Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: This is Street Fighter! Such a ridiculous look.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Street Fighter trailer finally getting it right.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, it's Gilbert K here.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Welcome back to my channel.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Hollywood has made another Street Fighter movie, and this time I have one serious question.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: Who's insuring these people?
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Because Ken is out here beating up a car.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Not another fighter, a car.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: That car woke up this morning thinking maybe an old change.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: By lunchtime, it wasn't in a tournament.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: And Cody Rhodes has Giles hair.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: This isn't a haircut, that's a piece of real estate.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Gilbert Case Show.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: I'm Gilbert, and today we're talking about the Street Fighter trailer.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: The movie arrives on October 16, 2026.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: We've got Three Yu, Ken, Chan Lee, Jason Momoa as Blanca, and a cast that looks like somebody combined a movie premiere, WrestleMania, and a music festival.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: What does this look like?
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: The Street Fighter movie fans have been waiting for?
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Or are we about to spend two hours saying the trailer was better?
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Let's get into it.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: A tournament with terrible workplace safely, if you've never played Street Fighter, you can still follow this.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: People with very different fighting styles get together and settle their problems by hitting each other.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Some throw punches, some throw kicks, some throw fireballs.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Already rules feel unfair.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: I show up with a water bottle and a positive attitude.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: The other guy shows up with the weather.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: This movie is set in 1993.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Ryu played by Andrew Koji and Ken, played by Noah Santino, have gone their separate ways.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Chan Lee played by Kalina Liang brings them into the World Warrior tournament.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Naturally, there's a dangerous conspiracy behind it.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: And I mean, of course there is.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: Nobody in these movies ever organizes an honest tournament.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: You never hear congratulations, here's your trophy, your parking is validated and will email the photos.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: It's always welcome to the tournament.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Somebody here wants to control the world.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Can we finish registration first?
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: I haven't even signed a waiver.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And what does that waiver say?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: By participating, you accept the risk of bruising, broken bones, and being launched through a wall by a man whose hair has its own postcode.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: The trailer understands assignment.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: What encouraged me about this trailer is the willingness to look ridiculous.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And I mean that as a compliment.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Street Fighter has characters with huge personalities and moves that don't belong anywhere near a normal gym.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: The trailer lets that energy show bright looks, big reactions, familiar attacks.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: It feels like the movie is willing to walk into the room and say, yes, this is what we're doing.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: If you're adapting a game where someone can throw energy out of their hands, commit.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Don't spend 40 minutes explaining the science.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I don't need a professor with a whiteboard.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: I need someone to duck.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: For me, the challenge is balance.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Give me the fun, give me the strange characters, but give me a reason to care who wins.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Because the whole movie of people posing and punching could eventually feel like watching a very angry calendar shoot.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: January, Ryu, February, Chan Li, March, someone has kicked the camera.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Ryu can and one unfortunate vehicle, Andrew Koji as Ryu, is one of the things that makes me curious.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: Ryu has that focused fighter image, the husband, the training, the serious expression.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: He looks like someone who gets up before sunrise to improve himself.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: I get up before sunrise because I drank water too late.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: We are on a different journey.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Then you have Noah Santino as Ken.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: That contrast could be fun.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Two people with shared history, different personalities, and a lot to work through.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Ideally, the relationship gives the fighting some weight because I must defeat you.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: It's harder when these people actually mean something to each other.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, it's just an argument at a fitness convention when and then there's Ken attacking the car.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: For people unfamiliar with the game, smashing a car is a famous bonus stage idea from Street Fighter 2.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: So that moment is a nod to the game.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: For fans, it's recognition.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: For everyone else, it's a reason to upgrade their insurance.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Imagine calling the company.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Was it a collision?
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: No.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Was it a vandalism?
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: Technically, can you describe the suspect?
