- 0:29and ageless. In this conversation, we explore
- 0:32how to show up as your truest self, stay physically
- 0:34and mentally active in every season of life and
- 0:37rethink what it means to be ageless. If you ever
- 0:40felt the pressure to slow down, dim your light
- 0:42or play small, you're going to want to hear this.
- 0:54Welcome to Loud and Lifted. Patti and Cathy,
- 0:57thank you so much for being here. Thank you.
- 0:59Happy to be here. Love it. Thanks, Patti. Awesome.
- 1:03I feel left out that I'm not in the same room
- 1:05with you guys. So I apologize. I got to work
- 1:07on my setup that I could have three people in
- 1:09the same room. So we'll do that maybe when you
- 1:11guys come back. But happy to be here today with
- 1:14you guys and wanted to start off by first, if
- 1:16you guys could sort of introduce yourself and
- 1:18talk about your background and why you two are
- 1:21here together. Well, that's a, that's a lot,
- 1:25but keep it brief, keep it brief. That's right.
- 1:30I'm Cathy Anderson Martin and I worked, graduated
- 1:32from Penn State and worked many years in corporate,
- 1:35the corporate world, sales, sales manager, national
- 1:37account manager. And I know Patty's going to
- 1:40say, oh no, she's going to tell a heart story,
- 1:41but I am. But within 10 days of 2000, my husband
- 1:44and I were waiting to adopt. I found out I had
- 1:47a heart condition I never knew I had. We got
- 1:49the call to adopt our daughter and then she had
- 1:51the same heart condition. That all happened within
- 1:5310 days. And I share that because that blew up
- 1:55all my plans. got me into a second career in
- 1:58the nonprofit world. And that's what I've been
- 2:00doing since we adopted our second daughter thereafter.
- 2:03And a lot of similarities between the corporate
- 2:06world, nonprofit, a lot of pivots and changes,
- 2:08and even still today doing a lot of those changes.
- 2:11So that's a little bit my background and where
- 2:14I am professionally and personally being a wife
- 2:17and mom and all those things certainly changes
- 2:18a lot of things as well. So I told the heart
- 2:21story, Patty, which she's always like, is you
- 2:23telling that again? I do. last night, I said
- 2:27you have a heart of gold. Yeah, so that's very
- 2:31nice. A Teflon patch on it. True story. Okay,
- 2:34I like that. Hey, that's recorded. So now everybody
- 2:36knows that you definitely said that. So yeah,
- 2:39awesome. Hi, Betsy. Patty Sibach here. As you
- 2:43know, fellowship, Pittsburgh University grad,
- 2:46I attended university athletic scholarship. which
- 2:50really helped me get my college education. Spent
- 2:53most of my professional career in health and
- 2:56wellness, pharmaceutical sales, more so diving
- 2:59into women's health. In 2020, I pivoted full
- 3:04-time into our personal training studios, which
- 3:07are called Precision Training Concepts, where
- 3:09we do one -on -one personal training, as well
- 3:12as corporate wellness and fitness. Opened up
- 3:14a membership -based facility when we moved up
- 3:16to Perry County, a very underserved area. And
- 3:19we just feel, my husband and I feel as though
- 3:22we have a gift of fitness. You know, it came
- 3:24easily to us, doesn't come easily to everybody.
- 3:27And we want to give back as much as we can. of
- 3:31us got together was Cathy, do you want to share
- 3:34that story? Well, of course she will. Yes, I
- 3:37will absolutely share that story. I know we can
- 3:40give her a shout out with this, but we've been
- 3:42friends for a while, but when I was working at
- 3:44the Salvation Army Harrisburg we met and so it
- 3:47was more than a decade ago or so 15 years ago
- 3:50or so and became friends. We're very different,
- 3:53have a lot of differences, a lot of commonalities
- 3:55as well, but a few years ago, five or six years
- 3:58ago, Patty, there was a lot more. of me than
- 4:01there is right now. And Patty said to me, you
- 4:03have to Cathy invest in your health. And while
- 4:06I was always that person who went on the New
- 4:09Year's diet, lost weight, and then regained that
- 4:11plus 10 more pounds by Christmas. And you're
- 4:13like, how did I gain 70 pounds? I realized I
- 4:16needed to make what Patty said that you have
- 4:17to invest, but it is an investment in your health.
- 4:19And then that affects every other part of your
- 4:21life. So that really I've transformed my health
- 4:24and I give her credit. And now, like you say,
- 4:26it's on tape for helping me. Now the only thing
- 4:31big on her is her personality. I don't know.
- 4:36We're not used to complimenting each other like
- 4:39this. I know. And again, this is recorded, so
- 4:41I know that you said these nice things. It goes
- 4:43on forever. Right. And the way that we're together,
- 4:46Betsy, is Cathy already said it. We're very different.
