Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / The Imagination: a Tool for Development
Transcript
- 0:00Imagination is a window to the future.
- 0:04People who are stuck in their past or the present tend to
- 0:08close themselves off from development.
- 0:11They insist that things have always been done a certain way
- 0:15and that is how they are going to be done.
- 0:18Change is anathema to them. They have little, if any
- 0:22receptivity to progressive views, to new directions, to
- 0:27development off of their fixed ways of seeing and doing things.
- 0:31They even fight to maintain their status quo rather than
- 0:35face the reality that change is inevitable.
- 0:40Those who take up spiritual development naturally have to be
- 0:44receptive to new influences and insights coming to them.
- 0:48They need to have the imagination that things can be
- 0:51different, truer, more beautiful, more harmonious than
- 0:56what they see around them in the world.
- 0:59Imagination helps them see beyond the limits of the present
- 1:03darkness. A disciple asks what is the
- 1:07function, the use of the imagination?
- 1:11The mother notes quote. If one knows how to use it, one
- 1:16can create for oneself his own inner and outer life.
- 1:21One can build his own existence with his imagination if one
- 1:24knows how to use it and has a power.
- 1:28In fact, it is an elementary way of creating, of forming things
- 1:33in the world. I have always felt that if one
- 1:36didn't have the capacity of imagination, he would not make
- 1:40any progress. Your imagination always goes
- 1:43ahead of your life. When you think of yourself,
- 1:47usually you imagine what you want to be, don't you?
- 1:50And this goes ahead, then you follow, then it continues to go
- 1:55ahead and you follow. Imagination opens for you the
- 1:59path of realization. People who are not imaginative,
- 2:05it is very difficult to make them move.
- 2:08They see just what is there before their nose.
- 2:11They feel just what they are moment by moment, and they
- 2:14cannot go forward because they are clamped by the immediate
- 2:17thing. It depends a good deal on what 1
- 2:21calls imagination. End Quote Reference Sri Orobindo
