- 0:00Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk Podcast.
- 0:03This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads that
- 0:06shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink.
- 0:10And I'm your host Will Walden One.
- 0:12More thing before we start, Google Podcasts is being
- 0:16discontinued by Google. So if you want to continue

- 0:29find our our podcast through Google products.
- 0:32Thank you so much for understanding.
- 0:33I had no control. Over this.
- 0:35Google pulled the Google Podcast app off of Android, and I want
- 0:39to let you know where to continue finding the show.
- 0:41Over at YouTube Music Search for Elon Musk podcast Thank you so
- 0:46much. Elon Musk and SpaceX have been
- 0:49building Starship down at Starbase for the last few years.
- 0:53This is the 4th flight coming up and it's possibly going to be
- 0:56happening in the next few weeks. There are some things that Elon,
- 1:00SpaceX has to do in order to make this flight successful.
- 1:03Flight 1-2 and three were pretty successful in the whole grand
- 1:07scheme of things. They have to do basically the
- 1:09same thing as flight 3, clear the pad hot staging.
- 1:12They have to do a boost back burn for the booster and they
- 1:16have to possibly soft land the booster in the Gulf of Mexico.
- 1:20Now, Elon Musk just recently said that if Flight 4 goes well,
- 1:25Flight 5, they're going to try to land the Starships booster
- 1:29back at the Starbase launch facility.
- 1:31You have to be kind of skeptical about what Elon says.
- 1:35SpaceX is amazing, but you have to understand that some of the
- 1:39expectations that Elon sets are way high compared to the
- 1:44actuality of the situation. So if they do land soft land the
- 1:49booster in the Gulf of Mexico, there's a possibility that
- 1:53Flight 5 could see them landing it on land at the launch
- 1:59facility at the tower. Think about that for a second.
- 2:03What could happen if this goes wrong?
- 2:06Boost back, burn, lip maneuver, everything goes great for the
- 2:11booster. The ship is still flying through
- 2:14to orbit and doing its thing, which is a whole other
- 2:17conversation. But if the booster does make it
- 2:21back to a soft landing in the Gulf of Mexico, they're doing
- 2:25basically a virtual landing with the booster and the catch arms
- 2:30and the tower. So basically you have a landing
- 2:33spot in the Gulf of Mexico that they've partitioned off, so to
- 2:37say. That will be a tower and they'll
- 2:40go through the maneuvers of the booster hovering in the catch
- 2:44arms not physically closing. There's no catch arms out there
- 2:47on the Gulf, but they will stay there for a certain amount of
- 2:49time. They'll hover down, slow hover
- 2:50down to the catch arms, and when the arms catch it, slowly
- 2:55release the engines engine shut off.
- 2:59And then from there the booster will fall into the Gulf of
- 3:02Mexico. And that would be fantastic.
- 3:04If they could do that, Flight 4, that would be fantastic.
- 3:08But think about it like this. What happens if Flight 4 was an
- 3:12anomaly? What happens if Flight 4 was
- 3:15just, like, good luck? Like, of course engineering is
- 3:18great. I love engineering, and I love
- 3:20the engineers of SpaceX. I know a few of them and they're
- 3:22great people. But what if this was one of
- 3:25those things that they just got everything right this time and
- 3:29maybe next time? It's not so perfect.
- 3:32That's happened before with SpaceX.
- 3:34They've done this before. They've had numerous boosters
- 3:38land for Falcon Nine in a row and everything looked great.
- 3:42All of a sudden a booster lands tips over, blows up, and same
- 3:46thing could happen with Starship's booster.
- 3:48Now mind you, the fuel that would have been spent on the
- 3:52boost back, burn and flying back and hovering would basically
- 3:56deplete most if not all of the fuel in the booster.
- 4:00So the booster itself not really explosive, not as much as say, a
- 4:05Falcon Nine. You also use different kind of
- 4:07fuels. The fuel in the booster for
- 4:09Starship is not as explosive or combustible as the Falcon 9.
- 4:15So starship's booster probably not going to explode if it does
- 4:19land on the catch arms and something happens to it.
- 4:23But mind you, The thing is made out of basically a tube of
- 4:28shrapnel. It's a 250 foot tall stainless
- 4:33steel tube full of electronics, full of motors, wiring, things
- 4:39like that. And you gotta think what would
- 4:41happen if they did get it over land, if they got it over the
- 4:45tower and something were to happen to it.