- 4:49We're very different people. Our interests are
- 4:52different, but there are some definite common
- 4:55threads that we found, that we live our lives
- 4:58on. And from that, we've really created a platform
- 5:01that we feel as though we've been able to educate
- 5:04other women, other men as well, but on that.
- 5:08And so many women, and I think we fell into this
- 5:11maybe at some point, feel like they need to be
- 5:13all things to all people as opposed to being
- 5:16who they are and authentic with who they are.
- 5:20Right, right. We just spoke earlier before we
- 5:23went on broadcast here that sometimes you set
- 5:26yourself up for unrealistic expectations and
- 5:29you feel as though you're going to be a failure
- 5:32in everything because you can't give that 100
- 5:34% to all those avenues in your life. And because
- 5:38of that, you know, what we reiterate is that
- 5:41authenticity, you need to be authentic with yourself.
- 5:44And so let's dig into that a little bit. So when
- 5:46you say the word authentic, we throw that around
- 5:48a lot, right? Like, what does that actually mean?
- 5:50And how does somebody show up being their authentic
- 5:52selves? Well, it means that if you look up the
- 5:55definition, it means being true to oneself, your
- 5:57values and personality. And that is You know,
- 6:01while it sounds simple and we could probably
- 6:03all pull that definition off the cuff, it's more
- 6:07difficult to live in practice when we're trying
- 6:09to be all things to all people. However, yes,
- 6:13however, there's a big but to this. And I use
- 6:16the word respect. You still need to be respectful
- 6:20to others and you can be as well as being authentic
- 6:24to. Right. So we've presented and we share about
- 6:27the importance of being and living authentically.
- 6:30But that also doesn't that doesn't mean you cancel
- 6:32out other people and say, I'm just going to do
- 6:34this to heck with everyone else. Like, I'm just
- 6:37going to leave my family and my kids, whatever,
- 6:39because I want to go, you know, Rome, South America.
- 6:42You still have responsibility and there are still
- 6:45things and we want to communicate that because
- 6:48we believe strongly in that. It's not a license.
- 6:51Right. Absolutely. And then how do you, you know,
- 6:53if someone's struggling with being authentic
- 6:55and it's sort of, you know, people talk about
- 6:57balance, especially with women, which I hate
- 6:58because we're not balancing anything, we're juggling.
- 7:00So sometimes you have to prioritize work and
- 7:02sometimes it's your kids and, you know, everything's
- 7:04just kind of up in the air at times and you're
- 7:06just trying to get things done. So how do you
- 7:09go through that and be authentic and have that
- 7:11balance of respect? Because I get it. It would
- 7:13be amazing to say, you know what, I'm good. I'm
- 7:15just going to go on a two week vacation, see
- 7:17everybody, you know, I'll be back. You know,
- 7:20how do you give advice on being able to do that
- 7:22and be productive, essentially? Well, I think
- 7:25some of it when we present and share, we use
- 7:28our real lives and as examples, you know, I think
- 7:30so. I'm one of those people I don't do well with
- 7:3220 page manuals or 50 page manuals. I like to
- 7:35hear other people's stories and how that and
- 7:37what's relatable. So we share a lot of that.
- 7:40We found that with ourselves. There are certain
- 7:42things, you know, when I was my kids were marching
- 7:45band, I was like. What is the least I can do
- 7:48to put a check mark beside my name to help me?
- 7:51And I say that because I just realized I felt
- 7:54like I needed to contribute, which I did. But
- 7:56I don't. That's not my kind of thing. And they're
- 7:58different things. When my kids were little, I
- 8:01kind of backed away from the workforce, work
- 8:03part time a little to be with them. In my case,
- 8:06that's OK. That that was my choice. It's not
- 8:09everyone's choice. But to give myself freedom
- 8:11and others, that's my choice. And you've had
- 8:13other different. I have. I mean, Where I was
- 8:15at 40 was nowhere near where I thought I was
- 8:18going to be at 40 or even 45. Because she's now
- 8:2145. I'm staying at 40. 42. I was wondering where
- 8:26she was going with that. But where I thought
- 8:29I was going to be in life, I felt like a big
- 8:31fat failure. because I was trying to juggle a
- 8:35career and trying to juggle raising kids and
- 8:38being a perfect neighbor and a perfect wife and
- 8:41perfect employee. And none of those cups were
- 8:44filled to the rim. I felt like a constant failure.
- 8:49I had a failed marriage. And that's tough. That's
- 8:53tough. So to answer your question, how do you
- 8:57deal with that? You have to put what's most important
- 8:59at that stage in your life first. And I think
- 9:02what we've found is where we are in life now,
- 9:05because we've had so many years of corporate
- 9:08life and business ownership, you can still, I
- 9:12use the word pivot, but you can still embrace
- 9:15other opportunities. We're in our second half.
