- 0:01Speaker 1: They're brothers, but so were canaan Aden.
- 0:04Speaker 2: They were into poorn, they were into drugs, they were
- 0:07Speaker 2: into anything they could get their hands on to make money.
- 0:10Speaker 3: They're just neuveau reeves, dumbasses committing deadly Since is the
- 0:15Speaker 3: Pirano families bread and Butter.
- 0:17Speaker 4: Deep Throat was considered to be the most profitable film
- 0:21Speaker 4: of all time, they.
- 0:23Speaker 5: Stopped counting it. They started weighing the money. That's how
- 0:26Speaker 5: much money.
- 0:27Speaker 1: They were making. When this nuclear family goes ballistic, it's
- 0:30Speaker 1: because they're greed is way thicker than their blood.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I had never heard of a betrayal like that. One
- 0:40Speaker 2: person that has absolutely nothing to do with this.
- 0:42Speaker 1: It's killed.
- 0:43Speaker 6: It's devastating.
- 0:49Speaker 1: My name is Steve Sharripam. I grew up in a
- 0:51Speaker 1: pretty rough neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. I've seen good
- 0:55Speaker 1: people turn bad and bad people turn worse. Some took
- 1:01Speaker 1: contracts to carry out a hit. Some were victims of
- 1:04Speaker 1: a hit to hit man. Life and death is just
- 1:08Speaker 1: part of the business. It's nothing personal. January fourth, nineteen
- 1:24Speaker 1: eighty two, Brooklyn, New York. Joseph Pirano and his son
- 1:31Speaker 1: Joe Jr. Are going to a meeting with their Colombo
- 1:34Speaker 1: crime family bosses. What they don't know is they're heading
- 1:40Speaker 1: into an ambush. What makes it even worse is the
- 1:44Speaker 1: plan to kill them has been hatched by Joe Senior's
- 1:47Speaker 1: business partner, his big brother Tony.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I had never heard of a betrayal like that where
- 1:55Speaker 2: a brother would actually come in and ask that his
- 1:58Speaker 2: brother and his nephew beek to me, it was unbelievable.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So how did the relationship between two brothers turn into carnage?
- 2:15Speaker 1: Every family has its disputes. Fickering over money can lead
- 2:19Speaker 1: to hard feelings, for sure. So what if you and
- 2:22Speaker 1: your brother owned the most profitable porn flick ever made,
- 2:27Speaker 1: Deep Throat. We're talking about tens, maybe hundreds of millions,
- 2:31Speaker 1: And what if you're lying, cheating and then kompoop of
- 2:34Speaker 1: a brother? What if that fat, no good pile of
- 2:37Speaker 1: crap stole tens of millions of that movie's profits from
- 2:41Speaker 1: you and your family? Would you want them dead? Yeah?
- 2:46Speaker 1: I thought so.
- 2:49Speaker 5: I think the family kind of fracture, as families do
- 2:53Speaker 5: when they start making tons and tons and tons of money.
- 3:02Speaker 1: It all started happier days. It's the early seventies. Joe
- 3:09Speaker 1: Parano is a gangster from a gangster family and life
- 3:14Speaker 1: is good. Joe isn't especially smart or ambitious, but his
- 3:18Speaker 1: big brother Tony lets him tag along.
- 3:22Speaker 7: Each of them was a member of the Columbo crime
- 3:24Speaker 7: family and they were involved in the typical gangster activities
- 3:30Speaker 7: loan shalking, gambling, extortion.
- 3:34Speaker 2: They were thumbs and hoodlums, general street people. They didn't
- 3:38Speaker 2: have any finesse. They were into anything they could get
- 3:42Speaker 2: their hands on to make money.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Salvator Big Salama Schiata is on the same mafia crew
- 3:48Speaker 1: as Joe and Tony Parano. He does it much like
- 3:51Speaker 1: either one.
- 3:52Speaker 2: They were bullies, very loud, very boisterous type people in
- 3:58Speaker 2: the Columbo family body like the middle.
- 4:03Speaker 1: They aren't exactly peace from a pod melons would be
- 4:07Speaker 1: more like it. Elder brother Tony is the brains.
- 4:13Speaker 2: He has been a four hundred pound area so that
- 4:16Speaker 2: they nicknamed him Fat Tony.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Pirano biggest Fat Tony might be. If he's the brains,
- 4:22Speaker 1: then Joe's the stomach. They call him the whale, but
- 4:27Speaker 1: not all of his blubber is on his waistline. Plenty
- 4:30Speaker 1: of it is between his ears.
- 4:33Speaker 5: No one had a nice thing to say about Joe
- 4:35Speaker 5: the Whale, although than they was fat and he couldn't
- 4:38Speaker 5: fit in the doorway.
- 4:40Speaker 1: The brothers have a nice little racket making dirty movies
- 4:43Speaker 1: that play the perverts in peep shows. The whole video
- 4:46Speaker 1: revolution is years away. In Hollywood, movies are prudis, so
- 4:50Speaker 1: pororn fans have to take whatever garbage they can get
- 4:54Speaker 1: and make no mistake, what the Piranos make is cracked.
- 4:58Speaker 5: There was basically looke, which are short films. They'd be
- 5:02Speaker 5: really grainy, and they weren't shot really well. You really
- 5:06Speaker 5: couldn't see a lot of what was going on in
- 5:09Speaker 5: the films. They weren't that good.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Still, low budgets and a black market product make the
- 5:16Speaker 1: brothers a steady profit, and they control the whole shebang,
- 5:20Speaker 1: especially in their hometown.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Times Square was really a cessful. It was all pornographic theaters,
- 5:31Speaker 3: peep shows, prostitutes.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Today.
- 5:35Speaker 3: You couldn't buy a loose cigarette in Times Square, and
- 5:39Speaker 3: then you could buy almost anything your heart desired. The
- 5:45Speaker 3: theaters paid at least fifty percent of their income to
- 5:49Speaker 3: the mob, or to the mob through the Perinos.
- 5:54Speaker 1: You would think to the mob, money is money, but
- 5:57Speaker 1: even gangsters have standards, and to them, the Peranos are
- 6:00Speaker 1: just as skanky as their wares.
- 6:04Speaker 3: Pornography was thought to be the lowest wrong of organized crime.
