- 0:23Speaker 1: vocational training, upliftment and empowerment programs to women and children.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Sadvi is also Secretary General of the Global Interfaith Wash
- 0:32Speaker 1: Alliance and director of the world famous International Yoga Festival.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Joined the musics of an American Sanyasi as Sadvi shares
- 0:40Speaker 1: the wisdom and teachings of her Guru, His Holiness Pujiaswami
- 0:44Speaker 1: Chidnant Saraswatiji.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Welcome everyone to inspiration and transformation from the holy banks
- 0:58Speaker 2: of the Sacred gung A River in the land of Rishikesh, India.
- 1:05Speaker 3: How do we.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Embark and follow that path of discovering the truth of
- 1:15Speaker 2: who we are, of discovering the soul of self realization,
- 1:20Speaker 2: God realization, soul realization. You begin right here, right now.
- 1:28Speaker 2: You begin where every minute that you say to yourself,
- 1:33Speaker 2: I am and you fill in that blank with something
- 1:38Speaker 2: that has to do with your physical body, that has
- 1:42Speaker 2: to do with a role you play or an emotion
- 1:46Speaker 2: you're having. That every time you say that to yourself,
- 1:51Speaker 2: that you come back and you say, not this, not this.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:58Speaker 2: So, if you say, oh, I'm so angry or I'm
- 2:03Speaker 2: so frustrated, or I'm so happy, got an a on
- 2:08Speaker 2: the exam, had a great pizza dinner, I'm so happy,
- 2:14Speaker 2: say to yourself night eighty, not this, not this. I
- 2:21Speaker 2: am not the body that's happy from eating pizza. I
- 2:27Speaker 2: am not the ego that's happy from an exam score.
- 2:32Speaker 2: I'm not the ego that's angry at this or frustrated
- 2:36Speaker 2: by that. I'm not the chemicals or electricity in my
- 2:41Speaker 2: brain that gives me a pattern that we call anger
- 2:48Speaker 2: or sadness or happiness. Every time you say something like
- 2:56Speaker 2: I am successful or don't you know who I am?
- 3:00Speaker 2: I am or the opposite, I am worthless, I'm lazy,
- 3:07Speaker 2: I'll never achieve anything. Anytime you say anything like that,
- 3:12Speaker 2: any eye statement like that, just say eighty, not this,
- 3:20Speaker 2: not that. I am not my job, I am not
- 3:26Speaker 2: my role, my title, my bank account, my story, whether
- 3:33Speaker 2: I consider myself a big man or nobody. Either way,
- 3:37Speaker 2: I'm not that. It's just a story. It's a story
- 3:44Speaker 2: my egos, concocted based on information from the outside world,
- 3:52Speaker 2: based on experiences. But it's not who I am, because
- 3:57Speaker 2: I existed long before I decided I was a big man,
- 4:01Speaker 2: or long before I decided I was a nobody. I
- 4:05Speaker 2: existed long before I was angry or frustrated, long before
- 4:11Speaker 2: I had the pizza dinner that made me happy, long
- 4:15Speaker 2: before I was anything that you could fill in after.
- 4:19Speaker 3: I am.
- 4:22Speaker 2: So just whenever you find yourself saying I nathi eathi,
- 4:30Speaker 2: not this, not this, and slowly, slowly, slowly, that awareness
- 4:39Speaker 2: will bless them and do it as a meditation. It's
- 4:43Speaker 2: a beautiful meditation, and you just go through, one by one,
- 4:48Speaker 2: all of that which you are not, not the clothes
- 4:52Speaker 2: you're wearing, not the skin, not the blood, not the bones,
- 4:59Speaker 2: not the organ. Right, you do it very slowly, one
- 5:02Speaker 2: by one. I am not the clothes I'm wearing. I
- 5:08Speaker 2: am not the skin beneath the bones, and you go layer.
- 5:12Speaker 3: By layer.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Until and you stay with each one until the mind says, yeah,
- 5:19Speaker 2: like I know that, I get that, I know that
- 5:22Speaker 2: is true, not just I'm repeating it like a month AA.
- 5:26Speaker 2: But I actually know it is true. I know that
- 5:29Speaker 2: I am not my blood. I know that I am
- 5:31Speaker 2: not my organs, because see, I donated a kidney, but
- 5:35Speaker 2: I'm still here. I didn't cease to exist or I
- 5:38Speaker 2: got a kidney transplant, but I didn't become a different person.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I had my appendix removed, didn't lose myself. So I'm
- 5:49Speaker 2: not my organs. I'm not the bones, I'm not the blood.
- 5:54Speaker 2: And then you get into the the cells of the brain, right,
- 6:00Speaker 2: I am not my neurons. Obviously, I'm not gray matter.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I'm not white matter. I'm not the chemicals inside the
- 6:10Speaker 2: vesicles the end of each neuron. I'm not the electricity
- 6:18Speaker 2: that runs down the axon of the neuron causing the
- 6:23Speaker 2: vesicles of the chemicals to be released. It's not who
- 6:29Speaker 2: I am. I'm not chemistry. I'm not serotonin. I'm not
- 6:33Speaker 2: norepin effort. I'm not dope. I mean, these are just
- 6:35Speaker 2: chemicals in my brain. But if I'm not them, then
- 6:42Speaker 2: it means I'm not my thoughts. Means I'm not my emotions.
