- 1:32Speaker 6: And we're coming to you live via digital recording from
- 1:34Speaker 6: the Dreamland Film Center. And I think it's pretty fabulous.
- 1:38Speaker 7: How about you guys? Yes, it's wonderful.
- 1:41Speaker 6: We're testing things out. Hopefully, we're trying to find ourselves
- 1:45Speaker 6: a new functional home base.
- 1:47Speaker 7: So I like this, and I.
- 1:49Speaker 6: Like what they're trying to do here. So yeah, I
- 1:51Speaker 6: think we're going to try to work with them on
- 1:53Speaker 6: some upcoming projects and do our own weird stuff here
- 1:57Speaker 6: as much.
- 1:57Speaker 7: As we can.
- 1:58Speaker 6: This time, before just rolling into the geek activities, I
- 2:02Speaker 6: think this takes its place. we, it's not a geek
- 2:05Speaker 6: activity because we lost a major geek. And I thought
- 2:09Speaker 6: we'll probably come back to our list of dead people
- 2:11Speaker 6: next year. Like we did this time, but this one
- 2:13Speaker 6: was a big deal. And I thought we should talk
- 2:15Speaker 6: about Roger Ebert. I, for no other reason for me,
- 2:20Speaker 6: then I don't know that this show would exist without it.
- 2:24Speaker 6: Like to me, that was probably the first time in
- 2:27Speaker 6: my memory that I remember seeing people really have a
- 2:31Speaker 6: discussion about movies. And I, You know, I mean, there
- 2:34Speaker 6: have been critics and they always kind of did their
- 2:36Speaker 6: solo thing. And even there wasn't even a ton of
- 2:39Speaker 6: them on TV at that point. It was still mostly written.
- 2:41Speaker 6: But that to me and maybe somebody wants to nitpick
- 2:45Speaker 6: and find something. I don't care. In my mind, that
- 2:47Speaker 6: was the first time I remember seeing people sit down
- 2:50Speaker 6: and discuss and argue and like just go at it
- 2:53Speaker 6: and really invest time. so much of their life into movies.
- 2:56Speaker 6: And that, again, that planted the seed for something that
- 2:59Speaker 6: would surface years later. And I, for that reason, I'm
- 3:03Speaker 6: sort of thankful to the both of them.
- 3:05Speaker 8: Well, that and me growing up, just growing up out
- 3:08Speaker 8: in the sticks, you know, I didn't really have access
- 3:12Speaker 8: to many of these theaters.
- 3:13Speaker 9: And once I got old enough where I could start
- 3:15Speaker 9: driving and.
- 3:17Speaker 8: I started finding just different art styles, locations that I
- 3:20Speaker 8: could see these films that they talked about that was
- 3:22Speaker 8: like my source to find out what film should I
- 3:24Speaker 8: be seeing that we're currently out because I started to
- 3:26Speaker 8: become a movie geek when I was in high school
- 3:28Speaker 8: I've been one for a long time but like really
- 3:31Speaker 8: wanting to branch out and that was my source material
- 3:34Speaker 8: on where to branch out is growing up and watching
- 3:37Speaker 8: them once a week and it almost sort of developed
- 3:41Speaker 8: like this checklist as to what do I need to
- 3:43Speaker 8: see and or what do I need to avoid so
- 3:46Speaker 8: I mean granted you know we've talked about this before
- 3:49Speaker 8: And I was having recommendations when I was going to
- 3:51Speaker 8: Suncoast all the time as.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Well as school teachers. But that was like, not to.
- 3:56Speaker 8: Diss the Suncoast people, but like the overarching professional recommendation as.
- 4:02Speaker 4: To what I needed to see.
- 4:04Speaker 8: I mean, I'm still thankful that you recommended the car
- 4:07Speaker 8: to me.
- 4:07Speaker 4: And I bought that.
- 4:11Speaker 6: Well, that's another thing that's kind of interesting is that they,
- 4:15Speaker 6: for being on, you know, what was a big TV
- 4:18Speaker 6: show at the time, they still managed to put a
- 4:21Speaker 6: lot of time into little indie movies. They would do
- 4:24Speaker 6: one or two of the big ones that came out
- 4:26Speaker 6: that weekend, but they would devote equally as much time
- 4:29Speaker 6: to movies that I bet a good portion of the
- 4:31Speaker 6: cities that show was playing in, it never even played.
- 4:33Speaker 6: It wouldn't play, and they still gave attention to little
- 4:36Speaker 6: indie movies. So that's, for that time, almost unheard of, really.
- 4:41Speaker 9: That no one can also not acknowledge the fact that
- 4:45Speaker 9: Beyond the.
- 4:45Speaker 4: Valley of the Dolls. I love that movie.
- 4:48Speaker 8: Is there a show in the past that has actually
- 4:51Speaker 8: done Beyond the Valley of the Dolls?
- 4:52Speaker 6: On our show?
- 4:53Speaker 10: No.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I didn't think there had been.
- 4:55Speaker 6: We definitely need to work it in.
- 4:57Speaker 8: Another recommendation. That's on my top ten and has been
- 4:59Speaker 8: for years. Just because it is so much fun. It's
- 5:03Speaker 8: just so much fun from beginning to end. And I
- 5:05Speaker 8: can just imagine Russ Meyer and Roger Ebert just in
- 5:09Speaker 8: the room cackling with laughter as they're coming.
- 5:12Speaker 4: Up with the script for it.
- 5:14Speaker 11: So....
- 5:16Speaker 8: If anything, whenever you watch it, it's a shame that
- 5:19Speaker 8: he didn't write more screenplays.
- 5:20Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 5:21Speaker 9: I think he did post on his blog. I guess
- 5:26Speaker 9: it was about six months ago.
- 5:27Speaker 4: I remember seeing it.
- 5:29Speaker 8: He posted his other screenplay that he wrote at the
- 5:31Speaker 8: time and it was never made. It's like Who Killed
- 5:35Speaker 8: Bambi or something.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a Sex Pistols movie. We were supposed
- 5:38Speaker 1: to be in Sex Pistols in a film directed by Rod.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Is that the name of it?
- 5:43Speaker 1: Russ Meyers. Yeah, who killed Bambi. That was the working title.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I don't know if they were planning on changing that
- 5:48Speaker 1: or not.
- 5:48Speaker 11: I had no idea that was written by him.
- 5:50Speaker 1: That's really interesting.
- 5:52Speaker 6: He's a hell of an interesting guy, I have to say.
- 5:55Speaker 6: As the years went on, just more and more aspects
- 5:58Speaker 6: of him that you're just like, man, I don't know.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Especially when his personality went online. The way I grew up,
- 6:05Speaker 4: I saw bits and pieces. I grew up in the 90s,
- 6:07Speaker 4: so by the time I did see.
- 6:12Speaker 4: At the movies, it was kind of the period where
- 6:14Speaker 4: Gene Siskel was close to the end. He was not
- 6:18Speaker 4: going to be on the show for very much longer.
- 6:20Speaker 4: I knew who Siskel and Ebert were. They were still
- 6:23Speaker 4: part of the pop culture. I enjoyed watching when I
- 6:28Speaker 4: saw the show, but it wasn't really until when I
- 6:30Speaker 4: got to high school where I started going to RogerEbert.com
- 6:33Speaker 4: and reading the reviews for whatever was coming out that week.
- 6:36Speaker 4: A couple years later, he started doing his journal and
- 6:38Speaker 4: his blog. And then I started watching all these archived
- 6:41Speaker 4: YouTube clips of all the older episodes that I hadn't
- 6:43Speaker 4: seen on TV. And at the same time watching Richard
- 6:46Speaker 4: Roper and, you know, all the new hosts. And you
- 6:49Speaker 4: kind of got like, the way I was introduced to him,
- 6:51Speaker 4: it was kind of like this explosion because the internet
- 6:53Speaker 4: added this whole other side to him. Because, I mean,
- 6:56Speaker 4: I knew he was on TV, but like I always
- 6:58Speaker 4: thought of him growing up before that, that he was
- 7:00Speaker 4: just this TV personality. He was this popular critic. I
- 7:03Speaker 4: didn't know like his writing was this good or he
- 7:05Speaker 4: had such insight into movies and how much he really
- 7:08Speaker 4: loved movies until like, went to his website and just
- 7:11Speaker 4: like kind of got that side of it.
- 7:12Speaker 8: Especially after he lost almost all of his jaw to cancer.
- 7:15Speaker 8: That's where he found like.
- 7:16Speaker 4: His new voice. Yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 8: I mean, like going on and reviewing films and sharing
- 7:20Speaker 8: that with people.
- 7:21Speaker 6: That's the thing that's amazing for him is like, I mean,
- 7:24Speaker 6: he'd been a writer, but he'd been a newspaper man,
- 7:27Speaker 6: like back when it was really a newspaper job. And
- 7:30Speaker 6: the fact that he so late in his life, just, just,
- 7:35Speaker 6: effortlessly shifted to the internet and with that I mean
- 7:38Speaker 6: how many other 70 year olds are still running a
- 7:40Speaker 6: blog every day and tweeting and I mean he was
- 7:42Speaker 6: he was like had more of an online presence than
- 7:45Speaker 6: most people you know that are a fraction.
- 7:47Speaker 8: Of his age because he wasn't limited by when he
- 7:50Speaker 8: could either be published or be on television it's like
- 7:52Speaker 8: he can type up anything whenever he wants.
- 7:55Speaker 5: And he was brilliant not just in film but in
- 7:58Speaker 5: a lot of things he was and he just had
- 8:01Speaker 5: talent pouring out of his brain I think most of
- 8:03Speaker 5: the time And he had an opinion about everything, which was,
- 8:08Speaker 5: but I, it's funny, Ben, you were talking about how
- 8:12Speaker 5: the internet, and I pictured you said, well, until then,
- 8:15Speaker 5: he was just maybe a TV personality that, you know,
- 8:18Speaker 5: talked about film or something like that. And you didn't really,
- 8:20Speaker 5: and I was like, oh, so you mean like Gene Shalit?
- 8:25Speaker 13: Not quite that bad i mean i knew he was
- 8:27Speaker 13: the critic i knew i knew there was something i
- 8:30Speaker 13: knew there was something i knew he was a cut
- 8:32Speaker 13: above the rest like he was like you know the
- 8:33Speaker 13: the go-to critic but i really didn't have that kind
- 8:36Speaker 13: of you know second.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Like like oh wow this guy really is amazing until
- 8:42Speaker 4: like i i just knew like i saw his writing
- 8:44Speaker 4: and But yeah, he wasn't quite... He's a mustache guy.
- 8:48Speaker 14: I know, yeah.
- 8:49Speaker 4: I know that.
- 8:49Speaker 9: I think he still does stuff once a week, maybe.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I think so.
- 8:53Speaker 4: The Today Show?
- 8:54Speaker 1: I think he's on the Today Show.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I think so.
- 8:56Speaker 5: I just noticed at the last time I ever saw him,
- 9:00Speaker 5: I've known forever, if he recommended it, I wasn't going
- 9:03Speaker 5: to see it because almost every time.
- 9:05Speaker 9: Well, that sounds nervous.
- 9:06Speaker 8: But still, you find that critic to where you really
- 9:09Speaker 8: like your personality and movie taste sync up with them.
- 9:12Speaker 9: And for me, it was either.
- 9:15Speaker 9: Ebert or Peter Travers.
- 9:16Speaker 4: One of the two.
- 9:17Speaker 11: Those are always the two that I disagree with.
- 9:22Speaker 6: Imagine that.
- 9:24Speaker 11: You know, when you hear that somebody's passed away, you
- 9:30Speaker 11: have an image of them that pops in your head
- 9:31Speaker 11: and it's usually a very affectionate image. And, um, I
- 9:34Speaker 11: used to work in film publicity in Atlanta and part
- 9:36Speaker 11: of what we would do would be setting up, um,
- 9:38Speaker 11: press screenings and our, uh, The folks we did in
- 9:42Speaker 11: the Southeast and then the folks, our counterparts in the
- 9:44Speaker 11: Midwest office were obviously in Chicago. And this may or
- 9:47Speaker 11: may not be true. I'm choosing to believe it's true.
- 9:49Speaker 11: I guess he would demand his own screenings and then
- 9:52Speaker 11: would bring in a giant plate of spaghetti and eat
- 9:54Speaker 11: spaghetti throughout the film. So that's just how I think
- 9:57Speaker 11: of him always.
- 9:58Speaker 6: Which person? Roger Ebert. Roger Ebert?
- 10:00Speaker 4: I would do that. So that's how I imagine it.
- 10:02Speaker 8: He had a spaghetti show before we did.
- 10:07Speaker 4: As long as he always referred to it as bisketty.
- 10:10Speaker 8: This very educated man still refers to it as bisketty.
- 10:14Speaker 4: He walks into the theater, looks the usher in the eye,
- 10:16Speaker 4: holding the plays like, I've earned this.
- 10:19Speaker 6: I'm just thinking he sort of beat Austin to that
- 10:21Speaker 6: whole thing. He sort of invented that. He's like, I'm
- 10:24Speaker 6: also bringing a beer in here. Stop me. I'm Roger Ebert.
- 10:27Speaker 4: I'm Roger Ebert. He says that first.
- 10:30Speaker 6: I don't know, but that is one of those that
- 10:33Speaker 6: he wrote so much anyway, but then when I saw,
- 10:35Speaker 6: like you were saying, how much he really found his
- 10:38Speaker 6: voice when he didn't literally have one anymore, they said
- 10:41Speaker 6: he had been, for 46 years, he'd been writing reviews,
- 10:45Speaker 6: and they said he was writing like 200 reviews a
- 10:48Speaker 6: year until this last year it's last year he's quoted
- 10:52Speaker 6: and said last year I wrote the most of my
- 10:54Speaker 6: career including 306 movie reviews a blog post or two
- 10:58Speaker 6: a week and other assorted articles That's amazing. Like, really,
- 11:03Speaker 6: that was all he did.
- 11:03Speaker 4: The most introspective, like, writing was, like, I mean, it started,
- 11:06Speaker 4: I think, I don't know when he started doing his, like,
- 11:08Speaker 4: great movies. Like, I don't know when exactly that started.
- 11:11Speaker 4: I think he's been doing it for a long time.
- 11:12Speaker 4: I think he started compiling them in the 90s. In
- 11:14Speaker 4: the 90s. But, like, I mean, those were just really
- 11:17Speaker 4: reflective and just kind of went deeper into his personal
- 11:19Speaker 4: taste and how movies affected him. And before that, like,
- 11:23Speaker 4: when you read his really old reviews, I guess, like,
- 11:26Speaker 4: from the 70s and 80s, like, when I would just
- 11:27Speaker 4: look up random stuff, They just felt like, you know,
- 11:30Speaker 4: very strict movie reviews, you know, and there wasn't, they
- 11:33Speaker 4: were still very well written and interesting, but I felt like,
- 11:36Speaker 4: you know, after reading, like, his great movie series, and then,
- 11:41Speaker 4: you know, he went to the internet and started doing
- 11:42Speaker 4: his blog, and especially after, like, you know, he got
- 11:45Speaker 4: his cancer, like, he just went into, like, Superman mode
- 11:49Speaker 4: in terms of just, you know, his writing quality, I thought,
- 11:52Speaker 4: at least.
- 11:53Speaker 6: I think he just focused. Like, there wasn't anything else
- 11:56Speaker 6: at that point.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Yeah, the focus just intensified, I think.
- 11:57Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:59Speaker 5: I'm just amazed at how many movies he saw. I mean, yeah,
- 12:03Speaker 5: I mean, I'm sure he has access to them. That's the,
- 12:06Speaker 5: that's the most important part, I think for me. But
- 12:08Speaker 5: I was like, I was looking recently at the things
- 12:12Speaker 5: that he's written. I was like, he's written a review
- 12:14Speaker 5: on everything.
- 12:15Speaker 8: And it's, that's the whole thing is dedicating so much
- 12:18Speaker 8: to like modern films.