- 6:09Speaker 2: When I was inducted into the family, the Columbo family,
- 6:13Speaker 2: I was explicitly told that there was nothing to be
- 6:19Speaker 2: done in the pornography business. We were not to be
- 6:22Speaker 2: involved in. It was one of the rules and regulations
- 6:26Speaker 2: that needed to be followed.
- 6:27Speaker 5: Remember, these guys are very heavily Catholic and they have wives,
- 6:31Speaker 5: and the wives are always saying, why are you making
- 6:33Speaker 5: those dirty movies?
- 6:34Speaker 2: You know, those things would be disgusting, They would be
- 6:40Speaker 2: dishonorable to be involved in anything like that. The mafia
- 6:43Speaker 2: that I joined would have had nothing to do with
- 6:47Speaker 2: that kind of industry.
- 6:50Speaker 1: The fact that their crew looks down on porn makes
- 6:53Speaker 1: it easy for Tony and Joe to keep it all
- 6:55Speaker 1: in the family. They both have sons, and in both cases,
- 7:01Speaker 1: the apple does not fall far from the tree. Tony
- 7:06Speaker 1: so Butchi is like his father. He's smart and has
- 7:10Speaker 1: a good head for business.
- 7:12Speaker 7: Butchi had a reputation as being a charming, rogueish kind
- 7:16Speaker 7: of a character.
- 7:18Speaker 5: It was one of these guys that really knew how
- 7:20Speaker 5: to hang out in New York and you know, have fun.
- 7:23Speaker 5: You know, he was a fun guy and everyone liked him.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Butchy dreams of turning his family's porn racket into a
- 7:30Speaker 1: Hollywood hit factory with him at the helm.
- 7:34Speaker 5: He wanted to be an auteur, you know, he really
- 7:36Speaker 5: wanted to be this filmmaker and make big Hollywood features,
- 7:40Speaker 5: you know, not just you know, pornography.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Joe Dewell's son, Joe Junr. Is nothing like his cousin.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Butchie Junior is a bonehead who co saw his connections
- 7:52Speaker 1: just like his old man.
- 7:54Speaker 2: It would be difficult for you to have a real
- 7:56Speaker 2: conversation with them. They didn't know anything about the movie
- 8:00Speaker 2: street or anything like that.
- 8:02Speaker 1: The fortunes of the Perino brothers changed one day went
- 8:05Speaker 1: into their office strolls a guy with an idea that
- 8:07Speaker 1: will revolutionize the smut industry. Gerard Domiano is a New
- 8:13Speaker 1: York hairdresser who wants to be a movie director, and
- 8:17Speaker 1: his earthshaking idea is to make a dirty feature film,
- 8:20Speaker 1: you know, a story people talking, pretending to be other people,
- 8:25Speaker 1: the whole bit.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Back in those days, you know, that was really unheard of.
- 8:30Speaker 4: You know, X rated films were shot in a hotel
- 8:34Speaker 4: room with a couple of hookers. You know, that was
- 8:36Speaker 4: a film.
- 8:40Speaker 1: Domiano even has a star in mind. He's written a
- 8:43Speaker 1: porno comedy for a woman who has a very special talent.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Her name is Linda Lovelace. It's no accident he calls
- 8:51Speaker 1: his movie deep Throat.
- 8:54Speaker 4: He was inspired by Linda Lovelace. There's no question. I
- 8:58Speaker 4: think really what my father about Linda was her innocence
- 9:05Speaker 4: that it was almost a contradiction. Here was someone with this,
- 9:09Speaker 4: you know, amazing sexual technique, but that had the appeal
- 9:14Speaker 4: of the girl next door.
- 9:18Speaker 1: At first. The girl next door appeal is lost on
- 9:21Speaker 1: the Peranhos.
- 9:23Speaker 5: They had a big, big fight with the Peranos because
- 9:26Speaker 5: they didn't think Linda was attractive and Gerard Domiano with
- 9:31Speaker 5: screen back. But deep Throat's going to become a household word.
- 9:35Speaker 6: You know.
- 9:35Speaker 4: They didn't quite get it. They didn't understand what he
- 9:38Speaker 4: was trying to do. For example, they didn't like the title.
- 9:43Speaker 4: They wanted to call it The sword Swallower, and he
- 9:46Speaker 4: had to convince them, no, no, trust me, you know
- 9:48Speaker 4: deep Throat.
- 9:50Speaker 1: They're also nervous that Deep Throat's budget is about twenty
- 9:53Speaker 1: two thousand dollars. That's fifteen times the cost of a
- 9:57Speaker 1: porn loop.
- 9:59Speaker 5: So two thousand dollars to make this movie with this
- 10:03Speaker 5: not very attractive girl, but they really didn't know what
- 10:07Speaker 5: they were doing.
- 10:10Speaker 1: The Perrinos are not impressed with Linda, and Domiano insists
- 10:13Speaker 1: they at least bring her in for an audition. Well,
- 10:21Speaker 1: when they experience her special talent firsthand, let's just say
- 10:28Speaker 1: they have a change of heart.
- 10:32Speaker 5: Linda Lovelace's special talent and this is hard to say
- 10:35Speaker 5: on a PG rated show, but she could perform fullatio.
- 10:40Speaker 5: I don't mean to be crude, but that was her
- 10:43Speaker 5: selling point.
- 10:45Speaker 8: Deep Throat was kind of a sex technique people hadn't
- 10:48Speaker 8: heard of or seen. There was no word deep throat
- 10:51Speaker 8: into the movie, and people wanted to see that.
- 10:58Speaker 1: After Linda's tripped to the care I just think couch,
- 11:00Speaker 1: the Piranhos agreed to Bankwete Ammiano's Deep Throat.
- 11:04Speaker 4: My father was responsible for all creative aspects of the film.
- 11:08Speaker 4: The Piranos were responsible for distribution and of course the funding,
- 11:15Speaker 4: and they were going to split the profits three ways.
- 11:21Speaker 4: He went home and wrote the script over the weekend,
- 11:23Speaker 4: and by Monday he went back and showed this to
- 11:26Speaker 4: the Paranhos and said this is the film I want
- 11:29Speaker 4: to make.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Miami went to nineteen seventy two. Damiano takes just six
- 11:40Speaker 1: days to shoot his movie.
- 11:42Speaker 4: My father, he did everything in that movie except get laid.
