- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37You do witness betrayal. You do witness people who will
- 0:40turn their backs on you. Everyone is not going to be in
- 0:43favor of the way that we walk before the Lord.
- 0:47Everyone's not going to be in favor of that.
- 0:49And we have to be prepared for that and just know that we are
- 0:52protected by Him. We are with Him, He's with us as
- 0:56we go through these things, He is with us.
- 1:00So he says yes, and all who will who desire to live godly in
- 1:05Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
- 1:08I think most people just want to live their lives.
- 1:10I really do. For some people that means a
- 1:12white picket fence, while for others it means chasing their
- 1:15dreams, whatever they may be. But I don't think anyone ever
- 1:19asks to live a life full of trouble and difficulty.
- 1:23In Pastor Lewis's message today, he warns you that when you
- 1:26choose to live for Jesus, you're going to experience difficulty.
- 1:31The. Reward is worth it, but the
- 1:33challenges are fierce. This life will be filled with
- 1:37trouble, but heaven is waiting on the other side now.
- 1:40Here's Pastor Lewis in the book of Romans Chapter 9 with today's
- 1:44edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:47So Paul does love. In fact, he loves so much that
- 1:50in Romans Chapter 9 Paul said of his brethren.
- 1:54He said, I wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my
- 1:59brethren, for my brethren. And then the 1st Thessalonians 2
- 2:03and 8. He says we not only imparted the
- 2:05gospel to you, but also our own lives because you became dear to
- 2:12us. So Paul understood love, and he
- 2:16definitely understood that it was necessary to have that agape
- 2:20love that can only come through the Holy Spirit in order for him
- 2:24to do what it is that God had called him to do.
- 2:27And that's the same for us as well.
- 2:29It's the mark of a Christian. That's why Jesus said that.
- 2:31This is how you'll know that we're all Christians because we
- 2:34have love one for another. When people come in this house,
- 2:38I love the fact that people will say that, man, you know, you can
- 2:41tell that they love each other and they should be able to say
- 2:44that. They should be able to say that
- 2:47and I know that I feel love when I come into this house.
- 2:50I feel love. Thank God for that.
- 2:53He goes on and he talks about the perseverance, you know,
- 2:56being steadfast. Verse 11, he says the
- 2:59persecutions, afflictions which happened to me at Antioch.
- 3:02Paul was very clear about the fact that he did go through a
- 3:05number of persecutions and sufferings that he did at
- 3:09different places where he would preach the gospel.
- 3:12When he went to Antioch, he taught the gospel there.
- 3:15When he went into the synagogue's for a number of
- 3:17people who believed. And as a result of that, the
- 3:20unbelieving Jews, they wanted to stir up the people, stir up the
- 3:24Gentiles that were there, and they ended up rising up in
- 3:28persecution against Paul and his companions and they had to
- 3:31leave. And they went into Iconium.
- 3:34And when they went to Iconium, the very same thing.
- 3:36He taught the Scriptures and Iconium, he taught the word of
- 3:39God and he preached the gospel and there were many people who
- 3:43heard the gospel and they listened and they became, and,
- 3:46and they put their faith in Jesus Christ.
- 3:48And as a result of putting their faith in Jesus Christ, they
- 3:51began to gather together and, and, and, and, and have an
- 3:54assembly themselves. Well, the people who lived there
- 3:57who were not believers didn't like that either.
- 3:59So they persecuted Paul and wanted to stone him and ran him
- 4:03out of Iconium, Iconium. And then when Paul got the
- 4:05Lystra, it was so bad that when Paul preached the gospel there
- 4:09and I and Lystra, which is probably where Timothy heard the
- 4:12gospel from Paul the first time, we understand that there was the
- 4:15people from Antioch that got together with the people from
- 4:20Iconium and all of them came down to Lystra and they began to
- 4:24want to persecute Paul. That's how bad it was for Paul.
