Latest / HEAVY Music Interviews / The Re-Evolution Of DEVILSKIN With PAUL MARTIN
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: How they heavy folk. I'm Paul Martin. I played the
- 0:23Speaker 1: bass guitar in a band called Devil Skin. We're based
- 0:26Speaker 1: here in Hamilton, New Zealand. We've been going about fifteen years.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Jenny Scoolen is our lead vocalist, my son Nick Martin
- 0:33Speaker 1: on the drums, and my evil twin Nail on lead guitar.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I've just got a brand new album out. It's called
- 0:39Speaker 1: Revolution and it comes out on the eleventh, which is
- 0:43Speaker 1: now pretty much so we're really excited.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah, so thanks for join us, Bray.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Yeah, man, I'm stoked to be here. Thanks for thanks
- 0:51Speaker 1: for your time.
- 0:51Speaker 2: My pleasure.
- 0:53Speaker 3: As you mentioned, the good news is Devil Skin do
- 0:55Speaker 3: you return with your sixth viudio album, re Evolution this Friday,
- 0:58Speaker 3: July the eleventh. So hey, you feeling mate? I know
- 1:01Speaker 3: it's a lot of hard work goes into it, but
- 1:02Speaker 3: how do you feel? And now they finish lines oppression?
- 1:04Speaker 1: Oh it's good man. It's like it's like that painful
- 1:07Speaker 1: bit we are in labor and the beautiful products about
- 1:11Speaker 1: to pop out, but at the moment it's like getting
- 1:13Speaker 1: everything sort of squeezed into the right places and mailing
- 1:17Speaker 1: everything out. Man. We've had so many orders from all
- 1:19Speaker 1: over the world, so I've been busy blooming, licking stamps
- 1:22Speaker 1: and sealing envelopes. So it's really exciting. It's it's good.
- 1:26Speaker 1: It's like it's our sixth release, you know, so each
- 1:29Speaker 1: one I'm still excited like a kid in a candy store.
- 1:33Speaker 3: The date you've released this single was Half Life and
- 1:35Speaker 3: the Smalter, So are there you got sonic representation of
- 1:38Speaker 3: what to expect.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I think there's I think there's a little bit of
- 1:41Speaker 1: everything on this album. I don't I don't think there's
- 1:44Speaker 1: two songs that are quite alike. So yeah, they're all
- 1:47Speaker 1: kind of different in their own ways. It's hard to
- 1:49Speaker 1: say because it's like, you know, it's like which your
- 1:51Speaker 1: children is your favorite?
- 1:52Speaker 2: You know everyone, you're just not allowed to say it.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's it's a glimpse into what's on
- 1:59Speaker 1: the definitely those two singles, and you know, we've got
- 2:02Speaker 1: some really good numbers with Swelter, the Swelter video. We've
- 2:06Speaker 1: kind of chucked that together in a bit of a
- 2:08Speaker 1: rush and it seems to be doing really well. And
- 2:12Speaker 1: we'll get near play with Half Life of Dreams too,
- 2:15Speaker 1: so that's you know, we're stoked nice.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Well.
- 2:19Speaker 3: I love the way the album starts broad like you
- 2:21Speaker 3: got the song rad as the opener, Like, It's a slow,
- 2:23Speaker 3: charming build up that gradually gets louder and more in tenders,
- 2:26Speaker 3: and then there's a cool little bass run that sparks
- 2:29Speaker 3: everyone into action. May like, what was the thought process
- 2:31Speaker 3: going going into that particular song.
- 2:34Speaker 1: With the whole album, We wanted to be bold. We
- 2:37Speaker 1: just wanted everything to be you know, we just wanted
- 2:39Speaker 1: to be more of everything. So I think when Nick
- 2:44Speaker 1: was mucking around with that song, initially he goes, we
- 2:46Speaker 1: need something to open the album with it real smash,
- 2:48Speaker 1: you know. So he spent ages in his studio at
- 2:51Speaker 1: home putting some pieces together, and yeah, basically that's what
- 2:55Speaker 1: we got on the album. So we just want it
- 2:57Speaker 1: to be big. We want it to be immersive. You in,
- 3:00Speaker 1: it just gets larger and larger and larger and then boom.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it's the first time in my memory made that
- 3:06Speaker 3: I can recall a base run introducing an album They
- 3:09Speaker 3: like how much?