- 11:48Speaker 4: He came up with the idea, wrote the script, he
- 11:50Speaker 4: did the editing. He was involved in every aspect of
- 11:54Speaker 4: that of that film from beginning to end. At the time,
- 11:58Speaker 4: I was seven years old on the set, and the
- 12:01Speaker 4: atmosphere was very exciting.
- 12:07Speaker 2: You know.
- 12:08Speaker 4: My father never allowed us to be anywhere near what
- 12:11Speaker 4: they called the nitty gritty when they were filming the
- 12:13Speaker 4: sex scenes. We were ushered, you know, off the set.
- 12:16Speaker 4: But you know, we were very aware that our father
- 12:20Speaker 4: was a filmmaker and we were proud of that, you know,
- 12:24Speaker 4: and we were were raised to believe that there wasn't
- 12:27Speaker 4: anything wrong with it with sexuality.
- 12:31Speaker 1: The big question is will it make money?
- 12:34Speaker 7: Oh boy?
- 12:35Speaker 1: Will it? Deep Throat goes on to become the most
- 12:38Speaker 1: profitable porn film ever made. Tony and Joe Parino and
- 12:43Speaker 1: their sons Butcher and Joe Junr are poison to become
- 12:46Speaker 1: mega millionaires. Their family fortune is built on a foundation
- 12:50Speaker 1: of lies, exploitation, and threats of violence. What could possibly
- 12:55Speaker 1: go wrong. January nineteen eighty two, the new year is
- 13:07Speaker 1: just four days old. At Mobster Slash Porn Distributors, Joseph
- 13:13Speaker 1: the Wyld Pirano and his son are on their way
- 13:16Speaker 1: to a meeting. What the two joes don't know is
- 13:20Speaker 1: to sit down is a setup. Who they'll be meeting
- 13:24Speaker 1: is their maker. Ten years earlier, it seemed like the
- 13:31Speaker 1: fund would never end for the Pirano brothers. Their film
- 13:36Speaker 1: Deep Throat opens in seventy two, and it hits at
- 13:39Speaker 1: just the moment and Missus America are thinking they need
- 13:42Speaker 1: to explore their wild side.
- 13:45Speaker 8: It was just a perfect movie at the perfect time.
- 13:49Speaker 5: People have been talking about having sex in the sixties,
- 13:52Speaker 5: but nobody really had it until the seventies.
- 13:55Speaker 8: People were ready for eighth Porn Revolution.
- 14:01Speaker 1: And Tucson future porn legend Annie Sprinkle is working the
- 14:05Speaker 1: popcorn counter at the local movie house.
- 14:08Speaker 8: Deep Throat was the first porn movie I had ever seen,
- 14:12Speaker 8: and first porn movie a lot of people had seen.
- 14:18Speaker 8: And I remember just being totally odd, shocked, amazed seeing
- 14:26Speaker 8: you know, Genital's big on screen. It was a religious experience.
- 14:32Speaker 5: The reason why Deep Throat made it was because there
- 14:34Speaker 5: was a comedy.
- 14:41Speaker 6: Well there it is, you little bugger very.
- 14:44Speaker 8: It was a lot of fun, so people came from
- 14:48Speaker 8: all walks of life.
- 14:52Speaker 5: Linda Lovelace was on the cover of Esquire. Johnny Carson
- 14:56Speaker 5: started making jokes once Johnny Carson concludes it in his monologue,
- 15:01Speaker 5: you know You're sad.
- 15:03Speaker 8: Deep Throat was happening. It was deep film to see
- 15:07Speaker 8: and everyone was going to see it. And I remember
- 15:11Speaker 8: working in that ticket booth and just the cash coming through.
- 15:14Speaker 8: It was unbelievable. I couldn't sell tickets fats enough.
- 15:20Speaker 1: The success of Deep Throat means the Piranho Brothers go
- 15:23Speaker 1: from bottom feeding pariahs to filthy rich, big time earners
- 15:27Speaker 1: for the Columbo crime family.
- 15:30Speaker 7: The Peranhos revolutionized the porn business and brought the Mob
- 15:33Speaker 7: into it in a big way.
- 15:36Speaker 2: The Mob is like a chameleon. They're always changing. They
- 15:40Speaker 2: always want to supply whatever it is to the people,
- 15:45Speaker 2: whatever they want, and as society changed, they changed right
- 15:50Speaker 2: along with it.
- 15:52Speaker 7: Publicly, the mafia has always been against pornography, but they're
- 15:58Speaker 7: in the life to make money.
- 16:00Speaker 2: When porn became big, the Mob was standing right there,
- 16:03Speaker 2: ready to give them whatever they wanted.
- 16:06Speaker 5: It was just making so much money, and the rest
- 16:09Speaker 5: of the mafia realizes that it's like it's a product,
- 16:14Speaker 5: like drugs were to the mafia in the fifties, that
- 16:17Speaker 5: they could make hundreds of millions of dollars. It's like heroin.
- 16:21Speaker 5: So basically everyone started making porn films.
- 16:26Speaker 6: You know, anybody that believed in the old folklore and
- 16:29Speaker 6: all the old.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Stuff about honor and integrity that was all gone by
- 16:33Speaker 2: the wayside. It's like a whirlwind, like the tornado was
- 16:37Speaker 2: taken over. The mob was absolutely out of the honor
- 16:41Speaker 2: business and it was strictly a money making enterprise now.
- 16:46Speaker 1: But she produced the film. But it's Tony and Joel's
- 16:49Speaker 1: distribution network that makes Deep Throat such a winner. Their
- 16:53Speaker 1: approach is classic mafia, simple and blunt.
- 16:57Speaker 4: They didn't just send the film out and go buy
- 17:00Speaker 4: box office receipts. They had their own people there to
- 17:03Speaker 4: make sure they got every dollar.
- 17:07Speaker 5: A guy would fly the prints in, give it to
- 17:09Speaker 5: the theater our owners and say we want fifty percent
- 17:12Speaker 5: of this.
- 17:12Speaker 1: At the end of the week, they want to make.
- 17:14Speaker 8: Sure their numbers were accurate. So I think people got
- 17:18Speaker 8: a few bucks an hour to sit there at the
- 17:20Speaker 8: door counting how many people went in, so they had
- 17:24Speaker 8: a very tight control on the distribution.
- 17:28Speaker 1: This method is so effective. The Pirano's office is soon
- 17:32Speaker 1: swamped with cash.