- 4:28But in every situation, he continued to put his life on the
- 4:32line to share the gospel because he believed that the one that he
- 4:37believed in was able to keep him, was able to keep him, and
- 4:43so he did what God called him to do.
- 4:46It may be sometimes where it seems hairy or seems dangerous
- 4:50for us to share the gospel or seem that it may cost us
- 4:53something if we share the gospel.
- 4:56But we have to believe that the one that we're serving is
- 4:59greater than anyone else. And He's able to keep us.
- 5:02He's able to protect us. He's able to deliver us from any
- 5:07situation that we may run into as a result of being faithful to
- 5:12him. So he gets to Lystra and there
- 5:15he is stoned. So Paul witnessed that.
- 5:17He witnessed being stoned in. And it's possibility, don't know
- 5:20for sure because the Bible never really says so, but it's a
- 5:24possibility that when he was there in Lystra and when they
- 5:27stoned him and they thought he was dead, then they took him
- 5:30outside of the city and their disciples gathered around him
- 5:34and they suppose that he was dead, That it was a possibility
- 5:37that maybe he was truly dead at that particular time.
- 5:40And maybe we don't. Again, we don't know because the
- 5:43Bible doesn't say that. But that could have been where
- 5:45he actually had the experience of the 3rd heaven during that
- 5:50particular time. He could have had that
- 5:51experience at that particular time where he went into the 3rd
- 5:54heaven and witnessed the things that he was not even able to
- 5:57talk about, but he was stoned. He was thought to be dead.
- 6:01But then he got up. And again, because of his
- 6:04steadfastness or his perseverance, because of his
- 6:07love and because of his faithfulness, Paul got up and
- 6:11went right back into the same city that they had actually
- 6:15stoned him and continued to do the work that God had called him
- 6:19to do. What an example of
- 6:21steadfastness. What an example of someone who's
- 6:24just relentless to do what it is that God has called him to do.
- 6:28Lord, give me that steadfastness.
- 6:31Give me that relentlessness, that fearlessness in you,
- 6:35Father, so that I can, under any circumstance, do your will.
- 6:39And then in verse 12, Paul makes it clear to Timothy, I mean,
- 6:42this is this is not something that you probably want to put on
- 6:45your mirror or your refrigerator when you get up in the morning.
- 6:48Verse 12, yes, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will
- 6:53suffer persecution. That's probably not a good
- 6:57motivation speech for those who you know or want to serve the
- 7:01Lord. I mean, he you probably would
- 7:03have thought that Paul or you know, will want to say something
- 7:06a little bit more encouraging, but Paul was a straight shooter
- 7:10and his attitude was I'm going to give you the truth because
- 7:13you know what? Jesus Christ gave us the truth
- 7:16when he talked about, you know, following him.
- 7:19And if you go to the 10th chapter of Matthew just for a
- 7:222nd 10th chapter of Matthew, Jesus makes a very interesting
- 7:28statement over here, Tim chapter over here in verse 16, He says,
- 7:32behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves.
- 7:35Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves, but
- 7:38beware of men for they will deliver you up.
- 7:41And this is his rallying speech to get them to be motivated to
- 7:43go out and serve him. They're going to deliver you up
- 7:46to councils. They're going to scourge you in
- 7:48the synagogues. You will be brought before
- 7:51governors and and kings for my name's sake.
- 7:54He goes on and say you'll be delivered up, but don't worry
- 7:57because we'll give you what to speak at that particular time
- 8:00for it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak
- 8:03for it is not you who will speak, but the spirit of your
- 8:07father who speaks in you. And then in 21, he says, now
- 8:10your brother will deliver you up to death or your father is going
- 8:14to deliver his children up and children's going to rise up
- 8:17against their parents. I mean, that's not what you
- 8:19would call a real motivational speech, you know, to get someone
- 8:22to serve you. But however, that is what
- 8:26serving the Lord is about. You do witness portrayal.
- 8:29You do witness people who will turn their backs on you.