- 3:10Speaker 2: How much that.
- 3:14Speaker 1: It's weird. We don't even think of things like that.
- 3:16Speaker 1: It's all it's all about the song first. But yeah,
- 3:19Speaker 1: there's someone mentioned it the other day. And I think
- 3:21Speaker 1: there's only a couple of songs that we play that
- 3:23Speaker 1: I actually start, which you know, I've never even thought
- 3:27Speaker 1: about it. It's just the way that the way they
- 3:29Speaker 1: come together. But yeah, there's a it's a stonking fat
- 3:32Speaker 1: base for if that needs to be heard by itself,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and it makes a statement with the song, and the
- 3:36Speaker 1: song's all about like losing your ship and being that
- 3:40Speaker 1: freaking mad you're in a red mist, you know, so,
- 3:43Speaker 1: so we wanted that song to have full impact. So yeah,
- 3:46Speaker 1: pretty happy with the way it came out.
- 3:48Speaker 3: I bet you Now we're at a band quote that
- 3:50Speaker 3: said that we really approach this album from a different perspective.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Can you elaborate on that first?
- 3:56Speaker 1: Yeah? Sure, I guess. We had a bunch of songs
- 4:01Speaker 1: and we wanted a bunch more songs, So there was
- 4:03Speaker 1: stuff that we had that we really wanted to include
- 4:06Speaker 1: in the album, but we were really excited to We
- 4:09Speaker 1: had all these ideas that we needed to put down
- 4:10Speaker 1: as well, so that the writing process was just continually going,
- 4:14Speaker 1: and just the way that we were sharing demos and
- 4:17Speaker 1: stuff between us. We've each got little studio setups at
- 4:20Speaker 1: home now so we can do the basics and that,
- 4:22Speaker 1: and just getting the songs arranged so tightly before we
- 4:26Speaker 1: went into the studio. I don't think we've ever been
- 4:28Speaker 1: that prepared, and usually we go, oh, we're super prepared
- 4:30Speaker 1: this time, but this time I think we were. You know,
- 4:34Speaker 1: we absolutely knew everything we were going to do, and
- 4:37Speaker 1: you know, we had I think was twelve or fourteen
- 4:39Speaker 1: days booked in the studio and a solid block and
- 4:41Speaker 1: it was good. It was immersive. You're doing twelve hour
- 4:43Speaker 1: days and you're just living and breathing it. So it's
- 4:46Speaker 1: the best way to you know, create, I think make
- 4:51Speaker 1: sure everything's organic and everything's just happening with us four
- 4:54Speaker 1: in the room. So it did feel good. And we're
- 4:58Speaker 1: in a different studio. We used Parachute Studios in Auckland.
- 5:02Speaker 1: We usually go to Neil Finn's place Roundhead Studios, but yeah,
- 5:06Speaker 1: we wanted to try something different, different mojo, different vibe
- 5:10Speaker 1: and yeah, lovely people. We absolutely love that experience here.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Actually, can we go to.
- 5:14Speaker 3: That a bit deeper because what artists do you talk
- 5:16Speaker 3: about shifted studios and it changes the album like but
- 5:19Speaker 3: from a Laybur's point of view, like people on myself
- 5:21Speaker 3: that have never been in the studio, Like, how can
- 5:23Speaker 3: that affect an album?
