- 0:00Speaker 1: Guys, what's going on?
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to the Steep Stuff Podcast.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I am your host, james Lauriello, and today, guys, this is a substuff episode, but we're just going to talk about series and all.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I've got some rants for you, I've got some results for you, I've got some stats for you and we are just going to.
- 0:18Speaker 1: We're going to chat about series.
- 0:19Speaker 1: We're going to chat about two things we're going to chat about series and all, and we're going to talk about Killian.
- 0:24Speaker 1: All right, that that is what we're going to chat about today.
- 0:26Speaker 1: We're going to start off with series and all, because that flows into Killian.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Uh, guys, if you're unfamiliar, series and all happened this past Saturday.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Um, what an insane race, absolutely bananas.
- 0:36Speaker 1: The fifth stop on the golden trail world series takes place in Sinal, switzerland.
- 0:40Speaker 1: It literally goes from a town called Siri to a town called Zinal.
- 0:44Speaker 1: If you didn't know that Pretty dope, let's chat course records.
- 0:48Speaker 1: The men's course record formerly was 225.35, set by none other than Killian Jornet.
- 0:53Speaker 1: The men's record is, and still stands, by Maude Mathis was set in 2019, along with Killian Jornet in 249.20.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Course itself is 31k, along with Killian Jornet in 249.20.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Course itself is 31K.
- 1:08Speaker 1: For you Americans out there, that's 19.26 miles.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Jesus Christ.
- 1:11Speaker 1: With 2,200 meters of vertical, that's about 7,217 feet, this is a mass participation event.
- 1:19Speaker 1: When I say that, I mean it's like 6,300 people run this race.
- 1:22Speaker 1: That's bananas.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I can't think of anything in America that's even close to that, other than like marathons.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Maybe I don't think we have anything in the trail world that even looks similar to that.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Pretty wild.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Let's talk prize money.
- 1:36Speaker 1: First place 2,000 Swiss francs for the male and female who wins Course record.
- 1:42Speaker 1: 6,000 Swiss francs for those of you who cracked the course record.
- 1:45Speaker 1: 6,000 Swiss francs For those of you who crack this, the course record.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Now, the reason that was at 6,000 Swiss francs is because I think it's like a thousand or 2000 extra a year.
- 1:54Speaker 1: They bump it up.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Um, of course, record previously was set in 2019.
- 1:58Speaker 1: That all changes.
- 1:59Speaker 1: This past weekend, though.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Um, what a crazy race.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 2:03Speaker 1: If you guys didn't follow along, hop on YouTube after you finish this episode and watch the live stream.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Just like absolute bananas If you fast forward.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Actually, I'll tell you later when to fast forward and where to fast forward to.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Let's talk results.
- 2:17Speaker 1: We're going to talk about the women's side first and then we're going to get into the men's side.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Pretty straightforward, just an amazing race on both gender sides.
- 2:24Speaker 1: The women absolutely crushed it.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Um, jolene Chippenago, from Kenya, in first place in two hours 54 minutes and six seconds the only woman on the day to go under two or three hours.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Absolute congratulations.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So the race itself was really fun to follow along.
- 2:41Speaker 1: The live stream scout jolene and mataloria just kind of went at it just like back and forth, back and forth.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Uh, joyce naru, who was my first place pick, was also in the mix all day.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Um unfortunately fell back.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Just a really tough race for her.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Um, just absolutely incredible.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Jolene was just like absolutely ate up the field.
- 3:01Speaker 1: Uh, it was really fun to watch scout just absolutely chase.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Um, and it was just it really fun to watch Scout just absolutely chase and it was fun to follow along.
- 3:07Speaker 1: The women's side of the field was just crazy.
- 3:09Speaker 1: So yeah, jolene took the dub in 2.54.06.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Scout Atkin of Great Britain was in second place in three hours two minutes and 21 seconds.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Madalina Floria from Solomon, romanian athlete.
- 3:22Speaker 1: Three hours four minutes 29 seconds.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Filaris Kazang I believe I probably butchered that name.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Three hours four minutes 29 seconds.
- 3:32Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Three hours five minutes, 12 seconds.
- 3:35Speaker 1: My vision's going in fifth place with some.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Christina Simone in three hours seven minutes 51 seconds.
- 3:41Speaker 1: In sixth place was Anna Gibson.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Big shout out to Anna Gibson, the American.
- 3:45Speaker 1: We got two Americans in the top 10.
