- 0:15Speaker 1: Pushkin. Hello Stevie, Hey, hang on a second, let me
- 0:25Speaker 1: get Kaylee. Hello, Kalila, Hi, Hey.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Hello, Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
- 0:36Speaker 1: How was Thanksgiving?
- 0:38Speaker 3: Well, as you guys know, I was planning to take
- 0:40Speaker 3: a long trip home.
- 0:42Speaker 1: You were going to go see your mom in Chicago
- 0:45Speaker 1: and your dad in Iowa.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Yes, I was going to go for like a long
- 0:49Speaker 3: stretch over the holidays on the train.
- 0:52Speaker 1: On the train, yeah, in a sleeper car, in a
- 0:55Speaker 1: sleeper car, yes, which you've never done, which I've never done.
- 0:58Speaker 3: And my boyfriend was going to come with me and
- 1:00Speaker 3: meet my family. And I ended up canceling it last
- 1:04Speaker 3: minute because of you know, COVID you ever heard of it?
- 1:13Speaker 3: But I think then I realized how much the past
- 1:15Speaker 3: couple months I had been holding on to like, oh, well,
- 1:18Speaker 3: in November, I'm going to travel and that'll be like
- 1:20Speaker 3: something different. And then as soon as I was faced
- 1:22Speaker 3: with the prospect of just staying in my apartment and
- 1:25Speaker 3: continuing to do the same stuff, I got very depressed.
- 1:28Speaker 1: When's the last time you saw your mom?
- 1:31Speaker 3: It was now over a year ago. This is also
- 1:34Speaker 3: the first Thanksgiving of my entire life that I've not
- 1:37Speaker 3: been with my mom. So I was feeling sad about that.
- 1:43Speaker 3: There's this crab dip that I make every year for
- 1:45Speaker 3: Thanksgiving that I used to make with my grandma when
- 1:49Speaker 3: I was a kid, and then when my grandma died,
- 1:53Speaker 3: it was just like the thing that I would make
- 1:55Speaker 3: and bring to Thanksgiving. It's not Thanksgiving without crab dip.
- 1:59Speaker 3: So my mom suggested we each make the crab dip
- 2:03Speaker 3: separately and then we could get on a zoom and
- 2:05Speaker 3: eat it together. I have nice crab. Do you care
- 2:14Speaker 3: if I start crying?
- 2:16Speaker 1: No, I did. I haven't seen you in so long,
- 2:19Speaker 1: and it's just really good to see you. No, you
- 2:23Speaker 1: were good, honey.
- 2:25Speaker 3: And my mom also mailed me some of the stuff
- 2:27Speaker 3: for the crab dip to make sure that I had
- 2:29Speaker 3: all the ingredients I needed, which was very nice. And
- 2:33Speaker 3: we ate our crab dip at the same time. All right,
- 2:36Speaker 3: I'm ready, Okay, wait till we get my chip.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Okay, tip away, all right.
- 2:41Speaker 3: I'm dipped, me too, said like, what we were thankful for,
- 2:51Speaker 3: which is something we try to do every years. Yeah,
- 2:55Speaker 3: I'm thankful for you. I'm thankful for you. Just made
- 3:03Speaker 3: me feel connected in a time that was feeling kind
- 3:06Speaker 3: of isolated.
- 3:08Speaker 1: So I'm for that, Stevie. How how was how was
- 3:16Speaker 1: your Thanksgiving?
- 3:18Speaker 4: So?
- 3:19Speaker 5: Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. All you have to do
- 3:22Speaker 5: is like eat and be pleasant, Like what could be better?
- 3:27Speaker 5: But this year I did not go home, and a
- 3:31Speaker 5: number of my friends here in Brooklyn also weren't going home,
- 3:34Speaker 5: and so I was like, well, why don't I host
- 3:37Speaker 5: Thanksgiving this year? And probably because it's been so long
- 3:42Speaker 5: since I've been able to cook for people, which is
- 3:43Speaker 5: something that I love to do. I was like so
- 3:46Speaker 5: excited and had like everything ready and stage so it'd
- 3:50Speaker 5: be done exactly when everyone showed up, and I was like,
- 3:54Speaker 5: like I felt like a puppy waiting for like its
- 3:57Speaker 5: owners to come home from vacation.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Like I was just like waiting by the bell.