- 8:33Everyone is not going to be in favor of the way that we walk
- 8:36before the Lord. Everyone's not going to be in
- 8:38favor of that and we have to be prepared for that and just know
- 8:43that we are protected by him. We are with him, He's with us as
- 8:47we go through these things, He is with us.
- 8:50So he says yes, and all who will, who desire to live godly
- 8:55in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.
- 8:58But he also says, if you look at the verse before that, he says
- 9:02and out of them all the Lord delivered me.
- 9:05So even through all those things that Paul went through at the
- 9:09bottom there at verse 11, he says out of them all the Lord
- 9:13delivered me. So in spite of the fact that
- 9:15we're going to suffer persecution, we serve the one
- 9:18who was able and who will deliver us out of all of those
- 9:23situations. And yeah, Paul came out of
- 9:25almost every situation until the Lord was ready for him to come
- 9:28home. And then in verse 13 we change
- 9:31gears again and Paul says, but evil men and imposters will go
- 9:37worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.
- 9:41And that is the reason why everyone who will live godly
- 9:44will suffer persecution because men are evil, men are wicked and
- 9:50they are imposters and they will.
- 9:52And those imposters mean that they are swindlers or sorcerers
- 9:56or, or they are men under demonic influence.
- 10:00And, and they are going to grow worse and worse, deceiving and
- 10:04being deceived. I mean, that's what we're going
- 10:06to have to deal with. So we're going to feel
- 10:09persecution to some degree. We're going to feel it.
- 10:11Now there are countries, as Clark has talked about several
- 10:15times, there are countries where people are being killed,
- 10:18beheaded almost every day, you know, for their faith, for their
- 10:23faith, imprisoned for their faith.
- 10:26I mean, they have to hide to do what we're doing right now.
- 10:28They got to put themselves in underground to do the things
- 10:31that we're doing right now that we can do freely.
- 10:34There will come a time where we will be suffering persecution.
- 10:37In fact, the attack is on right now, particularly against our
- 10:42kids. There's an attack on kids,
- 10:45parents. There's an attack on parents
- 10:48because you, if you do not take on the world's view of the
- 10:55LGBTQ, transgender and all those things, if you don't take on the
- 10:59world view, there are people who are putting bills in place that
- 11:04will give consequences to parents who will not back that
- 11:08ungodly stance. Let me read something to you.
- 11:12Just did a little research on that and this came out just
- 11:15recently. This is back in November of this
- 11:17year. There was a woman who put
- 11:18together a bill, a delegate from out of Virginia, Elizabeth
- 11:23Gunsman of Prince William County, and she intended parents
- 11:28to face abuse charges for not affirming their LGBTQ child.
- 11:35And her bill would expand. Her bill would actually expand
- 11:39the state's definition of child abuse and neglect to include
- 11:43listen to this, to include parents who do not affirm their
- 11:47child's gender identity or sexual orientation.
- 11:52Here's the chilling part. One of the most crucial moments
- 11:56of the interview. They interviewed this woman.
- 11:58It came when a man by the name of Minoc posed this question to
- 12:02Guzman. What could be the penalties of
- 12:05the investigation or what penalties what the investigation
- 12:08includes? If a parent is not affirming of
- 12:12their LGBTQ child, what could be the consequence?
- 12:17This is what she said. Well, first we would have to
- 12:21complete an investigation. It could be a felony, it could
- 12:26be a misdemeanor. But we know that ACPS and I had
- 12:30to look up what that was Child Protective Services.
- 12:34I guess if a person put on a child protective service,
- 12:37anything inquiry into anybody, it's on your record, regardless
- 12:41of whether it's founded or not, it's on your record.
- 12:44So a Child Protective Services could mean or could harm your
- 12:49employment, it could harm their education because nowadays many
- 12:53people do a CPS database search before offering employment.
