- 0:00Speaker 1: This episode contains content that may be disturbing to some listeners.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Please check the show notes for more information.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Disgraceland is a production of Double Elvis. The stories about
- 0:17Speaker 2: Lil Kim are insane. She lived on the streets when
- 0:22Speaker 2: she was fourteen to escape her abusive father. She survived
- 0:26Speaker 2: the shootout when her beef with a fellow rap star
- 0:28Speaker 2: lit up a Manhattan radio station. She committed perjury to
- 0:32Speaker 2: save her crew from prison time, and they didn't return
- 0:35Speaker 2: the favor. She straddled the sex positivity movement with lyrics
- 0:39Speaker 2: that reinvented what it meant to be a woman in
- 0:41Speaker 2: hip hop. Her music counted the diamonds in her rings
- 0:45Speaker 2: and told the world that's how many times she wanted
- 0:47Speaker 2: to finish. She's a walking quote unquote explicit content sticker
- 0:51Speaker 2: that paved the way for songs like Cardi B and
- 0:54Speaker 2: Meghan the Stallion's Watt. Even twenty five years after Little
- 0:58Speaker 2: Kim's solo debut, few rappers expose their sexuality like she can,
- 1:04Speaker 2: because Lil Kim makes filthy and great music. Unlike that
- 1:09Speaker 2: loop I've played for you at the top of the
- 1:11Speaker 2: show that wasn't great music, that was a preset loop
- 1:15Speaker 2: for my Melotron called you Better Get Bad Jack MK.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Two.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I played you that clip because I can't afford the
- 1:23Speaker 2: rights to Stutter by Joe featuring Mystical And why would
- 1:27Speaker 2: I play you that specific slice of two times in
- 1:30Speaker 2: R and B Cheese?
- 1:31Speaker 1: Could I afford it?
- 1:33Speaker 2: Because that was the number one song in America on
- 1:36Speaker 2: February twenty fifth, two thousand and one, And that was
- 1:39Speaker 2: the day that would lead Little Kim down a path
- 1:41Speaker 2: of perjury.
- 1:43Speaker 1: In prison time.
- 1:45Speaker 2: On this episode, shootouts explicit content, sex, positivity, loyalty.
- 1:50Speaker 1: In the land of the Mafia, in Lil.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Kim, I'm Jake Brennan, and this this disgraceland Ingrid Rivera
- 2:27Speaker 2: struggled to make sense of the sweaty mass pulsing in
- 2:30Speaker 2: front of her, hips grinding bears, spilling, a blur of
- 2:34Speaker 2: flesh with arms and legs poking out. Somewhere inside that
- 2:38Speaker 2: mess was Ingrid's gift. She had to fish it out.
- 2:42Speaker 2: She elbowed her way through the throng of people and
- 2:44Speaker 2: the souls of HERI stiletto stuck to the nightclose floor.
- 2:47Speaker 2: The flowers. Where were those goddamn flowers? Ingrid's mission was straightforward,
- 2:53Speaker 2: find the bouquet she walked in with, don't get distracted
- 2:56Speaker 2: by Y Klaus Jean and Missy Elliott chatting in the corner,
- 3:00Speaker 2: any and all romantic advances, and then make a special delivery.
- 3:04Speaker 2: It was a simple task if you weren't flying high
- 3:06Speaker 2: on cocktails. But Ingrid reached cruising altitude hours ago, and
- 3:11Speaker 2: now the skies were looking murky. Under no circumstances could
- 3:15Speaker 2: she get distracted. Ingrid's bouquet had to go straight into
- 3:18Speaker 2: the arms of the Birthday Girl aka Ingrid's Idyl aka
- 3:22Speaker 2: Queen b aka Lil Kim. The party at Spotlight Live
- 3:29Speaker 2: that evening, August third, two thousand and eight was for
- 3:32Speaker 2: Little Kim's thirty third birthday. The club itself was open
- 3:35Speaker 2: to the public all night long. Fans knew they could
- 3:38Speaker 2: find Kim inside, big fans like Ingrid, who came bearing gifts.
- 3:42Speaker 2: She brought a okay worthy of a queen into the
- 3:44Speaker 2: Manhattan club that night. A bar keep stashed it away.
- 3:48Speaker 2: When Ingrid couldn't find the birthday Girl, and now Ingrid
- 3:51Speaker 2: couldn't find that bouquet, she couldn't even find her friends.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Ingrid turned her head to the left the room swayed
- 3:58Speaker 2: to the right. There had to be closet or a
- 4:00Speaker 2: VIP lounge. She didn't know about, some secret stash space
- 4:04Speaker 2: removed from the chaos. Ingrid opened the first door she
- 4:07Speaker 2: found and staggered inside urinals and bathroom stalls. Definitely not storage.