- 4:03Speaker 6: Huah.
- 4:04Speaker 5: I was like, you're here, Okay, Yeah, come on up,
- 4:07Speaker 5: so overeat go about it a Thanksgiving.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Every Thanksgiving we did it outside on my roof.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Oh nice, it was a nice day.
- 4:22Speaker 5: It was such a nice day. It was so warm.
- 4:24Speaker 5: We were like really lucky with the weather. I need
- 4:28Speaker 5: a ton of food.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I pretended. I was like cooking for like twelve people.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Wow, I don't know, Like there was so much planning
- 4:38Speaker 5: that went into doing that responsibly.
- 4:40Speaker 2: It's like we all got tested.
- 4:41Speaker 5: And we're quarantining, and like it was like group email
- 4:45Speaker 5: after group email after group email talking about like your
- 4:48Speaker 5: negative test and like when you got it and how
- 4:50Speaker 5: you're not going to see people. And it was like
- 4:52Speaker 5: a lot of work, honestly to make everybody feel comfortable.
- 4:56Speaker 2: But I don't know, I.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Was just really grateful that everybody was willing to sort
- 5:00Speaker 5: of like make it happen.
- 5:03Speaker 2: It felt even more special this year. I guess, Okay,
- 5:08Speaker 2: well I have this pie.
- 5:10Speaker 7: It's apple and onion and through year.
- 5:12Speaker 2: But also if we have snacks and we don't want
- 5:15Speaker 2: to fill up, we don't have to.
- 5:16Speaker 8: Yeah, I do want to go out, but I do
- 5:20Speaker 8: think we.
- 5:20Speaker 9: Should need that.
- 5:36Speaker 2: What about you, Jonathan, what did How was your Thanksgiving?
- 5:39Speaker 1: It was fun? I mean it was just me and
- 5:41Speaker 1: Emily and Augie. I do it Paki.
- 5:47Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Oki was really excited about all the different foods. He was.
- 5:50Speaker 1: He was very curious about what stuffing was. He had
- 5:53Speaker 1: never had stuffing. That was a lively conversation. I like
- 5:58Speaker 1: a staffine. Uh stuff, Well, yeah, it's stuff that you
- 6:02Speaker 1: stuff inside the turkey. You don't really do that anymore.
- 6:06Speaker 10: That's you're out of fast.
- 6:09Speaker 1: What do you mean you don't stuff a turkey anymore.
- 6:11Speaker 3: It's just sort of like robbing this turkey of his dignity.
- 6:15Speaker 1: So you think that that the turkey killing the turkey,
- 6:19Speaker 1: that doesn't rob it of its But setting that aside,
- 6:23Speaker 1: you feel at least like, well, you know.
- 6:25Speaker 2: He gave somebody a good meal, and we can respect.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I asked Aggie what he was grateful for. Hm, he's
- 6:34Speaker 1: going to be four in a couple of days. So
- 6:36Speaker 1: half of like the things that he says is like
- 6:37Speaker 1: really kind of like sweet and profound, and the other
- 6:40Speaker 1: half is this complete nonsense like you was saying, Like
- 6:44Speaker 1: we asked him what he was grateful for, and he
- 6:46Speaker 1: was like Mama and Papa and my family. But then
- 6:50Speaker 1: in the same breath as he's doing this list, he's
- 6:52Speaker 1: like kidding, King Kou.
- 6:55Speaker 3: What's that.
- 6:57Speaker 1: There's a series of books called Sweet Pickles where there's
- 6:59Speaker 1: like all these different characters like worried Walris and fix
- 7:03Speaker 1: It Camel kidding Kangaroo's this irredeemable jerk. All he does
- 7:08Speaker 1: is mean pranks on people. And I try to explain
- 7:11Speaker 1: to Augie about how like the lesson to learn here
- 7:14Speaker 1: is that, like, if you do something mean and then
- 7:16Speaker 1: say it's a joke, it doesn't make it funny. But
- 7:18Speaker 1: he thinks kidding Kangaroo is great, and we spent some
- 7:24Speaker 1: of the night trying to get into look inside his heart. No,
- 7:27Speaker 1: you cannot, Yes you have. You have to close your
- 7:32Speaker 1: eyes and think about what you really thankful.
