- 0:00All right, let's jump right in today with a very, very quick
- 0:04overview of the Savior's visit among the Nephites and the
- 0:08Lamanites. You got the destruction in
- 0:12chapters 8 through 10. Then sometime thereafter we get
- 0:17his his appearance in Chapter 11.
- 0:20Then he gives that famous sermon at the temple in 12 through 14,
- 0:26followed by his discourse on the House of Israel, the Jews, the
- 0:31scattered Israelites, the Gentiles, and how the gospel is
- 0:35going to be moving through and and among those different groups
- 0:39as time progresses. Then right at the very end of
- 0:42chapter 16, here's Jesus. He's got this multitude at the
- 0:47temple in front of him, and he's been.
- 0:49It's been a long day. So.
- 0:50Starting here. This is where the day begins.
- 0:53You can imagine all of the experiences in Chapter 11 alone
- 0:57being emotionally and cognitively just fulfilling and
- 1:01then eventually overwhelming as far as them trying to stay stay
- 1:07focused and concentrating on everything that he's teaching.
- 1:10Then you get to the end of chapter 16 and what happens?
- 1:14He quotes a little section from Isaiah.
- 1:18So you'll notice at the finishing point of this little
- 1:22quotation, at the end of chapter 16, he opened 17 by saying,
- 1:27Behold, now it came to pass. When Jesus had spoken these
- 1:30words, he looked round about again on the multitude, and he
- 1:33said unto them, Behold, my time is at hand.
- 1:36I perceive that ye are weak, that you cannot understand all
- 1:41my words, which I am commanded of the Father to speak unto you
- 1:44at this time. So.
- 1:48Notice this pattern. He's in the middle of teaching
- 1:52the people things that he was commanded of the Father to teach
- 1:57unto them at that time. It's as if he had a a lesson
- 2:02outline, so to speak, but that. Lesson outline was given to him.
- 2:07By the Father, I love the fact that here's Jesus.
- 2:12He's perfect, he's complete, he's finished, he's resurrected,
- 2:16he's a God, he's exalted, he's arrived.
- 2:21And what is he doing? He's keeping commandments.
- 2:25He's still keeping commandments of Heavenly Father.
- 2:28I love that that he doesn't seem to see commandments as burdens
- 2:33or as as distractions of what he wants to do, but rather it's the
- 2:39focal point of his life. Even as a resurrected glorified
- 2:44God, he's still honoring and obeying the commands of Heavenly
- 2:48Father. I love that for my own life and
- 2:51for our life to not see commandments as a burden, but to
- 2:54see them as a as a means whereby we can put God first and in so
- 2:59doing, watch what he does to to magnify and multiply our efforts
- 3:04and our lives and our joys and our blessings and our prosperity
- 3:08and our peace. Jesus has made it somewhere to
- 3:12about this point in what he was commanded to teach the people.
- 3:16And now after quoting this little Isaiah block and this
- 3:20long section, after an incredible discourse, the sermon
- 3:24of the temple, he notices that they're weak.
- 3:27We don't know exactly what that means, but being a human being
- 3:32ourselves, we can probably relate to the situation where
- 3:35you've been in a classroom setting or in a conference
- 3:37setting where you want desperately to to pay close
- 3:42attention and to hang on every word, but your body might be
- 3:45physically weak or your mind might be cognitively overloaded.
- 3:49You might be a. Little.
- 3:50Bit exhausted and you can picture maybe some people
- 3:54looking a bit weary in the crowd and maybe some zoned out looks.
- 3:58I don't know if that's what was happening here with the Nephites
- 4:00and Lamanites, but whatever it was, Jesus perceived it.
- 4:04A good teacher, a good parent, a good leader doesn't just go
- 4:11through a Lesson plan. They don't just dump out
- 4:14everything that they want to do. They're perceiving the needs of
- 4:18the audience in front of them, whether it be their child or
- 4:21children or a flock, a congregation.
- 4:24In a work setting, you're constantly getting a pulse.
- 4:28How are people doing with what I'm sharing?
- 4:30Where are they? So Jesus recognizes that they're
- 4:34weak, and so he says, verse 3. Because of that, therefore go ye
- 4:39unto your homes. Notice you didn't say, go to
- 4:42your clubs, go to your organizations, go hang out with
- 4:46your friends. He said, go to your homes and
- 4:49ponder upon the things which I have said, and ask of the Father
- 4:53in my name, that you may understand and prepare your
- 4:56minds for the Morrow. And I come unto you again,
- 4:59because you'll notice Jesus isn't going to disregard the
- 5:03commands of His Father in heaven.
- 5:05He will fulfill those commandments.
- 5:07He will teach them everything that He's been asked to teach
- 5:10them. He's just going to.
- 5:12Delay it a little bit. This reminds me of something
- 5:16that I love from President Monson when he was the prophet.
- 5:19The phrase that he used on a couple of occasions.
- 5:21There is no problem to be solved.
- 5:24That's more important than a person to be loved.
- 5:27People are always more important than programs and procedures and
- 5:31practices. And Jesus is tuned into people
- 5:35and what their needs are, realizing it's not going to do
- 5:39any good. He could force his way through
- 5:42this entire list of teachings. He could do that.
- 5:45But it wouldn't be effective and it wouldn't bless lives the way
- 5:48it could if he waits until they're ready for it.
- 5:52So that's just something for us to consider in our parenting and
- 5:56in our leading and in our friendships that we have is you
- 6:00may be absolutely right and you may absolutely want to cram
- 6:03something down somebody's throat, so, so to speak, but it
- 6:08won't likely change any hearts or minds or lives if we do it
- 6:12that way. But if we follow the Savior's
- 6:14example, we perceive where people are and we adapt and we
- 6:17adjust dynamically with a focus and a care and concern on the
- 6:21people themselves. What's so beautiful about these
- 6:24stories is what happens in chapter 17 of what does Jesus
- 6:28do? So he is following the commands
- 6:31of the Father. He also understands.
- 6:33He's talking to real people who have real needs.
