get to them
- 45:30Speaker 2: and go like, Hey, we got to challenge us. Hey,
- 45:31Speaker 2: we got to do this because of this, this and that.
- 45:33Speaker 2: So that's, what's indicative of like, that's more negative to
- 45:36Speaker 2: me than anything that not one person either had the
- 45:39Speaker 2: trust or one person was enabled. One person thought they
- 45:42Speaker 2: had the confidence to go like, Hey, we should challenge
- 45:44Speaker 2: this or we should do this. That that's, that's really
- 45:48Speaker 2: scary to me, but I love your five seconds call
- 45:51Speaker 2: because I know, especially with NBA guys, they're, They're looking
- 45:55Speaker 2: for that stuff.
- 45:56Speaker 1: That's it.
- 45:56Speaker 2: And I heard about, who's the guy that came over from,
- 46:00Speaker 2: that was LeBron's coach in Cleveland, not Ty Lue or anything.
- 46:03Speaker 1: Oh, you're talking about David Blatt.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 46:05Speaker 1: David Blatt.
- 46:06Speaker 2: I heard some stories about that kind of happening too.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Same exact kind of thing where he, supposed to be
- 46:12Speaker 2: a very smart basketball mind, but had some moments where
- 46:15Speaker 2: he didn't realize it was the NBA rules. They kind
- 46:18Speaker 2: of lost some people some things. But no, I'm glad
- 46:20Speaker 2: you brought up the Tennessee thing because I've just been like,
- 46:23Speaker 2: There's no arguing for it. There's no justification of it all.
- 46:28Speaker 2: And also it makes it worse because he should, of
- 46:32Speaker 2: all people, be a rules genius, savant, because of just
- 46:37Speaker 2: being around the game with his dad on the staff
- 46:39Speaker 2: at offensive line coach and Bill Calhoun. So yeah, very
- 46:42Speaker 2: disappointing and brewing the Nepo. the netbook name for all of.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Us i will say this also i watched a decent
- 46:49Speaker 1: bit of that game you know watching with all the
- 46:51Speaker 1: screens and i felt like i got a decent look
- 46:53Speaker 1: at a lot of the action there um i thought
- 46:56Speaker 1: their quarterback looked good i don't care what the numbers
- 46:59Speaker 1: said i thought cam ward looked really good he looked
- 47:02Speaker 1: like he was out there for dolo but i thought
- 47:04Speaker 1: he looked good i'm a big fan.
- 47:06Speaker 2: He's he's one i liked and then i did my
- 47:09Speaker 2: i usually do a big evaluation scouting study on all
- 47:14Speaker 2: the top quarterbacks and he used one after I did
- 47:16Speaker 2: that and watched seven games and looked at numbers and
- 47:19Speaker 2: everything I'm like this guy's just good like I don't
- 47:21Speaker 2: know why we're saying oh yeah it's just a bad
- 47:23Speaker 2: class that's why he's going number one it's like no
- 47:24Speaker 2: this guy's like he's got some stuff to him I
- 47:27Speaker 2: I compare I've been comparing him to Rodney Mullen I
- 47:29Speaker 2: don't know what your skateboarding knowledge is uh but Rodney
- 47:32Speaker 2: Mullen invented the kickflip amongst other tricks. And what was
- 47:36Speaker 2: cool about Rodney Mullen was he would do these advanced
- 47:39Speaker 2: looking crazy things, but his fundamentals were so good that
- 47:43Speaker 2: that let him do those crazy things to invent things.
- 47:46Speaker 2: And Cam Ward, because he does all the trick shots,
- 47:48Speaker 2: and I think some people are maybe misconstruing how he
- 47:51Speaker 2: actually plays. Dude is so smart. He's got great timing.
- 47:55Speaker 2: He's got great creativity, but it keeps him on time.
- 47:59Speaker 2: So he can throw sidearm. He can like kind of
- 48:01Speaker 2: just do these extra things but it's to be consistent
- 48:05Speaker 2: which i think is really kind of special uh but
- 48:08Speaker 2: no he looked good he had a couple throws good
- 48:09Speaker 2: process he took a couple sacks but it's whatever um
- 48:12Speaker 2: it's denver defense which might be number one defense this
- 48:14Speaker 2: year too uh he took he had a couple moments
- 48:17Speaker 2: that were like that's some really good process even if
- 48:19Speaker 2: the results weren't weren't there so i'm with you i
- 48:21Speaker 2: think even the numbers weren't great i thought he looked
- 48:23Speaker 2: really good.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Now as we start winding this down um one i'm
- 48:27Speaker 1: trying to imagine your big ass on a skateboard and
- 48:29Speaker 1: two um Ryan said in text, I think it's pretty
- 48:34Speaker 1: funny about this, which is, you know, Brian Daybold's out
- 48:37Speaker 1: here looking like he'll be Alabama's offensive coordinator next year
- 48:39Speaker 1: under Lane Kiffin. Number one, I cannot imagine a more
- 48:42Speaker 1: combustible mix than Brian Daybold and Lane Kiffin. But also,
- 48:45Speaker 1: don't forget, Daybold won a national championship as the offensive
- 48:49Speaker 1: coordinator in Alabama, and everybody was ready for him to go.