- 3:48Speaker 1: How bananas is that?
- 3:49Speaker 1: Anna Gibson got it done.
- 3:51Speaker 1: In sixth place in three hours eight minutes 39 seconds.
- 3:54Speaker 1: In seventh place was Sophia Loughley in three hours nine minutes 30 seconds.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Unfortunately, as soon as I'm recording this, I just saw a post on Instagram.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Sophia just pulled a plug on the rest of her season, um, stating that she had been kind of overdoing it.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Um, you know, I really want to wish her the absolute best of luck in recovery, uh, for the rest of the season.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Hopefully she gets healthy and fit.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Um, and just absolutely crushes it on the ski side of the business, pretty sweet.
- 4:21Speaker 1: And eighth place was Oriel Lucia in three minutes.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Three hours 10 minutes 46 seconds.
- 4:26Speaker 1: And ninth place was Julia Lalong in three hours 12 minutes 11 seconds.
- 4:31Speaker 1: And in 10th place, as I predicted, finally got one of these right was Caitlin Felder just reliable athlete usually in that seventh to 10th place.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Super reliable, three hours 12 minutes 54 seconds.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Caitlin Felder, very consistent.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Uh, big shout out to her.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Um, some more news on the women's side.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Like I said, I just think it was an amazing battle from first to 10th.
- 4:52Speaker 1: All of these ladies absolutely crushed it.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Like I said, big shout out to Jolene for the only female to go under three hours at this race.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Now, it was a very hot race.
- 5:01Speaker 1: People were sweating, as you could probably tell if you watch the live stream.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Just really fun to follow along.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Yeah, just really fun to follow along the women's side.
- 5:09Speaker 1: All right, let's chat men.
- 5:11Speaker 1: This is where my rant is going to be coming in.
- 5:13Speaker 1: I'm going to talk about the top 10.
- 5:14Speaker 1: And then I'm going to rant after this, because I just witnessed something that I have just like not witnessed in trail running before.
- 5:21Speaker 1: It was really fun.
- 5:23Speaker 1: In first place and course record the probably the greatest of all time Mr Killian Jornet in two hours 25 minutes 34 seconds, one second under his course record that he set in 2019 of two hours 25 minutes 35 seconds.
- 5:38Speaker 1: In second place was Phil Amon Kiriego.
- 5:41Speaker 1: Phil Amon, if you're listening to this dude, I take back everything I said about you in the pre-race.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Jesus Christ, what a race, absolutely insane.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Second place in two hours 25 minutes 36 seconds.
- 5:53Speaker 1: In third place was Mr Patrick Kip and Yago in two hours 26 minutes 59 seconds.
- 5:58Speaker 1: In fourth place was Joseph at Kip Kip Kip Kipotrick in two hours 31 minutes 35 seconds.
- 6:08Speaker 1: The first through fourth was absolutely bananas.
- 6:10Speaker 1: The way these guys just absolutely threw down, it was just so incredible.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And fifth place was Roberto de Lorenzi in two hours 32 minutes 26 seconds.
- 6:18Speaker 1: In sixth place was Paul Machoka in two hours 32 minutes 35 seconds.
- 6:25Speaker 1: And seventh place was Sylvan Sylvan Chichard, french athlete, in two hours 32 minutes 45 seconds.
- 6:31Speaker 1: I feel like six through eighth are just like new dudes that I've never heard of.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Um.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And eighth place was um Jonathan Sands, a Colombian athlete, in two hours 3245 as well.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Um, just like, how about that?
- 6:48Speaker 1: We got a South American athlete in the top 10.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Um, just absolutely, uh, absolutely big deal for, uh, for Columbia.
- 6:55Speaker 1: So pretty exciting for that.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I don't really know how many other um South American countries have had athletes in the top 10 of series and all that's something good.
- 7:06Speaker 1: I want to go back and check on to see if we can get some data on that.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Uh, this is why I need, like an aid station fireball or someone to uh fact check me and accompany me on, on, on on these rants.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Um.
- 7:17Speaker 1: In ninth place was Remy Bonet.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Uh, two hours 33 minutes 57 seconds.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I think Remy had a tough day out there.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Kind of like I said in the pre-race, I kind of pinned him for like third or nothing.
- 7:28Speaker 1: So good on him for kind of staying in the race and not quitting fricking solid result.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Um, and 10th place was Ezekiel Ruto in two hours 35 minutes 21 seconds.