- 9:18You can tell we're not slowing down. Right. And
- 9:21the word I use frequently is grace. You give
- 9:25yourself grace. You give grace a lot of times
- 9:27to other people, but you have to give grace to
- 9:29yourself. I was way too hard on myself. Way too
- 9:33hard on myself. And then how did you get past
- 9:35that? How did you adjust and be able to take
- 9:38a step back and realize that you maybe need to
- 9:41recalibrate certain areas of your life, but to
- 9:42give yourself grace? For me, I... had to come
- 9:46back to what was most important. And at that
- 9:49point in my life, it was my children. And I had
- 9:51to think, what kind of example am I showing them?
- 9:54Were they going to be more impressed over the
- 9:56fact that I have this wonderful career and so
- 9:59forth? Are they going to be more impressed that
- 10:00I'm with them? And I can always go back to work.
- 10:05I mean, I'm still work. I had to. I had to as
- 10:07a single mother at one point. But I just knew
- 10:10that. I can always go back to something. I'll
- 10:12never have that moment with my kids again. And
- 10:14you're the same way with that. And I share that.
- 10:16I say that heart story because I look at that
- 10:18was before my life, before and thereafter, because
- 10:21I had a condition that as a doctor said, when
- 10:23you had symptoms, it was too late. So when you
- 10:25realize that any day I could have dropped over,
- 10:28I had a congenital heart defect, every day is
- 10:30that much more precious and positive. And certainly
- 10:33my faith, and I know that's with you as well,
- 10:35you know, there's so many things that we, it's
- 10:37major on the majors, not the minors. And we all
- 10:40get caught up in stuff. But is that really important
- 10:43at the end of the day? Right. Oh, I love that.
- 10:46That's awesome. When we speak, we'll have women
- 10:49coming up to us afterwards saying, boy, I really
- 10:51resonate with Cathy. Or then others will be like,
- 10:53boy, Patty, I really resonate with you. I've
- 10:55had the same struggle. So it's really nice that
- 10:57we have the balance of our life experiences to
- 11:00share with audiences of, wow. And asking that
- 11:04same question, how did you survive this? How
- 11:06did you not only survive? but how are you now
- 11:08thriving from it? Thriving. Absolutely. No, I
- 11:11love that. And I love the second half, right?
- 11:12That you're saying that now you're thriving and
- 11:14the second half, you guys are not slowing down.
- 11:16I feel like you're both all over the place doing
- 11:18amazing things. started yet. You know, I was
- 11:21thinking the minor on the minors before we went
- 11:23on the air here. She's like, your hair and I'm
- 11:25going quit fluffing your hair. And she's like,
- 11:27you need to fluff your hair. And I'm like, quick.
- 11:29And then hey, Betsy. Fluffing her hair, fluffing
- 11:34your hair. But that's kind of that minor on the
- 11:37minors. And you know, there might have been a
- 11:38point in our life that that was us. You people
- 11:40get hung up on those kind of things. Now to us.
- 11:42That's hilarious. That's our differences. But
- 11:45I think back to, you know, when I first first
- 11:47especially met you, Kathy, you know, is that
- 11:49the Salvation Army and you would you'd be emceeing
- 11:51Shoestrite and you were very good at being not
- 11:54very good because it's who you are being authentic,
- 11:56right? Like you sit up there, you can make fun
- 11:58of yourself. You could be like, oh, I'm Patty's
- 11:59twin. I could, you know, like you just were very
- 12:01good about putting yourself out there and laughing
- 12:04at yourself. And I mean, that was what makes
- 12:06you so relatable is the fact that like I can.
- 12:10It's confidence. You know, you have to have a
- 12:13certain level of confidence, not arrogance, but
- 12:15confident. Well, and I think also, you know,
- 12:18when we do this presentation, that the first
- 12:20point is authentic, but then the second part
- 12:22is active. And we go into because I mentioned,
- 12:25Patty helped me change my health. And if you
- 12:27don't have a healthy body, mind and spirit, it's
- 12:31hard to be authentic. Because if you're miserable
- 12:34within your own skin physically, that creates
- 12:37a whole lot of other challenges. So that goes
- 12:40into it, certainly from her background, but I
- 12:42learned that because we say, oh, you know that,
- 12:45but it's so important. Let's dig into the active,
- 12:48because I think that's so important, and I know
- 12:50that's a big part of your platform is being active.
- 12:52So what does that look like? What does that mean?