- 7:35Speaker 8: For, right, hope, for everything.
- 7:39Speaker 1: And whole family.
- 7:42Speaker 2: I'm kidding ingoo and everything.
- 7:45Speaker 1: In Kangaroo's funny. I love kidding Gangaro. You know you
- 7:54Speaker 1: know what I'm giving? Thanks for what? And always not
- 7:58Speaker 1: just Thanksgiving Day but every day us Well, no to
- 8:03Speaker 1: our sponsors and to you. Sure, yes, but fundamentally it's
- 8:08Speaker 1: the sponsor because they're the ones that allow us to
- 8:11Speaker 1: pay for our microphone batteries. So let's pay homage to them,
- 8:16Speaker 1: shall we. I wanted to talk about music. Sure, let's
- 8:33Speaker 1: have a conversation about music. Do you like music?
- 8:38Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 8:38Speaker 3: I do?
- 8:40Speaker 1: Controversial, Stevie, Do you like music?
- 8:43Speaker 5: I mean, I guess I don't actually have like very
- 8:45Speaker 5: strong feelings about music.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Seems like we have ourselves a real point counterpoint situation here.
- 8:53Speaker 1: This conversation about music reminds me of a conversation about
- 8:56Speaker 1: music that I just was having just the other day
- 8:59Speaker 1: with my friend Gregor. You like music, I like music.
- 9:03Speaker 7: I like the way you ease your interview subject into
- 9:06Speaker 7: the interview with softball questions to begin with. I actually
- 9:10Speaker 7: I've been giving a lot of thought to music lately
- 9:12Speaker 7: because music was this really important thing in my life,
- 9:15Speaker 7: and it still is. But I think isn't isn't as
- 9:19Speaker 7: much in my kids' lives as my own. After school,
- 9:22Speaker 7: it would be these rumbles between sort of two teams
- 9:25Speaker 7: of boys fighting each other about the Stones versus the Who,
- 9:29Speaker 7: and you just get in there and beat the hell
- 9:31Speaker 7: up each.
- 9:31Speaker 1: Other and again, like nowadays, it seems as though young
- 9:35Speaker 1: people can like a vast array of things, whereas before,
- 9:38Speaker 1: like we wasted so much time pulling our hair out
- 9:41Speaker 1: over you know, the Beatles or the rolling Stones.
- 9:43Speaker 7: That's obviously why our generation is bald and younger people
- 9:46Speaker 7: have much more hair.
- 9:47Speaker 1: They really do.
- 9:48Speaker 7: Yeah, my kids are into like DM and not even
- 9:51Speaker 7: passionate about it. They're just I'm like, oh, what are
- 9:54Speaker 7: you listening to? And he's like, oh, just DM. Not
- 9:55Speaker 7: even like a song or a name or an artist.
- 9:57Speaker 7: It's just that's what they're listening to.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I don't know, but there's a character that was Yeah,
- 10:08Speaker 1: well that was upsetting.
- 10:11Speaker 7: Sounded like a tea kettle boiling. He got me all
- 10:14Speaker 7: off track. The point is, even to my own ears,
- 10:16Speaker 7: it sounds all tinny and funny when I'm like, there
- 10:18Speaker 7: used to be a man named Eric Clapton, and he
- 10:20Speaker 7: used to play cover songs and people called him a god,
- 10:23Speaker 7: and they're like, oh cool.
- 10:24Speaker 1: People used to write graffiti. I remember on the school
- 10:28Speaker 1: wall that said Eric Clapton is God, right, Like people
- 10:32Speaker 1: risk their lives to actually spray paint that. They'd go
- 10:35Speaker 1: on top of the roof of the gym and hang
- 10:37Speaker 1: down and write it several stories off the ground.