- 5:26Speaker 1: Mojo? I guess is the is the simplest term. It's
- 5:30Speaker 1: where you feel creatively inspired, where you feel comfortable, you know,
- 5:36Speaker 1: like you can go into rooms and you know, with
- 5:38Speaker 1: bands and in venues, you feel in venues too, Sometimes
- 5:41Speaker 1: you walk into a room and it's like, ah, doesn't
- 5:43Speaker 1: quite have that good vibe. You full up with the
- 5:45Speaker 1: right people, and it can do. But you know, some
- 5:48Speaker 1: especially creative spaces, some places definitely have a good feel
- 5:51Speaker 1: about them. And I guess for us it was because
- 5:54Speaker 1: we've recorded so many times in the one place that
- 5:57Speaker 1: was really good to step outside our comfort zone and
- 6:00Speaker 1: go to this this new place with a bunch of
- 6:03Speaker 1: new people who are all vibed up and you know,
- 6:05Speaker 1: like they can't remember the last time son booked out
- 6:08Speaker 1: their studio for so long in one block, you know,
- 6:11Speaker 1: because most bands just do a couple of days here
- 6:14Speaker 1: and there. Yeah, we wanted to immerse ourselves and I
- 6:18Speaker 1: think that's you know, it comes across in the music
- 6:21Speaker 1: on the album that we were in there and we're
- 6:24Speaker 1: up to our next in it, you know.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Yeah, this is also the first time you've had a
- 6:28Speaker 3: guest artist on your record. You've got Nick Barker from
- 6:30Speaker 3: Trolford Ninja and Joe Holtes from Naalston. So tell us
- 6:34Speaker 3: about the songs there on and what each of them
- 6:35Speaker 3: brought to.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Okay. So it's a song called have I Come Undone,
- 6:40Speaker 1: and it's basically about being at a funeral and and
- 6:45Speaker 1: and seeing all your friends and just you know, a
- 6:50Speaker 1: realization of you, of death and everything like that. I
- 6:55Speaker 1: guess that comes with it. So a sad, poignant song.
- 6:59Speaker 1: And Ginny and I worked on the lyrics together and
- 7:03Speaker 1: she sang it and we thought, well, maybe we could
- 7:05Speaker 1: almost use another voice in this. And she's mentioned a
- 7:10Speaker 1: few times that you know, who would you love to
- 7:13Speaker 1: work with you and who would you absolutely love to
- 7:14Speaker 1: sing on an album with, and she always said Nick
- 7:17Speaker 1: from twelve Foot Ninja, and we're like, hey, man, let's
- 7:19Speaker 1: just make this happen because he's a sweet dude. We've
- 7:22Speaker 1: done a few shows with him and get on like
- 7:25Speaker 1: alse and fire is such a lovely guy. And yet
- 7:27Speaker 1: he digs our band and absolutely loved the song and
- 7:31Speaker 1: what he's added to it is just it's just gives
- 7:33Speaker 1: me chills, absolutely beautiful, and you know, we've got a
- 7:37Speaker 1: great relationship with Hail Storm from touring with him over
- 7:40Speaker 1: the years as well. So Nail went over and stayed
- 7:44Speaker 1: with Joe and Lizzie a little while ago in Memphis
- 7:46Speaker 1: and floated the idea of, Hey, you know, would you
- 7:49Speaker 1: be into playing guitar on the track show? And he's
- 7:51Speaker 1: like hell yeah, so yeah, bang it was done and
- 7:55Speaker 1: it's gorgeous, piece of gorgeous piece of guitar. Really is nice.
- 7:59Speaker 1: So you just these these two outside influences, like, like
- 8:03Speaker 1: you say, we've never ever used, you know, collaborated with
- 8:06Speaker 1: anyone in the studio before. So to have these two
- 8:09Speaker 1: megastars that we're huge fans of on the one song
- 8:12Speaker 1: just added that much gravitate to the whole thing and
- 8:15Speaker 1: just made it feel that much more special.
- 8:17Speaker 2: He couldn't fit Lizzie on There is only rum Oh.
- 8:20Speaker 1: There's always room for Lizzie, I tell you not this time.
- 8:23Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, you know, we've we've been working, we've
- 8:26Speaker 1: been talking for a while.