- 6:47Speaker 2: It means I'm not my memories. All of that which
- 6:51Speaker 2: takes place in the brain happens because of chemicals and electricity,
- 6:59Speaker 2: So not that. Then I'm also not my thoughts, not
- 7:05Speaker 2: my emotions, not my identification, not my personality. I'm nothing
- 7:15Speaker 2: that can be altered chemically or physically. So anytime you
- 7:20Speaker 2: think I am that, ask yourself, if I were really
- 7:25Speaker 2: drunk or I were on drugs, would I still that
- 7:31Speaker 2: things still be the same. And if the answer is no,
- 7:36Speaker 2: then it means, well, all you've done is altered your chemistry, right,
- 7:43Speaker 2: I mean, how many people under the influence of something
- 7:47Speaker 2: say that was not me.
- 7:48Speaker 3: I don't know who that was.
- 7:49Speaker 4: That was not.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Me, meaning.
- 7:54Speaker 2: That which I said, that which I did is not
- 7:59Speaker 2: the way I normally think of myself. But all you
- 8:03Speaker 2: did was change chemistry. So just as you were not
- 8:09Speaker 2: the new person who was under the influence, similarly you're
- 8:12Speaker 2: not the old person because that's also just chemistry. It's
- 8:17Speaker 2: just chemistry without the additional intoxicants anything that would change
- 8:25Speaker 2: if you changed the brain structurally, so you have a stroke,
- 8:30Speaker 2: a hemorrhage, a brain injury, a lesion, if that would
- 8:38Speaker 2: alter any aspect of who you think you are, your personality,
- 8:42Speaker 2: your identity, your emotions, your memories, well clearly that can't
- 8:48Speaker 2: be you because You're not your temporal lobes, right, You're
- 8:58Speaker 2: not your prefrontal cortex.
- 9:01Speaker 3: It's just a part of your brain. It's not who
- 9:05Speaker 3: you are.
- 9:07Speaker 2: So you do this practice called Nathi Nathi not this,
- 9:13Speaker 2: not this, and you go through anything that arises, anything
- 9:16Speaker 2: you can think of, anything that you think you might be,
- 9:24Speaker 2: and just allow that to percolate for a while in
- 9:27Speaker 2: your mind and ask yourself, really, is that really me?
- 9:30Speaker 2: Could that be altered chemically? Could that be altered physically?
- 9:38Speaker 2: And if so, then it's not me because I don't
- 9:43Speaker 2: cease to exist or change. The depth of who I
- 9:48Speaker 2: am doesn't change just because I'm drunk or I had
- 9:53Speaker 2: a stroke.
- 9:56Speaker 3: I don't change.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Just my brain change means that's not who I am.
- 10:05Speaker 2: And as soon as you clear all of that which
- 10:08Speaker 2: you are, not, what is left soul, divinity, that infinite consciousness.
- 10:25Speaker 2: That's all that's left. I am consciousness, I am soul.
- 10:35Speaker 2: It's the only thing that doesn't come and go or change.
- 10:41Speaker 2: But that awareness comes by removing all of the layers
- 10:45Speaker 2: of that which I.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Think I am.
- 10:49Speaker 2: And only then can you see what you really are.
- 10:52Speaker 2: If you want to see in a river or lake,
- 10:54Speaker 2: you have to remove the gunk from the surface. If
- 10:58Speaker 2: you want to see outside the window, you have to
- 11:00Speaker 2: clean it and open the curtains, And so we do
- 11:04Speaker 2: these practices to clean our eyesight.
- 11:11Speaker 3: So we can.

- 11:38Speaker 4: flagship radio show, What is going on? My passion is
- 11:42Speaker 4: sifting through information, research and innovations from new thought teachers,
- 11:47Speaker 4: speakers and researchers, pushing back the boundaries of what we
- 11:50Speaker 4: know about life, energy, metaphysics, and the universe. I love
- 11:55Speaker 4: shifting perceptions about who we are, why we're here, and
- 11:58Speaker 4: how quickly impossible become normal when we open our minds,
- 12:02Speaker 4: expand our awareness, and accept that the only limits that
- 12:05Speaker 4: exist are those we place upon ourselves. So, if you're
- 12:08Speaker 4: the kind of forward thinking, eager investigator of what lies
- 12:12Speaker 4: beyond the current reality that most perceive, why not make
- 12:15Speaker 4: a date to come play with me in the field

- 12:38Speaker 6: my shoes, Walk.
- 12:39Speaker 3: A mile in my shoes.
- 12:41Speaker 7: We've all felt left out, and for some that feeling
- 12:44Speaker 7: lasts more than a moment. We can change that. Learn
- 12:48Speaker 7: how it belonging begins with us dot org. Brought to
- 12:51Speaker 7: you by the AD Council.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Welcome Miles, Welcome back to INSPEC Operation and Transformation. I'm
- 13:04Speaker 2: so glad to have you all back here with me.