- 12:54I mean, you just started to touch on why is that
- 12:56so important? Well, again, when Patty said invest
- 13:00in your health, I lost 50 pounds, and I've kept
- 13:02it off first time ever versus all the yo -yo
- 13:05dieting and so forth. So it's more than just
- 13:07losing weight. When I did that, I went, I mean,
- 13:10I stopped taking medications. I went from pre
- 13:12-diabetic to normal. I don't take, you know,
- 13:15my everything changed as far as my health. And
- 13:18that even changed, not that I was depressed and
- 13:21so forth, but it changes everything when you
- 13:23feel good. It feels good to feel good. And it's
- 13:26hard to be authentic when you're miserable within
- 13:28your own skin. So that was my change of life,
- 13:32and because of my health, it changed so many
- 13:34other things. And we see it every day in our
- 13:37studios, Betsy, where individuals have spent
- 13:40their lives focusing on other things that mattered,
- 13:44or what they perceive mattered most in their
- 13:46lives. We're given one body in this world. And
- 13:50you got one chance. It's one car. If you were
- 13:53given the opportunity to own one car in your
- 13:55life, how would you take care of it? Right. And
- 13:59that's your body. And as Cathy says, yes, it's
- 14:02physical, but we know that physical activity,
- 14:06what we eat. really is just a part of your total
- 14:11being. It's how you act, how you sleep, how you
- 14:13treat others, how you perform in your job, how
- 14:16you perform as a parent, a spouse. You know,
- 14:18the list goes on and on and on. And it all starts
- 14:21with how you treat yourself both from a physical
- 14:24component and from a nutritional component. And
- 14:27from that, we've created giving wellness. So
- 14:31because of Patty and the impact and things that
- 14:35we did just kind of organically, you know, we
- 14:38created this eight and people asking me, how'd
- 14:40you do that? How'd you lose weight? What happened?
- 14:42You know, and it's really it's healthy habits,
- 14:44right? There's no magic formula. We're not going
- 14:46to say go take medication or anything else. I
- 14:48want to do what's good and sustainable, sustainable.
- 14:52Right. So we created giving wellness, which is
- 14:55an eight week healthy habits challenge to help
- 14:58others find a kind of focus on those things,
- 15:00whether it's fruits and vegetables, less sugar
- 15:02movement. and all of the things that we've had
- 15:04over 200 people. Over 200, we are now promoting
- 15:08it to a corporate environment because companies
- 15:12are finding, obviously it's a win -win, right?
- 15:14You have a healthier employee. It's a healthier
- 15:16employer. You go into the whole... insurance
- 15:20claims, that sort of deal. It's not only that,
- 15:23but think about the way the workforce is now.
- 15:24It's very disconnected. We're virtual, right?
- 15:28So we have employers coming to us saying, I want
- 15:31my employees to connect better. Do you have a
- 15:33way for it? Yes, we do. In a friendly challenge
- 15:37with accountability, developing sustainable,
- 15:40healthy habits for them. And in addition to after
- 15:44an eight week program where they're able to have
- 15:47these sustainable eating better. movement, there
- 15:50is an additional give back to a nonprofit of
- 15:55their choice. And that's why the name giving
- 16:00wellness to yourself and others. And you know,
- 16:03it's a win win all the way around. I am now a
- 16:05spoke model. Congrats. I have put myself at the
- 16:11level of being a before and after. I'm like 17
- 16:14magazine before and after, or Glamour's do and
- 16:17don't with my eyes crossed out. Well, and Betsy,
- 16:19going back to what we were seeing before, the
- 16:21fitness came really easy to me, right? And I
- 16:23said, I'm a big believer that everybody's given
- 16:25gifts. That's my gift. I know how to help others
- 16:29get healthier. She's very empathetic. Kathy's
- 16:32very empathetic to it because It wasn't easy
- 16:35for her. Sure. And a lot of people can relate
- 16:38to that. Right. Right. I mean, yeah. Yeah. You
- 16:42know, I, I love to walk and I walking has become
- 16:46my stress reliever versus why he's on the porch
- 16:50every evening. I mean, I had both, but yeah,
- 16:53it's a balance. Trying to, you know, be the giving
- 16:56all the spoke. But you know that and being outside
- 17:00and it's amazing. And I was the first person
- 17:02when I started to say, I'm never gonna want vegetables.
- 17:06I'm never gonna want... you do things change
- 17:09your habits and you but you just have to do it
- 17:11right right and it's like you said it's nothing
- 17:13crazy it's nothing like right now from the beginning
- 17:16yeah if you told me you have to go buy this special
- 17:18food i'm out yeah i quit right well you know
- 17:22it's so funny i've always been into health and
- 17:24and wellness and and being active but i think
- 17:26you know in my 20s it was more like how i looked
- 17:29right like it was just about like oh i need to
- 17:31lose five pounds i have to wear a bathing suit
- 17:33it was very physical like that i would be focused
- 17:35on and then i think just as i I got older and
- 17:37realized that was also like a stress reliever.
