- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: You suck your business sucks, and you'll never be successful.
- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: How many people paid you five per year?
- 0:05[SPEAKER_01]: You never lied to anybody?
- 0:06[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, real quick.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_00]: Anything you see in here?
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's over, bro.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_01]: What's your belief system?
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: Your marriage, yes, for woman, or you let your wife wear pants.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_00]: When I ask you for something, and you don't give it to me, are you knowing that you're lying to me?
- 0:20[SPEAKER_01]: Lying?
- 0:21[SPEAKER_00]: You can not move being this comfortable, which would be in the crib, and your draw is just like...
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: My job is to make you feel, my job is to make you quit, my job is to make you cry, but if you survive it, success is another side.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_01]: Do you ever get nervous, David?
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: No, by the way.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_01]: Just like, you know, on your shows, like, do you ever, even as an interviewer?
- 0:48[SPEAKER_01]: You ever get like, what?
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: I interviewed John Hope Bryant yesterday, I was kind of nervous.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: Really?
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but I don't know why.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_01]: Really?
- 0:54[SPEAKER_01]: Who's John Hope Bryant?
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: John Hope Bryant?
- 0:56[SPEAKER_01]: Who's that?
- 0:58[SPEAKER_00]: incredible human being, incredible entrepreneur, you thought leader, incredible.
- 1:03[SPEAKER_00]: I learned so much.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: Well, if you don't want to learn them, I don't think I was nervous.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_00]: I was more anxious because I was just excited.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_01]: That's how I feel right now.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: I really get nervous about episodes.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_01]: That's good.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you never looked.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_01]: You look.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: You ever been nervous to have a conversation with someone?
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: Like outside of the cameras.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, just like a regular conversation.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_01]: I've been, yeah, not a lot.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_00]: Or you're nervous about.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: Unless it was like bad news.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_00]: Or like something that you have to bring to your significant other, or talk about, that could be nerve record.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'll say, I've been nervous to talk about, I think it depends on what they ask me, but usually I'm very open and very comfortable in conversation because I'm a good communicator, but yeah, I've been nervous about talking about certain things, depending on the topic.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_01]: You're an example.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_01]: I think for me, I'll say,
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: That's a very good question, um, I'll say the, I think I got nervous about people asking me about like, uh, my past divorce or something like that.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_01]: Things like that.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: I will say, not now.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think then, um, why were you nervous though?
- 2:25[SPEAKER_01]: I think because at that point when I was going through the divorce, everybody's wondering what happened and, you know, and then you're getting judged at so many levels at that time.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: And it's so funny.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_01]: That's a great question, yes, because looking back, I'm like, why was I nervous?
- 2:43[SPEAKER_01]: But I think it was because with people thought we look like at one point and then it was almost kind of like,
- 2:52[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay, so it wasn't all what it looked like, and I think that's what it was.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: That's like you're nervous to talk about it, unless it was something you didn't want to reveal, but I'm not talking about like on camera.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just saying, having a conversation with someone, I just have conversations with people, so I'm not nervous.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: And I have the ability to forget cameras are on.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's good.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: So, that's good.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: I'm the same person on camera as off camera.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: So on camera, people put on whatever they got up on to present something.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: But if you're the same off camera, it doesn't matter what's recorded and because nothing I say, I'm ashamed of.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: Or I'm just gonna ask questions like we didn't really talk about, you know, even while you're here, what we're gonna talk about, we're gonna figure something out though.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_01]: Are we on?
- 3:45[SPEAKER_01]: We filmed this?
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: Who we're filming?
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: Ben, start again.
- 3:49[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, okay, okay.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, make sure you write.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_00]: This is a good opportunity to introduce yourself and what you do.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, thank you.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: Well, first, thanks for having me.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_01]: I really appreciate it, David, and you're definitely an inspiration to me.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_01]: So thank you for having me.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: You're a great guy, and I just love what you do for the podcast community and our culture.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_01]: You're still not like me after this kind of thing.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was okay.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's okay.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm ready for it.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_01]: My name is Brandy Lee.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_01]: I grew up there, went to Penn State for undergrad for corporate communications.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_01]: We are.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: I went to Robert Morris for my master's degree in organization leadership.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_01]: And I moved to Georgia about a little over 11 years ago.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm an interior designer.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: But that's where I'm at.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: How does interior designing pay?
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: Good, so let me preface and say, so I'm the terror designer.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_01]: I have a small business that's full time, but I also have a full-time career as work for a nonprofit as a senior director for food and trade.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, God.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_01]: So I still work as a during a day, but it's so funny.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of people know me more for interior design.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, they know you're free and I promise.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they know you're free of your job.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they will and then let's say and sometime I do post it like I just posted a food pantry We just opened in the South Atlanta high school.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so it's beautiful.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but what made you post about that?
- 5:14[SPEAKER_01]: Because one, I believe I'm definitely a woman of service for real.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_01]: And through and through God's work.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I believe design and leadership kind of like meets.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: It's almost kind of like we're design meets leadership.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_01]: And that a food pantry, I oversee 18, excuse me, actually 19 pantries now.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_01]: We just opened up a second one in Atlanta.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm still committed to it, and I love my job.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_01]: Am I ready?
- 5:41[SPEAKER_01]: Am I ready?
- 5:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I set it up.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: I did everything.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: I do all the pantry.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_01]: So that's where, in the CEO, let's me, the CEO let me kind of go in there and design it, set it up, and get everything.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: And my goal is to make it smell good, look good, and make the family's feel well gone.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: Got it.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_00]: So real quick, why did you post this?
- 6:00[SPEAKER_01]: I posted it because I wanted to show community and this is part of who I am.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_01]: I am, you know, even though my page is a small business for interior design, but it's also lifestyle of what I do.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: Let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see, let
- 6:23[SPEAKER_01]: to welcome you, the families, the students, and just look how beautiful Croger did have helped in a stock everything.
- 6:30[SPEAKER_01]: It looks amazing.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that inspires us.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: But we are here today.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: This is going to be our official launch.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_01]: We will be doing our first distribution on Monday.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm so excited.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_01]: And just look how much food we got.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_01]: Everything just looks beautiful.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: Put a little greenery in here.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_01]: And my goal for a food pantry is always to make it feel welcoming, clean, smell good, little jazz music to make our families feel welcome, make them feel like they're in a real grocery store because we may not actually shop and fill the whole refrigerator, but this is additional items that we want to be able to help some of them and families just to have a little extra at home.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_01]: So, if you're into South Atlantic area and you know kids that go here in families, please let
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: You did design that there, right?