- 17:33Speaker 5: They stopped counting it. They started weighing the money. That's
- 17:37Speaker 5: how much money they were making.
- 17:38Speaker 2: There was money from the floor to the ceiling, and
- 17:41Speaker 2: they didn't want to leave because they were afraid the
- 17:42Speaker 2: place would get broken into.
- 17:44Speaker 1: If there is a break in, it'll probably be their
- 17:47Speaker 1: friends with Crowboss. I mean, there's no loyalty in this crowd,
- 17:51Speaker 1: not when it comes to piles of cash. Director Jerry
- 17:57Speaker 1: Domiano finds that out pretty quickly. The Piranos decide to
- 18:01Speaker 1: cut him out of his share of the film's profits.
- 18:04Speaker 4: And my father began to understand who he was dealing with.
- 18:09Speaker 4: So when they made him the quote unquote offer, he
- 18:13Speaker 4: couldn't refuse. He felt that he was lucky to get
- 18:17Speaker 4: out of there with his life.
- 18:18Speaker 1: They pay him twenty five thousand dollars to go away
- 18:22Speaker 1: for good. They say money changes people, but that's not true.
- 18:27Speaker 1: What it does is give people the means to show
- 18:29Speaker 1: you who they've been all along. So who are the
- 18:33Speaker 1: Perennos really? Fat TONI is a businessman. He invests in
- 18:37Speaker 1: real estate, and government companies. He runs them all just
- 18:40Speaker 1: like an old school mobster. Of course, that's exactly who
- 18:44Speaker 1: he is.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Fat TONI and Butchy they weren't one trick ponies. They
- 18:51Speaker 2: used the money that they got from Deep Throat to
- 18:55Speaker 2: branch out.
- 18:56Speaker 5: Butcher Perino wanted to be a filmmaker more than he
- 19:00Speaker 5: wanted to be a mafioso guy. So he went to
- 19:02Speaker 5: Hollywood and he set up this film distribution company called
- 19:13Speaker 5: Branston Films.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Butchy's good at it too.
- 19:17Speaker 5: They had about twenty hits in the first year of
- 19:19Speaker 5: their business.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Butcher's company distributes the Texas Chainsaw, Massacre, Bruce Lee's Return
- 19:25Speaker 1: of the Dragon, and Andy Warholds Frankenstein.
- 19:29Speaker 5: Basically, they had their fingers on the pulse of pop
- 19:31Speaker 5: culture and really took some chances and made quite a
- 19:34Speaker 5: bit of money on their own.
- 19:36Speaker 2: It was really his niche He would have gone on
- 19:39Speaker 2: to make movies forever.
- 19:41Speaker 1: You know.
- 19:41Speaker 2: He was just the type of guy that that was
- 19:43Speaker 2: his thing.
- 19:44Speaker 6: He loved it.
- 19:48Speaker 1: And as for Joe the Whale and his son Joe Jr.
- 19:51Speaker 1: They have no dreams, just appetites. Who are they really? Jerks? Greedy,
- 19:59Speaker 1: low class jerks. It's who they've always been, and getting
- 20:02Speaker 1: rich just makes that crystal clear. I think they were
- 20:07Speaker 1: kind of like.
- 20:07Speaker 5: A white trash family who suddenly hits the lottery.
- 20:10Speaker 1: You know, you buy everything.
- 20:12Speaker 3: They paraded their wealth, which was not considered a good quality.
- 20:17Speaker 1: Here, this is for you, and this is for them.
- 20:21Speaker 3: They're just nouveaux ree dumbasses, and so they weren't well
- 20:26Speaker 3: thought of.
- 20:29Speaker 1: So just when the Pirano brothers and their sons are
- 20:32Speaker 1: showing that true colors comes to time when they need
- 20:35Speaker 1: to have each other's backs. Deep Throat might be a
- 20:41Speaker 1: national sensation, but lots of people think graphic on screen
- 20:45Speaker 1: sex is obscene.
- 20:47Speaker 6: Oh, we're going to.
- 20:48Speaker 2: Ask you to sartwarn on the premises for an obscene movie.
- 20:53Speaker 1: And playing it on Main Street, USA causes a few
- 20:56Speaker 1: run ins with the law.
- 20:58Speaker 7: The peranhos and the entire porn industry began to feel
- 21:02Speaker 7: the wrath of prosecutors in the Bible Belt who went
- 21:07Speaker 7: afster them using obscenity laws.
- 21:12Speaker 1: In nineteen seventy six, things heat up on a Tennessee
- 21:15Speaker 1: prosecutor gets the bright idea of charging everybody who made
- 21:19Speaker 1: Deep Throat but conspiracy to violate obscenity laws. Tony and
- 21:23Speaker 1: Joe Parreno included, it's a big First Amendment case and
- 21:28Speaker 1: the trial becomes a media circus.
- 21:33Speaker 7: It was supposed to be an obscenity trial, but in
- 21:36Speaker 7: reality it was kind of a racketeering trial where they
- 21:39Speaker 7: tried to show the mob's involvement in the porn industry.
- 21:44Speaker 5: Law enforcement in this country was very, very upset that
- 21:47Speaker 5: the mafia was making one hundreds of millions of dollars
- 21:51Speaker 5: off what they thought was, you know, disgusting, degrading filth.
- 21:56Speaker 7: The trial showed that the Prenos were the prime movers
- 22:01Speaker 7: in the porn business that they had produced and distributed
- 22:07Speaker 7: Deep Throat, made millions of dollars on it, and were
- 22:11Speaker 7: knee deep in cash.
- 22:13Speaker 1: And when the link between the mob and porn profits
- 22:16Speaker 1: is made clear, it's an all out scandal.
- 22:19Speaker 5: Mayor Lindsay and New York City came and banned it.
- 22:24Speaker 5: They pulled it out of the World Theater in Times
- 22:27Speaker 5: Square and it caused an uproar.
- 22:30Speaker 1: When you face hard times together, you really get to
- 22:33Speaker 1: know what somebody's made of. Shared adversity is the glue
- 22:37Speaker 1: that bonds soldiers and fraternity brothers into lifelong friends. That
- 22:42Speaker 1: didn't happen with the wheel Brothers Perno, Tony goes on
- 22:45Speaker 1: the lamb, leaving brother Joe to face the music in
- 22:48Speaker 1: Memphis the Blues.