- 4:12Speaker 2: But there was a manager in that room who was
- 4:14Speaker 2: happy to show Ingrid the right door, the door that
- 4:16Speaker 2: led to the street. It was almost three am. She
- 4:20Speaker 2: was a liability stumbling around in those stilettos. The manager
- 4:23Speaker 2: wasn't there to babysit. Time to give up and go home,
- 4:26Speaker 2: so Ingrid was tossed outside. Another employee from the club disagreed.
- 4:31Speaker 2: The barkeep, who had stowed away her bouquet earlier, approached
- 4:34Speaker 2: Ingrid on the street. He could get her back inside
- 4:36Speaker 2: and help her make that special delivery. He even had
- 4:39Speaker 2: access to the club's VIP penthouse. He'd get Ingrid's flowers
- 4:42Speaker 2: and bring her right to the roof. That's probably where
- 4:45Speaker 2: little Kin was camped out for the evening. All she
- 4:48Speaker 2: needed to do was joined him in the freight elevator.
- 4:56Speaker 2: He was gonna fuck her cousin, fuck her Luggo was
- 4:59Speaker 2: nothing like their relationship, didn't mean shit to him like
- 5:02Speaker 2: it was normal to hoe around with your girl's family.
- 5:05Speaker 2: That motherfucker, Biggie Small's is gonna fuck her cousin. Little
- 5:11Speaker 2: Kim tried to get comfortable in her chair at the
- 5:13Speaker 2: recording studio. She couldn't bring herself to make eye contact
- 5:16Speaker 2: with her lover. She couldn't bring herself to do much
- 5:18Speaker 2: of anything. So what if Usher needed verses for a song?
- 5:21Speaker 2: Usher could wait. Kim was in no mood to lay
- 5:24Speaker 2: down bars, not after what she just learned. Her cousin
- 5:27Speaker 2: wanted four hundred dollars for the deed. What you gonna
- 5:30Speaker 2: do for four hundred dollars, Biggie asked. Kim shuddered at
- 5:33Speaker 2: the thought, not at the thought of the sex. She
- 5:36Speaker 2: could rap about sex on that long. She'd tell you
- 5:38Speaker 2: where to shove it, lick it, eat it, kiss it,
- 5:41Speaker 2: stroke it, whatever wherever. Little Kim straddled the sex positivity
- 5:45Speaker 2: movement in the nineties, but even she had her limit.
- 5:47Speaker 2: She drew the line at disloyalty. No boyfriend of Little
- 5:50Speaker 2: Kim was going to double timer with her own family,
- 5:53Speaker 2: not even rap royalty like the notorious Big Because Little
- 5:56Speaker 2: Kim was rap royalty too. Cross Queen bee and Shell,
- 6:00Speaker 2: I have your head served on a platinum record. She
- 6:02Speaker 2: could have reached across the room and beheaded Biggie herself
- 6:05Speaker 2: with the idea tickled her. Biggie didn't even need to
- 6:08Speaker 2: be here. That trader just wanted to hover nearby as
- 6:10Speaker 2: if Kim needed help cranking out lyrics. She had her verses.
- 6:14Speaker 2: She was good, but she wasn't feeling good on the inside. Unfaithful, motherfucker,
- 6:19Speaker 2: ungrateful motherfucker. If you went worshiping at the altar, little Kim,
- 6:22Speaker 2: she don't need it. Usher still needed those verses, though,
- 6:27Speaker 2: Biggie would make sure he got them immediately. He ordered
- 6:31Speaker 2: Kim into the hallway to speak at private. She glared
- 6:34Speaker 2: up at him and waited for the lecture. Biggie told
- 6:36Speaker 2: her to grow a pair and spit her bars already
- 6:39Speaker 2: he wanted bars huh, some vicious rhymes to send shivers
- 6:42Speaker 2: down his spine. She had plenty of those stored up
- 6:44Speaker 2: just for him. Kim fired off, told Biggie to keep
- 6:48Speaker 2: it in his pants and keep his guard up. She
- 6:50Speaker 2: had the higher ground and there was no way she
- 6:52Speaker 2: was going to give up this stuff. Biggie reached for
- 6:54Speaker 2: his strap. He wrapped his hand around the handle of
- 6:57Speaker 2: his pistol. Kim froze Biggie was and asking her to
- 7:00Speaker 2: record the verses. He was telling her if she had
- 7:03Speaker 2: a problem with that, she could catch a bullet, just
- 7:05Speaker 2: like anyone else. Kim stormed back into the studio. She
- 7:10Speaker 2: spit out her verses like venom. So this was love
- 7:13Speaker 2: to command to protect you, and they'll threaten you anyway,
- 7:16Speaker 2: just like her father did to her mother, Just like
- 7:18Speaker 2: Biggie did to little Kim. It was the same old pattern,
- 7:24Speaker 2: violence always looming around every corner, even when Kim believed
- 7:28Speaker 2: she was around people she could trust. Her father's fist
- 7:31Speaker 2: pushed her mother out of their family when Kim was eight.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Back then, she was just Kimberly Jones, daughter of a
- 7:37Speaker 2: military man who believed to brute force. One time, her
- 7:41Speaker 2: father socked her mother in the face and told friends
- 7:43Speaker 2: that her two black eyes were because she just fell down.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Kim's mother would rather live out of the trunk of
- 7:48Speaker 2: a car than fall down again, so that's exactly what
- 7:51Speaker 2: she did. Kim did the same thing when she was fourteen.