- 17:40And, you know, to go to yoga or go to the gym
- 17:42or go on a run like made you feel better. And
- 17:45now it's like older, like in your 40s and you're
- 17:47like, oh shit, like I have to. about like lifting
- 17:50weights more and you know, not getting off your
- 17:52process and eating better and looking especially
- 17:55at the older generation who has so many health
- 17:57issues and whether it's high blood pressure or
- 17:59cholesterol, whatever it is that there's things
- 18:01that we can be doing now to not have to have
- 18:04you know, this not great lifestyle in the future.
- 18:06It's funny how that sort of changes as you get
- 18:08older, at least for me where it's like my why
- 18:10my reasons and but I enjoy it right like to your
- 18:13point, I enjoy working out and it makes me feel
- 18:16better. But it's just finding what you can do.
- 18:18and what's sustainable, because I think that's
- 18:20probably one of the biggest things you see. I
- 18:22mean, we're all guilty of it at some point where
- 18:24you get on, whether it's a fad diet or a crash
- 18:27diet or some crazy exercise regimen, that's just
- 18:30not sustainable. So it's like finding that, that
- 18:33thing, right, that's sustainable and know that
- 18:35you might have a bad day or a bad, bad weekend,
- 18:38but it's okay. Like just move on and get back
- 18:41on track. So I think we get so focused on being
- 18:44a hundred percent and that's, that's not going
- 18:46to happen. You're going to have to balance. You
- 18:48can still have wine and cheese on the porch too,
- 18:50but maybe after your walk. And you nailed it
- 18:53too. It's find your why. Right. We talk about
- 18:55find your why and that varies for everyone. And
- 18:59also you also hit on the point where your, your
- 19:03reasons do change every time your fitness evolves
- 19:06over your decades. And I think us coming from,
- 19:08you know, we've worked. over 40 years in, in,
- 19:14uh, I'm surprised you didn't say she's older,
- 19:16but she is, she's older, but that's beside the
- 19:18point. A year and a half. And it does. So what
- 19:23the good news is it's never too late. It's never
- 19:25too late to have healthier habits. And we talk
- 19:29about exercise. We don't even use the word exercise.
- 19:31We talk about movement or find the movement that
- 19:33you like. When we go into schools or organizations,
- 19:38we don't teach that to five -year -olds or 70
- 19:40-year -olds. And you know, when we talk about
- 19:42this, what you do as a woman, as a wife, mother,
- 19:45friend, has a ripple effect on the people around
- 19:48you. And we talk about that, setting an example
- 19:51for your kids. We just, my husband and I, we
- 19:54went on a cruise last week with my 78 year old
- 19:56mother who was inspired by Brian and Patty. She'd
- 19:59been overweight my whole life, lost 60 pounds.
- 20:01And she went on the cruise with us, kind of a
- 20:03bucket list thing. She could not have done that
- 20:05years ago without changing her health. So it's
- 20:08not just a matter of losing weight or looking
- 20:10better. No matter how do you want to live, right?
- 20:13What kind of example are you being for your kids?
- 20:16Not just with health, but all of these other
- 20:18things. Confidence, living authentically. You
- 20:20can't expect your daughters to be authentic and
- 20:23healthy if you're not. You were just talking
- 20:26yesterday about birthdays, how some people love
- 20:28birthdays and how other people hate birthdays.
- 20:31We love birthdays. Because we're not dead! Me
- 20:34too! I agree! I totally agree. If you don't have
- 20:37a birthday, you're dead! All right, that's in
- 20:43our presentation, so we just get excited. We
- 20:46were so professional up to that point. I know.
- 20:51I spoke to a group at a recent college, and the
- 20:53kids seemed not disinterested, and I'm, you know,
- 20:5630, 40, 10 years older than they are. And I said,
- 21:00you know, I know you're thinking you're never
- 21:01going to be big to be my age, but if you don't,
- 21:04you're dead. So plan accordingly. Yep. No, I
- 21:08agree. I'm a big fan of birthdays. I totally
- 21:10agree because you're right. The alternative is
- 21:12you're dead. Sorry, I had to get that off. All
- 21:16right. All right. Continue. Yes. Next question.
- 21:19No, no. You're good. So just one more thing about
- 21:21being active. So if someone's listening to this
- 21:23and they're like, wow, I really need to get my
- 21:25act together. You know, I'm in my 40s or 50s
- 21:27or whatever age. What's like, how do you how
- 21:29do you get started if you just are in a rut and
- 21:31you're not sure how to get the momentum at least
- 21:34to start headed in the right direction? If someone
- 21:37is clueless and doesn't even know where to begin,
- 21:40consult a professional. Consult a credible professional
- 21:43health and wellness. And then don't set these
- 21:47lofty goals. We've had clients come in where,
- 21:50hey, I'm going to go climb Mount Kilimanjaro.