- 12:20Speaker 9: Cause I just have trouble prioritizing what's in theaters.
- 12:24Speaker 4: There's always have.
- 12:25Speaker 8: I mean, it's, I usually see about 200 new movies
- 12:27Speaker 8: a year, but it's, In the way of what's actually
- 12:30Speaker 8: in theaters, I see maybe 25 to 50. And usually
- 12:33Speaker 8: then I'm mostly seeing the Oscar stuff because it's nominated
- 12:36Speaker 8: and I want to have an objective opinion having seen
- 12:40Speaker 8: all the films.
- 12:41Speaker 4: But I don't know.
- 12:42Speaker 8: I just tend to find more time to watch older stuff.
- 12:46Speaker 8: Of course, I guess you could argue that near the
- 12:48Speaker 8: end of his career he had already seen a substantial
- 12:51Speaker 8: amount that was older. But he still would review films.
- 12:54Speaker 8: older films that he would discover, too. Or go back
- 12:56Speaker 8: and re-review something that he felt like he'd.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Misjudged.
- 13:01Speaker 8: Wasn't it, I think, Blade Runner that he panned first
- 13:04Speaker 8: time around and went back and reappraised it?
- 13:06Speaker 6: It was interesting that he would do that on occasion.
- 13:09Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I did too.
- 13:09Speaker 4: His great movie series. And he did that a couple
- 13:12Speaker 4: times on some other movies. So I was just always,
- 13:15Speaker 4: I mean, he still hadn't, you know, he never really
- 13:17Speaker 4: did change his stance on a lot of kind of,
- 13:21Speaker 4: which I thought was kind of awesome like you know
- 13:23Speaker 4: he never really i mean he didn't dislike it but
- 13:26Speaker 4: he was never like a huge uh you know he
- 13:30Speaker 4: never really got behind the godfather 2 or like like
- 13:34Speaker 4: blue velvet like those were kind of his notorious kind
- 13:36Speaker 4: of like everyone holds those movies up as a classic
- 13:38Speaker 4: and he still like would remind people like i still
- 13:40Speaker 4: don't think this movie's very good and i just thought
- 13:42Speaker 4: that was kind of awesome like he never really caved
- 13:44Speaker 4: in to popular opinion or like.
- 13:47Speaker 6: Well, I know we have a lot of horror fans,
- 13:49Speaker 6: and a lot of what we watch is horror. He
- 13:51Speaker 6: was never big on horror.
- 13:53Speaker 4: And it's funny.
- 13:54Speaker 6: But to me, it's not that he was biased against it.
- 13:57Speaker 6: He was just really hard on it. It was like
- 13:59Speaker 6: he wanted to hold it to that standard. And I
- 14:02Speaker 6: know a lot of people in the horror scene didn't
- 14:05Speaker 6: like him just because he was always kind of giving
- 14:07Speaker 6: it back to you.
- 14:08Speaker 8: Well, just because I think when it comes to both
- 14:10Speaker 8: horror and romance, both of them are totally focused on
- 14:14Speaker 8: trying to exploit one emotion more often than tell a story.
- 14:17Speaker 9: And I guess you could say the same goes for comedy.
- 14:19Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 14:21Speaker 9: It's just I feel like it's such an.
- 14:23Speaker 8: Easy medium to just go with the cheap punches, and
- 14:27Speaker 8: so often people do. And if anything, it's like I
- 14:30Speaker 8: appreciate the fact that he's trying to crucify.
- 14:33Speaker 9: These individuals that are just doing that.
- 14:35Speaker 8: They're just trying to exploit rather than tell a story,
- 14:37Speaker 8: which is what I always kind of liked about one
- 14:39Speaker 8: of his more frequently quoted films, comments on movies.
- 14:43Speaker 9: It's not what a film is about, but how it
- 14:45Speaker 9: is about it.
- 14:46Speaker 4: I always appreciate that.
- 14:47Speaker 8: It's like, yeah, it can be a very, very cheesy premise,
- 14:50Speaker 8: but if they went all out for it, why not
- 14:53Speaker 8: give them props for doing just that?
- 14:55Speaker 9: I mean, I always kind of appreciated that. Me doing
- 14:58Speaker 9: like my.
- 14:59Speaker 8: Own goofy little low budgets projects on the side. So,
- 15:02Speaker 8: I mean, I always use that as a recipe, even
- 15:04Speaker 8: like when he gave a good review to Jackass 2
- 15:07Speaker 8: of all things. It's like, technically, if you look at it,
- 15:11Speaker 8: they do a lot with the money they have, especially
- 15:13Speaker 8: at the ending of this huge musical finale. I mean,
- 15:16Speaker 8: other points in the film, it's just, let's get this
- 15:18Speaker 8: animal to ram someone in the balls. But it was
- 15:21Speaker 8: also strange that he was talking about how it's like
- 15:23Speaker 8: the natural extension of all the early physical comedy that
- 15:27Speaker 8: you had was like, you know, Keaton and Lloyd and
- 15:30Speaker 8: stuff like that. And I was like, that's a really
- 15:32Speaker 8: weird take for a critic to take on jackass when
- 15:35Speaker 8: everybody else is just dumping on it.
- 15:37Speaker 6: Yeah, that's one of the other things. I like that
- 15:39Speaker 6: he held horror to that kind of standard. And I
- 15:41Speaker 6: like that he also didn't play the snobby critic role.
- 15:44Speaker 6: Like there's sometimes when he would pick something totally out
- 15:47Speaker 6: of the blue like that and just be like, you
- 15:48Speaker 6: know what? I don't care what anybody else says. I
- 15:51Speaker 6: like this movie. I'm sticking with it. And like he
- 15:53Speaker 6: would pick stuff that was just weird and things you
- 15:55Speaker 6: would never expect him to like and just be totally
- 15:58Speaker 6: on board. Or big, you know, Oscar caliber movies and
- 16:00Speaker 6: be like, nope, don't thank you. So he didn't just
- 16:03Speaker 6: play the straightforward, you know, safe critic mode. He did
- 16:08Speaker 6: whatever the hell he wanted to do.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Well, he also told you why a movie did or
- 16:12Speaker 1: didn't work.
- 16:12Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:13Speaker 1: You know, what was wrong with the plot, the pacing.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Just a really thorough, I guess, reviewer.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:22Speaker 7: He was just smart.
- 16:23Speaker 6: Yeah. And we, I mean, in our, like, people that
- 16:26Speaker 6: get overlooked in the oscars special that was one that
- 16:30Speaker 6: at the time really pissed me off that they did
- 16:33Speaker 6: not mention siskel when he passed and i'm like that
- 16:37Speaker 6: i i understand they like it's everybody in the industry
- 16:40Speaker 6: in the industry but i was like i did because
- 16:43Speaker 6: i still.
- 16:43Speaker 8: Remember that no he wasn't but it had happened like
- 16:45Speaker 8: a week before or something like that and i remember
- 16:48Speaker 8: whoopi goldberg she was hosting that year and she said
- 16:51Speaker 8: incidentally we had a recent loss and she just like
- 16:54Speaker 8: gave a thumbs up She got everyone to do a
- 16:56Speaker 8: thumbs up for him. Because I remember that during the
- 17:00Speaker 8: Oscar ceremony. It had happened less than a week before
- 17:04Speaker 8: the Oscar ceremony.
- 17:06Speaker 9: I remember that. Because I guess that would be... I'm
- 17:09Speaker 9: trying to remember. I think that would be 2001's Oscars.
- 17:14Speaker 6: I don't know anybody that had an impact on the
- 17:19Speaker 6: public consciousness of appreciating film like those two guys. The
- 17:24Speaker 6: I mean, nobody, like there aren't any critics that have
- 17:27Speaker 6: ever broken through to even to the point of the
- 17:30Speaker 6: mainstream and to make people in the mainstream, maybe rethink big,
- 17:34Speaker 6: dumb Hollywood movies and be like, Oh, maybe, maybe there
- 17:37Speaker 6: is something more. Maybe I should question them a little more.
- 17:39Speaker 6: And that's, I think the two of them did more
- 17:42Speaker 6: in that area than anybody else ever.
- 17:44Speaker 8: And I had an interesting talk with a friend talking
- 17:45Speaker 8: about how it might be the day that like professional
- 17:49Speaker 8: movie reviews have sort of died. I mean, you still
- 17:52Speaker 8: have people who've been doing it for a while. Like
- 17:54Speaker 8: I was saying, Peter Travers earlier, A.O. Scott, you know,
- 17:56Speaker 8: folks have been around for a while. But he was
- 17:59Speaker 8: the first one to really set that precedent. And now,
- 18:01Speaker 8: I mean, anybody who just wants to get on and
- 18:03Speaker 8: get a free blogging account can ramble about movies.
- 18:06Speaker 7: We do it all the time.
- 18:07Speaker 15: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:09Speaker 8: But he actually, like, worked his way up through the
- 18:11Speaker 8: journalistic ranks to achieve that success.
- 18:14Speaker 6: And there are no names now. I mean, even like,
- 18:18Speaker 6: there aren't anybody, like Rex Reed used to be a
- 18:20Speaker 6: name now.
- 18:21Speaker 4: It's like, What kids are going to see now.
- 18:23Speaker 8: Leonard Moulton has always kind of been a gag name.
- 18:25Speaker 6: Leonard Moulton is still fun. He's still out there and
- 18:28Speaker 6: he's still doing it. And he's got a good sense
- 18:30Speaker 6: of humor. I like Leonard Moulton. But again, he's not,
- 18:33Speaker 6: I don't know, he doesn't have the take on it
- 18:36Speaker 6: that Ebert did.
- 18:36Speaker 9: He doesn't have the presence that Ebert did.
- 18:38Speaker 6: No, he does the guide. And at this point, even
- 18:41Speaker 6: half the guide is turned over to his staff. So,
- 18:43Speaker 6: I mean, he just does it. He doesn't focus.
- 18:46Speaker 4: He seems like a movie just grader. He doesn't seem
- 18:48Speaker 4: like a movie lover. He's funny. If there's anyone who's
- 18:54Speaker 4: seen more movies than Roger Ebert, it's probably Leonard Vaughn.
- 18:57Speaker 4: That guy's seen everything. That just reminded me, because I
- 19:03Speaker 4: saw an interesting thing on Twitter the other day. After
- 19:06Speaker 4: Ebert died, someone made the comment, and it's true, this
- 19:10Speaker 4: is the last time there's going to be this kind
- 19:12Speaker 4: of public... outpouring of just mourning for a movie critic ever. Like,
- 19:17Speaker 4: this isn't going to happen again. I think that's true
- 19:20Speaker 4: of journalism anyway.
- 19:23Speaker 5: Journalism is dying and journalists will be dying.
- 19:27Speaker 1: There are no more household names in journalism anymore.
- 19:30Speaker 6: There haven't been for decades.
- 19:32Speaker 1: A long time.
- 19:32Speaker 6: There's no names. It's all people on the internet now.
- 19:35Speaker 6: And anybody can do it on the internet. So there's
- 19:37Speaker 6: no focus where anybody gets to be a name.
- 19:39Speaker 9: There aren't any Walter Cronkites, you know.
- 19:41Speaker 11: Right.
- 19:41Speaker 4: Or Andy Rooney's either.
- 19:43Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 19:43Speaker 4: It's all that stuff is.
- 19:44Speaker 7: Going, is falling by the wayside.
- 19:46Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 19:47Speaker 6: I just thought it was sort of a big deal.
- 19:50Speaker 6: and certainly in our little world here and talking about
- 19:53Speaker 6: movies that yeah it's a big passing I think so
- 19:56Speaker 6: I thought we would at least address it this.
- 19:58Speaker 8: Week like I said I didn't spend when I found
- 20:00Speaker 8: out I didn't I actually still haven't read it like
- 20:03Speaker 8: any in memoriams I just popped in Beyond the Valley
- 20:06Speaker 8: of Dolls and said alright let's roll with this.
- 20:09Speaker 6: His one movie.
- 20:10Speaker 4: We're sticking with it. I also have to credit him.
- 20:12Speaker 4: He's the whole reason that, you know, I was drawn to,
- 20:16Speaker 4: who's now like my favorite director, Werner Herzog. And I
- 20:19Speaker 4: also think he really, like the way he championed Herzog,
- 20:22Speaker 4: like he was definitely one of his favorite filmmakers. I
- 20:24Speaker 4: honestly think he had a big hand in just introducing
- 20:28Speaker 4: a new generation to his movies. Like I really do think, like,
- 20:31Speaker 4: you know, where you can get, like I have like
- 20:33Speaker 4: the box set, like one of his box sets, and
- 20:35Speaker 4: you know, even on the cover, it has this like
- 20:37Speaker 4: ribbon cover that you... that's bound around it where it
- 20:40Speaker 4: has a quote from Roger Ebert about Klaus Kinski and, uh, Herzog.
- 20:44Speaker 4: And just, he would constantly write about it. He always
- 20:46Speaker 4: gave them these amazing reviews. He would like always make
- 20:48Speaker 4: it a point whenever Herzog had a new documentary on
- 20:51Speaker 4: the show to like champion it and to, you know,
- 20:53Speaker 4: go back to why Herzog is this great filmmaker. And
- 20:56Speaker 4: I just thought that was just really awesome. Cause I mean,
- 20:58Speaker 4: I wouldn't even know, I probably wouldn't even have seen her.
- 21:02Speaker 4: I mean, I would have seen maybe grizzly man, but
- 21:03Speaker 4: I wouldn't have gone any further than that if it
- 21:05Speaker 4: weren't for Ebert. So That was pretty awesome.
- 21:08Speaker 9: I won't take any shame at all to say, Roger Ebert,
- 21:10Speaker 9: you are my superwoman.
- 21:12Speaker 7: And I'll leave it at that.
- 21:16Speaker 6: All right. Well, we've set our piece for Roger. He
- 21:21Speaker 6: will be missed by many, I'm sure. We will take
- 21:24Speaker 6: a break here and we're going to get rid of
- 21:26Speaker 6: some of these bastards because they didn't go see the.
- 21:28Speaker 7: Movie this week.
- 21:29Speaker 6: So we're going to cut a few of you loose
- 21:30Speaker 6: and then the rest of us will be back to watch.
- 21:32Speaker 9: I was too busy cleaning up after you.
- 21:33Speaker 6: I threw as much popcorn on the floor as We
- 21:38Speaker 6: will be back to talk about the movie.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Popcorn freshly popped and buttered.
- 22:13Speaker 14: Look good?
- 22:14Speaker 2: Sure, it looks good and it tastes even better.
- 22:16Speaker 10: Get some now.

- 23:53Speaker 12: And we're going to talk to you about why you
- 23:54Speaker 12: should be listening to the Corpus Broadcast.
- 23:56Speaker 14: Let's do that.
- 23:57Speaker 15: Let's, indeed. Why should they be listening to the Gold
- 24:00Speaker 15: Press broadcast?
- 24:01Speaker 14: Well, firstly, because it's awesome, obviously.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Obviously.
- 24:03Speaker 15: I mean, that's a given, or a given.
- 24:05Speaker 6: A given, yeah.
- 24:06Speaker 14: You can expect nonsensical puns like that.
- 24:09Speaker 15: Yeah. With zero context.
- 24:11Speaker 14: Absolutely zero context.
- 24:13Speaker 15: But also, we review horror films.
- 24:15Speaker 14: Mostly, we review horror films, I would say.
- 24:17Speaker 15: Well, yeah. That's probably the bulk of what we do.
- 24:20Speaker 4: Yep.
- 24:21Speaker 15: We also look at new releases, top five lists.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Yep.
- 24:25Speaker 15: We cover theme months.
- 24:26Speaker 14: Yeah, we do some horror news.
- 24:27Speaker 15: Yeah, tell us about the theme months that we've covered.
- 24:29Speaker 14: We have done Horror Behind Bars.
- 24:32Speaker 15: Yeah, we did Clowntown, where we looked at clown movies.
- 24:33Speaker 4: We did.
