- 0:41The f A Hey, y'all, welcome today's shaw. We're just gonna pick
- 1:02up where we left off yesterday. The Anglican, who has been questioning the
- 1:07priests, having been thoroughly refuted as to the origins of the Anglican Church,
- 1:14seems to be getting a little worked une. He now states that since the
- 1:21opening of the Bible to her people, God has favored England as no other
- 1:25nation since Israel. They answer, England has progressed materially, but no argument
- 1:32can be deduced from that. God gives temple benefits to good and bad alike.
- 1:36Spiritual blessings are the real blessings. England has rapidly drifted into irreligion altogether,
- 1:42and the book you say she has opened to her people is being torn
- 1:45to shreds and ridiculed by Englishmen in a way which Catholic reference toward the Word
- 1:49of God would never tolerate. He then says Christian conditions came to England with
- 1:55Protestantism, which is absolutely ludicrous. England was among the most advanced centers of
- 2:06Christianity in the world. I mean it was filled with churches and schools and
- 2:15hospitals and orphanages, and I mean the conditions of man were being brought to
- 2:23a higher state than they ever had been on Earth. With the advent of
- 2:30Anglicanism came a genocide against Catholic English subjugation and genocide of the Irish, subjugation
- 2:43of the Scots, the Welsh caste system of higher class in lower class,
- 2:51the poverty we read about, like in Dickens's novels, the reintroduction of slavery.
- 3:00Things were very much not better. That's a really awgard way to put
- 3:05it. Things were much worse in Protestant England than they ever were in Catholic
- 3:12England. England even now looks back at that period as a golden age,
- 3:17the age of chivalry and all that. I mean, it's just an absolutely
- 3:22foolish statement. Now, you would have to say. On the other hand,
- 3:27advances were being made in technology that made some people's lives easier, obviously,
- 3:34But for it to say that the whole of England was better off,
- 3:38no, no, absolutely not. This is it was under Protestant England that
- 3:45England began trying to become an empire, waging wars of conquest, and most
- 3:50of the people of England wanted nothing to do with it. It was called
- 3:53press ganging. They would go out England wanted to go invade somewhere, and
- 3:58they just go out, pull people office to knock them out, put drugs
- 4:01in their drinks, force them to go on ships and act in their Royal
- 4:05Navy or in trade vessels. I mean there were no human rights under Protestant
- 4:13England essentially unless you were in the upper class. That was not true under
- 4:18Catholic England at all. There was a huge difference between Shakespeare and Dickens.
- 4:25I mean, let's just put it that way. I mean, anyway the
- 4:30answer. Christian conditions are rapidly fading in England as a result of Protestantism.
- 4:35Protestant gave men so called liberty to think for themselves, and men have interpreted
- 4:41it as licensed to think whatever they please. The person says, England would
- 4:46still be Catholic had not men taken to thinking, which is utterly absurd.
- 4:51Utterly absurd. Again, go back and read Shakespeare who was Catholic. Again,
- 4:57go back and read Saint Thomas Moore, the greatest legal mind of all
- 5:00time. They had the greatest schools and medical schools arguably in the world,
- 5:11a certainly a rival to anything in France or in Rome. They answer.
- 5:16Englishmen left the Catholic Church originally through fear of their property and their lives.
- 5:21That's right. If you did not become Anglican, if you wouldn't swear to
- 5:26the king, if you were main Catholic, they took your property and then
- 5:30they killed you. At the very least, they took your property and forced
- 5:34you into an indentured servitude or being an absolutely starvation level lower class. Not
- 5:43many desired to share the fate of Saint Thomas Moore and dear Old Henry the
- 5:48eighth had the delightful habit of confiscating all the possessions of those who would not
- 5:53transfer their allegiance from the pope to himself. Four hundred years have dimmed the
- 5:58memory of these things, and no real thought is given to the matter by
- 6:01the average Englishmen. With those who can and do think are rapidly giving up
- 6:05Protestantism and becoming either Agnostics or Catholics. Unfortunately, there is no particular prejudices
- 6:12against becoming an Agnostic, whilst there is still a strong lingering prejudice against becoming
- 6:16a Catholic. Also, to become a Catholic requires more thinking than to become
- 6:21an agnostic and thinking is too much like hard work on such an unimportant matter
- 6:27as the rights of God of a mankind. You know, I mean I
- 6:30say this as someone with about a good third English heritage whose family were English
- 6:35Catholics, and the House of Wessex wants Kings of England. And yes,
- 6:43this is exactly what happened. And you know also a third Irish. And
- 6:49you know, I can tell you a whole lot about the horrors of what
- 6:54the English Protestants have done to Catholics in Ireland, whom they consider to be
- 6:59less than human, less than dogs. And the person says, can you
- 7:05give me six short reasons why you left Anglicanism? He said, certainly.