- 6:37This will meet their needs. But we encourage you to pay
- 6:39attention closely to chapter 17. What does He choose to do?
- 6:43He eventually does get through all this, but does it happen
- 6:46here in chapter 17 or are there other activities that happen?
- 6:50So as you think about it in your own life, if you're ever in a
- 6:52situation where you're called to teach or to parent or to provide
- 6:56friendship, and you have a plan for what you're going to do,
- 6:59great, right? It's really hard to succeed
- 7:02without a plan. But also be willing to be
- 7:04perceptive and to think through how can I put a pause here?
- 7:08Look at 17 and look at the example that Jesus provides of
- 7:12how does he actually meet the needs of the people right then
- 7:15and there so that they are more fully prepared to receive the
- 7:19word. Jesus got their attention by
- 7:22telling them that he was leaving and going to come back tomorrow
- 7:25and go to your homes and prepare your minds at that point.
- 7:28If there had been, we don't know for sure, but if there had been
- 7:31anybody who was kind of nodding off or or looking a little.
- 7:35Distracted or or zoning out in any degree, Nobody's doing that
- 7:40now. He's got their attention.
- 7:42They're all looking at Him, and notice that verse 5 says it came
- 7:46to pass. When Jesus had thus spoken, he
- 7:48cast his eyes round about again on the multitude, and behold,
- 7:53they were in tears and did live steadfastly upon Him, as if they
- 7:58would ask Him to tarry a little longer with them.
- 8:02Brothers and sisters, I, I don't know, I don't have any authority
- 8:05for these things, but I can't imagine these people sitting
- 8:09there looking at Jesus with tears in their eyes and the
- 8:12thoughts and the feelings coming from them being, oh, Jesus,
- 8:16please stay a little longer and tell us more about the House of
- 8:19Israel or preach more about the Jews and the Gentiles and the
- 8:24scattered Israelites and how it's all going to come together.
- 8:26As important as that is. And we we're going to get that.
- 8:30Like Taylor said, it's going to come in subsequent chapters.
- 8:33But I don't think they were those tears were communicating.
- 8:38We want more for our mind at this point.
- 8:41I think personally that those tears are communicating Jesus,
- 8:45we just want to be with you more, more of this kind of an
- 8:50experience, not necessarily this kind of an experience.
- 8:54They're they're probably a little bit on cognitive overload
- 8:57at this point with the the the enormity of all these things
- 9:01that they've been learning from him.
- 9:03So I love the fact that Jesus responds as follows verse 6 And
- 9:08he said unto them, Behold, my bowels are filled with
- 9:12compassion towards you. Have you any sick that are among
- 9:16you? Bring them, hit her.
- 9:18Have you any that are lame or blind or halt or maimed or
- 9:21leprous, or that are withered, or that are deaf, or that are
- 9:24afflicted in any manner? Bring them, hit her, and I will
- 9:28heal them. For I have compassion upon you.
- 9:30My bowels are filled with mercy. So then this beautiful
- 9:33opportunity for the people to to bring their sick and their
- 9:38afflicted to Christ, for him to perform his miracles that the
- 9:43people in the New Testament account had witnessed on
- 9:46multiple occasions. Now these Book Mormon people are
- 9:50going to get to experience a different aspect or a different
- 9:54side of the Savior's love and mercy and grace, not just in His
- 10:00teachings and in His testifying, but now at a very deep level.
- 10:06He's going to open his heart and they're going to feel some
- 10:09things and they're going to experience some things that are
- 10:11really profound. In this chapter.
- 10:14Notice what happens verse 8. For I perceive that you desire
- 10:20that I should show unto you what I've done unto your brethren of
- 10:21Jerusalem. There it is again.
- 10:23It's just this little word. Perceive.
- 10:26It showed up over at the beginning of verse 2.
- 10:28Here it is again in verse 8. To me, this is the essence of
- 10:32parenting. Good leadership, good teaching
- 10:35is perception of the needs of the audience, the target
- 10:40audience that you're you're working with.
- 10:43Verse 9. It came to pass, that when he
- 10:45had thus spoken, all the multitude with one accord, did
- 10:47go forth with their sick, and their afflicted, and their lame,
- 10:50and with their blind, and with their dumb, and with all them
- 10:53that were afflicted in any manner and notice.
- 10:55How He did it, He did heal them, everyone, as they were brought
- 11:01forth unto Him. Implication of the language
- 11:04there is that he didn't have a big crowd of sick folk and say
- 11:09in mass you're all healed. That isn't how he usually does
- 11:14things, right? It seems that he healed them,
- 11:17everyone as they were brought forth unto him, that one by one
- 11:22care and concern for the individual.
- 11:24I love that because yes, it's an infinite atonement that covers
- 11:30everyone, but the power for me lies in the personal nature of
- 11:37that atonement, that Jesus knows me personally, independently of
- 11:42everybody else. And he knows you and he knows
- 11:45what you're struggling with, and he perceives exactly what you
- 11:48need in order to be healed and to be made whole.
- 11:51And that's what's happening with these people following that
- 11:56remarkable experience. Verse 11 says he commanded that
- 11:58their little children should be brought.
- 12:02So they brought their little children, and set them down upon
- 12:04the ground round about him, and Jesus stood in the midst, and
- 12:08the multitude gave way, till they had all been brought unto
- 12:11Him. There's a little.
- 12:13Subtle teaching buried in that verse that sometimes we
- 12:17overlook. We would all love dearly to be
- 12:20close to Jesus. But brothers and sisters,
- 12:23there's one thing I would love more than that, and that would
- 12:27be to have my children be close to Jesus.
- 12:30Which means the multitude gave way.
- 12:34Don't read too much into this. It's not like they're departing
- 12:36from Jesus. The reality is is the Savior's
- 12:39in the middle and the crowd makes room for these children
- 12:45and then the adults and the the people who we've been talking
- 12:48about, they make way so that Jesus.