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, absolutely.
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: So the answer I'm looking for.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Why do you post this?
- 7:22[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, to show my versatility.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that and to give out the message known that there is a food community, food bank, because I'm all about community as well, and it just in the lines with design, aesthetically pleasing making people feel good.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_01]: For sure.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_00]: If your mind is thinking about building in, obviously, you love your job, so that's awesome.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_00]: On our social media platform, I think we could have did both.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that you put that together.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I asked you, but that verse person doesn't know.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: Because when it shows your versatility, I don't just do living rooms.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_00]: Like I can make your store or your studio.
- 8:06[SPEAKER_00]: feel inviting.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: The reason why I put this together this way is because I want people to feel invited.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: The reason I chose this music, the reason why I chose this design, why I decided to put this this way because it doubled down on the fact that you are an interior designer.
- 8:24[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: And if your goal is to like really build your business,
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: everything you do has to have this in mind at some point.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_00]: Not to exploit your non-profit, you know, okay?
- 8:34[SPEAKER_00]: But we got to accomplish two objectives because the comments could be about, wow, I never thought about this that several grocery store like that or, but I would imagine they're just leaning into congratulations to this great.
- 8:51[SPEAKER_00]: This is awesome.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_00]: God's work.
- 8:53[SPEAKER_00]: This is amazing.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_00]: But what I'm saying is we're gonna accomplish both goals.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: Because you want to build your interior design this is bigger.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's gonna be really difficult to chase two dreams.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: And dream maybe your job in building that part of it and being a leader and being an interior designer.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_00]: I think you have all the stuff to become.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna be really, really successful once we align everything.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, thank you.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_01]: I'm taking that in, absolutely.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: So back to the last question, how does interior design pay?
- 9:30[SPEAKER_01]: So it pays well.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: And if I'm being a very transparent, I think it pays well.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: David, because of the fact I have a career as well.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_01]: To answer your question on the second note, how does it pay if I just only had that?
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: Great.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: I believe I can say it pays really well because I have a supplement job, but if I take that away to answer that question honestly, I would say it pays good, not well.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: And I think there is a difference.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: You'd be struggling if you were full-time interior design.
- 10:05[SPEAKER_00]: That was what you said.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm, you know what, I'm gonna say, I'm gonna probably say yes.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: only because of the fact that, see, interior design is not in need, it's a, it's a, it's a luxury.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_01]: So, what do you say that?
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, because, great question.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_01]: I can break it down like this, and the best way I can say is that luxury everybody wants their house to look, want their house to look beautiful, who doesn't, right?
- 10:40[SPEAKER_01]: But everybody can afford interior designer.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: What do we do?
- 10:43[SPEAKER_01]: We go on Pinterest.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_01]: We go to Instagram.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_01]: We look for inspiration.
- 10:47[SPEAKER_01]: If everybody can afford interior designer, they will do it.
- 10:51[SPEAKER_01]: Once you start getting up and to that upper echelon, that's where the money start really coming in.
- 10:57[SPEAKER_01]: Do not get me wrong.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_01]: I'm very grateful for me to be a small business for the income I make off of interior design.
- 11:04[SPEAKER_01]: So, I'm not going to say as a need of someone like an electric, like an electric or a plumber.
- 11:11[SPEAKER_01]: That's a need.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_01]: everything go out, David, you need that.
- 11:15[SPEAKER_01]: And Tara designed when people lose their job, they're not worried about an interior designer, worried about keeping a roof over to hit, food owner on their table and everything.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_01]: And Tara designer would be something secondary.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_01]: I want my house look nice, but I can't afford that.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_01]: But I need my roof and I need my hot water tank fix.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: I need that.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_01]: So,
- 11:34[SPEAKER_01]: I'll say where I'm at, it's not in need, it's a luxury.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_01]: I think once you start climbing the ladder up to, when you start getting into the million dollar ranges, that becomes a need because it's part of your lifestyle.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_00]: I would say that once you decide that it's a need and not a luxury, you'll be attracting people to look at it as a need, not a luxury.
- 11:58[SPEAKER_00]: A house cleaner.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_00]: Is that a need or a luxury?
- 12:01[SPEAKER_01]: That is a need.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_01]: That will depend on who you ask.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: I'll say, I'm OCD, so I'll say a need, but for me, but for me, for a person, luxury, luxury, luxury.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: luxury for sure.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: Counseling for marriages that are going through it, need or luxury.
- 12:25[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, need, need, need for sure.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: I have problems in my house where, um, so when we come in the garage, it's like connected to the kitchen and we have this rule that we take our shoes off before we walk in the house.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_00]: The problem is, I take the shoes off, walk in a house, do what I do in the house, and eventually we go upstairs and go to bed.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_00]: And then I have the next day get another pair of shoes and carry them downstairs and then walk out in a house when I come home the second day.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_00]: The shoes from day one are still there.
- 13:07[SPEAKER_00]: I'm also taking off shoes from day two, which means now I have two pairs of shoes.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_00]: Imagine a scenario where there's a load of shoes and my wife has like put these shoes in a bag and it's like five at a time and take them upstairs or She comes home from a long day of dealing with the kids and the The dishes are piled up in the sink or it's me my wife my 16 year old daughter my two little kids and a good portion of the year her parents Stay with us.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_01]: Okay
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: it's a lot of clothes to wash. Yeah.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_00]: And a lot of clothes to fold.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_00]: So how do you wash the clothes, fold the clothes, the kitchen, take my shoes, and figure out a way to keep your room straight.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_00]: What that creates is pressure on the marriage.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: So in our house cleaner comes to have your home.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: It releases pressure from the marriage.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: So then we won't need a counselor.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_00]: Is a house cleaner for a marriage a need or a luxury?
- 14:21[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_00]: If you ask a top performing house cleaner, should tell you it's a need.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: She would say, or he would say, this house will fall apart without me.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: But that person will make more money because when she's talking to a client, she doesn't see it as a luxury.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: She's seeing it as, you're really, really thirsty.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: And I've got water.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_00]: You need this water.