- 7:10One it's a national church. It's a church of a nation, is the
- 7:13English Church. Two it has no Apostolic succession. Three it has no spiritual
- 7:17authority. Four it omidst much biblical teaching. Five it is chaotic and contradictory
- 7:26in so much as it does retain. And six it has produced no saints
- 7:30of his own. There are many other reasons, but us for six interesting
- 7:34is that there are no Anglican saints. Catholic Church has hundreds thousands. I
- 7:40mean, you know the let's see, well, we'll get two more questions
- 7:46from this person. That's going to wrap up. I think the Anglican section,
- 7:49actually, they says. He says, the Roman Church is built upon
- 7:54one interpretation of Scripture, the Anglican upon another. The latter may be as
- 7:58equally right as the former. And they say, since the Anican Church is
- 8:01a contradiction of the Catholic Church, it could not possibly be equally as right.
- 8:07If one of the two is right, the other must be wrong.
- 8:11Meanwhile, the Anglican Church is not based upon scripture. It is based upon
- 8:15the revolt of Henry the aids from the Catholic Church. Later on, interpretations
- 8:18were read into scripture to suit the church and founded. That is a matter
- 8:22of history. Many other non Catholic churches have been originally based upon peculiar misinterpretations
- 8:28of scripture, and it would be possible to build up hundreds of other churches
- 8:33upon further misrepresentations, as has happened. The Catholic Church, however, whilst
- 8:39in full accord with the true sense of Scripture, is not built upon it.
- 8:43She existed before even a line of the New Testament was written. Her
- 8:48members wrote the New Testament, and she tells us what they really meant when
- 8:52they wrote it. She is built upon the historical person of Christ and proves
- 8:56her divine commission by her continued possession of the attributes Christ conferred upon her.
- 9:03Now that the Gospels are written, they confirm her claims when rightly interpreted.
- 9:09But that is all. If not a line of the New Testament had ever
- 9:11been written, the Catholic Church would still be here. Yes, truly,
- 9:16Jesus left us a church, not a Bible. The Church gave us the
- 9:20Bible. And finally, he says, Anglican ministers are just as good and
- 9:26intelligent as you are, and have studied the Bible just as deeply, and
- 9:31they answer for the sake of argument. Let's suppose that to be true.
- 9:33But that does not make the Anglican Church true. If they are just as
- 9:37learned as Catholic priests, so are Catholic priests learned as they so too,
- 9:45they are just as good. And if learning and character of Anglican ministers make
- 9:50the Anglican Church true, so the learning and character of Catholic priests would make
- 9:54the Catholic Church true. You're forced to the conclusion that the Anglican Church is
- 10:00the only true church, and the Catholic Church is also the only true church.
- 10:03But you cannot have two only true churches. That's a that's a good
- 10:09way to take a part an argument. That's a good logical way to take
- 10:13a part an argument. When someone says this is just as good as that,
- 10:16or this is just as true as that, you could say, but
- 10:20there's one truth and they don't agree. Therefore we have to look at which
- 10:24one is true. All right, Now, let's get into the Father Sparago's
- 10:33book, and we're going to now very appropriately. That's it was wonderful all
- 10:37these two come together. I actually did not plan this when I thought,
- 10:39you know, I'll take radio replies and I'm going to read a couple questions
- 10:43and answers a day. That's going to be like apologetics, you know,
- 10:46and then I'm going to get into the Catechism. I knew I wanted to
- 10:48use Father Sparago's Catechism because it's fantastic. I mean, I think it's literally
- 10:54the best book in say, modern times. And this is eighteen ninety written
- 11:01as an explanation of the Catechism. I mean, I'm not going to get
- 11:05into you know, Thoms Aquinas and all that. But this is I'm talking
- 11:09modern times, and it's much easier for a modern audience to understand. I
- 11:16had no idea how these two were going to mesh together. Is like one
- 11:22is actually explaining the other, and I think it's just fantastic. You know,
- 11:26I don't believe anything happens by coincidence. This is the notes of the
- 11:30True Church, the notes of the true Church. In other words, how
- 11:35do you identify the true Church? When, says Saint Cyprian, the devil
- 11:39saw that the worship of idols was abolished and the Heathen temples empty, he
- 11:43bethought him of a new poison and led men into error under cover of the
- 11:48Christian religion, the poison of false doctrine and pride, through which more than
- 11:54two hundred churches have started up in opposition to the true Church found it by
- 11:58Christ. Saint Cyprian said that in our time, it's more like fifty thousand,
- 12:05depending on how you count Protestant denominations, fifty thousand churches, each of
- 12:11which disagree with each other, all of whom all of which I guess disagree
- 12:16with the Catholic Church, and each of which is founded upon and teaches some
- 12:22level of error. Some are absolute wackado, and some are you know,
- 12:28somewhat close to Catholic teaching. All are founded on error and teach error.