- 22:52Speaker 5: Of course, the brothers are no longer on the same
- 22:56Speaker 5: page because Anthony Perno Senior had taken off while the
- 23:01Speaker 5: deep throat trial was going on, and Joe the Whale
- 23:05Speaker 5: took over a lot of the distribution.
- 23:19Speaker 1: The trial goes badly for the Piranhos and everybody else.
- 23:23Speaker 1: They all get convicted, even Tony, who's hiding out in
- 23:26Speaker 1: Italy or on his yacht. The Peranos appeal the conviction.
- 23:31Speaker 1: But here's where the dramatic personality difference between the brothers
- 23:36Speaker 1: becomes a problem.
- 23:37Speaker 7: Joe the Whale and his son became the day to
- 23:41Speaker 7: day people who were involved in picking up the money,
- 23:45Speaker 7: collecting the money, distributing the films, and basically running the
- 23:50Speaker 7: show for the Columbo crime family.
- 23:54Speaker 1: It seems obvious that the last person you want minding
- 23:57Speaker 1: the candy store is a five hundred, and it's Mora.
- 24:01Speaker 1: But Fat Tony and Butcher have no choice. They aren't there,
- 24:05Speaker 1: and anyway, the job is pretty simple. It's the two
- 24:08Speaker 1: Joseph's job to make sure everybody gets their cut. Tony
- 24:12Speaker 1: Butcher and the Colombo family bosses. I think we're pretty
- 24:16Speaker 1: well established that the Whale and his son are greeting
- 24:19Speaker 1: income poops, and even their fellow monsters are onto them.
- 24:22Speaker 1: There's gonna be blood on the floor. And with this
- 24:24Speaker 1: punch that ain't a metaphor, Joe Parano and his son
- 24:33Speaker 1: Joe Junr. Think their bosses are coming to meet them
- 24:36Speaker 1: to hear how much money they all made on Deep
- 24:38Speaker 1: Throat last year. In fact, the only ones joining them
- 24:45Speaker 1: will be a pair of shotgun toty hit men. How
- 24:49Speaker 1: is it that two of the Colombo family's best earners
- 24:52Speaker 1: are being set up for a violent end. After the
- 25:01Speaker 1: Memphis trial in seventy six, Joe the Whale and his
- 25:04Speaker 1: son are left in charge of the Pirano family business.
- 25:07Speaker 1: They've never been given any responsibility before for good reason.
- 25:11Speaker 1: They're greedy and not that smart. But now the smart
- 25:17Speaker 1: guys are indisposed. Fat Tony's on the run and Butcher's
- 25:21Speaker 1: fighting a losing battle to keep his Hollywood dreams alive.
- 25:26Speaker 5: Unfortunately, it's exposed that Bryanston Films are the mafia, and
- 25:34Speaker 5: basically they close up shop. So Butcher's dream of having
- 25:40Speaker 5: this big Hollywood film studio gets shut down.
- 25:48Speaker 1: So Tony and Butcher are counting more than ever on
- 25:52Speaker 1: their share of Deep Throats profits. But those envelopes don't
- 25:55Speaker 1: seem as thick as they ought to be, especially considering
- 26:01Speaker 1: that the Memphis trial did nothing but pump up Deep
- 26:04Speaker 1: Throats box office receipts.
- 26:06Speaker 3: The controversial movie Deep Throat has returned to Fort Worth
- 26:10Speaker 3: once again.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Most of the convictions are overturned on appeal, and thanks
- 26:15Speaker 1: to the attempts to ban it, Deep Vote is bigger
- 26:18Speaker 1: than ever.
- 26:20Speaker 2: It actually generated more money because they gave them publicity
- 26:24Speaker 2: they couldn't get anywhere else.
- 26:26Speaker 8: People were starting to talk about freedom of speech and
- 26:29Speaker 8: First Amendment of rights and fighting for sexual freedom. So
- 26:35Speaker 8: people wanted to be part of the sexual revolution. And
- 26:38Speaker 8: because the police had tried to stop the distribution of
- 26:41Speaker 8: the film, people wanted to see it. You know, when
- 26:46Speaker 8: things get censored, people want to see what's the big.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Deal, which means the joes are getting even more stinking
- 26:55Speaker 1: rich fat Tony and Butchy are on the outside and
- 27:02Speaker 1: they smell a rat. Just because you're in a room
- 27:06Speaker 1: with a giant pile of money, it doesn't mean it's
- 27:09Speaker 1: all yours. The whale and the sun start thinking the
- 27:11Speaker 1: bosses have no idea how much they're supposed to get.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Why not send them two boxes instead of say three
- 27:17Speaker 1: or four. Oops.
- 27:24Speaker 5: You know, once you're getting the money, you think, God,
- 27:25Speaker 5: it's mine. You know he's not coming back. I can
- 27:28Speaker 5: just spend it anyway I want. I mean, you know,
- 27:31Speaker 5: if I was Anthony Pereno, I probably would have sent
- 27:34Speaker 5: guys to shoot him down too. I mean, he was
- 27:37Speaker 5: pissing the money away.
- 27:38Speaker 1: You know. After a couple of years on the lamb,
- 27:41Speaker 1: fat Tony comes out of the cold. He's got to
- 27:46Speaker 1: serve a little time, but he's okay with that. What
- 27:49Speaker 1: he's not okay with is his brother playing him for
- 27:52Speaker 1: a fool.
- 27:53Speaker 5: When his brother came back, he wasn't too happy with
- 27:56Speaker 5: the way Joe the Whale had been spending his money.
- 28:01Speaker 7: Anthony Pirano felt that his brother and his nephew were
- 28:06Speaker 7: stealing not only from the crime family, but stealing from him.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Fat Tony's prison is in California, not far from Butcher.
- 28:18Speaker 1: It should be no surprise that the topic of what
- 28:21Speaker 1: to do about our thieving relatives comes up now and again.
- 28:35Speaker 3: He sent his son to the Columbo family hierarchy to
- 28:38Speaker 3: complain that his brother was stealing money from him.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Yeah, he Joe, thank you, he said. My father wants
- 28:48Speaker 2: you guys to know what's going on. He wants my
- 28:53Speaker 2: uncle Joe and my cousin Joey to pay for this
- 28:57Speaker 2: with their lives.
- 28:58Speaker 1: The Columbo bosses are no stri to whacking their own.
