- 0:00Hello and welcome back to a hamster with a.
- 0:03Blum Pen Knife, The Doctor Who Commentary Podcast.
- 0:07Which today won't be a commentary podcast, but a
- 0:11celebration of one of the, I'm going to say, greatest
- 0:18contributors and supporters of Hamster over the last couple of
- 0:22years. You know, we've tipped 100,000
- 0:25listens now, which is incredible.
- 0:28And right back there at the start was the wonderful,
- 0:31wonderful Joe Short, who came on and did a fabulous commentary on
- 0:37Sleep No More, which I had some terrific feedback about.
- 0:41You know, she's not afraid of a challenge.
- 0:43She took hold of one of the least celebrated episodes of
- 0:46Doctor Who and just went to town on telling me why it was great,
- 0:52which hot guys were in it, and why everybody that doesn't like
- 0:56Peter Capody can just fuck off. She's at the brain of Spock on
- 1:02Twitter, so please go and check her out.
- 1:05And she has compiled a top ten list of her favorite stories.
- 1:11And so we're going to spread the love for Joe's favorite stories
- 1:15now. And I'm doing this because Joe
- 1:19isn't having a great day today. And she reached out and said
- 1:22that on Twitter. And one of the joys of being
- 1:24able to do this is that you can talk directly to the people that
- 1:28are listening and hopefully, hopefully make a little bit of a
- 1:33difference to that day. So Joe, let's see what your top
- 1:38ten or two stories are. She did say she made this up on
- 1:40the fly, and they're in no particular order.
- 1:44There's a lot of love for poetry here, so I expect some terrible
- 1:46impressions. Here we go.
- 1:49We have got, Oh my God, the demons.
- 1:53Joe, since the Brigadier is your senior officer, you could show
- 1:57him a little bit of respect. The Demons is wonderful, isn't
- 2:01it? I think episode one, you know,
- 2:03might be one of the best ever. Certainly one of the most
- 2:07atmospheric episode ones. The sides are there for all the
- 2:10sea. I cast the rooms only this
- 2:13morning. This is only the beginning.
- 2:19It's got some terrific location work.
- 2:21I think it might be Chris Barry's best direction in the
- 2:24show as well. I mean, it's got Roger Delgado
- 2:27as a vicar, yo AOA, all the Devil's Malt, malt of tenure.
- 2:34Grab me. And yeah, anyway, you get it.
- 2:37I mean, it's pure Barry less, isn't it?
- 2:41But I don't think we can forget Christopher Barry's
- 2:43contributions as well. And what a wonderful turn for
- 2:47all the unit regulars as well. And I was just bitching about
- 2:50Benson and Yates. The other day, but actually
- 2:53seeing them in cities in this and sort of men of action,
- 2:58they're pretty good in this. They are pretty damn good in
- 3:01this, especially like Benton and Miss Hawthorne.
- 3:05I know Lucy Mccoll's a big fan too, especially when miss.
- 3:09Oh my God, I haven't even mentioned Miss Hawthorne.
- 3:12When she goes what? Is it?
- 3:14I hit him with my reticule On these occasions.
- 3:17The outcomes are certainty. The Demons is fantastic.
- 3:22Onto the Sea Devils. Now, how about a little bit of
- 3:30rough Cutter marmalade? I always think about Walker.
- 3:33You know, when I think about the Sea Devils.
- 3:35Oh, he's vile, isn't he? Especially vile to Jane Blyth,
- 3:39who's a very nice female character.
- 3:42And there are two female. Characters in this story.
- 3:45Yay, the 70s is. This an inferior version of
- 3:50Doctor Who and the Silerians. I mean, Silerians ain't on Joe's
- 3:53list, so I'm guessing she thinks this is the better.
- 3:57I mean, it's full on Roger Delgado, watching the clangers
- 4:00and running rings around just about everybody.
- 4:05Doesn't he look hot in that admiral's costume?
- 4:07Oh my God, he looks amazing. I think it's probably the most
- 4:12robust production of the 70s because they had all of that
- 4:17help from the Navy. You've got not only all the
- 4:21hardware you need to sell this, but you've also got all that
- 4:24stock footage as well, which you can tell the stock footage, but
- 4:27still makes this feel like, in classic Doctor Who terms,
- 4:31cinematic high action cow. Great.
- 4:36Fun Monsters. Yeah, it's a really, really
- 4:39fantastic story. Quintessential John Perry, I
- 4:43would say. Oh my God, her next choice.
- 4:46Boom. Boom, boom, boom.
- 4:54That's the side Man going down the sewers.
- 4:56It's the eight episodes of Spyfy.
- 4:59Goodness the invasion. Featuring oh man, she likes a
- 5:04good villain, didn't she? Because you got Tobias Vaughn in
- 5:06this one park. Their relationship?
- 5:12My God. It sustains the eight episodes
- 5:14on its own, let alone having the Q as a button team of the
- 5:18Doctor, Jamie and Zoe in there too.