- 14:47[SPEAKER_00]: Well, the way you're looking at your clients is I've got some juice.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_00]: And you've got plenty of juice at home.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_00]: You don't really need my juice.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: But if you want my juice, you can have it.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_01]: Mm.
- 14:58[SPEAKER_00]: the way you're approaching it, the way you talk about it, the energy is, this is the, I don't understand.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_00]: If you, if you get a new home, and it's your first home, there's your dream home, do you realize if it doesn't feel like home, it's like a dream wasted that I've had for the last 40 years.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: So why would you not get a interior designer
- 15:29[SPEAKER_00]: But when you see it that way, your clients will see it that way.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that was good.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: Interior design.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_00]: Is it a need or a luxury?
- 15:37[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, a need.
- 15:38[SPEAKER_01]: It's a need.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, a need.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, my gosh.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: Even so, like, imagine someone's office.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_00]: If my office is cluttered, I can't think straight.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_00]: I can't find stuff.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: I clean office and a cluttered office could mean the difference between $300,000 in my business.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_00]: like a pink street.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_01]: And can I say this?
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: I agree.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_01]: Everything you're saying and I am taking that in wholeheartedly because to be honest, yes, I really believe door times I looked at it like that.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: Do I believe it's a need?
- 16:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 16:18[SPEAKER_00]: No, you don't.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: No, you don't.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: Not before this conversation.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: Because I just asked you a question, I don't lead you on anything.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: I just want to see what your brain says and how you see the world.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: He said, well, it caught him in, you know, that church is a need and it's my little job and nothing about interior design.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_00]: Well,
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: Our clients aren't people who lost their job.
- 16:41[SPEAKER_01]: No, you're right, and you're right.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_01]: I did say to, okay, can I rebuttal a little bit can I step back and say, so your question was spot on and that's such a great question.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_01]: Your exact question is it a luxury or a need and I definitely said luxury.
- 17:00[SPEAKER_01]: Me personally, I think I was answering it for as a whole, as a audience.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but for me, as an interior designer, personally, if you're asking Brandy, me, but if you're asking me as an audience, I should have probably said that first, um, as a whole, the outsiders looking in, I'll say a luxury, and that's the problem.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: That's the problem.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: I think you think it's important, but you think it's a luxury to people.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: And I got to figure out a way to get you to see that they need you, and it's not just a luxury.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_01]: Oh man.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_00]: That's the problem.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 17:46[SPEAKER_00]: You explain well problems.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_01]: No, you're absolutely right.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_01]: So, man, I didn't think of it like that.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_01]: I think I'll say once I'm actually doing a design and people, you know, so funny, when we walk through the, it's called a discovery walk through, when you first walk into the homes and you're like, Brandy, I want my whole house done.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, okay, great walk in, start talking about budget and they get to the budget ago.
- 18:16[SPEAKER_01]: I will start with the bottom floor.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_01]: you know, someone like, okay, and my job is to break it up in phases, because I already know that the average person that comes to me as a professional, now I can tell that my clientele is starting a, I don't this is no disrespect to even my first clients, but now every designer wants that more upper echelon climb, more bigger budgets, more bigger things, but I break it up into phases so that way they don't feel like they're missing out and saying, hey, you know, well,
- 18:45[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, I'll tell them the first of all, you don't have to get your old house done.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: Let's start off with the bottom student phases.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_01]: Well, always say, where is your priority?
- 18:55[SPEAKER_01]: Where would that go first?
- 18:56[SPEAKER_01]: And they'll say, depending on where their lifestyle look like, I'll always say to bear room and your living room, and it's going to be probably one of your most expensive rooms in the office.
- 19:06[SPEAKER_01]: So to get to your point of answering that question where the meet comes in,
- 19:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's when I start bringing more of that neat conversation and if not the luxury the neat, because they'll go bring me my bear room's chaos, I'm like, well we can't sleep in chaos, and there's a difference between sleep and rest.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_01]: You could sleep all day, but if you're not resting is a different thing, and your bear room is the first thing you see in the last thing you see.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll always make sure I put that needle in there.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_01]: So to go back to what you're
- 19:35[SPEAKER_01]: When I'm in the work, oh, I explain it to the depths of the need, where I'm going wrong, going back to where you at, is looking at as a whole as a need, not as the luxury.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_01]: And I think what you're trying to tell me, well, I'll let you finish explain that.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_01]: But I think I'm starting to see where to, some of the disconnect is.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't believe you, that when you're in the work you just turn it on, you are who you are.
- 20:08[SPEAKER_00]: Your mindset is your mindset.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_00]: When you walk in the house, you might assess the old house, but I know that I know there's something in the back of your mind says we probably need to just start in the bedroom.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_01]: They're putting on a budget.
- 20:24[SPEAKER_00]: but it shouldn't be about it, but so for one, we shouldn't be walking in the house if we don't have a budget.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_01]: Well, we know the budget.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, well, well, this is the discovery.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_01]: When you first go on for the discovery, you're getting to know them.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_01]: That's where you're going.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_00]: Explain the budget, the budget.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_00]: How would you define the budget?
- 20:42[SPEAKER_01]: So just going back to the discovery.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_01]: Once we go through the house, I see what their need is.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: We talk through some things.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: And usually I kind of get like a quick discovery just through the conversation, the console before I even get to the house.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_01]: So I have some what of an understanding.
- 20:57[SPEAKER_01]: But once we get down to the nitty gritty, they already kind of have an idea of what I'm going to ask them because I'll say be prepared for these questions when we have the,
- 21:04[SPEAKER_01]: And then when we have the budget, sometimes they'll think they have more than what they got or something depending on what it is.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_01]: And once they tell me the budget, I can already scope out which can be affordable and we can not.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_00]: Just try to describe, just put a definition on a client's budget.
- 21:21[SPEAKER_00]: How was you describe it?
- 21:25[SPEAKER_01]: In terms of like you mean just far as like just a blanket when you come to budget, what does that mean?
- 21:33[SPEAKER_01]: What can you afford and how many rooms can you get done good?
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and how do you determine What they can afford and how many rooms they can get done?
- 21:43[SPEAKER_01]: Few things scope meaning like Is your are you asking for this big luxury transformation look or are we just looking for a refresh?
- 21:54[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm saying, how do you determine what that number is, what that budget is?
- 21:58[SPEAKER_01]: Just from doing it.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_01]: So just from doing it.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: So based on what they're telling you.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_00]: So basically, what's a normal budget?