- 29:04Speaker 1: For them, putting bullets in the brains of friends and
- 29:06Speaker 1: colleagues is all in a day's work.
- 29:09Speaker 7: The Columbo crime family has always been a fractious, violent
- 29:14Speaker 7: family that feasted on violence against itself.
- 29:19Speaker 2: As bad of an image as I had of the Peranos,
- 29:22Speaker 2: and as much as I disliked them all, I still
- 29:26Speaker 2: didn't think that they were capable of doing anything like that.
- 29:28Speaker 6: I don't think that a human being could ever act
- 29:35Speaker 6: that way.
- 29:35Speaker 2: To go in and to put his brother and his
- 29:37Speaker 2: nephew on the line and asked for their lives for
- 29:42Speaker 2: stealing money was unbelievable to me.
- 29:47Speaker 1: The Pirano hits a weird one, for sure. For fratricide
- 29:50Speaker 1: or no, it seems like a good management plan.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Interest in the hit was money. They didn't care if
- 30:04Speaker 3: you steal him from the brother. If you're steal him
- 30:06Speaker 3: from the brother. You can steal him from us.
- 30:09Speaker 5: You don't go into the mafia and not know that
- 30:11Speaker 5: if you do that, you're gonna get whacked. You know,
- 30:15Speaker 5: that's just you know, it's like ripping off a drug dealer.
- 30:18Speaker 5: You know, like someone's gonna you're you're gonna pay for.
- 30:20Speaker 1: The decision is made. Joe the Whale and his son
- 30:29Speaker 1: are to be killed. The hit needs to be planned,
- 30:32Speaker 1: of course, but how hard can it be to whack
- 30:35Speaker 1: the whale? Clearly the Columbo family reading group has not
- 30:39Speaker 1: gotten around to moby dick Captain Ahead. He had a
- 30:43Speaker 1: hard time of him. November nineteen eighty one, Joseph the
- 30:58Speaker 1: Whale Pirano is ambushed in his easy chair and riddled
- 31:04Speaker 1: with five thirty eight caliber bullets. It looks like the
- 31:10Speaker 1: Columbo family's problem has taken care of, but they're is
- 31:14Speaker 1: surprises everybody else. They didn't order this hit. The question
- 31:19Speaker 1: is who did.
- 31:23Speaker 3: So?
- 31:24Speaker 1: Who shot the whale? Well, it wasn't the Columbos. It
- 31:28Speaker 1: was Joe Junior. He's pissed off because his dad is
- 31:32Speaker 1: sleeping with Junior's wife's mother. You can't make this stuff up.
- 31:39Speaker 2: When Joe Junior found out about it. He felt dishonored
- 31:42Speaker 2: by the father, and he tried to kill him.
- 31:46Speaker 1: It turns out the whale's biggest talent is absorbing lead. Now,
- 31:54Speaker 1: how did the whale survive five point blank slungs from
- 31:57Speaker 1: a thirty eight as the reason ahem didn't go after
- 32:00Speaker 1: Moby Dick with a handgun. There are a lot of
- 32:03Speaker 1: places for a bullet to go on a wall of blubble.
- 32:06Speaker 1: Junior slugs didn't hit anything vital or even in point.
- 32:12Speaker 3: The whale was wearing a permanent bulletproof vest, which was
- 32:17Speaker 3: the two or three hundred pounds of fat that he
- 32:19Speaker 3: carried on his belly.
- 32:20Speaker 6: When the Sun shot him.
- 32:23Speaker 2: The sun ran away and the rest of the family
- 32:26Speaker 2: and the people in the house decided that they would
- 32:28Speaker 2: take Joe to whale and carry him outside, help him
- 32:31Speaker 2: walk down the steps outside, and lay him down in
- 32:34Speaker 2: the street and say that somebody trying to rob him,
- 32:39Speaker 2: so that the cops wouldn't know that the Sun tried
- 32:42Speaker 2: to kill him.
- 32:44Speaker 1: When the police show up to ask who shot.
- 32:45Speaker 6: Him, and.
- 32:49Speaker 1: The whale gives him a cock and bull story, something
- 32:53Speaker 1: about you know, getting mum.
- 32:56Speaker 2: They thinking that it was a mob hit or something
- 32:59Speaker 2: to do with the coln crime family and Joe the
- 33:02Speaker 2: Whale and his family sticking to the story that a
- 33:05Speaker 2: couple of guys edward guns try to rob him.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Lion at the cops's protocol for any mafiosi, but Lion
- 33:14Speaker 1: to your bosses that you don't do.
- 33:18Speaker 3: A few days later, remembers the Columbo family went to
- 33:22Speaker 3: visit the Whale in the hospital and asked him what
- 33:26Speaker 3: had happened, and he told the story again that he'd
- 33:33Speaker 3: been robbed by a black man and the black man
- 33:35Speaker 3: had run.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Off, But the story had already traveled to it and
- 33:41Speaker 2: got into the administration.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Lion to my bosses is a very bad move. When
- 33:50Speaker 1: the Whale tries to cover up his sleazy rolls in
- 33:52Speaker 1: the hay with his son's mother in law, the Columbos
- 33:55Speaker 1: conclude that he's a lion dirtbag dead dirtbags too, of course,
- 33:59Speaker 1: but they hate liars and the mother in law thing. Yes,
- 34:06Speaker 1: Joe the Whale's skivi sex life is actually a big
- 34:09Speaker 1: worry for the Colombo bosses. They might be homicidal thugs
- 34:13Speaker 1: who scoff for g man, but the mob is an
- 34:16Speaker 1: awful lot. Like Junior High School and every Colombo's nightmare
- 34:20Speaker 1: is a giggling Gambino.
- 34:22Speaker 2: There was an ego amongst all the families. They wanted
- 34:25Speaker 2: the other families to have respect for them, you know,
- 34:29Speaker 2: and if they put up with some kind of behavior
- 34:31Speaker 2: and nonsense like that, the other families that would look
- 34:33Speaker 2: down upon them, or they'd.
- 34:35Speaker 6: Left behind their back. They were very paranoid about being
- 34:38Speaker 6: left at.
- 34:40Speaker 1: So for reasons of pride and greed, the Colombo's now
- 34:44Speaker 1: really wanted too. Joseph Piranos stuffed into oversized coffins.
- 34:50Speaker 6: They were multi offenders. Was all over the place.