- 12:50Can stand in the midst. Of all these little children
- 12:54that are around him. And thus begins, in my opinion,
- 12:59one of the sweetest and most tender parts of the entire Book
- 13:04of Mormon story in all 531 pages.
- 13:07This, to me, gives us a glimpse into.
- 13:10The Heart of the. Savior, as well as any any other
- 13:14place in the book can from my perspective.
- 13:17Notice verse 13. It came to pass when they had
- 13:19all been brought. Jesus stood in the midst.
- 13:22He commanded the multitude. That they should kneel down upon
- 13:24the ground. And verse 14 it came to pass
- 13:27when they had knelt upon the ground.
- 13:29Jesus groaned within himself and said, Father, I'm troubled
- 13:33because of the wickedness of the people of the House of Israel.
- 13:37Isn't that interesting? He's surrounded by little
- 13:40children and his heart is groaning within him.
- 13:44He's troubled because of the wickedness, not because of the
- 13:47wickedness of the little children, but he sees this
- 13:50purity sitting in front of him. He sees their smiles.
- 13:52He sees the look in their. Faces and it troubles him.
- 13:57Concerning the wickedness of the House of Israel.
- 13:59And he's groaning. He's going to give you glimpses
- 14:02into his heart in these next few verses that are beautiful.
- 14:08How do you come to know somebody that you've never met before?
- 14:12How do you emulate their example if you've never met them
- 14:16personally in life? In mortality, I think you learn
- 14:21their stories. You see how they act in certain
- 14:24situations. You see how they treat people.
- 14:26You see how they respond when when certain situations arise.
- 14:31And in this case, I think we're going to see the Savior's
- 14:34character revealed. His heart is going to be
- 14:38revealed in ways that it's pretty hard to find a better
- 14:43example than this as to what kind of a person, the man, the
- 14:48the, the God, this exalted being named Jesus Christ.
- 14:53As far as trying to come to know him better and understand him
- 14:56better. Pay close attention as we
- 14:58proceed here. Verse. 15 When he had said these
- 15:01words, he himself also knelt upon the earth, and behold, he
- 15:04prayed unto the Father. Here is an exalted, glorified
- 15:07God, and he's not just keeping commandments, He's also
- 15:10continuing to. Pray to the Father.
- 15:13So prayer isn't just this thing that we we do because it's a
- 15:17checklist thing for members of the church to to mark off every
- 15:20day. Yep, I said my prayers.
- 15:22Prayer is this essential connecting thread that binds us
- 15:28to the God who gave us life and Jesus is still doing it right
- 15:31here. The things which he prayed
- 15:34cannot be written, and the multitude did their record who
- 15:36heard him. And after this manner do they
- 15:39bear record. The eye has never seen, neither
- 15:41hath the ear heard before so great and marvelous things as we
- 15:44saw and heard Jesus speak unto the Father.
- 15:47And it goes on to say, No tongue can even speak these words.
- 15:50That's how profound his prayers. Now notice verse 18.
- 15:54It came to pass. When Jesus had made an end of
- 15:56praying unto the Father, He arose.
- 15:58So great was the joy of the multitude that they were
- 16:01overcome. And it came to pass, the Jesus
- 16:03spake unto them and bade them arise, and they arose from the
- 16:06earth. And he said unto them, Blessed
- 16:07are you because of your faith. And now behold, my joy is full.
- 16:13That's profound that the audience is overwhelmed.
- 16:16I think you and I can probably relate to this in the sense of
- 16:21being in a crowd where you're just overwhelmed with joy and
- 16:24everybody feels it together, unified.
- 16:28They're all in the same wrapped up feeling of the Lord's love of
- 16:32the Spirit, hearing him pray and they're overwhelmed and he says
- 16:36my joy is full. Now notice verse 21.
- 16:39When he had said these words, he wept.
- 16:42And the multitude. By record of it.
- 16:44And he took their little children 1 by 1, And he blessed
- 16:49them, and he prayed unto the Father for them once again for
- 16:54me. To have a personal experience
- 16:56with the Savior like these people have had would be
- 16:58remarkable. The only thing better that I can
- 17:00imagine would be to witness and watch a personal experience of
- 17:05the Savior blessing and praying to the Father while holding my
- 17:11children 1 by 1 by 1. And notice when he had done this
- 17:16verse 22 he wept again. Interesting.
- 17:20He weeps, then takes their children 1 by 1 and ministers to
- 17:24them and prays to the father and then he wept again.
- 17:26I'm just going to ask a really simple question here.
- 17:29How would you describe the world's perspective on children?
- 17:36And I mean when I say the world, I mean society and and culture.
- 17:41And in some ways the, the popular media, the popular
- 17:45aspects of our of our culture. How is family portrayed?
- 17:49How are children portrayed? How are they seen?
- 17:53In some circles, you might see them as expensive in the way
- 18:00annoying, loud. They prevent you from fulfilling
- 18:04all of the things that you want to self fulfill and they bind
- 18:10you down. All of these negative aspects
- 18:13can come out sometimes in the way children are viewed or
- 18:17portrayed in media or in the cultural conversations.
- 18:22Now let me ask a second question.
- 18:25How does the Savior, based on the text here in chapter 17, how
- 18:29does Jesus feel about children? How does he feel about little
- 18:34ones, brothers and sisters? For me, verse 21 and 22 teach me
- 18:40more about the character of Christ than if He had given this
- 18:45long 20 chapter sermon and discourse about how He feels
- 18:49about children. The fact that you see Him
- 18:52standing in the midst of children and weeping as He looks
- 18:56at them, and then taking them one by one and blessing them and
- 18:59praying to the Father for them. And then once He had done that,
- 19:01he weeps again. Those tears to me, speak volumes
- 19:08about what kind of a person, what kind of a being Jesus is
- 19:11and how he feels about children. And consequently, I want to be
- 19:16more like him, and I want to reflect more of his attributes
- 19:20and characteristics and perfections as I strive through
- 19:24mortality. And so if you analyze that from
- 19:28that perspective, as a culture, we have a lot of room to grow
- 19:33and improve in how we treat. Children and little ones, and
- 19:39how we see them and perceive them.