- 8:27Speaker 2: So you know, who knows watching Space Space.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Yeah, they're just finishing up with their label at the moment,
- 8:33Speaker 1: doing their last album with the Slabel, so you know
- 8:37Speaker 1: the future that who knows what's around the Corner. We've
- 8:39Speaker 1: got one other guests on the album as well, and
- 8:43Speaker 1: it's a guy called Joe gil Fillin and he's he
- 8:47Speaker 1: does the he's a legend New Zealand broadcaster and he
- 8:52Speaker 1: reads the news and man, he can he can talk
- 8:56Speaker 1: about the most heinous of crimes and you just lost
- 8:59Speaker 1: in his voice, he said, Scott's beautiful voice. So we
- 9:01Speaker 1: had this part and the song called Celestial and we
- 9:06Speaker 1: ad met him at the awards do an Auckland and
- 9:09Speaker 1: he come up and said I'm a big fan of
- 9:10Speaker 1: the band. And I was like, man, he mess your
- 9:13Speaker 1: voice like wow, and he's yeah, it's just this lovely guy.
- 9:16Speaker 1: And I missage to him and said, hey, dude, you
- 9:18Speaker 1: know the credd a little space for you on our album.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Would you be interested? And he was absolutely over the moon.
- 9:24Speaker 1: So yeah, Rapp to have his beautiful dulcet tones on there.
- 9:28Speaker 2: But what track was that one?
- 9:30Speaker 1: Celestial? Someone was spoken spoken word piece?
- 9:35Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, gravity Tech. I want to talk about the
- 9:45Speaker 2: album title re Evolution, Like I noticed there's no song
- 9:47Speaker 2: on there by that name, so it means it's got
- 9:49Speaker 2: out a bit deep.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Never probably on the next album, because that's what we
- 9:55Speaker 1: do we Rise wasn't on the Wee Rise album. It
- 9:59Speaker 1: was on Be Like the but the song be Like
- 10:01Speaker 1: the River was on the Red album. But now we've
- 10:04Speaker 1: got the song read on this album, so who knows?
- 10:08Speaker 2: Is that by designolgic coincidence?
- 10:11Speaker 1: It kind of just started happening. And then we thought
- 10:13Speaker 1: on this this stage, well, you know, we're gonna leave
- 10:16Speaker 1: the door open to write a song called re Evolution.
- 10:18Speaker 1: But yeah, now came up with a title and we're
- 10:20Speaker 1: in the studio and it just we all just went wow, perfect.
- 10:23Speaker 1: You know, usually there's a bit of fisty cuffs over
- 10:27Speaker 1: album titles and stuff like that, and you know everyone's
- 10:29Speaker 1: trying to get where everyone else is coming from. But yeah,
- 10:33Speaker 1: we just sat down one night and now said re evolution.
- 10:36Speaker 1: And then we come up with the idea of the
- 10:37Speaker 1: spiral and the you know, like going basically evolve, evolution, evolving,
- 10:44Speaker 1: And we feel that this album we wanted to be
- 10:47Speaker 1: bold and show that we had evolved to another stage.
- 10:50Speaker 1: You know, the bands that are I think we've all
- 10:51Speaker 1: picked up our chops a little bit a bit more
- 10:53Speaker 1: on this album and dug in and you crowded something
- 10:57Speaker 1: pretty special.
- 10:59Speaker 3: How spaging a pointcidents re Evolutions being released eleven years
- 11:03Speaker 3: after the release of your debut re Rise, So that's
- 11:05Speaker 3: the can't be coincidence, can it.
- 11:08Speaker 1: We saw that date pop up and we thought, oh,
- 11:10Speaker 1: it's probably a bit sooner than we'll be ready for.
- 11:13Speaker 1: And then we were just help for Leather and yeah,
- 11:16Speaker 1: we're all about little things like that that, you know,
- 11:18Speaker 1: the serendipity of being in a rock and roll band
- 11:21Speaker 1: for fifteen years. And you know, this last tour was
- 11:25Speaker 1: really cool because we had not three generations of family,
- 11:28Speaker 1: you know, that's several of these gigs, because there's quite
- 11:30Speaker 1: a few all ages shows, and yeah, it's just it's
- 11:35Speaker 1: just really called the cross section of people that we
- 11:37Speaker 1: seem to be sort of interacting with on these tours
- 11:41Speaker 1: and with our music, and yeah, it just feels like
- 11:43Speaker 1: a beautiful thing. And you know, we're evolving and our
- 11:47Speaker 1: audience were evolving with us, you know.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:50Speaker 3: Now there's another quote in the President says re Evolution
- 11:53Speaker 3: shows just how far they have come in their fifteen
- 11:55Speaker 3: year history. Like from your point of view being inside
- 11:58Speaker 3: the band, how much has your music change?