- 24:34Speaker 14: We've done Trash Kings.
- 24:35Speaker 15: Trash Kings, where we looked at the films of Fred Olymbray,
- 24:37Speaker 15: Jim Winovski and David Ducato.
- 24:39Speaker 14: Yeah, we've done a bunch of stuff. We've got Revenge
- 24:42Speaker 14: Month in the works, Trauma Month. So yeah, loads of
- 24:45Speaker 14: stuff like that.
- 24:45Speaker 15: Loads of stuff. So if you like horror films, you
- 24:47Speaker 15: should probably listen to Godfrey's Goldcast.
- 24:49Speaker 6: Absolutely. Where.
- 24:50Speaker 15: here, and we're ready to believe you. So that's not
- 24:54Speaker 15: all you can get.
- 24:55Speaker 12: You can also get extra super bonus content when you
- 24:58Speaker 12: subscribe to the feed.
- 24:59Speaker 15: Tell them about it, Sarah. Tell them. Tell them now.

- 25:04Speaker 14: ripping off Mystery Science Theatre. Yeah, basically getting drunk, chatting
- 25:08Speaker 14: over the top of a film, and hopefully being quite entertaining,
- 25:11Speaker 14: I think.
- 25:12Speaker 12: There are two ways to find the show. You can
- 25:13Speaker 12: find us over at iTunes by searching for the new

- 25:42Speaker 3: Anybody who's into smut.
- 25:44Speaker 6: Hey guys, look what I've got. Check out these awesome
- 25:47Speaker 6: earbuds I'm using right now. Look at that. That's wood
- 25:51Speaker 6: right there. That's actual wood.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Why would you use wood to make technology?
- 25:56Speaker 6: Because they're... It's like... They're steampunk.
- 26:00Speaker 9: Is steampunk really wood?
- 26:02Speaker 4: I thought it was more of a brass thing.
- 26:03Speaker 6: Well, you got to work the wood in to hold
- 26:05Speaker 6: the brass together. These are the fancy high-end steampunk versions
- 26:09Speaker 6: with a mic built in, mind you. But yeah, where
- 26:13Speaker 6: would I... Get these you under tweaked audio.
- 26:19Speaker 7: Way to pitch.

- 26:34Speaker 6: I was using the knockoff crappy ones I bought at
- 26:36Speaker 6: the store and I, I got these and put them in.
- 26:39Speaker 6: I was like, Oh shit, that's right. These are actually
- 26:41Speaker 6: really good. So they are professional.
- 26:43Speaker 7: Quality earbuds, mind you.
- 26:45Speaker 6: And, you know, noise reducing, compatible with your iPods and

- 28:09Speaker 4: Out of town. The possessed must be cleansed.
- 28:15Speaker 16: There was something in the woods.
- 28:22Speaker 14: What are you doing?
- 28:27Speaker 4: Mia put the gun down. You are all going to
- 28:29Speaker 4: die tonight. Something evil is attached to Mia's soul. We're
- 28:37Speaker 4: gonna have.
- 28:38Speaker 6: To kill her.
- 28:38Speaker 4: This is insane. It's three boys.
- 28:41Speaker 1: A live burial. Purification by fire.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Why are you hurting me?
- 28:52Speaker 15: You're not her.

- 29:30Speaker 9: to evil you succumb.
- 29:32Speaker 4: So just lay.
- 29:32Speaker 6: Down that big gun and join.
- 29:34Speaker 17: Our dark army of evil Kantarian demons as we conquer
- 29:39Speaker 17: this land and take over each and every soul of
- 29:43Speaker 17: the living.
- 29:43Speaker 15: No!
- 29:43Speaker 8: No! No, I'm not!
- 29:48Speaker 1: Dad saw three, then one, then two.
- 29:50Speaker 4: Two was the first one I saw, but that was
- 29:52Speaker 4: only because my friend's dad in grade school was this
- 29:55Speaker 4: cool guy who had all these Laserdisc of horror movies,
- 29:58Speaker 4: like a whole den collection of it, and he showed
- 30:00Speaker 4: it to us, and I was like.
- 30:01Speaker 15: Six years old.
- 30:02Speaker 6: What's this shiny record?
- 30:04Speaker 4: Yeah, you only had two on Laserdisc. That wasn't my
- 30:06Speaker 4: favorite movie viewing experience.
- 30:08Speaker 6: It's red. I got the special edition. It's a red Laserdisc.
- 30:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I remember it was red.
- 30:13Speaker 6: It had a sticker on it, Blood Red Lasers.
- 30:15Speaker 4: Yeah, he had all the stuff collected. It was great.
- 30:17Speaker 1: That's kind of cool.
- 30:18Speaker 6: That's one of the reasons I still have it, because
- 30:20Speaker 6: I don't, well, that's not true. I just watch something
- 30:22Speaker 6: on my desk. So I will technically still watch that occasionally,
- 30:27Speaker 6: but mostly I kept it because it's red, and it's
- 30:29Speaker 6: pretty awesome. All right, we are back, and we've cut
- 30:32Speaker 6: loose a few of those suckers. So to reestablish who
- 30:36Speaker 6: is on hand now.
- 30:38Speaker 7: Would you like to reintroduce yourself?
- 30:40Speaker 4: Hi, I'm Brian.
- 30:40Speaker 14: Hi, I'm Phillip.
- 30:41Speaker 1: I'm Christian.
- 30:42Speaker 4: I'm Christian. I'm Ben.
- 30:43Speaker 14: I'm Bo.
- 30:45Speaker 4: That's a bye. I'm Lucy.
- 30:48Speaker 7: All right, then.
- 30:48Speaker 4: You almost had me.
- 30:49Speaker 6: I was going to ruin him. I can't believe Bo
- 30:52Speaker 6: said that. What a horrible person he is.
- 30:56Speaker 17: God.
- 30:58Speaker 6: I liked Bo up until this episode, but it just
- 31:00Speaker 6: went downhill after that Ebert thing. So, this week's Out
- 31:05Speaker 6: on the Town feature is Evil Dead, the year, obviously, 2013.
- 31:08Speaker 6: The director, I'll try to get this right, Fede Alvarez?
- 31:14Speaker 6: They plot, according to IMDb, five friends head to a
- 31:17Speaker 6: remote cabin where the discovery of a Book of the
- 31:19Speaker 6: Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in
- 31:23Speaker 6: the nearby woods. The evil presence possesses them until only
- 31:27Speaker 6: one is left to fight for survival. Spoiler alert! I mean,
- 31:30Speaker 6: I guess we saw that coming, but you might not
- 31:32Speaker 6: put that directly in the plot. Okay, um... Yeah. My thoughts...
- 31:39Speaker 6: I guess if we wanted to do some sort of intro,
- 31:41Speaker 6: it's based on, I mean, it was actually about a
- 31:44Speaker 6: year ago we did an entire episode based on remakes,
- 31:48Speaker 6: and it was just our discussion of remakes. And at
- 31:51Speaker 6: that point, it sort of turned things around for me.
- 31:54Speaker 6: I was at the point where everybody else and I
- 31:56Speaker 6: just bitched about remakes, and I was like, we'd found
- 31:58Speaker 6: so many good ones in that episode that I was
- 32:00Speaker 6: kind of like, okay, maybe I'm just being like everyone
- 32:04Speaker 6: else on the internet was, just kind of bitchy about it.
- 32:07Speaker 6: Maybe we should stop and think about it. And I
- 32:09Speaker 6: was like, the basic way to do this is to
- 32:11Speaker 6: take the original idea of the movie and not do
- 32:13Speaker 6: a shot for shot remake because that's boring. And why
- 32:16Speaker 6: would you do that? And not to completely do a
- 32:18Speaker 6: different story because why call it a remake then, but
- 32:21Speaker 6: to find some sort of middle ground and to take
- 32:24Speaker 6: that original idea and then put your own spin on
- 32:27Speaker 6: it and, you know, kind of stick with the basic concept,
- 32:30Speaker 6: but not stray too far that it doesn't make any sense.
- 32:33Speaker 6: And that would be the right way to do a remake.
- 32:36Speaker 6: That was my feelings going in. You guys, I guess,
- 32:38Speaker 6: can take it where you want. If we even want
- 32:40Speaker 6: to address it massively as the remake, I specifically didn't
- 32:43Speaker 6: go back and rewatch the original. We were talking about
- 32:46Speaker 6: that yesterday. Right. We kind of wanted it to stand
- 32:49Speaker 6: on its own, this new one. So, yeah, you guys,
- 32:53Speaker 6: where would you like to begin after that little breakdown there?
- 32:58Speaker 6: I think some people weren't as thrilled as others, so
- 33:00Speaker 6: we'll get into it.
- 33:01Speaker 11: Yeah, am I the only one that didn't like it?
- 33:02Speaker 11: I thought it stood on its own and it sucked
- 33:04Speaker 11: on its own, and that's all I've got.
- 33:08Speaker 4: I was very disappointed in it.
- 33:09Speaker 6: Hopefully you'll have more to back it up.
- 33:12Speaker 4: I mean, not just the fact that it, I mean, because,
- 33:14Speaker 4: you know, it's not like I was like, this has
- 33:16Speaker 4: to be as good as Evil Dead, because the first
- 33:17Speaker 4: one isn't my favorite. I was actually introduced to the
- 33:20Speaker 4: Evil Dead with the, you know, the 1981 version. like,
- 33:24Speaker 4: pretty late. Like, I had seen Evil Dead 2, then
- 33:27Speaker 4: Army of Darkness. Then a couple years later, I bought
- 33:29Speaker 4: the DVD of Evil Dead and finally saw it. And, like,
- 33:32Speaker 4: I admired it. I was like, yeah, this is entertaining.
- 33:34Speaker 4: This is fun. It has some really cool, gross effects
- 33:37Speaker 4: in it. And the campy bad acting without, you know,
- 33:40Speaker 4: trying to be good but still bad acting was fun.
- 33:44Speaker 4: And I was like, yeah, this is cool. So I
- 33:46Speaker 4: heard they were remaking this one. I saw the trailer.
- 33:49Speaker 4: I had my reservations. I was like, maybe they could do...
- 33:52Speaker 4: They have an angle with this. They're being very... It
- 33:55Speaker 4: could be this... I can see they're not going to
- 33:57Speaker 4: have a lot of humor. I'm fine with that. A
- 33:59Speaker 4: lot of people want the Evil Dead 2 kind of goofiness.
- 34:03Speaker 4: I'm fine with them not having humor because the first
- 34:05Speaker 4: one didn't necessarily have this outrageous sense of humor to it.
- 34:10Speaker 4: It was just all... The humor was just unintentional. But
- 34:14Speaker 4: this one was so.
- 34:17Speaker 4: I don't know. It was so by the book, not
- 34:20Speaker 4: by the book, but just like, we have to like,
- 34:22Speaker 4: here's now there's, here's the, uh, the demon in the
- 34:25Speaker 4: cellar and here's where some gross thing happens. And it
- 34:29Speaker 4: was just this, then this, then it just never really
- 34:31Speaker 4: had a sense of purpose. Like it did not need
- 34:34Speaker 4: to be made. That's kind of my general is just
- 34:38Speaker 4: that it just was unnecessary.
- 34:40Speaker 7: Pretty much.
- 34:41Speaker 4: It couldn't, if it were a better movie, I maybe
- 34:45Speaker 4: would have... I still probably thought it would have been unnecessary,
- 34:48Speaker 4: but it would still have been like I would have
- 34:50Speaker 4: appreciated it. But the movie still wasn't particularly good, so
- 34:55Speaker 4: it was just unnecessary and just not a movie I
- 34:57Speaker 4: liked very much.
- 34:59Speaker 11: See, I'm very confused by the tone, and maybe you guys...
- 35:02Speaker 11: Maybe I just missed it, but I didn't understand... I mean,
- 35:06Speaker 11: I don't, I remember the first one having a sense
- 35:09Speaker 11: of humor and a sense of joy to it that
- 35:11Speaker 11: I felt this one didn't have.
- 35:12Speaker 4: The first one, yeah, it did have, like, a sense of, like,
- 35:14Speaker 4: play to it. Like, it was like, you wanted the
- 35:17Speaker 4: audience to have fun. It didn't want you to be like, oh,
- 35:19Speaker 4: that's fucking terrible. Like, this is so gory. No, the
- 35:22Speaker 4: sequel did.
- 35:23Speaker 1: No, I just rewatched it.
- 35:24Speaker 4: Well, even the first one, no, no, I think Lucy's right. Like,
- 35:27Speaker 4: there really was this kind of, like, you could tell, like,
- 35:30Speaker 4: they were having, like, Sam Raimi was like, oh, this
- 35:32Speaker 4: is going to be, like, you know, this is going
- 35:33Speaker 4: to be a real, you know, experience, like, It's going
- 35:35Speaker 4: to be crazy. There's going to be an audience participate.
- 35:39Speaker 4: This is going to be this kind of fun. Horror
- 35:44Speaker 4: can still be scary and intense, but it can still
- 35:47Speaker 4: have this sense of uplift. And I think he was
- 35:49Speaker 4: going for that uplift. He wasn't trying to beat the
- 35:51Speaker 4: audience with these seriously intense... I mean, the gore was
- 35:58Speaker 4: probably way more intense at the time, but at the
- 36:00Speaker 4: same time, I don't think it was the same kind
- 36:02Speaker 4: of violence... Or this sense of self-seriousness that this one had.
- 36:10Speaker 4: That wasn't there in the original. And I don't know.
- 36:15Speaker 4: This one did have some... There were a little bit
- 36:18Speaker 4: of comedic. Especially just how outrageous it got. But overall,
- 36:23Speaker 4: the tone was just... I felt it wasn't quite right.
- 36:27Speaker 11: And it's not what I was expecting because knowing that
- 36:28Speaker 11: Diablo Cody worked on the screenplay, it felt like that's
- 36:31Speaker 11: why she was brought in, to give it this sort
- 36:33Speaker 11: of self-awareness and this sort of playfulness that I just
- 36:36Speaker 11: didn't think was there. It was, to me, just boring.
- 36:40Speaker 4: Yeah, that's the worst thing. What were you going to say?
- 36:43Speaker 18: No, I was just bored most of the time. I
- 36:47Speaker 18: just found it very boring, and I couldn't wait for
- 36:49Speaker 18: it to be over.
- 36:51Speaker 6: There was actually a spoiler.
- 36:52Speaker 14: We do that.
- 36:53Speaker 4: Okay.
- 36:53Speaker 8: Okay.
- 36:57Speaker 11: The sequence where the girlfriend gets dragged down the stairs.
- 37:02Speaker 11: So it shows her being pulled into the stairway and
- 37:05Speaker 11: then it goes black. And I was like, thank God
- 37:07Speaker 11: we're not going to dwell on this. She'll just be
- 37:09Speaker 11: dead and we can move on. And then it cuts
- 37:12Speaker 11: to like in the cellar.
- 37:12Speaker 6: It's like, oh, seriously?
- 37:14Speaker 4: It's like we have to have, yeah. And it's like
- 37:16Speaker 4: we've seen this. I mean, and this kind of, you know,
- 37:19Speaker 4: sequence can be well done where like someone's wandering around
- 37:22Speaker 4: in the basement. If it's put in the right context
- 37:24Speaker 4: and the direction's right and you're really, there really is
- 37:26Speaker 4: suspense there, you can have, the scene where the person's
- 37:29Speaker 4: holding a flashlight, looking around. And so that can be
- 37:31Speaker 4: scary as hell, but it's just, it felt so boring
- 37:35Speaker 4: in this movie. Like it was literally, I'm talking about
- 37:38Speaker 4: like this, particularly the scene, um, where, uh, the, the brother, uh,
- 37:43Speaker 4: it's like halfway through the movie, he's going down into
- 37:46Speaker 4: the cellar with a flashlight and he's looking for his
- 37:49Speaker 4: possessed demon sister. And of course you're like, okay, well,
- 37:52Speaker 4: you know, he doesn't see anything at first. And, you know,
- 37:53Speaker 4: at some point she's going to jump out. It's just
- 37:55Speaker 4: a matter of when. And, you know, in front of me, uh,
- 37:59Speaker 4: like some woman had her phone out and was texting.