- 7:41Speaker 1: All right, guys, we're going to talk about Killian.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Listen, this is a rant, I'm just.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I'm just coming here to talk to you about this and just tell you I think what we witnessed on Saturday was was something we might never witness again.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I just think it was something so incredibly special One.
- 7:59Speaker 1: It was Killian resetting the record books for series and all two hours 25 minutes 34 seconds.
- 8:05Speaker 1: But that was not an easy course record.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Okay, that wasn't even close to easy.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I think what was so special about it was it was the first time we ever saw Killian just absolutely pushed to the limit.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Was it was the first time we ever saw Killian just absolutely push to the limit?
- 8:19Speaker 1: For those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about, go on YouTube type in series and all 2024, the live stream.
- 8:23Speaker 1: You don't have to watch the whole thing.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Fast forward to two hours and 40 seconds and you can watch it from two hours and 40, or, sorry, two hours and 40 minutes you watch that from for about 10 minutes.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Okay, it's like the final one and a half to two-ish miles of this race of Killian and Philemon going to the depths of their soul to get this done.
- 8:46Speaker 1: It was the most incredible thing in trail running I think I have ever witnessed.
- 8:50Speaker 1: I'm not going to lie, it was poetry in motion.
- 8:53Speaker 1: For a few reasons it was poetry motion because I've never seen downhill running like that.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Killian just absolutely showed why he's the fucking goat man Like.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I'm going to play this out for you.
- 9:04Speaker 1: Like I said, go on the live stream, watch it for yourself, but I'm going to give you a little break.
- 9:08Speaker 1: By break Killian started slowing down.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Probably this is like mile 17 and a half.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Phil Amon caught Killian.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Killian looked like he was hurting a little bit.
- 9:24Speaker 1: It was like a flat, flat to roller downhill section.
- 9:25Speaker 1: It was like flattish to roller maybe section where Philemon caught Killian and then they went into a technical descent and Killian kind of battled it back and then Philemon caught him again and put like five to 10 seconds on Killian like very quickly.
- 9:38Speaker 1: It almost looked like Philemon had broken the elastic and Killian was done and Killian was in second and Philemon was going to run away with the whole thing.
- 9:45Speaker 1: And then we got into a little bit more of a technical descent with some switchbacks, and the most insane thing I have ever witnessed in my life happened.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Killian, like like a fucking gazelle, jumped down like seven switchbacks to put the move on Philemon and that was the dagger.
- 10:01Speaker 1: That was it.
- 10:02Speaker 1: And then from there it was a foot race to the finish line.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Like you saw in the results, Philemon closed the gap.
- 10:08Speaker 1: I think he like.
- 10:09Speaker 1: I think at one point in time Killian had put like 10 to 15 seconds, maybe a little less, into Philemon and in the final result Philemon was able to close that to two seconds.
- 10:18Speaker 1: But what we witnessed there was something we might never see again.
- 10:22Speaker 1: First of all, killian was pushed to his absolute limit.
- 10:25Speaker 1: You could tell the dude was hurting.
- 10:27Speaker 1: You could tell at the finish line he had given it absolutely everything.
- 10:31Speaker 1: And I don't think because Killian is so good, I don't think you actually ever get to see that, especially on live television.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Uh, it was absolutely insane.
- 10:41Speaker 1: Second thing is, I think Phil Amon's a lot better than we give him credit for, because you saw a prime Killian there at 36 years of age, um, against the Phil Amon who had won last year, coming off a high Like I, you know.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I mean I kind of gave Philemon some doubt going into this race.
- 10:58Speaker 1: That's because I had seen him at other races.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I had personally raced him.
- 11:01Speaker 1: He kicked the shit out of me.
- 11:03Speaker 1: But that said, I thought he was catchable and David Norris did it.
- 11:07Speaker 1: He was able to catch him at Cirque Brighton.
- 11:08Speaker 1: He showed little holes.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Philemon had showed holes in his game.
- 11:13Speaker 1: He had a tough race at Broken Arrow.
- 11:16Speaker 1: It just it didn't seem like series and all is the most competitive race on the mountain race on the planet.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Okay, it just didn't seem like this was gonna be a thing and Phil Amon was able to just have an absolute insane race.
- 11:28Speaker 1: So absolute kudos to him, jesus Christ.
- 11:32Speaker 1: On in third place was Phil, or it was Patrick, and I think Patrick ran the smartest race out of everybody and the reason I'll say that is because I think Patrick knows himself in a lot of ways.