- 13:09Speaker 2: How do we attract a true and genuine circle of friends,
- 13:17Speaker 2: friends who are good for us? In the Hindu tradition,
- 13:22Speaker 2: in the Buddhist tradition as well, there's an emphasis on
- 13:26Speaker 2: what we call sunga that association. Sut sung is the
- 13:36Speaker 2: association of truth. We use it as just, you know,
- 13:42Speaker 2: the general word to describe coming together in meditation, in
- 13:48Speaker 2: prayer in this question answer experience, but sut sung is
- 13:54Speaker 2: literally the association with truth. Sung that association is critical.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Who you hang out with is critical to who you become.
- 14:11Speaker 2: And this is why that power of association is so
- 14:16Speaker 2: important and why we always emphasize make sure you surround
- 14:21Speaker 2: yourself with people who are what you want to become.
- 14:28Speaker 2: Make sure you surround yourself with those who are who
- 14:33Speaker 2: share your values, who share your ethics, who share your priorities.
- 14:38Speaker 2: If you are looking to drink alcohol less or party
- 14:47Speaker 2: less or gossip less, to hang out with people who
- 14:53Speaker 2: spend all day long sitting at bars, getting drunk and
- 14:57Speaker 2: gossiping is not going to be a wh his choice.
- 15:02Speaker 2: It's going to be a choice that's going to bring
- 15:04Speaker 2: you into unwanted patterns. You're going to look then for
- 15:09Speaker 2: people who are doing that which you want to do.
- 15:15Speaker 2: And so the way to find that, the way to
- 15:17Speaker 2: attract that is to become that. You know, I know
- 15:22Speaker 2: so many people, not so much now that I'm much
- 15:28Speaker 2: older and a nun living in India, but I remember
- 15:33Speaker 2: when I was much younger friends, when they were dating,
- 15:37Speaker 2: they would say things like, I don't know where to
- 15:41Speaker 2: meet the right man I want to be with. I
- 15:45Speaker 2: don't know where to meet the right girl I want
- 15:47Speaker 2: to be with. I keep going to the bars and
- 15:50Speaker 2: I just can't can't find him, can't find her.
- 15:55Speaker 3: And I always would laugh because.
- 15:59Speaker 2: No, what he wants to be with the type of
- 16:02Speaker 2: person who goes and just hangs out in the bars.
- 16:06Speaker 3: But where do you go to try to.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Meet the person that you're looking for? The bars the clubs.
- 16:14Speaker 3: And it was.
- 16:15Speaker 2: This great irony of people saying, I'm you know, every weekend,
- 16:21Speaker 2: I'm going to bars, I'm going to clubs, I'm going
- 16:25Speaker 2: to pubs looking for somebody. But all the people I
- 16:29Speaker 2: meet are people who don't really share my values in
- 16:32Speaker 2: my ethics. They're the type of people who hang out
- 16:36Speaker 2: in bars and clubs. And you think, well, if you
- 16:40Speaker 2: don't want to be with the type of person who
- 16:43Speaker 2: hangs out in bars and clubs, why are you going
- 16:46Speaker 2: to bars and clubs looking for them? You need to
- 16:50Speaker 2: ask yourself where are you going to meet those people
- 16:56Speaker 2: you want to be with, whether it's a life romantic partner, husband,
- 17:04Speaker 2: a wife, a boyfriend, a girlfriend, or whether it's just
- 17:08Speaker 2: a group of friends. If you meet them in a
- 17:10Speaker 2: place that's full of people doing things you don't like
- 17:15Speaker 2: to do, then you're not going to have a lot
- 17:18Speaker 2: in common with them.
- 17:20Speaker 3: And this is why it's so important. Go to the places.
- 17:29Speaker 2: That are of the values you have, the priorities you have.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Go to yoga classes, go to meditation, go to setson,
- 17:39Speaker 2: go to Kirthin, Go volunteering, Go feed the hungry, Go
- 17:46Speaker 2: spending saturdays planting trees, go helping others, help the homeless,
- 17:53Speaker 2: do something, so that the people you meet there are
- 17:59Speaker 2: going to be the type of people who go to Kirthin,
- 18:03Speaker 2: who go to yoga, who go to satsan, who go
- 18:06Speaker 2: to meditation, who volunteer to help others. Those are going
- 18:12Speaker 2: to be the people you want to hang out with.
- 18:16Speaker 2: So in order to meet them, you need to be
- 18:18Speaker 2: in those places, both in person and also online. The
- 18:25Speaker 2: online communities we're part of. Ask yourself, are these people
- 18:32Speaker 2: I really want to spend time with? Or am I
- 18:36Speaker 2: just swapped up by some online influencer, some this or
- 18:44Speaker 2: some that celebrity whatever, wasting all our time there? Instead
- 18:49Speaker 2: of that, join online communities of spiritual seekers, of meditators,
- 18:59Speaker 2: of devote pease, create a sunga. If one doesn't exist
- 19:06Speaker 2: that you want to be part of, create one. Put
- 19:09Speaker 2: a call out into the world.
- 19:11Speaker 1: We are.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Lovers of maganga.
- 19:16Speaker 2: Create a community It's the beautiful thing about the online world.
- 19:20Speaker 3: There are so many people.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Even if you don't have ten thousand members of your community,
- 19:27Speaker 2: it doesn't matter. Even if you've just got ten, well,
- 19:31Speaker 2: those are ten people then.
- 19:35Speaker 3: That you can connect with.
- 19:41Speaker 2: So create, create the community, or join it, look for it.
