Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Have we found the next leaky building saga?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Two questions for you this morning if you're buying or
- 0:02Speaker 1: if you have recently bought a property. One, did you
- 0:05Speaker 1: get a pre-purchase inspection done? And two, did that person
- 0:08Speaker 1: have a qualification? Remember leaky buildings? How could you forget?
- 0:12Speaker 1: There are builders and surveyors out there who reckon we
- 0:14Speaker 1: are sitting on another leaky building saga right now. Good
- 0:18Speaker 1: piece about this in the Herald at the weekend. New builds,
- 0:20Speaker 1: builds less than 10 years old, failing, looks spick and
- 0:23Speaker 1: span on the inside, looks nice, there's a nice kitchen,
- 0:26Speaker 1: there's oak flooring underneath. Timber's damp, there's mould. Water getting
- 0:31Speaker 1: inside the walls of houses that are pretty new. Now,
- 0:33Speaker 1: I don't know about you, but when somebody builds a
- 0:35Speaker 1: house or an apartment, it should keep water out. You know?
- 0:40Speaker 1: It's pretty basic. I've spoken to some builders and some
- 0:42Speaker 1: tradies about this, and they are worried too. The bad
- 0:46Speaker 1: news for anyone who may have got a building inspection
- 0:50Speaker 1: is that you don't actually need a qualification. You do
- 0:53Speaker 1: not even need insurance. You do not need a licence.
- 0:57Speaker 1: And the thing about these types of stories is that
- 1:00Speaker 1: it's mostly anecdotal. You know, how widespread is this problem?
- 1:04Speaker 1: Is it 1% of new builds? Is it 20% of
- 1:06Speaker 1: new builds? You don't know what you don't know. And
- 1:10Speaker 1: by the time you find out, your walls are wet
- 1:12Speaker 1: and they're filled with mould.