- 12:37Father Spiago continues, Now God has ordained that men should come to the knowledge
- 12:41the truth, i e. That of the True Church, as distinguished from
- 12:46all others by certain marks. These are the marks of the Church. The
- 12:52true Church is the one that is the most persecuted by the world, and
- 12:56which has receives God's seal in the form of miracles. Christ and spoke to
- 13:00his disciples of these persecutions. The servant is not rare that his master.
- 13:03If they have persecuted me, they would persecute you John fifteen twenty. They
- 13:07would deliver you up in councils, and they would scourge you in their synagogues.
- 13:11You shall be hated by all men for my name's sake, Matthew ten
- 13:16seventeen through twenty two. Yay, the hour cometh that whosoever killeth you will
- 13:20think that he doth a service to God John sixteen two. And you may
- 13:26remember that Saint Paul started out just that way, you know, killing Christians,
- 13:31thinking he was doing something as service to God, because you are not
- 13:37of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. Therefore
- 13:39the world hateth you John fifteen nineteen. Never in the history of the Catholic
- 13:43churches have been freed from persecution, very very true, especially to this day.
- 13:50Catholics are persecuted in more mild forms here in the United States, even
- 13:54though the FBI is now arresting people for praying in front of abortion clinics,
- 14:00praying the Rosary, spying in traditional Catholic churches more vehemently in Canada. But
- 14:09the Catholic Church in China, for instance, is a persecuted church. The
- 14:13Catholic Church in Nigeria is an armenia, and it can go down the list.
- 14:18Yeah, they don't just go after Christians in general. They go after
- 14:20the Catholics first. I think that was the oh what was his name,
- 14:26famous Lutheran minister in Germany talking about the Nazis. You know, when they
- 14:33came after the Jews, I didn't say a thing because it wasn't a Jew.
- 14:37When they came after the Catholics, I didn't say things because it was
- 14:39a Catholic. Now they came after me. You know, they're always going
- 14:41to come after the Catholics and Jews first, you know, they come after
- 14:46the chosen people of God, and then they come after the church He founded.
- 14:48They don't really care so much about feel good megachurches, your joel ostein
- 14:56types. You know, they don't worry about them a whole lot at all.
- 15:00The Apostles, especially Saint Paul, were objects of hate to the Jews,
- 15:05and Saint John testifies that their hatred of Christians had not died out in
- 15:09his day, maybe about one sixty six AD. The present day is not
- 15:13wanting in examples and the sufferings inflicted on religious communities and the interference of secular
- 15:18governments and things spiritual in the opposition made to processions and meetings and other devout
- 15:24practices. Could any church be the true Church, which is not the opposite
- 15:28of the spirit of the world. Then Two, it is only in the
- 15:31Catholic Church that we have miracles, those, for instance, of the Apostles,
- 15:35all the Saints, All that the Saints worked in their lifetime and after
- 15:41death, either at the graves or be the application of their relics. We
- 15:45know that God would work miracles only in confirmation of the truth. Point two.
- 15:50The true Church is that one in which the successor of Saint Peter's be
- 15:54found. The church rests upon the Rock and the rock as Saint Peter thou
- 15:58art upon this rock, I will build my church Matthew twenty eight twenty.
- 16:04Where Peter is there is the church at Saint ambroseero point three. The true
- 16:10Church is known by the following fore march. She is one Catholic and Apostolic.
- 16:15The true Church is one. She has at all times and in all
- 16:18places, the same doctrine, the same means of grace, and only one
- 16:22head. Truth can only be one. Hence the teaching of the church cannot
- 16:27change. Christ wished his church to be one. He prayed at the Last
- 16:32Supper John seventeen twenty. I believe there shall be one fold and one shepherd
- 16:37John ten sixteen. He appointed one head for the whole church John twenty one
- 16:44seventeen. The Catholic Church is one. Her catechism the world over teaches precisely
- 16:48the same doctrine. Everywhere. The Holy Sacrifice is offered in the sacraments given
- 16:53in the same way. The same ceremonies and feasts are observed all over the
- 16:57world, which the pope is head of the church. If there were anti
- 17:03popes, it is nonetheless true that someone was the true pope. The existence
- 17:08of many pretenders to a throne does not exclude the claim of the true king.