- 19:48Speaker 2: But don't rely only in online communities. We need in person, living, breathing,
- 19:56Speaker 2: energetic connections in our lives. Too many of us are
- 20:03Speaker 2: too lonely because we spend too much time online, and
- 20:07Speaker 2: we forget that those aren't actually real friends. They're just
- 20:14Speaker 2: people who are your friends online. Some of them may overlap,
- 20:18Speaker 2: but don't mistake friends online or followers online or likes
- 20:25Speaker 2: online from real friends, real people you really like, who
- 20:32Speaker 2: really like you, not who just clicked here to like something.
- 20:40Speaker 2: So you'll find them. The world is full of beautiful people.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Just take that first step. Reach out, open your heart,
- 20:49Speaker 2: put out that beautiful, energetic message to the world that
- 20:56Speaker 2: my heart is open.
- 20:59Speaker 3: And then.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Whoever you mean, do not mistay that divinity in me
- 21:07Speaker 2: bows to the divinity in you, and you'll magnetize a
- 21:14Speaker 2: group of people. And even if not a big group,
- 21:20Speaker 2: it doesn't matter. Don't we don't need fifty best friends.
- 21:26Speaker 2: You just need a few people two three, one with
- 21:33Speaker 2: whom you can really share, with whom you can really.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Open up.

- 23:06Speaker 6: am hunger in America dot org.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Brought to you by Feeding America and the AD Council.
- 23:11Speaker 3: Welcome back.
- 23:12Speaker 2: This is Sadvi Baghavati Saraswati with inspiration and transformation. How
- 23:22Speaker 2: can we apply the teaching of Nathi Nathi not this,
- 23:30Speaker 2: not this to our spiritual practice? So a beautiful meditation
- 23:43Speaker 2: is a meditation that we call Nathi Nathi meditation.
- 23:48Speaker 3: And it's a.
- 23:49Speaker 2: Very simple to do, but very deeply profound meditation. And
- 23:56Speaker 2: basically it looks like saying something like I am not
- 24:02Speaker 2: my sorry, I am not my skin, I am not
- 24:12Speaker 2: the blood flowing beneath my skin. I am not my muscles,
- 24:22Speaker 2: I am not my bones, and you go one by
- 24:26Speaker 2: one through all of the different aspects of the body,
- 24:32Speaker 2: from the most gross like the clothes and the skin
- 24:36Speaker 2: and limbs, to the most subtle, the chemical and electrical
- 24:42Speaker 2: patterns of energy in our brain that we call thoughts
- 24:48Speaker 2: or memories or emotions or beliefs. And with each thing
- 24:54Speaker 2: you say not this, I am not that, and you
- 24:59Speaker 2: only move on to the next thing when you get
- 25:02Speaker 2: kind of a full yeah, I know it inside you.
- 25:08Speaker 2: So if I say I'm not my clothes, the whole
- 25:12Speaker 2: body mind complex says yeah, yeah, of course, like I know,
- 25:16Speaker 2: I'm not my clothes. Change clothes every day, sometimes a
- 25:20Speaker 2: couple times a day. Obviously nothing is happening to the
- 25:24Speaker 2: self when I take off my clothes. Same thing as
- 25:31Speaker 2: you go through your skin and your blood and your
- 25:34Speaker 2: bones and your organs, and so there's a mental yes
- 25:42Speaker 2: yes with each thing. As it gets more subtle, it
- 25:47Speaker 2: sometimes takes a little bit longer to get the yes
- 25:53Speaker 2: from the internal being, but eventually it comes because we realize, well,
- 26:01Speaker 2: I'm not chemicals, I'm not serotonin, I'm not no epinephyrine,
- 26:07Speaker 2: I'm not dopamine, causing the chemical to be released and
- 26:12Speaker 2: then a chain reaction into the nextner, I'm not electricity.
- 26:18Speaker 2: It went out, it came back here, we still are
- 26:21Speaker 2: no change. I'm not chemicals. And so if I realize
- 26:27Speaker 2: that I'm not chemicals or electricity, then obviously I'm not
- 26:33Speaker 2: my thoughts, my emotions, my beliefs. That's the meditation. But
- 26:43Speaker 2: the question says, how do we bring nathan athy into
- 26:48Speaker 2: our spiritual practice? So not just the meditation, but in
- 26:53Speaker 2: our lives. And it's a really it's a really powerful thing.
- 26:58Speaker 2: You know, all of that which we do in our meditation,
- 27:05Speaker 2: the whole point of it is to change how we live.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Everything you experience in meditation is meant to be lived.
- 27:13Speaker 2: It's not oh, this is my meditative experience and everything
- 27:18Speaker 2: is one and I'm one with God. And then I
- 27:22Speaker 2: stand up from my meditation and I hate you, and
- 27:25Speaker 2: I hate you and you bother me and you make
- 27:28Speaker 2: me angry and you're the problem. Right then it means
- 27:33Speaker 2: obviously your meditation is not very deep, not very profound.
- 27:41Speaker 2: So everything we experience in meditation we are supposed to
- 27:47Speaker 2: take with us when we stand up. But this particular
- 27:51Speaker 2: practice is really powerful to bring into your lives, because
- 27:56Speaker 2: you'll notice, if you become aware, mindful, that as you
- 28:03Speaker 2: move through your day, you have different reactions, different feelings frustration, anger, resentment, competition, jealousy, regret, guilt, greed,
- 28:30Speaker 2: lost right. I mean, we could do that all night,
- 28:32Speaker 2: like this is what our days, in our minds look like.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Every time one of those arises, you get to look
- 28:43Speaker 2: at it and say, Nati, EIGHTI not this.