- 12:59So what is based what they're basically saying is this, if Big
- 13:03Brother or this LGBTQ or the government, if they can't find a
- 13:08way to charge conservative parents with a felony, at the
- 13:12very least the government and its partners in the professions
- 13:16that mean social work counselors, psychologists and
- 13:19all people who work with kids, those advocates between kids and
- 13:22parents will see to it that you never work again.
- 13:27Note clearly the threat of using even Acps investigation to ruin
- 13:32parents. So that is exactly the attitude
- 13:36right now. They are Rooney.
- 13:37They want to scare parents into capitulating or into being
- 13:42resigned to just follow whatever it is that their kids are
- 13:45saying. And that's why Paul's saying,
- 13:47look, you've watched me, you have seen me, you have heard my
- 13:53doctrine. Don't sway from those things.
- 13:57And he's saying it to us. He's encouraging us.
- 13:59Don't sway from the word of God. He who is in US is greater than
- 14:04He that is in the world, right? He that is in you is greater
- 14:08than He that is in the world. He that is in you is greater
- 14:12than He that is in the world. He that is in you and in you is
- 14:15greater than He that is in the world.
- 14:18We don't have to fall to that. God will keep us.
- 14:22He will keep us. And he goes on and he says, but
- 14:25you must continue. Paul's encouraging him now, but
- 14:28you must continue on the things that you have heard and things
- 14:30that you have learned and been assured of knowing from whom you
- 14:34have learned them, knowing what you've learned, Timothy.
- 14:37And it wasn't just Paul that Timothy has learned the word of
- 14:39God from. Timothy has learned the word of
- 14:42God from Paul. He's learned it first of all
- 14:44from his grandmother Lois, from his mother Eunice.
- 14:47He's learned the word of God. He's learned it from Paul and
- 14:51from seeing it in action with Paul and silence and being able
- 14:55to see other believers as well. Verse 15.
- 14:57And that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures which
- 15:02are able to make you wise for salvation through faith, which
- 15:06is in Christ Jesus, the Holy Scriptures, or in other words,
- 15:09the sacred writings, Timothy, you have known them from the
- 15:13time that you were a child, and they're able to make you wise.
- 15:18They're able to make you wise for salvation.
- 15:21James. James chapter 1 in verse 2021
- 15:27says simply this. Therefore, lay aside all
- 15:31filthiness and overflow wickedness, and receive with
- 15:35meekness the implanted word which is able to save your
- 15:40souls. There's power in the Word of
- 15:42God. Now also keep in mind that as
- 15:45he's talking to Timothy, Timothy only had the Old Testament
- 15:49scriptures. They only had the Old Testament.
- 15:52They had the New Testament this time.
- 15:54So when he's talking about the Word of God that is able to save
- 15:56your souls, he's talking about Old Testament scriptures.
- 16:00Well, we know from history that people have been saved by just
- 16:06listening to Old Testament scriptures.
- 16:09In the book of Acts chapter 8, Philip left a huge revival in
- 16:13Samaria and was called by the Holy Spirit down to a lonely Rd.
- 16:17going down from Jerusalem to Gaza where he found there a
- 16:21eunuch, an Ethiopian eunuch. He gets up in the cart with this
- 16:25Ethiopian eunuch who was reading the book of Isaiah that he
- 16:28didn't even understand. Philip began to preach to him
- 16:32right from the 53rd chapter of the book of Isaiah and preach
- 16:37the gospel to this man and he got saved.
- 16:41I also know another situation where the Old Testament was
- 16:44preached and people got saved. Back in 1998, a pat, my late
- 16:51pastor by the name of Reverend Archie Dennis Junior, he
- 16:54preached A sermon from the book of Proverbs, chapter 6, and he
- 17:01began to preach on the strange woman or the unvirtuous woman,
- 17:06the adulterous woman. And as he's preaching this
- 17:10sermon, the Lord opened the eyes of not only myself, but also my
- 17:16wife's eyes, opened our eyes, and we both stood up in
- 17:22repentance. After hearing a sermon preached
- 17:25on the book of Proverbs, chapter 6, God used those scriptures to
- 17:30open our eyes and to cause us to see that we were sinners in need
- 17:35of a Savior. We put our trust in Jesus Christ
- 17:38that day and we've never looked back.