- 38:02Speaker 4: I was like, I might actually like, I might break
- 38:04Speaker 4: my rule of not having my phone out in a theater.
- 38:09Speaker 4: Like if this, if this scene doesn't get to the point,
- 38:11Speaker 4: like it's just dragging. It's so boring. Like I just
- 38:14Speaker 4: checked out it.
- 38:16Speaker 1: I don't know. It's say I, I enjoyed the movie. Um,
- 38:20Speaker 1: I wasn't bored by it. Was it a quote unquote
- 38:22Speaker 1: good movie, but no, I don't think so. But at
- 38:25Speaker 1: the same time you could argue that the original one,
- 38:29Speaker 1: wasn't a technically good movie, which I'm a huge fan
- 38:31Speaker 1: of the original, don't get me wrong, and I tried
- 38:33Speaker 1: to do the best I could to separate the two movies,
- 38:37Speaker 1: which was really, really hard to do because there's so
- 38:39Speaker 1: much built up about the original Evil Dead. I think,
- 38:43Speaker 1: you know, did the movie have its flaws? Yes, it
- 38:46Speaker 1: had tons of them, but again, so did the original one.
- 38:49Speaker 1: And I kind of think that they, you know, I
- 38:52Speaker 1: think the filmmakers knew, look, we've got a lot to
- 38:54Speaker 1: live up here, got a lot to live up to.
- 38:57Speaker 1: If we make it a good Polished movie. Everybody's going
- 39:00Speaker 1: to bitch about how, well, you know, the original one
- 39:02Speaker 1: was just a bunch of kids making a movie, which
- 39:05Speaker 1: is what it was. And they created something special. But
- 39:08Speaker 1: if we, you know, if the same time, if we
- 39:10Speaker 1: make it look like we're slacking off, we're going to
- 39:12Speaker 1: have a crappy product. But I think overall, I mean,
- 39:15Speaker 1: it was just. You know, it didn't... Passable? It didn't try... Like,
- 39:21Speaker 1: say I enjoyed it.
- 39:22Speaker 4: Yeah, I totally get it. And I kind of agree
- 39:24Speaker 4: with people who are saying it's solid, it works, it
- 39:26Speaker 4: gets the job done.
- 39:27Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, but.
- 39:29Speaker 4: I totally... does, but at the same time for me,
- 39:32Speaker 4: having seen this kind of movie so many times, the
- 39:35Speaker 4: novelty that the original had when it came out, how
- 39:38Speaker 4: that novelty overcame the many flaws of it, the polished
- 39:43Speaker 4: aspect or the direction of this one does not overcome
- 39:46Speaker 4: those flaws in the same way that the novelty of
- 39:47Speaker 4: the original did, and that's why this doesn't work.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Well, I think, you know, because especially if you're familiar
- 39:53Speaker 1: with the original Evil Dead, there's nothing. You shouldn't take
- 39:57Speaker 1: that movie seriously, just like this one. I mean, it's
- 40:00Speaker 1: just a splatter film with a supernatural element from beginning
- 40:04Speaker 1: to end. And I think if you look at it
- 40:06Speaker 1: that way, if you don't look at it to try to,
- 40:09Speaker 1: you know, exceed any sort of expectation, I think it
- 40:12Speaker 1: more or less works.
- 40:14Speaker 11: I felt like this film was trying to be taken seriously.
- 40:17Speaker 11: Or that maybe some of the actors thought this was
- 40:19Speaker 11: a serious film.
- 40:19Speaker 6: I couldn't really.
- 40:21Speaker 2: The.
- 40:21Speaker 4: Actors did not... Yeah, that's one thing. The actors did
- 40:23Speaker 4: not seem to like... I felt like the lead felt
- 40:25Speaker 4: like she was trying to make it way more... She
- 40:29Speaker 4: was actually one of the better... I mean, I think
- 40:32Speaker 4: Jane Levy, she was really good in the movie. But
- 40:34Speaker 4: at the same time.
- 40:35Speaker 6: I really liked her in it, actually.
- 40:36Speaker 15: Yeah, she.
- 40:36Speaker 4: I mean, you really bought into her performance.
- 40:38Speaker 6: But.
- 40:39Speaker 4: And maybe it's just, I think all the actors did fine, really.
- 40:43Speaker 4: It's just, I think all of the, whatever you would
- 40:44Speaker 4: call bad acting, that's all pretty much the fault of
- 40:47Speaker 4: a really, really underdeveloped script that literally has dialogue that's
- 40:52Speaker 4: just all exposition for 30 minutes, where they're just like,
- 40:54Speaker 4: I'm your sister. Just like, oh, she's your sister.
- 40:56Speaker 11: Yeah, okay.
- 40:58Speaker 4: And it's just that kind of dialogue that you have
- 41:01Speaker 4: to get past. And some characters just aren't given that
- 41:03Speaker 4: much to say, so they just seem like, you know...
- 41:07Speaker 4: people might confuse bad acting with just like, no, they
- 41:09Speaker 4: just didn't say much. You know, they just were there
- 41:11Speaker 4: and everyone did a good job. Like the actors were fine.
- 41:14Speaker 4: They're way like miles and miles better than the, you know,
- 41:17Speaker 4: as far as acting job or ability, you know, than
- 41:19Speaker 4: the original.
- 41:20Speaker 1: I didn't care for the actor who played David, who
- 41:24Speaker 1: is basically the character of David has replaced the character
- 41:27Speaker 1: of Ash, who of course is played by Bruce Campbell,
- 41:30Speaker 1: which I thought that was a good idea to kind
- 41:32Speaker 1: of change it up a little bit. Cause I think
- 41:34Speaker 1: that did help to separate it. The other thing, though,
- 41:37Speaker 1: that I wasn't really crazy about was they tried to
- 41:40Speaker 1: give you a little bit of backstory to what had
- 41:43Speaker 1: happened in that area before the kids got there. Because
- 41:47Speaker 1: I think within the original, they just kind of show up.
- 41:51Speaker 1: They're just there to party. There's no big super reason
- 41:53Speaker 1: why they're there. And I think that in the original
- 41:56Speaker 1: kind of helped move the story along a little bit
- 41:58Speaker 1: because it's really not much of a story.
- 42:00Speaker 4: I don't know why they felt the need that they
- 42:02Speaker 4: had to address, like, why are they at this cabin?
- 42:05Speaker 4: It's like, does it matter? Like, people just go, like,
- 42:07Speaker 4: this happens all the time with college. Like, they just
- 42:09Speaker 4: go out to a cabin to have fun. Like, why
- 42:10Speaker 4: does there need to be this dramatic... And then it's just,
- 42:14Speaker 4: and the fact that the whole thing with the heroin
- 42:16Speaker 4: detox is not followed through, like, it's not addressed, or, like,
- 42:19Speaker 4: there's no change in her character. Like, there's no... It just,
- 42:22Speaker 4: it's totally just pushed away, and it's like, now people
- 42:25Speaker 4: get possessed. All that, all the heroin thing was there for, apparently,
- 42:28Speaker 4: was just to explain why they're at the cabin. It's like, well,
- 42:30Speaker 4: why did you need this crazy convoluted heroin thing when
- 42:34Speaker 4: you could just been like they're just up there to
- 42:35Speaker 4: have some fun like if you're not gonna push if
- 42:37Speaker 4: you're not gonna if you're not gonna develop it later
- 42:39Speaker 4: into the film then why have that kind of they.
- 42:42Speaker 1: Did kind of they did kind of touch on that
- 42:44Speaker 1: earlier with how they talked how you know they had
- 42:46Speaker 1: gone through it before with her and she'd given up
- 42:49Speaker 1: and they needed to make sure that she didn't try
- 42:51Speaker 1: to escape this time yeah.
- 42:52Speaker 13: I think that was the main thing they wanted they
- 42:54Speaker 13: really really.
- 42:55Speaker 4: Wanted to like address critics and i'm not one of
- 42:57Speaker 4: those critics i think it's dumb if you're like why
- 42:59Speaker 4: don't If you watch a horror movie and you get
- 43:01Speaker 4: mad at people who make dumb decisions, then you're just
- 43:03Speaker 4: not watching it for the right reason. You know what
- 43:04Speaker 4: I mean? Like, why don't they just leave the cabin? Well,
- 43:07Speaker 4: it's like, I think the bridge thing is enough of a,
- 43:10Speaker 4: that's all you need. Like, the fact that the bridge
- 43:11Speaker 4: is out, that's, like, fine. I don't need to, a
- 43:14Speaker 4: strict reason why they can't literally leave the building or
- 43:17Speaker 4: the cabin itself. Like, you know, that the heroin thing
- 43:19Speaker 4: apparently is there for that. Like, you know, we're not
- 43:21Speaker 4: going to let you leave this cabin. I don't think
- 43:24Speaker 4: you need it. That was just trying too hard to
- 43:28Speaker 4: really address those kind of critics. It was trying to
- 43:33Speaker 4: reinvent the movie. They were just looking at the wrong
- 43:36Speaker 4: areas of the movie in terms of reinventing it. Addressing
- 43:39Speaker 4: that kind of criticism just seemed pointless to me.
- 43:43Speaker 11: The heroin thing did set up the fact that she
- 43:45Speaker 11: had died and been brought back to life. It actually
- 43:50Speaker 11: does fit in in a number of ways. It also
- 43:51Speaker 11: explains her crazy appearance and I mean, it takes them
- 43:54Speaker 11: a really long time to figure out that she's actually possessed. Like,
- 43:57Speaker 11: they think it's the withdrawal symptoms for so long.
- 44:00Speaker 6: Pasty and sweaty.
- 44:01Speaker 11: Right.
- 44:02Speaker 4: That's my favorite part.
- 44:02Speaker 1: And especially to convince her brother.
- 44:03Speaker 18: Like, you know, it took him a really long time
- 44:06Speaker 18: to finally admit that it wasn't just the withdrawal that,
- 44:10Speaker 18: you know, being the reason that she was acting the
- 44:12Speaker 18: way she was.
- 44:12Speaker 6: That really is my favorite part of this version of it.
- 44:15Speaker 4: Well, that's the thing. Why do they feel the need
- 44:17Speaker 4: to have this slow... possession where it's just like someone
- 44:20Speaker 4: starts to act funny it's like what's wrong with me
- 44:22Speaker 4: why couldn't she be instantly possessed like in the original
- 44:24Speaker 4: why couldn't it be that kind of dead eye like
- 44:26Speaker 4: boom you're a deep like that could have been fun
- 44:29Speaker 4: you know i mean they had to have this realistic
- 44:31Speaker 4: not even sam raimi dead eyes like it was the
- 44:33Speaker 4: sense of like trying to be this exorcist like you
- 44:37Speaker 4: know extra you know like you know last exorcism or
- 44:40Speaker 4: whatever like they start to act funny and then they
- 44:42Speaker 4: slowly become this possessed person and it's like that's not
- 44:46Speaker 4: really evil dead that's like That's trying to be this...
- 44:50Speaker 4: I don't know more of a... Not subtle, but it's
- 44:54Speaker 4: going this... Like an exorcist route. That doesn't really work.
- 45:00Speaker 4: The sense of Sam Raimi's deadites was not in the
- 45:02Speaker 4: movie at all. I mean, that's fine since I know
- 45:04Speaker 4: it's not Sam Raimi's movie. But it just made me
- 45:07Speaker 4: realize how much that aspect is crucial to an Evil
- 45:11Speaker 4: Dead movie. Because it was lacking that.
- 45:13Speaker 6: And also.
- 45:17Speaker 4: I mean, the fact that a lot of the movie's
- 45:19Speaker 4: focus was on... It made me think to the scene
- 45:22Speaker 4: in The Evil Dead 1 that really made... People think
- 45:25Speaker 4: of it as this movie where you have to hide
- 45:26Speaker 4: your eyes. It was the scene where the pencil stabbing
- 45:29Speaker 4: in the Achilles heel. That kind of really... I feel
- 45:32Speaker 4: like this director saw that scene. The movie was really
- 45:35Speaker 4: drawn to that scene. He's like, that's what my movie's
- 45:37Speaker 4: going to be. It's just a bunch of that. Like
- 45:39Speaker 4: a bunch of people getting hit with nail guns. People
- 45:42Speaker 4: getting beat. It's really just like, ah, with just needles.
- 45:45Speaker 4: It's not going to be really about demonic possession. It's
- 45:47Speaker 4: not going to be about devils or witches. I don't
- 45:50Speaker 4: care about that stuff. I care about the fucking nail
- 45:53Speaker 4: in the arm and stuff. And that's just what the
- 45:56Speaker 4: movie felt like to me. And I just felt like
- 45:59Speaker 4: it just focused on that.
- 46:00Speaker 6: The drug aspect is actually my favorite part of this version.
- 46:04Speaker 4: I think it was. Yeah, I think it was. And
- 46:07Speaker 4: I think because it just gives it could have gone
- 46:08Speaker 4: in an interesting direction. Like I thought it could have really.
- 46:11Speaker 4: I was like, yeah, I like that they're doing this.
- 46:13Speaker 4: But the fact that it didn't pay off for me
- 46:15Speaker 4: like they didn't.
- 46:16Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 46:17Speaker 4: I mean, maybe like maybe if there was a shot
- 46:19Speaker 4: at the end where she's just. I mean, I guess
- 46:21Speaker 4: you just assume she's just done with heroin forever. I
- 46:24Speaker 4: don't know how you finish that plot line. I'm pretty
- 46:28Speaker 4: sure that's when you start doing heroin.
- 46:31Speaker 1: I would go straight back to it. I'm like, yeah.
- 46:35Speaker 6: For me, it's like if you're possessed by a demon,
- 46:38Speaker 6: you don't really worry about the detox anymore. You've got
- 46:40Speaker 6: bigger problems on your hands. So for me, that wasn't
- 46:43Speaker 6: even an issue that it went away. To me, there
- 46:45Speaker 6: was a much bigger issue that came about. But what
- 46:47Speaker 6: I thought was like, kind of amazing the way they
- 46:50Speaker 6: put it in there was the fact that it gave
- 46:52Speaker 6: them this way to make the plot escalate and to
- 46:56Speaker 6: make everything get worse and worse and worse without actually
- 46:59Speaker 6: going what the hell's going on like you didn't have
- 47:02Speaker 6: to ask that question of is this supernatural because it
- 47:06Speaker 6: like the horrible things that go on during drug use
- 47:10Speaker 6: and detox and all of this are so evil in
- 47:13Speaker 6: and of themselves that like that is the evil. And
- 47:16Speaker 6: they're buying into all of that, that they're like, okay,
- 47:19Speaker 6: she really looks this bad because of that. She's throwing
- 47:22Speaker 6: herself into walls because of that. She's saying these things
- 47:25Speaker 6: because she's coming off the drugs. And like, it lets
- 47:27Speaker 6: it escalate well into the movie where normally you'd have
- 47:30Speaker 6: to have this stupid conversation of like, why is she
- 47:33Speaker 6: doing this? And it doesn't force you to do that.
- 47:36Speaker 6: It lets it slowly sort of escalate to the point where, okay,
- 47:40Speaker 6: now she's so far gone. She is, yeah, I mean,
- 47:43Speaker 6: There's nothing you can do at that point. She's already
- 47:45Speaker 6: killing people by the time they realize, oh wait, she's
- 47:48Speaker 6: not on drugs anymore. That was my favorite part, was
- 47:51Speaker 6: the fact that it just sort of let it progress
- 47:54Speaker 6: that way. That you didn't have to play that horror movie,
- 47:57Speaker 6: something's going on thing.
- 47:59Speaker 4: And I know a lot of my critics, most of
- 48:02Speaker 4: my problems with it have been because just me comparing
- 48:05Speaker 4: it to the original, but... as a movie on its own,
- 48:09Speaker 4: like it, like I said, it does like work. It's bad.