- 17:14Nor can heresy destroy this unity. For the heretic who refuses to submit
- 17:18is no longer a member of the church. None need accuse the Church of
- 17:22want of progress, because it holds fast to its old established doctrines. There
- 17:26is no true progress in giving up the truth and adopting error. The truth
- 17:30cannot change. Hence, say, you know, my French pronunciation is not
- 17:38They could. Yeah, I'm a third French, but still they could.
- 17:42The French I kind of grew up all It was more like the kind of
- 17:45French you might hear around Louisiana. Not so much proper French anyway. Hence
- 17:51he might say, well, Protestantism, thou art changeable. Therefore thou can'st
- 17:56not be the truth. It's a nice way of putting it true too.
- 18:00The Church is holy e it has the means and the endeavor to lead all
- 18:06men to holiness. Christ founded the Church for the very purpose of making men
- 18:10holy. The Catholic Church is holy all its teaching is lofty and pure.
- 18:15The great principle underlying its commands are self denial and the love of one's neighbor.
- 18:19All its sacraments, and especially penance in the Holy Euchress, are of
- 18:22great aid to the sanctification of mankind, and the complete following out of the
- 18:27evangelical councils can lead a man to the highest point of perfection. Moreover,
- 18:33the Catholic Church as a host of saints whose holiness is attested to by miracles.
- 18:37The misdeeds of some members or abuses occurring within the church or do not
- 18:41the church, but to the perversity of men. Even among the apostles,
- 18:45there was a traitor, and Christ compared some members of the church to weeds
- 18:49and worthless fish. Can anybody be holy which adopts Luther's teaching that faith alone
- 18:55is sufficient for salvation and good works unnecessary, or doctrine that some men are
- 19:00predestined by God to hell fire, Or any church which on its own confession
- 19:06owns that none of its members have been saints and their sanctity confirmed by miracles.
- 19:11Three the churches universal or Catholic I eve she is empowered to receive men
- 19:17into her Bosom in all places, in at all times. Christ died for
- 19:21all men, and on ascending to heaven, gave his apostles submission to teach
- 19:25to all nations of earth till the end of time Matthew or is that twenty
- 19:30eight to twenty Hence the Church was meant to be for all nations, and
- 19:34this is confirmed by the miracles of tongues. At the First Pentecost. The
- 19:38apostles are given the ability to speak all languages, to understand all languages,
- 19:42as are all the saints in heaven. Because they share in that divine nature
- 19:48of Christ. The Catholic Church is universal. Her teaching applies to all people,
- 19:52the Polish, Greek, victorious Roman, the rude Barbarian, as well
- 19:56as the outcast slave. At present, the Church has spread over the whole
- 20:02world. Heretics are everywhere since Saint Augustine, but no particular heresy is everywhere.
- 20:08Again, he gives the numbers of the church in eighteen ninety, and
- 20:12it was the largest church in the world. It still is today. It's
- 20:15actually much larger. But anyone can then any church which depends entirely on the
- 20:22government, for as in since the Russian Church or the Anglican which is Holy
- 20:27National in England, be the true church, or can one which has no
- 20:30real success amon the he then have a claim to truth. For the church's
- 20:36apostolic ie. She comes down from the time of the Apostles, for teaching
- 20:40is always what it was in the time of the Apostles, and her ministers
- 20:44are legitimate successors of the Apostles. The church has built on the foundation of
- 20:48the Apostles, of which Christ is the cornerstone Ephesians two twenty. That is
- 20:52the true church, says Saint Jerome, which was founded by the Apostles and
- 20:56endures into the present day. The Catholic Church, which is apostolic, it
- 21:00has lasted nineteen hundred years. Well, I guess we're what two thousand years
- 21:06now. Luther himself confessed that it was the oldest. Obviously, many actually
- 21:12many Baptists and other Protestants now deny that the Catholic Church is the oldest church.
- 21:18They say there was some church before it, And you know, you
- 21:21could show in the words of Martin Luther, you know, that might convince
- 21:23them. Probably won't. Just ask them to show you some archaeological evidence of
- 21:29an earlier church, any earlier church one writing, one building one anything.