- 10:40Speaker 7: Yeah, it was everywhere, and people would scratch it into
- 10:42Speaker 7: notebooks and it was a whole tribal identification with Eric Clapton.
- 10:45Speaker 7: But in my band, this is the point I'm trying
- 10:48Speaker 7: to make to you. We played the song Cocaine.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Wait, hang on a second, what about this band? Just yeah,
- 10:54Speaker 1: you had a band?
- 10:55Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 10:56Speaker 1: Why this is the first I'm hearing of this.
- 10:58Speaker 9: I was in a band for about fifteen years.
- 11:00Speaker 1: What was the name of the band?
- 11:01Speaker 9: I've had different names over the years.
- 11:03Speaker 1: But what were some of the names.
- 11:05Speaker 9: I can't even remember these names.
- 11:07Speaker 1: I know you can.
- 11:11Speaker 7: The first name of the band, which is probably the
- 11:12Speaker 7: most embarrassing name, was shadow Facts, named after the horse
- 11:15Speaker 7: in Lord of the Rings.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Shadow Facts. So it's like a do you guys like
- 11:21Speaker 1: do like songs in Elvish?
- 11:23Speaker 9: Yes? We did songs in Elvish.
- 11:28Speaker 1: It's been uh, it's been nice chatting with you.
- 11:30Speaker 7: It's been really interesting.
- 11:32Speaker 4: You know.
- 11:33Speaker 7: I'm not sure that it gets us, but I always
- 11:34Speaker 7: enjoy our talks.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Who is this character?
- 11:38Speaker 7: This is everyone I have ever talked to. Yeah, I
- 11:43Speaker 7: can't say that you're what you're going to consider you
- 11:46Speaker 7: for this, but I enjoyed our talk really interesting.
- 11:59Speaker 1: It's always interesting talking to Gregor.
- 12:03Speaker 8: No.
- 12:03Speaker 1: But I mean, but seriously, though, does that seem true
- 12:07Speaker 1: that your generation, that you guys don't feel as defined
- 12:13Speaker 1: by your choices in music like you can like all
- 12:16Speaker 1: the music?
- 12:17Speaker 3: I think when we were younger, though, I remember like
- 12:19Speaker 3: Backstreet Boys versus Sync being a big.
- 12:23Speaker 1: And which were you guys?
- 12:25Speaker 3: I said I was a Backstreet Boys, But then like
- 12:27Speaker 3: a couple of years out, I was like, why did
- 12:29Speaker 3: I think that? Because in Sync's music is way.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Better KAYLEI, I'm the same way.
- 12:34Speaker 5: I think really, like, yes, I think that I had
- 12:36Speaker 5: a vague awareness that like maybe it was like cooler
- 12:39Speaker 5: to say you like the Backstreet Boys, but like I
- 12:42Speaker 5: couldn't even name the Backstreep Boys song and like in
- 12:45Speaker 5: sync is what I listened to.
- 12:47Speaker 1: Yeah, during Quarantine, I've been spending a lot more time
- 12:59Speaker 1: listening to music with Aggie.
- 13:01Speaker 3: What kind of stuff were you guys listening to?
- 13:04Speaker 1: Just a lot of music that I liked when I
- 13:06Speaker 1: was a kid. I played him a clashes should I
- 13:10Speaker 1: stay or should I go? For the first time a
- 13:12Speaker 1: little while ago, and after every song I was asked
- 13:16Speaker 1: what do you think? And like after stay shot, he
- 13:22Speaker 1: was just silent, and I was like, Oggie, like what
- 13:24Speaker 1: what do you think? And he's just like looking off
- 13:27Speaker 1: into the distance, and then he says I think he
- 13:29Speaker 1: should stay, and I was like, oh yeah, and he's
- 13:34Speaker 1: like yeah, Like he was like, it's it's easy, it's easier.
- 13:38Speaker 1: I think he was just imagining how hard it is
- 13:40Speaker 1: for him to go anywhere, especially like now in the
- 13:42Speaker 1: winter in Minnesota, to put on his snowsuit and his boots.