- 7:55Speaker 2: She picked the streets of Brooklyn over her father's verbal
- 7:57Speaker 2: and physical abuse, which was handed.
- 7:59Speaker 1: Down to her.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Like family heirloom, men could be volatile. Kim learned that
- 8:04Speaker 2: lesson early, but they could also be tamed, and Little
- 8:07Speaker 2: Kim was a regular snake charmer. She adapted quickly on
- 8:14Speaker 2: the streets at ved style. She had a boyfriend, you
- 8:17Speaker 2: had food and protection, and if you could have great sex,
- 8:20Speaker 2: you had yourself. A boyfriend had no time flat. Even
- 8:22Speaker 2: if no money was exchanged. Sex was currency in that sense,
- 8:28Speaker 2: Little Kim was rich, and the notorious Big knew he
- 8:32Speaker 2: could make her even richer. When Biggie first met Kim
- 8:35Speaker 2: on Fulton Street, she seemed too cute to rap. At
- 8:39Speaker 2: seventeen years old and four foot eleven, she didn't look
- 8:41Speaker 2: like your average rap star, but Little Kim was sicker
- 8:44Speaker 2: than your average She was sexier too. Turns out Kim
- 8:48Speaker 2: could rap fast and furious, foaming at the mouth, just
- 8:51Speaker 2: like Biggie.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Didn't matter, He insisted.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Men didn't want to hear hard truth coming from a
- 8:55Speaker 2: petite little thing for Brooklyn. They wanted a sex kitt
- 8:58Speaker 2: and spit in rhymes about swallowing a goddess could knock
- 9:01Speaker 2: him on to his knees every time she mentioned her
- 9:02Speaker 2: immaculate pussy which in Little Kim's world, was like every
- 9:06Speaker 2: thirty seconds. Biggie started Kim as a member of Junior Mafia,
- 9:10Speaker 2: a hip hop group of his own creation. Her verses
- 9:13Speaker 2: peppered their nineteen ninety five debut Conspiracy with foul mouth sexuality.
- 9:18Speaker 2: She didn't just tell them to put their face between
- 9:20Speaker 2: her thighs. She told them she'd count dollar bills while
- 9:22Speaker 2: her neck diar gushed down their throats. It was clear
- 9:26Speaker 2: Little Kim needed her own album to detail her own
- 9:29Speaker 2: sexcapades with their own verses. Enough of people crediting Biggie
- 9:33Speaker 2: for her hard work, Little Kim had her own ideas
- 9:36Speaker 2: about her debut solo album. She craved something so explicit
- 9:40Speaker 2: it would make faithful men sweat, something so enticing it
- 9:44Speaker 2: could make tail chasing bachelor's dream about marriage and baby carriages.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Something hardcore. Little Kim took too much.
- 10:18Speaker 1: This time.
- 10:19Speaker 2: She was doubled over on the stretcher. Her stomach spastened,
- 10:22Speaker 2: It squelched and squirmed like a rabid animal. She tried
- 10:26Speaker 2: to soothe herself. You know who you are, you little
- 10:29Speaker 2: Kim bitch. Nothing was too freaky for her. She could
- 10:31Speaker 2: take anything, wink wink, even a plastic tube shoved down
- 10:35Speaker 2: her throat. A paramedic pushed the tube through Little Kim's
- 10:38Speaker 2: nose and down her windpipe. He coaxed it into her stomach.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Then he switched on the suction fluid pumped through the tube.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Little Kim swallowed more than she could handle tonight, leaders
- 10:49Speaker 2: more so much that the liquid was eating away at
- 10:51Speaker 2: the lining of her stomach. Not drugs, not alcohol, Little
- 10:55Speaker 2: Kim needed her stomach pumped to remove all the Okay,
- 11:00Speaker 2: I'm gonna come right out and say it. There's no
- 11:02Speaker 2: way Little Kim consumed so much seamen that she needed
- 11:06Speaker 2: her stomach pumped. It doesn't even contain an active ingredient
- 11:09Speaker 2: that could hurt your internal organs. But I digress. The
- 11:12Speaker 2: urban legend that Little Kim needed to have come pumped
- 11:15Speaker 2: out of her in a medical capacity is one hundred
- 11:18Speaker 2: percent absurd, but that never stopped anyone from repeating it.