- 48:54Speaker 1: it was and meanwhile he's like if you would have
- 48:56Speaker 1: just started to in the first place like i wanted
- 48:59Speaker 1: to we'd have been just fine that was a wild
- 49:02Speaker 1: season when you really stop and look back on it
- 49:04Speaker 1: what happened there but no they won't they won't be
- 49:08Speaker 1: talking crazy to people like you see it during games
- 49:10Speaker 1: i'm like you're not tall enough to talk to me
- 49:12Speaker 1: like that well no he's.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Got his big truck that's right that's a big truck
- 49:16Speaker 2: that needs five steps to get out of. He, uh, no, he,
- 49:20Speaker 2: he's got, he was a Belichick saving guy. So it's
- 49:23Speaker 2: just like, he thinks that has to be a certain way,
- 49:25Speaker 2: but that's guys try to do this for years. Uh,
- 49:28Speaker 2: be a little mini Parcells is, And it was just
- 49:30Speaker 2: like setback football like a decade. Just people. Everyone tried
- 49:35Speaker 2: to be a Bill Parcells or a Bill Belichick and
- 49:37Speaker 2: then set football back forever. None of the Belichick guys.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Have made it work.
- 49:41Speaker 2: Ever. Ever.
- 49:42Speaker 1: None of them.
- 49:43Speaker 4: Ever.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Like ever.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Ever.
- 49:46Speaker 2: You can't find anyone.
- 49:47Speaker 1: The only one that has is Nick Saban. Yes.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Right and that's exactly true i know and and dimitrov
- 49:55Speaker 2: as a gm for the falcons had like a good
- 49:57Speaker 2: run and that was it but even his little gms
- 50:00Speaker 2: that went everywhere fail like it was just it was
- 50:03Speaker 2: everybody it's everybody because it was so there's a story
- 50:06Speaker 2: i'll wrap up with this we're tied us all together
- 50:09Speaker 2: was somebody asked um uh dimitrov and like we had
- 50:14Speaker 2: kind of like a q a when i was with
- 50:15Speaker 2: the falcons and i were kind of like so what
- 50:17Speaker 2: One of the scouts goes like, what is the Patriots
- 50:20Speaker 2: system to you? Like, what is the Patriot way? He
- 50:23Speaker 2: kind of just goes, Tom Brady. And now that was 2015, 2014.
- 50:32Speaker 2: And now 10 years later, I'm like, yeah, that sure
- 50:36Speaker 2: seemed right. Seemed right to me. That's pretty apparent what happened.
- 50:40Speaker 2: It just seemed like a really, really good quarterback with
- 50:43Speaker 2: a guy that just knew all the rules and was
- 50:46Speaker 2: willing to trade back in the draft. That was the
- 50:48Speaker 2: Patriot way, it seemed like, for a while.
- 50:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Actually, I'll ask this one last thing before we go.
- 50:53Speaker 1: What did you think about Aaron Rodgers in week one? Fine.
- 50:58Speaker 2: He had none of his combustible moments like last year.
- 51:01Speaker 2: He's not moving great. I don't think anyone should be
- 51:03Speaker 2: surprised with that. But, man, I mean, can you play
- 51:06Speaker 2: the Jets defense every week? That'll help out. The two
- 51:10Speaker 2: of the touchdowns were easy, you know. I say that
- 51:13Speaker 2: sitting in my chair in Las Vegas. But same play.
- 51:17Speaker 2: It was like a little bootleg play. So it wasn't
- 51:18Speaker 2: anything crazy. The third touchdown was a jet sweep to
- 51:21Speaker 2: Jonu Smith. I thought the Steelers offense had some nice moments.