- 21:37There isn't any The teachings of the oldest followers agrees perfectly with our catechism,
- 21:45and our services are substantially the same as those are the First Age. It's
- 21:48true the d dot K, which is the teachings of the Twelve written before
- 21:52the New Testament was even completed, before the Bible was compiled, is essentially
- 21:57identical, just shorter, much shorter. It's only I don't even know of
- 22:03maybe twenty to thirty pages as a modern catechism. As the Catechism of the
- 22:07Catholic Church, I mean the one that came out, you know, just
- 22:14a couple of decades ago, that Pope John Paul the Second signed off on.
- 22:18You will read the exact same things in both The consideration of these notes
- 22:22and Marx has in the course of ages led many of the noblest men into
- 22:26the bosom of the Catholic Church. It is remarkable that the men of the
- 22:30greatest learning in virtue, have, even in the face of great sacrifices,
- 22:36entered the Catholic Church, while those who have deserted it have generally shown by
- 22:40their lives what they really were. We have reason to rejoice in our religion,
- 22:44that it offers us such special consolation and trouble and at the hour of
- 22:48death. Thus, this is another one I have trouble with. Melanthon M
- 22:56E l A n c tho. In one of these days, I am
- 23:00going to have to, like I don't know, get babbel or something and
- 23:03learn proper French melansomp I guess wrote in his wrote to his Catholic mother,
- 23:11the Protestant faith is the best one in Oh, yes, now I remember
- 23:15who this was. He yes, A M E l A N c th
- 23:19h O N. He was a Lutheran. He was a contemporary of Martin
- 23:23Luther. And he may have been Swiss maybe, But anyway, he said
- 23:33in a letter to his mother, the Protestant faith is the best one to
- 23:37live in, but the Catholic faith the best to die in. And again
- 23:41the new religion makes the best show. The Catholic gives most security. So
- 23:47here was a Lutheran who had abandoned the Catholic Church admitting that, well,
- 23:52it might be a whole lot more fun to be Protestant, and it is.
- 23:56Trust me, I've been Protestant. You'll have a whole lot more fun
- 24:00in an Evangelical Protestant church and a Baptist church. Especially if you're single,
- 24:03they have singles groups. They have a lot of stuff that we probably ought
- 24:08to have in the Catholic Church. You know, we go into church silently.
- 24:12We you know Geni Fleck Neil, sit silently, We do our Catholic
- 24:18calisthenics. We only acknowledge each other the sign of the Greed, sign of
- 24:23peace, and then we leave silently, get in the cars and drive away.
- 24:26There is like for most of us, especially single folks over the age
- 24:30of eighteen or after college especially, I'll just put it that way. After
- 24:34college, if you're still single, there is nothing you're invited to at that
- 24:40church until you If you have kids, it's different. You're retired. They
- 24:45have things for, you know, the old folks. We could definitely bring
- 24:48a lot more people into the church by adopting some of those social you know,
- 24:55fellowship programs that Protestant churches have. I am a huge advocate for that,
- 25:00especially because I'm a single guy and I'd love to meet a single Catholic
- 25:03woman and actually have a chance of getting married. There aren't many single Catholic
- 25:07women where I live in the mountains of North Carolina, believe it or not.
- 25:10I'm usually the only single guy between the age of eighteen and eighty when
- 25:14I walk into a church, and usually the only Southerner as well. But
- 25:18that's not the point. Protestantism takes away all the burdens and going to confession
- 25:23and worrying about what's a mortal sin and what's a venial sin? And you
- 25:27know, I mean Martin Luther even advised one of his lady and his congregation
- 25:32to have extramural affairs. I mean, they got rid of all notion of
- 25:37you do that and you're going to help basically, So yeah, they could
- 25:40have a lot more fun as a Protestant, and in England and well in
- 25:45Germany at that time, they could be a lot more prosperous and successful because
- 25:49the Catholics are being persecuted. But here is one of the founders of the
- 25:53Lutheran Church saying, I'll quote it again because you're going to want to learn
- 25:57this quote. I use it a lot. I can't pronounce his name.
- 26:00I'm gonna have to figure that out anyway. The Protestant faith is the best
- 26:06one to live in, but the Catholic is the best to die. Him
- 26:11and the new religion that is Protestantism makes the best show, but the Catholic
- 26:15gives the most security. In other words, we have the most hope of
- 26:19actually going to Heaven. See all, I wrap it up there, let's
- 26:25again. I forgot to do this last time. With the words of Saint
- 26:27Padre Pio, pray, hope and don't worry, and I'll talk to you
- 26:30next time.