- 21:53That's not really a realistic goal to set first.
- 21:57So set smaller, attainable goals. And then once
- 22:00you achieve those, go on to the next goal. It
- 22:02may be just, you know what? I'm going to go for
- 22:05a walk after dinner tonight. Yeah. I love that.
- 22:09Go ahead. I was just going to say, I mean, my
- 22:11journey, I lost average that losing my weight
- 22:14a half a pound a week. That was over, you know,
- 22:17to lose 50 plus pounds. Fun fact, now she has
- 22:22a streak of, well, the end of, well, soon it'll
- 22:26be three years that I've walked every single
- 22:29day, 10 ,000 plus steps. Oh my gosh. I know,
- 22:33and I work at that. But little things along the
- 22:35way, I mean, I worked, worked with our team are
- 22:38here and like little goals, like, okay, every
- 22:41morning you seem to eat pretzels for a snack,
- 22:43why don't you have a piece of fruit instead?
- 22:45You know, so and little things, because if you
- 22:48told me here's all this plan, again, 20 page
- 22:50plan, I couldn't do it, but I could do one little
- 22:52thing at a time. And then that adds up to big
- 22:55things. Yep, I love that. It's just like everything
- 22:57else. I think sometimes people get paralyzed
- 23:00because they get overwhelmed by trying to be
- 23:02up here when it's like, no, just start here.
- 23:04It's like everything else. Just take some baby
- 23:05steps and head in the right direction. I call
- 23:08that paralysis by analysis. You look at it too
- 23:11much and then you do nothing. Yep. Everything.
- 23:15Or you're like, I'll start next Sunday. And then
- 23:17it's Monday. And then you're like, oh, I mean,
- 23:18I'll start next Sunday. Like, just start tomorrow.
- 23:20Like, it's OK. You know, I just said that today.
- 23:23I was on the cruise. I gained three pounds on
- 23:26the cruise, which I was shocked that it was only
- 23:27three pounds. However, in the past, it would
- 23:31have been like, oh, I gained weight. I might
- 23:32as well just keep it going until I might as well
- 23:34eat the doughnut today. Well, I eat the doughnut.
- 23:37Look, heck, I might as well get fries for lunch.
- 23:38Oh, what the heck. I'll go get. Now I'm like,
- 23:41okay, I gained three pounds. And I go back to
- 23:43the habits like in giving wellness that made
- 23:46me successful because I know I'll repivot and
- 23:49then go back, recalibrate. We were at an awards
- 23:52luncheon yesterday and I looked over, I was very
- 23:54proud of her. You know how you have the plate
- 23:56and then have the dessert in front of you. It
- 23:58was a lemon cheesecake. I'm like, whoa. I ate
- 24:02two bites of the crust. She only had two bites.
- 24:05That's good. She was going like this, and so
- 24:08that kind of helps. But if you have someone that
- 24:09followed you around smacking food out of your
- 24:11hand, that would be helpful too. It helps, yeah.
- 24:13She throws her trash on your plate, yeah, whatever.
- 24:15That's costly, so. That's hilarious. That's awesome.
- 24:19That's great. Well, so the last piece, which
- 24:21you kind of touched on, is if you're not dead,
- 24:23you're alive. You're celebrating birthday, so
- 24:25talk to me about being ageless and what that
- 24:27means to you. Well there again, so many times
- 24:30we say, oh, I can't do that. I'm at this age
- 24:33whether you're young like oh I'm this age and
- 24:35then you get older like I can't do that. I'm
- 24:37a perfect example. I'm 59. Oh, I said it wine
- 24:44and I'm not dead but Just recently, I changed
- 24:49what I'm doing, stepped back down from my full
- 24:53-time job, still doing some, but opened an LLC
- 24:56to do some things, consulting, and even things
- 24:58with giving wellness and so forth and speaking
- 25:01that I've always wanted to do. I would have probably
- 25:05said in the past, I'm 59, I'm getting close to
- 25:08retirement. No, I'm just, um, ageless is, you
- 25:12know, there's still opportunity and to change,
- 25:14not to be irresponsible. It's not like I said,
- 25:16I'm going to go cash in all my money and move
- 25:18to Tahiti, you know, without a plan, but to make
- 25:21reasonable choices to do things that I more want
- 25:24to do the same you did with going to full time
- 25:27with your businesses. I think if you are active,
- 25:29it's easier to be ageless. You're filling yourself,
- 25:34your brain's working, you're firing on all cylinders.
- 25:36It's like, what can I do now? I don't want to
- 25:38slow down. I don't want to slow down. People
- 25:40at our age are retiring, really looking at their
- 25:43retirement plans and thinking, when can I cash
- 25:45out? When can I stop? I don't want to slow down.