- 51:25Speaker 2: He's just got to play like that. Like the thing
- 51:27Speaker 2: was last year is he like became, you know, arm
- 51:30Speaker 2: is still there to make some of the throws. But
- 51:33Speaker 2: some of the stuff was like, dude, you've had like
- 51:35Speaker 2: 200 starts. How do you not know protections? Like he
- 51:38Speaker 2: was awful against the Blitz and he wasn't helping it
- 51:40Speaker 2: out at all. And that was really confusing to me.
- 51:43Speaker 2: So I think there is some appeal with, like, Zach Frazier,
- 51:46Speaker 2: the center, and Arthur Smith, the OC, having some personality
- 51:48Speaker 2: to go, like, hey, we got this, and you can
- 51:51Speaker 2: do your glory hunting things. So if I had to
- 51:55Speaker 2: give it a grade, it was, like, a B minus B. Like,
- 51:58Speaker 2: I thought it was a pretty good Aaron Rodgers appearance
- 52:02Speaker 2: in 2025. I think that's the nicest way I can
- 52:04Speaker 2: put it. Had some nice moments and had none of
- 52:06Speaker 2: those moments, like, that he's had the last couple years,
- 52:08Speaker 2: where he's just, like, dirting things left and right.
- 52:11Speaker 1: I'll say the last thing on this, and this has
- 52:12Speaker 1: been in the weeds on football, but I don't know
- 52:15Speaker 1: if any two people are happier to see each other
- 52:17Speaker 1: than John New Smith and Arthur Smith. When each of
- 52:19Speaker 1: them found out that the other was available, it's like,
- 52:24Speaker 1: it's funny, isn't it? I miss you too.
- 52:27Speaker 2: It was like in the summer. It was like, oh,
- 52:30Speaker 2: Johnny Smith is the Steelers are trying to trade for
- 52:32Speaker 2: Johnny Smith. And everyone's like, what? Okay, where did that
- 52:36Speaker 2: come from?
- 52:36Speaker 3: All right, cool.
- 52:37Speaker 2: Oh, Arthur's there. That's why. It was like, didn't he
- 52:39Speaker 2: just have a good year with the Dolphins? Like, what
- 52:41Speaker 2: just happened here?
- 52:42Speaker 1: Hey, man, look, it sounds like there was some foresight
- 52:46Speaker 1: getting out of that dumpster fire.
- 52:47Speaker 2: Oh, my God. I tweeted this. It was like, my
- 52:51Speaker 2: expectations were low, but holy shit.
- 52:53Speaker 1: And then you get the report today, and today being Tuesday,
- 52:59Speaker 1: in the divorce proceedings, Tyree Hill's soon-to-be estranged wife with
- 53:04Speaker 1: eight alleged incidents of domestic violence. They may wind up
- 53:08Speaker 1: having to cut him this year. And all the talk
- 53:11Speaker 1: about trade, you're going to have to answer for it
- 53:13Speaker 1: if you trade for him. And I think he's going
- 53:16Speaker 1: to just become generally disruptive. They may wind up just
- 53:19Speaker 1: having to leave him on the curb.
- 53:22Speaker 2: I mean, all the signs are there. He, I mean,
- 53:25Speaker 2: just even going from the, like they don't name him captain.
- 53:28Speaker 2: And I know that seems stupid, but I don't know
- 53:31Speaker 2: how many times a vet with the same staff on
- 53:34Speaker 2: the same team has lost the captainship. Like, I know
- 53:38Speaker 2: that seems stupid and I know that seems silly, but
- 53:40Speaker 2: it is very like, That's telling.
- 53:42Speaker 1: That was a choice by the players.
- 53:45Speaker 2: That was everybody going like, no way. Like, no, enough.
- 53:48Speaker 2: You're not good enough for us to be doing this. Like,
- 53:50Speaker 2: to us to wave away. Like, I've seen assholes be
- 53:53Speaker 2: captains all the time. But it's just like, usually it's
- 53:55Speaker 2: because they're good players. And that's the thing with Tyreek is,
- 54:00Speaker 2: I talked to somebody in the NBA, actually. And we're
- 54:02Speaker 2: talking about Vince Carter. And we're talking about how excellent
- 54:05Speaker 2: athletes actually age better. Like, we sometimes... misconstrued the guy
- 54:09Speaker 2: that has the old game, old man game at the
- 54:11Speaker 2: Y ages better because they're advanced. Well, it's like, well,
- 54:13Speaker 2: if they're a bad athlete, they're probably become a worse athlete.