- 13:46Speaker 1: To him, it was just like a referendum on whether
- 13:49Speaker 1: you should go outside in the cold or stay inside
- 13:52Speaker 1: and eat snacks, and he was like, yeah, no, I
- 13:54Speaker 1: think he should stay.
- 13:56Speaker 3: I when I was a little kid, like younger than Augie,
- 14:00Speaker 3: like really like an infant to my dad used to
- 14:02Speaker 3: whenever I was crying, he would play can't touch this,
- 14:06Speaker 3: and then I would stop crying. Oh yeah, you would
- 14:11Speaker 3: like pick me up and dance around and oh yeah.
- 14:15Speaker 1: That's really that's very sweet, look at my heart. Did
- 14:22Speaker 1: you guys have the experience of making mixtapes.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Oh, I only ever made mixed CDs.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I used to make mixtapes like but recording off the radio,
- 14:34Speaker 1: so I would have to hold the tape recorder mike
- 14:37Speaker 1: up to the speaker of a radio, so my father,
- 14:40Speaker 1: like you would hear my father yelling in.
- 14:42Speaker 3: The background, I made a mix. I used to just
- 14:46Speaker 3: make a lot of mixes in high school in general,
- 14:48Speaker 3: And I remember I had this amazing idea where I
- 14:50Speaker 3: was like, it would be so cool to make a
- 14:52Speaker 3: mix where the first letter of each song spells like
- 14:56Speaker 3: will you go to prom with me? And you could
- 14:58Speaker 3: give it to someone to ask them to prom. So
- 15:01Speaker 3: I made it, like years before even my prom would
- 15:04Speaker 3: have happened. And then like I didn't ask anyone to
- 15:07Speaker 3: prom and I never used it for anything.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Do you remember what the songs were that you used
- 15:11Speaker 1: for the letters?
- 15:13Speaker 3: Honestly, I probably have it on my old computer. I
- 15:16Speaker 3: can look.
- 15:17Speaker 1: You gotta like find an occasion to go to a
- 15:19Speaker 1: prom to use that.
- 15:22Speaker 3: I think any occasion in which I'd now go to
- 15:24Speaker 3: a prom would be creepy.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Grounds for legal action.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Yeah, oh yeah, so like I have Under the Bridge
- 15:33Speaker 3: by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. If you guys know
- 15:37Speaker 3: that song gold Lion the yeah, yeah, yeahs if you
- 15:44Speaker 3: guys remember that.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Song, It's gonna tell me what a lot is?
- 15:52Speaker 3: Piatza New York Catcher is the p and prom.
- 15:54Speaker 9: Johnson will play Piazza. I'll catch your you straight? Are Uka?
- 16:02Speaker 3: I want you to want me cheap trick? That's the
- 16:05Speaker 3: I and with what's the m The emin prom is
- 16:14Speaker 3: Marching Bands of Manhattan by Death Cab for Cutie.
- 16:18Speaker 1: What foreign Marching bands?
- 16:21Speaker 6: Large?
- 16:22Speaker 1: Can you sing it? I can't, Stevie, can you?
- 16:27Speaker 6: No?
- 16:27Speaker 5: I don't actually know that song, which, like this is
- 16:30Speaker 5: actually an experience I have often I never know the
- 16:34Speaker 5: songs that people are talking about, Like even growing up,
- 16:38Speaker 5: I have this like very distinct memory of being in
- 16:41Speaker 5: my friend's house and they put on that Maroon five
- 16:45Speaker 5: song This Love.
- 16:46Speaker 2: Do you remember that song?
- 16:48Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 16:49Speaker 5: I'm like they all knew all the words and they
- 16:51Speaker 5: were like, you know, singing along to it, and I
- 16:55Speaker 5: had never heard it before, and I had like no
- 16:57Speaker 5: idea what was going on.
- 16:58Speaker 2: And I felt like shame about it.
- 17:01Speaker 5: And I went home and like listened to that song
- 17:05Speaker 5: on repeat because I was like, it felt really important
- 17:07Speaker 5: that I learn it.