- 28:50Speaker 3: There may be a pattern.
- 28:55Speaker 2: In the brain that we call anger, but we've already
- 29:00Speaker 2: determined I am not the chemistry and electricity in my brain,
- 29:03Speaker 2: so I am not my anger. There may be a
- 29:07Speaker 2: chemical reaction in the body of hormones that we call lust,
- 29:14Speaker 2: but I am not chemicals. We've already discovered that, whether
- 29:18Speaker 2: they're in my brain, whether they're in my blood stream,
- 29:23Speaker 2: whether they're pouring out of my adrenal gluns, I'm not chemicals,
- 29:29Speaker 2: which means I'm not the lust, the stress, the anger.
- 29:38Speaker 2: As things arise in your life, you get to look
- 29:41Speaker 2: at them the same way that I look at the sorry,
- 29:44Speaker 2: or that you look at your skin or your bones
- 29:47Speaker 2: or your muscles, and you say, I am not this,
- 29:51Speaker 2: Nati Nathi. So the moment that you notice frustration arise,
- 30:00Speaker 2: anger arising, stress arising, jealousy arising, lust arising. Just look
- 30:08Speaker 2: at it and say, Nathan Eathane, not this, not this.
- 30:16Speaker 2: I am not my jealousy anymore than I am my clothes.
- 30:21Speaker 2: I am not my resentment anymore than I am my kidneys.
- 30:29Speaker 2: I am not my anger anymore than I am my
- 30:33Speaker 2: teeth or the chemistry and my brain. These are all
- 30:39Speaker 2: aspects of the physical body. So as it arises in
- 30:45Speaker 2: the day, just look at it, Nathi, Nathi, not this,
- 30:51Speaker 2: not this, And it's a beautiful meditation in action to
- 30:57Speaker 2: just bring you back.
- 31:01Speaker 3: This. This is who I am.
- 31:06Speaker 2: So that's how we bring it into our day. Do
- 31:12Speaker 2: it as a meditation, but then live it.
- 31:17Speaker 3: In your day.

- 32:49Speaker 9: dot org.
- 32:51Speaker 1: I'm brought to you by RAIN and this station.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Welcome back.
- 32:55Speaker 2: This is sadv Bagoviti Saraswati with Inspiration and Transformation, the
- 33:04Speaker 2: Journey from lust to celibacy, for tapping our mind power. So,
- 33:12Speaker 2: first of all, you said something very important that I
- 33:16Speaker 2: want to make sure everyone heard. He began by saying
- 33:23Speaker 2: he's a Guinness Book World record holder for memorizing the
- 33:28Speaker 2: entire Oxford Dictionary, including the page numbers, and that he
- 33:35Speaker 2: practices celibacy because without that he doesn't have the inner energy,
- 33:41Speaker 2: the inner mind power to do this, and that now
- 33:45Speaker 2: he's training others to be able to do that. So
- 33:51Speaker 2: this is a lot of what our reshis and sages
- 33:56Speaker 2: have said for thousands of years, which is that our
- 33:58Speaker 2: internal ogency, that internal energy of the system, not just
- 34:06Speaker 2: the physical body, but the energetic body. Every time we
- 34:14Speaker 2: engage in secs, we're not just losing physical fluids of
- 34:22Speaker 2: the body. We're actually also losing ojis, and so it
- 34:28Speaker 2: weakens immune systems, but it also weakens mental power. Now
- 34:35Speaker 2: there's a couple of pieces about this though. First of all,
- 34:40Speaker 2: less doesn't exist only in our genitals, So it's not
- 34:46Speaker 2: if I can just keep my genitals under control, then
- 34:50Speaker 2: I'm going to be okay. It actually exists in the
- 34:53Speaker 2: mind as well. I may be physically celibate, I may
- 34:59Speaker 2: not be an engaging in any sexual activity at all.
- 35:03Speaker 3: But if my mind.
- 35:07Speaker 2: Is constantly thinking, oh my god, I can't believe this,
- 35:10Speaker 2: this is ridiculous.
- 35:11Speaker 3: I want to have sex so badly.
- 35:13Speaker 2: Oh my god, I bet I bet that person would
- 35:15Speaker 2: be really great to have sex with Oh God, I wonder,
- 35:18Speaker 2: I wonder what it would be like with that person.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Oh those people, I think they just went in to
- 35:23Speaker 2: have sex. Now, if we are constantly thinking about it,
- 35:30Speaker 2: we're actually worse off than if we're doing it, because
- 35:38Speaker 2: it's occupying all of our minds. So our mind power,
- 35:42Speaker 2: of course is completely gone. And the mind uses ojus
- 35:48Speaker 2: as well. And so whether we are memorizing a dictionary
- 35:55Speaker 2: or thinking about sex, they're both utilizing oh jes. So
- 36:02Speaker 2: just keeping the body under control is not actually enough.