- 4:47Shrapnel everywhere. And I'm, I don't like to say
- 4:50things like that. I don't want that to happen.
- 4:53What I want to happen is this thing to be completely
- 4:56successful on flight 4 and then on flight 5 I want them to land
- 5:00it perfectly at the catch arms at the tower.
- 5:03Everything is great, but there is a possibility, a small
- 5:07possibility. The four is anomaly and five
- 5:09works. Elon is happy with flight 4 and
- 5:12it landing in the Gulf and to go on to flight 5 and to land at
- 5:16the tower. I'm totally fine with that, but
- 5:19I don't see it happening for flight 5.
- 5:21Elon said if this happens in Flight 4 too, By the way.
- 5:24He said that in the latest Star Starship talk.
- 5:26You see it on the channel, go check it out.
- 5:28But if I don't know what do you think?
- 5:31Let me know in the comments down below.
- 5:32I wouldn't have a conversation about this because I don't
- 5:36nobody really knows what's gonna happen for Flight 4 because
- 5:39nobody really we know like the flight pattern.
- 5:41It's gotta be similar to flight 3.
- 5:42As far as we know. The only thing a few things that
- 5:45are gonna be different but one of the major things is Elon
- 5:48wants to make sure that the Starship is that basically burn
- 5:53up temperature and land it in the Indian Ocean, possibly self
- 5:59detonated over the Indian Ocean. They do have a bunch of flights
- 6:03planned out and they do have combustion warnings over the
- 6:06Indian Ocean. So is the possibility that they
- 6:09do land the Starship and that's the big one, that's the big one.
- 6:12They want to do the booster and landing in the Gulf of Mexico
- 6:16also a big deal about this. So those two things are the huge
- 6:20deals for the next Starship flight.
- 6:22So if they can get Starship through the atmosphere so it
- 6:27doesn't burn up, they have to get it to an extreme
- 6:31temperature, the most extreme temperature of the Starship has
- 6:34ever faced. And if they do that, this
- 6:38mission will be a success. If they don't do the boost back
- 6:41burn and the booster landing at the tower or at the imaginary
- 6:46tower in the Gulf of Mexico, I think that's gonna be OK.
- 6:50But Elon says, of course they want to do that.
- 6:53They want to make sure that it all works out.
- 6:54We'll see. I don't know.
- 6:55Let me know down below because I'm torn here.
- 6:57I don't think they should rush it.
- 6:59I think they should do 5 perfect flights of the booster.
- 7:03I know they only have up to 9 flights every year for the
- 7:07Starship, so I guess they're going to go.
- 7:09They got to go for it, right? It seems like they just have to
- 7:12take some chances here. Now I want to go back to the
- 7:15shrapnel part of it as well. The whole booster is stainless
- 7:19steel. The whole thing is super sharp
- 7:22if you think about it. If something goes arise,
- 7:25something goes haywire and they explode the booster for some
- 7:29reason. There's shrapnel everywhere.
- 7:31There's pipes, there's tubes, there's wiring, there's
- 7:34harnesses, there's vehicles. Whatever's around the Starship
- 7:40launch facility could get extremely damaged.
- 7:43Think about just imagine a shrapnel piece this large
- 7:47ripping through part of a launch tower.
- 7:51I know they have cladding on it, I know they have protection on
- 7:54it, but some parts are not protected as well as others.
- 7:57So there's a possibility, even if it's a slim possibility, then
- 8:01some of the ground systems could get damaged if they try this on
- 8:05flight 5. That's my real big concern is
- 8:09the ground systems at Starbase and how fast would they be able
- 8:13to rebuild them. They probably have other parts.
- 8:17It seems like they would have other parts there, replacement
- 8:19parts, or they can ship them in or build them or whatever.
- 8:22But it seems like SpaceX may be taking this risk a little bit
- 8:27too lightly. If Flight 4 is perfect again,
- 8:32let me know in the comments down below.
- 8:34I want to know what you think because I'm torn here.
- 8:36I would love this to work. I would love for the spectacle,
- 8:40the absolute spectacle of flight 5, to land on the tower, catch
- 8:46arms, lower it down, refurbish the booster possibly, and fly it
- 8:51again. That would be amazing.
- 8:53I don't think the flying again is going to happen, but if they
- 8:55catch it, they lower it down. That would be fantastic.
- 8:59I would love it. I would absolutely love that,
- 9:02that I think there's a possibility I but still I need