- 19:42Once he had finished this verse 24, as they looked to behold,
- 19:46they cast their eyes towards heaven, and they saw the heavens
- 19:50open, and they saw angels descending out of heaven, as it
- 19:54were, in the midst of fire. And they came down and encircled
- 19:57those little ones about, and they were encircled about with
- 20:00fire, and the angels did minister unto them.
- 20:04You'll notice how heaven feels about little children.
- 20:06My wife and I have had ten children.
- 20:09People have asked Brother Griffin, how do you and your
- 20:13wife take care of and love sufficiently 10 children?
- 20:18I don't have a good answer for you other than we have
- 20:22experienced a phenomenon with every birth that it's not a
- 20:26matter of saying I only have this much love to give.
- 20:30And now it's going to have to be divided one step even further
- 20:33than it was before. Love doesn't get divided in the
- 20:37gospel of Jesus Christ. Love gets multiplied with each
- 20:41child coming into the home they bring with them.
- 20:45It's as these angels coming down, descending from heaven,
- 20:48ministering. It's that same idea these
- 20:51children bring with them, this package of love that multiplies
- 20:56and there's enough and to spare in a family, regardless of what
- 21:00that family size is, whether it's just a husband and wife or
- 21:04husband and wife with one child or 10 children or adopted
- 21:07children, it doesn't matter. Heaven isn't looking at things
- 21:11the way we are. God loves little children.
- 21:16And can I just add something here?
- 21:18You don't have to be a parent or even married to nurture and care
- 21:24for little children, to be a ministering Angel to the little
- 21:28ones. Let me illustrate this with a
- 21:31few real life examples. My wife has an aunt who's never
- 21:38been married. We affectionately call her
- 21:40Auntie Karen. Karen has been a blessing in my
- 21:44wife's life. Ever since the day she was born.
- 21:48She's been there celebrating the successes, crying through the
- 21:52struggles. She's been there giving counsel,
- 21:56encouragement and advice. Auntie Karen has become a
- 22:01ministering Angel in many ways to our children.
- 22:05She's a part of our family and and we feel of God's love coming
- 22:10to our children now through her in so many ways.
- 22:14And it's beautiful to watch that, to watch those those
- 22:19relationships being being forged and strengthened with this
- 22:24incredible daughter of God. Another example, my wife has an
- 22:30uncle named Reed, and he has been such a blessing to our
- 22:36family and to many other families in so many ways.
- 22:41He knows everything about science, about the animal
- 22:45Kingdom and the plant Kingdom, and every time he starts
- 22:48explaining things about how they work and telling stories, it's
- 22:52amazing to watch my children just come and gather around him.
- 22:56And as I sit back and watch those experiences, I can see
- 23:00God's love and God's goodness and His light and His truth
- 23:06being brought into the lives of my children through Uncle Reed,
- 23:12who in all of those moments is in every way, shape, and form a
- 23:17ministering Angel. And yet, some of the greatest
- 23:20lessons that we have learned from Uncle Reed have come
- 23:24through watching him endure intense physical pain and
- 23:29setbacks with his health. 1/3 And final example, my my wife
- 23:35has a dear friend, a college roommate from years ago named
- 23:39Susan that my children now call Aunt Susan.
- 23:44She has come as our adopted aunt.
- 23:47She visits every year, she loves, she nurtures, she reads
- 23:53too, she blesses, she feeds and helps our children for a for a
- 24:00short week or a few days every year.
- 24:03And they have grown to look forward to those visits, and
- 24:05they love her and they feel of God's love through her, even
- 24:10though they're not technically related to her.
- 24:13That doesn't matter. She's still a ministering Angel
- 24:16to them. The point is, whatever our
- 24:19circumstance in life, married, unmarried, with children,
- 24:24without children, with children on this side or on that side of
- 24:28the veil, the point is we can participate with Christ in this
- 24:33effort to bless the little ones around us in that sphere of
- 24:39influence that God has granted to us.
- 24:42And as we move forward, our world desperately needs more
- 24:48people focused on how to help and bless and minister to these
- 24:55rising generations of children and youth and young adults as we
- 25:00move forward in the work. I want to echo what Tyler says,
- 25:04that families come in all shapes and sizes and it's a matter of
- 25:09the Lord's will. And we shouldn't just be looking
- 25:13to the world for how we manage our families.
- 25:17We should be looking to God. And in my situation, my wife and
- 25:22I, we got married a little late. She happily says that she was
- 25:2529, I was 31, so we were a little bit older.
- 25:28We actually both came from families of seven.
- 25:31We're like, we're going to have at least seven kids and didn't
- 25:35happen. We had infertility and for many
- 25:39years couldn't have kids. And then through the miracle of
- 25:42adoption, we were able to bring 2 lovely children into our home.
- 25:46And it's amazing that whether by natural birth or by adoption,
- 25:50children are a miracle. And it's interesting, the love
- 25:54that expands. So our kids have birth parents
- 25:58who we're still in contact with who love these children.
- 26:01And we love them. And our children are loved by
- 26:03us. They're loved by God, and we
- 26:06tell our kids, you're kind of lucky because you guys get all
- 26:09this extra love from so many people.
- 26:11Even tell them, you know Jesus was adopted, so you're in good
- 26:17hands. The point here is that all of us
- 26:21are in a variety of circumstances, and it's
- 26:23beautiful to look at how Jesus treats the children.
- 26:28Whether we're in a family of many or few or none, ultimately
- 26:33God doesn't count. Except he does count.
- 26:37Where's our heart? Are we looking towards Him?
- 26:39And on that note, let's remind ourselves that though we are
- 26:44reading Scripture, Scripture means written words.
- 26:49Jesus is revealed not only by words, but also by deeds.
- 26:55Now we are in many ways from the ancient past dependent on the
- 27:00words of witnesses about the deeds of Jesus.