- 22:06[SPEAKER_01]: 60 to 70,000.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_01]: 60 to 70,000.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_01]: So the budget is 60 to 70,000.
- 22:12[SPEAKER_00]: Tell you 60 to 70,000.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_00]: That's when you're saying,
- 22:22[SPEAKER_00]: Just did a bedroom, or are you saying the whole house is 67?
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: So it depends if they're asking me to knock out walls.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_01]: That's such a tricky question because if they're asking me David to, hey, Brandy, I want this wall knocked out to go to an extended to this bare room.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_01]: And I want the steps that connect to, and I want flying eagles going over.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_01]: Then yeah, I would like, well, that eats up your whole 60 cat at the top if we're talking renovation.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: it really just depends on what they're asking for.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: But if you're just looking for a simple refresh some good paint, new lighting, certain things like that can always do to trick, then 60 can cover a few rooms, just depending on what you want and how big of a transformation you're looking for.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_00]: Think about your last client.
- 23:03[SPEAKER_00]: The last client that didn't need construction.
- 23:06[SPEAKER_00]: We're just a refresh.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_00]: I want to make this look like a home.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_00]: Got it?
- 23:14[SPEAKER_00]: What did they say to
- 23:19[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, my last client, okay 25,000 cash cash to pay, okay, the 25,000 do the whole job
- 23:40[SPEAKER_01]: No, we had this, I told her, I didn't want the last one to look like a struggle.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_01]: So I said, instead of doing four rooms, this can cover three for the refresh you're looking for.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: For the look you're going for, and I rather be honest with them than them to be surprised or given false hope.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: How much would it been to get all four rooms done?
- 24:03[SPEAKER_01]: She probably needed another 12 to 15 grand.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_00]: So 40,000?
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'll say that.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, when she said 25 does that mean she only had 25?
- 24:17[SPEAKER_01]: I always asked her, is there a little wiggle room?
- 24:20[SPEAKER_01]: Her wiggle room was the 25.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_01]: It was really, if I'm not mistaken, I think hers was 18 and she said the wiggle was all way up till 25.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_00]: Do you think she didn't have 40,000?
- 24:33[SPEAKER_00]: I actually actually could have pulled another 12
- 24:42[SPEAKER_01]: No, for personal reasons, things that she has went to me, and that's some time I can understand.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_01]: Let me tell you something.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_00]: If somebody has 25,000, they've got another 12 somewhere.
- 24:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I've heard that.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_00]: Every time.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_01]: You're right, I've heard that.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_00]: The way you, what I'm saying is, the way you see the world is going to be about is going to be a reflection of what you accept.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_00]: the job needs to be done, 40 is what you need.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_00]: Is this what you're looking for?
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: Is this the feeling that you want when you walk in a home?
- 25:18[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we need to figure out a way to get the other money.
- 25:21[SPEAKER_00]: I've had situations, and I'm doing a build out right now, where they ask me my budget.
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: I say, this is the budget.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_00]: They say, well, for what you're asking for, is what you said you wanted.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you want to open a building
- 25:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's gonna be another $4,000, and I say, okay.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_00]: Even though I said my budget was $4,000 less.
- 25:47[SPEAKER_00]: But when they paint the picture, and I feel the passion is like, man, I don't do bad work, I don't do have work.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_00]: I wanna give you exactly what you want it.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_00]: And I promise you, you'll be happier for it.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_00]: I said, cool, cut the check.
- 26:02[SPEAKER_01]: But, see, that's good, but.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_01]: I, I don't want to, so it's just, that's good, but it's tricky.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_01]: And what I say is tricky.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: You have children?
- 26:15[SPEAKER_01]: No.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_01]: No children.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have, um, how are you going to school?
- 26:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_01]: I, I get my master's degree.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_01]: or do you mean for did I go to school for this college?
- 26:25[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, you're going to college, yeah.
- 26:27[SPEAKER_00]: So imagine a kid, if my, it's not, it's not being pushy.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's about getting people what they need.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: But you think more, you think money first, in terms of like, I want to protect their budget.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_00]: Instead of, I want to give them what they need.
- 26:47[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just asking, I'm telling them as hard to explain.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_00]: But if you look at the world differently and you start counting other people's pockets and you deeply understand what a transformation does, you'll walk with a different like bravado and approach and you won't look at it as pushy as about what you need.
- 27:10[SPEAKER_00]: Recorded with podcasts and created a conversation today where the guy is trying to get me to do this project
- 27:20[SPEAKER_00]: for $20,000 and I'm saying it's $24,000 and he runs through all this stuff on why he was 20.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_00]: I said, you don't want 20.
- 27:34[SPEAKER_00]: You really want, you want the full package.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: Because this money that you're taking out is going to be taken out somewhere, and you're not going to be satisfied with the 20 at all.
- 27:43[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to feel like you wasted your money on the 20.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_00]: You're trying to say $4,000, but I know what you need.
- 27:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I rather not do the job and you leave unsatisfied.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_00]: because I only want to walk into your project and leave and you say that was great and refer me.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_00]: That's what he said.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_00]: I'll give you this one for a thousand.
- 28:05[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 28:06[SPEAKER_00]: Because I'm not trying to protect his pockets.
- 28:09[SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to give him what he needs.
- 28:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 28:12[SPEAKER_00]: But I can convert that because it's not like I just want more money.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'm saying for what you're asking me for, this is what it requires.
- 28:22[SPEAKER_00]: And this isn't about price right now.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_00]: We're talking a lot about money, but the lesson that I'm trying to give you isn't money.
- 28:30[SPEAKER_00]: It's your perspective of the world.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_00]: It's your perspective.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_01]: No, you're right, I shadowed another interior designer probably last year and I like to I'm a student at a game.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_01]: I always want to learn people who has done it longer than me, better than me, learn processes, everything.
- 28:55[SPEAKER_01]: And my fiancee is like you got a bleeding heart for a lot of the single moms and I've gave a lot of discounts And I'll never forget all's telling another designer.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_01]: She said you want to be discount brandy Like man, it's like I was like man.
- 29:09[SPEAKER_01]: She's like you don't want to be discount brandy.
- 29:11[SPEAKER_01]: I said well
- 29:13[SPEAKER_01]: I like to help people out.