- 34:53Speaker 2: That the son tried to kill the father, the father
- 34:55Speaker 2: was messing around with his mother in law. Was an
- 34:58Speaker 2: embarrassment for the Columbo family. And then you top it
- 35:02Speaker 2: all off with Joe and his son are stealing money
- 35:05Speaker 2: and some of that money belongs to the boss that
- 35:09Speaker 2: pretty much stealed their fate. When the boss is going
- 35:11Speaker 2: to wind up with more money, you're in a lot
- 35:13Speaker 2: of trouble.
- 35:15Speaker 1: The job calls for someone who knows them really well,
- 35:22Speaker 1: who better than their crewmate, Big sal Mischioda.
- 35:29Speaker 2: I got called to a meeting on Avenue U and
- 35:32Speaker 2: each Ford Street. There was a social club there and
- 35:36Speaker 2: I remember, Oh jeez, you know what the heck is
- 35:39Speaker 2: this all about? You know, anytime I get called come
- 35:43Speaker 2: to the club. We got to talk to you. Something
- 35:46Speaker 2: has to be done, and I'm going to be a
- 35:49Speaker 2: want to do it.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Big South meets with his boss, Joe Thomas Sella.
- 35:55Speaker 2: You know, the first thing out of Joe T's mouth
- 35:58Speaker 2: was Joe Pirano in his son.
- 36:02Speaker 1: And that's all man.
- 36:03Speaker 6: Why well, it's a long story, but they gotta go.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Sal doesn't actually kill for a living. He's a loan shop.
- 36:14Speaker 1: But part of the deal of being in the mob
- 36:16Speaker 1: is that when the boss tells you to do a
- 36:18Speaker 1: messy job, you do it.
- 36:21Speaker 7: Sal had a reputation as the kind of guy if
- 36:23Speaker 7: you give him a job to kill somebody, he would.
- 36:25Speaker 6: Get it done.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Just of course you could get it done, doesn't mean
- 36:30Speaker 1: you like it.
- 36:35Speaker 2: It was just a terrible thing. I mean, taking a
- 36:37Speaker 2: life is not an easy thing to do. I'm sick
- 36:41Speaker 2: that I have to be involved in it. Naturally, by now,
- 36:47Speaker 2: I already know that I have to do whatever I'm told.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Lu ill wind up getting killed myself. It's not an
- 36:55Speaker 2: easy time. It's a very stressful situation.
- 37:07Speaker 1: A little anxiety makes for a good hit man, you
- 37:11Speaker 1: fuss over the details. Planning the mob hit is not
- 37:18Speaker 1: as easy as you might think. Joe the Whale had
- 37:21Speaker 1: already survived five slugs from his son's thirty eight. Clearly,
- 37:25Speaker 1: they'll need serious firepower.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Big guys like that. You want to put them down.
- 37:33Speaker 2: You know, you're looking for shots to knock them down,
- 37:36Speaker 2: knock them off their feet, and then once they're down
- 37:38Speaker 2: you can do whatever you want with them. A shotgun
- 37:41Speaker 2: with the double old buck in it, wow, untold damage.
- 37:47Speaker 2: It hits you and takes your insides right out of here.
- 37:50Speaker 2: So that was the gun of choice.
- 37:54Speaker 1: As any host knows, it's important that your guests feel comfortable.
- 37:57Speaker 1: That's doubly true if you're planning to in viscerate them
- 38:01Speaker 1: with shotguts.
- 38:03Speaker 2: We had to think along the lines of bringing them
- 38:06Speaker 2: some place where they would be comfortable. So we figured
- 38:11Speaker 2: that we would direct them to a place where they
- 38:14Speaker 2: were going to meet with the administration and everything was
- 38:17Speaker 2: going to be okay.
- 38:20Speaker 1: The rules is a year end meeting to report on
- 38:23Speaker 1: Deep Troll's royalties. Finding just the right location is the
- 38:27Speaker 1: key thing, so Sal goes house something.
- 38:36Speaker 2: We decided to just pick a place at random, and
- 38:39Speaker 2: we looked for a spot that would appeal to all
- 38:41Speaker 2: of us. We had to do it in a place
- 38:45Speaker 2: and in a time where it would make them feel
- 38:48Speaker 2: comfortable and they wouldn't worry about what we were going to
- 38:50Speaker 2: do to them, you know, I mean you got to
- 38:53Speaker 2: remember if anything tips them off, it's a big problem.
- 38:58Speaker 6: They're not regular people.
- 38:59Speaker 2: I mean too, you know, they could just as easily
- 39:02Speaker 2: kill us as we could kill them. We picked the
- 39:05Speaker 2: spot that would look like it was made for this.
- 39:09Speaker 2: We clocked the whole neighborhood. There was never anybody out.
- 39:14Speaker 1: He finds his dream house on Lake Street in Gravesend, Brooklyn.
- 39:20Speaker 2: It's a block away from a train station and is
- 39:24Speaker 2: very noisy with the trains.
- 39:26Speaker 1: He doesn't need to look inside. It's the porch he's after.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Once they were on the steps, they were belonged to us.
- 39:34Speaker 2: I mean, there was nothing nowhere they could go. They
- 39:37Speaker 2: needed how to go up or come down, and they
- 39:39Speaker 2: were pretty much trapped.
- 39:42Speaker 1: Sal doesn't ask the owner's permission. Why would he? I'd
- 39:46Speaker 1: like to pop a pornographer on your porch. Can lead
- 39:49Speaker 1: to some awkward questions, for example, are you going to
- 39:53Speaker 1: clean it up after? In fact, lugging a dead whale
- 39:56Speaker 1: back to the car is not in the plan.
- 40:01Speaker 2: They can't kill them in a house and try to
- 40:02Speaker 2: bury them. I mean, look at the size of them.
- 40:06Speaker 2: One guy is five hundred pounds and the other guys
- 40:10Speaker 2: you know another big guys six worth three, six foot four.
- 40:14Speaker 6: Now we'll have to do it. We'll have to leave
- 40:15Speaker 6: them in a street.
- 40:17Speaker 1: January fourth, nineteen eighty two, a car comes to the
- 40:21Speaker 1: del Rio Dina and picks up Joe the Whale and
- 40:24Speaker 1: Joe Junior. Father and son are still at odds over
- 40:28Speaker 1: the mother in law attempted murder thing. But business is business.