- 12:00Speaker 2: Still great and over that journey.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Well, speaking for myself, I'd just like to say that
- 12:06Speaker 1: hopefully I've grinded as a songwriter. I feel like I've
- 12:09Speaker 1: sort of matured in a lot of ways. You could
- 12:11Speaker 1: call it stewing in your own juices, I guess after
- 12:14Speaker 1: being alive for so long, But I don't know. I
- 12:18Speaker 1: just feel collectively we've matured as songwriters definitely, and sonically,
- 12:24Speaker 1: we've got better at our craft and we just have
- 12:28Speaker 1: a better feel for what we're doing. I mean, none
- 12:31Speaker 1: of us envisioned, you know, from day one or from
- 12:33Speaker 1: album one, even that you know would still be doing
- 12:37Speaker 1: this for fifteen years and have a catalog with six
- 12:40Speaker 1: albums or six releases, I should say so, yes, I
- 12:45Speaker 1: mean every day is a blessing, and I think that
- 12:49Speaker 1: sticking with it is just testament to the strength of
- 12:52Speaker 1: the four of us and having our creative vision that
- 12:56Speaker 1: we've sort of held on to for so long and
- 12:59Speaker 1: just being in there to realize it.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Yeah. Nice, nice Now.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Devilskin also recently won the twenty twenty five am A
- 13:07Speaker 3: People's Choice Awards. Mate, So firstly, congratulations, but secondly, what
- 13:10Speaker 3: does that mean to you as a band.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Oh, it's probably the best awards out of any awards
- 13:16Speaker 1: that they can give. You know, there's there's all the
- 13:18Speaker 1: genres and stuff like that. We were nominated for Best
- 13:21Speaker 1: Rock Artists, but we dipped out. But here's the toy
- 13:25Speaker 1: and it's people's choice. So that is absolutely the best
- 13:30Speaker 1: one you can you can ever get, I think, you know.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So we're really stoked that. You know, we're up against
- 13:36Speaker 1: some pretty heavy competition and you know, little old New Zealand.
- 13:40Speaker 1: We're still a bogan rock band, so not the flavor
- 13:44Speaker 1: of the month in the industry or anything like that.
- 13:45Speaker 1: We're still going to be the outleayers, you know, being
- 13:47Speaker 1: the rockers. But man, that was yeah, absolutely amazing. We're
- 13:52Speaker 1: stoked with that.
- 13:53Speaker 2: It was tell me it was this photo taken when
- 13:56Speaker 2: you were announced.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, I mean yeah, sober everything, and it was
- 14:05Speaker 1: just that shocked. You know, we were surrounded by all
- 14:09Speaker 1: these blooming luminaries from the New Zealand industry and you know,
- 14:12Speaker 1: I didn't think we'd be going home with anything when
- 14:15Speaker 1: they went through that and they named all these names
- 14:17Speaker 1: and then I thought there's only one left and it
- 14:19Speaker 1: won't be us, and it was us, and holy crap.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Yeah, man, if anything that photo there like, it's so
- 14:28Speaker 3: sorry to keep bringing it up. But a lot of
- 14:30Speaker 3: people say that things in the music industry are reagged,
- 14:32Speaker 3: you know, but that photo there proves that you had
- 14:34Speaker 3: no idea that you were winning that before it came up.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Oh, absolutely, no idea. I don't know how much of
- 14:39Speaker 1: the thing is rigged. They don't tell us for this,
- 14:41Speaker 1: but yeah, I mean it was. It's pretty real for us.
- 14:44Speaker 2: And I shouldn't have said rigged it in the right word.