- 17:40And that was from the Old Testament Scriptures.
- 17:43There is power not just in the New Testament, not just in the
- 17:46Old Testament, but in the whole council of God.
- 17:49In the whole council of God, all Scripture is given by
- 17:53inspiration of God. That means all Scripture is God
- 17:56breathed. It actually means all scriptures
- 17:58God breathed. It's breathed out by God.
- 18:00This is not just an ordinary book that some men got together
- 18:03and wrote. This is a book that was breathed
- 18:05out by God himself. That's why it's so powerful and
- 18:09it is profitable for doctrine, for correction, for instruction
- 18:14and righteousness, that the man of God may be complete and
- 18:18thoroughly equipped for every good work.
- 18:21What he is saying is that the Word of God, this powerful,
- 18:25powerful book, and I'll never forget when I heard of a friend
- 18:29of mine who was a pastor and his father is a pastor.
- 18:31This man threw the Bible out on the table and asked the young
- 18:35preacher. He said, does that contain the
- 18:37word of God or is that the word of God?
- 18:41And everyone who said that it contains the word of God was not
- 18:45ordained. It was only those who said that
- 18:48this is the word of God that was ordained.
- 18:51And that's exactly what this is. This is the word of God.
- 18:54So when people try to convince you or anyone else in your
- 18:58circle that, well, this is just a book that's written by men,
- 19:01this is just a book that's written by, we don't know if the
- 19:04interpretations are right. We don't know if this is right.
- 19:06If that's right, this is God breathed.
- 19:10It's God breathed. I don't care who he used to to
- 19:13pen the Bible. I don't care who he used to pen.
- 19:16He used the donkey to speak to a prophet.
- 19:19So I don't care who he uses to pen this Bible.
- 19:21This Bible is God breathed. The Bible has been written over
- 19:241600 years by 40 different men, 40 different men, 66 books.
- 19:31And none of these books contradict each other.
- 19:34None of them. And if people try to come up and
- 19:36say, well, wait a minute, this contradicts that.
- 19:38It's not the book that's the problem.
- 19:40It's the understanding of the person that's reading is the
- 19:42problem. Everything in the Word of God
- 19:46can be explained through Scripture.
- 19:48Now, there's some things we don't know.
- 19:51There's some things we don't know about the word of God, and
- 19:53I'm fine with that. We'll know when we see him.
- 19:57But the word of God there is no contradictions.
- 20:00It's written over 3 languages in three different continents.
- 20:04This word is powerful. There's been many of people who
- 20:06have tried to get rid of the Bible over many years.
- 20:09No one has ever been able to do it because this word is living.
- 20:14This is a powerful word of God itself, and it's good for, for,
- 20:19for, for doctrine. That means it's good for
- 20:21teaching. Teaching the true gospel is good
- 20:24for reproof. It's good for pointing out error
- 20:26or being able to refute error. It's good for correction.
- 20:30It's good for fixing the error and being able to get us back on
- 20:33the right path. And it's also good for
- 20:35instruction and righteousness. That means it's good for us to
- 20:38keep it right, to keep our lives in order to help us to do that.
- 20:43It's the Word of God that can do that.
- 20:45I have such a love for the Word of God because it was the word
- 20:49of God that I had to hold on to in so many situations in my
- 20:53life. It was the word of God that
- 20:55helped me. It was the Word of God that
- 20:56comfort me. It was the Word of God that
- 20:58convicts me and will correct me when I'm off.
- 21:02It's the word of God that does it.
- 21:03No one can come to me and give me anything logical that could
- 21:06help me to change, but the Word of God did when I was in my sin.
- 21:11It wasn't my mother, it wasn't my my father, it wasn't my
- 21:15sister who convinced me to turn my life around.