- 29:15[SPEAKER_01]: She's like, yeah, but you don't want to get taken advantage of.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I had to say that because this goes back to your question of your right, it's perspective.
- 29:26[SPEAKER_01]: But I do, so this is the thing.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_01]: I'm very big on how your house should feel.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_01]: Not so much how it should look.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_01]: It really is how it should feel David.
- 29:38[SPEAKER_01]: And that is a very true thing that is in me.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_01]: Because when the real tell you know when you walk in your house, it should tell you yes.
- 29:47[SPEAKER_01]: I feel like you don't got to have the biggest thing you're going to have to have the most luxury thing in your home to make it feel warm and cozy and welcoming but it should feel like this is home.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_01]: Like, man, now I'm older.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: I can't wait to get home.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and it's not because I got a $10,000 bid or a $11,000 so far or anything like that.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to have that to achieve that, but it's the most simple things of organization.
- 30:12[SPEAKER_01]: And I really believe I am, like a lot of my clients always say.
- 30:18[SPEAKER_01]: Brandy, thank you for being understanding and patient.
- 30:21[SPEAKER_01]: This goes back to the budget in your right.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, some of them probably do have it, but to not push them away to feel like, what is it?
- 30:28[SPEAKER_01]: Fear of missing out foam or something like that?
- 30:31[SPEAKER_01]: That's where I get into David where I break it up in phases.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_01]: Cause again, this goes back to, I want the whole house done, and I get the budget and every like,
- 30:39[SPEAKER_01]: We'll start with the bottom floor brand.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know some, right?
- 30:41[SPEAKER_01]: So that's where the part of me come in, where I'm like, okay, no problem.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: They've like, Brandy just, hey, and I've had most of my clients they've it or repeat customers.
- 30:56[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not even joking, see I'm not exaggerating and I'm being very transparent.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right, right,
- 31:24[SPEAKER_00]: you'll actually get less pushback because when they say ah I ain't really got the money well I understand man I really wish you did because you're you may not know it right now but
- 31:40[SPEAKER_00]: all the other areas of your life will get better when your home is secure.
- 31:44[SPEAKER_00]: But we don't have the tools to really, like, to rebuttal that because the way you see it is, let me make sure the pockets are taken care of first and the job is done second.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's a different, it's a different provider.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_00]: This is a need.
- 32:02[SPEAKER_00]: You talk, have you ever had a really
- 32:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's horrible also.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, expensive, nice dress, which is not put together well.
- 32:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_00]: You want people to walk out with the complete outfit.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_00]: And again, this is not about sales, what I'm saying is internally, you need to stop looking at this as a luxury and look at every single job as a need because it's gonna change their life.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_01]: I've received that.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_01]: No, you're right.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I received that.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_01]: I do.
- 32:35[SPEAKER_01]: I think you're absolutely spot on about that.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it is perspective.
- 32:41[SPEAKER_01]: I think there probably is a little bit of the discount brandy in there.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_01]: But I do feel because
- 32:51[SPEAKER_01]: that I give out to everybody, let's do it in a phase.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_01]: And most designers will tell you, we have a lot of clients.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_01]: We do know most of our clients are professionals.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody to come to us is not a millionaire.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_01]: Have I dealt with some?
- 33:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_01]: I have a few, but believe it or not, believe it or not, some of my millionaire clients are the ones who want the most discount.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, you know, and you know what's up tonight.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, all the time.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm just like, most of my millionaire clients.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I mean, and I don't want to act like, oh, darling, I got Oprah on my list.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: And, but the ones that I do have their great people, but some of them do want discounts.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, we, at right.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_01]: So that's how you become a millionaire right there you go and I'm like right exactly and I'm gonna say okay but I'll be honest the ones that I do know have a little bit I do push a little bit more with them because I know um and man I just feel like a aha moment just happened yeah aha moment just happened.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's a conversation has another door price for taking jobs it says everything to do with how you see your role in people's lives.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not pushing in sales.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_00]: If I'm starting to talk about podcasting, no?
- 34:01[SPEAKER_00]: I don't see how a entrepreneur or a business owner in 2026 can be building a brand without a podcast.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_00]: It just doesn't make sense to me.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_01]: Let me build me a podcast.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_00]: Why would you?
- 34:15[SPEAKER_00]: How else do you drive deep connection with your audience?
- 34:19[SPEAKER_01]: Well, social media helps us now.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, everybody's a content creator at this point.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_00]: 30 second clips do not drive a beat connection with an audience.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_00]: That's why you can see a viral post or if you get a viral post, it's not necessarily going to change your follower account.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_01]: No, you're right.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: You're right.
- 34:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_00]: because they just see it, they like it.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh, it's a cool piece of content, but they don't follow you, they just like that piece of content.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_00]: How much viral content we see?
- 34:45[SPEAKER_00]: We have no idea who the creator is.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_00]: But if you sit there and listen to me for 45 minutes, you set it yourself, you and your fiance watch our show.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
- 34:55[SPEAKER_00]: Cause we show up.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, right, you do.
- 34:57[SPEAKER_00]: And you probably see less,
- 35:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's not I don't really build with a huge focus on let me give you some game short form content now.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_00]: I do a lot To drive like deep connection through long form content if you sit here and listen to me for 30 minutes 45 minutes You locked in oh, I am always be and what you see me in person is like oh, man I feel like I know you So I don't see how someone can build a brand in 2026 and not have a podcast.
- 35:28[SPEAKER_00]: I don't understand
- 35:31[SPEAKER_00]: So I carry that with me, which is why people come to me for podcast assistance, coming for podcast coaching, coming for podcast, I'm telling this guy as a text business.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, you have a podcast, you know, he's like, he goes on other podcasts.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, bro, you need to build your own table.
- 35:48[SPEAKER_00]: This is the biggest media medium in the world right now.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone's listening to podcasts because it's driving connections.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_00]: So if you want more clients, you need the people to listen to you not just in February When you start putting content out saying let me do your taxes We need to be cultivating and educating April May June July August September, October November tuned in January So when I'm ready to get my taxes done in February March.
- 36:18[SPEAKER_00]: Let's walk on to.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 36:21[SPEAKER_01]: Are you ready?
- 36:22[SPEAKER_00]: I carry that because I believe it, it's not just saying it, so that's why people come to me for the assistance.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_01]: No, I believe, but do you believe that there's different levels of like, like, okay, so I may not be the Davis Shands of design just yet, right?