- 54:16Speaker 2: It's not going to end well, but like the really
- 54:18Speaker 2: good athletes can age well if they work hard and
- 54:20Speaker 2: they kind of like learn their game and that, you know,
- 54:22Speaker 2: adapt their game. Tyreek doesn't have that personality to like
- 54:25Speaker 2: adapt his game. His game is just purely speed. And
- 54:28Speaker 2: if you look at all of his metrics now, and
- 54:30Speaker 2: with this, Everything about him is his speed is just
- 54:33Speaker 2: dropping off a cliff. It's not even just slowly going down.
- 54:38Speaker 2: It's like, no, no, it's rapidly descending here. His average
- 54:43Speaker 2: speed last year was 12.77 miles an hour. Year before that, 13.7.
- 54:48Speaker 2: Year before that, 13.8. So it's dropped a full mile
- 54:51Speaker 2: an hour. And that's significant when we're talking about averages.
- 54:54Speaker 2: Top speed went from 22 miles an hour to just
- 54:56Speaker 2: over 21. So, again, dropped a mile an hour. And then, like,
- 55:00Speaker 2: his average, or his, like, times he's hit 15 miles
- 55:02Speaker 2: an hour dropped from 44% to 36%.
- 55:05Speaker 1: Okay, that one tells it for me. Because it's hard
- 55:09Speaker 1: to get the gradations on something as close as, like,
- 55:11Speaker 1: single numbers. But 44 to 36 is a percent?
- 55:15Speaker 2: Yes. 4.3 of his plays in 2023, he went 20
- 55:19Speaker 2: miles an hour and over. 20 miles an hour is
- 55:20Speaker 2: the elite speed.
- 55:21Speaker 1: So, 4.3 in 2023.
- 55:22Speaker 3: 1.3 in 2024.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 55:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 55:30Speaker 1: He's also a sneaky old guy.
- 55:32Speaker 2: Yes. He is a sneaky old guy.
- 55:33Speaker 1: He's been in the league for a while. The thing
- 55:36Speaker 1: with him is it's hard to find guys that fast
- 55:41Speaker 1: who accelerate like that and who change directions.
- 55:44Speaker 2: And ball skills. Tyreek, that's an underrated thing with him
- 55:47Speaker 2: is he can adjust and everything. He's not just a
- 55:49Speaker 2: totally tiny guy, but it's all of his route running
- 55:52Speaker 2: because he's a unique route runner in that he'll sell
- 55:55Speaker 2: routes and go fricking midfield and then break back out
- 55:59Speaker 2: where most guys would just go to the hash. Well,
- 56:02Speaker 2: if you just, if you won your entire, we talk
- 56:04Speaker 2: about how guys win, if you win your entire career
- 56:07Speaker 2: that way, and we're just going to take that away
- 56:08Speaker 2: from you and you're the personality, that's this, that's like
- 56:12Speaker 2: full blown. I feel like I'm okay saying it a dick. Like,
- 56:16Speaker 2: I don't know. It's a, I don't know if that's
- 56:18Speaker 2: going to age well. So I, and again, taking the
- 56:20Speaker 2: captain ship, it's just like all the signs are there.
- 56:22Speaker 2: It's like, just, just going to fall off soon. Yeah, everybody's.
- 56:26Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel will be doing a great job running somebody's
- 56:29Speaker 1: offense for a very handsome check. Right? Like, don't you
- 56:32Speaker 1: worry about him. He'll be just fine. He's trying to
- 56:34Speaker 1: get Chip Kelly money.
- 56:36Speaker 3: Yep.
- 56:36Speaker 1: And Tua will be playing for his job under one
- 56:40Speaker 1: more coach.
- 56:41Speaker 2: Yep.
- 56:42Speaker 1: You know? And they're going to have to start that
- 56:44Speaker 1: whole thing over.
- 56:48Speaker 2: Man, it just ended up such a fizzle. Like, you know, like.
- 56:52Speaker 2: Usually you have that bad loss that's kind of like,
- 56:54Speaker 2: all right, that was the last rod. It was just
- 56:56Speaker 2: like that Chiefs wildcard game where they didn't even try,
- 56:59Speaker 2: where everybody was just cold. That's how you're going to
- 57:03Speaker 2: end it, but it actually kind of feels kind of fitting.
- 57:06Speaker 2: They just kind of literally got slowed down in the cold.
- 57:10Speaker 1: Had a spark when you started, but now you're just garbage.
- 57:14Speaker 1: Now you, Nate Tice, you're pretty dope. Check him out
- 57:17Speaker 1: at Yahoo Sports covering the NFL. My man, I appreciate you.
- 57:21Speaker 2: Thanks for having me. Always fun.
- 57:22Speaker 1: All right. Thank you, man. And ladies and gentlemen, thanks