- 27:05And one of the beautiful things about Scriptures, one of the
- 27:07reasons we love reading the Scriptures with you is to hear
- 27:11the words of God and through those words to have his deeds
- 27:14revealed. And we're seeing here in chapter
- 27:1617 that, yeah, he taught all these words, but then we have
- 27:20these amazing deeds where his character is revealed to us.
- 27:24But we invite you to think about it's not only are the deeds of
- 27:29God or Jesus revealed in Scripture, they are revealed in
- 27:33our lives. And Jesus has promised that the
- 27:37expanding of the Kingdom of God is done through deeds of
- 27:41righteousness, through his deeds of righteousness and through the
- 27:44deeds of righteousness that He inspires us.
- 27:46Encourage you to look around your life.
- 27:48What deeds have you seen where God has done incredible things
- 27:52in your life that reveals his character?
- 27:55How have you seen Him bless the lives of others?
- 27:57What other deeds has He done to bring joy and salvation to
- 28:02people that reveals God? So as we continue on in these
- 28:06chapters, we want you to think about what are the words and
- 28:09deeds that are revealed that help us to better understand and
- 28:12see the character of God. Then we invite you to then
- 28:15ponder deeply which of those actually will help you in the
- 28:18next day or week. Have greater trust in the Lord
- 28:22so you can feel the joy as the people felt here, which again is
- 28:27tied right back into His joy, or He will have those tears,
- 28:32fullness of joy. And I have to say, I've looked
- 28:34at that passage where he says I have a fullness of joy.
- 28:36I thought I would have thought when he got resurrected, he
- 28:39would have said, now I have a fullness of joy.
- 28:41Or when the atonement was complete, fullness of joy.
- 28:44And it's interesting, he says, and I don't mean to make too
- 28:47much of this. It's when he sees the joy of the
- 28:50people, His joy is full. And in some ways that's what
- 28:54family and that's what the church is about.
- 28:57So this chapter 17 closes with Mormon telling us that there
- 29:04were 2500 people in the audience at the end of this experience.
- 29:10So that's everybody who was involved in 3511, plus any that
- 29:13they might have added through the sick and the afflicted and
- 29:16the children in chapter 17 who may or may not have been there
- 29:19originally. Point being, by the time we're
- 29:22finished here, 2500 people have had one-on-one experience with
- 29:28Jesus. And by the way, their day isn't
- 29:30over yet. The day started here in the
- 29:34morning and we're still not over.
- 29:36We've got one more chapter to go before day one is going to end.
- 29:41And he opens up chapter 18 by commanding that the disciples
- 29:45should bring some bread and wine unto him.
- 29:48Brothers and sisters, Jesus could have miraculously created
- 29:54and made for them bread and wine on that occasion, like he's
- 29:58going to do the next day on Day 2, He's going to provide bread
- 30:01and wine miraculously for them. So it's interesting when we try
- 30:06to pigeonhole Jesus or try to create a one-size-fits-all for
- 30:11how he always does things. It's pretty hard to do because
- 30:15sometimes if you look at his miracles in the New Testament.
- 30:17He uses a variety of ways to heal different people with
- 30:20different infirmities at different times and different
- 30:23needs. Same thing here with the
- 30:24sacrament. In chapter 18, He asks them to
- 30:27bring bread and wine. In the next chapter, He's going
- 30:30to provide it miraculously. Jesus does for us whatever is
- 30:35going to provide the greatest growth and development period.
- 30:39That's what he always does. But it sometimes changes the
- 30:42practice or it looks different on the outside.
- 30:46And we've got to be comfortable with that as members of the
- 30:48church when when things change, either in our worship services
- 30:52or in the temple ordinances or in our missionary service or the
- 30:56way we are instructed to do certain things, it's OK.
- 31:00It's getting us another opportunity to reach out and
- 31:04help lift people to a new level. So in this case, you can picture
- 31:08these disciples in verse 2. They were gone to get the bread
- 31:10and wine. He commands that the multitude
- 31:12should sit upon the earth. Now I need to just point this
- 31:15out. If you're one of those disciples
- 31:18who ran home to get bread and wine to bring back to Jesus,
- 31:24let's just be really honest for a minute.
- 31:26I would feel really silly going home and getting any loaves of
- 31:30bread that I might have at home to then bring them and put them
- 31:34in front of Jesus. I would feel really inadequate.
- 31:37Regardless of how good the bread is and how how nice it looks or
- 31:40how freshly it was made, I would still feel inadequate putting it
- 31:45in front of Jesus. Isn't this fascinating if you
- 31:47consider this altar symbolism? So.
- 31:51Here are these. People that go home, they come
- 31:53back and they place an offering, so to speak, on the altar in
- 31:59front of Jesus. In this case, let's focus first
- 32:04on the bread. So they put the bread there.
- 32:07Look, if you picture any loaf of bread and you put it in front of
- 32:11you on a table and just look at it for a minute, the reality is,
- 32:15is what you've placed there is extremely mortal.
- 32:19It's flawed. What do I mean by mortal and
- 32:22flawed? I mean that if you just leave it
- 32:25there for 6789 days, just just give it time and eventually
- 32:30what's going to happen sooner than later, that bread is going
- 32:34to start growing things and decaying and breaking down.
- 32:40And ultimately and eventually you leave it there long enough
- 32:43and it becomes unrecognizable. It returns to dust.
- 32:47Sounds an awful lot like everything else in mortality.
- 32:52It has a clock ticking. It's, it's going to eventually
- 32:55break down and return to its basic elements, regardless of
- 32:59how good it looks today. Now where am I going with this?
- 33:03Brothers and sisters? Jesus is the only one who has
- 33:06the capacity to take our mortal offerings, our imperfect
- 33:11offerings, bless them, sanctify them, and then He doesn't keep
- 33:17them for Himself. You'll notice what He did with
- 33:20their bread. He took it in verse 3.
- 33:23When the disciples had come with bread and wine.
- 33:25He took of the bread and he break and blessed it, and he
- 33:27gave unto the disciples and commanded that they should eat.