- 11:22Speaker 2: The myth was spread in high school hallways, record stores,
- 11:25Speaker 2: online message boards. Some versions added new details little Kim
- 11:28Speaker 2: collapsed on stage mid performance, that her flame with Biggie
- 11:32Speaker 2: was to blame. One version involved an elephant, which, come on, seriously,
- 11:37Speaker 2: you could speculate that Kim's nasty bars inspired such a
- 11:40Speaker 2: vulgar rumor untrue. This fable dated back to the nineteen seventies,
- 11:44Speaker 2: when people told the same story about Rod Stewart or
- 11:46Speaker 2: David Bowie. Britney Spears was featured in future versions. Gross
- 11:50Speaker 2: as it was, the stomach pump story was an urban
- 11:53Speaker 2: legend made for legends. It was a legend fit for
- 11:56Speaker 2: a queen, and Little Kim was quickly becoming just that.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Her debut album, Hardcore Sucked and Fucked its way to
- 12:06Speaker 2: number eleven on the Billboard two hundred and nineteen ninety six.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Listeners were seduced by Little kim sticky depictions of what
- 12:11Speaker 2: she could do to you and what she demanded you
- 12:13Speaker 2: do for her. Her rhymes about throwing lips on certain
- 12:17Speaker 2: body parts seduced Americans into buying one point five million copies.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And just in case anyone struggled to picture the pornographic scenes,
- 12:24Speaker 2: Little Kim described the album art included a photo.
- 12:27Speaker 1: To stimulate their imagination.
- 12:29Speaker 2: It's a snap of Kim squatting on the floor in
- 12:31Speaker 2: a cheetah print bikini, legs spread feathered robe, grazing her
- 12:35Speaker 2: bare skin bedroomise locked a camera level the Notorious Big
- 12:40Speaker 2: hand picked the photo from the album photo shoot. It
- 12:43Speaker 2: was one of his last tips for his lover and
- 12:44Speaker 2: protegee before he was assassinated just months later in the
- 12:47Speaker 2: spring of nineteen ninety seven. His death was proof that
- 12:51Speaker 2: the East Coast, West Coast beef and mainstream hip hop
- 12:54Speaker 2: had gone too far, But Biggie's absence was also proof
- 12:58Speaker 2: that Little Kim was nobody's pupp The Queen Bee could
- 13:01Speaker 2: rule on her own just fine. Kim loved Biggie fiercely,
- 13:04Speaker 2: but that didn't mean she needed him to sustain her career.
- 13:07Speaker 2: She countered her coins while Hardcore went platinum and then
- 13:10Speaker 2: double platinum. Her following record, The Notorious Kim, flew off
- 13:15Speaker 2: the shelves even faster. In two thousand, it was a
- 13:18Speaker 2: new century, a new era for women in rap music.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Dudes weren't the only ones bragging about their platinum plaques
- 13:23Speaker 2: and designer digs. Kim could afford to drape herself with
- 13:26Speaker 2: clothes from any of the brand she name dropped in
- 13:28Speaker 2: her songs Chanelle to Versace. She had so much cash
- 13:32Speaker 2: as she had a favorite kind of fur. It's chinchilla.
- 13:35Speaker 2: By the way, she kept her closet full of fur
- 13:37Speaker 2: coats for modest days, a fur bikini for everything else.
- 13:40Speaker 2: She wore a thirty carrot diamond belly chain. Pasties in
- 13:44Speaker 2: every shade, especially lavender let the one that caused Diana
- 13:46Speaker 2: Ross to jiggle Kim's exposed breast at the MTV Video
- 13:49Speaker 2: Music Awards in.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Nineteen ninety nine.
- 13:51Speaker 2: She melded sex, style and songwriting into one persona lo
- 13:56Speaker 2: Kim would tell you to count the diamonds and her
- 13:58Speaker 2: rings and then demand to give it the same number
- 14:00Speaker 2: orgasms in one breath. Little Kim wasn't the first woman
- 14:05Speaker 2: to rap. She wasn't even the first woman to rap
- 14:07Speaker 2: about sex, but she was the first woman to tell
- 14:09Speaker 2: you she was down to fuck in explicit terms, just
- 14:12Speaker 2: like one of the men not have sex fuck. In
- 14:17Speaker 2: the mid nineteen nineties, there was another woman in hip
- 14:19Speaker 2: hop spelling out her desires, A certified fox. She put
- 14:23Speaker 2: her pussy right in the title of her debut album,
- 14:25Speaker 2: called it Lil Nana. It dropped one week after Hardcore,
- 14:29Speaker 2: and she went by the name of Foxy Brown. No
- 14:34Speaker 2: one knew where Little Kim's feued with Foxy Brown came from.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Didn't matter.
- 14:38Speaker 2: All hip hop fame came with a beef, and Little
- 14:41Speaker 2: Kim beef with Foxy Brown like she was at a steakhouse.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Their rivalry divided mainstream hip hop into two sides. Kim
- 14:48Speaker 2: had Junior Mafia behind her, Foxy Brown had Murder Unit.