- 17:24Speaker 1: Hey, you mind if I switch gears here for a moment?
- 17:27Speaker 8: Sure?
- 17:28Speaker 1: Do you guys? Ever, I'm just wondering if this is
- 17:33Speaker 1: something that other people do, But do you ever think
- 17:37Speaker 1: about like what songs you would like to be played
- 17:40Speaker 1: at your funeral? Like it's very self indulgent feeling, Like
- 17:44Speaker 1: it's just like when I'm in a very like self
- 17:46Speaker 1: indulgent kind of mood, which is often, I'm thinking that
- 17:48Speaker 1: would be a good song really make everyone cry and
- 17:50Speaker 1: think about me.
- 17:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know if I have a do you
- 17:54Speaker 3: have like a go to answer?
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yeah? What's your go to funeral song?
- 17:58Speaker 1: I actually have like a little bit of a playlist
- 18:01Speaker 1: in my head, so I think, like, do you know
- 18:03Speaker 1: that song? That Groucho Mark song, Hello, I must be going,
- 18:09Speaker 1: oh shockingly, hello, I must be going. I'm here to
- 18:14Speaker 1: say I cannot stay.
- 18:15Speaker 9: I cannot stay.
- 18:17Speaker 1: And I think that would be kind of sweet people,
- 18:19Speaker 1: would you know.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Yeah, Jonathan, if I may be so bold as to produce.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Your funeral, please God willing.
- 18:28Speaker 5: What if at the end of the whole thing, you know,
- 18:30Speaker 5: they were like, well, we just want to thank everybody
- 18:33Speaker 5: for coming and whatever, and then you could have a
- 18:37Speaker 5: son in an empty room come in and really.
- 18:40Speaker 3: It should be like literally, like the person gives the
- 18:44Speaker 3: eulogy and like right as they finished speaking, it's like,
- 18:46Speaker 3: but I'm.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Exactly, I'm glad. I'm glad that the idea of my
- 18:52Speaker 1: funeral is so amusing to you both. What would be
- 18:56Speaker 1: the most disrespectful, Like, let's say you were planning the
- 18:59Speaker 1: funeral for someone you hated.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I think the most disrespectful would be like that song
- 19:04Speaker 3: that used to play on the six Flags commercial.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Dancing ball Uh yeah, yeah?
- 19:18Speaker 5: What about the worst song to be playing at your
- 19:21Speaker 5: failed engagement?
- 19:23Speaker 2: Like you propose, but the person says.
- 19:26Speaker 1: No, and then all of a sudden, the mariachi band
- 19:30Speaker 1: shows up and like strikes up that song they pay
- 19:33Speaker 1: them money to play.
- 19:37Speaker 3: In that kids. I feel like it would just be
- 19:39Speaker 3: like a good like classic like she Loves You or something,
- 19:42Speaker 3: you know, like.
- 19:45Speaker 1: She loves you.
- 19:46Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, but she's walking.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Away and you can't get the Mariachi Bland to stop
- 19:52Speaker 1: playing it.
- 19:54Speaker 3: They're just following you. Chase after and they follow you.
- 20:01Speaker 5: How about I got a feeling that tonight's gonna be
- 20:04Speaker 5: a good night.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Nights, going good night n nights? What about the worst
- 20:16Speaker 2: song to walk down the aisle?
- 20:19Speaker 1: Too? Like, instead of here comes the Bride, you want
- 20:22Speaker 1: to do something a little, a little little less typical.
- 20:25Speaker 3: I feel like, again that six Flag song would be
- 20:28Speaker 3: pretty bad.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Oh my god.
- 20:31Speaker 3: The horn and you actually you're honking a horn while
- 20:34Speaker 3: you walk down the aisle.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Hey, you know, if were you guys enjoying all of
- 20:57Speaker 1: this music that I was spinning for you guys as
- 21:00Speaker 1: we were.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Talking, Yeah, I felt like I was at the club.