- 33:31Jesus wasn't sitting there waiting for them to bring bread
- 33:33so He could eat. He was asking them to bring
- 33:36bread so that He could feed them in a way that they would be
- 33:41filled, not in a mortal way. So Jesus takes their offering
- 33:46and He gives it back to them and commands that they give it to
- 33:50the multitude. But you'll notice the
- 33:52difference. He gives them the bread with
- 33:58eternal capacities attached to it.
- 34:03He gives them this Sacramento bread, which when they
- 34:07internalize it, that need never turn to dust, that need never
- 34:12die or decay or go away, that can keep propelling them to
- 34:17higher and higher positions on the covenant path through the
- 34:21rest of their life. You and I, we do things for the
- 34:26Lord all the time. But in reality, brothers and
- 34:30sisters, Jesus is asking us to bring those mortal offerings,
- 34:34whether it be our time, our tithes and offerings, our money,
- 34:37our donations to the poor in whatever format they may come,
- 34:42our energies, our devotions. We put all of those things that
- 34:46are very mortal on the altar, and what happens is that Jesus
- 34:50consecrates them, and through those they then get given back
- 34:54to us as well as spread to the multitude, but in ways that
- 34:59eternally feed our soul, help us to grow up to become things that
- 35:03we aren't. Yet, but that we're striving to
- 35:05be more like Jesus. So I love the fact that here
- 35:09they're eating this bread. Verse 4, it says when they had
- 35:13eaten and were filled, He commanded that they should give
- 35:16unto the multitude. So now they're giving it out to
- 35:19the multitude. Notice what he tells them about
- 35:21that bread eating experience, that Sacramento experience.
- 35:25Look closely at verse 7. And this shall you do in
- 35:29remembrance of my body, which I have shown unto you.
- 35:35I think what's happening here is Jesus is opening up our minds to
- 35:38multiple ways of looking at this bread, not just one.
- 35:42We're very, very comfortable with and accustomed to looking
- 35:47at the sacrament bread as a representation of Jesus's
- 35:50bruised, broken, and torn flesh through the infinite atonement,
- 35:54which is wonderful. Keep celebrating the fact that
- 35:57He endured that for us. Don't, don't throw that away,
- 36:01but bring all that good that you have and add to it what he the
- 36:04added instruction here that he gives them that you're doing
- 36:07this in remembrance of my body, which I have shown unto you.
- 36:11The body he's shown unto them is his resurrected glorified body
- 36:15of flesh and bone, which ironically is the only
- 36:18resurrected body that we know of doctrinally that has any kind of
- 36:22scars in it. There's no, no way he can forget
- 36:26us. Isaiah says, because I have
- 36:28engraved in thee upon the palms of my hands, thy walls are
- 36:32continually before me. Beautiful imagery.
- 36:35So Jesus is saying, eat that bread and remembrance of the
- 36:38body which you see before me, which was bruised and broken and
- 36:41torn as part of the atoning process.
- 36:44But now we also eat that bread in remembrance of this
- 36:48resurrection promise. The fact that that which was
- 36:52mortal can actually be eternal and will be through through His,
- 36:58His merits and mercy and grace alone.
- 37:00And notice the promise at the end of verse 7.
- 37:03And it shall be a testimony unto the Father that you do always
- 37:06Remember Me. And if you do always Remember
- 37:08Me, you shall have My Spirit to be with you.
- 37:12Beautiful promise. Then he takes the wine.
- 37:15Look at verse 11. This shall you always do to
- 37:18those who repent or baptized in My name.
- 37:20And you shall do it in remembrance of My blood which I
- 37:24have shed for you, that you may witness unto the Father that you
- 37:27do always Remember Me. And if you do always Remember
- 37:29Me, you shall have My Spirit be with you.
- 37:32There He repeats it so. Isn't that interesting?
- 37:34Here's the bread in remembrance of the body which I've shown
- 37:37unto you. And now here's the wine in
- 37:39remembrance of the blood which I have shed for you.
- 37:43So blood representing mortality, He has shed.
- 37:48He gave up his mortality for you.
- 37:52I've shed that blood for you. So between these two, you get
- 37:57the bread and the the wine, one representing his immortal body
- 38:01standing there in front of them. The other, the mortal aspects
- 38:05that have been shed for you. You bring them together in this
- 38:08culminating experience of the sacrament.
- 38:10The symbolism is beautiful that Christ is saying, yes, there's a
- 38:15lot that's that's filled with with pain and disease and death
- 38:22and decay, all that which is mortal.
- 38:25But the promise is always Remember Me.
- 38:28You'll have my spirit to be with you.
- 38:30And all these incredible things that have been done for you that
- 38:34you couldn't do for yourself are embodied and symbolized in these
- 38:38sacraments, these Sacramento symbols of bread and wine.
- 38:43I just have to throw out here 1 little thing.
- 38:45When Jesus instituted the sacrament with the apostles at
- 38:49the Last Supper, they're celebrating either a Passover
- 38:53meal or the day before the Passover, depending on whether
- 38:55you go with Matthew, Mark, and Luke, or whether you go with
- 38:57John's timing. We're not going to get involved
- 38:59in that right now in that part of the discussion.
- 39:02The reality is, is as part of that Passover meal, every year
- 39:07since Moses brought the children of Israel out of Egypt, they've
- 39:10been celebrating this Passover meal.
- 39:12And during one part of that Passover meal sequence, there's
- 39:16a time when you take herbs. The closest herb we would have
- 39:20to hiss up might be parsley, and you dip it in really bitter
- 39:24herbs. Some families do it mild.
- 39:26When we do a Passover Seder service, we do it really, really
- 39:29hot. Horseradish sauce is what we
- 39:31use. When you put that in and then
- 39:34you put that in your mouth, it creates tears.
- 39:37It's painful, it's not fun. Then the next part of that
- 39:40sequence in the Seder services, you take a piece of matzo bread,
- 39:44these matzos, this unleavened bread, and you put it in
- 39:48Brothers and sisters. It's remarkable how quickly that
- 39:52bread absorbs the bitterness out of out of your.