- 48:12Speaker 4: It's definitely better than like most of the really, really
- 48:15Speaker 4: bad horror remakes that we've had in the last couple
- 48:17Speaker 4: of years. That's, that's for sure. But decade or more,
- 48:21Speaker 4: it just, it just never really like, I thought that
- 48:23Speaker 4: it was going to have this like really amazing, crazy,
- 48:25Speaker 4: just bat shit. Like we were going to see some
- 48:27Speaker 4: really wild, like demonic monsters or something was going to
- 48:30Speaker 4: happen in the final act. That's kind of the sense
- 48:32Speaker 4: I was like hoping for. Like, this movie was going
- 48:35Speaker 4: to go into places you wouldn't expect. And it never
- 48:37Speaker 4: really went to that next level. Like, you know, the
- 48:41Speaker 4: final scene where like the, the, the demon person is
- 48:45Speaker 4: summoned up from under the ground, like, Oh shit, here's
- 48:47Speaker 4: going to be this crazy, like, you know, Mott skeleton
- 48:50Speaker 4: or some kind of crazy, like demonic thing that's going
- 48:53Speaker 4: to attack her. And, you know, it's going to get
- 48:55Speaker 4: really scary or really, you know, nuts, but, It was
- 48:59Speaker 4: just this, I thought like, is that just one of
- 49:01Speaker 4: the possessed friends? Who is, it just looked like a
- 49:03Speaker 4: person like came out of the ground. It was just
- 49:05Speaker 4: like an Amazon. It was just like, yeah, it was like,
- 49:06Speaker 4: it was like something out of the ring. I was like,
- 49:09Speaker 4: that was kind of underwhelming. I was like, okay. And
- 49:12Speaker 4: the blood rain was cool. Like I liked that a lot,
- 49:15Speaker 4: but it just, at that point it became clear to me,
- 49:19Speaker 4: like by the end, I was like, this movie is
- 49:20Speaker 4: not about demonic possession. It's about closeups of people like
- 49:26Speaker 4: having their arms and hands torn off and stuff, which
- 49:30Speaker 4: was only a small kind of really when you think
- 49:31Speaker 4: about it, that was only a small aspect of the
- 49:35Speaker 4: original films.
- 49:36Speaker 6: I mean, that is a lot of this movie. It
- 49:38Speaker 6: does become sort of a focus is each person kind
- 49:41Speaker 6: of gets the most gruesome way to go out. But
- 49:44Speaker 6: isn't that horror movies? Like, isn't that what almost all
- 49:46Speaker 6: of them have become at this point? Is like, what
- 49:49Speaker 6: new way can we find to kill somebody?
- 49:50Speaker 4: A better two-word title for this movie instead of Evil
- 49:52Speaker 4: Dead would just have been self-mutilation. I mean, it's more accurate.
- 49:57Speaker 4: The people who get possessed aren't really dead, so it's
- 49:59Speaker 4: not like they're zombies. So that's not even... But that's
- 50:02Speaker 4: true of the original. I don't know. I mean, it's...
- 50:04Speaker 4: Just the focus was, for me as a person, it
- 50:08Speaker 4: just felt like the focus was on all the wrong things,
- 50:11Speaker 4: I guess, is the best way for me to sum.
- 50:13Speaker 1: Well, I kind of think, too, because if we're talking
- 50:16Speaker 1: about the remake, because of the cult that has built
- 50:20Speaker 1: up around these movies, if the original version of Evil
- 50:25Speaker 1: Dead came out today exactly as how it was made
- 50:28Speaker 1: in the early 80s, I think the majority of the
- 50:31Speaker 1: people sitting at this table, myself.
- 50:33Speaker 4: Included, probably would be like, what is this piece of shit? Exactly.
- 50:36Speaker 11: Well, of course.
- 50:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:39Speaker 1: So, you know, for my, for, for just dumb mindless entertainment,
- 50:43Speaker 1: you know, I, I enjoyed the movie. I, yeah.
- 50:45Speaker 4: But you could say the same thing about any like
- 50:48Speaker 4: old classic movie that, you know, you know what I mean? Cause,
- 50:50Speaker 4: cause it's the time, you know, with the, just the
- 50:52Speaker 4: technology and the, what movies have been made up until
- 50:55Speaker 4: that point, you know, um, also the reason you if
- 50:59Speaker 4: we were to see the original evil dead now we
- 51:00Speaker 4: would think it'd be all because we'd be like we've
- 51:02Speaker 4: seen this before right when that came out it hadn't
- 51:04Speaker 4: been done before so it's a lot of it a
- 51:07Speaker 4: lot of you know you have to give credit to
- 51:08Speaker 4: the you know a movie that breaks ground you know
- 51:11Speaker 4: does something new and you know the first evil dead
- 51:14Speaker 4: was really audacious in terms of just how visceral and
- 51:18Speaker 4: crazy it was for a whole like most horror movies
- 51:20Speaker 4: just really i mean they didn't dare to just have
- 51:24Speaker 4: that straight up kind of just visceral violence like that
- 51:27Speaker 4: kind of in your face right sensibility up until that
- 51:30Speaker 4: point and that's why it was so awesome but i
- 51:33Speaker 4: mean yeah i mean as i guess yeah and this
- 51:37Speaker 4: movie is it does is a good kind of like
- 51:40Speaker 4: b movie gore fest you know that for that it
- 51:45Speaker 4: is definitely a quote-unquote gore fest for sure.
- 51:47Speaker 6: But it is it just wasn't it it.
- 51:50Speaker 4: I say this like I'm this rabid Evil Dead fan.
- 51:54Speaker 4: People are like, does it earn the title of Evil Dead?
- 51:56Speaker 4: But if I had to say so, it doesn't quite...
- 51:59Speaker 4: It just wasn't quite an Evil Dead movie. It was
- 52:02Speaker 4: more of the self-mutilation kind of torture. It wasn't quite
- 52:07Speaker 4: torture porn. It wasn't on that level, which I hate.
- 52:09Speaker 4: It didn't go there, but it teased with that too much.
- 52:15Speaker 6: I like what it... Did? It's one of those I
- 52:18Speaker 6: think it does kind of work as the Gorefest thing,
- 52:21Speaker 6: and as new remakes go, it's definitely more solid than
- 52:24Speaker 6: most of the other things that have come out that
- 52:26Speaker 6: are just bad knockoff versions using the title of the
- 52:30Speaker 6: previous ones. But I think it doesn't do what that
- 52:34Speaker 6: first one did. I think when I saw the first
- 52:37Speaker 6: Evil Dead, I was not prepared for it. And I
- 52:42Speaker 6: think that's why I still... hold that one in a
- 52:45Speaker 6: whole different area than the other two. The other two
- 52:48Speaker 6: are silly and, and I like them a lot, but
- 52:51Speaker 6: they're not the same thing. Like the first evil dead
- 52:53Speaker 6: to me is actually legitimately creepy. Like it is, it's
- 52:58Speaker 6: scary in a way that I hadn't seen at that point.
- 53:01Speaker 6: And it does things that I, I don't know. It
- 53:02Speaker 6: was one of those things that I will still to
- 53:05Speaker 6: this day list that at the top of my horror
- 53:08Speaker 6: movie list and not for schlockiness and not for, you know,
- 53:11Speaker 6: fun silliness. just for being creepy, for it legitimately being creepy.
- 53:15Speaker 4: Yeah, something about when the budget's lower and just kind
- 53:19Speaker 4: of a crappy camera or whatever that films the woods,
- 53:22Speaker 4: you feel more like you're in the woods in those
- 53:24Speaker 4: kinds of movies than a higher production movie like this.
- 53:27Speaker 4: You don't get a sense of you really being lost
- 53:29Speaker 4: in the woods like you do with, say, the original
- 53:31Speaker 4: Evil Dead or the Blair Witch Project. And that sense
- 53:35Speaker 4: of atmosphere goes a long way. The original really did
- 53:37Speaker 4: have that kind of... cold sense of like just cold
- 53:41Speaker 4: atmosphere that you're just out in these dark woods by
- 53:44Speaker 4: yourself and that was another thing about the original evil
- 53:47Speaker 4: dead that really worked that i didn't really i just
- 53:49Speaker 4: now kind of thought up but just the sense of
- 53:51Speaker 4: darkness like no one really went out in the woods
- 53:54Speaker 4: at night in this one they kind of stayed in
- 53:56Speaker 4: the cabin i just felt like i haven't seen the
- 53:59Speaker 4: original in a while i didn't watch it but uh
- 54:01Speaker 4: before i saw this one but i felt like there
- 54:04Speaker 4: were more I think there were more scenes where they
- 54:06Speaker 4: were just wandering out in the woods in the original.
- 54:08Speaker 6: That was really scary. And in the second.
- 54:10Speaker 4: At night. Not during the day. There were a lot of, like,
- 54:12Speaker 4: wood scenes during the day in this one. Like, where
- 54:14Speaker 4: there's a bunch of fog and stuff. But as far as, like,
- 54:17Speaker 4: night wood scenes where you just can't see shit, you know? Like, it's, like, realistic. Like,
- 54:21Speaker 4: there's no moonlight. That's just scary.
- 54:23Speaker 6: That's true. There isn't. And I did think that. That
- 54:26Speaker 6: for something that built itself so much on the evil
- 54:29Speaker 6: in the woods, we get the very... Like, that's sort
- 54:32Speaker 6: of her initial thing is, like, that she sort of gets...
- 54:35Speaker 6: attacked in the woods, which they recreate that scene. But
- 54:38Speaker 6: other than that, they really don't go back out in there.
- 54:41Speaker 6: They go to the woodshed and that's about it. It's
- 54:43Speaker 6: like right in front of the cabin as far as
- 54:45Speaker 6: they go after that. So they really do kind of
- 54:47Speaker 6: lose that lost in the woods and the woods itself
- 54:51Speaker 6: is evil and that the presence in the woods is
- 54:55Speaker 6: part of what the evil is and what is attacking
- 54:57Speaker 6: them and what is destroying them as it goes on.
- 55:00Speaker 6: You really don't get that sense in this one.
- 55:03Speaker 18: But.
- 55:05Speaker 6: I think there's still a lot of stuff that it
- 55:06Speaker 6: does relatively well. And I think it also introduces things. Like, again,
- 55:11Speaker 6: I think the drug thing is a new aspect that
- 55:15Speaker 6: kind of needed to be there. The other one is
- 55:17Speaker 6: I like that at one point they question the evil
- 55:21Speaker 6: as a virus. So in a world where we are
- 55:24Speaker 6: nothing but overrun with outbreak movies and zombie movies where
- 55:29Speaker 6: everything is sort of put in that context now, it's like,
- 55:33Speaker 6: it almost seems rational for a second. You're like, well, wait, okay.
- 55:36Speaker 6: There was blood here. Like you actually do start doing
- 55:38Speaker 6: the math and going, is that plausible?
- 55:40Speaker 15: Hold on.
- 55:41Speaker 6: So, I mean, it's not, but it.
- 55:43Speaker 4: Is kind of interesting.
- 55:44Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 55:44Speaker 4: Like this one was kind of like, it was like
- 55:46Speaker 4: the sense the evil was more in like a medical sense.
- 55:49Speaker 4: Like it was this virus that was spread around the
- 55:51Speaker 4: cabin and like they all caught it. Like in the original,
- 55:53Speaker 4: it was kind of like the book was this, was
- 55:55Speaker 4: the heart of evil. Like you had to destroy the
- 55:57Speaker 4: book to destroy everything. And, This one, it wasn't so
- 56:00Speaker 4: much the case, but that was kind of interesting because
- 56:03Speaker 4: it just felt more like evil was a disease that
- 56:06Speaker 4: everyone caught. Like she got bit in the hand.
- 56:09Speaker 6: It really did sort of follow that.
- 56:12Speaker 4: I like that that was interesting. That was a new
- 56:16Speaker 4: way to kind of do that.
- 56:18Speaker 11: I have a plot question because I didn't fully understand
- 56:23Speaker 11: the five souls, and I'm not awesome at math, but
- 56:27Speaker 11: I can count to five. Okay.
- 56:29Speaker 15: The dog.
- 56:30Speaker 1: Well, yes, but.
- 56:31Speaker 4: The dog, David. That was my.
- 56:34Speaker 11: I thought about the dog.
- 56:35Speaker 14: Okay, sorry.
- 56:35Speaker 1: I won't interrupt you. The registered nurse, Eric, and then
- 56:42Speaker 1: David's girlfriend. So that makes five.
- 56:44Speaker 6: I wasn't even counting the dog. Good question.
- 56:46Speaker 11: So that's what I thought when I walked out. I
- 56:48Speaker 11: was like, well, there was the dog. But then all
- 56:50Speaker 11: of the other ones come back. Why wasn't there like
- 56:52Speaker 11: an evil dog that came back?
- 56:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I did question that too. It's where did he go?
- 56:58Speaker 1: Because you see, we've just given away a lot of
- 57:02Speaker 1: the movie right now.
- 57:04Speaker 6: They should have already seen it.
- 57:05Speaker 4: It's their own fault. He doesn't have as much fun
- 57:07Speaker 4: with the dog. He's like, ah, this is lame. You
- 57:09Speaker 4: see the dog dying.
- 57:11Speaker 1: And then that's it. He's never resurrected. I think David
- 57:16Speaker 1: may have buried him, or at least they alluded to that,
- 57:19Speaker 1: or something.
- 57:21Speaker 6: See, I wasn't even counting the dog. And David kills himself. Well,
- 57:24Speaker 6: not that I don't think dogs have souls, because I do.
- 57:27Speaker 4: They all go to heaven.
- 57:28Speaker 6: That's right. But I wasn't even counting that. I was
- 57:31Speaker 6: counting her as the last body, because she dies.
- 57:34Speaker 11: But then she doesn't.
- 57:37Speaker 4: He brings her back to life. It doesn't mean she
- 57:39Speaker 4: didn't die.
- 57:39Speaker 11: But she still has her soul.
- 57:40Speaker 3: She can talk still.
- 57:41Speaker 4: He doesn't have her soul.
- 57:42Speaker 6: Does she? Does she?
- 57:44Speaker 4: But I don't understand.
- 57:45Speaker 11: I mean, David killed himself.
- 57:47Speaker 4: Right.
- 57:47Speaker 3: So why?
- 57:48Speaker 11: I mean, just if anybody in the world dies, five people,
- 57:51Speaker 11: then I get to come back up?
- 57:53Speaker 4: It just didn't make sense to me.
- 57:54Speaker 6: I thought it was silly.
- 57:54Speaker 1: I'm trying to remember. I think he, because he was
- 57:57Speaker 1: attacked at the end of the movie, basically.
- 58:00Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 58:01Speaker 1: And, I mean, yeah, it's a bit of a stretch because,
- 58:04Speaker 1: you know, you would have had to assume that he was,
- 58:06Speaker 1: at some point, he was dying with all the, you know,
- 58:08Speaker 1: the nails that were in him. What else happened to
- 58:11Speaker 1: that poor bastard?
- 58:12Speaker 11: Got stabbed in the neck.
- 58:14Speaker 1: Everybody in that movie, you know, except for the nurse,
- 58:18Speaker 1: she was the only one who had a pretty clean death.
- 58:20Speaker 4: Yeah, and I didn't understand. Her death was horrible.
- 58:22Speaker 6: Her death was horrible. Sort of quick.
- 58:25Speaker 1: But, you know, you've got people chopping their arms off with,
- 58:29Speaker 1: you know, the electric carver. You know, you've got all
- 58:35Speaker 1: this stuff going on.
- 58:36Speaker 4: I gave her a sedative, so she should be up
- 58:40Speaker 4: for a couple of hours. We should have left when
- 58:42Speaker 4: Mia wanted to.
- 58:43Speaker 15: Baby, please. Okay, let's not lose our heads.