- 36:40[SPEAKER_01]: And I believe there's different levels of those thought processes.
- 36:44[SPEAKER_01]: So like for an example, you can be a great interior designer, but horrible at business.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: I've met a lot of interior designers like I went to a conference that they held a whole every year twice a year for interior designers and I remember the one-gads designer said who wants to be who just wants to be very successful everybody raised their hand.
- 37:04[SPEAKER_01]: It was like well and who all went saw these brand deals and not a lot of people some people raised their hands some people raised and I was one of the people the brand deals.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody you always tell me, Brandi you, you articulate well, you're good at communication.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_01]: I love people.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_01]: I have a heart for people that falls back into the leadership things that I do even outside of that.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm one of the most genuine people you ever meet.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_01]: my perfect no but a good person.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_01]: So I do believe that I am learning, I believe there's different level, I believe life demands a different level of you and I feel like I'm here for a reason and I get to meet David Shaz.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_01]: You know, so he and this is a time for me to listen.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_01]: Some everybody I think sometimes everybody feel like they got the answers everything.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know at all And there's times for me to be like, okay, God align me.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_01]: I would have never thought a year ago I'd be sitting right here because we watch you so much.
- 38:05[SPEAKER_01]: I Listen to you sometime even in a car Feyant my fiance listen to I mean he's the one to introduce me to your platform and then seeing you on clips and everything and other one social proof and stuff
- 38:19[SPEAKER_01]: So to know I'm sitting here, this was nothing but God.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_01]: So thank you because I am getting a lot of aha moments.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_01]: It's almost kind of like standing in that mirror and you're seeing yourself like
- 38:29[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, this is a time for me to listen and apply, instead of just always responding.
- 38:37[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the reason why I'm here.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_01]: So, no, I don't have all the answers.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I think we're a lot of people go wrong as we're, we're on the listen, but we're quick to respond with no.
- 38:49[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm here to listen to say, oh, that's the piece.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_01]: And you're right, because,
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe like I know my hearts in the right place and I know I want to do a design.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_01]: I know I'm passionate about it, but there was a little disconnect.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why I'm here and this is where the blueprint is of what the David Shans.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, thank you.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you're welcome.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I want you to realize that.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_00]: So you said, you're not the David Shans of design,
- 39:26[SPEAKER_00]: who determines that.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_01]: I mean because you do.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_00]: And who am I?
- 39:31[SPEAKER_00]: You're the Oprah of Design.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_01]: Hey, I'll take that.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_00]: But you got to believe it and look like that.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_00]: So it's all most of the issue I think that you're challenged with because the identity and I don't know where it comes from where you begin to shrink in terms of who you are.
- 39:54[SPEAKER_00]: And I think we all, I struggle with it too, so I'm not, like there's gonna be a conversation with both of us, but you need to know, the way this happens faster is, man, I wouldn't believe I'd be here.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_00]: Well, if two years ago you said, oh, definitely be here.
- 40:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's a slight change, but it makes all the difference in who you are.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_00]: You hear what I'm saying, so what I like, I do a podcast on it.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_00]: And last year, it was 1,800 people there.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't say, man, I would have never thought to be 1,800 people.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_00]: I actually spent 5,000.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 40:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'm behind.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_00]: So when 5,000 hits, I'm like, I knew I was going to be there.
- 40:36[SPEAKER_00]: There you go.
- 40:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's a different, it's a, Myron Golden, he said, I don't know if you came up with it, but,
- 40:44[SPEAKER_00]: There's a philosophy that lives with, I'll call, be do have.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_00]: Many of you have to be the person.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_00]: I can do the thing, and they all have it.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_00]: The only thing you're missing is the be.
- 40:57[SPEAKER_00]: You have the skills, you are articulate, you're beautiful, brilliant, you're all this stuff.
- 41:05[SPEAKER_00]: Eventually we just gotta get you to see that.
- 41:07[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, you're absolutely right.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to speak for all interior designers, but I do feel because we have like it and one thing I love about Georgia, the community is so strong here with the network and the community.
- 41:24[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, in Vesfest, look, look what is done, you know, and um, but I think there is times David that there has been some imposter syndrome, of course, and because of it all over you.
- 41:40[SPEAKER_01]: I never went to school for it, it's self-taught.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_01]: And the majority of designers will tell you they'd go through that, or went through that.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_01]: And I can shed my light right now and say, hey, yeah, I've been through that.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_01]: And then you've compared to others, and you know, or your numbers, all of that.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_01]: All of that.
- 41:59[SPEAKER_00]: Go back even further, go back even further.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_00]: a time that maybe you realize that you didn't have it, or you may have not been enough.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_00]: Go back even further, not college.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_00]: Not going to design school, but go back even further.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, so I'll go back and say, never my life, I thought I started into interior design business.
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: You know how really, you know how this really got started?
- 42:26[SPEAKER_01]: Divorce, devastation brought revelation.
- 42:31[SPEAKER_01]: When I couldn't get out of bed, I couldn't sleep, and decided to actually start taking charge of gossip that I got you.
- 42:40[SPEAKER_00]: How long are you married?
- 42:42[SPEAKER_01]: We're married for almost seven years.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_01]: We're really together at 13.
- 42:46[SPEAKER_01]: But, um,
- 42:49[SPEAKER_01]: a marriage can feel like a death, and I think God through God's healing, and I think God to even Max Husband who even asked for forgiveness, and I played a role in my healing.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_00]: What did he need for forgiveness for him?
- 43:05[SPEAKER_01]: For the things he'd done.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_00]: What did he do?
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: um he had an affair with a co-worker and uh had a baby and actually had two actually well once he moved out he ended up uh he had an affair with a co-worker and uh i think eight nine months later she announced she was pregnant
- 43:26[SPEAKER_01]: And I had, I was just kind of picking up my jaw from having to miscarriage myself.
- 43:32[SPEAKER_01]: Less than a year ago.
- 43:34[SPEAKER_01]: So after my miscarriage, I'll say about four months later, he moved out, this was back in Pittsburgh.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_01]: And, um...
- 43:42[SPEAKER_01]: Never my life thought never seen a comment.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_01]: I know that might sound cliche, but ask where I never seen a comment Not that we were perfect, but he was a great guy.
