- Patty V: Th they do have a lot to fix and to me it's a matter of he wants to fix it. He's gonna need some help with how, but she has to wanna fix it too, and he's not the only one that has to change. I'm sorry. I'm not sorry. He's that's what I think. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I'm rejoined by Patty the Newbie to cover season six of Doc Martin. This is quite a season which starts and ends in dramatic fashion. Patty, come through and welcome back to Podcast Portwenn. Patty V: Thank you. Hi everyone. Chesla Wechsler: It is good to see you as always. What did you think of season six? Patty V: Well, you know, it's interesting to hear you say it started and ended dramatically. the first episode was dramatic and okay, the wedding and it really happened. Yay. Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Patty V: And I liked her dress better than the the one she was gonna wear in the other wedding. So it like that's more important. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: I've heard that from multiple people. Patty V: But and then the whole You know, it was sweet of the village to try to give him an overnight honeymoon and of course it's not gonna work out and all the different things there. You know, that one was dramat dramatic and sometimes amusing and so I I pretty much enjoyed that episode. but as time went on, I don't know, somewhere in the middle I was like, Is anything happening? Is this I I somehow I wasn't feeling good about this season or not feeling that good. And then Then we get to episode seven. And here we go again. Martin does something Louisa doesn't like and her solution is to run away. And I'm I'm be honest getting kinda tired of that. And so I was really kinda like I really don't like this season. And then I liked episode eight. And there were a few things that happened at episode eight that that sort of said, Okay, I'm gonna get you know, I I I wouldn't have stopped watching anyway, but I was annoyed and they made me less annoyed if that makes sense. So I don't know if you want me to talk about them now or Chesla Wechsler: No, no. let's let's let's go a little bit about some of the earlier stuff, but I definitely want to revisit that because you have me fascinated as to like what what you were thinking about that. let's go back to the to the wedding. did you find, like you said, part way through the episode, was it, that things just didn't seem to be going well in that episode, in the wedding episode? Or were you talking about the season? Okay. Patty V: I'm talking about the season. I'm talking about the season. The the wedding episode I pretty much liked. And you know, of course you know that everything's not gonna go smoothly, but but I still still felt like they were mostly together. Like she got annoyed at him when I think she wanted to wait at the house 'cause she didn't have when they obviously needed some help and 'cause she didn't have the right shoes on and everything and her wedding dress and the mud and all that. And he was like, No, you have to come and it ended up being a very difficult Walk and then very difficult to be there when they got to the other house. But she she seemed more reasonable in that she knew it wasn't Martin's fault that this guy was wacky and and and so forth and the things that happened with that guy. So she she didn't immediately run away, even though the honeymoon wasn't good. So I liked, I liked that. And she assisted him when he needed it, you know, when he was. doing his doctor thing. So, yeah, I did like the first episode. I was kinda after that somewhere a I don't know, I was feeling it was too much the same or or what, but Chesla Wechsler: I there's been numerous opinions of that first episode. I thoroughly enjoyed it. but some folks they they didn't care for it. I I thought it had a lot of funny lines. I I like how they sort of were fighting for each other, but I thought it looked odd, like Martin's defending his wife and Louisa's apologize to my husband with a gun, you know, and you're like so they're sort of acting like a unit in a way. but Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That was interesting 'cause yeah. Chesla Wechsler: But he was funny with he actually makes a joke about a parrot on the shoulder or something like that. So you're thank God the man can actually tell a joke again. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Well in the the this is separate, but Ruth was watching Baby James and and having tr trouble with teething and you know, has an electrical problem and Al and Joe can't fix it. Joe the idea of Joe fixing something's pretty foreign, but yeah. And so this new character comes in and not only can fix that but can soothe the baby. And so that was Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, I like Mike Pruddy. Patty V: that was that was definitely interesting. And and I I guess I I kinda liked the second episode when it becomes clear that was his name Mike? The Yeah. And that he has O C D you know, has to line up the blocks and and and and everything comes clear he has O C D and all of a Martin's like, Yeah, I like this guy and Louisa's like, we don't know this guy. And the thing Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Yes. Patty V: is, they probably knew as much or more about him than they did the other person that they that she had hired. She didn't really know her either, but anyway, I just I found that that interesting Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I like it. There was some there was some good it had to do with tidy. I'm gonna look at my notes for a second here. Or is it? Yeah, t tidy house, tidy mind. You know, Patty V: tidying up, yeah. tidying I was tidy mine. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: it was tidy and then Martin's like Yes and then he whacks his head as he's walking through it. It's kinda like he's Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: forced to agree. He doesn't really agree and then he he kinda Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: gets punished anyway. Patty V: The other thing in that episode, this has nothing to do with OCD, it's just something I noticed. when they showed Louisa in her school and they're singing a song and this would well, maybe it would happen now, I don't think so though, but it would not happen in American public school. They're singing a song and it's really like a hymn 'cause all things bright Chesla Wechsler: yes. Patty V: and beautiful, all things, you know, great and small, the Lord God made them all. And and without my even saying anything, you know, I noticed it and was writing it down when my husband said, Whoa, they can't say that you know. Yeah, Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. But it is, you know, the the Church of England is Patty V: the separation of church and state is a little different in England than in the US. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yeah. in in the s the first episode with the honeymoon, i I I laughed at how Martin was trying to be so brave and it ended up, you know, being the horse. this is your final warning. And do you remember that part when they're in the w the wood, not the forest? Yeah. Patty V: Yeah, Chesla Wechsler: And I don't know if you ever now hopefully you have not, because you were a an unspoiled Best Medicine person last season. my little segue in between the unspoiled and the spoiled, I always said, This is your final warning and I I basically took it from that episode as a little inside joke. I I don't know if anybody ever got it, but Patty V: Interesting. Interesting. Chesla Wechsler: that's why I would say it. And then the ending of that where it's you know, it's not their blood and Pen Penhale's basically saying, you know, we can make these things we can make these things disappear basically. Trying to cover for the doc. Patty V: actually I I can't even really explain this, but Joe Penhale grew on me in this season because there was just the comic relief and he is a good person. He he tries so hard and he just can't quite do it. And I don't know, I just found him more amusing, and he really does try to help and so I appreciate that even if he is l more than a little inept. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I I you know, any time you see something on a screen, you know it's a combination of of the writing and the directing and the acting and everything and I just felt like, you know, all of that comes together for everybody, basically, in Doc Martin. You know, I I just think that the show is produced so well and so Penhale Patty V: Well Chesla Wechsler: just has he has great lines and John Marquez delivers his lines really well and Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: and they've really hit a character that is Patty V: Endearing somehow. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: endearing and believably bumbling, sort of. Patty V: But I didn't feel that way in the beginning. When he f the first season that he was on, I was kinda like, you know, I I didn't find him as believable or as endearing. And so I don't know if the writing changed or I just got used to him or what, but I definitely did enjoy him a little more. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And we were missing Mark. Patty V: Yeah, but I guess less so now. I don't know. Out of sight, out of mind? I'm not Chesla Wechsler: Ha ha Patty V: sure. But yeah. Maybe that was why. Maybe I didn't give him a chance the first ep episode, that Mark wasn't there. 'Cause I kept thinking, Okay, he's gonna come back for this wedding you know, even if the wedding doesn't happen, he's gonna come back and be at the wedding and then when he wasn't I was like, Come on Mark would have come. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that's right. If he could have, he would have been there, you know. So Patty V: Yeah. So Chesla Wechsler: all right, so what else have we got going on? the fact that he's already off, like, fixing his clocks is not a good sign. Patty V: The fact that he's already off working Chesla Wechsler: Martin's off, you know, working on his clocks. Patty V: on clocks for for too many hours, yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: Yeah. Well and that became significant later in the season, when the mother takes the clock away and you know that clock means a lot to Martin, so that was it. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And you you just get a sense that things are getting too people y for him, you know? I mean it it's his inner sanctum has been kind of Patty V: And he has to get away and Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: violated, right? Patty V: Yeah. there yeah, there was the episode where they went upstairs and were talking on the baby monitor and they were insulting the the the people that see that one You know, she was trying to get him to be more social. So at least in this case, she said what she wanted him to do and he's like, okay, I'm supposed to do that. So he immediately invited people that it turns out she doesn't like, and didn't want that's not who she wanted him to be sociable with. But how is he supposed to know that? He was really Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: j just trying to do what she just told him two minutes ago. So he invites them over for dinner and of course it doesn't go well and you know, the people hear it and get insulted, which yeah, so but that was an example of him trying, you know? So Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. He does try to adjust, you know. He he really does try. but the two of Patty V: Yeah. So Chesla Wechsler: them are, you know, still like this in communication. Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: But they haven't worked to get to know each other that much yet. Patty V: Well, I I mean, my feeling is that he really loves her. And I think he loves her pretty much as she is. I'm less sure if she loves him as he is. I think and that's what bugs me about a lot of this season is that she just expects him to change instantly And we know why he is the way he is. We s we've seen how his, you know, what his upbringing was like. And so if she really loved him, could she be a little more patient with his lack of understanding of social cues? could she I I don't think she communicates that well either. She expects him to just know Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Patty V: things and do and do it quote right. And says, Okay, you're not, so I'm gonna leave, a is what I feel like. And I'm hoping that it's not that way. Maybe it is, I don't wanna look at your face and can't be be told. But you know, this is season six. Chesla Wechsler: I'm just trying to Patty V: There's four more seasons, right? is she gonna threaten to leave at the end of every season? And I don't know. It just seems like there should be some growth on both their parts, and maybe even more so on hers. I don't know. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I I I Patty V: Because she's supposed to be the one that already is socially aware. So Chesla Wechsler: Right. And and if you look at season two, when she's you know, the two of them are drunk and she's just saying, You're just what you are, you're a stick of rock, you're Martin Ell-, you know, Patty V: Yes, yes. Chesla Wechsler: just what it says on the tin and it's like, That's that's right. So this is that's Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: the tin, that's what you're getting if you get into this. Yeah. Yeah. Patty V: And do you love that or not, you know, is kinda that's that's that's where I am. So yes, I I couldn't be married to a guy like him. He would have to change, but I still feel like Yeah, Chesla Wechsler: Get that done before you get married. Patty V: yeah, yeah. So anyway. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And also I she you know, Michael Pruddy with his O C D, I find that Louisa in this season, she does not like Michael. I mean, she does not like his strangeness and she's afraid that James Henry will get his strangeness too, and she already thinks he has enough strangeness, right, from Martin. And you just get the Patty V: Not contagious, right? Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: sense that she doesn't even want her son to grow up to be like his father. Patty V: Yeah. And Chesla Wechsler: Although there's a lot admirable about Martin that she loves, right? Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So that yeah, that was a little tough for me in that episode. But and then there was a good line in the next episode. I think it was from Joe Penhale where they found a man on the beach that was unconscious and He said, I think he's got hype hypothermia or something and Martin says, Well stop thinking. That Chesla Wechsler: Ha ha ha ha ha. Patty V: one seemed like a reasonable judgment that it would be hypothermia, but anyway, Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, Ruth gets a stalker. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah, and and I I did guess why he was, you know, stalking her. that he was from 'cause she had said she worked with the criminally insane and so Chesla Wechsler: Right. Patty V: I thought, okay, this is one of her this is not an ex boyfriend, this is a ex patient. Chesla Wechsler: wrote down this I just remember when Martin and Ruth are eating dinner or eating lunch for her birthday, and she says something like, I think I might have a stalker and Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: he comes back with the best line. Almost like that's wishful Patty V: I did not write that one. Chesla Wechsler: thinking or something like that. I that in my notes. Patty V: I did not write that down, but that does s that's pretty cool. Chesla Wechsler: Let let Patty V: Episode three. So there was something else in that episode that that man called called her Doctor Ruth. And I Chesla Wechsler: yeah. Patty V: was curious if in now in a in the United States that would be, an inside joke because there's Chesla Wechsler: Ruth Vestheimer. Patty V: a very famous T V or radio you know, Doctor Ruth. And so I don't know if it was a nod to that Doctor Ruth or if it's just a coincidence. And she said, Doctor Ellingham, please. You know, like you're not supposed to call me by my first name. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I am not doctor Ruth Westheimer. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. totally different topic in that same episode. There was something that that, you know, kinda bothered me. Louisa made a choice that I didn't think was right. there's a kid, I think her name is Becky, that wrote in the school newspaper that Bert's chicken gave her food poisoning and it turned out it wasn't that. And Louisa did not make her write a retraction. And you know, I I disagree with that. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: The the kid made a leap she shouldn't have made and the doctor didn't say that at all. She just wanted to be true, wanted it to it thought it would be a good story, wrote it down and it wasn't true. And especially, you know, with journalism in America these days, that really bothered me. Truth matters Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: to me. And so I I don't know if I would have felt as strongly in two thousand twelve or whenever this was being filmed. But boy, right now, I I just think that's wrong and you know, it hurt his business. And there there were ramifications. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: So she should have Chesla Wechsler: I I Patty V: apologized. Chesla Wechsler: I th I think she should have made her do something because not only did she Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: write something that wasn't true, but she was told to not distribute the newspaper until it had been approved by Louisa and she did that. So she did multiple things wrong. Patty V: Right, right. Chesla Wechsler: There should have been some accounting, you know some accountability for it. And sh the kid Patty V: Yeah. And you I I don't think you can just say, Well, she's ten. No. So so she needs to learn at ten so she doesn't do it when she's eleven or twenty one or thirty one. That's what I think, but yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And even if it wasn't the kid having to do it, there should have been something done from the school. Even if it's 'cause, the kid is ten, maybe you don't have the kid write a retraction, but Patty V: Yeah, in America somebody probably would have sued over that, you know. And and that might be one case where I would support it, but 'cause that Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. 'Cause we're so litigious. Yeah. Patty V: you know, n all they had to do was say, S Sorry, I miss you know, whatever. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: the next episode, I guess there were some funny things in there, but this is where I'm starting to feel like did enough happen or do I really am I really enjoying this as much as I had the prior season. I d I do think on balance I enjoyed season five more than season six, but there were the ladies that wanted yeah, they felt like they had a tattoo DNRs on themselves instead of just filling out f forms. I don't know. so that was that was kinda weird. That was something I never would have guessed, that Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: that what was their ailment or whatever. And Martin took James to a play group and of course Martin's not the best match for play group. so Chesla Wechsler: Why did she make him go to that? I mean, that is just asking to torture both James and Martin. Patty V: Well, not so much James but the people that run the that are in the playgroup. But Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, true. Patty V: see that that is my thing with Louisa in this season is that she keeps putting him in situations that are gonna be difficult for him and not and just assuming that he should do it because, we're both his parents and not even a lot of Okay, here's what they do in playgroup. You'll be expected to do this, you'll be expected to do that. Do you think that that you can handle it? and there's there's ways to make it easier. Like maybe he maybe it'd be okay if he got there a little late and didn't have to do a half hour of it. Maybe he could stand 20 minutes of it of it instead of you know, there's different things. And maybe if he knew a little more ahead of time, he could be a little more prepared for it, so it wouldn't be a surprise and a big deal, and he he'd know okay, they're gonna Ask me to do something I don't really want to do, but I can get through it 'cause it's only ten minutes or whatever. I I just felt like she just said, you're a dad, go to play group. And that seems like do you really love Martin? There didn't there doesn't seem to be a lot of compromise on her part. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. I it th it did seem like she was setting up to fail in that. I just don't know why she s sent him to that. He just Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: was it's so obviously poor match for him. Patty V: Yeah, yeah. And so I almost felt the where I blame it on the show, it's kind of the opposite of what you said before about the different the writers and the actors and everything coming together. I felt like that was stuck in there just to be a gag 'cause we knew it was gonna be funny 'cause we knew he wasn't gonna fit. And it was you know, it was pretty predictable. And Doc Martin, I have higher standards for it. It should be not as predictable. So Chesla Wechsler: That's funny. Well, it could have been foreshadowing. I I didn't even think of this 'til we're talking about it now. But it could have foreshadowed sports day. Patty V: Yes, it could and that's that was my whole thing, but you know, maybe w wait till 'cause that was the end of the season, so talk more Chesla Wechsler: Right, yes, yeah. Patty V: about that in a in a minute, but so I was only like so so on that, whole episode. And then the next one, Mrs. Tishell comes back and Did she learn anything? Was she any better? Is she on her medication? She still seemed mean and to be honest, if it were me, I'd be worried that that particular person the way she was was gonna steal my baby again, 'cause she well, I don't know if she maybe not delusional, but she was really rude to this other person who was just doing her job. And she and again, I I don't know. I I wasn't sure, were we supposed to believe that she should have been released? Or did they just do that 'cause it would be funny 'cause she would be so mean and it wouldn't be funny if they if if she, had, you know, improved more. I don't know. But I felt that that whole thing was kind of a turn off to me that she was Chesla Wechsler: Okay. I just thought she was she was protecting her turf. It's like the only thing she has left, right? She's you know, we don't see Clive, Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: right? So and Clive, of course the last thing we know of Clive is he's saying, Hey, you know, Dr. Ellingham, is there something I should know about? right, is my wife cheating on me? Patty V: Yeah. So where did he go? Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Exactly. So like we don't see Clive, we don't see Sally for the first four or five episodes and you're like thinking, okay, maybe Mrs. Tishell's gone and Patty V: Maybe she's not coming back. Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: she could be because you know, maybe that was her riding off into the sunset as a as an actress or something. but when she comes back you think, okay, she she may not have her husband, we don't know. we don't Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: hear anything about him. She really w needs her license back. Like the only thing she really has left is her shop. Patty V: But one of the things that I couldn't quite figure out 'cause she eventually she gets it back and I was like, But she's not ready. Why did they give that back to her? And but did the woman Jenny, was she did she have any say? in that 'cause or it's just this b board that's off camera that decides something. And, you know, to me, if things were fair, that board should be interviewing Jenny and saying, What was it like? What do you think? And it doesn't seem like any of that happened. So, I don't know. I would have thought that she would be trying to impress Jenny to prove, hey, I'm fine. You don't and instead she was just mean and, that was Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah, she certainly was opinionated. I'm not sure if I would I can't remember if I w if I thought she was really mean or I I know she was Patty V: I wrote down very jealous and I did I did write down the word mean, so yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Okay. 'Cause she was definitely opinionated. I know wasn't Jenny trying to do some like holistic stuff and Mrs. Tishell was like, n none of that and I think Jennifer Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: like announced what medicine the person was getting to the whole shop and Mrs. Tishell thought that that vi violated privacy, you know, so she was yeah. Patty V: Which probably it does, but just the manner in which she dealt with her I didn't think was was that nice. No. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. It wasn't kind, that's for sure. Patty V: No. And it and it if I at the time I thought that she had some say in whether Mrs. Tishell got her license back and could, be on her own and I thought that not it was stupid to be mean to this woman, but I guess in the end it didn't matter 'cause she wasn't passed, but Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And she she did Mrs. Tishell did seem genuinely sort of sorrowful with Louisa when the first time the two of them bump into each other, you know, she's kind of like Patty V: Sort of. Yeah, she wasn't Yeah, Chesla Wechsler: Treading lightly. Patty V: she was yeah. But I don't know. I if I were Louisa, I I would not I would not have blamed Louisa at all for not trusting her and not think Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: not being extra protective of her son. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Patty V: because she didn't seem totally reformed and like i you could be positive it would never happen again. And in the end it seems like she wasn't taking her medicine that she should have been taking. Chesla Wechsler: right, because she ended up with it was didn't she have like an aphib or something or angina? Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. something. Chesla Wechsler: She w but she went off her cholesterol med, I thought. she dropped her cholesterol meds 'cause sh she didn't want to be on any medicine. She was afraid of it happening again. Sh Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: so she actually stopped all of her own medicines rather than taking something new, right? Patty V: Yeah. So anyway, it just seemed like i this is a pharmacist and she's really making not good decisions with drugs, so you know yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Martin seemed to be, he seemed to think she was fine, right? Like she's 'cause he was trying to reassure Louisa that Patty V: Well, he he he yeah, he basically said they wouldn't have released her. We tr it was kinda like trust the process seemed Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Patty V: to be his his recommendation. And Chesla Wechsler: Right. Patty V: now to be fair, he didn't see the things we saw. He didn't see the way she acted, you know, in fr although Martin might not care because he wouldn't go for holistic stuff either. So maybe he would Chesla Wechsler: Right. Patty V: think it was okay to I mean Martin sometimes is mean or but he doesn't even know he's being mean. I think Mrs. Tischell knew she was being mean Yeah, so yeah, intent intent matters to me. So Chesla Wechsler: it's the intent. The intent is important. It does. I agree. I agree. Yeah. And so Martin, we Patty V: And Chesla Wechsler: see him this whole season withdrawing. Right? And I Patty V: Yes, and you don't quite know why. And then and then it seemed like I mean there was one point where he gave Louisa not Louisa, Morwenna a sample to be analyzed and she's but Doc, this has your name on it. Yes. And so Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: he had done that. And then in the last episode, she or somebody walks in on him and he's doing an EKG. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: So You're kinda like, what's going on here? And I was wondering, okay, is Louisa not gonna go because he's gonna be sick or he's gonna have something? And then I f did they say what any of that was, or is that hanging over for the next season? Chesla Wechsler: Well, if you recall when Martin is sitting with Ruth and Yeah. Patty V: Yes, and she said it's not physical. It's not and and so I didn't know if it was related to all of that and other stuff or yeah, I I wasn't sure. Chesla Wechsler: He yeah, he's not eating like he's not eating, he's not sleeping, he's losing weight, and he's thinking it must be something medically wrong with himself. Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: He's never looking at the fact that he really is psychologically, in essence, depressed. Patty V: Yeah, he has yeah, he has a lot of unresolved issues there that he needs to needs to take care of. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: And Yeah. So I I was a little unsure of how she would know all of that. I mean, obviously She knows that he has the mental issues, but she wouldn't really know that he didn't also have something physically wrong. So Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Patty V: that that seemed like a bit of a leap to me, but apparently accurate. Chesla Wechsler: I think she just, you know, as a psychologist or psychiatrist, she's probably been hi been observing him. Yeah. Yeah, so she's a she's a physician first and then a psychiatrist second Patty V: Well she's a psychiatrist, so she would have more training with that. Yeah. Yes. Yes. Chesla Wechsler: and she's been observing him this whole time. And Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: observing the interactions between him and his Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: wife and the child and the child minder, you know, the the whole issues with Mike Putty and all, so Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: And then Margaret shows up. Aye, that's what you need. Patty V: Yeah. Except for the fact that she's a famous actress. You you're like get her out of there. Okay. Sorry Claire Bloom. Bye. Chesla Wechsler: She has she's just so good. I mean she she just makes you hate her so well. Patty V: Yes. Yes, yes. And okay, there again I got I was a little confused. Did she really reconcile with Martin's dad before he died? Or was that part made up too? 'Cause almost everything she told him was made up. So I didn't know. Yeah. So Chesla Wechsler: I think everything was made up. Yeah. Patty V: and why would him dying make her not have enough money? That's what I couldn't because they had already separated. Chesla Wechsler: I don't know. I have to think. Patty V: And so I couldn't figure out I thought she was going off riding off in the sunset with somebody else. And Chesla Wechsler: She might have been getting some of his, like whatever his retirement money is that may have ended Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: with his death. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah, I don't know how that works in England, but Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: Yeah. And she acts like she wants to get closer to him and and she was sorry for some of the stuff and then and she I wouldn't say she me fooled, but I thought there might have been something there. And so, man, in that last episode, man, she was really she was really awful. All she wanted was money. And Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And then Chesla Wechsler: I just need money, Martin. Yeah. Yeah. Three hundred thousand? Two hundred thousand? And I I just thought the the writing there was great with Patty V: Well, I I liked episode eight and that's one of the reasons there there's a whole bunch of reasons why, but I'm trying to see what else happened before there that this wasn't really Chesla Wechsler: Was it was it seven or Patty V: on the screen very much, but there was a sand castle that Mike made when he was on the beach with I Whoa, what a you know, there's an advantage of having this guy as a babysitter. Look at that sandcastle. Yeah, yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Pretty impressive, yeah. I I thought Michael was a great babysitter. I mean he really was on top of everything and he seemed to care about James and really love the little Patty V: Absolutely. Chesla Wechsler: boy. He was great. Patty V: Yeah, and then so I I kept wondering what's gonna happen here because he he really is a good babysitter and then you know, he's AWOL, okay. That was Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. And and it was funny about Morwenna when she tries to date him, 'cause you know, he's a he's a handsome guy. And he's just Patty V: Yeah, yeah. Chesla Wechsler: he's just boring. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. And and the s sort of maybe developing thing with Morwenna and Al I I did kinda like that. That I'm I'm okay with that. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: And I liked how one time Ruth said something about well, if you're in a relations we're not in a relationship. my mistake. And you the way she said it, it was like you know she doesn't think it's mistake, but Chesla Wechsler: Well and and she's seeing something that they're not seeing yet. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. and I really Ruth grew on me some in this well, I ne I never disliked her, but but I'm really coming to appreciate her more in in this this season. Chesla Wechsler: I also think that that's a you miss Aunt Joan too. It's like, okay, we lost Auntie Joan. We really loved Auntie Joan, so you kinda feel like Ruth's the substitute for Auntie Joan and y you can't just Patty V: Well Chesla Wechsler: take her on face value in season five. Patty V: Yeah. Well and and you know, they can't have the character be exactly the same. And Aunt J Joan was a little more com obviously compassionate. And Ruth is a little bit more like Martin. And so but more and more of her compassion or kindness or whatever is coming through in this episode and that the whole thing where she's gonna business partner with Al, that's pretty nice. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: And but I think she really does see something in Al. And I th you know the whole conversation about how he's gotta do something he wants to do for himself, that was pretty nice. I that Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Patty V: the Al Bert thing I was really annoyed with Bert and I'm tired of him, you know, taking advantage of his son and just assuming he'll be there for whatever crazy scrape that Bert, has dreamt up that Al had nothing to do with and why should Al constantly bail him out? kinda thing. So that was another reason I was like not so hip I'm tired of this. New plot, please, and Chesla Wechsler: I was glad that Bert Bert got a love interest. I thought that was nice. Patty V: Yes and no. I thought it was a little bit fast but you know Chesla Wechsler: I think they had a history. Patty V: No, he knew her before, but still, they haven't been back that long or y did you change in forty years and but I kinda thought she could do better. 'Cause I think she's nice. I like I like her, but we'll see. and he did try and make it up to Al at the end, but I felt like okay, it's a start, but you're not you're not done here, Bert. You got more to make up for, you know. I'll let's Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. It's it Patty V: see continued good behavior, not just this one apology. So okay, so now we get to the episode where she's Louisa asks Martin to well, it's not like she asked, it's like as she's walking out the door, you're coming today for the awards, right? And he she may or Chesla Wechsler: It was prearranged. Patty V: may not have told him and he forgot or whatever, so if he she did tell him and he forgot, that's that's one thing. But you can't just tell somebody like Martin, just a reminder She should have had a big long conversation about, okay, here's how I envision it. Do you think you can do this? And 'cause again, that was a she expected him to give a speech. She expected him to hand out awards, The the speech was really bad because sh like about what? you just it she just calls him up and says he's gonna say a few words to ki and and It's actually if if it was a talk about, you know, nutrition or or good hygiene or something that has to do with being a doctor, then he might not need as much prep work. But for this, that's her turf, not his. And so Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: what is he supposed to say? And so I just felt that the that was completely unfair of her to throw him into that environment without a lot of prep and even asking, Can you do this? Is this okay? I would really like you to do this. And maybe there could have been some negotiation, like, well, I'll come and ha I don't really want to give the speech, but I will come and I'll come and watch. I'll I'll help you hand out the awards or whatever. But there could have been some some middle ground or negotiation, but I don't think she had any appreciation for how hard that would be for somebody like him. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: well that really, really bothered me and okay and I did like when Ruth in the next episode is talking with Martin and this is after you know Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, before you move on though, th the whole sports day thing with what she expects and what she doesn't, I had the impression that he did know he was supposed to give out the prizes. That Patty V: Right. Chesla Wechsler: was like prearranged. Yeah, and Patty V: And that's very different from giving a speech. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: that would have been okay to be like and today is the day, 'cause, you know, as far as we know, they talked about it, right? But but to d Patty V: Right. Seemed like it. Chesla Wechsler: but to drop the speech on him I thought was completely unfair and she should have been able to foresee that it would be a disaster. Because she's heard him on the radio, right? When he she's interviewed for pod you know, whatever. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: R Radio Portwenn. I've modeled Podcast Portwenn off of Radio Portwenn, obviously. Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: but you know, he he's not one who's just gonna speak off the cuff, even under direct questioning. Like why would Patty V: Right. Chesla Wechsler: you think he's just gonna be able to give a childhood athletics is good speech? Patty V: And he doesn't yeah, that that's quite a leap for that to be in a doctor. I mean, I Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Patty V: guess he could say exercise is important, but which is did he even say that I think he might have said one line like that, but Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, but Patty V: it it is If she Chesla Wechsler: But I Patty V: wanted him to give that speech, she should have told him a lot more about, you know, here's what I think you should say, or not not write it for him, but just here's some topics I think maybe you could say. Do you think you could do that? Or, you know, help him. She sh it it would almost be like the newspaper. You would think she'd want to proofread it. To make sure it was because he's not a teacher. He might Chesla Wechsler: Right. Yeah, true, true. Yeah. Patty V: not you know, realize what's kid appropriate. And that might Chesla Wechsler: Right. Patty V: even be okay for a neuro neurotypical. Neurotypical person, you Chesla Wechsler: Divergent? Typical? Patty V: know. and so I just felt like that was that was totally unfair and I was, you know, I'm a little tired of him. It's not always f I feel like there should be some growth. And I didn't see much growth in that season. Chesla Wechsler: Well, I thought he during that s that thing, he became a real jerk. I mean, it's like he he Patty V: He did, but it spiraled downward, but And I don't know. I I maybe this is unfair, but I have more sympathy for him than I do for her here because she knows he's that way. And yes, he's capable of improving and changing, but he's gonna need some help to do it. It was like she just threw him into an environment and expect him to instantly be different. Why? Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, yeah. Patty V: You know? And so that's why in the next episode, when Aunt Ruth said, Martin, you're gonna have to change, I was like, Finally. Yay. And and sh the way she said it was good. It was not, I don't know, it felt like it was compassionate but realistic, if that makes sense. Cause she said, Do you want Louisa? Is that is it Louisa important to you? Keeping Louisa important to you? Okay, you're gonna have to change. You can't and and I think in with hindsight, he sort of realized it. And he needs help figuring out how to do that. And yes, he should be in therapy. And not with Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: not with Aunt Ruth, but with somebody else. But and and Louisa even suggested that before, but So maybe some of that's on him 'cause he didn't do it. but that was more for the blood thing than for how to live as a human being. I don't know. But Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Patty V: yeah, so Yeah I didn't like that Chesla Wechsler: But but we do see like you know Patty V: whole that whole situation, I'm tired of her throwing him in situations that you know he's gonna fail and then saying, I'm gonna leave because I'm not happy. Well, you know. So Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Give some help. I thought that it was interesting if we is it in season must be in season five, because Ruth joins in season five. And she says like people don't change in season five, right? had this discussion. Yeah. But we had the and Patty V: I know, which was interesting. when she said that I was like, Whoa, then this show's over because Chesla Wechsler: we had the discussion last time, which was was she basically commenting really on Martin, that she didn't see him being capable of change, but yet in this season you see she recognizes that he's probably got the motivation to want to change. Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: And she sees things in him that indicates that he's capable of it. Patty V: Yeah. Well, just Chesla Wechsler: So he's obviously yeah. Patty V: when he talked to Mike about his options from, you know, AWOL and Mike's like, I can't go back, I can't go back, I can't I I can't be in the ar you know, 'cause he he originally thought the army would be a good match for him because there's so many rules, and then found out, you know, it wasn't a match and was just like terrified of going back. And I thought Martin was really good at presenting it As a choice rather than you're being forced to. And does it make a difference to you if you say, I choose to try to, you know, get therapy and and deal with this, rather than they're making me? Chesla Wechsler: Right. Patty V: And the way he explained it seems very compassionate, very insightful, Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Patty V: and you know, hey, he's not a psychologist, he's not a psychiatrist, and yet this sounds like good advice. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Patty V: So Yeah, when you when you see stuff like that you n it it seems like he is capable and yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Now was that the was that the scene where he's saying if if you could learn how to control your symptoms would you want to do that? Is that Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: yeah, yeah. Patty V: Well, when he i because that was a way to go back because the he said the the army will pay for your therapy. If you go back with this diagnosis, then then you need help for that thing. You won't just get thrown in jail or thrown back into whatever you had to do before or whatever. And it just seemed Chesla Wechsler: Right. Yeah. Patty V: like a reasonable solution. But the way he He didn't like yell at him. Like like w sometimes with other patients, if they don't want to do what they have to do for whatever their illnesses are, he's just like, Well, that that's it, that's it, you know, he he was just I felt like so much more compassionate with Mike. And maybe 'cause he understood him because he's because Mike's thing is O C D, he was able to be more compassionate. It was so close to him, you know, things he Chesla Wechsler: And he'd also gotten to know him more. I mean, this was the guy who was taking care of his son, too. Patty V: Yes. And he d and he knew that he took good care of his son. And Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Patty V: so yeah, so yeah, that's where in that episode with her putting Martin into a situation that wasn't good and of course it became a disaster, but then you saw him with the in a situation that you would think he might not be good at and he was, says there's hope kind of thing. and then that my humor for this one and and okay, maybe he's not completely inept, Joe was really torn in this episode because like Al was kinda like, I like Mike, I'm gonna I think he's a good guy, I'm gonna help him by diverting these police officers and letting him get away. And Joe was kinda like, I can't do that. I have to uphold the law, which he does, and and so gotta admire him for that. but at one point he put a boot on the soldier's car and was like, Okay, he's not so stupid after all. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yep. But I also thought I thought Joe wasn't Joe also going to divert them so that they would that they wouldn't find Mike? Patty V: Well, at b in the beginning I don't think he divert when he he went to the place that Al said that Mike was, but he wasn't there. I don't think I don't I didn't think Joe knew he wasn't there. He was following up he said he was trying to get there before the soldiers did to kinda Chesla Wechsler: Right. Patty V: help him, but he wasn't gonna yeah, to warn him or whatever. And then he got stuck on the crane and yeah, so he Chesla Wechsler: Yes, yes. But I I thought Joe was actually gonna give these guys like a a back route to to delay them so that he could get to Mike first. Wasn't it Joe? Patty V: Well, I I felt like he kn he knew a shortcut or something. So he did get there first. He just, you know even Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Patty V: that he couldn't he couldn't quite you know, get it, but Chesla Wechsler: Yep. And then but then he of course he is there to arrest Mike when Mike shows Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: up at his apartment, but he wants to arrest him instead of the army guys. And I I presume I don't think it I agree. I agree, Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. I don't think that was for his own glory. I think he was trying to help Mike. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: yes. Patty V: Yeah. So but at the end of that episode when L Louisa said, Well, I I'm I'm gonna go to Spain and take the baby and I I was kinda like, Well wait a minute, can she do that? that that Chesla Wechsler: I'll tell you, when she gets hit by the car, Chris and I almost fell off the couch. We did not see that coming. Yeah. Patty V: No, I didn't see that coming either. although, you know that's why you're supposed to look before you cross the street, but Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: Yeah, that was totally her fault. It wasn't the driver's fault at all. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Patty V: and Martin didn't seem neither one of seemed to blame the driver either. That Chesla Wechsler: Mm-mm. Patty V: that driver was just in it for two seconds, so yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Patty V: But before the the accident, when she tells him she's gonna go to Spain and she said, But Mar I'm not happy. And you're not happy either. And he said, Why does everybody have to be happy all the time? Chesla Wechsler: Yes, yes, He has survived without happiness. Patty V: But she does bring it's like he doesn't recognize she does bring him happiness. Like being with her does bring him a a level of happiness. so anyway. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: But he might call it contentment, you know, like he might not have a word for it. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. But he just knows Chesla Wechsler: Or maybe he has a Patty V: that when she isn't there, he's much, much worse. So yeah. So anyway, Chesla Wechsler: That's right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And there's also a a quote somewhere through there I remember about it might have been from his mom just saying that Martin just cried himself to sleep. Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Like we did things differently back then and and he would just but you know, you you know that she would just left him. It wasn't like, let's follow Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: some advice. This was we're just not gonna deal with this child. Patty V: Yeah. but when he was let's see, it was the I think Martin had this conversation with Aunt Ruth after he knew that Louisa was leaving. 