- 11:40Speaker 1: It seemed like he kind of backed off the pace.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Josephat as well, josephat.
- 11:45Speaker 1: He beat the brakes off of Killian up until and he led Killian up until Hotel Weisshorn and then Killian was able to.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Josephat kind of fell off.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Killian was able to take the lead, um and I sit in again.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Phil Amon and Patrick are right there in the mix.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Phil Amon was a ways back.
- 12:03Speaker 1: He kind of moved up, um, and just started catching dudes and just an insane strategy, just absolutely incredible.
- 12:11Speaker 1: But let's talk about Killian two 225-34.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Guys, I think what we witnessed there might have been other than Zagama earlier in the year, which was an impressive showing, no doubt.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I mean just an absolutely stacked field.
- 12:28Speaker 1: But I think when you actually sit down and break down the ITRA scores or the UTMB, whatever these index, these indexes, this dumb shit, you can actually figure out that this might have been the most competitive mountain race of all time.
- 12:39Speaker 1: This could very well been it.
- 12:40Speaker 1: And if that's the case then I mean there's killian, is the goat, there's just no conversation around it.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Grace of all time, easily like just the range, the depth in the range.
- 12:51Speaker 1: And then to witness, to witness killian come back from the dead.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Okay, the dude, okay.
- 12:57Speaker 1: If that was anybody else, anybody else, I don't care who it was, you could have told me and I'm just painting a story for you here.
- 13:04Speaker 1: It could have been.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Anybody else Philemon would have done, would have put in, put in, the dagger in, and he would have been gone.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Okay, no, no telling.
- 13:12Speaker 1: You couldn't convince me, killian.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Like I said, he jumped down like seven switchbacks and put the move on Phil or on, yeah, on film on.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And, like I said, you got to go witness it for yourself.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Go back and watch the live stream.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I might go watch it again before my race this weekend just to get hyped, just because it was that exciting.
- 13:33Speaker 1: It was something we might not see again and I just think we need to appreciate just how special it is to have Killian in the sport and just how fast he is and just how he puts this, moves things forward.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Listen, if you're close with me and you're a friend of mine, you know I'm a skeptic.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I'm a skeptic of everything.
- 13:53Speaker 1: I always call Joe Gray the goat and I still think he's one of the greatest, of the greatest of all time.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Not going to lie.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I just think from a international perspective and I think from what we saw, just from a range perspective I mean you're talking about the pointy tip of the spear, from the sport here it's absolutely insane.
- 14:13Speaker 1: What we witnessed was pretty crazy and you just can't put any doubt on on killing, how he was able to do that.
- 14:20Speaker 1: I, I don't know.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Like I said, just resurrected from the dead in the 17th mile.
- 14:24Speaker 1: To come back and just beat the shit out of calif element was just something I, I don't know.
- 14:28Speaker 1: Um, and yeah, like I said, I think the the one through five just ran such an all of them ran incredible race, um, but just like to witness that as a, as a, as a fan of the sport, and to see what I witnessed, um, and to just follow along was just something so special and I think everybody needs to go back and check it out.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Um, yeah, that's all I got for you guys this week.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Um painted a beautiful story for you, hopefully, um, I couldn't have been more wrong.
- 14:54Speaker 1: In my free trail fantasy picks, half the people that I predicted weren't even in there and a lot of guys didn't show up.
- 15:00Speaker 1: That just is what it is.
- 15:03Speaker 1: It's what you know.
- 15:03Speaker 1: It's the game we play here.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Hope you guys enjoyed this one Nice rant sub stuff.
- 15:10Speaker 1: I think this is like episode 10.
- 15:11Speaker 1: I'm not really sure this is.
- 15:12Speaker 1: This is my ability to spit ball and kind of go off the.

- 16:00Speaker 1: Series and all.
- 16:00Speaker 1: What a bananas race.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Like I said, history in the making Witness what we just saw with Killian.
- 16:06Speaker 1: So crazy the goat.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Guys, enjoy your week.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I've got a really special episode coming out on Friday.
- 16:12Speaker 1: None other than ski mountaineering, olympian, hopeful and mountain runner, ray Coble, is going to be joining us on the pod for episode 24.
- 16:18Speaker 1: A really special episode, really special conversation with Ray Incredibly human and an even better athlete.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Well, I should swap that Incredible athlete, even better human.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Sorry, I'm all charged up guys.
- 16:30Speaker 1: I got really excited about this whole Killian situation.