- 5:22Oh God, it's fabulous, isn't it? And Douglas Canfield's direction
- 5:25is a car above anything that is going on there at the moment.
- 5:29He can even make a chase and a lift shaft seem dynamic, but I.
- 5:33Think the episode where that ends.
- 5:36I think it's. Six that ends with the
- 5:39Hypnobeam, you know, coming out and the sideman coming down the
- 5:42stairs. And that episode starts with the
- 5:45sideman sort of going Rd. down the sewers.
- 5:49That psychotic sideman that might be, you know, when you
- 5:51choose out sort of single episodes of Doctor Who that are
- 5:55incredible, that is one of the that's like a top ten of all
- 6:00time Doctor Who single episodes. Next up we have The Invasion of
- 6:07the Dinosaurs, a story that Saiha and I reevaluated
- 6:11recently, well actually about two years ago.
- 6:15And I think it's one of the best part ways by far.
- 6:18And yes, including the model dinosaurs.
- 6:20I absolutely love the little diorama sets that they put them
- 6:23in. They are so cute.
- 6:26But you you know you've got a a story full of suspense and
- 6:29mystery and intrigue which is extremely well directed by Paddy
- 6:33Russell and impeccably cast anyone who says pert we late,
- 6:38pert we isn't great. His performance and this is
- 6:41brilliant as well. He gets to do comedy and drama.
- 6:45You know the moral message at the end.
- 6:47But best of all, you've got Elizabeth Sladen, who is driving
- 6:51this plot, and you know she can make sequences like that.
- 6:54Tyrannosaurus Rex coming alive in the warehouse.
- 6:58It seemed like the most suspendful moment in Doctor Who.
- 7:01That's how good her acting is. She can make those models look
- 7:05as if they're really impressive. Invasion of that, I think it's
- 7:10pretty pious. I mean you've.
- 7:11Even got Renee. What are you doing with your
- 7:14arms around that servant girl Edith in that episode?
- 7:19Next up. The Time Monster.
- 7:21Oh, Joe, I love you. I mean, there's a couple of
- 7:26great points to say about the Time Monster.
- 7:29And I'm not just talking about Ingrid Pitt's cleavage.
- 7:34I mean. It's an everything but the
- 7:35kitchen sink story. There's a hell of a lot thrown
- 7:39at it. You've got those sequences in
- 7:41the Institute with Tom Tit. You've got the sequences in the
- 7:45TARDIS, which is TARDIS is we've been TARDIS is long before
- 7:49Logopolis did it. And you have got the the
- 7:53Shakespearean in inverted commas, Atlantis scenes at the
- 7:58end of the story, which are unforgettable for many reasons.
- 8:03I think you're very bold to put that in your top ten and I love
- 8:06you for it. I mean, it's per way.
- 8:10So it's effortlessly watchable and you know it's full of
- 8:14fabulous pool. Bernard Crash zooms into
- 8:18everything. Okay on to something that not a
- 8:22lot of people would disagree with.
- 8:24Terror of the Zigons with the evil and sinister Sister Lamont,
- 8:30who gave me terrible nightmares as a child.
- 8:33Don't worry Doctor Sullivan, you're going to be very well.
- 8:36Taken care of. You know the bit where he goes?
- 8:39No, no, no. Or even worse, that bit where he
- 8:43chases Sarah Jane down the street into the barn.
- 8:47We're in fucking psycho territory.
- 8:49He's going out there. She's attacking her with a
- 8:51pitchfork, and I was. Watching this at about 8 years
- 8:54old, my mother was very irresponsible.
- 8:59How how many good things can you say about Terror of the Xygons?
- 9:02There's so many good things you can have the Sussex, which looks
- 9:06absolutely atmospheric and gorgeous and does double
- 9:09brilliantly for Scotland, and the gorgeous, atmospheric score
- 9:14by Jeffrey Berg, Bergen Bergen. Something like that.
- 9:18You've got the, the, I mean, these are all brilliantly
- 9:21directed stories. Time monster.
- 9:24We'll let it pass. These are all brilliantly, but
- 9:26this is Douglas coming for that is absolute.
- 9:29But he's been away for a while and he's just on form.
- 9:32I don't even mind the stop motion scares.
- 9:35And, you know, I mean, he's a bit funny when he pops his head
- 9:38up the Thames at the end of the story.
- 9:40But, you know, that's just to remind us that we are still
- 9:42watching Doctor Who. Oh.
- 9:44And Liz Slaton's brilliant in this as well, isn't she?
- 9:47You know, the bit where she pokes her tongue out or blows
- 9:50the dust off the shelves. Or say Harry, is it you?
- 9:56Is it really you? That's very, very funny.
- 10:01Oh, she's gone. From Zygons to Zygons, here's an
- 10:05interesting choice. It's the Zygon Inversion and the
- 10:08Zygon Invasion from I couldn't have got that wrong is.
- 10:12It the Zygon Invasion and then the Zygon Inversion look, it's
- 10:15too Zygon episodes back-to-back. Very dark.