'Cause she didn't leave that night, she was the next day she was gonna leave. And so she was still there and the accident hadn't happened yet. And he's having this conversation with Aunt Ruth, and that's when she's telling him, you know, you're gonna have to change. But I thought that one of the things she said was insightful and maybe he would learn from that she thought that he was pushing away everything in that he thought he didn't deserve Louisa. So he w that's what was keeping him from trying to be happy or trying to that he was like almost on purpose doing bad things because he didn't think he deserved her so he was like letting her letting her go. even though he didn't really want her to go. Chesla Wechsler: Right. And it's it really is like the season three wedding, which was this she's I can't make her happy. Like I I and I don't deserve to be happy, right? And Patty V: Yes. Yes. So even though he supposedly got over that, he was going back to that, it seemed like. And so but I felt like there was a little bit Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. And he he Patty V: more of a Eureka moment when Aunt Ruth was saying it this time that yeah. So Chesla Wechsler: Sure. Yeah. And his blood phobia, which had been under control, comes back. Yeah. Patty V: had come back, yes. Yes. And I was I still wasn't quite sure I figured out 'cause that happened before his mom came back. And like why did I d do you feel like they answered that in this season? Why that why that happened? Chesla Wechsler: I mean, hi he got better when he was going to go back to London and Louisa wasn't gonna be part of his life, right? So now Patty V: Yes, well she that's another thing that Aunt Ruth said was that you really miss being a surgeon, don't you? And he admitted he did. And so so maybe the blood phobia came back because he couldn't be a surgeon? I don't know. I w I wasn't quite sure I understood all that. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: And the blood flow yeah, the blood phobia prevents him from being a surgeon. Alright? But I just think that you know, it's it's a the overall I don't know. Well let's think let's think this through, okay, so He's got the blood phobia, he comes to Portwenn, he falls in love with Louisa. He he doesn't defeat the blood phobia until but he he can he can defeat it when it's a crisis. So like he manages to do Peter Cronk surgery, he manages to do the surgery after the wedding, but at that point he's kind of when she had left his life and he worked on the blood phobia and was largely better, She wasn't his wife. Patty V: Well, I mean, did you feel in was it season three or four, whenever it was he was gonna go to London he was gonna leave Portwenn and go to London, Did you feel like were you a hundred percent convinced he was over the blood phobia? I wasn't. Chesla Wechsler: No, no. Patty V: because I know things like that, you know, can kinda come and go. And what if he's under stress? Like if everything's going well, maybe he can do it. But if somebody yells at him at that morning and then he has to walk into surgery, can he do it? You know, I Chesla Wechsler: Right. Patty V: I wasn't convinced that he was really ready. So Chesla Wechsler: Mm mm. No. Patty V: I'm not shocked that it would come back. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: But Anyway, Chesla Wechsler: But I think she's upset with him because she he doesn't talk to her about it. Patty V: That she has a point and I think she's right 'cause she she that I felt like she was more compassionate. That was in an episode before the she sent him to I think that might have been after she sent him to the playgroup, but before she sent him to Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: talk to the people about sports. and she she Chesla Wechsler: She does try to reach out to him, like she brings him Patty V: didn't she didn't know that it was back and then when she found out she's like, Why didn't you tell me? And he's like, Why would I tell you? And she said, Because I'm your wife. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: And so that I thought was good and I gave Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: her lots of points for that. But she needs to do that more because then she wasn't I thought that she wasn't mad at him. She was try to help and saying, you know, you can lean on me. That's Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: very different from I'm your wife, you should tell me, you know. It Chesla Wechsler: Right. Patty V: wasn't like that. It was more like, hey, you can share this with me and and and I'll be sympathetic and I'll try to help you. And she suggested that, maybe he could explore that in therapy, which is exactly the right thing, I think. And he didn't I'm trying to remember, he didn't say no I won't, but he didn't say yes, I wa he yeah, I th think he was kind of noncommittal about it, but Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Well I mean that was I think that was when I mean she doesn't she bring him breakfast and he can't even eat the breakfast and she wants to go away for a weekend and he doesn't Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: want to go it's like he's just really, really not coping. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. And that I was a little confused Chesla Wechsler: And she tries yeah, she tries to reach out, but Patty V: about that. Like what is what is it that is causing that at this point? And, you know, maybe Aunt Ruth is right that it was because and he doesn't even know it, I think, that that he really did want to be a surgeon and he misses that. Chesla Wechsler: I I also thought it was just it's a huge adjustment for him to go from being a bachelor, you know, set in his own ways, living in his own place, very particular about Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: how things get done, and next thing you know, h Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: his house is covered with toys, everything is squeaky Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: or some stupid child music and he's got Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: all these things going on and he he is Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: not coping. Patty V: Yeah. He doesn't act though like it's not his job to help take care of the kid. He but but maybe he doesn't realize that that means squeaky toys are, not necessarily go to bed when you think he should go to bed or whatever. what else I write down here? I did laugh at the the party they were having and Joe was he was dressed as an NYPD officer and had a fake Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Patty V: mustache and Keith was wondering, is that supposed to be like Frank Reagan from Blue Bloods? And I was like, I don't know if that show is even that well known in in England or he just figured an NYPD officer would have a mustache. I don't know. Chesla Wechsler: Ha ha ha. Patty V: But that that was definitely comic relief Chesla Wechsler: Yes. Patty V: to me. and I did like the burgeoning relationship between business relationship between Al and and Ruth. I said before that that I liked. I don't know if that's gonna succeed or not, but you know, I liked that. And I couldn't quite figure out though why this didn't ring true to me when the Bert was it Bert that did put did the electric wrong and and she made it talk Chesla Wechsler: of course. Of course it's Bert! Patty V: Yeah, for yeah, well it could have been Joe. But it was for Joe Chesla Wechsler: True. That's true. Patty V: shocked the DJ and so but meanwhile Martin has discovered that Louisa's got this brain problem and she shouldn't get on the pl plane and so he's trying to get to the airport and so he's trying to help them through it while still going full speed to the airport and Al and Morwena or ca he's telling Morwena go get you know, go get this, go do this and you know, shock and blah blah blah. And so but Jenny was there. Wouldn't she as a pharmacist have had to take CPR and wouldn't she be a better person to do the C PR than two people who haven't? And why would she, you know 'Cause he's saying, Tell everybody to back up Okay and and back up and the people did but I just thought Jenny I thought that was a little contrived to that Al and Morwena were, you know, doing that instead of somebody who might be better, better trained. Chesla Wechsler: That's you know, good good spot. You f you find things that I never even think of, like the whole idea of like Louisa being with the children underneath the ladder and like why is she not getting those kids out of there? Why is she not getting them off? Like you you think of things that I I ne that never occurred Patty V: Out of there, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: to me and it's always fun to hear them. Patty V: Yeah. So in and that one I was like, Okay, Mrs. Tishell is well, Mrs. Tishell might not be able to do it 'cause of her neck thing. She might not be able to lean the right way, but seem Chesla Wechsler: Right, yeah. Well she was wasn't she trying to help Mrs. Tishell, like in Patty V: She was and they I think she wanted to do something differently or something or they were I I I don't know. I was ki for whatever reason, I forget, I was okay with them pushing Mrs. Tishell back, but Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I Patty V: I thought Jenny could be competent and do it and be and maybe Chesla Wechsler: Doesn't Patty V: be better trained than they were, but they weren't using her. But I Chesla Wechsler: Doesn't Morwenna... Patty V: have taken CPR, the defibrillator, it's it's pretty much impossible to do it wrong. It tells you what to do. And so I had confidence that if they did what the machine tells you that they would succeed and they did you know, it was Chesla Wechsler: Right. Patty V: okay. But I still thought it was a little weird that it it wouldn't be Jenny doing it. Chesla Wechsler: Doesn't doesn't Morwenna push Mrs. Tishell off and say, Like, get away, you nutter or something? Patty V: Well, yeah, because I do think Mrs. Tishell had lost it. I I do th and Morwenna saw some of that. So I do think Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Patty V: Mrs. Tishell is not quite right yet. And so her being pushed but I don't think there's anything wrong with Jenny. So Chesla Wechsler: Yeah, true. Yeah, yeah. Patty V: that's why I thought, push her away, but she should you know, she could maybe help. But anyway. Chesla Wechsler: So Martin manages to get himself I I don't need a ticket. I'm not trying to go to Spain, right? Patty V: Yeah, that was interesting. And then and then actually, I mean, if he didn't have the fake mustache on, if he just showed I I don't know whether British police I guess they probably don't dress like that, so it w it would look more like a costume anyway. But the fake mustache really made it worse with Joe. But he did convince him that I can't remember exactly what his words were, but d do you want to be the person that, when she goes on that plane and dies on the plane, do you want to be the person that that could have saved her and didn't? Chesla Wechsler: That's right, yeah. Patty V: so yay Joe, you said something smart. So Chesla Wechsler: Yep. Patty V: so like I said, more comic relief, a couple of times where there was brains and so y yeah, he's definitely gro he's growing on me. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Although he's pretty funny during the Stalker episode when he he pretends there's a SWAT team coming and he barks like dogs and stuff ro rolls Patty V: Yeah, yeah. Chesla Wechsler: into the living room when everything's already done. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. That was a little more inept than that episode, but yeah. Chesla Wechsler: So so now we get to the surgery. I mean, Louisa needs this Patty V: Okay. Chesla Wechsler: brain surgery or actually it's not brain surgery, it's a cardiovascular surgery, but Patty V: But okay, so talking to the doctor who knew him and was in awe of him, so he's quizzing him on different things, It's clear I think anybody would be concerned about that doctor not knowing those answers to those questions and yet doing the surgery. Chesla Wechsler: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Patty V: So, as soon as he wanted him to go in the closet, you know he's gonna lock him in there. And so I don't have any problem with him not wanting that doctor to do the surgery, but him doing it on his own wife, even if he didn't have any blood phobia or anything. That just seems like Not a good idea, it would never be allowed and so I I don't know, I didn't find that very realistic. But yeah. He thinks he's the best, yeah. Chesla Wechsler: To me it is so Martin though. It's like I am the I am the only one who's gonna do this on my wife. Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. So Chesla Wechsler: But gosh, you know, that whole conversation they have when she's got the premeds and she's just laughing and talking about him in a thong and like you have a big head. And Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: he just looks so concerned, and then she finally says Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: something like, This is serious, isn't it? And he just looks Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: at her and he goes, mmm. Like that very noncommittal mmm that he makes and you're Patty V: Yeah. Yeah. Well he doesn't want to get her super scared, but yes, it's serious. Yeah. so because of that surgery and recovery and so forth, she can't run yet. So but it wasn't like, Okay, everything's all better and I'm not gonna go. It was more like I can't go so you know, it's the end of end of a season. Chesla Wechsler: But now what did you think of you're my patient and you're my wife? Patty V: Well, what I was afraid he was gonna stop at you're my patient and not say, and you're my wife. And I was like, okay, I'm glad he at least added that. so yeah, I mean I felt like that was vintage Martin to answer that way. You know, of course you're my patient. And you're my wife, okay. It was like and you know, it might have been better if you said him in the other order, but Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. Yeah. I Patty V: but still, at least he said it. Chesla Wechsler: They to me Pauline who who we did a another podcast that was on this particular season, and how heartbreaking the ending is, really, because you just watched him from the back walking out of the hospital and and you're just it it it's heartbreaking to think things are no better, we're ending the season, they're married, but things are no better. Really. And Patty V: Right. Chesla Wechsler: you're my patient and you're my wife and it's just w I I have to go back and and look at our discussion of that, but that she w she was like, It should have been you're my wife and you're my patient And I I thought to me it was always gonna be you're my patient and you're my wife. Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: yeah, so where do you think things go? Patty V: so anyway, yeah. but I know there's four more seasons. So I know that it can't be like Doc Martin all by himself, but yeah, there's Th they do have a lot to fix and to me it's a matter of he wants to fix it. He's gonna need some help with how, but she has to wanna fix it too, and he's not the only one that has to change. I'm sorry. I'm not sorry. He's that's what I think. Chesla Wechsler: Yeah. I think that's very perfect. Yeah. Patty V: Yeah, she has to change and I'm not sure if she realizes that. And she should by now. Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: No, I I agree with you. You would think. You would think. But well, it sounds like you're gonna keep watching. Yeah, you're gonna I I I pretty Patty V: definitely, definitely. But I will I have to say, I don't like all the seasons the same and this was less I was I you know, season five, the ending of season five was so good and so I just thought it was like so perfect, I guess that set season six, the bar for season six really high and I w I was I was not as excited about it, but I did like when finally we would get to the end. Okay. Aunt Ruth thinks there's some hope and sh she's he she made it really clear to him and it seemed like he got it that he has to change. and It just it gave me a little a little bit more hope. It was a little more interesting, and Chesla Wechsler: I mean you've you've got the budding spark between Al Al Morwenna. You've got the budding business relationship with Ruth and Al. Patty V: Yeah, there's stuff there that that'll be interesting to see how it pans out and I I hope they don't get rid of Aunt Ruth on me the way they've gotten rid of for next season because I felt like she was had a really pivotal role in in the things I liked in this season she was actually pretty involved in, so Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Sure, sure. Yeah. Well that is good. I am always pleased to have you here, giving us your impression of Patty V: Yeah. Chesla Wechsler: Doc Martin and folks out in Watching Land.