- 25:49You know, I don't want to slow down. It's more
- 25:50making, being able to make choices of things
- 25:52maybe you want to do more. Smart choices. Right,
- 25:54right. choices that makes sense. And we're at
- 25:58a point where we know that we have gifts that
- 26:00we need to be sharing with others. And that includes
- 26:04from the workplace environment, from a health
- 26:06and wellness in place environment. So, and you
- 26:09know, it helps to go through life having a sense
- 26:11of humor and being able to laugh at yourself.
- 26:14You said that earlier and others. And I think
- 26:17that's something we say we have a lot of differences,
- 26:19but we also have the same basic attitude, like
- 26:22don't sweat the small stuff. You can sit in it
- 26:26for a minute, but then move on. It's okay to
- 26:29be down, just don't stay down. That's very true.
- 26:34And have a friend who says, if you don't stop,
- 26:36I'm going to punch you in the head. That's kind
- 26:39of what we feel. Violence kind of goes a long
- 26:41way, so that's fine. We won't allow each other
- 26:45to stay down. I love that. And find that accountability
- 26:50person in your life. I was going to say. That's
- 26:53kind of ageless. I spent way too many years of
- 26:55my life trying to be with certain people or not
- 26:59that I don't respect or I'm cordial with people,
- 27:02but surrounding myself with those people who
- 27:04make me a better person and vice versa. I can
- 27:07remember younger in my career, I felt like, boy,
- 27:09I just didn't fit in. I thought differently.
- 27:12I thought differently. I wanted to go about it
- 27:14differently. I was a hard worker. And I'm like,
- 27:17gosh, am I in this alone? I would say to women
- 27:19out there, Your tribe's still out there. Don't
- 27:23give up. Don't feel like you're still behind
- 27:25your people right there there and they're looking
- 27:27for you, too I love that. And I talk about circles
- 27:30all the time because I think you have to have
- 27:32a really good circle. And a lot of us have different
- 27:34circles, right? You might have one that's from
- 27:36like your neighborhood friends or, you know,
- 27:38high school friends or whoever it is. But it's
- 27:40having those circles of people who are going
- 27:42to cheer for you, maybe smack you up against
- 27:44that head if you need it. You know, when you're
- 27:46when you're thinking negatively or just need
- 27:48to get out of the funk that you're in. So I think
- 27:50that's so important. And it could be one person.
- 27:52It could be five people. But you have to have
- 27:54that tribe, that circle who is going to be there
- 27:56to support you. but also sometimes nudge you
- 27:59when you need that too. And be authentic with
- 28:01you too, right? To have those authentic conversations.
- 28:05Right. You know, one of my favorite words is
- 28:07perspective. And I think working in the nonprofit,
- 28:09like at the Salvation Army, that came into play.
- 28:12Things that I thought were the end of the world.
- 28:14And then you see people struggling more. It's
- 28:17not that big of a deal. It's not life shattering.
- 28:20There certainly are life shattering experiences
- 28:23and circumstances, but most things we get ourselves
- 28:25all worked up about. aren't that big a deal.
- 28:28Right. Yeah. No, that's very good. So it's finding
- 28:30the right people to be around with and finding
- 28:32something that you love to do, you know, kind
- 28:34of going back to the fact of saying that you
- 28:35guys are not anywhere close to retiring. It's
- 28:37because you love what you do and you found your
- 28:40purpose and you enjoy doing it. So it doesn't
- 28:42probably feel like work when you get to choose
- 28:44what you're doing and you're making a difference
- 28:45and working with each other. Oh, yeah. Sometimes
- 28:49it's really, really hard. It's really hard. You
- 28:53might need a new coworker or whatever. You know,
- 28:55and again, I have two daughters, you have kids.
- 28:58We have four weddings in the next couple. We
- 29:01have one, but I have daughters, 25 and 23. And
- 29:06I see, and I see myself in them and a younger
- 29:08thing. But again, I want a model for them. And
- 29:10I know the struggle that's natural parts of life,
- 29:13but to say, Hey, this is not a big deal. This
- 29:15is not something to focus on. And, you know,
- 29:18look at the big things and enjoy every moment
- 29:20of what you're doing. Right. What would be your
- 29:24big takeaway for your kids? Like if you could
- 29:25instill, I mean, saying one thing is kind of
- 29:27hard, but like sort of one perspective for your
- 29:29kids and as they've, or that you try to instill
- 29:32since your kids are older, but just something
- 29:33that you hope that your kids take away. I just
- 29:36said to you, I said, boy, it's a nice feeling
- 29:39when your kids are using your words and wisdom
- 29:42to you. And when one of the phrases I would always
- 29:50say to them, And there's going to be moments
- 29:52in life. It's not if, it's when, right? Something's
- 29:55going to happen that you're not going to agree
- 29:56with. That's going to happen. You know, when
- 29:59things go wrong, just don't go wrong with them.