- 21:18It was the Word of God and the power that was with the Word of
- 21:21God when it was preached. And even now, it's the Word of
- 21:26God that keeps me in line and causes me to repent.
- 21:32When the Spirit convicts me of things that I do that are off
- 21:35and I do, there are times that I am off and the word of God is
- 21:40there to help me with those things just like it's there for
- 21:43you. The Word of God, it's powerful.
- 21:47It's powerful and the man of God.
- 21:49Paul talks about the man of God with a man of God.
- 21:52You know, Timothy is the only one that he referred to as the
- 21:55man of God in the New Testament. In the Old Testament, the man of
- 21:57God was always referred to was just the prophets.
- 22:00They called the prophets the man of God.
- 22:02When the prophet came to town, all the man of God is here.
- 22:04It was the prophets, but here twice in the book of first and
- 22:10second Timothy, he refers to Timothy as a man of God.
- 22:13Here in this scripture and also back in first Timothy chapter 6
- 22:18verse 11 refers to as the man of God.
- 22:21And the man of God is a messenger, someone who brings a
- 22:24message of God. And thank God that Paul, man of
- 22:29God, was a good example for Timothy during the time when
- 22:33Timothy needed a good example. Timothy's own father was not a
- 22:38believer. His mother and his grandmother
- 22:40was a believer, but his father wasn't.
- 22:43Paul became his spiritual father, a spiritual father.
- 22:46And that's why it's important for us to be able to have
- 22:50spiritual children in the faith. If we're walking with the Lord
- 22:53as adults, we should have spiritual children in the faith,
- 22:57people that we can pour into. Bible says that from a child
- 23:01Timothy knew the Scriptures because he was given to her from
- 23:04his own mother and his grandmother.
- 23:07It is so important that if you have young children to expose
- 23:11them now to the Scriptures. Expose them now to the
- 23:14Scriptures. Give it to them as often as you
- 23:17can, as much as you can. When they get old, those things
- 23:21don't go anywhere. Regardless of what decisions
- 23:22they make, the Scripture is there.
- 23:25The truth is there, and trust me, they do.
- 23:27They get old and they make their own decisions.
- 23:29And you wonder sometime, did you hear anything that I said to you
- 23:32when you were younger? Did you hear anything?
- 23:36But without a doubt the scriptures are real and they are
- 23:42true and they are good to help one to find salvation, able to
- 23:48make one wise for salvation and can save souls.
- 23:53It's the scriptures that can do that.
- 23:57Thank you for tuning in to Living Waters of Grace with
- 24:00Pastor Lewis Harrell. We're currently in the books of
- 24:03First and Second Timothy. Some of the things included in
- 24:07these New Testament letters from Paul are that the young and
- 24:11newly established Pastor Timothy was being encouraged to hold
- 24:16fast to what was true. He was challenged to confront
- 24:20and address the false teachers that were rising up.
- 24:23He was also reminded to accept his calling to the ministry with
- 24:27gratefulness and to address the happenings going on in the
- 24:31Ephesian church. Paul was imparting his
- 24:35experience and knowledge to the next generation.
- 24:39Timothy was receptive to learning and gleaning what he
- 24:42could from Paul's wisdom. This is how it should be in
- 24:46ministry across multiple generations.
- 24:49Those who have lived a little more life should be open to
- 24:52sharing their successes and also things they've learned along the
- 24:56way. That we're not a win.
- 24:59The younger generations coming up can learn and appreciate much
- 25:03from those ahead of them, and perhaps avoid some of the same
- 25:06pitfalls that their mentors work through mentoring.
- 25:11It's a beautiful relationship when the hearts are in the right
- 25:15place to learn and grow. You trust that you're in a
- 25:18community where this is happening.
- 25:20Older ones providing advice and wisdom, and each side learning
- 25:25and growing from one another. This certainly was the case for
- 25:29Paul and Timothy as they were comrades for the sake of the
- 25:33gospel. For more information on where