- 58:46Speaker 11: Okay?
- 58:46Speaker 4: With any luck, it'll stop raining in a couple of hours.
- 58:49Speaker 4: And we'll be able to cross the creek in the
- 58:51Speaker 4: morning and we'll take her to a hospital.
- 58:52Speaker 3: Mia?
- 58:52Speaker 4: Mia?
- 58:53Speaker 11: Mia?
- 58:53Speaker 4: Mia, put the gun down.
- 59:08Speaker 6: Mia?
- 59:09Speaker 4: Mia, put the gun down. Put the gun down, please.
- 59:12Speaker 4: I'll die!
- 59:34Speaker 14: You are all going to die tonight. I don't know.
- 59:36Speaker 11: I felt like the movie was trying so hard to
- 59:39Speaker 11: be serious, but then when it was shitty, it would
- 59:43Speaker 11: just be like, well, this is campy. We're evil dead.
- 59:46Speaker 4: Yeah, it tried to go the campy route in random scenes,
- 59:50Speaker 4: and it didn't really get laughs. Scenes like these one-liners,
- 59:54Speaker 4: I was supposed to have laughs. Where Mia gets possessed
- 59:59Speaker 4: and she says some pretty crazy shit. I thought it
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: was funny. I laughed, but at the same time it
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: was kind of out of place with the tone of
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: everything before it.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: I thought the funniest shot in the movie, and I
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: think it was supposed to be funny. No, the funniest
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: shot that nobody in the theater laughed at at all.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: I mean, I chuckled a little. he's trying to, David's
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: trying to leave. He gets to the bridge. It's washed out.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: And clearly right there in the foreground is that sign
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: that says danger, high water. And to me, I thought
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: it was brilliant, but I think it just kind of
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: passed over.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: That is really funny. I didn't, I didn't catch that.
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: If I had to catch, I would have, yeah, that
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: would have been good. I would have laughed. And yeah,
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: there was just, yeah, I felt the same way too.
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: Like I was laughing at the parts that no one,
- 1:00:46Speaker 4: like it was just little stuff. Like, It's just the
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: fact that they kept using duct tape. By the third time,
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: they kept using duct tape. That made me laugh, too.
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: That made me laugh.
- 1:00:55Speaker 6: I do that. I tape myself back together all the
- 1:00:58Speaker 6: damn time.
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: Here's what it was. He was like, here, hold this.
- 1:01:02Speaker 18: He has this gaping wound in his chest, probably in
- 1:01:06Speaker 18: his aorta.
- 1:01:06Speaker 6: He's like, here, hold this.
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: It was just funny that he kept making him do it.
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: His first command before asking for anything else, he's trying
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: to stop the wind. He's like, give this man some sugar.
- 1:01:15Speaker 6: It's like, what?
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: Did anyone else catch that? He needs water. He needs
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: water and sugar. Yeah, I was wondering.
- 1:01:21Speaker 6: He said, like, get him some sugar.
- 1:01:22Speaker 4: I'm just like, okay.
- 1:01:23Speaker 18: Because he's obviously part hummingbird.
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: But that's all I can think of is hummingbird food.
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: But yeah.
- 1:01:30Speaker 11: Yeah, like at the end where the demon's coming after
- 1:01:33Speaker 11: her and she goes into the shed and she has
- 1:01:36Speaker 11: to fill up the chainsaw with the gasoline. And the demon,
- 1:01:40Speaker 11: I guess, is just waiting in the tunnel for.
- 1:01:43Speaker 6: Her to get done filling it.
- 1:01:45Speaker 11: And it's just like those moments are so lazy. It
- 1:01:47Speaker 11: was just like, really? I don't know.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: Well, the demon was going to give her a sporting chance.
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: It's like, come on. Okay, she's going for the chainsaw.
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: Let's see what she does.
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: There were a couple of things I thought were... a
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: bit obvious. Like they had the trap door in the, uh,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: in the shed that led to the tunnel where, you know,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: they find the dog.
- 1:02:04Speaker 6: Which again, why would that really be there?
- 1:02:06Speaker 11: Right.
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 1:02:07Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:02:07Speaker 6: I didn't understand why we just, we get that it's there,
- 1:02:10Speaker 6: but yeah, but I don't know. I think that's, it's
- 1:02:13Speaker 6: one of those things you're going in and you already
- 1:02:14Speaker 6: kind of know those key moments that they almost have
- 1:02:18Speaker 6: to work in or people are going to complain. Um,
- 1:02:20Speaker 6: But at the same time, the one thing I'll give
- 1:02:23Speaker 6: them credit for is they don't do it by the book.
- 1:02:25Speaker 6: They find a way to hit those moments, but do
- 1:02:28Speaker 6: it kind of differently. They change it up just enough
- 1:02:31Speaker 6: that you're like, okay, well, that's not what I thought
- 1:02:33Speaker 6: was coming, and then they'll still find a way to
- 1:02:35Speaker 6: do it. That's more credit than I expected going in
- 1:02:39Speaker 6: with a remake like this.
- 1:02:40Speaker 11: I just don't think... It seems like the only time
- 1:02:43Speaker 11: you should ever remake a film is if it's a
- 1:02:46Speaker 11: good film that has plot points that don't work that
- 1:02:49Speaker 11: you can correct. And I feel like they, instead of
- 1:02:53Speaker 11: doing that, just made more complicated plot points that didn't work.
- 1:02:57Speaker 11: I mean, the actual mythology of the thing didn't work
- 1:03:00Speaker 11: in its own universe. I just didn't see the point.
- 1:03:04Speaker 6: Yeah. Done.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: I definitely agree. I don't think this was a movie
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: that needed to be remade. But given the source material and, again,
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: the way it's been built up over the years, I
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: think they did a decent job at it.
- 1:03:19Speaker 6: I think they did as best that they could do,
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: but it's one of those... There's so much apologizing for
- 1:03:25Speaker 6: this movie. Really, I felt bad for the guy because
- 1:03:27Speaker 6: I think visually it looks good and they did great
- 1:03:29Speaker 6: special effects, but think how much the deck is stacked
- 1:03:32Speaker 6: against you going into this. Not only are there three
- 1:03:36Speaker 6: movies that are huge, just in three movies they built
- 1:03:40Speaker 6: a franchise that is as big as damn near any
- 1:03:43Speaker 6: franchise out there. And on top of that, then you
- 1:03:46Speaker 6: get that fan expectations going in. So you've got that
- 1:03:50Speaker 6: stacked against you. Then you've got, like, the fact that
- 1:03:53Speaker 6: the movies themselves change within the trilogy. Like, they become
- 1:03:57Speaker 6: an out-and-out comedy as they go on. So now you're like, okay, wait,
- 1:04:01Speaker 6: do I stick with this? Or do I have to
- 1:04:03Speaker 6: do the comedy or are they going to get mad?
- 1:04:05Speaker 6: And then on top of that, they make a musical
- 1:04:08Speaker 6: out of your fucking story that, like... is now equally
- 1:04:12Speaker 6: as popular and touring the country that they're singing songs
- 1:04:15Speaker 6: about it and they're throwing blood all over the audience
- 1:04:18Speaker 6: and it's all a joke. And then, as if that
- 1:04:22Speaker 6: all wasn't enough, in the last couple of years, they
- 1:04:25Speaker 6: make a movie that the entire point is to completely
- 1:04:28Speaker 6: just dissect and take apart the basics of this story.
- 1:04:33Speaker 6: That everything is supposed to be decoded by this movie
- 1:04:37Speaker 6: that sets everything up almost exactly as the movie you
- 1:04:39Speaker 6: now have to make. That guy was screwed going in.
- 1:04:42Speaker 6: I'm just like, how could you make... What do you
- 1:04:44Speaker 6: do with that story after all of that has come
- 1:04:47Speaker 6: before you other than don't make this movie?
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I think if I were a screenwriter or director
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: and were handed this assignment, I would probably have a
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: nervous breakdown.
- 1:04:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: I mean, there's so much to live up to there.
- 1:05:02Speaker 6: And again, just the fact that they just did Cabin
- 1:05:05Speaker 6: in the Woods and the entire purpose of that is
- 1:05:08Speaker 6: setting up this same scenario and then... taking a very
- 1:05:12Speaker 6: specific look at it, really trying to break it down.
- 1:05:14Speaker 6: And now you're not supposed to do that. You're just
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: supposed to go, and then it gets scary. I mean,
- 1:05:18Speaker 6: you can't take that because they already did that. So
- 1:05:21Speaker 6: you can't, all you have to do is be sort
- 1:05:22Speaker 6: of earnest about it and go, well, she's possessed. Like,
- 1:05:26Speaker 6: I don't know. Like I just give him credit for
- 1:05:28Speaker 6: the fact that he makes it kind of work as
- 1:05:32Speaker 6: best as he could. It's not great, but it's pretty
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: solid for what it is to me. And if we're
- 1:05:38Speaker 6: going into the gore fest and, They tried to be
- 1:05:41Speaker 6: completely CG-free. I appreciated that possibly more than anything in
- 1:05:45Speaker 6: the movie.
- 1:05:46Speaker 4: Well, okay, here's the thing. I do appreciate that as well.
- 1:05:48Speaker 4: I was very impressed with how everything was practical. But
- 1:05:52Speaker 4: I think there is a little bit of over-appraisal in
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: this whole it's CGI-free because there's plenty of horror movies
- 1:05:58Speaker 4: out right now that not all horror movies are strictly
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: using CGI blood. I remember the real shitty Texas Chainsaw
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: remake that came out. That didn't have any CGI stuff
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: in it. Neither did the sequel... Or the remake of
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: Hills Have Eyes. It's not like it's this new thing
- 1:06:14Speaker 4: that they're using real blood. So I didn't know why
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: they were saying this movie was so great for that.
- 1:06:21Speaker 6: I mean, a lot of the smaller budget stuff, they
- 1:06:24Speaker 6: build themselves on that. Well, no, not even that. A
- 1:06:27Speaker 6: lot of the guys at conventions, everybody in that area
- 1:06:30Speaker 6: hates CGI. So the really indie directors... Are using real blood.
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: In practical effects. I feel like when I was reading
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: all the reviews, they were like, oh, practical, it's crazy.
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: I was thinking, okay, if you're that impressed by practical effects,
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: this movie must be dead alive gore. It must be
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: this showy, operatic.
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: Just like bloodbath but it wasn't really that it was
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: moments i feel like it was maybe i mean it
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: wasn't it didn't it wasn't cartoony enough for me to
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: be like fun dead alive gory it was.
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: More she vomited on the nurse was.
- 1:07:00Speaker 19: That was the one moment that was actually the one
- 1:07:02Speaker 19: moment where i was like okay i saw because i
- 1:07:04Speaker 19: saw that in the trailer i was like oh wow
- 1:07:06Speaker 19: this could be pretty crazy and then it turned out
- 1:07:09Speaker 19: to be just the kind of grimy kind of self-mutilation
- 1:07:12Speaker 19: kind of deal Which.
- 1:07:13Speaker 6: I kind of like just because, again, the way that
- 1:07:16Speaker 6: the evil was, it was using them against themselves.
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: It didn't even have to do the work half the time.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: But the chainsaw through the mouth was awesome, I'll say that.
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: I mean, that was crazy.
- 1:07:26Speaker 6: That was a great finale. Again, I like the nurse thing.
- 1:07:30Speaker 6: I think it's horrible, but it's one of those that
- 1:07:33Speaker 6: that effect was good and just the setup of her.
- 1:07:38Speaker 6: sitting there doing that to herself as he comes over
- 1:07:40Speaker 6: is kind of creepy it was one of the more
- 1:07:42Speaker 6: creepy moments in the movie.
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: Yeah and what made that also that shot of the
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: chainsaw through the mouth like bet like way better than
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: what they like they how they would have done it
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: say in the like i keep saying that takes a
- 1:07:53Speaker 4: chance on remake but that's the only you know any
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: of the horror remakes that maybe would have done that
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: also it's like they made it a wide shot like
- 1:08:00Speaker 4: they took it to its most extreme so you saw
- 1:08:02Speaker 4: like The body just flailing back and forth. You weren't
- 1:08:06Speaker 4: missing anything. You saw the profile view. The literal, this
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: chainsaw is going through this body. It just felt kind
- 1:08:13Speaker 4: of humorous the way they did that. I liked the
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: way that Fede shot that.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: Particularly gorse the first couple seconds of that shot i
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: was like what the hell just happened and then then
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: it kind of sinks in and you're like wow you
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: know wow that's it was it was an awesome kill
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: don't see very often.
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: It might i mean i it still might i mean
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: it could be the you know the best kill for
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: 2013 i would definitely i would put it on my
- 1:08:39Speaker 4: list it was pretty crazy Well, I think.
- 1:08:41Speaker 6: Again, I think just the way that he does the
- 1:08:44Speaker 6: gore is pretty good. But even just the way that
- 1:08:46Speaker 6: it looks, like it's a very specific thing. Like you
- 1:08:50Speaker 6: couldn't get more wood grain in a movie.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:08:53Speaker 6: It is just wood on wood. Like it is almost
- 1:08:56Speaker 6: like perverse how much they invest them. in the wood
- 1:09:01Speaker 6: and the fact that they're in this cabin and everything,
- 1:09:04Speaker 6: like just the way that it's, everything looked about it was,
- 1:09:08Speaker 6: I mean, like it's not by accident. Like he went
- 1:09:10Speaker 6: out of his way to give it this very specific look.
- 1:09:13Speaker 6: And I think it, it works because it's, it's almost
- 1:09:17Speaker 6: obvious that it's, it's made to look that way.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: I will say it did seem like there were a
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: lot more rooms.
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: The cabin was definitely bigger on the inside than it
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: was on the exterior.
- 1:09:26Speaker 6: The old one was like that too.
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: The old one definitely had all these back rooms. I
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: was like, what? It seems like when you go look
- 1:09:34Speaker 4: at that cabin, it should just be that one room
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: that they walked through. That's it.
- 1:09:37Speaker 6: Which is kind of the fun of it.
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:09:40Speaker 6: The fact that, especially once you get into the cabin
- 1:09:42Speaker 6: in the woods, that it really goes all.
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: A lot of haunted house movies are like that too.
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: I think that's just a thing.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: And they also kind of put in a couple places,
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: you know, props in the background that were like a
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: nod to the original series, which normally I kind of
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: think is kind of, kind of silly, kind of cheesy,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: but they're subtle. I like, but they were, they were
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: pretty subtle.
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: And there were a few, there were a couple of.
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: Times where they'd show the same thing four or five
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: times and finally be like, Oh yeah, yeah, that was
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: so I did like that.
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: But it also works in that, you mentioned there is
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: a mythology to it, and it almost uses that to
- 1:10:16Speaker 6: its advantage when setting things up. You know something's coming.
- 1:10:21Speaker 6: Because you have so much built into this history with
- 1:10:24Speaker 6: the series that when you see the shotgun sitting there,
- 1:10:27Speaker 6: you're like, well, there you go. You already have things
- 1:10:31Speaker 6: going through your mind. Shotgun, chainsaw.
- 1:10:33Speaker 14: Shotgun, chainsaw.
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: You've already got all of this. But even like some
- 1:10:37Speaker 6: of the other stuff, just like as it goes along,
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: it's got such a mythology built into this series that
- 1:10:43Speaker 6: in one way I think you're right that it doesn't
- 1:10:45Speaker 6: do it the same deadite way it did the first time.
- 1:10:47Speaker 6: But it does it in a way that, again, for
- 1:10:50Speaker 6: me almost delivers in a way that's different. And maybe
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: he is taking it in a different direction and maybe
- 1:10:57Speaker 6: obviously they're setting it up to do another one. And
- 1:10:59Speaker 6: it did pretty well this weekend, so they're probably going
- 1:11:01Speaker 6: to get greenlit to do another one. So I would
- 1:11:04Speaker 6: be interested to see if he continues and does his
- 1:11:07Speaker 6: own thing in another movie, assuming they give it to
- 1:11:09Speaker 6: him again. Or, I don't know, if it just becomes
- 1:11:12Speaker 6: another hacky series and just gets a bad sequel.