- 21:04Speaker 1: You know, if people out there enjoyed those songs and
- 21:07Speaker 1: want to relive the memories, they could go to the
- 21:10Speaker 1: Spotify playlist that we created.
- 21:12Speaker 3: That's right, Yeah, we'll put a link in the show description.
- 21:17Speaker 1: It's called Goldstein's Way Cool Playlist. It's called Goldstein's far
- 21:23Speaker 1: out Hits. No, it's called Goldstein's Party, party faves it is.
- 21:29Speaker 2: That is what it's called.
- 21:30Speaker 1: To get the party going. Yeah, you know, speaking of music,
- 21:39Speaker 1: I spoke to a man named Glenn. His mom, Madeline,
- 21:46Speaker 1: is ninety four years old, and a couple of months ago,
- 21:49Speaker 1: she was moving from the house that she lived in
- 21:52Speaker 1: for many years into a smaller apartment, and during the
- 21:56Speaker 1: move she came across this box full of seventy eights,
- 22:00Speaker 1: this long forgotten box of these records of her singing
- 22:06Speaker 1: when she was just twenty years old.
- 22:08Speaker 4: Wow.
- 22:08Speaker 1: Yeah, this is back in nineteen forty six. And Glenn
- 22:14Speaker 1: was telling me that when his mom was young, she
- 22:17Speaker 1: loved to sing, but since her family was so poor,
- 22:20Speaker 1: she had to give up the prospect of having a
- 22:23Speaker 1: singing career in order to support her family.
- 22:26Speaker 6: They were really, really poor. My grandparents were Russian immigrants.
- 22:32Speaker 6: My grandfather couldn't read or write. He sold bananas on
- 22:37Speaker 6: a push cart, that.
- 22:38Speaker 8: Was what he did.
- 22:40Speaker 6: Things are tough, you know, like a birthday gift sometimes
- 22:45Speaker 6: was like a piece of fruit. Yeah, I mean, that's
- 22:48Speaker 6: how bad things were. And then my grandmother was raising
- 22:52Speaker 6: five kids and my mother. She loved to sing, and
- 22:56Speaker 6: that was wonderful. But there was a certain reality to life,
- 22:59Speaker 6: you know.
- 23:00Speaker 1: When you took these records out and you played them
- 23:03Speaker 1: for the first time. Even that might have been a trick,
- 23:06Speaker 1: right to find a record player and one that played
- 23:08Speaker 1: at the seventies. It's exactly correct.
- 23:11Speaker 6: We finally found somebody who had a record player that
- 23:14Speaker 6: could play seventy eights. And when I heard him, oh
- 23:18Speaker 6: my goodness, it was wonderful, my mother said, She asked meatesaid,
- 23:23Speaker 6: the last time she had listened to the discs or
- 23:26Speaker 6: maybe sixty sixty five years ago, just absolutely incredible to
- 23:32Speaker 6: hear her sing at the age of twenty.
- 23:34Speaker 1: In listening to the songs for the first time. It
- 23:38Speaker 1: was a tinged with a little bit of sadness for
- 23:40Speaker 1: you to just hear her.
- 23:41Speaker 6: Yeah, it was because I knew how much she always
- 23:45Speaker 6: loved to sing, and I know that if things were different,
- 23:50Speaker 6: then maybe she could have pursued a career. And it
- 23:57Speaker 6: just gave me insight into a whole different aspect of
- 24:00Speaker 6: her life that she had kind of tucked away, you know.
- 24:05Speaker 8: And I just.
- 24:07Speaker 6: Want my mother to have a little happiness that let
- 24:13Speaker 6: me she's in the other room. Let me go get
- 24:15Speaker 6: her and so she can say hello to you.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Hello, Madeleine. Oh, yes, I can't hear you. I think
- 24:29Speaker 1: you're a little far away.
- 24:30Speaker 8: Jonathan, Hi, Oh there you are?
- 24:34Speaker 1: Hello?
- 24:35Speaker 8: Good?
- 24:35Speaker 4: Good? Hello? How are you?
- 24:37Speaker 1: I'm good? I'm good. I was just talking with Glenn
- 24:39Speaker 1: a little bit about the discovery of the seventy eight.