- 39:56Mouth it absorbs it and you can't feel the pain anymore.
- 40:00It takes the tears away. Then when you swallow that
- 40:03bread, then you take a drink of that grape juice and it.
- 40:06Replaces that kind of that bad taste in your mouth with this
- 40:09sweet taste. That's what I see happening
- 40:13here. Every week I go to the sacrament
- 40:15table. I bring in the bitterness of
- 40:17bondage to slavery, of things mortal, The pain, the tears, the
- 40:22anguish, the frustrations, the struggles.
- 40:24And the first thing he offers us is a piece of bread, the bread
- 40:28of life. We put that in our mouth, and
- 40:31brothers and sisters were eating a lot more than just a piece of
- 40:34bread. We're taking into us this token
- 40:40of his perfected sacrifice in our behalf, and it absorbs the
- 40:45bitterness, and then he replaces that residue with this fresh
- 40:52drink to wash it all down, to remind us of who we can become.
- 40:58To me, it's remarkable to see this process take place over and
- 41:02over and over again, and to stop seeing the tray as just a little
- 41:07piece of bread and the other tray is just a cup of water.
- 41:11But to see a glorious promise of what Jesus is offering in
- 41:17exchange for what I brought to the sacrament table that day.
- 41:21Because everything I placed on the table is mortal.
- 41:23And it's painful and it hurts, but I, I walk away with that
- 41:29sweet forgiveness, that sweet hope, that sweet renewed faith
- 41:34that life is precious and it is worth fighting on.
- 41:38It is worth trying to to live more in accordance with the way
- 41:43he showed us the example to live.
- 41:45So as we partake of the sacrament, God gives that to us
- 41:48so that we can become like him. And let's look again at those
- 41:51promises in verse 7, verse 11. It's quite simple what Jesus
- 41:55asks us. There's many things to do in the
- 41:58gospel, but fundamental to all is to remember what does He ask
- 42:03us to remember? To remember Him.
- 42:06And if we do that, you get the Spirit.
- 42:09And as we've talked in past videos, when you have the Spirit
- 42:12of God that is prospering, it's part of that covenant of
- 42:17context. If we want to prosper in the
- 42:20land, we need to remember Him, and we'll always have His
- 42:23Spirit. And if you have the Spirit with
- 42:26you, it's a member of the Godhead, You will retain a
- 42:29remission of your sins. That is what God wants for us.
- 42:33He's like, listen, it's quite simple.
- 42:36Obviously we know it's very hard, but truly, if we are
- 42:39remembering Him in all things, it's much harder to be LED
- 42:45astray. It's much harder to do wrong.
- 42:48It's much harder to commit sin if we are remembering Him.
- 42:51But sometimes we forget. Sometimes we choose to forget.
- 42:54And the power is that every week, every week, we are freely
- 42:59invited to return to this symbolic sacrificial table
- 43:03called the sacrament table, where God, priests, and his
- 43:08people join together in a sacred meal, where we put our mortality
- 43:13on the altar. Jesus has put his mortality on
- 43:17the altar, and all of that becomes eternal nature through
- 43:22the power of the atonement and the resurrection.
- 43:25Again, as we look at these verses, there's a lot going on
- 43:28in Scriptures, but these are some of the most crucial and
- 43:31important for our salvation. For the sake of time, I want to
- 43:35just focus on one other verse in this incredible chapter that is
- 43:39worth your time to dig deep and study in depth.
- 43:44Look at verse 24. Therefore hold up your light,
- 43:48that it may shine unto the world.
- 43:51Behold, I am the light which ye shall hold up, that which ye
- 43:56have seen me do. Behold, you see that I have
- 43:59prayed unto the Father, and ye all have witnessed.
- 44:03I love this. He's commanding us to hold up
- 44:05our light. And then he clarifies, by the
- 44:07way, I'm the light that you're holding up.
- 44:09I am the light of the world. And back in the sermon of the
- 44:12temple, he told him, I give unto you to be the light of the
- 44:15world. So ultimately we become these
- 44:18reflecting lights for the ultimate light of the world.
- 44:24He promises us that. Verse 25.
- 44:27You see that I have commanded that none of you should go away,
- 44:30but rather have commanded that you should come unto me that you
- 44:34might feel and see. Even so shall ye do unto the
- 44:38world. That is what our message to the
- 44:41world is. Brothers and sisters, it's this
- 44:43simple yet most important and most profound invitation we can
- 44:48give is to people all over the world, and especially those
- 44:54closest around us to come and see, to come and see of God's
- 44:59goodness, to come and taste of his goodness and to hold up that
- 45:02light. I love a statement that Jeffrey
- 45:05R Holland used many, many years ago in a General conference talk
- 45:07when he said we must never let our faith be difficult to
- 45:13detect. That's the end of day one.
- 45:18That's an amazing day you you can imagine.
- 45:22Putting all of that into one day and experiencing, wow, well,
- 45:27this cloud comes and overshadows Jesus and his disciples, and
- 45:30while it's there he ascends to heaven.
- 45:32That night this multitude disperses and they're going all
- 45:36over the place trying to get people because he promised he
- 45:38was going to come tomorrow. So they're gathering people from
- 45:40all over. So this from 11 to 18 is day
- 45:46one. When day 2 begins, Jesus isn't
- 45:50there right at the beginning, but they've been going all
- 45:53around gathering people and there's a huge multitude that
- 45:57were introduced to in chapter 19 and they gather.
- 46:01They split into twelve groups because there are too many of
- 46:04them. These are the 12 apostles listed
- 46:06in verse four that Jesus has chosen among the Nephites and
- 46:09Lamanites, and they're teaching the things that Jesus taught
- 46:14yesterday. Notice verse 7.
- 46:17The disciples did pray unto the Father also in the name of
- 46:20Jesus. Then they go down into the
- 46:22water. Verse 11 Nephi went down and was
- 46:24baptized, and he came up out of the water and began to baptize.
- 46:27And then they start baptizing all the people.