- 36:07Speaker 2: And this is why in our Indian tradition we speak
- 36:12Speaker 2: about different phases of life, because it's really clear that
- 36:18Speaker 2: not everyone, at every phase of their life is meant
- 36:23Speaker 2: to be celibate. It's wonderful that you are, congratulations. Many
- 36:30Speaker 2: of us take vows of celibacy at young ages, take
- 36:38Speaker 2: snias at young ages. I was only twenty nine when
- 36:41Speaker 2: I took senias. But for a lot of people, that
- 36:49Speaker 2: phase of life comes after the householder phase that we
- 36:55Speaker 2: first go through a whole phase of life called the
- 36:58Speaker 2: gras daschrom phase in which we are a householder and
- 37:03Speaker 2: we have sexual relations, you know, dharmic, monogamous, healthy sexual
- 37:12Speaker 2: relations with our spouse, we end up with children, and
- 37:19Speaker 2: after that we start going into van fastasmphase and signya
- 37:26Speaker 2: so I mention that because you should not feel like
- 37:29Speaker 2: somehow every one of you, at every phase of your
- 37:33Speaker 2: life needs to be celibrator. You won't have your brain functioning.
- 37:40Speaker 2: If you are not.
- 37:43Speaker 3: Ready to be.
- 37:44Speaker 2: Celibate and the mind is not able to come under control,
- 37:52Speaker 2: then you're actually worse off than if you simply engage
- 37:58Speaker 2: in dharmic monogue. Miss sexual relationships with your spouse, because
- 38:04Speaker 2: typically in most relationships, you're not having sex thirty times
- 38:11Speaker 2: a day, every day, three hundred and sixty five days
- 38:14Speaker 2: a year, right, But when you're not having sex and
- 38:21Speaker 2: you're thinking about it, thinking about it thirty plus times
- 38:25Speaker 2: a day, seven days a week, three hundred and sixty
- 38:28Speaker 2: five days a year, and all of that energy that
- 38:32Speaker 2: is being wasted in the mind thinking about it is
- 38:36Speaker 2: more harmful than an occasional dharmic coming together of a
- 38:46Speaker 2: husband and wife or whatever the two people may be.
- 38:54Speaker 3: In love in union.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Dedicating that to the divine, It's why we have the
- 39:01Speaker 2: Kamma Sutra because it teaches us how to take that
- 39:05Speaker 2: which is very natural in married relations and also make
- 39:12Speaker 2: it spiritual how to offer that to the divine in
- 39:17Speaker 2: a way that isn't depleting us but is actually enhancing us.
- 39:24Speaker 2: So I think the path is fantastic. I think it's
- 39:31Speaker 2: definitely the right path for some people. It's the right
- 39:36Speaker 2: path for more people as you get older. But along
- 39:43Speaker 2: the way, conserving your ogis is very important. And by
- 39:52Speaker 2: the way, not only sex. Sex is not the only
- 39:54Speaker 2: thing that depletes it. Either doing it or thinking about it.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Anger depletes it. Unnecessary talk depletes it. Gossip, negativity, lots
- 40:08Speaker 2: and lots of things deplete our ogious. You ever find
- 40:13Speaker 2: yourself in a conversation with someone where you haven't even
- 40:19Speaker 2: stood up, You're just sitting down chatting. But suddenly you
- 40:22Speaker 2: find yourself like, oh my god, I'm so drained from
- 40:26Speaker 2: this conversation, and all you've done has been gossiping or
- 40:33Speaker 2: talking negatively about other people. That drains our ogious, all
- 40:44Speaker 2: of the vastness.
- 40:48Speaker 3: They drain ogous.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Desires drain O just sitting here all day long, whether
- 40:52Speaker 2: it's sex I'm desiring, or more money, or the office
- 40:57Speaker 2: of the person next to me, Why does that person
- 40:59Speaker 2: have the office. That's not fair. I want that office.
- 41:02Speaker 2: I should have that office. We're depleting, depleting our ogis
- 41:08Speaker 2: with every one of those thoughts, I'm too good for
- 41:15Speaker 2: this little cubicle. Why does that person get the big office.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Don't they know I'm the one who does all the
- 41:20Speaker 2: work around here. You're depleting your ogis. So it's beautiful
- 41:29Speaker 2: what you're doing, and it's a beautiful message to people
- 41:34Speaker 2: of protect your ogis and celibacy is certainly a very
- 41:40Speaker 2: very powerful way to do it, but it's important just
- 41:46Speaker 2: to remember that it's not necessarily the right path for
- 41:50Speaker 2: all people at all times, and with people for whom
- 41:56Speaker 2: it's not the right path at that time, to help
- 41:59Speaker 2: them work with their path so that they can conserve
- 42:04Speaker 2: as much of that energy.
- 42:08Speaker 3: In thought, inward in action as possible.
- 42:15Speaker 2: So yeah, thank you so much for bringing up that
- 42:19Speaker 2: beautiful topic, and congratulations.

- 43:56Speaker 2: Welcome back. This is sadv Bagovity whereat the with inspiration
- 44:03Speaker 2: and Transformation. Does denying the needs of the body and
- 44:11Speaker 2: suppressing emotions create mental problems. If yes, should seekers renounce. So,
- 44:25Speaker 2: first of all, renunciation is not the answer to needs
- 44:33Speaker 2: of the body or emotional issues. That becomes just repression
- 44:40Speaker 2: or denial. That's just denial and saffron clothes. That's not
- 44:46Speaker 2: what renunciation is about. It's not Oh, I've got these
- 44:51Speaker 2: needs or I have these emotions and I don't want
- 44:54Speaker 2: to deal with them. They are four I'm going to
- 44:58Speaker 2: put on saffron clothes and pretend that I don't have them.