- 10:19Quite. A little too adult, I'd say in
- 10:24places, but again, really strikingly well directed.
- 10:32You've got a fabulously sinister performance from Jenna Coleman,
- 10:37who effectively is written out of the story and gets to play
- 10:40the villain Bonnie. I think mostly she probably
- 10:44loves this because Capote is so excellent in it and has one of
- 10:48his standout moments from his era, which is him at the end
- 10:52giving that incredible speech about.
- 10:55Sitting down, and which is something we can all learn a lot
- 11:01from. Yeah, I these are probably my
- 11:06favorites from Series 9, which is a season I don't like.
- 11:10I don't know if it pulls everything off and I do think it
- 11:13says some dodgy things politically, but there's so much
- 11:17to talk about in that two parter.
- 11:21There's a lot of potential in there and it's doing interesting
- 11:24things. So I'll always salute Doctor Who
- 11:26doing that. Joe, you're going to have to
- 11:28tell me why you love that one so much.
- 11:29I'm really intrigued. And O K2 more we've got here.
- 11:33Terror of the Autumns. Amazing.
- 11:37The Master. He's an unimaginative plotter.
- 11:41You've ruined at your hand. Festive bumbender pert Way is so
- 11:45spectacularly rude in this he's hilarious.
- 11:48I know people don't like him in Season 8, but I think he's.
- 11:51Fucking hilarious and terribly autisms.
- 11:56Rob Schumann is right. It is like Barry.
- 11:58Let's has he in a massive, massive packet of skills and
- 12:03gone to town with the the color aspect of Doctor Who.
- 12:07I mean this is big bold comic book Doctor Who.
- 12:11You could do like comic panels from the various madness that
- 12:16occurs during Terry deals, but it's also Robert Holmes that is
- 12:19naughtiest as well. And he's like yeah, I'm going to
- 12:22fucking scare life out of these kids.
- 12:25We're going to have evil blank faced policeman, psychotic
- 12:28killer dolls, you know, telephone calls that come to
- 12:31life and strangle people, plastic daffodils that spray
- 12:36cellophane over people's mouths. I mean, that's very adult.
- 12:39The bit where she's got the cellophane over her mouth, that
- 12:42is properly, properly scary. That bit that scares me the
- 12:46most. So is that autumn that gets
- 12:48knocked? Down that hill and then gets up
- 12:50again straight away and comes back after him.
- 12:54Really scary stuff. It might be Barry, Let's his
- 12:57best direction, you know, because he is was his second
- 13:02story, isn't it? Technically Inferno he did as
- 13:04well, but I think he's really looking to impress with that
- 13:09one. So he's going to town with CSO.
- 13:12You know, this fabulous new invention that allows Doctor Who
- 13:14to go anywhere and everywhere. He's packs it full of action.
- 13:18It's just got some really striking colorful imagery in it
- 13:23and and scenes in it that people just never forgot and we're
- 13:27still talking about them now. So yeah, that's a great pick.
- 13:30I haven't done that for Hamster yet.
- 13:31I should do that one. And finally, the story that I'm
- 13:35doing right this second, and I understand that's Mind of Evil.
- 13:41Oh no, sorry. It's Dana.
- 13:44Dana as Craig Williams and I are discovering at the moment, it
- 13:51is. Just packed full of goodness,
- 13:54Nicholas Courtney is twinkly best John Pertway with two
- 13:58enormous problems to solve. Joe Grant.
- 14:01Massively competent taking on a bunch of prisoners that are
- 14:05rising, you know, far. Pointing guns about Tim Coons
- 14:11incredible direction of the action sequences, which is as
- 14:14probably as polished as action ever got in Dobsa Who And yeah,
- 14:20just just. Does it sustain 6 episodes?
- 14:24I think it does, but only because it has got those two
- 14:28tenuously linked pretty Chinese girl indeed plot lines.
- 14:34But yeah, God this is fabulous. It's bit of a call back to the
- 14:39previous season, and nothing at all like Terror in the Autumns,
- 14:44but just for partly spectacular, spectacular rudeness.
- 14:50I love it. I know people hate that stuff.
- 14:53But there's something about his his earnestness, and how he
- 14:57doesn't realize just how awful he's being.
- 15:01If I was a scientist, what does he say in that?
- 15:05In that meeting, people that talk about infallibility, jail
- 15:09are usually on very shaky grounds.
- 15:12Is wonderful. And Joe Short, you are wonderful
- 15:16as well. And I hope this is sort of 15 to
- 15:2020 minutes that has made you smile today, that we've been
- 15:23able to celebrate Doctor Who that you love, and I hope
- 15:27everyone else has enjoyed listening to it too.
- 15:29If anybody else wants to send me their top ten favorite stories,
- 15:33I'd love to do more mini episodes like this celebrating
- 15:36the stuff that you love. So please send them in.
- 15:39But for now, Joe Short, you are fabulous.
- 15:44And thank you for being a supporter of this podcast.