- 14:52Speaker 2: As far as Kim was concerned, Junior Mafia was the
- 14:55Speaker 2: winning team because in the Mafia's land, loyalty does everything.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Brown could have shared that loyalty was Kim. They were
- 15:02Speaker 2: even supposed to make an album together. They were gonna
- 15:04Speaker 2: call it Thelma and Louise. But when you want to
- 15:07Speaker 2: be the Queen Bee but you can't be, people get mad.
- 15:11Speaker 2: At least that's how Kim saw it. Both women wounded
- 15:17Speaker 2: each other with their worldplay. Puffy even did some Kim's bidding.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Puffy and Kim hopped on a Little Ceesar's track play
- 15:23Speaker 2: Around in nineteen ninety nine, in which Puffy demanded that
- 15:25Speaker 2: a Little Kim copycat stopped trying to sound like her.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Kim continued the battle on the notorious k I Am
- 15:30Speaker 2: with a jab that Foxy wasn't a star and even
- 15:33Speaker 2: her label knew it. Foxy fired back on component Noriega's
- 15:36Speaker 2: two thousand album The Reunion. She damned the notorious k
- 15:39Speaker 2: I Am to the bottom of the bargain. Pin said
- 15:41Speaker 2: it was lame and weak. Not the woman named names,
- 15:45Speaker 2: but everyone knew who they were talking about. Little Kim
- 15:47Speaker 2: and Foxy Brown were vixens to the hip hop world,
- 15:50Speaker 2: but villains to each other. Kim didn't sweat it. She
- 15:53Speaker 2: knew who wore the pants in this new era of
- 15:55Speaker 2: hip hop? After all, who did the industry call?
- 15:57Speaker 1: When Pink, Christina.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Aguilera and Meyer remade Lady Marmalade for the Mulin Rouge soundtrack,
- 16:03Speaker 2: only one rapper boasted the crossover appeal to hang with
- 16:06Speaker 2: all the mainstream pop girls in two thousand and one.
- 16:09Speaker 2: The song was a half Phony French, half English, all sex,
- 16:12Speaker 2: but somehow nos swears banger. This new Lady Marmalade represented
- 16:16Speaker 2: all things fierce and female about the turn of the century.
- 16:19Speaker 2: It peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot one
- 16:22Speaker 2: hundred and stayed there for five weeks. It remains Little
- 16:25Speaker 2: Kim's best selling single to this day. So while Foxy
- 16:29Speaker 2: Brown talked shit, Kim was busy counting bank figures. And
- 16:33Speaker 2: if Foxy ever wanted to walk the walk and start
- 16:35Speaker 2: a proper fight, Kim would handle it like a real bitch.
- 16:42Speaker 2: When Little Kim rolled up, she rolled deep, Little Cease Larceny,
- 16:47Speaker 2: her bodyguard See Gutta, her manager Damian Butler, they all
- 16:52Speaker 2: trailed behind her, which she burst through the doors of
- 16:54Speaker 2: Hot ninety seven. She had a real treat for the
- 16:56Speaker 2: Manhattan radio station that afternoon. Three members of Junior were
- 17:00Speaker 2: in the building. The group disbanded years ago, literally in
- 17:04Speaker 2: the last century, but their names still carried wade in
- 17:06Speaker 2: the hip hop world. Besides, Little Kim, Lil Sea's and
- 17:10Speaker 2: Larceny were forever bonded by the land of the mafia.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Nothing could separate them. Hot ninety seven stacked its schedule
- 17:17Speaker 2: on that day, February twenty fifth, two thousand and one.
- 17:20Speaker 2: The DJ would interview Kim first, then he'd usher her
- 17:22Speaker 2: out the door and welcome guest number two.
- 17:24Speaker 1: For the afternoon.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Capone, as in one half of Capone in Noriega, the
- 17:29Speaker 2: very same Capone who allowed Foxy Brown to take aim
- 17:32Speaker 2: at Kim on his new album. Foxy's remarks were the
- 17:35Speaker 2: latest jab in their years a long feud. Their beef
- 17:38Speaker 2: was growing stale, tiresome. Kim's crew was ready to bury
- 17:42Speaker 2: it once and for all, even if it meant burying
- 17:45Speaker 2: Foxy Brown's posse. It was a scene straight out of
- 17:50Speaker 2: a Western Kim's crew was exiting the radio station. Capone's
- 17:53Speaker 2: crew stood in the street. Hot ninety seven wasn't big
- 17:56Speaker 2: enough for the two of them. You got beef with, little, Kim,
- 18:00Speaker 2: cried out. A member of Capone's crew answered with a
- 18:03Speaker 2: bullet that was seed gout us que. Kim's bodyguard reached
- 18:06Speaker 2: for the Mac eleven strapped under his vest military grade.
- 18:10Speaker 1: This was war.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Bullets flew across Hudson Street, straight into the walls of
- 18:16Speaker 2: nearby apartments, then straight into a member of murder Unit's crew.