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: I mean, they definitely really are. I mean, from the ending,
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: it just seemed just perfectly clear to me. They're making
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: her into the new Ash. I mean, they severed her hand.
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: They had the close-up like, okay, she has the chainsaw.
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: She doesn't have a hand anymore. Evil Dead 2, she's
- 1:11:29Speaker 4: going to be like the new Ash, and that was
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: pretty cool. So despite my disappointment in this one, I
- 1:11:33Speaker 4: am kind of excited to see where they take that.
- 1:11:35Speaker 18: It's kind of funny because I was thinking the same thing.
- 1:11:38Speaker 18: I was like, okay, so yeah, I wasn't too crazy
- 1:11:41Speaker 18: about this one, but I did think that was really
- 1:11:43Speaker 18: cool that they made her the new Ash. So it'll
- 1:11:46Speaker 18: be interesting.
- 1:11:47Speaker 6: Which I thought that's what they were doing when they
- 1:11:49Speaker 6: started setting up the cast. I thought they were just
- 1:11:51Speaker 6: recasting Ash from the beginning. Right. Changing him to female,
- 1:11:56Speaker 6: making it a very different setup so they didn't have
- 1:11:58Speaker 6: to follow the old plot very closely. But they kind
- 1:12:01Speaker 6: of just switched it up on you. That David's the
- 1:12:04Speaker 6: Ash through most of the movie and then she comes
- 1:12:07Speaker 6: back and becomes Ash.
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: She was, honestly, she was the character I least expected
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: to survive the movie. Even at the end where it
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: looks like, well, maybe, you know. And for a second there,
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: I thought, okay, this is going to get silly because
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: there's no chance of her coming back. But I do
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: feel like in the confines of what they were doing,
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: they did make that work. They made it, I don't
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: want to say believable, but somewhat plausible.
- 1:12:33Speaker 6: They set it up plot-wise. They were like, just don't
- 1:12:36Speaker 6: ever leave me. And they really did. If they hadn't
- 1:12:38Speaker 6: put that in there, it might have seemed random. But
- 1:12:40Speaker 6: it's like, once again, no, this was all orchestrated. It's
- 1:12:43Speaker 6: very obvious he's got to do that to make this
- 1:12:45Speaker 6: kind of work. And then to have her take, you know,
- 1:12:49Speaker 6: to balance out the big finale there. So it kind
- 1:12:51Speaker 6: of had to end that way.
- 1:12:53Speaker 3: Listen, you've got to get out of those clothes.
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: You have to get me out of here. Yeah, look,
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: nobody said this was going to be easy.
- 1:13:07Speaker 3: You don't understand.
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: There was something in the woods, David.
- 1:13:12Speaker 11: David.
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: I don't know and i'm just so impressed with her
- 1:13:28Speaker 6: like i again it's i don't watch much sitcom wise
- 1:13:31Speaker 6: but i've bothered to start watching that because she's so
- 1:13:35Speaker 6: good on her cheesy sitcom and it's pretty good actually
- 1:13:37Speaker 6: as sitcoms go but um what the hell is the
- 1:13:41Speaker 6: name of that thing suburgatory yeah suburgatory and um i
- 1:13:44Speaker 6: mean she's she kind of makes it like I think
- 1:13:48Speaker 6: that's the only reason it works. Everybody else on the show,
- 1:13:52Speaker 6: even the dad, they're all decent, but I think it
- 1:13:55Speaker 6: would just be sort of run-of-the-mill, and she sort of
- 1:13:57Speaker 6: elevates that. But again, that's a very sitcom world. So
- 1:14:00Speaker 6: when she got cast in this, I was like, what
- 1:14:03Speaker 6: the hell are they doing? I like her, but that
- 1:14:05Speaker 6: seems like miscasting. I totally buy her in the beginning
- 1:14:09Speaker 6: as the messed-up drug girl. I like her as the
- 1:14:12Speaker 6: sort of medium-level shit's going wrong, and I'm going to
- 1:14:15Speaker 6: screw everybody over just to get out of here. And
- 1:14:17Speaker 6: by the time she's evil, she is creepy as hell. She, again,
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: as the rest of the cast, you can kind of
- 1:14:24Speaker 6: take them or leave them, but she kind of proved
- 1:14:26Speaker 6: herself for me. I think she's really good in this.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: What I liked about her performance was she was creepy
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: with minimal makeup. I mean, yeah, they made her dirty.
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: They darked out her teeth, put contacts in her. But
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: her performance still came through as she was just terrifying.
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: You know, she was... Just something you wouldn't want to
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: run into, basically.
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: Which is how that first one was. That was one
- 1:14:50Speaker 6: of the creepiest things in that first movie was the
- 1:14:53Speaker 6: whole cellar setup and her being trapped there and still
- 1:14:58Speaker 6: talking to them. That's what made that so creepy, I think.
- 1:15:02Speaker 6: The closest thing they get to this, I guess, is
- 1:15:04Speaker 6: her performance. I think that's probably the best they get
- 1:15:07Speaker 6: as far as being as creepy as they tried to
- 1:15:09Speaker 6: do the first time around. I agree.
- 1:15:12Speaker 11: I liked her performance. I'm trying to say something nice
- 1:15:14Speaker 11: about every movie now, and I really liked her performance
- 1:15:17Speaker 11: a lot. The scene where she's telling her brother and
- 1:15:20Speaker 11: she's sitting on the bottom of the bunk bed, I mean,
- 1:15:21Speaker 11: she's scary as hell in that. I didn't really care
- 1:15:26Speaker 11: about the Diablo Cody girl power gender reversal thing at
- 1:15:30Speaker 11: the end. It kind of made me roll my eyes.
- 1:15:32Speaker 11: But if anybody is going to survive this cast and
- 1:15:35Speaker 11: be in the next film, I am glad it's her
- 1:15:36Speaker 11: because she actually could act.
- 1:15:39Speaker 6: Yeah, that's kind of why I was hoping that plan
- 1:15:41Speaker 6: would work of his.
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: Mostly because that means she'll come back. I don't think
- 1:15:44Speaker 4: Diablo Cody... I don't think she wrote the... I think
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: she just punched up. I don't think she had the
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: decision to go in this direction with how the female... Yeah,
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: I would have been literal. Yeah, yeah. Maybe that's what
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: attracted her. In a way, at first I thought I
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: didn't sense very much Diablo Cody in the movie. But
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: now thinking about it, maybe... Like, maybe that line, like,
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: I can maybe... It kind of makes sense, because I
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: saw Jennifer's Body, and it was bad, but... I loved
- 1:16:14Speaker 4: that movie. It was interesting. I wanted to hate it.
- 1:16:19Speaker 11: That was one of those movies I was like, oh,
- 1:16:20Speaker 11: my God, I'm going to hate this.
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: I'm going to enjoy hating it.
- 1:16:22Speaker 6: I was like, no, this.
- 1:16:23Speaker 3: Is actually really good.
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: I might have to watch it again. But after thinking
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: about it, I was like, yeah, you know, I can see, like,
- 1:16:29Speaker 4: the same person did Jennifer's Body. Like, I can see her...
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: I can kind of see her... her presence shining through
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: moments in this movie. It did have a little bit
- 1:16:39Speaker 4: of Diablo Cody. I can't really say how, but I
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: kind of feel it now, the more I think about it.
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: I didn't even realize that she had anything to do
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: with it, and knowing that now, I still don't, I
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: didn't really pick up on that a whole lot.
- 1:16:53Speaker 6: It doesn't feel like her.
- 1:16:55Speaker 7: Stuff, most of it.
- 1:16:56Speaker 11: I guess the lead actor was on The United States
- 1:16:58Speaker 11: of Terror, so I don't know if, she brought him
- 1:17:00Speaker 11: in or he, I don't know what the situation is,
- 1:17:02Speaker 11: but that seemed unlikely casting too.
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: He was so bad.
- 1:17:05Speaker 9: I mean, he really, he's.
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: Just too weak to carry that movie. And he becomes
- 1:17:10Speaker 6: the main character through most of it.
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: And I wish I get more, you know, hearing it to,
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: you know, this, guy with the chiseled chin and.
- 1:17:20Speaker 6: I really wasn't again that i was keeping pretty separate
- 1:17:23Speaker 6: i was trying to keep because you can't be bruce
- 1:17:25Speaker 6: campbell you just can't you know so it's like i
- 1:17:27Speaker 6: was trying to look at it very separate and almost
- 1:17:29Speaker 6: more of like the way that they do movies now
- 1:17:31Speaker 6: with all the other horror remakes and like i'm like
- 1:17:34Speaker 6: no he's he's still just not really a strong enough
- 1:17:36Speaker 6: character to carry this.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: Movie i don't think he was bad i just think
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: his performance was really really uneven yeah because the times
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: where he seemed To show compassion towards his sister, I
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: thought he did great. But when he had these moments
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: where he had to stand up and take charge, he
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: just kind of fell flat.
- 1:17:52Speaker 6: See, that's the thing. I didn't dislike him overall. I
- 1:17:54Speaker 6: think maybe in other stuff he might be okay. I
- 1:17:56Speaker 6: just didn't think he carried this. Again, when you've got
- 1:18:00Speaker 6: none of them there, I really could have carried the
- 1:18:03Speaker 6: whole group. Yeah, that's a weird group of people.
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:18:07Speaker 6: The girlfriend was a waste of space.
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: She really was.
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: Totally. I kind of.
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:18:12Speaker 11: I felt like that was actually an acting choice that
- 1:18:14Speaker 11: she made because she was so terrible at the beginning
- 1:18:17Speaker 11: and then she was actually really kind of great once
- 1:18:20Speaker 11: she got to like ham it up and then I
- 1:18:21Speaker 11: was like, oh, she knew she was in a campy
- 1:18:23Speaker 11: horror film and she was going to be the disposable
- 1:18:26Speaker 11: blonde girlfriend and then... I didn't hate her also.
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: You remember too.
- 1:18:31Speaker 15: She was kidding.
- 1:18:32Speaker 4: She was.
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: I think she might have had the best line in
- 1:18:34Speaker 4: the movie where she just turns around, her arms fall out.
- 1:18:36Speaker 4: She's like, I feel much better now. That was so great.
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: But yeah, I definitely, yeah, the brother, I wish, I
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: wish they kept him as a weaker, like maybe a
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: more realistic, like, you know, if this, if they just
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: made him a weaker character who would have buckled under
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: all this pressure because he's already dealing with all this
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: whole baggage with you know his sister and her heroine
- 1:18:58Speaker 4: and like their mom and like he probably in real
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: life that kind of guy he probably would just kind
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: of he'd be like i can't handle this shit i
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: can't be the one who i can't immediately be the
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: jock who has to take charge in these moments like
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: that I wish they kind of cut out that kind
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: of sense of the character and maybe given it to
- 1:19:16Speaker 4: the other guy with the beard or something because he
- 1:19:17Speaker 4: was really good.
- 1:19:19Speaker 6: I at least bought that guy. That guy was awesome.
- 1:19:23Speaker 6: He seemed right at home in that role.
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: But I like how he opens the book and it
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: says right on there, leave this book alone.
- 1:19:30Speaker 4: He's like, eh, anyway.
- 1:19:33Speaker 11: Nope.
- 1:19:35Speaker 4: I think I will not. Because we need to have
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: a movie.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: And I did like that he finally owned up to
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: the fact that, hey guys, I screwed this.
- 1:19:44Speaker 15: Up for everybody.
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: Yeah, it wasn't the same where they're like, did you
- 1:19:47Speaker 4: read from the book? He's like, no. He just went
- 1:19:49Speaker 4: to them and was like, look, I read this book.
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: And even then, with everything that was going on, and
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: he was like, this is my fault. I read from
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: this book.
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: They're all just.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: Kind of like, no.
- 1:19:57Speaker 6: I don't think that's it.
- 1:19:59Speaker 4: It wasn't that I outright hated the movie. It was
- 1:20:02Speaker 4: just that I was bored a lot.
- 1:20:04Speaker 6: Is it because you'd seen it before in other movies?
- 1:20:08Speaker 6: I think so.
- 1:20:09Speaker 4: I think that's what it was.
- 1:20:10Speaker 18: And I was just like, okay, it was a gore fest,
- 1:20:14Speaker 18: but even that just seemed boring to me. And I
- 1:20:16Speaker 18: was just like, okay, what does that say about me
- 1:20:18Speaker 18: as a person and the kind of things that I
- 1:20:21Speaker 18: like to watch? Because I don't feel like I watch
- 1:20:24Speaker 18: a lot of gory movies, but I think it's just
- 1:20:29Speaker 18: so expected. I wasn't surprised by anything. And, you know,
- 1:20:35Speaker 18: I didn't watch, you know, the first Evil Dead, you know,
- 1:20:40Speaker 18: before going into it because I did want to, you know,
- 1:20:42Speaker 18: come at it from, you know, just like its own
- 1:20:46Speaker 18: thing and I didn't want to compare it too much.
- 1:20:48Speaker 6: But I don't know.
- 1:20:49Speaker 18: I just, I was just bored, you know, and I
- 1:20:52Speaker 18: was just waiting for something good to happen and it
- 1:20:54Speaker 18: just never did. Like I said, I didn't outright hate it.
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: I just didn't necessarily like it.
- 1:21:00Speaker 6: So in a way that's almost playing into exactly the
- 1:21:03Speaker 6: reason that these keep getting made though. Just the idea of,
- 1:21:06Speaker 6: of I've seen this before is all they're waiting for
- 1:21:09Speaker 6: is the new batch of kids who haven't seen it
- 1:21:12Speaker 6: and aren't going to know the difference. And obviously it
- 1:21:15Speaker 6: worked cause it made a hell of a lot of money.
- 1:21:17Speaker 4: Which for those group of people seeing, uh, some guy
- 1:21:20Speaker 4: at the end of credits, look at them and say groovy.
- 1:21:21Speaker 4: They'll be like, who the fuck was that about? Can
- 1:21:24Speaker 4: you imagine how weird that will be for like people
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: who see that and have no idea like who Ash
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: or what the, They just go into this thing and
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: it's a horror movie and that just shows up at
- 1:21:31Speaker 4: the end. I think that's funny just because they have
- 1:21:34Speaker 4: no idea what that's about.
- 1:21:36Speaker 6: I love Burn Notice.
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: Oh, I do too. I have to say, if I
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: was a 19, 20-year-old kid, had never seen the original
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: Evil Dead, and this came out, and I'd gone to
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: see it and then found out about it, it would
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: at least make me search out the original.
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: Yeah, that's good. I think it's good.
- 1:21:54Speaker 6: Enough to do that.
- 1:21:56Speaker 11: I don't know. I was sitting in front of these
- 1:22:00Speaker 11: people that were discussing these 19-year-old kids that I assume
- 1:22:03Speaker 11: hadn't seen the original, and the girl turned to her boyfriend,
- 1:22:05Speaker 11: and she's like, this really sucks.
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: And he was like, yeah.
- 1:22:09Speaker 11: So I just didn't think it was a good movie. Like,
- 1:22:11Speaker 11: completely divorced from the original. I just didn't think that
- 1:22:15Speaker 11: it had any merit on its own. There were plot holes.
- 1:22:17Speaker 11: It was tedious. I just didn't... There was nothing enjoyable
- 1:22:21Speaker 11: about it for me. But to be fair, I'm not
- 1:22:23Speaker 11: a gore person, so maybe if that was my bag,
- 1:22:25Speaker 11: I'd be all about this.
- 1:22:25Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:22:26Speaker 6: I just don't think it's that weak, really. I don't
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: think it's great. I don't think it's perfect by any means.
- 1:22:33Speaker 6: But it definitely, compared to a lot of other bad
- 1:22:36Speaker 6: mainstream studio-backed horror movies, it's pretty solid.