- 14:47Speaker 2: They think that the band is what I meant, that
- 14:52Speaker 2: is genuine, genuine I'm shut again, oh bro, genuine surprise.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Oh my god, Yeah, yeah it was. It was. Yeah,
- 15:03Speaker 1: it was a really cool night. And you know, to
- 15:05Speaker 1: be honest, like that was really cool. And then to
- 15:07Speaker 1: be able to walk past holding that trophy and walk
- 15:09Speaker 1: past this other rock station that has never ever touched
- 15:13Speaker 1: us and won't touch anything that we record for some reason,
- 15:16Speaker 1: and went, hey, well check that out, people's choice, you know,
- 15:19Speaker 1: good idea. Yeah, these are mystery things, you know, we
- 15:25Speaker 1: don't we don't really feel like we fit into a
- 15:27Speaker 1: lot of those spaces with all those people. But yeah,
- 15:30Speaker 1: nice to definitely nice to get neck. I added, like that,
- 15:32Speaker 1: holy crap, the very best.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Runner.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Thank you man. Cheers, good, good, passionate rock audience and
- 15:40Speaker 1: middle audience here in New Zealand, and they just proved
- 15:43Speaker 1: that to everyone. So you know, yeah, happy to take
- 15:46Speaker 1: the award for that.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Now you just wound up an eleven day tour in
- 15:51Speaker 3: New Zealand. Bro, So how did the new songs go down?
- 15:53Speaker 1: Lives really good. We played six of them live and
- 15:57Speaker 1: just sprinkled them throughout the set. We kicked off with
- 16:00Speaker 1: red track one from the album and so people really
- 16:03Speaker 1: didn't know what they were getting and yeah, just it
- 16:07Speaker 1: just felt seamless, felt really good. There's a real big
- 16:11Speaker 1: energy live for the song Swelter. That video just seems
- 16:14Speaker 1: to be you know, hitting some spots with some people.
- 16:17Speaker 1: So yeah, everyone's sort of gravitating towards these new songs
- 16:23Speaker 1: and you know we're just chucking them in amongst the
- 16:26Speaker 1: wrist and it just seems feel seamless. So yeah, we're
- 16:29Speaker 1: really happy.
- 16:31Speaker 2: You do know it's only a short plane ride from
- 16:32Speaker 2: New Zealand to Australia.
- 16:34Speaker 1: One hundred percent. Man, Yeah, oh yeah, I can't wait.
- 16:37Speaker 2: What's happening?
- 16:39Speaker 1: Well, we just we just need to work out some
- 16:41Speaker 1: some dates to get over there and do it, because yeah,
- 16:45Speaker 1: we need to get over there and represent this album.
- 16:47Speaker 3: Nice nice, Now, since I spoked you last time, bro,
- 16:50Speaker 3: you might have had a rough idea with the photo
- 16:51Speaker 3: I showed you before. But I've got a new segment
- 16:53Speaker 3: called photo Bomb, so basically gold through your social media
- 16:56Speaker 3: and I've come up with a few photos and I
- 16:58Speaker 3: think people good on you.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Now too bad? Actually, mate? Like this one here? Where
- 17:06Speaker 2: is it? This was taken? The Devil Skins first have
- 17:08Speaker 2: a show around twenty twelve, Like, do you remember this night?
- 17:11Speaker 2: And how long did it take you to get a
- 17:13Speaker 2: lot of proper live performance?
- 17:15Speaker 1: Oh? Yeah, yeah, I do remember that night, dude. We
- 17:19Speaker 1: were just excited. We were just so excited about these
- 17:21Speaker 1: songs we'd written, and we'd get to the gigs. We're
- 17:24Speaker 1: only playing small little pubs and stuff, and we'd get
- 17:26Speaker 1: to the gigs like hours and hours and hours early.
- 17:28Speaker 1: We get there like before lunch, and we dressed the
- 17:31Speaker 1: stage with all this either red curtains or red plastic
- 17:34Speaker 1: because something. We just wanted the place to look stunning
- 17:36Speaker 1: when people walked in and just create a show. And
- 17:40Speaker 1: you know, we just put everything we had into the
- 17:42Speaker 1: lights in the PA system and giving people a good night.