- 40:33Speaker 1: They think they're in for another dull evening of hiding
- 40:36Speaker 1: income from their bosses. There will be a reckoning tonight,
- 40:45Speaker 1: but the ledgers have been closed.
- 40:48Speaker 2: We will park down the street as soon as the
- 40:50Speaker 2: car pulled up with them. We waited about a minute
- 40:55Speaker 2: till they got like twenty feet ahead of us, thirty
- 40:57Speaker 2: feet ahead of us, and we started creeping in the
- 41:00Speaker 2: car that we were in.
- 41:03Speaker 1: It's the eleven day of Christmas and it's time to
- 41:06Speaker 1: pay the pipe is January nineteen eighty two, when Joe
- 41:15Speaker 1: the Whale and his son Joe Junior arrived for their
- 41:18Speaker 1: meeting with their mob bosses. Everything seems hunky dory.
- 41:23Speaker 2: They had no idea what was gonna happen to them,
- 41:25Speaker 2: because they walked up the stairs in that house like
- 41:28Speaker 2: nothing was going on them.
- 41:32Speaker 1: They've been cheating the Colombo family and their own kin
- 41:34Speaker 1: for years. As far as they know, no one has
- 41:37Speaker 1: ever noticed. Now here's the problem. The way you find
- 41:41Speaker 1: out they've caught you with your hand in the cookie
- 41:43Speaker 1: jar is very abrupt.
- 41:49Speaker 6: Timing was perfect.
- 41:52Speaker 2: When the sun made us getting out of the car
- 41:54Speaker 2: with the shotguns. He started running across the stoop, but
- 41:58Speaker 2: it was too late for him. You're a gentle and
- 42:02Speaker 2: starts taking over. You know, you have that invincible high feeling.
- 42:08Speaker 2: You know every time you do something like this, your
- 42:10Speaker 2: life is on the line. I mean, cops could pull up,
- 42:13Speaker 2: anything could happen. You can wind up in a shootout,
- 42:16Speaker 2: you could get killed, you could get arrested. Your whole
- 42:19Speaker 2: life could change in five seconds. It was a pretty
- 42:21Speaker 2: pretty precarious situation. The father never got to the door,
- 42:31Speaker 2: he got shot and he laid it, never moved.
- 42:36Speaker 6: We were show that they.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Were both dead, you know, like I was in survival mode.
- 42:42Speaker 2: I wanted to get it done, get in the car
- 42:44Speaker 2: and get out of there could end. And then on
- 42:56Speaker 2: the way home, I was listening to the radio in
- 42:57Speaker 2: the car and I heard that two people were fatally
- 43:00Speaker 2: wounded in Brooklyn and there was a mob hit. And
- 43:05Speaker 2: so I went to bed, thinking job well done.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Not quite. Joe Junior is dead. The well, on the
- 43:16Speaker 1: other hand, has survived yet again. He is not the
- 43:22Speaker 1: second casualty. The second victim is Veronica's are Up, a
- 43:35Speaker 1: social worker and the former nun. She's who really lived

- 44:13Speaker 2: It was bad enough that I was doing these things,
- 44:15Speaker 2: you know, the people in my life, but when a
- 44:19Speaker 2: person that has absolutely nothing to do with this it's killed,
- 44:23Speaker 2: it's devastating.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Joe the whale isn't un scared this time. He's paralyzed.
- 44:33Speaker 1: The cops hope he'll at least cough up the name
- 44:36Speaker 1: of the people who murdered his son.
- 44:39Speaker 2: He would never cooperate with anybody or say anything. He
- 44:44Speaker 2: wouldn't say who picked him up at the diner. He wouldn't.
- 44:47Speaker 2: He wasn't talking about anything.
- 44:50Speaker 1: His silence vise the Whale passed from the Colombos who
- 44:53Speaker 1: suspect that he might just be a mortal.
- 44:57Speaker 7: He kept his mouth shut and was never really targeted
- 45:01Speaker 7: again by the crime family. He was happy to get
- 45:05Speaker 7: out with his life and basically disappear from view.
- 45:11Speaker 1: News of the slaying of a former nun makes headlines,
- 45:15Speaker 1: but with the Whale holding his tongue, investigators get nowhere.
- 45:20Speaker 3: There were no arrests, there were no suspects. There were
- 45:24Speaker 3: a number of unsolved murders, and that was just one
- 45:27Speaker 3: of them.

- 45:56Speaker 4: Park, and it was something that troubled him to the
- 46:00Speaker 4: end of his life to see, you know, these people
- 46:03Speaker 4: that were essentially murderers make hundreds of millions of dollars
- 46:09Speaker 4: where you know he did everything creatively to make this
- 46:14Speaker 4: film and walked away with very little, almost nothing.
- 46:23Speaker 1: The whale wasn't a model. He lasts a few years,
- 46:26Speaker 1: but complications from his wounds eventually take him to that
- 46:29Speaker 1: meeting with his maker brother Tony, nephew Butchy, and the
- 46:34Speaker 1: Colombos reclaim deep droats revenues, but it isn't long after
- 46:39Speaker 1: that home videos come along, pawn becomes mainstream, the big
- 46:44Speaker 1: profits are gone, and the Pirano family just fades into memory.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Hitman sile Mischioda gets out of the mob in nineteen
- 46:54Speaker 1: ninety three. He takes the stand against his former gangster
- 46:58Speaker 1: pals south spends a few years behind bars, but he's
- 47:03Speaker 1: out now.
- 47:05Speaker 2: I've never seen this film, Deep Throat. I don't want
- 47:08Speaker 2: to see it. To me, it's absolutely nothing. It's brought
- 47:15Speaker 2: nothing but trouble and heartache to a lot of people.
- 47:20Speaker 1: And Big Sal counts himself as one of them. He
- 47:25Speaker 1: doesn't know if it was his shot that ended the
- 47:27Speaker 1: life of Veronica Zorah. In the end, he knows it
- 47:35Speaker 1: really doesn't matter. It's on him and it doesn't sit well.
- 47:41Speaker 2: I pray for forgiveness and I pray for her. She
- 47:46Speaker 2: was a good person that did good for people and
- 47:50Speaker 2: I had a hand on her de mice and it
- 47:53Speaker 2: kills me, and you know, I deal with it every day.
- 47:57Speaker 2: It hurts me every days.
- 48:18Speaker 8: Must be