- 45:05Speaker 3: Doesn't work.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Has anybody who's ever tried to change their clothes into
- 45:11Speaker 2: anything those what you wear, it doesn't change.
- 45:19Speaker 3: What's going on.
- 45:22Speaker 2: In your mind or in the chemicals of your body.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Reminds us, reminds us of a path we're walking. But
- 45:32Speaker 2: if you're angry in jeans and a T shirt, you're
- 45:35Speaker 2: going to be angry.
- 45:36Speaker 3: In saffron clothes.
- 45:39Speaker 2: If you are lustful and greedy in jeans and a
- 45:43Speaker 2: T shirt, you're going to be lustful and greedy in
- 45:48Speaker 2: saffron robes. You're just going to be more repressed about it,
- 45:52Speaker 2: or you're going to try to hide it more. So
- 45:54Speaker 2: that doesn't actually serve anyone.
- 45:57Speaker 3: So, first of.
- 45:58Speaker 2: All, denying the needs of the body. Does it cause
- 46:04Speaker 2: mental problems? Well, first of all, it causes physical problems.
- 46:10Speaker 2: The body has needs food, water, sleep, oxygen. Those are
- 46:21Speaker 2: kind of the most basic, and yet in spiritual work
- 46:26Speaker 2: we do for short times deny those needs.
- 46:32Speaker 3: For a short time, not.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Long enough to harm the body, but long enough actually
- 46:38Speaker 2: to strengthen the mind, to teach us. Ah, the body
- 46:45Speaker 2: is clamoring for food, but I'm fasting today, I'm not
- 46:52Speaker 2: responding to that. And yet here I am. The sky
- 46:58Speaker 2: hasn't fallen, I haven't exploded or impluded. The world hasn't
- 47:03Speaker 2: ceased to exist. And it's a very powerful lesson because
- 47:10Speaker 2: it teaches us that we are not simply responses to stimuli.
- 47:16Speaker 2: We're not like Pavlov's dogs that salivated a bell.
- 47:20Speaker 3: And well we don't have a choice.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Yeah, Sometimes the body sends a signal it wants food,
- 47:27Speaker 2: it wants water, it wants sleep, it wants sex, it
- 47:30Speaker 2: wants this, and we act like, oh my god, I
- 47:34Speaker 2: had no choice. What fasting does in a healthy way?
- 47:44Speaker 2: What staying awake all night? Every once in a while
- 47:48Speaker 2: we do it sometimes on Shivratti for example, or Krishna
- 47:52Speaker 2: genmarsh to me, or certain full moons. There are just
- 47:57Speaker 2: very auspicious nights sometimes during the year to stay awake
- 48:01Speaker 2: and meditate all night, and they're just very powerful times,
- 48:07Speaker 2: not just to be awake in the night, but to
- 48:10Speaker 2: teach the mind that just because the body is saying
- 48:15Speaker 2: sleep doesn't mean I have to be a robot responding
- 48:22Speaker 2: to it. Body can say sleep and I say not tonight.
- 48:29Speaker 2: Not that sleep is bad, not that I'm not going
- 48:31Speaker 2: to sleep again, not that we shouldn't get a good
- 48:33Speaker 2: night sleep.
- 48:34Speaker 3: We should.
- 48:36Speaker 2: And it's a very powerful way of training the mind
- 48:42Speaker 2: to every once in a while engage in these practices,
- 48:46Speaker 2: whether it's a short term fast, whether it's staying awake
- 48:51Speaker 2: all night, meditating, whatever it may be, but something in
- 48:56Speaker 2: which you know you're going to go back to it.
- 48:58Speaker 2: I am going to eat again, and I am going
- 49:00Speaker 2: to sleep again. But simply to train the mind. I'm
- 49:06Speaker 2: not just a reactionary mechanism. There's some chemical reaction in
- 49:12Speaker 2: the body and I jump to attention. The mind says eat,
- 49:16Speaker 2: I eat. The mind says do this, I do it.
- 49:20Speaker 2: So it trains the mind. Now, if you don't give
- 49:25Speaker 2: in to the body's needs, ever, if you literally starve yourself,
- 49:30Speaker 2: you will suffer. If you stop sleeping, you will suffer.
- 49:37Speaker 2: There's lots of literature about I think it's two nights
- 49:41Speaker 2: of sleep. I can't remember exactly the statistics, but something
- 49:44Speaker 2: like going twenty four hours without sleep is something like
- 49:50Speaker 2: the equivalent of drinking three glasses of alcohol.
- 49:54Speaker 3: You're drunk.
- 49:56Speaker 2: The mind and the brain and the body is that
- 49:59Speaker 2: badly in haired So to not sleep, to not eat,
- 50:05Speaker 2: to not drink harms the body before it even harms
- 50:11Speaker 2: the emotions. But in short term, controlled bursts, it's actually
- 50:19Speaker 2: very very powerful as a as a practice, a spiritual practice,
- 50:25Speaker 2: to remind us that we are not just slaves. In
- 50:31Speaker 2: terms of suppression of emotion. Yeah, you get, you get
- 50:39Speaker 2: mental problems. I mean that you get, you become unhealthy.