- 43:49[SPEAKER_01]: He didn't show me anything outside of that.
- 43:51[SPEAKER_01]: We had our issues like ups and downs But nothing sort of pointed with a portray it would went that way.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_01]: So he moved out
- 44:01[SPEAKER_01]: I was waiting thinking maybe we'll get back.
- 44:04[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, man, treat me cold.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that's this question.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_00]: How did it make you feel knowing that he had a baby or two babies with someone else?
- 44:17[SPEAKER_00]: But you y'all couldn't have one together.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_01]: Wow, you know, I think there was a few people even asked me after that and said, hey, do you think he wanted a baby?
- 44:28[SPEAKER_01]: And that's why, you know,
- 44:32[SPEAKER_01]: I can honestly say, no, I don't think it was that.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how did you feel knowing that me and this person we tried to have a baby, we couldn't, but this other woman, he could have a baby with.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I was devastating.
- 44:46[SPEAKER_01]: Devastating, that was, I don't know which blow was harder, losing or seeing your husband play house with someone else.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't make you feel like,
- 45:01[SPEAKER_01]: What did I do wrong?
- 45:02[SPEAKER_01]: Where I went wrong?
- 45:04[SPEAKER_01]: Was it me?
- 45:05[SPEAKER_01]: Question?
- 45:07[SPEAKER_01]: And of course you got your community.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it wasn't you, Brandy, it wasn't you.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_01]: But I had some sure ahead, some part the plan it.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but you know, like you weren't enough.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure at one point, I'm sure at one point.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure when Tom realized later on, I'll say about maybe six years later when he asked for forgiveness, I had that he said, I know you have a lot of questions.
- 45:30[SPEAKER_01]: Oh yeah, and we talked on the phone for almost four and a half hours.
- 45:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll say, I believe in my heart, he gave me his best answers of why he did what it was.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, um, but I'm also open to say, I'm not perfect and I'm sure there's could have been things I could have done better for sure.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_00]: Take me back.
- 45:54[SPEAKER_00]: A little further, maybe childhood, teenage childhood.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_00]: You ever remember a time where you felt maybe you're inferior or maybe you just, I don't know, did you feel ugly growing up?
- 46:11[SPEAKER_00]: I know I did, you know, I was younger, but, um, go back really, like really, um, I don't
- 46:24[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, actually no, I'm not even joking, I'm, I'll be honest.
- 46:28[SPEAKER_01]: No, and I know people say I'll be honest a lot, I'm honest, I've never had a confident tissue like, um,
- 46:37[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I think I'm ugly, low self-esteem.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you, Jesus.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_01]: That is one thing I didn't have to go through.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure.
- 46:43[SPEAKER_01]: I was always blessed when I was younger and the kids would be like, man, what is your mom putting in the milk?
- 46:48[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I used to hear all that type of stuff when I was growing up, but I never, I never really grew up feeling ugly or anything like that.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_01]: David and I do believe, now I'm granted, I wasn't raised by the huggstables, but I do believe how your race has a outcome of how you show up as you get older, even in your marriage, everything.
- 47:08[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll say, no, not a confidence, but of course I'm a woman, as you get older, you gain weight, you do things.
- 47:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I did gain a lot of weight after my ex-husband.
- 47:22[SPEAKER_01]: I lost.
- 47:23[SPEAKER_01]: I just lost.
- 47:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm down to I'm at six pounds away from my hundred pound weight loss.
- 47:28[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, congratulations.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, thank you.
- 47:29[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, got my stuff together.
- 47:32[SPEAKER_01]: And um, but just to answer that question going back, uh, not I never really had a confidence booster.
- 47:38[SPEAKER_01]: Even to this day, even when I was heavier, I still didn't.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_01]: I just knew I needed to lose weight, but I never said, oh man, I'm so ugly or anything like that.
- 47:47[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't ever feel like that, but also it was never vain either, like, oh, darling, look at me.
- 47:52[SPEAKER_01]: But, uh, but no, I've always been like, uh, outgoing confidence type person.
- 47:59[SPEAKER_01]: Um, but can I even step back, uh, step in even a little forward?
- 48:05[SPEAKER_01]: Please.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_01]: Um, just a touch back on and this is not to shame acts husband or anything like that, uh, because, uh, we're cordial now and, uh, we're friends, um, not friends like, hey, but you know, just, we're cordial now.
- 48:20[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and I wish him a lot of best.
- 48:22[SPEAKER_01]: But I will say,
- 48:24[SPEAKER_01]: Everybody's like, man, Brandy, I always kept my room organized, even as a teenager, so when people came to my homes and as an adult, they're like, man, you're also like a magazine, but David, I never in my life thought I started an interior design.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_01]: I've always loved it.
- 48:38[SPEAKER_01]: Even in high school, my teacher used to be like, people used to always play cards and little stuff.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_01]: I was always looking at home, design books, home and gardens, and it's so funny because someone just
- 48:51[SPEAKER_01]: I guess those home and garden books really paid off as they had well, so some people really remembered that back in time in high school.
- 48:59[SPEAKER_01]: But I do believe that devastation brought revelation with me because when I relocated to Georgia and I was working out a job here, I got laid off, I was a contractor, it's just still figuring out.
- 49:11[SPEAKER_01]: I think I was, I think I was when I moved here, I was still in a survival mood of healing and still survival.
- 49:19[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I start this is before content was content on social media and I was putting up before and afters.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I went on a date with a guy, didn't work out, and I mean, him actually just became cool.
- 49:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know he was my first client.
- 49:33[SPEAKER_01]: He said, can you help me with my office?
- 49:34[SPEAKER_01]: And I thought he was just all he's saying is for me to come over his house or something.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_01]: So I went over there and he has a very successful like 10 business for cars and stuff.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_01]: Like that.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_01]: He trains now and he was telling me he said no.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_01]: So he was like, I put it's office together.
- 49:50[SPEAKER_01]: Even a dining room.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_01]: He was like, man, it's look nice.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_01]: Here's how much you want.
- 49:53[SPEAKER_01]: David, I charge him $600.
- 49:54[SPEAKER_01]: He said,
- 49:56[SPEAKER_01]: That's all you want.
- 49:57[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, well, yeah, he was like, no.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_01]: And I believe he gave me a thousand.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 50:01[SPEAKER_01]: That was grand much more.