- 18:21Speaker 2: A bullet pierced from the Copone's buddies in the back,
- 18:23Speaker 2: and the impact knocked him onto the sidewalk. He froze
- 18:26Speaker 2: in a growing puddle of his own blood. Pretended he
- 18:28Speaker 2: dropped dead, just in case someone else wanted to plant
- 18:30Speaker 2: a bullet in his brain for good measure. But Kim's
- 18:33Speaker 2: crew wasn't sticking around to survey the damage. She ducked
- 18:36Speaker 2: into her limmle with her entourage and tore us away
- 18:38Speaker 2: from the scene. The man who had been shot stumbled
- 18:41Speaker 2: to his feet his clothes soaked in blood. He staggered
- 18:45Speaker 2: into the street and hailed a cab to the hospital.
- 18:47Speaker 2: And that man lived, so did the beef. Loyalty in
- 18:51Speaker 2: the land of the Mafia was about to be tested.
- 18:58Speaker 1: We'll be right back after this word, word word.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Little Kim scanned the options in front of her, frayed
- 19:11Speaker 2: daisy dukes, a champagne colored gown, a fire red top
- 19:15Speaker 2: embroidered with beating the Queen. A rap could do better.
- 19:19Speaker 2: This was no ordinary day in front of the camera.
- 19:21Speaker 2: Today was a promotional shoot for her new album, Naked Truth.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Where was the fur? The sequin pasties? Hell sent back
- 19:28Speaker 2: the Cheetah primt bikini from the hardcore album Mark. This
- 19:31Speaker 2: racket clothes was a force compared to Kim's wardrobe at home.
- 19:35Speaker 2: She forked over twenty to thirty thousand dollars every month
- 19:37Speaker 2: to keep her style looking fresh. That meant a wig
- 19:40Speaker 2: for every hour of the day, over twenty five hundred
- 19:42Speaker 2: pairs of shoes, a designated room for each designer, three
- 19:45Speaker 2: thousand manicures that decorated her nails. Shredded one hundred dollars bills.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Little Kim literally destroyed money to remind everyone she still
- 19:53Speaker 2: wrapped for fat Stacks, just crunched the numbers for Labella Mafia,
- 19:57Speaker 2: her platinum record from two thousand and three. The outfits
- 20:01Speaker 2: in front of Kim today were not Bella. They were boring.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Queen Bee deserved better, but she didn't have any time
- 20:07Speaker 2: to complain. The clock was ticking, not from the record label,
- 20:12Speaker 2: the clock from the FEDCE. Lil Kim was going to jail.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Kim didn't fire a gun that day outside of Hot
- 20:21Speaker 2: ninety seven in two thousand and one, she didn't so
- 20:24Speaker 2: much as swing a fist, but she had another way
- 20:26Speaker 2: of backing up her crew. She used the same lips
- 20:29Speaker 2: to put other wrappers on blasts. Lil Kim lied under
- 20:33Speaker 2: oath repeatedly in two thousand and one. In two thousand
- 20:36Speaker 2: and three, she testified that her manager, Damien Butler, wasn't
- 20:40Speaker 2: at the scene of the shootout. Security footage from Hot
- 20:43Speaker 2: ninety seven said otherwise. A tape showed him standing beside
- 20:47Speaker 2: her at the station before and during the shooting. Strike one.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Then Damien pulled a gun and fired at Component's crew
- 20:54Speaker 2: Strike two. There was another lie. Kim said she didn't
- 20:57Speaker 2: know Sigutta, her own bodyguard. Strike three, you know You're out.
- 21:02Speaker 2: In March in two thousand and five, Little Kim was
- 21:05Speaker 2: convicted of lying to a grand jury and three counts
- 21:07Speaker 2: of conspiracy. The security tapes from Hot ninety seven alone
- 21:11Speaker 2: could have locked her up, but it got worse when
- 21:13Speaker 2: her crew took the stand. Damian Butler and See Gotta
- 21:16Speaker 2: owned up to everything completed guilty. Larsen's accurate account as
- 21:20Speaker 2: an eyewitness shattered Kim's statement. So did Little Cease's testimony.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Little Cease claimed he had no choice since he was subpoenaed.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Bullshit.
- 21:29Speaker 2: You always had a choice. Kim had a choice right
- 21:32Speaker 2: either tell the truth, damn or crew er lie your
- 21:34Speaker 2: ass off and give them a chance of freedom.
- 21:37Speaker 1: She chose wrong.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Now all her decisions revolved around finishing the naked truth
- 21:41Speaker 2: before her prison sentence. She had three days until she
- 21:44Speaker 2: traded those designer clothes for an orange jumpsuit or whatever
- 21:47Speaker 2: women wore at prison camps. The judge assigned Kim the
- 21:52Speaker 2: same destination as Martha Stewart. The court argued that Kim
- 21:55Speaker 2: and Martha Stewart were stuck in the same boat.