- 50:43Speaker 2: Mental health cannot be achieved through suppression. To simply say
- 50:49Speaker 2: I'm not angry, right, somebody says to us, what's wrong?
- 50:54Speaker 3: You say nothing? What is that actually achieved?
- 50:59Speaker 4: Right?
- 51:00Speaker 2: We know we're angry. They obviously know we're angry. It's
- 51:05Speaker 2: achieved nothing. But to draw a wedge further between us
- 51:10Speaker 2: and that person who asked, and to deny it to
- 51:16Speaker 2: ourselves is just as detrimental. You can't simply decide you
- 51:22Speaker 2: are not angry. You have to actually work with anger.
- 51:26Speaker 2: You have to make decisions that whatever it is that
- 51:29Speaker 2: causes anger, my expectations, my grudges, that I'm actually going
- 51:36Speaker 2: to work with those and let them go so that
- 51:38Speaker 2: anger doesn't arise, not just that I'm going to take
- 51:42Speaker 2: it and suppress it. So whenever emotions are there, what
- 51:50Speaker 2: I always say is allow them, but don't hook the
- 51:56Speaker 2: awareness into it. So it arises like a wave on
- 52:00Speaker 2: the beach. It comes, and it peaks, and it dissipates
- 52:08Speaker 2: and goes. We get stuck in emotions when we hook
- 52:12Speaker 2: ourselves into it, when we start telling ourselves a story
- 52:16Speaker 2: about it. So if I notice anger is arising, just
- 52:20Speaker 2: the pure energy of anger, I'm not going to suppress it.
- 52:26Speaker 2: I'm not going to deny it. I'm not going to
- 52:28Speaker 2: repress it. But I'm also not going to get engaged
- 52:31Speaker 2: in a whole drama around it. I'm not going to
- 52:35Speaker 2: let the mind get into its whole story of why
- 52:39Speaker 2: I'm angry and how dare that person? And I'm so
- 52:42Speaker 2: nice to them and I do everything and then they
- 52:44Speaker 2: treat me like junk and it's not fair and who
- 52:47Speaker 2: do they think they are, and that's not healthy. All
- 52:53Speaker 2: that does is it just keeps creating more and more anger.
- 52:58Speaker 2: It just keeps intensifying, it intensifying it. It's not actually
- 53:04Speaker 2: helping you heal from it. It's just building it up
- 53:07Speaker 2: more and more and more. So when emotions arise, we
- 53:10Speaker 2: just notice them. Ah anger, okay, and then you just
- 53:18Speaker 2: allow it. It's just an energy. Just like any energy.
- 53:23Speaker 2: You close your eyes and you allow it to come
- 53:26Speaker 2: into the body and you just stay anchored in the
- 53:31Speaker 2: breath and it'll do its thing. It'll literally rise in
- 53:35Speaker 2: the body. You'll feel the breath get a little shorter,
- 53:38Speaker 2: You'll feel it heartbeats start to increase a little. You
- 53:43Speaker 2: may find yourself a little flushed, but you just keep
- 53:46Speaker 2: drying the awareness to the breath, not to stop the anchor,
- 53:53Speaker 2: but just to stay grounded in the midst of it.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Literally like you would if there were a big wave
- 53:59Speaker 2: in the ocean. You just stay anchered and grounded, and
- 54:03Speaker 2: it just comes and it rises and it peaques, and
- 54:09Speaker 2: you're still sitting, you're still breathing, and then it dissipates
- 54:16Speaker 2: and again, like a wave, it just goes back out
- 54:18Speaker 2: to see. So that's the way to deal with emotions.
- 54:23Speaker 2: Don't repress them or deny them. You'll give yourself not
- 54:27Speaker 2: only mental health issues, but physical health issues, because guess what,
- 54:33Speaker 2: the mind and the body are not separate. What we think,
- 54:38Speaker 2: how we feel is directly linked to not only our
- 54:45Speaker 2: mental health but our physical health. So we allow it,
- 54:51Speaker 2: we accept it. We see it, not suppressing, not denying.
- 54:57Speaker 2: You can't renounce anger. When we talk about renunciation, it's
- 55:04Speaker 2: a renunciation of different types of attachments. It's a renunciation
- 55:10Speaker 2: of different worldviews. It's a renunciation of different activities. But
- 55:16Speaker 2: it's not a renunciation of emotion.
- 55:19Speaker 3: You can't do that.
- 55:22Speaker 2: The only way for them to dissipate is for you
- 55:24Speaker 2: to notice them, be aware, allow, and then automatically they
- 55:32Speaker 2: weigh on their own. If you can just unhook the
- 55:37Speaker 2: mind that wants to keep repeating it over and over
- 55:43Speaker 2: and over again. From it, this brings to a close
- 55:49Speaker 2: this hour of inspiration and transformation. Thank you so much
- 55:56Speaker 2: for joining me. I'm so glad to be together. They're
- 56:00Speaker 2: with you all each week, and I look forward to
- 56:03Speaker 2: being together again next Thursday, same time on od Times Radio.
- 57:00Speaker 1: Would be the contact the count deep, the county very