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Blonde, athletic, possibly on fire.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: I like that kind of reference because it can work on both levels.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Fans get the memory, new viewers get the joke.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: That's how you invite people into this world.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Chan Li and the cast that needs a bigger group chat.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Alina Liang plays Chan Li, who brings Ryu and Ken into the tournament.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: I want her to have real presence in this story.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: She's such a recognizable part of Street Fighter.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Give her something to do beyond explaining why the man needs to stop arguing.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Here's the plan.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: He's the location, he's the villain.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: Please stop fighting each other for six minutes.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: We have a deadline.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: As a producer, I respect the struggle.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: You're trying to get people, two people, the same place at the same time.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Now give them supernatural punching abilities.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: Then there's Cody Rhodes as Gile.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: And yes, we need another moment for that tear.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: If you're putting Gile on screen, the look matters.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: You can't give him a sensible little side part and send him to battle.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: That would be an accountant named Greg.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Nobody is buying a ticket to see Greg do quarterly reporting unless he throws a fireball at the spreadsheet.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: Then I'm listening.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: Roman Reigns plays Akuma with him and Cody Rhodes in the cast.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Wrestling fans have something to be curious about too.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: I like the idea of performers who know how to make a physical entrance feel important.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: But I also want them to feel like their characters.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: The costume gets our attention, the performance has to keep it.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: Jason Momoa has entered his green era.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Jason Momoa plays Blanca.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Green screen, orange hair, a very unusual look.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: The man was Aquaman, now he's Blanca.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: His career is becoming a pain sample wall.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And I respect the commitment.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Blanca is exactly the kind of character who tests whether a movie believes in its own world.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Because you can't introduce him timidly.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: You can say, we've made him a little green just around the edges.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: Bring us Blanca.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Let him look strange.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Let the other characters accept that this is somebody they might have to fight today.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Imagine checking the tournament schedule.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: First opponent, a boxer.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Fine.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Second opponent, a martial artist, okay.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: Third opponent, an electrical incident with teeth.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: I'm a drawing.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Something has come up.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: It's fear.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: 50 cents play Balrog with David.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Dasmalchen plays M.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Bison.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: This is a lot of personality in one cast.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: My hope is that everyone gets a clear role.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: A big cast can be exciting, but if every character gets 30 seconds, it starts feeling like someone is crawling through the selection screen.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, I know him.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Oh, I know her.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Wait, why are the credits starting?
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: What could go wrong?
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Here's my concern.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: A trailer can give us the best moves, the funniest bits, and the strongest entrances in a couple of minutes.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: A full movie needs the stuff between those moments to work.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: I want clear fights where I can follow who's winning.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: If somebody does a great move, let me see it.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Don't cut away so quickly that I need security footage to understand what happened.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: And I want enough story to connect everything.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Who are we rooting for and what's at stake?
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: What does this fight matter?
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: And why does this fight matter?
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Keep it simple, but make it matter.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: I don't need a lecture on tournament administration.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: I came here for Hadouken.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: The humor also needs breathing room.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Some moments should be funny, some should be tense.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: If everyone makes a joke after every punch, the villain starts sounding like he's doing crown work.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Anybody here from out of town?
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Yes, Ryu.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Please continue the fight.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: My verdict on the trailer, my reaction is cautiously excited.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: The trailer gives me recognizable characters, game references, and a willingness to have fun with a strange world.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: That's enough to make me interested.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: It hasn't proved that the full story works yet, but it gives us a promising starting point.
- 8:08SPEAKER_00: And the fun fact I keep coming back is 1993 setting.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: It gives the movie a chance to lean into the era that shaped so much of Street Fighter's identity.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: An era before every disagreement became a group chat.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: And these people had to meet in person to ruin each other's day.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Now that's commitment.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Street Fighter arrives on October 16.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: For me, the question is whether this movie can turn the excitement of choosing a fighter into the excitement of following a character.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: Get that right, and the wild stuff has something to stand on.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Get it wrong, and we're left admiring Giles' hair while waiting for the next punch.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Although, to be fair, there's a lot of hair to admire.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Tell me in the comments who are you most excited to see?
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: Ryu, Ken, Chun Li, Gile, Akuma, or Blanca?
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: And does this trailer make you hopeful?