- 1:22:39Speaker 11: Oh, this is such a depressing metric. I don't want
- 1:22:42Speaker 11: that to be what.
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: This is about. But that's what you have to go.
- 1:22:44Speaker 11: Compared to all the other shit out there, it's not terrible.
- 1:22:46Speaker 4: If you watch a lot of movies, that's the math
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: you have to do, really.
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: I argue that it was a lot better than the
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: Friday the 13th remake.
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: That's not saying too much.
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: Again, the original Friday the 13th 2, not really that
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: good of a movie either, but it has a cult
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: built up around it.
- 1:23:03Speaker 6: Same thing with the Nightmare on Elm Street. I have
- 1:23:06Speaker 6: huge problems with that remake. They missed the point Of
- 1:23:10Speaker 6: not just that movie they're remaking, but horror in general.
- 1:23:13Speaker 6: They kind of missed the point. I mean, it can
- 1:23:16Speaker 6: go really bad when they try to do this.
- 1:23:18Speaker 4: I think these movies, to be well-made, they can only
- 1:23:21Speaker 4: be directed by the person who thought up the concept.
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: Not Friday the 13th needs to be directed by the
- 1:23:27Speaker 4: guy who just thought up the idea of this guy
- 1:23:29Speaker 4: in a sweater who kills you. Because he thought it up.
- 1:23:34Speaker 4: It can't be an imitation of that. Otherwise, it'll just
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: be like this... this music video imitation thing that's never
- 1:23:43Speaker 4: going to be you know i mean like i think
- 1:23:45Speaker 4: this fede alvarez really did he was passionate about what
- 1:23:48Speaker 4: he was doing like i do think he would try
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: really hard and he was trying to make his own
- 1:23:54Speaker 4: stamp on it but at the same time because he's
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: not sam raimi he didn't come up with this wacky
- 1:23:58Speaker 4: well i mean it was wacky in the original it
- 1:24:01Speaker 4: wasn't wacky in this one but like this idea of
- 1:24:03Speaker 4: like this book possessing these people in a cabin and
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: he couldn't be as imaginative with it, no matter how
- 1:24:09Speaker 4: hard he tried. I don't think he could reach that level.
- 1:24:12Speaker 6: Are you thinking that you can't do that with a
- 1:24:15Speaker 6: movie in general? Like, you just can't remake it?
- 1:24:17Speaker 4: I think there are exceptions. There's always exceptions.
- 1:24:19Speaker 6: Because that's what I'm like.
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: No, I mean, like.
- 1:24:20Speaker 6: You can think of so many where they kind of
- 1:24:22Speaker 6: do that.
- 1:24:22Speaker 4: 99% of the time, that's the reason, I think. But, like,
- 1:24:25Speaker 4: you know, with something like The Fly, where the original
- 1:24:27Speaker 4: is just a bad movie, or The Thing, where it's
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: just so hokey. I mean, if you totally take your
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: own imagination to it, and you just... and it's, you know,
- 1:24:38Speaker 4: I feel like if he really wanted to have this
- 1:24:40Speaker 4: version stand out, it had to be way more different
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: from the original than it was.
- 1:24:44Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:24:45Speaker 6: It's not different enough to make it.
- 1:24:47Speaker 4: Yeah, exactly. I mean, separate.
- 1:24:50Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:24:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:24:51Speaker 6: It doesn't revolutionize things the way that evil that did
- 1:24:54Speaker 6: in my mind, like it really did sort of change
- 1:24:56Speaker 6: the game when it came along the original movie, the
- 1:25:00Speaker 6: evil that this one just seems like another one of
- 1:25:03Speaker 6: those horror movies. And that, It's watchable, it's fun, it's
- 1:25:07Speaker 6: decent for what it is, but it doesn't change the
- 1:25:09Speaker 6: game like The Evil Dead did.
- 1:25:11Speaker 11: I think he's reasonably impressive as a director. I don't
- 1:25:13Speaker 11: think he ever needs to write another screenplay as long
- 1:25:15Speaker 11: as he lives. I mean, it just wasn't a good story.
- 1:25:18Speaker 11: And if you bring in an Oscar-winning screenwriter to punch
- 1:25:21Speaker 11: it up and it still sucks.
- 1:25:22Speaker 6: This bad, you're... But he also had never done a
- 1:25:25Speaker 6: feature before. He had done a couple of shorts, and
- 1:25:29Speaker 6: the shorts looked pretty good.
- 1:25:30Speaker 4: Yeah, the new.
- 1:25:31Speaker 6: Director, this is his first feature film. So, I mean, really,
- 1:25:34Speaker 6: to go into this much pressure and have this much
- 1:25:38Speaker 6: budget thrown at you when you've done some, you know,
- 1:25:40Speaker 6: CG-filled robot movie, which was pretty good, actually, for a short. But, again,
- 1:25:45Speaker 6: it's like you can– it was like four or five
- 1:25:47Speaker 6: minutes long, you know, versus trying to do an entire
- 1:25:51Speaker 6: feature film. It's– I think, you know, going into it
- 1:25:54Speaker 6: from nothing– He's pretty impressive. Again, visually, I think he's
- 1:25:58Speaker 6: got style.
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: I think that was a good idea, too, because the
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: original was made by a total amateur. And I don't
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: mean that in a bad way.
- 1:26:08Speaker 6: In the best way, really.
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: Because he had to invent things to get the shots
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: he wanted. And I don't think that was quite the
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: case with the new guy, but I still think some
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: of that spirit was... was almost there. And I think
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: it was a good idea to go with a first time,
- 1:26:26Speaker 1: you know, feature director.
- 1:26:27Speaker 6: And at least, I don't know, because yeah, if you
- 1:26:30Speaker 6: go with somebody very established, they're going to bring an
- 1:26:32Speaker 6: already preconceived thing that exists in their other movies where
- 1:26:37Speaker 6: this does kind of give you, he can kind of
- 1:26:39Speaker 6: do whatever he wants from this point on. And again,
- 1:26:42Speaker 6: I think he could have differed it quite a bit.
- 1:26:45Speaker 6: He could have changed things up even more, but for
- 1:26:48Speaker 6: what it is, it's still, I think it's still pretty
- 1:26:51Speaker 6: enjoyable for, for this type of movie.
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: Well, there were a couple of scenes where if you'd
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: seen the original, you're like, okay, I know what's going
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: to happen now. And it did happen. And then there
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: were a couple of times where it altered slightly, but
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: eventually made its way back to that, for better or worse.
- 1:27:09Speaker 6: I was surprised they kept the tree thing with her.
- 1:27:13Speaker 6: I was really surprised by that. I mean, that was pretty...
- 1:27:16Speaker 6: I was pushing the envelope in the 80s when you
- 1:27:18Speaker 6: could do whatever you wanted, and this one keeps it
- 1:27:21Speaker 6: in there, and Maybe makes it a little more.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: Horrifying, actually. That was pretty intense to see. And I
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: kept thinking, okay, surely they're not going to show the
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: tree raping this girl. And then, sure enough, I'm like,
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: all the way up to the last second, I was like, no,
- 1:27:35Speaker 1: they're going to cut away. But it was probably a
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: little bit more intense.
- 1:27:39Speaker 6: Yeah, I think it was.
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: And it also, like, it.
- 1:27:43Speaker 6: It isn't just it killing her in horrible ways. It
- 1:27:47Speaker 6: is the evil. It takes it kind of to the
- 1:27:50Speaker 6: next level where it really is like that is the
- 1:27:52Speaker 6: evil possessing her in the most horrible way possible.
- 1:27:56Speaker 4: Gross or perverse or whatever. I mean, I think what
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: made this version more disturbing than the original was that
- 1:28:00Speaker 4: the tree was more intimate with her. It wasn't just this.
- 1:28:03Speaker 4: In the original, the tree was just attacking her with
- 1:28:06Speaker 4: these limbs from off screen. In this one, it was
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: like this snake thing. I was just like, ah, that's nuts.
- 1:28:13Speaker 10: Again it was a little it was slightly more realistic
- 1:28:16Speaker 10: was like if you can get that way about it
- 1:28:19Speaker 10: she at first is just sort of caught in the
- 1:28:21Speaker 10: limbs and the trees and like you could get that
- 1:28:24Speaker 10: and then it.
- 1:28:25Speaker 6: I mean the other one's a big puppet tree you
- 1:28:27Speaker 6: know i mean it's a very different thing where this
- 1:28:29Speaker 6: one starts off again like a lot of this stuff
- 1:28:31Speaker 6: it starts off almost like it could happen and then
- 1:28:34Speaker 6: it takes it to another even more horrifying level so
- 1:28:38Speaker 6: i think that's what this movie does pretty well, is
- 1:28:41Speaker 6: it starts off at a very grounded level. Again, you
- 1:28:44Speaker 6: don't like how self-serious it was, but I think, I
- 1:28:47Speaker 6: don't think he could do it any other way. Especially
- 1:28:50Speaker 6: in this time period, like in a time when we
- 1:28:52Speaker 6: don't want silly Batman anymore. We want Nolan Batman. We
- 1:28:55Speaker 6: want serious Batman. It's the same thing with this. I
- 1:28:58Speaker 6: don't think they could do another comedy version. I think
- 1:29:01Speaker 6: the only way they would even let them remake it
- 1:29:03Speaker 6: is like, okay, we're going to go deadly serious this time.
- 1:29:05Speaker 6: And for the most part it is. Again, it's, I guess,
- 1:29:08Speaker 6: arguable whether or not it works for the viewer individually,
- 1:29:11Speaker 6: but I don't think they would have let.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: Them do anything else. I think that's why they had
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: to make a musical out of it.
- 1:29:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: You know, because if you just did a straight play
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: like that, you would have to go serious, which wouldn't work.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: Or if you tried to go silly, it wouldn't work
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: until you added, until you went over the top. And
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: I don't think theatrically, I don't think.
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: That would have worked.
- 1:29:30Speaker 6: And I definitely don't think they would have let them
- 1:29:31Speaker 6: do that. I think this is the only way the
- 1:29:33Speaker 6: studio would have gone with it, is be like, okay,
- 1:29:35Speaker 6: none of this joking around stuff. We need it to
- 1:29:38Speaker 6: be serious, like all of these horror movies. So, again,
- 1:29:41Speaker 6: I'm sure that was not even on the table at
- 1:29:43Speaker 6: that point.
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: I do kind of miss the original. There were just these,
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: Sam Raimi just had all these bags of tricks. Like,
- 1:29:50Speaker 4: it wasn't just the friends getting possessed and attacking them.
- 1:29:54Speaker 4: It was, like, voices, you know, like, taunting him in
- 1:29:57Speaker 4: the cellar. Like, the light bulb filling up with blood
- 1:29:59Speaker 4: and the film projector going. Just little stuff. And, like,
- 1:30:03Speaker 4: the cabin would just, like, have these loud noises, like,
- 1:30:05Speaker 4: coming from all over the place. And it scared, you know.
- 1:30:08Speaker 4: It just had the... It wasn't just the possessed friends.
- 1:30:12Speaker 4: It was this... It was just this evil attacking from all,
- 1:30:16Speaker 4: you know... around them like constantly.
- 1:30:18Speaker 6: And it was his style like his visual style and
- 1:30:21Speaker 6: his sense of the framing framing and placing everything like
- 1:30:25Speaker 6: that i remember like the shot.
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: I remember most from the movie is just when he's
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: like walking across the cabin floor and it's like going
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: above the beams and like the beams pass by the
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: lens like just stuff like touches like that really gave
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: it kind of like it gave it this identity and
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: it kind of made this it didn't feel like the
- 1:30:41Speaker 4: movie was this one kind of It wasn't just about
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: this one thing as much. And this movie definitely focused
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: mainly on the possession.
- 1:30:51Speaker 6: I mean, it is, yeah. The original is mostly to
- 1:30:55Speaker 6: me about Sam Raimi and Sam Raimi's visual style and
- 1:30:59Speaker 6: the way that he does things. And more so even
- 1:31:01Speaker 6: than the Ash character. Because to me, the Ash character
- 1:31:04Speaker 6: doesn't become the character that we all love until the
- 1:31:07Speaker 6: second one, really. He doesn't get to be... the funny,
- 1:31:10Speaker 6: quippy guy. He doesn't get the chainsaw.
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: He doesn't get any of that stuff. He's such a
- 1:31:14Speaker 4: wimp in the first one.
- 1:31:17Speaker 6: He just is dealing with this horrible situation, and the
- 1:31:20Speaker 6: horrible situation is everything that Sam Raimi brings to it. Again,
- 1:31:24Speaker 6: I think that movie was amazing and changed everything, and
- 1:31:28Speaker 6: it was mostly Sam Raimi's doing, and this definitely doesn't
- 1:31:31Speaker 6: fall into that category, but it does what it can,
- 1:31:35Speaker 6: I suppose. Do we think we've rounded this thing out?
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: I think we've beaten it to death.
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: I feel like I was maybe too harsh. I'm glad
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: I supported it and I paid money to see it
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: because that way I can see the French because Sam
- 1:31:47Speaker 4: Raimi is supposedly still going to do the next Army
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: Darkness and they're going to merge the two universes. I'm
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: interested to see how that... I want to see that happen.
- 1:31:57Speaker 4: I'm optimistic. I'll definitely see the sequel to this.
- 1:32:02Speaker 11: Alright.
- 1:32:03Speaker 6: I guess we should wrap things up then. So... Thank
- 1:32:05Speaker 6: you once again to the Dreamland Film Center for letting
- 1:32:08Speaker 6: us come here and put this show together. We're going
- 1:32:11Speaker 6: to try to work some more stuff together with them
- 1:32:14Speaker 6: to find out what they're doing. It is at LouisvilleFilmSociety.org
- 1:32:19Speaker 6: to find out what they have coming up as far
- 1:32:21Speaker 6: as film showings and other events. We will be back
- 1:32:26Speaker 6: here in the near future, including next week. Speaking of which... Otherwise,
- 1:32:30Speaker 6: that about does it. We will return here next week.
- 1:32:33Speaker 6: Same geek time, same geek feed. Thanks for listening.

- 1:33:23Speaker 16: of the year.
- 1:33:25Speaker 4: Away from school and from.
- 1:33:27Speaker 6: S-Mart, a week way off the job. He's so cute
- 1:33:35Speaker 6: and thin And that's why I love him.
- 1:33:38Speaker 16: This will be just like Cam But with a slutty tram.
- 1:33:44Speaker 4: In a few hours, you will.
- 1:33:46Speaker 3: See me doing the nasty in a tree.
- 1:33:50Speaker 17: Stop looking to get dizzy, but fresh air makes me dizzy.
- 1:33:53Speaker 6: I'm so perfect, girl.
- 1:33:55Speaker 4: Oh, look, there goes a squirrel.
- 1:33:57Speaker 17: I'll wake up in the woods of pure tranquility.
- 1:34:01Speaker 9: A chance for me to rest in a nice facility.
- 1:34:04Speaker 17: I came up to this cabin.
- 1:34:06Speaker 9: To read and sleep and bake.
- 1:34:07Speaker 11: Hope our headboard rattling don't keep your.
- 1:34:09Speaker 4: Prude ass awake.
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: Counting in the woods, ooh.
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: Counting in the woods, yeah.
- 1:34:18Speaker 16: We're five college students on our way to an old
- 1:34:21Speaker 16: abandoned counting in the woods.
- 1:34:23Speaker 10: Oh, yeah.
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: This trip will be wacky fun. Seven days to snuggle
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: my honey bun.

- 1:34:39Speaker 17: And tonight I'll make some snacks out of Hershey bars

- 1:35:31Speaker 4: in the woods.
- 1:35:39Speaker 20: I've only ever seen the first one.
- 1:35:40Speaker 4: I haven't seen Evil Dead 2. Oh, the second one
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: is worth it.
- 1:35:43Speaker 6: I disagree.
- 1:35:45Speaker 20: My friend and I, we were going to one night
- 1:35:48Speaker 20: marathon the original trilogy and then go see the movie