- 24:43Speaker 3: How do you like that?
- 24:44Speaker 8: Yes? Yes, I just loved to sing and I didn't
- 24:48Speaker 8: know anything other than that I wanted to sing.
- 24:52Speaker 1: What did it feel like for you to have to
- 24:55Speaker 1: give that up?
- 24:59Speaker 8: Well, I sort of expected not to get too much
- 25:03Speaker 8: of anything. You know, times were not too good, so
- 25:06Speaker 8: I sort of developed a maybe a wall in front
- 25:10Speaker 8: of me that don't be disappointed. I knew it couldn't be.
- 25:14Speaker 8: I was hoping it would be, and I just took
- 25:19Speaker 8: it as.
- 25:19Speaker 1: It came along over the years. I mean, were there
- 25:22Speaker 1: times when you'd see other singers getting famous where it
- 25:27Speaker 1: made you kind of think about yourself a little bit
- 25:30Speaker 1: or you feel.
- 25:31Speaker 8: I would say to myself, I'm as good as them.
- 25:36Speaker 1: And when you listen to yourself, do you think do
- 25:38Speaker 1: you feel a connection to that person that you used
- 25:41Speaker 1: to be or does it feel like just a whole
- 25:43Speaker 1: other person.
- 25:45Speaker 8: Well, I can almost think back to those days and
- 25:49Speaker 8: feel when I'm singing your song and phrase, I just
- 25:54Speaker 8: remember doing it.
- 25:56Speaker 4: Wow, amazing.
- 25:57Speaker 8: Yes, yes, yes, after all those years, it's a good feeling.
- 26:02Speaker 8: I just sit back there and just listen. I relax
- 26:06Speaker 8: on the chair on the couch, and I hear something
- 26:09Speaker 8: different every time I hear it, a different note. How
- 26:12Speaker 8: I sang the note?
- 26:14Speaker 1: Huh?
- 26:14Speaker 8: And I smile a lot.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yes, yes. Is there something about these listening
- 26:20Speaker 1: to these records that feels like a time machine.
- 26:24Speaker 8: You're right, you're right, absolutely a good time machine.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Oh you mean that brings you back.
- 26:30Speaker 8: Good things, a good things. It's bringing good, good thoughts,
- 26:34Speaker 8: good ideas, good everything.
- 26:35Speaker 1: It brings you back the good memories.
- 26:37Speaker 8: That's right, that's right. We don't the other ones we
- 26:40Speaker 8: threw away many years ago, you see, the bad ones.
- 26:43Speaker 9: We're just looking for the good.
- 26:46Speaker 8: You have to think that way.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I don't know if you're comfortable doing this.
- 26:51Speaker 1: But is there any way that you would be able
- 26:54Speaker 1: to favor us with a few lines.
- 26:56Speaker 8: And you want me to sing it to you now?
- 26:58Speaker 1: I mean, if you had, if you had it in you,
- 27:00Speaker 1: I don't want to put you on the spot.
- 27:01Speaker 4: No terror star from out the sky and the sky
- 27:09Speaker 4: you little tear a pedals from the roads and the rooms.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Sleep soon take your heart away from me. I almost
- 27:26Speaker 4: forgot the words. It's a long time ago.
- 27:30Speaker 9: Forgive me.
- 27:39Speaker 10: Tamera.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Start from.
- 27:44Speaker 2: God and look guy.
- 27:54Speaker 10: Pedal and weep.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Take a from.
- 28:12Speaker 10: And mine will surely pray.
- 28:18Speaker 8: My life is yours.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Sutay soon please deep.
- 28:25Speaker 10: A spark so no, you take theings from.
- 28:36Speaker 4: So that they can lie?
- 28:42Speaker 10: Who take metion, throw.
- 28:48Speaker 8: And leave?
- 28:50Speaker 3: Just stop side.
- 28:54Speaker 6: All you.
- 28:59Speaker 8: Do, this is what I bag.

- 29:55Speaker 8: You don't thank your lo.
- 30:03Speaker 10: From.