- 21:58Speaker 1: That was a riot. One woman was a.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Mild mannered homemaker guiding women toward their best domestic lives.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Then the other was the patron saint of sinners rap,
- 22:06Speaker 2: but they were both liars inside her trading and perjury
- 22:09Speaker 2: were just two different forms of dishonesty, and the judge
- 22:11Speaker 2: wanted Kim's sentence to mirror Martha's time in prison so
- 22:14Speaker 2: no one could cry discrimination. But Martha got five months
- 22:17Speaker 2: at a prison camp and Kim got a year and
- 22:19Speaker 2: a day. So much for keeping things. Even Kim knew
- 22:23Speaker 2: what she really was, she was an example the Feds
- 22:26Speaker 2: could point to when they needed to demonstrate what happened
- 22:28Speaker 2: to rappers who stepped out of line. Her trial was
- 22:31Speaker 2: just another battle in the government's war on hip hop.
- 22:34Speaker 2: They indicted Kim for her music, not her lies. She
- 22:39Speaker 2: used her new album to make those politics loud and clear.
- 22:42Speaker 2: And the Naked Truth had balls and stripped away the bullshit,
- 22:46Speaker 2: kept it body, sneered its snitches, boasted its allegiance to
- 22:49Speaker 2: the bedside. And if he still wanted to spread rumors
- 22:52Speaker 2: that Little Kim was dead, broke or sniff and coke,
- 22:54Speaker 2: she had a specific message for you.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Shut up, bitch.
- 22:58Speaker 2: The Naked Truth even condemed Junior Mafia and anyone who
- 23:01Speaker 2: was still riding with him. In that chapter, Little Kim's
- 23:04Speaker 2: career was through. It was two thousand and five, for
- 23:06Speaker 2: Christ's sakes, The nineties were long gone, and so it
- 23:09Speaker 2: was Kim's trust. She could hear the inmates calling.
- 23:15Speaker 1: To her from where she sat on her bus.
- 23:18Speaker 2: They banged on the slittered windows and their prison cells.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Fists on glass rumbled like an earthquake. They were sending
- 23:24Speaker 2: a message, We've got your back. Her time was up.
- 23:28Speaker 2: No more sitting lovely and popping don Pe in the club,
- 23:31Speaker 2: No more three thousand dollars manicures, no more NonStop album hustle.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Little Kim's prison sentence began today, September nineteenth, two thousand
- 23:40Speaker 2: and five. Kim sent to decoy out of the bus first,
- 23:44Speaker 2: her cousin, also four foot eleven. That didn't fool the prisoners.
- 23:48Speaker 2: They held their clamoring until they saw the real deal.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Fans pressed against the bus door, and there was no
- 23:55Speaker 2: turning back now. Kim already tried to turn back the
- 23:59Speaker 2: clock once, and her attorney called the Department of Probations
- 24:02Speaker 2: earlier that morning, requesting to push back her sentence.
- 24:05Speaker 1: No dice.
- 24:06Speaker 2: The department claimed that if Kim wanted an extension so badly,
- 24:09Speaker 2: she should have asked earlier. Kim fought the urge to
- 24:11Speaker 2: clap back. Maybe she would have requested an extension earlier
- 24:15Speaker 2: if she knew where the Feds were actually sending her.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Just days earlier, Kim thought she'd be whisked away to
- 24:20Speaker 2: a low security federal prison camp.
- 24:23Speaker 1: That was all bullshit.
- 24:24Speaker 2: The Feds wanted her at the Philadelphia Federal Detention Center
- 24:27Speaker 2: as if she was the one who fired a gun. Meanwhile,
- 24:30Speaker 2: America's glorified housewife got to frolic through a facility with
- 24:33Speaker 2: low fedss like it was a dinner party. But did
- 24:36Speaker 2: Martha Stewart have dozens of prisoners banging on the walls
- 24:39Speaker 2: when she made her grand entrance. Be not, Kim had
- 24:42Speaker 2: allies waiting for her on the other side of those
- 24:44Speaker 2: cement walls. She had just as many loyal fans gathered
- 24:47Speaker 2: on the outside. She just hoped they'd still be there
- 24:50Speaker 2: when she finally walked back out. Little Kim did not
- 25:11Speaker 2: have to wait very long to find out if her
- 25:13Speaker 2: fans would stick by her side. Her kingdom awaited the
- 25:16Speaker 2: moment she finished her prison sentence. The crowd outside the
- 25:20Speaker 2: detention center packed itself so tightly she could barely squeeze
- 25:23Speaker 2: herself out the door. Fans closed in from every angle, pushing, prodding, shrieking.
- 25:29Speaker 2: They thrust gifts in her path, wave signs in her face.
- 25:33Speaker 2: For months, Kim's fans sustained themselves with The Naked Truth,
- 25:36Speaker 2: would dropped barely a week into her prison time. That's right,
- 25:40Speaker 2: she dropped her fourth album from behind bars like she
- 25:43Speaker 2: didn't give a fuck if she saw how well it did.