- 30:01Stay the course, right? Get back on course. It's
- 30:05going to happen. The waves are going to hit the
- 30:07ship. And the thing I always said to my girls
- 30:09today is do what's right and smart. You know,
- 30:13there are certain things that are right and wrong,
- 30:15and you always want to do what's right. The second
- 30:17thing is, do what's smart. There's some things
- 30:20that aren't necessarily right or wrong, but it's
- 30:22stupid. So don't do stupid, do smart. Do right
- 30:30things for the right reason. and my girls will
- 30:35laugh, but that's kind of I gave them seven things
- 30:37to look for in a voice and say we're in fifth
- 30:40grade and they get my one daughter would call
- 30:42me and go mom on a date and say he ordered appetizers
- 30:45number five so you know that's a whole story
- 30:48but um you know you have to do it again even
- 30:51keep it fun with your kids if you're always harping
- 30:53and i know you and your kids they call you every
- 30:55day oh well adult kids you know you have to my
- 30:59chops yes well of course i thought of you at
- 31:03least I think that speaks to her relationship
- 31:05with her kids. And that's what you want. Your
- 31:08adult kids are fun, but you build that all through
- 31:11their lives. Nice. That's great. All right. I'm
- 31:14going to end with a quick lightning round. So
- 31:16just, I did not tell you guys this ahead of time.
- 31:18I think you'll be fine knowing the two of your
- 31:19personalities to see what you come up with. One
- 31:23habit that keeps you authentic. I have the same
- 31:26routine every morning. I get up, I take a walk
- 31:29with the dogs and the husband. I mean, not necessarily
- 31:31in that order. And I do a little devotional.
- 31:34We have breakfast and I kind of do a little quiet
- 31:36time and devotional every morning. That keeps
- 31:38me kind of focused on what my day is. Every morning.
- 31:42Nice. I mean, the first word that comes to my
- 31:44mind is fashion. I don't ever... Fashion. Perfect
- 31:48for you. I never want to look like a dud out
- 31:53there. I always want to put my best face forward.
- 31:58You do. You do a great job at that. But I'm not
- 32:01going to comment. All right. Favorite way to
- 32:04stay active outside the gym? Walking. Walking.
- 32:08I love to walk. I love to be outside and walking.
- 32:11I like to be with my animals. She has goats.
- 32:14She has goats. Wow. That's fun. All right, a
- 32:19woman who inspires you with her ageless energy.
- 32:22It's my grandmother. I loved her my whole life.
- 32:25She passed away a couple years ago. Ironically,
- 32:27she started a business, her own restaurant, at
- 32:29age 58. And that kind of gave me, she wanted
- 32:33to do that her whole life. So when I was toying
- 32:35with what I was going to do, I'm like, this is
- 32:36what grandma did and now that's what I'm going
- 32:38to do. I didn't know when she was alive, but
- 32:42I know now it was my mom. And it wasn't a physical
- 32:45energy that she had, but it was a spiritual energy.
- 32:48There wasn't a day that went by that she didn't
- 32:50pray for our family and wish us the best. And
- 32:52I've kind of rewarded the family as well. That's
- 32:56very important too. I love that. What's one thing
- 32:59you'll never apologize for? My high heels. Again,
- 33:03it's back to fashion. Back to fashion. She's
- 33:06authentic. I know. I wear sensible shoes. My
- 33:09values and my defense of those values. That's
- 33:13good. Let's do that. One more to describe each
- 33:15other. We've already said it numerous times on
- 33:18this broadcast for Kathy. It's definitely authenticity.
- 33:21I'd say the same thing. And that's probably our
- 33:24common denominator. Yeah. Our values, but also
- 33:27being real. I mean, we can laugh. She can make
- 33:29fun of my shoes. I don't care. I can make fun
- 33:31of her eyelashes. I don't, she might care, but
- 33:35you know, that again, majoring on the majors,
- 33:38not the trivial one. Well, this is great, ladies.
- 33:42Thank you so much for being here. I appreciate
- 33:43that. And I love the authentic, active, ageless,
- 33:46triple threat. And if people want to connect
- 33:48with you, where can they find you? They can find

- 34:23Patty and Kathy, thank you for reminding us what

- 34:28active in mind and body, and ageless in spirit,
- 34:31no matter what age. Here's my challenge to you
- 34:33listeners this week. Pick one way to be more
- 34:36authentic. one way to stay active, and one way
- 34:38to embrace your ageless energy. It doesn't have
- 34:41to be big, it just has to be intentional. If