- 50:02[SPEAKER_01]: But at that time, when you're a nude design, you'll take anybody with a post.
- 50:06[SPEAKER_01]: So it's just like, you know, but he gave me that opportunity.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_01]: And I put the before and after up.
- 50:12[SPEAKER_01]: and that's how it started.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_01]: So I start helping a few people out low hair in there.
- 50:16[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, wait a minute, I think I'm one of something.
- 50:18[SPEAKER_01]: Then I start catching attention of some reality stars.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_01]: And that's saying those reality stories, you know, it brought me, but it definitely brought a new network.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_01]: And then when I, when my,
- 50:30[SPEAKER_01]: Work that shown on Bravo through the the reality show.
- 50:35[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, man I was pretty cool and then I start leaning and didn't content helped out Then word of mouth.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_01]: So my business is really off a word of mouth and a lot of repeat customers This goes back to the phases.
- 50:46[SPEAKER_01]: So Brandy we got that extra 25,000 now We're ready to do the upstairs.
- 50:51[SPEAKER_01]: So that's where that comes in at so
- 50:55[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of aha moments like I wish you can just see my brain going off and sat right now with you because it's just like
- 51:03[SPEAKER_01]: You're so right, and it's connecting the dots and you're so good.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_01]: I asked him out.
- 51:06[SPEAKER_01]: He's really good.
- 51:07[SPEAKER_01]: Connected the dot questions.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, Oprah.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_01]: But no, that that is really good.
- 51:12[SPEAKER_01]: So also, is it okay?
- 51:16[SPEAKER_01]: I present my book to you and just tell you.
- 51:18[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, so thank you.
- 51:20[SPEAKER_01]: So this is my first book.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_01]: This brings me to the book of the well-designed life.
- 51:27[SPEAKER_01]: And my goal to this book was to give people tips who couldn't afford, who can't afford, and probably will for it later on, and the terror designer.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_01]: Not every interior designer starts off at $10,000 or $20,000.
- 51:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I wanted to put this in a book to give people tips of just how to keep their house clean, organization, just to give them inspiration to say, hey.
- 51:50[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you may not have an interior designer, but here's a little packing list in here and some encouragement because the way you keep your house is a mental clarity and it definitely dictates how you move every day.
- 52:03[SPEAKER_01]: So this is the book it's on Amazon and I try to make it very affordable.
- 52:07[SPEAKER_01]: My heartback is 1499, I believe, and the soft book is 999.
- 52:14[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to duplicate it into Autoable.
- 52:18[SPEAKER_01]: Well, this is my book and this is for you.
- 52:20[SPEAKER_01]: That's a gift to you and I wish you a little something in there so uh.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's a beautiful book and I'll look to your work and it looks amazing and I want to say thank you.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
- 52:32[SPEAKER_00]: You're welcome.
- 52:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think it's a great conversation and I think it's going to help a lot of people.
- 52:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 52:40[SPEAKER_00]: And just that the only thing I'll leave with is the faster you realize that you are
- 52:48[SPEAKER_00]: and not a luxury, not anything that you do like you.
- 52:50[SPEAKER_00]: Who's, who's it like the best designer in Atlanta?
- 52:55[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, that's a great question.
- 52:59[SPEAKER_01]: Like who's popular or who's the best?
- 53:01[SPEAKER_00]: Who, who would you say is like number one designer in Atlanta?
- 53:06[SPEAKER_00]: Interior.
- 53:07[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, man, that's, I don't know everybody, but from the community I know.
- 53:13[SPEAKER_00]: My name's Brandy.
- 53:14[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, there you go.
- 53:17[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, that's horrible.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_00]: Her name's Brandy.
- 53:20[SPEAKER_01]: That's horrible.
- 53:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_01]: Man.
- 53:24[SPEAKER_00]: That's the only thing I want to leave you with.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_00]: Her name's Brandy.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_01]: Why didn't go to me first?
- 53:48[SPEAKER_01]: This is me.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_00]: There we go.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_00]: Mission accomplished today is the day that your life changes forever.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_00]: So go on me, great.
- 53:59[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much.
- 54:02[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't even, man, I didn't plan on crying.
- 54:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so sorry.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, thank you.
- 54:17[SPEAKER_01]: Man, that uh, thank you so much.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I didn't, uh, and I was really sitting here thinking, well, I don't know everybody and skipped over me.
- 54:32[SPEAKER_01]: And a lot of people do that.
- 54:34[SPEAKER_01]: We do that, and you know, that was like, who are you?
- 54:39[SPEAKER_01]: Mastermind, man.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_01]: That was good.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, a little bit of a podcast.
- 54:44[SPEAKER_01]: No, that is, um,
- 54:47[SPEAKER_01]: May I ask you a honest question?
- 54:48[SPEAKER_01]: Sure.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_01]: What do you see when you scope my Instagram, see the book, and you see me?
- 55:01[SPEAKER_01]: What do you see?
- 55:02[SPEAKER_00]: aesthetically, put together, you have an incredible eye.
- 55:08[SPEAKER_00]: Professional.
- 55:11[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I see.
- 55:13[SPEAKER_01]: Awesome.
- 55:15[SPEAKER_00]: So if we can get behind all of that, I see a scared little girl shows up while her doesn't really understand her own superpower.
- 55:31[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not a uncommon thing, we all do, I mean, I, I, for sure have a level at myself.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_00]: That's why I can recognize it.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 55:40[SPEAKER_01]: Not at all.
- 55:40[SPEAKER_00]: This episode isn't for you, it was for me.
- 55:43[SPEAKER_00]: I can see bits of myself through me talking to you.
- 55:48[SPEAKER_00]: So everything's another change for you.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_01]: I really appreciate that.
- 55:57[SPEAKER_01]: I needed this.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_01]: And like I said, never thought I'd be here in the hot seat a year ago.
- 56:06[SPEAKER_01]: devastation brings revelation.
- 56:07[SPEAKER_01]: And another thing I am, and if I can leave with this and say to you, thank you, I receive it.
- 56:16[SPEAKER_01]: Well said, well connected, the dots, and I got some work to do.
- 56:22[SPEAKER_01]: And, um, and I'm learning that when you take your time, you go faster.
- 56:27[SPEAKER_00]: For sure.
- 56:29[SPEAKER_00]: Cool.
- 56:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 56:30[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for coming.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for having me.