- 25:47Speaker 2: It's still the only album from a female rapper to
- 25:49Speaker 2: be awarded a five MIC rating from the source real
- 25:52Speaker 2: gangster shit, But Little Kim was no gangster when she
- 25:56Speaker 2: was doing time. The Feds came out of prison early
- 25:59Speaker 2: on good behavior. She quickly made peace that she wasn't
- 26:01Speaker 2: going to her prison camp as promised, and she cultivated
- 26:04Speaker 2: a new routine to help her.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Pass the time.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Church on Sundays, Bible study on Tuesdays, karaoke on Christmas.
- 26:12Speaker 2: She made damn sure no one had a reason to
- 26:13Speaker 2: keep her locked up for a moment longer than necessary.
- 26:16Speaker 2: She was a threat to the rap game, not to inmates.
- 26:20Speaker 2: The Feds sprang her two months earlier, right before the
- 26:23Speaker 2: fourth of July two thousand and six. She would have
- 26:25Speaker 2: to endure a month under house arrest in three years
- 26:27Speaker 2: under supervision to fully complete her sentence, and that was
- 26:31Speaker 2: just fine by her. Kim was barely out the door,
- 26:34Speaker 2: and life already felt more normal. She was back in demand,
- 26:37Speaker 2: back to her chariot, a silver Rolls Royce, revved up
- 26:40Speaker 2: and ready to go back to the front page of
- 26:43Speaker 2: every celebrity magazine. Images of a little Kim leaving prison,
- 26:46Speaker 2: clutching a balloon in a bouquet of white roses made
- 26:49Speaker 2: the rounds in major music publications. She slipped into the
- 26:52Speaker 2: backseat of the Rolls and the rush of fame flushed
- 26:54Speaker 2: her cheeks. For the first time in ten months. She
- 26:57Speaker 2: had work to do an MTV video, music its appearance,
- 27:00Speaker 2: to prepare for it, lavish parties to throw, relationships to reevaluate.
- 27:05Speaker 2: She glanced down at the bouquet in her lap and
- 27:07Speaker 2: the balloom bumping against the roof of the back seat.
- 27:10Speaker 2: Kim wasn't sure which parts of her circle were loyal anymore,
- 27:13Speaker 2: but she knew her fans were loyal to the death.
- 27:19Speaker 2: The freight elevator felt like an oven. The air conditioning
- 27:22Speaker 2: repairman Dabs swept from his forehead as it climb to
- 27:25Speaker 2: the roof of the Spotlight Live. It was an easy
- 27:28Speaker 2: gig if you could endure August afternoons slinging nuts and
- 27:31Speaker 2: bolts the top Manhattan skyscrapers. He just needed to get
- 27:35Speaker 2: into the utility shed on the roof and get out
- 27:36Speaker 2: as fast as possible. He needed a strong stomach, too.
- 27:41Speaker 2: He wretched when he opened the door to the shed.
- 27:43Speaker 2: The corpse inside was battered, caked with dried blood. Gorris
- 27:47Speaker 2: spilled from the head. Someone tried to bash this person's
- 27:50Speaker 2: brains in, maybe with a pipe, maybe with a champagne bottle.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Angered Rivera never found her flowers. Three nights earlier, on
- 28:01Speaker 2: August third, two thousand and eight, the barkeep she met
- 28:03Speaker 2: outside the club had no intention of guiding Ingrid to
- 28:06Speaker 2: her idol. It was a lie to get her alone.
- 28:09Speaker 2: He killed her while five hundred guests kept bottle service
- 28:12Speaker 2: busy downstairs, and then he shoved the evidence into the
- 28:15Speaker 2: utility shed on the roof of the building. No one
- 28:17Speaker 2: knew about Ingrid's murder, not the nightclub staff, not the partygoers,
- 28:21Speaker 2: not even the party's host. Little Kim Kim was heartbroken,
- 28:26Speaker 2: but she could probably relate at least a little bit.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Little Kim was a stone cold stunner who claimed she'd
- 28:32Speaker 2: kill a man for her man by any means. Her
- 28:34Speaker 2: loyalty was ironclad, but she couldn't say the same about
- 28:38Speaker 2: everyone around her. Kim trusted Biggie back in the day
- 28:41Speaker 2: when he wasn't pointing a gun at her. She trusted
- 28:44Speaker 2: her father until she became his punching bag just like
- 28:46Speaker 2: her mother. She trusted her crew so much that she
- 28:49Speaker 2: stuck her neck out for them in court, and then
- 28:51Speaker 2: they slid it when they testified against her and sent
- 28:53Speaker 2: her to jail. Little Kim's fans were the only ones
- 28:57Speaker 2: who deserved her loyalty in protection, but even they trusted
- 29:00Speaker 2: the wrong people on occasion. Sometimes it ends in death,
- 29:06Speaker 2: but they all land in disgrace. I'm Jake Brennan in