- 17:46Speaker 1: So it's funny that that ethos hasn't changed for us.
- 17:49Speaker 1: We're you know, every night it's about the audience and
- 17:51Speaker 1: giving the audience the best night that we can.
- 17:54Speaker 2: Very nice. Now this one is a little bit more embarrassing.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Oh what lightia. I can understand Jenny in a crack
- 18:00Speaker 2: at high kicks, mate, but what made you a guy
- 18:02Speaker 2: to sement you could pull it off?
- 18:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I obviously need to work on my hamstring or
- 18:12Speaker 1: maybe yeah, that might have just been a badly timed photo.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I probably got right up to the original goose step
- 18:18Speaker 1: height at some stage there. But yeah, only Ginny's like
- 18:22Speaker 1: super flexible. She's like double jointed and everything, and she
- 18:25Speaker 1: can yeah, she can just point yourself in whatever direction
- 18:28Speaker 1: she likes. Pretty hard to keep up with.
- 18:30Speaker 2: I bet you guys do try and keep up with
- 18:33Speaker 2: it sometimes and falling over a.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Yeah all the time, Yeah, all the time. And you know,
- 18:41Speaker 1: I just keep right out of the way when she's
- 18:43Speaker 1: doing the cartwheels and stuff, because I can just see
- 18:45Speaker 1: me taking her out with one of my guitars or
- 18:47Speaker 1: something that has happened.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Along those lines. Bro. What what's your most embarrassing stage
- 18:55Speaker 2: moment ever? Oh?
- 18:57Speaker 1: Het, there's so many Chris, I don't know, probably playing
- 19:03Speaker 1: the thirty five thousand people with my zip down like
- 19:06Speaker 1: in my previous band. I'll bet she'd been pretty lucky
- 19:11Speaker 1: to have It hasn't been too much. But I can
- 19:14Speaker 1: tell you one story about something that happened with nail.
- 19:16Speaker 1: We were playing here in Hamilton, and it's a bit gross,
- 19:19Speaker 1: so you're gonna love this.
- 19:21Speaker 2: So we were.
- 19:23Speaker 1: Playing in Hamilton. We had the crowd barrier and stuff,
- 19:25Speaker 1: and we had a great night and we're just saying
- 19:27Speaker 1: goodbye and shaking a few hands at the front and
- 19:29Speaker 1: giving away a few guitar picks, and this girl grabs
- 19:31Speaker 1: me and she just about pulls me into the pit.
- 19:33Speaker 1: You know. I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa, settle down there,
- 19:36Speaker 1: and she's all excited and nothing. Heck, I'd better watch
- 19:39Speaker 1: my balance. And then she grabs a nail and grabs
- 19:42Speaker 1: them the same handshake, pulls them right over and he
- 19:44Speaker 1: went like tumbling right onto her face. But he had
- 19:47Speaker 1: this bad flu at the time, and he must have
- 19:49Speaker 1: exhaled out his nose as he sort of slid past
- 19:51Speaker 1: her face, and he lift this big trail of somemt
- 19:54Speaker 1: on this girl's Oh my god, there's just some fos bro.
- 20:00Speaker 1: It was just so funny. So yeah, that's the nail
- 20:03Speaker 1: trail that was. That was pretty embarrassing for her mostly
- 20:06Speaker 1: it wasn't for me.
- 20:07Speaker 3: But the moral of the story is never pull a
- 20:11Speaker 3: band member over the barricade.
- 20:12Speaker 1: YEA, please don't. Yeah, pretty covid days. I have to
- 20:18Speaker 1: say it could have had a whole city shut down,
- 20:20Speaker 1: on a country lockdown for that sort of carry on nowadays.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Very much for your time, bro, pleasure has always re
- 20:28Speaker 3: Evolution is out Friday July the Elabored Then.
- 20:30Speaker 2: It's a fucking awesome album, so get yourself a copy.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Thank you, Chris, thanks so much for your time in
- 20:36Speaker 1: and for everything you do for Middle We absolutely love
- 20:38Speaker 1: you and we need to clone you and get one
- 20:40Speaker 1: of you established right over here in New Zealand.