- 46:31After the disciples, angels come down again and minister.
- 46:35And then Jesus came down, verse 15 and stood in the midst and
- 46:40ministered unto them. So thus begins day 2, the
- 46:43ministry of Christ. Verse 17.
- 46:46And it came to pass it. When they had all knelt down
- 46:48upon the earth, he commanded his disciples that they should pray.
- 46:51And behold, they began to pray. And they did pray unto Jesus,
- 46:55calling him their Lord and their God, which causes a lot of
- 46:58people to pause and ask a lot of questions.
- 47:01This isn't overly complicated here.
- 47:04Jesus is going to say later on why they're praying to him.
- 47:08So hold that thought. Verse 19 It came to pass that
- 47:11Jesus departed out of the midst of them, and went a little way
- 47:14off from them, and bowed himself to the earth.
- 47:17And then he says his own prayer. So he removes himself a little
- 47:20bit from the group, and then bows down and and offers his
- 47:22prayer. Notice what he says.
- 47:24Verse 20 Father, I think thee that thou has given the Holy
- 47:28Ghost unto these whom I have chosen.
- 47:30And it is. Because of their belief in me
- 47:32that I have chosen them out of the world.
- 47:34Sometimes we get this tendency to want to pat ourselves on the
- 47:37back thinking we're so good. Look at me, I chose the Lord.
- 47:42What he's basically saying here is I chose you because of your
- 47:47belief in me, and I chose you first and you responded to that
- 47:52choosing second, which it's not a big deal.
- 47:56But lest we start thinking that we're doing all of these things
- 47:59on our own brothers and sisters, I can't take one step on the
- 48:04covenant path without Jesus helping me through His merits
- 48:08and mercy and grace. There's never a time when I can
- 48:11look at heaven and say, I don't need your help on this one.
- 48:14I got this. Never can I do that.
- 48:17I can't do anything worthwhile. I can't go anywhere worthwhile
- 48:20without His help first and foremost.
- 48:23And throughout that process, notice he then goes on in verse
- 48:2721. Father, I pray thee that thou
- 48:30will give the Holy Ghost unto all them that shall believe in
- 48:34their words. You could write it next to verse
- 48:3521. That's me, that's us.
- 48:38We're included in verse 21. He's praying for us because
- 48:40we're believing in his words through the words of these
- 48:42people who've come to us through the book.
- 48:44Woman, look at the bottom part of verse 22.
- 48:47They pray unto me because I am with them.
- 48:52You'll notice the basic elements of prayer are to to thank for
- 48:55things and to petition for things, to ask for things that
- 48:59you want. Well, they're doing that with
- 49:01Jesus. He's he's standing there with
- 49:03them. Notice that he says in verse 25,
- 49:06it came to pass that Jesus blessed them as they did pray
- 49:09unto Him, and his countenance did smile upon them, and the
- 49:12light of his countenance did shine upon them.
- 49:14And behold, they were as wide as the countenance and also the
- 49:16garments of Jesus beautiful, as He's smiling at them, as they're
- 49:21connecting with him, as they're communing with Him, and then
- 49:24Jesus himself. Verse. 27 Turned from them
- 49:29again, and went a little way off, and bowed himself to the
- 49:31earth. As it's starting to sound
- 49:33familiar. Remember, Jesus in Gethsemane
- 49:37went a little ways away from his disciples and prayed.
- 49:41How many times? 3 occasions in Gethsemane.
- 49:44Look at verse 31. And it came to pass that he went
- 49:47again a little way off, and prayed under the Father.
- 49:50And tongue cannot speak the words which you prayed.
- 49:53Neither can be written by men, the words which you prayed, but
- 49:56they did understand in their hearts.
- 49:59So three times he's going to separate himself from the
- 50:01multitude. And there are other elements
- 50:03here that bring our minds back symbolically to Gethsemane and
- 50:08even some events on the cross. If you read chapter 19 through
- 50:12that lens. In closing here, Speaking of
- 50:15prayer, brothers and sisters, when I kneel down and pour my
- 50:20thoughts and my heart out to God, I'm not teaching God
- 50:23anything he doesn't already know.
- 50:25God's not up in his heavens saying, oh, I sure hope Tyler
- 50:29will talk to me today. I wonder, I wonder what he's
- 50:31really feeling. Brothers and sisters, God knows
- 50:34what I'm feeling better than I know what I'm feeling.
- 50:36He knows my past, He knows my present, and He knows my future.
- 50:40I'm not commanded to pray because God's curious about what
- 50:43I'm going through. I'm commanded to pray not for
- 50:47God's sake, but for my sake. He has given me that command
- 50:52because it gives me an opportunity to commune with Him
- 50:56and to learn some things about Him and about myself.
- 51:00My prayers don't teach God anything.
- 51:03My prayers teach me a great deal.
- 51:07And by the way, there are sometimes in life when you're
- 51:11going to kneel down to pray and you won't have the words your
- 51:17tongue can't express what you feel, what you want to share or
- 51:22what you want to ask of God. Some of my most profound
- 51:28experiences with prayer in life have involved very, very few
- 51:33words. I'm not in every case, but in
- 51:36enough that I've noticed a pattern.
- 51:38There's sometimes when I just groan within my soul when I
- 51:42kneel down and it's I just need to cry on his knees.
- 51:46I need to pour out my heart with feeling and connect in ways that
- 51:52don't involve the tongue speaking or the mind thinking
- 51:55through sentences of of common phrases that we use in prayer,
- 52:00but where we really connect with the God who gave us life, who
- 52:04loves us more than we'll ever love ourselves in this life, who
- 52:08understands us far better than we understand ourselves.
- 52:11Those sisters, the command from Jesus that He gives to us to
- 52:14pray unto the Father in His name isn't for God's benefit
- 52:19directly, it's for ours. We have the God of the universe
- 52:24who holds worlds without number in His hand, but He holds you in
- 52:30His heart because you're His child and He loves you.
- 52:34And I leave that with you in the name of Jesus Christ, Damon.
